If you haven’t read the comic “Project Nought” by Chelsey Furedi (@cheriiart) yet, you totally should! I really loved it a lot and I totally recommend it! The story and adventure is a lot of fun, and the characters are absolutely adorable!
I know it only came out recently, but I still wanted to draw some fan art for it! I love Ren and Mars so much lol. (more of me being excited under “keep reading”)
Also, I’m super proud of the author and artist (Chelsey Furedi) because even though I don’t know her IRL, I’ve followed her art for years, starting right here on Tumblr back in the day! She made the webcomic Rock and Riot years ago (also one of my faves), and I’ve followed her work ever since! I remember being so excited when I heard she was publishing her first official comic book!
Her art and writing has improved so much!!! It’s really inspiring to me to see (in real time) an independent tumblr artist improve so much and get into publishing!
and yeah THE STORY ITSELF IS SO GOOD??? HELL YEAH!!! No spoilers from me here, but trust me IT’S GOOD

Project Nought - Chelsey Furedi
Tumblr media
Read: 18/02/2023
Rating: 4/5
Rep: brown gay main character, achillean main character, m/m relationship, East Asian non-binary side character, sapphic side character, Māori disabled side character who uses a wheelchair, brown side character, various other queer and non-white side characters including the villains
CW: medical experimentation, confinement, character death (both on page and in backstory), grief, misgendering (brief, not malicious, quickly corrected)
Review:
Ren, a teenager from the year 1997, wakes up in the year 2122 and is told he’s been pulled forward in time as part of a yearly project at New Zealand university. He’s hesitant to fully engage in life in the future at first, and just as he’s starting to relax into everything he and his new friends discover that not all is as it seems and that the giant corporation that has its fingers in every aspect of life might not be as benevolent as it first appears.
I liked the core four characters! Jia is probably my favourite, closely followed by Phoebe. The two of them together make up a textbook grumpy x sunshine couple, though I found the direction their relationship takes to be super interesting! They’re into each other, and they both know it, but they also both know that Jia’s in no position to be in a relationship right now, so they’re not together, they’re friends, and it’s genuinely fine. This approach is a pretty rare one and I found it really refreshing to read!
Mars, the secondary main character, is a total sweetheart. His enthusiasm for the mere concept of time travel is completely understandable, honestly I’d probably be just as hyped if I were in his position. He’s somewhat naive and initially has complete faith and belief in Chronotech, which does cause some trouble for the group, but he’s not incapable of admitting when he’s wrong and when the truth of the situation becomes clear he’s all in.
All things considered, I think Ren reacted to suddenly waking up over 100 years into his future very well. He has a life back home, and at the exact moment he was taken from he’d just made a discovery and a decision that had the potential to change his life massively, so it’s hardly surprising that he doesn’t quite manage to hit the ground running. He gets the hang of it all, though, and he handled every situation thrown his way over the course of the story about as well as could be expected. He’s a solid main character and I enjoyed reading from his perspective!
I would’ve liked a little more build up to the relationship between Ren and Mars. I liked the way it went after the point that they established that they liked each other, I just would’ve preferred a teensy little bit more build up and tension before their initial kiss. This is purely a personal preference, though, and I’d hardly call this a case of instalove. I just like my burns to be a bit slower than this one was.
The overall message of the story serves as a cautionary tale against allowing one company to monopolise all areas of life. Chronotech effectively controls all tech, has strong links in the police, and is even inherently intertwined with the university that Mars goes to, and with this level of influence in society comes a lack of oversight and an ability to exploit and hurt whoever they want without any fear of repercussions. The comparisons between this and the big corporations of today are unavoidable.
I figured out what was going on way before any of the characters did. Being able to predict where a story is going isn’t something that bothers me, I care way more about whether a story is well constructed than I care about its ability to surprise me, but it’s worth noting in case it might bother you. Something that does actually bother me is when part of a mystery is sustained solely through a character refusing to answer questions without a good in-universe reason for doing so, and that unfortunately did come into play a little here. They got it out of her in the end, but they were already allies so there was little reason for the delay other than to drip feed the reader some more. In the grand scheme of things this is a minor complaint, but it’s a pet peeve of mine and so it’s noticeable to me when it happens.
Overall, this was a fun read! The characters were likeable, there was a good balance of funny to serious moments, and the overall message is one that’s sorely needed in the present. If you’re looking for a quick sci-fi read then I’d highly recommend picking this one up!
Thank you to Clarion Books and HarperCollins for providing me with an arc in return for an honest review

I just finished reading a graphic novel with time travel as a large premise and let me tell you, the scream I scrumpt when the twist was that there was no time travel and it was all a lie!
I have been bamboozled, in the best way possible!
Fuck I love a book that keeps me guessing and surprises me!

LGBTQ+ Characters in Comics from the 21st century I like
A few years back I did a post on LGBTQ+ characters in comics from the 20th Century I have a soft spot for. When it comes to the new millennium, the last two decades have seen an explosion of such comics and characters. So here is my short little follow up for the 21st century.
Tumblr media
  Jade
Starting off the new millennium the French comic series Djinn with Belgian writer Jean Dufaux, illustrated by Spanish artist Ana Miralles would run through three arcs for 15 years. I’ll never forget the first time during a comics exhibition I saw an absolutely captivating illustration of the character at the heart of the series, Jade. A fascinating, queer, and amoral enigmatic figure, Sultan’s favorite in the last years of the Ottoman Empire spoken of as a djinn who also seems the key to an immense treasure.
Tumblr media
  Fumi Manjôme
With little nods to Japanese girls’ literature and culture Sweet Blue Flowers by Japanese artist Takako Shimura is an enduring yuri series around high school girls and maturing. The shy lesbian Fumi and messy feelings are a major focus. Later adolescence can be an emotional time for anyone. Shimura softly explores when and how her characters mourn disappointments and disenchantment along with finding their identity.
Tumblr media
  Kevin Keller
Archie Comics were a staple of my childhood. The quintessential US slice-of-life comic focusing on a group of teenagers goes way back to 1941. However, the 21st century saw a reinvigoration of the Archie brand. Among the successes the gay Kevin Keller created in 2010 by US comic artist Dan Parent debuted in Veronica #202 and has since enjoyed huge popularity. Eventually, I was also drawn back as an adult reader with the gang grown up in the Life with Archie series. In 2012 Life with Archie #16 saw Kevin not only following in the footsteps of his dad as a soldier in the Army but marrying Dr. Clay Walker. Despite protests from bigoted groups the installment of the series would be another sold out hit earning Kevin the designation as “most important new character in Archie history.” Further a character that has also represented fighting the epidemic of gun violence in the US going on in the series to become a State Senator on the issue.
Tumblr media
  Richard III
Japanese artist Aya Kanno inspired by Shakespeare’s tetralogy Henry VI, Richard III and the famous 15th century War of the Roses in her series Requiem of the Rose King goes in a different direction, making her Richard intersex. Only the first of many choices in this girls’ comic which has also garnered attention from other well-respected artists. YMMV but the saga of this Richard has consistently been one of the more compelling examples over the last decade.
Tumblr media
Lisa Williams and Ally Carter
Beginning as fetishistic illustrations and short strips by Croatian artist Stjepan Sejic (under a pseudonym) on DeviantArt, BDSM comic series Sunstone was a notable read for me in 2015. With genuine class and smart use of humour, the characters Lisa and Ally and their growing relationship are wonderfully relatable on many levels.
Tumblr media
  Ace
If you love the movie Grease but crave something 1950’s vintage queer the webcomic Rock and Riot by Chelsey Furedi might fit the bill. The cast is as wide and beautiful as a rainbow. Among the many teenage delinquent characters is the 17-year-old agender, asexual, demiromantic Ace. And founder of their own gang the Bandits and who definitely does things their own way.
Tumblr media
  Ionel
Another of the top titles from the 2010s I first came across the exquisite mystery webcomic Heart of Gold in the (now defunct) digital magazine Sparkler Monthly. The atmospheric ongoing series features Ionel a panromantic asexual pianist with albinism who is losing his sight and a gay priest Father Dunant who is known as a faith healer.
Tumblr media
  Milagro Villa
I’ve seen feathers, wings, and birds stand in for representations about abuse and trauma before. In the short comic Songbird For A Vulture US artist Naomi Franquiz does exactly that. Crafting one of the most poignant examples of an abuse survivor, found family, and healing included in Power & Magic The Queer Witch Comics Anthology.
Tumblr media
Ed Fiedler and Lucardo von Gishaupt
Forgive me the terrible pun but I’m a sucker for vampires, especially the queer variety. Letters for Lucardo by Finnish artist Otava Heikkilä is a delightful erotic comic series with a romance between vampire Lucardo and the older Ed.
Tumblr media
  Ryô Watari
I’ve gone on about self-actualization in fashion before. Series Boys Run the Riot by Japanese artist Keiko Gaku acutely presents a comic about trans teenager Ryô building confidence, friendships, and a street fashion brand.

Hey I decide to make to make some more headcanons about @artzychic27 Ms.Mendelevie’s class + The Austins. I also forgot some angst headcanons that I’m adding here. Also I’m running out of ideas so these ones are probably going to the last ones for a while. Also sorry for the sloppiness for this one. But regardless, I hope you enjoy them and you have a good day or night whenever your reading this! Tw: family death
Sad headcanons:
Cosette still covers their vitiligo by dying their white streaks, so they can feel a bit more normal not only to others but to themself as well.
Marc has repressed anger, especially ones towards Lucien. So Marc takes anger management class to help with that even when someone he loves gets hurt, you better watch out.
Lacey doesn’t remember that much about her parents so the things she hears from them are stories told from her grandparents. Lacey just wants to talk to her parents so she said goodbye to them probably since she never got the chance to.
Headcanons:
Lacey’s bi awakening happens when she was in fencing tryouts and she saw Kagami and she was a flustered mess.
Whenever the class has arguments that can’t be resolved quickly, Simon and Aurore act like lawyers to debate and resolve the argument. And they act as detectives on the case.
Austin T and Cosette both love the Charlie and the chocolate factory movies and the book but are terrified of the musical adaptation.
Austin B probably has a retainer.
Marc is really good at ice skating since his moms took him there when he was really little. So Marc usually tries to teach some of his friends and Nath how to ice skate.
Denise has a solar system hanging up in their room.
Simon has a phone charm that Denise gave him for his birthday.
Mireille has lollipops earrings that were a gift from Sabrina back when they were friends.
Reshma is scared of small rodents like rats and mice.
Ismael is the type of person to corrupt kids when he is left alone with them. So he is not the most responsible babysitter but he is a fun one.
Aurore has a little sister, who she is really close with and an older brother who is considered a failure to their parents eyes but is a loving brother to her.
Mireille repairs her friendship with Sabrina. It is not perfect and not as good as before but they are making progress again.
When Cosette finds out how Marc got Akumatized to Reverser, they went to confront nath and give him a piece of their mind but end up giving him advice on how to apologize to Marc properly.
Jean’s first performance was when he was 8 and played a minor role in Cinderella.
Austin A judges the other Austins’ fashion sense, so he is basically the judge of fashion to them, even if the others get annoyed by him.
Austin Q has an older brother named Félice and he is jealous of him. They don't have the best relationship but Félice tries to make quality time with his brother like Olga does with Helga from “Hey Arnold!”.
Zoé was always fine with superheroes since she lives in New York and sort of knew about Paris and their situation.
Zoé learns how to skateboard from Ismael and goes to skateboard park with him and alix.
Marc is a big fan of punk and rock music since one of his moms has tons of albums based on them.
Zoé’s and Marc's favorite graphic novel is Rock and Riot by Chelsey Furedi and even cosplay as some of the characters.
Jean’s favorite book genre is romance fantasy.
Aurore loves playing the piano and plays it for her friends especially for Mireille.

Ace recommendations
Welcome to ace recommendations, where I will recommend pieces of media that i have read/watched that either is about being asexual, has an asexual character in it, or is created by someone who is asexual.
Today's recommendation is "Rock and Riot" a webcomic by Chelsey Furedi.
Rock and Riot is a comedy takes place in the 1950s, and follows 2 rival gangs consisting of high school students. The webcomic is a quick read. The people in the gangs begin to realize that maybe they have more in common with each other than they thought and work to defy societal expectations.
There are a lot acespec characters in the webcomic.
Carla (she/her) who's kind and confident, Edd (he/him) who's chill, and Dett (she/they/he) who's cunning and flirtatious are all asexual.
Rolly (she/her) who's trustworthy, Ace (They/them) who's mysterious, Skip (she/he) who's a protective book-worm, and Sasha (he/him) who's active and reserved are all demisexual.
And Gene (he/him) who's shy and smart is greysexual.
Rock and Riot can be read for free here on Tumblr or on Tapas.
