Wonderland & Underland
ok it’s been a long while since I've done one of these so forgive me if I’m a bit rusty. But that’s all unimportant.
Let’s get this started shall we?

Some background:
Wonderland is a country on Fairyland, a planet in another solar system in another dimension accessible by most any manner of portal.
Fairyland is a pretty silly name for it, its original name is Alfheim and it has been home to the majority of fae kind for millennia
Fairyland/Alfheim was founded by the First Fae, the literal first faeries ever born.
The First Fae were descended from literal stars, void, stone and raw wild magic floating around out in space
They found Fairyland when it was just a barren planetoid with no star to orbit and terraformed it with magic, afterwards they stole some other planets to form a solar system, made their own star and boom called it home
Fairyland was eventually overrun by True Royals, the offspring of Elder Gods and Fae.
It was rough and sent a lot of First Fae into hiding, before they could be hunted down and murdered
Jack, Alice, and the Red Queen are all related. Alice is Jack’s grandmother on his mom’s side and the Red Queen is Jack’s great-grandmother on his father’s side (it’s complicated, time fuckery happened at one point)

ok so, the history of wonderland:
wonderland was “founded” (read: stolen from the First Fae) by an Elder God by the name of the Lifeblood
The lifeblood is the goddess of carnal desires (lust/love/sex), blood, (re)birth, hearts, fertility, and chaos
she founded wonderland but immediately gave it up to her 4 true royal children as a gift
Dusk (eldest, Queen of Spades), Clover (second eldest, prince of clubs), Shard (third oldest, prince of diamonds), and Diamour (Youngest, Queen of hearts)
All but the queen of spades previously held the title prince(ss)
Each had their particular peculiar “collection”
Hearts collected cores (the metaphysical “heart” of one’s soul where emotions are kept), dyed her clothing in the blood of her enemies, made a show of her brutality by beheading people in public
Clubs was almost gentle, loved pets of all kinds (even sapient ones) and had a vast menagerie, he fed those that displeased him to his creatures
Diamonds was a creature of greed and excess, everything he owned was gilded and golden, if it was expensive and strange he wanted it but quickly grew bored with his new playthings, he had the bodies of his enemies dipped in molten gold while they were still living and kept them as statues in his gardens
Spades... Spades was vitriol and death wrapped in calm smiles and offerings of tea. Cool and calculating, she studied combat, war, the arts, medicine and necromancy alongside her "womanly duties". She took a husband young and let him think he ran the show, she killed him a dozen times over until there was nothing left but screeching essence
wonderland was prosperous for awhile until Princess Diamour learned just how small a fourth was and decided that she wanted the whole country and killed her siblings one by one
Presumably she was under the control of the Wyrm Tyrant, an ancient Dracolich that wanted/still wants to take over the world and isn’t above commiting and number of atrocities to do it (it’s “dead” now, more accurately it’s a disembodied consciousness under heavy guard locked away in Hel but it still has reach and influence but that’s another post in itself)
After disposing of her siblings, Diamour crowned herself Queen and reshaped the country in her image and anyone who dared oppose her was beheaded in public as an example
Everyone else in the country was subject to Diamour’s Charm, an ability found in most True Royals to manipulate the emotions of their victims, after all it’s hard to commit regicide if you love your Queen so much you’d die for her
Overuse of Charm can cause withdrawal symptoms, or even brain damage
Wonderland was widely considered place of "madness" which could both be attributed to Queen Diamour overusing her Charm and the flagrant shows of decadence and sexuality that might have startled any human visitors
The Bloody Queen of Hearts was eventually usurped by a young Witch named Alice and a band of freedom fighters
The country was ravaged by war, and then ravaged by the Lifeblood who turned it into a wasteland after Diamour was presumed dead
Diamour was not dead, just locked away with other Royals in a complex prison-lock to protect the Looking Glass
The Looking Glass was a relic, an item made from the body parts of an elder god or true royal, that could peer through time and space and thus gave Diamour (and previously Dusk) a huge military advantage over her neighbors. As if having a monopoly on agriculture wasn't enough.
The present-ish:
Jack eventually opened the prison lock, killing the trapped royals and destroying the Looking Glass (there was a whole event about it awhile back that I need to go find and like… tag or something)
Diamour escaped and hid herself inside his body, gathering her strength and biding her time, eventually turning his heart into a soulstone crystal and enchanting it to be her phylactery
She later made herself a body using his blood (this was also a Big Thing that i actually DID tag, you can read it HERE)
After getting her ass handed to her by Jack several times she slunk away to some unknown region and really hasn’t been seen until recently
Since opening the prison-lock jack has been carefully rebuilding wonderland from the ground up and ruling it as Prince Regent
Diamour, now “affectionately” nicknamed Queenie, has built her own kingdom in the abandoned catacombs and buried First Fae castles far below wonderland
Ok now that i have you all up to speed, lemme get down to the real nitty-gritty
Wonderland NOW:
Obligatory Pinterest board so you can understand the aesthetic better
Now that it’s under jack’s control it’s a lot softer than it used to be
Surrounded by a giant living wall made of magical metal and thorns
Populated almost solely by test subjects jack saved from delta facility, some Andrids and a few other people that decided that they wanted to live there
More technologically advanced than it was in the past, earthly cars have been converted to run on liquid magic instead of gas, there are condensers that suck ambient magic out of the air and turn it into a more usable liquid form
The architecture is more or less the same it was when Diamour ruled, very one with nature, hard to spot from the air unless you know what you’re looking for.
Houses built into trees/mushrooms or underground as burrows
Lots and lots of plants, GIANT plants, thanks to the volcanic ash and old magic in the soil even the most mundane plants get MASSIVE if planted in wonderland
Oh yeah wonderland sits on top of a mostly dormant-ish volcano, there are hotsprings scattered all over the place and the beaches have black sand but it hasn’t erupted in millennia so it’s fine… probably
The crater left over from the last time the volcano erupted is now an inland sea of considerable size that provides seafood and salt to the rest of wonderland
Has the potential to be an agricultural powerhouse if jack can ever get the hang of food production on such a massive scale
There’s a railway but it’s in serious need of repair and renovation
Jack promotes the worship of the Lifeblood since she IS a fertility goddess and doesn’t really ask much besides a few (animal) sacrifices in her name
Wonderland’s main exports are: tea, flowers, tobacco products, hemp, mushrooms, sea food, sea salt, silk, wool, honey, milk, fruits, vegetables, and a few exclusive things like jubjub bird eggs, tulgey wood, tulgey seed oil, and raw magical energy
Underland:

Created by diamour after she realized that it’d be way too much trouble to fight jack for control of wonderland
Effectively “wonderland 2” as far as Diamour is concerned
Located below wonderland the abandoned catacombs, caverns, lava tubes and buried First Fae castles literally under the land
Diamour no longer uses her Charm to help her rule, and has stopped brutally murdering people that disagree with her (for now)
It is unknown if she has turned over a new leaf or if she's just biding her time
Surrounded by old mines and mineshafts that allow eerily complete access to much of the surface, allowing Diamour and her followers to bounce around wonderland totally unseen
Populated by any number of folks descended from the original wonderlandians, succubi/incubi, goblins,vampires, and just anyone who’s looking for a good time
A giant, near-constant bacchanal (her mom is the goddess of carnal desires after all)
A lot of their tech is goblin in nature, specifically earthborn goblins that know how to keep up with things. That is to say, kingdom-wide Wifi babes.
Architecture is a little showy, most structures are carved from the surrounding stone and accented with metals and gems of varying worth. Sure paint is cheaper but the gems and metal shine in whatever light is present and make a bigger statement
A lot of buildings are built into stalagmites or stalactites, the ones that aren't are cobbled together from loose stones, built into the mineshafts, or hang from the cave roof on chains to safe floor-space
Any plants down here are either some sort of fungus/moss/mold, or are magically modified to grow underground which is difficult and time consuming
It’s all very whimsical, lots of plants and fungi have biolume and are often used as living streetlights
In terms of weather, the cave system allows enough condensation for fog and occasionally rain but not much else. It’s cold, wet and dark.
Worship of the Lifeblood is alive and well, with orgies and sacrifices being held in her name on an almost daily basis
The first wonderland was thought mad for its shows of sexuality and decadence but underland makes that look like an absolute joke
There are feasts, orgies, literal fountains of booze, parades, drugs and other parties at varying levels of debauchery being held every day
Despite all of this, underland is very dependent on trade and tourism
Underland’s main exports are: alcohol, spider silk, elysium (a potent, highly addictive faeire drug, sometimes called “the saffron of narcotics”), precious metals and gems

Stuff I’ve been reading in 2017
The third annual reading list! (Here’s 2015 in two parts, and 2016.) School was killing my love of reading but I refused to let it. And so here we are, three years and 280 books later.
I’ve taken the liberty of bolding my favourite reads this year, and including some background about how I came to read what I did. Here we go:
I pseudo-resolved to read slower this year, and savour books that need time to seep in. Longer books tend to fit that profile for me, so I went and read the longest book in my home library.
1. War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy, translated from the Russian by Rosemary Edmonds (reflections here)
Don’t know how I zeroed in on this gem in a Kinokuniya bookstore, but I love it and you should definitely read it. Go. Go now. I was two years slow on the uptake for Pulley’s debut, but when her second novel came out this year, I literally ordered it online in 0.0002 seconds. It’s number 51 on this list.
2. The Watchmaker of Filigree Street by Natasha Pulley
I can’t summarise how I feel about this next one. It just gets to me. After reading it, I went on to watch the film as well as its 20-years-later sequel. I might read some more by Welsh, but gosh the Scottish accent is hard to decipher.
3. Trainspotting by Irvine Welsh
Perfect for bringing along on my first semester studying overseas.
4. Hector and the Search for Happiness by François Lelord
And then the school texts start! As does leisure/procrastination reading: all the Neruda and Sexton poetry, plus Dostoevsky. Only novels, novellas, plays, and anthologies are listed here; this semester I studied many isolated short stories and poems. Books I read twice are the ones I happened to write essays on – it doesn’t necessarily mean I liked them a lot. (In fact, if I really like a book, sometimes I deliberately avoid writing about it, because analysing something too much can ruin it.) I read all the poetry aloud, because poetry, but I worry also in part because the silence in my room was getting oppressively lonely.

The school year concluded, while still in Australia I read books I’d been given or chose on whims. I bought number 65 in Cairns Airport because I had nothing to read for the rest of a five-day trip; I’d started and finished number 63 during my domestic flight on day one. Clearly I’d underestimated how much I still wanted to read, having overloaded during the semester.

64. The Arrival by Shaun Tan (no words, only illustrations; please, please experience it for yourself)
65. And the Ass Saw the Angel by Nick Cave (it’s a Bible reference; think Southern Gothic)
Back home once more, I had access to my personal library, as well our national libraries! Although I’d embarked on a big crochet project as a Christmas present for some close family friends, I went pretty hard in the rest of my free time, which was abundant, because unemployment.
Some of these books just caught my eye on the shelf. Some have been on my To Read list for ages, because of friends’ recommendations (76 and 77, for instance) or because I figured I needed to see what the hype was all about (81 through 83, and 85 through 87). On the subject of YA fiction: no offence if you’re a fan of the genre, or indeed of these two series in particular, but to me it tends to feel like the literary equivalent of empty calories — easy reading that makes for a change of pace from books like 79, or 76. I read each trilogy in a day. Also, yes I realise I’m very late to the party; I haven’t watched the movies, either. Heh.

An annotated playlist for the real Percival Graves, and everything he went through when Grindelwald stole his life.
A brief introduction: This is a list of songs that detail my vague thoughts on what might have happened to MACUSA’s Director of Magical Security. Every song has its place, and there were a few that didn’t fit with the flow but still take my mind directly to Graves. Those will be listed at the bottom. As for the playlist itself, you can find it on 8tracks here, but because of the 1 hour listening limit I thought it more helpful to provide links and descriptions in this post. I’ll warn you now, it’s a fairly long one. Please enjoy, and feel free to comment with your thoughts or other songs!

MACUSA stumbles upon a lead for the first time in months. Picquery sends her best, and her best is Percival Graves. He gathers his finest aurors and the hunt is on.

With Graves locked away, Grindelwald quietly slips into place. The wizarding world has hidden for long enough.
Grave Digger - Blues Saraceno
He doesn’t want to die here. He prays he won’t die here. Prays he won’t leave this world without one more glimpse of something other than concrete walls and iron bars.
Soldier On - Temper Trap
He is surviving. Defiance has faded into exhaustion, exhaustion into emptiness. He is surviving, and that is all he can do.

Graves has to wonder if they’re looking for him, if they even know he’s gone. It’s not until Grindelwald stops coming that he has a shred of hope that maybe they’ve caught on. Less comforting is the realization that he doesn’t have it in him to last much longer.
All the King’s Horses - Karmina
The man they find is shattered, but they think there might be enough left to save Percival Graves if only they can put the pieces together again. They are his aurors, and they will stop at nothing to save him.
Hurts Like Hell - Fleurie
It’s not until he wakes up in the recover ward that Graves really has a chance to process it all. Despite whatever stoic exterior he maintained, the director had always cared more than was probably healthy for his position. How many aurors had been lost because of him? Brave men and women following the orders of a man they trusted? He has no doubt they’d be ashamed to see him now.

It’s not his face in the mirror. Or maybe it is, but it has already belonged to another.
Afraid - The Neighborhood
He figured it might get better after he was discharged from the hospital. Figured being home might change things. In some ways it does, but the fear of being replaced Isn’t so easy to banish.

They visit him while he’s recovering, or they try to. Most of them are weighed down by guilt, he can tell. Others don’t know what to say. But there are a few of his closest (like Tina, always Tina) who refuse his willingness to give up on the world.

Graves finally returns to his position at MACUSA. Is he so different that the others no longer recognize him, or is it his aurors who have changed and left him behind? He wants to tell them that something has changed, that he doesn’t think he fits in with them the way he used to, but he knows what they would say. It’s okay to feel that way. It will take time. I understand. They don’t. Better to say nothing at all.

Graves is exceptional at masking his uncertainty. Half of the auror department thinks he's back to normal and the other half assumes that any of the minor changes in him are a result of his captivity. None of them guess that he questions himself at every turn. He should have fought harder. He should have been stronger. He should have died before he let Grindelwald take him. Is that what they think when they look at him, or is it all the whispers of his own traitorous mind?

Who I Am Hates Who I’ve Been - Relient K
They keep telling him it’s not his fault, and logically some part of him knows they’re right. Doesn’t mean it’s easy to forgive himself. Doesn’t mean he has nothing to apologize for. But one way or another he is going to forgive himself, and he is going to make those apologies, and he's going to take back his life if only to spite the bastard who tried to steal it from him.
Everything’s Not Lost - Coldplay
It still hurts, what happened to him. He still feels broken inside and he’s still angry. But he’s less hurt, and less broken, and less angry. Queenie Goldstein brings him a coffee every morning. His aurors offer the usual respectful nod when they pass him by (it turns out they never once thought less of him for what he suffered). Abernathy still straightens up and gets flustered when he walks into the wand permit office, and Seraphina Picquery rants to him about the uselessness of politicians after a particularly difficult meeting. Despite everything that’s happened, remarkably little has changed, and Graves finds that the wounds are starting to heal over.
Hero - Ruelle
Grindelwald escapes custody. Graves feels like he’s suffocating, but the turmoil in his head calms when he realizes it’s him they’re all looking to. After everything, his aurors still trust in him. He will not let them down.
My Story - Leet Mob
He’s done this before; assembling a team, choosing his best. The last time around good men and women had lost their lives, but this is going to be different. Graves is ready for a hunt, and he hasn’t felt this alive since the night he was captured.
Out of the Black - Royal Blood
The aurors have never seen him this focused. He’s always been unwavering when he catches a trail, but this is different. This is vengeful. This is bloodthirsty. Somehow they can't blame him, and when they finally find Grindelwald none of them dare to step in his path.
This is Gonna Hurt - Sixx A.M.
It’s the dark wizard who underestimates his opponent this time. Surely a man he’d so thoroughly broken wasn’t nearly strong enough to face him again. That assumption fades fairly quickly, but it’s not enough to regain his standing. Graves throws curse after wordless curse at him, pressing forward relentlessly. He has Grindelwald right where he needs him. It would be so easy, just two little words to end it all. A flash of green light, and he could take everything from the man who nearly took everything from him. Percival Graves raises his wand.
Glitter and Gold - Barns Courtney
Something changed in Graves after his second duel with Grindelwald. It was as though he had reclaimed a piece of himself; the bold glint returned to his eyes, the air of raw power back in his stride. His voice took on the commanding strength it had always possessed before. His aurors begin to think that maybe, just maybe, he’s going to be okay.
Trouble - Avicii
He would not pretend it hadn’t happened, and he would not try to hide his scars. The scars only proved that he’d gotten back up after being beaten down. He’d seen things that haunted his mind and he’d been dragged to hell and back, but he had enough in this world to remind him that there was good alongside the evil. He had enough reason to keep pressing forward. He was a Graves, after all, and a Graves is not so easy to break.

An angry, unapologetic, somewhat defiant song about Graves accepting what he is, though anyone else would tell him none of it is his fault.
All We Are - One Republic
The aurors’ apology and promise to Graves. Lord knows I failed you time and again and We won’t break, we won’t die, it’s just a moment of change.
Fireproof - Coleman Hell
An upbeat celebration of Graves’ newfound invincibility, however fragile it might be.
