Small snapshot into the life of Aspen Baxter - an astronaut with twins. Her husband was Marc Andrews (a SimLicy save file townie if I remember right) and they loved one another very much. Aspen was the start of my ABC legacy, and began a new save file with her twin brothers who she raised while completing university. They grew up and soon after she met Marc.

Her and Marc had twin babies, as well as one more daughter (not pictured). Aspen was amazing, authentic and a high achiever. She wanted all the accolades and strove to get them. Her life proved awe inspiring. She travelled to space, made the top of her career and owned her own rocket ship. Pictured on the far right is her son Ben, the next generation sim.

Landline is a short documentary about the only helpline in the UK for gay farmers. Through a series of recorded telephone conversations and reconstructive visuals, the film uses the helpline as a lens through which to view the experiences of LGBTQ people in the British farming community.

In a world that prizes traditional masculinity and in which ideas of ancestry are fundamental, being gay can be isolating. Suicide rates are extremely high in both young farmers and gay men in particular, and combining these can be a recipe for tragedy. But there are also thriving gay scenes in the most rural of towns, stories of unexpected friendships and relationships, and moments so unlikely that they could only happen in real life. Candid, intimate and shocking, Landline is a snapshot of a group of people bound together by circumstance but so often isolated from each other.

Fractured Memories | underneath the aspen trees

From ‘A Gust of Rising Wind’

Far away from her home, accompanied by a scalian from foreign lands, Aspen falls asleep, quickly being plunged into a lively night of dreams.

Underneath the aspen trees, three people sit around a small campfire, the light casting a safe circle around them, keeping the darkness away. The two kids are huddled together on one side of the fire, wrapped in an oversized coat. Their mother sits opposite of them, weaving stories both true and otherworldly, of great serpents flying through the sky and oceans with waves licking the sky. Around them, far away, the world is slowly fading away, towns turning to overgrown forests, spirits vanishing on the wind. But here, underneath the yellow leaves of aspen trees, the world is safe.

“The queen was at her wit’s end. And as the void grew closer, she wasn’t sure if she had the strength to keep her home safe,” the mother exclaims, her words howling with the winds. The desolate choir sends shivers through the two kids. Seren, much smaller than her brother, pulls the coat over her head, hiding. The boy laughs, wrapping his arms around his sister.

“But what happened then? Did she manage to find a way?” the boy asks. He has heard the story countless times before, but every time it felt like a new journey.

“She looked up at the night sky. Back then, the sky was nothing like the sky we have now. It was a dark canvas, still unpainted and empty.”

From underneath the coat, two brown eyes peak through the opening, looking up. The stars sparkle above her, a warm greeting.

“The sky was empty?” she asks.

“That’s right.”

Their mother gets up, raising her right hand above her head. With one swirling motion, she spins around, casting a dark sphere around the three, shutting out the stars. Surprised cries are heard from underneath the coat, Seren popping out in awe.

Mother points towards the campfire, drawing eager eyes, and with a single flick takes away the light.

“This is how dark it was that fateful night,” she whispers. “And the darkness was coming for them, everyone could feel it, a lingering sense of dread approaching.”

Seren climbs onto her brother’s lap, both intrigued enough to come out of hiding, but still clinging on to the safe embrace of her brother.

“And after a while, the night sky gathered into a single beam.”

Mother extended her hand and, from the edge of their dark sphere, pulled a beam of purple light. She froze it as it reached their middle, a snapshot of dire times.

“But at this dire moment, the queen realised that she knew something that could stand against the night.”

One hand holding the purple ray in place, she opened the palm of her other hand, showing the figure of a young woman formed in yellow light. She made her run around the circle, leaving a single dot or light at every footstep. With a flick, the queen jumped towards the beam, which Mother let free at the same time. The two collided, the beam pushing against the queen’s body until it fractured into a thousand small lights, exploding outwards, scattering against the edge of the black cloud. Between these lights, the purple ray could not survive, shivering away.

Mother closes her hands, letting their black shroud fade away. The splinters of the queen’s love for life as a whole, her determined spirit to stand against the night, splattered against the dark canvas, each lined up perfectly with the night sky.

“Be careful,” her brother says, taking the arrow from the bow and rotating it until the feathers have been turned around. “if you put your arrow in the wrong way you’ll damage the feathers at the end.”

Seren nods, her face strained in concertation. Her brother pushes her elbow up slightly, a warm hand pushing against her back, straightening her.

“There you go, now pull the bow a little more and release.”

Seren pushes through, muscles screaming, until the whoosing sound of the fleeting arrow satisfies her. It flies through the forest and past their makeshift target, landing in a brush behind it. Seren sighs, falling to the floor with her head down.

“Well done! That one was way straighter than your previous shot,” her brother exclaims, the big smile on his face befit to those of a teacher.

“I still missed.”

“This time, but who knows what journey the next arrow takes.”

“Why can’t I learn magic like you and mom?” Seren asks, her eyes turned towards her brother, pleading.

“Mother says you can’t start with magic when you’re still too young, it may hurt you,” he replies. He puts his arms underneath Seren’s shoulders and lifts her up into the air.

“Come, if you hit the target this time I’ll take you hunting later.”

The proposition is considered and quickly deemed agreeable. She nocks the arrow, properly aligned, and straightens her back. With one eye closed, she aligns the tip of the arrow with her target–

The ground rumbles, shaking birds out of their homes. Seren trips over, an early release shooting the arrow into a nearby tree. Leaves rain down on them, a fragrant yellow blizzard. Her brother looks around for the source, finds none.

“That’s the second time this week…” he mumbles to himself.

“You can’t do this to us. I need you, Seren needs you!” he whispers. Although his voice is lowered to allow his sister to remain asleep, the words are filled with an intense burning.

“I wish there was another way, but the Empress has gathered everyone with an affinity to magic in Omsenia to figure out what is happening to our world. I–”

She pauses for a moment. Her son in front of her holds a concerned face, eyes riddled with disbelief. She looks over to Seren lying in the corner, an oversized coat as a blanket.

“I think that I know what is going on. I can’t stay here with that knowledge. You must understand that.”

“Then take us with you. Omsenia isn’t that far. I can help you there. I’ve been doing my practice routine every day. I can even shadowstep for a short while. I’m sure Seren would love to see the world too, all she knows is this forest.”

Mother closes her eyes, her gaze cast downwards.

”No, if you come with me, you’ll be taken in for your magic too. You have to take care of Seren from now on. Promise me, Ako. Promise me you’ll keep Seren safe.”

The aspen leaves have turned red. Each day more fall from their trees, colouring the woods in scarlet. It was nature’s final brushstroke until the world would turn white and brown. An arrow flies past, fleeting, straight, landing in the centre of a wooden target.

Seren takes a deep breath, lowering her bow. Her coat is no longer oversized, purple sleeves ending at her wrists.

“Seren!” a voice shouts out from behind her. Her brother runs towards her, a piece of paper screaming in the wind held out above him.

“I’ve managed to get a description of the boat mother set out on from a sailor travelling to Dalen. I think I know where it was going. We can finally begin searching.”

Seren sighs, nocking another arrow and releasing it into the wind. Unaffected by the storm, it lands only an inch next to her previous shot.

“I don’t want to go south and join a cult of wizards spreading lies.”

“They managed to stop the rumbling! Isn’t that a good thing?”

“They didn’t save anyone except themselves, and you know it.”

“There’s a chance mother is still alive, we have to go looking for her, what if we can help her. Don’t you think she’d want us to help?”

She nocks another arrow, releasing it too quickly, an anger fuelled arrow unable to hit home. “No, I don’t think she wants us to.”

When Seren wakes up, she finds a letter on the table. I’m sorry, it reads on the back. She picks it up and, without reading it, throws it into the smouldering remains of her hearth. In moments, her brother’s words become one with the flames, gone forever. Without a word, she takes her coat, her bow, her arrow. Her only belongings. It takes her weeks her to reach the city of Burgundys, though city is a generous term. A mountain made of stone rubble and wooden scraps. The last bastion of the north almost reduced to dust.

As she makes her way over the frozen lake she falls to her knees, exhausted, starving. Between the rubble, a soncheon runs out of the gate. His steps are calculated, having traversed the ice a thousand times, as he takes her on his back. He gently puts her down on his chair, the fire sharing its warmth. He passes her a piece of bread.

“Are you okay? What’s your name?”

She nods, each movement inching her closer to a blackout. Names flood through her head, but those names don’t feel fitting anymore. They are foreign to her now, distant, haunted.

“I’m Aspen.”
