Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dear artists: this is how long I use my cane. I need to have it about 6-8in in front of me for my arm to be straight. When my cane is at my side, my elbow is bent. If you're drawing a character with a cane at their side and their elbow is completely straight, the cane is way too short to be useful.

[ID: Nine photos of a white hand holding a painted cane at different angles, with white walls and a fake wood floor in the background. The cane is first shown from the side, with the black wrist strap off, then on, then from above at an angle. The cane is then held in the other hand, and shown closer up from the side, at a different angle, and a above, with the wrist strap off. The last three show the wrist strap on, and still in the left hand from multiple angles at close up to show the positions of the fingers. The cane is painted with three pride flags. The first is the progress trans flag with stripes of purple, black, blue, pink, yellow, white, yellow, pink, blue, black, and purple. Then the aroace flag, with stripes of orange, yellow, white, light blue, and dark blue. Finally, a rainbow of brown, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, and black. End ID.]
Some more cane drawing references so you can draw disabled characters better.
More photos at:
Cripplepunk - Offset cane collection on Pexels. is missing some because Pexels is annoying.
Web archive collection
I'd post them all here to tumblr, but tumblr keeps eating them and i don't feel like having to sit here an upload them all one at a time.
You're encouraged to download these if you find them helpful. That's why I'm making them.

A general cane guide for writers and artists (from a cane user, writer, and artist!)
Disclaimer: Though I have been using a cane for 6 years, I am not a doctor, nor am I by any means an expert. This guide is true to my experience, but there are as many ways to use a cane as there are cane users!
This guide will not include: White canes for blindness, crutches, walkers, or wheelchairs as I have no personal experience with these.
This is meant to be a general guide to get you started and avoid some common mishaps/misconceptions in your writing, but you absolutely should continue to do your own research outside of this guide!
This is NOT a medical resource!!! And never tell a real person you think they're using a cane wrong!
Tumblr media
The biggest recurring problem I've seen is using the cane on the wrong side. The cane goes on the opposite side of the pain! If your character has even-sided pain or needs it for balance/weakness, then use the cane in the non-dominant hand to keep the dominant hand free. Some cane users also switch sides to give their arm a rest!
A cane takes about 20% of your weight off the opposite leg. It should fit within your natural gait and become something of an extension of your body. If you need more weight off than 20%, then crutches, a walker, or a wheelchair is needed.
Putting more pressure on the cane, using it on the wrong side, or having it at the wrong height can make it less effective, and can cause long term damage to your body from improper pressure and posture. (Hugh Laurie genuinely hurt his body from years of using a cane wrong on House!)
(some people elect to use a cane wrong for their personal situation despite this, everyone is different!)
Tumblr media
(an animated GIF of a cane matching the natural walking gait. It turns red when pressure is placed on it.)
When going up and down stairs, there is an ideal standard: You want to use the handrail and the cane at the same time, or prioritize the handrail if it's only on one side. When going up stairs you lead with your good leg and follow with the cane and hurt leg together. When going down stairs you lead with the cane and the bad leg and follow with the good leg!
Realistically though, many people don't move out of the way for cane users to access the railing, many stairs don't have railings, and many are wet, rusty, or generally not ideal to grip.
In these cases, if you have a friend nearby, holding on to them is a good idea. Or, take it one step at a time carefully if you're alone.
Now we come to a very common mistake I see... Using fashion canes for medical use!
Tumblr media
(These are 4 broad shapes, but there is INCREDIBLE variation in cane handles. Research heavily what will be best for your character's specific needs!)
The handle is the contact point for all the weight you're putting on your cane, and that pressure is being put onto your hand, wrist, and shoulder. So the shape is very important for long term use!
Knob handles (and very decorative handles) are not used for medical use for this reason. It adds extra stress to the body and can damage your hand to put constant pressure onto these painful shapes.
The weight of a cane is also incredibly important, as a heavier cane will cause wear on your body much faster. When you're using it all day, it gets heavy fast! If your character struggles with weakness, then they won't want a heavy cane if they can help it!
This is also part of why sword canes aren't usually very viable for medical use (along with them usually being knob handles) is that swords are extra weight!
However, a small knife or perhaps a retractable blade hidden within the base might be viable even for weak characters.
Tumblr media
Bases have a lot of variability as well, and the modern standard is generally adjustable bases. Adjustable canes are very handy if your character regularly changes shoe height, for instance (gotta keep the height at your hip!)
Canes help on most terrain with their standard base and structure. But for some terrain, you might want a different base, or to forego the cane entirely! This article covers it pretty well.
Many cane users decorate their canes! Stickers are incredibly common, and painting canes is relatively common as well! You'll also see people replacing the standard wrist strap with a personalized one, or even adding a small charm to the ring the strap connects to. (nothing too large, or it gets annoying as the cane is swinging around everywhere)
Tumblr media
(my canes, for reference)
If your character uses a cane full time, then they might also have multiple canes that look different aesthetically to match their outfits!
When it comes to practical things outside of the cane, you reasonably only have one hand available while it's being used. Many people will hook their cane onto their arm or let it dangle on the strap (if they have one) while using their cane arm, but it's often significantly less convenient than 2 hands. But, if you need 2 hands, then it's either setting the cane down or letting it hang!
For this reason, optimizing one handed use is ideal! Keeping bags/items on the side of your free hand helps keep your items accessible.
Tumblr media
When sitting, the cane either leans against a wall or table, goes under the chair, or hooks onto the back of the chair. (It often falls when hanging off of a chair, in my experience)
When getting up, the user will either use their cane to help them balance/support as they stand, or get up and then grab their cane. This depends on what it's being used for (balance vs pain when walking, for instance!)
That's everything I can think of for now. Thank you for reading my long-but-absolutely-not-comprehensive list of things to keep in mind when writing or drawing a cane user!
Happy disability pride month! Go forth and make more characters use canes!!!

hi, i'm working on a oc rn & one thing i've decided is that she'll have a leg disability in a victorian era setting. i kinda see her needing to use a cane occasionally...i had a knee injury that left me with a limp for six months, but i never needed aid & nowadays, I just need to be careful not to strain my knee. i don't know how much i can use my experience as a guide to wirte my oc, do you have any advice about how to go about this and how to write a character with a cane?
Thank you for your ask! Whether or not your personal experience applies to your character depends on what her disability is. Your experience does sounds like several of my friends who do use canes. In this case she’d probably bring her cane when she knows she’ll have to be on her feet and/or walk around for a while, and how often that is/why depends heavily on her class. She could also use her cane for days her pain is worse, which can be caused by over exerting her leg (which can be painful for a day or a few weeks), or just a random bad pain day.
Here’s a link to a post we reblogged about writing cane users! You can also check out our #canes tag for more information.
Have a nice day!

some drawing references for an offset cane hand pose. Meant to do this outside for good lighting but it decided to rain all day lol.
There will be better versions when it's not constantly thunderstorming since I need good lighting and also someone else to take the pictures.
Tumblr media
[ID: Two cropped photos next to eachother, first from the side, then the front, showing a white hand holding a cane with a black foam handle, black wrist strap, and the metal of the cane painted in stripes of purple, black, and blue. In the background you can see the model's striped blue shirt and shorts, and a white sheet with a pattern of black squares. End ID.]
And painting version for arm pose and the front of the cane.
My arm looks orange because I forgot we have yellow lights in the hall and colorpicked from that lol. oh well.
Tumblr media
[ID: Two lineless digital painting versions of the same images as above, showing more of the picture, with the person standing sideways on a white background, with the tank top drawn as solid blue, and the stripes on the cane now revealed to form the trans progress flag, with stripes of purple, black, blue, pink, yellow, white, yellow, pink, blue, black, and purple. End ID.]
anyways feel free to save for drawing references, that's why I made this. There's not enough drawing references for people using canes, so I'm being the change I want to see in the world.
I'm uploading a bunch more to the web archive, currently loading, I'll add the link here when it's done. Tumblr keeps eating the pictures when I try to post them here.

Little things I don't think non-cane users would know cause Issues™, for reference in writing!
- gusty wind not only throws personal centre of balance off but if you've got a lightweight metal cane it will throw your placement of the cane off
- same goes for being driven past by busses or lorries
- uneven pavements can suck my ass the cane is meant to be parallel to your leg and this is very hard to do when the pavement isn't level
- same goes for cobbled streets, brick paved streets tend to be smoother so I love them <3
- some paving slabs get really slippy when they're wet! This often means that I lean on my cane much heavier bc I can't rely as much on even my good leg to stay stable
- yes cane height should be adjusted to account for heels/ wedged shoes it's a bit of a bastard if you used a fixed length cane
- using a cane for the first few days/weeks hurts! If u only use it irregularly/ on bad days it can hurt every time! Wrists aren't used to taking weight in this way.
Check RBs and my asks tag for more info!

Cane user here! You can get some extremely comfortable and highly decorative canes for daily use. And you can end up with a collection of them unintentionally if you aren't paying too close attention to how many you're getting to match certain outfits. You can have a MASSIVE collection of them if you are doing so deliberately.
Which is to say, I'm 100% on board with Gundham Tanaka, the Supreme Overlord of Ice, born of an Angel and a Demon, would absolutely have a collection of fancy canes and refer to them as something like his Infernal Armaments or something along those lines.
Also, walking sticks/staffs. He'd have those too.
Oh that's really cool! That totally seems like him too hes like ... every day a cane chooses HIM and he must serve its dark whims...
