As the number of people across Ontario without a family doctor reaches a record high, Premier Doug Ford's government is facing a fresh push to make family practice more attractive to physicians by improving compensation.
The contract that covers how doctors are paid in this province, known as the physician services agreement, expires at the end of March. The government is in negotiations with the Ontario Medical Association (OMA), the doctors' bargaining agent, on a new deal.
Family doctors' pay in particular is in the spotlight in those talks, in a way that it hasn't been for a long time.
That's in part because there's a growing chorus of physicians arguing that compensation is one of the key root causes why at least 2.2 million Ontarians don't have a family doctor, a number forecast to nearly double in just a few years. [...]

Non-paywalled version here.
"Tens of thousands of workers at Kaiser Permanente hospitals and clinics across the country will soon vote on whether to authorize a strike, union officials announced Thursday.
The Coalition of Kaiser Permanente Unions, which includes a dozen local unions with members in seven states and the District of Columbia, said voting would begin Saturday [August 26] and extend into the middle of September. Any strike would start no earlier than Oct. 1.
More than 80,000 employees are represented by the coalition, which counts among its members a wide range of hospital and clinic workers including nursing assistants, phlebotomists, pharmacy technicians and housekeepers. The coalition said that it represents roughly 40% of the overall Kaiser Permanente workforce.
Union leaders said that if a strike moves forward, it would be the largest strike of healthcare workers in the history of the country. They faulted Kaiser for inadequate and unsafe staffing and said the healthcare giant had failed to bargain with them in good faith by refusing to provide them with crucial information during negotiations, among other unfair labor practices.
“Patient care is in crisis at Kaiser Permanente,” said Linda Bridges, president of one of the unions in the coalition, OPEIU Local 2in Silver Spring, Md. “Staffing was decimated during the pandemic and it has not gotten any better. The problem we’re dealing with is Kaiser is not hearing us.
“Kaiser can and must do better. ... They need to stop the unfair labor practices and address the healthcare staffing needs now.”
Regan, the SEIU-UHW president, said the coalition has proposed a $25 hourly minimum wage for its members across the Kaiser Permanente system, saying that “you cannot take care of a family in Los Angeles, San Diego, Denver, Washington, D.C., Seattle, Honolulu” on $19 to $21 an hour. He said Kaiser had recently proposed a much lower minimum — $21 an hour — in 2026."

Note: Also, if you have Kaiser and you've been putting off any doctors appointments, uh...you might want to make those asap.

Yet another group of crucial workers is just days away from a nationwide walkout. More than 75,000 workers at one of the nation's largest health care providers, Kaiser Permanente, could go on strike next Wednesday if there's no agreement between their unions and their employer. A final round of in-person negotiations is scheduled to start on Friday, before the current contract expires on Saturday. The three-day strike would hit hospitals, clinics and medical offices from California and Colorado to Washington D.C. Tens of thousands of workers — including nurses, lab technicians, pharmacists and therapists — would walk off the job.

Let us be clear: The atrocities committed by the Israeli military in al-Shifa hospital are the direct result of the US government’s continued support. Today, the Israeli military ended its two-week siege on Gaza City’s al-Shifa Medical Complex, the largest hospital in all of Palestine, leaving it in ruins. The military left destruction in its wake, murdering over 400 people, executing civilians, kidnapping and torturing hundreds of medical workers and patients, and destroying what remains of the hospital.
Many of the Palestinians killed by the Israeli military were tied up and run over by Israeli bulldozers, unable to defend themselves. Israeli soldiers also executed Palestinian prisoners while they were handcuffed, some while their families were forced to watch. Hundreds of Palestinian bodies were left discarded around the complex, unburied.
The Israeli military carries out these atrocities against Palestinians because it is protected by the US government. With full backing from the US, the Israeli government is brutally and forcibly imposing the goal of Zionism: creating a Jewish ethnostate on the premise of “maximum land with minimum Palestinians,” which requires the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians from their land.
These atrocities are not limited to al-Shifa. Last night, the Israeli military attacked al-Aqsa hospital, killing at least four people. The Israeli military is able to destroy the majority of all healthcare in Gaza due to the impunity the US grants it. While the Israeli military was attacking al-Shifa, the Biden administration approved more weapons to Israel.
Mass organized violence has been the Israeli state’s tactic since 1948, when over 750,000 Palestinians were ethnically cleansed during the Nakba, using the very same tactics we saw at al-Shifa Hospital.
We unite against state-sponsored killing and ethnic cleansing. We demand an end to the US’ continual funding of atrocities. As the genocide against Palestinians escalates, it’s critical that we stand firmly in our anti-Zionism and oppose the ongoing Nakba perpetuated by the Israeli state.
We choose the struggle for justice over silence and complicity. Take action at the link in our bio. (@jewishvoiceforpeace on Instagram or at https://www.jewishvoiceforpeace.org/resource/tell-congress-end-us-military-funding-to-israel

The federal government announced Wednesday it will use Canada's immigration system to recruit more in-demand health-care workers as the country grapples with a severe shortage of some professionals in the field, such as family doctors.
Speaking at an event in Bedford, N.S., Immigration Minister Sean Fraser and Health Minister Jean-Yves Duclos unveiled a new dedicated "express entry" stream for health professionals in the economic immigration program.
They said a notice will soon go out to 500 foreign health workers inviting them to apply for permanent residency in Canada.
