Iori Kanzaki ft. Soraru and Lon- Irreversible Chronostasis (Fukagyaku Chronostasis / 不可逆のクロノスタシス) English Lyrics
Presented by Studio Guiana, this song is also accompanied by an online novel. I’m SO SO happy to see Soraru and Lon singing together again!!! Feels like balance has finally been restored to the universe 🙌
色のない世界の底から
さあもう起き上がる時間だ
偽物の命を抱えて
映えわたる景色の向こうへ
From the depths of this colorless world
Come! It’s time for us to rise up
Burdened with this false life
Let us travel beyond the landscape on our screens
ここからは仮初の人生
それでも確かにある夕景
夜が来たら命をベット
気を抜けばすぐに負け犬のルール
Everything from here is but a temporary life
Yet there’s no doubting the sun’s warm evening glow
Gambling with our lives once the night comes
If we let our guard down, we immediately abide by the losers’ rules
星を探し歩く狩人
ロマンも生きるための商売
いつかは目指す艇の塔へ
今はその日暮らしで歩くアバター
A hunter tracking down the stars
A trade that pays the bills and delivers dreamlike thrills
Towards the Skiff Spire we’ll aim for someday
This avatar walks, dawn to dusk
茜色に染まる街の音
すれ違う獣の気配に
君と目が重なるその時
心臓が何かを悟った
Bustle from the crimson-dyed town
Nestled among the presence of passing beasts
The moment I laid eyes on you
My heart realized something
ノイズ混じりな画面越しの君の目で
世界は狂う
On the other side of the noise-riddled screen, your eyes
Made my world snap
体も全て心も全て
傷つくと知って博打をする
獣のように生きる電子の
頭上を舞う無垢な流れ星
もう止まれない
With all my heart and soul, all the fire in my bones
I don’t care if I’m hurtー I’ll still roll the dice
Electrons living like beasts,
Innocent shooting stars dance above my head
There’s no stopping me anymore
信号の世界の底から
さあもう目を覚ます時間だ
本物の命と信じて
満月の夜空の向こうへ
From the depths of this signal world
Come! It’s time for us to wake up
Believing this to be a real life
We travel beyond the night sky and full moon
皆自我を持って生きてる
毎日を必死で生きてる
匂いも味もある
その裏で誰もが当然と知るゲーム
Everyone’s living, possessing a sense of self
Every day we’re living, frantically, with desperation
We smell, we taste
But behind the scenes, everyone knows this is obviously a game
君の顔が目に焼き付いた
その日から何かが狂った
確かにあるこの感触の
全てに不安と違和感があった
Your face is seared into my mind
Ever since that day, something inside me snapped
I couldn’t doubt the sensation
It made me feel unsure, unsteady about everything
現実と仮初の合間
世界を行き来して気づいた
僕らはまだ目覚めていない
満月は今でも繰り返してる
In the realm between reality and temporality
I realized it, coming and going between worlds
We’re still not awake
The full moon keeps repeating
ノイズ混じりな記憶の底で
君の笑顔が響いた
From the depths of my noise-riddled memories
Your laughter resounded
体も全て記憶も全て
この出会いを待っていたみたいだ
朧げだった今までのこと
この炎が意味を呼び覚ますさ
もう止まれない
With all the fire in my bones, every memory that I hold
Something tells me that I’ve been waiting for this reunion
Everything up until now has been nothing but a blur
These flames invoke my purpose
There’s no stopping me anymore
仄暗い夜の情景に
僕たちは世界を見ていた
君とならきっと大丈夫
君だけがただ気になっている
In the scene unraveling in the dim night
We watched the world
I’ll be alright as long as I’m with you
I only care about you
そんな夢を何度も見てた
透明になってく記憶の
奥にただ根付いていたのは
たった一つ君の姿だ
I’ve seen that dream countless times
In the depths of my fading memories
The only thing that’s taken root
Is you
君が誰なのか私は知っている
君が誰なのか僕は知っている
繰り返す世界の間で
何度でもすれ違っていた
I know who you are
I know who you are, too
In these repeating worlds
We’ve passed each other countless times
この世界の全てを守ろう
この世界の全てを話そう
さあ行こう明晰夢の向こうへ
本物の温もりの方へ
Let’s protect everything in this world
Let’s discuss everything in this world
Come! Let us travel beyond this lucid dream
To a real warmth
<台詞>
誰もが夢の住人でした
自分が学園都市「モルフェ」に通う学生と信じて疑わない数千人の中から
誰か一人でもいい
僕は見つけ出さなければならなかった
あなたがその一人です、アルト
どうして…どうして、私を
Dialogue:
Everyone was an inhabitant of a dream.
Out of the thousands of students who believed they were attending the city-school, “Morphe”,
I had to find someone, anyone.
I just needed to find one of them.
And you are that person, Alto.
もう止まれない
もう止まれない
There’s no stopping us anymore
There’s no stopping us anymore
<台詞>
どうして…どうして、私を
Dialogue:
Why… Why me?
もう止まれない
もう止まれない
There’s no stopping us anymore
There’s no stopping us anymore
眠る体も揺らぐ心も
さよならをするなら今なんだ
これでいいんだ
ここに来たんだ
君とじゃなきゃ意味はないからさ
This slumbering body, this shaken soul
If we have to say goodbye, then now's the time
It’s ok
We’ve come this far
Nothing matters if I’m not with you
体も全て心も全て
傷つくと知って手を伸ばした
確かにあの日あの時君と
目があって世界が狂ってから
煌き出した
物語が
With all my heart and soul, all the fire in my bones
I don’t care if I’m hurtー I held out my hand
There’s no doubt that on that day, that moment my eyes
Met with yours, my world snapped
And our story
Started sparkling
仮初の世界は終わりだ
もう一度あの闇の方へ
もう一度心を揃えて
あの夜に名前を付けるなら
It’s the end of this temporary world
One more time, we’ll travel towards the darkness
One more time, we’ll align our hearts
And if we were to give a name to that night, we’d call it-

Taylor x Reader
TW: None
Content: GN!Reader, Movie Mentioned: Hush 2016, Netflix
Word Count: 925
Summary: What if Taylor did try confessing just before you went into Gallagher Mansion and it flew over your head?
18+ Readers ONLY - Minors Do NOT Interact! Minors/Ageless Blogs will be Blocked!!!
 I Do NOT give any permission for my work to be Reposted, Translated, or used with AI in ANY Capacity!!!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You and Taylor meet bright and early as usual, hanging out before both of your 10 am classes had become a delightful ritual. Typically you would spend 2 hours in a private study room, that you would reserve at the beginning of each week.
“Hey bud!” Taylor calls as he comes into the private study room you had reserved in the library. He slips into the chair across from you at the small table. “Sorry, I’m a bit late.” He said with a soft apologetic smile. You could see the sleep in his eyes still, he must have missed his alarm again and came straight here after waking up.
You smile kindly back, “No- it’s ok, I only just got settled a couple minutes before you got in”. You notice a soft pink spread across Taylors' cheeks before he nods and looks away. He starts pulling out his laptop and notebooks so that the pair of you can start working quietly.
Most mornings were spent like this, a quiet individual study together. It was always a comfortable silence and rarely accompanied by discussions unless one of you had a test to study for that day. The only time the pair of you actively spoke about anything most days was around 30 minutes before you two would have to leave to class. You would pack away your things and just chat and banter about your recent favorite shows or games. A lot of times Taylor would ramble about a new horror story he heard or scary movie trailer he saw.
And so the pair of you quietly study together, occasionally casting soft looks to each other, Taylor getting clearly flustered every time you caught him looking over at you. The hour and a half of studying passes quickly and you sigh softly to break the silence and start to put your things away. Taylor perks up when he sees you packing and quickly follows suit.
“So, what’s been on your thoughts today? Found a new version of the Banshee story?” you asked playfully as a teasing smile lingers on your face.
“N-no..” he says softly, as he procrastinates replying while he puts his notebooks away. “I  uh, actually found a movie you might like?” He said awkwardly. “It's uh- a story about a deaf and mute woman who’s being attacked by a serial killer in her home?”
“Oh! Yeah, I heard about that one!! I think it looks so cool!” You say excitedly, slashers and thrillers were much more your style compared to the more paranormal-based horrors that Taylor enjoyed. Taylor smiles almost proudly.
“Well- I figured- I’d take you to see it when it comes out? I thought it’d be really cool to see it with someone really amazing like you…” He says nervously with pink cheeks. And as he continues it sounds almost like the words are tumbling out of his mouth before he is prepared to announce them. “B-because you know! I get really- scared- by thrillers and uh- you love them and- you make me-” he stops himself, fiddling with his fingers and taking a small calming breath. “You make me feel safe-..” he mumbles out with a shy smile.
You look him over with an excited grin “Don’t worry! I’ll protect you from any crazy killer who’d come after you!” You give a fake and playful determined and brave look, pounding your chest with your fist. And Taylor just looks at you with a deep blush on his face, the silence between you hangs almost heavy. But soon Taylor gives a soft amused chuckle, covering his mouth as he begins to cackle, covering his mouth with his hands. You join him quickly, dissolving into wheezing laughing fits while you both try not to be too loud.
“Ye-yeah! Of course, you would.” He says a sweet and overjoyed smile on his face. “So you’ll come with me to the movie?” He asks with a small tilt of his head.
“Yes of course!” You say gleefully “If you’re paying~” You tease with a grin.
“Ough!” he claps his hands over his heart “You only want me for my money!?” he joked back in a heartbroken voice. “And here I thought you just lo-liked me for me!” he said shyly as he corrected himself.
“Maybe it's both~” You tease again with a gentle laugh. Taylor moves to prop his head up on the table with his hand. You mimic him and give an exaggerated sigh, looking Taylor in the eye as you do. You stare at him for a few minutes, and noticing him getting a bit fidgety makes you smile bigger which makes him look away covering his mouth with his hand. Your gaze follows his, and the pair of you just watch the movement in the library through the window of the study room.  You both sit comfortably in the silence for a bit before you shift with a sigh to check the time.
“We should get going to class- we’re going to be late.” You say as you stand and pick up your bag. Taylor nods and follows suit. “You don’t have another test until next week right?” you ask him as the pair of you leave the room, locking the door behind you. You and Taylor continue your small talk as you walk and soon split ways to your separate classes. You continue the day as normal, but Taylor has trouble focusing in his classes as he runs through just how much he embarrassed himself in front of you.
hey! i don't know if you "do" asks, but they're open, so i thought i'd throw one in! You definitely don't have to respond, but you're the first person that comes to mind in regards to this question.
whether independent or not, i've always had a passion and love for animation, and i've just recently stumbled upon a story idea in my brain that i think would work best in an animated format.
however... i am a writer, and definitely NOT an artist. i've been trying to improve in that area, but all the showrunners i've seen are artists primarily and writers secondarily, or equally skilled in both disciplines. what would you recommend in this situation?
of course, don't feel pressured to answer at all, i just needed to dump my thoughts somewhere. thank you!
I don't think "artist" and "writer" are necessarily two separate disciplines. A lot of times what I as a sequential artist will do is initially write my script, then create the visuals around that script. If I'm making an animation, I may write the script, then board, then break down what needs to be done based on those boards and go from there. Other times the "writing" is more the editing. My Game Grumps Animated shorts were "written" by editing audio together until I felt like I could better visualize what I had in mind, then proceeded from there.
What you need are communication tools. If you're translating one aspect of your craft to another, then you need to communicate how that's done. You can't adequately do that as a writer if you don't have some understanding of how to translate the page to the screen. That doesn't mean you have to be an incredible artist, but it pays to pick up a pen and "write" with pictures. Then you know what it's like for the next person down the chain.
Your ability to render a flower as if it's a photograph is not necessary to the job of screenwriter, but if you don't know how to describe that flower so the visual artist can render it, you're going to have a hard time getting what's in your head into someone else's. In a sense, it's similar to the challenge of any writer speaking to their audience. But the imagination is made literal.
Study screenwriting. Study boards. Study the production process in general. Do you have an opportunity to do a small thing yourself, however humble? Maybe a comic with simple doodles? Do you have enough to afford a stipend to an artist to help you through some tougher spots, maybe teach you a few things along the way so you can assist them? You can jump into the deep end AND dip your toes at the same time. Nobody said you had to stop studying in order to make stuff. But you'll want to figure out how to communicate. No aspect of either craft (visual, literary, or otherwise) is divorced from that.
I read all of The Honest Life of a Game Studio and now I am obsessed do you have recs for anything like it.
I wish. I FUCKING WISH. but it’s really one of a kind. higefusa really just wrote mundane slice of life office drama with the level of detail that could only be provided by a gamer who has worked in the industry AND he threw in some life or death stakes as a treat. how often do we get an incredibly normal office worker stuck in time prison??? and it’s ONE ARC??? not often enough.
none of these are gonna be just like game-ya but in terms of romances with attention to detail for industry/niche fields… ok all of these are gonna be kind of weird so bear with me.
double section is a BL about an auditor for an insurance company and an insurance salesman, I wouldn’t necessarily give it a blanket rec but I liked how Passionate the main characters were about audits and workplace regulations. a lot of heated drama for the most normal office setting possible. in the author’s note the artist talks about interviewing health insurance salesmen.
ginmokusei is more of a conventional BL but it’s about a guy who inherited his grandpa’s tailor shop and an ex maître d who shows up and demands to help him before he goes bankrupt. there’s a little bit about branding and marketing and bank loans. what has Always Stayed With Me is when the love interest basically goes like ‘you’re using all these flashy ads and being really pushy with discounts. are you selling beef bowls.’ every time I pass a clothes shop that goes really flashy with the discount banners I think ‘are they selling beef bowls…’
panel x magic. okay I said it was going to be weird. so this yuri is about a recent graduate who applies for office jobs and ends up doing image editing for… I guess a brothel? it doesn’t go into critiques of the sex industry, but I thought it was interesting how it takes a really logistical perspective in terms of marketing, advertising, and image manipulation… one of the chapters has the main character going like ‘oh god I’m trying to edit this risqué photo by making the thighs thinner and giving the face a glow-up but I keep making the model look like a weird alien this looks like something from a photo booth’ and gets advice from her coworkers like ‘hey why don’t you look up makeup tutorials to get a sense of what to touch up.’ hasn’t been translated in a while but it kind of hits that… really in-depth look at the logistics of a job.
I think there’s more I’m not remembering at the moment, at one point I think sundry made a joke about rating office romances by how much office work is shown. there’s a couple ones that *kinda* fit but not really… wait. wait wait wait. WAIT. oh my god it has such a h•rny title. okay. so I’m being 100% sincere when I say that the main story for hammered and pounded is a BL with interesting office politics. it’s also incredibly h•rny, but game-ya gets pretty h•rny so whatever. but yeah there’s a whole subplot where the love interest, who works in sales, has actually always wanted to work in R&D, and it becomes A Whole Thing where the head of R&D is in conflict with the head of sales over whether or not a transfer is gonna happen and there’s no romance involved with the conflict it’s all office politics
and in a similar vein, to your right, you will see my boyfriend is about a guy who’s working as a tour guide in kyoto and at the artist talks about how she used to work as a tour guide. I think it’s fun, though I have my qualms. the main character does do studying about how to be an effective tour guide and goes from being like ‘ugh I’m saying all the facts but no one’s listening’ to ‘haha check out this extremely long name of the temple we’re about to see! make sure to remember it, it’ll be the password for getting off the bus ;D’
I have another category of vaguely similar vibes of genre bending mundane office work + fantastical situations
tokusatsu gagaga is a gen series that’s a BIG fave of mine, the main character is an OL who loves tokusatsu so she imagines a lot of scenarios with that sort of vibe. it’s not diagetic, but it’s really fun when it’s stuff like ‘I’M AT KARAOKE WITH MY COWORKERS BUT I CAN’T OUT MYSELF AS A TOKUSATSU OTAKU THIS IS JUST LIKE BEING ATTACKED BY A KARAOKE-THEMED MONSTER EMERJASON HELP ME!!!!’ the eng tl hasn’t been updated in a while but there’s a live action adaption that’s really good
magilumiere co. ltd. is a gen series that’s basically ‘what if magical girls were like… sanitation workers for monsters’ so it’s a lot of company logistics in a fantastical setting. I don’t think I got that far into it before getting distracted, but it was interesting (though perhaps overly generous/idealistic about start-ups as a concept).
fanfic writer questions
Thanks for the tag, @uhhhyaenbyjade!!
1- How many works do you have on AO3?
Sitting at 79, currently!
2. What's your total AO3 word count? 363,375
3. What fandoms do you write for?
Like, ever? Lots of them over the past twenty years, hahah. Currently it's mostly Horizon that's got me by the throat, but I've also put out a couple one-offs for Stray Gods and Control over the least year. Besides those, I'd say my main claims to clownery would be Legend of the Seeker and Warrior Nun. I'm also finally dipping my toes into the ATLA scene after missing the boat for way, way too long.
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
I'm gonna remix this question a little bit and pick the top one from my an amalgamation of my five most prominent/recent fandoms, since otherwise Warrior Nun dominates due to sheer fandom size-- 1- Because the Light Is Close (Warrior Nun) 2- The Weight of Us (Legend of the Seeker) 3- rest like you belong here. (Horizon) 4- brave this time (Stray Gods) 5- dream geometries (Control)
5. Do you respond to comments?
I do!!! Gotta lavish my genuine gratitude on you lovely, wonderful, amazing folks who take time out of your day to read and hype up my silly writing.
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
Oh hmmm. If we're talking recently (like, written since 2010) it's gotta be so i'll stay half away (Horizon). That comic, man. lmao. lol. OH! Or waiting through daybreak (Stray), because that cat game is an emotional wrecking ball
7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
TOO MANY OF THEM, LATELY? I feel like I need to dive back into a bittersweetness era, because wouggghh have my endings been tooth-rottingly sweet. Recently I'd pin this title on entering light (Horizon).
8. Do you get hate on fics?
Not directly on the fics or to my face, which is nice.
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
Hell yeah! Overwhelmingly sapphic, usually of the more esoteric variety re: language. Using sex as a character study is my passion.
10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?
Not in many, many moons have I written a crossover. And the only time I ever did, it was from two shows in the same universe, lmao.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not to my knowledge, thankfully!
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
For the first time recently, yes!!! So freakin cool! Check out this Mandarin translation of eye for eye, tooth for tooth (Control).
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Not a fic, but I gotta thank Meg for being my cowriter on Talanah's FOTH path!!!!
14. What's your all time favorite ship?
don't make me choose between Cara/Kahlan and Aloy/Talanah. please
15. What's a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
Sorry to that one early Warrior Nun fic I left hanging after a single chapter
16. What are your writing strengths?
Emotional immediacy, prose-craft, evocative syntax, lyricality
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
MY SPEED. OUGGHHHH. Also I am actively trying to get better at dialogue, along with location/setting descriptions
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
I'd tackle it if it fit the scope of the fic, and only with the guidance of someone fluent in said language!
19. First fandom you wrote for?
Written for and posted? The Xenosaga series at age 11, baybeeee. I wrote plenty before that without posting, however.
20. Favorite fic you've written?
This legitimately changes on the daily. It's impossible for me to choose, so I'll just toss out if you held yourself up to the light (Horizon) as today's contender.
No-pressure tags: @mehoymalloy @tjerra14 @finrays @sssammich @askweisswolf and anyone else who sees this and wants a go! Just tag me as your tagger!
hello, i just wanted to say i discovered your blog recently and i love it so much. i’m studying Japanese (i’m at a very amateur lvl) bc i really want to be able to understand manga in its proper context and nuance. as well as be able to read all the extra contents. bc i noticed in JJK fandom there really isn’t a lot of translators around (there’s 2 or 3 i can think of). and i keep wondering why that is, and i wanted to know your opinion about it?
i’m asking bc after reading your blog i got the sense that your passion for JJK deteriorated over time… and i also noticed some other Japanese users who had JJK fan accounts abandon them. personally i think Akutami is a great writer and still delivering exciting chapters, so i don’t think it’s bc of the story.
is it bc of the fans? i know i have been really tired of them on the non-Japanese side. when i told someone how off-putting s/t/s/g shippers are to Japanese JJK fans she wouldn’t believe me and got really hostile. but my gut feeling is like what you’ve shared on your blog. that their (Japanese fans) general feeling is that the behavior from them is too wild. still, she told me she would go ask a Japanese person herself lol…
sorry to bring something negative to your inbox. it’s hard for me to find other JJK fans online who aren’t like that. so i wanted to msg someone who maybe has similar feelings to me.
anyways thank you again for your blog and translations, i hope you have a good day and i hope JJK can be a sincerely enjoyable thing for you again.
Hi, anon.
i noticed in JJK fandom there really isn’t a lot of translators around (there’s 2 or 3 i can think of)
Yeah. Firstly, we actually have official english release now, which is nice, but it means that there's less need for fan translation of each chapter weekly. Another might be because jjk is harder to translate compared to other manga, with its convoluted explanations. there's also an incident where a "neutral" translator getting harassed by the shipping fandom. I don't think anyone doing translation want that particular drama.
your passion for JJK deteriorated over time
For me, any manga is usually more of a fancy fleeting interest. But I somehow I got too attached to jjk lol. My actual interest is gacha games. But I've been following jjk since 2019, even before the announcement for the 1st season of the anime - which means it's been 4 years for me in this fandom. Honestly the fandom only got very bad that I can't stand it the last year. Burned out with added bad fandom makes me less motivated taking care this blog, but I promise I'll try to keep some effort for this blog until the last chapter of the manga. Keeping my distance from the fandom is my way to keep up my interest now, ironically
Like I said in a few posts before this, there's no help for that side of fandom. I'm really too tired to care about them. Best we can do is block and ignore it. At least fix the behavior regarding leaks
Hey! I recently found your blog and was wondering if you have any knowledge about the translation career? I'm in my third year of an English literature bachelor and am strongly considering becoming a translator or doing something with (literary) translation because I really love languages! Do you have any knowledge or tips about the field of work? If not, that's fine! I figured I'd ask just in case <3
Hey! Thank you for reaching out :)
I just finished the taught portion of my MA in Translation Studies and I'm preparing for my PhD so I'm not technically a professional translator yet (I'm not being paid lol).
If you love translation and can imagine yourself translating as your day job I really recommend looking into a translation master's or diploma (depending on where you are). Some countries don't really have any regulations and just let anyone become a translator but I'm very critical of that. If you're in Europe or consider studying there, consider a European Master's in Translation.
When it comes to literary translation it's really difficult to get into but it isn't impossible. I met a literary translator recently actually. There's the Emerging Translators Network and specialised degrees. I'd still recommend to look into other fields to have a backup plan (examples include video game localisation, commercial translation, medical translation, legal translation, translation technology, terminology management, project management, audio description, subtitling, surtitling, dubbing).
Some more general advice:
Learn about translation technologies. Seriously. There's a lot of fear mongering about AI but to paraphrase a translator I talked to recently: computers won't take your job but someone who can use a computer better than you might.
Be aware of the ethics of translation. I'm not only talking about the texts your translating but the way you interact with the industry. Capitalism is... Bad and if you're beginner with little experience and no degree companies might try to hire you just so they can pay you less. At the same time, professional translators won't be able to get jobs and have to lower their rates to compete. That's one of the reasons we've been pushing for better associations and why I often try to convince people to get professional training before becoming a translator.
If you want to get some ethical practice to build up your portfolio consider volunteering to subtitle/translate TED talks or join Translators Without Borders. You can also translate fan works and things like that.
If you want to get some taster sessions in what a degree in translation would look like, I have a lot of resources on translation studies in a folder in my pinned post. There is a lot of information on basic theory, strategies, technologies, audio-visual translation (which is my speciality).
If you have more questions feel free to ask them :)
20 Fic Questions
Thanks for tagging me @angelosearch! I've tagged a lot of people recently, so instead of tagging anyone specifically I'll just leave this open for whoever's interested!
1. How many works do you have on AO3? 36!
2. What's your total AO3 word count? 67,772.
3. What fandoms do you write for? So many. I'd say Final Fantasy, Persona, and Fire Emblem are the big ones though. I'd like to write more Zelda soon!
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos? -"Nighttime Escapades" (219), "Maya and Tatsuya Offline" (104), "Link Visit's Sidon" (73), "Clumsy Frieren" (66), "A Port In a Storm" (64).
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not? Yes, always! I love reading them, and they make my day! :) Only exception is occasionally I'll get spam or something.
6. What's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? "From Up On Her Throne" Is my darkest fic so far. An Ultimecia character study, so not exactly uplifting lol.
7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? Most of what I write is happy or uplifting. One of my Frieren fics, "Anytime, Anywhere". Is probably my fluffiest happy one.
8. Do you get hate on fics? Almost never, only time was this person (or bot.) who kept posting bible verses on any fics with LGBT pairings. Was mostly annoying because the comments were so damn long it took forever to scroll down to the delete button lol.
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind? That's most of the fics I've written! At the moment though I'm gravitating away from it, kinda burned out.
10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written? No offense to anyone who likes them but I just really don't care for crossover fics for the most part, hahaha. The most I may do someday is like, a crossover between two FF games or something. Which barely counts in my book.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen? Not that I know of!
12. Have you ever had a fic translated? Yes!! I recently had my Apothecary Diaries fic, "Nighttime Escapades" translated into Russian. Still so happy about that!
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before? I haven't, closest I've had is a beta reader. I'd be open to trying it though!
14. What's your all-time favourite ship? Zelink or Cloti! Though I'll admit shipping isn't the primary reason I write fics.
15. What's a WIP you want to finish, but doubt you ever will? Too many to name honestly. I've written plenty of stuff I've never posted, most of what I've posted the past few months I've been back on Ao3 is stuff I wrote a while ago.
16. What are your writing strengths? The big picture part of writing is where I think I shine. Like establishing the main theme of my story, a character's central conflict, interesting broad ideas I want to explore, etc. I'm definitely a discovery writer mores than a planner.
17. What are your writing weaknesses? Honestly I struggle with stuff like descriptions, making a scene progress naturally, giving characters unique voices. All the stuff that's more nitty gritty, it doesn't come naturally to me. Oh, and plenty of grammatical mistakes.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic? I probably would try to avoid it! I only speak English and wouldn't want to just use google translate or something. So unless I know someone who speaks the language, I wouldn't include it.
19. First fandom you wrote for? I think Naruto on FFN years and years ago, or The Legend of Zelda.
20. Favourite fic you've ever written? It's very bold to claim since it's not far along at all, but already love "A Poisoned History."! Though "Maya and Tatsuya Offline" is my best smut fic, since I did a good job with writing the buildup.
Having been aboard a small vessel with a Scarovan aboard led me to picking up a lot on their body language, even read up on their culture. We got to know each other pretty well, we exchanged cultural dishes (with some substitutes so we both wouldn’t be shitting blood for the next week) and at this point I had learned their kind’s body language. We were hanging out in my quarters, naturally using my off-hours to get fucking baked with some ancient sitcoms playing on the tv while I had a bowl of some off-brand cheese flavored puff between my thighs. I glanced over at my friend, entirely sober, eye stalks swaying gently as their mandible brushed against their forelimbs.
“What’s bothering you?”
They hesitated, “I don’t wanna say.”
“C’mon, we’re friends.”
They thought for a moment, bioluminescent carapace thrumming in contemplation as they found the wording.
“Well it’s just that you humans act exactly like the 3rd Schreemar dynasty.”
I had dabbled in Scarovan history, I knew this was real life though and not some old book trying to predict the future, each planet had hundreds of hundreds of countries, some millions. Usually a planetary monoculture meant some bad shit had gone down recently. I studied M’luk’s country mostly, I was fascinated by the differences, the total alien nature of their civilization to me.
I had no idea what she was talking about.
“Hrm?” I threw another shitty cheese puff into my mouth, melting impact with my tongue.
“They were some ancient nickel-age empire, one of those big ‘we’re going to conquer the world’ civilizations. They made a bunch of movies and video games about them. Like, it might just be my translator but sometimes you’ll slip into some really archaic terminology like ‘pencil’ or ‘governor’, it makes you sound like a bunch of fantasy characters.” Her claws brushed together in an alien grin, maybe she was lying when she said her people were immune to this stuff.
I thought for a moment, fuck I was too high for this.
“W-what…?”
“Well it’s just that you’re all so stoic and war-like, there’s a few humans I’ve met that aren’t but they make being different like, their whole personality.”
I took a swig of the shitty off-brand soda I grabbed from the commissar and made a face, out of both confusion and how absolutely mid the soda tasted.
“Waddayamean war-like? kinda painting with a broad brush there, Mel.”
She growled, lights going bright from the bottom to the top of her back, a giggle by another name.
“Yeah that’s what I’m talking about, do you guys seriously still use brushes? Also like when I did research on your planet there were… so many wars.”
I leaned forward, a bit floaty from the space weed as I raised my voice a little, “W-wha ya mean??? We don’t have that many…”
“Ya’ll were literally naming them like they were sequels to movies. You made sequels to your wars. Who does that??”
I gulped as I tried to find my words, the growling and thrumming meant that my alien friend was definitely getting a contact high and laughing her ass off.
“B-bu-but…!”
“You had more than one war involving the entire planet.”
Flabbergasted I plopped back into the embrace of my bean bag chair, glassy eyes watching as some criminal comedians exchanged inane parables about heterosexual relationships.
“Damn, you right. You right.”
There was a long pause, focused on the television as the ancient New Yorker play continued.
“So um, did they also have a thing in like, twenny first century where a bunch of guys wanted to bring that back?”
“Oh just a bunch of teal couch potatoes that spent too much time online.”
My stomach lurched. Oh well, it was all in the past.
“Hey can you pass those crickets?”
She handed me the clear bag of dried insects, she garbled something the translator didn’t pick up.
“Yeah I can’t pronounce that, so I’m callin’ em crickets.”
Chapter 6: The Decay of Our Lives (#14)
After my exciting egg experiment featuring a number of completely random spices, there’s not much left to do but wander.
Tumblr media
Not towards the filing cabinet. Won’t do me any good now.
My boots are quiet on the carpet. I don’t pay attention to much else.
At least Apex Academy is well-equipped. Even barred from whatever’s outdoors, there’s plenty for me to do. In theory. In practice, it’s just hard getting invested in any options. Because we’ve been coming to these same places for a while now? Or does it just feel pointless? Reading all the books in the library won’t end this game. Taking up chalk art won’t get the sick and injured somewhere safe for treatment.
Tumblr media
It’s all just... existing.
Tumblr media
But existing is all I’m obligated to do.
Wish it wasn’t all I can do.
Tumblr media
No, there’s... something. There has to be. I just haven’t come up with it yet.
Wandering across the second floor, I hear voices. A girl and a guy, but I can’t guess at more details from here. No reason not to take a look.
Opening the door into the west wing is slightly more difficult without looking up at the handle, but not by much. The voices are more audible, but I’m not paying great attention. Easy to tell the girl isn’t Tsunyasha, though.
Tumblr media
Kanagi’s study hall door is ajar—not that it isn’t usually. Not a lot of voices coming out of it lately, though. Considering how few of us are in shape for sports and how busy Kanagi’s been playing nursemaid, that’s not surprising.
But she’s sure here now.
The swish-crunch of sand doesn’t do much to cover up her voice.
“...not like it was ever gonna be, like, fair, tho.”
The reply is a low enough rumble I still can’t make out the words. I draw closer, still staring at my boots as they move. A few smacks come from the study hall, but it’s not too hard to guess what that must be. Glad she found some time to practice. Since she’s been taking care of Mahavir...
Tumblr media
Wait, wasn’t that Mahavir’s voice?
He's been getting out more recently, but diving straight into sports seems excessive. Could just be watching Kanagi do drills, though.
Something scoops through sand with a swish, then crashes.
Tumblr media
“...”
There’s a moment’s total silence before Mahavir cries out in pain.
Tumblr media
“!”
My gaze snaps up, and i stop dragging my feet. My pulse twitches in my throat as I dart into the study hall.
I have to look down again.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“Ma—!”
I turn on Kanagi, who’s hurtling over to check on him, sand spraying in her wake. I try to help, or stay out of the way, or do something, but all I can see or smell or hear or anything is Mahavir lying there with blood on his head.
Tumblr media
“What happened?!”
Tumblr media
“He just, like, slipped, I dunno!”
She kneels by him, her shoulders hunched.
Tumblr media
“Dude, don’t look at me like I did this.”
Tumblr media
“Me—I wasn’t...”
Was I? Does part of me think that even Kanagi could be the next one to...
Tumblr media
“......”
We don’t have time for this.
I scuff my feet over to Mahavir, but it’s hard to focus on anything but the whoosh of blood in my ears. If he dies—If he’s dead—I—I—
I hear a groan.
Tumblr media
“Mahavir!”
He stirs, but I don’t think we want him getting up right now. The sand's lapped up his blood, so I can’t estimate how much he’s lost.
“Don’t get up!”
Don’t know if I said that, or Kanagi. Breathe. Just... breathe... He’ll be fine—it’s Mahavir. Even if a hit to the head could kill someone...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It’s... He wouldn’t...
Breathe.
The nurse’s office isn’t as far as it could be. Kanagi has no trouble hauling him over. She assures me multiple times that head wounds just bleed a lot and it doesn’t mean it’s “like, bad bad.” But still. But still.
We’re in the midst of treating him—translation, Kanagi is in the midst of treating him and I’m the guy standing on reserve until the doc says “scalpel”—when there’s a knock on the door. I look at every incorrect wall possible before managing to see who it is.
Aidan doesn’t attempt to enter, whether the issue is the doorway itself or the people inside.
Tumblr media
“Please explain the situation, if anyone is able.”
Tumblr media
“Iggy slipped.”
Well. That does pretty much explain it.
Tumblr media
“He’ll totally be fine, tho.”
Aidan nods slowly.
Tumblr media
“I assume there wouldn’t be sandy footprints outside, had this slip happened in his own room.”
I nod slowly, feeling like I must be betraying someone or other.
Tumblr media
“Kanagi’s study hall.”
Tumblr media
“And what was he doing there? I don’t suppose that entering the court was necessary for medicating his burns or anything of that sort.”
Tumblr media
“Dude, are you seriously asking?”
Tumblr media
“He was, like, playing me.”
Tumblr media
“Totes not the best game I’ve ever had, buuuut. It was, like, something.”
Tumblr media
“Something clearly too risky with his injuries—and you, Miss Yuukei, are also injured, in case you've forgotten!!”
Tumblr media
“There will be no playing of sports from this moment onward until we leave this place. Light exercise at most. We can’t afford more incidents with no way to obtain proper medical care.”
Tumblr media
“Wh—Then what do you expect me to do, dude?!”
Tumblr media
“Something else.”
Tumblr media
“I’m sure your schedule will be a bit fuller with tending to Mr. Attenborough after this.”
Kanagi slams her hands on the counter, rattling jars of cotton balls and ointments.
Tumblr media
“It’s totally been full enough!”
Tumblr media
“I know, like, three whole medicines from sports, dude! Why do I gotta do all the nurse-y crap when you got rid of the real nurse—”
Aidan winces, but his gaze holds firm.
Tumblr media
“—who I totally liked, by the way! Everybody liked her! How is this fair?!”
Tumblr media
“IT ISN’T FAIR!”
Tumblr media
“....”
Tumblr media
“It isn’t fair to you, it isn’t fair to Mister Attenborough, and it certainly isn’t fair to Miss Tanukihara.”
Tumblr media
“As to the proportion of that which is entirely my own fault, I am sorry. But apologies aren’t going to knit up any wounds, Miss Yuukei. And we don’t want anything worse to happen to Mister Attenborough. You like him, too, don’t you?”
Tumblr media
“......”
If she says something, it’s too quiet to hear. But this is Kanagi. Maybe she was just scrunching her mouth around for its own sake.
This might be the only lull we’re going to get, considering one of the speakers, so I step in while I can.
Tumblr media
“What if we traded off?”
Aidan nudges one wheel around awkwardly to face me better.
Tumblr media
“How so?”
Tumblr media
“I may not have experience treating injuries, but I at least have some knowledge of anatomy and the ability to read a reference book.”
Tumblr media
“I can play nurse for a while.”
I nod at Kanagi.
Tumblr media
“Not sure what that frees you up to do, exactly, but...”
Tumblr media
“Nah, that’s, like... good.”
Tumblr media
“Totally better than more of this, at least.”
Tumblr media
“Ah, but...”
Tumblr media
“...........”
Tumblr media
“...”
Tumblr media
“With infection concerns...”
Tumblr media
Ah, right. The reason I wasn’t assigned to Mahavir in the first place.
Tumblr media
“But even now, nothing’s happened to make us think he's got anything contagious. Right?”
Tumblr media
“At this point, I think as long as we don’t start sneaking sips from each other’s cups, there shouldn’t be much to worry about.”
Tumblr media
“......”
Tumblr media
“Ultimately, your... key is the only reason you’d need me specifically to check on you, right?”
Tumblr media
“Er...”
Tumblr media
“Well, I wouldn’t say ‘only’...”
Tumblr media
“Me as compared to Kanagi.”
Tumblr media
“I suppose...”
Tumblr media
“Uh, dude, I know how to use a key, too.”
Tumblr media
“...”
Tumblr media
“Look, we can discuss whatever safety protocols we need to, but I think this would be for the best.”
Tumblr media
“I’m... around now, I think. More consistently.”
Tumblr media
“So let me do this.”
Don’t know what to do otherwise, anymore.
Tumblr media
“......”
Tumblr media
“I’ll see what I can work out.”
Tumblr media
“Thanks.”
Kanagi pumps a fist.
Tumblr media
“Then I’m totally off to play ball now!”
Tumblr media
“No, we just said—”
Tumblr media
“Maybe you should tell me about—”
Nope, she’s gone.
Tumblr media
“—concussion... What’s the word. Protocol?”
Tumblr media
“I believe that’s correct, yes. There should be suitable reference documents in the office already, at least.”
Tumblr media
“In the meantime, I’ll attempt to stop her from wreaking any more havoc.”
Tumblr media
“All right.”
He sets out at top speed... or something. He’s certainly trying. At least the gym is on this floor.
Tumblr media
Which leaves me to tend to Mahavir.
Tumblr media
“.........”
It’s fine. He’s fine. Nobody’s dying today.
Tumblr media
I never thought anybody would.
Tumblr media
”.......”
That’s enough talking to myself. I’ve got work to do.
Doing What You Love
Hi again,
There's an old adage that says if you love what you do, you'll never work a day in your life. It's one of those things we've all heard and pretty much any variation on it is attributed to one great intellectual or another and it was probably actually said by someone trying to sound profound or someone who was high or someone who was both! And as anyone who has ever worked in their life knows, even if you do enjoy what you're doing for work, it is work. Like, that's why as artists, we like to be paid for our labor because while we may have a drive to create, we also are expending great time and energy and care and years of built skills to actually make the things we're asked to or even just want to make.
And, for myself and for a lot of other creators I've talked to over the entirety of my life, there is a compulsion to create. It isn't something you can easily turn off and just walk away from--even when you aren't being paid or recognized or sharing your work, you're creating it because it's important to you.
What I want to talk about, briefly, today is feeling the burnout of having your leisure and your work be so overlapping.
Sonic Superstars
In my free time the past week or so, I've been picking up Sonic Superstars. I've been having a lot of fun with it, except for getting that darned 5th Chaos Emerald! And it's nice to play a game and have fun with it. But as I play through, I also feel a burden at the back of my mind that this thing I am doing for my own enjoyment in my off time is also work. It's important that I know the story of Sonic Superstars. It's important that I can draw the connections from the game to the prequel comic SEGA released on socials (it's a lot of fun) to the characterization of Fang in our recently announced Sonic the Hedgehog: Fang the Hunter series that'll be kicking off Sonic comics in 2024!
Because so much of my work is tied to the creative impulse--to finding interesting storytelling angles, to finding new licenses, to using my knowledge to help my creators better tell their stories--I have a really hard time shutting it off. And while I have the often enviable position of getting to work on things like Sonic or formerly Transformers or Samurai Jack or whatever, being an existing fan of those things often does blur the lines when I continue to engage with them between my job and my interests.
And it goes to so many other things. The movies and shows I watch, the other games I play, the podcasts I listen to, the prose I read. Sometimes, I just have a bolt of inspiration. I feel like I know how to translate it into the comics medium. Or I read another comic and have an idea off of that. And for as much as that can be lovely, it can also be really hard because you don't want your free time to feel like work time in any way. And that burns you out.
There're different ways of dealing with it. Honestly, a big thing for me since starting to work in comics has been trashy reality TV because it can scratch my itch for something to enjoy in my relaxation time, while also not really engaging the storytelling part of my brain in the same way. It's a palette cleanser in a lot of ways, like a little piece of pickled radish. I know a lot of artists who make sure that for their warm-ups, they're drawing not just something for themselves, but that is so wholly different from whatever it is they're drawing for work. Maybe that's a stylistic change or if you're drawing a funny animal book, it's practicing your humans or vice-versa, or doing object studies or photo or model studies that're just wholly different. And I know some folks who use that time to work on their personal projects or commissions and--honestly--I think sometimes that burns them out faster too because they're switching projects, not switching from pleasure to work.
Like so many things at this moment, I don't know that I have a good solution other than to really try to separate these things out in your life. It can be extremely hard, especially if you use the same location or technology or whatever for both work and leisure, but keeping interests that're wholly separated from your job and doing things to care for yourself away from work is so important.
Support for Palestine
As the horrific destruction of Gaza continues, I just want to share some resources that hopefully might make some difference. It's frustrating living in one of the 14 countries that in the U.N. voted against a truce to provide treatment and healing. It's surely frustrating living in one of the 45 countries that abstained. And it's surely frustrating living in one of the 120 countries that won and passed a resolution to try to end the violence and to know that while there is international support--that there are so many people in so many places fighting for Palestine--their governments won't listen to the will of the people who are asking to end a genocide.
Ceasefiretoday has a lot of resources all collected in one place--protests, petitions, phonebanks, etc. Jewish Voice for Peace has a form letter you can use to email your representatives. There's an auction, Prints for Palestine, that's open through November 3rd. I'm a particular fan of Shoujo Beat, A Roll in the Hay, and Madame Piggy. Once again, game makers on itch have come together for a huge bundle, Games for Gaza.
Just to have this all mentioned too: SAG-AFTRA's still on strike and therefore folks still aren't working. The Entertainment Community Fund is there to help. Organizations that're on the ground--or trying to be--in Gaza are often international and servicing other areas too. I know Doctors Without Borders is also providing support to Ukraine, Afganistan, and Congo right now. KOSA is still in the Senate and still a bill that has had proponents say the quiet part out loud about using it as a tool to further limit trans, queer, and marginalized voices online. And there is so much else still wrong with the world that I want to be hopeful and say working together, we can do something about.
See you next time.
What I enjoyed this week: Blank Check (Podcast), Craig of the Creek (Cartoon--just finished the Heart of the Creek arc, so I guess we're very close to the end), One Piece (Manga--somehow, over the last month, I've managed to catch up on all 1100 chapters), Sonic Superstars (Video game), The Archive Undying by Emma Mieko Candon (Book), Reverse 1999 (Video Game), Yu-Gi-Oh: Duel Links (Video game), Wipeout (TV show),  Last Week Tonight (TV show), The Simpsons (TV show), The Traitors (TV show), One Punch Man (Manga), Crimehot (Webcomic - Adults only), Thirsty (Comic - Adults only)
New Releases this week (10/25/2023): Brynmore #4 (Editor)
Final Order Cut-Off next week (10/30/2023): Best of Godzilla, Vol. 1 TPB (Editor) Godzilla: Best of Gigan (Editor) Sonic the Hedgehog: Winter Jam (Editor)
New Releases next week (11/1/2023): No new books from me this week.
Announcements: Final weekend! I'm still doing a member drive over on my Patreon! You can read about it in a public post there! If you join, renew, or updated to the Feature Fan ($10) tier or above, you're going to get a Mystery Comic Grab bag! And as a patron, you're going to have a bit more choice on what all it is! This deal ends 10/31, so get on it now!
I'll be a guest tomorrow morning at 11 a.m. PST at Sonic Revolution's online convention! I believe our panel will be streamed on Twitch, but the majority of the con is on Discord! I'll be there with a big section of the IDW Sonic team!
Wanna support me? Buy physical copies of my comics at the webshop. If you want digital comics, or to just support me, there's Kofi. You can get some cool stuff from Ebay. You can support Becca from their shop, Patreon, or watching them stream on Twitch.
Also, plugging because I like good comics and if you read this blog, you probably do too. The ShortBox Comics Fair is almost over for the year, and there's a ton of good stuff available there.
Pic of the Week: Nadja was giving Tiansheng a bath and it was very cute. But upon realizing she had been photographed being nice, Nadja almost immediately stopped and Tian was so sad, he was chirping in distress. That lasted like 20 seconds and then he forgot what he was doing and they both just sort of started licking themselves. Cats are dumb.
2022年9月30日
It feels like September just flew by, and now it's time for an update! This month I tried a few new things and had varying success. I am a person who likes routine, and with my busy work and life schedule, it is difficult to get into a routine that won't fall apart if I get busy with work or my son, which I feel like sometimes hinders my progress. One thing I've been working on is building small daily habits to make things routine, and this includes learning Japanese. Since I don't have huge chunks of time to just study Japanese, these small habits are sometimes the only way I fit Japanese into my life.
あっという間に9月が終わった!これからは勉強のアップデートをしようと思っています。9月にまた色々な新しい勉強方法を試してみて、成功のレベルも色々ありました。日常のルーチンが好きな人だけど仕事や生活が忙しくてルーチンを作るのはなかなか難しい。ルーチンを作れなかったら、諦める人なのであんまり良くないね。最近毎日の生活パターンを少しずっつ作ろうと思っています。日常生活の色々なところを徐々に変えようとして、日本語の勉強も入っています。勉強ができる時間が少ないために少しずっつ勉強することしかないんですね。
Tumblr media
Small Habits I Used to Study Japanese This Month
Daily 言葉で遊ぼう (Kotoba de asobo - Wordle in Japanese)
Read one chapter a week of 夜カフェ (Yoru Cafe) Ch. 8-11
Listen to Japanese Podcasts 2-3 times a week
Watch 日本語の森 (Nihongo no Mori) N3 Grammar videos 2-3 times a week & take notes
Read a Japanese children's picture book to my son once a day
Sing a Japanese children's song with my son once a day
Daily kanji flashcards on renshuu.org
Translate an NHK News Web Easy article once a week
Other Study Methods I Tried This Month
italki - Conversation partner trial
Vocabulary flashcards on renshuu.org
Successful Study Methods
言葉で遊ぼう (Kotoba de asobo) is the Japanese version of Wordle and can be fit in when I have just a little down time (although sometimes it takes me longer than others), and since it's a game it's fun and I learn new vocabulary.
Reading a novel (ok it's a YA chapter book) with the discord crew keeps me on track, and I find this book to be a fun and easy read that I can pick up anytime.
Listening to Japanese podcasts during my commute allows me to focus on listening practice and have fun at the same time. Recently I've been listening to Let's Talk in Japanese which has episodes less than 15 minutes, so I can listen to at least 3 during my commute.
日本語の森 (Nihongo no Mori) grammar videos are less than 15 minutes and so I can fit them in before work or at lunch and review N3 grammar in a fun way.
Reading picture books to my son and singing songs with him helps me with reading blocks of hiragana in a natural way and pronunciation of Japanese words. It's also a fun way to teach him Japanese and to spend time with him.
Less Successful Study Methods
Kanji flashcards on renshuu.org I find difficult to access because it's not an app and just a website. So I don't do the extra steps to go find the flashcards for kanji. I need to work harder on making it a daily habit since I tend to forget to just go do it. The same goes for vocabulary flashcards, I just need to go that extra step to get to the vocabulary lessons.
I enjoy reading the NHK News Web Easy articles but I don't take advantage of them as often as I could. It's something where I have to remember to do it and I haven't made it a habit yet. I'd also like to read more challenging articles, but these articles take a short amount of time to read which is a bonus.
I tried a few conversation practice lessons on italki but since it was conversation practice I felt like I needed to do a lot of work beforehand to get something out of it. While it was fun to chat with the tutors, I would rather challenge myself a bit more. Perhaps I need to find a teacher who will make lesson plans instead. I'll need to do more research but if anyone has any tips let me know!
Things to Try Next Month
Add one more mini Japanese study habit to my daily routine
Try a different italki lesson type
Read more of my Nozaki-kun manga
Try something fun!
I'm always curious about how other people study. Let me know if you have any suggestions for studying that have helped you! Thanks as always for reading ^.^ Best of luck in your studies!
Hello! Recently, I’ve managed to get my hands on the Joker Games novels! If you don’t mind, could I ask about the identity of the D-Agency spy in the “French Indochina Strategy” chapter? I couldn’t guess who he was since there was not much information about his appearance. Thanks a lot!^^
Lucky you! I wish they were translated in my country!
From what I know the D Agency spy involved in that mission takes the identity of Gao (ガオ), an half Chinese half Thai local merchant (地元の商人 Jimoto no shōnin) in French Indochina.
As the story was never transposed into animation we can’t tell who of the “Joker Game” anime spies is playing the role of Gao for the simple fact that the novel world and the anime world are kind of like two parallel universes, the novel world having a lot more spies but missing some of our beloved ones (an let me not be started on how the stage version messed up continuity even more).
However, should we want to try to theorize a potential inclusion of “French Indochina Strategy” into the anime world, we can speculate the role of Gao would be taken by one of the D Agency spies who were free at the time... if there was one.
So let’s check if this is possible.
According to what I was told “French Indochina Strategy” takes place in 1940 between July and September.
Where were our beloved D Agency spies in that period?
Well, according to the timeline I made:
Odagiri resigned from D Agency on 11 April 1939 and he’s assigned to be a First Lieutenant (previously he was a Second Lieutenant) in Kwantung, Manchuria. [XX Double Cross]
Although I headcanon Sakuma left after him, very likely Sakuma left for the battlefront before Odagiri (and, in fact he doesn’t show up through the whole episode)... and okay, Sakuma is not a spy but I love him so I want to point out is whereabouts. [Joker Game]
Hatano is in France from 15 June 1939 to Summer 1940. [Miscalculation] He moves back to Japan where, always in summer, he impersonates, along with Tazaki, a Military Police man when Price  is arrested [Pursuit]. In fall, along with Kaminaga, he’s among the D Agency men who beat up the Wind Agency men who go at Shirahata’s house. [Double Joker]
Fukumoto learns that classified info was being leaked from the Japanese army in Shangai in July 1939. It’s reasonable to assume this means he was assigned to that case and moved to Shangai. The whole thing will end in July 1941 with Oikawa’s death. [City of temptation]
Amari is on the Tokimaru which started its travel on 21 June 1940. At the end of said travel he’ll leave D Agency and move to Honolulu to raise Emma with Frate. [Code name: Cerberus]
Miyoshi, between August and September 1939 moves to Berlin to study art, consequently becomes an art dealer and dies there on 13 December 1940. [Coffin]
Jitsui starts living in the Shirahata household between August and September 1939. His mission there ends in the fall of 1940. [Double Joker]
Tazaki is in Manchukuo from July 23 to 25, 1939 [Asia Express]. We know he is in Japan in summer, as he impersonates, along with Tazaki, a Military Police man when Price is arrested. [Pursuit]
Kaminaga arrives in London in the middle of October 1939, is kept under surveillance by the SIS and, ultimately captured by them. He escapes on November 16 after having been held captive for a week [Robinson]. The next we know is in fall 1940 he’s at Shirahata’s home (likely in October since we saw Gamo reporting to Kazato on 30 September) disposing of the Wind Agency members along with Hatano. [Double Joker]
So, in theory, the only spy among the ones introduced in the anime who could have had free time to go in French Indochina in between July and September is Kaminaga, the other spies being busy in that period.
However, since D Angecy continued to train spies, you can even see him as a completely new spy, trained after our beloved 8 spies left the agency.
Still, I hope it helps! Thank you for your ask!
2/1/2023 Update on progress using Glossika Japanese. Lessons listened to: 37
This update is mostly for my personal tracking later.
Downsides: I am struggling to get myself to listen to lessons. Based on time I have per day to listen to audio in the background, I should have gone through at least 100 lessons by now, and easily could’ve gone through 300. So 37 is... disappointing. I do relisten to the audios sometimes, so even though I’ve only gotten through 37 lessons I have probably listened to lessons 100 times. I suppose the upside is relistening to lessons before moving on is the actual way glossika recommends to study - listen to the prior day’s lesson before listening to the current day’s lesson. However, I was not trying to study how glossika recommended. I was trying to cram through as many audio lessons as possible so I could review if simply doing that and only that, was enough to learn a decent amount and see improvement.
I desperately would like to get through all 312 lessons in a month. Just so I could finish and prove to myself if it helps or not!
Since for me, a decent portion of these lessons are a form of audio review for me, so I do not need to be spending as much time on them as I am. I wanted to use these to review my knowledge and reinforce it, and strengthen my listening skills (and pronunciation knowledge) since I currently recognize more words by kanji meaning than by actually knowing their pronunciation (meaning I can’t recognize in listening words that I’d know if I was reading). So I feel I am... wasting a lot of my own time here, drilling beginner things I already know and working through the glossika lessons too slowly. Which is a bad perfectionist habit of mine that I often fall into when doing japanese study. oops.
I unfortunately have no solution to this tendency I have to avoid going through the lessons. I clearly am not super interested in the glossika lessons lol, they must bore me. For anyone else considering using glossika let this be useful to you: if you find it so plain its hard to listen to, it might be hard for you to push yourself to go through the lessons. The lessons are GOOD, don’t get me wrong. I just find it much ‘easier’ to make myself listen to a condensed audio of a video game (even though I know less words), or to play a japanese video game and look up words, than I find it to get myself to listen to simple boring daily life sentences in japanese/english. Just my personal focus issue. My brain loves to be challenged I think, even though I think in some cases like this it can make things less efficient.
Side studying I’ve been doing in japanese: I’ve played about 10 hours FFX and Persona 3 in japanese now. I went through about 300 memrise words in Nukemarine’s LLJ memrise courses before I got burned out with memrise again. I also have been playing like 50+ hours in the Yakuza games with english subs lately. While this doesn’t actually count as studying since I’m using english subs, I do hear the japanese audio frequently and I do think it helps me remember new words I’ve learned recently since I’m hearing them regularly and when I listen sometimes I try to compare the japanese I hear to the english subs and see if the translation changed anything. So all in all lets call the 50+ Yakuza games with english subs ‘mild review’ and count it as 10 study ‘review’ hours.
So total study time these past 3 months has been: 10 hours video games in japanese, 10 hours japanese audio with english subs (so review but not real study), 50 hours of glossika audio (each audio is about a half hour and I relistened to most lessons 2-3 times so I’m guessing around 50 hours total), maybe 5 hours memrise and trying out the Listlang app, maybe 4 hours on Satori Reader (which later on in my journey I think will be an excellent study tool to prepare for reading but I don’t have the money for a subscription right now). 10+10+50+5+4= 79 study hours. ToT
79 study hours over 3 months. Yikes. I sure am lazy. so in ~90 days I did on average ~50 minutes of study a day. Okay... not entirely awful I guess. I usually make good progress with chinese at 1-2 hours study a day on average, so 50 minutes isn’t way below that amount... it could be way worse. I’m frankly amazed I made noticeable progress in the last few months then, damn, considering it wasn’t like a few hundred hours...
Upsides: Despite my apparently not very high study hours... I actually have noticed significant improvement.
With Persona 3 - I played it 1 year ago and it took 1 hour to get to the save point. This month, it took about 20 minutes to get to the save point and I was able to get to the save point 3 times. So I was able to play the game 3 times faster, therefore I was able to read 3x faster. That’s a pretty huge improvement. I also was able to look up less words. When I played it a year ago I had to look up words frequently (about once every 2-3 minutes or more) and gave up even trying to read once I got to the school I just skipped text and tried to get to the save point as quick as possible and it still took an hour. This month when I played it I was able to only look up a word around once every 5 minutes, I could read the text fast enough that I did not need to skip text sessions to ‘speed up’ my playtime. I was able to spend some time actually exploring the character’s bedroom and school since reading was faster and therefore much more bearable. A 3 times faster reading speed is a REALLY noticeable improvement, I can’t express just how much easier everything feels when I can read faster. It makes the experience much easier and more bearable. Hiragana words and slang still made me feel very drained trying to understand wtf they meant by guessing, but it still felt 3 times easier than last year lol.
With Final Fantasy X - I’m noticing improvement AS I play. When I started, the menu was challenging, now I find navigating the menu quite easy and honestly a game menu is a great way to repeatedly practice recognizing words until you learn them. So is the combat menu. It’s like how in english we never knew the word ‘ultima’ or ‘aeon’ as far as the actual attack or creature they mean in a game, but we learn because a game teaches us. This is comforting, we have to learn these kinds of words even when playing games in english... so learning them in japanese is not really much different. So yeah, the pause menu and combat menu are already notably easier 10 hours in then when I started. Common words specific to this game were also picked up fast - I know know summoner, summon, defeat, cheer, pray, temple, monster, magic, boat, port, waruiwa - (used as ‘im sorry this is a bad time’ sort of like sumimasen but casual to end a conversation), a lot of more casual word endings or word forms (Tidus and Wakka...). This is comforting, as now I expect if I played something like say Nier Automata I would pick up the technology words eventually simply because they’re used a lot. Or in Kingdom Hearts I sure would pick up hearts, darkness, light, friends, friendship, worlds, keyblade, fast lol. I am also noticing it’s much easier to follow what’s being said in scenes then when I started. When I started I’d usually understand 1 part of a sentence but not all of it, or 1 sentence but then not 2 more then understand on again. Whereas now 10 hours in I watched the scene on Mihen High Road where Yuna and Tidus talk in front of the sunset. I understood every word of every single line, except 1 single line I didn’t know one clause within it. So I understood the scene Really Well, well enough to compare the japanese translation to the english translation I remember. There’s still lines where I only understand part of them (like when Seymour says ‘Then pretend I didn’t say it’ I understood that line but not the one right before it, or when Gatta says Chappu says spending time with your girl is nice but... I did not catch the part where I know in english he says ‘protecting your girl from’ sin is better. I only caught the ‘your girl’ part beforehand and ‘sin’ part toward the end). But I AM understanding a great deal of full lines, which is fun as I’ve been comparing it to the english translation I remember to see what was changed in english or kept the same. Lulu is... really direct in japanese just like she is in english, which I was surprised by. There’s also a part where Seymour asks Auron “It’s been 10 years, how have you been” or whatever, and Auron literally says “I’m Yuna’s guardian, I’m busy” then walks away. It was just really funny to me how directly he shuts Seymour down. Or when Gatta says when he told Lulu about Chappu, she hit him too.
When I started playing FFX this month I did not expect that I was going to eventually be able to understand the lines to this degree of detail. I thought at best I was going only be able to follow the main idea. Now to be fair: I’ve played this game before in english so I have that remembered english script in my memory to help me guess unknown words or lines. I expect a game I’ve NEVER played before would be considerably harder. However, this speed of progress bodes well for if I wanted to play Nier Replicant or Nier Automata. Apparently the navigation menus will not take more then a few hours to get comfortable with in japanese, and after enough hours I will be able to enjoy understanding the detail of a lot of the japanese lines. Which is definitely a good motivation to want to play more games in japanese - I am very interested in comparing the japanese script and choices with the english translation, and knowing it will be possible to do that is exciting.
With manga - an unexpected improvement. I’ve been opening up manga from time to time. I am finding some easier to read now. I think the improvement is mainly due to reviewing information I knew already because I’m using japanese more. I still find heavy adverb use and hiragana word usage hard and that’s where a majority of the unknown words I don’t understand but that are important are.
Basically - I’m seeing a significant reading improvement in both skill and especially speed at 3x faster than last year, ability to follow the speed up japanese in of cutscenes/follow the speed of japanese in audio much better than before, significant improvement in recognizing stuff I’ve studied before faster/easier, and some small but solid improvement in vocabulary. I did not expect any noticeable improvement until I’d studied a few hundred more hours, so honestly this is really great and a lot more than I expected.
In regard to the Glossika lessons: I DO think they’ve been helping, I Do think they’ve been reinforcing my knowledge I already knew and giving me good review, and while I struggle to listen to them often I do think they work similarly well for me as anki/memrise do except without requiring 100% of my focus when I do them. So the glossika lessons (audio flashcards) are easier for me to actually study. While I wish I was doing them more, I’m happy to say I do think they’re helping me improve like I hoped they would.
week one hundred and twenty three
i haven't met l all week and we don't talk a lot. i think i'm getting used to it though. i don't know. i'm just going to choose to trust he's just busy and that it isn't something else bothering him. i'll let it go on for a tiny bit and as of right now i've decided to not ask him to hang out and just wait for him to ask me since he keeps saying he's so busy and can't meet up a lot. it makes me feel so mean talking like this if he actually just is THAT busy but i don't know. i guess it's just weird to me because i tend to prioritize social relationships over a lot of things.
anyways, monday was my weekly shopping day! after going to a few second-hand stores all over town i decided to finally give up on looking for a cd shelf second-hand and i was just so tired of walking and everything so i decided to just do the grocery shopping. i just really need somewhere to store my cds... i have so many...
on wednesday the garfield plush i ordered a few weeks ago arrived. he's my baby, so cute.
on saturday i wore my new black button-up. i wore it over a my chemical romance tee and i looked so... gender.
speaking of which, i've literally entered a crisis.
i've been questioning like... every part of my life. my studies, my hobbies, my gender... literally e v e r y t h i n g. actually, on friday, applications for uni courses opened. it's open for a month and since my major doesn't have a program for it, i have to apply to the following courses each term. so now i applied to korean iii and korean regional culture but aside from those, i decided to apply to a course in game music and a beginner's course in dutch. game music seemed fitting since i really want to work with translating games and i already have a music degree so like... it seemed somewhat fitting. i actually put it higher up than the korean regional culture course because i really want to get in. the dutch i just added because i've been practicing dutch on duolingo and it's quite a good language to have for your repertoire of languages as a translator. although honestly, if i wanna work with games i should've gone with japanese or even chinese.
hobbies have been one of my concerns recently too. i wish i was creative. like i literally own a bunch of instruments and have a fucking degree but why do i never feel the urge to practice. i love the idea of performing and creating but i know no one in the area who wants to play in a band and i suck at writing songs. i love writing lyrics but adding the actual music part of it is not my greatest talent and just makes me feel like shit for even trying.
i've also been interested in trying to do youtube or maybe stream FOR A WHILEEE but i keep finding things that just keep me from doing it. for youtube i need to learn how to edit better. i've edited before and i honestly find it very enjoyable so i'd like that part of doing youtube videos. the recording kind of scares me off though. i just don't want to record videos when people are home, that's so humiliating.
streaming just seems like fun to me though, i'd have to get quite a lot for that though. feels a bit dumb doing it on my laptop TT my sister was so pro this idea though because we were talking about doing streams and i was like "oh, i'd like to try, it seems like a lot of fun," and she was so supportive of it and wanted me to try. i'd have to get a lot for it though: camera, mic, at least one monitor and every sims pack there is so i can actually like do everything. wouldn't be too mad about getting all the packs to be fair.
gender's also been a lot on my mind. i can't really explain the feeling though. i think if i were to not be cis i'd probably be something like genderfluid but i don't really like to be perceived as androgynous weirdly enough. i wish i could just grow a mustache on demand and grow some man muscle and look like that every now and then. like i like dressing feminine and doing makeup and a lot of the time i do just that but i don't know. i think the best way for me to describe what i want my gender to be is that i really enjoy loving girls as a girl but i want to love guys the way guys love guys. sorry for the binary sound of it but i hope you like... get the vision? i honestly have struggled a bit with just that feeling after starting to date l bc we're bi4bi but straight-passing.
this whole gender thing has kind of sent me into a spiral and i think i want more piercings and tattoos than ever now. i think they'll be weirdly affirming.
ugh, anyways, saturday afternoon my (our? don't really know how to word it since it's both me and my sister's cousin but not my sister's boyfriend's whom we live with?) cousin came by and stayed until midnight. it was really nice and we had tacos and played board games and just talked over cocktails.
at one point we were playing our silly little question game and one of the questions was which celebrity you'd pick for each person to marry and i got kristen stewart by my cousin and paul mescal by my sister's boyfriend and i am very happy with those!
my cousin came by this morning as well with a game she was lending to my sister and her boyfriend. we had a coffee together before i went back to getting ready for the day.
Tsunku♂-san〜!Yumigeta Ako (23.08.24)
Good evening🌛
I'm Yumigeta Ako🛑
Thank you very much for your comments yesterday!
Lots of you said 「I'm the person who did 〇〇 at the send off event〜」、
So while reading your comments
I could visualise you all like a manga like「I remember that…!」。
Some of you also said 「I wanted to come and see you〜」、and really、you've made me so happy just by being here and saying that!
I'll keep working hard so that I can show you a performance that makes you want to come back and watch us again✨
And yesterday、a roundtable discussion article between Tsunku♂-san and 16ki 17ki was posted!
I was so surprised〜!
I expected it to be held remotely 笑lol
I realised so many times that I couldn't express what I wanted to say!
I now have clearer goals outside of my performance to work on!
Tsunku♂-san smiled at us a lot during our discussion which made me happy。
Please see here for details💁‍♀️
Plus Plus、
As part of our discussion with Tsunku♂-san
He gave us lots of advice like
「Be conscious of makingTsunku♂ remember your name」
「Yes Yes Yes Yes!That kind of passion is great」
So I'll put them into practice!
After the discussion was over、when it was time to go home〜
I suddenly asked
「What's your favourite food!!!!」😂
I was pretty loud too 笑lol
He answered 「Hotpot is always delicious」 and told me his favourite hotpot ingredientsー!!!
I'm so happy〜💕
I got to ask him something I was curious about、and I had the opportunity to make him remember my name、because I think it's important to express your opinion even when asking questions!
I'm grateful to Tsunku♂-san for showing interest in me!
Really thank you very much ☺️
Well then it's time for today's 【Gettaa Life】✨
There's a Yamanote Line game right。(T/N In this context it's naming all the stations on the Yamanote Line, but the name is used overall for a game that is basically a combination of Scattergories, with the rhythm of Shiritori)
I'd hardly ever been to Tokyo before joining Morning Musume。
So I was often like 「What is this delicious thing?」 (T/N Not sure what she means here, might be a typo...??)
But But〜♪
Since joining Morning Musume。I've had more opportunities to ride trains、and I recently wondered
「How many station names do I remember?」
So I tried playing the Yamanote Line game by myself!
I did terribly。
Just trying to remember them was hard enough…
But then trying to remember them in time with the rhythm was just impossible…
So I've decided to study up!
I'll memorise them each time I ride the train!
By the way the ones I can currently remember are
Meguro、Ebisu、Gotanda、Shinagawa、Akikabara、Shinjuku、Harajuku、Osaki、Yoyogi、Tokyo、Ueno、Tamachi、Shibuya、Takanawa Gateway!
That's not bad right?!!!
I'll keep working hard every timeー!
I Getted 「The first step towards mastering the Yamanote Line game」!
Next time I want to play with someone else!
Who wants to play with me〜!
That's all!This has been 【Gettaa Life】!
⋆┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈⋆
T/N News and information has not been translated
⋆┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈⋆
Today I looked at lots of photos of myself on stage yesterday!
I sweat quite a lot so my hair is all limp but I'm glad I'm smiling so much and looking so cheerful in all of the photos!
And I think my smile during our Radio Taiso is especially pretty🤣
Well then I'll see you tomorrow!
This has been YumiGettaa Ako!Good night 🐙🐙🐙
