On this Day in random cartoon history, there’s a lot to talk about. Starting in 2000, Mr Simmons briefly takes over the prinicpal duties at PS:118, and Timmy’s introduced to South Park. (He thankfully didn’t cause much offense, because he’s a well-rounded character.) Then in 2002, there are pyramids on Mars, and Jack recalls what life was like before Aku’s takeover. In more recent history, the Total Drama gamg were thrown into a prison movie in 2009, the Yugopatamian Queen uses Poof to indimiate in 2010, Phineas, Ferb and pals’ bodies are taken over by timeshare aliens in 2013, and Rainbow Dash goes back to school in 2014. My favourite of the day would be the MLP episode, with Zim taking silver and South Park taking bronze.

Quinn Hughes and the Love of His Life

The Vancouver Canucks locker room was always a hub of activity. Players joked, teased, and bonded as they prepared for practice. Among them was Quinn Hughes, the team's star defenseman. But today, as usual, Quinn's attention wasn't entirely on the game. His thoughts often wandered to his girlfriend, Y/N, who had captured his heart in a way nothing else ever had.

Quinn's teammates noticed this shift in his demeanor. Brock Boeser, his best friend and constant tormentor, was the first to call him out. "Hey, Hughesy, you daydreaming about Y/N again?" Brock teased, a wide grin spreading across his face.

Quinn blushed, shaking his head but unable to hide his smile. "Shut up, Boes," he mumbled, his ears turning red.

Elias Pettersson joined in, leaning against his locker. "Yeah, Quinn, you're turning into a real softie. We used to think you were tough."

The locker room erupted in laughter, and Quinn couldn't help but chuckle too. His teammates' teasing was all in good fun, and he knew they were happy for him. Y/N had brought a new light into his life, and everyone could see it.

Quinn's thoughts drifted back to the first time he met Y/N. It was at a charity event for the Canucks, and she was there as a volunteer. Her smile caught his attention from across the room, and he spent the entire evening trying to muster the courage to talk to her. When he finally did, they hit it off immediately. Her warmth, intelligence, and kindness were magnetic, and he was hooked.

Since then, they'd been inseparable. Y/N often attended games, cheering him on from the stands. She quickly became a favorite among his teammates, not just because of how she supported Quinn, but because of her genuine nature and the way she fit seamlessly into their hockey family.

One day, after a grueling practice, Quinn decided to bring Y/N to the rink. He wanted her to see him in his element and meet the team officially. As they walked in hand in hand, the teasing began almost immediately.

"Look, it's Hughesy's better half!" Brock called out, prompting a round of applause and whistles from the team.

Y/N laughed, not minding the attention. She squeezed Quinn's hand reassuringly and whispered, "They seem like a great group."

"They are," Quinn replied, his heart swelling with pride. "And they love to give me a hard time."

Y/N grinned, loving how Quinn's teammates interacted with him. It was clear they were a close-knit group, more like family than just teammates. She watched as they ribbed Quinn about his newfound softness, and she found it endearing. To her, it showed just how much Quinn cared and how deeply he could love.

One evening, after a particularly tough loss, Quinn was feeling down. Y/N knew exactly how to lift his spirits. She prepared his favorite meal, set up a movie marathon of his favorite comedies, and just held him. She knew he needed the comfort and the distraction.

"Thank you, Y/N," Quinn said softly, his head resting on her lap. "I don't know what I'd do without you."

She stroked his hair, her touch soothing. "I'm always here for you, Quinn. Through the wins and the losses."

Their relationship wasn't without its challenges. Being a professional athlete meant Quinn was often away for games and road trips. It wasn't easy, but they made it work. They cherished every moment they had together, and their love grew stronger with each passing day.

One night, after a particularly long road trip, Quinn returned home exhausted. As soon as he walked through the door, Y/N was there, wrapping her arms around him. He melted into her embrace, feeling all the stress and fatigue of the trip slip away.

"Welcome home," she whispered, kissing his cheek.

"It's so good to be home," he replied, holding her close. "I missed you."

"I missed you too," she said, pulling back to look into his eyes. "You look tired. Let's get you to bed."

Quinn didn't argue. He let Y/N lead him to their bedroom, where she had already set out fresh pajamas and his favorite pillow. He couldn't help but smile at how thoughtful she was.

As they settled into bed, Quinn wrapped his arms around Y/N, pulling her close. "You know, the guys give me a hard time about how much I love you."

Y/N giggled. "I think it's cute. It shows how much you care."

"I do care," Quinn said, his voice serious. "I love you more than anything, Y/N. You make everything better."

She kissed him softly, her heart swelling with love. "And I love you, Quinn. Always."

Their relationship continued to flourish, despite the ups and downs of Quinn's demanding career. They faced each challenge together, their bond growing stronger with each passing day. The teasing from his teammates never let up, but Quinn didn't mind. He wore their jabs as a badge of honor, proud of the love he and Y/N shared.

One afternoon, after practice, Quinn was sitting in the locker room when Brock approached him, a smirk on his face. "Hey, Hughesy, we're all heading out for dinner. You in, or are you gonna be all lovesick and head home to Y/N?"

Quinn laughed, shaking his head. "I'm in. But I'm bringing Y/N with me."

Brock rolled his eyes playfully. "Of course you are. Just don't get all mushy on us, okay?"

"No promises," Quinn shot back, grinning.

At the restaurant, Y/N fit right in with the team, laughing at their jokes and sharing stories. The guys loved having her around, and Quinn couldn't have been happier. As the evening went on, he found himself watching her, amazed by how perfectly she had integrated into his life.

"Hey, Hughesy," Brock called out from across the table. "You know we're just giving you a hard time because we're happy for you, right?"

Quinn nodded, his heart full. "I know, Boes. And I appreciate it."

After dinner, as they walked back to their apartment, Quinn pulled Y/N close, kissing the top of her head. "Thanks for being amazing tonight. The guys really like you."

"They're great," Y/N replied, smiling up at him. "And I'm really happy to be a part of your life, Quinn."

"You are my life," he said softly, stopping to look into her eyes. "I love you, Y/N. More than words can say."

Tears filled her eyes, and she kissed him deeply, pouring all her love into that kiss. "I love you too, Quinn. So much."

As they continued their walk home, hand in hand, they knew that whatever challenges came their way, they would face them together. Their love was strong, and with each other's support, they could overcome anything. Quinn was a different man with Y/N in his life—softer, happier, and more complete. And he wouldn't have it any other way.

11 months down, 1 month to go.

Rocko meets some elves in 1994, in an episode that starts exactly like a New Zealand Christmas.

The president’s daughter dates Johnny Bravo in 1997. Perhaps they should’ve waited to air this episode after February 27th 1998.

The South Park gang sing some vulgar Christmas songs in 1999, based on an already released album. To be serious, for as impressive of a satire as South Park is, it’s only natural to have episodes and messages you vehemently disagree with, and I for one don’t think their commentary on the War on Frizzies could’ve aged worse.

Professor Utonium starts stealing toys for the girls in his sleep in 2000. It’s all worth it for this screencap.

Foster’s starts filling up with jolly red imaginary friends in 2005, giving Bloo incentive to spend the episode doing something relatively helpful. It’s a Christmas miracle!

Zuko makes one of the most important decisions of his life in 2006. Spoiler alert, they’ve still got one season after this.

And lastly, Dan gets a job with a boss who’s somehow on his wavelength in 2012. If you’ve seen the episode, you’ll know exactly how.

Pretty great day right here, but I’ll give the gold medal to Avatar.

hello (◠‿◠)👋 over on my panel show blog, i host a googledrive of about 2tb of british comedy content that people have really seemed to enjoy over the years! i have a lot of storage available, so i figured i would do the same over here~

this is a totally random assortment of about 1tb of films as well as mini/series, audiobooks, and stage plays: things i love, things i've never seen but want to, a few requests and fan faves — and i'll be adding more things regularly. i make an effort to get everything in very high quality, typically .mkv files of 1080p/2160p bluray rips, if i can :')

plenty of it is nothing particularly rare or special, but i personally think there are some real hidden gems in there, so i hope people will enjoy them!

— i'm streaming a film but it's in another language/commentary is on. how can i change that? i've downloaded some of these from foreign hubs, so the default audio tracks are not always the originals. googledrive doesn't support multiple audio tracks, so you'll need to download the film and switch the audio track like so:

— what is VIDEO_TS and how do i watch it? a video_ts folder is a full-blown dvd! after downloading the VIDEO_TS folder, you simply drop the entire folder into your media player and it will function like a dvd with a home screen you can click on:

I've got to say, I've been doing a lot of research on Italy recently and I literally can't stop thinking about your boys. I'm over here trying to read about whatever Crusade and my brain is just a constant loop of "isn't Machete a cardinal? And Vasco was from like Verona, right?" Not super conducive to learning anything, but I am enjoying myself and thought you should know.

I'd argue that getting invested in your characters and their stories and having to do background research for them is actually a great way to accumulate knowledge about various subjects. Often it's stuff you probably would never get around to reading about otherwise. I'm not saying it's always information you'll have many practical uses for, but learning about new things is fun and it's beneficial to you and your brain in the long run.

Vasco is from Florence actually! It's usually considered to be the birthplace and the main hub of the entire Renaissance movement. Leonardo da Vinci, Botticelli and Michelangelo lived and influenced there and Dante Alighieri (author of The Divine Comedy/Dante's Inferno) was florentine as well, albeit he lived several centuries prior to them.

Suki yanen kedo dou yaro ka: a tiny meta on being a Tokyo buzzkill

Apparently this show is now internationally known as Although I love You and You. What a weird translation, I refuse to acknowledge it lol. Kedo doesn't mean although, it's just a way to combine two sentences and soften the message. Suki yanen kedo - I like you. Dou yaro ka - how about it, what do you say, etc.

But enough about that! I wanted to write a small post for those not very familiar with regional differences in Japan because that seems to be at the forefront of this story.

Sakae is from Oosaka, Soga from Tokyo. The two cities/prefectures are rivals. Think the two coasts of the United States. Once a small village, Tokyo (then Edo) became the center of Japanese politics in 1603 when the samurai government moved their capital from Kamakura. Located next to the old imperial capital of Kyoto, the history of Oosaka spans much longer. Even as Edo became the capital, Oosaka continued to flourish as a hub of commerce. Rice and other produce where shipped from Oosaka, establishing it as the food capital of Japan.

People from Oosaka are very proud of their roots. There are many regional dialects in Japan, but you won't hear most in the media because people tend to switch to standard Tokyo language when not with their peers. Oosaka dialect is different. You'll hear it on tv pretty much every day in variety and gaming shows. Oosaka people are less likely to switch to Tokyo speech when speaking to people from other areas.

Because of tv, Oosaka dialect has become the language of comedy. A lot of popular comedians hail from Oosaka, and the dialect is part of their shtick. Random characters in anime, movies and so on will be speaking in Oosaka dialect for character purposes. The steotype of a person speaking in Oosaka dialect is fun, laid-back and cheerful, as opposed to people from Tokyo who are thought to be busy and uptight (with the exception of the edokko of downtown Tokyo). Remember the raamen chef from Our dining table? He spoke in Oosaka dialect.

The differences in stereotypical Oosaka and Tokyo characteristics come down to nori. This is Soga's problem in the story and the source of his culture shock. Soga is nori ga warui, his nori is bad. He's not spontaneous, he can't crack a joke. He's a buzzkill, basically.

Nori is the ability to play along. There was a tv show many years ago where strangers in Tokyo and Oosaka were thrown a ball at a train station (or something similar, my memory is very blurry). People in Oosaka were more likely to interact with the ball and play along, whereas people in Tokyo would rather ignore it.

Oosaka loves a good nori. Whether Soga can find his remains to be seen!

(Belated) Binderary Book 2024

My first year participating in Binderary and I'm 2/2 with my goals, albeit slightly late (even with the added leap day).

Goal No. 1: Bind a book!

This fic is an orphaned work, with no author available for me to reach out to. Convenient, since it was a last-minute decision.

Goal No. 2: Finish typesetting the fic that got me into this whole bookbinding/fanbinding hobby!

Bad Boys JEDI Style is a 217 chapter, 908k word "comedy of errors: in which our heroes are recruited to film a reality holo-drama". Much to my despair, the fic I loved had been deleted from every site it was uploaded to, and I was left kicking myself for not having downloaded a copy from AO3.

Shout out to Kam and Lofe, whose wonderful Binderary demos were put to use in the making of this book! Kam's French Double-Core endbands demo was super helpful, sizing up the 'textblock' and components made it easy to actually see what's happening with the sewing. Loffe's demo introduced me to the split-board binding technique and, sleep-deprived hiccup notwithstanding, I think I might find it easier then bradel style binding! Need to bind more books to know for sure (such a hardship 😔).

In other new-s, I took my dad's recent workshop baby for a spin. The bookbinding plough works like a dream! I tried a hidden fore-edge painting for the first time (just a solid colour), but the purple is lost under the Payne's Gray basecoat I applied to the silver painted edges. Adding ribbon to the cover was also new (mostly due to the fact that I never remember until the endpapers are already pasted down).

On the Design

Cover

This is a Team Thunderclap!Ye Xiu AU, so the cover was based on Team Thunderclap's uniforms from the donghua (from the one screencap of the team I found, see below): purple across the shoulders and forearms of their jackets with a yellow stripe down the centre. I added silver ribbon as a nod to the white of the jackets as well as the grey gear of the team's logo. Also in reference to the title: yellow=sunlight, silver=moonlight.

Title Page

The title page stumped me for a while. While brainstorming title page design ideas, I thought about what the title means. In English it's poetic but nonsensical, so I wondered if maybe it held some meaning in Chinese?

As it turns out, it does. Kind of. Maybe. (If I stretch and reach for it, it makes sense). According to a quick search of one webpage for each query, "'White Moonlight' usually refers to a person or thing that is elusive in the heart, has always been loved, but cannot be touched" or "an 'unforgettable first love'." The sunbeam itself might be Ye Xiu, the figurative ray of light, the hero, the gaming idol. Or 'catching a sunbeam' could refer to how "sunflowers turn their heads to catch every sunbeam."

The potential meaning I have cobbled together is how Dai Yanqi turns Ye Xiu's head and captures his heart by sharing the (SanXiu-ified) story of Su Muqiu, the aforementioned white moonlight. Is this what the author intended? Who knows. But it does seem plausible enough to inspire me.

I ended up using both the idea of sunflowers and Thunderclap's uniforms (again). Lightning referencing the team's logo, and also the white colour of a flash of lightning which is kind of like moonlight. The logo's background is blue, as is the uniform as seen on the cover of the manhua featuring the captain Xiao Shiqin (see below), so I made the background blue-purple.

Endpapers

The (not-actually-)sunflowers carried over to the endpapers, as well as the grey colour from the gear in Thunderclap's logo.

Endbands

Kept these simple. A solid purple, as close as I could get to the bookcloth. I didn't want to draw attention away from the stripes on the covers or the silver edges.

Probably could've gone for thicker cores.

The text

For the scene breaks I used a special character of a gear. The cog also looks like a sun. Which is fun because it can reference Thunderclap, the title (sunbeam), and my design choice of sunflowers.

I reused the lightning image at 50% opacity as a background to set apart the backmatter.

Misc.

Recently, I've begun to increase my efforts of preseving fanfiction and safeguarding the stories I love from purges and takedowns. (Sparked by the December 2023 scandal about Sony announcing an upcoming removal of content including the movies and TV shows that people have purchased).
