Crunchyroll’s awful anti consumer practices are made even worse when you realize that they have a stranglehold on anime distribution in the west.
Sure, Sentai Frameworks is still around, but their catalogue of shows pales in comparison to Chruchyroll’s.
It’s kinda insane how many shows CR licenses each season, seriously half of the shows I watched last year were licensed by CR.
As one would expect, because CR ends up licensing out a bunch of shows each season, they start to get lazy when it comes to the localization.
They have just straight up given up when it came to translating signs and episode titles in certain shows.
And because they’re notoriously anti union, all their English dubs feature the same actors from the Dallas area. Which becomes a huge problem with they end up licensing a show that was previously dubbed by a union studio.
Looking at you Mob Psycho 100 Season 3.
Pretty wild how a shitty company like CR managed to conquer the anime market in the west.
Even during the height of their popularity, Funimation didn’t license as many shows as CR. Though to be fair, anime was still pretty niche in the 2000’s and early 2010’s.
But still, the fact that CR doesn’t have that many competitors in the anime market is pretty concerning. As they will continue to double down on their shitty business practices.

I really struggle with typing subtitles for my youtube videos as a result of my disabilities, but that isnt an excuse to be inaccessible. I still type subtitles for them, it just takes a bit longer for them to be published, but I go as quick as I can. Typing long things like video transcripts make my hands begin to cramp really badly, and also I just have executive dysfunction. Both of these things make it difficult, but I STILL DO IT.
The reason I'm making this post is to say that if I, as a disabled teenager, can still try my absolute hardest to meet peoples accessibility needs despite it being difficult for me, you as a multimillion dollar corporation most definitely can. You dont want to spend money for us, we are an afterthought. And it's just, honestly, unacceptable.
We need a more accessible world. And no, I'm not talking about JUST RAMPS. Just ramps do not make something fully accessible.
Yeah, ramps do make something more accessible and we absolutely need them, but in order for something to be absolutely fully accessible it needs:
Ramps
Elevators
Braille
Closed captioning
Sign interpreters
Frequently placed electronic charging stations
Wide pathways/doorways
Quiet rooms (preferably sensory rooms)
WiFi
First aid
Staff who are trained in disability PROPERLY
Available wheelchairs
Available ear defenders
Warnings for things that contain strobe lights, loud noises, etc.
And SO MUCH MORE. I get that that's a lot, but you are a massive corporation. You can afford to be accessible, and we deserve to be able to acsess the world. We should not be an afterthought.

Saw an anti post post a death threat in the proship search a few days ago. Ya know, the usual "they don't realize that using proship in a sentence within tags without other tags to properly label the post makes them appear in proship spaces."
Except it was very graphically violent. Compared to the usual at least. So I figured "I usually just block, but this might be explicit enough to report."
Now, I'm not stupid. Big corporations are never our friend. So I highly expected nothing to happen. But, I got an email back saying they slapped a community label on the post. Which... is more than I thought would happen. Lmao.

Week 5 blog post "Saga of Big Data 🙃"
After watching "The Legal Side of Big Data", Maciej Ceglowski's talk and reading "The Internet's Original Sin" .  I was intrigued by the complexities surrounding the use of big data in today's business landscape. As a business owner myself, I realize that harnessing the power of big data can unlock numerous opportunities for growth and innovation. However, there are crucial aspects that businesses must be acutely aware of when using big data.
First and foremost, data privacy and security must be at the forefront of any big data strategy. As businesses collect and analyze vast amounts of consumer data, they must ensure strict adherence to applicable laws and regulations. Compliance with data protection laws such as GDPR, CCPA, or other relevant regional laws is not just an ethical responsibility but also vital for avoiding potential legal repercussions and preserving consumer trust.
Transparency is another critical aspect that businesses must prioritize. Consumers have the right to know how their data is being used, stored, and shared. Clear and concise privacy policies and terms of use should be provided, ensuring that consumers can make informed decisions about their data's usage.
Furthermore, businesses should guard against using big data to engage in discriminatory practices. The insights derived from big data must be utilized responsibly and without any bias that could harm certain demographic groups or individuals. It's essential to continuously monitor data usage and algorithmic decisions to avoid reinforcing harmful stereotypes.
Tumblr media
On the consumers' side, awareness of the implications of sharing their data is paramount. They should be mindful of what data they provide to businesses and exercise caution when consenting to data usage. Staying informed about privacy settings and exercising their rights to access, rectify, or delete personal data empowers consumers to have control over their information.
As for balancing the opportunities and threats of big data, a multi-faceted approach is necessary. Collaboration between businesses, policymakers, and consumer advocacy groups is key to developing comprehensive regulations that foster innovation while safeguarding privacy. Encouraging ethical data practices and responsible use of big data should be incentivized, and non-compliance should be met with appropriate consequences.
Additionally, promoting data literacy among the general public can foster a better understanding of the potential benefits and risks associated with big data. By educating consumers about data collection practices, they can make more informed decisions about sharing their information and demand greater accountability from businesses.
In conclusion, the world of big data offers immense potential for businesses, but it also poses significant challenges in terms of privacy, security, and ethics. By being aware of these considerations, businesses can navigate the legal complexities and build trust with their customers. Simultaneously, consumers must stay vigilant about their data and support initiatives that strike a balance between seizing the opportunities and mitigating the threats of big data. Only through collective efforts and responsible practices can we harness the full potential of big data while safeguarding individual rights and societal welfare.
