She toddles toward him, one tiny hand bawled in a fist and rubbing at her eye, the other stretched out. “Up.”
Tommy wants to look around, believes she's barely awake and doesn't know who she's asking for but she repeats it, this time with much more of a whine in her voice and so he takes her in his arms. She tucks her head into his chest. It’s instinct to lean his head into hers, soft chocolate brown coils brushing against his cheek. “You hungry? Want oatmeal?”
She doesn’t say anything yet but when he moves to put her in the high chair they got from Chim and Maddie, he’s squished and he winces as she begins to put up a fight, wailing a little bit. “Guess I’ll just have to do this one handed,” he mumbles. If Buck and Eddie were here, he’d hand her off or ask them to get the food but they went out for their date.
When they started this— their life together— Tommy had been the one to suggest monthly dates and after some months of wonderful outings, Eddie had planned a date that only Tommy and him would like. So Evan thought they should alternate between everyone’s interests because while he wanted to kiss and lick a sweaty Tommy and Eddie after basketball, he didn’t want to be there otherwise.
So today, Evan and Eddie are out at the planetarium and Tommy is home with their little love, Luna, and her favorite cartoon. A little bit of screen time never hurt anyone. It’s when the tablet is placed in front of her high chair she’s more willing to let go, and tries to wiggle out of his arms unexpectedly. His hold is tight enough that she doesn’t go anywhere without his assistance and she’s honestly still so tiny to him, all 3 feet of her. He dreads the moment she’ll grow up because he can’t get this back. Tommy places the bowl in front of her and her Princess Tiana spoon, as she babbles “Da, Da, Da.”
“Yes, Luna?”
He finds she’s not really asking for anything, just calling him because she can. He loves watching her in moments like this, hearing her mumble words to herself and sing songs incorrectly along with the tv show. Things will change in September when they send her to pre-school, and Evan and Eddie discuss it with fear and excitement but Tommy… he doesn’t want to think about it.
He always wanted a family of his own, something stable and right and everlasting in the face of challenges. And he knows he can handle the changes when they come, but that doesn’t mean he wouldn’t use a time machine to rewind to the moment they got her until now so he can stay here, where it’s simple and easy and Luna only knows hurt in the form of frustration and missing when one of her parents or her sibling is gone.
Usually when he’s about to spiral, Eddie and Evan will catch him. The signs are miniscule, but they’re there nonetheless. His smile isn’t the same, Evan says. Eddie says he holds on tighter to them, and it’s not that they don’t like it, just wish it wasn’t coming from a place of fear. Eddie tells him about all his fears with Chris, and Evan assures him he has the same fears too.
He picks up Luna from her chair and takes her to the living room where all her toys are and he puts on some music as well, wanting her to know the classics. She plops herself on his chest with a force that causes his breath to catch, and watches as the cars and stuffed animals chase after each other on his arm. He shouldn’t cry at this simple sight and tries to fight it with a smile. Tommy takes his phone out to record her. “Luna, say hi to Daddy and Papa.”
Luna doesn’t pay him any mind at first, but then—
“Say hi Daddy, Lion. Say Hi Papa, cars.” She waves with them in her hand, smiling brightly. She drops her toys to blow a kiss, a loud mwah! Leaving her lips.
“Say ‘I love you’!”
“I love youuuuuu!” She screams. Her energy doesn’t often go off the rails which he’s so grateful for. The times he had to watch Jee when she was younger were pretty difficult, even with Evan and Eddie’s help. He cuts off the video and asks for their ETA. While they wait for them to come home, Tommy ends up joining in her game once she hands him a car, and he shares his pretzels with her after she says “the magic word”.

“Welcome to our home of healing! Our resort of restoration…”
Charlie made everyone in the hotel friendship bracelets with little Hazbin Hotel charms she had specially made.
She absolutely keeps scrapbooks. She has one full of photos with her and Vaggie that she’s been filling since their first date, and another full of her friends from the hotel (most are candid photos that they don’t realize she’s taken).
Charlie has done research on the animals each hotel resident seems to resemble. She cried for two hours when she accidentally stepped on Husk’s tail after finding out how important a cat’s tail is and the damage injuries can cause to it…. It did hurt, but he was overall ok and he honestly wasn’t that upset with her, but she still hasn’t quite forgiven herself for the incident and she is beyond careful of where she steps now.
Niffty teaches Charlie to sew after she tore her blazer jacket.After reconnecting with her father, she uses her new found sewing skills to sew her dad a stuffed duck by hand with a little hat that matched his…. The duck was lopsided and awkwardly stuffed but Lucifer loved it nonetheless and put her gift on a literal pedestal. And yes, this did make her continue using her poor sewing skills to sew little stuffed animals for all the hotel’s residents.
After learning about Sir Pentious’ crush on Cherri and Angel’s crush on Husk, she sewed them both little stuffies. Angel’s was a cat that, despite its odd shaped and poor stitching, did kinda resemble the hotel’s bartender, and Sir pentious got a little pink bomb stuffie.
Aside from Vaggie and her father, Charlie is closest to Sir Pentious.
Charlie is the one to propose to Vaggie.
Despite her childlike drawing that most see during her pitch for the hotel and her planning on the wall when she has her miniature breakdown, the princess of hell is actually a rather talented artist and she painted the portrait of Sir Pentious for his memorial after his death during the battle against the angels.
In an attempt to bond with Angel Dust, Charlie asked him to go shopping with her to update her wardrobe. She was worried about the things Angel would pick out for her at first, but rather than shopping, Angel showed her designs he had sketched out himself for her. She was so excited she commissioned him to actually make a few of them. She goes to him before actually going shopping now.
Although she is known for being kind and avoiding conflict when possible, after finding Angel and Cherri having one of their girls nights and watching one of their favorite shows, Charlie became obsessed with crappy reality shows with great amounts of drama that end in violence and screaming matches.
After Dazzle’s death, Charlie started letting Razzle sleep in bed with her and Vaggie since she often heard the little demon goat sniffling as he slept alone for the first time since his creation. Vaggie couldn’t say no when faced with a depressed little demon goat and her girlfriend’s puppy-dog eyes.
Charlie isn’t a big drinker and rarely ever actually drinks, but on the rare occasions she does, it’s usually a game night activity with the others and she usually ends up being the type of tipsy/drunk that causes her to giggle at everything and then end up falling asleep in the most awkward places and uncomfortable positions. Pretty much everyone has taken a turn carrying the sleeping princess to her room or to her girlfriend to return her when this happens.
Charlie took first aide classes to be able to go out after each yearly extermination to try to help those who had been injured in during the the angelic attack. She only stopped to try to focus on the hotel, but plans to try to get back into it once she has more support for the hotel and it’s guests, even trying to convince her dad to go with her.
Unbeknownst to everyone except her partner, Charlie has nightmares about the fight between everyone at the hotel and the angels. She knows fighting was necessary, but she can’t help but wonder how things could’ve turned out if they were able to come to a peaceful resolution.
She writes short, silly stories…. And sometimes little romantic scenarios between her and Vaggie.
Within the seven years her mom has been gone, Charlie has still tried to call her everyday, leaving voicemails about every milestone she’s reached so far. She’s had one–sided conversations with her mother’s voicemail about the start of the hotel, her relationship, and even her getting back into a better place in the relationship she has with her dad. She hasn’t heard back, but she knows her mother is checking them messages because the voicemail box never gets full. It gives her hope despite not hearing her mother’s voice aside from the short voicemail message.

Sometimes you just have one of those moments where the progress we've made as a culture get thrown into stark relief. You look at something and go "Holy shit, that would never have happened when I was a kid."
Today, I had one of those moments when I realized that the teenage boys I'm working with are just. genuinely, openly enthusiastic about going to Build-a-Bear for their outing.
These are sixteen and seventeen year old boys! They just had a whole conversation about what to name their "cute", mostly new squishmallows! They're genuinely excited that they're going to Build-a-Bear this weekend and asking other kids to pick up specific accessories for them!!
Holy shit, that never would've happened when I was 16. None of the boys would have dared to be visibly interested - and neither would most of the girls! There would have been a million gay jokes and "Haha, you're a girl" jokes and "What are you, a baby?" jokes. Teenagers weren't even supposed to care about anything back then!
Less than 15 years later, and I'm watching three 17 year old boys treat all that as not even worthy of comment.
So let's call that a reason for hope. Even when the kids aren't alright, in some ways apparently they are alright. Go Gen Z, honestly. It's so lovely to watch you guys just openly doing and saying stuff that, when I was a teen, would've been a social death sentence.

oh i'm a big gluten guy love gluten. my favorite bread is the three cheese semolina bread from la brea bakery. yes that is weirdly specific but this bread fucks severely. we use it at the cheese shop that i work at for sandwiches and it's amazing. otherwise i love me a focaccia bread. to be honest tho i usually buy white bread the most because it's cheap and i'm poor. and let me tell you there's nothing like eating some white bread fresh out of the bag.

there's such a jarring difference in watching dating reality tv when you're single vs in a healthy relationship
when i was single i watched it almost as an exposure therapy to people being vulnerable and performing romantic gestures, and while i had many moments of "no! that is not how we communicate with our partners!" and awareness of the hilariously compressed timelines of these shows, i was not overwhelmed in cringe
now, while i don't have any more romantic experience than the people in these shows (tho i may have plenty more communicating-in-healthy-ways experience), the romantic performance is thrillingly novel, the vulnerability is alarmingly rushed, and it's overall not as interesting to watch
#potential other thing is love is blind isn't as good as it was the first season or two#but that doesn't seem likely i think this was always beautifully gilded trash tv#about people who can't communicate effectively in no small part bc of the demands of filming#and getting engaged in ten days and married a month later#anyway i was super bored and thought i'd give myself a lil girls night by myself w/ my stuffed animal pabo#and watched ep 1 from the new season#and i was excited to see some mid-30s folks really vibe with each other#but at the end of the ep she falls asleep at an inopportune time#and he's so so upset he thought she left#like i think one thing that is never addressed in love is blind is body language#and basic knowledge such as MY DATE FELL ASLEEP#lots of people would feel dismissed by that but also i think it could be an indication of someone's comfort with you#other than they're not actually in each others' presence#anyway what i was getting around to#is i was screaming at production#please tell him she's asleep#he deserves to know she's asleep she didn't ditch him#anyway this show stresses me out more since really coming to terms with the level at which i'm impacted by other people's movement#how you stand how you eat how you position yourself in relation to other people on and on#right what i didn't get around to saying was i was hoping bc this couple was older#they'd. act grown#but of course not#of course no one is acting grown on this show

im so sad that tomorrow (technically today but i haven't gone to bed yet so shhhh) is our final day here in california. we head out for the airport at noon and im just gonna miss my family out here a lot :(
#everyone came together this year#like. i don't think ive seen this many members of my family in one place since i was still in elementary school. IF it was even close#at the peak of the trip there were like.... 17 of us in one house. that's a lot for us!!!!#i already miss everyone we've said goodbye to#we're staying at my uncle's house tonight and he said he kinda wants to try taking us out for super early morning sushi because im a huge -#- sushi enjoyer and since we leave at noon it has to be early#despite the fact that im sad to go home and that im gonna miss all my family out here so much. its kind of nice to go home#im excited to sleep in my own bed in my own room with my own blankets and all of my stupid stuffed animals again#still. i love my family out here so so much#my uncle said that he's thinking about buying me a ticket out here again as a graduation celebration and that's both scary and exciting#ive never traveled alone before and i don't know how it'll work out but. im excited about the possibility#anyways#idk. i miss everyone so much#but i have to head home at some point
