Scenes from the autumnal equinox: drinking pumpkin spice tea from my cauldron mug (plus an acorn measuring cup which I poured some in to leave as an offering on my altar), and working out which poems I was gonna read the next night at 100 Thousand Poets for Change. (September 22, 2023)

Mabon Apple Tea
4.5 cups of water
2 apples
2 sticks of cinnamon
5 pieces of dried ginger
Honey and Lemon (to taste)
Chop up the apples into slices, and then put everything but the lemon and honey into a large saucepan.
Heat on a low-medium heat for one hour.
Pour or ladle through a strainer into your teapot or cup, and add honey and lemon to taste. Enjoy!
I like using this as a home blessing spell for the equinox as well - the apples represent health, the cinnamon represents propserity, the ginger represents good luck, the honey represents love and the lemon represents a fresh start and an inner light as we turn to the dark months ahead. Because this brews over a long time, you can let that lovely apple-cinnamon scent fill your space with warm homely intentions, and then share a cup with those that you share your space with.

Maybon Biscuits
Not a lot of people know that the custard cream biscuit was originally called the Maybon to link it with its sister biscuit, the Bourbon. The bourbon was named after the ancient Frankish spring equinox festival and the Maybon was named after the ancient Celtic autumn equinox. This was an early example of twinning to promote cultural harmony. Both of these festivals involved copious amounts of…

Hey. Kiara sure likes ohagi, doesn’t she?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It’s a cute quirk, but it’s also deeply, deeply tragic in a very subtle way that's hard to piece together unless you know about japanese sweets or Kiara’s personal history.
So let’s learn a little bit about ohagi, and why Kiara loves it so much!
Ohagi, and the very similar sweet botamochi, are traditional japanese sweets made from glutinous rice with a coating of sweet red bean paste and, optionally, a dusting of something else, often ground black sesame or soybean flower.
Here’s some that I made for Kiara’s birthday last year! They’re very doable and pretty tasty.
Tumblr media
Higan is a Japanese buddhist festival celebrated around the spring and autumn equinoxes, and ohagi or botamochi is eaten as a ritual food during that equinox. Sources I found indicated that the difference between ohagi vs botamochi is not easy to pin down, but some say that the sweet is called ohagi when eaten for the autumn equinox. (This is beside the point, but the red spider lily, with which Kiara is strongly associated, also blooms around that time.) If you want to know more, check out this article I found on the history of ohagi and its ritual connection.
Kiara was born as the heir and savior to a mountaintop Buddhist cult. Her upbringing was deeply abusive, and despite the fatal illness she suffered from, for which her community and her father gave her no treatment, she was denied any semblance of a normal childhood while she was molded to be their perfect savior.
Nothing that inspires attachment was allowed to her. The book of fairy tales she ended up with was deemed inappropriate and taken from her because she spent too much time reading it, liked it too much.
It’s hard to imagine her being allowed sweets like a normal kid, since they’re designed for stimulating flavor.
But, of course, ohagi isn’t just a sweet. It’s a ritual food. So they couldn’t deny her that, could they?.
As a child, those 7 days surrounding the equinox twice a year were probably the only time she ever got to have sweets.
And of course, she probably learned to be very careful about not letting on that she was enjoying herself. Not overindulging.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Like fairy tales, it was a tiny piece of happiness that accidentally slipped through the cracks and gave her something to latch onto. And, like fairy tales, she carries it with her into adulthood.
It’s not coincidence that she makes ohagi and tea instead of chocolates for Valentine’s. In this new place where she can heal a little bit from her past and grow, she takes the chance to make ohagi herself, instead of waiting for the proper holiday; and to share them with someone else as a thing she loves, instead of hiding them away.

PUMPKIN SPICE. Through crunchy leaves and orange skies, a sad man walks. Through beautiful browns and fairy lights, a happy woman dances. Of pumpkin and vanilla, the bow on her hair as creamy as the drops in her coffee. Oh, the sad man of rain and dragons, where is he going? Why is he so gloomy as the reddish sun rays hit on his glasses frame? Flannel, and a gust of wind that lifts maple and fabric. It flows on the wind, leaving her neck, traveling through the sky until it covers a cold embrace. “Oh, Oh! Come back!” she runs, following her scarf as it escapes through the fall streets of an old village. “What-?” he asks himself, why his solitude becomes interrupted by such intrusive touch… and why he is slowly falling back, as if such attack had been strong enough? “I’m sorry, sir. My scarf flew away! I’m really sorry!” you try to apologize, to a man with no face. The flannel has covered his façade, there is no way you could see it well. He has landed on a pile of dry leaves, maple, cypress and who knows what more. As clouds, the white skin of his hands give his face freedom, and those intense blue eyes meet yours. Breathing has stopped being natural. “It’s… ok…” he mumbles, giving you back -somehow- destiny. “Here…” “Are you a doctor?” you ask, offering your hand to help him stand up. He nods, the white coat covering his body gives it away, the little tag naming him “Dr. Ishida Uryu” too. That, and the little duck plushie hanging from his chest pocket probably says he is on the children field. Your hands graze, so delicately… so kind. “Are you sick? Do you need help?” You simply laugh. Sick? No. Not all. Help? Maybe, if a croissant with him and some hot chocolate could it be considered “help”. “Well, not exactly… you look tired Dr. Ishida, and I must apologize for the inconvenience… would you like to have some coffee? Hot cocoa, perhaps? Tea if you fancy more?” you ask. His cheeks become red, redder than ever before. Who is this woman? And why is she asking him out so out of the… blue? Or maybe the orange.  “I… uhm- ok” he accepts, somehow his lips couldn’t pronounce a “no”. You give him a smile worth of the sun warmth on a cold, cold day. And without letting his hand go, you pull so that he follows.   At first, it’s difficult for him to keep up with your pace. But slowly, and surely, as if there was no other option available, he starts running with you… along with you. Uryu’s black hair flow with the wind, letting the blueish tints shine with the autumn equinox on that afternoon sky. A smile garnishes his lips and lifts sweet little apples per cheeks. His slanted eyes become even more narrow, and somehow being guided by a total stranger makes him… happy? Happy enough to laugh a little when she turns around; happy enough to finally let go of some trouble of the past. “Here we are! My coffee shop!” “Is this yours?” “Uhum… now, would you like some pumpkin spice latte, Doc?” It surely spiced it all up, you did for him… what could have happened in the next following days of fall?

'tis the damn season
description: you and Atsumu revisit old feelings whenever he comes to your hometown (based on 'tis the damn season by taylor swift) paring: miya atsumu x reader genre: angst
Atsumu knew it was wrong.
He knew that he was just making things worse by stirring up old feelings again. But that didn't stop him from driving to your house late in the night.
The storm made it hard to see, and the windshield wipers on his mother's truck swung rapidly to clear off the rain.
Atsumu was lying to himself if he said he hadn't been thinking about you ever since he told his mother he'd be coming home for the equinox this autumn.
She hummed. "Make any other plans here for the weekend?"
He hated the fact that everyone else knew too.
Thunder crashed loudly as he turned onto the dirt road that your little cottage rested on.
You were a school teacher now.
At least that's what his mother told him, unprovoked. You taught elementary education in the same school that you had both attended when you were young.
When you were young.
Sometimes he had caught himself thinking about those days. Times like these, more specifically.
You were a cute kid, with a big smile that you'd grow beautifully into.
It was always perfect to him.
The porch lights were on and he wasted no time to park and hurry to the front door.
He was kicking mud up, but he didn't care about the mess. He would care in a few weeks, when he would catch a glimpse at the muck on his shoes and feel the stain on his heart ache.
He took a deep breath before knocking.
Just this weekend.
Just this last time.
You opened the door in a fluffy robe holding a cup of tea.
"Hi," Atsumu said, hating the way his voice sounded.
"Hi," you replied softly.
That voice. He missed it dearly. It just felt right, an accent similar to his own. He missed hearing all the nice things you used to say to him. Everything felt right again when he was with you.
He could never admit this to anyone-- even himself-- but when volleyball got hard, and the critics wrote filth about him, he imagined he was with you. And for that moment, he would let himself pretend that everything was okay again.
Just this weekend.
You offered him tea, and he politely declined.
The two of you made small talk as you were sitting in your living room, him on the couch and you in an armchair.
"Have you spoken to any of your old high school teammates-- besides Osamu of course," you joked a little awkwardly and he laughed good-naturedly.
"No, I haven't," he paused wondering if he really wanted to know the answer, "have you?"
You hesitated before nodding. "I had lunch with Shinsuke recently. He has been helping out at the school."
Your response hurt, and he was angry at himself for feeling that way. He had no claim to you anymore. Besides you could call it even, since he himself had a few casual flings.
Even if he only went to bed with them to try and forget the way your skin felt against his.
"That's wonderful," Atsumu said, trying his best to mean it.
Hours passed as the two of you continued to chat, and the conversation slowly turned natural again, like it used to be.
He didn't know when it happened but you were sitting next to each other on the couch now, knees touching.
You didn't flinch when Atsumu slipped and called you 'babe'. And he took that as a sign to slide his hand up your robe and kiss you deeply.
Just this weekend.
Just this last time.
You both knew he was leaving again. It didn't matter if you begged him to stay or if he asked you to wait for him.
You'd stay in bed together the whole day tomorrow and when you'd drift off sometime midday, Atsumu would force himself to leave your warm embrace and head back to Osaka.
He'd leave a polite note wishing you well, even though he knew he was the reason why you weren't.
Atsumu knew that the ache in your heart was caused by his own ache for something more. Unfortunately he was a selfish man with dreams that were worth more to him than yours.
At least he had the fairness to break his own heart as well.
This way, you could at least call it even.

[ SUBJECT INTERVIEW: "DRAGULA" ]
NAME? I was given a name that is no longer relevant. NICKNAME? Dragula has existed in the net since 2071. GENDER? I never put stock into it. Male, I suppose. STAR SIGN? It spans 330 to 360 degrees of celestial longitude.  HEIGHT? Six feet. Or 182 centimeters. I find the metric system to be more appealing.  ORIENTATION? Meat is meat, it serves a function either way. FAVORITE FRUIT? I can almost remember the taste of a pear but the harder I think about it, the more it feels like ash on my tongue. FAVORITE SEASON? I’m partial to the autumnal equinox. Cooler temperatures provide the illusion of cleaner air and the cooling system in my unit is perpetually malfunctioning in the heat, but all things considered, I like to watch the leaves die. FAVORITE FLOWER? The Titan Arum, which blooms only once every decade and smells of rotting flesh. I would very much like to see one some day.  FAVORITE SCENT? Fresh rain on the concrete. For a few brief moments it covers the city in something real.  COFFEE OR TEA? Matcha. I’ve blackmailed a cafe in Kabuki to supply it to me free of charge.  AVERAGE HOURS OF SLEEP? I try for several. I rarely get more than few.  DOG OR CAT PERSON? My mother had a dog when I was still a child, a relentless creature that barked at every whisper. One day the door was left open and I watched it run into the street where a Mackinaw eviscerated it on the pavement. I’ve not seen one since, nor would I want to. Felines have a calmer presence. Quieter, too.  DREAM TRIP? Away. FAVORITE FICTIONAL CHARACTER? I used to watch a cartoon robot on tv. He would take his head off to end unfavorable conversations. I wish I could do that now. NUMBER OF BLANKETS YOU SLEEP WITH? I don’t. This city is an inferno, in fact, I’m not convinced these aren’t the very fires of Hell.  RANDOM FACT? A snake driven mad will devour itself whole. Like a glitch in it’s self-preservation, something inside compels it. Have you ever witnessed such a beautiful act of destruction?

Happy Mabon! Happy Autumnal Equinox! Happy 23th September! Happy Ostara (southern hemisphere)!
Tumblr media
I spent the day resting and the night drinking hot tea with my dearest friends. To celebrate this seasonal change I also baked apples with cinnamon and cloves and I lit a candle the 21th, today and I will light another one the 25th.
May you feel rested, may you share your harvest with your loved ones, may you collect your achievements and have an abundance of love and peace.
Blessed be, as one with nature breathing under the Moon.
