“Did you get it?” Lilith asks and she’s far too excited for her own personality, so of course Beatrice is curious. As soon as Beatrice told Lilith her dilemma, she was calling up Camila in hushed tones.
Camila has that smile on her face, the dreadfully familiar one she had right before Beatrice was somehow signed up for an adult softball league last year.
It was tremendous fun, but she’ll never admit it to them because that would only make them spring things on her more.
Like this, apparently. “Get what?”
“I did,” Camila answers Lilith and ignores Beatrice. She makes her way to the fridge and starts mixing her own drink. Camila is probably the only one of their friend group who generally doesn’t give a damn about Lilith and her house rules. Lilith never really challenges her on it either - she glares and tries to beat Camila to the punch when it comes to digging through her things. But today she doesn’t even get up.
Meaning she is too excited about whatever it is Camila brought, which is more than likely going to be something Beatrice will hate. “What are you two hiding? I’ve known you both long enough to know all the signs of conspiring.”
They share a look and Beatrice may just stand up and leave.
“Okay so…don’t freak out.” Camila sets her down next to Beatrice’s and then pulls out her phone and starts tapping through it. Beatrice watches the sunflower keychain she has hanging from the case jangle around with each swipe of her finger. “Now, Lilith told me your situation. You need a fake girlfriend.”
Beatrice gets up. “Not another dating app, Camila. I can't…”
“No,” Lilith’s hands are on her shoulders, keeping her in place. “It’s not that.”
Camila makes a face, a wince, like it’s somehow worse than her nightmarish stint on eHarmony. “This feels vaguely familiar to when I was told I’d be taking some time away from home and ended up in a catholic boarding school.”
“Well,” Camila stops searching through her phone, apparently finding what she needed. “It’s nothing like that at all, but it might be equally as jarring. I had to break through like three security firewalls just to access this site.” She turns her phone around then for Beatrice to see the website she’s pulled up.
CAT’S CRADLE - ESCORT SERVICE

thinking about how groups in isolation grow close with rapidity, develop bonds and rely on each other for physical comfort at the same speed with which lesbians U-Haul, and so you shove a bunch of queer girls into a socially isolated situation like Cat's Cradle and they develop a shorthand, they seek each other out for the quiet touches they can't get from family or friends anymore, they collapse into cuddle puddles in the grass after training and braid each other's hair and hold each other close and watch each other die
Help I’m thinking about this post and shanmary signing to each other and the implications of that across the whole OCS.
Shannon sitting cross-legged with Beatrice in the afternoons when they’re both exhausted from training, walking her through the movements and the syntax and the variations on each sign.
Bea and Shannon use it when Shannon finally persuades Beatrice to be her lookout while she pranks Lilith.
The tall, intimidating figure who catches Bea the first time because she’s too distracted by conspiratorial grins and Shannon touching her arm as she sprints down the hall.
“Come on!” but Bea’s still fresh to the OCS, and this request is absent the snap of command that usually shadows Shannon’s voice.
In a flurry of dark hair and angry eyes she finds herself pinned to the wall by Lilith, her nails bloody from climbing the drainpipe after Shannon emptied a bucket of water down onto her from the window above.
Stunned by that touch, unmoving. Lilith, who quirks an eyebrow, “Not even going to put up a fight?”
Shannon signing to get Bea’s attention when she’s on the verge of a panic attack. Naming sensations and they’re variations on “i can feel you. i can hear you.”
“you’re here.”
Beatrice with all her languages learning this new one from Shannon and also a separate language of touch. She’s so remote at first, flinching from everything but fists, until Mary pulls her aside and makes her play stupid hand-dexterity games that leave her palms stinging and her face flushed.
Sometimes, Lilith catches her under the chin with her fingers as she walks by, a silent “chin up” reminding her she’s a warrior now, not a disgraced daughter.
Mary bracing Bea with her arm when they stumble out of a tear-gassed room, palm over Bea’s mouth because fuck knows what they put in those cannisters, fuck knows if it might be lethal in high doses.
Beatrice learns to do these things in return, turning her head into Lilith's chest when the field medic takes her gloved hands out of someone’s chest and asks for the time. Lilith's mouth, warm on her temple, she who never looks away.
Helping Mary clean the guns and butting shoulders as they work, sharing Mary's earbuds. Beatrice only nodding cryptically when Mary asks if she likes a particular song - in her head thinking ‘I like you. the song’s just noise we’re both hearing.’
Shannon and Bea mirroring their movements with the bō, wordless competitions for who can spin it the longest without dropping it. Bea watching Mary and Shannon sit out on the grass, Shannon with her arms around Mary as Mary sits bracketed by her legs, pulling up blades of grass with a complicated expression.
Bea signs on the days she doesn’t want to speak. Lilith teases that she’s one of those silent nuns who only speak to god (but gently, gently) thumb tucked under Bea’s chin as she checks a graze on her cheekbone. Bea, transfixed by Lilith’s tight, concerned frown.
A dry, “Oh yes, how astonishing that someone might give a shit about you” from Lilith before she notes Beatrice’s stricken expression, squeezes her shoulder and makes an odd, abortive motion like she wants to brush her lips over Bea’s forehead, but thought the better of it.
Mary who won’t learn Spanish but picks this up, if not with ease then with determination, with renewed fervor when Shannon gets the halo. Looking to her ears for the telltale trickle of ruptured eardrums before dropping back to this, their shared voice.
And this, too, is how they learn to die.
Beatrice fixing the straps on Lilith’s vest, tugging them tight so the armor won’t collapse into a puncturing shape at the point of impact. Lilith letting her do it - the routine is like with a hazmat suit or a space suit. Check your own, check someone else, and let them check you.
“You look ridiculous in that hood, like a worm.”
“Thank you Lilith.” As Bea tightens the last strap, smooths it flat. Her hand lingers so Lilith takes it. Why not?
“Don’t die tonight, okay?” Lilith pauses. “I refuse to attend a vigil mass for a worm.”
Beatrice bites back on something. Lilith knows what it is, knows what she looks like, has wrestled Shannon over it and scowled at Mary - “Wow Lil, now you match your personality. A dickhead.”
All the stupid little nerd says is, “I’ll see you in the van.”
And she does, but it’s with Shannon’s blood on her hands, the divinium in her body casting little lights on the ceiling of the van, like glow-in-the-dark stars. Lilith’s eyes roaming in the rearview mirror, both hands busy on the wheel, as Shannon coughs on a mouthful of blood and switches to her hands.
They shake, fluttering out their meanings as street lights switchback in over the tense shape of Lilith’s shoulder.
“Hey,”
Beatrice wants to clutch her hands but she wants the words, too.
Her voice breaks around the response, so she mirrors, like they’re doing forms on the grass, like they’re home.
“Hey.”

AHEM
Are you tired of watching TV shows with wlw romances on Netflix and Amazon Prime and Disney Plus and so on that just keep getting canceled? Even if they did well statistically?
Did you love Warrior Nun? Willow? Paper Girls? The Wilds? The Owl House? First Kill? Etc?
Have you repeatedly had your heart broken by these massive, homophobic companies that are ruining TV?
Do you want to see a slow burn wlw relationship that was planned FROM THE BEGINNING finally culminate into something beautiful? Something earned? In a show that isn’t going to just be canceled? In a show that has more story to tell? Where we will get to see their relationship develop even further as they deal with trying to save the world together?
Then you should watch RWBY.
There are a multitude of reasons why you should watch RWBY that I’ve mentioned in other posts like this and this. But, at this particular moment with the cancel your gays trend still going strong, RWBY is a pretty safe show to gravitate toward. (I say pretty because, I mean, obvs shit can happen. But at the moment I'm confident the show is here to stay for quite some time because it's the biggest show of its production company and it's currently expanding quite a lot with other media.) It’s a bit of a haven, if you will. A balm for many of us.
Bumbleby (Blake and Yang/Black and Yellow) is THE MAIN SHIP of the show, between two of the titular ladies. Not just some side story. TWO OF THE MAIN PROTAGONISTS.
AND IT IS CANON!
A blonde and a dark haired lady! A cat girl and her useless lesbian girlfriend! The sunny golden retriever and her brooding cat girlfriend! They are literally coded (including COLOR CODED) to be together!
And there will be MORE!
Bumbleby has meant A LOT to many of us in the fandom. And it has definitely been a long time coming. Many of us weren’t sure it would ever happen. But it HAS. It was planned from the beginning and it was done BEAUTIFULLY.
Tumblr media
(For those of you who don’t know, the picture is a tweet posted by the creator of RWBY, presumably about Bumbleby, given it was posted a few days after a very poignant interaction between Blake and Yang first aired back in the early days)
In short, WATCH RWBY IF YOU’RE ALSO FUCKING TIRED OF CANCEL YOUR GAYS! BUMBLEBY IS WORTH IT!

ok I finished my rewatch here is the S1 recap brought to you by my brain juices having been put in a blender after that. I will tell you guys, rewatching S1 after watching S2 is so incredibly rewarding this show is just. really good!! it is!! now here are my various disorganized thoughts:
shannon's death scene is so much more hard-hitting on a rewatch. the way when she's being carried she asks for mary then reaches for her is so incredibly intimate she's surrounded by her sisters but she wants mary at her side and the ensuing goodbyes are very much heart-wrenching and there is NO way to read shannon/mary as not romantic especially since we later get hints from everyone that it was pretty much an open secret? everyone knew their relationship was special. props to the cast for delivering such an emotional scene that comes this early in the show (the tear falling from beatrice's face to land on shannon's as she kisses her forehead and says "I'll miss you, sister" is just. Cinéma. Filmé)
the way it is stressed time and again that resurrection is something the halo provides specifically for ava. there's also the way there's a direct parallel with areala bc they're both the only warrior nuns to have received the halo AGAINST their wills and I think you could say resurrection happened for areala too which is very interesting and very neat (the way these two bookend the cycle of warrior nun being fed into the church killing machine)
the way it is basically textual that vincent was the drunk driver that caused ava's accident and that is INSANE. they're both at the center of how the trajectory of their lives was fundamentally rewritten and they're both the cause that sets them on their path. vincent becomes her father figure and develops genuine affection for her and he fills a place in her life that has always been empty before and this really sets the scene for their S2 interactions.
on the topic of vincent there are so many scenes where he stands around in apparent deep meditation and comes afterwards with answers or a set course and those are literally the moments he gets his visions/messages from adriel and it happens right under our noses and we're none the wiser!! you only catch it on rewatch
ava's bisexuality is hinted at so early like literally the first person to hit on her and offer her a drink is a girl!! and then when she escapes the cat's cradle she says "I'm gonna make love to" pointed look at a girl "someone" like it was there right at the beginning
JC is the best person to have a first lay with! I am a person who subscribes to ship having to be each other's true loves not necessarily their first loves and JC was safe and harmless enough for ava to explore things that were denied her in her past life (sexuality, desire, infatuation) bc in the grand scheme of things JC does not matter. and ava subconsciously KNOWS this. ava is never 100% vulnerable or open with JC and not just bc of, you know, the supernatural things happening around and to her constantly but even the most basic information abt herself she withholds for a LONG time. JC is very interesting thematically bc he's what ava thinks freedom looks like and what she thinks she wants but absolutely not what she needs (which is basically what she explores all throughout S1). He's an uprooted vagrant person not beholden to anyone but his own whims but that means he never develops any significant bonds there's no purpose and no real belonging with him. Hell, he leaves his partners of 18 months for ava who he met a week ago. His entire character is based on leaving whereas ava wants, deep down, someone who will stay for and with her. all throughout.
the vincent monologue at the end of episode 1 hits different on a rewatch "prophets are hard to come by in these times" and he went and fashioned himself into one!! this whole things has been him trying to find a type of salvation that the church does not offer him!! especially since he's haunted by who he was in the past and when he joined the OCS he thought maybe this darkness is a demon that can be exorcised and confronted that it was in fact all him he wanted a miracle powerful enough to banish that very darkness. adriel probably sensed that vulnerability in him and came to him in visions using that to get him onboard
mary's whole s1 arc is basically that tough action guy whose wife gets killed and he goes on a rampage to find out who did it and why. she's a female john wick. which. again. I am puzzled by the fact that shannon and mary was apparently not written to read as romantic?? my dearest people you WROTE it that way. you tapped into the romance tropes.
lilith is somehow both an eldest daughter (derogatory) and a middle child (derogatory). and also a bitch and a delight and I love her so much
JC. repeatedly. and I say. REPEATEDLY. offers ava moments of vulnerability where he opens up abt himself and his life and ava offers NOTHING in return. ava is extremely guarded even as she wants him and only offers up her story when she has to and even then it's mostly to distract him from asking questions abt who the people after her are. and that's juxtaposed with how ava, after that very painful moment with mother superion and being offered comfort from beatrice, legitimately opens up to beatrice almost instantly there. Beatrice hugs her once and ava is like I spent 12 years not feeling anything below my chest I didn't kill myself I have a very complicated relationship with nuns and thus catholicism bc I wasn't treated well like the contrast there is mindblowing.
bringing me to my next point: ava instinctively: 1/knows beatrice is safe, 2/knows she is safe with beatrice, 3/ wants to trust beatrice SO BAD. and she wants intensely, for beatrice to believe her and (then in the back end of season once they're paired up) to believe in her
ava fleeing the OCS is done so well bc in 24hrs she gets put through mother superion's psychological warfare, then she hears abt the previous halobearer who I'm sure she was picturing as someone of a certain age then sees the picture and realizes shannon died young, then she goes visiting the murals of the cat's cradle and all the warrior nuns are pictured young and fighting demons, constantly, AND THEN she reads that part abt how areala died her second death YOUNG too. she gets hit with the reality of this fate, the danger of it, the certainty of a death that'll come sooner rather than later as she's appointed humanity's champion while having to fight horrors beyond a normal human's comprehension constantly. ofc my girl bailed. it's all done so very well everything that has to do with ava's arc is insanely well written
jillian calls beatrice "a petite member of the clergy" when she sees the footage of beatrice taking out an entire security team and that is SO FUCKING FUNNY. imagine calling beatrice petite to her face
on that topic beatrice's hallway fight gets projected to a room full of journalists and I am obsessed with that. did she go viral on the internet were there memes abt ninja nuns going feral
all throughout when something happens that pushes against the Norms and Rules beatrice will question it and it can come off as cold but really it's bc Beatrice strives on structure!! if she has to step outside the bounds of it, it better be righteous and worth it. like when she asks if vincent is intent on not giving the halo to lilith and keeping it within ava and he says yes her first reflex is but lilith is next in line. but the politics. this isn't to say beatrice was FOR killing ava like the moment she hears it could kill her she's NOT down to take it away from her but everytime the Order of Things is challenged Beatrice has to be walked through as to why. and if it's WORTH it. which oh boy the way this ties to her S2 arc makes me slightly insane bc ava comes barreling through that structure and beatrice says yes. she is worth upending my whole world for anyway-
Which is NOT to say that beatrice will take well to any kind of authority you actually have to earn her respect otherwise beatrice has. absolutely. zero chill. the tone she takes with duretti who's the fucking CARDINAL. from VATICAN. a pope HOPEFUL?? she is polite yes but curt and cold and very much flirting with impertinence like duretti tries to seduce her into his clique the way he did lilith and it fails astronomically and she basically tells him to go fuck himself?? to A CARDINAL?? DIRECT OVERSIGHT OVER THE OCS?? FROM THE VATICAN??? "you may always count on me to remain faithful. to God." and did you call him a power hungry whore too did you give him the finger beatrice???????
anyway I miss this show so fucking much

okay so i did watch all of warrior nun in like 2 days bc i have the no longer novel coronavirus and i just. am going CRAZY about the mary/shannon/lilith/beatrice dynamic. absolutely crazy. like the pink + white scene? where mary and lilith each take one of beatrice’s arms and hold her protectively, giving each other the big sister look of solidarity and understanding over her head? lilith tipping her head into beatrice’s cheek? the photograph of the three of them laughing? shannon’s death scene - telling lilith she’s ready, giving mary her medal, closing her eyes when beatrice kisses her on the forehead? the way beatrice describes shannon having loved pranking them? just. the love between all of them in every iteration.
and i just. god i have so many feelings about serious, intense, guarded beatrice - who is so YOUNG compared to the others - first coming into cat’s cradle. and mary sitting down with her at dinner, because beatrice automatically sits alone, her head bent. and the others joining. about weeks going by and them slowly warming her up - mary feels proud whenever she makes her lips twitch, lilith is delighted when beatrice starts to slowly show her sense of humor - they all love cruella de jesus so much (except for shannon, who never says anything but never uses it) not just for the lame joke, but because it was beatrice who made it, their beatrice with a proud grin - and shannon radiates affection when she manages to catch one of them with a good prank and beatrice laughs.
beatrice becoming someone who they come to trust not only to keep a level head and a brilliant, tactical mind, but also to love them - and they see the twisting jagged inwardness of her pain, and mary and shannon make knowing, grim eye contact, lilith - who was in so much of the same pressure cooker of perfection except instead of desperately throwing herself into being useful and having value she has turned to becoming the best, becoming ready, she has things to live up to instead of live down - squeezes her hand - but with them beatrice does not let that pain stop her from caring, loving. they are the easiest part of her vows to keep.
and mary and shannon, and mary and lilith - to see those you love changed by something of another world entirely, pulling them away from you, making them less human - and they keep giving their lives for others, fucking self sacrificial idiots, except you’re all cut from the same cloth, aren’t you? not technically, because you’re not of the cloth, not like them - but you’re alike in that way, all of you are, and it’s such a fucking glorified tragedy that you want to burn the catholic church down for it.
(side note it drives me crazy that they all know exactly which parts of each other to cut into, to make hurt - lilith telling mary she’s not really one of them, that she doesn’t belong, that she only cares about herself; mary telling lilith that all she cares about is her legacy; mary telling beatrice that she cares more about the church than her sisters; probably more that i can’t remember but it’s because they know and love each other so well that they can have this much incisive fury - “she’s my sister, of course i hate her”)
and then camila coming in, the new youngest - and now it’s beatrice’s turn to be the big sister, to camila who has been through so much and still reacts to gentleness like a flower to the sun. and camila comes in at such a hard time, because shannon is retreating, hardening, and it is putting everyone on edge. but camila is a joy and beatrice loves her too, and the rest of them get to see her growth with pride, so much pride.
anyway. my KINGDOM for a world where toya turner got to be in season 2.

2023 Favourites
In no particular order. This is content I've read and watched in 2023, not necessarily content released in 2023.
Books
1. Notorious Sorcerer by Davinia Evans: fantasy with some m/m. The protagonist travels to other planes for alchemical ingredients and ends up having to learn greater workings. I love the Byzantine vibe of the worldbuilding.
2. The Daughters of Izdihar by Hadeer Elsbai: fantasy with some f/f. Two women, a waterweaver and an earthweaver, join a women's rights movement. I love the Egyptian-inspired worldbuilding.
3. Reforged by Seth Haddon: m/m fantasy. This King/Paladin novel has a surprising plot. The magic system is very original as well, I especially like the music part of it.
4. The Buried and the Bound by Rochelle Hassan: urban fantasy with some m/m (YA). The hedgewitch protecting the town teams up with a boy cursed to forget his true love and another one trapped as a bondservant.
5. [Spanish] Lazos de Sangre by LR Jeffers: m/m urban fantasy (erotica). This is a series about werewolves and big cat shifters, usually angsty and hot.
6. [French] Meute by Karine Rennberg: urban fantasy with some m/m + another protagonist is aroace and uses sign language. This is a novel about building your own werewolf pack. I think this is my first time encountering 2nd-person narration in French and it works surprisingly well.
7. Cascade by Rachel A. Rosen: science fantasy with mlm and wlw protagonists + no romance. An ecological disaster has freed magic. In Canada, the Party works with a wizard in order to try and save humanity. I love the intricacies of the plot, which skilfully mixes politics, science and magic.
8. Ocean's Echo by Everina Maxwell: m/m science fiction. Telepathy, my favourite trope, done by one of my fave authors! It was even better than I expected.
9. The Deep Sky by Yume Kitasei: science fiction/murder mystery with several non-binary major characters. 80 people from all around the world embark on a one-way interstellar voyage. As they're all required to get pregnant, they're obviously afab, but several are non-binary, with mentions of a trans man.
10. Forget Me Not by Alyson Derrick: f/f romance (YA). This is a very romantic novel about two girls dating in secret until one gets amnesia. I enjoy this trope a lot.
TV shows
1. Good Omens: fantasy with queer protagonists + some f/f. I love the book and I love the adaptation. Season 2 is original content, but it's faithful to the spirit of the novel.
2. Shadow and Bone: fantasy with some m/m (YA). This successfully mixes the Shadow and Bone trilogy (that I haven't read) and the Six of Crows duology (that I have read and enjoyed).
3. Warrior Nun: fantasy with some f/f. Nuns literally fight against demons.
4. The Power: superpower fiction with some f/f + a trans woman and an intersex man. Teenage girls start developing an electrical superpower, which makes them safer from men.
5. Nü Er Hong: GL wuxia. This c-drama is a quick watch, with 27 episodes of 2 minutes. I love that these short webdramas always have more or less the same actresses.
6. The Devil Judge: dystopia/thriller with BL vibes. This k-drama has a tight plot and fascinating characters. There's a girl in a wheelchair and the rep is well done.
7. Naughty Babe: BL romance/murder (attempt) mystery. This Thai drama is the sequel to Cutie Pie, except that they switched up the main pairing and the secondary pairing. I think it's possible to watch it on its own.
8. Wedding Plan: BL + GL romcom. This Thai drama has mlm-wlw solidarity, which I hope to see more of in the future. There are also cameos from the BL couples from Love in the Air.
9. Oh! My Assistant: BL romcom. This hilarious k-drama is about a het porn webtoon creator and his assistant. Despite this topic, the drama is not explicit.
10. Welcome to the Lesbian Bar: GL contemporary fiction. This k-drama is a quick watch, with 5 episodes of 6 minutes. In each episode, 2 customers come have a drink and chat with the owner.
Movies
1. Barbie: fantasy that is so gender! This was such a big surprise coming from Hollywood.
2. Nimona: fantasy with a protagonist who is a trans/enby allegory + some m/m (YA). I haven't read the graphic novel, so this was more depressing than I expected (it deals a lot with discrimination), but still an excellent movie.
3. Wingwomen (Voleuses in the original French): action movie with a sapphic protagonist + f/f vibes between the other two. I love heist movies all about women.
4. Kill Bok-soon: action movie with some f/f. This Korean movie has interesting cinematography. Note that it's very violent, though.
5. Red, White & Royal Blue: m/m romcom. I love the book and I love the adaptation.
6. Anything's Possible: m/f romance with a trans female protagonist (YA). This is a very positive movie, about love, art and nature.
7. Fanfic: m/m romance with a trans male protagonist (YA). This Polish movie is sometimes dark, sometimes fun.

jt (finally) watches warrior nun - s2 e1 (pt 2)
(Btw, thanks for the replies on the first post! Really fun to talk about this stuff with folks!)
Alright, so from the first post, the things I wanted to talk about in that first avatrice scene were: 1) how tense Beatrice is, 2) conversely, how easily she bends to Ava, and 3) that was not the first time Ava has kissed Beatrice.
I talked a bit about the emotional tension that Beatrice was carrying in the last post, so let’s talk about the physical tension - which also leads into the 2nd point about how she bends to Ava (and also the cheek kiss lol)
First, can we give KTY all the accolades for her choices in this scene? We get so much from Beatrice in just over a minute of screen time:
snippiness
a lecture (which is the closest we get to s1 Bea but it’s wrapped in something like a plea that makes it feel different)
the quick improvisation that reminds you of what she’s capable of (i.e. not just able to kill a man but also to make herself invisible if she needs to)
suspicion (which, now that I think about it, is kinda reminiscent of her calling out Lilith outside of Arq-tech in s1 e4
pride (which I absolutely love and will talk about more below)
her softness at the mention of Mary
and of course, the most perfect impersonation of a computer restart lol
I mean, look at all that! So sososo much in one minute! Geez. All the awards to KTY.
Anyway, Bea’s hella tense in this scene and, as mentioned in the replies of the first post, it makes a lot of sense considering how out in the open they are here. I get this feeling that without the structure (and scripture) of the OCS, Bea has this need to double down on holding herself in (and running from her own feelings). And she’s trying so hard here. She keeps defaulting to that strictness, what with the mini-lecture and the suspicion, but she can never hold on to it for very long, can she? Because Ava’s right there to make her bend.
Two moments in particular: First, the “exceptionally well-organized” line (0:59 in this vid), look at how her posture changes.
Tumblr media
I love how Beatrice straightens here, almost as if she’s standing for judgement - and expecting praise. Which she probably received when she was back at Cat’s Cradle. But they’re not at Cat’s Cradle now, and what she receives instead - at least what she seems to take it as - is admonishment. I mean, look at her reaction:
Tumblr media
She ducks her head as if chastised, even gives Ava a nod like a sullen child. But I don’t think Ava quite meant it as a critique, yknow? There’s a fondness in her voice, in her smile, teasing even - and of course, the gentle reminder (1:08), “You don’t have to be so perfect all the time,” where KTY again gets all the awards for how she puts so much in how Beatrice hesitates in looking back up at Ava, that almost stuttered breath she takes in when she does. Goddamn, KTY, such a great performance, showing just how deeply Ava has gotten under Beatrice’s skin.
The second moment where Beatrice bends to Ava, not as evident as the above but it’s still there, is in response to Ava’s “Yes, mother.” Which, huh, I guess Ava realized the best way to get Beatrice to bend is to tease her lol
Tumblr media
Beatrice ducks her head just for a moment and yknow, I wonder if that’s what tipped Ava over the edge - it is kind of adorable, the way Bea just accepts the teasing. But also it’s like, here Beatrice is with the girl she loves (as mentioned in the replies to that first post, my thought is that Beatrice is well aware of her feelings by now) and idk, I get the feeling that she doesn’t necessarily want to be so strict - this is Ava, who wants to live and chat up customers and swim and run and do all the things. But Beatrice’s mission is to train Ava so she wins, so she stays alive, so if Bea has to endure some teasing, so be it.
And that leads into that third and last point: I really think that this wasn’t the first time Ava’s surprised Beatrice with a kiss. I mean, look (1:26) how Ava doesn’t hesitate in leaning in, doesn’t even think about it afterward, doesn’t say anything about Beatrice’s wide-eyed, frozen expression. Just skips away without a care in the world.
And Beatrice, for all her shock, recovers well - too well, I think. She just kinda … accepts it. If this was the first time, my thought would be that she’d go into some kind of panic or guilt mode, yknow?
But she doesn’t here - sure she needs a second, but then she blinks, remembers to breathe, straightens to her usual posture. And again, awards to KTY because there’s so much in that look she has at the end:
Tumblr media
It’s almost like resignation - perhaps this thought that that’s all things will ever amount to be between them, yknow? That it won’t go further; they can’t.
Okay as usual, I have written more than I thought I would lol. I’m going to try to get through the rest the episode this weekend but don’t be surprised if I don’t. Lmk what y’all think!

kitchen kisses and warrior wishes (one shot)
note: i just stumbled upon warrior nun, and after hearing the cancellation news and diving into some emotional fics, i needed a quick fix of them being total domestic gfs! :) ao3 link
The sun had dipped below the horizon, casting the old stone walls of Cat's Cradle in a warm, golden glow. In the kitchen, Ava leaned against the counter, her chin resting on her folded arms. She watched Beatrice with a fond smile, captivated by the taller woman's graceful movements as she prepared a pot of simmering soup, the aroma of herbs and vegetables filling the air.
Beatrice glanced over at Ava, the corners of her lips curling up in a small smile. "Is there something on your mind?" she asked, her elegant British accent adding to her charm, a hint of amusement in her voice.
Ava straightened up and walked over to her, wrapping her arms around Beatrice from behind. "Just thinking about how lucky I am," she whispered, resting her head on Beatrice's shoulder. "You can slay demons and cook an amazing soup. It's everything I could wish for."
Beatrice turned off the stove and set the pot aside. She turned in Ava's arms, her expression softening. "I'm the lucky one, Ava," she replied with affection in her voice. "Because I have you right here with me, and you're more than I could ever wish for."
Ava leaned in, capturing Beatrice's lips in a tender kiss. They held each other close, the warmth of the kitchen and the love between them filling the room. In that moment, they were not warriors, but simply two people who found solace and love in each other's company.
As the evening settled in, Ava and Beatrice enjoyed their meal, sharing stories and laughter. The outside world, with its challenges and battles, felt far away. In their own little corner of the hidden church, they found a sense of peace and a love that was both fierce and tender.
Cat's Cradle had seen centuries of history, but in the quiet moments, Ava and Beatrice discovered their own sanctuary, a place where their hearts could truly be at home.

a trust fall through ash and blood
the hitman au
warning for: some graphic depictions of violence. nothing too bad this chapter but it will get more graphic as time goes on
chapter 1
read on ao3
"Your handler is waiting, Agent."
"Not exactly in the business of giving a shit, Mother." Lilith breathes deeply. She opens her eyes slowly, looking towards the ground.
She sees the shoes first, garish pink converse. Who the fuck wears canvas shoes to their first day of work at a goddamn assassin agency?
Lilith looks up to see a woman, probably a little younger than herself, with short curly hair and an easygoing smile. The woman reaches out a hand to shake, slowly, because obviously she’s read Lilith’s file too.
“I’m Camila, and it seems we work well together!” she says with a grin.
“If we are to continue working well together, could you do one thing for me, Camila?”
Camila’s head cocks to the side, but turns the ignored outstretched hand into a gesture for Lilith to continue.
“Don’t try to be my friend. We are coworkers. I am putting my life in your hands, I don’t care what you watched on tv last night or if you have a cat or that your brother just got married or whatever. I don't care.” Lilith says blandly.
Camila’s smile twitches for just a moment before it’s back, blinding as it was moments ago. “Understood, Agent.”

“Okay, but I can't promise anything.”
Oh fuck, okay…oh-fucking-kay.
Ava smiles and nods, because she’s very good at smiling and nodding even when she’s losing her shit and Beatrice agreeing to give her a lap dance is absolutely a shit losing moment.
They make their way through the club, this one far different than her own. With more open space and fewer tables. There’s no real stage, as much as each booth has its own personal stage.
It’s also a lot bigger than the Cradle and Cat’s Cradle is huge. This one has a second VIP section upstairs which is where Josephine (who Ava adores) took them. It’s more like the back rooms of the Cradle than the rest of the place. Dark, neon lighting, a vibe of music you can't really hear but can feel rattling through the floors beneath you.
They pass by a series of booths where people are getting private dances. Somewhere in there is Josephine Dalton, one of the richest and most attractive women in the world, getting a lap dance a few days before her wedding while sipping on expensive tequila.
Once they reach their own booth, empty and waiting, Ava looks back at Bea again. “You sure you’re up for this?”
To her surprise, Beatrice nods. “I - I want to try, I think. I’m quite drunk.”
Ava snorts, she’s a bit drunk too. “Okay, you…okay.” Stop saying okay. “I’ll go sit down then!” Ava races in first and practically leaps onto the cushiony little couch tucked into the corner. These booths are smaller, but there are a lot more. The tighter space means that the dancer wouldn't have much room to move around - but they would be close enough that everything would be easier to see.
Once seated, she watches Beatrice come in and latch the door shut behind her. She faces it for a moment, taking a breath, then looks at Ava over her shoulder. “Any advice?”
Ava swallows the lump in her throat, surprised at how she can be so nervous in a place that is so familiar to her. “Don’t overthink it, at the end of the day the hot girl is what matters most. Just remember what I told you - you’re sexy as fuck, Beatrice.”

Soooo... what are your thoughts on a split in the OCS after the events of Season 1? I mean, Ava wasn't super popular in the OCS/those in-the-know since she was "the one who ran away", and Beatrice and Cam essentially went rogue when they helped her escape Crimson at the Cat's Cradle. So why would anyone believe her telling them that Adriel and his story were all a lie, when he himself is there claiming to be an Angel, returned to save humanity? (it's not like they can see the wraith demons at his command)
Duretti (if he doesn't bury his head in the ground) and Superion can support Ava's claims, but it's still the word of a non-believer against the guy centuries worth of their teachings claim is an angel.
It would also make the massacre of the OCS members even more devastating if their numbers had already been whittled down due to divided loyalties, only to have those who remained loyal to the Warrior Nun be slaughtered by double agents who truly believed in Adriel.
(also, felt it was kinda weird when pretty much all the uniformed FBC people were dudes)
(furthermore thinking on how much would've been added if Lilith's family sided with Adriel, and how much that would have influenced her decisions)
god this is so intriguing. when you think about it… the whole Lore of the ocs is based on the angel Adriel giving up his halo to save a dying human woman. if he wants it back… well, who are they to deny him? and thinking on the temptation to have it be over. most of the ocs have watched their friends die, their sisters thrown at the problem of evil until they’re no longer useful cannon-fodder.
god’s angel appears and tells you to put down your sword… damn, maybe that’s what you do.
on the other hand i feel like… probably out of everyone on the planet it’s the ocs sisters who’d have reason to side-eye adriel the hardest. sure, ava’s an unknown, but mother superion? mary? beatrice the golden child of the ocs? of course looking at it a different way what you have is a disgraced ex-halo-bearer, a usurping non-believer, and beatrice who was sent away by duretti & refused to go. sure, duretti is the pope, but individual orders obey the vatican in theory, but in practice things are more complex. and for the ocs, who have always acted as a shadow organisation, the ability to… well… disregard vatican oversight is probably a baked-in thing.
i feel like the split would be extreme. those who want to believe in adriel vs those who are dedicated to the mission: to keep hell the fuck off of earth, keep people safe from the influence of demons.
there’s good reason to be skeptical of adriel’s claims. he was buried under the vatican, the latin on the wall said ‘please don’t touch this ever. let what’s dead rest’ etc etc. seemed like just a thing you might put on a tomb, but the whole 'live specimen inside' thing might give pause. either we believe that st peter gives what the vatican decides legitimacy or we trust an angel as the unilateral word of god. the bible says maybe don’t do that.
ESPECIALLY if they saw footage of Adriel infecting a whole courtyard of bystanders with demons, i think most of the ocs would trust in what duretti & superion told them. god can speak from the mouth of a heretic (ava), and there’s plenty of ammunition in catholic theology for fallen angels/ agents of the devil/ the devil usually comes in disguise.
they know that Bad Shit is leaking in from some hellscape (most of them likely assume it’s captial-letter Hell) and now the long-lost author of their order appears and attacks (apparently kills) mary in broad daylight? they might be devout but they’re also in the know in a way that few people are, and i think the ocs by its nature is insular. i think mostly these girls come for the service to god & stay for each other, die for each other.
a schism is certainly possible (ahem, not unprecedented in christianity) but i think the ocs sisters trust each other. i think the way that mary died might move them. vincent’s betrayal too. does that look like the work of god? again, immense skepticism over any person claiming to be a mouthpiece for god.
BUT i see you about the idea that literally a handful of traitors would be enough. and that feels so plausible as to be almost guaranteed. sisters tired of fighting a battle of attrition with their bodies, ppl like crimson, the ones who just want it to be over. we really only learn that the ocs was compromised (and i’m inclined to think not by vincent because damn guys u would have done the smart thing & called bust on every safe-house vincent knew about, right??)
the idea that the way the ocs tosses spent sisters aside leads to its near-annihilation is… compelling.
& 🫠 lilith’s family turning on the ocs. i mean, they’d be hand-in-hand with lilith there, no? she sides with adriel. really & truly she IS our example of a girl who is all but tossed aside when she’s not useful. lost, alone, feeling monstrous, she turns to adriel because he can bear to look at her.
you’re so right that there’s so much to be said for the ocs as an organisation that literally chews up & spits out its soldiers. it’s a war machine & so despite superion & shannon & mary trying so hard to make it human and caring and good - i mean, the institution is… well… an Institution. it doesn’t have a heart.
& i think that’s what ava brings to it, what she shows them. that
1. you have to try to stop the cycle of violence. you have to at least try.
and 2. making an army out of lost girls is dangerous. like bea, they’ll throw themselves at danger; like lilith, they’ll throw themselves at death.
just… thinking of shannon & her ghost. how angry she is at the whole circus. of mary & her quiet sadness, so long in the making that her sorrow feels worn even when it’s new.
thinking of ava as a thesis in how you really fight back the darkness
by being the light
