So the hardcover copy of Heart of Glass @trippednfell made me came in an envelope and a ziploc bag for protection (and easy access in case customs would have needed to open it), but since I want nothing to happen to that cover...I crocheted a book sleeve for it.
First time trying the tulip stitch because that was the closest to gentians I could get. I need some more practice with this, and the sleeve needs blocking, but for now I am really pleased with it.
Also when it comes to bookmarks, I might not be able to craft a real stained glass gentian - but I sure as hell can crochet one!
Tumblr media
The book came with a bookmark with my name on it, but that one lives in my journal.
If you haven't seen the book yet, yoz can find it here in this post.
And if you wanna read Heart of Glass, a Wangxian fanfic set in a steampunk-vibish (no actual steampunk) universe in which stained glass has magical properties? You can read it here.

crochet book sleeve
Tumblr media
I very recently made this crochet book sleeve, and I was asked to share the pattern I used. I did not follow any patter found online, I crafted one myself and here's how I did it. I am no expert in crochet, and I improvised but it turned out pretty nice. I personally used some left over yarn from other projects, but you can use any that you like. I know that books have very different sizes depending on the coutry they are printed it, the English/ USA editions I have are totally differnt from the majority of my books in Italian, so I'd advise to take your own mesurements depending on the average book size in your country. I personally decided to mesure up an hardcover book in order to have a slightly bigger book sleeve. The number of chains you create to start of course depends on the size of the yarn you pick, I advise to start with a ruler nearby so that you can check the mesurements depending on your own plan. The book I picked as reference for the mesures was approximately 23x16x3.5 cm. I therefore created a plan using slightly bigger measures: 25x18x5 cm.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
My original plan and a drawing to hopefully make things a but clearer for you.
I was lazy so I decided to create the main structure with just three panels: one for the front, one with the same measures for the back, and a long strip to make both sides and the bottom. It was certainly quicker, but I do not recommend doing as I did. I would recommend dividing this in three separate pieces two for the sides and one for the bottom. Here's why: by doing as I did the bottom is not perfectly square, and it can be a little harder to sew together with the front and back. If you create three separate pieces it might take a bit more time, but believe me it will be much better. Lastly I created a smaller panel for the front pocket, that had the same lenght measure as the front, but was about half of its height. I recommend doing all the different pieces first and only after sew them together. I personally decided to use a tunisian stitch for the all the panels except for the pocket which I made with an alpine stitch. I think the contrasting stitch looks nice, but honestly do whatever you like best. After having all your panels firstly sew the pocket to the front panel, and just after that start attaching the sides and bottom. Remember to saw with the right sides facing each other, so that the stitches won't show in the end result (except for the front pocket, that you'll have to sew on top of the front panel in the way it will be at the end). When you are done attaching all the panels you can add a button and a string to close it on top and you are done.
I hope this was clear, I don't know all the technical terms in English, so I'm sorry about that. If I wasn't too clear just let me know. And if you end up doing this let me know!!

🦇 This Is How You Lose the Time War Book Review
❓ #QOTD If you could travel to any time or place, where would you go? ❓ 🦇 Among the ashes of a dying world, an agent of the Commandant finds a letter. It reads: Burn before reading. Thus begins an unlikely correspondence between two rival agents hellbent on securing the best possible future for their warring factions. Red belongs to the Agency, a post-singularity technotopia. Blue belongs to Garden, a single vast consciousness embedded in all organic matter. They have nothing in common, save that they're both the best, and they're alone.
🦇 What began as a taunt, a battlefield boast, grows into something more. Something epic. Something romantic. Something that could change the past and the future. Except the discovery of their bond would mean death for each of them. There's still a war going on, after all. And someone has to win that war.
💜 This novella burrowed soft seedlings deep within my bloodstream, sprouted saplings that tangled my mind in a war waged on time, and left me blossoming, tears brimming in my eyes. Red and Blue's slow burn, sapphic romance is compelling, imaginative, dizzying, and disastrous; a beautiful collaboration I hope will breed many more. Amal El-Mohtar and Max Gladstone ensnare you from the first page; their prose takes root DEEP and stays. I'll be nursing this book hangover for a while yet. Once Red and Blue are mentally (and in some ways, physically) intertwined, they bloom purple, their dueling prose uniting into a timeless, ethereal poetry. No real world could contain this story, but the pages of this book did well to contain their love. It's difficult to say more without spoiling the story's potency. No review I could write, even given a thousand threads or lives, would do it justice.
💙 I've made a mess of highlighting this one, each line lending to the next. However, I will say there are some references that left me unable to fully appreciate a well-written line (my own problem, really). I would have appreciated more information about the time war, the Agency, and the Garden, but it's not really necessary when the story's true focus is the blossoming rivals-to-lovers slow burn romance between our protagonists.
🦇 Recommended for fans of Killing Eve (imagine them as time-traveling pen pals and you have Red and Blue's story).

💬 Quotes ❝ There’s a kind of time travel in letters, isn’t there? ❞ ❝ I want to be a body for you. I want to chase you, find you, I want to be eluded and teased and adored; I want to be defeated and victorious—I want you to cut me, sharpen me. I want to drink tea beside you in ten years or a thousand. ❞ ❝ Listen to me—I am your echo. I would rather break the world than lose you. ❞ ❝ I have built a you within me, or you have. I wonder what of me there is in you. ❞ ❝ I love you. If you’ve come this far, that’s all I can say. I love you and Iove you and I love you, on battlefields, in shadows, in fading ink, on cold ice splashed with the blood of seals. In the rings of trees. In the wreckage of a planet crumbling to space. In bubbling water. In bee stings and dragonfly wings, in stars. In the depths of lonely woods where I wandered in my youth, staring up—and even then you watched me. You slid back through my life, and I have known you since before I knew you. ❞ ❝ Dearest, deepest Blue— At the end as at the start, and through all the in-betweens, I love you. ❞ ❝ “Some things matter more than winning.” ❞

Book pouches
I've been meaning to make a post about my book pouches for a while. I saw someone selling them at a comic con a while ago but they were quite expensive and I thought "surely I can make something like that at home way cheaper?" These are the results.
Tumblr media
If you're the sort of person who often has a book in their bag, then you'll know there's usually a chance that the book will be damaged (scratched cover, crumpled or torn pages etc.) These are to stop that happening.
There are a lot of tutorials for how to make them on YouTube, but all you need are a nice patterned fabric for the outer layer, some quilt batting to pad the pouch (not too thick, just enough to protect the book) and a satin type fabric for lining. As fabrics and batting can be expensive I just went to a charity shop and bought a large, thin quilt for £3 which I was able to use for both the padding and the satin lining.
Get a book and draw a large rectangle around it, giving yourself enough space for seam allowance and the thickness of the book. You won't be able to make one that will fit all books but give yourself a bit of room and it should fit most. Also, this gives you an excuse to make several in different sizes!
Cut two pieces each of your lining, quilting and outer patterned fabric. Sandwich everything so the patterned fabric is in the middle, good side to good side, quilting outside of that, and satin liner last. Sew all around three sides, leaving the top open.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
At the top edge fold down all three layers and sew around to hem the edge.
This next step wasn't part of many tutorials I found, but I did it because I didn't want the raw edges poking out and fraying. I made some home-made "bias tape" by cutting large pieces of my liner fabric, folding in all edges and ironing them down, then hand sewing them everywhere there was a raw edge. I used invisible stitching and made sure I only sewed them to the lining, I didn't go through all layers. This might not be very clear but hopefully this picture of the inside once I've finished will help. I used different colours of liner fabric here because I was running out. That doesn't really matter as it won't be seen.
Tumblr media
Turn right side out and you have a book pouch!
I could have made a flap to fasten them closed, but I didn't really feel the need for that. However one further step I did take was to decorate the front. There are many ways you could do this, but I decided to take some quotes to do with books and reading and use an online text generator (cooltext.com was the one I used, but there are loads of these) to give them interesting fonts and colours that match the fabric, then use iron on printer transfer paper to make them into patches.

Hello! Your crochet booksleeves are gorgeous omg!! I’ve just begun to crochet; would you recommend making booksleeves to a beginner? Also, if yes, where do you get good patterns? Thank you!!
Hi! thank you so so much love! 💓
• I think crochet booksleeves could be appropriate for a beginner, it just depends of the pattern. I personnaly started crocheting in october 2022, i wanted a granny square blanket and didn't want to spend 200 euros on one ; and i knew deep down that as someone who is very manual i would be able to learn how to make one.
youtube videos : youtube is amazing when it comes to video tutorials. having a visual of what's happening in the crochet pattern can be really helpful if you are a beginner. this is what i personnaly started with. as i said, i had this idea of a granny square blanket so i bought the yarn, found a youtube tutorials and just followed the video. it was confusing at first and i didn't understand that was happening. i didn't even try to learn the crochet term to be honest... i simply followed my muscle memory and i made granny squares after granny squares (that obviously helped me to work of the tension in my hands, so my squares became better and better). anyways, youtube tutorials are great and if you want to make your first crochet book sleeve, and 6 simple granny squares that you assemble together can be a great way to start.
pinterest : that social media is so amazing when it comes to patterns (if you feel confortable with written patterns). if you check my previous crochet post you'll see that all of my crochet booksleeves all look different, but in reality most of them are very similar, what makes a huge difference are the colours i am using. when i started getting into much harder patterns, i found a free website through pinterest with a dozen patterns of squares which changed my life. search for the Bláithín Blanket Stash from Annie Design Crochet ; most of the square you see are from her, they just look different because i play with colours as much as possible to make them look different and original.
• another great way to create crochet booksleeves (that i randomly came up with when i was taking a shower on a normal friday night) :
Tumblr media Tumblr media
this design is simply 8 rectangles (I made them with half double crochet - US terms) that I assembled to together, and decorated with some appliques (same as the granny squares, appliques are really easy to find. for example type : butterfly applique crochet pattern and you’ll find dozens of them).
I really really hope this post helps you with you crochet journey, if you guys have any questions (even if you really want to find a free pattern, i’m like a pro at finding them now) do no hesitate to ask me and I will be glad to help!! 💓

Little preview for a personal project I’m currently working on: making book sleeves for the eng mxtx novels~ sometimes I just want a more minimal look on my books, so here is my solution
Patrons on patreon get sneak peek updates with clearer images of the full sleeves as I work on them, so if you’re interested, please check it out!
I’m still trying to see how this can be distributed to those who would also like these for their own novels. Hope to later work on other novels too!

Crochet question
I want to make a book sleeve
What’s better. A classic book sleeve (looking like a bag) that you can close with a button. Like this:

Or using a granny square?
