i have a bit of a hot take: "you have to read novels to improve your writing" is technically, literally true insofar as you're talking about, like, prose structure and style. however, if you're already satisfied with your prose itself, i do not think that's true and i think prose writing sincerely benefits from a multidisciplinary approach that one might get from studying writing across art forms other than novels.
comics, film, television, video games, web-based unfiction like ARGs, concept albums, and pretty much any other narrative art i can't think of right now--they're all fertile ground for developing your understanding of character work, framing, pacing, establishing symbolism and other motifs, setting work, pretty much everything i would consider the fundamental building blocks of narrative fiction. you can learn just as much from picking apart the narrative structure and choices in your favorite manga as you can from doing the same with your favorite novel.
more than that, i think taking a multidisciplinary approach to studying fiction can result in better, more interesting novels--breaking away from your medium of choice allows you to think about art using different lenses entirely and examine your own medium in new ways. studying a TV show could give you insight into how serial, episodic writing differs structurally from trad published novels, and could allow you to take a fresh structural approach on writing a series of novels. studying a comic might cause you to think about your choices of visuals and visual framing, and to be intentional about your "directorial style" in-text as much as you are intentional about your prose style. et cetera and so on and so forth!
i do appreciate where the sentiment "you have to read novels to improve your own writing" is coming from--i mean, for one thing, i agree that the best art tends to come from a genuine enthusiasm for the medium you're working in--but quite frankly, narrative fiction is narrative fiction. we're all working with the same basic toolkit, there's just different ways to use those tools based on medium.
full disclosure: i, as an author, am not a huge reader of novels. i get through 2-4 novels a year, on average. i am, however, a voracious enthusiast of multimedia web-based fiction, comics, animation, and television, and i do the vast bulk of my artistic criticism and analysis in those mediums. i do study prose through the novels i read, but on the whole, even my prose improvement tends to come from studying poetry (something that is painfully obvious in my writing at times, and is not to everyone's taste). don't get me wrong--i am not saying i produce outstanding quality work that should be compared to that of lifelong professionals or anything, but my writing is generally acceptable, and i continue to make marked improvements over time--because my course of study is intentional, regardless of medium.
tl;dr: narrative is narrative, if you set out with the intention to understand what makes a narrative tick, it doesn't matter what medium you're studying, you're still learning.

The FMRI vs MRI thing is hilarious to me. MRIs ONLY see structure. Like the relative size of various parts of the brain. They're great for detecting tumors, for instance. If you want to see what's actually happening in the brain, that's what FMRIs are for. (And EEGs, but those are pretty limited in what they can show.)
So like, an MRI can see that in the frontal lobes of people with DID, there's commonly less grey and white matter than in a healthy control.
Studies like that aren't perfect. This study's model could only tell the difference between someone with DID and someone without 73% of the time. So significantly better than just guessing, but far from perfectly.
Basically they're looking at two completely different things. You might as well be arguing that blood oxygen gathered from a pulse oximeter is better than looking at a pulse by itself, comparing the two only because they share the word "pulse". They're not comparable.

Aypierre just said his mods will ban any idiots in the chat being stupid about the QSMP situation, lmaooo. Absolutely based, get their asses.
#i talk#qsmp talk#I'll be honest. I do not understand the ''Boycott QSMP'' thing#like. if Quackity wasn't doing anything to resolve stuff I'd get it#but. he IS doing stuff#the ccs confirmed he's doing stuff#it feels very much like a:#''Hey we saw you did something wrong and instead of letting you remedy the situation we're going to punish you forever for this.''#''There is no absolution for your sin''#it's frickin weird dude#like don't get me wrong -- I was a freelancer for like... 5 - 7 years?#And I've seen my fair share of awful bosses and terrible power structures + people in power taking advantage of workers#but this just isn't comparable because like I said: Quackity is actually DOING things. He fired the idiots who did stupid stuff#and they're working on doing things for the admins + Egg admins#which once again: was confirmed by the CCs#idk man I just see the whole thing and I'm like ''???'' about it#I think it's just a matter of misinformation + strong emotions + language barriers#plus a side of what I said earlier- ''you made a mistake once which means I get to be an ass to you even if you're trying to fix things''#and in this specific situation that just seems so stupid#advocating for workers rights while getting mad about the owner of the project working on workers rights.#idk man it's mostly Twitter people being stupid but I genuinely almost want to sit down with folks and talk things out#which I will not do because I value my sanity. but I do think a lot of things can be solved with communication#I; however; simply do not have the energy for that#anyhoo that's my two cents and will probably be the last I say on this matter#goodnight y'all I'm EXHAUSTED#For the record even though Q didn't know about what was going on it does suck that it happened#but we can't change the past#not every mistake is fixable or forgivable but this one can be. in my eyes anyways#We'll see how things resolve in the end but it's going in the right direction and that's enough for me to be content for now

the main problem I've had with trying to do 'your PC as other races' art is that when other people have done it, including ryoko kui's changeling comparisons, they always keep the character's original palette-- and that ends up being an immediate stumbling block for me when the first place I'd be inclined to start is with Elyss, whose main point of difference from an ordinary human is that she is green
#and with elyss like-- okay being an ordinary human would affect not only her bone structure and skin but even her eye color#because it's a pretty-close-to-natural sort of lavender grey BUT I already know human!elyss would have brown eyes#so does 'racebend your blorbo' human!elyss also look like theoretically canon human!elyss who looks like her mom?#in that case what about halfelf or gnome elyss-- am I basing those on human elyss or on canon elyss?#because elyss' light eyes are specifically part of her Water Themed Palette--#-- but light eyes with dark skin and hair are really common naturally for gnomes and elves where they're more rare in humans#AND you start to run into the problem of 'here's a gnome with gnomish features and also a different palette' does it even look like her??#and if I have to take 'what would be normal for this humanoid' into account for elyss whose race is such an unusual case--#-- it gets me into the weeds with like... well specifically melliwyk who has dark skin white hair and bright turquoise eyes#that's not going to occur naturally in ANY other race except MAYBE a very unusual elf but like...#okay so do I just keep her palette anyway? but that feels kind of weird compared to how I have to handle elyss??#ALSO I honestly feel like 'how does the hair color and texture translate' is just as valid as ear shape and bone structure for exploring--#-- the different morphologies of dnd races- and just as interesting to me- but you run into the 'are they still recognizable' issue again#TL;DR MY BIG PROBLEM IS OVERTHINKING IT AS ALWAYS#about me#my OCs#elyss#melliwyk

I think for Bayverse hatchlings, if you go with MegOP being their parents, I really think the hatchlings should somehow be randomised. So not a bunch of silver trucks, lol.
That would be because you're correct! I'm a fan of mixing up the colors and patterns bunch (hell even playing with recessive genes some, as you might be able to tell with Fiasco having teal biolights) Plus, shapes wise, there's so much variety to be had as they grow up and change. I feel like most bayverse sparklings start out as silvery and roughly a similar build but as they grow up they start to gain their colors and diversify— plus you've gotta remember how in bayverse we see them scanning different altmodes (remember bumblee in the first movie) so they honestly could probably choose anything.
So while one out of the clutch might end up a blue and red jet, another could be a flat out gray sports car with blue stripes. Another could be a semi truck that's somehow purple with silver stripes. Yet another can straight up not have an altmode and be pure damn red.
I've played around with the idea of their optics changing color with age. in the tfp au I chose white, but I've thought about around red optics working a lot like blue eyes in humans meaning sparklings are born with them and usually they change with age. Plus, I saw in a fic that red optic glass was considered cheaper in general so if you were having your optics repaired or replaced chances are it'll be red— I've thought about this being the reason we see tfp Megatronus have blue optics in the flashbacks but red ones in the present— something happened and they had to be replaced (fun fact! This is actually why Dissent has one red optic but purple everything else! There was an injury to that optic that either needed the glass replaced or the entire thing, and fortunately they were able to get the shanix together to repair it! But not enough that they were able to color match it) and I think this would be the situation in bayverse as iicr we see no sparklings, not the Allspark babies or the hatchlings, with any optics but red

lmao I keep getting into the Usagi/Seiya plotline since it... genuinely actually works and also manages to highlight Usagi/Mamoru well (in a way they... aren't great at doing when they're actually both in the same room, oops)
and then someone always barges in BUT USAGIIII DON'T YOU ALREADY HAVE A SPECIAL SOMEONE??????!!!!!! like the world's most unnecessary Sailor Kool-Aid Man
Usagi's got two hands and genuine feelings for both of them, y'all, leave her alone
#in other news this season feels like it has too many characters and not enough good direction on what to do with them#the outer senshi despite going on about WE GOTTA DEFEND YOU FROM EXTERNAL THREATS are...... fighting with the starlights#instead of the Literal Definite Threats From Outside the Solar System?#like yes I get that the starlights are kind of sketchy and/or assholes but. Mouse/Siren/Crow/Nyanko are Right There. priorities guys#Saturn just kind of wandered off and disappeared after the Nehelenia business...?#Chibichibi was structurally set up to mirror Chibiusa's position in the family but so far has just been a walking plot device#and not well integrated into the rest of the cast or show#partially I suspect they spent too long on the ''nobody knows who the others are!!!!'' dramatic irony and it's thrown the pacing off#and also. unfortunately. galaxia is boring#(this makes me feel broadly vindicated in my preference for the villains' anime backstories that are more personalized)#(compared to the manga's ''they're all incarnations of chaos'' thing or w/e it is? bc chaos....... is just kind of dull)#.......anyway contemplating how I'd patch stuff up#I think I'd shift it around so HaruMichi&tc are the ones primarily fighting the animamates w/ Usagi#& the inner senshi are trying to figure out what the deal is w the starlights (who they don't especially love)#something something disillusionment as they see how the 3 lights' personas are not especially nice people AND then also connect them#to these three fairly ruthless sailor senshi?#mixing around the social groupings also reinforces Usagi's loneliness after Mamoru gets put on a bus#and doing a little more with ChibiChibi as a parallel to Chibiusa - like there's a thing with the photo changing to leave out Chibiusa yes?#so bringing in more of that comparison (and having some unnerving creepy stuff of other people starting to not remember Chibiusa?) -#emphasizes the idea of ''fuck something's up something's happened to Mamoru that's affecting the future'' as a call-back#to earlier in the season when Nehelenia almost trapped him and made Chibiusa fade#(.....and if you REALLY must then Usagi can have Conflict Feelings about her little love triangle via attributing#Chibiusa's disappearance to the wrong cause)#..........this is way too long of a tag rant what am I doing with my life#James liveblogs television

realized tonight that I stopped playing guitar because my first "big boy" acoustic was/is too big for me to play comfortably. I started looking into guitars with smaller necks, fell down rabbitholes of relevant specs, tonewoods, different manufacturers, and oh god please no, brain stop no stop ringing the special interest bell, please no oh look the community college up north has a guitar making program maybe goddammit no stop it please this is so much more expensive than the last expensive thing you've hyperfocused on cut it the fuck out of wow those hummingbirds are beautiful, maybe CUT IT OUT STOP IT

I think there's a real tragedy in the way straight men don't see themselves the same way that people who are attracted to men see them. If you ask a straight man to describe what an attractive man looks like, there's very little variety - the masculine male ideal is tall, broad-shouldered, square-jawed with a cleft chin and built of sculpted muscle. The stereotypical image of an Alpha Male, someone whom he could respect, and envy.
And sure, there are plenty of women, gay men and people of all sorts who are attracted to to this specific type, even exclusively attracted to it, there is so much more variety in this, both in the tastes and their subjects.
The stereotype of "hot wife, ugly husband"-couples was drawn from the observations of straight men, from their own perspective. Women going after men that men find unattractive makes no sense to them, and they figure that women are willing to overlook being ugly if a man's funny, smart or rich enough. If a woman insists that she's attracted to a specific man who isn't attractive by their standards, they'll assume that she's lying.
The tragic part is when a man who believes himself to be ugly grows bitter over this, developing a foul personality which people do find repulsive, and then uses their repeated experiences of being romantically rejected as proof that they're physically unattractive, insisting that surely women would overlook his heinousness if only he was tall and muscular enough, and had the right bone structure. The self-feeding vicious cycle of being a bitter incel is born.
The thing about "ugly men with a good personality can still be attractive" is that they're usually not even ugly. Some people do genuinely find fat and hairy men, thin and delicate men, short men and feminine men attractive. There's as much variety as in cheese, you can't compare aura to brie. And just like in cheese, as long as you're not toxic, somebody's into that. You just need to find the right wine to compliment it.

Want simple tips to heavily improve your skills with character voice??
(📝Note: character voice is the way you convey your character's personality though their pov or dialogue when you write. No two characters speak the same📝)
I speak from experience when I say character voice is hard to get right. Characters, like people, have lots of layers that affect the way they see the world around them and how they interact with other characters. That's why character voice is so important in stories, and why if you write it in a compelling and effective way it will hook people into your story. I hope you learn something new in this post!!
When writing character voice, there's a list of things that you should take into account:
Where are they from? Their past and what they've lived plays a huge part in character voice. Maybe your character grew by the ocean, and so they compare things from the present to the beach, the rocks or the sea itself. You will rarely read about a sailor that is an expert in pants and compares scents to flowers. They might, instead, talk about how a house smells like the wet wood of a ship.
Think about how their personality shapes their language. If they are insecure, they might end most of their sentences with "isn't it?" or "right?" and ask a lot of questions, whereas if you have a confident character, you might find them saying things like "we should do this" or "that will be fun" instead.
What their "lense" is. This is more of an ethic aspect of the character. What have they learn it's okay, and what do they find uncomfortable? Would they find it gross if their friend left laundry on the floor?
Give them special traits (both for dialogue and narration). Maybe character A quotes a lot when they narrate and uses long paragraphs, or maybe B speaks about their past a lot and uses popular sayings. Personally, one character of mine has the tendency to repeat himself when he speaks, as in "yeah, yeah, I'll do it" or "no, no, no. Never" because he is really enthusiastic, and it fits really well with his character.
Pay attention to how they would talk about themselves. Maybe your character doesn't like people to know they're sad because it makes them feel vulnerable, so they will just say they feel annoyed or don't want to talk in that moment. This also means that they will not tell the reader something they are not comfortable saying in the first place.
How is their education? Education is also very important in this context. Did they went to university and have a rich vocabulary and structured sentences, or where they rised in a little farm far from town? You can also play with both a bit: maybe your character did go to university, but maybe they also came from a low income family, and characteristic of both things merge when they talk. Example: long, structured, sentences but a simple and sight forward vocabulary.
That's all for now and happy writing!!

2023 reads // twitter thread
Legend of the Storm Sneezer
quirky middle grade high fantasy about a winged girl with a magical stormcloud that causes trouble
kids with unstable magic in an asylum in a magical forest full of ghosts
she, her best friend, and her time-travelling future selves team up to solve the mystery of the past before it happens again
#Legend of the Storm Sneezer#aroaessidhe 2023 reads#ok i read this bc apparently both MCs are aroace (but not til book 3)#the good: this gave me so much nostalgia for like. the truly quirky MG high fantasy i read a bunch of as a kid#it doesn't take itself too seriously#like. some aspects of the edge chronicles; keys to the kingdom; muddle earth....#i think what this lacks compared to those is structure#there is SO much info and worldbuilding just kinda shoved in there that i don't understand the context or relevance to the plot#the pacing is rough.  it shows them meeting then is like montage they’re best friends now two years later#the whole time travel thing is told to us via journal entries and annotations which honestly was just confusing and felt unnecessary?#and felt like.....untrusting of young readers. like it spells out * means scene break *** means time jump#but time travel Anything doesn't come up til well past half way through the (long) book#it could have just been introduced to the reader in the actual plot#an extremely personal pet peeve: GLOWWORM INNACURACIES!!!!!!!!!!#glowworms are not a light source!!!#I know its a fantasy book but please tell me you're aware Real glowworms emit as much light as stars (relatively) you can’t see by them!!#And THEN they dropped like falling stars how? u know they're Slimy things that wiggle around in glue sacks stuck to the ceiling. They can't#drop????#and finally. why is this boy descibed as having dark skin but is fully white in the illustrations/cover.#anyway: i may read the others if they're also on scribd later on and hopefully they get structurally better?

Can I touch your wings..?
Asking to touch / see their wings with Mammon, Lucifer, and Diavolo! i feel like these would be kinda sensitive but not rlly?
Tumblr media
Lucifer
you had both been working in his office, you were simply trying to work through your homework without the brothers interfering (as they usually did). Your most recent subject involved the anatomy and biology of demons.
reading through the various lists of wings and their differences, you realized Lucifer's wings were a bit odd compared to the others in the textbook. most were bat or insect-like. Glancing up, you spoke.
"Hey... Lucifer, could I see your wings a minute?"
eyes immediately lifting to meet yours he grunts
"and why.. pray tell?"
fumbling over yourself you flip your textbook over to show him what you were studying. "Yours don't look anything like these! I just wanted to get a better view of them. Pleaseee, it's for my assignment."
rolling his eyes, he stood from his chair and dropped his jacket onto his desk, back facing you. in a blink, they appeared, black feathers swooshing around you.
they were enormous, gorgeous even, the pure slate colored feather tips gently drifting across the floor. you had assumed he had gorgeous angel wings, and that they looked similar to what was in front of you. which made you wonder...
reaching a hand out, your fingertips brushed the spot the wings met his back. before you knew it, he whirled in front of you, grabbing your wrist that was touching his wings.
you staggered back at his reaction, trying to pull free from his grip.
"Don't" he released you as you fell back into the chair, gaping up at him.
"luci... they're incredible! I- I didn't know they were so sensitive, my bad."
he left you to your studies, but you were completely breathless... wanting to touch them in full again.
meanwhile, as lucifer struck out of his office, his heart was erratic in his chest. the feeling of your hands gently stroking his feathers caused him to bristle, no one had ever dare to touch his wings before you...
Mammon
Somehow you and Mammon had ended up binge watching nature documentaries as he made an offhand comment about not knowing much about humans and their animals.
So, you had picked one about flying animals and now, the narrator was explaining the different types of wings and how each fits the species and their needs perfectly.
Eyeing the male next to you, you thought about his own wings.
“hey… Mammon?” you murmured, causing his head to turn towards you as he raised an eyebrow in question. “I mean… can you show me your wings? I kinda want to compare them to what I’ve seen in the human realm.”
He shuffles awkwardly between himself, turning his head away, “the hell would’ja wanna do that for? You’ve seen them plenty.” You huffed at his reply and grabbed his shoulders, turning his face towards you. Blinking up at him, you gave your best puppy dog eyes.
He squirmed away from you, “uGH, fine! Just… turn around!”
Happily scooching back, you felt a slight breeze as his wings popped out. Glancing at them, you stared in awe as you came closer, looking over the white, bony structure connected by a thin, black membrane that seemed almost translucent the more you looked at it.
You reached out a hand, fingertips brushing along the sharp edges. You felt Mammon shiver beneath your touch, his face becoming flushed as your gentle touch. Were they sensitive? You thought, bringing your hand to wrap around where it connected into his back.
He jolted, wings disappearing as he spun around to face you, sweat starting to slick his brow as he brought up his wrist to cover his mouth. “Alright! That’s enough, you can’t just poke and prod wherever ya please!”
You laughed, short and soft as he became more and more uncomfortable beneath your gaze. Settling back down to the couch, you continued on with the show.
Unbeknownst to you, Mammon was on fire, the spot where his wings met his back was on fire from your touch. He hadn’t realized how sensitive to your touch he was… but he couldn’t say he was complaining.
Diavolo
You had been playing some games with the lord of devildom, entertaining him with games, books, and more about different folklore and fantasy that humans were interested in. He was particularly interested in one of the mini board characters, a dragon to be specific.
“Indeed, it does look rather defiant, does it not?” he asked you. Nodding in reply, you grabbed the mini figurine from him and turned it around to study it. you took particular notice of it’s wings, the hook looking incredibly similar to the ones on someone’s wings…
“Hey, Diavolo? Could I see your wings for a minute?”
Eyes widening, he tilted his head at your request, looking at how you were contemplating the tiny statue in front of you. Did you mean to compare his wings to this…. Tiny clay thing? He smiled and the next thing you knew, Diavolo was in his demon form.
He turned around and rolled his shoulders back, stretching his wingspan to it’s full length. Your mouth dropped open. Fanned out in front of you, were the largest wings you had ever seen. The muscles and membrane that stretched between the structures of all four wings were nothing but impressive. You looked at the changing colors between the membrane, noticing tiny glistening cells that made up the brunt of it.
“Holy shit…” you murmured. To be honest, his wings very well could have been the inspiration of dragons. They looked incredibly strong… you reached out a hand instinctively to touch the …horn? On the top of his wing.
Diavolo laughed at your expression of awe and desire to touch his wings. No one had ever been bold enough to try and touch them, even Barbatos knew better than to brush past them. But you… were so delicate and curious about them. He assumed you thought they were the stuff of legends.
“Are they to your liking?” he flapped his wings, causing a gust of wind to overtake you. Blinking up at him you responded, “They are… something out of a fairytale, Dia. I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything so…” you were at a loss for words, extending your hand towards the middle of his back, your fingertips brushing along his wingspan.
In a blink, he was towering over you, his wings cocooning you closer to him as you braced your hands against his chest.
“Oh! I- uh… I’m sorry,” you squirmed, backing into his wings. He laughed, transforming back to his casual clothes from before in a blink. He enjoyed teasing you, but you couldn’t ignore the glint in his eyes the way he turned towards you after you touched his skin.
“Well… shall we continue where we left off?” Diavolo gestured to the games laid out in front of him. You nodded, a bit spaced out by the whole ordeal.
“Dia, I have to admit, your wings are magnificent.” Glancing down back towards your book, you laughed as you plunged back onto the couch.
Unaware of his gaze, Diavolo felt an immense pride at the idea of you admiring him. He didn’t consider himself insecure by any means, but he felt his chest flutter at your words… and your touch, he felt his blood scream when you had touched them.
“Well you know… you can see my wings anytime you like.”
