chapter 6
warnings: swearing, loki's scars, convention chaos
I wandered the convention hall, relearning my way around while trying to avoid Malcolm's table. I nervously picked at my shirt sleeve, glancing over every so often to try to see how it was going. Loki would look over Malcolm to catch me staring every so often. Malcolm would catch him and make him focus again. I had to stifle my laugh as Malcolm waved me back over.
“everything ok?” I asked, looking between the two. Loki nodded and Malcolm put his hand on my arm.
“Yeah. Everything is alright.” He confirmed. “Now what’s my schedule looking like?” I smiled at him and pulled the piece of paper out of my back pocket.
“I’m just giving you today because you know tomorrow will change.” I gave Malcolm a pointed look. “Panel at three. I’ll take you over there for that. And a photo op at five. Security will take care of that.” Malcolm nodded and looped his arm through mine.
“and convention opens in an hour.” I nodded. “Perfect. Loki here can start taking money and whatnot when the VIPs come in while you and I go say hello to our friends.” I looked towards the door and saw some of the usuals coming through to set up.
“sounds like a plan.” I smiled at Malcolm. Turning towards Loki, I opened my mouth to ask if he’d be ok.
“Malcolm already went over it.” He assured me. “Go have fun.” I nodded as Malcolm started to pull me off in the direction of someone he knew.
“you two need to get your heads out of your asses and actually go on a date or something.” Malcolm whispered as we walked around. My face fell slightly and I turned to look at him.
“who told you that?” I asked. Malcolm gave me a look over his glasses.
“my dear it’s plain to see. You two just started going out right?” I nodded. “So do something about it. Leave that awkward phase behind. He’s taking you out to dinner tonight. Have fun. Enjoy it.”
“no. No no no.” I shook my head. “Tonight is our night. We go out to dinner the first night and the last night of a con. Don’t go breaking tradition on me now Malcolm.” He laughed and started to lead me back over by his table.
“make an exception for me dear.” Malcolm said. “Just this once.” He cupped my cheek and I nodded.
“just this once.” I agreed. We went through our normal convention day, letting Loki handle the money. When it got to be too much for him, I took over and let him take the pictures. At the end of the day, Malcolm hugged me before sending us on our way. “So what do you think?” I asked Loki as we got into my car.
“I think it is definitely something for a certain kind of person.” He said.
“yeah.” I nodded. “You want to grab something to eat?” Loki nodded with a smile. “Let’s grab dinner.” I drove us to the nearest diner and smiled at Loki as we both got out. “Malcolm’s treat.” I joked as we entered. We sat across from each other quietly as we looked over the menu. It didn’t take long for the waitress to come over and take our orders, leaving us without the barrier again. “So…”
“I don’t think I’ll go back tomorrow. But you shouldn’t let that stop you from finishing the weekend. I’ll find something to do.” Loki admitted, breaking the ice.
“oh. Ok.” I said, nodding. “I’ll let Malcolm know after this.” We fell into silence again. “Was it something that happened? Something Malcolm or I said? Or did?” Loki shook his head.
“no. You two were amazing. You more than him.” Loki assured me, hands shooting out to grab mine. “It’s just not something I enjoy very much. The crowds. The noise.” I nodded.
“I understand.” I said with a smile. “Hey why don’t you go hang out at the salon tomorrow? Get some more stories?”
“that honestly sounds a bit fun.” Loki said, smiling sheepishly.
“then it’s a plan. I’ll text Sarah and let her know." I said. We fell back into a comfortable silence as our food arrived. "So uh..."
"I wanted..." Loki started at the same time. We both laughed and I motioned for him to go ahead. "I wanted to say thank you. For everything you've done for me the last couple weeks. And I wanted to say thank you for taking a chance with me..."
"You don't have to thank me." I said with a blush. "Besides, I really like you." Loki smiled at me.
"Well uh there was something I wanted to tell you and I didn't think I should but Malcolm said I should..." Loki rubbed the back of his neck. "Uh...well...to begin with, I love you. I have since the moment I met you. I just...its hard for me to express that. My family...we don't...we never..." He sighed and looked over at me.
"Oh." I breathed out. Loki blushed.
"You don't have to say it back. I know we haven't even really been on a date. It just sort of happened and Malcolm kind of convinced me that I should say it one way or another. And the people I grew up around, well I couldn't be sure if this is what love was supposed to be. So I was worried that if I said it...well..." Loki shrugged and started playing with the food on his plate. "But anyway...I'll take you on a proper date soon. I just..." I started laughing and covered my face with my hands. "What?"
"This is supposed to be a date. Malcolm kind of set it up. Sort of." I said. "I'm laughing at the fact that neither one of us seems to be able to shake this awkward stage of are we or aren't we. Malcolm saw it a mile away and he was supposed to take me out. Its our tradition and he insisted that we go out instead. And it...well didn't go as planned." I peeked out at Loki who was starting to smile at me.
"Start over?" He asked. I nodded.
"Yeah. Let's start over." I agreed. The rest of the night went smoothly and by the end of the night, Loki and I had had our first date.

Extremely rough first stab at the Taz Vs. Dracula lineup bc I love them all so so much already and don’t have the time to finish a lineup of characters for fun rn 🥲
Close up sketches, design notes and surprise drac under the break:
Travis’ characters are always the hardest for me to design idk why, but I made him very western inspired with some vampire hunting flair. Lady Agatha Thistle’s breed was one I hadn’t heard of before but I love a good blood hound. I always end up making Travis’s chapters warm toned, they’re all very red/orange coded to me. (Beef would be the exception I think he’s very pink and blue in my mind)
Clint always makes the sweetest roundest characters I love designing his. I wish we had a cannon spelling because there’s so many directions you can go with “Filo” also his characters are usually green or green adjacent to me. I cant wait to see him bust out more booger potions
Justin never misses with a character and I cling onto every single one he makes so quickly and violently it’s getting embarrassing. I like the idea that she would still dress extremely fancy and posh even tho her new body should be in some battle ready armor. Also I made her blue since she is a Frankenstein’s monster and most likely wouldn’t have the blood flow to have a human color. Plus I love the monster high color palettes so I’m referencing a little bit. Justin has very cool coded characters to me, lots of blue and purple and forest greens.
Probably not sticking with this Dracula design but I want him to love a bit more silly and slick, I think having him be lanky and shorter will pair him very well against our rough and rowdy boys

warnings: lokis scars, swearing, talk of abusive relationship
AN: the con with be in chapter 6. I’ve never worked with Tim curry so I went back and changed it to someone I have worked with. Sorry about that. Also there are elements of the relationship with Pete that mirrors a relationship I had in college. It wasn’t abusive. But our break up wasn’t great (where you’ll hear some of the lovely things Pete said to the reader). I’m also establishing the reader as gender fluid/neutral
When we got back to my apartment, I set Loki up in my guest room. He was a little apprehensive about it.
“I can’t take your extra room. I’ll be out of your hair soon.” He protested. I shook my head.
“We both know that isn’t true Loki.” I waved my hand. “Besides it’s fine. It was getting pretty lonely living on my own.” He nodded and started putting away the things he had bought. I surprised him with dark green sheets and a black comforter from my college days.
“So that was Pete.” Loki started hesitantly as we cooked dinner. I nodded slowly. It was quiet for a bit. “I’m glad you ditched him. He’s a dirtbag.” I chuckled and continued to stir the sauce. Bowing my head, I fought the urge to cry.
“I feel like I owe you an explanation.” I whispered. I put the spoon on the rest and turned towards him. Loki gently reached out and rubbed my arm.
“You don’t owe me anything.” His voice was soothing as he shook his head. “If anything, I owe you.” There was a sad tone to his voice and I put my hand over his on my arm. Squeezing it, I softly smiled at him.
“Let’s agree to disagree.” I teased. I reached around Loki and continued to finish cooking. “But still.” He cocked his head as he leaned against the counter. “I met Pete first year of college. We hit it off, being in the same major. Second year we started hanging out more. In the middle of our third year, I managed to pull together enough courage to ask him out.” Loki shifted and I looked over at him from the corner of my eye.
“You asked him out?” Loki said in wonder. I chuckled and nodded. “Wow.”
“That I did.” I shrugged. “He said yes. Because he wouldn’t hang out with me if he didn’t like me as much as he did.” I looked over at Loki fleetingly again, seeing if he caught the double meaning.
“Wait hold on.” Closing my eyes, the weight of that little confession raising off my shoulders. “He only hung out with you to begin with because he had a crush on you?” I nodded, refusing to look at him. “What? How fucking…what was he…” Loki broke off and came to stand next to me. “I’m so sorry.” I finally looked over at him. He looked so heartbroken for what I had been through. My heart broke a little, seeing him that way. I didn’t like it but I couldn’t help but fall for him a little more seeing how broken up he was about my experiences.
“It went fine. We had a few dates. It seemed like his only flaw was that he didn’t like me going to and working conventions. He didn’t like the guys I helped. He didn’t like that I had pictures of them on my phone or around my room.” I turned back to the stove and pulled some food out of the oven. “Right before Valentine’s Day, he was walking me back to my apartment. We were talking about the classes we were taking. He had to repeat a class. Told me that I was a distraction. I was the reason he had to repeat because he had been paying more attention to me than the class. I said ok fine that’s it then we’re over.” Loki put his hand on the counter, close to mine where I was bracing myself. “He said not really. We could take a break. But I’m not that kind of person. It sounded like an excuse. So I said we could just break up and get back together when it was all said and done.”
“he didn’t like that.” Lokis pinky hooked around mine.
“No.” I hooked my pinky around his. “I saw his offer to take a break as a way for him to find someone else. I didn’t think he’d see my offer the same way.”
“That’s when he said something about that actor.” I nodded.
“He accused me of cheating. I shot back and said he knew I hadn’t and I didn’t appreciate the accusation.” Tears started to well up in my eyes and I forced myself to focus on the task at hand. “He called me a dirty whore. I didn’t know who I was at the time. I was questioning my sexuality at the time. But I knew he was far off base when he said that. I called him a bastard and told him to get out. He went to slap me. I blocked him. He hit the wall and I punched him in the jaw. I cut his lip. Probably knocked a tooth loose.” I sniffles and used my sleeve to wipe my cheeks. “And that’s it. He was a dick. Made me regret a lot of things, feelings.” I looked over at Loki. His jaw was set and he was trying hard to keep his calm.
“(Y/N), I…” I shook my head and grabbed his hand.
“No. Don’t apologize for him. You’re not him. And I appreciate the fact you were willing to beat him to a pulp for the little you knew.” Lokis eyes focused on our hands. “I wouldn’t be the person I am today without that little slip up. I know who I am now. I know better now. I know what to look for.” He nodded and squeezed my hand before helping me finish dinner. We sat at my table and started to eat.
“You said you were questioning your sexuality. What do you mean?” He finally broke the silence.
“I’m gender fluid.” I shrugged. “Same as you. Except I use they/them.” Loki nodded as his gaze flickered over his plate.
“That’s how you knew.” I nodded.
“Don’t worry about it.” I waved my hand. We finished eating in silence before moving to my living room.
“Can I ask one last question?” Loki asked, his tone was almost nervous. In the week or so I’d known him, I hadn’t seen him this way. I nodded. “If the right person came along, would you go out with them?” I nodded, playing with the hem of the blanket draped over the back of my couch.
“If it was the right person.” I agreed. “Why? Do you have someone in mind?” He chuckled and gently took my hand from where I was resting on my leg.
“Maybe.” He smiled softly at me. “How about me?” Smiling brightly at him, I met his eyes.
“Only if you’ll have me.” I agreed as he smiled at me.

just finished episode one. i'm not particularly attached to brands, or easter eggs, or anything like that. i'm used to carving out my own fun from games most people wouldn't find particularly good. i'm not the sort of person who gets a kick out of a reference because i happen to recognize it. that is to say, i went into the show open-minded, but i think understandably cynical giving the current climate of media and streaming. i think video game adaptations are going to be the next big thing, and that we're going to get sick of them. i'm telling you all this preamble to make the point that i am extremely willing to not like it
