Rating the photoshop for bird products I found on Amazon

It's a classic story: You want to sell a product for bird owners on Amazon. Your potential customers may just need some reference for how big your product is, or may need to be shown how a bird might use such an exotic item as a "perch". But you don't want to wrangle one or more birds for the sake of a product image. So you turn to photoshop.

Let's take a moment to rank some of these works of art:

Delightful. The masking is a bit off around the crest, but I don't think it needs to be fixed. 9/10, you got the point across.

A rare example of a bird that is not lost in a white void. Based on the product description, this perch should actually be several inches smaller than a cockatiel, but as we'll see we can't get too picky about scale. 6/10, perspective could use some work.

Interesting color of macaw, FASCINATING take on the relative sizes of macaws and lovebirds. 4/10, the lovebird seems to be enjoying themself but I think you're trying to pretend a macaw wouldn't toss this thing around like an overpriced foot toy.

Why doesn't the cockatiel get to play? 4/10, this makes me sad.

That bird might have actually been standing on that skateboard when they were sucked into the white void! Amazing! 13/10, cockatiel finally gets to play!

This toy's largest dimension is 18.5 inches. Blue-and-gold macaws are around 30–34 inches. 2/10, please the lies have to stop.

This is just a collage. It no longer feels like they're trying to tell me how big these things are; I might not know how big your wicker heart with streamers is, but I know a lorikeet is smaller than a macaw. Incredulity has stretched far enough to snap. 3/10, still pretty birds.

2/10, hey wait I know that macaw--

The birds and toys hang in a void. There is no suggestion that these birds were ever near these toys, but the blue parakeet has been artfully depicted as perching on one of them. I do not feel deceived, I feel informed. 10/10.

No. No. What have you done?? Did the mirror eat his face? Why did you let the mirror eat his face? Please, destroy the mirror before it comes for us all. 1/10, I swear I've seen that bird somewhere else.

Hello! With the hawk feather au, do you think Emily will end up falling? Cause at this point I feel like all it would take is a particularly bad outburst or two from Sera for Emily to say screw it and hurl herself out of heaven. At least that way she won’t have to be confronted with the horrors of it all.

the common bond between the inner circle members is that the moment they learn the truth about salem and her immortality, their flaws take the center stage.

it happened with lionheart. it happened with qrow. and it happened with ironwood.

ozpin told his version of the truth to team strq and afterwards, raven went looking for more because she needed to know what else there was, and with each discovery, the more terrifying the world became.

raven was raised by bandits who send her to beacon to learn how to kill huntsmen. likely due to her upbringing, her survival instinct is strong, and she'll do anything, things others won't, to do so.

let's say the "we" raven talks about re: finding the spring maiden is the inner circle, and use that to paint a picture. say, that all these three things happened around the same time, let's say within a year:

raven learns the truth about salem after looking for information on her own

raven trains the spring maiden ["she... ran. abandoned her training, everyone."] ["and later, one of them chose to abandon her duties in favor of her own self-interest."] ["no matter how much training i put her through, she never learned!"]

yang is born

maybe raven didn't leave immediately after learning the truth. maybe it took a little bit longer, sticking around for one reason or another, be it yang or training the spring maiden or both, but the thought that salem is immortal being with powerful magic won't leave her mind.

and here she is, training the spring maiden who, in her mind, wasn't cut out for this world. who was weak and, as per the bandit tribe that raised her, the weak die, the strong live. those were the rules they lived by.

the world is a terrifying place; salem is terrifying, and at this point raven sees no way following ozpin doesn't end in early trip to the grave. unless... well

salem might be powerful, but the maidens are pretty powerful too. and there, in front of her, is a spring maiden who just won't learn, who's basically useless in terms of using the powers she has.

["you turned yourself into a monster, just for power." "look who's talking."]

raven wants to survive. she'll do anything to survive, and old habits die hard; she was raised by bandits—the weak die, the strong live; and raven can't be weak—, sent to beacon to learn how to kill huntsmen.

and just like with the other members of the inner circle once they learn about salem's immortality, raven's flaws come forth like a wrecking ball, and she backslides into the person she perhaps once when she first arrived at beacon.

and it horrifies her, because she had changed, and now all those years have gone to waste. she has a family, a baby, and now she feels like she can't do that anymore, can't have that life anymore, too afraid of what she might do if she stays... and so, she leaves.

with how raven has been described as complicated and troubled, i seriously doubt her reasons behind leaving were simple, and i think something akin to above fits the bill pretty well.

Okay, I've had a couple people encourage me to do mundane bird lore, and I still don't have time for a proper info dump on bird minutia (that I'd have to all double-check, cause the intersection of a special interest with a shitty memory is a whole clusterfuck) but I can give random tidbits!

-cc!Phil sometimes whacks his mouse on his desk a few times when he's laughing particularly hard. I propose that q!Phil is making that sound with his throat; loud clicks are well within the range of sounds that crows can make. And crows are known to sometimes pick up some weird "laughs".

-Several species of birds use an evolutionary strategy known as "brood parasitism", in which they lay their eggs in another bird's nest to trick the other bird into raising their young. Because of this, many of the targeted species have developed sophisticated strategies for identifying their real offspring. I think those instincts are part of how Philza identified the code doppelgangers so quickly.

-Tallulah is one of the only eggs who regularly uses noise to get attention. That's a hella bird-like behavior to learn from Phil!

-Phil's wings spent a LONG time in his backpack. Every thing he owns is absolutely covered in feathers. The feather buildup in there isn't going to just go away now that he's keeping his wings out. Every time someone asks for supplies, he hands them stuff with a bunch of feathers stuck to it.

-Crow down feathers aren't necessarily black, they can be a light greyish/white. Which isn't all that far off from blond... what if Phil doesn't have "hair" and it's all just feathers.
