Brigid Deity Guide
Tumblr media
Who is Brigid?
Translated as “The Exalted One” in Old Irish, Brigid is a Gaelic-Celtic Goddess of many things including fire, poetry, fertility, spring, and craftsmanship. Other spellings of her name are Brig, Brighid, or Brigit.
Not unlike many of the Tuatha Dé Danan, Brigid is thought to be a Triple Goddess, similar to The Morrigan. Some believe this means she is three sister goddesses or that she is one goddess made of three different aspects. These sisters, or aspects depending on your belief, would be Brigid the Healer, Brigid the Smith, and Brigid the Poet.
By far Brigid was one of the most popular goddesses of the Celts, as she had variations across the Celtic world where her name was Brigantes or Briganti.
The Welsh know her as Ffraid, in Scotland her name is Brìghde/Brìde.

Notes
Though the Dagda has been established as Brigid’s father, it’s not certain who her mother is. Some say Danu, others say The Morrigan, though this is less likely. I personally have yet to find anywhere that names a mother with any evidence.
Brigid is considered a Mother Goddess.
Brigid has been conflated with the Catholic St. Brigid, who was the daughter of a converted Druid. It is believed by some that St. Brigid of the Catholic church was inspired by the Goddess. The two share many features and even a holiday.
St. Brigid’s day is February 1st and lands on the same day as the Irish-Pagan holiday Imbolc, leading some folks to believe that the saint is a Christianized version of the ancient goddess. However, no study has found there to be any historical link between them.
Brigid was likened to the Roman Minerva, the Greek Athena, as well as the Proto-Indo-European goddess of the dawn.
Brigid has also been known to go by Dana or Danu, though they are also separate deities.
In mythology, Brigid invented Keening, which is a mix of weeping and singing while mourning the death of her son.
Brigid is heavily linked to Irish Holy wells.
Brigid is also known for prophecy as she was worshipped by seers.
She is associated with fire due to her associations with the hearth and smiths
Ultimately there is very little historical information about Brigit, surprising considering she is so popular now and was popular even in the past.

Could you talk about some of those love languages? I'm really interested in what you've experienced!
I may have to go into it more later, but yeah different dieties express their affection in different ways!
I'm not super brushed up on the love languages, but Loki's language towards me is gift-giving and acts of service, Bres's is definitely quality time, and Brigid's is words of affirmation and (astrally) physical touch.

ive been agnostic and not interested in any diety work on my path until now when i was thinking i need to do a protection spell for a stray cat i love thats a very long distance away. hes still living in a neighborhood that i moved away from months ago and i want to make sure he stays fed and safe. i felt i needed assistance since hes so far away and i dont have any of his fur right now and brigid popped into my mind when i didnt even know she helps with protection AND domesticated animals until i looked it up just now?? i think i knew she was protective buy i didnt know she helped with animals but anyway i looked at some imagery of her too and feel such warmth and love that i havent felt looking at other pagan dieties before. do you think its a sign? im not sure where to start and i dont have any experience with her but i think feel really good about this

hearth fires are often re-lit, especially using the Yule greenery, as keeping this too long invites the fae folk to stay in the house beyond their welcome.
WHO TO HONOUR
Imbolc celebrations took place in honour of the goddess Brigid! This goddess was considered one of the most powerful Celtic gods.
ABOUT BRIGID
Tumblr media
REPRESENTS:
spring
fertility
fire
creativity
poetry
healing
crafting
and so much more!
She is the daughter of Dagda, one of the oldest Celtic gods In some representations.
Brigid in some stories has two sisters both also named Brigid, it’s thought among many that this is meant to represent the goddess in different forms or points in life (personally I love this aspect of them because not many gods actually do age thought the stories and legends. They’re are a few others but I just think it’s cool little thing to note)
it was often found that Brigid’s crosses were made from wheat stalks at this time of year and exchanged and hung in the home to protect from fire damage.
Tumblr media
While many people still honour Brigid today, if working with dietys isn’t your thing, many more modern celebrations can include the following:
⭐️🌸⭐️🌸⭐️🌸⭐️🌸⭐️🌸⭐️🌸
SOME FUN WAYS
TO CELEBRATE
🌸⭐️🌸⭐️🌸⭐️🌸⭐️🌸⭐️🌸⭐️
having a fire this could be as nice as having a bonfire or as simple as leaving a tea light in a bowl outside for them!
for Brigid, you could write intentions on paper and throw them into the fire,
a simple meditation with a candle would be amazing for this day!
You could even make making Brigid a crosses out of pipe cleaners or paper if you have little ones you want to include in the festivities.
Maybe burn some candles in the imbolc colours which are white, pink, red, yellow, green, brown.
if you wanted to indulge in some classic imbolc type food typically it would be dairy products, spicy food or lamb! And Something that would’ve been stored over the winter, smoked meats, dried fruit and nuts!
Often times Candles are placed in windows to welcome the spring and spring cleaning and household purification rituals are common.
this is really just a quick breakdown of this witchy holiday and a few suggestions! Your celebration doesn’t have to be grand or spectacular either I’ve had imbolc where all I’ve done was change the altar cloth to a flowered one! I’ve also had imbolc a filled with ritual and magic! It’s all up to you how to celebrate the day, it’s about welcoming in the spring energy! Releasing that which serves you no more! Even spring cleaning can be associated with imbolc!

What's it like not working solely with the dieties you follow? (if I'm incorrect, I apologize in my assumption) I can give further context to my question in a dm
I love this question! Sorry it took me so long to get to it. It's been a really interesting process so far.
I worship Hades, Aphrodite, and Dionysus but also work with Brigid and Isis. I interact with the Greek deities the most, they've become an integral part of my practice and my life. They've helped me personally, in spellwork, with others, and in so many different ways.
With Brigid and Isis, it's different. They're not always around. I still give them offerings and communicate with them but it's less frequent or only in certain aspects of my life. For example, Brigid usually helps with my goals and other things I want to achieve. She'll give me signs and I know I have to work with her on something. Isis is similar in that way, she helps me in all my struggles and pushes me to be the best, healthiest and happiest version of myself. She also helps me with spellwork.
There is definitely a separation between the Greek deities and the others, just because it seems like that's what they want from me. For example, my altar has all of their things on it, but one side is for those I worship and the other is for Brigid and Isis.
It's been a really good learning experience so far and I've loved every step of it, even the difficult ones. Thank you for the question!

I greatly appreciate it. Also, any advice on finding the right diety(ies) to work with for what i need help healing?(stuck on heart chakra if you have any suggestions). Thank you in advance!
As far as my knowledge goes, black magick is cursing and red magick is sex magick and/or blood magick.
For your emotional healing, I would recommend any of the following gods:
Lucifer, Lilith, Raum, Asmodeus, Abigor, Aetherea, Aphrodite, Apollo, Inanna, Isis, Hathor, Taweret, Freyja, Danu, Brigid, Coatlicue, Xochiquetzal, Parvati, Lalita, and Anna’er’tann’rath.
Additionally, I also have some proper sources that teach you how to manage your chakras:

My partner is doing his first bit of deity work and I didn’t even realize how much he was interested in it until tonight :,)
He’s given my patrons offerings before but I’m glad he’s decided to seek out his own experiences! I think it’ll be good for him.
That being said, anyone have any experiences with Brigid?

Brigid is the celtic goddess of healing, poetry and smithcraft. She was known as a triple diety and her attributes are light, inspiration, and skills associated with fire. Although she might not be identified with the physical Sun, she is certainly the benefactress of inner healing and vital energy. In Greek mythology she was know as Athena, and in Roman she was known as Minerva. Bridgid is one of 56 characters from Warriors, Witches & Women, written by @theekatehodges and published by @quarto.knows 🌞 (at Quarto Publishing) https://www.instagram.com/p/CIC_I4gB1tL/?igshid=1tsqnq5q2zv67

Mārīcī, Lady of the Brillant light, the dawn goddess is a Buddhist deity that clears away darkness and has many homologous dieties in polytheistic religious traditions.
Occidental examples of the dawn goddess include the reconstructed Indo-European dawn goddess Hausos and her reflections in historical daughter traditions:
Greek Eos, Egyptian Tefnut, Etruscan Thesan, Germanic Ēostre, Hindu Ushas, Roman Aurora, Slavic Zorya, Irish Brigid, Lithuanian Aušra or Aušrinė, Latvian Austra. In Japan, the non-Indo-European dawn goddess Ame-no-Uzume-no-Mikoto (Uzume) is a Shinto spirit with a temperament very similar to Ushas and Eos.
Shakyamuni Buddha himself, according to Mahayana literature, revealed her mantra at Sravasti ( OM MARICHI MAM SVAHA) and there Buddha stated his reliance on this unconquerable goddess.
Marici underwent several dramatic changes in the course of her iconographic evolution. The simplest form and most likely the original form is the two-armed epiphany, Asokakanta. She holds an Asoka branch, flower or tree in her left hand and extends her right hand in a gesture of divine blessing with the palm outward. She sits with legs crossed and right foot extended. Ready to spring to action for our benefit from her lotus seat that rests on a golden boar. The Asoka branch remains her main emblem throughout her later manifestations.
The Asoka, which blossoms with magnificent clusters coral-red flowers has long been attributed with magical and healing properties of female fertility and amorous desire. In turn the Asoka feels a longing or pregnant craving (dohada) for the touch of a female foot and will not unfurle it flowers without this touch.
This is the tree under which Mahadevi gave birth to Shyakamuni and in early Buddhist stupa reliefs, asoka trees are associated with an indwelling goddess (yaksini), or tree spirit. Perhaps the most definitive example are railings of Sanghol where all the yaksinis are shown beneath a canopy of flowering Asoka boughs.
The next stage in Marici's evolution was her incarnation as the warrior goddess of dawn where she takes on a golden hue and multi armed forms. In these she holds a bow and arrow, noose, goad, vajra, needle and thread, and an Asoka branch. The six-armed form was largely supplanted by the eight-armed form with different combinations and configuration of implements that are recorded in the Shadhanamala and the eight-armed form and is well represented in the Tibetan Tanjur.
Marici is ultimately the radiance of the enlightened mind. A mind that is in essence the dawning of spiritual light in the world.
Her porcine mount is a wild boar (varaha) with tusks and large snout. An animal that donates the ferocious defense of nascent enlightenment.

Misconceptions about Wicca
Wicca is a religion. Witchcraft is a practice.
Wicca is a neo pagan witchcraft religion. Neo as in modern. It’s not following any strict rules or trying to keep a pre christian practice alive. But it’s something new based off those old spiritual ways. Any nature based and or polytheistic religion is considered pagan. -So basically everything except christianity, judaism and islam (aka Abrahamic religions). Shamanism, Druidism Helenism, and Heathenry are just some examples of what is considered Pagan. Being a Wiccan technically makes you a witch. But being a witch doesn’t make you wiccan. A witch is someone who practices witchcraft. A Wiccan is one who puts together religion and the practice of magick (so basically a Pagan Witch). That being said, you could also be pagan and not be a witch (practice the craft) of course. It is a very diverse sub section of paganism in which people are free to choose who/what dieties they work with, and how they see them. There’s options consisting of the Greek, Celtic, Norse, and Egyptian gods and more. The traditional deity approach to wicca is the worship of one Goddess and one God, as when it was established by Gerald Gardner throughout the 40s and 50s. The only strong beliefs they all tend to follow are “if it harms none, do what you will” and the rule of three/karma. There is no bible.
Wiccans aren’t Satanists!
“In our eyes, satan is just something that’s been created by christainity, it’s just like a christian entity. Wicca follows the belief of the earth around us. in our minds satan is imaginary. And that also does not mean that everything goes; we have a lot of morals in only putting positivity out into the earth -this is where karma comes from.
The reason i think this has been kinda confused and put into ignorance and uneducation is because of the way some of our deities look. Lile some of our dieties like the well known ones like the Pan God are obviously perceived with horns. Fun fact: christians back in the day decided to make and perceive their concept of evil so similar to pagan looking deities, just to the fact to make people convert to christianity. And this is true they literally took what our dieties looked like with the horns and things like taht which y’know things with horns anyway arent.... why, why would they be evil anyway? They took that and made it their perception of evil to make people convert into christianity. That’s the only reason why people see it that way.
Much like the pagan sabbats were taken and made into christian holidays thats where your holidays come from. paganism.
Of course satanists do exist of course there are satanists that may practice witchcraft but witchcraft itself, wicca and paganism has nothing to do with satan.”
“fun fact: originally the pentagram with the point facing upwards represented facing to the sky -so female energies and the divine and the goddess etc . and the inverted pentagram, with the point face down again never meant the devil to begin with. the inverted pentagram actually used to just be pointing to the ground to represent more masculine energies like earth and masculine dieties and things like that. and obviously the inverted pentagram in satanism means something completely different they use it for completely different reasons and that’s fine. you do you. whatever. but to us what the pentagram means to us it’s just not the same for wiccans.”
-Harmony Nice via Top 5 Biggest misconceptions about Wicca
Wiccan rites and rituals do not involve the harming of animals.
Wicca is a nature based religion. Lots of Wiccans are Pacifists, Vegans, Vegetarians etc. because they believe in causing as little harm to the earth as possible. They do not hold themselves above nature, but respect and gratify, and thank it through witchcraft.
“Most branches of Wicca—called traditions—adhere to some basic tenets, though. There’s a reverence for nature, the belief that humans are meant to commune with and draw strength from the natural world. There’s a polytheistic worldview, worship for an all-powerful god and goddess. Some traditions may worship individual deities—the goddess Brigid and the god Cernunnos in the Celtic tradition, for example—while others may worship the all-encompassing god and goddess.”
-Scott Cunningham via Wicca: A Guide For The Solitary Practitioner
Wicca is not a female religion
Although it may be female dominated, Wicca is open to everyone no matter your gender, backround, race, orientations or anything like that. Many are drawn to Wicca for its reverence for the more feminine parts of nature, represented as the Goddess. But no, it’s not only for women.

Call me Mei. I'm 24 years old and the mother of an incredible 3 year old. I dabble into different kinds of art. My favorites are painting, jewelry, and poetry. I have a professional diagnosis for depression and anxiety but who doesn't have that? I've started exercising to improve my mental and physical health and fuck, I'm sore. I have a cat called Freyja who is super sweet and docile. My beliefs are pretty simple: I'm wiccan. I have no specific diety other than Nyx and/or Brigid. I don't believe that they are a person but the entirety of all that exists in this galaxy, the energy that flows and is recycled. My view on "witchcraft" and practicing is just learning how to be a better vessel for energy and how to manifest what I need from it. There is history of "witchcraft" down my family line but I'm the only one who is involved. I love my herbs and teas. I don't think of myself as a follower since I've been invested in this lifestyle since I was around 5 years old. This is just the kind of lifestyle i was drawn to. I'm still learning everyday. Keep any hate to yourself. I'm not harming anyone so don't harm me. Xoxo
