#because there’s nothing in my area other than retail and fast food and I will not do fast food

Please for the love of god how do u get a job at the library (also is your url stormblessed as in Kaladin bc FUCK YEAH)
First of all: YES Kaladin is thee character of all time he is my everything and Brandon Sanderson actually personally told me that he is aroace. So.
Second of all: OKAY I’ve got you friend. So getting a job at the library is largely going to depend on what kind of job you’re looking for. Unfortunately the more higher-paying full time jobs are going to require some degrees (usually a Masters in library science aka MLS) BUT there are way more options if that’s not feasible for you.
The easiest job to get at your local library is probably going to be a page position, though they’re sometimes called other names. These are your employees who check in books, organize them, and re-shelve them, as well as pulling holds and doing other odd jobs around the library (every library has a slightly different structure, so some duties may be distributed differently in your area!) Sadly it pays basically nothing, less than most fast food jobs, but literally anyone over the age of 16 can get hired and you need no experience or anything like that. It’s a great position if you’re not a people person (there’s very limited interaction with actual patrons!) Plus lots of people start from here and work their way up the proverbial food chain in their library. You’ll find lots of these positions open basically all the time because the turnover rate is so high, and it’s great if you’re looking for an easy, relaxing, low-stress part time gig that gets you real experience working in a library.
If you want a step up from pages that still doesn’t require a degree, your next option is a circulation assistant. These are the people who work the front desk (in adult or children’s sections), answer phones, help out customers, and deal with collection stuff that’s above the pages’ access/pay grade. Most of these positions are part time but some are full time! It pays more than pages- still not that much but depending on how many hours you work and which library system you’re in it can all depend. If you’re more open to customer service but don’t want to deal with food or retail it’s a good option, and it’s another stepping stone to higher positions with the added experience!
I would also recommend seeing if your local library has any special programs it houses that are hiring. Mine for example has a Makerspace area that has a 3D printer and cool machines galore, and those programs sometimes have full-time jobs available that don’t require a degree. Plus it’s a lot of fun.
(I will say that sometimes “””networking””” can be the key to getting hired in a library system. If you’ve been around the library a lot, whether it be volunteering or interning or working as a page or just being a memorable patron, if you know everyone’s name and are familiar with how the system works, it gives you a HUGE boost in the eyes of librarians. They also have a tendency to hire people just based on vibes, so if you’re just a super nice courteous cool person chances are you’ll get the job.)
Full time, higher paying jobs like reference librarians usually require an MLS but sometimes you only need a bachelor’s degree. It all depends on your library system. There are also soooo many different departments in the library that I’m not quite as familiar with (IT! Maintenance! Technical & collection services! Local history! Outreach! ILL! Children’s! Programming!) So if any of those are what really floats your boat I’d suggest doing a little research and seeing if it sounds like you!
Above all, the first step you can take is to just go to your local library’s website and check their job postings. It will (hopefully) give you way more accurate information than I’ve just rambled on about and give you a good place to start!
I wish you lots of luck, my friend. If you have any other questions about libraries I will do my best to answer them.

What is the ideal fish nutrition for both your pets and your tropical saltwater fish? On this, everyone has a different opinion. However, some people choose their fish food purely based on what the pet retailer tells them. That really limits both you and the fish you can catch. If you want to grow into a big, sturdy, creative, and unexpectedly content fish, you should ignore everything the fish guy advises and raise the bar.
You must first determine the rationale behind your fish, the reasoning for why you purchased them or obtained them in another manner, and only then can you choose the proper food for them. Do you require common, little fish to swim in the tank on a daily basis? Do you require prize fish, fish that appear a little bigger and are a little happier, on the other hand? Do you think your fish should eat more like they do in the wild, running after their own food and practicing the skills that come with hunting instead of racing to the highest part of the tank to acquire their old, dry fish meal?
If you require more frequent attention, live food is what you would choose. The food that was previously alive would then be frozen as the next stage, and to finish, there is the dry food or piece food that arrives in those cylindrical chambers.
Do your fish prefer the bottom or the top? Food that will either float or fall to the bottom will be appreciated by bottom dwellers. Obtain some live Tubifex worms. These may be found in the refrigerator at the pet store employee. They resemble a brown, pinkish, unorganised bunch of tiny thread worms. They smell awful, but the fish adore them when I collect them. If you accidentally drop a little ball into the tank, your fish will quickly rush over to get it.
Try them live saline solution prawns as their meal if you have saltwater fish or other unusual fish. Of course, dry or chip food can also be added to fish feasts to enrich them.
Your fish will do similarly well whether you purchase high-end or inexpensive food. So how do I at least have a vague notion of this? Once as I was caring for some fish, I ran out of fish food. So I gave the fish some food by crushing a few Cheerios between my fingers. They loved it and thrived on it, so I never went back to using regular fish food.
These fish grew in size from little fish being raised. My Cheerios were thus successful. Try nothing I suggest because it was my personal insight and I can't guarantee it will work for you or your particular species of fish. If you wanted to investigate alternative options in this area, you may start by adding Cheerios to regular fish food. That is only thinking; it offers no advice or direction. I wish you luck!
If you have a fish that has a good possibility of becoming larger and you need a large fish, you may start feeding it tubifex and move up to real worms as it grows bigger. By caring for and nurturing this fish properly, you may grow one astronautis oscellatus, which you purchased when he was approximately half an inch long, into a fish that is about two feet long. Incredible progress for an incredible fish. We had one of these and fed colossal, colossal night crawlers to him. We bought our first fish for less than two dollars, and it turned out to be a real beast.
Remember that sometimes you will spend almost nothing for the actual fish when you buy one. The real expense associated with keeping fish as a hobby is related to housing, feeding, filtering water, and adorning the fish and tank. I hope this information was helpful. Browse through my many articles on fish food, fish care, growing guppies, and more clear articles about clear fascinating fish-related side hobbies that will be distributed shortly. The creator has previously raised fish and has had experience caring for and paying close attention to a variety of critters over the course of her life. Any and all questions, concerns, and remarks are highly beneficial.

Tinderbox wolfchase mall

But Americans have been 9/11ed and Hollywooded into thinking a terrorist attack has to be some elaborate super planned out event with planes, suitcase nukes and whatnot. Traffic out there is frequently a nightmare.Īgree with you that the terrorism thing is beyond this thread and I apologize for my thread hijacking. To the extent that it is a victim of its own success. Furthermore, Germantown Parkway, in between Walnut Grove and 64 has more shopping than anywhere in the metro area. Wolfchase is doing as well as can be expected from a middle class oriented mega mall, a market that is struggling nationwide. Many of these folks like outlying areas, and spend little time in Memphis. But there is also a large demographic of folks who seek out that narrative because it confirms their ideas of how Memphis is. I agree that the 'if it bleeds it leads" "things aren't what they used to be" local news is a travesty. This is probably beyond the scope of this thread, but acts of international terrorism require far more planning than getting together a bunch of rowdy teens at the mall. If a bunch of knucklehead teenagers can organize chaos throughout the country via social media, why couldn't the latest bogeyman terrorist group do the same thing? Just goes to show how useless our "intelligence" agencies are. Some people need to respect and appreciate what we have before its all gone. We need to be glad that out city has a great mall that is doing well, especially in this day in age of the dying indoor mall and competition from Amazon and other online retailers. I don't shop at the Wolfchase mall much but these false accusations have to stop. They are not gonna let that happen and I cant see that happening myself. Long time residents will fight to the death to insure the Wolfchase does not become Hickory Hill part 2. Sure people of all races live in the area, but the white demographic remains the majority. White flight is not happening at Wolfchase either.

I cant remember the last time there was a full scale restaurant in that area that's not fast food. It would be as vacant and abandoned as the Trolley Crossing center. If the Wolfchase area was so called ghetto, then there wouldn't be multiple restaurants and other big box stores in the area. Compare the Trolley Crossing shopping center on Perkins/American Way to The Giasco Place across the street. The area around the Mall of Memphis went down with the mall. The same argument goes for the Wolfchase area in general. Even with all the Sears stores closing in the US, the one at Wolfchase would be one of the last to go. From a business/corporate level, not because of a local under performing store. The only way I see Wolfchase loosing an anchor would be Sears if they completely went out of business. I didn't see a "Extreme Wear" or "Regina's Nails" located in spaces that used to be GameStop or Charming Charlie's. Business is just fine at Wolfchase and isn't feeling the decline of American indoor malls. Wolfchase is still going strong and has yet to lose any anchor or national chain that hasn't went out of business. That's only three years younger than the entire lifespan of the Mall of Memphis. Later this year, Wolfchase turns 20 years old. There is a reason why Wolfchase is the main mall of the city. I dont see the need for all the worrying and false accusations. Hell, the entire Wolfchase area is nothing like the Perkins/American Way area is now. It also does not scream multiple store closures, white flight, and mom and pop discount stores. Sure we had a few incidents there, but it does not equal to the crimes we seen at MOM. Wolfchase has a VERY LONG way of even becoming anything close. Let me start by saying that Wolfchase is no where close of being anything ghetto nor anything like the old Mall of Memphis. After the "Mall brawl" after Christmas, I keep hearing local gossip about how the Wolfchase Mall is now ghetto and turning into the Mall of Memphis.

boo // d. kaminari
Tumblr media
A/N: this is my take on the horror, haunts and halloween bnharem server collab!
CHARACTER PAIRING: Denki Kaminari x Reader
WORD COUNT: 2,315
WARNINGS: unprotected sex, car fucking, some extremely mild spooks
SYNOPSIS: who knew a little bet between friends could turn into so much more?
Want to see what other spooky, scary stories await? Click here to find out !
“boo!”
“damnit Kaminari, you scared the hell out of me!” you screeched, whipping around to smack your friend on the shoulder. “besides, you should save all of the screams for the house tonight!”
he shrugged his body, clearly not bothered by your comment before proceeding to the men’s dressing area, makeup already adorned on his body. he was performing tonight as a sort of scary chainsaw man with bloodshot eyes and a dark streaked face. despite the outwardly appearance of his costume, he was, at least to you, a funny and extremely attractive guy. you two had spent your whole fall flirting and teasing in between hallways and sets, having fun and making people scared at the same time.
you never meant to work at a haunted house, but you needed the money, and it seemed much more exciting to get paid scaring people and dressing up in cool costumes over working a seasonal retail job. due to your ability to at least fake a scary and eccentric personality, they hired you immediately, along with a few other people your age. you figured it would be a good way to meet new people and have fun but you were certainly not expecting to fall in love with the dorky yet extremely talented kid with the cool hair and outlandish jokes.
your time in the dressing and makeup room didn’t take too long, adorning a creepy maid outfit with sunken black eyes and a wicked bloody smile. twirling the braids adorning your head, you skipped out of the room, ready to get into character and have another night of spooks.
“hey, let’s make a bet tonight, hm? make it a little more interesting?” Kaminari offered, sliding in beside you like he had been there all along.
“sure, what do you propose?”
“let’s see who can get the loudest scream of the night. we’ll both be generally near each other, so no cheating or lying because i’ll be able to tell!”
“how are we going to measure that? what if it’s really close, what are you going to do about that?”
“rock, paper, scissors?” he countered, flashing his hands and gesturing the game with a devious smile.
“sure, why not. what do i get if i win?”
“anything you want, sugar.”
you attempted to ignore the comment, though your cheeks heated up and your eyes grew just a bit wider.
“how about you owe me dinner tonight?” you joked, flashing your own toothy grin.
“that all, dollface? i’d do that any day.”
“oh boo, that’s boring. make him wear your maid costume or something!” Kirishima shouted from across the hall, seemingly butting into your increasingly heated conversation.
“now that’s an idea,” you teased, laughing along with Kirishima as Kaminari’s face turned bright red.
“that’s nothing! i’d do that any day,” he claimed, quickly moving on, “but i say if i win then you owe me dinner. easy enough?”
you nodded your head in agreement, shaking on it and pressing your pinkies together for extra emphasis before heading towards your separate destinations, ready for the challenge.
the night started off easy, you both earning screams of varying levels, but every time you got one, he shot right back with yet another. your jaw clenched and eyes grew dark, not backing down from the fight.
the whole evening and late through midnight did you two fight back and forth, tooth and nail, bringing out your nastiest and scariest tricks, doing everything you could to jumpscare and creep out the people of the attraction, but it seemed that neither of you were a clear winner. you, however, were not going to let him get the satisfaction of saying he won.
the final group of the night came through and you managed a loud, shrieking scream from the guy in the front, a wicked smile on your face as you waved at Kaminari down the hall. he retaliated with his own scare but, at least you thought, it didn’t quite live up to your own haunt.
“i totally won, i don’t even know what you’re talking about!” he shrieked, shoving fries in his face with a huff, waving his arms around in a display of anger.
“my scream was louder and you know it. just admit it, i was better than you tonight!” you argued back, leaning forward to look him directly in the eye, challenging him to keep up the fight.
he looked away, cheeks tinged pink at your sudden closeness, before crossing his arms and looking back at you.
“fine, i’ll pay for the food, but i still don’t think you won. i can make anyone scream louder than you.”
“oh yeah? why don’t you prove it?” you challenged, eyes unwavering and boring straight into the side of his face.
he took a moment to ponder, unsure of what you meant, before he looked back, pupils blown wide in shock.
“waiter, i need the check please.”
it took all of thirty seconds after leaving the dingy late night restaurant before his mouth was on yours, hot and unwavering, hands tangled deep into the back of your hair, digits pressing roughly into your scalp.
“where to?” he asked in between kisses, walking backwards as you trailed after him, hands grasping his shirt like it was your only lifeline.
“whatever’s closest,” you whispered back, feeling him hit the car with the back of his body.
he quickly whipped around, fishing frantically for the keys in his pocket before shoving the shiny object into the lock and twisting, whipping the door open and gesturing you sweetly into the car.
before you had barely sat down, he slammed the door, rushing to the other side and opening his own door, sinking in and turning the vehicle on, haphazardly buckling his seatbelt as he peeled out of the parking lot towards his apartment.
the bad part about working at a haunted house was that it was in the almost middle of nowhere. there was a small town with a couple restaurants and stores, but most workers came from the college town over, meaning you two had a small drive before you made it back to either of your apartments.
Kaminari gripped the steering wheel tight, his knuckles turning white from the pressure of trying to drive safely while getting there as fast as he could. his teeth ground into each other, face set in a harsh frown, stress permanent on his face.
“relax, we’ll get there eventually. you’ll kill the mood with your sour face,” you teased, reaching sideways to place your hand on his thigh. his body jumped at your touch, briefly turning to face you before veering off onto the side of the road, seemingly finding some close down parking lot with a few trees surrounding the area.
“i’m sorry, you’re just driving me crazy. you don’t know how badly i’ve wanted you, since the day i first met you. you were so cocky and confident in your interview, ready to have fun and be crazy in your acting, but the moment you stepped away, you became so sweet and kid, always greeting everyone with a smile and a wave. i couldn’t get enough of your duality, enamored in the way you could switch that smirk on like it was nothing. seeing you in that dainty little maid outfit you’re wearing doesn’t help all that much,” he confessed, wringing his hands together as he attempted to calm himself down. “truth be told, i don’t want to be that shitty guy who you think is only using you for sex, but after that little stunt you pulled in the restaurant, i don’t think i can wait any longer to fuck you.”
you blinked once, twice, three times, trying to process what he was saying before unbuckling your seatbelt and veering towards his body, chests pressed together as you managed to climb into his lap, attacking his lips with your own, relishing in the way he practically melted under your touch, eager to feel you on him once again.
“backseat. now.”
you climbed back without hesitation, flashing him a bit of your ass as you wiggled your way onto the seat, patiently waiting for him to come back. he followed without waiting, immediately pulling your legs onto the seat and hovering over you, hands on either side of your head.
“are you sure you want to do this?” he confirmed, brushing away a couple pieces of hair that was scattered across your face.
“yes, i’m sure. please fuck me.”
he wasted no time before attaching himself to you once again, lips finding purchase on your own, against your neck, your collarbone, unbuttoning the front of your costume to nip at your breasts, leaving marks that would surely last for days. despite the cramped position you two were in, you still felt slick pool in your panties, thighs rubbing against the side of his body as you attempted to create some friction to relieve the tension building up.
you whined, begging for more, but before you could speak up to ask him for something, anything, he had already obliged, reaching down to rub the pad of his thumb against your clothed nub. you moaned in response, the need for him only growing by the minute.
“please, Kaminari-”
“Denki, call me Denki,” he corrected, nipping at your throat as his fingers moved under the skirt and around your panties, “and don’t worry baby, i’ll take care of you tonight.”
with that final statement, he pulled your panties aside completely and pushed one finger slowly into your waiting body, shivering at the feeling of your wet insides sucking him in, greedily begging for more. your breaths became uneven and labored, but you remained patient, enjoying every feeling he pulled from your wanting cunt.
he continued his assault on your neck and chest as his fingers pumped in and out of you, adding one, two more fingers, stretching you out until you were sopping and begging for his cock. he paused for one moment, hastily pulling his pants down as best as he could. before he could get to his boxers, however, you reached past his hand, pulling them down and stroking his dick, admiring the way it twitched in your hands, swollen and leaky, wanting to be inside of you just as much as you need him.
you pulled him back down by his shirt collar, kissing him fiercely as he adjusted his body once more, you aligning him to your entrance, legs hiked up around his body as he caged you in. he sunk in slowly, not holding back his moans as he appreciated the way your body sucked him in, like he was meant to be there all along.
you moaned with him, a string of curses and praises flowing out of your mouth like a siren’s song, luring him into your lair one word at a time.
“Denki, fuck, you feel so good. please don’t stop.”
he bottomed out in your, laughing when you shifted your hips, whining as you tried to get him to move. he pressed a chaste kiss to your head before rolling his own hips back, shivering at the feeling of you wrapped around him. he continued his pace slowly, rocking in and out of you, watching the car steam up from your breathy moans and sweat covered skin, feeling the car move in tandem with your bodies.
you arched your back and wrapped yourself around him as best as you could, dazzled by the feeling of his cock pistoning in and out of you. he was so close, his breath against your ear, and you relished in the way he moaned and sighed, feeling just as good as you were in that moment.
he felt himself getting close much quicker than he wanted, but in that moment, he didn’t care, too enveloped in the way you squeezed around him, nails biting into his back and eyes screwed shut. he moved one hand back down in between your bodies and found your sensitive bundle of nerves, pressing down and swirling around, moaning as he felt you compressed around his cock, the new sensation overwhelming for you.
“fuck, baby, i’m so close,” he moaned, settling his head into your neck, biting down softly into your shoulder.
you only nodded back in response, too worried about chasing your own high that was emerging quickly with the combined pleasure of his cock and his fingers.
you arched your back and squeezed your thighs together as white hot lava shot through your lower stomach, cumming intensely on his cock. the feeling of your velvety walls pulsating around his own quickly brought him to his own high as he slowed his pace down, shooting his load into you.
you both laid there, breathless and sweaty, before you looked at him and erupted in giggles, wiping some of the sticky hair off his face.
“i really liked that,” you confessed, biting your lip and smiling shyly despite the position you two were still currently in.
“me too,” he agreed, kissing your forehead before slowly pulling out, sitting up and reaching forward into his console to grab a stack of napkins, cleaning you and himself up as best as he could.
you sat up after him, dizzy from pure elation, before a smirk came across your face.
“so you’re saying i won the bet, right?”
“i feel like i won the lottery tonight so yes, i’ll say you won the bet.”
“good,” you affirmed, reaching forward to grab his face in your hands, squeezing slightly before bringing him closer to you, “remember what Kiri said? i think i’m going to take his words to heart.”
he looked at you confused, shrugging, but as you stared at him, his eyes grew wide once more as he realized what you meant.
“you get to wear the maid costume next.”

Autism and Jobs
Related to the last blog I wrote, which stopped getting notes after like a few hours. LOL TW: Coronavirus talks; job loss So on Monday, I was told that I would be let go from my current job. What do I do in this job, you might ask? Literally my job is to take my ‘patient’ to and from his appointments 30 miles away. It’s literally the easiest thing ever, and was absolutely perfect as someone who 1) already was acquainted with the family to an extent and also friends with his sister, 2) in college, and 3) also as an autistic person and my patient’s mom literally works with people who are neurodivergent so she completely knows how to work with me. He’s pretty independent except for being autistic and also not being old enough to drive. So for me, this was like a dream come true: Something easy and something I could work while in school, and still get paid a decent amount of money. And tbh the family is really sweet and amazing. So, when she broke the news to me, I was so shocked and sad. It wasn’t anything I did, or she did.  My job (and actually hers as well) were victims of Coronavirus. Her hours are being cut, so she’s going to be home the entire week. His sister is likely to still be home this semester as well (again because of Coronavirus). Honestly, there is no point in keeping me if someone is going to be home all the time. So, I have about 3-ish weeks left. As I mentioned in my last post, I’ve been working for 3 years and have had 7 jobs. Every single time I was looking for a job, I’ve always found it practically impossible to find a job (except this one—this job I hadn’t actually been looking. My friend had messaged me asking if I would like to take her place while she went off to Job Corps. Having had a hard time at the dry cleaner’s, and anything to be done with working customer service, I did not hesitate to accept). Having to jump back into job searching has reminded me just how difficult it is as a neurodivergent individual to find a job.
I’ve had problems with people in the past thinking they knew what was best for me. I immediately cut ties with a former friend who was trying to force me into McDonald’s because, and I quote, “I’ve trained autistic people to work the window before.” and essentially any autistic person should be able to do the job. That’s not the case. Despite being acquainted with her for years, she obviously knew nothing of me.
I know what my limits and capabilities are. Fast food? I would not last a minute in fast food. I can list numerous reasons why I could never last: the sounds of food cooking, the sounds of people shouting over each other in the kitchen, people talking at the drive-thru, people talking in the dining area, the people talking at the counter, the fast pace. And that is perhaps just scratching the surface.
Car cleaning? I’ve already tried it, it’s similar to fast food but without the food. There was just too much going on, the heat, and too much physical work (I thought I could handle the physical work but obviously I couldn’t). Out of the question.
Grocery stores or department stores? Well, the last hundred times I’ve applied to grocery stores, I was always turned down. Why? Because I’m a college student with inflexible hours. That’s why. Grocery and department stores used to be great for college kids, but now it just feels like you have to be lucky as a college student in order to work retail.
Maybe return to the dry cleaner’s? Fuck no. I had more problems there than I did at the other dry cleaner’s that went bankrupt on me. Though I miss the one manager I worked under.  Maybe try another care attendant job? Well, I’m looking into it, but my problem is trying to find someone close to where I live, and in a similar situation to my current patient.
The problem I’m running into right now is a combination of, “These are things I know for a fact I cannot do.”, “I don’t have the skill set for this one”, “I need to be making over $9 an hour.” and “I am a college student, so my hours are inflexible.” And what really is frustrating is that I have even looked at Amazon jobs, and Amazon isn’t hiring near me. Or at least jobs within my “skill level”.  Yes, jobs for me exist. It’s just a matter of sifting through hundreds of jobs that I can’t do because of this, that, or the other. And if you’re a neurotypical reading this and your first thought is, “Well that’s your problem, you’re saying that evil four-letter word!” (Can’t) well, while you’re right that I’m saying that, you’re not grasping why I’m saying it. You don’t know my limitations—physically, mentally, and emotionally. You don’t know what I’ve tried and failed at no matter how much effort I put into it. You don’t know how many times at the jobs I’ve failed where I was in the bathroom, bawling my eyes out because of sensory overload or being treated like shit. Neurotypical people can naturally filter out things that cause autistic people sensory overload, burn-out, and to have meltdowns. And it’s not that I’m trying—because let me tell you, I’ve been trying as hard as I can. I am limited in what I can do, but I’m also willing to work hard at the things that I can, for a fact, do.  I can do the things I know I can do, I just want the opportunity to show that I can do them. And the fact that there are very few resources for adult autistic people, especially ones to help us find jobs, really makes things feel like an impossible task.

Pairings: Platonic: Loceit, Anxceit, Analogical
Prologue | Previous (Chapter 2)
~~~~~♡~~~~~
The rest of the day seemed to go by in a strike of lightning, save for the last class.
   Virgil tapped his pencil against the desk as he looked over the sheet in front of him. It was an introductory sheet, the paper divided into multiple sections with each area having its own little label.
   He had been staring down at the section labelled favourite food for what felt like twenty minutes now, relenting with a loud sigh and taking a moment to scan the classroom, his eyes flitting to Roman a few times without his control. He figured he would tackle food next, since he filled out the box with the caption "People close to you" with ease, but there were too many answers for this specific one.
   Speaking of people close to him, one thing he was excited for was that both him and Logan's parents agreed to let them hang out at Virgil's house. That thought made him smile as he redirected his attention.
   Looking back down, he just scrawled cookies on the blank slate.
   Then erased it, because he also loved his ma's tofu soup, which he almost always helped cook. He wrote down that instead, letting go of that last part as the words formed on the paper. No one needs to know he has anything to do with the making of it.
   Moving on- was.. was that a paper ball that flew past his face?
   Taking a look down at the floor, he picked up what certainly looked like a paper ball. He searched the class, eyes landing on May Li, an acquaintance of Virgil's due to the fact that they were in the same class in fourth grade. She sat in the table group in front of him, smack dab in the middle of the room.
   May was waving her hands wildly in front of herself, pointing to June, who had also been in their fourth grade class as well as Virgil's fifth grade class, and sat diagonal from him today.
   Virgil put the paper on his desk, slowly pushing it towards the brunette, which received a smile from May along with a confirming nod.
   He pushed the note over June's paper, which received a curious look as she finished tying her hair into a long ponytail. Virgil simply shrugged and pointed to the sender, who gave the smallest wave to the nonbinary one as she turned around.
   Virgil huffed a sigh, he supposed contentedly or amusedly, at the two as he looked back at his introduction sheet and listened to June unravel the paper. He had a feeling he'd enjoy being in this class this year..
   And by golly, was he wrong.
   Taking a moment to consider, he was also right, in a sense. But it was very difficult to consider anything when the whole class was yelling.
   They had gone through the whole day with bustling chatter, yeah, but not this loud. Virgil could barely form a coherent thought, much less hear it.
   The teacher had been trying to quiet everyone down, but to no avail. It was nearing the end of the day and everyone was tired, whether it be tired of each other, tired from the week, or whatever other kind of tired there was, and they were all ready for the weekend.
   After a few tries, came the clapping patterns.
   In an immediate response, the majority of the class echoed the clapping pattern the teacher gave, everyone seeming to echo both the second and third times as well.
   Virgil gave a small laugh as the sounds lined up. Just like elementary, he fondly thought, remembering just a couple months ago. He was terrified that middle school required him to leave behind that fondness.
   After the chorus of booming sounds, the teacher instructed everyone to pack up and put the chairs on the desks.
   This class was unbelievably interesting so far, and it's only the first week.
   Him and Logan met on the front steps shortly after the bell signalled the end of school, both of them fortunate enough that neither of them got stuck in detention since it was only the first week of school and most teachers refused to hold anyone past three o'five at this part of the year.
   Although, Virgil had a hunch the detention situation would change after the second month or so.
   Him and Logan kept up a steady flow of chatter while walking their usual route, talking about everything and nothing, diverting onto a larger street they had affectionately dubbed Retail Road. The name was a result of the many cafes, shops, stores and fast food places along either side of the street, and simply stuck through the years.
   They talked as they walked, deciding to stop by one of the pizza places to pick up a box of fries before going to Virgil's house.
   As they walked through the door in a small fit of laughter, Virgil saw Ethan lightly tapping his foot with a need to fidget as he stood at the counter, ordering a slice of pizza.
   Virgil turned to Logan, nodding toward the one he'd met at lunch. "That's Ethan, remember I was talking about them?"
   "Interesting," Logan stagnantly replied, noticing the green and blue shades on Ethan's face. He stepped forward, confusing Virgil for a moment.
   By this point, Ethan noticed them, looking up from their phone as Logan stepped up to them with Virgil in tow. "Hello?" They clicked off the device in their hand. "Who's this, Vi?"
   "Friend," Virgil quickly replied before he branched off to order and pay for a box of fries prior coming back. Better to be efficient with time.
   "So," Virgil managed once he stood back at Logan's side, a bit nervous about the interaction. He fiddled with a few sounds before deciding on something. "Ethan, this is Logan, my best friend-"
   Logan promptly gave a small wave and smile.
   "-and Logan this is Ethan." Virgil gestured to the other.
   Ethan was about to say something before being called over to receive his order, saying he'd be right back.
   "They seem nice," Logan decided, speaking in the few seconds where the other was absent.
   "They are," Virgil confirmed.
Running Update!
After returning home, I had a really great period of training! I finally hid time to really focus on running every day since all of my classes ended really early in the morning. I got up to 33 miles with no pain and ran my first workouts since my labral tear.
Right before finals, my brother decided to take part in a virtual track meet with his HS team. As a joke he registered for all the running events available. I decided to run with him for fun! We found a pretty large parking lot because all the tracks in the area were closed. Unfortunately, we live near the mountains so the entire parking lot was slanted. We also attempted to measure the shorter distances out with a tape measure so they were definitely not super accurate. I ran most of the longer distance events (2 mile down to the 400m) but skipped out on the 300, 100, and 60 because my piriformis was starting to bother me. The entire “meet” went fairly well, since I ran like 5 events in a day (with minimal training) I wasn’t expecting much. I surprised myself with a 6:19 mile with pretty much no speed training (unless you count strides?) and a lot left in the tank.
After the virtual meet, finals came up and I pretty much stopped running for 2 weeks and put my mind and body through hell to crank out 5 essays in 4 days. I really thought I’d do terribly but somehow ended up getting As or A-s on all of them?? I’m guessing the profs were a little more lenient on grading than usual.
After finals ended I started running again and since I had signed up for a virtual 5k (without realizing I would take that much time off running for finals), I dragged myself back to the parking lot and cranked out a 5k at the end of the week. Again, I wasn’t expecting very much and decided to use it as a time trial to gauge where I was. Somehow I ran faster than I ever did in college and ran a 20:42. My first mile was a 6:10 (yikes with the pacing lol). I’m not quite sure how because again, I had taken 2 weeks off and had just started training again after a major injury, but it made me super hopeful that my fastest days are still ahead of me. Of course, this is still almost a minute off of my real 5k PR but hopefully I’ll get there with time. Part of me is sad that this didn’t happen while I was competing in college, but at least I know that I still have it in me!
Unfortunately, my current job (that I’m starting to dislike) is exhausting and has me working really erratic hours. I came home past 10:20pm two nights in a row this last week. I had to work from 3:15-10:15 with pretty much no break with no notice beforehand. My boss has a habit of randomly calling me and asking me to come in and I usually finish pretty late at night, so it’s really difficult to schedule a time to run. My hours are also such that I usually can’t eat dinner until I come home from work, so now I’m eating dinner at like 10. I’m irritated because this job has nothing to do with my future plans, I function best when I know my schedule beforehand (not the day of??), and I really didn’t agree to be working like this. I’m actively seeking other jobs more relevant to my field and I hope I can find something soon so I can get back to having a more stable schedule (and so I can run more consistently). I know I’m lucky to have any job at the moment, but two days ago, I was the closest I’ve ever come to crying at work (and I’ve been both a retail and a fast food worker).
Open Letter to the Board of Education of Baltimore County
As a paraeducator in a local high school, there is nothing more that I would rather do than walk into my school building in September, meet the new crop of students and help them learn. Unfortunately, I am also gravely concerned for my safety, the safety of my fellow staff and teachers, and the safety of the students in my school building if we go back in-person in September.  My questions for the board are as follows:
1. How will the board ensure that schools adhere to the guidelines stipulated in the Maryland Recovery Plan for Education?
The guidelines stipulated in the Maryland Roadmap to Recovery are vague in language. It uses the phrase “if feasible” 6 times. Once in reference to the 24 hour disinfection guidelines (if that isn’t feasible, “Wait as long as possible.”) Another is in reference to the spacing of desks (“6 feet apart, when feasible”) and a third is in response to wearing cloth face coverings. Given the pressure to reopen as quickly as possible, and given that the funding required to adhere to these guidelines is not guaranteed, how will the Board assure that these guidelines will be followed as written?  Because as I see it, there is a real possibility that staff and students will be in situations where surfaces have not been disinfected thoroughly, or where students are still crowded into classrooms. Many of the general education classes I assisted with last year had 30 students and 2 adults present. The guidelines stipulate we must have all desks 3-6 feet apart “if feasible.” I can tell you right now, that is not feasible. What happens if adherence to the guidelines is “not feasible?”  With limited resources and limited bandwidth for enforcement of rules and regulations, I am not confident that guidelines will be followed as written, because they are written to not be followed.
2. How can the school board assure us of our safety and our students’ safety given the uncertainty regarding children’s role in the spread of COVID?
My second concern regards the evidence that in-person school is safe for students and staff. Much of the evidence cited for the safe reopening of schools cites studies that look at children in daycare settings, the oldest of which are 12-14 years old. However, the evidence for lower transmission rates in children is far from definitive. In fact, in Texas, where stringent guidelines for child care centers have been relaxed, COVID cases among children and staff are on the rise.  The facilities from which these data are taken were able to abide by social distancing guidelines and class-size limitations in a way that a 2000+ student high school will find difficult to emulate.
3. How will the board address the unique needs and concerns of older students and the staff members who work with them?
My third concern relates specifically to high schools, where the student body is older and much more adult-like. None of the aforementioned studies even look at students over the age of 14. The maximum age of typically developing “children” educated in the United States is 18, and that age increases to 21 years in certain extenuating circumstances. Clearly students in this age-range are more like adults than they are like kindergarten students. Many of our students 16 and above are in the workforce. Many are considered essential workers and may have taken on more hours over the summer or during the last 5 months of the school year, as their parents and caregivers were furloughed or laid off. It is not unusual for a 19-year old immigrant student to work construction or demolition. Others are pressured to take longer hours at fast-food drive throughs and retail stores. All of these circumstances increase the risk of spread throughout the school building and community, and increase the difficulty of contact tracing.
4. How will the board protect the health and safety of all of the school-system’s employees, not just teachers and administrators?
I am a paraeducator who works with students with a wide-range of disabilities in order for them to be successful in the classroom. This support includes providing proximity control (being near students so that they remain on task) as well as scribing and reading aloud to students so that they can have full access to the curriculum. All of this requires me to work in close proximity to older students for more that 15 minutes at a time (the threshold for “exposure” in a contact-tracing scenario). Furthermore, unlike teachers, I work in a broad range of contexts. Last year, I worked in 4 different content areas with students in 9th-12th grades inclusively, and I do not follow an individual student. If I am exposed, or if someone in one of my classrooms is exposed to COVID, do we all need to self-isolate for two weeks?
Additionally, much of the support provided to our most vulnerable and needy students is provided by kindergarten assistants and additional adult assistants. These assistants work in extremely close proximity to students. They feed students, dress students, change diapers and help students use the bathroom. They do all of this as contractual employees who are not eligible for health insurance and who make far less money than they would in other essential industries. How can we assure the safety of these underappreciated and essential workers?
Thank you for your consideration during these unprecedented times,
Jean A. Milstein
I'm about to be 19 and I don't have nothing to show for it I don't even have a high school diploma because my mom made me stop going to HS school (long story) no job will hire me so I'm stuck I know I have to get my GED but these test are hard and I feel like I can't pass because I was a low level learner is school and it hurts to see all my peers starting college or trades and I'm here with not not even a diploma im so depressed
I’m sorry that you’re feeling this way, love. The key thing to remember is that everyone does life at their own pace. Some people move along faster than others, and that’s okay. You shouldn’t compare yourself and your journey to others. Here are some tips:
1. See what resources are in your area for GED testing. Oftentimes you can find programs that will offer to tutor you and help you for little to no costs to you. If you can’t find somewhere, see about going to a public school and finding out if one of the teachers there can help you before or after school.
2. Many places such as fast food and retail, some seasonal work, etc. won’t require you to have a high school diploma or GED. As long as you can show that you can count back change and read/operate a register or computer, many places won’t care about your diploma. While these jobs often only pay minimum wage, it’s better than nothing!
3. Take your GED. Be confident in your abilities. You WILL pass.
4. Consider your future. Would you like to go on to college? A trade school? Stay in the work force?
All the love xx
7 Instant Ways To Reduce Your Carbon Footprint...
1. Stop Eating (or Eat Less) Meat
The single most effective action you can take to combat climate change is to stop eating meat. Just limiting your meat consumption can make a huge difference. Greenhouse gas emissions from agribusiness are an even bigger problem than fossil fuels. So while we often talk about cutting our reliance on fossil fuels – and this is still critically important – we rarely discuss the worst culprit. Red meat is particularly to blame, consuming 11 times more water and producing 5 times more emissions than its poultry counterparts. You don’t have to become a vegetarian, but eating meat less frequently (the average American eats 8.5 ounces of meat per day!) will significantly help the environment. To get a single pound of beef, it takes over 5,000 gallons of water – as the number one consumer of freshwater in the world, animal agriculture is drastically increasing the problem of water scarcity. Don’t forget to inform others: many people simply don’t know about the connection between meat and climate change.
2. Unplug Your Devices
You might be surprised to learn that all electronics suck energy when they’re plugged in, EVEN IF they’re powered down. In the U.S. alone, “vampire power” is responsible for draining up to $19 billion in energy every year. Anytime a cord is plugged into a socket, it’s drawing energy – so although your device isn’t charging, you’re still contributing to your carbon footprint. Simple solution? Leave your electronics unplugged at all times, unless you’re actually using them.
3. Drive Less
Choose to walk, bike, or take the bus – leave the car at home, and you’ll be making an easy decision with immediate results. Many people are opting to bike to work, especially with bike lanes becoming more prevalent. Cities are finally investing in the necessary infrastructure to make it easier not to own a car. There are over 65 million cyclists in the United States, a number that has risen dramatically over the past five years. Increasing populations have made effective public transportation more necessary than ever, and options like subways, trains, buses, and rapid transit continue to grow. Many new bus routes are even turning to hybrids, solar power, and other eco-friendly alternatives. In the U.S., public transportation saves 37 million tons of carbon emissions every year. Cities are also increasing walkability, with architects incorporating more outdoor and green spaces, and new buildings focused on green infrastructure and community engagement.
4. Don’t Buy “Fast Fashion”
Many major clothing retailers practice what is known as “fast fashion” – selling an endless cycle of must-have trends at extremely low prices. Have you ever wondered how it’s possible to pay only $4 for that t-shirt? In this consumer society, we think of fashion as disposable – after all, if I only pay $4 I might not think twice about throwing it away. Heaps and heaps of clothing ends up in the landfill, often to justify buying the latest styles. We’re talking over 15 million tons of textile waste – with quantity over quality, fast fashion retailers can charge next to nothing for items that are mass-produced. They push these garments to sell by creating more fashion “cycles” or “seasons” – where there used to be 4 per year, there’s now often 12 to 15. There’s also the issue of contamination: almost half of our clothing is made with cotton, and unless it’s labeled as “organic” cotton, there’s a high chance that it’s genetically modified cotton sprayed with lots of pesticides (including known carcinogens). This can be damaging to neighboring non-GMO crops, cause water contamination, reduce biodiversity, and have negative impacts on human health. Don’t forget that anything made overseas has a huge environmental impact – from the physical act of shipping a product across the ocean, to the chemical runoff from garment factories (leather tanneries are particularly bad). As if that’s not enough, fast fashion is an industry still largely propped up by child labor. Toxic to the environment, detrimental to human rights – who needs it? Try alternatives like re-purposing old clothing, choosing locally handmade garments, buying vintage, or participating in clothing swaps with family and friends.
5. Plant a Garden
Whether you live in a house or an apartment, planting some greens is a quick and easy way to reduce your carbon footprint. We all know plants absorb carbon dioxide – a beneficial relationship for humans, that we should all be seeking to nurture. Plant some bee-friendly flowers, a few trees, or a vegetable garden. Balcony gardens are great for urban dwellings. Cities often need to reduce the “urban heat island” effect – basically, cities tend to be hotter than rural areas because of vast pavement areas, concrete buildings, and increased human activity. Creating more spaces for plants, grasses, and trees can mitigate this effect and lead to better cooling, which will be a necessity with worsening climate change. Help avoid the “heat island” effect by planting trees for shade, or maybe try a green roof or community garden.
6. Eat Local (and Organic)
Whenever possible, try to eat local, in-season produce. Sticking to foods that are grown locally, in your own city or surrounding area, helps to reduce the carbon footprint created by shipping foods from elsewhere. A general rule for where something is grown? The closer to you, the better. When a fruit or vegetable can be grown in your own backyard, or a local farm, the environmental cost is significantly reduced. Just imagine the journey that food from a distant country has to take – by plane, ship, train, or truck, the produce must stay cooled, so it doesn’t spoil, and has usually been picked way too early (resulting in not-so-great quality, and fewer nutrients). Small farms are more likely to adopt beneficial soil-care practices and maintain borders for local wildlife, and eating locally-grown food supports your local economy and promotes food security. It’s equally important to eat organic produce, which hasn’t been sprayed with toxic pesticides and other environmentally detrimental chemicals. Don’t forget to avoid processed foods: processed and packaged foods are often bad for your health, not just the environment. Processing plants are major polluters, and their products contribute to health epidemics like obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. Choose whole foods that are better for the planet, and better for your own longevity.
7. Line-Dry Your Clothes
New is not always better – the traditional method of line-drying your clothing is much better for the environment. One dryer load uses 5 times more electricity than washing – by simply line-drying your clothes, you can save 1/3 of their carbon footprint. Unfortunately, line-drying seems to be America’s least favorite way to save energy – despite the fact that running a clothes dryer is equivalent to turning on 225 light bulbs for an hour. Europeans, on the other hand, are excellent at this (95 percent of Italians don’t even own a dryer) – it might be time to follow their lead, especially considering the tumble dryer is one of the top energy-consuming appliances (not to mention the leading cause of appliance-related house fires).
Anyone can make these simple changes: they’re easy to implement, and are immediately effective in reducing your carbon footprint. Our actions and choices ultimately make a difference, and we all share the responsibility to do whatever we can to address climate change, big or small.
i’m going my part. i have meatless days and walk just about everywhere.
ok, seriously. i’ve been graduated from college for six months and adult life is a joke.
there is literally no time in the day to take care of yourself properly AND do your utmost at work. pick one. i’ve been wondering why suburban americans are always so nuts about “health binges” and going “keto” and 10k runs and kombucha. well, news flash. americans are fucking unhealthy
people drink and smoke like there’s absolutely no tomorrow, so many people are addicted to drugs and painkillers, if you’re lucky enough to avoid mcdonald’s and other artery-clogging delicious fast food, you end up only having enough time to heat up a disgusting tv dinner in the microwave. if you want to work out or “jog”, you better be up at 4:00 every day to make time before you have to leave for work.
i’ve done the math and for me to be both healthy and put in full hours at work, plus overtime when needed, i’d have just a few hours or even less in order to do anything fun at all. i understand now why people get pissed in traffic, because it’s just more of your precious time wasted sitting in traffic. time that could be spent repairing your frazzled nerves.
i can understand why people want to move away from urban/suburban areas and just live a subsistence lifestyle on a farm or something. i don’t think i could handle it, as i’ve been raised in a moderately big city and the idea of not having modern conveniences and good medical care nearby is rather off-putting to me.
but, really. it’s such a joke how much of a push there is nowadays for people to “make healthy choices”. you can’t make healthy choices when you’re forced to wake up at a certain hour, slog your way to your office, forced into social interactions that physically drain most introverts (look it up), then you have no choice but to work overtime in order to complete the work you were supposed to do during the day but were interrupted by people talking to you / at you, and by the time you finally see the sun again, it’s almost set and you’re on your way home to collapse into bed. only to do the entire thing again the next day
there aren’t even jobs for things that people want to do. what if you want to work on games, the arts, writing fiction? even those who get jobs doing that put in crushing hours, and you’re likely to end up having to work on something like minions to get a foot in the industry. very precious few people get the privilege to create and work on their own IPs, and for the rest of those out there, you would have to get a second job in retail hell to support yourself financially, unless of course you have rich parents, in which case, bless your little heart and can we trade lives for a few decades please.
in the remaining time you do get for yourself, you have to quickly slap together meals that are bad for you and usually taste bad. rather than taking all day to cook something elaborate, you will inevitably order in and it costs like $20 plus tip. good luck learning to cook after working all day. what a joke.
not to mention the very idea of owning an entire house, having to clean and maintain said house and lawn, running errands, shopping for groceries, remembering which bills you have to pay manually...
and if you’re a woman, you better take the time to make sure you look presentable at work. which means waking up an hour earlier than you would like to slap on makeup and ensure your outfit is spotless. and for those of you with naturally curly or wavy hair, well... good luck finding time to sort that out, because only stick-straight hair looks professional i guess
what money you do get from a job goes straight to fucking bills and debt.
there is no time to maintain relationships with friends and family outside of holidays. much less to make new friends. how people can maintain a relationship and have children (some people have more than one child????) is absolutely a mind blower. not to mention making sure your pets are well cared for, it’s something that can’t be neglected.
there is no time to do volunteer work and outreach, i wish i could say there was. there is no time to join a club, take a class, make a personal project. hobbies are dead - crafting, painting, even watching netflix. it’s all kind of out the window, except for precious weekends which are basically two days of sleeping.
people need uninterrupted leisure time. hours of it. days worth, to make up for days spent at work. we need vacations and breaks to calm our minds and keep us mentally healthy. if you’re an introvert you need sleep and you need time by yourself just to be yourself - no makeup if you don’t want, comfy clothes, no demands, no interruptions, do anything you want to do, or just do nothing at all. and even hours isn’t enough. you need at least a whole day, maybe two or three in a row. and sometimes you can’t get that.
people need time to learn new things, to travel, to meet new people, to work on art projects and learn new skills. there is so much more to life than just living to work, infinite things you can do (or not do) with each given day.
it’s hard not to burn out. because the demands on us are greater than ever. i haven’t had time to go to church anymore for a long time. i pray while commuting, just in my mind.
sometimes, it just feels like i’ll never have the life i want. never enough time, enough money. i’ll never look right, or finish that game i want to build, or find the people i want to be with, never have a job i love, with enough pay or benefits. i’ll never travel to that place or have time to read that book series.
i recommend that each day, everyone remember that you don’t have to do any of it. executive dysfunction is real but sometimes, when your body’s telling you to rest, you need to rest and that’s real, too. you can take a day off from work. you can reschedule a date or appointment. you can say “i’ll do it later”. if you have to do it, just do the most important part and be done with it. time is very important. take the time you need, do stuff for you, even if it means staring at the wall for two hours. this is not and will never be a waste of time.
everything you do, even working a shitty job, is improving you. change will happen, and everything is temporary. if you’re liking your life, enjoy it. if you’re not, it will change. you will change. some things will be better and others worse. just let it go, because most of it is out of your control. you are doing your best, and that’s all that really matters here
I know no one is really active on here anymore — most of my mutuals and followers have left, I think — but I figured it couldn’t hurt to post this here.
I’m about to have a major, major surgery, and although the GoFundMe Story goes into a lot of detail (like, a lot of detail), here’s a tl;dr, since the original is 9,000ish words, and includes a lot of info on Donation Rewards.
I have a skin disease that causes painful lesions. It’s not leprosy, but someone, at some point in history, had to have gotten the two mixed up. One of these lesions came up in a terrible place at one point (Late Nov/Early Dec 2017) and didn’t go away — I didn’t have health insurance at the time, so I ignored it as long as I could. At my breaking point, two weeks (!) before I regained insurance, I went to the emergency room, got knocked out with Ketamine, and had it taken care of. They told me I needed immediate surgery, because since I had waited too long and tried to put it off for, like, a month, it had tunneled a hole several inches deep into my skin, almost down to the bone. I put it on hold due to not having insurance, then classes started, I dismissed it, and nothing happened for a year.
Fast forward to November 2018, I’ve long been insured again by that point. Another one comes up in the same area, and I know what’s coming this time. I get through a week of work and school, sitting on my hip and getting funny looks but not missing anything because of pain. Friday night, the week is over, my fiance takes me to the hospital, they cut it (with me awake this time) and promise me a referral to a surgeon, now that I was insured. I did not get a referral, but I did get several thousands of dollars in bills.
Now, here I am again, less than two months after my last one, and I’m in the same shape, with a third one. I’ve already been to the ER, and this time I actually got a referral. I was so thrilled! I met with the surgeon, and she burst my bubble really quick. I thought, you know, “oh, in and out, cut out the thing, send me home,” no. This surgery is going to be extremely complicated and, to be honest, since it’s so close to the base of my spine, kind of dangerous. There isn’t just the one sinus from the first cyst, no — the first cyst, then every cyst afterward made its own sinus, filled with scar tissue and infection. Three of them, total. They want to biopsy them when they come out to make sure nothing’s cancerous, or something else horrible.
This surgery will be so bad, and the recovery process so difficult, that I won’t even be able to sit for two months, minimum. I’ll have to go to my checkups in a vehicle I can lie flat in. No wheelchair or being driven anywhere — completely and totally horizontal. If I bend my back too much, I could rip staples and stitches and have to start completely over again. Not to mention that the blood flow to that area of the human back is already horrible, because why wouldn’t it be, and there is a high chance of flesh dying when stitched back together. Anyway, because of all of that, I can’t sit. For a long damn time. I work in an office, which means if I literally can’t sit at my desk for two months, the most basic function of my job, then I can’t work for two months. I may even lose my job because of this. I hope not (I mean, I really hope not), but I mean, of course they can’t just live without an office assistant for 2+ months, and I don’t know why they’d hold out for me just because I’m a good employee.
If I’m not working and earning money, I don’t know how I’m going to pay bills. I’m already making the minimum payments on almost everything because, even though I’m in a “cushy” office job, it’s more of an internship than anything and barely pays at all. I make less in this job than I have ever made in any retail or food job — I made more at Domino’s and quit there because I wasn’t making enough money. I’m paid fifty cents above minimum wage for my area, and I’m lucky to break $500 a month working my normal, scheduled hours. When that income is gone, I will have no money for groceries, no money for gas, and no money for my car insurance. Sure, I won’t be able to drive, but I still have to put gas in other people’s cars to take me wherever, and I still have to keep insurance on my car, otherwise when a tree inevitably falls on it, I’ll be up shit creek. I’ll have no money for my credit card bills I have to pay every month to keep them from going to collections on me. Or for the medical bills I’m already making the most miniature, tiny payments on. I’ll also have no money to keep refilling the several medications I have to take every day (most importantly my epilepsy medicine, my heart rhythm medicine, and my depression/anxiety medicines), all of which total about $90-$110 a month, depending on whether I have to fill the “as-needed” prescriptions that month.
Even though my house is paid for until May (thanks, student loans), I may have to move back home if I cannot come up with some money to support myself through this, and to pay back some of these massive medical bills. However, my mother is Borderline, a former addict, a thief, and can be extremely abusive — and my grandmother takes too many pills and starts fights. I lived with that for 18 years, and I didn’t move three counties away and start a good, peaceful life for myself just to have a disease ruin it.
To make a long story short, I really need help. If you can’t donate, please, please reblog this. Any of my mutuals that are still around and all of my followers still here know that this isn’t a typical post from me. This, in general, is not typical of me. But I don’t have a choice. I either have to ask for help or I’ll drown in these expenses. So, I’m asking.
Please reblog, and if you can spare a bit right now to donate, I will always be grateful. Also, I’m gay, so. Figured I’d throw that in the pot, too.
If anyone would rather donate some other way than GoFundMe, please let me know. I’ll make a PayPal or something. Also, please ignore my real name on there. I try not to use that whenever possible, because I prefer to go by Micah.
Key take-aways: -be a part of a community. Go out and help clean up your actual neighborhood. Whether you're in an area impacted by a natural disaster or you just see trash on the streets, clean it up. If everyone did just one small thing a day, I'm positive it would all add up.
-be kind to everyone you meet. You have no idea what they're going through or where they've been. Just because they work in fast food, in retail, at a grocery store, or at an entertainment center, their job is no less important than yours. In fact, their job is probably infinitely more important than yours because they actually make the world keep moving forward and society would collapse without them. Being kind costs you nothing.
-do your part to be the change you want to see in the world. The top of that list is voting because your voice absolutely DOES matter. Anyone who says you shouldn't vote is high on the list of people who are greedy and robbing this country of all the things which used to make us decent human beings. I know it's hard, but maintain hope. Keep trying. Vote. And absolutely do NOT stand by and allow the rights of others to be taken.
-give people a chance. We are all only human. Sometimes we make horrible mistakes and if we're decent human beings, we learn from those mistakes. Try to be better every day. Be thankful more often. Express your gratitude and your love for those in your life. Everything can change so drastically and you may not have another chance to show someone how much you care. Being alone sucks. If you love someone, tell them. Always.
-keep working on your dreams. Always. Nothing has to be accomplished at this exact second and sometimes your timing is just off but never give up. One step forward a day is still moving forward. There is no schedule for success or happiness - you just have to keep moving forward.
If by chance Adventure Buddy who took me to the hospital is reading this - it's been several years now. I really am sorry for everything that happened but I understand that things needed to happen the way they did in order for me to learn how to do better. Drop me a note and say hi; it'd be great to reconnect or even work on a creative project together. You remain the most talented artist I've ever seen and I think you would really like making my Explorers trilogy into graphic novels.Anyway, thanks for reading.
WHY START A MICROGREENS BUSINESS?
In this article, we will explain six reasons to start your own microgreens business. In a previous article, we reviewed in detail the definition of microgreen business. There are numerous excellent factors to begin a microgreen business:
1-The market grows
The pandemic C-19 has actually altered individuals’ intake routines. Microgreens have no direct effect on the infection however benefit health due to their dietary properties. Consumers in the Western world are progressively requesting this kind of fruit and vegetables.
In lots of countries, microgreens are popular and utilized, particularly in premium food. These small plants can be a special and ingenious component efficient in improving meals beyond aesthetic appeals by including taste (microgreens enrich meals with unique tastes, from sweet to salty, to spicy and sharp-tasting) and, most notably, by increasing the dietary worth of food. Microgreens are likewise progressively utilized in cosmetics to make hair shampoos and skincare products.
The commercial need for these items is likewise growing. Current research study projections stable growth of 7.5% per year for the microgreens market.
This development trend is anticipated to continue at a minimum of till 2026 [1]. The essential sales markets are the United States, followed by Canada and Mexico, however, the need for microgreens is likewise considerable in Europe.
2- Low financial investment expense
You can begin your business with a couple of trays, some soil, and a couple of seeds and go from there. All the products required to grow a single plant can cost about 2 dollars. With a couple of hundred dollars, you can purchase all the products you require to construct a grow rack (as I will reveal to you later in the next article) and begin.
The other products utilized in microgreens production, such as seeds and product packaging, are not excessively pricey, particularly compared to the cost to sell the produce. It is possible to recover the financial investment expenses in a brief time totally.
3-It is a regional business
Because this is a fairly brand-new business, there are no considerable producers in the market. The item is naturally fit to be marketed by regional farmers who can make much better contact with restaurants and little stores in the location. As you check your strategy and specialize, you can make free samples and disperse them at restaurants, bars, supermarkets, and farmers’ markets. You do not need to have a hard time ending up being a leading supplier. You can slowly grow your business and increase your production as demand grows.
4-Short productive durations
Unlike many adult plants, the production cycle of microgreens is workable. It takes between one and 4 weeks from sowing to harvest, depending upon the range. Such a brief production cycle enables the unskilled grower to specialize and find out in a short time, recognize and lower common issues, and maximize production and performance. You can rapidly decrease or increase output as your sales fluctuate throughout the year.
5-All-year-round production.
Unlike many crops, microgreens can be grown even throughout the winter season in northern environment zones. This is certainly a terrific benefit for anybody who wishes to begin a business. Numerous microgreens farmers I understand to operate in areas of the world where absolutely nothing else can be grown or can just be grown for a couple of months a year.
Microgreens do not see this issue. All you require is a space that is not too cold and LED lights that simulate solar lighting. With these easy ways, you can grow throughout the year without issues.
6-High financial worth.
Microgreens are specific niche items targeted to an audience of individuals who appreciate the environment and their health.
Consumers around the world are voting with their wallets for regional food, picking to look for and purchase from regional growers instead of purchasing food that is transferred hundreds and even thousands of miles. This requirement produces brand-new chances for little farmers to begin or broaden their businesses.
There is still insufficient supply in the market to satisfy needs. Due to the high dietary content of lots of microgreens, holistic doctors and nutritional experts are now starting to advise microgreens to their clients. In addition, microgreens are likewise beginning to end up being popular in the cosmetic market.
Since microgreens bring such a high rate, normally $20 to $30 per pound, growers can get a fast return on their financial investment for seed, devices, and labor.
These components make it possible to use a premium price and make microgreens an item with a high retail worth.
You can break even in a brief duration and make a big earnings margin when you integrate consistent sales methods and progressively effective production.
COMMON QUESTIONS ABOUT MICROGREENS BUSINESS1-How much space do you require?
Growing microgreens does not need much area. That’s more than the adequate area to get begun if you have an extra space in your home. A lot of microgreens growers utilize racks to maximize vertical area.
2-How much you can make?
The average selling price for microgreens is $25– 40 per pound. If you are beginning and growing microgreens on a single level, such as a table, each 10″ x 20″ tray will typically produce 8 to 12 ounces of microgreens, depending upon what you are growing.
That implies you will have the ability to make a minimum of $12.5– 18.8 per tray of microgreens. Lots of growers can produce 50 pounds of microgreens per 2-week cycle in a 60-square-foot space utilizing racks with 4 compartments.
At $25 per pound, that’s $1,250 per cycle, or about $2,500 each month. At $40 per pound, that’s $2.000 per cycle or about $4.000 monthly. When your operation is up and running, you can make $41 – $66 per square foot each month.
3-How long does this business take?
The quantity of time you require to invest each week on your microgreen business depends upon the size of your business. If you’re just growing a lots floorings a week in a side space, then it might be a part-time task that just takes 15 to 30 minutes every other day, plus a little additional time for offering and gathering.
, if you’re running a six-figure (or more!) microgreens operation, anticipate it to be a full-time task plus something else. You’ll most likely require to work with a couple of staff members to stay up to date with need.
Essentially, a microgreens business can take as little or as much time as you desire. As in the majority of locations of life, you will get a proportional quantity compared to what you take into it. There are some economies of scale that you can utilize to your benefit.
4-Do You require a license to sell microgreens?
Among the most typical concerns individuals inquire about this business is whether they require to get some license or accreditation or go through the federal government to offer microgreens. The answer is that it depends upon where you are located.
We’ll cover this subject in more information in a later post. In the meantime, nevertheless, I can inform you that every state in America has its own guidelines, and to discover what the guidelines are in your state (if you live in the U.S.), you can visit your state’s Department of Agriculture sites.
When I began my business, the very first thing I did was register with the state as a business and get my brand name for an individuals farm, and that made me a legal business.
I did much research in my state’s Department of Agriculture and discovered practically absolutely nothing about microgreens.
I talked with some attorneys, and they informed me that in my state, you are exempt from almost whatever if you sell less than twenty-five thousand dollars a year. American law does not appreciate the little manufacturer.
I’m sure I’m in the right due to the fact that I’ve studied my state’s laws, talked with lawyers, and done extensive research study. I recommend you to do the exact same.
I likewise have to state that since I’ve been doing this work, I’ve never ever had a restaurant inform me to reveal them my license or reveal them that it’s legal for me to offer them this item; they are simply delighted to get my product.
5- Is this business right for you?
Initially, you require to discover out if growing and selling microgreens are lucrative in your location. And likewise, whether you are the appropriate kind of person to be successful in a microgreens business.
Beginning a business is not for everybody. You might not remain in a stage of life today where you can dedicate the time and energy to get your microgreens business off the ground.
It might be best to wait for a much better time prior to you begin if you can’t totally dedicate to your service. Getting going in microgreens production enables you to go into brand-new markets and broaden existing markets.
The capability to grow these micro-vegetables in a little area and on vertical racks permits an amazing production idea.
CH. 14 Fieldwork
State: Delaware
Food:
-Delaware makes sure that all restaurants and food establishments have the proper licensing to serve food.
-Most restaurants that I go to do not have labels on their food, even fast food restaurants that wrap their food. Most fresh foods in grocery stores have expiration dates on their food though.
-When it comes to eating out, Delaware has a capacity of 30% of the original to make it a safe eating area during this pandemic and they make sure that all employees wear mask.
People:
-I personally wear a uniform at my job (Skyzone). Most retail companies do not force their employees to wear a uniform. Big companies, like Target and Walmart, require uniforms.
-These people that work at this companies are actually very important to shoppers like myself. If it was not for them, we would not have these everyday necessities.
-If you actually think about it, there are TONS of public employees everywhere you look, a lot more than I ever would have thought.
Transportation:
-While driving, you mainly see stop, yield, and speed limit signs. I have just recently started seeing signs that warn drivers that fees are doubled if you are driving over the speed limit.
-Delaware has done a lot of investing on roads recently. Mainly on Pulaski Highway, there is a lot of night work being done to make the roads smoother.
School:
-School recently has been virtually. Many Elementary, Middle, and High Schools have been doing hybrid where students can come to school once a week with lots of restrictions.
-For me personally, the state has nothing to do with how I pay for school since I am an out-of-state student and go to school in Maryland and not Delaware.
-For Delaware colleges, there is lots of funding every day and week that go into these schools for classrooms, housing, and food, among many other things.
Environment:
-When it comes to all this such as air quality and sewage, the EPA regulates all of that.
Infrastructure:
-The Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control regulates Delaware’s water.
-Delmarva is who deals with most of Delaware’s power and electrical issues.
-The Department's Solid and Hazardous Waste Management Section deals with the transportation of trash and waste.
Public Agencies:
-The government overlooks everything we do, especially on electronics like our phones and laptops.
Social Life:
-You cannot get a license until you are 16 and cannot drive by yourself until you have had your license or blue slip for 6 months.
-Just like many other states, you can not legally drink until the age of 21.
-Delaware is the only state I know that does not sell alcohol in grocery stores, making it harder for adolescents to get it.
-Marriage is fairly simple in Delaware, you just have to be 18 years of age.
-It is illegal for an adult to have sex with a minor in Delaware.
Media:
-News is mainly spread through all media nowadays, such as election news and news regarding the COVID-19 pandemic. They do it through media because everyone is on it, literally everyone.
Absense:
-I feel like ever since states have lifted restrictions of COVID-19, it has been a lot more chaotic is if the pandemic went away but it is only getting worse and they are not putting the restrictions back in place. I believe restrictions need to be back in place until it is gone because it got better but then it got worse once the restrictions went away.
-In cities like Wilmington, there is lots of violence and I think the state should step up to help prevent it.
