speaking my truth on npmd because im thinking about this alot. i think the reason it falls flatter than tgwdlm and bf as a musical is that tgwdlm and bf have a running theme — want.
(whole thing undercut)
the cast of tgwdlm want human connection - charlotte wants sam to love her, bill wants alice to love him, mr davidson wants his wife to choke him while he jerks off etc etc, and eventually paul goes from 'i want what anyone wants, money, kids, a partner maybe idk' to - to put it simply - wanting emma (putting it very simply, if i went into detail this post would go off the rails). this switch is what makes him vulnerable to the hive and this want to live and to survive and to be happy with emma is satiated by pokey by giving him the connection he craves via hivemind, this is how it works for everyone. they want to be happy, pokey makes them happy by removing any need to want anything in the first place.
similarly, in bf, the adults of hatchetfield are still miserable and they want to be happy, they have this void within them that they feel they need to fill with products and consumerism. if they buy this stupid fucking doll their kids will love them, they will be happy, etc etc. and this want to be happy is similarly satiated by wiggly via the cult - they have something to worship, or - in lindas case - people who worship them. they have purpose, or at least they think they do, but whether their problems have actually been solved or not - they are still content.
but in npmd, this is less solid. theres that bit where they have to sacrifice what they want the most, but this is near the end. its kind of all over the place, and this wobbliness(?) is sort of just emphasised by the fact that there is no specific lord in black, its all of them. now i loved the summoning when i first watched it because im obviously a huge hatchetfield fan so i like. know who these characters are but as ive seen others say, alot of npmd does rely on knowing hatchetfield lore - understanding injokes. and in hindsight it just... isnt great for the cohesion of the plot.
tgwdlm and bf both have specific themes, specific lords in black, they have subplots but they have a solid throughline that is easier to follow. to me, npmd feels like its all over the place and it just feels kind of...mid for lack of a better word.
i think there were some moments that were just kind jarring? i guess? like if i loved you coming directly after ruths death was really strange, tonally. i wish they spent more time on ruths death tbh she deserved better. richie got two songs and an opening scene. anyways i digress- i feel like whenever i think about it im always like. i just wanted More. which is weird cuz its already like 2 hours long but idk. IDK!!! if i loved definitely felt unnecessary to me- like just conflict out of nowhere. i would have liked more build up to it. maybe im just salty that it took up stagetime that could have been used to grieve ruth but. sorry for the random if i loved you slander i think my point here is that some moments and some subplots felt more tropey, injokey or like fanservice??but not in a sexual way?? - is that the right word to use idk - than actual compelling plot moments. tgwdlm is an incredible work of theatre and uses subversions of tropes to communicate a great story, bf is a detailed criticism of american consumerism and how capitalistic societies force people to rely on products to make their lives better, npmd is. high school drama with ghosts. it just doesnt hit as hard on its own.
i dont want to be one of those "im a better writer, and THIS is how i would have done it!!!! im going to fix this!!!" people so im not going to do that but i think something i would have liked to see was focus on just one lord in black, probably nibbly because i feel like he fits the most and has the least preexisting story. i mean for gods sake, why does wiggly have the most speech time out of all the lords in black again!!! he already has an entire musical about him!!! greedy bitch- well i guess thats kind of his thing. i think i just want to see more of nibbly tbh, he has one nmt story and he only shows up at the very end. anyways that was kind of a side rant sorry gang. there isnt a problem with having a story featuring all the lords in black, but i think it just doesnt quite work in npmd for like structural reasons as well as plot cohesion.
i did enjoy npmd, im not pretending i didnt, but narratively it is the weakest hatchetfield musical and i just wanted to put my finger on what it is specifically. please dont take this as like hate or slander, i am a huge starkid fan, but i think it is important to consume media critically.
also i am not a professional i am a teenage drama and english lit student who likes media analysis and narrative design so just. take everything i say with a grain of salt :)

i think emma is both the most and least comfortable person in a jse scenario. i think she is the most outwardly comfortable and sure and also internally very unsure about what the relationship means and not necessarily comfortable w her emotions.

Anon....I am so sorry for taking forever to get to these asks. I read both ends of his sequel in 36 hours and then couldn't process a thing afterwards 😭
I can scream for a while about this, but I'll try to keep this under a novel's length lol
MAJOR SPOILERS ABOUT GILBERT'S MAIN ROUTE / CHEVALIER'S SEQUEL ROUTE BELOW:
Alright, you asked about Gil and Cheva things, so here it goes.
There is so much Gilbert in his sequel. So much that it starts to feel like Comte's route when it becomes the Vlad show (if you read IkeVamp). And I guess, like Comte and Vlad, they can't shake that friendship that was there since their youth.
In Cheva's sequel, Cheva and Emma go to Obsidian (along with Leon, Yves, Cyran and Lucien - wow that's a mouthful) because of...well, things that happen in the prequel that are barely even important here. Gilbert spends a bit of time with Emma - for obvious reasons, if you read his route, and Chevalier spends some time digging around Obsidian Castle.
One thing that will be nice for players who don't read Cheva's events is they will see his emotional development that was lacking in his route. You will see a Chevalier who is free to be affectionate with Emma in front of his brothers (to which Yves and Leon were thoroughly disturbed). His love for Emma is on full display....and guess who is witnessing all of this.
When the routes split, they deal with the a similar conflict, but one puts the problem solving on Emma, the other puts it on Chevalier. And it's interesting to see how they both handle it - which is they handle it the same way. Chevalier puts all his trust and faith in Emma - and this love is something Gilbert ends up being jealous of.
My favorite saddest part of Chevalier's sequel comes towards the end of his Dramatic Route. Chevalier is put in a terrible, awful, horrible situation, one where we truly see how mad Gilbert is - did you think you saw his madness already? Guess what, you didn't. Anyway, after all the horrible things Gilbert has done to Chevalier (which Leon saved him from!) Chevalier asks Emma and Leon to leave the room.
Gilbert and Chevalier have a heart to heart chat, best that these two can. Gilbert admits that he has known about Emma for some time now (cue shocked Chevalier). He tells him he is in love with her and he had wanted to save her from being tainted by royalty. They are only engaged, and there was still hope for her. He then adds that despite all of Gilbert's obstacles, their love for one another won out and neither betrayed the other. Can these two hug it out now?
Chevalier also had figured out Gilbert is sick and dying. He tells him to get himself better and that Obsidian needs him. Obsidian is nothing without him. This is after Gilbert tried to kill him and even shot him with his gun. That just shows the deep (and weird and twisted) bond these two share. And I think it also shows immense emotional growth for Chevalier.

Honesty time 😳 the bar is in hell for season 2 I knew not to have any expectations but I just I’m not fucking with it and it’s only eight episodes. I was hoping rhaenicent would die but unfortunately you weirdos are getting fed 🥴 and I hope this “love” that Alicent apparently has for rhaenyra I hope it’s one sided after everything that’s happened to still believe there is love or friendship between them is a fucking joke. Speaking from rhaenyras pov “you have one son sitting on my throne and your other son just murdered my child but sure let’s be besties” bffr you guys. And to have rhaenyra question daemons loyalty. DAEMON out of all people. When one of his redeeming qualities is the love and support he has for his family. I need some new writers in that room asap. They have made it pretty clear they want to villainize daemon in anyway they can I knew there was going to be angst between him and rhaenyra but to ask the person that literally crowned you is crazy. It’s basically been confirmed this show is a whole new story and it’s really weird to me that GRRM is allowing for all these changes and letting these characters be butchered I thought him stepping in for the writing in season 2 he would go back to the actual story that HE wrote but oh well. That promo with Olivia Cooke and Emma D’arcy makes you forget this is a war between rhaenyra and Aegon which is really annoying. You can’t expect people to understand this is a tragic story about the fall of a house due to misogyny when you have two women fighting against each other but hey that’s just my opinion. I feel Emma will act their ass off and just make me completely emotionally unstable. Can we talk about how much of a pretty boi Jace looks I see why people keep calling him !book Jon snow

Things I Have Noticed/Remembered from my MCDiaries rewatch
I will be updating this as I continue my rewatch, currently everything listed is out of order, cause I've started writing this as I am on episode 64 of season 1 and I don't feel like fixing it to be in order, so sorry!
What the fuck was Garroth's "plan" he mentions to Zenix in the first episode 😭
Zenix seems to be younger then Garroth in Diaries, considering the way that Garroth talks about him, but I think in MyStreet, Zenix is either the same age or slightly older then Garroth, so far this is like, the only obvious age difference between the series (besides Travis and everyone else of course)
I forgot how entertaining Brendan's character is, he's far less annoying then I remembered
ZANE AS AN ACTUAL BAD PERSON, I LOVE HIM
I love Vylad, but I legit forgot how much he was in Diaries season 1, I thought he was in it far less
Currently at the stage of Diaries where there is no lgbt+ people, i'm very disappointed by this (we haven't even reached the queerbaiting)
KC's character is....not as bad (racist) as I was expecting, still not great though. I'm choosing to believe that KC is from Tu'lu and Maid Cafes are a thing there, and "Kawaii~Chan" is just a stage name for her work.
Y'all know how Cadenza went missing and she was actually turned into a chicken? Yeah, the way Hayden, Castor, & Laurance talk about her to Aphmau makes it sound like Cadenza is a small child. But then it turns out she's the same age, if not older, then Laurance and Aphmau.
Aphmau should've just made Joh and Hayden lovers, I'm so serious, it would make the whole Cadenza and Laurance being "close like siblings" in season 1 to I think actually being called as siblings in season 2 and in MyStreet a lot easier to understand and make a lot more sense.
Why does Kenmur have like, some sort of romance with all the girls from Meteli??? He was engaged to Sasha and is stated to have feelings for Cadenza.
I love when the episodes open from Sasha's POV, and she goes and talks to Gene and there's just no voices. I love having to pause to read what they're saying. (this point is sarcasm)
The way literally everyone reacted to learning Laurance was blind was....icky. Like, I understand Cadenza and Aphmau reacting as like "we need to find a way to bring his sight back", but the fact that it was literally EVERYONE who decided he needed to get his sight back was so weird.
I don't mind Laurance ACTUALLY getting his sight back, but I wish it was done differently. Like, personally, I'd have him like, have to wash his face with the water of the fountain of Lady Irene.
Emma & Corey, Dale & Molly, and Logan & Donna are very sweet couples.
After Zoey and KC were able to turn Cadenza back to her human form, Zoey mentions that she "recognizes Cadenza from somewhere", but I don't think this goes anywhere???? I'm assuming it was supposed to hint at like, Cadenza's backstory.
ngl, I kinda wish we got more of Zane and Kiki's relationship, I really wanna know what side of Zane Kiki actually saw.
Anyway, Kiki is currently expecting.
Nicole (my beloved) has showed up. I've decided I won't question the logic behind her iron fists being able to break bedrock, and instead say that her referencing her iron fists just made me think of Ace from One Piece and Natsu & Gajeel from Fairy Tail.
I COMPLETELY FORGOT ABOUT NICOLE'S FOX, ROXY, AND ABOUT THE WYVERNS IN GENERAL 😭
I need to mention that in one episode (before Aphmau went to Scaleswind and learned about Lady Irene), Garroth says to Aphmau "by the seven", which I think she was hurt, but the use of "by the seven" is similar to how the same phase would be used in Game of Thrones or to how irl lots of people say "oh my god", so I'm really wondering if there were originally supposed to be 7 Divine Warriors instead of 6.
The way when Aphmau found Levin and decided to keep him and Garroth IMMEDIATLY decided he would be Levin's father figure.
The way when Laurance found out that Aphmau had a kid, his response was to play with Levin and say to Aphmau "you didn't tell me you had this little buddle of joy/energy".

"Val, what are you doing?" Pedri says, walking into our room. "We are gonna be… Wait, weren't you wearing a dress?"
"I was."
"Why did you get changed?"
"I'm about to spend an hour singing and jumping around. I don't want to show my butt to everyone around me."
"You have a really nice butt."
"Yeah, a nonexistent one" I chuckle. 
"What?"
"It's ok, I'm used to all my trousers being loose there" I shrug.
"You have a really nice butt, Val" he says, standing in front of me. 
"Pedri, you don't have to say that to make me feel better. It's cute, but not necessary."
"I'm saying it because it is the truth. Look" he says, putting his hands on it, one on each cheek. "Perfect size for my hands. Especially if I do this."
"Pedri!" I laugh when he gives it a squeeze.
"Perfect" he smiles.
"Guys, we are gonna be… late" Ferran says from the door. "Can't you wait until after the show to make out?"
"Can't keep my hands to myself, bro" Pedri shrugs.
"Yeah… Anyway. Eric is ready too, so… yeah" he says before disappearing.
"He's been acting really weird lately, hasn't he?" 
"I don't know" Pedri shrugs again.
"Are you sure everything is ok between you two since kissgate?"
"Please don't call it like that."
"Emma's idea, not mine" I say. "But are you sure everything is ok?"
"It is" he says. "We had an argument, we told each other everything that needed to be said, and have moved on."
"Ok… Then let's go. I can't believe I'm finally seeing Martin Garrix live!"
"You're welcome" Pedri says, kissing my cheek.

"Oh my God, Pedri! He's playing “High on life”!" I say, squeezing his arm.
"I know" he laughs.
"I love this song so much!" 
"I know" he repeats while I start singing. 
"This song is for someone very special to a friend of mine" Martin says from the stage. "Valeria, Val… This is for you."
"Did… did he just say my name?" I gasp, looking first at Pedri, who is smiling like an idiot, and then at our friends. Eric is filming me with his phone, Ferran looking very serious as he stares at his shoes.
"Val…" Pedri says, taking one of my hands on his, the other cupping my face and making me look at him. "Val, listen to the song."
"What?"
"Just listen" he says before starting to sing along. "And I'd walk a million miles just to see you smile 'til the day I die. Oh, I need you by my side, we'd get high on life 'til the day we die… Valeria… I love you."
"You… you…" I mumble, trying to process what is going on. That he has somehow managed to get Martin Garrix to dedicate me one of my favourite songs. That he has used my favourite part of that song as a declaration of love. And that he has told me that he loves me. Pedri… The Pedri… he loves me. Me. 
"I love you too" I blurt out before throwing myself at him and kissing him. The music is very loud around us and someone is yelling, probably Eric. But the only thing I can hear is the beating of my heart against Pedri's chest. It has never gone that fast. Ever.
"I love you, Val" he repeats against my lips when we manage to break apart.
"I love you too" I giggle. "But wait."
"What?"
"Is Martin now playing “In the name of love”? Did you ask him to play two of my favourite songs together?"
"No, I didn't say anything about this one."
"Well, it's perfect. And do you know why?"
"Why?"
"Wait for it…"
"Val" Pedri chuckles.
"Just wait, ok?" I say, humming the song until it makes it to the part I'm thinking about. "Now. I wanna testify, scream in the holy light, you bring me back to life, and it's all in the name of love!" I sing. Or yell, to be more precise.
"I think I didn't hear you" he laughs.
"I wanna testify, scream in the holy light, you bring me back to life, and it's all in the name of love! In the name of love!" I sing again.
"Louder, Val!"
"In the name of love! In the name of love!" 
"In the name of love!" he sings with me. "In the name of love!" we both scream before going crazy and starting to jump and try to dance while hugging, kissing, laughing… and being in love.

"Good morning, Eric."
"Morning, Val."
"Coffee?"
"Please" he sighs as he sits down.
"You could have asked her to stay and have some coffee too" I say, putting the mug in front of him.
"What?"
"The girl you just walked to the door."
"Oh, her."
"Yes, her. Did you at least catch her name?" I chuckle.
"Federica, she's from Turin. And I asked her if she wanted to stay for breakfast, but she didn't want to."
"Looks like someone wasn't up to the challenge last night" I tease him.
"Wow, so mean, Valeria. Who knew happiness would do this to you?"
"What?" I laugh.
"You haven't stopped smiling since Pedri's love confession last night. I know we haven't known each other for that long, but I had never seen you like this."
"I've never felt this happy" I confess, not being able to hide a smile. "Wait, who is that?"
"Uh?"
"That girl" I say, nodding towards the door. The ground floor of the house where we are staying in Ibiza is completely open, the kitchen area getting mixed with the living room and the entrance, giving you no chance to hide if you want to sneak in or out through the main door without being noticed. 
"Oh, that's the girl Ferran was making out with last night after the show."
"The girl he was making out with had curly hair."
"No, she didn't. She had short hair."
"Who was that?" Pedri asks, joining us in the kitchen.
"Ferran's girl from last night" Eric says.
"But he was making out with a girl with curly hair, the one I just saw upstairs."
"What?" Eric and I say at the same time.
"Yeah, she was walking into the bathroom" Pedri shrugs. "And good morning, gorgeous. I love you" he says, kissing my cheek.
"Good morning. Again" I giggle. "I love you too."
"Ewww… Cheesy" Eric says.
"You better get used to it, bro. Because I'm gonna be telling Val that I love her for the rest of our holidays."
"Shouldn't have helped you with your plan."
"Eric, you were cheering for us last night" I chuckle.
"Because it was cute and romantic! You got her favourite artist to dedicate her her favourite song before telling her that you love her for the first time! But I didn't expect you to go all cheesy, Val. You've said you don't like it."
"And I don't. But a day is a day" I shrug.
"Anyway, let's go to what matters right now. Ferran and his girls" Eric says. "If there is a girl upstairs, and another one just left… That only means one thing" he smirks.
"Oh God" I gasp.
"Cheeky Ferran" Pedri laughs. 
"Cheeky? You call doing that cheeky?" 
"Yeah" he shrugs.
"What is it, Val? Never being part of a threesome?" Eric asks me with a teasing smile.
"What do you think?" I say, feeling my cheeks on fire. 
"You need to do something about that, bro."
"Hell no. I don't like sharing" I quickly say.
"Yeah, I'm not into sharing either" Pedri says.
"Now" Eric snorts. 
"I beg your pardon?" I say, looking at Pedri.
"I… well…" he replies, scratching the back of his neck.
"Ok, I'm leaving. I can't continue with this conversation, I'm too old for it."
"Oh, hey there" Ferran smiles after I bump into him when I try to leave.
"Here is our champion!" Eric laughs.
"What?" Ferran says, his eyes still focused on me, his hands on my waist.
"We know what you did last night" Eric says.
"Yes, we do" Pedri adds, his voice sounding deeper than usual.
"Oh, that" Ferran chuckles, taking a step back and letting go of me. Was that awkward? Not at all.
"Yes, that. We want all the details" Eric says.
"But wait until I'm gone to share them if you don't mind" I say, walking away again. Or trying to, because I bump into someone else.
"Oh my god, I'm so sorry."
"It's ok" I smile, looking at the girl in front of me. She is the one I saw Ferran making out with, the one who hadn't left yet.
"I just came to say that I'm leaving."
"Ok" Ferran says.
"Just ok?" she chuckles.
"Yeah" he shrugs.
"Whatever" the girl says, rolling her eyes. "Goodbye, Ferran."
"Goodbye, Claudia."
"I'm Elizabeth. Claudia was the other girl."
"Oh shit" Eric says, him and Pedri trying really hard not to laugh.
"Let me accompany you to the door, Elizabeth" I say, giving the boys my most murderous look.
"Thank you very much" she replies, looking at Ferran one last time. He, on the other hand, is busy looking at his feet, just like he would do last night every time I looked at him. Unless he was busy with his tongue down someone's throat, of course.
"I'm Valeria, by the way."
"Nice to meet you" she smiles.
"And I'm sorry about those three" I say when we make it to the door. "Kids."
"Yeah" she sighs. "Though I should have expected this from him."
"What do you mean?"
"He told me that he was just looking for a one night stand and nothing else, that he just wanted to have fun and forget."
"Forget what?"
"I don't know" Elizabeth shrugs. "But if you ask me… I think he is trying to forget a girl. And failing miserably. The only thing he has managed to forget is my name" she laughs.
"Sorry about that. He is a nice guy, tho."
"Yeah… Anyway, thank you for accompanying me."
"Of course" I smile.
"And good luck having to deal with the three of them" she says.
"I'm a primary school teacher. Dealing with kids is part of my job" I laugh. 
"Oh, that's lovely. The part about being a teacher, I mean. And I should probably go, I could do with some coffee and a croissant."
"Have you called a taxi or something?"
"Yes, don't worry. It's been really nice meeting you, Valeria" she smiles.
"You too, Elizabeth" I smile back.

I'm on a four hour car drive, singing at the top of my lungs (terribly, I'm so congested right now, not gonna stop me though lol), and having quarry brainrot. Who among the counselors do you think can sing well and who do you think can play an instrument?
I looove this question and I have to admit I haven’t thought about it that much so this is gonna be kind of off the cuff, instinctive stuff and I’m sure I’ll refine my opinions if others chime in (please!).
It’s kind of weird we never get any campfire singalong action in the game when there’s a guitar in Chris’s bedroom and he mentions Kumbaya, but maybe they’re tired of that from camp by the time the plot line picks up.

Miles obviously is a musician and Dylan’s the music guy so I’d imagine he’s musically inclined in some way. I’ve seen headcanons that he plays guitar and I could see that but I lean more toward thinking he would have taken piano lessons when he was younger and moved on to keyboard and adding on techie stuff like the Mellotron and Moog synth. I think he loves dials and buttons and weird sounds and he can sing but he’d rather fuck around in the noise. Any instrument he plays is gonna get a bit sad if he loses his hand but maybe he’d get more into sampling and remixing and looping computer generated beats as a result.
I think it would be funny if Jacob had a surprisingly angelic singing voice that was completely uncoached and no one ever expected out of him, sort of like Finn from Glee (RIP) but less auto-tuned. I think he’d be an acoustic guitar guy for sure just for the romance of it. Anyway, here’s “Wonderwall.”

Kaitlyn does not strike me as particularly musical though I headcanon that she and Jacob slay karaoke together. She just kind of shouts into the mic like a 90s riot grrl and sings Alanis or Joan Jett and kills.
Abi is so high school marching band nerd coded to me and I feel like she’s a total flute/piccolo girlie or else clarinet/oboe. Or maybe she plays violin in the school orchestra. Something sweet. She’s good but too nervous to perform or audition in front of people very much so it’s just a hobby she shares with people she trusts.
Emma I think would have a perfectly nice mid range singing voice that she’d wish was better. She probably started her influencer career recording Taylor Swift covers for YouTube but she’s a much better actress and dancer than she is a singer. Not quite triple threat material but she believes in herself so she’s trying.
Ryan has such a unique voice that I can’t decide if he definitely can sing or if he’s practically tone deaf. I kind of lean toward the latter. I imagine he hates his singing voice and rarely sings even for fun but if Dylan catches him singing or humming he’s like smitten times one million about it. I could see Ryan playing drums though, I’d imagine he has a good sense of rhythm.
Max, on the other hand, cannot carry a tune but sings ALL THE TIME anyway. And Laura cringes but finds it endearing all the same. He probably plays the ukulele. He just seems like the type.
Laura was a choir kid for sure and probably got solos in school plays and Max was accompanying her on ukulele and playing unnamed roles or else he was painting backdrops or something. We know Siobahn can sing and I feel like that would carry through with Laura for sure. I imagine them doing elaborate musical routines together on car rides even with their vastly different musical abilities.
Nick reminds me of a bassist I know who is maybe the weirdest human being alive. So that’s where I see him. He can sing a little but it’s definitely a backing vocals voice. I feel like he’d be in a stoner jam band just fucking around, playing the same song for an hour while both the band and audience are too high to know the difference.
Chris Hackett obviously plays guitar and Travis accompanies him on harmonica. Bobby plays blowing air over the lip of a jug and also cowbell.

Steve had made a note of it in the way that he makes a note of everyone he works with, felt a little old because he had been a dancer on the 1989 tour and now this baby is saying he was inspired by them, and then gotten distracted by the next girl. -In which neither of them is the pop star! They're backup dancers for pop star Sharon instead, which I think is very fun of me 🩷
When Emma Falls in Love (G) “Nice?” Kamala exclaims. “It’s way past nice! It’s the cutest thing ever because his bracelet had his phone number on it! He was hoping to ask you out!” Tony blinks. Steve Rogers, All-American good boy and quarterback extraordinaire, wants to throw his hat in the ring? He wouldn’t be the first person to toss his name out there, but most of them have just tried to DM him or tag him in their posts. No one’s shown the kind of thought and effort that Steve apparently put into his declaration. It’s a level of understanding and appreciation of who Tony is and everything he’s cultivated in his career that no one else has put in. It is, to use Kamala’s word, cute. -In your life, you'll do things greater than dating the boy on the football team... or maybe not? Anyway, this is just a very fluffy romance with instantly smitten Steve and Tony 💜

It’s the first Friday of the month, which means it’s Book Swap day. And you always love Book Swap day.
It’s something you and Steve started doing together not long after you’d graduated high school the previous year; you’d accidentally left your copy of Interview With the Vampire in Scoop’s Ahoy when you’d gone in one day, and when you’d come back the next day to see if anyone had returned it, you saw Steve sitting in a corner booth, feet propped up on the table and the spine bent in his hands as he flipped through the pages.
He’d looked up as you came in, making a beeline straight for him and your book, and he’d smiled that smile you’d heard about from all the girls at school before telling you that your choice in books was weird and how could anyone like this Lestat dude, anyway? You’d sat down across from him, and the of you spent close to an hour going back and forth about it until Robin Buckley had started yelling at Steve for slacking off and how he could flirt on his own time, thank you very much, since these little monster children need to be fed their daily sugar intake (Though Steve vehemently denied that he was flirting, and you had really hoped that it hadn’t looked like you had been flirting, because Steve Harrington? Not your type. At the time).
That was nearly a year ago, now, and the beginning of a friendship you’d come to cherish very much. Every other month without fail you and Steve had brought each other a book, ones you either liked yourselves or thought the other would like, to swap and annotate for each other, and then you’d each read the annotated copies when you’d finished. While Steve wasn’t a huge reader, as you’d come to learn, and it took him longer than he’d like to admit to finish most of the books you two talked about, he always seemed to enjoy the ones you’d given him.
You feel as though you’d gotten to know Steve through the books he’s given you; you’ve known each other, and of each other, for most of your lives as is wont to happen when you live in a town like Hawkins. Everyone knows everyone else and all of their business, so you’ve always been very much aware of who Steve Harrington is and a lot of what he’s done. Or, well, what people think he’s done.
But the image of Steve you’d had in school is more than a little different to the Steve you’ve gotten to know. It’d started out as just swapping books, but it led to grabbing coffee together to talk about those books, and then each other. You’d come visit him at work sometimes, first at Scoop’s Ahoy, and then Family Video when he and Robin switched jobs. Sometimes he’d surprise you at work, with a baked treat or your favourite drink.
Then he introduced you to the kids he babysits—though most of them are old enough to look after themselves—who idolize him in every way, and show it by teasing the hell out of him. You see how Steve is with them, warm and open and not at all the magnanimous dickhead you’d thought he was in school. Well, that you’d heard he was, anyway.
You’re glad he’s nothing like any of those rumours, that he’s your friend Steve—though the word friend has long since started causing a bit of an ache in your chest and a twist in your stomach, because the Steve who pressed The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe into your hands with a pink flush on his face while telling you he loved that book the most as a kid and even now; the Steve who read Jane Eyre and left the most hilarious comments about Mr Rochester in the margins along with some very questionable doodles—well, that Steve has taken over a rather large part of your life and your heart. Much more than that of a friend, but you’ll never admit that. Out loud to him, anyway.
You’d slowly fallen in love with Steve with each piece of his heart he’s shared with you through the books you’ve both read and discussed together. He has your heart completely, though he doesn’t know that—you’re friends, and that friendship is precious to you. You’re not going to risk that, not in case he doesn’t feel the same and you lose him forever. And as far as you know, he doesn’t feel the same way—he was just as friendly with you as he was with Robin, and you know he’d go to any lengths for the people he cares about. You’d love to be able to read more into the way he’ll answer your calls no matter the time, and the way he’s always standing so close to you, the way he hugs you… it’s completely platonic. So, you resigned yourself to friendship, to loving him silently through the books you shared together.
You walk into Family Video today, bag slung over your shoulder as the bell over the door rings. Robin is messing with one of the displays, a stack of tapes near her feet as she waves to you. Steve is at the front counter, and he immediately looks up from the computer. As soon as he sees that it’s you as you approach him, his face splits into a wide grin and he completely abandons his work to lean against the counter.
“If it isn’t my favourite customer,” he says, and you do your best to ignore the way his smile causes your chest to flutter and a smile to stretch across your own face.
“And if it isn’t my favourite video store employee,” you say, “oh, and you too, Steve.” He jaw drops for a second while Robin cackles. You lean forward on the counter as well.
“Why do you have to hurt me like that?” he asks, and you shrug while Robin keeps laughing.
“So… ready for Book Swap day?” you ask. You reach into your bag to grab your book. Steve, showing off his pretty pink lips as he smiles, reaches around to his back pocket, pulling out a small, worn green paperback with a redhead in a straw hat on the cover. Anne of Green Gables, it reads, as he slides the book over to you across the counter. You recognize it, and pick it up in one hand. You place your copy of Pride and Prejudice down in front of you with the other, sliding it in Steve’s direction.
You love that book; you had to read it for eleventh grade English, and it was one of those books that just stuck with you. You’d bought your own copy after you’d been made to return your copy to the school, and it’s held a special place on your bookshelf ever since. You’ve been waiting for the right time to swap it with Steve, and, well, no time like the present, right?
“What’s this?” he asks, picking it up and turning the book over in his hands. He scans the back, and you can see the way he catches his lip with his teeth as he takes in the description on the back before turning it back over to take in the cover illustration. “Pride and Prejudice, huh? Sounds familiar. Did we have to read that in school?”
“I did!” Robin interjects, trying to take the book from Steve’s hands. He holds it up over his head, trying to keep it out of her reach. She jumps twice to get it, before huffing and shoving the stack of VHS tapes she was working on in his direction. He sticks his tongue out at her, and she returns the favour with her middle finger resting on one of her cheeks before she heads off towards the back of the store.
“I’m going on break! Don’t spend all your time flirting, dingus!” she calls, and you see Steve roll his eyes as he sticks your book under the counter. It stings, just a little, but you swallow that down as far as you. You deposit his book into your bag, careful to mind the pages and make sure you don’t cause any damage. You both choose to ignore Robin’s comment.
“Anne of Green Gables? That’s a good choice,” you tell him, patting the outside of your bag. The smile from earlier comes back, though a bit smaller. That’s when the bell above the door chimes, signalling that someone has come into the store, and you turn to see old Mrs Powell making her way towards Steve with a smile on her face and Gone With the Wind clutched in her hand. You smile politely at her before winking at Steve and excusing yourself. Getting caught up with Mrs Powell is an hour you don’t want to spend, so you’re going to leave before you get trapped here, too.
“Call you tonight!” Steve calls, and you raise a hand in acknowledgement as you leave the store.
The first thing you notice when you sit down on your bed and open the book is Steve’s blocky handwriting on the cover page, stating ‘This book belongs to Steve Harrington! Hands off!’ and your heart warms at the sight.
You can imagine Steve, curled up in bed with a flashlight under his covers, reading this book to himself. Or, maybe on a rainy Sunday afternoon, hanging off the edge of his bed to read with his arms stretched out in front of him, mouthing the words as he reads them. You’d seen him do that before, both at work and when reading things when you’ve been out together, and you think it’s an endearing trait. Sometimes he’ll even whisper what he’s reading under his breath, which you pretend you don’t hear—you don’t want to give him any reason to stop doing it around you.
With that, you turn the pages and start reading the book.
You have an entire system worked out: one colour for quotes, another one for notes, and even these cute little puffy stickers and sticky tabs to mark the pages. You’ve got everything you need scattered across your bed as you read, so you can reach for anything as you mark up the book. Which you do, quite liberally, as you read about Anne Shirley and how she comes to live in Avonlea.
The further you get in the book, the more you can see why Steve loves it. The pure, childlike innocence and joy, the saccharine sweetness of the trials and tribulations that Anne faces at home and at school and in the community at large. Anne is so passionate and so full of drive and joy, and the way she sees the world, so bright and romantic and full of adventure, and she doesn’t lose that as she grows and matures; you can see how Steve would be drawn to that, drawn to this story, and it makes your heart ache in a wonderfully bittersweet way for him, knowing what he’s been through with his family, with love, with the people he’d called friends before the kids and Robin—and you—had come into his life.
You also completely understand where Gilbert Blythe is coming from, loving someone like Anne Shirley. Though he’s a little more obvious with it than you hope you are. You understand what it’s like to love someone like Anne, someone who wears their heart on their sleeve, who hates so much about themselves but still manages to see the beauty in the world and in others, and holding this book in your hands, this small, worn, dogeared and well-loved paperback, you feel as though you’re holding a piece of Steve’s heart that few others have gotten to see. He’s trusted you with this, and you only hope you can keep that piece of him with you in any way you can, for as long as you can.
You take your time annotating the book—you want to make sure you give it the attention it deserves, and to let Steve know exactly what you think. It takes you a few days to finish, but you’re happy with the end result.
You even make sure to place a little gold star sticker next to your favourite quote: "Well, that is another hope gone. ‘My life is a perfect graveyard of buried hopes.’ That's a sentence I read in a book once, and I say it over to comfort myself whenever I'm disappointed in anything."
You flip back to the cover page, where Steve’s name is still written proclaiming ownership of the book. Before you can think better of it and chicken out, you scrawl, ‘Lovingly annotated by’ under where Steve has signed his name, and write your own name in your favourite colour of pen. You also add a small heart next to it before you shut the book.
You call Steve the next morning, letting him know you’ve finished Anne of Green Gables; he’s still only halfway through Pride and Prejudice, so you wait another week, as patiently as you can, until he calls you and tells you he’s finished, too. Though he calls you at nearly ten at night when you’re already in your pyjamas, so you agree to swap back the next day.
So that leads you to bring Anne of Green Gables with you to Family Video just after noon; it’s just Steve today, no Robin in sight as you push the door open and he greets you from behind the counter. The store looks pretty empty as well. Steve is playing with a slinky on the counter, having stacked video tapes up like stairs to push it down.
“Keith’s in the office pretending to do paperwork,” he tells you by way of greeting, pushing the silver metal with a long finger. That doesn’t surprise you, from what you know about Keith. You’re glad the cheesy-fingered guy isn’t out here right now. You take Anne of Green Gables out of your bag and place it next to the VHS stairs, and Steve reaches under the counter to grab Pride and Prejudice and put it on the counter.
“So… what did you think?” you ask, and Steve shakes his head. His hair flops down onto his forehead, which is a little unusual for him, but the sight makes your stomach tingle at how cute it is and how well it suits him before he’s pushing it back into place.
“Nope, you gotta read it! I’m not spoiling anything.” It’s something the two of you do every time when you swap your books back, and it’s worth it to hear him laugh. Though his laugh today was just a little more hollow than usual, and his shoulders are up near his ears. There’s tension in his body that isn’t normally there, not around you. “Just… read it all the way through before we talk about it, okay? And really think about it. Take all the time you need.”
“Okay… did you hate it? Is that what’s going on?” You scan his face, trying to pick out any details that might show that he didn’t like your choice. Which you wouldn’t be mad about—not everyone loves every book, even the classics, but you really hope you didn’t make him feel like he was forced to read something he completely hated.
“What? No!” Steve is very quick to insist that, and you fix him with a stare. He sighs, bringing a hand up to run through his messy brown hair once again, before he starts fiddling with the slinky. “I mean, no, I didn’t hate it. I just… had a lot more to say than I thought.” He pauses for a moment. “Actually, you know what,” he reaches for the book in front of him, fidgeting slightly where he’s standing, “I think I need to edit my notes, lemme see that.”
“Nope!” You quickly snatch the book up off the counter before he can grab it, holding it tight against your chest and moving away from the counter. “No take backs!” He makes a half-hearted attempt to take it from you, his warm, calloused fingertips scraping over the skin of your hand, before you’re dropping the book into your bag.
“Don’t hate me for what I said. Promise?” You can’t imagine ever hating Steve Harrington. You don’t think it’s possible, looking into his deep brown eyes that somehow still twinkle under the fluorescent lights. You don’t even hate the horrid green polyester vest he’s wearing; somehow, Steve always manages to look good, even in terrible lighting in a polo that clashes with his vest, even with a crease between his eyebrows and his soft pink lips turned down slightly, and it sends adoration thrumming through your body and down your spine.
“Steve, I could never hate you, I promise,” you say. Not when I love you as much as I do. The words dance on the tip of your tongue as his eyes search your face for any hint of a lie. He must find none, because he grabs his book and shoves it into his back pocket. He almost looks as if he’s about to say something else, his mouth opening slightly—
—and then the bell above the door rings, signalling customers have arrived, and you call out your goodbyes before you turn around and hightail it out of the store.
You want to crack open your book as soon as you get home, and you put the book on your bed so you can do so, but then you notice that your closet needs to be straightened out, and then there’s some laundry that needs doing, and oh, just how many cups have you let pile up in your room? So you take those into the kitchen and then get busy doing the dishes and before you know it, it’s already dark out and you still haven’t started reading.
But you can’t put it off any longer, so you finally curl up in your bed to crack open your book.
Steve doesn’t disappoint; he usually always has a lot to say in the margins of the books he annotates for you, and that remains true with Pride and Prejudice. You can’t help but grin to yourself as you read through what he has to say.
‘Wait… so she got herself sick JUST so Bingley could take care of her? Wow, that still worked even back then. Jane is playing to win. Gotta remember that.’ He’s even drawn a little winky face next to this comment.
Almost as soon as Mr Wickham is introduced, Steve is commenting on him. ‘Man, this Wickham guy is suspicious… I don’t like him.’ Steve is perceptive (in most aspects, at least in things not relating to the heart), and it makes you happy that he caught on that early that Wickham is trouble.
‘Charlotte deserves better. First Mr Collins proposes to her best friend and then he settles for her? I don’t like him.’ That is definitely something you agree with. You continue reading through, scanning the text and paying attention to Steve’s comments, making note of any questions he asks. That is, until you get to the point where Mr Darcy first confesses to Elizabeth.
“You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you.”
The quote is underlined in red pen, quite heavy handed, but there’s no notes next to it in the margins. Which is odd for Steve; normally he’s got a lot to say, and he’ll usually take notes or write any questions he has for you so you can answer them when you meet up after having finished reviewing your annotated books. You’re a little caught off guard, but you continue reading.
A little further along in the book, you can see the amount of exclamation points increase as Steve is proven right not only by Mr Darcy’s letter, but also with what happens with the elopement. ‘The scandal! The outrage! How could Lydia have run away with Wickham? Dude’s a real jag off. I totally called it, go back and check!!’
And it goes back to normal from there. There are even some doodles of Mr Darcy slapping Wickham in the margins whenever Wickham is mentioned after that, which are definitely something you’d frame if you could. What Steve lacks in artistic talent he makes up for in enthusiasm.
But then it happens again. The red pen comes back twice near the very end of the book, when Mr Darcy and Elizabeth are discussing their feelings for one another both before and after getting engaged. Two quotes from Mr Darcy are once again underlined, several times, with no other comments.
“My affections and wishes are unchanged, but one word from you will silence me on this subject forever.”
And then,
“I cannot fix on the hour, or the spot, or the look, or the words, which laid the foundation. It is too long ago. I was in the middle before I knew that I had begun.”
Your heart starts beating a little faster in your chest as you read and re-read the words. Maybe he just loves those quotes. Maybe he’s going to steal them to say to the girls he asks out; the thought isn’t something you’d like to think about, but it’s entirely possible. They’re also the last parts that have been annotated, at least until the very end of the book.
“That was better than I thought it’d be, but don’t tell Robin,” Steve’s handwriting is scrawled underneath the final paragraph of the book. It’s written in red pen, the same shade as the quotes he’d underlined with no notes. “She’ll never let me live it down. But thank you for sharing this with me. I can see why you love it. And, well… hopefully now you can see how I feel about you.”
Your breath catches in your throat as you read and re-read the words ‘hopefully now you can see how I feel about you’ because… are you imagining things? You and Steve are just friends, no matter how you might feel… but he wrote this note in that same red pen. You’re imagining things. You have to be. You flip back to the quotes that stuck out to you, the ones with no notes next to them, and then back to Steve’s note. And it feels like something clicks.
Oh.
You drop the book in your hands. You look over at your nightstand, seeing your alarm clock and that it’s currently just past midnight. You grab the phone that sits on your nightstand, picking it up and dialling Steve’s number before bringing the receiver up to your ear. You don’t know if Steve’s parents are home and if you could be waking them up. But you have to know.
It takes an almost agonizing three rings before someone on the other end picks up, and you’re really hoping it’s not Mr Harrington because that’s not a conversation you really want to have right now.
“Hello?” Thankfully it’s Steve who answers, his voice a little raspy, and it crosses your mind briefly that he might have been sleeping. That’s something you’ll worry about later, though, because you need to know.
“Is it true?” you ask, and there’s silence on the line for a few seconds. Steve doesn’t ask what you’re talking about.
“You finally finished it, huh? You’re slower at reading than me, and that’s saying something,” he says, and while you can tell he’s trying to keep his tone light, the words come out strained, almost forced. It’s almost as if he’s waiting for something to drop, for you to say some magic words you haven’t quite worked out in your mind. But all you can think of is what he wrote in the book sitting in front of you, and how it’s causing a bubble to grow in your chest, filling you with hope and fear and just a bit of dread, while your heart hammers into it from the other side, wanting to hit your ribs with how hard it’s beating.
“Steve.” Your tone silences any other comments he might have had, and you can feel the bubble threatening to burst in your chest, to bring you up or knock you down. You have to know. You have to ask. “Is it true?”
It’s silent for a beat. Then another. Then another. And then you hear Steve take a breath. “Will you hate me if I say yes?”
Your heart stutters in your chest and the bubble is getting bigger and tighter as hope replaces the fear, but maybe you’ll worry about any medical problems you might be developing later because that’s dangerously close to a confession.
“Only if you don’t tell me to my face.” You’re mostly joking when you say that, but you hear the jingling of keys on the other end, and the loud thump of his footsteps as he moves into the hardwood hallway from the carpet in his room.
“Wait for me?” he asks, though there’s more than just those three words hanging between you. There’s so much that you want to say. That you’ve been waiting for an achingly long time, that you would wait forever and a day if it meant being with him. That he’s always going to be worth waiting for. You’ll tell him that when he’s sitting in front of you.
“Trellis on the left side is still broken,” you warn, and you hear his laugh. It eases the pressure in your chest, even if just a little.
“Be there soon,” he promises, and you believe him. You say your goodbyes, hanging up the phone. You sit for a second, taking in the sight of your room, before deciding that Steve has been in your room many times, you still need to straighten up a bit. You need to do something that you can focus on until he gets here.
You’re not completely convinced this isn’t just an extremely vivid dream, even when you trip and stumble forward getting off the bed. It feels like a dream, like one you never want to wake up from, thinking that Steve could return your feelings. That he could be in love with you, too, and that this could work.
True to his word, you can hear Steve’s car pulling up on the driveway in record time, tires crunching and headlights flashing momentarily through the curtains you hadn’t closed yet. You have just enough time to smooth out the blankets on your bed before there’s a tapping at your window. You move over to unlock and open it, sliding it up and seeing Steve sitting on the other side.
“Hi,” he greets, and you move to the side so he can climb in. He makes it almost all the way in, enough that you think he might actually stick the landing, when one of his shoes gets caught on the window sill and he tumbles face first onto the floor. He’s quick to spring up, though, shaking it off and doing his best to grin at you. You do your best to smile back, though you’re pretty sure it doesn’t look quite right at how quickly Steve’s own smile drops. “I guess, uh… I guess we need to talk, huh?”
“We do,” you confirm. You can understand Steve’s apparent apprehension; this is going to cross a line that you know can never be uncrossed. Once you fall over the precipice, you don’t know how far you’ll fall or where you’ll land, and it’s always something you’ve tried to avoid. But maybe you don’t need to avoid that anymore. Maybe you don’t need to be afraid as Steve extends his hand to gently, hesitantly, take one of yours. It’s not the first time you’ve held hands, but you’re noticing just how calloused his hand is, how it’s just a little clammy and he’s got a few scars that you can brush your thumb over.
He slips his shoes off and leaves them under your window, and the two of you walk towards your bed. He sits cross legged and you mirror him. He seems to realize he’s still holding your hand because he lets it go, and you mourn the loss of warmth and the feeling of his skin under yours while he gathers his thoughts. You can almost see the gears turning in his head, turning his feelings into thoughts and those thoughts into words and sentences and sentiments that he can share with you. You give him the space to do so, because even though you’re dying to know what he’s feeling and to confirm that he meant what you thought he meant, you know that sometimes it can take him a bit longer than you to verbalize and express what he means, and that’s totally okay.
“I can’t stop thinking about you. No matter how hard I try, you’re always on my mind,” he says. He shifts, fidgeting slightly, as he gestures with his hands while he speaks. You watch them for a moment before your eyes make their way back to his own. “And I thought it was just, y’know, as a friend. And I was happy thinking that way for a while, but the more we’ve hung out and the better I’ve gotten to know you, the more I realized that it’s not just as a friend.” He sighs, bringing his hands down to start picking at the blanket on your bed. “Robin’s been on my ass about it for ages, which has been kind of annoying, but I didn’t want to ruin what we have. What if you didn’t feel the same way? What if… what if I say something and we can’t go back to what we have now?”
It’s as if he’s got a direct line tapped into your own thoughts, like he’s plucked a cassette tape from your brain and popped it in your boom box to start playing your thoughts, your feelings, and your fears for him. You’re not sure you’ve been breathing this entire time; while Steve has left you breathless on occasion, this is a little different. Because this is Steve admitting that he feels the same way you do, with his big brown eyes shining in the soft orange light your lamp is emitting.
“But I realized I don’t really want to go back. I want this. I want you. You’re the best thing that’s ever happened to me.” The words come out quickly, as if they’re stumbling over his tongue and his lips to race out to you. The bubble in your chest finally pops, warmth spreading through your chest, up to warm your necks and your cheeks, and down to warm your fingers and your toes. Steve feels the same way you do. He wants you. “And when you gave me that book, which was actually much better than I was expecting it to be, I knew that was how I wanted to tell you. Darcy just happened to word it much better than I could, so I just kinda piggybacked off him so I could tell you how I feel and hope you don’t hate me for it.”
“I could never hate you, Steve.” You’re very quick to try and reassure him (though you’re also sure you’re reassuring yourself that this is real as well), your hands finding his to stop them picking at your comforter. It’s your turn to talk now, and you focus on how warm Steve’s hands are held in your own to keep you grounded in this moment. “God, I’ve been so scared because I feel the same way, and I didn’t want to lose you, but I didn’t think you’d ever feel like that about me.” Steve’s face immediately lights up, any and all creases and frown lines being smoothed away to make room for joy that radiates like your own personal sun. And his joy is infectious because you can feel yourself smiling, too.
“You really… you feel the same way about me?” he asks, and you nod. Because the more he says it, the more you two talk about it, the easier it comes out. Yes, you’re so in love with Steve, and now you know he’s in love with you. Steve shuffles closer to you on the bed, close enough that you can feel his warm breath fanning across your already warm cheeks.
“Can I kiss you now?” he asks, voice barely above a whisper. You voice aloud your consent, and then he’s leaning forward and pressing a soft, chaste kiss to your lips. His lips are slightly chapped, and you can taste the bite of spearmint on his tongue—you didn’t think he had time to brush his teeth before leaving his house with how quickly he got there, so he most likely had some Tic Tacs that you know he keeps in his glove compartment before he got here. The idea of Steve eating some mints before climbing up the side of your house is so endearing to you, because of course he would, and you smile against his lips as your hands squeeze his own.
This kiss is nothing like you’d imagined; there’s no huge bursting of fireworks, there’s no burning desire to jump each other (on your end, at least), but there is a sense of comfort and familiarity. This is Steve, your Steve, whose nose bumps against yours a little awkwardly but whose lips fit with your own like they were always meant to be there. And boy, did you hope they would always fit with yours from now on.
However, the need for air soon has the two of you breaking apart, though Steve presses his forehead to yours and brings one of your hands up to press small kisses to your knuckles.
“That was… wow,” he says, a breathy laugh tumbling out of his mouth. “How come we waited so long to do this?”
“Because we were both too worried about being a good friend to let ourselves be happy.” That gets a real chuckle out of Steve, which quickly turns into a wonderful, full laugh from the both of you. You sit in silence for a moment once the laughter subsides, and Steve presses a kiss to your forehead before he lets go of your hands.
“I’m gonna take you on a real date,” he promises, crossing his hand over his heart. “Dinner, a movie, anything you want! You name it and we’ll do it. It’ll be the best first date you’ve ever been on.”
“As long as it’s with you, there’s no way it won’t be.” You see the way his cheeks flush at those words, and it fills you with a sense of pride to know that you have that effect on him—and that you get to see this, just you, with the guy you’re in love with. Wow, you don’t know if you’ll ever get tired of thinking that.
(Steve leaves out your bedroom window not long after, but promises he’ll call you in the morning; you watch him nearly fall down the trellis on the right, which you think might be broken now too, and see Steve dust himself off and get back in his car to drive home. Once his headlights have long since vanished into the distance, you head back to bed and pick up your new favourite book, one that you’ll read from time and time again when you want to remind yourself of how loved you are by Steve Harrington.)

Chevalier's Sequel Chapter 8 Spoilers

As soon as he heard my footsteps, the man turned his gaze towards me and smiled.
???: “We meet again.”
Emma: “You are...umm...”
The man had mysterious eyes that captured the starry sky and silver hair that shone when illuminated by the light.
Although he had an unforgettable appearance, I couldn’t remember it.
Azel: “I’m Azel. It’s no wonder you don’t remember me.”
Azel: “After all, this is a dream within a dream, something meant to be forgotten.”
(That’s right, Azel!)
Somewhere in the depths of my mind, fragments of memories flickered faintly.
I could only remember bits and pieces, but I had a similar dream before.
Azel: “By the way, you’re not from Tanzanite, right?”
Azel: “Then there’s no point in being overly polite.”
The gentle atmosphere from earlier suddenly disappeared, and his affectionate smile turned cold.
(He’s as quick to change as ever.)
Azel: “Anyway, did something happen to you?”
Emma: “What do you mean?”
Azel: “Look at the rose.”
He beckoned me, and I quickly walked towards the glass-domed rose.
It looked like a beautiful gemstone similar to a rose used when selecting the king, but something was strange.
Emma: “This is...”
(Some of the rose’s petals are discolored.)
Emma: "Why...?"
(I have no idea.)
(What does the rose's discoloration indicate in the first place?)
I sought an answer in his mystical eyes but was met with a sigh.

Azel: "There's no way I would know. Besides, I have no intention of listening to your troubles."
Azel: "I'm tired of working day in and day out, so let me at least rest in this dream."
(Weird. This is a dream, so he's not supposed to exist.)
Emma: ".........."
Azel: ".........."
Azel: "If you want to think about something, go somewhere else. You're distracting me."
Emma: "But this is my dream."
Azel: "I'm having this dream too."
(This guy is so unreasonable.)
(But I don't think pondering over the rose will lead me to any answers.)
After all, this was just a dream.
I still love Chevalier just the same.
As long as my feelings remained unchanged, maybe I didn't need to worry about it.
(If that's the case, I should focus on something else.)
Emma: "Are you from Tanzanite?"

I asked to distract myself, and he nodded.
(It's strange. I've never met anyone from Tanzanite before, so why does he appear in my dreams?)
(Maybe it's the influence of something I read.)
While I understand that this dream had nothing to do with reality, if the person standing before me was really from Tanzanite, then I need to worry.
Emma: “Speaking of Tanzanite, didn’t you guys recently form a tripartite alliance? Why did that happen?”
Azel: “I never thought I’d discuss politics in a dream. Even if I tell you, you will forget about it.”
Emma: “I still want to hear it.”
Azel: “Alright. I’ll tell you. Consider this my apology since I’m intruding into your dream.”
For some reason, he returned to using honorifics and smiled mysteriously as if a halo was shining behind him.
Azel: “Let’s just say it was due to divination.”
Emma: “Divination?”
Azel: “Yes. In Tanzanite, divination is everything.”

Azel: “Those foolish people, ahem, those devout believers, follow God’s guidance.”
(Ugh, this sounds so fishy.)
(But they say that dreams reflect our subconscious, so maybe I secretly think that way?)
(It’s rude to jump to conclusions, so next time, I’ll study Tanzanite properly.)
Azel: “Although, Achroite and Kogyoku are far more sensible strategic alliances than Tanzanite.”
Azel: “That’s all I can tell you.”
Emma: “..........”
I took a breath, and the divine light that shone from behind him and his gentle smile vanished like an illusion.
Azel: "Since you're worried about the alliance, are you perhaps related to the royal family?"
Emma: "My fiancé is the King."
Azel: "The King's woman..."
Azel: "Oh, I see. You're the famous 'Belle' from Beauty and the Beast."

Azel: "I see. I've heard about your love story."
Azel: "It really is a curse. But I didn't expect it to be a curse involving the country's fate."
(A curse, huh?)
(I remember he said that love is a curse.)
Emma: "I still don't understand."
(I have never felt love as a curse.)
(And never will.)
(So why do I feel so confused?)
Azel: "Think about it."
Azel: "Originally, there was no benefit for the royal family to marry a commoner."
Azel: "And yet, knowing this, the King of Rhodolite chose you to be his wife."

Azel: "That sounds like a story the people would love, but what about reality?"
Azel: "A love affair with a commoner is usually harmful to the king."
Emma: "That's not true!"
Azel: "It happens often. There were stories of kings who destroyed themselves by being in love."
(Chevalier said the same thing when we first met.)
However, the Chevalier now admits that love brings growth.
I feel that way every day too.
Azel: "You stubbornly deny that love is a curse, but can that man choose his country when the time comes?"
Emma: "He can. Prince Chevalier is that kind of person."
(Even if he loves me, that will not change because Chevalier was born a king.)
Azel: "You don't understand the horror of love, do you?"
However, Azel shook his head confidently.
Azel: "The same can be said about you. A queen must prioritize her country's interests alongside the king."
Azel: "When the time comes, can you choose your country's interests?"
Emma: "Of course, I can."
Azel: "Easy for you to say."
Azel: "Let me make a prediction. You will definitely not be able to choose."
(That's not true.)
I tried to respond, but my vision suddenly became distorted.
(Huh?)

Okay. Okay. Hear me out. Because I'm Greek mythology trash.
An Odyssey AU for Miraculous Ladybug. Think about it. Adrien is the most Odysseus character I've ever seen. Fake piano playing? Hiding in a fountain? I mean, it practically writes itself. And Marinette as Penelope is equally as perfect - she creates, but she's smart enough to pull it all apart at the end of the day.
Now here is where things get a little strange: Telemachus. Being an avid MLB fanfiction reader (and ignoring all of seasons 4 and 5), I'm very well aware that Adrienette's kids are supposedly going to be Louis, Hugo, and Emma. Now tell me, what could Emma be short for? That's right, Telemachus. So hear me out - Adrien was drafted into the war *Before* Emma was born, so he never knew he had a daughter and his last request for his child was to name them Telemachus. But when she was born a girl, she was nicknamed Emma. Hugo and Louis don't exist in this version, obviously.
So we have our main family, what about everyone else? Well, we have Adrian's two crewmates, Polites and Eurilochus. Or in this case, Nino and Felix. Nino is his friend who fought at his side and is tragically killed along the ride back, causing Adrian to go into a spiral of grief, whereas Felix is his somewhat suspicious and angry second in command who can't understand why Adrien is being so reckless with his own life and that of the crew to get back to his wife and child. So eventually he starts straight up sabotaging the trip to try and get through to Adrien, which doesn't ever work because when Adrien is in love, he doesn't notice other people.
As for the people they meet on their travels:
Circe is Lila - this one feels pretty self explanatory, except for the fact that Lila would never care that much about the nymphs around her, so I'm thinking she lives alone on the island and basically functions as a non-water siren - she draws men in with comfort and beauty and then turns them into pigs.
The wind god Aeolus is just Trixx - they're weird and whimsical and would absolutely give someone a bag of wind with the word "gold" written on it.
Calypso is Chloe, left there alone on this island for "protection" from her overbearing father, a minor deity. Again, this just kind of makes sense in my brain. And she gets a little bit of a redemption when she finally willingly lets Adrien go home.
When the crew of the ship go down into the underworld, they meet "Tyresius", who in this case is Master Fu. Weird cryptic old wise guy who's maybe dead? Yeah. That fits.
And finally we have the deities themselves. Like I said, Trixx is already accounted for, so we have three main ones - Posideon, Athena, and Hermes.
Posideon is most definitely ShadowMoth - not really any meaning behind this, we're just making him mysterious and powerful and angry at Adrien for seemingly no reason. But he's doing his best to keep this man from reaching home, possibly because early in the journey, Adrien was instrumental in killing a sentimonster, which canonically is kind of a piece of the creator.
Athena and Hermes are two of a pair - Tikki and Plagg, obviously. Wisdom and trickery, sounds just about right to me.

i can’t stop imaging myself being transported into tokyo revengers. though, personally, i believe it would be bitter sweet.
TOKYO REVENGERS X MALE READER
i’d love to imagine meeting takemichi, and confiding in him that i know about his power, that, i too, have a secret. i would tell him that i’m not even from this universe. he thinks time leaping 12 years is weird? try telling him you’re from another reality (basically) where he’s an anime.
to sum up my thoughts (i wrote 13 paragraphs before deleting it bc this is suppose to just be a ramble lmfao, maybe i’m uploading it later and get your guys inputs) i just feel like i would try to be the sunshine guard dog protector, y’know? not necessarily swoop in to save takemichi (tho, i’d definitely swoop in to beat some characters asses just bc i have a personal vendetta) because damn! look at how badass and hot takemichi is, whenever he fights?! (that ass. thiccimichi 😩😼)
now, here’s where my heart aches and my brain fries from overthinking. do i tell takemichi that i watched the anime (read the manga too) and know who will die in the end? do i tell him that i know of the anime but haven’t seen it or read the manga?
MAJOR SPOILERS FOR TOKYO REVENGERS ANIME AND MANGA!!! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!!
so, we know that in chapter 275 of the manga (probably season 5 in the anime if we’re lucky) takemichi ends up dying by mikey’s hand, a blade through his chest (heart? stomach? idk i haven’t read the manga in a few months. i sobbed hysterically over his death and refused to open the manga back up. that was until chapter 276 came out, how foolish of me to believe takemichi wouldn’t stand back up like he always does. what a true mc)
funny enough, by using mikey’s hand, he’s able to time travel him and mikey, not just 12 years, but back to when they were kids (i think they were 8 or somewhere around there). thus they are able to help each other create their perfect ending.
though… this “perfect ending” can’t happen unless the characters who died stay dead. shinichiro, baji, emma, izana, draken. with these deaths, mikey indulges in his “dark impulses” and thus the kanto manji gang and toman gen 2 end up fighting to lead to takemichi’s death and end with the perfect book closing page.
it’s unfortunate. it makes me tear up, sob, want to throw up (maybe throw myself out the window) but everything needs to happen. not only the deaths but takemichi’s mental health diminishing needs to happen to. this (others teaching him how to fight and his visions) helps takemichi in the last battle to dodge, punch and get close to mikey.
though, how easily takemichi forgives?! boy just smiles off his pain and forgives others, especially in the final chapter??? he just has his beautiful dopey smile on his face when mikey recognized him and then they ride off into the sunset to save their future??? hell. no. i need everyone to put their fists up, stand in a line, and eat my fucking fist.
i need a takemichi villain arc series. would someone be willing to make that for me? what do you want? a cookie? therapy? a hug? emotional and mental stability? no mommy and daddy issues? (i can’t provide the last two unfortunately, still trying to figure that shit out myself lmfaooo. though, my dms are always open. i love chatting with people and sharing dark humor. muah!)
then again, this is why i whole heartedly admire takemichi. he may not be physically strong like the others but as mikey says, he’s incredibly mentally strong. he gets back up. he stays standing. he’s determined and won’t fall until he wins. he’s too kind. i love him so much guys you don’t understandddd. hina, please share, fuck i am on my knees, foaming at the mouth and barking.
ugh :( it’s okay michi. you get your perfect future, though, are you truly happy and at peace? just keep smiling, okay? anywhooo, you know, i could treat you better anyway! xoxo 😼���😽

Androgynous by The Replacements: this song honestly makes me tear up sometimes, even tho its purely joyful, because it makes me think about how its a song from the 80s that has more kindness and love for genderqueer people than most people do 40 years later. Human Fly by The Cramps: I've been listening to a lot of rockabilly/oldhead goth rock recently and I'm loving the cramps! I've only really heard the big hits until recently, but Human Fly is definitely my stand-out favourite, I love songs that are kinda nasty and maggoty or more conceptual or goofy! The Price Is Right Theme Song by Antarctigo Vespucci: I'm a little over listening to indie emo at the moment so I do frequently skip this when it comes on shuffle, but the lyricism is honestly heartbreaking (5/10) Favourite line: Oh my lord, I wish that I didn't know they'll still make TV shows long after I go.
Big Bird by AJJ: I have thoughts feelings comments and critiques of AJJ, but I can't deny that if you want to be in a dangerously bad mood it hits. it completely hits. and I think its interesting that they make songs about taboo intrusive thoughts and criticisms they have of the world, even if i dont always love the song they make in the end (6/10) Favourite line: So I bought a knife / I am a knife / I am a Knife Man
Arty Boy by Flight Facilities ft. Emma Louise: a real vibey party song about being inexplicably into the guy taking photos and smoking at the function instead of dancing - to me it reads as a little comphet, or a little bit bisexual, because the way Emma Louise is singing about the ladies is a lil sus (7/10) Favourite line: And all the girls must be models here, sipping up on margaritas / Twist their bodies so beautiful, making shapes with the music

Let’s have Nick bullying hours! (Or just talk about him without bullying, but how could we possibly??) How do you think he ended up in this job, cooking at a camp in New York, all the way from Australia? What’s the weirdest shit he did over the summer? If we switched someone else out for him as the wolf bait, who should it be and what would he do in their place?
gods please, i love bullying this weirdo
so i do think a lot about how he got here & i have a minor hc that his parents have a pretty demanding job with cushy salaries & he moved in maybe middle school/early high school (bc he has NO clue how to talk to Humans, or maybe he was homeschooled). if Jacob misses the qte to catch his phone, Nick is immediately like "i'll pay for that, im so sorry". obviously he SHOULD, he broke it, why does he do this, but idk it just sticks with me. i would never risk someone else's property, ESP bc i could never afford to replace it if i fucked up. idk. Nick is fucking weird. anyway so i think his parents moved to New York for their job & he's breaking out of his shell, going to camp with other young adults his age
over camp, he's a fucking nightmare. at least ten kids are in on a bet that he's an alien. two others are convinced he's possessed. sometimes he just stands over whatever he's preparing for dinner, completely still, staring at the food without blinking. it doesn't even look like he's breathing. five minutes later, he's totally fine. he sings different words to the camp song every time & it's never the right ones. sometimes he eats raw onion when he's chopping it up. he's never tasted sweet potato. he also stores jars of marinara in the freezer. one counselors swears to god they saw him snap a twig in half between his teeth during a nature walk & another one says he ate a whole acorn
if we could wolf-swap someone, i do think it would be interesting to actually see infected!Abi. the conflict between her, Nick & Emma would've meant a lil more maybe if instead of getting pissy, whiny, aggressive Nick, we could get choices & steadily see Abi get more forceful about if he rlly likes her, asking Kaitlyn why she made that dare when she KNEW what would happen, starting to speak up for herself before it gets too far & she turns (& decapitates nick <3). maybe that's basic but both of those characters felt kind of wasted so :( swapies :) also i feel like Abi should've gotten an opportunity to grow more than just "nervous & unsure & hiding" beyond choosing to either shoot or die
in her place, Nick for sure wouldn't shoot, he's a bitch. (just kidding. kinda.) but honestly i don't even know what he would do. Abi doesn't get to do much but hiding the storm shelter doesn't seem like his thing either. if Emma's in the van, all four of them prolly go to the scrapyard together, which kind of changes the whole thing

Northanger Abbey Readthrough, Ch 15
We hear from Isabella's other sister that their ride was, "the most delightful scheme in the world" but it actually sounds rather dull. Do you think a family dinner with the Thorpes is just them insulting each other and trying to one-up everyone? Because that is what it seems like... Isabella has news:
“Yes, my dear Catherine, it is so indeed; your penetration has not deceived you. Oh, that arch eye of yours! It sees through everything.” Catherine replied only by a look of wondering ignorance.
Arch eye! Oh Isabella. You have to love how ridiculous she is all of the time.
Love Isabella as she might, Catherine is not prepared to love her above her own family:
“You will be so infinitely dearer to me, my Catherine, than either Anne or Maria: I feel that I shall be so much more attached to my dear Morland’s family than to my own.” This was a pitch of friendship beyond Catherine.
Which is good for her. Catherine will not pretend to love someone above those she loves dearly. Not even in jest.
Isabella, who really seems to believe that James is rich, goes on about her "modest" desires, “For my own part,” said Isabella, “my wishes are so moderate that the smallest income in nature would be enough for me. Where people are really attached, poverty itself is wealth; grandeur I detest: I would not settle in London for the universe. A cottage in some retired village would be ecstasy. There are some charming little villas about Richmond.” Now Richmond is mentioned in two other Austen novels, it is where Henry Crawford is staying during his affair with Maria in Mansfield Park and where the Churchills in Emma stay during the final weeks of Mrs. Churchill's illness.
Henry Crawford's Admiral uncle has a cottage in Twickenham, which is near Richmond, if you want to know the sort of people who stayed in that area. I'm not British, but this is how close modern Richmond and Twickenham are, just for added context:

Anyway, according to what I have read, Richmond was a rich person's playground in Regency England, so this is a hint at the real aspirations of Miss Thorpe. Richmond is certainly not a "village" and the cottages in it would likely be Robert Ferrars McMansions. Catherine doesn't really catch this clue, she only protests about distance.
This is so cute:
Catherine wished to congratulate him, but knew not what to say, and her eloquence was only in her eyes. From them, however, the eight parts of speech shone out most expressively, and James could combine them with ease.
Gives me some hope for our boy James, seems he does really know his sister, even if he's been giving her a hard time.
Mrs. Thorpe is so delighted by the engagement and parental consent that she must be convinced by John's assessment of the Morland family's wealth (or the Allens' wealth as promised to James). As far as she knows, Isabella has won the lottery, but of course we know disappointment is on the horizon...
Then the Thorpe family plays this weird game where they won't tell the two other sisters about the engagement, to which Catherine is basically like, "What the fuck? This is mean." Catherine’s simple feelings, this odd sort of reserve seemed neither kindly meant, nor consistently supported; and its unkindness she would hardly have forborne pointing out... This reminds me a lot of the scene in Emma where Emma and Mrs. Elton both visit the revealed-to-be-engaged Jane Fairfax and they both strongly hint that they know without outright saying so. Within a family, however, it does seem super weird to "conceal" it.
John's proposal is so vague and inarticulate that I can't even blame Catherine for not understanding it at all. And her answers! When she says, "But I never sing." that is basically a rejection, even if she doesn't know it! She also continues to be modest and honest in the face of flattery:
“Oh! dear, there are a great many people like me, I dare say, only a great deal better. Good morning to you.”... “Perhaps we may; but it is more than I ever thought of. And as to most matters, to say the truth, there are not many that I know my own mind about.”
Catherine returns to the Allens to learn that they have not been as oblivious as herself, but actually expected an engagement all along. Poor dear! The last to know everything.
She also gives the most general replies ever. I love when John asks if she'll be glad to see him and she's all, "Oh I'm glad to see anyone." How Thorpe could have thought she accepted him is beyond me, well except that he doesn't care what the truth is at all.
Mrs. Allen complaining that James did not carry her compliments to the Skinners and Morlands reminds me of Knightley's line in Emma:
"Have you any thing to send or say, besides the ‘love,’ which nobody carries?”
So happy this is the last we shall see of John Thorpe! Good riddance!
