Met His Match

In which John Shelby meets his match in the form of a pretty, bold, resilient northern gangster.

Disclaimer: This is set in 1919, just after ww1 and John hasn’t married Esme but he does have his 4 kids still.

John’s morning had been somewhat mundane, nothing out of the ordinary, his kids arguing, Tommy stressing at the betting den but about noon that had changed. Tommy had word of a rival gang from up north sniffing around Birmingham, looking to take over the race tracks.

Tommy had given him and address and a name and sent him on his way, 39 Armory Road, Mr. O’Callahan. That should be easy right, at least John hoped it would be.

The house he arrived at was no different to his home on Watery Lane, that surprised him. He of course had walked passed this house from being 5 aloud to roam the streets, so he knew what the house looked like but h would of thought a rival gang with money would of chosen a nicer head quarters.

He had heard of the O'Callaghan's from his earlier years. They were a family of gypsies who had risen in power to the top. They were exactly like his family apart from no one had ever seen the Mr O'Callaghan himself and lived to tell the tale at least.

John has met his 3 brothers when he was younger but there was a forth and it was the fourth who was in charge.

Knocking on the door and waiting for an answer was probably the most nerve racking thing he had ever done.

“Yes?” A young woman, no older than 21 answered the door. John was star struck, that was not who he had expected to answer the door. He auburn hair flowed gracefully in the breeze as her dress clung to her figure in all the right places.

“What's the matter, Dukes not bit one of yours has he?” The emotion in her eyes was fathoms deep, yet they carried the warmth and life of the sunlit surface. They had a thousand hues of blue and a small touch of hazel radiating in softly swooping arcs.

“No, no,” John stutted, this woman was making him question if he had nocked on the wrong house, “I’m looking for a Mr O’Callaghan, love”

“You better come in then,” The woman sighed.

John was quick to follow behind the woman into her kitchen. “So is he in?”

“I’m assuming your not after Carl or one of the other two, you want him don’t you?” She didn’t sound upset, more intreeged and it was like she was riddiculing him.

“Yeah, we need to talk.” John answered, “Whats yout name, love?”

“Ruth,” she answered smirking.

“Mam,” A little boy, who John assumed was Duke ran into the house through the back door, his dirty bloned hair messy while his bright blue eyes caught a glimpes at John.

“Yes, Duke.” Ruth asked, picking up the boy to cuddle him in.

“i’m tried and who’s that ugly thing?” Duke said pointing at John.

“hey, thats rude appoliges.” Ruth snapped, putting the boy down passing him a cup with jucie in and a blanket from over the back of the chair, “Go to the sofa and lie down, I’ll be through in a mintue.”

“Okay and sorry,” The boy whispered to John, he was no older than 5 but clear a hand full like most gypys kids he had seen, his were the same.

“I’m sorry about him, buts he right, who are you?” Ruth asked.

“John Shelby.”

“Ah, so your the infumase peaky blinder, everyone keeps takin about. I dont see the obsession, your not all that.” Ruth said, sitting back down at the table.

Never in john Shelbys life had he ever been so insulted by a mother and child in the space of 5 minutes.

“Rude.” John mutted lowly.

“what, do you want me to apoligies?” Okay, now she was deffintly riddiculing him.

“What have you got to do with Mr O’Callaghan?” John asked.

Never had he seen a woman laugh more at a serious question. “I am Mr O’Callaghan, darlin’” Her geordie accent was strong and John was suppriesed he could understand her half the time.

“Your the mysterious gangster that controls most of England.” John marvelled.

“You say it likes its hard.” Ruth said, she was relaxed, very relaxed.

“So its you behind the Callaghan Mob, a woman, no rich man.” John was uterly speakless.

“Honey, I am the rich man.” Ruth answered, “John, you have been a while, what exsactily do you want? And be careful what come out of your mouth next, because if you remember I am a ruthless gangster.”

“To talk, we have had word about you wanting to take over the race trackets south of Manchester.”John was calm but in reality he was shitting himself and Ruth could easily see through his facade.

“I have no intensions of taking over race tracks, I can assure you, John. It would be pointless and its not what my boys do.” Ruth paused, poping her head into the living room to check on her son before continguing, “I have a much better propersition for the peaky blinders but I feel like im taking to the wrong brother.”

“Possibly, what you thinking love?”

“The Peaky Blinders re an up and coming gang and a powerful one at that, but you are not going to get to the top by petty street crimes and fighting men who think they are something like Billy fucken Kimber. So what I prepose is we team up. I’m looking to expand, I already control from the scottish boarder to Nottingham but me, my brothers and main cousins are already very streached out, I have someone who controls Scotland under me and some for Walses as well as Luton to the end of the counrty. This is where you come in, I need a gang to tak eover from Nottingham to Luton before I go to ireland to eventully concquere there. So what do you say, me and my connectiongs help you control 1/4 of England in the next 3 years aswell as every race coures on my side of the treaty aswell as your own. All we want is 50% of your profits for the first 3 years then 25% every year after, but I hav e to warn you, double cross me and i will make sure that not one of your family is left.”

“I’ll tell Tommy your preposion and he will be in touch.” John answered, taking in all of the information he had just recieved.

“I hope to see you soon, and if everything work out will be parterns in running the UK’s underworld very soon.

Ruth had to be the one woman that had made John speachless. She was truly an enigma and he was weirdly draw to her.

John Shelby had finaly met his match.

"Are you spending Christmas alone this year?" "Ada, you know, to solve the problem, you must ring the bell." I sighed. "They are still resentful of Tommy. Except for Michael, who is still working, they don't even want to see me." "But our little Ollie hasn't met his cousin yet, has he?" Ada gently rubbed Orlando's head. The little guy was looking up at us, bubbles coming out of his mouth. I bent down and wiped his mouth. Last Christmas Eve, I gave birth to our second child with Tommy, a boy, and named him Orlando. Tommy was a bit disappointed; he thought it would be a girl. But Charles and Carl were happy; they finally had a new playmate. "Danny… we are a family…" "I know." I kept my head down, not looking at Ada. I looked at our son and eventually swallowed the complaints that were on the tip of my tongue, just pulling out a smile. "We are family, dear." I stood by the window, watching Ada leave in the car. I knew there would be a family gathering at John's big house during Christmas, and I think my husband knows that too.

"Family" is a somewhat unfamiliar term to me. It sounds more stable than a spouse but colder than close relatives. In 1914, I fled London and was taken in by Polly, but until I returned to Birmingham in 1920, I always felt like a lone soul, never truly integrated into the Shelby family, even after Tommy and I fell in love—we were more like an ordinary couple with our own families.

"Family" now has their own little families. Before that, the Shelby family was a united force, unstoppable. But Ada has Carl, John and Esme developed feelings through marriage, Polly found Michael again, Arthur met Linda, and everything started to develop in unpredictable directions. I'm not asking them to dedicate their lives to the family without personal feelings. But they have their own calculations, considering their family interests, putting the Shelby family's interests behind.

Yet they demand Tommy to be unwavering.

I still remember the unreasonable demands of the Shelbys when I was injured from the gunshot—Tommy "should" come back. Things they couldn't do, they demanded from my little prince, forcing him to put his beloved wife and child in second place, a position that would continue to torment him with guilt and worry. I dare not imagine what kind of life Tommy would lead if I had slept forever after being shot.

"Family" may be a curse buried in the blood of the Shelby family, a debt that Tommy cannot escape in his lifetime.

After June last year, sometimes I wonder, if the Shelby family only had Tommy, he might have broken through the class barrier long ago, stood in Parliament like other MPs, looking righteous and glorious.

I lower my head.

Ada is now the bridge of communication between Tommy and the rest of the Shelby family, and I can't let him lose this sister because of my grievances.

I didn't say these things just now, and I won't say them to Tommy.

Never.

Tommy has been busy lately, coming home much later than before, and when he comes home, he locks himself in the study. If I didn't have confidence in Tommy and didn't "patrol" the house every day, I would suspect that Tommy had a third party hidden in the study.

I intercepted the maid who brought him wine. "Give it to me." "Please come in."

After getting Tommy's permission, I opened the door and placed the tray of wine on his desk. By the time he saw a hand different from usual, I had already walked behind him. I bent down, my gaze passing over him to look at the documents in his hand.

"Danny."

I heard him calling me, with a pampering and helpless tone. I casually responded.

He hugged my waist, stood up, and kissed my lips. "Caught you, a little cat running around." "Your mouth is dry." After a gentle kiss, I raised my hand to touch his lips. But he opened his mouth and took my fingertip into his mouth. "Pervert!" I glanced at him, pulled out my hand, and gave him the wine.

Tommy took the glass, raised his head, and drank it all at once. Then he continued to hug my waist.

"You've been busy lately. Is there a problem with the company?" "Almost suspected you were keeping a lover in the study." I smiled and avoided his kiss. "What's wrong? Is there a problem with the company?" "But I think you already have a plan?" My curiosity was aroused by the smile on his face.

"Come on, Tommy." I held Tommy's hand and coquettishly said.

He took advantage of it to hug me and stood up, leaning over to kiss me, with small, warm kisses falling on my skin, tickling.

Too ticklish, I couldn't help laughing, gently patting his shoulder, trying to make him stop this childish thing that only Charlie would do.

"It's time, Tommy. I haven't fed Ollie yet!" "You should feed me first, dear."

After the rain stopped, we sat face to face in the bathtub.

"Do you know Jessie Eden?" Tommy leaned against the other end of the bathtub as if sitting on a throne.

"I've heard of her." I thought for a moment, recalling the cute round face woman with an apple. "She's famous, a union leader. Last year, if I remember correctly, on Good Friday, she led other workers to the streets for more women's toilets."

"She's always causing trouble. She thinks the wages of the factory girls are too low."

I looked at my husband sitting on the opposite side with a calm smile, but his smile disappeared.

The Shelby Foundation has always been my responsibility. I know it's a way for Tommy to whitewash, to improve our image in the eyes of the public. Before Ollie was born, I visited the factories under my husband's name. But what I saw shocked me—some pregnant women had to sit in front of the machines.

I was pregnant with Ollie at that time, and I knew how difficult pregnancy could be. Even if Tommy wanted someone to take care of me 24 hours a day, he couldn't make up for the physical pain and discomfort.

My background and assets mean that I never need to work like those women. I just need to take care of Charlie at home, occasionally show my face in Birmingham like a mascot, and enjoy the careful care of the maids and the love from my husband and son. Those women, even when pregnant, had to run for the family's livelihood, and when they returned home, there might be countless chores waiting for them.

Whether it's for the future of the Shelby family or out of sympathy for those women, there are some things I must say.

"Tommy, no matter what, you can't lower their wages. Maintaining the status quo is the best."

If you hurt those women, not only will you lose support, but it may also cause conflicts within the family." "Jessie Eden is a thorn in my side, but I can't just eliminate her. The union has too much influence in Birmingham. We need a plan to control the situation and achieve our goals without causing too much trouble."

I nodded. "I will think about it, and I will help you find a way to deal with this matter properly."

Tommy's eyes softened as he looked at me. "Thank you, my love. I know I can always rely on you."

We finished our bath and got dressed, heading downstairs to join the family for dinner. As we walked hand in hand, I couldn't help but think about the challenges ahead. The world was changing, and the Shelby family needed to adapt. I would do my best to support Tommy, but I also had to ensure the well-being of our family.

As we entered the dining room, the atmosphere shifted. Ada and Michael were sitting at the table, discussing something in hushed tones. John and Esme seemed tense, exchanging glances. Arthur was unusually quiet, his eyes darting between Tommy and me.

I could sense the tension in the air, and I knew that the Shelby family was on the verge of a new chapter, one that would test our bonds and loyalties. The storm was brewing, and I had to navigate through it, not just as Tommy's wife, but as a Shelby with her own convictions.

The dinner table was filled with both the aroma of food and the unspoken weight of the challenges that lay ahead.

book review: The Many Half-Lived Lives of Sam Sylvester by Maya MacGregor

Sam Sylvester is an autistic, non-binary 18-year-old who has just moved to Astoria, Oregon to escape a traumatic event in their past. Sam is interested in what they call “half-lived lives”, people who died before their nineteenth birthdays, and they are worried that they may have the same fate.

So when they move into the house of one of these people, Sam begins an investigation. Everyone in the town claims that the teenage boy who died in Sam’s house was killed in a tragic accident, but Sam and their new friend Shep are convinced it was murder.

I loved this book. The teenage characters were written so realistically and I really liked how Sam was able to find people who they could be themselves around. Also, Sam’s dad was one of my favourite characters! He’s such a good parent because he’s so understanding and kind.

The only thing I wasn’t so sure about with this book was the ending. It just didn’t fully satisfy me, I wanted the mystery to be wrapped up better. But overall, this was a really good book!

From this point on, I will be discussing spoilers and quotes from The Many Half-Lived Lives of Sam Sylvester. If you don’t want to see those, stop reading here!

First I wanted to share my thoughts on the autistic representation in this book.

Sometimes I feel like a balloon with a thousand inputs filling me with conversation noise, smells, clanking chairs, whispers, someone talking to me, so many things until I’m full to bursting but can’t pop, and the only way is to release that pressure with my fists. My leg’s the most usual casualty.

I really relate to the way Sam feels here: it can be hard to find healthy ways to release all the pressure that builds up inside you from just existing in the world. Their dad buys them a punching bag to help them channel these feelings in a way that doesn’t harm them, which was so thoughtful and nice!

“I’m autistic.” “Oh.” Shep nods towards the crosswalk, and I follow, afraid she’s going to say something dreaded like but you don’t seem autistic or you must be “high-functioning” or you should say “person with autism” or some other horrible thing that neurotypical people say to me when they find out, all of which just mean you’re really good at pretending to be “normal”, but you’ll never really be normal. Instead, the next thing out of her mouth is “What’s it like?”

This scene made me so happy! When autistic people trust someone enough to tell them that we’re autistic, people often have reactions that make us uncomfortable. Shep is a good friend because she doesn’t want to be affected by her preconceptions of what autism is, she just wants to support her friend in the way that is best for them.

“Can I tell them you’re autistic?” he asks me, and I appreciate it.

This is something that might be difficult to understand for some people, but it really is important that (when it’s possible) autistic people are allowed to decide whether or not they want to share their diagnosis. It’s a very personal thing and there may be all sorts of reasons why someone wouldn’t want to share, so the best practice is to always ask first.

Now I’m going to write about my thoughts about the plot and the mystery element of the book.

What I found hard to understand in this book was whether or not it was supposed to have a fantasy element. Sam seems to be in communication with Billy, the boy who died in their house, but it was unclear whether this was real, or just their imagination. So I didn’t really enjoy that element of the book.

The mystery was good and I liked the reveal of the murderer being Carl, but Esme thinking she had accidentally killed Billy. But I didn’t like how the mystery of who was threatening Sam was resolved. I’m not even sure who it was that was throwing the rocks at their windows, whether that was one of the people from school or if it was Carl.
