Have you ever lost someone and then you just feel like you see that someone everywhere? Every place, every street, everyone, reminds you of the memories you hold dearly close to your heart no matter how hurt it is to remember for you refuse to ever forget about it. It hurts so much it does, but that’s the price you have to pay.
The first time she saw him again after going back from the 60s with the dysfunctional bunch of siblings, she thought she was dreaming. Perhaps, it’ll be easier if it were just a dream. Cause now she has to look at the face—at the body of someone who once had loved her and found nothing. A stranger with the face of the love of her life.
Same name. Same face. Different memories.
But does it all even matter now? The world is ending in hours. She could meet her Ben again, that only if he really does exist. She has never been the one to fully understand the concept of time and Five doesn’t speak in a language that she is capable of understanding.
She raised her glass of champagne in Luther’s direction as he danced with his newfound love before averting her gaze to take a look around the room. Diego and Lila being in each other's arms. Klaus being Klaus. Five who seem to be enjoying his time with the number of empty glasses on his table. And lastly, him. Sitting on the table far back from everybody else, drinking quietly as his eyes, too, roamed around the room. Even from a distance between the two, she could tell that he was judging all of them silently.
Slowly she rose and walked toward him with her glass wrapped around her fingers. Once she arrived at the spot, she gestured to the seat next to him. “May I?” Without hearing any response from him, she sat herself on the seat, putting her glass on the table. “The party is over there yet you distance yourself from the others, emo boy.”
He rolled his eyes at the nickname she gave him. “If anyone here is emo that would be your brother. All brooding, laying down alone in my room, wearing nothing but black.” He looked over at Viktor and she followed his line of gaze. “First, Viktor isn’t emo, and second, you just prove my point here.” She gestured to his situation right now. “You just described yourself.”
The look in his eyes was nothing like her Ben as he glared at her, glass tightly wrapped around his fingers. “Look, if you’re going here just to brag about your oh-so-perfect Ben. The others had took their chance every time they passed me so don’t even bother.” He leaned forwards to her—trying to somewhat looking intimidating as she looks at him, totally unfazed by it.
“No.” She leaned closer to him as he leaned back, clicking her glass with his. “That is a too sensitive topic for me to talk about. Actually, I was trying to give you some company.”
“Well, I don’t need your company.” He talked back.
She leaned her back on the seat. “Too bad. I’m already comfortable sitting here.”
“Then I’ll just go away from here.” He got up, looking at her irritatingly, clearly annoyed by her presence. Turning around he began to walked away from the girl that has been haunting his mind, but then she said something that made him stop. “You know you don’t want to, Ben. You wished to stay here. You want someone to tell you to stay. So here I am doing you a favor by saying this.”
Walking back towards her, he pointed his finger right in front of her face, a look of exasperation plastered on his face. “You stay out of my head. Don’t even try to use it on me.” He said. “You think you know me. You know nothing about me. Nothing. I don’t need your company and I most certainly don’t need your pity. I don’t need you.”
Her gaze softened at his words, his last words may hurt a part of her but it was nothing she hadn’t heard before. “I don’t need my powers to know what you’re thinking, Ben. Besides, it never works on you. Not on you. Not on any version of you, I suppose.” She looks back to her glass, avoiding his gaze before feeling him walking away from her.
***
Looking at Luther and Sloane, she offered them a large smile. “I’m happy for the both of you. Wish we could have more time to know each other, Sloane.” She said, eyes falling onto the girl that is wrapped around Luther’s arms before looking back at the sky that is torn apart every second that passed. “With the world ending, there’s nothing anyone wants more than spending time with their loved ones. I know I would do the same.” She could feel Luther’s eyes on her as she said that. “Cherish the time you have left together, okay?” That were the last words she uttered before she went back inside the building, leaving the newlywed to have their moments alone.
What she didn’t know was the fact that Ben was listening to her words as he finally succeed to get rid of Klaus’s presence. He was about to grab another drink when he heard her saying that. Spending time with their loved ones. What is left of his family are only Sloane and Reginald. One who is currently with the man of her life. The other one probably conspiring something against someone. Sloane, his sister, what left of his bunch of adoptive siblings, sure there’s a part of him that cares for her although he won’t admit it out loud. On the other side, Reginald doesn’t deserve any love from anyone in the building. An ounce of him may won’t stop trying to prove himself to the guy but he’s sure that there is no love that he holds for the old man.
Before the girl who just entered the building could fully walk passed him, he grabbed her wrist, stopping her in her tracks. She looked at him expectedly, a look of nostalgia flashed for a second. Perhaps it’s the alcohol talking, but the words come out of his mouth without permission at all. “Want a drink?”
She let her hand out of his grasp, raising one of her eyebrows. “Did Klaus really manage to talk some sense into you? Or is it the alcohol talking?” She paused before answering the real question. “The answer’s yes by the way. But not here. Let’s go somewhere else.”
***
“A windowsill?”
“A quite spacious one, yeah.” She put herself in a comfortable position before patting the space in front of her. “Come on. There’s still much room left here.” Rolling his eyes slightly, he sighed before sitting in front of her. Both of them facing each other, on the windowsill as the world out there is falling apart. Her gaze stayed on him as he sat there trying to search for a comfortable position. A nostalgic smile went onto her face. Happiness and sadness all become one as a glimpse of her Ben took over his position for some split second.
A memory from her past.
“Out of every place in this goddamn hotel, you-“ He began to complain.
“Hey, the world is falling apart. Be grateful for a few seconds.” She looked out the window. “Ben would’ve loved this.” She muttered loud enough for him to hear.
“I am Ben.”
“Well, not you. I mean Ben Ben.”
“The other Ben?”
“No. You’re the—Can you just drink it already and try to not be an asshole?” She almost forced the alcohol down his throat if it weren’t for him who already doing that as she spoke before. She looked at him before averting her attention to her glass, muttering under her breath. “Maybe this is a bad idea.”
“Not really. No.” His response caught her off guard as she wasn’t expecting him to even hear her. She pursed her lips, before taking a sip from her glass. “So you do need some company. Is this your attempt to not be alone at the end of the world? Was it because of the speech I gave earlier?” She put it down and then propped her chin on the top of her knee.
This time, he is the one that avoids her gaze, looking at the falling word around them from the window. “I thought you said it didn’t work on me.”
“Just because my powers don’t work on you. Doesn’t mean I’m an idiot who cannot connect the two dots together, emo boy.” She said.
He looks down for a few moments before looking back at her, an uncharacteristic look on his face. “Guess that—guess that makes me a special emo boy or what?” This time he didn’t complain about the nickname. Instead, he said the words that brings a smile to her face. She nodded slowly before leaning back to the window frame and with teary eyes she lets out a chuckle. “What?” He asked, raising one of his eyebrows.
“You’re making it difficult for me to not cry. You see, you’re not supposed to say that. Not with that face.” She paused, taking a deep breath trying to not let the tears out just yet. “Gosh, you don’t just look like him or sound like him. Now, you talked like him. I suppose my prayers are granted in a way. I see you again now. Breathing and alive. Just not—just not the you that I need. It hurts looking into your eyes when all I see is him and yet there is no trace of him in this falling world.”
“What was he like?” His gaze stayed on her, less tense than usual. “Truly. What was he like?” He asked once more.
“What did the others say?” She asked back.
Hesitantly, he answered her question. “He was……kind. Selfless. A tiny dark cloud on a perfect sunny day. A know-it-all. A scold. Most of them-Most of them are bad qualities.” He furrowed his eyebrows together and seems to be frustrated not being able to decipher why the other Ben was so special compared to him. “I’m the Number One. Numero Uno. He wasn’t, was he? All of those praises about him, look how he ended up 6 feet under.”
Brushing over his last comment, she nodded her head. “Well all of them are true. He was a great guy, wasn’t he? One of the best that I ever knew.” Her eyes trailed over the window. “I first met them all when I was around the age of 8 or 9. He was hiding behind Klaus or Number 4 at that moment. He was never been the one to love the public attention but somehow tried to gain mine. I suppose that makes him sweet. After his death, none of us have been the same. All of us were drowning in a sense, well we all have been drowning for a long time. But since that happened, none of us could ever reach the shore.” Her chest got heavy just from thinking of that feeling.
“Where are you now?” He inched closer towards her.
She pursed her lips before letting out a deep breath. “Just floating around, I guess? Not drowning but not completely free either.” She thought about her last interaction with Ben. “Perhaps this is it. With the world ending, I’m getting closer to my final destination.”
Looking back at him, she continued her words. “Ben. He was-He was easier to love out of everyone in that room earlier, out of all the people I’ve known in my whole life. And mind you remember this, I love all of them greatly—well not all of them,” She referred to Reginald. “We all have a fair share of memories together, mostly in our youthful days that are full of trauma created by your daddy dearest—even I had some of mine too and I’m not even a Hargreeves.” Both of them chuckled at her words.
“Very much relatable that last bit. Klaus said a similar thing earlier. About how he was easier to love.” Ben inched closer once more, perhaps this is the alcohol talking, but seeing him open up his feelings to her like this makes her pay no mind to the fact that by tomorrow he’ll probably change into hard-shell Ben again. “That doesn’t seem fair. All of you love him like that yet none can do the same for me.”
Biting back a snarky remark, she decided to say something else instead. “One thing about him is that he makes love seem to be a casual thing to feel, I mean it is, truthfully it is but not many people have the opportunity to realize that.” She wiped a single tear away. “There are a lot of things to pay for when it comes to love. To any kind of love. Meeting you is one of those. The price I have to pay for this moment is not a kind one.”
He nodded quietly before looking back directly into her eyes. “I’m not him, you know?”
She chuckled at his words. “Of course, you’re not. I’ve said that already. If yes then I won’t be just sitting in front of you right now.” I would hold you and never let go like you had wished once before your last moments. The last part remained in her mind. Glimpses of them together flowed around the two, yet she was the only one to remember. “It is a lonely thing, isn’t it? To remember when the other person doesn’t.”
“What if……the other person does?” Her head snapped back towards him as he said so. Letting out a shuddered breath, she opened her mouth to ask what he means by that but she wasn’t able to find her voice at all. Then he continued his words. “You know what sucks, you have all of these memories with your Ben and I-” He took a glance at the sky before looking back at her. “And the only recollection I have about you is the one I had in my dreams. The one that I forgot the moment that I woke up. The one I wished to remember because there’s this feeling that I can’t understand every time I am in that dream.”
“You said all you see when you look into my eyes are him. Yet when I see into yours all I see is you. No other version you. Just you you cause you’re the same one from my dreams. The dreams that left only glimpses in my memory. But then even in those dreams, you were with him, I suppose. That happy feeling was his feelings, it was never mine, to begin with. All this time I was dreaming of someone else’s memories.” Tears stream down her face as she takes in the look in his eyes, the same look he used to give her.
This Ben would never be her Ben. He was already gone from her world. Leaving nothing but the memories that remain in her heart. Nothing but the feeling that she would always feel till the moment she passed. Meeting this Ben had brought heavy feelings to her heart. Makes her yearn to see a glimpse of him in his eyes. And when she found what she was looking for, hurt was all she found. “I’m sorry, Ben.”
He smiled bitterly. “Out of everyone, I thought you hated me the most.” He said. Recalling her avoiding him at all cost during their first interactions when the Umbrella first comes back to the timeline. The look in her eyes when she first laid her gaze on him was one that he will not forget.
She looked at him with sadness in her eyes. “That is an ability that I am not capable of. I cannot afford that. I don’t think I could even if I tried. You’re too much like him. Any version of you they all-well, I’ve only met two of you but you’re much more alike than I thought you do. Your feelings. The way both of you feel, I found it beautiful.”
A comfortable silence engulfed both of them as the two leaned back to the window frame simultaneously. The world is still falling around them. Slowly fading away from reality. Most people are already gone, reuniting with their loved ones on the other side.
“You were right.” His voice makes her look back at him. He offered the palm of his hand to her, so she made up a scissor using her point and middle finger. “I won.” She said with a large smile on her face.
Ben rolled his eyes. “You’re so childish. I couldn’t see why he loved you so much.” He said, clearly lying.
She crossed her arms. “Oh, the alcohol finally worn out? I was enjoying the non-asshole you.”
“Oh shut up.” He hushed her.
“What was I right about?” She waited for his response.
He met her eyes once more. She could tell that he was hesitant about it. “With the world ending, there’s nothing anyone wants more than spending time with their loved ones. Any kind of love.” Her eyes stayed locked with him as she reached for his palm once more, a warm smile on her face.
“Any kind of love.” She replied back.

glimpse of us ☆ ben hargreeves
Tumblr media
genre: angst, no comfort no fluff warnings: HEAVY discussions of death and grief, also reader is at a therapist for 90% of this summary: you talk to someone about how to stop grieving ben. notes: i heard the new joji song and it spurred me to write this i apologize in advance
“have you seen someone for these problems before?”
“no.”
the woman in front of you continued typing on her laptop, muttering something you couldn’t make out.
“how old were you when this happened?”
“sixteen.”
“and you never saw someone until now?”
“no.”
you felt like the conversation was going nowhere, the clock ticking on the wall and the doctor’s loud typing irritating you beyond belief.
“tell me about it.”
you were somewhat startled by the sudden question. how could you begin to explain the years of anguish and grief that had built in your heart?
“like…how it happened? or how he died, or-“
“just anything. all of it.”
you didn’t know how to put it into words. you weren’t sure you could remember it at all.
“it’s gotten foggier as i’ve gotten older. but i remember his sister calling me, bawling her eyes out.” you started, a familiar lump forming in your throat as you recounted the worst night of your life. “she…she told he died while trying to help someone.”
“i didn’t get to go to the funeral. his dad wouldn’t let me.”
a noise of surprise came from her throat at that statement, but she made no move to add anything.
“they- his sister, and his brothers, they snuck me to his grave, which was on their property. they had a…statue, and a grave, with his name and picture on it.” your voice broke as the memory of seeing ben’s memorial burned in your mind, and you felt a tear slide down your cheek.
“i didn’t do anything. i don’t think i cried. i just stared.”
you stared at the woman expectantly, ignoring the tears that were pouring down your cheeks.
“do you still talk to his sister and brothers?”
“no. they have enough issues, they don’t need me piling my things on top of them.”
she began typing at your words, and you internally cringed at how stupid the words sounded.
“if you were close, you wouldn’t be a burden.”
“okay.”
silence blanketed the room as you tried to muffle the sniffles that were slipping from your mouth.
“do you still think about him?”
of course you thought about him.
you thought about him in the morning, and at night. when you had a particularly sweet glass of lemonade. when you laughed so hard your sides hurt. when the sunset was so mesmerizing it took your breath away. when you had moments of silence where you could take in life.
you thought of him every time.
“yeah. all the time.”
“you’ve never had the time to grieve for him, that’s for sure. have you thought about reaching out to his siblings again?”
yes you had. the problem was, you had no idea where to start. allison was a famous actress, who probably didn’t remember you. viktor had written his book and disappeared. and as for klaus, luther, and diego, you had no idea where to start.
“it…would be extremely hard to contact them. i think it’d be easier if i stayed away from them.”
“but you could see his memorial again if you reconciled with them, yes?”
a noise of frustration almost slipped from your lips, but you pushed it down.
“yeah. i guess so.”
“it’s just something to consider.” she said softly, and you nodded curtly, clenching your fists at your side discreetly.
“as for the pain that you’re carrying currently.”
you looked up at the woman, hoping that there would be some magic cure to forget about ben.
“you never got to say goodbye to him. you didn’t get to go to his funeral. you never got closure. this is something that’s been weighing heavily on you for about fourteen years, and that pain won’t be easy to undo.”
“so it’s pointless?”
“not at all. i said it wouldn’t be easy, not that it would be impossible.”
“that’s a relief.”
the session wrapped up quickly after that, and you made your way home posthaste.
although, it became apparent that your brain had other plans, as you ended up outside of the umbrella academy.
it was just how you remembered it. tall, looking over the street with a sense of eeriness and despair.
so many wretched things had happened there that you couldn’t ever look at it in a normal light again.
to your shock, the door of the academy opened, and your eyes widened as allison exited.
“allison?”
she looked up, recognition crossing her features as her jaw dropped.
“hi honey, it’s been so long! how are you?” she exclaimed, descending the stairs and opening the large metal gate to meet you.
“i’m good,” you lied. “how are you?“
it suddenly crossed your mind that reginald had died yesterday, and you felt heat rise to your face at the comment.
“i’m sorry, that was rude. is everyone handling it okay?”
“as best as we can, yes.”
you nodded, both of you sharing a small smile before an inkling of an idea presented itself.
“i’m sure you don’t use your powers much, and if you say no, i’ll understand. but can i ask you to do something for me?”
she furrowed her brows, letting out a small chuckle.
“i’ll tell ya what- you were my favorite honorary sibling. so i’ll do whatever i can, within reason.”
she was smiling, but tears had begun to pool in your eyes once again.
“can you make me forget about ben?”

sold | umbrella!ben hargreeves x reader
Tumblr media
summary : ben bought a book he already read and own after feeling a spark between the two of you.
A/N : this is based on this justin's tweet. please tell me what do you think of this one! it would really mean a lot to me if you do. pls excuse my bad grammar and writing, english isn't my first language. [GIF IS MINE]
Ben walked into the bookstore with his hand holding a cup of coffee along with a paper bag of croissants between his fingers. It's a miracle that the bag hasn't fallen out of his grasp yet, maybe those mornings with coffees and pastries from his favorite bakery downtown gave him a new useful skill.
He honestly wasn't planning on stopping by anywhere this morning, he needs to be present for a class today—he knows Dr. Jamison will absolutely be furious if he's late but he can't shake off the feeling of this newly opened bookshop that has been pulling him in ever since it opened last Friday.
It's not like he ran out of books to read or something, but it can't hurt to just explore and roam for a bit, can it? College has been stressing him out too, so might as well take some stress off.
Ben found himself walking towards the horror section, his eyes roamed through the dark-coded covers and grabbed the one that stood out. The cover was a pair of collided shadows of two girls facing off each other, the background was like the color of an old paper that had been left in the sunlight.
He flipped it to read the back of the book, but all he found was reviews of other authors. He sighed and went to put the novel back to its shelf but a voice from the other side of the room stopped him.
"The dead and the dark," said the voice behind him, "My favorite."
Ben turned around to find its owner and was met by your beautiful face. He spaced out for a while before shooting you a small smile. "What is it about?"
"Two girls went ghost-hunting to find their missing friends." you said, "Well—somewhere around that area, I could never remember the plot of a book that well." You chuckled.
Ben couldn't help but laugh along with the sound of your laughter. It leaves a nice and warm feeling in his chest and he never wants that feeling to go away. So he went on and asked, "Do you think you can give me any recommendations?"
"Sure!" you said, "What kind of genre do you like?"
"I love classics, but I don't mind reading any other genre."
You hummed, leading him to the fiction section and immediately found what you were looking for. You grabbed the book from the shelf and handed it to him, "I personally love this one."
Ben turned the book to read the synopsis as you explained the novel in your own way. He's read this before, but couldn't remember when. He turned it around to examine the cover and it finally clicked. He already bought this novel last month.
He wanted to cut you off and say that he already read it but the way you explained the plot of the novel with so much passion made that warm feeling in his chest sparks again. It was as if you're enchanting him with magic.
"I'm sold." he said with no hesitation before you can even finish. That earned a laugh and another smile from you that makes his heart swell in happiness.
Who cares if he already read the book and bought it again because something sparked between the two of you? It doesn't harm anyone—hell, he'd do it all over again if that means he'll hear your beautiful laughter again.

It had all been too good, you and ben had been secretly dating and things really seemed to work out, with your siblings busy adapting on the new timeline it hadn't been hard to date with ben.
You and ben had done a lot of things these months together, having sex had been one of them, so you shouldn't be surprised that the pregnancy test came back positive, you shouldn't, but you were.
"Shit" you mumbled, the thought of carrying Ben's child made you want to scream;you loved Ben and he loved you too, but damn it, you two had been sneaking out for half a year, no one hadn't even considered the idea of getting married and now it turned out that you and ben were going to have a child.
Your brothers weren't going to be very happy with the news, you weren't even sure if Ben was.
*✧・゚
You wanted to throw up. It was just too much. And it wasn't helping that they all were arguing at the same time, why couldn't they get along for five minutes?
You could hear Allison mutter something sarcastic to Viktor while Diego and Ben argued in their native tongues.
"Ben, we have to talk" it had been a soft whisper, no one had heard you, . You just wanted to cry, the world was going to end and you didn't want to keep the secret any longer so you just let it out.
"I'm pregnant" suddenly the room went silent, all eyes in the room were now on you.
"Excuse me, what did you say?" That had been Luther.
"I'm pregnant" you repeated, their surprised faces were a whole poem, in other circumstances, you would have laughed.
" Five, you'll be uncle. A little one." Lila spoke.
Ben looked at you with eyes wide open , he tried to say something but Diego spoke first
" who is the father?"
"I don't think that matters" Viktor murmured as he smiled at you, the rest of your siblings agreed with Viktor.
*✧・
"Are you going to stop ignoring me?" you had finally found ben in one of the hotel rooms, he had left you alone with your siblings.
Ben looked at you "I just can't believe it, how did it happen?" you let out a dry laugh at his question
"you know exactly how it happened ben" of course he knew it.
Ben sighed "I'm not sure I'm a good father y/n"
"Do you think I am? Damn it Ben, I don't know anything about babies, I'm scared, I don't want to do this alone" finally your lover hugged you, wrapping your body in his arms as you hid your face in his neck.
"I'm sorry this is so sudden, but we'll do this together" he promised leaving a kiss on your temple "I hope the baby takes after you " he mumbled cradling your face in his hands before leaning down and kissing you properly.
You clung to his jacket pulling him closer to you, you loved him so much even though he sometimes acted like a jerk.
Ben broke the kiss, leaning his forehead against yours as his hand reached under your clothes to touch your bare belly, you and ben smiled as ben caressed your little bulge.
"by the way, Diego is looking for you, he put the clues together and he knows you're the dad " Ben gasped making you laugh "Don't worry, I won't let him hurt you" you kissed his cheek

AN: I love this request so much! I chose Umbrella!Ben bc he's the loml, I hope you don't mind. I also didn't know if you wanted him to be alive or not so this is Ghost!Ben with a twist.
-
Promises - Ben Hargreeves
Warnings: mentions of death, sexual references, angst, fluff.
Tumblr media
Ben had always loved you; he couldn't remember a time when you hadn't held residence in his mind. Klaus had introduced the two of you—sadly after Bens passing—and somehow, under some miracle, you had been able to see and talk to him. Perhaps that was why Klaus had brought you together in the first place. Maybe he had known all along.
You'd bonded with Klaus as well, mainly for the purpose of pulling pranks on Ben—pranks of which never worked, considering the ghost boy always knew what you were up to.
Your bond with Ben, however, was something different. He was head over heels for you, and not only because you were the only other person besides Klaus that could see him. He found himself enjoying your company more than he had anyone else's, indulging in your laughs and smiles, as if they were a delicacy.
When Five announced the apocalypse, there was no laughing, or happiness of any kind. As one would expect when the world was ending, deep depressions settled over everyone that knew of what was to become of the world. You'd gone home as soon as Five let the news loose, wanting some space to clear your head away from the umbrella academy heroes. Ben had followed you, leaving Klaus unattended, not that he would listen to Ben's warnings if he stayed.
"Look, Y/N" Ben appeared by your side as you collapsed onto your couch, head in your hands. "We're gonna make it out of this". Ben wasn't sure of his statement but spoke it anyway needing something comforting to say to you.
"You can't be sure of that Ben" Your head still sat in your hands and Ben wanted desperately for you to look at him. Then he could see your face, scan all your features so he would remember every detail of you no matter what happened.
After a moment he brought himself to speak, "I won't let anything happen to you, okay?".
You turned to him then, lifting your head from your hands but not in the way Ben had hoped. You were hopelessly upset, and Ben could tell well before you spoke. "But you're dead Ben, and I'm no hero. I'm just human, normal, average. I can't save us".
You seemed to notice where you'd gone wrong as soon as the words left your lips, having brought up the death of Ben in a conversation that was meant to be built on reassurance. "Ben I'm so sorry, that came out wrong-" Ben stopped you, smiling the despite the harsh truth. "It's okay".
You shook your head, placing your face in your hands once again "No, it's not, that was mean. I'm sorry".
Being a ghost was difficult, specifically when Ben wanted to reassure you. "Look Y/N, it's just the apocalypse, it's not like it's the end of the world".
You laughed at that, and Ben loved the sound. If he could, he would listen to it on repeat, put it on a record and never stop the turntable.
"Technically it is the end of the world" You were looking at him, the smile that he loved threatening to spill, though your eyes were brimmed with tears. Death was inevitable, you just didn't think it would come for you this soon.
"You promise we'll be okay?" Your question was a commitment impossible to keep but Ben nodded, wanting more than anything to put his arm around you.
"Yeah, I promise".
-
A few days passed and you had pulled yourself together enough to think about things other than your impending demise for a few minutes, before of course falling into a pit of sadness, anger, and frustration once again. Ben's promise did nothing to ease your mind, and you knew it never would. There was no saving you, or anyone. Maybe being okay meant being with him in the afterlife. You sure as hell found yourself heading there.
"You're thinking about death again, aren't you?" The voice of Klaus interrupted your thoughts, cheerful despite it all.
"Of course I am Klaus, it’s my future and it awaits me". You sent him a venomous smile, though you wanted to stop yourself from doing so. Klaus had done nothing wrong, but you couldn't stop your harsh comments, having turned into a pessimist over the last few days.
"Hey, it’s time to be happy! Five has a plan" He drew out the name of his brother, as if mention of the grumpy being would ease your mind.
"What is this plan exactly Klaus?"
"Well, I wasn't really listening, but I'm sure Five could tell you if you go talk to him" Klaus claps his hands together and you roll your eyes. As if it was easy to talk to Five. As you weren't one of his superpowered siblings, the boy wouldn't even lend you a glance.
"You know what Klaus? When the world is in fact not at its end, I'll be happy, but for now I wish to sit and bathe in everything I'm about to lose. My life for example" You stand as you speak, Klaus moving to take your spot on the loveseat in your living room. He'd always loved the spot and makes himself comfortable quickly.
It's then you see Ben standing in the doorway, arms folded like usual.
"Quite an impressive stance you have there Benerino, is there someone you're trying to impress?" Klaus teases Ben with a grin, having known about his crush on you since it started.
"He hasn't got anyone to impress" You wave the comment off, though you smile at Ben as you move past him to the kitchen.
"Ohh, I'm sure you are well worth impressing Y/N" Klaus continues and Ben hisses at him before moving into the kitchen after you. His brother could drive him into the grave if he wasn't already dead.
"Y/N, I know you're sick of hearing this but it's gonna be okay"
"Oh yeah, because Five's got a plan, right?" You spin to face him, though it's not anger in your eyes, it's fear.
It makes Ben ache, the thought that you are deathly afraid of, well, death. He doesn't want you to die either, knowing you have so much more to do with your life, a thousand things that he couldn't do with his own. He also knows there is a chance he won't see you again, even if you join the afterlife. To him that's too much to risk.
It's then that—if it wasn't already before—making sure you both survive the end of the world becomes Ben's top priority. He knows it's not a realistic hope to have that the both of you will survive, but Ben doesn't care. He wants you to live so he can haunt you forever.
-
The way Ben goes about this is through Klaus.
"Go, tell him what I said!".
Klaus looks at him with something of a frown, though, it's difficult to tell. "You go and tell him Ben, don't bully me into doing your ghostly dirty work".
Ben groans loudly, only for the ears of Klaus to hear. "That's exactly the point Klaus, I can't talk to him, I'm dead. But I can talk to you and you," Ben gestures toward the short yet old man just a few feet away, "can talk to him".
Klaus considers this, placing a finger to his lips in thought. Then he glances to Five who was currently, scolding Luther for "being a useless lump of clay". Klaus shakes his head "Nope, not talking to teenage grandpa".
He struts away then, as if he can escape Ben's pestering, instantly being followed by said boy. "Klaus, I'm begging you".
Klaus keeps walking, not sparing a glance to his brother "I only like begging in the bedroom little bro, and from people who are not you".
"Okay ew," Ben stops in his tracks at the words but continues to speak despite Klaus blocking his ears like a child. "Klaus, I want to save Y/N, and I know you do too".
Klaus pauses then, turns still with his hands covering his ears "You're so in love with them, aren't you?". Ben goes to respond, deny the statement, or perhaps confirm it, but he doesn't even have the chance to think about it before Klaus continues. "I mean, I knew you liked them, a lot, but you my brother, have caught the lovebug".
"The lovebug?" Ben folds his arms, defensive. He knows what Klaus says is true, always has been. He admitted such a fact to himself long ago, but his stubbornness sticks like a glue in not admitting it aloud.
"Ben, Ben, Ben. You are in love". Klaus comes over then, smug smile on his lips and arms extended in a hug like fashion, though, he would go straight through his brother if he tried.
Ben decides upon not saying a thing, a simple eye roll coming as his only response to the tease. This only fires up Klaus more, the man jumping up and down on the balls of his feet. "I think you should tell them".
"What?".
"I, your brother, think that you Ben Hargreeves should admit your feelings for Y/N" There's a pause and Klaus leans in closer "Before it's too late".
-
Ben thought over Klaus's words carefully and decided upon one thing. He would tell you how he felt, but not because it was the end of the world, and not before it was too late. He was getting the both of you out of this apocalypse in one piece, even if it cost him everything. There would be no 'too late'.
Currently Ben stood in your living room, trying to convince himself that his feelings were worth sharing, that above everything they were better than a goodbye, that they wouldn't push you away. It was too late to back out now, and if he did Klaus would most likely throw him under the bus later, spilling the beans like he always did with every secret he held.
It was then that you entered your house, jumping at the sight of Ben, pacing within your place like an anxious puppy.
"Jesus Ben!" You held a hand to your chest, backpack gripped in the other as you kicked the door closed. "What are you doing here?".
Ben froze for a second at the sight of you, the best person he'd ever known, whether he'd been alive in his time of knowing you or not. He ran over the words he was to say in his head. "I wanted to tell you something". It wasn't how he'd intended to start the conversation, but it would have to do.
"What'd you want to tell me?" You have your back to Ben now, placing your backpack on the kitchen bench and pulling out various food items. Ben counts two boxes of microwave rice risotto and a block of cheese before he loses focus. Ben can't bring himself to confess when he doesn't know if you're truly listening. If he's going to do this, he wants your full attention, and by the looks of it he's going to have to take it.
He moves quickly taking your hand just before you can grab anything else from your bag of wonders, and it's then that you turn to him, eyes sinking into his. You hold a frown, creases in your brows that Ben wants to smooth out with the pad of his thumb.
"I want to tell you something important-"
Ben is cut off as your gaze shifts from his eyes to his hand, still holding your own. "Ben," Your voice is full of confusion, "you're touching me".
It's then that the feeling of your skin on his registers in his mind, and his mind seems to blur with the contact, something he hadn't felt in so long.
"Is this what you wanted to tell me?" Your voice is quiet, still staring down at that of the skin on skin contact. Ben's staring at it too, your hands intertwined, and somehow a laugh escapes him.
"No, what I wanted to tell you was different. So different".
You manage to pull your eyes away from your hands, though, it had been hard, to look at Ben's face, scanning him for answers. Answers that he didn't have, that was, if you were looking for something to explain the contact.
"What were you going to tell me?" You’re looking into his eyes now, and he can tell that you want to reach out, see if your hand won't just go straight through him, but you don't.
Ben is quiet for a moment, afraid that if he lets go of your hand now, he will never be able to hold it again. Then he finds it in himself to speak. "I wanted to tell you how much I care about you" Ben stops closing his eyes tightly as he wills the right words to come to mind. As much as he hates to admit it, he's thinking of what Klaus would do. When he opens them again, you're looking at him with deep concern. "Ben?". The way you say his name drives him crazy, somehow pushing him forward, giving him the strength to confess.
"I care about you, in more than a friend way". He can't bring himself to say that four letter word. He wants to tell you that after you both survive this. After the two of you make it out alive, flipping off the end of the world with grins on your faces.
When the words leave his lips, you stare at him with something he can't understand, he feels you squeeze his hand and then you let go, and Ben's heart sinks at never being able to touch you again. And then you hug him. You hug him, bringing him close to you, arms around his neck and smiling into his shoulder. Ben is stunned at first, head spinning at having you this close, before he wraps his arms around you, trying to push back tears of relief.
It takes a long time for the both of you to pull away, and when you do Ben makes sure to keep his hand intertwined with yours. He doesn't want your touch to disappear just yet.
"I always keep my promises". His voice is soft, quiet, and you find yourself moving in closer, though you can hear him just fine. You say nothing, and you don't need to say anything. "I promised you that we would make it out of this, that we would survive whatever the fuck this apocalypse is. I'm keeping that promise, okay?".
All you do is nod, but there are tears in your eyes and you're smiling. Really smiling. Ben allows himself to do the same, and somehow that makes everything better. He knows that you'll survive this, together.

Just You and Me
Pairings — Ben Hargreeves x GN!Reader
Summary — Ben didn’t know how long he had left to live, he didn’t get to say everything he wanted to tell you.
Warnings — swearing, mild angst towards the end, mention of death, tell me if I missed any <3
A/N — this is my first official post on tumblr! I’m sorry to the ones who wanted the heavy angst but that’s not until part two (if you want a second part). This is a different writing style than what I’m used to, please give any constructive criticism. Y/n’s pronouns are they/them and Klaus’s pronouns are he/they.
Tumblr media
Being Reginald Hargreeves's child isn't easy. Constant training, missions left and right, it all seems endless and you'd never have a normal childhood. His children have several ways of coping.
Klaus sneaks out of the house to go to parties, intoxicating himself with liquor and weed.
Luther and Allison spend too much time together to forget and run away from responsibilities.
Viktor plays violin because he was convinced he was ordinary, powerless, and different from his siblings. This made him question why Reginald had him to begin with.
Diego distracted himself with anything he could. He would go out and look for conflict just so he could end it and save the day. He needed action, he needed something to keep his mind racing so he won't worry about his home and relationship with his father. He needed praise to feel validated, some would say he has and is experiencing some sort of hero syndrome.
Ben? He loved to paint and sketch. He would lock himself in his room for hours just to be alone to create art. There were papers taped to the wall, canvases hung from several of his works.
"I don't understand the craze with glazed donuts. I really don't." Klaus bit into a fresh jelly donut, rolling his eyes back as he savoured the flavour that exploded into his mouth.
The children escaped again.
They snuck out to have donuts and coffee. It was tradition, and somehow they get away with it. Every 12th of the month at 10:00pm they would leave the house and walk to Griddy's Doughnuts.
"Glazed donuts are amazing. They're simple yet sweet," Ben defended his regular order, taking small bites to properly enjoy the donut while he watched Klaus finish his in two bites.
"That's disgusting." Allison laughed, eying her sibling.
"What's wrong with it?" Klaus licked their fingers, downing their cup of coffee all in one. "It's less messy that way."
"No, it isn't!"
Ben began to slowly drown out the sounds of his siblings arguing. His attention made its way across the cafe, his gaze falling upon a teenager who sat alone at a booth. He could've sworn he's seen them before, he could've sworn they met, but at the same time, he knew for a fact that this was his first time laying his eyes on you.
"..Ben? Ben? Earth to Benerrino!" Klaus waved their hand in front of him and he finally snapped out of it when you looked back at him.
"Sorry?" Ben blinked a few times, looking at his sibling as he held his cup of tea in both his hands.
Klaus raised an eyebrow, looking back to see what Ben had been staring at. A smile was brought to his face when he turned back to look at Ben, eyes going wide. "Ben! You think that person is cute, right?"
"Shh! Shh!" Ben clasped a hand over their mouth, glancing over at the teenager to see if they heard.
And sure enough, you did.
"I'm flattered." You said, earning the attention of all six Hargreeves siblings. "Thanks, Ben."
Number Six seemed to stop working for a moment. His eyes widened as he stared at you in shock, face covered with a cherry red hue. "Y-Yeah. Yeah, you— yeah." He smiled and nodded, sipping from his cup as he turned away.
"Bennerino~" Klaus gave his brother a wink, sticking his tongue out as he paid for his snacks.
"Klaus!" Ben whisper-shouted, giving them a death glare as he finished his cup of tea. One after the other, each sibling finished, paid, and walked back home.
Ben couldn't help but spare a glance, looking back at you as he and his siblings exited the shop.
When he looked back at the path in front of him, he caught Klaus's stare in his peripheral vision. He gave them a scoff, rolling his eyes as he stuffed his hands in the pockets of his leather jacket, darting away before Klaus could annoy him with their bickering.

Being Reginald Hargreeves's child isn't easy. Constant training, missions left and right, it all seems endless and you'd never have a normal childhood. His children have several ways of coping.
Klaus sneaks out of the house and attends teenage parties while doping and drinking himself silly.
Allison and Luther spend inordinate amounts of time together letting their responsibilities slip their minds.
Viktor plays the violin because he believes he is unexceptional, weak, and distinct from his siblings. He knows he's different and every day he asks himself why Reginald chose to keep him, or why Reginald even took him in the first place if all Viktor ever got was neglect.
Diego tries to divert his attention from his family life in every way he can. He needs action to keep his mind active. He needs validation to keep going. He needs to be seen as a hero.
Ben creates art.
Ever since that day at the cafe, you didn’t leave his mind. He dedicated his free time to a new work of art. The inspiration was you.
His delicate fingers held the piece of charcoal in a gentle, yet firm grip. With every stroke, a distinct mark was left behind. He made each line unique from the one previously. His movements were smooth, not a muscle was tensed.
When he finished, he took a deep breath. The fresh oxygen from his open window filled his lungs before escaping his lips, dusting off the excess charcoal on the page. Ben smiled at his piece, gliding the tip of his index finger along the jawline of the teenager on the paper.
It was you, the one from the cafe.
He looked out the window. He watched as the sun painted the molten sky with various reds and oranges along with dashes of purple and pink. It was a work of art within itself.
He glanced over to the clock on his wall, then back out the window. He carefully rolled the drawing in his hands, stepping outside of the window and using his tentacles to make his way down onto the grass.
He looked behind himself, searching for any sign of life through the windows of the Hargreeves Mansion. When it was clear, he ran out of the gate.
Ben sat at Griddy's Doughnuts, a cup of tea placed in both his hands while a glazed donut sat in front of him on a ceramic plate.
"You're alone?"
Ben snapped out of his thoughts, looking at the owner of the voice.
"Yeah," he responded.
Agnus knew the Hargeeeves siblings would always come in packs, she found it strange how there was only one of them at the counter. "Are you okay? Did something happen?"
Ben smiled. "Nothing bad, no. Thank you for asking, though." He hadn't remembered the last time someone asked him if he was okay and meant it. The question was simple, but hearing the sincerity behind it was enough to make him smile.
He sat there and waited. The drawing was by the plate, and he began to ponder; he began to overthink. He hadn't talked to you and he already drew you. He didn't have bad intentions, but he didn't want it to come off as creepy. He began to have second thoughts, like he was doing something wrong.
Ben finished up his tea and donut. He grabbed the drawing and placed some coins on the table before leaving the cafe. His head was down, almost ashamed even though he did nothing wrong. He pushed the door open and collided with someone.
He gasped and dropped the piece of paper and watched it fly away in the subtle breeze. Before he got to react, someone grabbed it. He looked at the person and froze.
"Sorry, I wasn't looking where I was going." You sheepishly smiled. The paper was unrolled you looked at it.
"I am so sorry." Ben bowed down to show respect. "I know it might be creepy but I promise I'm not a creep. I mean no harm, I just- I just thought that you were—"
"Cute?" You recalled what Klaus called you.
Ben stood up straight, looking at you with cherry-stained cheeks. He said nothing, not denying nor confirming the assumption.
"That's what your brother said last week." You scanned the piece of art, a 'wow' falling under your breath before you handed it back. "You're talented. I can't even draw a straight stick figure. I envy you."
"You? You envy... me?"
"Yes."
"You don't think I was being creepy?"
"No, not at all."
"Are you sure?"
"Stop overthinking it, Ben." You took a step towards the door of the cafe. "I hope to see you around more often."
Ben stilled as the corners of his lips formed a smile. He nodded, then his expression dropped, watching you walk into the shop. "Wait! What's your—"
"Y/n."
Ben paused, "Y/n?"
"That's my name."
The smile returned to his face, "thank you."
You waved, finally walking through the doors and sitting at his usual spot by the window. You looked at Ben, an instant smile lit up your face when he looked back. You held a hand up and waved, earning a rather excited wave back. You began to wonder if you would ever get a moment with Ben, even if it was just to sit together and have coffee; as friends. "There's nothing wrong with having a glazed donut."
— ( ☂︎ ) —
"See, Klaus? Even Y/n agrees that glazed donuts are amazing." Ben defended his favourite treat, biting out of the freshly glazed donut.
"I said there's nothing wrong with a glazed donut. I didn't say they were amazing." It didn't take long for you to get along with the Hargreeves siblings. Especially when Klaus kept nagging Ben to invite you.
"Ha! Y/n agrees with me!" Klaus slammed his hand against the table.
"Hey, woah, woah. I didn't say that either!" You laughed along with the others, heart filled with joy and happiness. You didn’t remember the last time you hung out with other teenagers and felt like you belonged.
"Guys, we should head out." Allison said, "it's getting late. Ben hurry up, it's two more bites. Today is on me." She pulled her wallet out.
"I can pay for my own. Thank you, though, Allison." You only had a chocolate donut. You were smart enough not to have caffeine pumping in your veins before bed.
"You guys can go out, I'll meet you there." Ben looked at you, then Klaus. Klaus smirked back, to the point where their ears began to lift.
You thought you were included in the 'you guys', so you shuffled around to get your wallet back in your pocket. Ben noticed this and quickly took your wrist.
"Not you." He spoke firmer than he intended, "please." His voice softened as he let go of your wrist, bashfully looking at the bottom of his glass while he took another bite of his donut.
You locked eyes with him, then you fell silent, sitting back down with cheeks tinted pink. “Why me?”
Ben turned away again, it was just his timid nature, this boy can never keep eye contact for too long without freaking out. “I was wondering… maybe on Friday we could meet up again?”
“This Friday? I thought Luther had something important coming up. His personal training with your father? That poor guy is going to overwork himself all day…” you looked out the window to look at the Umbrella Academy’s number one. “So we’re just gonna leave him out? If he finds out he’ll be heartbroken.”
“No, uhm…” Ben tapped the edge of his cup. “I was actually hoping it would be us? Just you and me.”
“Just you and me?” Your eyes seemed to light up the second he spoke. The most foolish smile crawled onto your face as you nodded. “Yeah.”
“Yes?”
“Yes.” You nodded, “I would love that. Just you and me.”
Ben’s heart beat out of his chest. Oh, he was such a loser in love. He nodded frantically, finishing the rest of his donut quickly. He covered his mouth as he chewed, shy and polite. He then made his way outside.
“Ready?” Allison motioned for the others to follow her as Luther walked by her side, leading the siblings back to the mansion.
“I’ll see you! Friday at noon!” Ben walked with his siblings with a hand in his pocket, the other one waving goodbye.
“Friday! Noon!” You carried through with his energy and waved back. Then you turned on your heel and went home.
— ( ☂︎ ) —
“You’re not going to get in trouble, will you?” Your cup of coffee was finished about an hour ago. An hour ago was also when you and Ben agreed to go back home and call it a day. You didn’t even recall how the conversation kept going, but it did.
“I should be fine,” Ben glanced at the clock, then back at his empty plate that once had two donuts on it. His signature glazed donut and your vanilla-sprinkled one. You got a different donut each time you came. “Thank you for coming with me today.” Words couldn’t express his gratitude, “I’m not saying that I don’t like coming here with my siblings, it’s just… good to have a real friend.”
Your heart warmed at his words, “thank you for asking me out, Ben.” You placed a hand atop his. “I really enjoyed spending time together; just you and me.”
“Do you think…” he began, “..we can see each other again? Only if you want to, that is. There’s no shame in rejecting, I don’t want you to feel obliged to say yes or anything—“
“Yes.” You said with confidence, laughing at the way he began to ramble. “I’d love to, Ben.” You gently gripped his hand, “the second date is always better than the first.”
“Yeah,” he nodded, mind empty. All he focused on was the way you hand your hand placed on his. As seconds passed, the words finally registered. “Wait, second date? This— th-this was a date?”
You instantly took your hand away, “that was my impression. I’m so sorry if I assumed wrong. I should’ve asked.” You felt foolish. You felt as though you were making bold assumptions and you read him wrong. Your ego was making the decisions. “That’s embarrassing.” You laughed it off.
“No, no! There’s nothing wrong with this being a date!” Ben grabbed both of your hands, holding them with a delicate grip. “It actually makes all of this ten times better.”
“Really?” A wave of relief washed over you as you emitted a soft sigh. “I don’t want you to feel like you have to lie to spare my feelings. I was getting a bit too ahead of myself.”
“I’m not lying,” he brushed his thumb over the back of your hand. “I mean every word.”
Butterflies swarmed in your stomach. Never once has anyone made you feel this weak in the knees. “Thank you, Ben.”
“Just know that I would never lie to you. Ever,” he moved his hand, linking his pinky with yours as if he was a seven-year-old boy. “Promise.”
The gesture was so small, so childish, “alright, then.” But this pinky promise held a special place in your heart. “Promise.”
— ( ☂︎ ) —
“Can we just stay like this?” He sat beside you on top of a building with the city beneath you. “It’s so much better up here.”
“Don’t you have a training session with your father?” You looked at him, “and you can’t miss it because that’s how you’re supposed to spend the rest of your day?”
Ben didn’t return your gaze, he just looked down at his lap with his legs swinging back and forth on the edge, “..yeah.”
“And if you don’t show up, you’ll get in trouble and he’ll get mad.”
“I know,” his voice was barely over a whisper.
“So… you should go back. I don’t want you to get in trouble with your father.” You carefully took his face in your hand, tipping his head up to look at you. “It’s okay, Ben. I’ll be fine. You can go.”
“It’s just—“ Ben sighed, shuffling around to get comfortable now that he was facing you. “I don’t want to go. If I do, he’s going to make me kill again.”
“Kill?”
He nodded, “and I don’t want to keep doing it.”
You were at loss for words. You couldn’t tell him to ‘not go’, it was his father and he couldn’t just avoid him. You noticed how he began to tremble, his hands shook along with his quivering lip. “Ben.” You held his hands, “you can drop by my place after.”
“It’s going to be late. Your parents won’t notice?” His voice rose in volume, “I-I don’t want to get you in trouble. It’s an inconvenience. It’s fine, I’ll just see you next week. It’s fine, I’ll be fine.”
“I’ll keep my window open for you.”
“No, no. You don’t have to do that. I told you, I’ll be fine.”
“If you say so,” you rubbed your thumb over the top of his hand. “I’m still going to keep it open. Just in case.”
How did he get so lucky? If someone told him one month ago that he’d make a friend that cared about him as a person rather than a member of the Umbrella Academy, he wouldn’t believe you.
“Okay,” he shot you a smile.
That smile never failed to warm your heart. “Now get us down, Benny Boy.”
He slithered his arm around your waist and you secured your hands on his shoulders. Tentacles sprouted from his back and he safely took you down the building.
“I’ve got you,” he noticed how you held onto him with a deathly grip. “I’m not gonna let you go.”
“You better not,” you laughed, burying your face into the crook of his neck with closed eyes. You took a deep breath, taking in the comforting scent that lingered in his skin and clothing.
When he made it to the ground, he ran his fingers through your hair. “You can let go now.”
You reopened your eyes, looking at the boy. The proximity was close, breathtaking. “What if I don’t want to?” You thought out loud, realizing only when his tanned cheeks tinted red.
“Then that wouldn’t be so bad, would it?” You could feel his subtle breath on your skin.
You moved a hand from his shoulder to his chest, “your heart is beating a mile a minute.” You teased.
“Who’s fault is that?” He teased you back, leaning in closer. His eyes fixated on your lips for no more than a ninth of a second before looking back at your eyes.
“Mine,” you admitted with no shame. With every passing second, Ben inched closer to your face. You looked at his lips, then his eyes as you leaned closer to him.
“I’ve never done this before,” he whispered.
“Neither have I.” You matched his tone..
“May I?”
“May you, what?” You teased him once again.
Ben paused, his breath trembled and you felt it. “May I kiss you?”
“You may.”
“Ben!” The boy was taken away from your grasp. “Dad’s been looking for you! He’s not in the best mood today, Benerrino. You know to never keep the old man waiting!”
You couldn’t even say anything, Klaus had already run off with their brother. The only thing you got was Ben’s glance back. He looked as if he was apologizing with his eyes, a deep frown engraved on his face.
“Klaus!” Ben ripped his wrist out of their grip.
“You know how strict dad is. I don’t want him to get mad at you.” He looked back, he saw you turn and walk away. “Oh shit.” He whispered under his breath, “Ben, I’m so sorry.”
“It’s fine.” His tone was sharp enough to kill. “Let’s just go see dad.”
— ( ☂︎ ) —
You haven’t left your room since you arrived home. You were still salty about the episode earlier with Ben and Klaus. You kept your word and left the window open in case Ben dropped by, but time was ticking.
11:11pm.
Curfew at the Umbrella Academy was two hours ago, so you assumed that Ben wasn’t coming. You swung your legs off the edge of your bed and slowly made your way towards the window.
“Y/n?”
“Ben?” You called out, moving your curtains out of the way. “Holy shit,” you held your hand out and helped him inside. “Careful, don’t sit on the bed.” You kept your voice in a low whisper.
He didn’t speak, he only nodded.
You rushed out of your room to grab a cloth then pulled the wooden chair from your desk when you got back. “Sit here, it’s okay. Just relax.”
“How do you expect me to relax?” His voice instantly broke as tears pooled at the bottom of his eyes. “I’ve been trying to relax, for- for the past two hours!” He was careful not to raise his voice too much.
“Are you hurt?“ You used the cloth to wipe the blood off his hands.
He shook his head.
“Did he hurt you?”
“Not physically.”
“Are you… okay?”
He shook his head, “not emotionally.”
Silence lingered in the air as you washed the blood off his skin. When you finished with his hands you went to his neck, then his face. You stopped for a moment, taking this time to cup his cheek. Ben leaned into your touch, shutting his eyes and placed a hand on top of yours. Tears silently trickled down his cheeks as he took in the comfort of your hand. You began to gently wipe the damp cloth over his blood-stained cheeks.
“Do you think I’m a monster?” He looked at you.
“No,” you stated with confidence, “no you’re not. You’re no monster. It’s not your fault. Your dad made you do it, you didn’t have a choice.” You reassured him the best you could. You’re okay now. You’re safe here.” You whispered sweet affirmations. “Thank you for choosing me, tonight.” When you finished, you placed the cloth on your desk. “I’m glad that you’re here with me, Ben.”
“Me too,” he moved away from your hand and stood up. His eyes didn’t leave yours, not once. “Can I have a hug?” A sob slipped past his lips with his words. You didn’t say anything, instantly leaning into his chest and wrapping your arms around him. He began to cry as he returned the embrace, crumpling your shirt up in his hands.
“I’m here, Ben. I’m not going anywhere.”
“You make me feel safe.” He whispered into your hair, “when I’m with you, the rest of the world melts away. Like nothing else matters but you and me.”
Those butterflies came back. They fluttered in your tummy with excitement and wonder.
“Hey, Y/n?”
“Yes?” You pulled away from the embrace but kept your hands on either side of Ben’s body. You didn’t want to let go of him, not yet.
“I’m really happy that you’re in my life.” He brushed a few strands of hair out of your face. “Being with you makes me feel stronger, and I wish you could see yourself the way I do. Because I can’t think of any word that comes close to the way you make me feel.”
You were at loss for words. You wanted nothing more than to hold him in your arms and keep him safe, away from his stupid excuse for a father. “I don’t know what to say.”
“It’s okay,” his hand rubbed your side. “You don’t have to say anything.” He looked at your lips, “you’re perfect.” His stare dallied before darting up into your eyes. “May I?”
“Yes,” you closed the gap, wrapping your arms around his neck as he engulfed your body with ease. In that moment, it was as if the world stopped spinning; like nothing else in the world mattered.
The kiss lingered, and Ben began to move his lips, slowly running his hands down your body. He held your hips in a soft grasp. Then he finally parted.
“Ben…” his name rolled off your tongue like a melody. You leaned in for another kiss, pushing him down on your mattress. He didn’t have time to react, toppling over with a giggle. “Please stay,” you gasped for air.
“Stay?” He kicked his shoes off and got comfortable on the bed, “are you sure about this?”
“Yes,” you gave him an extra pillow and laid next to him. “I want you to stay.” You snuggled up next to him.
“Hey, Y/n?”
“Mhm?”
“Can I be your boyfriend?”
Your smile lit up the dim room, “yes.” You gave him one last peck on the lips before closing your eyes to fall asleep. There was nothing more comforting than the feeling of his arms around your body, his hand running through your hair as you fall asleep.
But the next day when you awoke, he was gone.
— ( ☂︎ ) —
“Will you stay this time?” You asked for the millionth time as you laid on your boyfriend’s chest, taking a slow and deep breath as you shuffled around to get comfortable. “I want to wake up beside you this time.” The sleepiness was slowly taking over you.
“I’m sorry I didn’t stay,” Ben whispered, “I couldn’t risk my dad catching me out. It was only recently he stopped putting cameras in our rooms, if even one of us gets caught, all of us are busted.” He was truly sorry. He wanted to wake up by your side. He wanted to wake up with you in his arms. But he couldn’t risk getting his siblings in trouble.
“Cameras in your room?” Your voice was groggy, you didn’t even pay attention to what he said, you stopped processing what he said after ‘cameras in our rooms’. “That’s messed up,” your words were slurring together.
“Sleepyhead, just close your eyes and rest. You need it.”
“Mnn…”
The sound of your gentle snores filled the darkened room. He fixed his position, looking down at you while keeping you secure in his arms. His lips formed a frown as he moved bits of your hair out of your face. He planted a delicate kiss on your forehead, sighing deeply, “God, I love you…” if he got caught, his father would be furious. He knows that he’d be forbidden from seeing you, and he didn’t want to risk it. He got himself in a mess, a lovely, wonderful mess. Things would be so much easier if he didn’t love you, but he didn’t regret a single thing. He’d choose you over his father in a heartbeat.
12:00am.
He needed to get home, so he did. He carefully placed you down on the bed, properly bringing your blanket to your chin. “I’m sorry, Sweetheart.” He whispered, pressing another kiss on your forehead. “I have to go.” He spoke as though you were awake though you were fast asleep. He walked towards the window, watching as you got comfortable in your slumber. He stood by the window and stared at you. He didn’t move, he didn’t turn away, he just stared at you with pure love. You were the first to treat him right, the first to take care of him out of the kindness of your own heart, the first to truly love him, yet he always left before the morning. Not once have you woken up to him by your side. Did he deserve you.

“Ben?” You approached him and he and his siblings walked out of Griddy’s Doughnuts. It was their monthly sneak-out plan and for the first time in seven months, you didn’t tag along. “Sorry to bother you, I was going to the library, and… this was close by.”
“Going to the library? This late at night?” His eyes went wide, “it’s dangerous. You don’t know what kind of creeps are out there.”
“I’m fine, Ben. Really, I–”
“Ben, let’s go,” Luther called out.
“I need to go.” He made his way past you, but you grabbed his wrist. He turned to face you, effortlessly prying himself from your grasp.
“Can we go out on Sunday? Nothing fancy, just here.” You looked at the donut shop. “Griddy’s Doughnuts. You get the glazed donut and I’ll get the one with sprinkles?”
He squinted as he listened to you. You were being oddly specific, and it worried him. “No, sorry, I’m busy this Sunday.”
“How about Tuesday?”
“Ben! Let’s go!” Allison shouted.
“I need to go,” Ben took a few steps away from you. “I’m sorry. I’ll see you around.”
“I’ll see you–” midsentence and he was running off. “...around.” You ended up going on Wednesday, but not to Griddy’s Doughnuts. Instead you and Ben crashed in your room for the day. The second he stepped through the front door, the atmosphere changed. You didn’t know what it is, but it was heavier. It was mildly uncomfortable and you could tell Ben felt it too.
“You should go home.” Now you were laying on his chest like you always did whenever he came. You two snuggled up with each other whenever the sun began to set, that hasn’t changed. But today is different: the elephant in the room didn’t want to leave.
“It’s nine. A little early for me to leave, don’t you think?” He muttered into your hair. “Let me stay.” He remembered how you used to always ask him to stay, and now you were the one pushing him away.
You shrugged, “I’m feeling tired. I’m going to sleep early tonight.”
“I’ll stay until you fall asleep,” he brushed the back of his hand on your cheek before holding it.
“You never stay, anyways. It’s fine. Just go.” You moved away from his touch.
That was a first.
“What’s wrong?” Something was in the air before, he knew something was wrong, he knew you knew something was wrong. He acted on it first.
“Nothing.” You dismissed it.
“Y/n, you know you can talk to me.”
You shook your head, pursing your lips as you felt the tears begin to form in your eyes. “We barely see each other anymore,” you muttered, “when we do it’s… awkward. It’s not the same as before.”
“Yeah, I’m sorry.” He shut his eyes, sighing heavily. “I should’ve talked to you earlier. Shutting you out probably wasn’t the best idea.”
“What’s going on, Benny Boy?”
“Us being together… is risky. Especially with my strict dad and all. I feel like I should’ve thought about that before foolishly asking you out.” He couldn’t bear to look at you.
“What are you…” your voice trailed off into utter silence. You looked at him, desperately wanting to meet his gaze. “...what are you implying?” The second those words left your mouth, you wished they didn’t.
“I love you,” Ben began. “I may be seventeen, I may be young, and people say kids like us don’t know what love is. But I know that I really, really love you. You’re the first to see me as who I am. Not just some boy with powers, not the boy in the Umbrella Academy, not Number Six, but you see me as Ben.” He glanced down at you for a moment, but he couldn’t stand that mere second of your pained expression. “I love you, Y/n,” he caressed your arm with his hand, “but if my dad finds out we’re together, he’ll stop us from seeing each other. I’m mistreating you, we don’t see each other as often as we used to because I’m playing it safe. It’s unfair, and you deserve better.”
“Ben, I can wait. I can wait as long as I need to. It’s okay. I don’t mind, I know you’re busy,” you sat up straight, hand gripping his bicep. “I can wait.”
“I don’t want to do this, but it’s better for us to take a break.” His heart sank the moment he finished, finally looking at you. “I’ll come back. When I’m eighteen I can get a bit more freedom. Then we can start seeing each other again.”
You turned away when he looked at you, shaking your head slowly as tears fell from your eyes. You didn’t want this, but you were mature enough to know that he was right. He was in the Umbrella Academy, he has powers, and he isn’t a normal kid. He’s different and you recognized that. You just wished that things were different.
“So… until you’re eighteen, we can’t talk?”
“I didn’t say that,” Ben reassured you, keeping you close. He didn’t want to let go. He felt that if he did, then he’d lose you for good. “I’ll still come by and visit. You can come to Griddy’s Doughnuts with me and my siblings. I’m still going to be here.” He pulled you for a quick yet passionate kiss. “I’m still going to be here, I promise.”
“You better be,” you laughed off your sadness, wiping the tears off your cheeks. “Just stay until I fall asleep. You can go home after.” You closed your eyes and snuggled up to his body warmth. “I love you, Ben.”
“I love you too,” he took slow deep breaths, adjusting his posture for better comfort as he held you.
— ( ☂︎ ) —
You haven’t seen him in two weeks. Not a word from Ben. You kept your window ajar and the lock flipped up. You gave him opportunities to see you, but he hadn’t taken any of them yet. You tried to understand, but you didn’t expect any of this to happen. He promised he’d still be there, but you hadn’t seen him. The two weeks stretched out to three and three turned into four. You showed up at Griddy’s Doughnuts from time to time, and there was no sign of him. You gave up. You didn’t want to wait any longer. He left and didn’t have the heart to properly break it off so instead, he gave you false hope.
That was until October 1st rolled around. You spent the day off at home alone. Your parents were working, busy with their jobs. It was like any regular old day.
Or so you thought.
The knock from your front door bounced off the walls. This day was the last and only day that you had hopes for.
Today was the day Ben turned eighteen.
You rushed to the front door, swinging it open with a smile, “hey, Klaus! Happy birthday!” You stepped out and looked left and right. “Is Ben with you?”
“Not exactly,” Klaus rocked back and forth between his heels and toes. “Can I come in?”
“Yes, of course. Come on.” You ushered them inside, “where’s Ben?”
“Uh…” he took a seat on the couch, motioning for you to sit across from him. “It’s kind of complicated.” He took a heavy breath, scratching the back of his neck as he tried to find his words.
“Just spit it out already,” Ben said, leaning against the wall behind you.
Klaus glared at him.
“Something wrong?” You noticed his facial expression change, looking behind you before back at them.
“No, no, it’s all good. All good,” he leaned back, sighing once more. The atmosphere was dense, he kept looking back and forth between you two.
“Klaus!” Ben was getting impatient.
“Okay! Okay!” Klaus sat up straight then leaned forward, elbows resting on his knees. “Ben wanted to tell you that he’s sorry that he didn’t spend as much time with you as he promised.”
“Ben said that?” You leaned back, arms crossed over your chest. “Why couldn’t he tell me himself? Why did he send you?”
Klaus paused, mouth agape before pursing their lips. “He’s dead.”
He said that so nonchalantly that it didn’t process, “dead?” You scanned your living room, waiting for Ben to pop out from somewhere and tell you that it was some silly prank. “Funny, Klaus. Where is he?”
“No, Y/n you don’t understand.” His head fell into his hands. “Ben died on a mission two weeks ago.” He looked at the ghost that stood behind you, “and he’s sorry. He’s sorry since… y’know, he can’t be here with you. I don’t know why he’s so apologetic, it’s not his fault he died or anything.”
All of this was still too much to process. You were in shock, in heavy denial. “Ben?” You looked at Klaus as if they were a massive liar. “Like… Ben Hargreeves. He died? Two weeks ago?”
“Yeah,” they rubbed their hands together, frowning. “I’m sorry you found out this way.”
“No,” your voice instantly broke and tears spilled out of your eyes as if they were on command. You wiped the oncoming them away with the sleeves of your sweater. You tried to stop them but they kept going. The ache in your heart never stopped, it still hasn’t recovered from the last time you saw him. Hearing this news and knowing you wouldn’t see him again was heart-rending. “No, no, no. Klaus, you’re playing a sick game. You’re getting too good at this shit.” You laughed, leaning back on the couch with your sleeved hand over your eyes. “Please stop it, you little shit. This isn’t funny.”
“I’m not lying! Do you think I’d lie about something like this? My brother’s death? Y/n… it hurts me as much as it hurts you. Ben is gone.” Klaus stayed strong for you, he didn’t show signs of weakness or sorrow. They already spent all of that within the first week, they didn’t need to cry again.
“You’ve got to be fucking kidding me.” You buried your head in your hands, biting on your bottom lip to ease the pain and keep it together. “You've got to be fucking kidding me.”
Ben could see it. He could see how hard you tried to keep it in. He could hear the heartbreak in your voice and the pain in your body language. He moved from behind you to in front of you. He wanted all of this to stop, he wanted your suffering to end. Watching you lament felt like he was shot through the heart.
“I’m sorry,” Ben said, “I really am.” His voice quavered, “I wish things were different, but I did what I thought I had to do.” He reached out to touch your cheek, only for his hand to glow blue as it passed right through you. “If you could see yourself the way I do, then you’d know how much I love you. You’d know how sorry I am, you’d know how much I m-miss you.” He reached out again, but the same thing happened. “I’d do anything to hold you one last time.” He couldn’t bear to speak anymore, his voice cracked and he had to wipe the tears from his eyes. “You don’t deserve any of this.” But he kept talking. He hoped that a miracle would happen, he wanted you to hear him. “Y/n please… please, please. I love you. I love you, please I need you to know.” He reached out to pull you into an embrace, only to feel emptiness in his arms.
“Ben loves you,” Klaus said.
“I know.” You began to question your own statement. You began to question what Ben told you before he left. “Jesus Christ.” You whispered under your breath and stood up, walking right through Ben as you made your way out of the living room. “Klaus just- just leave.”
“But, Y/n—“
“Klaus leave.” Your voice was as sharp as a blade. “Don’t make me say it a third time.” You turned to them with slanted eyebrows. “Leave.”
“I’ll see you around, okay?” Klaus waved as he walked towards the exit. “I’ll see you some other day. Take care of yourself, please.”
You didn’t respond and walked to your bedroom. The second you got in there the door slammed shut. You slid down the wall and tried your hardest to control your breathing, but nothing you did could help. Your hands shook violently as a scream ripped your vocal cords.
Ben’s heart shattered. The agony behind your voice was enough to break him to pieces. He sat on the other side of the door with tear-stained cheeks. If he knew that four weeks ago would be the last time he’d hold you, he’d hold you tighter. If he knew that four weeks ago would be the last time he’d talk to you, he wouldn’t have stopped talking until the both of you were passed out. He would’ve stayed by your side until the sun rose and you opened your eyes.

Being Reginald Hargreeves's child isn't easy. Constant training, missions left and right, it all seems endless and you'd never have a normal childhood. His children have several ways of coping.
Klaus sneaks out of the house to go to teen parties where he overindulges in alcohol and pumps drugs into his veins.
Allison and Luther lock themselves up in a room where they can be alone and undisturbed. This way they can forget about their responsibilities.
Viktor plays the violin because he isn’t special. He isn’t like his siblings, he’s powerless and weak.
Diego seeks attention. Any attention that validates him as a hero is enough to feed his ego.
Ben can no longer hold a pencil or paintbrush the way he used to. All he can do is watch his loved ones suffer and get hurt. Ben’s heart was broken, knowing that he passed on his misery and misfortune to the one he loved most.

Part two? If I write it, it’s going to be a bit more angsty, no fluff, and it’s going to be shorter (hopefully). Tell me if you want to be tagged.
I may or may not already have an idea.

Ben Hargreeves was my best friend, or at least the only person I could tolerate for long periods of time within the Hargreeves family. My name is number 8, but I am not one of the 7 children Mr Hargreeves adopted. I have my own family, a mother and father who raised me, until the age of 5 when we discovered I had powers. They tried helping me control my powers for years but that did not go well, that was when they had found out about the umbrella academy, they did some research into it, and went to talk to Mr Hargreeves the adoptive father of the 7 umbrella academy kids. My parents made an agreement with Hargreaves where he would help me harness my power and control it, but I had to live in the Hargreeves household. My parents agreed and I was officially enrolled in the umbrella academy at the age of 10. I remember the first day I arrived at the academy.
Flashback:
I was met at the door by a very pretty blond woman who kindly smiled at me and led me inside after I said goodbye to my parents. I waved at them until the door closed behind me and took a deep breath. The kind woman held out her hand and I took it giving it a little shake.
"Hello dear my name is Grace," She said smiling
"H-hello" I replied shyly, pausing as she nodded encouragingly at me to continue "I'm (Y/n)" I finished.
"Well, it's lovely to meet you (y/n), Welcome to the Umbrella Academy, you can leave your bags by the door," She said letting go of my hand, she turned her back to me and started walking towards a big staircase. Meanwhile, I was frozen in place unable to take a step forward. All kinds of worries and thoughts ran through my mind. Thoughts like 'what if they don't like me', and 'what if I'm not good enough and they send me away' and more flooded my brain. Grace looked back at me to see if I was following her and I just looked at her with a frightened look on my face.
She smiled sympathetically, "Come along (y/n), I'm sure the rest of the children will adore you" She comforted me, walking back to offer me her hand to hold. I looked at it nervously before wrapping my fingers around her hand and letting her lead me upstairs. She led me to an office and entered it with me. Sitting inside behind a huge desk was Mr Hargreeves, my caretaker from now on. "Sir, (Y/n) has just been dropped off by her parents" Grace announced.
"excellent!" He said not looking up from his writings "Gather the rest of the children in the living room for a proper introduction to our newest student, I'll be down in a bit" He finished, my heart started beating faster, I wasn't ready to meet so many new people at once, I always had gotten bad anxiety with new people, ever since I was little.
"of course sir" She answered with a nod "come along (y/n) it's time for you to meet the others" She informed me softly, as if she could sense my fear, and gave my hand a gentle squeeze of reassurance. She started walking out the room and back towards the room where I had left my bags. I wouldn't let her hand go. We walked down the grand staircase and I looked at my bags still sitting by the door, I would have to get them later. She kept walking to a large living room type area, with large animal heads mounted on the walls. Large portraits of a group of kids in black domino masks hung above bookshelves and fireplaces, I assumed that was the umbrella academy. Grace stood me in front of the empty fireplace, and let go of my hand. I was about to start panicking that she was going to leave me to introduce myself to the children. However, she returned to my side almost immediately, this time with a bell in her hand. She rang the bell, and I could hear the faint thud of many footsteps from above, and I got nervous again. I quickly fumbled for Grace's hand and gripped it tightly.
"It's alright (y/n)" She said calmly, rubbing her thumb over the back of my hand soothingly. Then one by one the umbrella academy kids appeared in front of us, lining up in a straight line. They all eyed me, holding Grace's hand like my life depended on it. "Good afternoon children" She greeted cheerily, unaware of the glances the rest of the kids were throwing at me. "I'd like to introduce you all to (y/n), The newest addition to the team," she said trying to nudge me forward a little bit, but I shook my head wildly and refused to budge. She sighed and continued with the introductions. "(y/n), this is Luther" She said gesturing towards the first boy in the lineup, he had dirty blond hair and just gave me a small nod of recognition, no smile. "Diego" she continued gesturing to the second boy in the lineup, who had dark black hair and a slightly tanned complexion, he also gave me a nod of recognition, but unlike Luther, the corners of the boy's mouth turned upwards slightly in amusement. "Allison" Grace pointed towards the first girl in the lineup, who gave me a small smile, and I smiled shyly back at her. "Klaus" Grace continued, Klaus had an outright grin on his face and stepped forward taking a big bow as his name was called, flinging one hand out to the side, almost smacking the boy next to him in the face as he did. I let out a small giggle, and he stepped back into line satisfied that he was able to make me chuckle "Five" The boy next to him rolled his eyes, at Klaus, and gave me a smile as his name was called. "Ben" The small Asian boy barely looked up from his feet as he waved at me, and I waved back with a small smile. "and finally Vanya" Grace said as the last girl in the line smiled widely at me, and I could tell how overjoyed she was to have someone new in the house. "I expect you will all treat our new guest with kindness and respect," She said giving a stern look to each kid in the lineup.
"Yes mother" They all replied in unison, except for Klaus who answered a few seconds late
"Alright, your father said he would come down for introductions, but I suppose he's a bit busy at the moment. So you are all dismissed" She smiled at the children once more, before allowing them to disperse. I allowed her to detach her hand from mine, and she wandered off away from the living room. The other children gave me one final glance before dispersing to different corners of the house. Everyone left except for two kids Klaus and Ben...
"Well hello there (y/n)" He said slinging an arm around Ben's shoulder, leaving Ben no choice but to walk with Klaus towards me. "welcome to our messed up family" Klaus continued over enthusiastically as he and Ben stopped in front of me. Ben shot me an apologetic look before rolling his eyes at Klaus. Then I let out my first real laugh since being in the house.
"Shall we get your bags, and escort you to your room?" Klaus said bowing deeply after removing his arm from around Ben's shoulder.
"Why thank you, kind sir," I said playing along with Klaus giving him an overdone curtsy. His eyes lit up as I played along with his Joke. He offered me his arm and I looped my arm through it. as he led me towards where I had left my bags, a sighing Ben trailing along behind us.
End Flashback:
I chuckled to myself as I recalled the memory of when I had first met the other kids. That was about 5 or 6 years ago, I'm 16 now along with all of the other kids. Five disappeared around 3 years ago, Vanya hasn't been the same since he left. He was one of the few who was nice to her, besides me of course. I was soon pulled out of my thoughts by a quiet knock on the door. I already knew who it was.
"Come in," I said sitting up on my bed, as Ben opened the door and stuck his head inside. "How was the mission?" I asked smiling with my arms open wide. He rolled his eyes and crossed the room stepping into my open arms. I wrapped my arms around him and rested my head against his stomach.
"It was alright, we succeeded, although it was harder without you, we had to improvise on the stuff you normally would have handled," He said running his fingers through my hair, smiling down at me. "How much longer till you can come on missions again?" He asked, you see I had fallen down one of the many staircases in the house while rushing to get ready for a mission, and ended up with a broken leg. Mr Hargreeves was very upset about that as it meant I couldn't participate on missions till it was healed.
"A few weeks or so" I answered breathing in his scent content. You see Ben and I were a 'thing' but not officially a 'thing'. Like we knew about each other's feelings and acknowledged them but didn't make our 'relationship', if you can even call it one, official as we both knew Mr Hargreeves would disapprove of it. But Ben and I were content to stay this way.
"Hey (y/n)?" Ben said as he ran his hands through my hair again soothingly.
"Hmm?" I hummed my response, closing my eyes
"How much do you love me?" He asked and I could practically hear the smirking smile in his voice. My head shot up and I looked up at him. I tried to pretend I was mad at him for asking the question but I ended up smiling instead. I thought for a moment thinking up an answer that was sure to get on his nerves.
"From here" I stated simply, smiling at him.
"From here?" He asked, confused. "From here to where?" He asked with another smile.
I simply shook my head and said again "From here" Before burrowing my head in his stomach.
"I don't get it" He pouted a little.
"you will eventually" I replied with a soft chuckle.
"okay Love" he accepted my answer most likely knowing he wouldn't get anything else from me.
A few years later
I couldn't believe it, he was actually gone. The man I loved was actually gone. I couldn't believe it, but I was forced to accept it when they lowered his casket into the ground. I had been crying for a few weeks straight now, and after the funeral, I cried for a few more weeks. I was broken, Ben was the only thing I had ever loved, and the only person who made me feel like I deserved to be loved. I rarely left my room and when I did leave, Klaus didn't leave my side, he said he was acting on Ben's orders. I knew Klaus could probably summon Ben so I could see him again but I told him not to, no matter how many times he offered to. I knew that if I saw him, Klaus wouldn't be able to summon Ben for long, and once our time was up, he would be ripped from my arms again, and I wouldn't be able to handle that. Instead, I visited Ben's grave every week, every Friday. Today was no different, I exited my room and found myself immediately met with Klaus attaching himself to my hip. He knew the routine, I went through every Friday, and always willingly walked with me. We passed the playground and glanced at the children giggling while swinging on the swing set. We walked through the park until we reached the entrance to the graveyard. I saw Klaus tense up. No matter how many times I insisted he didn't have to come with me, he insisted twice as many that he did. So I linked my arm through his and he took a deep breath, while I led him to Ben's grave. I kept throwing glances at him whenever I saw his head dart in a different direction, worried. Soon we arrived at Ben's grave, thankfully it was a little separated from the rest of the graves, so Klaus wouldn't be surrounded by as many ghosts. He walked a little ways away from Ben's grave to give me some privacy, and the second he left my side I dropped to my knees and cried. I cried for a few minutes, before inhaling deeply and wiping my tears. I sniffled as I vaguely remembered a conversation we had before he died.
Semi-flashback (just a repeat from above):
End flashback
I sniffled as I recalled the conversation, realizing he never got the rest of his answer. I decided I would give it to him now, even if he wasn't nearby. I reached out to gingerly tough the gravestone in front of me.
"T-to h-here," I said my voice cracking as I stumbled over my words. "That's how much I love you Ben" I finished as my shoulders shook with sobs. --Fin--

“aren’t you a cutie?” ✧
Tumblr media
pairing: sparrow!ben x umbrella!reader
warnings: drunk reader. swearing. fem reader. very slightly suggestive content. fluff? comfort? idk. oh also bens kinda a dick..
summary: the sparrows weren't even that bad… including one familiar face that you longed to see.
a/n: basically you're drunk, you hang w the sparrows. thats it. alsooo first time writing for ben i hope this is fine!! <3
wc: <1K
requests are currently open!!
Tumblr media
everyone was arguing about the sparrows back at home. you and luther agreed they weren’t half bad… but majority wins, right? anyway, while luther stood home and obeyed the majority's wishes to not interact with the sparrows you were busy sneaking out. you couldn’t get there sober though so you grabbed a bottle of vodka. you just drank and drank. intoxicated you was a lot more bold than sober you and you really needed this push.
you knew the conflict that would start if your siblings found out where you were right now, but you couldn’t help it. you held the bottle in your right hand and you knocked with your left. the door swung open immediately as fei had one of her crows watching you.
“oh shit,” fei laughed, she smelled the scent of the alcohol off of you, jayme stood by her side.
“what do you want, pretty girl,” jayme scoffed.
“you guys are pret-ty… cool…” you cut yourself short not even knowing what to say next.
a familiar face parted the two girls. a wonky smile immediately grew on your whole face. you basically collapsed on him and you grabbed onto his shoulder for some support.
“ben!”
he groaned and made an annoyed face as he pushed you off of him.
“oh ben i missed you so freaking much,” your eyes began to water.
“the fuck,” he pushed you off of him.
he still remained careful with you. his hands holding onto your shoulders to maintain your balance.
“oh god why is she crying,” fei sighed.
“let's just get the chick inside,” jayme flipped her hair as she started walking to the liquor cabinet, “well i mean why not all of us get drunk? this ‘family,’ drama is stupid.”
you quickly moved through ben and followed after them with a smile. the click clacks of your heels swallowed the hall and you tried your best to remain upright.
it didn't take too long for the rest of the sparrows to gather together, and it took an even shorter amount of time for everyone to go through several bottles. ben was lame though and refused to indulge in any of the fun. but you didn't care! all of you were having fun and if he wanted to be boring… well, whatever.
as night grew upon you guys everyone had left one by one to go to bed. each with their own excuse- but not you! the only reason you kept on drinking was because this was literally your only way of coping. end of the world, majority of your family has gotten fucking annoying.. ben was the only one who hadn’t left.
“ben…”
“what,” he looked over at you from the other couch right in front of you.
“i’ve got some..thing to tell ya,” you said as you pouted and drank a little bit more.
“what is it?” he had an unamused look on his face.
“you know you are really..,” your sentence was interrupted by a gag.
your eyes winded and you felt all those gallons of liquor coming up.
luckily, while you were busy going on and on with the sparrows, ben managed to grab a bucket… just in case… he handed it to you as you threw up your guts. ben stood beside you and held your hair back. once you finished throwing up, not even half of what you had drunk today, you turned your head over to ben.
“what i was trying to say is,” you smiled, “you’re not all that bad like you pretend you are..”
“oh shut up.”
it didn't take long till your head was back in that bucket.
ben was thinking about what you said as the room echoed with blegghh and blech sounds.
“did she really mean that,” he thought to himself. in his mind he thought everyone was incapable of even thinking he's a good person. but then again, maybe it was just the alcohol talking… right?
soon enough you’d been reaching for another bottle.
“hey hey hey,” he carefully grabbed it out of your hand, “i think you’ve had enough for one day.”
ben placed the bottle on the ground.
“buttt ben pleaseee, just onnnee more sip,” you pleaded.
“no, y/n,” he grabbed you, bridal style, “what you need is some sleep.”
“aren’t you a cutie,” you winked and booped his nose.
he rolled his eyes in response and you let out a laugh.
he laid you down on the bed and tucked you in.
“well.. goodnight.”
as he headed to the door to shut the light off and exit you stopped him.
“ben pleaseee don’t go,” you frowned.
he turned around, interested in what you had to say next.
“look, you aren’t my ben… but i really- like reallyreallyreally missed you.. can’t you just stay pleaseee!”
he facepalmed, “y/n no. this was even pushing it for me,” his hands left his face to turn back around and open the door.
“waitwaitwaitwait noo!! ben!! look.. you have been gone for like billions of years ‘nd i missed youuuu!!! you aren’t actually him but thats okay.. i like you! you are such a freakin softie,” you smiled and giggled, “just because you aren’t my ben doesn’t mean i can’t like new ben, lay down please. i like you a lot a lot a lot.. i missssed you!”
he took a moment and let your words sink in. you… liked him? you two had only just met but wow. he felt a warmth in his heart. his mind was racing with thoughts.. with emotions. did you really like him? are you just nice?
“okay fine. you owe me, okay?”
“yayyyy!!! thank you ben, i do owe you! whatever you want,” you winked.
he laid down next to you and turned facing the other way.
“oh cmon now benn don’t be such a lame-ass,” you tugged on his shoulder.
he groaned and turned over, “you seriously owe me big time for this one.”
“thats fine,” you smiled and shut your eyes.
as you fell asleep you had an arm wrapped around ben. his thoughts wandered but he always came back to the same subject… you. it really fucked with his head hearing the umbrella academy saying they didn’t like “new ben.” how the fuck was he supposed to know what “old ben was like”? you had soothed his thoughts though… knowing that at least one person liked him helped him sleep that night.

Carousel Club | Five Hargreeves / Reader
Tumblr media
Word Count : 3k Summary : After being dropped into 1963, you find work at the Carousel Club as a dancer. While following a tip where Luther could be, Five sees your routine. Overwhelmed by jealousy he sneaks into your dressing room. (I do not own the umbrella academy or any of it's characters.) Warnings/Tags : Smut, cursing, piv, men being sexist (its the 1960s what do you expect?) dom!Five, Aged up!Five. A little bit of angst. Not requested.
You always trusted your husband. He was your constant in a very fucked up world. You knew he would never purposely harm you, or put you in harm's way. Sometimes that meant following him through time and space, other times it meant trusting him to not burn your dinner. So when he said he had a way out of the mess you and your in-laws had caused, of course you trusted him wholeheartedly.
You grasped Five’s hand tightly in your own, feeling a sense of deja-vu from the last time you two tried to spacial jump. Diego gingerly held your other hand, you looked up at him giving him a curt nod. He returned the nod before looking around at the rest of his siblings. You raised your eyes to the gaping hole in the ceiling, the intricate details of the theater framing the crumbling moon. Five squeezed your hand, drawing your attention back to him. You gave him a reassuring smile, well as reassuring as you could.
Electricity crackled around the seven of you, wind whipping your hair in front of your face. Five’s grip on your hand was almost crushing, like you were his lifeline. A giant blue orb of energy appeared above your family, growing and glowing. Five strained under the pressure, his face contorting into a pained expression. The blue light enveloped you all, flickering and pulsing.
“Hold on! It’s gonna get messy!” Five yelled as the ground shook beneath you, shutting your eyes tightly you felt yourself being pulled away from Five and Diego. You only had a moment of panic before you were thrown to the ground.
You groaned sitting up, the blue light of energy blinding you. You raised your hand shielding your eyes.
“Five!” You yelled as you got to your feet. As fleeting as the orb had appeared it disappeared, as though someone had turned an old tv off. Was that a flash, or just your imagination? You shook your head, taking in your surroundings. No Five, no siblings, no briefcase. Where the hell were you?
You wandered down the alleyway to the main street. Your hip twinged in pain after taking the brunt of your fall. You looked around the street, the lampposts and storefront neon signs were your only light source. You sank down on a bench, letting out a deep sigh. Your eyes wandered to a newsrack, you quickly got to your feet. You ran to it, holding the sides of the glass case.
August 1st, 1963. Dallas, Texas.
Your heart leapt into your throat. Damn it, Five. Shit, Alison. God, where were the rest of Five’s siblings?
“Honey, are you alright?” A soft voice asked, you turned your head sharply. You were met by a sweet woman’s face, big blond hair and bangs. She had a cardigan wrapped tightly around herself as she reached out to touch your shoulder. You shook your head, still coming to terms with the last five minutes. “Come on, I’m just about to go get something to eat, why don’t you join me?” She said, smiling sweetly.
“I-” You cleared your throat, “I don’t have any money.” You said, shaking your head. “Well then my treat.” She said helping you to your feet. You followed the woman down the streets of Dallas to a quaint diner. You sat down across from her, taking a look over the menu. People chattered mindlessly around you as you came to terms with your situation.
“I’ve seen that look before.” She said, setting her menu down on the table.
“What look?” You said furrowing your eyebrows.
“That look. Every girl I work with has had that same look.” She huffed thanking the waiter as he set down a coffee cup in front of her. “Small girl in the big city, not knowing where you’re gonna stay or what you’re gonna eat. Believe me, I’ve seen that look before because I’ve felt that before.” She said reaching across the table, taking your hand in hers. “So what’s your story, sweetheart?” You took a breath, choosing your next words carefully.
“My husband and I got separated.” You whispered, “My parents didn’t agree with our marriage and so we ran away. He was supposed to meet me here in Dallas but he didn’t show.” You said, not technically a lie, Five was supposed to be here with you.
“Oh dear,” She tsked, “well you do not have to worry about that anymore. I’m so glad I found you! You can stay with me until you get back on your feet.” You smiled, hopefully Five wouldn’t make you wait much longer.
“Thank you…” You trailed off, realizing you hadn’t caught her name.
“Autumn.” She answered, holding out her hand for you to shake.
“I’m Y/n.” You smiled, taking her hand.
“You know Y/n, I could put in a good word for you with my boss. He may seem a bit rough around the edges, but we’re always short staffed.” She shrugged. Whatever the job was you would only have it for hopefully a week tops before Five caught up with you, along with his siblings.
“I appreciate it Autumn.” You smiled, patting her hand.
-
When you arrived at Autumn's place of work you wondered if you were a little over your head. You followed Autumn into the back entrance of the nightclub. You passed by many half dressed women, putting on their makeup and outfits.
“This way sweetheart!” Autumn called, you picked up your pace following her through the dressing room. Once on the main floor of the club you were greeted by the intense smell of cigars. Autumn had all but disappeared, you wandered through the tables. Trying to work your way to the front of the club, while also trying to avoid the men’s wandering hands at the tables.
“Y/n!” She called from a table, you turned your head. The club was familiar, but you couldn’t put your finger on it. You were face to face with Jack Ruby, the man who would put the hit out on Lee Harvey Oswald. You gulped, straightening your shoulders you walked over to them.
“Mr. Ruby, this is Y/n she’s looking for a job.” Autumn said, clasping her hands together. Jack looked you over, a cigar dangling from his lips.
“Y/n who?” He said leaning back in his chair. You stuttered but only for a second.
“Y/n L/n,” You said with a smile, Hargreeves might get Five or your in-laws in trouble if anyone here caught wind of that name. He puffed his cigar, leaning over to whisper something to the man next to him. He chuckled before nodding, you bit your cheek. Feeling like a piece of meat in front of these men.
“Can you start tonight?” He said, lacing his fingers together.
“Of course.” You replied, Autumn cheered quietly beside Mr. Ruby.
“Autumn, be a dear and show her the dressing rooms. Tell ‘em I want Miss Y/n to be on stage by tomorrow night.” He said motioning with his cigar in hand. On stage? You turned sharply looking toward the stage of the nightclub, scantily clad women fanning themselves with large feather fans.
“Yes sir Mr. Ruby!” Autumn giggled, taking your arm and walking you towards the back.
-
You sat in front of your vanity, lined by bright golden bulbs. Brushing glitter onto your eyes before adding your long eyelashes. It had been three months since you had taken on your new job, along the way you had made many friends. You felt for all the girls alongside you, it was a rough profession but it paid well. You pulled your robe close around your body, walking over to the clothing rack. You rifled through the sheer jeweled fabric before your eyes landed on the black and white body suit. You threw your outfit over your arm heading back to your vanity. You were greeted by a beautiful bouquet of red roses, Autumn standing next to them with a coy smile.
“Autumn! Who are these from?”
“A secret admirer,” she cooed her bright red lips pulling back into a smile, “Just teasing! It’s from all of us girls here,” She said as she rushed forward, wrapping her arms around your shoulders. Her cheap perfume floods your senses along with her sweet sweat.
“Y’all didn’t have to do that!” You smiled as she pulled away, she only waved you off.
“You’re one of the best here! Don’t know where you learned all your little tricks.” She said bumping your elbow with her own. She looked down at your costume in your arms. “Need help?” Autumn asked, holding out her hand.
“Yes please.” You said handing her your suit as you lowered your robe. You held onto her shoulders stepping into the suit, you adjusted your straps as Autumn tightened your corset. You admired yourself in the mirror, since taking on your new job you had become more toned. More than when you had worked at the commission, and these clothes were definitely more flattering than your blue suits you used to wear. You took in a sharp breath as Autumn pulled through the last loops, tying the ribbon with a neat bow.
“Alright sister, you’re ready.” She said squeezing your shoulders.
“Thanks Autumn, now go take your break!” You said waving her off.
“Y/n! You’re on next!” Shannon called from the stage door. You nodded, quickly stopping to smell the sweet scent of your roses before grabbing your tulle skirt. You tied it around your waist as you walked backstage. You picked up your red feather fans, taking a deep breath. You walked up to the closed red curtains listening to the deafening cheers and whistles. You heard the clink of the ropes being pulled back before you were blinded by the spotlights. You closed your eyes, bowing your head, your body covered by the bright red fans.
You started your routine, swaying your hips seductively as you pulled the fans back away from your body teasing the audience. You lost yourself in the music, thankfully it was difficult to decipher anyone’s face over the shadows cast by the spotlights. You unclipped the tulle skirt, throwing it off stage. You could make out a certain group of sailors, and a rather large man standing by the bar.
You teased the audience, covering your body with the fans before flashing them a glimpse of your shimmering body suit. You pulled the fans over your head, rotating your hips in a circular motion as you lowered into a squat. You bounced on your heels before jumping back up to your feet. You smirked as the men whistled and cheered.
The music slowed, and faded out as you walked behind the red curtain. You dropped off your fans before heading back to your dressing room. You opened the door, shutting it behind you.
“Who sent the roses?” Five’s voice sent a shiver down your spine. You turned your head sharply, meeting Five’s predatory gaze.
“Five!” You gasped, your heart soaring in your chest. “When did you get here?”
“I could ask you the same thing.” He said, crossing his arms. Your smile fell off your face, what was his problem? It’s not your fault that he dropped you off in the middle of 1963 with no resources.
“Three months ago.” You said furrowing your brows, “I’ve been looking for you this whole time!” He scoffed, clicking his tongue.
“Oh really? It looks like you’ve been getting enough attention without me.” He huffed, glaring at the bouquet of roses.
“Excuse me for finding a way to survive here.” You spit pushing past him, knocking his shoulder against yours. You took a seat in front of your vanity, pulling out your makeup kit. He stalked up behind you, towering over you. He gripped your chin, forcing you to look at him through the mirror, effectively smearing your bright red lipstick.
“You’re mine.” He sneered, his lips pulling back over his teeth. You flushed, heat pooling in your core. You stared up at him through the mirror, his fingers squeezing your lips together. “Got it?” He asked. You glared at him, a devilish thought entering your mind.
You kept quiet, smirking as you watched a shadow pass over his features. He clenched his jaw, shaking his head as he tilted your head to look him in the eye.
“You must need a lesson.” He smirked, pulling you to your feet, you stumbled slightly in your heels. He kicked the chair away, you jumped as it thudded against the carpeted floor. His arm moved behind you, sweeping everything off of your vanity along with the roses. They crashed to the floor, the vase shattering. He pushed you against the vanity, caging you in with his arms as he slammed his hands against the mirror. He stared down at you with a wolfish grin, you felt yourself flush. Your heart started to beat faster as you squirmed under him.
“Yes sir.” You said tilting your chin up, staring at him through your lashes. He growled spinning you around, your hands splayed out in front of you on the top of the vanity. His hand connected to your ass cheek, letting out a low chuckle as you gasped. He moved your hair off of your back, his cold fingers attacking the strings of your corset.
“Stupid- fucking- ribbon-“ he said through gritted teeth, you caught the slightly crazed look in his eye through the reflection. Your body felt on fire, three months without him made every touch that more exhilarating. As soon as the corset was loose enough he was ripping it off of your body, along with your panties. You were entirely bare in front of your fully dressed husband. He stepped back, loosening his tie as he watched you squirm in the mirror.
“Not so confident now, dearest.” He smirked, unbuttoning the top button of his dress shirt. You breathed hard, adrenaline rushing through your veins. Your nipples hardened against the cold air in the dressing room. You heard the familiar metal on metal as he took off his belt before unzipping his pants. He walked up behind you, nosing his dick against your folds. You clenched around nothing, pushing back against him. His hand came up to the back of your skull, wrapping his fist through your hair. He stared at you through his darkened gaze, you were breathless, your lips parting slightly.
“Please,” you whined, batting your eyelashes. He forcibly thrusted all the way in, knocking the breath out of your lungs. You let out a pornagraphic moan before you covered your mouth with your hand. He grabbed your hand, pulling it away from your mouth and holding it behind your back.
“Why don’t you let everyone here know who you belong to?” He huffed in your ear, thrusting erratically into you. You gripped the desk, the only thing holding you up as Five plowed into you. “Let them know that I’m the only one who gets to fuck you like this.” You clenched around him as his words seemed to straight directly to your core. He let out a groan, loosening his grip on your hair. “Fuck you like this don’t you?” You nodded enthusiastically, your eyes rolling back into your head as his cock prodded against your g-spot.
“Yes, yes Five!” You babbled tears pricking your eyes, as he bent you over the desk. His hands flew to your hips, pulling them against his own thrusts. You could only lay there as your orgasm came crashing down. You were thankful you were on top of the vanity because there was no way your trembling legs would have been able to hold you up.
Five’s eyebrows knit together as he arched his neck back, his hips stuttering as his orgasm quickly followed yours. Cumming with a loud shout he collapsed on top of you, your sweat causing his thin shirt to stick to your skin. He pulsed inside of you as he gingerly tucked a piece of hair behind your ear. He pulled away, peeling himself off of you. He kissed your shoulder as his softened cock slipped out of you. Your breathing was slowly coming back to normal as he tried to return your room to the state it was before he had destroyed it and you. He picked up your robe draping it over your shoulders. You sat up, feeling his cum start to drip down your thighs.
“What took you so long?” You asked, tying your robe close around your naked body.
“I just got here.” He sighed, tucking himself back into his pants. “I’m sorry I made you wait.” He turned to you, brushing his thumb over your cheek.
“I’ll always wait for you.” You sighed, wrapping your arms around his waist. He held you against his chest, resting his cheek against yours.
“At least someone will, Luther and Diego weren’t too happy about me dumping them in the past.” Five sighed. Diego and Luther were here, too?
“Where are they?” You asked, turning to Five with wide eyes. Five looked at you inquisitively, a small smile pulling on the corner of his mouth.
“Luther works for Jack Ruby, y/n. I found him in this club before I knew you worked here.” Your stomach dropped. Luther worked for Jack Ruby? That means he must have seen your numbers.
“Oh god.” You said mortified, hanging your head against Five’s chest. He chuckled, shaking his head as he lightly rubbed your back.
“Believe me, he was just as mortified as you are.” He said, “Although I must say I thoroughly enjoyed your routine.” He lowered his voice, his hands trailing down your body to rest on your butt.
“I think I could give you a private showing.” You smirked, wrapping your hand around his tie. You pulled him forward by his tie, smashing your lips against his. His hands gripped your hips, the velvety fabric smooth against his palms.
“God I’d love that,” He let out a sigh, “but maybe we should wait until after we save the world.”
Again? It was happening again?
“Vanya?” You asked, pulling away.
“Your guess is as good as mine.” He shrugged, “All I know is on November 25th the world ends, again.”
“Guess it’s time for a family reunion.”

Simp For You
Tumblr media
Five x (f)Reader
Genre: Angst + Fluff
Requested by: @imherefortea (birthday request)
Summary: Perhaps she had read one too many novels and classics, while romance was not part of the agenda, a hero was, one that would bring her a bouquet every morning, sing to her every night and love her for eternity. Emotions and love were mere signs of weakness, or at least qualities upheld by fools- Five Hargeeves was no fool, both logic and rationality were his tools, yet, for her, neither functioned properly. Yet, neither were willing to let up their beliefs nor were the two willing to let up on one another.
Word Count: 6k+
The thing with feelings and emotional representation were not attributes Five was against, but he felt the need not to express them to or for anyone. Especially since he had decided to travel back in time to proceed with saving the world- the only addition to his plan was Y/N, someone he had met back at the commission.
Although their first encounter was not when he had noticed her, in fact, he pretty much ignored her- not intentionally, but because she was part of the insignificant, someone who was just supposed to correct the timeline and hand him the files- do all his paperwork.
On the other hand, Y/N was unable to 'ignore' him, for the encounter that he considered as their first meeting was not their first meeting for her actually. In fact, before him being introduced to Y/N by the Handler, the girl had been saved by him a few days back, as such;
Today had been a shitty day at the commission, more paperwork, more mistakes to correct, more bad coffee- ew just ew, her entire day was ew. Not the best choice of adjectives but it was true, to top it all off, as she was walking to her residence -a cozy little apartment a few miles away from the Commission building- it began to rain. No, mother nature had perhaps tipped a bucket load of ice-cold water on her. Maybe it was the screams of the falling droplets or her blurred vision, but she was unable to hear the blaring horns of the bus driving right at her as she crossed the street. Much like every animal, she remembers freezing and staring at the bright white lights waiting for the angel of death to pull out her soul before the immense pain could hit her system. Fortunately for her, a second before she made contact with the metallic giant a flash of blue blinded her, after which she felt like she was being spun at unimaginable speed.
"You okay?" Her eyes snapped open at the stranger's -good-looking stranger's- voice. She could sense an undertone of concern in his question, though his expressions showed more anger than concern of any kind. Perhaps because she was still in his arms and had shown no signs of moving.
"I- Uh-"
"I don't have time for this." he sighed before setting her down, patting his coat and looking around, "Try to look both ways while crossing the road, and oh- the pavement is used by pedestrians, not the damn road." with that and a flash of blue he was gone, leaving an everlasting impression on her. This was technically how they had met, not that he remembered, she believed he just needed her to remind him, he was a clever man after all.
Unfortunately, even after THREE YEARS of working with the dunce he had not even batted an eyelash at her, let alone have a whole ass conversation. No hint, no comment, no compliment, nothing had made him even glance up at her from the paperwork she handed him before every mission. By the end of the third year, she had practically given up, he was no knight in shining armor sent to pull her away from her mundane life, he was not her Zorro or Hercules- three years of simping after a man who probably doesn't know her name gone down the drain, what a waste.
Perhaps that was what fate was waiting for all along, for her to stop trying. 31st December, New Year's Eve, a night where everyone gathers around, parties hard, does questionable things in the name of celebration, and often wakes up hungover the next day- starting the new year right. Y/N however, was never made for such loud parties or rowdy crowds because they were annoying and just stupid and she had no one to share her new year's kiss with- there it's been said, and honestly as pathetic as it may sound, it was the truth, the haunting thought that would linger at the back of her mind, but on occasions like these, it would come prancing forward to knock on her door every few hours.
Metaphorically speaking, or so she thought because when there was an actual knock on the door, she glanced at the clock, 10.59 PM- she wondered if she had attracted a murderer to her apartment. Placing the bowl of raw cookie dough on the coffee table and pausing a rerun of her favorite sitcom she pulled on her cardigan, shivering at the cold air that her blanket had been protecting her from for the past few hours.
Opening the door she came face to face with what an author could describe as the most 'annoyed' face in the world. Five Hargreeves in the flesh, standing there in all his suit-cladded glory, frowning at her, eyes boring a form of annoyance that could scare off just about anyone, but she wasn't just anyone. She was his filer, his desk worker, his partner- which was exactly why when he found a mistake in the file she had left at her desk for him, he decided to go ask the slacker if she would prefer to quit herself or have him report her to the Handler.
"Mind explaining this?" he slams the file in her chest, as she caught with an uff, "Thought you were better than the rest of the slackers," huffing he stuffed his hands in his pockets, before looking around at the apartment's door frame then the corridor then peaking over her head as she read the file, into her apartment- simpleton. He thought to himself before glancing back at her, watching her mumble to herself as she read each line, her eyebrows knitted together as she licked her bottom lip, a habit of hers, something she'd do when she was concentrating. The first time he had noticed it, he had thought she was flirting with him, much like the many other desk freaks did, which led him to turn even colder to her, only to realize after a while that this was a habit, rather than an antic to get into his pants. Nonetheless, he was still irritated by her carelessness-
"Umm...Mr.Hargreeves."
"What?"
"Where did you get this file from?" She asked, totally confused.
"From your desk. You left it for me there-"
"No...I didn't, you had no missions for today and...I took an off today, did you not...notice?" she trailed off at the end with a defeated sigh, handing the file back to him, and giving him a tight-lipped smile.
"Why would I notice that- who put it on your desk then?"
"Probably the person who wrote it." sighing, arms crossed she leaned against the doorframe.
"What-"
"Not that you noticed the change in writing style either, this was written by Beatrice." She motioned towards the file, "It's in a faded beige file and it's typed in black ink. I type in blue ink and use black files or envelopes unless we're sending it to you through the pipes. My guess is she had a date with her field agent, considering he does know she exists and thought of putting it on my desk, knowing you'd probably pick it up and the train engineer is supposed to have a heart attack before the express mail train slams into the other upcoming one, he doesn't fall asleep. If I'm correct you or well Brian- Beatrice's field agent was supposed to induce a heart attack, enabling the tragedy of Ogden, Utah to occur."
"Oh." was all he could manage to say.
"Indeed, Oh." with that she straightened up and nodded at him, "Happy New Year, Mr.Hargreeves." before closing the door, only to be stopped by his hand as he pushed it open.
"Wait, but what about- you need to come to the Commission and file this correctly."
"What? No, are you kidding me?"
"Clearly, I am not, the timeline is important-"
"Not really, time is irrelevant here." She shrugged, "And anyway, it's her file, her fault, just slap it back on her desk and-"
"I'm not asking, I'm telling ya!" He snapped at her, causing her to flinch, biting her lip to hold back the rush of emotions, she had never imagined him using such a tone with her, let alone yelling at her. She took a small step back, shaking her head slightly, staring at the floor, the angelic, god-like image of him shattering in her mind. Not only did he not recognize her work, but also thought she'd make such a mistake, and he had the nerve to come up to her apartment and yell at her.
"What is the matter with you?" he groaned, checking his wrist watch, "We don't have much time-"
"What's my name?" she muttered, catching him off guard.
"What?"
"I said, do you know my name?" she asked, tears threatening to fall at any given moment as she glared at him through glassy eyes.
"What is the point of that question, of course, I know your name, it's -" he paused, thinking to himself before shaking his head at something and blinking away with a flash.
Sighing in defeat she finally closed the door and went back to her couch, wrapping herself in the warm, heavy blanket. Three years of working together, of writing his reports for and after the mission, adding a small 'tips' section and sometimes maps of areas he could rest or eat at just because she thought that's what a good partner would do- three years of time wasted on a partner who didn't even bother learning her name.
Jolting awake at the sound of something falling followed by a hiss she fought off the blanket that had somehow put her in a chokehold. Finally managing to push it off she gasped for air, only to lock eyes with forest green hues, emitting a, "WHAT THE F***"
"Happy New Year to you too."
"WHY ARE YOU HERE- DID YOU EAT ALL THE COOKIE DOUGH?"
"Well, I came to tell you I had to file the report myself, no thanks to your stubborn ass and complained about Barbra or whatever."
"What-"
"Also, Y/N, what kind of fool do you take me for?" He asked, sitting crossed as he side-eyed her while watching TV.
Frowning at his question she scooted further into the corner of the couch, "So ya read my name of the file-"
"No you desk worm. I've known your name since day one." He sighed, turning to look at her cocooned form, feeling somewhat guilty as trailed off, "Just didn't realize how useful those tips were."
Her ears perked up at that little compliment, instantly threw off the blankets, and stood on the cold floor, hands resting on her hips as she let out a smug huff, "Well then, guess we learned something today, didn't we?"
"That you're a lonely worm? I already knew that though."
"You can be mean sometimes Mr.Hargreeves," she muttered looking at the screen and then at the clock, it was an hour past midnight, what a way to start the new year.
"Anyway." Getting up he patted the invisible dirt of his clothes, "I'll see you at work tomorrow, and I prefer if you call Five. Mr.Hargreeves makes you sound like a gold digger." Before she could react he blinked away, sowing the seed of a relationship that was soon going to blossom into a full-blown field.
The best thing to come out of that weird night was that much to everyone's amazement, Five had begun to warm up to his  'desk worm'. More importantly, he would sit at her desk after missions, as she wrote the report. Usually, he'd be drinking his coffee, watching her type, pitching in a few details from time to time, and earning a comment from her. Many, including the Handler, had tried to eavesdrop on their conversations, for getting Five Hargreeves to say or talk in any decent manner was next to impossible.
Herb had forgotten his wallet at work, so decided to head back to the Commission. Naturally, he had expected the place to be empty, minus the security guards, but was amazed to enter the workplace to find Y/N laughing at a Five who seemed to have been glaring at her, face flushed. So, like any nosy little office worker, he hid behind the wall to listen to them.
"I did not save you."
"Yes! You did! I can't believe you didn't remember me!"
"Why didn't you tell me then?"
"It's embarrassing."
"Well, they do say never meet your heroes."
"They're right, I thought I was miserable. No, Five Hargreeves has it worse."
"Welp, that's the last time I will converse with you."
Herb heard a chair screech followed by her laughter, causing him to panic.
"Wait! A gentleman is supposed to drop the fine lady home!" She said grabbing her purse and linking her arm with the taller man, looking up at him with those shiny expectant eyes, earning an eye roll from him, though he didn't pull away.
The two walked out of the office, passing by SMALL GUY who was hiding behind a file cabinet, bickering about tomorrow's mission and other useless topics one could think of.
Y/N didn't care how long it was taking to peel off each layer or break down every wall he had built around him, she was just glad that he was letting her to do it. Five on the other hand was extremely conflicted, on one hand, he had his own plan and on the other his heart had begun to slowly blossom every time he was near her or thought of her. When he joined the Commission he had planned on going solo for the long run, no friends meant no liabilities and no lover meant no weakness- or so he thought.
If it wasn't her obnoxious laughter that would get his heart racing, it was the unasked-for, but somewhat welcomed, touches. From the way her fingers would brush against his while handing him a file to the night she held his hand to comfort him when he had 'accidentally' ended up telling her about how much he missed his family. That cursed night at her apartment had his brain ready to fight his heart-forcing him to spend the entire night awake in the guestroom.
Regardless, he had always been a firm believer in "You may not be able to control your emotions, but you can control your actions." That is until she turned 29, well, technically it wasn't her age that had affected his policy but her simple invitation to a bar for some "birthday drinks", sure did a number on his rationality. All he remembered from the merry little event was the low-cut dress that she had chosen to adorn that night and that they may have had a drink too many, cause after she purred out his name, he blacked out. The next morning he woke up with a massive headache and her next to him.
Not the way he had ever assumed he'd start a relationship this way, but then again he had never thought he'd be in one in the first place.
The first thing he had to learn while being with her was that they were very different. He was blunt, rude, and straight-up obnoxious (words of other people, not his), she was polite, considerate, and to some extent a bit too nice. Another thing about her that he had to embrace was the difference in love languages; he would consider small gestures, like making her coffee or arranging her files at her desk- barely anything physical. Y/N on the other hand loved physical affection, from cuddling to holding hands to just sitting next to him, close enough for their shoulders to touch. At first, it would bother him, the lack of human contact for all those years had him irritated by the thought of love. To some extent he had assumed that this was a tactic to assert dominance, a routine conducted by the Handler- but over time he had realized how her actions were genuine and filled with love.
Love, she loved him, and to his surprise when the first time the words 'I love you', had been uttered to him, he had instantly responded with 'But I can't love you.' leaving them both standing there in the middle of her apartment, staring at each other.
"Oh-"
"Wait, I - Y/N it's not like that, I-"
"It's okay Five- I mean it's not okay okay but I- " she paused, vision turning blurry before sniffing to hold back her emotions.
He reached out to touch her only for her to take a step back, "Y-you can go if you want, I'll clean up myself-"
"That's not what I meant." His voice held a certain edge to it as he watched her clean up the place where they had been watching a movie- the movie now forgotten. He was pissed, more at himself than her, it's not like he had asked her out, she did and he had other plans too and- all his thoughts came to a halt when he heard glad shatter followed by a yelp.
Blinking into the kitchen he saw her standing next to what appeared to be a broken glass, holding onto her other hand that was bleeding.
"Shit."
"It's fine, just go."
Blinking in front of her, he gripped her wrist, staring at her. Glaring up at him she was about to retort but when their eyes meant. Now, as sappy as it could sound, she could literally see an internal argument swirling within his forest hues- she knew that look. The look he'd give when he would be trying to outdo his heart in a battle with his 'logic'.
"Five."
"Wait. I'm thinking."
"About."
"You know what."
"You don't have to force yourself to love me-"
"I'm forcing myself not to."
That was all it took for the two to realize how he had confessed back to her, admitting he had felt the same way about her.
"Why?"
"No, you'll be in danger and become a liability and I have other plans and-"
"You'll be happy for once?"
He doesn't remember the last time he had ever let his heart win against his mind, but perhaps the reason for the argument siding with his heart made it easier for him to rule it out, allowing him to break free from the restraints that had held him down ever since he had time traveled.
Although they were ready to move onto a stronger and more important change in their relationship, he had been ever so kind to set ground rules;
"Rule number one, you will do as I ask if we're in danger, your life matters more than anything."
"Rule number two, you will STAY PUT, and I mean it, none of that hero shit."
"And most importantly, if I ever disappear or am no longer here, you will move on."
Simple right?
Not really.
For at that very moment, the Hargreevs were staring at their 13-year-old brother arguing with another teenager, who had fallen out of the portal behind him, in the kitchen.
"Umm...number Five-"
Not now Luther. I have bigger fish to deal with-"
"Why are you mad?!"
"WHY AM - OH MY - GOD YOU - "Everyone in the room could see the boy malfunction until he paused, taking a deep breath he exhaled and looked at his siblings, "What's the date?"
"Five I-"
"Not. A.Word," he growled, not even sparing her a glance.
"But-"
He shushed her by placing a finger on his lips then pointing with that same finger with his brows raised, seething out a "Silence from you."
That was the first time the siblings had seen their brother in a long time, and it horrified them how he had turned into a worse nutjob than they had imagined.
...
After the little kitchen fiasco, Y/N was instructed by Five to stay in his room.
"WHY ARE YOU LOCKING THE DOOR!"
"Clearly because you can't be trusted. Nor can the idiots outside, so make yourself comfortable or something." He yelled from over the door and stomped back down the stairs to get a cup of coffee.
"What're you looking for?@ Klaus asked, feet perched up on the table, "Scratch that, who's that wee lass locked up in your dungeon of a room?"
Clicking his tongue he threw another empty can away, "My wife- well, that's it, gonna get myself a cup of coffee"
"Excuse me? Your what?" Allison spat, arms crossed as she looked at him with raised brows, causing him to turn around and glare at her, "What part of that statement was unclear to you?"
"I mean I'm just amazed someone would even go out of their way to spend more than an hour with you, let alone marry you." She snorted, glancing at Diego who entered the room.
"Heard you got divorced by the way." Smirking at her scowl he blinked away. Initially, he was going to go get coffee but then the thought of locking her upstairs was bothering him even more, which is why he blinked into his room, only to find her tying up his bed sheets.
"What are you doing?"
"Redecorating."
Cue him dragging her to the doughnut shop with him, grumbling his way there as she swung their hands back and forth, "You never listen, I mean I told you- we've been married for so long and-"
"Oh look we're here."
The argument did erupt until the two were actually sitting and waiting for their coffee.
"Rule number three..." Five glanced up from the map the man had made for him on the napkin, noticing how his wife was just staring ahead as she began speaking (never a good sign), "What about it?" he muttered casually.
"Did you always plan on leaving me behind?"
"I-" he paused, causing her to look up from her doughnut, was he really going to not answer her again, if she hadn't jumped into the portal behind him, he would've just left her, wouldn't he?
It amazed her how well he could still easily shut her out, even after being married for so long, sometimes she would feel as if she was completely bare in front of him, while he stood there, layer upon layer, gazing at her with an air of mockery.
"Five I-" she was cut off by the sound of the bell, pausing when she felt him grab her hand and give it a little squeeze. She could hardly react before she was blinked out into the back of the shop.
"Wait-" he grabbed her face and looked at her, trying to console the pain in her eyes, "I'll be back, don't move." before blinking away.
That was the first time she had experienced the adrenaline, the fear, and the anxiety that came with the job, being a desk worker had protected her from all these things, he had protected her from all these things, but now that she was here, she had begun to understand why he wanted to leave her behind. To some extent she had wanted to apologize to him, beg him to leave her behind so he could carry out his task, but on the other hand, she knew she couldn't survive without him, she needed him to be able to live on.
"What do you mean to leave you?" he asked, as he stared at her, the two were making it back to the house. He was holding onto her hand, pulling her closer ever so often.
"I mean, I understand if you want to leave me behind, " her words stung him more than she could ever imagine, but she could see that as soon she glanced at his furrowed brows, eyes sharp as he stared ahead.
"You say that so casually, yet, you're the one who made me believe in love," he whispers to himself, entering the quiet Hargreeves mansion, hopeful that everyone was asleep.
"I- no, Five, what I mean is, I now understand what you meant when you said I'd become a liability." she pulled on his hand, only for him to slip it out of her grasp and go to the mini bar, grabbing a bottle and glass. He was in no mood for this conversation,  no mood for her insecurities, no mood for her selfless nature. For once he was glad that she had decided to be selfish, to follow him here, sure, he wasn't happy about her being put in danger, but feeling her next to him, knowing she was with him, especially after the commission sent people for him, made him realize how even if he had left her behind, they would’ve gotten to her- doing God knows what to extract information out of her.
"Five, please talk to me."
Klaus slowly peaked up from behind the couch, a lover's quarrel was more entertaining than listening to Ben yells at him.
"What do you want me to say Y/N?" he sighed, pouring himself a glass, "Please enlighten me, what happened for you to follow me here but then" He took a swig f his glass, gulping it down in one go before slamming it on the counter, smacking his lips as he glared at her.
She flinched at his tone, he had never used that tone with her, let alone yell at her. "I-" words caught in her throat she looked at the ground, gripping the ends of her coat's sleeves, "I just...thought...maybe- I mean I." her words dying out as the rush of emotions finally started taking over, one of the many things that made the two different.  While he was a being more composed than the statue of Buddha, she was a whirlwind of emotions, moments away from breaking loose. The only thing the two did have in common was their ability to bottle up their feelings.
"Aw no, little girl, don't give up." Klaus whispered, earning  a "shush" from Ben who was standing next to Y/N then looking at Five, "Klaus, defuse this situation, say something so they stop arguing."
Shaking his head in response he leaned back down on the couch, he wanted to see the drama, not a part of it.
Sighing in defeat she looked at her shoes, he was right, why did she follow him, why did she decide to put him in more danger than he was already in, why was she making it more difficult for the man who had saved her numerous times - at this point, she was sure it was the raging teenage hormones, because the moment he called out her name again, with that sweet, calming tone, she broke down, sinking to her knees.
Five watched her struggle with her words, he knew he was pushing it too far, not once in the time of being with her had he done this. Usually, because she was the more upfront one out of the two, saying what was on her mind, asking for what she needed, doing what she felt was right, like how she'd throw away the file he'd be reading after coming from work, "prepping for the next mission"
"Woman! I was reading that-"
"Come to bed, it’s a simple mission, we've gone through worse."
We, that's what was bothering him, since when did they go from "We" to "i", "me" or "you". Singular pronouns were barely part of her vocabulary, so what had happened for her to suddenly say this? Was he scared? Of course, he was afraid, he had been with her for so long, relying on her for so long that the thought of her leaving midway may have bud some form of separation anxiety. Yes, he had wanted to leave her behind, but perhaps those three seconds he spent staring at the portal, back in the 60s were him waiting to see if she would follow, or at least come looking for him. Hypocritical, it was, but he had never claimed to be some saint, he was a walking canister of red flags. It was her, she was the pure one, the proof of innocence and humility, if anyone out there deserved true, ultimate happiness, it was only her and if the world was not always at war with him, he would've spent time trying to give it all to her.
He looked at her, wanting to continue but froze when he saw her crumble before him, instantly blinking next to her as he held her close, whispering nonstop apologies. Kissing the top of her head,  heart squeezing when he felt her grip on his jacket, mumbling how much she loved him but was afraid.
"I know you are. I'll do whatever it takes to keep you safe, my love."
That very night- when Klaus was knocked out Ben saw a different side of Five, one that he had not seen even when he was alive, the way Five was holding onto her, assuring her of how much he loved her but would also keep her safe, how sorry he was that he dragged her into this. Ben had never known Five to be one to give value to emotions, let alone use any words of comfort.
It was safe to say, over the next couple of days, Ben had developed a certain bond with the girl, not that she knew he existed, but he felt like he owed it to Five- or rather he felt like Five deserved to have that ounce of security and happiness kept safe and alive. Sometimes Klaus couldn't find him, he'd call him but he wouldn't show up, he'd look for him, call him out had him thinking his powers were losing their effect. In actuality, Ben would be following her around, while she would make little trips to the library to find books for Five or sometimes the doughnut shop to get something. He knew she wouldn't know about him, perhaps he wanted to befriend her, someone who was not a Hargreeves, someone who was not a freak. So, he was content, watching over her like a guardian angel, even if she didn't know he existed
Or that's what he had thought.
"It's all right, I'm fine, I feel safe with you," she said buckling up in the truck, the one they had just stolen, and fixing her attire, the first thing she had done after coming to the sixties, got a pair of pants, after following Klaus catfish old rich women, and create a cult- technically that wasn't how hippie culture had come to being, her inner 'desk worker' kept on reminding her, but since their arrival had already messed up the time, might as well lets these people do whatever they want.
"Why thank you, that brings me great joy" Klaus chided, as he stepped on the gas, the beads on his weird beard jiggling.
"Not you, Ben." She said simply, flipping onto the page she had bookmarked in her book, the only activity that would remind her of her husband.
"I- who?" Klaus squeaked, Ben, who was sitting in between the two gasped, turning to face her, "Yo, did she just-"
"No, I can not see him, but I know he's here, I read about all of you, from the diary your father wrote- snagged it off Leonard, so, I figured out, the mysterious feeling of being watched came was not me losing my mind, but that your brother never crossed over." She mumbled, turning to another page, "Thank you, Ben, I'm sure Five would appreciate it."
"You sure are something, doll," Klaus muttered as he saw Ben smiling like a five-year-old child who got that very special toy he wanted.
It was after this confession that she wanted to see Ben and get to know him better, Five had told her about his siblings but had mentioned how Ben was one of the most innocent ones. That's why she wanted to meet him, something she told Five, a few minutes before they were going to go back to their usual timeline.
"You know, I saw you die." He whispered, sitting next to her on the stairs of the porch, looking at the bodies, "I almost broke my promise."
"Almost" she smiled, reaching for his hand, gently placing her head on his shoulder, playing with his fingers, "I knew you'd save me, oh, by the way, did I tell you, Ben has been my guardian angel all this time."
"I had a feeling," he whispered, bringing her hand to his lips, pressing them against the back of her hand, "Glad you figured it out, my clever little desk worm."
"When did you figure it out?" She asked, pulling him up to his feet as she stood up too, going to where everyone was not standing in a circle, "When you told me about the book floating above your head, you would've loved him if you met him."
WRONG
"Five!" she gasped, ducking when a tentacle almost hit her, missing her but almost hitting Five who had blinked away.
"Nice to see you too Ben" he yelled, sitting on the top of the railing, "Mind not aiming at my wife, she's not like us."
For a split second, Ben stopped, glancing at her before nodding towards the exit, "Scram kid, and get a new boyfriend."
.
"So, that was Ben?" she asked, pressing a napkin against Five's bleeding forehead.
"An asshole, yes." Klaus groaned, staring up at the sky, "Is it me or were they better than us."
"Who were you kissing by the way," she asked, both lost in their own little world, "You" he responded simply, ignoring the headache and the way Allison was screaming at him to figure this out.
"Hey, love birds, what do we do now?" Diego asked as the lot walked out of the park, pausing to look up at the billboard of the Sparrow Academy.
"Find a place to rest and think?" She said, tugging on Five's hand who was focused on something else, "Hmm? yeah, sure."
.
"What are you, a commie?" Diego groaned, as Five flopped on the bed, ignoring him before mumbling something and knocking out, knowing Y/N was in the same room as Vanya and Allison.
Y/N had left the sisters alone, they seemed to be having a moment, and she did not want to be part of it. She had decided to take a shower, changing into some sweats she had bought with a card she had swiped off someone on the streets, pickpocketing was one of the only few tricks Five had taught her- never how to hold a gun though, said she was too pure for it.
Making her way down to Five's room, she heard the boys shuffling and arguing inside,
"Fuck- KLAUS, I said chocolate!"
"It is chocolate my bro- only with a dash of-"
"Hey Five, where do you want the presents?"
"By the table you big ape."
"Klaus, please get a decent cake."
Cake? Opening the door, which as per expectations was unlocked, she met with 4 pairs of panicked eyes, a pair belonging to her husband in a bathing gown, squeaky clean. She could see some balloons on the ground around a table, on top of which was a reddish cake, poorly wrapped boxes on the other end.
"Surprise~" Klaus sang weakly as Five face palmed, Diego hiding the gift he was holding in his hand behind him, Luther just standing there frozen. "What are you - what is happening?" she asked, entering the room, before looking around.
"Its- I thought you were asleep." he muttered going over to her as he held her hands, "Happy birthday my love." he smiled, kissing her forehead, "I'm sorry I didn't remember earlier, I don't know how it slipped my mind." he muttered, "I didn't get you anything special but-" he paused when he felt her envelope him in a hug, almost crushing the air out of him as she let out a small sob.
"Aw, don't cry" Klaus clapped from behind them as Five pulled her away, wiping her face with his sleeve. "We're here." Victor declared as they entered the room, Allison behind him, "I brought the pastries, which weren't cheap by the way- are we late?" She asked, eying Y/N who was busy unwrapping a gift.
"No, Mrs.Five Hargeeves was early," Diego said as he took the box of treats from her, and placed them on the couch.
She gasped at the mini journal, flipping through the empty pages, ready for her to fill. Caressing the blue leather, she didn't know what she'd fill it with, but she knew by the end of the year it'd be filled to the brim. Honestly, she was surprised about how he remembered this, their little tradition, admist this chaos, he'd get her a journal each year, for her birthday, telling her that even if he was not there anymore, their memories would be engraved in letters, ones she could go through whenever she missed him. She didn't know when she had begun crying, only realized it when she felt a hand on her shoulder, looking up to see Five, smile at her, not his usual cheeky confident self, but a smile of reassurance, one he gave her when he had rejected her confession, when the two had realized a child could never be part of their marriage when they had lost their little turtle.
"I'm sorry." he whispered, only for her to shake her head, "Please don't be, I'm just glad I'm with you."
"So am I."
None of them really knew what was going to happen to anyone, what was going to happen next, if there was ever a moment for them to find their own happy ending, but at the end of it, she knew that Five would find a way. She believed in that blindly, after all, he was her savior, he was her knight in shining armor sent to pull her away from her mundane life, he was her Zorro or Hercules- her idiot husband. Her one true love.

╭─► ❝The Servant: Umbrella Academy's Servant❞
Five Hargreeves × Female! Reader || Written by Diana (d1ana-m0nd)
Tumblr media
➢ Description : It's a well known fact that Sir. Reginald Hargreeves adopted 7 children to save the world from it's impending doom. Though, the number of children will change from 7 to 8 once a close friend of his, Rita Rossweisse was on her death bed and requested him to take in her child, who fortunately was born on October 1st 1989.
➢ Word Count : 9,537
➢ Links : Masterlist && Character Profile
➢ Note : I just wanted to give a heads up for people who like Luther, he's going to be a bit antagonistic towards the reader because she's an accomplice. Also, in S1 of TUA, the writers' focused on his mission driven trait which led to a snowball effect on his decisions and how he treated others (ex: Vanya), though that does not mean I will be writing him off as an antagonist throughout the whole series, just this season since he is still learning and growing. I mean no harm Luther simps / stans / fans. 🏳️
Also, it's been three years since I have done Wushu (Chinese martial arts) so the fighting scene might be crappy. It will be inaccurate as well since I never reached orange belt lol, I just watched YouTube videos of Agatha Wong and other Wushu martial artists. ;-;

Chapter 3: Extra Ordinary
Blue light streamed through the window as Allison sat on the windowsill, a cigarette in hand; she took in the scenery from the place she once considered home. The sound of car horns beeping accompanied the lively city atmosphere, whilst the lights of the streetlamps came off harshly. Oddly enough, this loud environment felt homely to her. The rumor inhaled the cigarette then exhaled it, letting the flares of the smoke blow out the window. She let herself be more immersed to the atmosphere, which led her unaware of someone else's presence in the room.
"Ah, Miss Allison." The advanced chimpanzee announced his arrival. Allison hurriedly put out the cigarette, leading it to fizzle out. She faced Pogo with a sheepish smile, as though she was not caught red-handed.
"I was looking for you." Pogo returned her smile, then took a small step towards her.
"How did you, uh… did you know I was up here?" The rumor scratched her nape. She really wasn't expecting anyone to walk in on her smoking and emoting to herself.
"Oh, it wasn't hard. This is always where you used to come when you were upset."
"Who told you I was…" The girl in curls paused, then sighed as a certain someone came to mind.
"Luther." She said fiddling with the aged locket that was given to her by the same person.
"Actually, it was Miss Vanya."
Allison was taken aback by his words. Vanya… cared about her? For a moment, she felt regret come over her because her sibling went out of her way to check on her… then she recalled the book. The rumor would have openly showed her grimace at the thought of her sister but, Pogo’s next words took her by surprise.
"She called to make sure you were okay and if it weren't for Y/N reminding me, I would have forgotten to check in on you." Pogo said with a small smile, as though he was silently thanking the girls for caring about Allison's well being.
The girl in curls stood up from the windowsill as she inhaled deeply, stuffing her hands into her pocket. "Yeah, I, um… said some pretty unkind things to her." Though it sounded like she said it out of defeat.
The well dressed chimpanzee frowned at her words, but tried to be optimistic. "She's your sister. She knows you didn't mean it."
Allison scoffed as she looked away. "Doubt it. She doesn't know anything about me, which is fine, cause I don't know shit about her either."
"Language." Pogo said which brought a small smile to the rumor's face followed by a soft chuckle. "Sorry."
"It's just…" The woman breathed through her nose. "It's been a while since we've all lived under the same roof."
"Almost 13 years." He added, which added onto the emotional baggage that Allison was carrying at the moment.
"How did you do it? Alone in this huge house for so long?"
"Well, one grows used to things, even if, sometimes… one shouldn't." The chimpanzee looked away, not wanting to give away the sadness in his eyes.
Wanting to divert the young lass’ attention to something else, Pogo decided it would be a great time to bring her over the CCTV room and to follow through with Master Hargreeves’ plan till the truth is finally revealed.
"Come with me. I want to show you something. It might just cheer you up." The advanced chimpanzee was about to head out the room but he suddenly turned to where Allison stamped out the cigarette earlier. "And make sure you fully extinguished that cigarette. Wouldn't want to start a fire."
The girl in curls chuckles to herself as she now recalled Pogo never lets his guard down, it’s almost like nothing goes under his radar, he acted more father-like than their own father. She then quickly extinguishes the fire and hurriedly catches up with Pogo. The two walked side by side towards the CCTV room, and entered the room together.
The chimpanzee approached the monitors and turned them on to show the familiar memories the academy created back in their youth. "Your father stopped recording years ago. But, I still come here from time to time. When I'm missing you kids."
"Pogo, this is…" The woman was too stunned to speak but she managed to choke out a few words. "Most families have home movies to look back on. We have surveillance footage."
"I hoped it might cheer you up."
"It does…" Allison laughed, letting her guard down and allowed her inner child to be lured in by the memories being replayed by the monitors.
Suddenly, Allison's gaze turns to a monitor of Vanya playing the violin as a smaller Y/N sat beside the violinist cheering her on, though it looked like Vanya wore a fake smile accepting every compliment you gave her.
"And Vanya…" Her smile fell. Vanya was telling the truth.
"Why didn't we include her? I mean, if anybody ever treated Claire like that, I can't even imagine…"
"You were a child, Miss Allison." Pogo pointed out but Allison rebutted. "Yeah… but I'm not anymore and neither is she."
"If you're not in a hurry. The rest of the tapes are in that cabinet." The advanced chimpanzee gestured to the nearby cabinet, while his other hand took out the keys and left it on the table. "Make sure you lock up when you go."
"Things have been disappearing lately. These are too important to lose." He added as Allison softly chuckled at his words. She has a feeling, she knows who might be responsible for it.
Whilst she was busy reminiscing, Pogo stood beside her, double checking at the breadcrumbs he left. He needed the secrets to be unraveled as soon as possible, he can only pray it wouldn’t be too late. The chimpanzee took one last look at Allison then left the room.
Once he left, the woman in curls rummaged through the tapes and found a tape that stood out. It was oddly placed, it even seemed like that it was purposely placed there. She played the footage not expecting much. To her surprise, her expectations were surpassed by the content of the footage.
Her eyes widened, then she straightened herself. "Oh, God. Dad…"
Allison paused the tape, without hesitation, she began to frantically look for Luther in the academy. She checked from door to door only to be frustrated that Luther wasn’t home. She was about to give up until she heard the front door open then ran - more like fast walking - to where the footsteps came from.
The woman in curls grabbed onto Luther’s arm. "There you are! I've been looking everywhere for you."
"What are you still doing here? I thought you were gone." He raised his brow in her presence.
"No, I was gonna go, and then Pogo showed me this -"
"Well, listen…" The larger male interrupted her with a defeated sigh. "I was wrong about Dad's death."
The woman was astonished by his words, it wasn’t like him. "What?"
"Yeah. I was wrong about Diego. You know, to accuse my own brother of that is just-"
"No, I, I know, I get it." The rumor tried to cut in but got interfered once again.
"- Seeing all of you and being back here… I should be the one who's trying to bring us back together, not tear us apart." Spaceboy said but it more or less it sounded like he was talking to himself in the mirror.
"Would you shut up?!" Allison shouted angrily.
"What?"
"You were right, about Dad." She stated, now it was the male’s turn to be confused by the sudden turn of events.
"Come on, I gotta show you something."
Even though the larger male was silent, she took his arm and guided him to the CCTV room. As they head to the CCTV room, they happen to passby Y/N and Five. Luther and Allison checked on you guys - since you guys looked kinda messed up - but Five had a sudden outburst and you had to make random excuses to bring him to his room, whilst juggling to not drop Delores. Once they were a bit far, Luther finally had the courage to speak up.
"Does Y/N having a mannequin have something to do with whatever you were going to show me?" He asked.
To which Allison threw a look at his direction. "No, and I have no idea where she got that. All I know is she's been glued to Five's side since he got back."
Once they had arrived, the rumor was quick to replay the footage. Luther couldn’t believe what he was watching. At first he was in denial but, as he replayed the clip again and again, he was able to digest the information but he still doesn’t understand… Why would their mother - er robot, rather, “Grace” kill their father? He kept replaying the scene trying to understand what occurred during the night of the murder but, got no answers in the end.
"Play it again." Number one ordered again…
Allison had to refrain herself from rolling her eyes because of how mind numbing it was to replay the same scene over and over again.
"We've watched it over and over, it's the same thing every time." She pointed out.
Luther sighs, she wasn’t wrong, they weren’t getting answers. Reluctantly, the rumor rewind the clip, the VCR whirred indicating it was being replayed.
"Er… what is she doing?" He asked, gesturing towards Grace on the monitor.
"The tea. Did she poison him?"
"Uh- I don't know." The woman in curly hair uncrossed her arms, unsure of what she was witnessing.
The larger male sighed exasperated then turned his gaze towards hers. "Where did you find this?" He gestured to the footage.
Allison stopped leaning against the cabinet then sat on the chair beside Luther's side, "I was looking at old footage of us as kids, and I just saw the footage sitting there."
"Yeah, Dad must have started using the security system again." There was a pregnant pause present in the room.
"He was getting more and more paranoid. He thought people were out to get him." He muttered, recalling the call he had with his dad a month prior.
Back then, He didn’t think much of it but it did worry him that Grace and Y/N weren’t taking care of him. However, after calling Y/N, he felt reassured by her words and assumed that their father was just becoming paranoid for nothing. Now, he regrets taking his words for granted.
"Well… I guess maybe he was right."
"But Mom?" Allison refused to accept this.
"I mean she's not capable of…" She gestured to the footage but as her eyes landed the footage she began to have second thoughts, she sighs. "Is she?"
Suddenly, a memory from the funeral played in Luther’s head.
"Then there's the issue of the missing monocle." The ape hybrid added to his conspiracy. Even though it was silent, you could hear the others internally groaning as more words came out of his mouth.
"Y/N, while you were cleaning up Dad's room, was the monocle still there?"
"Last night I wasn't assigned to give him medicine, it was Mrs. Grace's turn. So I can't be too sure if he wore the monocle. Though the crime scene cleaners and investigators did let me know that they made sure to keep everything in the same spot." You reported, as your thinking pose shifted into your default one.
"Make sure to check the cameras around the time they were cleaning." He commanded, you bowed in return to confirm you will do as he says.
Spaceboy’s eyes widened at the revelation… What if…
"Where was Y/N last night? Why didn't she inform me about the footage?" He bombarded.
"I already told you! Ever since Five came back she's been stuck to his side." The rumor answered not catching onto Luther’s wavelength.
"But, it doesn't make sense, she had the time to check the footage whilst they were preparing the funeral, and didn’t Pogo and her switch shifts in monitoring the CCTVs?”
Suddenly, Allison went silent, as she began to piece the puzzles and see where Luther was coming from, now that he pointed that out, Y/N could be a possible suspect and lately, she has been avoiding the academy for days, ever since Five came back, she could be using him as her alibi. Which makes her even more suspicious but she highly doubts she has something to do with it murdering their father.
After all, it is a well known fact that the servant has always been neutral, that’s why she is given a number that is neither a prime nor an odd number. It would be rare of her to step out of line. Plus, she only does what needs to be done, she wouldn’t do anything if it wasn’t under someone’s orders.
ㅤㅤㅤ❲ T H E ☕ S E R V A N T ❳
It was silent as the duo- trio rather, headed to Five’s room. Five’s head was flooded with ways on how he should retrieve the information to stop the apocalypse with Delores’ assistance. While Y/N’s head was filled with questions for Five, you wanted to ask him questions about the masked people and the people who tried to shoot them down at the doughnut shop but it didn’t feel like the right time to do so.
If only Five was open with you as he was to Vanya then you wouldn’t be reluctant to ask him questions… The only good thing that came out of this was that he trusted you enough to keep you around which made it easier to monitor him.
Once the three entered his room, you placed Delores on a nearby chair as Five stumbled his way to the bed. He fell face first onto the pillow; It sounded like a fart but you had to keep your lips pressed into a thin line or he’d bark at you. To distract yourself from laughing, you glanced at the mannequin, expecting it to do something. Alas, it did nothing but look into where it was painted to look at.
"It might be of use later…” You told yourself but you highly doubted it would be more useful than you.
The servant sighed then turned her gaze towards the boy. “Master Five, let me patch you up.”
“No, I can deal with this myself, I’ll just sleep it off.” He shrugged you off.
Unfortunately for him, you were determined, the look on your face supported that notion. “I’m afraid I won’t allow that. Your wound might get infected if you neglect it. Plus, seeing as you are hell bent on avoiding others, I am the only one who you can order around who wouldn’t try to look over your shoulder.”
Five’s thin lips were ready to bare the teeth that were hidden underneath his lips but his mind intervened before he could do so. You had a point, even though you were unexpectedly dragged into this, you could be of use to him -
"Hey, you know, I've just now realized why you're so uptight. You must be horny as hell!" He laughed then added, "All those years by yourself. It's gonna screw with your head being alone."
"If you want to let the stress out, why not ask Y/N for help?"
"Y/N seems like she'd be good in bed, if you're the type to have a corruption kink and all. I wouldn't be surprised if you have one because you seem the type-" Klaus snapped his finger, "And, andd~! She wouldn't get arrested for dating you."
Warmth creeped onto Five’s cheeks as he recalled Klaus’ words from earlier. He was lucky that his face fell first, you wouldn’t be able to see how much you - correction, how much Klaus’ words affected him. In case his ears were reddening as well, he decided to bury his face further into the pillow to hide it but it was a poor attempt on his part.
“Do whatever you want.” His words were muffled by the pillow.
“What?” You asked, unable to hear his words.
The brown haired boy sat up and glared at your direction, which made you regret your words. “Do whatever you want but don't even think of watching me sleep.”
You nodded then, left his room to go get the first aid kit from the infirmary. Which made the boy sigh in relief then returned to lying on the bed but, this time he made sure to avoid lying on his injured side. As he stared into space, he began to silently plan out how he would get more information only to be disturbed by his beloved, Delores.
“Others would take a rest the moment their body hits the mattress yet, here you are letting your thoughts consume you rather than exhaustion.” Delores mused as she laughed at Five's situation.
“I assumed you would be grateful that I took the time to take you out for a stroll. That was no easy task.” The boy retorted, he knew she was going to piss him off for fun, she’s always been like that since they got together.
“Yeah I am grateful but, I would rather get to know my in-laws than be stuck in this room all day.” The mannequin teased with a knowing smirk, she knew Five was easy to play with when he's needy for someone's attention.
“Getting tired of me already? I thought you loved me.” The brown haired boy joked with a grin on his face. It was a rare sight that only Delores got to witness more often than the others.
“I do love you but, I recall you numerous times telling me off that I shouldn’t disturb you when you’re at ‘work’.” She rebutted which made her beloved chuckle in response.
“Smartass.”
“Master Five is everything alright?” You tilted your head, confused by what you had just walked in. The brunette was talking to someone just earlier…
“Oh! Is she the one you mentioned that’s always stuck by Vanya’s side?” Delores was ecstatic to finally meet one of the people Five grew up with. Even though he wasn't fond of you, Delores grew to love you whenever you were brought up with Vanya. She thought you both had a cute dynamic.
The physically young man wordlessly nodded to Delores, which you mistook as him saying that everything was alright. Assuming that everything was alright, you were quick to settle down by his bed and prepared what you needed: bandages, a surgical needle, a synthetic suture, a bottle of hydrogen peroxide, a clean washcloth along with a small bowl of lukewarm water. Once prepared, you took care of his injured side. The room was silent as the boy let out small huffs and your breathing were the only thing audible but, Five was hearing other things besides your breathing.
"Sweetheart, why don't you introduce me to her? I'd love to get to know her. She seems like a nice girl." The mannequin requested.
The brunette could not tell if she was trying to press his buttons or not. They both knew perfectly well that Delores trying to interact with others would just cause confusion but, his beloved is quite a chatterbox. Five might as well play along, or she would make his ears bleed from constant pleading. The thought of doing so made him roll his eyes, which you caught.
Thinking you did something wrong, you raised a question. "Did I do something wrong, Master Five?"
"Nothing, Delores wants to get to know you." He reassured, as an imaginary grin on Delores’ face grew. If you were not so observant, he would have thrown a quick glare in the mannequin’s direction for her cheekiness.
The mannequin bursted out laughing which made the brown-haired male flustered. "AHAHAHA! We've been together for 31 years and I never knew you had this kink."
"Oh right!" The servant was weirded out by this. You knew that you had to play along if you didn’t want to be torn apart. "I didn't introduce myself. Hi Ms. Delores, I'm Y/N, also referred to as Number Zero."
"I won't lie, she is very adorable. I can see why you'd want to keep her around." Dolores added, a finger ghosting on her cheek that complimented that cheeky grin of hers.
"I'm not keeping her." He hissed at Dolores.
You didn't know what he meant by that so you ignored it, and decided to ask another question. "So uh, what did Ms. Delores say?"
"She said that you seem like someone she'd hang around." The boy lied through his teeth but the blush across his face said otherwise.
"That is a complete 180 from what I said Five~" The mannequin sang then giggled.
For a moment, the room went silent, you were busy with Five's wounds whilst the boy was busy keeping his eyes on the mannequin. Dolores watched from her chair, as though taunting the brunette. The silence was comfortable at first but then it began to grow awkward because it felt like you had to do something to fill in the silence.
Out of nowhere, you blurted out a stupid question. "So, Ms. Dolores, do you like cooking?"
The moment you were able to process what you just blurted out, you wanted to smash yourself into a bloody wall. How could you be so stupid? Who in their right mind would ask if a mannequin - a flammable object, mind you - if it loved to cook. Even if it did, how was it supposed to cook? It would make sense if you were asking a robot or an advanced mammal - actually, anything that is capable of mimicking human behavior - but, of all things you just had to ask, you asked a flammable object if it liked to cook!? You were on the verge of running away at this point and let Five deal with his injury.
"Is she serious?" Dolores asked, surprised by what she heard as well.
Five didn't know what to say to his beloved. Trying to look for confirmation of your sincerity, he turned to you and saw that you were covering your face out of embarrassment. It was kinda cute. Watching the usually blank-faced girl wear a different expression… it made you more human rather than a puppet that the other's usually claimed you to be.
To the other numbers (Five was no exception), the servant seemed inhumane, too perfect to be human, you were practically a doll. If we are talking about what kind of doll would describe you, then "barbie" would be a suitable description. A doll that every girl dreamed to be, a doll that was suitable for every job it came across.
However their assumption of you changed when they noticed the cracks you were trying to hide from them, like how you stiffened and forced yourself to smile despite the insults being hurled at you, how you did want to go against their father but decided against it because of hesitance, and how you try your best to not cry or scream whenever their father needed your blood or for experimentation.
You were just as messed up as them…
From that point on, they recognized that it didn't feel right to label you as a doll. Though it didn't diminish the fact that you acted like a puppet, how you wouldn't act unless someone pulled the strings, how you mimicked others to look natural, and how you spoke like it came out from a script instead of saying what you actually think or feel.
Though, Five supposes this is the reason why you were given the "Number 0", it is neither even or odd. A number that represents balance, you stood on neither side, you were just someone who’s responsible for neutralizing issues before things could escalate. Strangely enough, despite you trying to act normal, you were the one that stood out among the dysfunctional family, because of how mentally unaffected you were by the household. Even Vanya had difficulty expressing her anger for you in her memoir.
Whilst the two numbers were busy with their own thoughts, someone was watching the scenery before her, amused by the silence that settled within the room.
The mannequin internally laughed at what she was witnessing. She found it rather ironic that despite Five being blunt about his distaste for you, you kept chasing him and made sure if he was alright. It was even more hilarious that he was beginning to open up to you but his hostility is still present. He hated you, you disliked him yet, you both cared for each other in your own way.
Even though she didn't have a heart, she felt envious of you. To be able to hold Five, to be able to run after him, to be able to stop him from overworking. You had everything Dolores wanted. But, alas, those are merely musings of a soulless husk.
Although this was an unspoken truth, Five knew his beloved "Dolores" wasn't real, she was merely something that manifested out of thin air because he wanted to keep himself sane during the apocalypse. She even recalled that time when some people from the commission found out about Dolores' existence, and they judged Five's mental state for it, even though Five acted like it was nothing, She was worried for him. They both knew it was the truth but he refused to acknowledge the reality of her existence.
Putting aside her jealousy, the mannequin was glad that despite all the weirdness Five carried, he found someone who did try to understand him. The thought of your open-mindedness and kindness warmed Dolores' non-existent heart.
"Thanks." Five broke the silence, his gaze elsewhere.
"Huh?" You tilted your head, not expecting his words.
"I know you heard me, don't make me say it twice or I'll give you a reason to be deaf." The brunette threatened, usually his threats would make you flinch but, this time it made you smile, not a forced one.
Your genuine smile went unnoticed but the tone of your voice didn't fail to express your sincerity. "You're welcome, Five."
The boy froze up as he realized you were calling him by his name again. He didn't know whether to call you out on it or just let it go… In the end, he failed to notice you had already left his side.
"I didn't think you'd warm up to her considering you told me how much you disliked her." The mannequin teased a knowing look on her face.
The brunette merely rolled his eyes at her then laid down on the bed, avoiding to ruin the stitches you made. "She's one of the tolerable ones, I have no choice."
Dolores smiled to herself knowing that was a lie.

The next day, both the boy and the girl exited the house through the fire exit, with Dolores carefully placed into the duffle bag along with alcohol. The seance noticed you guys sneaking out and tried to join in but Five declined his offer. As Klaus was busy whining about how much he loved his 'little brother', you managed to hijack a nearby van and let Five drive to his desired location while you sat at the back with Dolores.
The brunette parked the van in front of the prosthetics building, watching people come and go while he fiddled with the glass eyeball in his hand. He mindlessly watched as a woman walked past the stolen van whilst a group of children played ball.
Seeing normalcy made Five sigh, he was envious of those people. People who lived a normal life had it better than him. He could not stop the feeling of envy creeping up on him. After all, they didn't have to worry about putting their lives on the line for others. Unlike them, the boy grew up in a dysfunctional household and got thrusted into the apocalypse at a young age. He was forced to grow up early and prioritize his life over others, which went against the old man's teachings.
As Five was busy with his own demons, he didn't notice you had let in uninvited guests.
You were bored out of your mind, and began to look out the window in hopes of finding something interesting, until you saw a familiar lanky figure heading towards the van. It was Klaus heading towards the van with Luther in tow, you opened the back door and waved at them to come in.
The lanky man skipped his way to the backdoor and began conversing with Dolores. As you tried your best to stop him from harassing it - because you had a feeling Five would rip him to pieces.
"I didn't think I would find a beauty like you in here." The seance whispered into Dolores' ear.
"Master Klaus you shouldn't-"
"Shh shh, let her speak." He said as he caressed the mannequin's cheek, even though it didn't say a word, Klaus giggled and started cradling Dolores in his arms.
"Does everyone in the Hargreeves family like talking to non-living things or something?" You questioned yourself as you bit the inside of your cheek.
At the front of the truck, it seemed like Luther was planning to sit in the passenger seat but it was locked. You unlocked the door for him since Five was unresponsive. You silently watched as the larger male struggled to enter the van due to his frame.
Suddenly, the brunette in the driver's seat screamed.
“No!” Five's scream caught you and Spaceboy's attention, you hurriedly went to his side and rubbed the small of his back.
“Five.” You murmured not wanting to overwhelm him with loud sounds.
“Five!” Luther called out, the volume of his voice made you flinch and cover the ear he screamed at.
“Hey Five!” The male shouted once again yet, it wasn't effective.
“NO!” The younger male screamed as he grabbed onto his hair whilst his eyes widened in fear, his breathing becoming ragged.
“Five!” You shook Five awake as the larger male shouted his brother's name like a mantra, trying to bring back the boy into reality.
When the brunette finally calmed down, you continued rubbing his back, concern etched into your features. “Are you alright, Master Five?”
He disregarded your words as he began to process the uninvited guest that sat on the passenger seat, "You shouldn’t be… How did you find me?”
“Um…” Space boy gestured to Klaus, who sat at the back of the van, cradling Five's beloved in his arms.
The seance murmured, “Hey baby…”
Once the lanky man noticed everyone's eyes were on him, he shooed away their lingering gazes. “Hey, a little privacy, guys. We’re really hitting it off back here.”
Out of irritation, the boy throws the nearest object at Klaus. The lanky man screamed and used the mannequin as a shield, in an attempt to protect himself. Luckily, you caught the object before Klaus got injured and threw Five a side eye, which made him roll his eyes.
“Get out! You can’t be here! I’m in the middle of something." The physically younger male hissed at his barely sober brother.
The seance dismissed his threat and approached his brothers who sat at the front of the van. “Any luck finding out your one-eyed man?”
“No.” Five whispered, internally groaning at the fact he even trusted his idiot of a brother with the secret of the apocalypse.
“What’s he talking about?” Luther brought up with a raised brow.
“Does it matter? It’s Klaus.” The boy quickly shot down.
At first, Klaus looked hurt but, he redirected his gaze to the larger male as though silently asking Luther to defend him but, nothing came out of Spaceboy's mouth. Defeated, the seance breathed through his nose and acted as though he wasn't hurt. Out of pity, you rubbed his back.
The small brunette sighed, “What do you want, Luther?”
“So…” Dirty blond male cautiously glanced at you, “So, Grace may have something to do with Dad’s death.” He paused and glanced at you again trying to read if you have a reaction. “I need you to come back to the academy, all right? It’s important.”
"Is something on my face?" You asked yourself as you started to feel your face if there was a bloodstain you forgot to wipe away from Five's wounds.
“It’s important.” Five mocked his brother’s words then scoffed. “You have no concept of what’s important.”
“Hey!” Klaus interrupted, “Did I ever tell you guys about the time I waxed my ass with chocolate pudding?”
The lanky man laughed his stomach out, sadly, the others weren't laughing along with him. “It was so painful!”
Luther and Five grimaced at their brother's words, while you looked at the seance as though he had committed a sin. Despite everyone's obvious disgust, someone else - besides Klaus - managed to laugh because of his shenanigans, it was Five. You witnessed the boy turn his head then hid his giggle underneath his breath. It was oddly adorable.
“What are you still doing here?” The larger man scrunched up his brows, his gaze on Klaus.
“I- What? I need an excuse to hang out with my family?” Klaus placed a hand on his chest, offended by the other male's choice of words.
“We’re trying to have a serious conversation here.”
“What, and I’m incapable of being serious? Is that what you’re saying?”
At this point, you couldn't help but frown and feel bad for Klaus. No one in the family took him seriously just like how they treated Vanya. He acts as though he isn't bothered but, you know it hurts him, just as much as how the others treated Vanya differently.
“Luther’s got a point, you should get out.” Five added.
“What?!"
Reluctantly, the lanky man crawls out of the van murmuring how it was unfair. Once he got out of the van, he screamed “FINE!” then slammed the door closed.
"I- I should go after Master Klaus…" You said quietly then followed Klaus to the convenience store. You had a feeling he'd cause trouble and it would be best someone would be there to prevent it.
Once you and Klaus left, the atmosphere in the van became tense. The unspoken rivalry, rather, the one sided rivalry between Luther and Five was becoming more evident to the naked eye. Since you left, Luther felt like he could finally bring up his suspicion of you to Five.
“What the hell are you up to?” Luther questioned whilst he observed the seance and the servant head to the convenience store together.
“You wouldn’t understand.” The younger male stated, his eyes narrowing at the prosthetics building across them.
“Try me. Last I checked, I’m still the leader of this family.”
“Well, last I checked. I’m 18 years older than you.”
The larger man inhaled deeply then turned to his 'younger' brother. “You know what your problem is?”
“Really hoping you’ll tell me.” Five sarcastically remarked, his hazel eyes never leaving the building across the van.
“You think you’re better than us. You always have. Even when we were kids. But the truth is, you’re just as messed up as the rest of us. We’re all you have and you know it.”
The brunette lets out a dejected sigh. “I don’t think I’m better than you, Number One. I know I am.”
Spaceboy chuckled at his words, Five just proved his point.
“I’ve done unimaginable things, things you couldn’t even comprehend.” the boy pointed out as his grip on the steering wheel tightened but it came off as an exaggeration to Luther, “Right…”
“Just to get back here and save you all.” Five added.
Unexpectedly, the convenience store from across the street was experiencing a commotion, catching the passersby's attention along with Five and Luther's. Out came Klaus carrying a huge amount of food in his arms followed by the security guard screaming for him to halt.
“Whoa!” The seance runs with the food he shoplifted as the security ran after him.
One of the security guards screamed with a baton in hand. “Stop!”
“Hey! Stop right now!”
The lanky man waves at the van, some of the food he stole fell behind. Due to his carelessness, he almost gets run over by a taxi, luckily it stopped halfway, though he managed to narrowly dodge the vehicle.
As for you, you were held back at the convenience store as you paid for the food your master shoplifted. You internally grumbled about regretting ever feeling pity for him and how you should have known he would have pulled a stunt like this.
After that whole fiasco, Luther was about to leave the van until he remembered something he had been planning to tell Five once you weren't around.
"Since you don't plan on showing up to the family meeting, I'll give you a heads up, Y/N might have something to do with dad's death." Luther said, his back against the boy.
Five's eyes widened and his grip on the steering wheel tightened as the puzzles in his head began to fall into pieces. "You have nothing to worry about. I've dealt with people like her."

Luther and Allison gathered every family member in the living room, except Five since he was being stubborn. The monitor that he and Allison were playing with last night, currently sat on the bar, the video tape already in it. All he needed to do was play the footage…
The large male took in a deep breath then played it. The monitor replayed the night of the murder, Grace was taking care of the Monocle's needs, suddenly he started twitching and fell on his back, amidst him experiencing a heart attack, Ms. Grace did nothing but look down at him instead of doing what she was programmed to do.
The whole room went silent, Luther observed the other's reactions and noticed that only Vanya and Klaus were mortified. Number one expected that he and Allison were the only ones who wouldn't be surprised but you and Diego didn't seem surprised by the footage. Diego seemed a little too satisfied whilst you looked away from the monitor.
The dirty blond male narrowed his brows, "Suspicious."
“I mean, do you really think that mom would hurt Dad?”, Vanya broke the silence.
“You haven’t been home in a long time, Vanya. Maybe you don’t know Grace anymore.”
“If he was poisoned, it would have shown up in the coroner’s report.” Diego remarked with a matter of factly tone.
“Well, I don’t need a report to tell me what I can see with my own eyes.”
“Maybe all that low gravity in space messed with your head.” The lad in black leather approached the monitor and replayed the footage. “Dad has his monocle. Grace stands up. Monocle’s gone.”
Klaus laughed, “Oh, yeah!”
The Latino turns his back, “She wasn’t poisoning him. She was… taking the monocle, to clean it.”
“Then where is it?”
Everyone went silent not having an answer to that question. You, even as an accomplice, didn't even know where it was. You were pretty sure disposing of the monocle was not part of the plan…
“No, I’ve searched the whole house, including her things. She doesn’t have it.”
The kraken looked down as he took out his knife and fidgeted with it, till his eyes met Luther's. “That’s because I took it from her. After the funeral.”
“You’ve had the monocle this whole time? What the hell, Diego!” Allison exclaimed.
“Give it to me.” Luther commanded, taking a few strides towards Diego, his hand out awaiting for the monocle to be returned.
“I threw it away.”
The rumor scoffed at her brother's admission.
“You what? ” Number one’s voice boomed.
“Look, I knew that if you found it on Mom, you’d lose your shit. Just like you are doing right now.” The latino menacingly pointed at Spaceboy's direction with the pointed edge of his dagger.
“Diego, you son of a bitch.” Luther walks over to Number two but Vanya interrupts him before another fight starts, you mirror her actions as well and walk in front of Diego to prevent him from doing anything reckless.
“Hey. no. calm down.” Vanya said, “Look, I know dad wasn’t exactly an open book. But, I do remember one thing. He said Mom was, well, designed to be a caretaker but also as a protector.”
“Well, if her hardware is degrading, then… We need to turn her off.”
"Oh no." You thought. This was definitely not part of Mr. Hargreeves' plan.
“Whoa, whoa, whoa, wait. She’s not just a vacuum you can throw into a closet. She feels things, I’ve seen it.” The kraken angrily said as his glare hardened, along with the finger pointing becoming more abundant.
“She stood there, and watched our father die.” The dirty blond male pointed out as he gestured to the footage.
“I’m with Luther.”
“Surprise, surprise.” Diego sarcastically retorted.
“Shut up.” The rumor barked back.
Suddenly, the whole room looked at Vanya, expecting an answer out of her. “I- I don't-”
"Yeah, she shouldn't get a vote." Diego interrupted her before she could decide but Vanya snapped back at him. "I was gonna say that I agree with you."
"Okay. She should get a vote."
The Latino turned to Klaus, "What about you, stoner boy? What are you thinking?"
"Oh, so, what? Do you need my help now? Oh 'Get out of the van, Klaus!', 'Well, welcome back to the van.' -
"What van?" The woman in curls interjected, not following through with this whole van thing. Fortunately for her, she wasn't alone as Vanya didn't know what the van metaphor was for.
The large male released a sigh and changed the topic, "What's it gonna be Klaus?"
“I’m with Diego because screw you Luther! And if Ben were here, he'd agree with me." The lanky man replied while looking Luther in the eye, as though to intimidate him.
"So, that's three to two."
"Vote's not final yet." The actress stated which caused the whole room to raise eyebrows.
"What?"
"Five's not here." She pointed out. You could hear everyone - except Luther who was silently thanking her - internally groan at her words. At this point, she was just stalling!
The lad in black leather scoffed and then argued, "You really think Five would show up to something as stupid as this?"
"Why don't we just let Y/N vote for him?" Klaus suggested as he pushed you forward like a sacrificial lamb.
"Master Klaus, I'm afraid I can't do that-"
"She doesn't have a say in this." You stiffened at Luther's words, "I don't like the sound of that."
"What the hell is that supposed to mean? That she is not one of us? She is treated like an experiment and got traumatized because of that bastard! How is she any different from us?" Diego fought back on your steed, while you looked at him like he had grown another head.
"Because we-"
"Just you, Luther." Allison corrected, looking away from the scene before her.
"I think she might be an accomplice in Dad's death." The larger male finished her sentence which made the living room feel unwelcoming as dead silence followed.
The Latino scoffed then taunted the big man, "I'm surprised your mouth hasn't retired from carrying all that shit your ass couldn't handle."
"And here we go again." The rumor muttered under her breath.
Luther ignored his brother's taunts and began providing arguments, "During dad's funeral, Y/N was supposed to check on the footage and report to me if there was anything suspicious but she didn't inform me."
"That's because I was with Five, I'm supposed to be watching over him in case the effects of time traveling were kicking in." You hurriedly replied which unknowingly raised suspicion in Luther's eyes.
"Didn't you and Pogo switch shifts whilst monitoring the CCTVs?"
"Yes but, I didn't have time to check on the tapes-"
"You didn't have time yet the tape was conveniently placed on top of the cabinet." The dirty blond male pointed out, your eyes widened in fear because you didn't know how to defend yourself… You felt helpless.
You were well aware that you were not the one who placed the tape there, so it could have been Pogo. As much as you would love to defend yourself, you couldn't exactly speak out either since this would ruin the plan but you were itching to stand up for yourself. In the end, you sucked it up and didn't say a word.
"You even told me that I should 'broaden your scope, especially your list of suspects'. " Luther's eyes felt like lasers being burned through your skull.
You gulped, looking down at your feet as your tears were ready to cascade down your cheeks. You even regretted leaving those clues for him because you didn't think you would be put into this position, "I- I was… I was trying to cheer you up…"
"Is that the only excuse you can come up with?" Luther scoffed, he almost sounded like his father… It scares you.
"Vanya, please keep an eye on Y/N for now." The larger male ordered the petite woman.
Desperately, you walked up to him, "I know it looks bad but, Can I at least attempt to get Five back? His decision might help finalize what to do with Ms. Grace."
"His decision won't save you."
At this point, you were trembling. The ringing in your ears became louder, your mind zoning out until you felt a hand on your shoulder, you turned to see it was Klaus wearing a reassuring smile though it didn't do much.
"That's enough Luther, you're scaring her." Allison finally stepped in.
The violinist approached your side cautiously then gently whispered, "Y/N, I believe it's best you listen to Luther for now."
"For now, let's wait for Five to return. The whole family has to vote. We owe each other that." The rumor ended the discussion and everyone began to part their ways.
Once Vanya finished conversing with Diego about Ms. Grace, she - gently - took you by your wrist and headed to your room. You were so busy in your head that you didn't realize that Vanya was the one taking you to your room.
The violinist wore a concerned look on her face, "Hey, Y/N, you alright? You seem so out of it? It's very unusual for you… I'm assuming you are bothered by what Luther said? You looked like you were about to cry earlier."
"I'm not bothered, just worried about Five. I was supposed to be by his side but I ended up getting house arrest instead." You answered jokingly but you could not bring yourself to fake a smile.
Vanya laughed, not noticing that your energy didn't match your tone. "If it helps, I don't think you would kill dad."
"You wouldn't know that…" You wanted to say that but kept it to yourself.
"So don't beat yourself up over this, if you're innocent you have nothing to lose."
You briefly replied with a fake smile, "Yeah. Thanks."
The petite brunette noticed the brief reply but shrugged it off then changed topics. "So, I've heard from the others that you and Five have been hanging out, is that true?"
You nodded.
"I didn't think he'd open up to you… with how he openly hates you and all- Not saying that it's a bad thing that you guys are getting along now! It's just… unexpected is all."
You relaxed for a bit and chuckled. You knew for a fact neither of you guys were getting along. At most, you guys were just tolerating each other because you all saw how you guys benefited from each other.
"That's one way of putting it." You murmured.
You and Vanya arrived in your room and sat on your bed. In sync, you guys laid down on your backs and stared at the ceiling above you guys.
"So how's Five doing?" The brunette questioned, probably worried about his mental state considering what happened the day before… or was it earlier?
"Well, from what I can tell, he's getting used to people…" you answered, trying to evade the topic of the apocalypse when answering her question.
Vanya exhaled through her nostrils, "I really should have insisted for him to get help."
"I understand your concern Miss Vanya but, you can't help someone who doesn't recognize they need help. You would only be wasting your energy."
"I'm sorry," She murmured, a habit of hers that she never got over.
You smiled then added, "You have nothing to be sorry about, you're just doing what you think is right."
"Y/N can I ask you something?"
You nodded giving her the go signal.
"Why would you try to comfort Luther by advising him to look into other people as well?"
You froze up. You couldn't lie to Vanya, something was telling you that you couldn't go against someone's orders. "I can't-"
Unexpectedly, a myriad of gunshots were coming from the hallway.
"Hide!" You shouted, before Vanya could protest, you urgently hid her in your closet as you hid under the bed.
Once the sound of gunshots and blades clanking simmered down, you got out of your hiding spot and readied your retractable bo staff. Vanya got out of the closet as well once she heard you got out of your hiding spot.
"Miss Vanya, I will be heading out to assist the others," You grabbed a ballistic shield you have been hiding behind the closet, "I'll be giving you this ballistic shield for your protection. Please don't make any sound."
"Wait, Y/N you shouldn't-" Number seven grabbed your wrist in an attempt to stop you but the determined look on your face made her grip loosen.
"I have to Miss Vanya, I'm sorry. It's my responsibility to protect you- I mean, protect the academy. I can't just stand by and watch them throw away their lives like that."
Vanya was left speechless with your words. You did not outright say anything about her being ordinary or not having powers but, it felt like the term "responsibility" became synonymous with the word “power”. It made her think that she didn't have the power to protect others nor herself, that's why other people had to get themselves hurt to protect her.
"Remember, do not open the door for anyone even if you know it's someone you think you can trust; We don't know what the intruder is capable of, so trust no one. I will let you know if the coast is clear so keep a lookout for my messages." You told her then left your room, unknowingly leaving Vanya to her thoughts.
You cautiously surveyed the hallway, you held the bo staff's body with high alert including your other senses actively looking for the intruders that entered the academy. When you reached the stairs, you witnessed Diego and Allison simultaneously attacking a familiar pink masked person. You were about to jump into the action until you heard Vanya's voice from the living room.
ㅤㅤㅤ❲ T H E ☕ S E R V A N T ❳
"Hello?" Vanya went down the stairs, worry in her voice and facial features.
"Guys? Is everyone okay?"
"Hello? Guys?" She entered the living room unaware of the danger emanating from the lounge.
Once the violinist entered the room she tried to look for any signs of life but only saw the result of the fight, which was gun residue and bullet casings littering the area. As she was about to leave and investigate the other rooms, she heard chains rattling behind her.
The petite woman turned and was met with the intruder who wore a blue cartoony mask, who was wielding a morning star. He swung it towards Vanya but she ducked just in time. As he was about to hit her with his arm, a two-pronged spear stopped him midway, which created a distance between Vanya and the intruder.
The spear was a surprise to everyone in the living room except you, they turned their gaze and met your hues. Once the masked man's attention was set on you, Vanya quickly hid not wanting to be a liability.
"If you're looking for someone to fight, at least pick someone who can fight." You taunted the larger man.
With ease, you jumped from the second floor then dash towards the masked man, using the momentum you've picked up, you raised your foot and pushed kick his torso away. The impact made him stumble backwards and pause as he tried to gather his footing.
The spear that you threw at him earlier is now in your hands, you pressed the button that would retract the prongs and swung it towards the mask - his head was your main target - which made him stagger back again.
"This brat is too quick, I should've left her with Cha cha." Hazel grumbled to himself.
Despite the obvious large distance, you cautiously took a few steps backwards and used the staff as a boundary. An open hand supporting the head of the bo staff whilst a closed fist on the butt of the staff holding onto it with a strong grip.
Seeing as the double attack to his head was making him fall behind, you quickly withdrew from your defensive stance then, taunted the masked man by spinning your bo staff. Once he regained his footing, he swung the ball of spikes onto the body of the staff, so it would fall apart.
However, you decided to take a gamble and retract it. You dashed forward to tackle him but, due to the frame and weight differences, your attack didn't affect him. Unknown to him, this was all part of your plan, this was the distance you needed for your next move. You made the staff face upwards then unretracted it which propelled his chin thus leading him to fall backwards.
By now he was outside the living room, you were out of breath and so the masked man. Your main objective was achieved, Vanya wasn't within his reach but, you were not sure if you could hold him off any longer.
"Hey, asshole." Luther greeted. Despite what he did to you earlier, you were thankful for his presence.
"Y/N go look for Pogo and Grace!"
You nodded and headed off to where you usually see Pogo and Grace. Once you have met up with the advanced chimpanzee you guided him to the basement and reassured him that everything was under control. You were planning to go out and look for Grace this time but, curiosity got the better of you.
"Did you hire those people?" You questioned as your grip on the retractable bo staff tightening.
"Master Hargreeves never hired an outside party to get involved… It must be someone who knows what he is planning, or people after his fortune." He replied but you were not satisfied with his answer, it was evident on your face.
You scoffed then exclaimed, "What the hell is he planning?! Vanya almost got killed out there!"
"I'm afraid I can't tell you. Master Hargreeves made me swear to not speak of it, unless the truth is finally revealed to the whole academy."
You were livid but walked away from him with a huff, to go look for Ms. Grace. At this point, you have given up on trying to find out the truth. Even though you were one of the Monocle's loyal servants, he treated you like the other numbers and kept you in the dark despite his hesitancy to trust you, he gave you little to no information, so you would be left to figure it out yourself.
Tumblr media
Once you received Vanya's text, you went out of the basement and surveyed the house if there were lingering intruders. Suddenly, you ran to where you heard the crash come from and saw a fallen chandelier along with the other numbers who looked like they were still processing what they witnessed.
"What happened?" You broke the silence, it seemed like they were hesitant to answer but Allison managed to speak. "A chandelier fell on Luther, please check on him."
You bowed to the rumor, as you were ready to leave Vanya, Allison and Diego to their own devices.
Suddenly, the violinist's question made you freeze, "Who were those people?"
You were well aware that the question was not directed towards you but, the instinct - a rumor - told you to answer her but, then you saw Diego narrowing his eyes at you, as though silently questioning why you haven't left. You tightened your lips into a line then silently went to the clinic to prep for Luther's wounds.

would it be fair to request a sequel for in another life (god this concept is so brilliant it needs its own book)
in another life (part two) ☆ ben hargreeves
Tumblr media
genre: semi-angst to fluff warnings: mentions of past fights summary: after reuniting with ben, you two work out the issues that have been burdening you since you lost each other. notes: it's the long awaited part two! if you haven't read part one, you can find it here :)
"they're all dickheads." diego chimed in, five cutting in and saying something about a throat punch, but you weren't listening.
you were dragged out of the academy by klaus, looking over your shoulder to find ben looking at you with an unreadable expression on his face.
"yeah, well, ben is still the same in some ways." klaus said, and you felt all of the siblings' eyes shift to you.
"he still seems like an asshole." you replied quietly, shrinking under their gazes.
"maybe you're our in." diego said, and the attention shifted to him and he launched into a spiel about a lengthy plan of you going back to the sparrow academy and begging for ben to take you back so that the umbrellas could infiltrate their previous home.
"i'm not going to use ben like that." you protested, seeing the obvious irritation on diego's face.
"but he's not our ben. he's stuck up, he's rude, he's a dickhead-"
"okay, that's enough. we should find somewhere to stay." viktor cut in, and you were thankful for his words.
you trailed behind the siblings, feeling like the odd one out now more than ever. even if they didn't say it, the looks they gave you when you refused to carry out diego's plan were enough of an indicator to their disdain.
as you walked, you noticed that an increasing number of crows were circling overhead.
nervousness crept into your veins as you remembered fei, their number three, and their crows that had attacked you, allison, and luther.
you tried to tell yourself that it was just a coincidence, but as the crows began to make their way towards you, you realized they were there for you.
"i don't want any trouble." you spoke, putting your hands up in surrender as one of the birds landed at your feet.
"then we won't give you any."
you whirled around at the familiar voice, stomach dropping into your shoes as ben, fei, and sloane came to a stop in front of you.
"what do you want? i promise i'm not going to try to fight you or anything, i just want to take a nap." you mumbled wearily as the three shared a look, one that you didn't understand.
"you can take a nap at the sparrow academy." sloane said cheerily, and you quirked an eyebrow.
"i really should get going, my friends are-"
"nowhere to be seen." fei cut in, and you turned back around to see their figures far off in the distance.
fuck.
"why do you want me to go with you?" you asked, wrapping your arms around yourself as you waited expectantly for an answer.
"i think you and i need to have a long overdue conversation." ben replied after a beat of silence, staring at you in complete seriousness.
you weighed your options. considering the siblings hadn't questioned where you were and come looking for you, you were probably on your own.
but did you want to go back to the sparrow academy with seven people who could easily hand your ass to you again?
"fine. i'll go back with you."
the drive to the academy was short, but you didn't even notice.
all of the emotions that you had buried when ben died were coming back to haunt you. here he was, in the flesh, ushering you into his house with his hand on the small of your back like no time had passed at all.
"i'll take you to the medical wing so you can get patched up." he said, and you mumbled something back in acknowledgement.
your body felt heavy as you sat on the examination table, the sound of ben rustling through medicine cabinets filling the air.
the two of you said nothing as he began to clean the dried blood from your face, injuries from the fight with lila in the sixties as well as the one mere moments ago with the sparrows.
"how did i die in this timeline?" you broke the silence, noticing that ben halted his movements in cleaning a cut on your neck.
"how did i die in your timeline?" he asked, and you shook your head.
"i asked first." you shot back, feeling dread settle in your stomach as ben dropped the rag he was working with, rubbing a hand over his face.
"you...were taken. taken hostage, by a villain." he said, and you had to bite back a snarky remark about how that sounded like the plot of a shitty superhero movie. "we couldn't save you."
you processed his words, them meaning little to you. i mean, you were fine, right? there was still a lot to unpack from the sixties that you would probably have to think about at some point, but in the current moment, you weren't dead and there wasn't impending doom anymore.
"what about me?" ben asked, breaking the thoughts that were racing in your mind.
"nobody has ever told me the full story, or what exactly happened. i just know you died on a mission, when we were sixteen." you explained quickly, feeling a familiar lump form in your throat.
"when we were sixteen?" he asked softly, and you nodded, moving over a bit so that ben could sit next to you.
"am i different than your ben?" he asked, voice so weak you could've sobbed.
you wanted to scream that yes, he was different than your ben, that your ben was kind, sweet, caring, and so loving, and he was always by your side with a joke when you were sad, or a kiss to the temple when you were stressed-
"kind of. my ben... he was the best part of growing up." is what you settled on finally, feeling the man next to you tense his shoulders.
"could i- could i ever be him?" he asked, and your brows furrowed. you turned to face him fully, and he reciprocated your movements.
"you are him. the same dna, the same face, whatever." you urged, studying his face intently.
"okay, well if i am the same, where does this leave us? what are we?"
his words echoed in your mind, and you opened and closed your mouth.
"do you still love me?" you breathed out, feeling lightheaded as ben stared at you, gently taking your hand in his.
"i still love you." he confirmed, a sad smile finding its way to his lips. "do you still love me?"
you could only nod, verbal confirmation lodging itself in your throat.
"then i guess that settles it." he said, and you let out a small laugh at his awkwardness. it reminded you of your ben.
but now, this ben, sparrow ben, was your ben.
"i'm glad to have you back." you said softly, shifting so that your head rested on his shoulder, hands still laced together.
"me too." he murmured, pressing a kiss to your temple. the action was so gentle that a single tear slid down your cheek, dripping onto your arm.
"ben, can you promise me one thing?"
"of course."
"never let me go."
"i wouldn't dream of it."

Note
I have never requested something but I think you are writing is so good!
Would you do prompt 2 “wait a minute, are you jealous?” with sparrow!Ben Hargreeves, thank you <3
Familiar
Pairing: sparrow!ben hargreeves x umbrella!reader
Warnings: Slight angst
Word Count: 762
Summary: Ben says just what’s on his mind, after getting drunk, right before the end of life as you know it.
A/N: I don’t even typically write anything close to angst, so this is fun. Reader is, as I tend to lean towards and prefer, neutral.
With the end of life as you know it rapidly approaching, what better way to spend it than getting shitfaced with your favorite brother before, during, and after a wedding. Or better yet, your favorite brother and your dead brother’s doppelgänger who’s honestly a dick.
You were all upstairs, trying to play pool in your drunken states and being far too giggly for your own good.
“That’s another point for me-“ Klaus held up his pool cue with one hand as he dramatically bowed “-and better yet another shot.” You watched as he grabbed for his bottle, and realizing it was empty he threw it to the side.
“I’ll be back kids, don’t do anything I would do.”
With that he stumbled his way through the staircase, slowly but surely descending.
You walked over to where Ben was sitting, flopping down beside him with a sigh. “God I love him.”
Ben tensed beside you, eyes watching you carefully as you laid your head back against the cushions.
“I don’t get why, I mean sure you all grew up together but he’s so…”
“Mental?” You finished, laughing a bit. “It’s a part of his charm.”
“Nothing charming about that.” He grumbled, and you could feel him fold his arms beside you.
To that you glanced at him. “Everyone has their own charm, Ben. I mean take our Ben for example, he was-“
“Amazing, spectacular, superb, apparently superior to me in every way possible, which in itself is impossible.” The words spilled out of his mouth far too easily for them to not have been on his mind. You snorted, clearly drunk Ben was an oversharer. “I was going to say a dickhead, the sweetest most caring-“
Ben let out a loud exaggerated sigh, rolling his eyes. “For fuck’s sake he couldn’t have been that great.”
“Oh but he was. He was all that and…” You trailed off, looking him in the face and realizing just how annoyed he really was. “Wait a minute, are you jealous?”
Ben’s eyes brows furrowed as he huffed. “What? No. Why would I be jealous of him, he’s dead. I’m not. It’s just…” He held his face in his hands now, breathing unevenly.
“It’s just…what?”
“Did you know we had you? Well, a different you, our own Y/N years ago.”
No, you didn’t know that. Is that why Sloane was so eager to befriend you from the get go? Or why the other sparrows had all looked at you that way when you first appeared, Jesus.
Ben shook his head and continued. “Well we did, and you’re so much like them, but at the same time you’re nothing like them. It’s scary, watching you with the umbrella’s and knowing that could’ve been us, could’ve been me next to you,” Finally, he looked up, and you could see his eyes tearing up. The way he watched you in both awe and grieving, you could see everything he’d been hiding for the last few days.
“I just miss you so much when you’re with them, so much that it hurts.” His fingers brushed your cheek shakily, like he didn’t know what to do, like he was scared of what he might do.
“Were we close?” You said almost breathlessly, watching as he stared at you, taking in every little feature of yours.
“More than you’ll ever know.”
And with that he leaned in, pressing his lips against yours. You could taste the alcohol in his breath but you didn’t care, you couldn’t care. Not when he was pulling you into him, holding you like you were going to disappear the second his grip slipped. Kissing you in a way that told you everything he felt, every emotion he’d left unsaid over the years, every feeling and sensation overwhelmed the two of you, but neither of you wanted to pull away.
It hurt. It hurt your heart as he grasped onto you desperately, hurt your head when you realized just how tangled you’d become with each other, you burned for each other.
When you finally pulled apart you didn’t pull away, and neither did he. You just sat in silence, terrified that the slightest of moves would make the other disappear and you’d be alone again.
“Holy shit.”
And just like that the two of your heads snapped to Klaus, standing beside the pool table and holding two more bottles, you pulled yourselves apart just as quickly as you’d settled into the position, you could still feel the goosebumps on your arms as you held them against yourself.
Holy shit indeed.
