Melina thoughts of mine:
1) she could be Marika's daughter much the same way Millicent is Malenia's. Both parents are empyreans who's children are human sized
2) I can't think of any reason why she couldn't be both Marika's child and the GEQ, it definitely seems like the conflict would be very consistent with Marika/golden order's history of betrayal and alienation of family/ allies
3) what if the ranni/Melina connection is less siblings and more of a Radagon/Marika situation.
4) the frenzy ending is the only time we see her physically interact with anything, this coincides with the destruction of the erdtree/torrents whistle, which I think implies that she was bound (sealed away as punishment perhaps?) to 1 of them, most likely the tree imo
Don't really have a grand theory myself yet, but I would love to hear your thoughts on each of those ideas
Ooooh, thank you for the ideas and the excuse to talk about Meli.
1) I'm 99,99% certain Melina is Marika's daughter. Both because of her dialogue and the fact that "Melina's internal name in the game files is "MaricaOfDaughter". (x <- trivia section of her wiki) The comparison with Millicent is something I never thought about, but a) it's brilliant and b) it makes even more sense. I am now 99,999% certain that Meli is Marika's daughter.
2) She could, but the reason why she is not the GEQ is how opposing their characters' motivations and actions are. The GEQ hunts gods and demigods, Melina wants to make you one. Also, following the default ending, you are made Marika's consort, restoring the order Marika had formed. The GEQ was Marika's nemesis, why would she want to restore Marika's order? Going by the descriptions of her followers (you know, the guys that casually wear the skin of their kills as clothes), the GEQ was one of the most ruthless and violent entities in the Lands Between. Melina is one of the most protective and kind characters we meet (based on how she treats Boc and the Mimic Tear from the cut-content, all her incantations when fighting, the fact that when dying she forms a small, healing tree to assist and protect you even with her final breath). ... If she was the GEQ, she wouldn't have need of us to travel. The GEQ still has followers loyal to her, why would she need a random Tarnished? Throw the whistle on one of her Apostles and just use them as a means to travel. If she was the GEQ, why are all her incantations Erdtree based (and healing instead of damaging) and not Black Flame?
Sidenote: the GEQ came to power maybe at the same time with Marika, and there's also the possibility that the GEQ was even older, maybe a Queen before Marika, serving a different Outer God..? Per the Godskin Noble Robe description: Nobles are the most ancient apostles who are said to have assimilated inhuman physiology. Not unlike the crucible, the Erdtree in its primordial form. (x) The GEQ could had been Marika's family, like a sister or a mother or something, but not a daughter.
3) I don't know... Maybe? They do seem opposites in the way Marika/Radagon are. And they do both have that freaking eye tattoo that I can never fit in any other theory. But at the same time, their goals do align in a way (contrary to Marika/Radagon's shenanigans). Melina wants to bring back death and a natural flow of life in the Lands ("This world is in dire need of repair… and Death…indiscriminate…"), and Ranni wants freedom for the creatures in the world (mainly freedom for herself, but she does extend it to everyone). I don't subscribe to them being one, but I think it's one of the most solid theories.
At any rate, I'm certain that they know and probably are in friendly terms with each other due to Melina (Torrent's "former" master) trusting Ranni with the Spirit Calling Bell.
4) Yeah... But also she is the one that gives you the whistle to call Torrent, which is a physical tool. Also, she beats the living hell out of Morgott when you summon her (sorry gramps). I don't think she can't interact with the world, she just can't move that far away from the Erdtree and Torrent.
(also times two, she holds your hand and if you are telling me that you can't actually feel it, I'm gonna riot >︿< )
I think she's bound to the Erdtree. And maybe the whistle is made from the the bark of the Erdtree, allowing her to "cheat" and move around as long as she has him..? Dunno.
~
I don't really have a all-encompassing theory either. The few points I have are that,
Melina is Marika's youngest daughter
Melina's goals aligns with Ranni's
Melina is kind and curious by nature
Melina wants to restore the natural circle of life that Marika broke by sealing the Rune of Death, which is why she calls for "Death…indiscriminate…"
I could probably write a better theory at some point, if y'all wanna read it. But me making a proper theory wasn't the ask, so Imma shut it for now. :P
Thank you for the ask!

Do you think Guts sees Femto/NGriff as separate from og human Griffith? During the Eclipse he seems more devastated than furious that Griffith made the sacrifice, but he almost always reacts to Femto/NGriff with some flavor of rage. If so, is he trying to compartmentalize? Like he doesn't want to sully his memory of his cough cough bff, the fully human Griffith, by associating him with the betrayal of the sacrifice? Is he only angry about the rape which was 100% Femto, but not the sacrifice????
Yeah that's definitely my take, at least until the Hill of Swords, and probably to an extent after that. He tells Rickert, "That's not the Griffith you know anymore," which indicates that he does see Femto as a personality change, not just as Griffith+superpowers, and he really, really wanted NeoGriffith to express remorse and pay attention to him.
It's also notable imo that in his moments of rage he almost always pictures Femto as the mask without a face beneath it, eg:
Tumblr media
The exceptions, as far as I recall, being moments where he's feeling more mixed feelings or identifying with Femto wrt the temptation of becoming a monster, eg chapter 130, or the war declaration in chapter 91.
I get into Guts' feelings towards Femto/NGriff with a lot more depth and examples here if you're interested.
And yeah it kinda seems like that's the entire reason Miura added the rape lol, because Guts wasn't angry before that. He was regretful, sad, but not outraged. Which is funny to me because I do think that the sacrifice should've been enough on its own to make Guts vow revenge, considering the sacrifice is a symbolic repeat of his childhood trauma, but I can't deny that I love the homoeroticism inherent to Guts not getting angry until Femto demonstrated how evil he now is.
And while I suppose to be fair he never fully hated Gambino for being sold to Donovan either, he did feel betrayed enough to lash out and kill him impulsively when he found out, so I feel like that would be a solid comparison to his feelings towards Femto/Ngriff. Regret buried underneath rage and betrayal.
Thanks for the ask!

A point you made the other day about ballistic vs laser/plasma/pulse got me really thinking.
In all honesty, ballistic tech has really kinda reached its apex unless we move into CT ammo, caseless ammo or railguns.
I mean, obviously it holds its merits. But other-than solid munitions imo have one massive advantage. Sound or Recoil. There should be virtually none, theres no explosion, just energy.
Playing the devils advocate, I could see there being key, unique issues. Like laser not doing well against hard targets and vice versa with pulse/plasma.
That last bit is mostly me theorizing, but I'm sure you have some more grounded opinions.
Yeah, solid munitions have advantages in ease and cost of manufacture (particularly in a future scenario where 3D-printing, automated sintering/fabrication, or automatic forging/molding technologies are ubiquitous) and they're of all foreseeable options the best at penetrating rain, dust, and vegetation on a battlefield. Futuristic options are likely either going to be electrically/magnetically propelled, or possibly use caseless or polymer-cased ammunition; depends on the military in question's preference of more power demands vs. chemical processing demands. It'll retain a niche but not a universal monopoly.
Rocket-assisted munitions (I envision something like a gyrojet with a two-stage motor to alleviate the problems the historical gyrojet ran into) have advantages in very low recoil relative to energy-on-target, along with the capability delivering specialized payloads easily (largely AP, HE and incendiary). The complexity and cost/ time-to-fabricate of ammunition would largely consign them to smaller-scale uses ranging from SF to private security groups, despite the weapons themselves being theoretically quite cheap due to low stress on components and minimal moving parts required.
Energy weapons come in two main flavors; both predicated on the conceit that we'll solve the power storage demands enough to make them field-expedient:
Lasers (along with masers and other focused radiation/ directed energy weapons) are of course extremely accurate, with functionally nonexistent recoil and an effective range of the literal horizon. Downsides include high vulnerability to atmospheric conditions and debris refracting or attenuating the ray, along with a laser powerful enough that a pulse is effective on target also ionizing the atmosphere it passes through, pinpointing the shooter's location and posing a hazard to eyesight of the shooter themselves. Power demands are also extremely inefficient in comparison to effect on target; while this is alleviated by notional futuristic generators/field reactors, it's still a factor. Even so, lasers are logistically extremely friendly as they require power and no material save any replacement/maintenance components for the weapon itself. Armor poses a problem, but effect on a softer target would be extreme and grizzly, so how widespread these would be is largely dependent on how widespread ammo is
Plasma (specifically, magnetically self-contained plasmoid projectiles) is actually no longer a pure sci-fi concept, but the lab-tested ones thus far have a range measured in fractions of an inch. For the sake of discussion, we'll work under the conceit that this can and will be extended to combat-effective ranges. Even so, you're left with the problem that a plasma weapon would have a short effective range, with its effect on target inversely proportional to distance from the shooter, as it's hemorrhaging energy the entire time it's in flight--hemorrhaging so much energy, in fact, that the shooter likely requires protective gear to prevent permanent blindness and serious flash-burns, as even our notional improved magnetic containment tricks aren't likely to change the properties of plasma itself. That said, these weapons would have extreme effect on anything it hits, threatening even armored vehicles and fortified positions--and, unfortunately, virtually no effect on anything more than a few inches behind what it hits, as once the magnetic containment is broken, the plasma disperses rapidly. Armored infantry and armored vehicles are severely damaged, an unarmored infantryman who happened to have a stray branch 2 meters in front of him is all but untouched. So it would take careful planning and positioning, but the ability of what we'll assume to be an infantry carbine-sized repeating firearm to threaten armored vehicles and risk mobility kills on conventional tanks would still rattle the cages of both doctrine and tactical planning

Having played a couple hours of Rune Factory 5 here's some thoughts:
The shift from 2D(adjacent) to 3D is always difficult and RF5 has its fair share of troubles in relation to that, namely rough framerates every now and then. I barely notice them anymore though
It could have used a little more visual fine-tuning I think. Everything is a tad too saturated I think, it doesn't look bad per se, just a little overwhelming! Also, in comparison to the other games there's a very noticeable shift to cooler colour shades. And I don't really vibe with the purple of the menu.
Also the pink/blue genderbased color distinction in the player characters/the SEED ranger uniforms is just ugly imo. The new player outfits don't look "normal" in their surroundings. I don't like the whole blue/pink gender clothing thing to begin with and I'm a little mad that our Protagonist doesn't have a unique outfit that's displayed in dialouges.
Speaking of dialogues: They keep the facial expressions on the character sprites while also trying to utilize the 3D models while talking. This results in long pauses while a character turns their head (and glitches while looking at another person). Additionally, due to longer loading times, you have to wait a couple seconds before the sprites are displayed but voicelines are played regardless. So yeah you could sum up the dialouges as unoptimized and badly paced due to the stuff above
Also the writing seems to be worse than in 4? Rune Factory was never too good in terms of dialogues. 1 had real solid lines and interactions but barely amy variety. 2 had more variety jut the dialouge lacked a little depth. 3, I don't remember too much of 3 but I feel lile it was similar to 2 in terms of dialog. 4 did a really good job I think, the character interactions really touched me,they utilized the almost visual novel style textbox very well! 5, seems to have trouble doing that. this probably is connected to the technical issues above, but also dialog is waaayyy shorter here than in 4 and or 3? But there were only a few longer character interactions so far and I didn't get to know any of the characters too well just yet.
tits. there's ridiculous amounts of boobage in RF5, something rather atypical for Rune Factory.
This will be continued in a reblog.

catte, do you use thoma as a shielder? cos i’ve been playing him and his shield isn’t really that…strong? or do you have any tips to make him stronger haha i’m stumped honestly
Over the past few days, I've mainly been testing damage-dealing roles on him (currently im using him as a main phys dps bc pretty animations go brrr) tho I've tried out his shield a little bit!!
im putting this under the cut bc I usually end up rambling when it comes to character builds and team comps akjsndas I'm sorry in advanced if it's a bit too much info HAHA feel free to follow up if you have questions or smthn akjsdnas <333
ok so yeah, I'm ngl the shield from his E alone is, like, alright right? like it does its job in keeping you shielded and stuff. All things considered, in terms of base damage absorption, his shield is I think stronger or just as strong as Diona's, though it's a bit shorter in duration (in comparison to her max-length shield.) Obvi if you're comparing his shield to Zhongli's shield–– well, basically no other shield in the game is as strong as Zhongli's E HAHAHA
However, an important thing to remember is that Thoma's shield works a little differently from Diona's and Zhongli's in the sense that both his E and his Q grant him a blazing barrier (his shield) and that his main potential as a shielder comes out when you learn how to time his rotations just right to keep uptime on that shield. Because his blazing barriers refresh their duration and their remaining damage absorption get stacked when he gains a new shield (whether it be through his burst or his skill) it's important to remember the timing of these when you play him as a shielder. Not to mention this shield refresh also increases your shield strength with his passive. So his shield is one that benefits mainly from being up constantly, since that increases its damage absorption. (side note tho but do remember that his Q shield's solo dmg absorption is lower than his E soo––)
So for a shield-centric thoma you're going to want to start off with his E to gain the shield, then refresh and reinforce it with his Q, and then use his E again to refresh the shield again when it's off cooldown, then rinse and repeat the cycle. It's... a bit of a tight rotation, given his long cooldowns and the eight second durations for his shields, but from what I've been trying out that's, like, one of the more effective ways to play him as a shielder. (made a little easier by his cons but, like, assuming I'm talking abt a c0, it's doable but it's a tight rotation imo.)
Ok, so since his burst is a really big part of his kit, and it's energy cost is fucking insane at 80, and as a shielder, you're not going to be putting him on-field for very long (and his e doesn't give him a lot of energy and also has a fucking insane ass cooldown) in order to keep his Q usable as soon as its off it's cooldown, you're going to need energy recharge on this lad. And I mean motherfucking energy recharge. As an on-field DPS, i mainly play him with upwards of 180 ER, which is okay because he's catching the particles himself, but when you play him off-field he's gonna need more. Like, 200 and up more, depending on your own playstyle, if he's C4 or not (bc of the 15 energy refund) the weapon you use on him and his team comp. Ive tried him on a full HP build w/ black tassel right and although it strengthens his shield pretty well, if you're using him primarily as a shielder the lack of ER is going to fuck you up and leave your team unshielded for several seconds. So you also want to build ER on him as much as you do with HP, in order to make the most out of that 'shield refresh' mechanic he's got going on. Also, like, 4pcs tenacity isn't super viable on him due to his E skill cooldown. As far as i'm aware, 4pcs Noblesse is his best in slot at the moment if you don't already have someone who uses it on your team. But in a pinch, Tenacity + Emblem is pretty solid too I think (in theory–– I don't have any good tenacity pieces to try out HAHA) since it helps with the ER and with the damage absorption.
That's abt all I know for a shield-focused Thoma tho–– do keep in mind I haven't been playing him much as a shield bot bc from the start i've always intended to make him a dps unit, so I'm not sure how accurate my own observations are, so take this with a grain of salt !! I recommend looking through other resources too, such as yt. Sorry if it's a little long or if i didn't explain correctly akjsdsa Hope it helps out somehow though! <333

care to spare more on the twilight meets sebchal idea? i‘m buzzing with excitement right now. the more i think about it the more comparisons i see 🥺
Oh man, I don't even know. I just occasionally get hit with like... nostalgia for the aesthetics and the music, y'know? Plus, I've been casually re-watching the movies every few nights so yeah I guess it's been rattling around my head, lol. But it's not like I have a solid plan or plot for a fic or anything. I mean I kind of did a while back but it's a more loose interpretation that doesn't faithfully follow the plot and isn't set in high school in America, lmao. Maybe at some point I'll go back to my WIPs and try to bang out a scene or two from that AU. It is NaNo after all...
The problem is, like...I genuinely can't decide which of them would be the vampire in this scenario? I could see it working both ways. I mean Charles is extraordinarily handsome, has (by own admission) "yellow eyes", drives a Ferrari, speaks several languages, plays the piano, is rich, impossibly fast and strong, etc. Reading the book and seeing how Bella describes Edward you're like "well lol he's not real people like that don't exist." And then you look at Charles and you realise SMeyer was ahead of her time and she knew he'd be torturing all of us on the regular sjdjef
But at the same time, Seb has the life experience and knowledge of someone who's lived, well, a really long existence. I can see him struggling to accept what he is/his nature (especially if he was, like, a medical emergency "change" or something and couldn't really make an informed choice because someone made it for him) given what we know of him and his outlook on life in general. I'm pretty sure there's an interview somewhere where he gets asked if he'd choose to be immortal or something and he says no because living life and making mistakes and learning from them and changing and shaping your life is what makes it worth living for him. So I think if he'd been changed (even closer to/at 30 and not very young like most of the Cullens) he'd have some angst about it and maybe a "rebellious phase" (think RB era) in his first few years as a newborn before maturing and kind of...trying to give his new existence some sort of meaning beyond just feeding. Imo he'd adopt a Carlisle-like approach and use the infinite time at his disposal to learn, gain knowledge, experience, better himself, meet other vampires, travel, help humans/the community, etc. I think he'd also be one of the first to convert to vampiric vegetarianism. You could even keep the mind reading aspect and have only Charles be immune to Seb's gift. Or he could be a "giftless" vampire.
So yeah given what we know of Seb I can't see him romanticizing immortality, let alone vampirism, and being all eager to be bitten and changed the way Bella was. If he were the human in this scenario and he fell for Charles I think he'd choose to stay human and just... have a long, happy life with Charles and his farm and his chickens and his whatever else, and then let nature take its course. Charles would angst about not having enough time with Seb (kinda canon) but would also try to understand his point of view and respect his wishes, even if it tore him up to eventually have to lose him.
Side note: in the context of Ferrari it cracks me up that the Big Bad ancient vampires that are responsible for maintaining law and order in the vampire world are based out of Italy, lmfao. Could also be the FIA and how they oversee everything. Michael Masi as Aro, anyone? ajsdjfed

Hi Clyde 👋🏻 So Ive been watching as your response posts come thru about RWBY and you obviously know alot about it. As someone who knows nothing at all about it, I was wondering if you could explain it to me. Supernatural I get. Jupiter Ascending I get. Even that Jar Jar Binks post floating around Tumblr (if you havent seen it yet, it’s probably a good thing) I get, but RWBY im still sort of having trouble getting up the interest to watch. Is it worth it?
Hello! I'm definitely answering asks in a timely fashion. Watch me go! 😅
Ah, is RWBY worth it. That there is the million dollar question. Not to give a copout answer, but I really think it depends on what you're looking to get out of the show. Our beloved JA and SPN are great comparisons because they're both extremes too. They're doing something really interesting that succeeds in captivating its audience... and then, arguably, faceplant when it comes to a lot of basic writing expectations. SPN far more-so than JA imo, just due to being a 15 season show vs. a 2 hour movie. Though not quite of the same caliber, RWBY has a lot of the same whimsy and creativity. A sort of, "Go with the flow not because it necessarily makes sense, but because it's fun." Or, as the RWBY fandom puts it, everything follows the "Rule of Cool." If you like JA's awkwardly delivered "I love dogs" you may also like the awkwardness of Ruby eating cookies by having them disappear when they approach her face. The self-awareness that RWBY had in the beginning — we're a low budget webseries created for the fun of it with lots of ridiculous gags and flashy action — feels, to me, similar to the self-awareness of JA: "We're a film that's going to take a 13yo girl's fantasies very seriously, right up through getting an angel-wolf-alien as a boyfriend." There's even a lot to be said for RWBY's similar motivations: a girl power story, a focus on the action (with Monty's fantastic choreography), meant to be progressive in particular ways, etc.
Personally, I really love the first three Volumes of RWBY. They're ridiculous, badly animated at times, and mishandle a racism allegory like whoa... but they've got a lot of heart. They're fun. They're enjoyable in that "Turn your brain off" manner. The basic premise is that a girl with silver eyes gets into a Huntsmen Academy two years early — a school that trains young adults to battle the monsters that populate their world. She's set up as the pure hearted hero with the mysterious power via her eye color. She gains a team of three other girls who must learn to work together as they navigate school and a coming war. Everyone has crazy outfits, crazier weapons, and at one point there's an epic food fight battle that I've watched on Youtube too many times. It's playful and has just enough worldbuilding to spark the imagination; just enough solid characterization to get you to fall in love with the cast. If it were the summer of 2016 I'd recommend RWBY wholeheartedly as the webseries equivalent of a beach read.
The problem is that things #happened at the end of Volume 3. No spoilers, but suffice to say things got intense during that finale, thrusting the show into a very different era. Suddenly, the show wanted to take itself seriously in a way it never had before... so many in the fandom, such as myself, started taking it more seriously too. We had higher expectations for the show since the show itself was egging those expectations on, tackling sensitive material and talking up the impact of their work. Yet, sadly, these expectations weren't met, with the problems becoming more pronounced with each new Volume. The retconning added up. Certain characters were done dirty. The allegories got really offensive. RWBY's idea of feminism became warped. We've got a ship that many consider queerbaiting at this point. Morals are all over the place and there's no longer a consistent message to the show... it's a lot. The sort of "It's a lot" that we might say about SPN too. Fans are right to point out the laundry list of bad writing choices and offensive content strewn across SPN's 15 seasons. Fans are also right to point out the many aspects that kept its audience hooked despite all that. Same with RWBY. Me? I think RWBY is a very badly written show now... but I enjoyed it enough, for long enough, that I'm still invested enough to see it through. Meanwhile, others don't see anything wrong with the writing at all. They've hailed the last two Volumes as the best to date, with even better work to come. There's a pretty intense split between those who critique the show and those who insist on its near perfection.
So I suppose I'd recommend it, just because I'm not confident in giving a definitive "Lol yeah this is trash" condemnation. Not just because there were things I did (and at times still do) love about RWBY, but because my interpretation, quite obviously, is subjective. I can't ignore that those of us who critique the show are the minority. So statistically, if RWBY ends up being your thing, you're probably more likely to enjoy all that the show has produced thus far — within reason — than you are to have a falling out with it. I think overall there's enough good in RWBY to give it a shot, especially when, depending on how you approach your shows, that good might still be there for you 8 Volumes later. Just go in knowing that, if you enjoy the first 3 Volumes, you might be severely disappointed down the line.
The other upside though? The initial episodes are very short! So you can try a couple out without giving RWBY too much of a time investment.
(Also, side note, but WHAT Jar Jar Binks post?? Oh god I'm scared lol)

So, coming off of Metroid Dread, I was inspired to go back to revisit the series roots. I never actually beat the original Metroid before. I played it a bunch when I was little, but I was too young for it, never really got anywhere or did much. Didn't help that I've always had a terrible head for directions, and the original game doesn't have an in game map. Going back to it now, the only area I had trouble navigating was Norfair, which is a bit of a maze. Coming back as an adult I was actually able to appreciate how kindly Brinstar eases you into the game, with it's relatively few columns and rows, each conveniently color coded.
I probably could have managed better if I was a bit older, but by the time I was old enough for it Super Metroid was out, eclipsing the original altogether, as it did with much of the public consciousness since it was one of those SNES sequels that was sort of a soft reboot, just doing the same concept as an NES original only better.
But yeah, I did play the original a lot when I was little, and it left a really strong impression in my mind. It just felt so completely different from everything else. Kraid's lair in particular, especially its theme music, really creeped me out in a way that was somehow also really intriguing. Going back to the game now, with the benefit of save states, I can say that the thing that really held me back as a kid - even more than the lack of a map - is the agonizingly slow process of refilling your energy & missiles when you get low. Every time you die you respawn at the start of the current area, but with 30 health and no missiles. Even after picking up just a couple energy tanks and a few missiles, the process of getting back to healthy if you die, or even if you are brought to low health and survive, can take like 10 solid minutes of farming bugs out of tubes. It's obnoxious.
I only even got through the game now by abusing save states so I only had to do that a couple times. By the end of the game I had 700 health and 250 missiles, and you can only recharge that 5 health or 2 missiles at a time from enemy drops, and enemies only drop anything at all like half the time. I died like half a dozen times on the way to Mother Brain, and another half dozen against Mother Brain herself, and if I had had to spend like 10 to 15 minutes farming resources instead of just loading a state each time, I absolutely would have quit before beating her.
That aside, though, it really is a neat game worth looking back at. Particularly in terms of that 'experience of exploration' bit I talked about before. Items and upgrades aren't spread out over an expected sequence or carefully doled out as rewards for tricky gameplay puzzles, they're just out there in the world. Hidden items are actually hidden - behind illusionary walls or acid pits, or rooms only accessible through breakable blocks in the floor or ceiling.
When I got the high hump, or the varia suit, it felt like a Discovery. By comparison, Most of the abilities in Metroid Dread (or Zero Mission & Fusion, which I played in the run up to Dread's Release)? Abilities you typically get after defeating a boss on a directed progression path? They don't really feel like discoveries, instead they feel like rewards. Rewards are still fun and feel good to get, so that's not inherently a change for the worse, but while it's a subtle difference, imo it's still a pretty important one.
Metroid IS still clunky as hell, with twice the jank. Movement isn't great, rooms are repeated over and over, and it sorely needed a faster way to refill your health and ammo. But if you can get past all that, yeah, it's worth revisiting. You can really feel the roots of the genre, particularly in how the high jump boots and ice beam open up otherwise inaccessible paths. And as much as the genre has grown, there's also elements that were strong in this initial outing that were subsequently lost along the way, and maybe deserve to be dusted off & given another look.
If you do, and you're not concerned with 'original experience', there are romhacks that address some of the more troublesome aspects, in particular adding a map to the pause screen and a save feature that refills health so you don't have to do farm tube bugs every time you restart or die. Honestly, I don't think this obscures the great parts of the experience, so if you're curious about the original game but are worried about it's off-putting nature, I'd definitely recommend trying something like this: romhacking.net/hacks/1186/
Or maybe this if you want some a bundle of aesthetic updates and some slightly revamped boss fights while you're at it: romhacking.net/hacks/1988/
I haven't personally tried either of those hacks yet, but they both seem to be worth looking at if you're curious about the original metroid but want a somewhat a slightly more refined presentation and some QoL fixes.
Unfortunately the official remake, Zero Mission for the GBA, is essentially a completely different game, much more derived in its design. Zero Mission is a good game and a great introduction to the 2d platform Metroidvania genre and the Metroid series in particular. But in re-imagining the original from the ground up it looses a lot of NES Metroid's distinguishing features, both good and bad, so it's kind of useless if you're specifically trying to examine the origin and early evolution of the franchise.

omg hi anon i dont know if you know less than i do but you probably dont i know like nothing im just here LOL youre good and fair warning for my arthurian mutuals or anyone else who reads this really this is going to be my own personal interpretation and not anything you should take as solid fact or analysis LOL also preface im not going to talk ab the prose lancelot here cause i havent read it and i feel weird talking about things i havent read LOL
anyways i dont think that medieval works where kay gets humiliated or embarassed (which uh. is a lot of them lol) are really trying to say something about how they think kay is a bad person/awful character etc etc i think mostly he’s there for like. some form of comic relief? idk. i think he is certainly a punching bag character most of the time but in an affectionate way, while he does get pummeled a lot its not because the author is trying to condemn him for his actions because they view him as a bad person who needs to be punished its typically to be a. a foil for the mc (typically gawaine) so that their deeds look even greater in comparison (and even that isnt like..a constant imo like in the perilous graveyard kay is a foil to gawaine but its to rag on gawaines inaction and faults i digress) and b. said gag character. also kay has a lot of immunity in the texts lol, no matter what he does and how much he does suffer he does...always get out of it fine no matter what happens to him (see: him getting ragged on by arthur all the time esp in the dutch stuff but he never dies or is that severely harmed or anything even though he most probably should have) even on like..a grander arthurian ‘’canon’’ scale kay is almost always one of the characters to survive the strife of camlann and the fall of camelot so like. yeah. thisll make sense when i talk about lancelot and i will talk about him right now
anyways i think while lancelot is the hero of many romances and literature and who typically gets a more in depth look at his character than kay (but i also think kay one of the few arthurian characters with deeper characterization throughout multiple texts) i think that most of the time he is condemned by the authors even if he isnt said to be explicitly wrong in the text...like lancelot DOES commit many transgressions, far more serious transgressions than kay (while i do think that you are supposed to view knight of the cart as satiricalish/comical in genre awareness you know what i mean adultery is not the same as like cursing people out and then getting the shit beat out of you for doing that) and he DOES get ragged on by the authors for this even if he isnt ragged on in the text itself. like even chretien de troyes, the creator of lancelot (sidenote: do NOT debate me on who came up with lancelot it was de troyes it was him. this does not make lancelot not a valid arthurian character hes just a guy.) did not like him and while knight of the cart textually presents lancelot as a hero the author is condemning lancelot personally and metatextually in a way the author does not condemn kay
and unlike kay, lancelot DOES suffer for these actions in the text, hes not immune in the same way kay is. in the post vulgate cycle and things based off it which i have actually read like le morte he cannot achieve the holy grail, him and guinevere’s affair (i will put this in big air quotes cause i actually have a lot of opinions on this but i will. keep them out sigh. anyways while i do think the authors of many medieval texts were not personally fond of lancelot i, phineas, am and i find his actions reasonable but this isnt phineasland so i digress) and his actions after the discovery of said affair ie killing all those people is what leads to the fall of camelot and the destruction of arthurs court. and lancelot is doomed to a life of mourning and repentance in the monastery, which i also think is a notable difference between him and kay in medieval texts: lancelot is typically forced to repent. kay is not.
TLDR: while kay is typically ragged on and humiliated in medieval works more often, my opinion is that lancelot is condemned metatextually by the author and audience in a way kay is not. kay has a sort of immunity for his actions that lancelot (and to be fair, most of the characters in the story) do not.
anyways to answer your note about the victorians cause imo they’re both two different things to talk about uhhh i really don’t get the vibe that the victorians disliked lancelot (im not really that deep into victorian stuff yet forgive me haha)! in fact, from what ive read and seen so far irt to art it seems to me like they actually were fond of him lol maybe even more than poor old chretien de troyes. (see: richard hovey, ea robinson, william morris all authors that seemed to write about lancelot often and really delved into and explored his character in depth, many times him as a sort of tragique hero)
i think if the victorians had a conspiracy against any character it would be gawaine, he is very much reduced in importance imo and i think that DOES contribute to the wider western cultural perception of him nowadays ie that he isnt really that important/an archaic/minor character that only shows up in like. one text and we all know which text that is.
to be fair i think the wider western cultural perception of lancelot is just like. medieval lit gawaine but blonde LOL anyways i dont want this to become a post about gawaine but yeah i think that from the victorian stuff ive read about lancelot they seemed to really get into him as a character and produce a lot of content for him (see, all the artworks he and gwen gets in comparison to other arthurian characters) so unless ive just been misinterpreting everything ive read wrong idk about most of them really disliking him, or even disliking him in the same way the medieval authors did.
TDLR: i want to stan lancelot the same way that william morris stanned lancelot i want to depose him as the no. 1 lancelot fan
anyways thank you for sending me this ask!!!! i got to think a little out of my gawaine box cause i usually dont focus on lancelot or kay and im glad i got to flesh out my feelings on their characters more cause of this

“homestuck-and-the-monomyth: Yeah, we wildly disagree there. I’ll give you that Book 2 mostly kept its shit together, but then…that’s really easy to do when you’re not doing anything. Call it personal preference but I just absolutely hate the Nifl royals, there’s just so little going on with any of them and they don’t even have the courtesy to kill Fjorm off like was supposed to happen. Muspell is better by virtue of having the flame sisters and Helbindi, but they get so little time as compared to Surtr.
I give Book 3 way more credit for turning Alfonse from a mediocre ally into a fascinating antagonist in Lif, even if that doesn’t leave them much time to resolve Hel and Eir. And even then the pair of them start so much more interesting than Fjorm and Surtr that they don’t need as much room to grow comparatively (not that Fjorm and Surtr really grow either).
Book 4…yeah, they kinda get up their own ass a bit with the Inception plotline, and I’ll never forgive them for pussying out of actually killing Alfonse. But I’d disagree that none of the villains get any time to stand out. Freyja and Triandra (especially Triandra) are two of the best villains we’ve seen in FEH imo.
Book 5 has definitely fallen from there. Reginn and Fafnir both suck and the jaunt to Jotunheimr seemed inconsequential at best, although I have to give Dagr credit for being really fucking funny. At this point it’s just a question of whether whatever Otr and Eitri are hiding is interesting enough that they can stick the landing.”
Lif at least has something, but I feel like they fucked up Eir so bad that it all evens out to “Not that great,” especially since Hel and Thrasir get nothing at all.  Book 4 tried to do things with Freyja but ultimately never really got to do it well.  They tried to make her complex, between her revenge on mortals and taking over the dream world but actually caring about Triandra and Plumeria and realizing she’s alone once they fall, but it never amounts to much.  Just like everything else that book.  And personally Triandra’s story didn’t do much for me.  Like it’s solid, definitely one of the better ones, but better than Laegjarn and Helbindi overall?  I don’t think I’d agree.
I cannot stand the cast of Book 5.  It’s a more interesting plot, in that it has managed to surprise me with some of the twists and turns, but I don’t really care about anyone involved which severely holds it back.  That’s what I think Book 2 did better for me: I gave a shit.  I like Fjorm.  I have no problem with anything going on in her story.  Yes, even the “Should have died” thing, because ultimately her condition was just “Dies young” not “dies immediately.”  We have no sense of how much time passes within FEH’s continuity, and even if it’s 1:1 with the real world that’s only like three years, which is perfectly reasonable for her to hang on for.  I wish they’d reference it more in, say, Forging Bonds stuff, but it’s ultimately fine, and having the Ice Princess be driven by revenge and putting Surtr in the ground?  That’s the kind of stuff that makes Leif stand out, and I appreciate it.  Hrid and Ylgr aren’t quite as engaging, but I wouldn’t say they’re any worse than Zacharias, who we do have a handle on but hasn’t really done much.  Muspell carries because of how well they set up Helbindi and Laegjarn, but Laevatein gets a good amount of development by connection to her sister.  Maybe they could have gotten more time, but the time they got handled them well and developed a really solid character, as opposed to having a much longer story section and ending on “It literally does not matter, and half of it wasn’t even real!”
Gunnthra I fully admit to just a character preference.  She’s super pretty and has ice and dream powers, that’s fucking cool.
The thing is that...with the comparison to Hel and Eir starting off more interesting, I think their problem is that Eir is supposed to develop, and her development sucks.  But not everyone necessarily needs to grow.  Surtr exists to just be the big evil guy to overcome.  Fjorm exists on a path to kill Surtr to end the invasion of her country.  There doesn’t need to be a big twist or change in their character.  Fjorm’s story is more about seeing how far she goes, and ultimately I do think the pact shortening her lifespan is handled well.  Comparatively, Eir’s been working under Hel, who is all about the cruelty of death, but was supposed to be the opposite perspective: a merciful death.  And instead they completely undermine that to focus on “Actually she’s from the Life Dragon kingdom and is all about Life and good things and not about death at all!”  Which fucking blows, and removes any interesting connection the two had from that thematic sense.  Sure, we still have the whole abused child thing, but Nino already did that better.  Eir is one of the few OCs who actually backpedals in how interesting she is, and I’m starting to regret putting her so high on the tier list at all.

A Character With Chronic Running Away Issues Paired with a Character With Abandonment Issues????
For those who have seen my reblogs with RWBY and A:TLA, you all know that I adore Bumbleby but despise Kataa/ng, even though both pairings have one character with chronic running away issues and the other has abandonment issues.
GET READY FOR THE META NO ONE ASKED FOR
So why do I support one and not the other? (warning: I am not friendly to Kat@ang here)
Well...it’s because they’re in way different ballparks. Kataan/g happens when both are still 12/13 and 14/15, while Blake and Yang are about 19 by Volume 7. So for starters, there’s a massive maturity gap that almost shoots this comparison in the face right here and now. But wait! There’s more to this!
which is why i don’t like Ka/tara and A@ng getting together at such a young age, but then again, I don’t like the pairing at all, but we can talk about that another time
Now that we’ve addressed the maturity gap, let’s get into it!
For starters, Blake and Yang’s relationship started as good friends and then progressed into love interests and possibly girlfriends by the time of S7 (they haven’t quite jumped out with “we’re dating” but I personally think they’re taking it slow lol, ask me for my thoughts about it), so they kind of have the advantage of time on their side while Kata/ra and A@ng have only three seasons of development.
That being said, Kata@ng had 3 seasons, which is more than enough time to get both sides of their relationship but nooooo. We only see Aa/ng’s side of the romance, and Kat@ra for the most part acts like a mom, is uninterested, or straight up tries to let him down gently, and after the disastrous Ember Island Players kiss, which happens to be their last one-on-one interaction before the epilogue I want to pretend doesn’t exist, Katara and Aang’s friendship plumments badly. Heck, their last interaction ever ends badly, with the entire Gaang arguing with A@ng about how to end the war!
what I’m saying is that Kat@ra and Aa/ng had a strained friendship before they did that cursed kiss while Blake and Yang’s friendship continued to build and then blossom into romance
“But Nightfalcon, what about the abandonment issues?!”
I’m getting there, be patient!
Now for the actual getting together - how do we make these two characters fit together?
By making both characters recognize their faults.
Blake herself knows she’s in the wrong, she addresses her chronic running away issues, starting in Volume 2, in Mountain Glenn, where she says it herself: “But I am! I do it all the time! When you learned I was a Faunus, I didn't know what to do, so I ran! When I realized my oldest partner had become a monster, I ran! Even my Semblance! I was born with the ability to leave behind a shadow of myself; an empty copy that takes the hit while I run away!” (taken directly from the RWBY Wiki). She feels guilt for running away in Volume 3 after the Fall of Beacon, but she internalizes this anger, which pops out at bad times, and she takes her guilt, buries it in anger, and isolates herself. After Sun is injured, Blake believes she’s the one at fault, and when she explodes at him and tells him why she isolates herself, Sun tells her that she’s in the wrong for isolating herself, but then tells her that he would always be there to protect her and be there for her, and that Yang would too (OK I’ve got a whole meta about Sun and Yang and Blake and why they’re amazing relationships but that’s a whole ‘nother meta).
By having Chronic Running Away (CRA bc that’s getting to be a mouthful) character openly address their faults (and others calling them out on it), you’re one step closer to making a ship sail much more smoothly.
Then there’s Yang.
In Alone Together, Yang talks to Weiss that she’s not upset solely at Blake, she’s upset that Blake didn’t feel safe enough to trust them to stay by them, and that they (whether if Yang was referring to just herself and Blake or herself, Ruby, and Blake [as Weiss was taken to Atlas]) could’ve been there for each other. She gets to address her anger and explain why she feels that way, and Weiss lends a listening ear and some advice for her.
Eventually, the two are brought back into the same space, and spend the next few volumes patching up their relationship, or at least, the best they can, up until the fight with Adam, which puts everything on the table, and in the aftermath, Blake promises Yang she wouldn’t leave her and Yang understands and assures her that she already trusts/knows that Blake wouldn’t leave her.
TL;DR: Blake recognizes that her CRA issues are bad, and tries to make amends, Yang gets to vent her issues with Blake’s CRA issues and gets emotional support from Weiss and Ruby. Blake promises not to run, and Yang tells her that she’s not worried about Blake running away because she knows that Blake knows that team RWBY will always be there for her and that there’s a support system in place for Blake that she probably won’t feel the need to run. (seriously if you haven’t watched this show already, please do. It’s really great)
A:TLA, as wonderful as this show is, doesn’t do that for Kat@ra and A/ang.
From memory, The Storm is the episode that really touched on Aan/g’s flightiness, but Katara coddles him in that one, trying to tell him “it’s not your fault, if you hadn’t run, you might’ve died as well” which can be taken either way (IMO she’s right and wrong at the same time. Yes, Aa/ng might’ve died, but also, he needs a solid kick in the pants sometimes, I’ll talk about it later)
The next time his flightiness rears its ugly head, it’s in The Desert. After Appa is stolen, Aan/g runs off to go look for Appa, and Katara is left with Toph, Sokka, and Momo to try and get out of the desert on foot. The entire day turns into a trainwreck, as Toph has extreme guilt for failing to keep the sandbenders from taking Appa (it isn’t her fault but that’s another meta) and Sokka (and Momo) drink cactus juice and is as a result, mentally incapacitated. With the dire mission of getting the news of the eclipse to Ba Sing Se, Katara’s the only one clear-headed enough to lead the way through the desert. Once A/ang does come back, he’s still upset from his inability to find Appa, and lashes out at the others for not caring to look for Appa (even though he’s far away and that no one has a means of transportation to find Appa). Tensions are already high in the group - with dwindling water supply, they have to make it out of the desert fast, but the rest of the team is losing hope - Toph because she feels like a failure and Sokka shaking off the effects of the cactus juice, and Katara looks so tired. When Aa/ng snaps at her, she doesn’t snap back, only quietly telling A/ang that she’s trying to keep this group together enough for them to survive. A/ang running away this episode is not addressed in favor of the team getting out of the desert alive.
Finally, in the finale four-parter, Aan/g runs away again. This time she can only hope that he’ll come back and do his job, but she’s got other stuff to worry about, like the upcoming fight with Azula.
Afterwards...
they don’t talk about it.
YEAH YOU READ THAT RIGHT. They don’t talk about it. They don’t address the running away issues, they don’t address when A@ng kissed her without her consent twice, they just hug on a balcony and then kiss symbolizing a marriage, because I definitely signed up for East Asian Jesus making out with his mom! Definitely! They don’t talk, Katara becomes a silent character and it gets even worse in LoK ~
*Nightfalcon proceeds to take a few minutes to scream*
And of course, no one else really calls out Aa/ng, except for Toph in Bitter Work, but that was more on his fighting/bending style and not on him in general.
The only other really memorable time where Katara’s abandonment issues are brought up is when she’s ranting at her dad in The Awakening, where she takes issue with both him and A/ang leaving her, and for the most part, Hakoda does give her the support she needs.
Heck, in the finale arc, Zuko tells her that it’s probably for the best that Aang is given some time alone to run to his room and meditate. probably because the last time Katara and A/ang were alone, A@ng kissed her without her consent and I’m going into full speculation territory but what if Zuko knows and doesn’t want that to happen again?
So Katara is repeatedly told by the narrative that Aa/ng is the type to run away when things get tough, and that she should let him.
I see both sides of the issue, and I get it, but when it comes to pairing people off in a relationship, well, they shouldn’t have gotten together.
Anyways, Aan/g is also twelve and has proven numerous times to be unable to support Katara emotionally, and has kissed her without her consent twice, while Katara is 14 going on 28 because of the war, losing her mom and stepping up as the mother figure for her entire family, and later because Aang isn’t allowed to grow up at all, along with other symbolism that shoots Kataa/ng in the foot.
TL;DR: Katara and A/ang never really talk about A@ng’s running away issues, and no one comes up to support Katara (they do validate her but it’s not a whole support system she can fall back on fully), and Aa/ng is way too immature for a full on relationship at the time of the show’s end.
So what was the point of this rambly mess? It’s to show how to write a relationship where one character has a tendency to run away while the other one has abandonment issues. I like Bumbleby because Blake acknowledges that it’s a flaw of hers and she actively works to toning it down and Yang has a whole support system and both get to talk about it and aaaahhhhh the communication between them, while you have Katara and A@ng never addressing the issue because Katara’s so gosh darn afraid of stepping on his feelings (see: The Waterbending Scroll) and no one fully provides support for her (Hakoda keeps getting separated from the Gaang and she and Zuko became friends at the end of TSR, and only had an episode between that one and the finale arc so it left a lot unexplored of their friendship) and Aan/g is therefore taught that it’s a-OK to invalidate the feelings of the person you like because you’ll get them in the end!

heyyy perth it’s tt anon i saw u tell everyone to listen to onf’s music so i listened to onf’s music!! and bro... actually amazing. onf are making some of the best and most interesting kpop rn. don’t get me wrong oneus is also making some of the best kpop rn but their songs are simply also uninteresting <3 but onf... sukhumvit swimming is ofc top tier and i also really like my genesis, why and ugly dance (yeah why wasn’t in ur recs and u thought ugly dance sounded like an nct reject YEAH I KNOW we seem to have different music tastes lmao) the dreamer/realist connections were fun to listen to although i feel like the ~ending song swap~ was smoother in the dreamer than in the realist. and a lot of their voices.. i think emkay and etion and jayus? all have this high, airy, bit nasal voice whichhh isn’t really my thing but on the other hand HYOJIN’s voice.. the hyoice.. underrated and deserves more hype forever. and they do so many little interesting compositional/instrumental choices like electric guitar or sax or weird synths or chromatic scales! so even if the song itself is p mainstream there’s enough there to keep u guessing. which is just cool!
TT ANON GOOD TASTE CONFIRMED YET AGAIN!!!!! i didn't think anybody would listen to that post tbh AKSJSJDJ i just expect ppl to be annoyed by me & blacklist onf 😭 but as usual u deliver... i feel trusted... and cared for like u just placed a blanket on top of me after i fell asleep on the couch 💕💕💕 (i haven't slept in almost 24 hrs don't mind the comparisons... and i swear i tried to sleep for 10 hours just now... very boring)
and hey why was in my recs i said listen to the title tracks 😔 i only removed her from my faves playlist recently bc i didn't wanna get tired of it bc it's so good but it'd been there for a year KSJSNSJJS. it's just a solid song and i like it better than we must love on most days (onf performing wml with yooa on rtk kind of... not ruined it but... eh. she didn't sing, only danced, but STILL...). i think my big problem with ugly dance is not only that the song is a bit messy (that would be fine on its own) but that it was pretty much... marketed as a followup to beautiful beautiful in some way? i mean it's a repackage and onf have been doing those storyline mvs since we must love (and maaaybe complete? i forgot the mv i just know the song makes me cry like a baby and the choreo is fun), and since beautiful beautiful, which fucking bangs, was connected to why (& possibly sukswim but look i'm still trying to work out what that mv means KAJZNWJSJ) i expected ugly dance to follow... but no it was just a dance mv in a completely different tone 😔 and i still think my genesis should've been the title track had they followed up from bb but they didn't so... ksjxsmdnsj
yeah it is smoother in the dreamer but i feel like it works well with the songs? like oh fuck thinking about it made me tear up i have a problem KAJDNSNS but like i was gonna say i feel like the realist is (obviously) thematically darker than the dreamer so the abrupt cut into something lighter makes sense imo, like the way you don't remember when you fall asleep - you're thinking (if you're like me i think about oc storylines while i fall asleep) and then suddenly you're in your dreams (if you're like me i remember my dreams very often). meanwhile the dreamer would be more like, an attempt at convincing yourself things are good, and at the end the reality slowly creeps up on you while they keep saying "let's dream"... and i legit teared up while typing all of that help 😭😭 i'm just Passionate about music KAJSNSNSKS but this is ridiculous. but yeah that's how i feel about those songs without going too much into the lyrics and i feel like the way both transitions were done really fits each song!
HYOJIN'S VOICEEE YES HE'S SO FULL AND POWERFUL. i have a post out there where i described all four of their voices with flavours bc it's the easiest way for me to describe high voices and hyojin was a fruit like a peach or passionfruit iirc meanwhile etion was the taste of pistachios/almond milk i think? emkay is sweet like candy but not sour candy or something super gummy, more akin to cotton candy if anything (or those very industrial drinks) so even when he sings loud he sounds soft. something that also applies to taemin btw, he isn't sweet in that same way at all but even when he's loud he just doesn't sound as powerful as key or jinki, and that's the same thing with hyojin and other onf vocalists - he's the powerhouse! jayus... i might've compared his voice to something light like vanilla... i'll look for the post. but yeah if u like hyojin's voice i recommend checking out even of day's performance of you were beautiful guest starring hyojin he sounds beautiful (i link it bc i personally struggle to find it on youtube idk why??), and of course onf's everybody cover on rtk... it did Not please everyone but that's quite literally what got me into them. my favourite shinee title track? with hyojin's vocals? (we ignore wyatt) ofc i was gonna like it.....
also this talk of voices reminds me i forgot to recommend secret triangle :/ so loud for no reason near the end but top 10 songs i listen for jayus' airy tone KWJDMSJSJ. but tbh i can't really pick a favourite vocalist in onf they're all really good at what they're doing... my beloveds... their songs truly are Mainstream But Good these days (ugly dance is still a bit of a letdown but it's on my faves playlist for now so... we'll see how long this lasts) but what i also really like with them are the mvs. they're very cinematic a lot of the time especially why that doesn't even have a single dance shot i still don't know what the choreo is LMAO... umm so yeah this was onf promo hour i guess sorry mutuals i'll tag this long post 😭😭

So I’m sure no one cares but
I’ve recently discovered genderbent Frozen covers and animatics and honestly I love these? Like, a lot?
(Rambly thoughts under the cut, because I got invested in talking about Disney movies and ways they write characters and generalizing stuff, despite writing this all on a whim and doing not much research but hey, that’s what this blog is for. Random thoughts about movies and stories and Youtube comments)
I mean, I’ll admit that I’ve never been a big fan of Frozen - nothing against the story (cause it is good and for all I will criticize Disney for not generally being particularly uh...keen on taking any risks, I do appreciate the way they do break the mold here) or the music (it sounds like a Broadway musical, hell yeah) - but tbh Let it Go far overstayed its welcome and yes, I’m glad kids enjoyed the movie, but we heard it nonstop for way longer than we should have. The song honestly never felt like it went away for, what like, 2 years? I can listen to songs on endless loops, and this was still too much for me. Granted, I never hated it (my brother did, possibly still does, so I didn’t mind listening to it for the sole purpose of tormenting him) but still. It sorta turned me off from the franchise. I didn’t need to hear it every time I walked into a store.
And I’ll also admit to never being big on genderbending. Nothing against people who enjoy it, but it’s never been my thing, and the few fics I’ve read with it never felt like it used the swap for any sort of message or to explore anything particularly interesting. Which I would’ve preferred, because otherwise, I didn’t see the reason for the swap, personally. (and to be fair, I turned off of this pretty quickly, so I’m sure there are good ones out there, but it’s really just never been something I’m big on)
But like...okay. There is this animatic for Show Yourself, but with the audio dropped into the male vocal range and I love it so much. It’s wonderful and adorable (and the song is legitimately very good, so I’ve seen that part, despite never having actually watched Frozen 2). And also a handful of actual covers, which are absolutely amazing. And now I’ve found the same sort of thing with Let it Go (which I’m now okay with - I guess it just takes 7 years for me to get over the oversaturation of that song in society) and like holy shit, friends. Big fan.
Scrolling through the comments also gets all the “can we please get a Disney Prince movie” thoughts and hey, I’m so on board with this. I know, there are movies with princes (Aladdin, Hercules, Lion King, etc), but it’s less that plain fact of having a prince, and more of the arc for the character? Basically, I wanna destroy the trend of having male-oriented movies be more action-adventure-y. Let boys be soft and have feelings, that’s all I ask. Make that the character arc, have your main character be male and need to discover himself, all of the fears and insecurities included, I am begging you.
(Sidenote because I did see some other interesting mentions: I haven’t seen Hunchback, back from what I’m aware of with that movie, that one probably fits closer to what I’m talking about. Also Treasure Planet, because honestly, that really is exactly the kind of arc that I’m talking about, and there’s a reason I love that movie with all my heart, it’s amazing, and go watch it if you haven’t. But like, it’s a coming of age story with some good ol’ found family and no romance! And while Jim is really smart and has some bad-ass moments, I love when we get insight into his emotional state. But I could gush about this movie forever, moving on. The one thing about these is not the lack of royalty (for me), but just...box office? I don’t know the circumstances for Hunchback, except that the numbers apparently aren’t great, and to my knowledge, someone over at Disney just didn’t want Treasure Planet to do great, and this goes to show what marketing does. Apparently, they did the same to Emperor’s New Groove, which isn’t entirely relevant, but my point is, whoever did this to these movies, screw you, they’re wonderful)
(Apologies for the tangent)
Anyway, I’m not saying remake Frozen, but doing the genderbend works really well here, I think? Obviously, I love that Elsa’s arc is entirely her own, and stories about opening up to family and accepting yourself have messages that everyone needs to hear, regardless of any barrier. So this isn’t a criticism, just a thought. Because (granted, I’m not doing research to write this, and I’m admittedly not 100% caught up on Disney movies) it feels to me like female characters do tend to have the more emotional arcs. Talking Disney Renaissance, this feels true in the female-lead movies, especially if you compare to the respective princes. In male-lead movies, it’s not entirely true, and I’m not calling the characters flat or emotionless, but that’s not the main thing going on in the movie. (ie, Simba has his reservations about returning and so he talks to Mufasa, and that’s a big scene and its important, but it feels more like it’s just a step to ultimately taking down Scar - tbh, compare the screentimes there). Again, the Renaissance movies are fantastic and I love them, but I just want to make some comparisons. And I don’t want to delve too deep into the more recent ones, because I haven’t seen them all, but the focus seems much more on the strong, independent female-lead (again, not a criticism because we can always do with more strong ladies who don’t need no man - I am just saying).
But anyway. Frozen. I like the idea of keeping Anna as herself, because the Hans twist and more slow-burn-y development with Kristoff is good - that accomplishes the idea of breaking down tropes. But Elsa as a male character is really interesting to me? Having an arc that centers on fear that’s born of isolation, and ends with self-acceptance and familial love, is something that I don’t recall seeing in male characters very often (not never, but not often)? But I can think of tons of male characters who appear confident and charismatic, even if that’s in their own way, and then even if we do peel back to find trauma and pain, I can think of more instances of it presenting as bitterness or anger rather than genuine fear (or at the very least, we as the audience don’t quite see that fear). I want to see a male character who was forced to repress who they are and has real fear as to who their true self is. I want this character to discover who that is and have a hard time coming to grips with it, and all that stuff because I honestly just really like writing a lot of self-deprecation. Won’t deny that. And then pairing that with magic is also just interesting IMO. I don’t know how magic tends to fall with regard to this sort of thing, but just the fact that it’s inborn and different (akin to D&D sorcery), rather than learned and understood (like D&D wizardry, or even HP wizards), is an interesting thought to me? Maybe because the “strange and different” type of magic reminds me more of the general conception of witches (or...the Salem Witch Trials) which is also more female-leaning, but I won’t stand by that super strongly, because it’s not something I’ve looked into all that much. But it means, to me, that it would be an interesting way to sorta...turn the tables in the way magic gets used.
Point being: I just think this would be a really solid message. That bravery doesn’t have to be saving the world or killing the dragon or even the self-sacrifice story that’s become more prominent in stories now. It can also come from battling your own demons and opening up to people to ask for help. Which is obviously something everyone needs to learn, but if we’re gonna fight the submissive female character trope with some badass heroines, then I say we also do the same thing in reverse for our male characters. Just a thought
#from the mind of niennavalier#long opinion post thing#ill also admit that i really like this idea cause the art is so goddamn good#pretty designs and flowy clothes are my favorite things when im coming up with dnd character designs#and combine that with non-stereotypically-masculine characters and im super down#(i have favorite character types okay? fight me)#but also instagram has been giving me all the frozen 2 stills now and like#elsa is just gorgeous and i dont think i need say more#like im very ace but that aesthetic is so good#(witness me paying attention to this fandom like 7 years late lol)#also i do just wanna clarify some stuff#cause thinking with the modern disney movies#like with moana im not saying that maui doesnt have an arc and good things that happen#i like his part dont get me wrong#but tell me who the titular character is#just sayin#and ive seen a bunch of stuff about kristoff having a song where hes confused about love#and again i think thats amazing!#i need to go find that clip but i legitimately love the fact that this exists#thats good content#im just saying that isnt quite on the same level because same as above#if i ask who the main characters in frozen are#i think you all know the answer#(and my other big ask for disney is to give us a gay character but my hopes there arent super high unfortunately)#(oh and self plug but the more i think about it im kinda doing this sorta thing with one of the characters i made for my short story class#the story itself is meant to be longer than a short story and i wont go into detail here but the idea just ended up being close#even though i started watching a bunch of the clips and having these thoughts after id come up with my character)#(maybe said character is why im having Opinions on this now tho)#(and dumb sidenote but the more i look up fanart the more i realize that the people who are saying that it basically looks like anime#are totally right it really does which is really just interesting to me cause i didnt think of that initially)

Long-term Review: Cardas Clear Light Speaker Cable
Tumblr media
This ain’t your grandpa’s Cardas.
The year is... I can’t even remember, maybe 2012? I was writing for Bound for Sound magazine (BFS) and running my trusty Merlin TSM speakers with a variety of solid state amplifiers and cables, and while there was much to love about this setup, body and warmth were lacking. Merlin's brilliant and dearly-departed designer Bobby Palkovic never stopped reminding me his speakers were best with tube amps and Cardas cables (which he used internally and for jumpers) and he kept urging me to give them a try. I demurred, telling him I hadn’t been a fan of the “Cardas sound” in the past... but an encounter with a friend’s Quadlink 5C’s had me reconsidering. So I put in a call to Cardas to see what they recommended, and they were gracious enough to provide a pair of their recently-introduced Clear Light speaker cables.
The following years are a blur... BFS stopped publishing a short time later, and the Cardas review was put on hold. But I still kept using those cables, and after years of building guilt I finally sat down to do a write-up about them. Cardas, if you’re still listening - thank you for letting me hang onto them, and mea culpa. Better late than never, right...? 🙂
The Clear Light was introduced as a, well, lighter version of their high-end Clear cable. At the time, I believe it retailed around $900 a 1.5m pair - a bit less than half as much as its big brother. This put it in what I would call the “entry luxury” segment of cables, sorta like a BMW 3 series or Audi A4. The newest version of the cable is called the Clear Cygnus; from their website:
In 2017, Cygnus took the place of Clear Light, being the result of a redesign that turned out to be fitting of a new product launch. Cygnus, unlike its predecessor, can be internally bi-wired.
So this review is more than a bit late to the party, but my long-term experience with the Clear Light has been noteworthy and speaks to a fascinating evolution in the Cardas sound over the years.
Then...
Why hadn’t I been a fan of Cardas in the past? I had tried a few of their entry to mid-level cables - Twinlink, Quadlink, Hexlink, Golden Presence, probably others. Cardas had always been known for their smooth, relaxed character and synergy with tube equipment, neither of which are quite my cup of tea. Many of their older models also had quite high capacitance which IMO tended to kill the life of the sound with many components. So yeah, I had a bit of bias against the brand.
Tumblr media
For reference, other cables I had tried with the Merlin speakers included the original AntiCables, the original Analysis Plus oval, Signal Cable, an older Synergistic reference cable, JPS Labs Ultraconductor and the BFS “Lowe’s Special” DIY cables which had handily bested many of the former. But it was always tricky with the Merlins and solid state amps - you wanted something that retained their speed, transparency and immediacy, but with sufficient midrange body and warmth. In terms of tonal balance, the Synergistic faired the best, and was what I was using when the Cardas arrived.
Dropping the Clear Lights into the system, at the time with an April Music Stello Ai500 integrated, quickly dispelled my biases. Cardas was not kidding with the model name - these were easily the most transparent and detailed cables I had yet heard in my system, with a judicious touch of the trademark Cardas warmth and body in the midrange that my system was craving. Most striking was the newfound sense of pulse and rhythm. Maybe this is what the Brits call PRAT, but it wasn’t about bass clarity or tautness per se; it was more about allowing the subtle undulations of an accompaniment to pulsate and flow in perfect balance with a tune.
youtube
A classic scene from the movie Amadeus.
A perfect example: the Adagio from Mozart "Gran Partita" wind serenade, made famous in the movie Amadeus. I still vividly recall putting on a favorite recording by the Berlin Philharmonic wind ensemble (Tidal) and being floated away by the lullaby-like quality of the accompaniment - the “rusty squeezebox” as Salieri calls it. The oboe solo was also more striking, breaths and phrases feeling more tactile and tone having a little more sheen. Bobby was right - his speakers really do click with Cardas wire, and I had never heard the TSM's sing so freely in my system.
Other material showed no lack of slam or extension either. Though the Merlins were light in the bass, their sealed-box design meant there's some meaningful output down to 40Hz, and the Clear Lights made the best of it with an articulate and balanced bottom end. Large orchestral works had nice scale and weight, and the soundstage was expansive and well-delineated - close-mic'ed material sounded up front and present while mid-hall orchestral recordings had plenty of ambience. And most importantly to me, there was none of the undue warmth and dullness that bothered me with past Cardas cables - leading edges were sharp and dynamics popped without overshooting. All in all, the Clear Lights were clearly (ha) the best speaker cables in my system to that date.
... and now.
Fast forward several years. The Merlins have been replaced by Audiovector SR 1 Avantgarde Arreté and Silverline SR17 Supreme, with a rotation of amps from Ayre, Bryston and Valvet. The front end has also been substantially upgraded with the PS Audio DirectStream DAC and Pass XP10 preamp, and competition at vastly different price points has arrived in the form of Audience Au24 SX ($3,290, 2.5m pair) and DH Labs Silver Sonic Q-10 Signature ($450, 8ft pair).
The Audience Au24 SX has a level of refinement that neither of the other cables can match, hardly surprising at 3x to 7x the price. It's oh-so-silky smooth, stripping away layers of noise and grain within and between the notes and leaving behind the purest, most natural instrumental timbres I've heard in my system. By comparison, the Cardas has a bit of a grittier texture, particularly in the upper midrange, and a more up-front presentation. With some speaker/amp combos this was beneficial - e.g. with the Silverline Minuet Grand ($1,999) and Ayre AX7e integrated, the Cardas struck just the right balance of body and presence, making the Audience sound a little too laid back by comparison. I also found the heavier 9.5AWG conductors of the Cardas allowed the Bryston 4B Cubed amp to get a better grip on the Audiovector SR 1 Avantgarde Arreté speakers ($5200) than the comparatively light-gauge Audience. Overall the Cardas put up a very respectable showing against the superb Audience cables, in line with my expectations given the price difference.
The DH Labs Q-10 was a fascinating and far closer comparison. The Q-10 is just as clean as the Cardas - perhaps even more so - with a slightly more direct character that is on the up-front side of neutral. Its silver-plated copper conductors give it extra sheen vs. the pure-copper Cardas and Audience, which could go in either direction depending on your system. With a mellow amp and a smooth speaker it could be just the thing to inject some life; but pairing with a hot tweeter and bright solid state amp could be downright painful. The Cardas feels like it would be more amenable to a wider range of systems, and it has a bit more midrange dimensionality and soundstage depth. The DH Labs counters with terrific bass punch and super-crisp transients that always sound controlled. Overall I had a slight preference for the Cardas in most setups, but the DH Labs hung in there pretty well and is a superb value.
Usage Notes
The Cardas is just thick enough to impress your audiophile friends and confuse your gardener without being unwieldy, and its rubber-finish jacket is flexible and easily handled. Over the course of years of heavy usage (lots of connect/disconnect cycles and being thrown around) it's held up well, the only obvious sign of wear being the conductors on one end starting to pull out of the collet - not particularly dangerous since all Cardas conductors are insulated litz (magnet) wire, but something you'll want to take care with. (I hear Cardas has excellent factory service, so likely they'd repair it at reasonable cost.)
Tumblr media
Little bit of wear and tear showing...
My pair was terminated with Cardas's machined rhodium-plated spades. I have never been a fan of big audio jewelry connectors, preferring unassuming low-mass ones that ironically enough have become all the rage the last 10-15 years. That said, these spades are fantastic. They are the perfect shape and size to fit most any binding post I've come across, including those pesky EU-compliant ones, and for whatever reason - perhaps the rhodium plate and precise machining - they slide effortless in and out of binding posts and tighten more readily and securely than any other spade I've used. I always know I'm getting a secure fit, and I never have to fidget with or retighten them later as I do with most every other spade I've used. Bravo, Cardas.
Tumblr media
Conclusion
I've had an extremely positive ownership experience with the Cardas Clear Light speaker cables over the years, and it remains a staple in my bin o' cables. They opened my ears to the virtues of the Cardas sound, delivering much of the brand's famed dimensionality, body and musical flow balanced with a high level of clarity, transparency and directness. While they had exceptional synergy with my Merlin speakers, they worked with a wide variety of gear and were a delight to handle. I would stick to using them with a system that's already fairly neutral and balanced - true to their name, they aren't going to obscure or romanticize anything. I haven't heard its successor, the Clear Cygnus, but I imagine it should deliver a similar if not greater level of listening satisfaction. Recommended!

okay, i’m on my way home from AWA and i’ve finally had time to actually look into overwatch 2 and collect my thoughts, so here goes... this is gonna get far too long and essentially be a big essay that i know most people won’t care about, but i just really wanna get my thoughts out so i’ll drop it under a readmore! also be warned that if you‘re super into the new character designs you won’t be into part of this post, lol. but anyway:
first off, i think a lot of the discourse i’ve seen about it seems... overblown and based on inaccurate info?? (don’t worry i am not talking about hong kong here, people are absolutely justified in hating blizzard for that and so do i). people keep acting like they’re gonna charge $60 just for new maps or something but for one thing no price or release date has been announced (in fact, the dev team doesn’t even know when it will release and it’s been said that we may have to wait until 2020 for a date, because it’s still early in development), and for another thing overwatch 1 wasn’t even $60 on pc at launch?? yes on console it was which sucks but most of the playerbase is on pc, and the base game was $40 at launch for us. blizzard cannot be so colossally stupid that they’d charge more for this than for the base game, and if they do i’ll absolutely be complaining about it, but for now we literally have no clue how much the cost for OW2 will be.
and on top of that, it’s... not just new maps? it’s new maps, yes, but also multiple new heroes at launch, a whole new PvP mode, a PvE story mode which is something people have begging for to move the lore forward, a new updated engine, and the PvE will have its own maps and brand new abilities and skill trees—with the abilities and skill trees being unlike anything overwatch has done before, and uniquely exclusive to OW2 and not affecting the PvP so you’re not unfairly disadvantaged if you don’t have OW2—and i also feel the need to reiterate that it’s still in early development so i highly doubt we already know all there is to know. blizzard hasn’t been entirely clear on what overwatch 2 even is tbh but it’s certainly not just new maps and if you think it is then i’m actually begging you to spend at least 30 seconds on google because 30 seconds is really all you need to click on one article and see that that’s far from the truth.
also if you’re not interested in the lore then from what i’m gathering you don’t even need to buy it because apparently OW1 is getting all the same stuff except for that? like, people are saying blizzard should just release it all as free content, but apparently they almost are since the new “push” game mode, plus the map that comes with it (and any future ones) is coming to OW1 and it’s gonna keep getting all the hero updates and everything that isn’t exclusive to the PvE mode and players will be put into the same PvP lobbies across games?? correct me if i’m wrong on that but it sounds like if you already own OW1 and don’t want the story mode stuff you literally don’t need to buy OW2 at all—so if you do then you’re just buying the story mode/PvE stuff, that’s it. and if you do, every cosmetic item you already own will transfer over! it’s also not like OW1 is done updating, as we know we can still expect new heroes in it before OW2 releases.
don’t get me wrong, i am a bit worried that the amount of new content won’t be enough to justify the price, i do still hate blizzard for the entire hong kong controversy and desperately wish they would do better, and as a massive lore enthusiast and someone whose primary reason for loving overwatch is based in its characters and world i am very frustrated that this is what it takes for the story to actually move forward, but i’m also really excited to see where this all goes and i honestly think people are largely just complaining without actually looking into what they’re complaining about. i also literally don’t understand the idea that “lol overwatch already had this for like a week before they took it out” about the PvE stuff and would like someone to explain that to me if possible because i’ve been playing this game since very shortly after launch and i’m confused asjdjdnfkd
that all being said i do have what i’m guessing is a pretty unpopular opinion though, and it’s that i... i don’t like most of the character redesigns we’ve seen, and the ones i do like i mostly just kinda like, i don’t love them or feel excited about them, while the rest i’m neutral toward or hate, and that actually really upsets me because the ones i hate most are for two of my most favorite characters and it makes me worried for what they might’ve done to redesign and potentially mess up my other faves—but i guess these will be the designs going forward, and everybody’s pretty fanart is gonna have these designs, so i’ll just have to get used to them.
to be more specific on that last point: i absolutely hate lucio and mercy’s hair and i’m honestly really sad about that, especially since i run a mercy appreciation blog and i don’t wanna celebrate her new design on it because i hate it so that would be very insincere of me but i don’t wanna say negative things and complain on it either, but i just think her hair looks so strange now. and i like lucio’s outfit tbh but his weird neon glowstick hair just... ruins it, it looks so bad to me i can’t stand it and i want his regular hair back. i would honestly prefer not to even acknowledge these 2 designs (well, mostly the hair i guess) exist if i could help it. i also don’t like reinhardt’s beard or bun although i am glad to see his face exposed and like the lion on his armor, and i can see his new hair possibly growing on me eventually. and while mei’s design is mostly okay i loved her old hairpin, it was distinctive and cute and i’m sad it’s gone because i dislike whatever it is that’s in her hair now sjdjdkgkd. also before seeing a side by side comparison i legit had to ask a friend if anything was even different about winston or if i was just blind—which i guess, considering how i feel about the others, is a good thing for me lol. but if you like all these designs that’s valid and i’m happy for you!! just don’t expect to see me praising them, but i’m also not gonna be super negative like this too often either.
for kinda-positives: i actually do really enjoy one single new design though, and it’s genji’s, but not for any specific reason other than i’m excited that he’s finally wearing clothes lol. i don’t feel strongly either way about the design of the clothes themselves (...though i do lowkey agree with the people saying they’re boring looking, but hey, my man is finally done running around naked everywhere, so i’ll take it). and i like tracer’s new glasses and the fact that she ditched the crocs finally!! i’d also like to talk a bit more about mei’s design—a friend of mine is saying people are complaining they slimmed her down, and i haven’t seen any of that for myself but if they really are then i uh... don’t get that? she still looks just as fat to me?? i’ll just let this comment i made in discord as soon i saw the new designs speak for itself:
Tumblr media
so yeah, if she is any skinner it’s because of the newly normal-sized coat, because when i look at the models side by side she legit looks the same size to me or maybe a little bit smaller—but hey, who knows, maybe i truly am just blind! but anyway, if you gave her old hairpin back then i’d honestly have no issue with her new design.
i truly hope the new designs will grow on me more though, especially mercy’s because the feeling of having an appreciation blog for a character you love a lot and not being able to celebrate something like this is a feeling that really sucks, but i... feel very alone in disliking them as much as i do and while i’m glad everyone else is happy i’m sad about that?? at least all the old skins will still be there though, so ultimately i suppose it isn’t that big a deal, i just really really hope i don’t hate symmetra or hanzo’s redesigns too whenever we see them, assuming that every character is getting these design overhauls.
i’ve also had the time to finally watch the gameplay trailer and the cinematic, and you know what’s one of the things i’ve always loved about overwatch? the maps have always been gorgeous, and the ones shown in the OW2 trailer are no exception and i can’t wait to fully see them and explore them. the gameplay itself looks solid too imo and i am very excited to see sojourn will be added to the game, she’s gorgeous and i love her. and the cinematic!! it had so many cute little details, like the ana & baby pharah photo and the birthday photo, and tracer having that picture of emily. and the winston-tracer-mei friendship, getting to see genji and rein being badasses... seeing brigitte and then echo both show up, mercy and mei having that cute little moment, everybody working together and being amazing. the scene between brigitte and tracer that was adorable, the fact that rein made a terrible “ice to meet you” joke the second he was introduced to mei. seeing winston so happy to be able to say that overwatch is back. just... it was cute and cool and fun and i liked it a lot, it reminded me of what made me fall in love with this game in the first place and it made me really excited! i also think that the story should’ve moved forward like this much sooner and that we should’ve been getting much more shorts and comics in between, and i also wish that we didn’t have to wait until overwatch 2 to get sojourn because we still don’t actually have a black woman that we can play as and that really really sucks, but i’m still looking forward to everything as well.
so, in conclusion: i uh... may have mixed feelings about some things but i have to confess that i’ve loved overwatch for years, many of the characters are very special to me, and i’m genuinely excited about overwatch 2. i fully intend to start looking into charities that support hong kong as soon as i can because i want to actually do something for them and show that i’m not ignoring what’s going on over there, but i also wanna buy overwatch 2 whenever it’s released and i feel excited to play it. unfollow or block me for that if you have to but nothing good would come from me being ashamed to say it and i won’t hide it, i definitely hate blizzard but it doesn’t remove my love for the world they created. i‘m going to donate to hong kong charities and i‘m also going to buy overwatch 2 (which probably won’t even come out until 2021 or something), and i feel like giving more to them than i give to blizzard instead of just not doing anything at all is a fair enough way to deal with this issue especially since i am doing my best to boycott them otherwise. and if i play the new OW2 content and it sucks and/or just isn’t worth whatever the price is i’ll complain about it then, and if/when we see other redesigned characters i’ll probably complain about some of them too, but for now i really am excited for the most part!
