marta svetek -- voice of gregory, vanny, roxanne wolf in fnaf: sb and its dlc, ruin -- has joined kellen goff in voicing her thoughts on ai reproductions of her voice. again: if you want voice actors to maintain a living wage (and their own mental health), please respect her wishes and ensure that this kind of behaviour is heavily discouraged in the future.
full text of thread below the cut for brevity:
Been getting tagged in all kinds of posts and popular TikToks of people using AI voice clones of my FNAF characters to have them sing or say all kinds of random stuff.
You might think it's fun.
But really it's contributing to the problem all VAs are facing in the wake of AI.
The more these AI voice clones get used, the more they're normalized, and the more businesses see it as a viable alternative to real VAs when making content for you. Slowly but surely, most of your favourite VAs will be out of work.
Not to mention what this will cost in terms of future generations of VAs. Incredible performances we'll never get to experience because most businesses will more often than not go for the cheapest, quickest option as soon as the technology is up to scratch.
This is made even worse by the fact that we currently have very few legal protections against the unauthorized use of our voices using AI. And we're being pressured to waive those too, for a fraction of their worth. This is one of the big reasons the current strikes are a thing.
If you enjoyed my work in FNAF and have any respect for the amount of time and effort VAs put into bringing characters to life, don't use AI voice clones in your fanart. I can't express how violated I feel every time I hear my voice say words that aren't my own.
And just in case it wasn't clear - I have never consented to having my voice, likeness or any of my performances synthesized into AI voices/avatars etc.

there's something to be said about how disrespectful it is when people feel entitled to an artist's works. this includes highly popular artists, especially when they probably have to deal with a lot more of that entitlement overall.
i can't help but remember how one of my favorite artists (simon stalenhag) essentially got chased off the internet because tech bros felt like they can just use his art without permission. because he's popular and draws cool machinery. the fact that nft bros fucken harassed him when he refused to make his art into nfts (and thus often stole his art to mint), and now ai bros time and time again sampling his art because they want to steal his style. its even more infuriating when you consider the context of stalenhag's art - the fact that it's very critical against capitalism and technology gone awry which harms both humans and the environment. the fact that the torment nexus fans are literally appropriating the "dont build the torment nexus" art.
it's just... why can't people respect artists more? why can't they respect the themes and messages within the art? there are so many better ways to show your appreciation towards the artist which doesn't involve such extreme entitlement.

I've almost finished this set of FFXV illustrations, so a PSA (Public Supes Announcement): if you like this set and want to see more like it in the future, consider supporting me on Patreon.
My patrons are the reason I can keep posting images for free on the internet, and I wouldn't have finished this set without their support (or enabling).
That's all. Stay cool out there.

I love ninjago for so many reasons but the way personhood is never a doubt does something to me
It’s never even a question if artificial life forms count as people. Even way back in season one when Zane found out he was a robot, it threw him for an existential loop but all his friends were like “oh wow, huh… kinda explains some things, you’re still you though.” There’s the internal tension of questioning one’s own identity and self-worth, but his loved ones love him nonetheless. New information doesn’t change anything — he’s always been a nindroid, just as he’s always been Zane.
In season three when we meet Pixal the gang is concerned at Zane’s willingness to give up half his power source for her, not because they don’t think she’s a person but because he hasn’t known her that long. There’s the short lived question of her allegiance, but Zane confidently argues that she has free will just the same as him when not under the overlord’s control. The whole situation reads more like being surprised at how serious this new relationship is than questioning or invalidating Pixal’s autonomy.
And then, of course, we have Prime Empire. When Okino — an NPC — is told that the world they’re currently in isn’t real he is quick to denial, but as soon as the truth becomes inarguable he falls into a depressive episode. His whole life is fake, everything he sees is fake, he is fake. Even as Okino vehemently argues that he should be left behind, that his presence as part of the game puts them in danger, that their enemy — the creator of said game — could use him against his new friends, the ninja refuse. They firmly tell him “No, you’re our friend. You’re a good person and we trust you, trust yourself too” and it just freaking breaks me for some reason.

I have a Ko-fi!
This exists! I just... keep forgetting about it. ┐(︶▽︶)┌
Like my work? Want to send me a treat to reinforce the good vibe rewards for an art series you're a fan of?
Like any small creator support for my work is game-changing. It makes my work more and more legitimate as a source of income. Ko-fi has donation options and shop options. It also usually has commissions, but I'm going to pause those until May so I can take a quick break to recharge a little bit.

No shade towards this user! But I would actually love to address this statement or thought process.
(And its actually £37 for you!)
But nonetheless, there are many things to consider when you’re criticizing an artist for the price of their works and here are a few!
How much time goes into the process of a piece(s)!
For example, I made not only one zine, but two in the span of 7 months. While working a 40+ hour a week active job. So all my free time was consumed with this zine. You may think $43 is a lot for a zine, but I am just one person make a whole NSFW zine. I wasn’t one of 20+ artists and fic writers putting one piece into a whole zine. And I won’t undervalue myself and my time! Also, most of my commissions, for one custom piece, cost more than not only my nsfw zine, but both my zines combined.
How much time goes into the technically side of the piece(s) (I.e. creating the actual zine with printing companies and sizing and resizing, and shipping and handling artists usually handle themselves)
For myself, it was hours and hours of file converting and resizing and in the end it still didn’t look good in zine previews, that’s why I decided to go digital.
The exclusivity of the artwork(s)
You’ll find a lot of things of this nature are either limited time products or exclusive to the product itself! For example, all my pieces in my NSFW zine, are for the zine supporters only, as well as my SFW being half favorite pieces and half new, zine exclusive pieces!
The content of said artwork(s)
My zine for example, is a “taboo” type of artwork, it’s basically a book full of porn. Not a lot of artist draw porn and even less nsfw artist, share it on social media! But here I am, sharing a whole exclusive zine of porn for two lovable characters! Oh, and as trans characters haha. They’re t4t in my zine because I draw the representation I want through my favorite characters!
* And in the end really! *
You’ve got to understand, as artists, we are putting out so much free content on social media. Whether it’s every day, every other day, once a week or once a month. You, as a consumer of our work, get free content (both old and new), all for free! Is that not wild?! For example, people pay $10 a month to see all the porn I’ve ever drawn on Patreon on then get to see the latest porn and sfw stuff I post! Ive been told by so many friends that I should charge more even! But that’s not the point of this post.
Artists could never share again, or put their craft and skills behind a massive paywall, but we love sharing and putting art into the world, cause fuck, a world without art would kill me. I literally love scrolling through my social media and seeing all my mutuals and artists I follow share their work and interests through art. I love seeing their minds work and what they felt so proud of to share it with the world.
And on top of that, if you think something is a bit too high in price, just remember all the free content the artist puts out, remember what art piece you love the most from them and why you followed them in the first place maybe! And by purchasing an item(s) from them, is a way of showing them support for all the joy their art has brought you 🫶😊 and just supporting artists in general vs large corporations who usually underpay their artists or just straight up steal art.
**In the end, I won’t undervalue my time and skill for a quick sale cause I’ve had people happily support me at the prices they are and I’m so grateful te for them.**
*** No artist should undervalue their work! We have a skill and took time to create this skill and study our skill to become better and better 🫶***
I do hope that anyone with the same mind set as this user, might have a new POV on the artists side/ BTS side of an artist and content creator when judging their prices.
