Book recs: black science fiction

As february and black history month nears its end, if you're a reader let's not forget to read and appreciate books by black authors the rest of the year as well! If you're a sci-fi fan like me, perhaps this list can help find some good books to sink your teeth into.

Bleak dystopias, high tech space adventures, alien monsters, alternate dimensions, mash-ups of sci-fi and fantasy - this list features a little bit of everything for genre fiction fans!

Lagoon by Nnedi Okorafor

Something massive and alien crashes into the ocean off the coast of Nigeria. Three people, a marine biologist, a rapper, and a soldier, find themselves at the center of this presence, attempting to shepherd an alien ambassador as chaos spreads in the city. A strange novel that mixes the supernatural with the alien, shifts between many different POVs, and gives a one of a kind look at a possible first contact.

Nubia: The Awakening (Nubia series) by Omar Epps & Clarence A. Hayes

Young adult. Three teens living in the slums of an enviromentally ravaged New York find that something powerful is awakening within them. They’re all children of refugees of Nubia, a utopian African island nation that sank as the climate worsened, and realize now that their parents have been hiding aspects of their heritage from them. But as they come into their own, someone seeks to use their abilities to his own ends, against their own people.

The Scourge Between Stars by Ness Brown

Novella. After having failed at establishing a new colony, starship Calypso fights to make it back to Earth. Acting captain Jacklyn Albright is already struggling against the threats of interstellar space and impending starvation when the ship throws her a new danger: something is hiding on the ship, picking off her crew one by one in bloody, gruesome ways. A quick, excellent read if you want some good Alien vibes.

Dawn (Xenogenesis trilogy) by Octavia E. Butler*

After a devestating war leaves humanity on the brink of extinction, survivor Lilith finds herself waking up naked and alone in a strange room. She’s been rescued by the Oankali, who have arrived just in time to save the human race. But there’s a price to survival, and it might be humanity itself. Absolutely fucked up I love it I once had to drop the book mid read to stare at the ceiling and exclaim in horror at what was going on. Includes darker examinations of agency and consent, so enter with caution.

Midnight Robber by Nalo Hopkinson*

Utterly unique in world-building, story, and prose, Midnight Robber follows young Tan-Tan and her father, inhabitants of the Carribean-colonized planet of Toussaint. When her father commits a terrible crime, he’s exiled to a parallel version of the same planet, home to strange aliens and other human exiles. Tan-Tan, not wanting to lose her father, follows with him. Trapped on this new planet, he becomes her worst nightmare. Enter this book with caution, as it contains graphic child sexual abuse.

Rosewater (The Wormwood trilogy) by Tade Thompson

In Nigeria lies Rosewater, a city bordering on a strange, alien biodome. Its motives are unknown, but it’s having an undeniable effect on the surrounding life. Kaaro, former criminal and current psychic agent for the government, is one of the people changed by it. When other psychics like him begin getting killed, Kaaro must take it upon himself to find out the truth about the biodome and its intentions.

Do You Dream of Terra-Two? by Temi Oh

Young adult. A century ago, an astronomer discovered a possibly Earth-like planet. Now, a team of veteran astronauts and carefully chosen teenagers are preparing to embark on a twenty-three year trip to get there. But space is dangerous, and the team has no one to rely on but each other if - or when - something goes wrong. An introspective slowburn of a story, this focuses more on character work than action.

The Best of All Possible Worlds by Karen Lord

After the planet Sadira is left uninhabitable, its few survivors are forced to move to a new world. On Cygnus Beta, they work to rebuild their society alongside their distant relatives of the planet, while trying to preserve what remains of their culture. Focused less on hard science or action, The Best of All Possible Worlds is more about culture, romance and the ethics and practicalities of telepathy.

Mirage (Mirage duology) by Somaiya Daud

Young adult. Eighteen-year-old Amani lives on an isolated moon under the oppressive occupation of the Valthek empire. When Amani is abducted, she finds herself someplace wholly unexpected: the royal palace. As it turns out, she's nearly identical to the half-Valthek, and widely hated, princess Maram, who is in need of a body double. If Amani ever wants to make it back home or see her people freed from oppression, she will have to play her role as princess perfectly. While sci-fi, this one more has the vibe of a fantasy.

An Unkindness of Ghosts by Rivers Solomon

Life on the lower decks of the generation ship HSS Matilda is hard for Aster, an outcast even among outcasts, trying to survive in a system not dissimilar to the old antebellum South. The ship’s leaders have imposed harsh restrictions on their darker skinned people, using them as an oppressed work force as they travel toward their supposed Promised Land. But as Aster finds a link between the death of the ship’s sovereign and the suicide of her own mother, she realizes there may be a way off the ship.

Where It Rains in Color by Denise Crittendon

The planet Swazembi is a utopia of color and beauty, the most beautiful of all its citizens being the Rare Indigo. Lileala was just named Rare Indigo, but her strict yet pampered life gets upended when her beautiful skin is struck by a mysterious sickness, leaving it covered in scars and scabs. Meanwhile, voices start to whisper in Lileala's mind, bringing to the surface a past long forgotten involving her entire society.

Eacaping Exodus (Escaping Exodus duology) by Nicky Drayden

Seske is the heir to the leader of a clan living inside a gigantic, spacefaring beast, of which they frequently need to catch a new one to reside in as their presence slowly kills the beast from the inside. While I found the ending rushed with regards to plot and character, the worldbuilding is very fresh and the overall plot of survival and class struggle an interesting one. It’s also sapphic!

Chain-Gang All-Stars by Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah*

In a near future America, inmates on death row or with life sentences in private prisons can choose to participate in death matches for entertainment. If they survive long enough - a rare case indeed - they regain their freedom. Among these prisoners are Loretta Thurwar and Hamara "Hurricane Staxxx" Stacker, partners behind the scenes and close to the deadline of a possible release - if only they can survive for long enough. As the game continues to be stacked against them and protests mount outside, two women fight for love, freedom, and their own humanity. Chain-Gang All-Stars is bleak and unflinching as well as genuinely hopeful in its portrayal of a dark but all to real possible future.

Parable of the Sower (Earthseed duology) by Octavia E. Butler*

In a bleak future, Lauren Olamina lives with her family in a gated community, one of few still safe places in a time of chaos. When her community falls, Lauren is forced on the run. As she makes her way toward possible safety, she picks up a following of other refugees, and sows the seeds of a new ideology which may one day be the saviour of mankind. Very bleak and scarily realistic, Parable of the Sower will make you both fear for mankind and regain your hope for humanity.

Binti (Binti trilogy) by Nnedi Okorafor

Young adult novella. Binti is the first of the Himba people to be accepted into the prestigious Oomza University, the finest place of higher learning in all the galaxy. But as she embarks on her interstellar journey, the unthinkable happens: her ship is attacked by the terrifying Meduse, an alien race at war with Oomza University.

War Girls (War Girls duology) by Tochi Onyebuchi

In an enviromentally fraught future, the Nigerian civil war has flared back up, utilizing cybernetics and mechs to enhance its soldiers. Two sisters, by bond if not by blood, are separated and end up on differing sides of the struggle. Brutal and dark, with themes of dehumanization of soldiers through cybernetics that turn them into weapons, and the effect and trauma this has on them.

The Space Between Worlds (The Space Between Worlds duology) by Micaiah Johnson

Multiverse travel is finally possible, but there’s a catch: No one can visit a world where their counterpart is still alive. Enter Cara, whose parallel selves happen to be exceptionally good at dying. As such she has a very special job in traveling to these worlds, hoping to keep her position long enough to gain citizenship in the walled-off Wiley City, away from the wastes where she grew up. But her job is dangerous, especially when she gets on the tracks of a secret that threatens the entire multiverse. Really cool worldbuilding and characters, also featuring a sapphic lead!

The Fifth Season (The Broken Eart trilogy) by N.K. Jemisin*

In a world regularly torn apart by natural disasters, a big one finally strikes and society as we know it falls, leaving people floundering to survive in a post apocalyptic world, its secrets and past to be slowly revealed. We get to follow a mother as she races through this world to find and save her missing daughter. While mostly fantasy in genre, this series does have some sci-fi flavor, and is genuinely some of the best books I've ever read, please read them.

The Women Could Fly by Megan Giddings*

In an alternate version of our present, the witch hunt never ended. Women are constantly watched and expected to marry young so their husbands can keep an eye on them. When she was fourteen, Josephine's mother disappeared, leveling suspicions at both mother and daughter of possible witchcraft. Now, nearly a decade and a half later, Jo, in trying to finally accept her missing mother as dead, decides to follow up on a set of seemingly nonsensical instructions left in her will. Features a bisexual lead!

The Prey of Gods by Nicky Drayden

South African-set scifi featuring gods ancient and new, robots finding sentience, dik-diks, and a gay teen with mind control abilities. An ancient goddess seeks to return to her true power no matter how many humans she has to sacrifice to get there. A little bit all over the place but very creative and fresh.

The Summer Prince by Alaya Dawn Johnson*

Young adult. Young artist June Costa lives in Palmares Tres, a beautiful, matriarchal city relying heavily on tradition, one of which is the Summer King. The most recent Summer King is Enki, a bold boy and fellow artist. With him at her side, June seeks to finally find fame and recognition through her art, breaking through the generational divide of her home. But growing close to Enki is dangerous, because he, like all Summer Kings, is destined to die.

The Blood Trials (The Blood Gifted duology) by N.E. Davenport

After Ikenna's grandfather is assasinated, she is convinced that only a member of the Praetorian guard, elite soldiers, could’ve killed him. Seeking to uncover his killer, Ikenna enrolls in a dangerous trial to join the Praetorians which only a quarter of applicants survive. For Ikenna, the stakes are even higher, as she's hiding forbidden blood magic which could cost her her life. Mix of fantasy and sci-fi. While I didn’t super vibe with this one, I suspect fans of action packed romantasy will enjoy it.

Babel-17 by Samuel R. Delany

1960s classic. Rydra Wong is a space captain, linguist and poet who is set on learning to understand Babel-17, a language which is humanity's only clue at the enemy in an interstaller war. But Babel-17 is more than just a language, and studying it may change Rydra forever.

Pet (Pet duology) by Akwaeke Emezi

Young adult novella. Jam lives in a utopian future that has been freed of monsters and the systems which created and upheld them. But then she meets Pet, a dangerous creature claiming to be hunting a monster still among them, prepared to stop at nothing to find them. While I personally found the word-building in Pet lacking, it deftly handles dark subjects of what makes a human a monster.

Bonus AKA I haven’t read these yet but they seem really cool

Lion's Blood by Steven Barnes

Alternate history in which Africans colonized South America while vikings colonized the North. The vikings sell abducted Celts and Franks as slaves to the South, one of which is eleven-years-old Irish boy Aidan O'Dere, who was just bought by a Southern plantation owner.

The Sound of Stars by Alechia Dow

Young adult dystopia. Ellie lives in a future where humanity is under the control of the alien Ilori. All art is forbidden, but Ellie keeps a secret library; when one of her books disappears, she fears discovery and execution. M0Rr1S, born in a lab and raised to be emotionless, finds her library, and though he should deliver her for execution, he finds himself obsessed with human music. Together the two embark on a roadtrip which may save humanity.

Womb City by Tlotlo Tsamaase

Lelah lives in future Botswana, but despite money and fame she finds herself in an unhappy marriage, her body controlled via microchip by her husband. After burying the body of an accidental hit and run, Lelah's life gets worse when the ghost of her victim returns to enact bloody vengeance.

Orleans by Sherri L. Smith

Young adult. Fen de la Guerre, living in a quarantined Gulf Coast left devestated by storms and sickness, is forced on the run with a newborn after her tribe is attacked. Hoping to get the child to safety, Fen seeks to get to the other side of the wall, she teams up with a scientist from the outside the quarantine zone.

Everfair by Nisi Shawl

A neo-victorian alternate history, in which a part of Congo was kept safe from colonisation, becoming Everfair, a safe haven for both the people of Congo and former slaves returning from America. Here they must struggle to keep this home safe for them all.

The Splinter in the Sky by Kemi Ashing-Giwa

Space opera. Enitan just wants to live a quiet life in the aftermath of a failed war of conquest, but when her lover is killed and her sister kidnapped, she's forced to leave her plans behind to save her sister.

You were the fault in the stars—an anomaly right from your first breath.

The sky people, who technically were your own, had descended upon Pandora with a singular intention of seizing what was not theirs, continuing the vicious cycle of destruction and resolution that had marred their history.

In the midst of this chaos, your parents, two faceless soldiers whose names and faces are shrouded in a haze of pain and heartache, had their own hidden agenda that they pursued with reckless abandon.

Their clandestine romance, born out of passion and desperation, resulted in your fragile birth—a constant reminder of their illicit love in a world that will struggle to accept you.

Much like spider, whom you considered your own brother now, the two of you were both deemed too young for cryogenic preservation and left behind on the unfamiliar terrain of the alien planet.

Unfortunately unlike Spider, your body was weak, afflicted with a genetic strain inherited from one of your biological parents. Perhaps this, among other factors, contributed to the decision to abandon you on Pandora, leaving you to face the harsh realities of survival alone.

Despite your rational understanding of the circumstances, as you came to accept the voice in your head as your own and not a figment of your imagination, the unjustness of their decision still lingers within you.

It certainly wasn’t fair.

Your delicate condition left you confined to the high camp, unable to roam freely and appreciate the majestic wonders of Pandora like Spider. Every step you took was accompanied by painful bouts of coughing, requiring you to rely on a specialized oxygen mask designed to alleviate your symptoms.

Even within the safety of the base built for humans, the air meant to sustain you offered no respite. Such was the irony of your existence, born into a world where both forms of air you breathed posed a constant threat to your survival. Life had thrown you a curveball long before you even knew what it meant.

But it wasn't all doom and gloom.

Although you were too young to return to Earth and too ill to venture far from your room, you seized the opportunity to explore what was within your reach. Every video log, every movie, and every book, left behind by the sky people, some of which a child shouldn’t have access to was reviewed by you to fill in the absence of adventure in your day.

For a while, it was sufficient, and you gradually came to terms with the inevitability of your fate. There was no cure for your ailment, not on Pandora, and certainly not without the funds to obtain one. You accepted that you would die here, in this place, as you.

It was during this time that you became fascinated with the study of physiology, absorbing every bit of knowledge about your own body and how it could have been saved under different circumstances. You spent countless hours researching medical practices and surgeries, diving deep into your own anatomy and discovering how various medications and herbs could extend or improve life.

Sharing your newfound knowledge with Spider, Lo’ak, and Kiri became a daily ritual that brought you joy and excitement. You would eagerly offer up fascinating facts to the Sully children and Kiri whenever they stopped by to visit or fetch your brother.

Though they didn't always grasp the intricacies of physiology like you did, they were just as enthusiastic to learn and would often opt to stay cooped up in your room, asking questions both silly and serious, and enjoying the happiness that radiated from you.

The moments spent with Spider, Lo’ak, and Kiri in your room were some of the best memories you would always treasure. It was through your eagerness to share your newfound knowledge and energy that you got to know them better, especially Kiri, who became your closest friend and confidante. You were so close that she was like a sister to you, always by your side.

However, the limitations imposed by your illness often left you feeling lonely and isolated when your friends were not around. Your physical limitations reminded you that you had a faulty body that was unable to explore the vast world of Pandora like they could. And that is where you messed up.

You fell into a deep depression, which gradually turned into a false sense of determination. You felt like you could survive out there like Spider, or rather, that you wanted to. What was the point of living if you had to live with this feeling of not being in control? It was actually pathetic.

It was a reckless decision to leave the safety of your home and venture into the forest, following the group of newly-adults, taking care to move slowly so as not to cough and give yourself away. It was even worse when you brazenly entered the Omaticaya clan, knowing full well that you were a stranger and seen as an enemy of the natives.

Being surrounded by creatures larger than you, most of them hissing and armed with weapons, was overwhelming. Panic set in, causing hyperventilation, which was exacerbated by your illness. Despite the mask, it was difficult to breathe, doing very little to keep you conscious and your eyes began to roll to the back of your head.

You welcome the darkness, craving the peace it brought, but never enough to end your life yourself. In that moment, you felt alive for once, and you never wanted to leave. You had no desire to return to the life you once had.

But things don't work that way, and eventually, your eyes flutter open. For a moment, you're disoriented, you wonder if you're still gone—whether you're dead or just existing to not exist. Your vision is still blurry, but as you blink and flicker your eyes, the colors of glowing, bioluminescent blue slowly come into focus.

The sight before you is truly breathtaking. The glow emanating from the tree mesmerizes you and fills you with a sense of wonder and awe. As you gaze at it in rapture, you feel an intense urge to touch it, to feel its warmth and energy. You reach out your hand, but to your shock, the hand that extends is not yours.

The hand that hovers before you is large, bony, and blue, with five fingers like yours. Confusion and bewilderment seize you, and you stammer out a feeble, "W-What?" as you try to make sense of what is happening.

As you stare at the mysterious blue hand, your eyes widen when you see another identical hand firmly grasp on the blue hand hovering before you. It's not just a visual illusion—you can feel the pressure on your skin. Slowly your eyes follow up the arm of the mysterious hand to find Kiri smiling softly at you, tears glistening in her eyes.

The sight of her tears immediately worries you, filling your head with warning bells and you return the squeeze, “Kiri, what’s wrong?” you ask, voice oozing in concern.

She returns your concern with a wider smile, her teeth gleaming under the bioluminescent light and shakes her head, “I’m okay,” she assures you, her hand trembling as she continues, “It’s just… to see you like this makes me so happy.”

Confusion etches on your face as you furrow your brow, struggling to comprehend Kiri's statement, "See me like what?" you mumble, tilting your head quizzically. Your eyes dart back to the now intertwined hands before you, trying to make sense of what you're missing.

As you feel Kiri's hand on the other bony blue hand, you can't help but notice that it's not your own. The hand is obviously Na'vi, which you are not. Your mind is filled with unanswered questions, and the nagging feeling of not understanding the situation consumes you. You look back at her, repeating your question with a sense of urgency, "What do you mean, Kiri? When you say 'see you like this', what am I like?"

Kiri kneels down beside you, and you feel her release your hand. She slides it up your arm and firmly grasps your bicep, while her other arm reaches around your upper back and uses all her strength to pull you up into a sitting position. You're momentarily discombobulated, realizing you must have been lying down before, but you can't remember when or how you ended up in that position.

“You fainted,” she replies softly after a beat of silence, pulling on you slightly to lean more on her. You look up at her, mouth slightly agape at her words, “You almost died,” she continues, brows frowning like her lips, “We almost lost you.”

The weight of her words hits you hard, and you feel a lump form in your throat. You inhale sharply, only to realize that when you do, your lungs contact and flatten smoothly without a following cough. It's a strange sensation, and you can't help but marvel at it for a moment, grateful to be breathing easily again.

Then your attention is back on Kiri, eyeing her questionably, as you notice something strange, “Did I grow or have you gotten shorter?” Whether it was sitting or standing, Kiri is normally seen towering over you by several feet, but right now she’s exactly the same level as you.

Kiri's expression twists into a grimace, and she opens her mouth to answer, but before she can speak, another voice cuts in, firm and straight to the point, “No! You have passed through the eyes of Eywa and returned.”

Your gaze shoots up to the source, and you find yourself gazing into the piercing yellow eyes of a female Na'vi standing before you. They felt as if she was looking straight through you, leaving nothing hidden or unexamined. Immediately your struck by the intensity of her. There's a raw power to her presence that feels both intimidating and awe-inspiring, as if you're standing before a force of nature.

“Come again?” you stutter, worry slowly creeping up on you as you are once again confused by another statement. You weren’t understanding a lot of what was going on right now. You tear your eyes from her to look back at Kiri and raise your brows at seeing Lo’ak and Spider now standing behind her.

When did they get there?

“What does she mean? Who is she?” You whisper hurriedly to your best friend, glancing occasionally at the boys, hoping if Kiri doesn’t give you the answers you want, they will.

“[Name],” another voice speaks, calling out to you. You perk up at it, instantly recognizing it to be Norm, which it was when you find him standing in his avatar body beside the mysterious woman from before. He walks closer to you, kneeling when close enough just like Kiri, “Sweetie, when you fainted, you stopped breathing for a few minutes. Jake called Max and I to help.”

Jake. That’s Kiri and Lo’ak’s dad. You’ve only met him once when he was stopping by to talk to Norm. He was really sweet and made you feel normal just like his kids.

“Okay…” you stare at him warily, waiting for him to get to the point.

He looks away briefly, seemingly to gather his thoughts before looking back at you, “Max and I know more than anyone how much you’ve been struggling. So even though we didn’t have the resources before, we were determined to help you,” he pauses as Max comes up behind him and beam at you, “We started making you an Avatar 6 years ago. Some test still needed to be ran but we’re out of time.”

You push away from Kiri slightly, lips forming a tight line as your squint at him, “What are you trying to say, Norm?” A part of you knew deep down, but the denial was heavy, to think you could be like everyone else, no illness or restrictions was a myth.

“You’re human body died, you are now consciously living in your avatar.”

His words caused a reaction, albeit a slow one. First your lips start to quiver, and your body trembles in disbelief before tears pool at your eyes. Kiri quickly wraps you in her arms, laying her head on top of yours as you lean your face into her to conceal your choked sobs.

To think something you had dreamed about has actually came true. The many nights you stay up, coming up with solutions to you, the problem. You didn’t know what else to feel, if not relief beyond the depths of your soul.

“Eywa has gave you a second chance,” Kiri mutters lowly, but it was loud to you as her hot breath fans your ears and cause it to twitch, “I’m so happy for you, [Name].”

This time you pull away from her completely, smiling up at her with glossed over eyes and chest filled with so much warmth, you might overheat, “Thank you, Kiri.” Slowly, you rise up from your sitting position with her help. You were stunned at the distance from the ground at full height. This was going to take some time to get used to.

“Max, Norm… Thank you, I can’t express that enough.” You try to walk to them, but your legs were wobbly so you more like stumble instead. Eventually, you reach them and pull them both into a hug, which probably looked silly as Max was the shortest by far in the bunch.

“You being safe and healthy is enough.” Max says, being the first to pull away and Norm nods, agreeing with him as he pulls away next, “We still have to run test though.”

You chuckle at that, rolling your eyes as you nod to him, “Understood.” You didn’t care how many test they had to run, as long as you were able to run and breathe without falling over.

Run.

You wanted to run.

Your ears flicker at the thought, stalling your side quest as your attention is drawn to them. You went to grab them in awe and felt something swish behind you, “Huh?” You twist your body, wait a second, and laugh when your eyes land on a tail; your tail, “Amazing!” You exclaim, smile growing wider.

Someone clears their throat, successfully making you stop and look at who did. To your surprise it was Jake, who was standing by the female Na’vi from earlier. He too had a smile on his face, happy to see you back and better than ever.

Though he haven’t spent much time with you, he was sympathetic to your situation, as it felt somewhat similar to his past self and unknowingly to you, have allowed Norm and Max to create a Avatar for you. It was only a matter of time before you became one like him.

“How are you feeling?,” he smiles warmly at you, like a father does his child. It made you feel giddy and shy, “It might feel strange at first, but you'll get used to it.”

You give him a curt bow, afraid to look him in the eyes. Before it was easy, it just felt different now. You couldn’t explain it, you just knew, “Thank you, it feels… different but I’m still me.”

He nods, walking closer to stop a foot away, “Good… [Name], you are Na’vi now. That means you have the opportunity to become apart of the Omaticaya clan.” He raises a hand and places it on your shoulder.

You knew what that meant. That means you’ll have to complete rites to become one of them. But that was the least of your worries; you knew nothing out the land except from what you read or what Norm brought back and you didn’t know how to hunt or fight for yourself. There was no way you can pass.

“Dad,” Lo’ak steps forward to protest but gets shut down with one look, his eyes cast down and he steps back into the background.

Poor Lo’ak, you thought, didn’t even stand a chance.

“Neteyam is a good teacher and warrior. You’ll learn fast.” Jake tells you, proudly.

“T-Thank you.” You bow again, much deeper this time. You didn’t know why you were bowing or if it was even appropriate in this situation, you just read somewhere that it was respectful.

He nods again, turning away to walk over to his son, the one he calls Neteyam. He whispers something to him, something that causes his lips to form a tight line and look over at you in annoyance as his dad leave him there.

You flinch at that and look away abruptly, just now taking notice how there were a whole ton of Na’vi circling around you all. How overwhelmed must you’ve been to not notice?

Suddenly, the air was knocked out of you temporarily as a force hits your stomach. Looking down, your body relaxes when you see it’s Spider. It was a little weird to be the taller one this time, but that didn’t stop you from returning his hug.

“Do that again and I will kill you!” He spits, glaring up at you in faux aggression. His hold on you, along with the pout on his lips tells the opposite of his words, “Scared the hell out of me.” he eventually admits, glare softening a great deal.

“That’s the opposite of what we want, bro.” Lo’ak comes up beside you and swings his arms over your shoulder, pulling you into a side hug of some sort, “But if you do, I’ll team up with him to make it happen.” He teases, smirking at you.

Kiri comes up from behind to push him off you, replacing his arm with hers around your waist, “Over my dead body,” she rolls her eyes and cheese at you, “I can’t wait to show you pandora. You’re going to love it,” she says, tugging you with her towards the forest, “Come on.”

Glamrock Foxy and his Crew

While I don't think I'll have anything with Foxy for my Glamrock Kids- multiplayer au thing, I do have ideas for him.

TLDR: Cap'n Foxy served as the Pizzaplex's unofficial babysitter before the Superstar Daycare was built. Between this and his increasingly popular theater show (Cap'n Foxy's Pirate Adventure), it was decided he would be given two additional crewmates, Bangle and Bitty.

Serving as an extra pair of eyes and ears for Foxy, they help out in the theater show as well as fulfill duties the other animatronics are too large for, such as finding lost kids or helping run scavenger hunts across the Pizzaplex.

The Chaos Twins also live up to their Pirate heritage (much to everyone's chragrin) and have particularly sticky fingers.

COMMISSIONS OPEN

I choose to believe that Cap'n Foxy is normally a part of the pizzaplex, but during the events of the game was temporarily moved to a separate location to run shows there.

Cap'n Foxy is in charge of Pirate's Cove in addition to the Pirate Adventure Show.

The Pirate Adventure show's served as entertainment between the Glamrock concerts as well as a draw in for the older audience

shows ranged from thrilling acrobatics feats to comedic high sea adventures

these occasionally would have guest stars, most commonly Monty (this slowed down when he became an official Glamrock as opposed to the understudy)

there was a running joke where Foxy would accuse Monty of eating his hand and Monty would deny it with increasingly absurd alibis

he'd also assist Chica in her water show (Chica of the Sea) before that was shut down, serving as the villain

his hook can be exchanged for a hidden foldable sword hidden in back behind his coat in addition to a regular sword for his hand

he has two functioning eyes, tho the right one is typically only after flash photography (allowing him a quicker recovery time)

despite him being an older model, he is the fastest of the animatronics (excluding perhaps Bonnie)

before the Superstar Daycare was built, Pirates Cove was where parents would leave their younger kids for the day

likes puzzles- has a small stash hidden in his "room" in Pirate's Cove that he'll break out on occasion

it got to the point where he learned how to repair himself (and the others to a limited extent) just so he didn't have to go

with his increased popularity (and increased children being dropped off at Pirate's Cove, it was decided that Foxy was to be given "crewmates"

no one consulted him on this- Bangle and Bitty were just presented to him one weekend

Bangle and Bitty serve as Foxy's extra eyes in Pirate's Cove in addition to being his assistants in addition to being genia pigs for potential upgrades in the other animatronics

their smaller size allows them to access hiding places kids like to stow away in*

they also can be sent through out the pizzaplex to help out with the other attractions (Fazzerblast, Raceway, Gator Golf, etc) when they get overcrowded with guests

this requires a costume change per area

however, they have a programming bug: the only person (human or animatronic) they have to listen to is Foxy himself. Foxy thinks this is hilarious

Bangle

the unoffical "bard" of the group, Bangle is the one to provide the extra dramatic music in the middle of a show** when necessary

they can connect their instruments to a small speaker in their chest cavity

their voice box has the most range of vocals (prototype to Chica's), allowing them to fill different roles for the show as well, though they commonly work as Bitty's straight man

this has led to some confusion with guests as to whether or not they are supposed to be a male or a female (the answer is Yes.)

their joints have a unique locking system

any part of their body can be easily removed or reinstalled when unlocked (when locked they are slight less sturdy than a typical endo's joints but serve their purpose)

they can connect to them wirelessly and still have (limited) control

has a running gag on the show of "falling apart" particularly when they are stressed out or worried

occasionally takes off head and makes fun of shakespeare

is not fond of toddlers or infants

outside of shows, is given free roam of the Pizzaplex as a rule (so long as Pirate's Cove isn't too busy)

LOVES photobombing guest's pictures with Bitty

Left eye had to be replaced early on after they lost it mid-show (crashed a touch too hard into the stage set). That eye is far more sensitve to light, being designed for btter night vision

Bitty

smallest of all the animatronics in the Pizzplex (excluding Mini Musicman and perhaps Helpy if he counts)

they work with Bangle to bring the kids upstage and get them involved

Bitty rarely speaks of their own accord

typically they express themselves through sound effects projected from their chest speaker

Additionally, they can connect to the pizzaplex intercom system and have a microphone that allows stead or security to make impromptu announcements wherever they are out

through this they can make fake impromptu announcements through out the pizzaplex in any of the other Animatronic’s voices

eyes were upgraded to have better night vision and depth perception after crashing into Bangle too many times on a landing during Pirate Adventure's dimmer lit shows. (these were the prototypes for Roxy's eyes)

increases light sensitivity BUT their aim and accuracy has never been better

thinks Roxy is cool and so regularly steals her makeup

the pirate obsessed with treasure, Bitty has a bad habit of stealing things from both their fellow animatronics and the staff

they have hidey-holes across the pizzaplex crammed to the brim with stuff ranging from anywhere to staff badges to Freddy's top hat to enormous bags of Faz tokens

fond of riddles, if answered correctly they give out prizes (usually a large bag of faztokens but if a guest gives a particularly clever/funny answer they'll give them rarer items)

Papastarion Headcanons Pt. 7

The brainrot doesn’t stop. I am so sorry.

•Over time, Astarion manages to re-attune himself with his elven nature. Primarily, he manages to reverie, most nights. The nightmares may always prey on him, but there are nights of peace, too. Mostly recent memories, even amidst the chaos of the grand adventure their now disjointed band had embarked on as unsuspecting victims, and even less suspecting heroes. The warmth of his beloved’s touch, welcome and genuine. The harmless annoyance when he manages to rile Gale up into one of his infamous rants. Karlach playing fetch with Scratch. Nights by the campfire (though he tries not to think of all the bugs.) Community, with all its wonders and growing pains.

•He finds it easier to slip into reverie properly if he has something to focus on. Some nights that means chewing on a problem to be solved for the sake of the Underdark’s newest settlement. Other nights it’s the sound of Thea’s (Tav/Durge’s) heartbeat. Then, once it’s no longer just the two of them, he takes great comfort in listening to the sound of their unborn child’s heartbeat. As much as doubts and worries mix with excitement and, gods, hope, that sound brings a great deal of peace.

•He doesn’t rely on reverie to help him remember the little details of their children’s lives. He doesn’t want to forget a moment of them, especially since dhampirs don’t inherit their vampiric parent’s immortality. He journals, dating everything. First words. When their first steps happened, and where, and how old they were. What their favorite food was once they learned to tolerate solids. When their fangs came in. When they lost their first tooth. Anecdotes. Simple things like “Eldritch had a fever today, and so refused to sleep anywhere that wasn’t against me so he could keep cool,” or “We tried cutting Nim’s hair today, and she might be more of a peacock about her locks than her father,” or even just “I hugged Pip today, for a quite the while…I don’t want to think about the day where he decides a hug from his world-saving parents is a detriment to his social reputation.”

•Astarion is terrible at baby talk. He just doesn’t have that instinct, or realize that’s something people do. Instead, he’ll walk around the house with a baby 30 days into their existence explaining the finer points socio-political structures and how they effect lawmaking decisions.

•Traveling never really stops, not even when Thea’s pregnant. If she’s good to go and they’ve got somewhere they want or need to be, they go. That doesn’t mean Astarion isn’t Stressed to the Max the Whole Time.

•Co-conspirator Supreme. If there’s a prank to be pulled, he wants in.

•He doesn’t realize that he’s not all that different from Other Adults to the kids. He doesn’t realize that to them Dad has always been kind of chilly to the touch, or that his fangs are just longer versions of their own, or that his eyes are just red. That’s just the color they are. He’s only scary if something is scary to them—he’s never scary to them, only for them.

•He makes blankets for each before they’re born, because he doesn’t want their first instinct when he holds them to be anything other than safety, and the feeling of warmth.

•And gods help him when they reach that inquisitive “must touch everything” phase. Those fangs he was so worried they would fear inevitably become Forbidden Toys they all try to grab, and sometimes he’s too tired to even pull their hands away.

•Yeah, he complains about it constantly.

•Yeah, he misses it when they’re older.

•No, he’ll never admit it.

•Protective as he is, he does enjoy bringing them around the spawn and his siblings—once they’re older, of course. He’s still terrible at sharing with them when it comes to baby holding privileges, but he loves showing off.

•He’s that parent that won’t stop bragging about their kids. He talks about them like they hung the stars in the sky and command the sun to rise for their own entertainment. If you don’t know him, it’s annoying. If you do, it’s still annoying, but it’s at least endearing, too.

•Misses the baby stage more than he thinks he will. He tries not to dwell on the fact that his children are mortal, because he’s glad they don’t bear his lot in life, but he also doesn’t want to think about the day they’re no longer sharing the world with him and their mother.

•Is so scared he won’t actually manage to be a good parent, but quickly adapts when he realizes that they’re his, and he’s going to take care of them, and that matters above all else.

•Spoils them rotten. If the kids want something, they know to ask Dad. (They usually don’t even have to ask.)

Boy oh boy get ready for another Rant

This time about my bug insert in Obsidian lanterns gator boys series!!

Again, doing this so I won't mix up her backstory with my other listeners

Korey Adiel is maybe 18-20 years old, I haven't decided yet

She/They pronouns :3

Half Korean!!

While energetic and optimistic with her friends, she can be a bit wary with new people

Fucking thrill seeker /hj

Became a hunter solely for the thrill (and because of a deal she made that I'll probably talk about in a later post)

Half of her scars are literally just from her being an adrenaline junkie, once (multiple times) when she was 13 years old, she climbed up a tree to see if it'll hurt when she jumps from it, proceeded to break her leg in the process

Her family is actually doing pretty decent in wealth, not really struggling with money, only with their children's chaos

Parents are pretty neglectful since they kinda just let her get in trouble and barely spare her a glance when she gets hurt

She has a homemade star necklace from her dad, and she treasures it dearly despite the negligence

Silly little gal just wants validation from others :(

Korey's grandparents are the complete opposite of their parents though

They watch her like a hawk when she's spending the night at their house. Bro is NOT getting in trouble while they're watching

They have 2 brothers, Ezra is the oldest at 24 years old, and Noah is the youngest at 14.

Basically, Korey is the forgotten middle child /hj

Korey was actually raised as a boy for most of their childhood as their parents didn't really want a daughter. Noah was basically treated as her "replacement"

Ezra fully indulges her chaotic behavior, and sometimes, they string along Noah into their shenanigans

Jesus christ, they rain hell fire when the 3 of them team up. The Adiel siblings all have a very strong bond with each other!

She has heterochromia! Blue and Hazel eyes :3

They have a scrapbook where they journal and doodle flowers and bugs 'n lil facts about them, her favorite is the rosy maple moth!

Wasn't even supposed to be at the swamp. the girl just has a terrible sense of direction

Even when they got their leg injured, they still had the urge to run around and cause as much chaos as possible

They get along with almost all of the hunters they work with! Almost. (cough, Anthony, cough)

She has a LOT of warmth in her. In consequence, she gets fevers a lot but barely ever gets a cold!

Thanks to her risky adventures, she's pretty agile and fast

Has hangouts with Raine and Esther from @willowve01 and @asmrbrainrot every weekend where they just talk about their day :3

"Sonic's Dimension".

How do you think Sonic feels representing literally his entire dimension. Like. He's just a hedgehog who loves adventure, yet his entire dimension is named after him. Like. Imagine the weight of that responsiblity- You're like. Fifteen years old. And you're a hero renowned across dimensions to the point where your own dimension is named after you. Like…that's. Alot to live up to. And Sonic goes with the flow n thingys but like. That's. Alot of pressure and expectations. He's fifteen years old. Also, imagine Eggman's reaction to that. Like, he's tried to conquer the world before. And, now, the hedgehog who bested him time and time again, has their own dimension named after him. Also, bc I <33the idea of Super Sonic being like. A legend kinda hero thingy. A myth that no-one ever believes until they see it for themselves. A story that you'd tell to children. The living, breathing, embodiment of hope and kindness and freedom. A shooting star that lights up the sky when everything seems lost. A fragmented piece of the sun itself. Like. The Chaos Dimension, bc Sonic is so so so closely tied to the Chaos Emeralds. To the point where theories exist. He's probably the most well-known user of the chaos emeralds, and nobody knows his origins. He just….showed up one day, Like That. Like, what if it was believed that he was created by the chaos emeralds- Made from pure chaos energy or swagever, a being free from alignment, a being free from past ties, a being that is freedom itself, and is allowed to shape itself in any way it desires- And by that, I mean, it can embody any concept it wants depending on what path it decides to take. And Sonic chose freedom. He chose hope. He chose kindness, he chose protection, and he chose love. And he can choose anything, but he's just going with the flow and helping whenever he can. Because he wants to help. It's almost like bringing happiness and freedom and kindness and love everywhere he goes is just…second nature, for him. Sonic's chao isn't a hero,or dark chao. It's neutral. Because Sonic, himself, at the beginning of his creation, is entirely neutral. He's free from any origin that could change his personality much, he's free to shape himself and be shaped by the people and world he surrounds himself with. Sonic is shaped by himself and his freedom, and his friends. The people he cares about. The people who care about him so so so much. Sonic literally represents an entire dimension he's fifteen years old. The pressure. The expectationsthe ramifications bro the rammys bro ididnt think abt the rammys .

humans are the spiritualists actually. humans are the religious, striving to reach enlightenment in all things by any means necessary. humans are the mediums and the fortune-tellers and the soothsayers, humans look to the stars for meaning and understanding. humans search for purpose in a universe crafted of pure chaos, and they find it, or if they can't, they make their own.

humans are the chefs with their sleeves stained orange from spices and fragrant broths, humans take the strange and dangerous plants their world cruelly gives to them and makes foods so wonderful and beautiful and vast that worlds of flavor live within the very air around them. they heal the sick, they soothe the soul with hearty bowls warmed by fireside.

humans are the storytellers, the skalds and the bards and the men sat 'round campfires with guitars in the dark singing hymns to their lovers, odes to the clouds. they tell tales of heroes long past and dangers overcome, to prepare their children for the obstacles and remind them where they came from, to foster adventure and honor and courage.

humans are the wonder and the music and the salt and the sugar and the heart and the soul, they are the spice of the universe. if there is anyone out there to be found, and i hope that there will be, we will bring to them pastries and curries and hope and prayer and we will teach them to tell stories, and they will use our teaching to tell their own children of our kindness and our reverence, of our bravery and freedom, of our spirit, should we ever be allowed to meet them.

general x reader headcanons for the guardians post-vol.3

(Can be read as either romantic or platonic)

Warnings: Spoilers!!!

Includes Peter Quill, Gamora, Nebula, Mantis, Drax, Rocket, Groot, and Adam Warlock

Peter Quill:

You go with Peter to Earth to support him, and it’s certainly an experience

You’ve never been to Earth, or at least it’s been a very long time (you can decide if you’re an alien or not in this scenario lol)

You visit all the places he says he went as a child, even if they’re drastically different after several decades

You enjoy catching up on Earth music together, discovering all the new bands and Peter absolutely losing his mind over unlimited music streaming services

Gamora:

You’re delighted when Gamora comes back to the Ravagers, hugging her tightly upon her return

As badly as you feel for the Guardians who lost their version of Gamora, you’re excited for the adventures and memories you can build with this one

She really does have a sweet side when you get through the tough exterior, and you’ve become very close with her since she joined

She has quite the story to tell when she gets back too, and you listen intently as she recalls the craziness of the last few days

Nebula:

You stay with her to help rebuild Knowhere, and soon enough it starts to feel like a real home for not just you but also all the kids and creatures you adopted

You love seeing the softer side of her, and she’s a great leader as well

When a long day of work is done, you like to spend time together in her apartment or the main square, relaxing or having fun

You both finally feel like you’re able to have a somewhat normal life now, and you don’t want to ever let it go

Mantis:

Even when she’s on her own self discovery journey, she still visits you quite often on Knowhere

Eventually she asks you to come with her on some adventures, and of course you agree

She shows you some of the places she’s been and all the new things she’s discovered

You didn’t know it was possible, but somehow you love her even more now that she’s found herself

Drax:

It’s so fun to see Drax being a dad, finally doing what he lost all those years ago

You help him care for all the Star Children, helping them learn your language and trying to learn theirs as well

You like to make fun of him for dancing with them even though he’s been very adamant in the past that he doesn’t dance

You’re so glad that he stayed with you on Knowhere because he truly brings life to a place of destruction

Rocket:

You and Rocket have adopted all the baby raccoons as your own, giving them all the love they deserve and more

Neither of you have any idea how to actually raise raccoons, especially because these ones aren’t fully sentient like Rocket, but you do your best

They like to get into and destroy a lot of things in your apartment, and Rocket finally comes to understand the term “trash panda” after an incident with the garbage chute

Despite the chaos, though, you both enjoy the fact that you saved these babies from abuse, and you’ll never let them near harm ever again

Groot:

Groot really enjoys having you around as a constant when a lot of his family has dispersed around the universe

He knows you’re someone he can have fun with whether it’s on Knowhere or on a mission

You pick up on his language fairly quickly, and he likes that he can always talk to you

Adam Warlock:

It’s a bit weird at first becoming close with the guy who tried to destroy your home a little while ago, but you soon find out he’s a sweetheart deep down

He’s very eager to help and right his wrongs, whether that be helping rebuild Knowhere or helping the remaining Guardians on missions

He likes that you don’t mind that he’s a little strange sometimes and you never fault him for not understanding things about the world outside the Sovereign

He’s also very happy to have a new family with the Guardians and with you

FFXIV Write 2023 Day 30: Amity

“You know, I’ve been thinking,” Aeryn said slowly in the Thavnairian tongue as they watched the Garleans discuss the trade agreement and the upcoming use of the Tower.

“About what?” Varshahn asked, slipping as easily into the familiar language.

“The previous agreements, between Thavnair and Garlemald.”

“What about them?” the Satrap asked, turning his crimson gaze to her now. She leaned on a supply crate in her fur-lined Alliance coat, that familiar thinking-line creasing the space between her brows.

“Just…When last we spoke to Emet-Selch—or rather, his spirit—he spoke of many wonders, secrets of the world yet to be discovered, adventures yet to be had. Some of them have already come true, such as finding your treasure vault under the Bounty.”

Varshahn frowned. “As an Ascian, it makes sense he would know of many ancient secrets.”

“Yes,” Aeryn agreed. “But I keep thinking back to how Azdaja was lost, to a voidgate at the Crystal Tower all those centuries ago—a tower created by another empire he had built.”

Varshahn peered at her, wondering where this line of thought led.

“Allag, an empire created for certain purposes by Ascians, was also responsible for the tragedies that befell your eldest siblings,” she continued. “Bahamut was slain. Tiamat was then convinced to summon him as a primal—before she and their children were imprisoned and tormented for millennia.

“And then there’s the Dragonsong War, and I have to wonder how distant the Ascians were. It seems my Ishgardian ancestors held the blame there, but in more recent years…I can’t shake the feeling Nidhogg decided to end his cruel game and attempt to destroy Ishgard in earnest, because he perhaps detected the Ascians’ involvement in the Archbishop’s schemes through his Eyes.”

Varshahn felt a chill climbing his spine that had nothing to do with Garlemald’s weather, given his golem’s immunity.

“Bahamut and Nidhogg were meant to be protectors of this star, with your father claimed by Hydaelyn and slumbering—until he was awoken. By Garlean incursion over his resting place.”

“What is your point, Aeryn?”

She looked over at the nearly jovial Garleans—they were not a people who often showed exuberance—and she smiled at their rekindled hope and confidence. “I think Emet-Selch always knew you were at the heart of Radz-at-Han,” she said. “I think he encouraged the original trade agreements, and encouraged Thavnair’s neutrality, to keep you at bay.”

Varshahn considered that, his greater self in Radz-at-Han rumbling a growl the longer he did.

“If Garlemald had ever attempted to conquer Thavnair, you would have flown to defend it,” she continued. “Your home, your people, mean everything to you. Garlemald had the means to try, and the island has precious few other defenses against such might. But so long as Thavnair remained neutral, a free port of trade, an ally instead of a province…”

“I had no reason to fight,” he finished quietly.

“You were content to remain in hiding and see only to your own,” she said. “That was all he had to do as Solus, to neutralize a potential First Brood threat—extend a hand of friendship, and promise to leave your children alone.”

“And you disapprove.”

She frowned now, thinking about it. “Somewhat,” she said honestly. “But I’ve learned a few things about dragons over the years, so I understand, I think. Besides,” she looked again at the pleased Garleans, and smiled. “It’s made this possible. He meant for this empire to be a tool of chaos, its people pawns in the schemes of ancient beings who cared naught for them. But now, thanks to that prior agreement, Thavnair’s perfectly positioned to help raise them from the ashes of those manipulations.” She turned back to him and smiled. “And you, Vrtra, have had your part in helping us protect this star, as Midgardsormr promised Her.”

The hide of his true self itched as he recalled his newly-grown scales. Any others that he shed were still carefully collected and taken to the alchemists.

He huffed out a laugh. “And full glad am I, that not all the dragons of Thavnair were content to remain upon our island—and will not be content, I think, until this entire star knows peace, and all its people are friends in truth.” He grinned at her, satisfied to see her blush and duck her head as she grasped his meaning.

“I’m no dragon,” she muttered.

“For better or worse, the blood of my sister and her daughter yet runs in your veins, child of Thavnair and Coerthas,” he said fondly. His tone became more teasing. “And your father may have let slip his nickname for you, when a temperamental child.” He chuckled as she groaned, but then he sobered.

“You are perhaps right, about the former Emperor and his schemes,” Varshahn said. “And certainly about mine own indolence, so long as our people were safe.” He shook his head at her attempted apologetic interjection. “But you are also right, that it led to this moment now. And this time, I pray, the amity between our nations is true, and shall bear fruit not only for this personal endeavor, but for generations to come.”

“So do I,” Aeryn said, pushing off the crate as Urianger called to her, though she looked to her Satrap before leaving.

Varshahn nodded for her to go, watching her stride forward to speak to her friend. “Little Storm Dragon” her stepfather had said, on account of her Coerthan side—having no idea back then how close to the truth her heritage fell—and her tempestuous nature as a child.

An apt nickname yet, Varshahn thought, though she had somewhat better control of herself as an adult. Yet storms of change came with her, and even an ancient wyrm such as he could be swept up in those currents.

Smiling in response to the hopeful grins of the Garleans turning his way as he rejoined them, he was thankful for those storms, and the peace following in their wake.

i want to share my future bad kids bc that i came up with for a fic. i love them dearly. Below the cut bc its so long.

Adaine goes to Fallinel for a while and goes into politics after college, but after quite a few years of working her ass off to fix the country, she leaves because Jawbone’s lycanthropy becomes very difficult for him to live alone. He has Sandra Lynn but they’re both getting old and he’s sick. She comes home for him, takes a job as the divination teacher at Augefort, and settles back into Elmville peacefully. I also think she dates a hell of a lot and I hc pan Adaine. I feel like with immortality, sexuality becomes pretty fluid, and Adaine very much leans into that. When she moves back to Elmville, she puts dating on pause and just teaches and cares for Jawbone (the principal of Augefort).

Fig and Ayda tour together for years. Fig loves playing and she never wants to stop. Not even when in their 30’s, Ayda decides she wants to settle down. They break up pretty amicably and Fig tours for a long time afterwards. She slows down when she hits her 40s and ends up living in Bastion City, still a rock star, but she doesn't tour quite so often or go quite so far, but she never quite stops. She's happy, and pulls tons of chicks when she wants to, but doesn't really date seriously? Even in her 40s, she's so young for an archdevil. Her friends have decades, she has centuries. She lives her young soul life for a long ass time.

Kristen spreads the gospel of Cassandra for a long time. She leaves the party to run the church and just gets too busy to continue the frequent traveling. She gets married and divorced, has a couple kids, and lives in Bastion City. She has a very amicable tradeoff with the kids and shares custody but spends the majority of her time running the church. Her kids are sweet and loved, and so is she. Her life is mundane and easy now, which she learns to really love. She just settles down and learns to channel her chaos. She becomes a very great mom, pastor, and person, doing a lot of volunteer and outreach work, loving the world, her life, and her family. I think she ends up having a very serious long-term relationship but keeps her very separate from her kids. it's a quiet life.

Riz is absolutely an investigative reporter! Murph says this in one of his fireside chats, and I wholeheartedly agree! He leaves the party first because he didn't ever want the adventuring life, he wants the detective, crime-solving part of it. He goes to school and ends up with a law degree (bc he's just cool and would absolutely take lawyer classes to make sure he was able to cite laws) and a really badass job as a reporter, kicking ass and taking names, but with words as his weapon! He stays in Bastion City, makes friends, and just is happy. He doesn't get married or have kids, but he has so much platonic love and familial love! He's so happy and cool and very effective. He likes to enlist Adaine for arcane cases, and she definitely heads over every time and stays over in his apartment and they're super close. He's also super close with fabian, but their lives are so different that it's a different kind of closeness.

Gorgug's life is super chill and simple He doesn't marry Zelda bc they're children, but he does fall head-over-heels for a woman and gets married. He leaves because he suffers a pretty severe head injury, but also because his wife is pregnant! He has a son his parents are so sweet and excited. He's a tinkerer, but also a professor at Augefort! Zac said that Gorgug may help people who are multiclassing, and I like the idea that Jawbone opens a completely new section of the school that focuses specifically on multiclassing, and Gorgug teaches both barbarian and artificer classes! He really chills out and his rage is very rare and almost always in defense of his family. Chill, happy, relaxed Gorgug just vibes with me.

FABIAN! My favorite most hc. He's a dad. He has two daughters and they're his whole entire world. Leaving the party was absolutely not his choice, but he lost his leg in a brutal battle and his body no longer cooperates with the way he needs to move. He's got chronic pain and just can't adventure any longer, so he ends up moving to a seaside town and becoming a stay-at-home dad. At some point during his recovery, his first wife leaves him and the girls and Cathilda moves in. The girls call her their Dida and she's like their other grandma. He's a stay-at-home dad and loves it! He and Aelwyn reconnect as adults and end up getting married now that they're no longer so toxic in each other's lives, and Aelwyn is an absolutely amazing stepmom. She'd never imagined having her own kids, but she loves the girls so much and they're all so happy together. Aelwyn is still a researcher and an abjurative wizard, so he happily stays at home. They might have a mansion in the sky because it's a bit in one of the fireside chats and I love to commit to a bit. They're so cute! Domestic, toxic masculinity is dead, stay-at-home dad and his smart, hot, kind, caring wife.

Also, bonus one, I am so tempted to kill Gilear. A lot of my hcs are based on actual things the cast has said, and Brennan says, "As the person who plays Gilear, I'd like to see him dead in the fucking ground." I am not a Gilear lover, I find him funny and entertaining, but there is something about that sad elf man that makes me wanna kill him. Like if we were in Spyre and I knew Gilear, I might just kill him. Straight up. (Kidding, kidding. I wouldn't kill him, but in a campaign? I'd probably attack him for fun so often bc i wouldn't have Emily at my table.) If he doesn't end up just straight-up dead, he's vice principal. It's much better to have his ex-wife's new boyfriend as his boss for the rest of his sad little life. No happiness for him. I love Emily, I love Fig. Gilear? Dead to me.
