SW October Prompts Day 6: Senator

R3TT’s mechanical growls alert Lucky to the presence at her door before there's a reluctant knock. R3TT lets out a short bark, quieting at Lucky’s hush. The GV/3 droid makes a whirl that sounds something akin to a huff, as it circles and lays down. 

Shaking her head, Lucky looks back to datapad, her eyes picking up where she has left off with her newly drafted bill. It only needed just a few more final touches before today’s meeting in the evening. R3TT growls again when another knock comes, this time, more persistent. “Yes?” Lucky calls, typing the necessary changes to the bill. 

“Senator Day,” Comes the voice of one of the senate guards. “The meeting…”

Lucky takes a quick glance at her clock, worrying for a moment she had let the time slip away from her. Relief fills her when she sees she still has two solid hours to go. “Isn’t for a while,” Lucky says, setting the datapad down, and rolling her shoulders. How long has she been working on this exactly? She looks at the several empty cups of caf and tea that are littered across her desk, and then at the blanket splayed over the couch in her office. 

That’s right, since yesterday, with three hours of sleep to balance it all.

“No, Senator,” The guard says impatiently. “It’s been moved up,”

Lucky’s fingers freeze mid-typing. Her green eyes shoot to the door. “I…the- the meeting…” she gets out, fumbling over her words. A stark contrast to her verbal fluidity in the Senate Rotunda. “It’s what?” She finally gets out, standing to her feet quickly.

“The meeting has been moved up, it’s in 15 minutes. Anyone who is tardy will have to present their bills next week”

Lucky is sure her blue skin has gone red. “What?” She gets out again, this time anger lining her voice rather than shock. “This is clearly harassment,” She snaps to herself, snatching up her items. None of her advisors were here yet. All believed the meeting would be later. If she didn’t present her bill, she wouldn’t get the chance till next week. She couldn’t afford that. Someone was pulling strings in the Senate. Again.

“Should I escort you?” The guard calls. Lucky doesn’t answer and makes a desperate search for her headpiece. She’s thankful she took a trip to the refresher and showered just hours before and got dressed. Yes, it always helped to be prepared. Especially with snakes in the Senate.

The charms of her headpiece chime as she dashes for the door, her dress swirling behind her. The guard looks at her as the door slides open, and the Pantoran senator all but storms out.

“I’ll be fine.” Lucky finally responds, shuffling her items around in her arms, making a mental inventory of everything. “Where are the Coruscant Guards?” She asks, heading down the corridor, glancing around, noticing the absence of the red armored troopers.

The senate guard snorts, following her at a distance. “Patrolling,” He says “don’t worry Senator Day, your Corrie clone will be happy to escort you back later,” 

Lucky ignores him, the mocking tone in his voice agitating her nerves more than they were already. She pushes her feet to walk faster toward the designated entrance to her repulsorpod. Her eyes drift back to the datapad in her hands, and for a brief moment, the confidence she had in her work abate. Lucky quickly pushes the doubt away with a shake of her head. Well…maybe she could make a slight change to article 3, section 5…

A startled gasp leaves Lucky as rounds the corner and nearly meets head-on with Senator Patience. Lucky fumbles in catching the paper notes she had tucked in her arm. Patience catches the falling items, and Lucky sighs. “Oh, Senator Patience, thank you.” She says, taking the papers back. “I’m guessing you got the news of our early meeting late as well?” She asks, smoothing out her dress.

Patience makes an unimpressed sound. “Corruption in the senate rears its ugly head once more,” She states with a roll of her eyes. “Obviously a last-ditch attempt on the Trade Federation’s part to keep this war waging for as long as it can,” She points out, pulling her own datapad into her hands.

 Despite her displeasure with how the day was turning, Lucky couldn’t help but smile at Patience’s words. She had always admired the Europa senator. Her speeches were always so moving and inspiring, always taking into consideration not just the Republic, but its people.

“Patience!” 

The young women turn to see Patience's advisor Betty making a brisk beeline for them, pointing to a chronometer on her wrist. “We only have five more minutes,” She warns quickly. “Senator Day,” She greets politely, before taking Patience by the arm and whisking her off down the hall. Her blonde head whips back as she calls back. “Love the dress. Knock them out, Lucky!”

Lucky takes a deep breath, entering through the doors to her repulsorpod. Oh, she intended to.

If at all possible, Lucky’s mood has gone from bad to worse. Her legs ached from the countless hours of standing and pacing, and her throat was raw from her speech, and though she was met with booming agreement from her fellow senators, her bill was ultimately placed on the back burner. 

The chancellor had made the suggestion to strengthen it and present it in the next senate meeting. She knew she could have made that change to article 3, section 5…

A ping from her datapad catches her attention. A chat from Patience waits for her on the screen

Patience: I thought you were wonderful. Your bill should have passed. They don’t see this war for what it is, only as a means to make money.

A rueful smile comes to Lucky as she types a hasty reply. 

Lucky: Thank you. But if the chancellor wants a stronger bill. A stronger bill he’ll get. Wait till he and the senate see my new one. Something in regard to sentience and rights for some men who are a big part of this war.

Patience: Lucky Day, I must warn you, that will certainly upset some folks here. It may cause quite a scandal, too. Mind if I draft that up with you?

Lucky bites her lip and holds back a laugh, not even paying mind to the Chancellor’s closing speech.

Betty beams at them both, clapping her hands in applause. “You both were absolutely wonderful out there today.” She compliments Patience and Lucky as they wander back out to the hallways. “We should go out to dinner and celebrate,” She offers, walking between them. 

“Celebrate our bills being practically rejected?” Patience asks, her brows rising in humor. Betty scoffs, waving a hand.

“Obviously, they scared someone enough they had to pull this stunt and see to it the voting was swayed.” Betty concurs with verity. Lucky and Patience share a look and smile. That was certainly one way of looking at it.

“I’ll have to pass, I have some more work to wrap up.” Patience declines with a shake of her head, stopping before her office. “Betty, why don’t you head home for Europa? I know it’s been a week that you’ve been here to help me to prepare.” 

Lucky wishes she could go home to Pantora, for a moment she visualizes her family’s ranch and the wide marshlands. She sighs and nods. “I have work to do as well,” She says. Betty’s shoulders drop slightly but she nods.

“Next time, then we’ll actually celebrate because the bills will pass,” Betty says with a smile. The three give their farewells and hugs before parting ways.

The Senate can be so serene after dark, where the calamity of the day has ended and the countless have gone home. But sometimes, the shadows could play tricks. Lucky barely makes it down the hallway before leaning against the wall and tugging off her heels. A wisp in the shadows makes her squeak and freeze. Her wide eyes follow the moving silhouette as he heads toward Patience’s office. Leaning back, she spies the tall and strong form of a young man, his features become more apparent as the door to the office swishes open. It’s hard to mistake his clothing and robes for a Jedi’s. There are a few hushed words before he slips into Patience’s office. Lucky stands there wide-eyed, her hand flying to her mouth. Well, then. This was something entirely different for another day. Should Patience ever wish to speak about it.

When Lucky finally makes it to her office, R3TT is there to greet her with a happy mechanical bark. Lucky looks around the room, the flashing lights of Courscant's night life reflecting in. She wanders over to her desk, linking up her datapad to the computer. 

“Well, R3TT…” She sighs. R3TT lifts its head to her questioningly.  “It’s back to work,” She says, lacing her fingers, and cracking her knuckles. 

Another long night.

Profiles in Villainy

Cruella de Vil

The deplorably devious Cruella de Vil is an eccentric, fashion-obsessed heiress who has harbored a twisted hatred of dalmatians for much of her life.  Although she finds the dogs themselves to be odious, de Vil sees their coats and the pattern of their fur to be absolutely divine; so much so that they became the muse that inspired her fashion designs.  

DeVil’s bent obsession with dalmatians led her to devise a lavish coat made up of the dogs’ fur.  Older dalmatians tended to have more coarse fur, however, and DeVil altered her design so that the coat would be made up the skins of dalmatian puppies... Horrible!  All and all it would require the pelts of one hundred and one dalmatian puppies to compose this unspeakably inhumane coat.    

Aided by her incompetent henchmen, Jasper and Horace, DeVil abducted the fifteen puppies bore by the kindly dalmatians, Perdita and Pongo.  She then purchased the eighty-six additional puppies by legitimate means.  The wicked DeVil would have succeeded in killing these 101 innocent pups had she not been foiled by Anita and Roger Radcliffe.

The Radcliffes ended up taking in all one hundred and one of these dogs and are able to care for them with the royalties from a catchy song Roger had composed about the wickedness of Cruella de Vil.  Her reputation irreversibly tarnished, DeVil was forced to abandon her plans for a coat made up of dalmatian fur.  

Actress Betty Lou Gerson provided the voice for DeVil in her original appearance in the 1961 Disney animated feature, One Hundred and One Dalmatians.

Champion Walk-Trot of the Pacific International

In accumulating forty-three awards in 1948 this dark chestnut three-gaited mare proved to be a ladies and amateur mount of considerable merit, but at the Pacific International late in the fall she proved that she had developed into a stake mare of considerable stature. Particularly so, for at that show the three-gaited division was stronger in quality and quantity than at any other Pacific Coast show in 1948. To make it a grand slam at Portland, Mountain Hope performed well enough before Charles W. Green to win the ladies, the amateur, the over-two stake and the championship stake.

In the early part of 1948 the mare was shown under lease by the Edward E. Radcliff stable and is now owned by Mr. and Mrs. Radcliff, and will be campaigned by them in 1949.

I feel like that poll is such a weird Rorschach blot for like ...a lot of stuff. But yeah there's simply no way Don occupies much of Sally's therapy bill with Betty on the fight card, we never saw him be anything other than solid to Bobby, and Gene never spent any time with him. Don pays the bills and provides an interesting footnote so you can pretend to have a hard edge at Radcliffe even though you grew up in Ossining. Frankly, what sixties dad provided more than that?

The place of lesbians in women’s liberation and lesbophobia (1/2)

- Reading: Tales of the Lavender Menace by Karla Jay (part 2 here) At Karla Jay’s first Redstockings gathering:

“I would have never dared to question the leaders of a group I wanted to join. But after the [Redstockings] manifesto had been handed around, a woman named Rita Mae Brown, whom I knew slightly from NYU, pushed into the center of the room from her position in the doorway to take issue with Redstockings, even though it was her first meeting. Why, she demanded, didn’t Redstockings have a position on gay women? She began to argue that lesbian relationships were as important for a feminist group to embrace as the struggle to change men.” p. 43-44

The Redstockings completely forgetting to mention lesbians or to even have an opinion on the subject ready to be shared show how much of an afterthought we lesbians have always been in women’s liberation movement. We might only represent a fraction of women, but we still are women, and as such deserve liberation as much as any other straight women. The “struggle to change men” means having to interact, having to implicate oneself in reforming them. And what of women who would have nothing to do with their oppressors? What of women who do not want to spend all their energy and strength on the thankless task of making men understand that women are humans too?

“Rita [Mae Brown] alone had the courage to speak up at that Redstockings’ meeting, long before anyone else in New York’s feminist circles dared to be openly gay. Back then, apart from early activists such as Phyllis Lyon, Del Martin, and the other pioneering women of Daughters of Bilitis (DOB), few dared to admit in a public setting that they were lesbians. It was one thing to hang out in a gay bar where anyone simply assumed similar sexual proclivities or to be open in a gay student organization. It was quite another to announce one’s lesbianism and then demand it take center stage in a room full of straight feminists who were likely to be heterosexist (the word “homophobia” came later) and who had just issued an ultimatum to keep on sleeping with men as part of a program to mend the oppressors’ ways. Rita’s sharp challenge made Redstockings’ program seem quixotic to the point of being delusional: Were these women the oppressed or the oppressors?” p. 44

It’s a shame that being a lesbian had to remain a secret, on pain of being discriminated against. As lesbians, we have a unique outlook on the world around us and on men especially. We have way less interest in maintaining the status quo or in retaining any kind of ties with men. Our outlook on relationships with men are less tinted by the rosy lenses of the patriarchal promise of a happy-ever-after made of marriage and a brood of kids. Our very reasoning when it comes to women’s liberation is often less reformist than separatist; and as such our ideas are despised. Straight women wishing for romantic love cannot accept our conclusions that women would be better off independent from our oppressors.

“The leaders of Redstockings were disturbed and threatened by Rita [Mae Brown]’s behavior. They turned the conversation back around to men as our oppressors. Still, they looked uncomfortable. After all, Rita was calling them her oppressors when they were insisting that women like them (and us) were the most oppressed on earth. One of the main tenets of the “Redstockings Manifesto” was, “We identify the agents of our oppression as men… All other forms of exploitation and oppression (racism, capitalism, imperialism, etc. ) are extensions of male supremacy: men dominate women, a few men dominate the rest.” Although the group’s members identified with “the poorest, most brutally exploited women,” they would have found it counter productive, to put it mildly, to be forced to contemplate the ways that working-class women, disabled women, or Third World women (as we called women of coloraturas) were far worse off than someone like Kathie [Sarachild], who had attended Radcliffe College. By formulating a Marxist class analysis that emphasized unity among all women and foregrounded sexism as the tool to analyze other oppressions, they had hoped to quell demands by other women that double and triple oppressions receive priority.” p. 45

This kind of behaviour is obviously one of the reasons that led Kimberlé Crenshaw to pen down her vision of intersectionality in feminism. The founders of Redstockings and writers of its manifesto were mostly white, straight, university-educated women who had never and would never be oppressed on account of their sexual orientation, skin colour, social class or disability. As a result, the conclusions they draw in their theory can only be flawed and short-sighted. Their conclusions might be insightful, but only for a specific type of women. And according to Karla Jay, they seemed reluctant to widen their scope or take into account the experience of women different from them. While Rita Mae Brown (and other lesbians that later spoke up) offered them the opportunity to reflect on what they had concluded and make their reasoning better, more pragmatic, more adapted to the various circumstances of the women around them, they stood on their positions and dismissed lesbian concerns.

“Lesbianism was a more widely discussed issue than clashs and labor. Rita Mae Brown’s vociferous arrival in Redstockings had sparked discussion in Group X [the founding Redstockings cell], although reactions were mixed. Irene Peslikis, for one, was emboldened to admit to a long-term lesbian affair that Group X knew nothing about. But other members of Group X, echoing Betty Friedan’s assertion that lesbians were a “lavender menace,” began to blame gay women for causing dissension in the group and accused them of being “antifeminists.” Katie Sarachild wrote in Feminist Revolution that “many lesbians complained that they were excluded from the movement in the beginning often by simple virtue of the fact that the women in it spent so much time talking about such boring or irrelevant or disturbing to them subjects as sex with men, getting men to do the housework, and such related problems as abortions and childcare.”

What she and many other heterosexist Redstockings overlooked was that lesbians had been raised in families with men, had usually had sexual relationships with men, had worked with men, and sometimes lived with male roommates. Several lesbians I knew had children from previous marriages. What the straight women couldn’t see was that many Redstockings talked about men all the time the way dieters obsess about food. There were times when some of us, including a few of the heterosexuals, felt it would be more productive to focus on ways in which women could interact with one another positively.

The current of homophobia made many new members, including me, reluctant to mention homosexual experiences to the group. “ p. 65-66

Some straight members of Redstockings dismissed lesbians experiences as irrelevant to women’s liberation under the assumptions that because lesbians are not attracted to men and therefore would not engage in relationships with them in an ideal world, and so were not interacting with the male oppressor. In our world, this is a completely delusional assertion. Even in separatist communes, lesbians still have to deal with the law of the land, which has so far mostly been written and enacted by men. Lesbians too have fathers and brothers; lesbians too get sick and need to go to the hospital; lesbians too go out and use the amenities offered by society; lesbians too can be harassed and attacked by men. So women’s liberation concerns us as much as it does straight women, and our experiences with men and of sexism should not be dismissed as irrelevant.

And our experiences as lesbians tell us that straight women concerned with women’s liberation are most likely wasting their energy when they focus on trying to change men. Yes, these kind of discussions should take place, especially between women who do not want to renounce relationships with men; but lesbians are right to wonder why such subjects often take center place in women’s liberation movement.
