Is Guren a narcissist?
Lately I dislike Kagami's portrayal of Guren as much as the next person and tbh there's absolutely no way you can make me think he's an innocent victim or a tragic hero we should root for (though I still do root for him cause he's just pathetic and gay I love him). However, the amount of times i've seen both the hispanic and english fandom call him a narcissist is kinda surprising 👀 Now the question is...
So since I'm petty and I like analysing useless stuff, let's take a look at Guren's behavior and at what makes a narcissist to try to give a more elaborate answer. I'll give as a disclaimer that I don't intend to attack anyone or force anyone to like Guren with this post, I'm just a psychology student currently investigating personality disorders and I thought this take would be fun to share.
Also, english is not my main language so do feel free to point out if you see I make any mistake so I can correct it, please ;u;
So for starts, if we're talking about the reasons for why people use to call him a narcissist I believe that pointing out his behavior towards Yuu is a very fair argument, especially his behavior towards Yuu at the beginning of the manga. Guren expresses himself with superiority, these airs and graces and apparent laziness and lack of thoughtfulness. However I believe that if you know how the story in the light novels go and even more if you've read them, you'll realize that all this "I'm your saviour, your god, you owe me your life, blah, blah, blah" crap that Guren tells to Yuu is a way of imposing authority and exerting some kind of control over him.
Guren needed to exert this control and authority as a way to protect himself, his subordinates and his investigations from the JIDA higher-ups, but also to keep Yuu at bay, not only because he was a part of Guren's experiments but also because Yuu used to be a very asocial and volatile kid when Guren took him under his wing. Having an angry kid acting impulsively at his leisure all around the JIDA was not convenient for Guren or for anyone, honestly.
And yes, I'm not gonna deny that Guren is kind of a jerk, but that has more to do with his personality and his sense of humor than with being a narcissist. He's sarcastic, super hard-headed, quite blunt and may come off as conceited, but he's actually extremely aware of all of his mistakes and shortcomings. He recognizes that he is not the smartest or the strongest out there, he knows how powerless he is in the grand scheme of things and most importantly, he recognizes his mistakes and is absolutely willing to take his share of the blame for it.
Sure, he knows that he is a strong individual but that's because he's worked towards the objective of "being strong" his entire life, he's cultivated perseverance and done sacrifices in order to achieve that strength, and while he does like to show off sometimes, recognizing one's merits and being aware of your capacities is hardly the same as having delusions of grandeur. Plus, his motivations are very much oriented to help others, protect others; and although Guren used to have a very strong sense of self-preservation, after the catastrophe he decides to let go of it if it means that it will help him to achieve those goals of keeping his loved ones safe. He starts doing what he 'has' to do rather than whe he wants to do.
After Nagoya's Arc, the shameless and overbearing side of Guren's behavior gets toned down. He becomes more serious, he doesn't play and makes jokes as often and he also stops trying to impose himself to Yuu in the same way as before. There's no need of that superiority facade anymore after all the things that came to light and now that the JIDA poses less of a threat and that Yuu has become less of a subordinate and more of a collaborator, exerting the same authority as before is just not necessary.
And now that we're referring to Yuu, we also gotta point out that a narcissist lacks empathy and doesn't go out of his way to try to help or benefit other people, but Guren does feel affection towards Yuu. When Yuu came to him as a child full of rage, resentment, guilt and lust for revenge, Guren genuinely empathized with him, he took care of Yuu, tried to teach him what he knew and he pushed him to build a support network with his classmates when he didn't really had to do all that. He could've simply taken advantage of Yuu's grief and solitude to control everything about him and force him to collaborate, but he didn't. Even when doing that would've been the best and most practical option for Guren's purposes, he still decided against isolating Yuu. Plus a narcissist wouldn't be capable of the affection and compassion that Guren feels for Yuu. And it is also made clear that Guren does not enjoy using Yuu or hurting him, but Shinya and his squad are Guren's priority, putting his options in a balance, he knows that he has no choice but to keep using Yuu to make his plan work. And it IS selfish and cruel and abusive, we're not going to deny that, but arguing that he doesn't care about Yuu or anyone else but himself is a pretty reductionist (and tbh also incorrect) statement.
Now, let's take a look at Shinya's opinion about Guren, taking into account that Shinya is probably the person who knows Guren the best out of all of the Catastrophe at 16 cast and probably all of OnS.
First of all we have this scene during the Nagoya Arc in which Shinya shows concern about Guren cause he knows that Guren suffers when people die and that he's not good at handling that.
Guren cares about his subordinates, he is saddened by the death of his soldiers and during this arc, he even makes the rather emotional choice of going straight into a trap in order to save other soldiers that Crowley is holding as hostages, even when Mito and Shinya warn him that they shouldn't do it cause it is clearly a trap.
I know there's a lot of material that I'm not covering, but for the sake of not making this post longer than it already is, let's go ahead and just check some of the behavioural criteria that a person has to meet to be diagnosed/classified as a Narcissist; of course, taking into consideration that meeting one or two criteria isn't enough cause it is very likely that everyone will present some of these criteria some times throughout our lives. For a person to be considered a narcissist they must meet various criteria which manifest constantly in various different contexts of their life for most of the time. Some of the criteria include:
•A grandiose sense of self-importance, being it fantasies or behaviors and the expectation to be recognized as superior without real reasons.
In Guren's case, he's not really the type that brags about his deeds or that goes about life expecting people to praise him, specially when there's no reason. The only times one could say that he sort of acts this way is in his interactions with Yuu in the early chapters.
•A narcissist is very often preoccupied with fantasies of unlimited success, power, brilliance, beauty, or ideal love.
Although Guren, does desire power and recognition, he is aware of all he's lacking and beats himself up because of all these things that he knows he isn't good enough to achieve. We can also notice that ultimately, his desire for power originates from his desire to keep his loved ones safe.
•A narcissist believes that they are “special” and unique and they only want to associate with, other special or high-status people (or institutions).
In Guren's case, he knows that he kinda sucks. A lot of the people around him belong to a higher status, have a higher military position or are better than him in one way or the other. What Guren does is working towards his betterment. He doesn't believe he's special, in the novels, he even seems to be a bit ashamed about the subordinates in the Ichinose manor thinking that he is a prodigy. We also have that although it is obvious that Guren regards his squad as the most important people to him, and is willing to commit atrocities and become very self-sacrificial for them it is not because 'they are the best' or because they have a high status that Guren's ego can feed on, but just because he loves them.
•A narcissist has an excessive need for admiration
Guren is indeed an admired character, however he doesn't "need" to be admired. Even before the apocalypse, the motive behind his goal was not to be admired but bring respect and dignity to his beaten up clan. He's had plenty of chances to show off, but he just doesn't really needs to be admired for that.
•A narcissist exploits their interpersonal relationships for their own benefit.
This point is a bit tricky cause Guren is undeniably using Yuu and he had the same intentions with Kimizuki and Yoichi to achieve his goals. However, besides from knowing that Guren would not be doing this if there was another way, when we take a look at the rest of his interpersonal relationships, specially with his squad, being exploitative of their relationship for his own benefit is just not there.
Some other criteria include an excessive sense of entitlement, a lack of empathy, constant envy and the belief that others are envious of them, and haughty behaviors, all of which we already tackled before.
So, taking everything in consideration, we come to the conclusion that although Guren has displayed some narcissistic attitudes, overall he does not fit the profile, therefore, Guren is not a narcissist.
This of course doesn't mean that we have to condone all the bad things he's done, but rather may help us gain a bit more insight into Guren's character. Exploring his relationship's dynamics, and other mental health conditions which's profiles he may fit would be fun as well. He is indeed a very flawed character, and maybe that's what makes him interesting.

Honestly, every time someone tells me that they enjoy Sing to Me so much, I am getting really happy. This fic means a lot to me and gives me lots of strength and stability, although on the outside it might look that I am not doing much for it for the past year (I do, it's just background work that I can't show T_T massive spoilers and so on). But I mean, I kept saying that each time somebody came to my inbox about it for the last months.
And I am so glad to know that you're feeling like this for each chapter you've read so far!
This fic in itself is really complex and long, I could give you a rough estimate of around ~100 Chapters for the main story (Those would be just arc 1-3, the series, however, has 6 arcs in total excluding the 2 AUs). Sooo... let me say, you've got a lot to look forward to, I suppose :3
Also I hope that you'll be curious about the revisions too. Chapter 5 and 6 will have a darker tone than their current version that is on AO3 at the moment, but also will be much better in quality. Chapter 6 will have major changes I think, especially the second halve of it.
I am all giddy and excited myself whenever I think about all the plans I have for this story. The drama, the comedy, the (bitter-) sweetness, but also the chaos, the pain and the darker parts of this fic.
I wish I could go on a ramble but it's so many spoilers lmao
And I don't want to take that away from my readers. If anything, I might drop a few essays about Raiden and Sam that I've got on my to-do list at some point, that in some cases will directly tie to Sing to Me as well.
The series also goes in great detail about Sam's past and who he is as a person because I was a bit dissatisfied with how most fics for this pairing at least that I've read didn't come up with much for his past (but I still liked all of them regardless), hence I went a little bit insane about him.
To the point that Sam is technically my OC now (according to my beta reader) lmao

My vault is an absolute mess still tbh because the program is a bit overwhelming when you don't know where to start, so this is far from how complex this fic actually even is.
What I can tell you pretty much spoiler free is that the series is complex because timeline wise, it starts in the year of 2001 and ends (technically) in the year of 2026.
I say technically because ARC3.5: The War in Heaven goes a bit crazy with science fiction elements and time is... let's say, "relative".
The main fic spans from 2019 until 2023 btw.
The prequel (ARC0: I Come with Knives) is entirely about Sam's past, from his POV entirely, and a collaboration with @thatthereneverwas since he originally requested me to write it.
Basically adding more Sam lore that we definitely need :3

NAME: abaddon would name them abel just to fuck with cain. but i feel like cain would veto that so hard. so the only other option is samael. no negotations.
GENDER: male, and it would piss abbie so much bc she wanted a girl.
GENERAL APPEARANCE: tall and blue eyed like daddy. and amazing hair, like daddy. this kid would be HOT, okay. i feel like because abaddon doesn't have a physical form, the baby would probably come out looking all cain. which she would love. that's exactly what she would be after in this.

SPECIAL TALENTS: all the usual sorta demon powers. being the son of an archdemon would probs give him a bit of an edge. BUT i think his speciality would be fire. he strikes me as a pyromaniac. bitch will summon hellfire and just fuck shit up because he can. he's a lovely little firestarter demon baby.
WHO THEY LIKE BETTER: abaddon. she lets him get away with murder. lit. she doesn't care that he's mean or doesn't eat his veggies or w/e lol. she lit is the parent that will give the child cookies before bed and not even tell them to brush their teeth but x100000. if cain ever tries to teach this kid anything good, abaddon would just go and undo that a thousand times over. she's the worst.
WHO THEY TAKE AFTER MORE: ABBIE lol. honestly you wouldn't even think if this kid was cain's if not for the fact he looks like him. this is abbie's baby through and through. she corrupted this kid and made him her mirrored self.
PERSONAL HEADCANON: he wants his father's approval and hates that he isn't so free with it as his mother is. despite being... a nightmare, abaddon is actually surprisingly loving with her son. she gives him praise and all the attention in the world. mostly bc she craved that praise and attention from lucifer and from god and never received it, so it's her way of satisfying that need she has. everything he does is a desperate cry for attention for both mummy AND daddy.
FACECLAIM: sam corlett! he's the only one i can think of that has the build, the hair AND the eyes. the eyes are so important!
'ro & cain's hell spawn:
NAME: morgana or hecate. something witchy like that.
GENDER: FEMALE. rowena would do some kinda spell to ENSURE that ok. she is not having another nightmare boy. THANK YOU VERY FUCKING MUCH. but also, after losing oscar, i don't think she could go through with it, either.
GENERAL APPEARANCE: she honestly looks like a younver version of rowena! same hair, same height, same eyes. her nose is her father's, her chin, too, but other than that, her mother's spitting image! well, other than her freckles.
PERSONALITY: she'd be smart and cunning like her mother, but quiet and reserved like her father. she'd definitely be a witch, too, and pursue that full time and truly fall in love with spells and witch craft. she'd learn everything she could from her mother, but she'd also love spending time tending to bees or in nature with her father. she is surprisingly sweet, but don't piss her off. she has her mother's accent and is ready to cut someone if she has to.
SPECIAL TALENTS: she's a very gifted potion maker, particularly healing potions. she studied herbs and ancient texts and what not, and she's very focused in the healing arts. mostly because she's fascinated by what mother nature gives humans and what a little magic can do with nature!
WHO THEY LIKE BETTER: it depends on the day. i think when she is learning magic and cooking and feeling a little more vulnerable, rowena is her fave. but when she wants peace and quiet and to sit comfortable in quiet reflection, cain is the one she runs to! i think there's a quite nice balance.
WHO THEY TAKE AFTER MORE: i think rowena. mostly because of the whole witchy thing. but she's definitely her own person in a way, too. neither of her parents are as kind and warm as she is, particularly with strangers. their answer is always KILL first ask questions later, so in a way she'd almost try to teach them a little more... humanity, so to speak. no one knows where that warmth has come from, given who and what both her parents are.
PERSONAL HEADCANON: she secretly tried summoning the spirits of her dead brothers and sisters. which, you know, there's a shit ton of them??? she wanted to know more about them and her dad and like. who the fuck else is out there that she's related to, you know??? but it didn't go well as necromancy never does and it was a really close call. rowena had to help her, and it's a secret between them that they don't share with dad because she is particularly afraid of him finding out she tried making contact with her dead uncle and grandparents lol. but she's just curious ok!!!!!!!! her dad is like, the oldest human alive and HE DOESN'T TELL HER ABOUT THAT SHIT.

You explained it so very well here. I get jungkook's irritation by constantly getting babied by this big fandom (wish that could change) but he also has to understand that a part of the fandom has seen him grow from like 15-16 years to 26 years now so they do see him as a younger boy than other members. Tbh, it's not just about him growing up in front of us (even if not in real time). Fandoms like this naturally have jealous and possessive fans, and some fans are less than mature about it. Him being babied is partially the result of him being the maknae, but there are other factors. If RM and Suga were the ones caught smoking it wouldn't be an issue, and a dating "scandal" wouldn't be as big of a deal, so it's always worse for Jungkook, but fans reacting badly to normal stuff is just part of being an idol. That's why Jungkook's plan to look more "mature" so fans see him that way is flawed. Suga has a "rougher" image so he can "get away" with more, but he's also less popular. The maknae line's considerable popularity over the hyung line's more than half the reason why things are always worse for them. It goes beyond having an innocent image.
The thing with Jimin, though, is that he's always been "cutie, sexy, lovely". His cuteness is also sexy. Jimin is the cutest, but his resting face is serious and mature. He's always been very thoughtful, flirty, sometimes savage, and headcanoned a Slytherin. Jimin was never babied like Jungkook. He likes being called cute and leans into it, but he knows fans are always losing it over him being sexy and calling him hot. His duality is well know and he isn't at all defined or limited by being the number 1 cutie - there's power in being cute and Jimin likes that power and uses it to his advantage (to tease and please the fans). It's also different with Jimin because in the beginning he acted a bit tough and manly, and shared how freeing it was to just be himself and drop the act. To him being cute and babied is funny and flattering, though when fans take it too far he sets them straight. It's different from Jungkook because he wasn't forced to rip his shirt off on stage as a 17 or 18 year old rookie like Jimin, who developed a reputation for being sexy...

I feel like I talk about Daniel a lot actually, if you haven't already peeked my Daniel Molloy and Armand/Daniel tags! Still working on perfecting my tagging system though, bear with me.
When it comes to Daniel, it's interesting because AR didn't give us much on him, so it can feel very fanon/headcanon territory sometimes as opposed to cold hard facts. But she gave us enough.
Likes/Dislikes
I honestly don't think I dislike anything about him! Maybe if he'd gotten more screen-time I'd have had a chance to come up with something.
I think my favorite Daniel quotes sum up (at least partially) why I enjoy him so much. He's inquisitive, daring, sharp as hell. And still so painfully innocent. It hurts. He was just a kid!
First Impressions
Can't lie, baby me wasn't too impressed with Daniel right off the bat. I started the series out of order with TVA (which explains a lot about me tbh I think), and being introduced to Daniel as a character via Armand's traumatized, depressive, disassociating perspective isn't great.
Then I read B&G because I had to know what happened with Marius and Armand (fucked myself over there), but hey Daniel's also here! And it's not... great. But then, I went back to the library, got the first three books, and binged them through in order and met Daniel the way Anne had intended us to.
I was way too young (12-13?) to appreciate themes that weren't spelled out for me, i.e. the S&M and D/s dynamics. I just thought "Oh, this is dark and sad and also hilarious... shame he goes crazy and we never see him again, I guess." Older teenage me had her come-to-Jesus moment with Devil's Minion now that I knew what I was looking at... and I just- still to this day- I can't believe Anne did that in 28 pages. Just doesn't make sense. Objectively, I think it's the best 28 pages she ever wrote. It competes with a few other VC passages for my all-time favorite, but I wholeheartedly think it is the overall best.
The older I get and the more I experience life, the more I understand Devil's Minion, and VC in general. It's such a brutal and exquisitely beautiful story. And Daniel is such a fucking great character. AR was so incredibly skilled at intertwining the human experience into her work even in the most ridiculous of scenarios (i.e. rockstar vampires), and it absolutely shines through with Daniel Molloy and Devil's Minion.

You know I’m also getting worried about the continuity of OPM. Regardless of what I think of ONE and his new work versus or him leaving the wc or not… I am indeed getting worried about the issues of continuity piling up. It does indeed feel like uncanny valley and while I don’t judge people that see this one way or another (optimistically or otherwise) I do have expectations for things to fall into their place nicely. While I left OPM for many years, once I started reading again, I hadn’t seen so many loose ties. It’s understandable too because we are at a point where the stakes are high, getting bi-monthly updates, so it’s bound to raise tensions because we don’t know how long things will take to start unraveling; it’s safe to say it’s not unreasonable to have our own doubts either, so I think it’s valid if people are expressing their concerns, especially if they don’t know the ins and outs of ONE as a writer.
Though I’ve seen that people that have read his other works have more of a hopeful take on this moment of tension.
It is valid to have concerns, but we're setuped pretty nicely for continuity aspects I feel (within just one chapter and it happened organically where heroes came together to pile up all the info they knew, which is impressive tbh), just for all the wc plotlines alone, but there's plenty room for other exploration of themes on the go.
But I suppose the update schedule, while it's fast enough on it's own, makes one kind of antsy because situation around the world irl is...not exactly ideal. Getting to the end could easily take 5-7 years. But you cannot rush a good product. We'll probably get smaller arcs and not like, one large MA arc too.
I'll just say give it time and the plot will start to unravel at a decent pace, we already got a nice start. I'm honestly less worried for the plot unfolding properly than outside factors...
As for the uncanny valley, I find that really interesting personally because if it wasn't for wc existing beforehand, we would not have this uncanny valley of expecting something to go differently but somehow feeling that not everything is as it seems and the writer seems to take full advantage of this to create some kind of tension in the air and murata's artistic vision follows through. All the inconsistencies sharp readers can notice will no doubt come to a head at some point.
Being worried is fine, but I just don't feel like trashing the writer for inane reasons or making mockery out of a professional who's product I enjoy reading for free or making a big deal about the fact that the writer is writing something else for a change, like some of the more pessimistic folk have a tendency to do. If I was personally unhappy with the plot and not having fun reading anymore, I'd just drop the series. I played Overwatch since 2016 and I've not touched the game for many, many months.
Broadening horizons as a writer should be a great boon in terms of creativity for ONE too, so I'm not really worried about the storyline progression.
If Murata-sensei gets excited about storyboards, I will too haha. He has good taste.
At the end, it's just about having fun reading manga and engaging with the fandom that follows. If one stops having fun, they don't need to force themselves to engage. But neither can someone please every single person no matter what they do, so there's always going to be critique thrown around.

I loved every moment you mentioned too! The greatest is so good, it was one of my immediate favourites on the album on first listen so hearing it as the opener was awesome. SIBWAWC delivered as expected!!! So good. It was just such a strong setlist! I agree about the 1D songs, I never really listened to 1D (other than how everyone my age did, in the sense that the music was everywhere so you picked stuff up) so I wasnt that familiar with WDBHG but Louis made it fun! I'd be fine with only one 1D cover (especially if it gave us headline, common people or TTWLG which im keeping my fingers crossed will get rotated in)
The production was really good, I'm a fairly new fan so haven't seen too much of Louis' last tour (mostly just clips) so it was really cool to see all the screens and lights. You can tell a lot of thought goes into making it feel cohesive.
I was soooo pleased to hear Copy, it's just SUCH a good song and he looked confident singing it.
Also back to you!!! I really didn't expect that, it was such a good version. And "Miss you" was one of the first Louis songs I discovered and really loved (very late discovery as this was like...last year? Haha) and I've always thought it would be SUCH a great song to experience live so that gives me a bit of hope that maybe we'll get a version of it at some point on this tour. (Whishful thinking maybe!)
Also got to mention going from saved by a stranger (Also so good) to WAOYF...the emotional whiplash!!!! It worked though!

He really did transport us to another world with sibwawc didn't he 😌 his mind is just superior. The production was mind blowing and a true step up from last tour (ltwt's production was still amazing though). Copy is a masterpiece no doubt about that the imagerie of the lyrics is insane. BTY in 2023? If someone told me that before the show i would never believe them but it made me so happy for many reasons. There is hope for miss you after all 😭 ( i think at some point he's going to replace bty with miss you and if it happens idk how i'll survive). There was so many surprises last night but honestly the biggest one for me was him singing saved by a stranger ❤️🩹(the bravery, the grace!!). Not only that he also made it kind of rock and followed it with waoyf (that fan in the live stream who was silent the whole time but felt the need to shout "can we pls go back to fucking" instead of " loving" didn't go unnoticed🔪🔪). Tbh, i always thought if he really had to perform a 1d song, night changes would be a good one (his solo is so angelic in it) and i enjoyed it when he performed it in the past. But this time, even i was surprised that the 1d covers didn't work for me. I think fitf is just a beast on a whole other level and performing 1d songs among such a brillant setlist emphasizes the quality differece between Louis' solo songs and the band's, sorry. Night changes followed by Chicago and wdbhg put between ooms and saturdays (and then silver tongues) was almost humilating for them if it weren't for Louis' perfect delivery and witt (and angelic voice). I can talk about the show forever and in detail about each and every song but i didn't want to make this any longer. Time Travel ft. Leia and Vader

I was reading a bunch of different time travel fics, and my brain slotted in that one "Vader hands over the Empire to Leia and is now her most devoted sycophant" dynamic and mixed it with the "Luke and Vader time-travel and Vader does the right thing but only because it would make Luke sad if he didn't."
I landed on "Leia time travels to prequels era, but her least favorite family member has also traveled with her, though it takes him a few months to find her because he has less resources without the entire Imperial Navy, but he's still a scary Sith in all black with a breathing mask and intimidating cape."
"Tiny angry lady who wants to force democracy and her giant Sith father whom she hates but has resigned herself to pointing at threats like a tank who inexplicably loves her" is a delightful dynamic.
The first few months included a lot of concern about "why do you know so much about Sith if you're not trained or looking to be one" and then Vader shows up and calls her 'daughter' and she insults him and it's like "Oh. That explains it."
Council Member: We have a Sith in the Temple.
Vader: Former Sith.
Leia: Listen. He is your best chance against Sidious. Also, do you want Dooku dead? Vader can make him dead.
Council Member: Your father i--
Leia, scrunching up her face: Don't call him that.
Like Leia is deep in conversation when the Temple starts panicking because Vader just. Showed up? He snuck in, somehow? So Palpatine wouldn't catch him on video entering through the front door? And people try to keep her away from the trouble, because there's an entire array of Jedi Masters to deal with this Surprise Sith, except she can sense exactly which Sith it is and once she shouts "oh you have got to be kidding me!" she just starts running and, well, it's Leia. Nobody can stop her.
(Leia does have less combat training, at least less force-assisted combat training, than the Jedi. But then the Jedi don’t want to hurt here here. She's not fighting her way down, either, she's just running really fast and all the best fighters already left. They had a head start. So Leia's mostly running past random padawans and the like.)
She shoves her way to the front of the group of Masters who. Well, they're certainly ready to attack. But Vader is just standing there. Doing nothing. Still intimidating as fuck but he's not doing anything.
And then Leia bursts onto the scene like "You motherfucker."
She hits her head on a clipboard and whines because UGH he's a walking WMD and they could REALLY use him against Palpatine but also. She hates him so much.
She tries to hand him off to the Jedi council but he insists that he will only take orders from Leia herself.
Jedi: Wait, what.
Leia, completely ignoring them: Did you follow me here?
Vader, through the mechanical wheezing: I have no loyalty to my master and no empire to serve. You are all that I have left.
Leia: Me? Me? I'm all that you have left? You committed a genocide that killed all the family I had except for the twin brother you later mutilated!
Jedi: Wait what
Vader, going to one knee: I pledge my loyalty and blade to you and only you, daughter.
Leia, ready to explode: I. I just.
Jedi, some of whom really want to say things but are slowly realizing that they just accidentally acquired a Sith Lord by proxy: What.
Leia: I hate you so much but I can't even get rid of you, you're too useful.
Vader: I live to serve.
Leia: Yeah. Got that. Fuck. Someone get him a full medical rundown, I don't know the last time that mess of a life support system was updated.
Jedi, agitated again: WHAT
Leia: Listen, I don't like him, but I'm not stupid enough to throw away the second most dangerous person in the universe when I can point him at the most dangerous person in the universe. Especially not if he's going to listen to me.
Jedi: But... he's a Sith.
Leia: Please trust me when I say this: you might be able to take him down eventually, but he will take dozens of you down with him, and right now he's... honestly, I'm pretty sure he's more depressed than malicious.
Jedi: You hate him. I can feel it.
Leia: Yes, but I can be professional about it.
Vader: They have not yet d--
Leia: Nope! No talking! Not until I've had a chance to process this mess!
There is a whole lot of Leia snapping at Vader to stop it whenever he starts giving off vibes like he wants to take the most violent shortcut possible.
She is not the gentle hand that Luke would be.
Leia isn't a Jedi or working for them but she's wormed her way into being an ally. They don't 100% trust her, especially not with Vader just showing up and declaring her family but like
How do you say no to a WMD walking into your house and saying "I will fight the monster you cower from at night."
There's a lot of Leia snapping off an admonishment that sounds just a little too odd and then when questioned she just says "He knows what he did."
tbh I'm not sure how long it takes for them to tell anyone that Anakin is Vader. They might hold it off in hopes that Anakin can just retire to be Mr. Amidala after the war is over.
Well, Leia hopes. Vader just lets Leia make that call and then glowers at his younger self every time they're in the same room.
I do feel like Leia tells Obi-Wan the truth first
Imagine. Imagine a Vader who’s past still isn’t known. But has gotten somewhat comfortable around the Jedi (not really but the bar for what counts and comfortable for him is low). And Obi-Wan habitually banters with darksiders, right? If Vader’s guard is down for a moment and he, without thinking, references an inside joke...
Might be the most fun in terms of ways to tell Obi-Wan "We're time travelers and Vader is what happens if you let Palpatine drive Anakin off the edge"
If Vader has decided to pledge himself to her orders after destroying her planet, then fine. She can work with that. She's not going to be happy about it, but she can make it work.
The Jedi Temple hates having Vader anywhere nearby but he is actually very good at hiding himself from people, including Palpatine And for all that Leia seems perpetually irritated with her apparent bodyguard, he does seem to listen to her.
Jedi council: We still haven't figured out how to handle Dooku
Leia: Do you know his location?
Jedi council: Yes.
Leia: [sigh]
Leia: Vader, deal with it. Alive if possible.
(Leia does need to clarify an acceptable level of violence against the people protecting Dooku.)
(She needs to clarify... many things.)
Leia always says "Vader" and one time a poor fool just asks why she doesn't call him dad and she snarls out "He is not the man that raised me, and I am glad for it."
Someone less foolish later prods more compassionately and she lets them know she was adopted and didn't properly meet Vader except in passing until she was nineteen.
"And then he tortured you."
"And then he tortured me, yes."
"Damn."
"Didn't even find out we were related until a few years later when he chopped my brother's arm off."
"You... wow."
"I know."
At least one exchange that is
L: You mean when you tortured me?
A: He did what.
V: I was not aware of our relation at that time.
L: Not the point! I am fully aware of your interrogation methods and I refuse to let you be the one to acquire the evidence for--
A: Wait no go back he tortured you?
L: Move on, please, we already have.
A: That means I'm... oh Force, I'm going to torture my own daughter what in the actual fu--
L: We're moving on.
(“I end up torturing my own daughter”
If Leia’s feeling especially spiteful I can see her saying “you mutilate your own son too”)
Concept: Leia is very free with traumatizing details of her past re:Vader and Anakin thinks that it sucks but doesn’t think much of it bc Sith.
And then some time later he finds out...
(I love characters who use the traumatizing details of their past to shut down conversations.)
It's such a wonderfully horrifying concept for him to try to awkwardly comfort this girl he kind of knows because having a Sith for a dad sounds like it would suck and Leia seems nice, even if she's kind of weird and uncomfortable around Anakin, but he saw her flinch around a few other tall people wearing black robes the way she stiffens around Vader so maybe it's just that!
It is not.
Vader does get a significant amount of medical treatment. Including a bunch of "holy shit, that's a lot of drugs" and similar. There is so much lightning damage.
hnnng I'm just really in love with the image of Tiny Tiny Leia sitting behind a desk for some fancy negotiation, the picture of professionalism, while Vader just stands behind her shoulder, looming, glaring expressionless death at whoever came to speak with his baby girl.
Not that he would call her that, because she'd just hate him more and he's really not sure how to fix that problem, other than doing whatever she asks with no complaints and hoping she appreciates it.
Vader: [looks at children wandering by, has complicated emotions]
Leia, tired of his shit: What now?
Vader: I killed them, once.
Leia, closing her eyes and taking a deep breath: And you're not going to do that again. No killing children.
Vader: I know that.
Leia: Great. I am... regretting asking. I am so very much regretting asking.
I do really like the idea of someone asking Leia once if she wants Jedi training and she says, no, actually, she's fully aware of the fact that she's angry little ball of hate sometimes, especially towards her bio father, and she'd like to refrain from putting herself in a position where she knows enough about the Force to Fall.
She wouldn't Fall.
But it does make people shut up.

✨ COLORING GIFS FOR RAINBOW SETS ✨
hello!! so this ask had just been sitting in my inbox for days, and since i finally got some free time (and an incentive) i thought i’d put together a general coloring tutorial - especially for those who are interested in rainbow sets, or just want to get freaky with their gifs, hehe.
photoshop: cc 2021, but tbh this tutorial is compatible with most versions of photoshop
for: beginners / anyone with a basic understanding of adjustment layers and brush tool (optional)
the tutorial will show how you can: (1) enhance colors in a neutral/washed out scene (2) change the overall color of a shot (3) make the colors bolder/stronger (4) convert the dominant color to another color
in other words: i rarely save my psds so this is what we’re stuck with
1.
usually, when i’m making a color set, the first thing i do is open the hues/saturation layer and pull the saturation to a 100. this gives me a pretty good idea of the colour palette i can work with. and since this shot is more on the dark side, i brightened the gif a bit, and then moved saturation to a 100. this is what i get:
now that i know the dominant colour is yellow, i can drag the saturation back to 0 and start working on the actual coloring! i go to curves, and brighten the gif a little. most of the time, the white and black points (the first and the third inkdropper) does wonders in color correcting your gif. buut, marking the white point of for this gif would remove what little yellow we have, so i just did a manual adjustment until i was happy with the result.
(since he’s a poc, i used a brush tool at 35% capacity over his face on the curves layer mask. it’s soft, and barely noticeable, but it stopped him from looking lighter, which would become a problem once we move on to the vibrance layers. basically, the lighter the subject, the more susceptible it is to being affected by color enhancing layers.)
next, i go to the yellow hue/saturation option, and increase yellow saturation to 50. i usually don’t do this much, but the yellows are very very light in this scene, so we’re enhancing the colors wherever we can. i also lowered the intensity of the reds using these settings:
the reason i’m reducing red saturation is because - remember the dominant color on his face was red/yellow? - i don’t want my vibrance layers to end up reddening his skin too much. we already tackled a portion of this when we used the brush tool with curves, but this just ensures that the final product doesn’t have his skin looking too yellowy/funny, hehe. this is my gif after the saturation settings:
honestly, the difference is minimal, but now we have an actual color to work with. now it’s just a matter of enhancing that color. at this point, his skin may also look washed out, but the color will return once we get started with the vibrance/color layers.
now, i open the vibrance layer, and - this is always dependent on the gif, btw - drag the sliders around until the colors are bolder. this is my gif now:
the yellows are much more evident now, and there’s a bit more color in his face - so yay! at this stage there’s really no need for selective coloring - so i’ll just add a brightness layer and another vibrance layer:
and voila!! mans lookin good
2.
changing the overall color of the gif is a fairly easy process. i think one thing to look out for is if there are people/a lot of skin that would end up being affected by the coloring – unless there’s minimal movement that you can use a brush tool for.
loki is more or less a silhouette in this shot, and all i’d need to do would be increase the contrast between him and the fog, and slap on a color. this can be done one of three ways: selective coloring, color balance, and gradient map. i’ll be using selective coloring here because i felt that worked best and it’s also an adjustment layer i’m most comfortable with.
enhancing the contrast comes first, and since the brightness/contrast layer didn’t work as well as i’d hoped, i opened up the exposure layer and put in these settings:
and i get this:
now that loki is much more prominent against the fog, we can move on to the coloring. since i want it to be pink, i’m gonna open the neutral selective coloring, and use these settings:
just make sure your selective coloring is on “absolute” because it colors your gif independent of the original gif and makes your colors more strong, whereas ‘relative’ colors your gif relative to the original gif – which doesn’t work all that well for color sets. (read: makes it look ugly)
i got the color, but methinks its still a little too dull, so i’ll add a brightness/contrast layer to make the color pop
and done!!
3.
animation gifs are much more easier to color because the colours are easily isolated, which is just chefs kiss when you use selective coloring. for this one, i just want to enhance the blues / reds, and remove the magenta tone so that the colours are more vivid. first, i increase the contrast:
it’s sharpened the colors a bit, and reduced the dullness:
now, because i want to enhance the blues/reds, and reduce the magenta, i’m going to use these settings in my selective coloring layer:
i didn’t want to make the red too bright, since red has an annoying tendency to pixelate, and lowered the magentas just enough so that the three of them still have a bit of color on their face. now the blues:
now that that’s done, all we need is to brighten up the gif. i’ll use curves for this:
i selected my white point (the white inkdropper) from the white part on baymax’s face (which i just realized makes no sense bc his entire face is white) which immediately brightened up the gif and erased the excess magenta.
if you want, you could still make it brighter by selecting your white point a little towards the shadows in baymax’s face - but methinks this gif looks fine by itself ehehe
4.
this one will be fairly easy - especially for a shot like this where it’s just blues and black - and will only require selective color and some brightness layers. so, i want to make this a violet gif. the very first thing i’ll do is open up selective coloring and enhance the blues:
idk if this is a thing others do djsajskl i feel like they do, but i do this because i’ve always found it easier to do color convert when the colors are enhanced - so, the more enhanced my blues are, the easier it is to convert to violet. this is what i have now:
now it’s time for violet!!! yee!!!
i increased the magenta in the whites because the highlights in the cloud were looking VERY white, and would end up looking very weird once i increased brightness. so this is just for…. consistency
now we can get on with brightening!! i open up the brightness/contrast layer and use these settings:
and another curves layer, where i’ve intense-ified the dark parts (the grey slider is at input: 27) and lightened the rest (the white slider is at input: 220)
(i just feel like it makes the coloring look crispy)
and tada!!!
