what time is it??? it is time for gwen's unsolicited opinions yet again ur so very welcome

i talk about this a lot and that's because it really gets under my skin, but i am so tired of how some people (not all, it's never all) characterise regulus when shipping him with james (and other places to but this is where i see his character most so). i won't be naming names, just trends, but consistently, reg is pushed into female coded roles, and that make me feel kind of uncomfortable

why is reg the figure skater when james is a hockey player? canonically, they play the same sport, so why is it different in the AU? why is reg maryjane when spiderman is his closer thematic parallel (great power, great responsibility, secret identity, unwilling hero)? why is he always shorter? it used to be that james was the shorter one among the marauders but in the majority of the art i see now, reg is this tiny waif compared to james. why is reg "baby girl"? why of all characters is he "baby girl" for the love of god?

and that's not even mentioning how horribly wrong some people get trans regulus.

i am not saying that people can't write/enjoy these tropes, but i want people to analyse why it's this specific character that is always being characterised this way. it feels like people (1) don't actually understand queer dynamics so they're just writing reg in a way to fit het dynamics and (2) they saw a less traditionally masculine fancast (i'm looking at you timmy, nevermind that timmy is so very masculine) and can't make the difference between a man who is feminine and one who is just like, actually a woman

It's honestly crazy that discussion around testosterone HRT skews so much towards the beginning stages of it (to the point that you have dozens of guys thinking their transition is "failed" if they don't pass by like a year in lol) and what the initial changes of the first couple of months to years look like, like the classic laundry list of those early basic changes like bottom growth, voice drop, etc, when IMO literally none of that compares remotely to the depth and intensity of the long term total masculinization you start to experience like 3-5+ years in.

#also has made it increasingly difficult to relate to those early into their transition honestly #like not in a bitter way it’s just like hard to express how diff the experience is #of being like a year on T vs 5 😭#ETA I muted this post ages ago now but fwiw seeing transphobes pop up in the notes on occasion just to say cruel reactionary shit #you are clowns I cannot imagine seeing a post that is ONLY about discussing with folks about the reality of a medication #and choosing to make that your moment to get a schoolyard bully jab in about how you find it gross or something.#you are less well adjusted than must children. may the universe be kinder to you than you are to others.

I can’t do that; which is why I’m asking you to.#also: a bunch of tags are surprised this isn’t ‘shopped #it’s the lighting. backlit by the sun (which is diffused through the water) but also forelit artificially #the artificial light - a flash pack or something - casts a hard shadow under the creatures arm #which normally wouldn’t be possible if backlit by the SUN; you’d see a less-hard/more-fragmented shadow above water #as light sources ‘compete’ in a sense - and since there aren’t any light sources which can outshine the literal sun #it looks a bit weird when the darkest shadow is being cast from any other origin point - which is what’s essentially happening here #I don’t know the mechanics of how light travels through water; but I know the effect is substantial even with relatively short distances #also: it’s been balanced and color corrected by the author of the photo - who made deliberate choices to bring out the full potential #so it’s not like it’s a fresh and untouched export #but the kind of ‘tacked on’ appearance of the creature is a result of the lighting conditions within the image

Sometimes you just have one of those moments where the progress we've made as a culture get thrown into stark relief. You look at something and go "Holy shit, that would never have happened when I was a kid."

Today, I had one of those moments when I realized that the teenage boys I'm working with are just. genuinely, openly enthusiastic about going to Build-a-Bear for their outing.

These are sixteen and seventeen year old boys! They just had a whole conversation about what to name their "cute", mostly new squishmallows! They're genuinely excited that they're going to Build-a-Bear this weekend and asking other kids to pick up specific accessories for them!!

Holy shit, that never would've happened when I was 16. None of the boys would have dared to be visibly interested - and neither would most of the girls! There would have been a million gay jokes and "Haha, you're a girl" jokes and "What are you, a baby?" jokes. Teenagers weren't even supposed to care about anything back then!

Less than 15 years later, and I'm watching three 17 year old boys treat all that as not even worthy of comment.

So let's call that a reason for hope. Even when the kids aren't alright, in some ways apparently they are alright. Go Gen Z, honestly. It's so lovely to watch you guys just openly doing and saying stuff that, when I was a teen, would've been a social death sentence.

#obligatory disclaimer that this really really obviously is not universal #I do live in a major progressive city #there's definitely a level of a liberal bubble effect here #but it's still really powerful to see it #because even in a major liberal enclave there were so many limits on the gender roles and homophobia etc. etc. fronts #and also the limits of the oppressive weight of obligatory teen apathy lol #seriously go gen z. so glad you guys decided cringe is dead. I will say I get the vibe that a lot of peoples interest and support for strikers is a bit too much for a vicarious ‘burn it down’ thrill, rather than for the actual goals of a strike.

Like UPS has agreed to come back to the table and it is very possible they will concede to Union demands and avert a strike. And if that happens (so long as the union does not make concessions on its key demands) it’s a good thing. It’s a victory for the laborers. It is the same ultimate conclusion that a strike would intend to produce except without the workers having to go on (not so great) strike pay for a week or two.

#I understand to an extent bc I think such a major strike would be very politically significant for the labor movement #But UPS submitting to union demands to avert a strike also accomplishes this. Maybe in a less visible way but all the same #Also on a personal note I would love to see UPS get absolutely fucked but again: strike goals are more important here

2/5: it's been 15 days, and you guys have only made it to 3k . . . that's like only ~27k by june . . .
