Femme Fatale Guide: How To Learn To Love Yourself & Heal From Toxic People
Allow yourself to feel all your emotions and thoughts, authentically and without self-criticism or judgment: Acknowledge that you're grieving. Accept that you need to mourn your loss. Even if it is better to move on in life without these people, it is healthy and completely valid to grieve the relationships you had with these people – regardless of whether they were one-sided, deluded, or otherwise toxic. Allow yourself to cry, be angry, lie in bed, etc. Hit a pillow, sleep in all day on a weekend, or wear a set of pajamas for a WFH day. Give yourself permission to engage in self-soothing behaviors without any type of self-harm or self-sabotage.
Rest, relax, and pamper yourself in your leisure time: Spend time taking it easy – reading, watching TV, doing a face mask or another indulgent skin treatment, using a body massager, cooking dinner in a silk robe and slippers, lighting a candle, cozying up in a blanket, etc. Allow yourself to feel at peace. Create a sanctuary in your space.
Take time for introspection and self-discovery: Being in any type of relationship with toxic people is draining and can cause you to feel as though you've lost a part of yourself by trying to make the relationship succeed. Now, it's time to reclaim yourself after you've courageously cut out these toxic people from your life. Consider and honor your deepest desires, values, interests, hobbies, lifestyle, goals, aesthetic, food, sexual, entertainment preferences, etc. Go on a self-discovery journey to figure out who you really are, what you believe, and who you will work to become as you enter this new, exciting chapter of your life.
Journal, read, eat healthily, work out, drink plenty of water, and sleep: Go back to the basic healthy habits. Try to journal for at least 5-10 minutes a day (using a 5-minute journal, morning pages [writing 3 pages of stream-of-conscious thoughts first thing in the morning], journal or shadow work prompts), make 2-3 whole food, plant-based meals with carbs, veggies, fruits, proteins, and healthy fats, find some ways to incorporate movement into your day – 30-minute walk or yoga session is enough if that's all you can manage consistently, have your body weight in ounces of water daily, and sleep for around 7-8 hours a night. Do some inner child healing by taking care of your core needs.
Indulge in all of your favorites: There's a lot of fun you can have when you have total freedom regarding your daily activities and choices. Give yourself permission to enjoy this solitude. Wear your favorite outfits every day (occasion-appropriate options, of course), including pajamas, loungewear, lingerie, and accessories. Make your favorite meals and snacks throughout the week (incorporating some healthy options in there to feel your best – I love a good oatmeal bowl, frozen grapes, baked Japanese sweet potato, or a hummus and vegetable plate). Watch your favorite TV shows or movies. Indulge in a glass of wine you love or reread a favorite book. Create a masterful playlist. Plan a day of your favorite activities (a long walk, getting a coffee, indulging in a spa day, going to a farmer's market, going to a yoga class, etc.) Treat yourself like your own best friend.
Get comfortable doing things alone: Honestly, no one cares or is paying attention to if you're doing activities alone or with someone else. If someone shows too much interest in your solitude, they're probably projecting their own insecurities regarding their perceived social ridicule. Take yourself shopping, to the nail salon, out for a meal, to the movies, etc. alone. Personally, I love doing most of these things alone anyways. Running errands alone gives you some space to clear your mind and think freely.
Define what an ideal social life and/or relationship looks like for you: Once you've become comfortable with yourself and living life on your own terms, it's time to embrace your desire for human connection and socialization. Consider the types of people you want in your life – their values, personalities, interests, goals, favorite activities, relational boundaries, etc., and where/when/how often you want to interact with them.
Create an action plan: Reconnect with the people in your life who continue to show up for you and have been a light through these toxic relationships and their lasting effects over the months or years. Decide on the places, groups, and ways you'll reach out/try to meet these people. Figure out how to expand your network, and make new connections. Don't be afraid to put yourself out there. You won't vibe with everyone you meet, but it is worthwhile to engage in small talk with several strangers if even one of these new faces, later on, becomes a good friend or acquaintance. A varied social circle is a great way to enrich your life.
Take small steps, then strides: Be gentle on yourself throughout this entire process. It is perfectly okay to take one day at a time during the grieving process. Everyone's healing journey will look different and evolve at a different pace. Don't let these toxic people remain in your heart, mind, and spirit. Remember that you deserve love, kindness, happiness, success, peace, and patience.

Are You Ready For The Tube-Top Renaissance?
Tumblr media
385528 02: Actress Sarah Jessica Parker Stars As Carrie In The Hbo Comedy Series “Sex And The City” The Third Season. (Photo By Getty Images)
The ability to go out again, after more than a year at home, heralds the inevitable reconsideration of going-out tops. This summer, we’ve already welcomed back chainmail halters with cowl necks à la Paris Hilton’s getup from her 21st birthday party and Keira Knightley’s in Bend It Like Beckham. Similarly, cropped cardigans held together by nothing but an inconsequential pin have become regulars in the wardrobes of Bella Hadid, Kaia Gerber, and Hailey Bieber (not to mention our own). With the summer fading into fall, there’s just enough time for one last party piece to have a moment in the sun.
Welcome to the tube-top renaissance.
Like most of today’s trends, the return of the once-maligned strapless top can be attributed to a viral hashtag on TikTok. As it stands, #tubetop has more than 52 million views on the Gen-Z-favourite platform, with thousands of videos popping up daily, featuring styling tips, DIY tutorials, and hacks for wearing the style when you have big boobs. But tube tops aren’t reserved for members of Gen Z, nor is their comeback only present on TikTok. Instead, the going-out top beloved by early-aughts stars like Britney Spears, J.Lo, Ashanti, and Sarah Jessica Parker — whose Sex and the City alter ego wore a bevy of tube tops during the series, paired with a jersey skirt and an arm scarf (Season 4, Episode 13), knit hot pants and a newsboy cap (Season 4, Episode 8), and cargo trousers (Season 3, Episode 13) — is as pervasive in fashion as Y2K itself.
Tumblr media
New York-based Australian designer Dion Lee kick-started the trend’s runway presence when he included a fringe-hemmed tube top in his spring ‘21 lookbook. Later, Christelle Kocher sent midriff-baring tube tops in an electrifying shade of orange down the runway at her Paris Fashion Week show for Koché. Meanwhile, Etro’s colour-filled collection included strapless scarf tops effortlessly tied in front. Saving the best for last, plus-size model Jill Kortleve modelled a black tube top with hot pink trousers — secured with a chain belt, because it is, in fact, 2003 again — during Chanel’s runway show at the Grand Palais.
View this post on Instagram
A post shared by Beyoncé (@beyonce)
Off the catwalk, the strapless style has been spotted on the likes of Kendall Jenner, Beyoncé, and Bella Hadid — a trifecta that could bring even the most hated sartorial item back from the depths of fashion purgatory. In April, the elder Jenner sister was seen on three separate occasions donning various versions of the minimal garment, including a tan leather style worn with matching trousers and a tiny shoulder bag and an orange printed top that she styled with black leather pants. In June, Beyoncé posted photos on Instagram of herself wearing a black patent leather strapless mini by David Koma. Hadid followed suit during Paris Couture Week, when she wore a Balenciaga corset-style tube top with wide-leg joggers for the house’s show in July.
Seeing a Y2K trend on Hadid, though, is one thing. For a trend as controversial as this one to truly be back — especially one that necessitates boob tape and doesn’t take kindly to tan lines — it has to have the peoples’ approval, too. And that it does.
According to global fashion shopping platform Lyst, searches for tube tops are up 79% in the last two months. Specifically: searches for silk, cropped, and halter tube tops have increased by 25%, 27%, and 30%, respectively. Digital shopping platform ShopStyle has witnessed a similar spike, with searches for tube tops increasing by 33%, compared to data from 2020.
According to Alison Stiefel, ShopStyle’s General Manager, “it’s not surprising that shoppers are searching for tube tops this summer.” This season, going-out staples, from party dresses to heels, are back in fashion following a year-plus of loungewear and loungewear only. According to Peter Henderson, the head of the Lyst Index, shoppers are now “acting on pent-up demand for going-out-wear.” Tube tops, being a party-scene staple, fall into that category.
As people look to get the most out of the remaining days of summer, Stiefel says they can wear the top as is “or dress it up with chunky jewellery for an evening out.” (Or, if you ask Jenner, with leather trousers.)
To keep up with demand, brands have included the style in their recent collections, all the while adding new twists to the tops of yore. Barcelona-based jewellery and ready-to-wear brand Gimaguas recently introduced a checkered tube top that transforms into a mini-skirt, styling the multifaceted piece both ways on its website. Fellow Instagram brand Miaou has its fair share of strapless options on offer, including a teal-coloured corset made of faux leather. Eloquii, Victor Glemaud, Sherris, Tibi, and more fashion industry darlings are here for the tube-top renaissance, with versions up and down the minimal-to-flashy spectrum.
Another reason behind the tube-top renaissance? The steadfast return of trends from the ’00s. We’re essentially living in a Y2K time capsule, with old trends, like low-rise jeans, belly chains, bandage dresses, and more controversial styles from the early aughts frequently appearing in new ways. It was really only a matter of time before the no-strap-wonder made its triumphant return to fashion.
Thankfully, this time we have roughly 52 million TikTokers to show us how to do them right — nip slips not included.
Like what you see? How about some more R29 goodness, right here?

77 Valentine's Day Gifts You Can Get on Amazon Prime
Tumblr media
If going to the mall during the holidays drove you nuts before 2020, then Amazon Prime will save your soul now more than ever. Where else can you buy a wool Mackage coat, a sculpted bust of a greek god, a cardboard turntable for cats, and toilet paper? From the comfort of your couch. Naked.
Because there are millions of choices on Amazon and going through the results for even a single inquiry can be exhausting, we went through tens of thousands of items and put together a definitive list of the best gifts you can shop this year with Prime. Our non-negotiable criteria? Items had to be unique, high-quality, practical or chic, because nobody has time for anything else these days. Below, our top picks on Amazon Prime to add to your cart now.
1
Ocean Mist & Sea Salt Candle
NEST Fragrances amazon.com
$42.00
With notes of sea salt, white tea and coconut, this ocean mist-scented candle is a guaranteed crowd-pleaser. (Something that can’t be said for most candles out there.)
2
Gabbi Vegan Leather Handbag
If you follow any fashion accounts, you’ve probably seen JW Pei all over your Instagram feed. What’s less known about the affordable brand is that their bags are made from 50 percent recycled materials and 10 percent of all profits are donated to animal sanctuaries around the world.
3
Polaroid Pop Instant 3×4 Photo Printer & Digital Camera
Being able to hold photos of special moments hits different. Polaroid’s wireless Pop Instant camera is a game-changer for making it possible to take, preview, edit and print 3.5 x 4.25 photos. The easily transportable device also offers WiFi connectivity, so users can upload their pictures straight to the ‘gram if they please.
4
Acrylic Sheep-Shaped Containers
Agirlvct amazon.com
$12.99
Whether you’re shopping for the aunt that does her own thing or your friend with the ironic instagram aesthetic, these sheep-shaped cotton swab containers will just hit different.
5
SLIP Silk Pillowcase
Anti-aging and crease minimizing benefits aside, a silk pillowcase simply just looks and feels luxurious. Because falling asleep these days isn’t easy, this queen size pillowcase makes for a thoughtful gift.
6
14k Gold Three Diamond Amigos Curve Post Earrings
Adina Reyter amazon.com
$675.00
If these diamond curve post earrings look familiar, it’s because Meghan Markle wears them on repeat. To give you a sense of just how versatile these beauties are, the Duchess wore these to Commonwealth Day 2018, throughout her and Harry’s Royal Tour of Australia, and numerous royal engagements in London.
7
The Archisutra: The handbook’s Final Chapter
Createspace Independent Publishing Platform amazon.com
$9.99
This creative Kama Sutra from London-based architect Miguel Bolivar is a good gift for cultured significant others. Each sex position is inspired by a famous building or furniture design with detailed data and annotated scale drawings.
8
Handmade Love Bracelets for Men & Women
Ubuntu Life amazon.com
$19.00
Ubuntu Life, which was included in Oprah’s Favorite Things 2020, provides employment to artisans in Kenya, in addition to running programs that support social inclusion for Kenyan children with educational and physical needs. A handful of colors are still in stock at the time of publication.
9
Premium Bamboo Bathtub Tray Caddy
For a fancy-feeling gift that’s actually affordable, look to this bathtub tray caddy. It has a stand that can be propped to read a book or display a tablet, plus a wine glass holder.
10
Fair Trade-Certified Chocolate Gift Set
Chuao Chocolatier amazon.com
$16.95

11
Open Back Lace Teddy Bodysuit Lingerie
Spice things up with this surprisingly affordable lingerie find. Its delicate lace details and open back lend a glamorous touch.
12
Nonslip Hair Claw Clips (Pack of 4)
Claw clips were already having a moment in fashion before the pandemic. Now that we’re working from home and wearing our hair up every day, they’re all the more useful. These reviewer-obsessed clips boast 3k reviews and counting with an average rating of 4.8k stars.
13
Flex Wireless Earphones
I obtained a pair of the latest Beats (the brand’s most affordable headphones to date) for testing a few months back and haven’t stopped using them since. Delivering crystal clear sound, 12 hours of battery life, and a rapid fast charge, these bluetooth wireless headphones are overall better than headphones I’ve spent at least 4x more on over the years.
14
7/8 Jogger Travel Pants
Editor’s note: I own these joggers and am in love with them. What first sold me on these was that reviewers mentioned how similar these are to Lululemon’s On The Fly jogger, which cost about three times more. Fast forward to me owning 4 pairs and recently FaceTiming with my grandma who was rocking her own pair as well. A great gift for any woman who likes comfortable, flattering pants.
15
Reversible Zebra Bathmat in Grey
Jonathan Adler amazon.com
$63.34
Hey babe, take a walk on the wild side… Not when you’re getting out of the tub though. That’s dangerous in an ER-kind of way. Anyway, here’s a cute, dryer-friendly bathmat.
16
Le Specs. Air Heart Sunglasses
Le Specs. amazon.com

17
OPRAH’S FAVORITE THINGS 2020
‘Tis The Season Huggie Set
Stella & Haas amazon.com

Each page in this delightful coloring book opens up to a different animal and new cocktail recipe.
33
Tombow Dual Brush Pen Art Markers
Editor’s note: I’m a lifelong doodler and Tomboy’s dual tip brush pens are unrivaled when it comes to ease of use and vibrancy. Several color palettes are available in case you’re after something louder too. PS: A bunch are on sale right now, which is rare for the brand.

EDITOR’S FAVORITE

Could you please give us some types for the initial stage of being alone because you have cut all of the toxic people around you?

Meet the Brands Giving Old Fabrics New Life Through Upcycling
Canadian Julia Grieve pioneered the idea of upcycling when she founded Preloved 25 years ago; its offerings include T-shirts, sweaters and loungewear made with swatches of upcycled denim and wool. But despite the brand’s longevity and industry kudos, Preloved’s eco-minded ethos was eclipsed by the fast-fashion giants that dominated the 2000s.
Now that the frightening facts about the environmental and ethical impacts of the garment industry have become inescapable, repurposing fashion has another opportunity to take hold, even at the designer level. “Upcycling is not something that is usually associated with luxury; however, I think this is changing,” says Natalie Kingham, fashion and buying director at MatchesFashion. “Brands such as Germanier and Chopova Lowena have shown that they can be considered incredibly fashion-forward in the luxury space and still have a focus on sustainability.”
Whether it’s humble denim, vintage rugs or glittery lamé, there’s no limit to the textiles that today’s designers can breathe new life into. Here are some fashion brands that are upcycling their way into our hearts:
M Missoni
PHOTOGRAPH COURTESY OF m missoni
In the fall of 2018, Margherita Missoni became creative director at the previously licensed M Missoni. “Before accepting, I started thinking about how I could give it a point of view while keeping it part of the Missoni world,” she says.
She visited the storied brand’s archives and discovered a wealth of materials from its home decor line. The Spring 2020 collection features jackets and coats that incorporate MissoniHome archive fabrics from past decades and sweaters that are made with upcycled yarn.
For upcycling designers, managing expectations is almost as much work as the designing itself. “I’ve never worked on a collection like this—nobody has,” notes Missoni. “At the beginning, it was quite difficult for everyone to adapt—and it’s still difficult. When you make a sweater with upcycled yarn, the first 100 are going to be in one colour; the second 100, the stripe will change to a different colour. The people who sell need to understand that, the people who buy need to understand that and the people who produce need to understand that.”

When Charlie’s Angels star Kristen Stewart appeared on the red carpet for the film’s L.A. opening last fall, there was something more outstanding about her outfit than its bling factor. Stewart was clad in a cocktail dress slathered with upcycled Swarovski crystals by Paris-based designer Kevin Germanier. But unlike some who flaunt their ethical practices to entice an environmentally mindful clientele, Germanier stresses that aesthetics come first in his designs. “I never use sustainability as a marketing tool—I never emphasize the fact that I upcycle,” he says. “I’m not here to educate people or give a moral lesson to someone; my job is to make beautiful products. I’m a designer.”
Germanier sources fabrics at places such as the Marché Saint Pierre and says he’s grateful for all the vintage vendors and people who offer him materials to use in his collections. “Collaboration and the community are extremely important,” he says. “I’m really blessed that people are reaching out to me.”
CALLA

Paris-based Calla Haynes, who grew up in Toronto, found a way to express her creative inclinations in a sustainable way after putting her eponymous brand on hiatus in 2015. “I wanted to do something meaningful with all the fabrics that meant so much to me, and I was also a bit overwhelmed with all the dead stock,” she says about the custom-print textiles that were left over when she shelved her line. Meeting minimum orders and the “wishful thinking” of producing too much in the hope of selling it are two reasons why designers have a hard time escaping excess, says Haynes, who has also worked for Rochas and Nina Ricci. “That’s the strange reality of this industry: We accept having all this waste.”
Haynes initially sent her leftover fabrics to Morocco to be made into Boucharouite rugs but has since expanded her upcycling endeavours to include babouche slippers, which are made from well-worn vintage Moroccan rugs. “It’s funny because those rugs are almost a double-recycling thing since technically Boucharouite rugs are made from old fabric. They’ve already been recycled into rugs, and [now] they’re being recycled into shoes.”

For Montreal-based designer Courtney Pedersen, her reliance on upcycling was born from a tension between loving fashion and loathing its wastefulness. “I studied fibre arts at a small school in Nelson, B.C.,” she says. “That was a lot of years ago, but even when I was doing that, I was pretty concerned about the environmental impact of the textile and garment industries.”
Pedersen’s collection consists of one-of-a-kind garments made from materials sourced in thrift shops like Value Village. “I’ve found everything from silk dévoré to fine cotton gauze to linen there,” she says. “I’ve even used bedsheets. Some people might be squeamish about that, but I think in today’s age of being very aware of what’s happening environmentally, it’s a good thing to be open to.”
Peterson Stoop
Photography by Wessel Baarda
Amsterdam-based Peterson Stoop approaches sustainable design in a holistic way, addressing not only the inherent waste factor but also how harmful elements of creating clothing and accessories can be. Co-founder Jarah Stoop notes that the outlook she shares with Jelske Peterson evolved after they broke into the industry the “traditional” way in 2013. “At the time, we were designing bags and shoes,” she says. “We didn’t really know what direction it would take us because we both came from art school and had all these idealistic ideas about starting a brand—or maybe [they were] unrealistic ideas, because we thought we could produce everything in-house and make a really big collection.”
Now the duo uses existing materials to make upcycled shoes that boast some familiar characteristics—several of the styles use pieces taken from worn-out Nikes and Converse Chuck Taylor All Stars—and their “remastered” wares are a testament to the level of craft and ingenuity that’s routinely ignored in a world of mass manufacturing. “I think a lot of people don’t realize that things in shops have been made by somebody,” says Stoop. “They can be made by a robot, but most things have been touched by 20 or 30 people who have all done little steps in the process. That’s also why we make what we make: to really show that they have been made by hand.”

39 Small Businesses to Support Across Canada Right Now
There’s never been a more crucial time to support local small businesses than right now. As many governments across Canada have shuttered all non-essential businesses – which is all, if not most, fashion and beauty businesses – as a result of COVID-19, it’s imperative that we as a society step up to the plate to help give these companies as much hope as possible. Last week, our fashion editor Eliza Grossman shared her shopping cart picks from five Canadian small businesses and today, we’re sharing a list of 39 small businesses that you can support via shopping online or purchasing a gift card to use once the lockdown protocols are lifted.
