"C'mon luci let's go play", a childish wish from a younger brother craving the attention of his caretaker, his grip oh so tight almost removing the circulation from the eldest arm causing pain tho not a lot. "Not now Mammon" the elder spoke trying to pry him off, "I am busy a little later alright?" The child just whines. "But luci...! Non of our other brothers wanna play, plus you always focus on your work!! Just play with me please luci" he looks like he'd cry if not give the attention, the elder tries all with his might eventually givimg in. His brother refused to let up, forcing him to be unable to do anything but allow the young angel to have his way.

"Alright I'll....play with you.."

"Lucifer?" Mammon slowly walked into the avatar of pride's room, a sheepish look upon his face. "I was thinking maybe just us to can spend time together? I mean your always focused on your work and I the GREAT Mammon think you should take a break at least for today ya?" Oh the annoyance Lucifer felt, how dare the destructive brother inturpt his work. He had very important papers and couldn't turn them away, they are very much more important than whatever money making scheme Mammon was thinking of making into some silly game. "No Mammon I'm not in the mood, my work is very much important as of current which must be done as soon as possible" he responds glaring at the tanned male. "But Lucifer I really think you need a break. Take some time to play a game with me your little brother?" "NO mammon. If you do not have anything of importance to tell me then leave." Oh how Lucifer will come to regret those words. "....fine" the former angel of charity leaves the scene, saddened his older brother rather kiss up to 'Diavolo than spend time with him. Bah like he cares.

"Mammy read that book to me again, the one about the prince and the Knight" a blond haired spawnling spoke, hands holding up his favorite children's book up to his older brother/mother figure. He was no older than a 6yo in human terms, a young impressionable 6yo at that high hopes high potential high... wrath. Oh sweet baby he was. 'Mammy' just smiled at his youngest sibling, strong tanned arms bringing the child into the elders chest kissing his head followed by a friendly laugh which radiated through the whole of HOL. "Of course I'll read to Ya tan tan!" The avatar grins oh how his heart fluttered and swelled, never could Mammon ever say no to Satan. "Do you want to read in your room or the library?" No answer was truly needed, 'Mammy' already knew. "library library!"

A frustrated Satan searched everywhere far and wide for his missing book. Where was it? Who could have took it? It could not have been some low life demon! Of course not this was HIS private library after all only he, his brothers, Diavolo + Barbados, and in few RARE occasions the exchange students could enter! Who in the world could have taken his book...Who would dare have the audaci- "MAMMON!!" Shifting quickly into his demon form the 4th brother avatar of wrath would go looking for the 2nd born with an undying force a desire to eliminate the thieving scumbag. He spots Beel, Levi, and Asmo all hanging out playing one of Levi's video games. Rare. "What's got your panties in a twist?" Questions Asmo raising his brow.. "let me guess the scumbag stole from You?" Levi huffed "yeah he stole from me to! I can't find my limited edition ruru-chan fighters game anywhere! Ugh!" "And my perfume and nail set" the 2 OBNOXIOUS siblings spoke both seething with hate. Beel just stayed quiet. "Have any of you seen Mammon at least!?" Everyone shrugged where was mammon no one knows. Annoyed, Satan retracts his demon form to instead visit Lucifer, man's pulling a snitch like Levi does. It's not like he cares about what happens to mammon.

Like he cared

"End it"

No....

"Get it done with hurry up!"

But they'll miss me

"Don't you understand no one cares!"

They care!

"Do they or are you fooling yourself to believe such lies"

He should have cared. Satan should have cared. He didn't care when he saw Lucifer whipping his brother, he didn't care when Mammon cried saying it wasn't him that took everyone's stuff. No..He didn't care when he saw Mammon's dull eyes looking straight at him while a smile plastered the elders face a really really fake smile. He should have cared he knew he should have cared. Yet he didn't. HE DIDN'T. He let it happen...He.. He let the man that raised him for centuries ever since he was just a little spawnling suffer..while He watched, while he participated, while he accuse, called him names, shamed, and emotionally as well as mentally abused him. What kind of brother was He? The blond avatar can only feel wrath seething, could only feel the wrath threatening to lash out at anyone or anything that dare DARE inturpt his search.

Where was He?

Where was Mammon?

Where was the man that used to read him books every night?

Where was the brother that used to sing to him while everyone argued and fought?

Where was his knight?

Where was the brother that promised to always be there for him?

He needed him

He needed his Mammy

Why wasn't Mammy coming to his aide?

"MAMMON!" He cries out continuing his search.

The demon wheezed and coughs, he failed his attempt, he's been lying here by himself stuck in the human realm for what..4 days now? Great.....just perfect...he thought he could do it much easier here yet...ugghhh whatever he'll..he'll try again. After all

What has he done...he drove him away... he was trying to protect him from a fate worse than death, yet in the prideful Damon's efforts to protect drove him away. Fuck this was just like Lilth over again. It's been 5 days, they searched everywhere in Devildom by now and now were searching in the human realm. He felt the bond, the spukd bond no longer as faint as before...They were close....They were close they were going to find him. Once they do Lucifer plans to spoil Mammon rotten. Play as many games as Mammon wanted, bake with him, visit all the famous casinos, May be even gamble a little only a little! He was going to...he had to he needed..

The soul bonded was acting up like fucking crazy, he was close Lucifer is do undeniable close he'll find Mammon soon he will he knows! Following the little hot cold game the soul played he ended up finding a certain white haired demon who looked so disorimtated so awful. " Mammon!" He calls moving t grab him only to watch his hands go through him. "Wha-" no no it can't be..he was,no.."Mammon, Mammon!!"

They were to late..they were way to late. Their brother mammon? Dead gone faded into nothing. when they heard the news everyone's worlds broke into a billion peices.

Beel couldn't bring himself to eat for weeks.

Belphie struggled with sleep constantly waking from nightmare upon nightmare.

Asmo shut down, a response no one could read for not a single person can tell how this plagued him.

Levi left his room often yes but constantly sulked, he never dare talk about or mention ruru-chan or anything related instead walking in and out of Mammon's too, on occasion to take his stuff hoping just hoping his brother would return.

Satan's wrath was off the hooks, when he heard the news he sulked for days upon days, he went through the stages of grief desperately looking through each and everyone of his spells to return the big brother/mother he had lost. When that didn't work he lashed out constantly, he lashed out at Lucifer accusing him blaming him to the mess saying 'he never cared' because he never saw a single tear in the those raven haired eyes. He moves onto the other brothers before moving onto himself, the boy broke. He read the story about the knight and prince as well as the other countless amounts of books his mammy used to read to him hopesnthst he'll return. He never did.

He never did. Lucifer...Lucifer Oh how he failed his little brother, some nights he prayed to their father with hopes of the return of his brother, null. How the once prideful avatars pride faded quickly at the mention of his favorite, he never truly did accept his death. Couldn't bring himself to. Lucifer oh lovely lovely Lucifer 'the failure first born' forever plagued by the last conversation he shared with little mammom before his death.

A/N:this genuinely took a while like LITTERALLY lol. I stayed up late thinking and gathering inspiration cuz I only really write upon impulse and this was one of them. Anyway I'm happy it's done and hope people like it :) sorry if it's too depressing/to long or if there's grammar issues I stayed up writing like for days lol.

Hi, I've recently discovered your fic and I absolutely love it! I'm currently reading chapter 8 and Aemond's list is such a great idea. He reminds me of Arya, but your version of him is even more interesting and likeable imho. Just one thing, I believe that the bastards born in KL/the Crownlands are called Waters, so the names of Aemond's nephews on the list would be Jacaerys and Lucerys Waters, not Rivers. This is not a criticism or anything, just a tiny detail a nerd like me noticed😅. Anyway, I'm in love with your writing and would like to know what is your opinion on Alicent in HotD. Her interactions and characterization in SWHHW is just what I imagined her to be as a mother, especially to Aemond after the eye loss. As for the show, I mostly liked her characterization until episode 8 and the whole "you'll make a fine queen" thing. After that I had mixed feelings about the route they decided to take with her.

Also, how did you get introduced to Rhaemond? Hints from the show, Tumblr...? It is an interesting ship with a lot of potential, but sadly not as popular as some others, at least not yet. Thanks in advance for your answer and for giving me something good to read:))

Criticism is fine! It's good! I mean, I would love 100% total praise, but I am honestly amazed that people love this. My ego is well pleased. 😅 Thank you (and everyone) for reading! Like, I would love to say that I write for the simple joy of it, but no. Readers make it worth doing.

I will confess that I didn't research this properly. I went with Harwin Strong > Riverlands > Rivers, but yeah. I've been out of the fandom for a minute and did not think it through. I have to edit this when I'm done so hopefully I remember to fix it. Will make a note.

My view on Alicent... Honestly, I'm almost at a point where I feel like any criticism of any non-Rhaenyra character is unfair because imo the writers aren't actually trying to create characters, they just contort everyone else to fit whichever role they need for Rhaenyra's plot, but okay, pros and cons? What I like versus dislike?

She's too apologetic, for one thing. I like the green dress scene, but it's so rare to see her show some teeth. I get it, that she really doesn't have all that much power, especially after Driftmark when she's watching her husband try to get their son to snitch on her so that he could have her tongue cut out, or have her tried for treason or killed or set aside or whatever Viserys was angling for in that scene, but I still wish she had a more proactive personality. More like Cersei, Catelyn, Margaery, Brienne, etc.

No way is Catelyn being gaslit into apologizing for being angry that Bran got pushed through a window, you know? Cersei might apologize but she'd also probably leave half the city blind by the time she's done getting her vengeance. I wanted some of that.

Half the fandom hates her for wanting Aegon on the throne instead of Rhaenyra and my problem is that she's not doing enough to make that happen. Everyone's living the grimdark life, playing the game of thrones, while she's a high fantasy damsel queen. They make her a sort of 'Trapped In the Wrong Genre'/'Not Built For This' character like Sansa and it's kinda hard to watch tbh.

I mean, she's more of a Good Wife™ than Alicia in the actual show named Good Wife. Rhaenyra wants to put Jace on the throne, and presumably Daemon, the family serial killer, would want to have his own son take the throne, either way, all Alicent's children and grandchildren will have to be killed to fully secure the throne since Westeros plays by Best Claim Wins but also Keep What You Kill rules. Why isn't she leading the charge to prevent that?

From her perspective she has witnessed the destruction of House Velaryon. Laenor, Laena and Vaemond dead, Baela and Rhaena, Daemon's own daughters disinherited and dismissed for Luke, the boy who cut her son's eye out without so much as a slap on the wrist. What does she think is waiting for her children and grandchildren under Queen Rhaenyra, King Daemon and then King Jace and Master of the Tides Luke?

It's not like she doesn't know how Rhaenyra feels about her children. When someone calls for your still bleeding child to be tortured - there's not a lot to misinterpret about that. Fans can be like "No, that happened a whole episode ago. Get over it! She meant to say gently questioned with cookies and tickles! Rhaenyra would never!" but Alicent isn't supposed to be a fan of Rhaenyra in the show.

Post time-skip, she's like “water under the bridge” when only minutes ago they were accusing her of poisoning the king. You cannot "water under the bridge" your enemies throwing you, your father and your children into highway traffic at every opportunity.

It's like they wrote her to be the show's butt-monkey. Daemon and Viserys literally laughing at her when she's just trying to be cordial, Rhaenys of all people gets to give her that "you have failed feminism" speech, Rhaenyra gets her “now they see you" moment...

Not even sure if butt-monkey is the right trope. She might be more of a Chew Toy? I don't understand why they're this determined to make her a permanent victim. With Sansa, there was the sense that she was being punished in a way for getting Ned killed, for being naive, childish, etc... Ned gets punished for his rigidity... People get "punished" in asoiaf world, but it's like Alicent's being punished for "seducing" grown ass Viserys? For not buying in wholesale to her Hightower inferiority and the natural order of Targaryen supremacy?

I don't understand the desire by the writers and the showrunners to keep kicking a character who is down and has never been up.

When you have one opponent being OP, the other one is usually powerful in some other equivalent way. Like superman has physical power but Lex gets social power and genius intellect.

Dr Manhattan is near omniscient/omnipotent but Ozy is smart enough to plan for that.

You would think it's supposed to be Aegon v Rhaenyra because they're both Viserys' Dragonrider children who stand to inherit, but S1 is entirely Alicent v Rhaenyra where Rhaenyra has

physical power in a dragon,

political power in being the named heir and Viserys' clear favorite with Corlys in her pocket,

childbirthing power (5 sons to Laena and Aemma's 0, and Alicent's 1, 2 or 3 depending on how you count it), and

social power with Daemon and Rhaenys killing for her without hesitation (or repercussion). Even Baela who barely knows her eagerly wants to go fight for her.

What does Alicent have to balance it out?

Instead of giving her the cunning tactician card, they make her dependent on Larys the Clubfoot with a Foot Fetish™

God, I'm ranting again.

I hate how Laena was written too, as a "Daemon's trying his best" Good Wife™ but it's hard to think about them as actual characters outside of simply being Rhaenyra's foils so of course I had to fix it up a little in swhhw.😅 It's mostly a fix-it fic for Rhaena, but if I were doing one for Laena or Alicent, I don't think Rhaena and Aemond would have even been born. I'm talking about serious murders from Day 1. 🤣 As soon as Aegon was born, we're going directly into a Queen Regent Single Mom Era and Vhagar is being fed on pedigree prince meat.

I hate HotD with the passion of a thousand sons, but I have a soft spot in my heart for the black characters and the ND/disabled/maimed characters.

Alicent already had my empathy from the beginning. I don't nail pick, but I hair-pull (BFRBs are a bitch) so, it's near impossible for me to be on the side of the Kool Kidz laughing at her, just personally speaking, regardless of how inconsistent/incoherent she's written.

I try to really avoid a lot of the discourse on hotd because of how ableist it is, but you still see so much of it. All the r-words thrown out for Aegon and Helaena, all the eye jokes on Aemond and the idea that Alicent has inferior/disabled children and grandchildren who should be killed... Like, in 2023, it's just sad that this is still a thing, but I'm always going to be team weirdos (endearing).

And being Team Rhaemond... I have a longer post where someone else asked me about it but it generally boils down to Tumblr and AO3. Basically:

The fanart on here... The Aemond fanart and headcanons are hilarious. Rhaena fanart is harder to come by but it exists.

The dinner staredown gifs. I completely misread that scene. I honestly thought Aemond was looking at Rhaena because I thought the kid was Joff. (I am moderately faceblind and I couldn't really tell them apart on first watch). I was also just kinda generally confused by how they were all sitting down to dinner to feast after Vaemond's murder earlier that day.

Rhaena's is painfully underwritten. I've never seen a character more in need of fanfiction than Rhaena.

This pic: (not mine, I just found it on Google but the original has Aegon in it. it's like a fanart "cover" of a real behind the scenes photo of Ewan and Phoebe and Bethany... )

The lack of Daemon-free Laena fics. I went to AO3 looking for Laena fics but I can't read Daemyra. I tried, but I can't and maybe 90% of Laena fics are actually Daemyra fics, so to avoid that I had to filter out daemon and Rhaenyra so I was left with nothing. And then I tried Baela, but they were only Jace x Cregan fics with more Daemyra. And then searching Rhaena led me to Rhaemond, and there were like 20 fics or so and I read them all, and then I came here for more fics but realized that between the Sirius Black tag and the Velaryon Strong!Reader tag and Visenya lives/Daemon's OC daughter that it would be near impossible to get an actual black reader, Velaryon reader, Rhaena, Baela or woc OC fic, and I was like "FFS, how did this fandom get worse? This is 2023!" and I decided on shipping rhaemond out of spite.

Ok. So we start Stranger Things season 3

I write this as I watch, so basically, it's real time watching with me only in just one post.

And we start of course with the most idiotic team of scientists that has ever lived on a tv series. Because SERIOUSLY, what were they expecting, opening the door again? Carebears? Rainbow Brite? No, of course not. Death and destruction, that's it.

Also, I hope the general dies painfully. He has that look of a main villain that I usually hate so yeah, death. Pleas. Soon.

And OH! They're russians. So they're ANOTHER team of very stupid scientists, not OUR stupid scientists. Of course. The Eighties and the cold war and the Red Scare. So... HOW did they get a gate?

(And no, seriously, Scientists in fiction are always the stupidest smartest people around. I'd be more annoyed by it if it wasn't because in RL we have Scientists making cloned mammoth meatballs so... yeah)

Mike is still an idiot I see. But those kids are not JUST one year older. No way.

10. Has a piece of writing ever “haunted” you? Has your own writing haunted you? What does that mean to you?

This question gave me a bit of an existential crisis as a writer, so thank you lol.

I can take being 'haunted' a couple ways. My first thought was about stories I wrote but didn't like, ones I don't feel represent my writing skills well but are nevertheless in my bibliography forever. In which case, sure, I've got stories, especially older ones, that I would say haunt me. I'd also say I feel haunted by the works I don't finish, the WIPs I was so passionate about but I just cannot seem to pick up and finish. Literal ghosts, in a sense.

But to think about it in a positive way, there's also those stories that you bleed all your heart and soul into, the ones you want to forever be attached to your name. When people talk about you as an author they always point to certain works first because those are the epitome of your repertoire. And maybe it haunts you because it is the quality you forever strive to achieve in the works you create afterwards. In that vein, I can't say which fics people would associate with me, but I'd like to think I have a few. There's certainly a few I wrote that I use as a sort of standard to achieve with every new work. The ones when people when they see my name they go 'yeah they wrote this story'. Haunted by success, perhaps?

To the first point, have I ever been haunted by other's writing? Absolutely. Whether you're a writer or not, there's always stories that carve out a space in your mind. Sometimes they inform your own craft. Sometimes it's the emotions they caused or the thoughts they provoked; the stuff that lingers in your mind long after you've put the book down. I'd certainly say I have some of those.

11. Do you believe in the old advice to “kill your darlings?” Are you a ruthless darling assassin? What happens to the darlings you murder? Do you have a darling graveyard? Do you grieve?

I do believe this. Very much so. But it fucking hurts sometimes. Taking a knife to your own writing that you've put so much work into and meticulously crafted can feel like cutting a part of your soul out, but I have learned how good it can be. I wouldn't say I'm 'ruthless' about it, but I try to keep my mind open when I'm editing.

Sometimes you need to rip your words and details out to make it better. The reader does not need to know every single intricate detail of the characters, does not need to hear every single word of every single conversation, and do not need to know what is happening every single second of the day. It's cumbersome and laborious to read. It slows the pace of the story to a crawl, leaves no room for the reader's imagination to play, and in my opinion, actually distracts from the characters and narratives as a whole by confusing the focal point of the story. Sometimes it's just word count, nothing more. So yeah, I advocate for killing your darlings.

But I do have a darling graveyard. Non-destructive editing is a habit I've gotten into. I always have a separate document full of cut content and alternate plot lines. For sentimentality's sake, or because sometimes those pieces can find a home elsewhere, maybe even in another form. And I often go back to visit the graveyard. They are still your words, and you shouldn't hate them. Respect the work you put in even if it never sees the sun.

17. Talk to me about the minutiae of your current WIP. Tell me about the lore, the history, the detail, the things that won’t make it in the text.

Okay, so you want me to talk about my new mattdrai project ;) Well, it's a World War One AU--one of those 'shoving my blorbos into a setting I'm fascinated by and probably know too much about' kind of fics haha. I'm not sure how much I can say without spoiling the whole fic. It's set in September of 1918, in the region of Amiens, France. But it doesn't actually take place on the battlefield (for the most part... no spoilers). It's essentially a very literal enemies to lovers plot.

The lore that I will share is this: Matthew travelled up to Canada and joined a Canadian regiment (the PPCLI) in early 1915, so he's been on the Western Front for over three years. Leon, conversely, was living in Canada for some time before the war, but due to rising tensions moved back to Germany shortly before the war broke out, and so ends up joining the German forces (160th Infantry Reg.) So he's basically been fighting for four years by September 1918. Which is when they meet.

Both of them are suffering from combat fatigue. They've lost friends, suffered wounds, grown accustom to the danger and the stress and the violence. They run into each other basically by accident, and extenuating circumstances force them to stick together for a while; talking, re-establishing some humanity in each other, getting a little close *wink wink*. But circumstances arise that force Matthew into action, and Leon to make a difficult choice. I can promise a happy ending, but there will be drama and angst along the way. My forte. My modus operandi, if you will lol.

Add on a heaping dose of internalized homophobia from Matthew and Leon being a wee bit traumatised by the amount of killing he's done. Both of them are skilled, highly-valued men in their units (Matthew is decorated, Leon is TBD). Matthew's more stubborn about keeping the lines between them firm, but Leon is less so, because he's so disillusioned at this point. Germany was suffering severely by this point in the war (disease, starvation, exhaustion, dissension in the ranks, increasing public disdain for the war, a revolution), so Leon's more willing to drop the pretense that the war matters. Though he does still find Matthew annoying at times; can't get rid of pissy Leon all the time lol.

And Matthew's tired too, but he's clinging to the idea that the allies have to 'win', even if he doesn't fully believe it, because if he doesn't than everything he's done and been through up to that point means nothing. Which is not to say he's heartless; eventually his hackles drop. I guess in a sense there's an underlying narrative of 'violent men relearning to be kind'.

Honestly there's details (like their family situations, their service records, etc...) that I don't know for sure whether or not will make it into the text, or to what extent. Some of it could be a bit spoiler-y, too. So I don't want to say more just yet.

25. What is a weird, hyper-specific detail you know about one of your characters that is completely irrelevant to the story?

Good lord, I've spent soooo much time trying to think of something for this. I don't know if I have an answer that fits? Most of my small character details tend to form in the moment as I'm writing, so there aren't many I can think of off the top of my head. If it isn't relevant I don't tend to think about it. I wish I did--it'd flesh out my character better. Maybe if I went back and read my stuff I'd find some little character details that fit the criteria, but I can't think of any right now. My brain is too exhausted I guess lol.

That being said, I may have one that's been on my mind recently? With regards to my WW1 mattdrai AU.

I have the notion that Leon still met and became close friends with Connor while he was living in Canada, and after Leon went back to Germany and the war broke out, they found a way to keep sending letters to each other despite serving on opposite sides. Maybe Leon doesn't send his letter through the military post, he goes into town when he comes off the line and sends his mail through civilian channels. Maybe they use some kind of pseudonym system to route the mail around to each other. Maybe they send them through neutral countries. Maybe he sends them to Connor's family first and they send it on to Connor under the guise of a family letter, and Connor does the same when sending to Leon. It's not realistic, but it's the idea that they would find a way to hold on to that friendship despite them being made enemies. I don't imagine it would be easy, or that it wouldn't be tense, but it could help keep their view of each other human, remind each other that the war looks the same on both sides. It may also explain why Leon's more readily able to humanise Matthew upon first meeting.

I don't know if any of Leon's or Matthew's friends are going to come up much, if at all, in this AU, simply because the circumstances keep the whole story pretty focused on the two of them, but I am thinking about what their friends and families are doing during the war.

I’m a Jewish trans bisexual woman and I understand what is occurring. But to call it genocide is so so so disrespectful to us Jews and every culture who has had a genocide.

I'm confused so I apologize for the poorness of my response... I thought genocide could describe attempts to eradicate any social/cultural group; is there another term I could use for non ethnic/national groups?

[ad_1] Every eye has a story to tell and as editors it's our job to grab the attention of the audience - it's the eye and you know that very well that one of the best ways to grab the attention to attract the attention is sharpness right and that's why we have portraits with Shallow depth of field and this firstly so that the audience directly looks into the face instead of focusing on the background hey there this is animation today I'm going to give you three ways to sharpen eyes in Photoshop all the ways are non-destructive and if it Doesn't make any sense to you you are at the right place why three ways again because there's three simple reasons number one how much time do you want to give your image - number two to what extent do you want to go in editing that Image to what extent do you want to go in bringing out the details and number three is very interesting how much your client paid you so sit down any further ado let's get started but before I start spoiler alert the last method will either plumb your mind or will make you Curse me saying that why didn't you tell that to me before I'm sorry about that but the first two methods are also very essential so make sure that you stay tuned so let's begin yeah alright let's begin so here we are in Photoshop and this is one of the stock photos that are Downloaded using this is free using the free plug-in called excels and this is one of the best plugins has ever used this plugin allows you to search through stock photos from inside of Photoshop and import them directly as a layer isn't that amazing guys if you want to Check it out do click on the link right here or here so I have made a video about it it's absolutely free guys they have not paid me as just I'm showing my love to the developer all right so this is the image - the first thing that you Need to make sure is that you convert your layer into a smart object to do that all you need to do you need to write it on it and click on convert to smart object I have already done it so that's why it's showing this symbol Let's make the lid a little bit bigger let's make this come nails bigger to make the sometimes we'll go right click on it and click large thumbnails I'm I was always a sign of large thumbnails alright so the next thing that you need to do is Zoom in to the ice once you zoomed in okay zooming in is very essential don't ignore that because you need to see how it's being sharpened once you zoom then go to filter sharpen mod sharpen all right so this is very smart form of sharpening so let's move the area where You want to sharpen the image now in this case it's the eye all right so what are these values let me quickly explain what these values actually mean and I would request you to play with these letters to get a better understanding of what they actually do but let me just Give you a brief understanding okay so what is the amount slider amount slider is the amount of sharpness as the name suggests the amount of sharpness that you need to apply to your image think of it like this the difference between the highest peak and the deepest Valley That's the amount and as you decrease the amount the difference decreases as you increase the amount the difference increases the difference between the highest peak and the deepest Valley now think of it like this the more the amount you have the more the depth your sharpness will have the more the depth Your peaks and valleys will have now what is the radius think of radius as the size of the texture if the radius is too low the noise is which is the smallest texture will be accentuated pronounced if the radius is little large objects bigger than that will be Pronounced if the laser radius is much larger or objects much bigger than that will be pronounced so so on and so forth all right so you need to find a happy place where the objects that you want to accentuate like the iris like the eyeball are more pronounced okay we'll Get to that

in a minute and reduce noise you don't have to focus on that for now all right so let's look at the first two values and how we use it okay let's look at the amount so first off when you and the smart sharpen increase the amount All the way to 500 okay now this might sound strange but that's what I mean now edit the radius what radius look good looks good to you so if you see look if the radius is 0.2 you see only the noise accentuated this is the pre section only the noise accentuated if You go a little bit further like 0.7 C still the noise is more prevalent now if I go ahead and increase it to like say for now it's giving me a good result how about if I increase it all the way to 12 now this is looking ugly why because Bigger objects are being accentuated I want smaller objects than that so you need to find a happy place in this case I think it's four point five because I already tried this image with that value four point three will also do but that's four point five now reduce noise now When you apply sharpness you have observed that sharpness along with it brings a lot of noise so reduce noise helps you counter that noise remove that annoying but here's the deal here's the catch the catch is that if you increase the radius noise slider the sharpness will also fade away it's Counterintuitive alright so if you really increase the reduce noise as you can see the sharpness is also going away okay so you don't want to keep the value too high because if you do so watch the sharpness is going away we don't want that to happen alright so let's look Let's try it with this valley see it's going away so we want somewhere around seven ten ish so around it's a good value I guess and once you're satisfied with this before clicking okay remember the amount was all the way to five hundred reduce the amount we don't want - much sharpness to around say how about this one a little more maybe alright click OK now this is not the final version of sharpness that you're going to apply to your image now click OK once you click OK you even have more control now this sharpness what what's this this Sharpness is applied all over the image now it's necessary that we control the places where the sharpness is being applied since in this case we want to apply sharpness to just I what do you think we will do to just restrict the effect just to the eye masking right and Since you see this is a smart object we will have a mask for the filter and this is a filter for the smart object a filter for smart object is gone smart filter have a look smart filter now click on that smart filter click on that white box press ctrl I it turns Black now the effect is also gone from all over the image now I want to apply the effect I want to make the effect appear only in those areas where I wanted to appear so that to do that all you need to do take a brush okay make Sure white color selected if it's any other color just click on this small icon just this resets everything if it's like red or something I'll give you a little tip just click on it it will reset everything if it's black and white the opposite way press X it will just You know switch things here and there all right take white and start painting over the areas where you want the sharpness to be there also make sure that you want to have the maximum sharpness in the iris pupil right and then you have the then you want to have The sharpness in the eyelashes you don't want to have too much sharpness in the eyelashes why because that will create an ugly halo effect have a look so if I apply sharpness here look how ugly it's looking at you're not looking natural alright so you want to apply little Sharpness in that area so full sharpness here right and don't you dare apply sharpness on the eye white so if you want to make somebody beautiful don't apply sharpness on the iyc as if you are creating ghostly feeling then an old man is staring wanna show wrinkles and stuff That may be the

case but in this you don't want to do that edges of the eyes yes you want a little sharpness there also eyelashes just a little sharpness to apply just a little sharpness decrease the slow to around 20 and start painting a little bit on the eyelashes Not too much right all right so so that's sharpening eyes using this method also after you do that let's together before and after first so this is the before this is the after isn't that amazing also don't go overboard the sharpen all right now if you think the effect of sharpening is Too much or you can do you can double click on this you see this little icon right these little sliders kind of icon click on it and once you do an option will appear and this option is really cool and just trying to say something till the loading finishes because this Is a large image all right so let's wait oh my god oh my oh my god oh my oh my oh my god oh my god baby let me love you can there's so many ways to laugh yeah mmm make you dance so many so watch this dialog box it's blending options smart Sharpen alright you can decrease the opacity of the filter right so if you if you think the effect is too much you can go ahead and decrease the opacity to the point where you like and there you go suppose you want the effect like 79 percent click OK and there you have it This method is completely SuperDuper non-destructive so whenever you might want to change the values you can always go ahead and double click on this smart sharpen and the values will again appear you can always tweak it later right so this is one of the cool features of this Alright let's cancel this and let's move on to the second method so alright let's delete the Smart Filters ok the second method is also quite interesting and it's also non-destructive so make a duplicate of this layer to do that press ctrl or command J this makes a duplicate So once this duplicate is also a smart object so it has to have a smart object all right then go to filter other high pass right then time the value of radius will be same as the value that we used in smart sharpen remember the areas that you want to Accentuate the size of the texture okay so for that image what's worth four point five all right if you are using this method for the first time then what you need to do you need to find the value where you find all the edges which you want to pronounce in other words if The radius is too low as you can see only you can see noise you don't want that and if it's too high you can see no details every picture that kind of blurry stuff so you need to find a place where it is all gray but the details That you want to accentuate all right so for this four point four four point five worked click OK and once you do that change the blend mode to overlay and there you have it this is the before this is the after now to limit the Effect only to the Aisne all you need to do you know that do the same thing click on the smart filters press ctrl I know that's the wrong method you guys are you guys get carried away so easily ok so why it won't work in this because In this the smart sharpen was a filter itself right in this we are leveraging overlay and filters at the same time so if I just use this smart filters this will kind of become funky let's do this let's try it this will become funky this is supposed to be make it funky why Because we are leveraging both filters and the overlay blend mode in this case that's the reason why we created a duplicate we want the effected duplicate to be applied only to the specific eye so make sure you click on this layer not the smart filter then create a mask Control eye and one of the ways one of the easiest way to create an opposite mask is that press and hold alt and then create a mask all right all right press and hold alt and then create a mask it will already generate a black huh so you Need not go create and control eye you get the idea all right then take a brush white color selected

start painting over it and there you go and you know what the advantage of this is if you want the extra two hundred percent sharpness all You need to do you need a cruddy need a copy sheet is layer and you have that you wanted to send sharpness if you want 300% sharpness copy it again duplicate it you have three hundred percent sharpness and that's the advantage that you have with high pass alright so let's Go back and move on to the third method let's delete all this now before I move on to the third method and this is the easiest method ever and this also gives an excellent results so you need not curse me I always save the best for the last Alright create a new layer this is very simple fairly simple create a new layer blank layer you remember we had an old friend if you are old Photoshop user we had an old friend called sharpen tool some of you might say why to use it it's obsolete let me tell you something the Reason why the sharpen tool is still there in Photoshop it's because the matte the algorithm has been improved amazingly and and you'll see how non-destructive it can go alright not actually but yes it can go non-destructive how select the sharpen tool select it okay don't curse me don't blame me this is Cool you will get that all right you have to do nothing create a new less we let the sharpen tool and make sure this is essential make sure protect details and sample or legs is checked and once they are checked and you are on the new layer Zoom in and just simply paint over the areas which you need to sharpen also make sure that you set a nice value for the strength think of strength as opacity or flow if you have 100% strength the strength of the brush will be hundred percent forty percent forty percent strength it's kind of Self-explanatory let sharpening less strength more sharpening more strength so I usually work with around like thirty five forty percent so that I can paint it all over again so I have a habit of painting it for quite a while so that you some areas I want to sharpen more some Areas I want to sharpen lists so I want to have a light brush so that I sharpen again and again on the areas that I want to sharpen more all right so sharpen on the areas where you want to bring out the details okay here maybe A little here okay let's do that let's increase the strength all right so that's pretty much it now watch the magic we created a new layer and this sharpness is on a new layer if you think the sharpness is too much decrease the opacity and fish you go and watch this If you're wondering what's in this leg just let's just turn off sit and watch the areas that we sharpened isn't that amazing all right so let's increase the opacity back to hundred and let's see it carefully the areas that we sharpen so that's how you sharpen eyes in Photoshop Now I give you three ways to sharpen eyes what's very smart sharpen high fast sharp until right now which one should you use well if you have a lot of time if you have a considerable amount of time to spend behind an image and if your client has paid you too much then No doubt you have to use smart sharpen because smart sharpen is the most advanced and the best sharpening Photoshop has to offer and it's with available with the latest versions of Photoshop it does give you a lot more control so it's completely non-destructive and it's just one Filters unlike hi Phil to where you have to make duplicates if you want more and opacity and stuff there are things that you have to do with it well next comes high pass now you want to use high pass when you're not working with a lot of Lists you want to use high pass then you don't want one too much complexity yet you want good results you don't want to mess with that amount reduce noise shadows highlights all those complex things that you have in smart sharpen you don't have to mess with best yet You'll get amazing results with high pass but also if you want to go beyond 500% sharpness you can

This week's episode of the Mandalorian was really good. I kinda loved all of it. And I shall rant about it ad nauseam beneath the cut.

I loved the political nightmare that is Plazir-15 and it's a seemingly egalitarian and rarified society that is quite literally run on the backs of droids near enough to slave labor to be moralistically icky. And where apparently all the people who actually do all the work are sorta relegated to the underworld or out of sight which....that's a lot to unpack. Droids might not be 'slaves' but with the threat of literal destruction unless they work for the humans and do all the heavy lifting like their continued existence some kind of reward is.... -chef kiss- I'm also going to link to one of my FAVORITE Pop Culture Detective episodes about Star Wars droids and the inherent tragedy of them. I am not kidding when I say this one video completely changed my worldview on droids in Star Wars. Watch it here. Though really, all of their videos are insightful and interesting. You could not go wrong with any of their videos.

And the whole idle rich thing was about as subtle as a punch to the face but I loved it and the continued tension between Lizzo and Jack Blacks' characters. They are like that seemingly happy couple who puts on a good face when in public but behind closed doors, it's a shitshow. All the subtle digs they made at one another, I can't not believe that wasn't deliberate. So yeah they live in this bright and colorful seemingly perfect egalitarian society where no one has to work because their droid slave labor does all the hard work for them. And they can just while away their days doing whatever it is that the idle rich do. It definitely reads like an experimental poly-sci project that went horribly wrong and somehow morphed into an entire society. And since it's Bryce Dallas Howard I am 100% certain all of it was deliberate because she is a smart cookie and makes thoughtful and very deliberate choices in how she approaches her projects.

So yeah that was delightful.

EDIT: Also I love that I'm seeing completely different takes on Lizzo and Jack Black's characters and people are in love with them being the ooey-gooey lovebirds living in marital bliss. Which is completely valid and I can totally get behind that thinking as well. I love how people in this fandom can come up with a dozen different takes on one piece of canon and they can be so disparate. So yeah, feel free to change my mind on that couple, I'm down.

I just know Star Wars and happily ever after pairings are....yeaaaah not a thing for the most part. Thus my rather cynical take on things.

Uhhhh Axe Woves was very much giving me Jaster vibes at the beginning of the episode and I was so there for it at first. Though they kinda crash landed his character by having him go all only warriors of pure blood are allowed in my clique. Because Mandalorians have a GIANT tradition of adopting non-Mandalorians across ALL CANON. Both Legends and new canon.

Foundlings have been a huge part of their society pretty much since Mandalorians started getting canon so that was such a dissonate brown note for me. Also definitely felt very Death Watch-y and like he might as well have been Pre Vizsla pontificating.

So yeah, didn't love that. I did love that he and Bo threw down hard and that yes he will not hold back because she is a woman. Mandalorians respecting that women are just as capable as men and all genders are equal is what makes them so cool. I love that their very language is gender-neutral.

Of course, it kinda makes the fact that they have like gendered helmet styles for men and women a little weird in my book and I kinda lowkey hate that even though I know it's just for the aesthetics and it's not that deep. But I still hate it. LOL

The continued adventures of Din and Bo-Katan are fun, I enjoy they have vastly different worldviews and approach things from such different angles. Din with his suddenly remembered hate boner for droids was a little odd considering he was advocating for getting his bestie droid IG repaired and brought back online. Also did they COMPLETELY just forget about that entire plot point?

I mean I guess it could be viewed as Separatist droids malfunctioning triggering his childhood trauma and that's why he's suddenly back on the anti-droid wagon but it definitely felt very inconsistent with his character.

I know some people are shipping the hell out of Din and Bo-Katan, and I can totally see their POV. So this episode they feasted well and I'm happy for them. I'm kinda meh on the pairing myself but I would not turn down a good fanfic or fanart if it came across my path.

I also hope some glorious writer makes a 90K manifesto of Bo-Katan/Axe Woves, the trusted lieutenant turned bitter enemy because he thought he knew better than Bo with lots of streamy hate sex and other things. Cause I can definitely see that as well.

Even though I am still lowkey in the arguments can be made Bo is a lesbian and or bisexual and a hell of a wlw hot bisexual mess camp myself. Yes, she was with Pre Vizsla but if that work of a man isn't enough to make anyone swear off the entire gender, I don't know what to tell you.

I also kinda disliked the rather lazy-ass way they have Din hand over the darksaber to Bo. Like she earned it cause she got the drop on the person who got the drop on Din? Uhhhh okay. Maybe I, like the rest of us, was just excited for a Din goes through his Mand'alor arc and now feel cheated at such a lazy hand-wavey way they side-stepped that whole plot.

Though I can totally see him being all 'nope skip' to the idea of power. He just wants to bum around the galaxy with his Jedi son and who the fuck would WANT to try and run herd on a bunch of Mandalorians.? The most hard-headed, stubborn people perhaps in the galaxy who are prone to just splintering off and saying 'fuck you I'm taking my toys and going home' at the first sign of conflict.

Yeah Din is definitely too smart to want to get caught up in that goat fuck rodeo and would very much be all "'Nope, SKIP, fuck this shit I'm out"

I still don't think Bo-Katan has any right or ability to wield the darksaber or lead Mandalore is the problem. My trash queen has legitimately screwed that pooch what? Three times?

BUT SURELY THE FOURTH TIME IS THE CHARM, RIGHT???

One last thing I will rant about.

WHERE IS FENN RAU?? I WANT TO SEE FENN RAU.

If they can cast Christopher Lloyd as a geriatric Separatist sympathizer then gods damnit you can give us Fenn Rau.

Fucks sake JUST CAST KEVIN MCKIDD HE IS THE RIGHT AGE AT THIS POINT.

One of our shared family experiences over the years relies on some pretty tasty advances in technology.

For example, it's astonishing how much sound production tech's advanced since I was a teenager. The difference in the tech I used as a teen and what my dad used as a teen (reel to reel vs cassette tape)...

...compared to what I used as a teen versus what my daughter used (cassette tape vs digital, non-destructive editing, and unlimited tracks).

The sheer leap in technical prowess is astounding. Across the same amount of time, someone hit the gas on what you could do in sound production.

And yeah. There's been an accompanying democratization of sound production knowledge. There's so much you can simply look up online or learn in a YouTube video. I remember once we all watched Pitch Perfect and, afterward, Linzy downloaded that mixing app used in the movie and started doing complex mashups herself.

That was at the end of her Jr. High years.

Nowadays her living room's her recording studio. It's also where she does sound engineering, mixing, and arranging. And when it comes to collaborating, yes. That can be done old school in person. But everyone's also got their own recording set ups at home so they can record their own vocal or instrumental parts at home against a recording of a song of hers in progress.

Back in the day, I had a Fostex multitrack cassette recorder. Technically it was a four-track tape recorder. You could also do mixdowns, though. You could record three tracks of music and mix them down to the fourth track. You could then record another two and mix them down to the third track. That came with generational sound loss, course. On top of which you always recorded the final mix to another cassette recorder and you had to do it live in one pass. And when you wanted someone to hear it, they either had to listen to it in person from your cassette deck... or you had to make a copy for them to listen on their own.

Fast forward a million years and these days we get an mp3 sent to our phones attached to a text with lyrics and a question:

It's pretty astonishing how the tech's changed. And me 'n the missus are super thankful for it.

Because.

Because we get to hear some pretty creative, reflective, inventive music hours, sometimes minutes, after Linnzy composed it.

What is your step by step drawing process like, if you don't mind my asking?

I'll just use Sunstealer as an example since he's the most recent thing I did. Under the cut because this is horridly long. You wanted step by step, I’ll give you step by step.

That is a threat.

And every step of the way I use a sharp pen with high pressure sensitivity and a sharp eraser with high pressure sensitivity, unless stated otherwise.

1. Alright, sketch first of all. I pick a whatever color, set a folder to multiply, and add layers in it. I start with the face/helm and take moderate care with making it look decent.

2. From there I sketch the rest of the the pic, preferably very loosely. I aim to not lift the stylus from the pad very much and instead just SCRIBBLE lines into the vague shape I'm after.

3. Set the sketch folder’s opacity real damn low, like somewhere under 10%, create a new folder, set it to multiply, and this is where the horrid amount of layers and layer folders I use comes in. But, you can see I actually did a second sketch of the arms (and legs, though that isn’t visible here) ‘cause I couldn’t make them look right based on my initial sketch.

4. On top of my second sketch I draw the rest of the clean lines. The lines were drawn with this purplish color, btw. I use something akin to it pretty often in my lineart.

5. After all that I use the Auto Select tool to select everything outside my lineart, e.g. everything I don’t want to have color. I then invert the selection and lay down my flats. At this point I used the gold as my base color, but then added separate folders for each following color, clipping them to the gold base layer below. In the case of black, its folder has a whole bunch of layers while I tried to figure out what parts to color black. With layers for the different parts, I can just click them on and off to see what things look like with or without them.

6. Okay, now to the meat of things. I use a correction layer (hue/saturation/luminosity in this case) to change the base gold to a far darker color that I can easily edit later without losing my initial color choice, and create a new layer on top of all my colors, set it on multiply, and in this case used a sort of peachy color to add my first shadows on top of the whole entire picture. At this point the exact colors in use don’t matter one bit, though, as long as you see what you’re doing.

7. I create a second multiply layer on top of the last one, and go over the whole thing again, adding deeper shadows, this time using bright red. But again, color doesn’t matter yet. I like contrast too, so you can see some areas turn almost black.

8. Shinies! We add our first Add (Glow) layer (that can be named differently in other programs, in SAI it was just “Luminosity”). Once again, color doesn’t matter, just as long as you see what you’re doing, but I was working with about the same peach I used on my first multiply layer. And how I add the shines is basically just color the glow over the whole area, then use the eraser in sweeping and circling motions to remove parts of it. I don’t treat each plate/portion separated by lines individually, because then you’ll just end up with mismatched areas that don’t communicate with each other at all and just fight. (Remember to erase the shine from over your shadows too. Auto Selecting the shadows and erasing the glow from the selected area is a good trick.)

9. More shinies! This time we want it to show up as a bit lighter/brighter than our previous shiny. Using a brighter color or higher opacity does the trick. I do the same thing of coloring large areas and erasing shapes out of them afterwards, but this time I make it argue with my first glow layer a bit. Some overlap is good, but I also want them to live their own lives. (I included a view of the second glow layer alone, but I worked with both glow layers visible.)

10. We now have two multiply layers and two glow layers. What we also have, is a base color (gold) and separate folders for every subsequent color (black, face, insignia in this case. And optic, but let’s not touch that yet). We now copy our two multiply layers and two glow layers, and move copies of them into each folder (sans optic) and clip them to the base layer in that folder. We move copies of the multiply and glow layers right over our base layer too, below our other color folders. (I deleted the glow layers from the “face” folder because I don’t want the face to be as shiny, and the multiply layers from the “insignia” folder because there’s actually no shadow over the insignia.) We can make our original multiply and glow layers invisible so they’re not messing things up, and what we should have is... The same exact thing as in step 9. Wow.

11. Now we actually make it look good! Though let’s just color the optic while we’re at it so it’s not all empty. Anyway, this is the stage where we really start to think about color and opacity. I want a neutral lighting to showcase his colors best, so let’s see how we get that. The thing we’ll just do is use Tonal Correction > Hue/Saturation/Luminosity to change our multiply and glow layers one by one, starting from our first multiply layer. I turn the other multiply and glow layers off so I can see what I’m doing and and tweak the colors until I get something that doesn’t scream “interesting lighting”, because I want neutral lighting.

12. Then I go through all of the layers one by one and do the same thing to each of them. The reason I have them each on separate layers is exactly this, that I can affect all of the drawing’s colors individually and make them look just as I want to and always have the option of just going back and easily editing things. I also add a glow layer to the face, but with a brush rather than a pen so I get a softer look, buuut then add a second glow layer with a low opacity to add just a little bit of sharp light in there. And now we have a thing! But it looks pretty flat, doesn’t it? We don’t want that.

13. First of all, let’s add some soft glow to the gold. New glow layer below our multiply and other glow layers, choosing a soft color to accentuate the gold, and then using either a brush or airbrush we add just a bit of color in there. Arrows point to the spots where I added it, because we want the effect to be subtle and easy to miss.

14. We can do better than that, though. Let’s add a multiply layer and do the same thing, adding juuuust hints of darker color here and there. It adds a touch more depth, but again, we want it to be easy to miss.

15. Let’s have a look at the black, next. You may have noticed I turned off the second glow layer on it entirely, and that’s because it was decided that the black shouldn’t be as shiny as the gold. We still want to add some life to it though, and because Sunstealer’s black tints towards blue, let’s make some blue happen by adding a glow layer, and again, very softly with a brush or airbrush, add just hints of color in there.

16. It still doesn’t really good though, does it? It’s pretty boring and lifeless despite our efforts. More layers, then! Some fucking edges, this time. A glow layer above all of our existing layers and folders to affect all of them (except optic, ‘cause optic doesn’t need it), take good ol’ bright white, turn the opacity down a bit, and add sharp light to the edges. Like, all the edges that are touched by light. Seams, everything. We want this motherfucker to shine.

17. Okay, now do the same, except this time on the shadows. The layer is on lower opacity and I didn’t use white but desaturated blue instead. Just add a bit of reflected light in there.

18. Slowly getting there, but let’s do a couple more things. First of all, warm color. Basically, I just like to slap a random color on top of the whole damn thing when I’m finishing a drawing, using either a color, a glow, or a normal layer, depending which one gets me the best results that time. Or, all three, if that’s what I feel like. This time I used a color layer with briiiiiight neon orange. I switched the layer to normal and opacity to 100% so you can see where it’s actually applied, which is, again, on top of all the layers. A pretty large area, but even on 100% opacity with a normal layer you can see it’s pretty transparent. If I had wanted to do a more interesting lighting, I would’ve left it more visible and maybe added another similar layer in a different color, but I wanted neutral lighting so we leave it as just a tiny, tiny hint in there.

19. Still not done. Colors reflect other colors, so let’s make that happen on the black and have it reflect our gold some.

20. Almost there. What are we missing? Color correction, that’s what. I didn’t do much of it for this piece, but with some I really play around with correction layers and layers set to overlay and whatnot. But let’s see what we have here. First of all, there’s one brightness/contrast correction layer affecting the gold only, increasing the contrast so things look a bit brighter.

21. There’s also a second brightness/contrast correction layer, this one simply increasing the brightness a bit. It’s mostly for the sake of the black, because I wanted to make it look a bit more blue by making it lighter, but it worked to make the whole image a little brighter along with it. Aside from the optic, that’s still on top of everything else. But like said, how many corrective layers I have going on depends entirely on what I’m doing. In some cases I can have around a dozen in effect, not all of them always affecting the entire image, but split around to do their thing on different layers.

22. But speaking of the optic! It glows, so let’s make it glow with two layers on top of both of the “color” and “lines” folders. One layer is for the blurred red glow, the second is for the sharply reflected light.

23. And for things like these I like a simple background, which I generally do by just using a couple of gradients and altering their color to whatever looks decent. I also often add an outline to the entire character in pieces like this to make the character pop a bit more, by just copying my base color layer and performing gaussian blur on it.

Oh, and ctrl+shift and tap will jump you straight to the layer you tapped on. Makes moving between layers and finding the damn layer you wanted to edit a hell of a lot easier.

Annnnnd obsessively naming layers and layer folders so you can tell what the heck they actually are when you have way, way many layers to work with.

so you read the táin, what next?

táin bó cúailnge is a great starting place if you're interested in medieval irish lit. it's famous for a lot of reasons -- its length, its quality, the fact that there are good, accessible modern translations available... definitely a go-to if people want to know where to start

but say you've read the táin, and maybe you've even read the remscéla (fore-tales, prequels), and you know there's a shitton of other material out there but you have no idea what direction to go in

here are my recommendations for

what medieval irish text should you read next based on which bits of the táin you liked most

a non-exhaustive* and extremely biased list**

*I may or may not make further recommendations at some stage.

**i tried to minimise the ulster cycle content here bc that seems like an obvious jumping off point and you're probably here for Weird Shit but there's still some ulster cycle bc i like it

if you were intrigued by the hints of supernatural fuckery going on in the background but still like having some humans around -> togail bruidne da derga (the destruction of da derga's hostel)

if you have no interest in humans and just want supernatural fuckery all the way down -> cath maige tuired (the second battle of moytura)

if the ríastrad/warp-spasm gets you excited ;) and you want more body horror and weird creatures -> immram curaig mael duin (the voyage of mael duin). or pretty much any voyage text but mael duin has some of the fuckier creatures in it

if you're like "yeah! medb DID effectively utilise girl power!" and/or just really want to see cú chulainn getting beaten up -> serglige con culainn (the wasting sickness of cú chulainn)

if you're into the geography of it and how events relate to place names and histories -> this is called 'dindshenchas', the lore of place-names, and there are whole collections of just this, but you might also like acallam na senorach (tales of the elders of ireland) which is that but with a frame-story around it, featuring st patrick on a road trip with the last of the fíanna

if you read the mustering of the ulaid and were like "oh hey a big-ass list of names? i LOVE a big-ass list of names! give me all the names!" -> lebor gabala erenn (the book of invasions). alternatively, dindshenchas.

if you cried over the fight with fer diad and generally enjoyed having Feelings -> well, ideally, early modern prose texts (FULL of feelings), but since there are minimal translations of those available, consider longes mac nuislenn, oidheadh chloinne lir, or anything with the word "aided" or "oidheadh" in the title (it means "violent/tragic death")

if you like the references to classical texts that happen now and again -> merugud uilix meic laertis (the wanderings of ulysses son of laertes), aka the medieval irish retelling of the odyssey, which bears no resemblance to the odyssey; OR togail troí (the destruction of troy), the irish retelling of the trojan war that had a noticeable influence on the táin (togail troí is more relevant, merugud uilix is funnier)

if you like it when people insult/trash-talk each other -> scela mucce meic datho (the story of mac datho's pig)

if you just really want to know what the fuck is going on with the bulls -> echtra nera (the adventure of nera). this is only one version of the backstory but it has some cool supernatural fuckery in it so what's not to like

if you want more láeg/cú chulainn content -> tóraigheacht gruaidhe griansholas (the pursuit of gruaidh griansholas), which is a late text featuring excellent láeg moments

cultural appropriation in ATLA (hinduism edition)

i’m sure there’s already a ton of posts about this, but whatever, i’m still making one idc.

ATLA’s cultural appropriation, everyone knows about it, the white people don’t speak about it, and the asian and indigenous people get ignored. we know the cycle. but i wanted to come here and highlight some of the most prominent examples of ATLA abusing hinduism, as i am kinda sorta hindu (i was raised in a hindu household, i go to chinmaya mission, that kinda shit). i might forget some things so keep that in mind.

this is gonna be divided into 3 main sections, since there are different ways that they disrespect hinduism that i don’t wanna lump together.

and i’d say i know a lot about hinduism but that doesn’t make me an expert, obviously, so if other hindus have anything to add and/or correct then please do !! and if anyone else wants to share how their cultures were appropriated then please do that as well !!

so let’s get started shall we?

appropriating hinduism

1) the avatar

we’ll start with the most obvious example: the avatar itself

i know that there are parts of the avatar mythos that are taken from other cultures as well but the idea of the avatar itself is primarily from hinduism.

basically in hinduism, the term dashavatara refers to the 10 reincarnations of lord vishnu (the god of preservation), with avatar(a) meaning form or incarnation in sanskrit, and das(a) meaning ten. it was said that whenever the world was out of balance, lord vishnu would come down to earth in a certain form to restore balance. Each reincarnation is considered a different life with a different story. the avatars of lord vishnu are often considered the saviors of the world.

so basically, the central idea of the show and the actual name of the show is largely based on hinduism.

2) chakras

many different indian religions have a concept of chakras (chakra meaning wheel or circle in sanskrit), but hinduism is the one that primarily preaches the system of seven chakras, the version used in ATLA.

chakras connect the physical body to the ‘subtle’ body (referring more to the spirit and the psyche) by connecting parts of the body to aspects of the mind. the idea is that through different forms of steady meditation you can manipulate the different chakras and allow the pure flow of energy through the body.

the whole idea of chakras on ATLA is that aang has to unblock them all to let the cosmic energy flow through him so that he can go into the avatar state at will. so yeah, pretty much that whole idea was taken from hinduism.

3) terminologies

these are just a few terms that were taken from hinduism. i’m pretty sure there are more that i can’t think of right now but yeah.

“agni” kai

i’ll be honest i don’t know where the ‘kai’ part is from, i don’t think it’s from hinduism but if it is well fuck me i guess. ‘agni’ in hinduism is the god of fire, so the creators used it in ‘agni kai’, the name for a firebending duel.

“bumi”

this is in reference to the hindu word for ‘earth’, which is bhoomi. this is also in reference to our goddess of earth, bhoomi devi. also this doesn’t really bother me but i wonder if the creators knew that bhoomi is a name typically used for women (as are most hindi names ending in ‘i’/‘ee’).

in general, concepts like having multiple complex gods (the spirits) who are capable of good and evil and the reincarnation cycle are prominent in a lot of asian cultures, including (and arguably primarily) hinduism.

mocking hinduism

now we get into the mockery of hinduism in ATLA, because it is very much there.

1) whoever the fuck that baboon guy in the spirit world was

now what the fuck was this.

i mean i wouldn’t say this is the most egregious example of them making fun of brown people but lord why did this even need to be there? this random guy from the spirit world has an indian accent ? and is fervently chanting ‘om’ for some reason, and it’s clearly meant to be seen as comical. also portraying brown people as monkeys....... really.

2) combustion man/sparky sparky boom man

when rewatching ATLA in 2019 i actually had no idea that this was a thing, because the last time i had watched it was as a kid and i didn’t finish it.

so lord was i in for a surprise when i saw...

now... now what.

if you didn’t know, combustion man’s ‘third eye’ is designed to replicate the hindu god of destruction, lord shiva. right down to the vibhuti on his forehead (referring to the three line markings around the third eye).

in hinduism, lord shiva’s third eye is used to reduce people to ashes, though as far as i can recall, not very frequently. the primary significance of the third eye is that it represents the ability of higher spiritual thought and higher consciousness.

the ATLA writers take the ACTUAL significance of the third eye, throw it out the window, and then take its destructive abilities to make a super duper cool and dangerous new firebending technique.

and if that wasn’t bad enough, the actual person who uses this technique, and is meant to emulate a GOD who is PRAISED, is a scary, burly, half metal man who is a villain and an assassin. not to mention the design of his facial hair replicates that super duper scary “terrorist” depiction of brown people, particularly of muslims, that white people are so thoroughly terrified of for no reason.

this is a parody of a god, and they portrayed him as this terrifying, maniacal fucking assassin who, along with p’li, the combustion bender from LOK, is constantly referred to as a “third-eyed freak”. i’ve made this analogy before and i’ll do it again, this is like making jesus into a hitman.

now onto my favorite example...

3) guru pathik

ah, this motherfucker.

i don’t really have any problems with him as a character, i mean hell, must’ve taken a fuck ton of patience to handle aang’s “why would choose cosmic energy over katara” bullshit.

but we all know it, we see it plain as day, don’t even try to deny it.

“guru” literally just means teacher or guide, so i don’t really know why pathik needed to be referred to as “guru” so distinctively from aang’s other teachers and guides, but that’s just extremely trivial compared to all the other issues with this character.

first of all what is this character design? what is he even wearing? if they’re trying to replicate the clothes of swamis and priests and stuff this is already wrong, realized people don’t dress like this. and why the fuck does he have an indian accent? and why was this indian accent done by a non indian (brian george)?

once again, the poor but extremely heavy indian accent is clearly meant to be mocking, if it wasn’t, they wouldn’t’ve gone out of their way to get a non indian person to DO an indian accent, and instead they would’ve just gotten an actual indian person to play the role.

and oh yeah, the onion and banana juice. because hindus just eat weird shit right.

whether it’s actually weird or not, the show certainly portrays it as weird. and as far as i know no hindu actually fucking drinks onion and banana juice.

ironic because brown people can absolutely destroy white people in cooking. but i digress.

i know what you’re all waiting for. because the guru apparently didn’t have enough fun with guru pathik, so they just had to come back to him in book 3:

where do i begin.

so this is obviously john o’bryan’s super funny and hilarious depiction of pathik as a hindu god.

usually when a god has multiple arms it’s to carry an array of things, from flowers to weapons to instruments, and one hand is typically free to bless devotees (ie. goddess durga and lord vishnu respectively):

but of course white people see this as weird and so they make fun of it, hence guru pathik having multiple arms just flailing about aimlessly (save for the two that are being used to carry the aforementioned onion and banana juice).

then there’s the whole light behind pathik’s head which is usually depicted in drawings of hindu gods to show that they are celestial.

also what the fuck is he holding? is that supposed to be a veena? because this is what a veena looks like:

and i assume the reason this was added was to mock the design of goddess saraswathi, who carries a veena:

but that right there in the picture of pathik looks more like a tambura than a veena.

and it also just kinda looks like a banjo?

but i guess the animators just searched up “long indian instrument” and slapped it on there. actually no, that’s giving them too much credit, they probably didn’t search it up at all.

and then the actual scene is pathik singing crazily about chakras tasting good or something while playing the non-veena and it’s all supposed to be some funky crazy hallucination that aang is having due to sleep deprivation. just some crazy dream, just as crazy as talking appa and momo sparring with swords or tree-ozai coming to life.

our gurus and swamis and sadhus and generally realized people are very respected in hinduism, they’re people we look up to and honor very much. and our GODS are beings that we literally worship. and the writers just take both and make caricatures out of them for other white people to laugh at.

4) other shit

before we move to the next portion i just wanna mention there are also smaller backhanded jabs that i can’t really remember now, but one example was when zuko was all “we’ll be sure to remember that, guru goody goody”. or when a character would meditate and say “om” only when the meditation is supposed to be portrayed as comical or pointless. or in bitter work when sokka was rambling on about karma. small things like that. but moving on.

south asian representation, or lack thereof

now i finally get to the “losing” hinduism part. by this i mean the lack of actual representation there is of south asians (the region where hinduism is primarily practiced) despite the fact that hinduism plays such a big role in the show’s world design.

i think it’s safe to say that broadly the main cast consists of aang, katara, sokka, zuko, toph, azula, iroh, mai, ty lee, and suki.

a grand total of none of these characters are south asian. the writers don’t even attempt to add any south asian main characters.

there are characters with dark skin, like haru and jet, but a) they’re not confirmed to be south asian and don’t have any south asian features or south asian names, b) they’re side characters, so they don’t count as representation, and c) even if they were south asian and main characters, jet wouldn’t even count because he’s portrayed as a terrorist.

the ONLY truly south asian character we get is fucking guru pathik. so yeah. not representation.

i don’t get how the creators of this show rip off of hinduism (among many other south asian cultures they rip off of), mock indians, and then don’t even have the decency to HAVE a main character who is south asian.

i’ve never gotten a chance to compile all this, and this definitely isn’t all the creators have done, but i hope this was somewhat informative.
