KJ Charles is screamingly funny about the upper classes but I think the absolute funniest scene I've read so far is in this Will Darling book (set in the 1920s).
[SPOILERS for Will Darling: The Sugared Game.]
.
.
.
A gaggle of Woosterish trust fund babies accidentally burst into the climactic scene to gape in bewilderment at the bad guy who's cornered, desperate and brandishing a gun.

I like how Bandit Keith and Pegasus represent 2 extremes of American stereotypes in the series
Pegasus being the obnoxious wealthy elitist who believes no one can touch him while Keith is likely from a lower/working class background obsessed with money and guns
Keith is very much an asshole, but Pegasus is a bigger asshole due to his access to obscene levels of wealth and has little-to-no limitations on how far he wants to exploit people when it suits him, all the while appearing to be a clean and upstanding figure to the public. Once again, this is due to how he can use his abundant pool of resources to manipulate people and their perception of him, while Keith basically has to scrape up whatever he can get his hands on to get closer to his goals, manners and decorum be damned
The scene in the anime where Pegasus flushes Keith down a trap hole is an accurate representation of just what people from Pegasus' background think of people from Keith's background--waste that can be disposed of at a whim once they're no longer useful or entertaining
Meanwhile, you have Rebecca, who serves as a sort of middle ground and the third American stereotype: A loud, aggressive personality who talks over everyone and doesn't listen to alternate interpretations because she believes she is justified in taking what "rightfully belongs" to her (which, oddly enough, was motivated by an off-hand comment where Rebecca told Yuugi and co that she met Bandit Keith at a tournament in the States and the latter told her that Arthur's Blue-Eyes was "stolen" by Sugoroku)
TLDR
Pegasus - elitist imperialist "champagne socialist" jerk
Bandit Keith - working class "rise and grind" jerk
Rebecca - working class imperialist "this is mine by birthright" jerk
And I guess Arthur would be bisexual card game Bernie Sanders or something idk

I have Shower Thoughts which may be incomprehensible
I feel like we have seen plenty of pieces of media which, in some way, subvert the class hierarchy. Triangle of Sadness is the one which springs to mind, but there are loads of other examples. The thing is, they usually come from the minds of wealthy people and therefore explore how class subversion affects the formerly powerful. Which is fine, and Triangle of Sadness is excellent (&gross).
What I would find more interesting, though, is the same concept but from the perspective of a working class person where the film explores their changes. Would they become power-hungry and exploitative? Would they be compassionate because they know what it's like to have nothing? Would there be differences along racial/gender lines? How would someone who, for example, attended a private school on a scholarship fare? Presumably, this would vary between characters, & I'd like to know how their dynamic works out.

Judith had a sneaking suspicion that he sabotaged all his business opportunities on purpose because he didn't want to be in business. He was more allergic to work than anyone she'd ever met, including some of the toffs she had grown up with. Gavin's idea of the good life was spending every waking moment taking his pleasure. And for him, business was the antithesis of pleasure, so he avoided it like the plague.

Gortash designs and builds mechanisms so I imagine he has to be able to sketch fairly decently in order to sketch his projects and designs. And I'm imagining a pile of charcoal sketches of Durge, done over their entire acquaintance, starting out with sketches of them in battle and then slowly becoming more detailed and intimate and as they do, the titles changing from things like "The Bhaalspawn" and "Bhaal's Chosen at Their Bloody Work" to "The Chosen in Contemplation" and finally just Durge's name

pyramid game is such a perfect little drama for the sapphics because you've got a whole demented psychological thriller going on about high school girls creating a whole fake social class system that results because one bored little princess bitch thought it'd be funny, and you've got all these dynamics that can only be boiled down to some kind of love story because like. ye lim and eun jeong's dynamic? the princess idol and her athlete bodyguard. soo ji and ja eun's dynamic? the cold mastermind and the compassionate heart. even whatever da yeon and seol ha have got going on? typical hitter and loyal dog dynamic. the list can go on.

this gotta be one of the most cultural tone-deaf things i’ve ever read - specially coming from a gringa who who has lived in brazil for a decade
Tumblr media
first of, the “sending the kids home earlier” isn’t about the staff watching the matches, it’s about everyone. world cup culture in brazil is huge - yes, even after 2014. it’s about meeting your friends and family, going to bars, someone else’s house or any public space and watching the match together. it’s, as it’s in most latinoamerican countries, about the community. sending kids home to watch the game isn’t about the school staff taking half a day off, it’s about the staff being able to feel the football atmosphere at home, with their families. it’s about doing the same for kids - going home earlier so they can be with their siblings, parents and grandparents (most of who will else be home earlier) and enjoy the next 2 hours or so together. it’s about bonding and community and it’s quite depressing a journalist can’t see that.
second, this woman is british… anyone from a place that puts everything on hold for a fucking coffin should be forbidden to talk about other countries’ days off.
third: vai embora então 👩‍❤️‍💋‍👩

I think a good substitution to the Klinger 'get-rich-quick' plots, would have been Charles coming up with failed money-making schemes and falling for scams.

I love the way Crash Course in Romance explored class in its 8th episode! It’s subtle enough to go almost unnoticed for now but the fact that Chi Yeol had to chose between the piano recital and the chicken party leaves no doubt that it’s written like that on purpose. Chi Yeol is the star of the academy, he’s super popular, crazy rich, and is expected to date people from a high rank like the pianist he went on a blind date with. It’s not like he enjoys this life, it literally makes him sick, but that’s just what is expected of him. To get closer to Haeng Seon, he has to ditch this lifestyle. I feel like this is what episode 8 was about, telling it mostly through food.
Haeng Seon’s food an obvious part of this. She’s a cook but she sells ordinary side dishes. When she sees Chi Yeol in front of the store, Sua’s mom even says she "expected him to have a more sophisticated palate" because it’s not fancy enough for rich people like them. So when he suggests having a party to the family, he invites them to a western gourmet restaurant. Very far from the party they had at home to celebrate Hae Yi’s perfect grade in math in the previous episode... The family feels awkward, out of place, in this fancy and cold restaurant. When Chi Yeol asks to have every course served at the same time, it feels like home again. They speak again, eat big bites of food and food goes from one plate to another. The table was so big for the four of them before, now it feels like it got smaller and they sit closer to each other.
Fancy food like the one from that restaurant or like the snacks gifted by the pianist are great, they make you feel good. It’s new, different, it’s expensive. You want to get it from time to time. But what fills you up is basic, familial food, like Haeng Seon’s. It’s what makes you healthy, what comforts you when you need it. It’s the food you share with your loved ones or those who need it. It's the recipes you get from your mother. Chi Yeol thought he could only stomach Haeng Seon’s food but he ate without problem chicken she didn’t cook because it’s not just her cooking he needs but people to eat with. A family.
