Summary: The one where two parts of the soul found each other after thousands of years.
Tumblr media
They felt like all the air was taken from their lungs, and everything they heard was the beating of their own heart. Her eyes couldn’t leave the silhouette of the man standing before them. They only saw his dark eyes, and even if they saw them for the first time, they felt like they knew them better than anything. They watched how he raised his tattooed hand and uncovered his face, and they couldn’t help the small smile that came into their face. Masked people could start shooting every second, but at that moment, they could die as a happy person - they just saw the most handsome man on this planet. They saw it for the first time when they were awake but knew it was a face they had seen in their dreams. At the sound of his raspy voice, their heart lost a beat. The warrior moved closer, walking behind his people when Rick behind them said:  “I already told you I got him”. The Egyptian looked at them and felt silent for a moment. They could see a surprise in his eyes - as some memories had come to him. Both of them felt like everything was on the right track. It didn’t matter that the creature was alive - two parts of one soul found each other. They never wanted to believe in love at first sight, but when he stood before them, they couldn’t stop their heart from longing for him. Ardeth made himself raise his eyes at the American.“Know this, this creature is the bringer of death. He will never eat, he will never sleep, and he will never stop.” He moved his eyes at the women between them. “If you want to survive, leave this place.” At this moment, they could only watch his dark eyes, and then they nodded.“We will.” They hated how weak their voice sounded at that moment, but they could swear that the corner of his mouth rose just for a second, like he’d stop himself from smiling. They looked at each other before he turned and walked after his people. They didn’t turn their eyes, watching his silhouette disappear in the darkness. They couldn’t stop thinking about him the whole ride to Cairo. They tried to be helpful when Rick and Evelyn argued - they helped to patch up poor Mr Burns and rested a little before they’d tried to help Evy find a solution. They heard the woman screaming that it was their obligation since they woke up the monster, and they couldn’t agree more. When they were washing their hands, the water turned into blood, and they couldn’t stop a scream from their mouth. They were terrified when the fire started falling from the sky. It was a shock to see the man from the Hamunaptra in the museum. They exchanged a few looks, and it was enough for them to find a little peace in this madness, and for the first time in days, they felt safe. Madiaj told them the story of Imhotep and they started to get hope that they really could find a way to come out of this alive. When they finally agreed on what everybody needed to do and started walking to the car, they looked back at him one more time and smiled when they realised that he was watching them. “Miss/Mister…” he came closer to them, and they knew that Evy and Rick slowed a little while waiting for them, “Are you hurt?” At their surprised look, he moved his hand to point to a bloody stain on their clothes.“Oh, no... I’m not hurt. I was washing my hands when the water turned into blood...Thank you for asking. It’s very kind of you, Mr…” They smiled gently and noticed that the corners of his lips moved a little, just like he was close to smiling. “Ardeth Bay.” Her smile grew wider when they told him their name. The longing of their heart for him was surprising, just like how their body responded to even the smallest smirk. They wanted to know him better, even if they already felt that strange similarity in his presence.“I hope that all of your people are alright.” They wrapped their arms around themself to stop themself from trying to touch him. “They are.” They breathed with relief, nodding. “But they won’t hesitate to die if it will stop this creature.” Ardeth saw that pain came into their face hearing this sentence. He wanted to take it away from them, to hold them and keep them safe. He didn’t understand why he felt so attracted to them, but it was a nice feeling. They were like a breath of fresh air in the heat of the desert, and he wanted, no, he needed to feel it again. “I hope it won’t be necessary.” They heard Rick calling their name, and they turned to look at him. They knew that it was the moment that they should go. With every minute, Imhotep was closer to winning. They nodded at him and moved their eyes to the Egyptian. “Mr Bay, please be careful. I… I hope we meet again.” They gently touched his arm and moved to join Rick and Evy. Before they left the room, they looked again at Ardeth and smiled, and they could swear that for a few seconds, he did the same. Not everything worked in their favour. Egyptologist and Henderson were dead, Imhotep was nearly regenerated, and the only idea to beat him was only a legend. They anxiously walked after Rick and the rest of the team. Twisting their fingers, they watched how Evy tried to find the location of the Book of Amun-Ra. They were so lost in their mind that they didn’t notice Ardeth coming closer to them. He gently touched their elbow, making them jump. He looked at them apologetically, and they smiled nervously. “We met again.” He smiled at them, and they couldn’t help but laugh quietly. “We did. However, I hoped it could happen in a little calmer situation.” They looked straight into his eyes and felt like their heart had stopped for a moment. “I… I know it will sound weird if anything in that situation could be normal. I feel like I know you. Not from now, but like… like my soul finally was whole just by meeting you. It’s probably a wrong time to say it, but I felt like I had to do it.” They looked down at their shoes, feeling ashamed. They were afraid of his reaction, but who knows how long they would live. However, they didn’t see the smile forming on his face. He gently touched their chin and made them look at him again. “I know this feeling. Of everything being completed and in peace only because… you are here, next to me. I don’t understand it wholly, but maybe it also was destined in ancient times.” “Maybe that is the answer.” They smiled and touched his hand. Not caring about decency, they rose on their tiptoes and connected their lips. They felt his other hand fall on their hip, and their heart started beating faster. They found him, and they knew that whatever waits for them in future will end up happily. Two souls destined to stop the evil from ancient times found each other again. Like many times ago, they find a way to win.

Ardeth Bay Headcanons
As well as his native variant of Arabic, he is fluent in a number of other regional dialects, and proficient to fluent in English, French, German, Italian, some Coptic and some Middle and Late Kingdom phrases.
Is an avid reader, especially of poetry. He'll pick up any volume of poems he can, ancient, modern, or anything in between, in any language he knows.
Poetry and storytelling are extremely popular pastimes amongst the Medjai. As well as readings, Ardeth writes some poetry of his own.
When they are invented and he gets a chance to experience them, he loves roller-coasters.
Drinks alcohol sparingly, but has been known to indulge in pomegranate wine if he's feeling laid-back.
Beverage of choice is strong Turkish coffee, which he drinks anytime he has the water to spare.
Has a sweet tooth, and gets sparkle-eyed for strawberry tarts when he first tries them while visiting the Carnahan-O'Connells in England.
Strong coffee + sweet tooth means his favorite treat would be a cafe mocha, full fat milk and whipped cream with cinnamon on top.
Has a younger sister, Nesreen, with whom he is very close (even though she is prone to teasing him, as little sisters do.)
His mother is deaf, so he signs with her using a Medjai variant of Arabic sign language which incorporates some of their signal codes and other gestures.
Has always had a falcon named Horus since he was first old enough to learn. Horus I was presented to him by his father. Subsequent birds all take the name (Horus II, Horus III, etc.) like a little dynasty.
Has cultivated a good rapport with a merchant in Cairo who makes and sells the highest quality soaps and emollients. Ardeth keeps his spare money aside to pick up the best shampoo and hair oil when he's in the city. Those luxuriant locks don't happen by accident.
(He may ignore the question, if asked about it, but Nesreen will happily spill the beans.) If he shares his hair care secrets and products with you, you have made it to his innermost circle.
Surprisingly good with children. When interacting with young kids, he will squat down to talk on their level, face to face. Enjoys giving piggyback rides to young family members, and lifting them up to sit on the saddle in front of him when they are too young to learn to ride yet.
Has a great dry sense of humor he shows only around people he's comfortable with (and when he's not in Serious Medjai Chieftain mode).
He inherited the knife with the elaborate handle (seen on his back in the first film) from his grandfather.
Slow to open up and trust people, but once you've earned it, you have a friend for life.
With thanks to @nnobodoodles, @belphegor1982, @picklebrinedgoblinmind, @nooneleavesforgood, and @tinydooms for letting me share some of these before and sharing some of their own ideas with me for brainstorming! ❤

"Can't say I'm familiar with it either. So, er, what do we do about him?" Jonathan asked, not quite looking at the dead man at their feet.

30 Days of Fanfiction
I think I may have done this particular challenge before, but if so it was a looooong time ago, and sometimes things change, perspectives and understandings change, so, I thought I would have another go around.  So here goes:
Day 1: How did you first get into writing fanfic, and what was the first fandom you wrote for? What do you think it was about that fandom that pulled you in?
Depression.
Maybe a strange reason for getting into fandom, since Social Media is being blamed a great deal for the rise of depression, right?
Anyway, the fandom was The Mummy (1999) - although actually it was The Mummy Returns that drew me in.  It was the only thing that would get me out of the house, and I must have seen the movie about 7 or 8 times - roughly about once a week that I was on medical leave from work. Of course after a while it wasn’t enough; definitely not enough Ardeth Bay, and so I went looking for Fan Fiction, because you can’t get enough of Ardeth Bay (Oded Fehr), not at all - so I guess that was what drew me in.
At the time it was on a site other than AO3 (which shall remain nameless). I read, and I despaired.  Okay, I’m not full of myself really, but I am an educator with an English major, so the quality of the fic - well... it made my eyes bleed. I thought, “If this is not the fic I want, then...” Yes, you guessed it, “I should go ahead and write it myself.”
That’s exactly what I did. That fic was Power Is, spawned two ‘sequels’ (one of which - I am ashamed to say - is still unfinished), and several other fics in the same fandom.

Summary: The one where she was hurt.
Tumblr media
She woke up with a throbbing head, feeling her mouth dry. She looked around, and after a few seconds, she realised she was in the bedroom she shared with her husband. She tried to sit up, but suddenly stabbing pain rose in her arm, making her fall onto the bed breathlessly. She tried to recall what happened, moving her hand to a place that hurt and found a bandage under her fingers. A few days ago, Ardeth and a few of his trusted men went to check on some illegal digging. Not long after it, some travellers came into their village. With one of her best friends and great warrior, Rashid, she kept an eye on them. She provided them with the help they needed and did everything to keep as much information about Medjai secret. All at once, everything went south. They took out the guns, screaming to prepare all the goods for them. She tried to talk them out, to calm the situation, but it didn't help - soon, one of them kept his gun to the head of a local girl. The chieftess' heart stopped in her chest when she tried to take her place. What the attackers didn't know, they chose the worst time they only could. By the corner of her eye, she noticed Fahran - the right-hand man of Ardeth, and that meant that they all were back. He quickly took the attacker's attention to himself as she jumped to help the girl. She hit him in the nose and took the girl in her arms, shielding her with her body. She moved them to leave this place when her eyes met the well-known irises of her husband. She smiled softly, knowing that now everything should be better. However, fate had different plans. A loud bang was heard, just like the scream of the girl next to her. She felt a burning sensation at the top of her chest. She looked down and saw the red stain start showing on her chest. The last thing she heard before she fell on the floor was Ardeth screaming her name.
She tried to move, trying to sit against the headboard. Her tired mind noticed movement by the door, and she moved her head to the side. She looked at Farhan, who smiled at her and then shouted for his chief in Arabic. Not even a minute later, Ardeth came into the room and fell on his knees by the bed.
"Ya Hayati*. You're awake!" He gently caressed the side of her head, and she closed her eyes at this reassuring gesture. "How are you feeling?"
"Tired… And my arm hurts." She looked up at him and noticed how worried he was. She smiled when he moved the hair away from her face and kissed her forehead.
"Would you like to drink something?" At her nod, he stood up. He leaned over her, carefully wrapping his arms around her and helped her to sit. He tried to gently support her body, but a quiet groan left her lips nonetheless. He mumbled an apology, kissing the side of her head while she caressed his back. He brought a cup to her lips, and she gratefully drank its contents. She immediately recognized the taste of the tea that women in the village made to get rid of pain, and she was grateful to have it now. When she had enough, Ardeth whipped the drops that fell on her chin.
"How is that girl? Was someone hurt?" She was watching him when he placed the cup on the cupboard and sat next to her.
"She is alright." Ardeth took her hand in his and squeezed it. "A little shaken up, but nothing happened to her. Rashid already checked on her twice." He chuckled softly, and she couldn't stop smiling forming on her lips. "Aziz got himself a black eye, but no one was injured. Except for you."
"Twice? He must be bewitched by her." She bit her lip, mindlessly starting caressing the back of his hand with her thumb. "I feel like she was in danger because of me… I should do more to stop them, to make them go away much faster."
"Ya Hayati, you did nothing wrong. You gave them the help they needed, and they used your good heart. You made sure that our people could run when they took guns. You shielded this girl with your own body. It was not your fault." Ardeth brought her hand to his lips and kissed the back of it. She looked into his eyes and nodded, trying to believe in his words. "You scared me terribly…"
"I'm sorry, ya Amar*. I'd promise it won't happen again, but it probably would be a lie." She smiled sadly, squeezing his hand. "I was so relieved when I saw Farhan and you."
"I'll keep you safe. This time I won't fail."
"Ardeth Bay, you never failed me. And I would argue more about it, but I'm too tired right now." He couldn't help but chuckle. "Would you lay with me? I missed you."
Her one look was enough for him to agree. He knew he should check if the whole situation were cared for. He should go and tell their friends and family that she was awake and only needed a lot of rest. But even the thought of leaving her alone was too much right now. He helped her move a little on the bed and lay down. Her every hiss of pain went straight to his heart. With his help, she found a comfortable position that allowed her to snuggle into his side. He placed a few kisses on her head until she looked up.
"You know that you can kiss me? I mean a proper kiss."
They exchanged lovesick smiles, so similar to these at their wedding. Ardeth placed his hand against the side of her head, caressing her cheek with his thumb. He leaned his head, gently tucking her nose with his. He  knew how impatient she was for his touch, and he smirked when she tried to catch his lips with hers. He kissed so lightly the corner of her lips, and at her disgruntled grunt, he finally kissed her. He kissed her slowly but deeply. He cherished that she was by his side after these few days and that she was alive. He perfectly knew that if this bullet hit her a little lower, he could lose her, lose part of himself. It was all that mattered, they were together, and he promised himself he would double his efforts to keep her safe.

Take My Hand, I'll Start My Journey (1)
A couple of things before we get this party started...
The title needs a little work. The story does too. All of this is completely unbetaed, so if you're reading and all of a sudden it's "damn, scruff, what the hell happened here?" it's all me. I'm trying to edit as I post, but we'll have to see how well that turns out.
My computer keeps freezing whenever I try to copy/paste the entire story, so I'll post it in parts. They'll eventually all be up, no worries.
This is a female!reader-insert fix-it fic of The Mummy Returns, with the pairing of Ardeth Bay x f!reader. Did I rewrite the movie with a reader character? Essentially, yes. This fic covers the entirety of the movie from the second-person perspective of the reader.
For warnings, whatever's in the movie, assume it's here. Additionally, there is mention of the reader sustaining previous injuries, one of which has left her unable to have children (if I ever write more of this, that will be addressed in more detail then). The reader and her sister, Faith, were nurses during a war, and Faith was killed. Reader's father was killed in WWI. There's some reliving of embarrassing moments, including mentions of behavior while the reader is under the influence of a medicinal substance (which will also be further addressed should I write any more of this). There's 'damns' and "hells", two 'bastards' and one 'son of a bitch' for the profanity.
The reader works as Alex's governess.
I tried to avoid any physical descriptions of the reader. If you see any glaring mistakes, lemme know.
If I've forgotten to mention anything, my bad. Just send me a message.
Here we go:
Part 1 (no Ardeth, yet)
“Alexander Rupert!” The frustration in your voice was tempered by the fact that you were panting.  And leaning against a crumbling statue for support.
“Uh, I can explain!” The sandy-haired boy held up his hands in surrender and slowly began to back up towards the tunnel he’d just exited.
You growled as you pushed yourself up and started stalking towards him.  “No, you can’t.”  You gripped his shoulder harder than necessary and maneuvered him back towards the entrance of the temple.  “Do you hate me or something?”
“No!  I don’t hate you!  Why would you think that?”
You eased up on your grip and sighed.  “I know you think I’m no fun when I make you stay put, but kid,” you stopped walking and squatted down to look him in the eye. “I’m here to make sure you stay safe on these digs.  That’s what your parents hired me for.  And if I can’t keep you where they told us to stay and you get hurt, they absolutely could fire me and leave you at some boarding school when they travel.”
“They wouldn’t!” He immediately wrapped his arms around your neck, gripping you like you’d vanish in front of him if he didn’t.  “You’re part of our family.”
You sighed again and returned the hug.  “Even if they didn’t, I would be absolutely devastated if something happened to you.  Because you’re my family too.  Ok?”
You felt him nod against your neck and pulled back.  You tousled his hair as you stood up and he immediately scoffed, putting a grin on your face.
“Come on, Alex,” this time, you held out your hand and he took it, letting you lead him back to the temple.  “I think we should continue working on your engineering lesson.”
“You remembered the cheese this time?” He looked at you skeptically.
You pulled a wadded handkerchief out of your pocket, opening it slightly to reveal the wedge.  “Oh, ye of little faith.”
Tumblr media
Once you had made your way back to where Rick had told you and Alex to stay, you went to your bag and pulled out the schematics Alex had completed before you’d left London.  Looking over them, you had to admit the kid was brilliant, and while a lot of it was due to his parents, you took pride in having at least a small part in it as your role as his governess.
Of course, a typical governess would be teaching the child in the comfort of a home, but you’d jumped at the chance to take on a job that would allow you to see and do more than spend your days in a stuffy room teaching from a boring text.
Not to mention, giving you the built in excuse to avoid dresses of any kind.  Something your time as a nurse didn’t allow.
And, you adored Alex, the whole family, really.  Even that ridiculous uncle of his, once he’d learned that you wouldn’t tolerate him attempting to charm you.
You just wished Alex would stay put, once in a while at least.
“Alright, kid, here’s your plans.”  You handed him the papers.  “I’ll gather the materials, and you start building.”
“I’m going to need sticks, and twine.”
“I’ll go get some sticks.  There’s twine in my bag.  And don’t even think about using the pocket knife to cut it until I’m back.”
As he started stacking bits of broken pottery that were scattered around the room, you dropped the cheese on the ground next to him and headed out of the temple.
Tumblr media
You were on your second run for more sticks so Alex could “build a better mousetrap” when you heard horses approaching.  Alarmed, you dropped everything and dashed towards the temple, skidding to a halt just as three armed men stalked through the entrance.
“Damn.”
This wasn’t the first dig-site you’d been to with the O’Connells where others had turned up.  Most of them had been armed with some sort of weaponry, but all of them had excavating tools.  These men didn’t, and you felt your heart drop to your stomach.
No tools meant nothing good.
As quietly as you could, you snuck in behind the three men, your eyes frantically searching for Alex.  You were able to draw in a shallow breath once you spotted him hiding on the scaffolding.
“Knock, knock.  Anybody home?”
You locked eyes with Alex just after sneaking behind a statue.  You pressed your finger to your lips, probably unnecessarily.  The kid wasn’t stupid, but his nod helped to ease a miniscule amount of your fear.
If only you could get to your bag and grab your pocket knife--maybe that would ease a little more.  Unfortunately, even after one of the men left, there were still two guns between you and your knife.  And really, what good would a knife do against one gun, let alone two?
Options.  You needed options.  You needed something.  Anything.
Maybe, if you could get closer to one of the tunnels leading further into the temple, you could draw the men towards you and give Alex a chance to run for it.
Not the best idea, but if it kept him out of harm’s way…
Holding up two fingers, you mimicked a slingshot, then pointed at the men.  Alex nodded again and slowly pulled the item out of his pocket.  Once he was ready, you counted down with your fingers.
As soon as the man cried out in pain, you darted towards the next statue over, tensing up behind it when you heard the cocking of a gun.
This was it.
Except, no shot came.
“This place is cursed.”
You rolled your eyes.  Sure.  Cursed by an eight-year-old.
You gave it a couple of minutes for them to get distracted by more of the pottery before you chanced peeking out from your hiding spot.  You caught Alex’s gaze, nodded towards the men, then counted down.
He hit his mark and you made your run, only to hear Alex let out a laugh.  It was short and quiet, but you still heard it.  And if you heard it, the men probably did too.
Damn it!  You were so close to the tunnels, maybe one more statue, and you could make it and lead them away.
Forcing yourself to swallow your fear, you waited another few minutes, hoping the men would get sidetracked by more ancient items and forget if they’d heard anything.  You gave Alex the countdown and hoofed it as fast as you could.
“I’ll take care of this.”
Your fear rushed back, tenfold, and you felt the room begin to spin.  They must have spotted you.  Except, looking around the statue, they weren’t headed in your direction.  Instead, they were heading straight towards Alex.
You were left with no choice.
You ran towards the tunnels, not caring about staying hidden.  “Over here, you bastards!”
Alex’s gasp at your profanity would have been comical if this wasn’t life-or-death.
“You get her.  I’ll get him.”
No no no no no!  They were both supposed to follow you!  You had to think fast!  Except, the sound of yet another gun cocking left your mind completely blank.  Running was your only option--you couldn’t save Alex with a bullet in your brain.
You led your pursuer down a tunnel, trying to remember the turns you were making, hoping you could double back and intervene before the other man got to Alex.  As soon as you saw an alcove, you ducked into it, praying that the man would rush by you.
“Come on, sweetheart!  I won’t hurt you none if you just show your pretty face.”
Finally, after what seemed like years, he was past your hiding spot.  As quick as you could, you hurried back the way you came.  In your hurry, you slammed up against the wall, the thud echoing.  Gunfire, and the sound of bullets ricocheting off stone, followed.
“Damn it!”  Shaking off the pain from your collision, you kept moving until you were back in the temple.  You spotted the other man, knife between his teeth, attempting to climb up the scaffolding, just before the man who had originally departed came running into the room.
“Spivey! Jacques!  Let’s get the hell out of here!”
The man who had been chasing you immediately took heed.  “Come on!”
The man after Alex slid down the ladder he’d been climbing and kicked one of the scaffold’s support beams before following after.
“Alex!”  You ran to try and keep the entire thing from falling, but you miscalculated, and pulled too hard on the wobbly structure.
“Watch out!”
The scaffold swayed in your direction, and you moved to try and avoid having it fall on you.  “Jump!” you screamed at Alex, holding out your hands to grab him.  He fell into your arms, hard, knocking you backwards into a pillar.  The force of your hit toppled the pillar, starting a domino effect of each pillar knocking down the next, all the way around the circular room.
“Wow,” Alex breathed as you set him down.
“Your mom’s going to kill us.”
Before you could stop him, Alex ran to try and keep the last pillar from falling.
“Alex!  It’ll crush you.”  You ran after him, tackling him out from under the pillar as it collapsed into the wall, knocking a giant hole into it.
Water immediately rushed into the room and you and Alex shared a look of bewilderment before turning back to the sudden flood.  The two of you looked at each other again, even more confused, when Alex’s parents washed up at your feet.
“Mom, dad.  I can explain everything.”
You smiled ruefully, knowing exactly what would happen when they learned just how close to danger their son had been.
“You see, there were these men--they were bad men, and ______, she tried to lure them away from me, but only one of them followed her, and the other one came after me when I hit one with my slingshot, and then they all ran out and ______ caught me but I knocked her into the pillars and it’s my fault we broke the wall.”
Evelyn and Rick looked up at the two of you, identical looks of…something…on their faces.  You couldn’t tell what was running through their minds.
“Are you two alright?” Evelyn finally asked as she pushed herself up, a little squish sound with every movement.  “Either of you hurt?”
“I’m ok, mom.”
“What about you, ______?” This time, it was Rick who asked.  He was still on the ground, looking completely exhausted, his hands clutching onto some sort of box.
“I’m so sorry, I really thought they both would follow me, but they didn’t and I had to double back and--”
Rick held up a hand to silence you.  “Alex is fine.  Are you?”
“Oh, um…yeah.  Peachy.”  You offered your hand to help him up.
He grabbed it, making sure you saw him roll his eyes as he hoisted himself to his feet, putting minimal weight on you.  “Let us know if you start feeling less than…’peachy’ and we’ll see about calling a doctor once we’re back in London.”
“I’m so glad you’re both alright.”  Evelyn wrapped the arm not used to hold her son around your shoulders.
You stiffened slightly in surprise.  They weren’t going to fire you?
“And you, young man,” Rick pointed at Alex, who made a show of gulping, “You owe ______ an apology for sneaking off from her earlier.  If we have to pay her extra for chasing after you, it’s coming out of your allowance.”
“Aw, dad!”

An injured bird flapped desperately to the Medjai camp before crashing in the blazing desert. A man in black saw the bird on the horizon before it crashed and rushed to it on horse-back.
The falcon lay unmoving, half-dead in the sand as the desert heat scorched the poor creature’s back. It’s wing was twisted at an unnatural angle, it’s feathers matted crimson as blood seeped through it’s gaping wound.
The Medjai warrior scooped up the fragile bird in his arms, quickly mounting his horse they galloped at full speed towards the camp, the falcon clutched in his arms.
The warrior quickly entered the chief’s tent with the falcon in his arms, a grim expression on his face. The chiefs were gathered around the table on which the warrior laid the bird. One of the chiefs gently took the bloody message from the falcon’s foot, about to read it before the bird gently squawked.
The chiefs stared at the bird in shock, it seemed the same stubbornness that ran though his master’s veins powered through the falcon. Seeing the falcon’s spark of life, a woman arose from her seat at the corner of the tent. Gently taking the falcon in her arms, she said a few quick words to her father, one of the chief’s, before dashing to her tent.
She quickly set to work, patching up the gaping hole in the bird’s wing before setting it’s wing into place. Upon his broken wing she placed a stick before wrapping it in cloth to support the poor creature’s wing.
Although it’s bleeding had been stopped the bird was still not out of the woods. The woman painstakingly fed the bird water with a piece of cotton, drop by drop.
After she had done as much as she could to help the bird, she laid it to rest in a soft nest she had prepared in a wicker basket within the tent.
She then set out various jars of ointments and salves in preparation for the wounded which would surely flood her tent as the battle drew nearer. It was her responsibility as their healer to tend to the injured, as the women in her family had, before her.
~
The battle had commenced and the Medjai had rode to the battlefield, ready to face their old foe, prepared to die fighting, to protecting the world from the curse they had spared it from for centuries.
Hours spent in anticipation as she awaited the Medjai. She eagerly watched the horizon until finally, she saw them, riding on their horses, bringing with them the dead and the wounded.
She quickly set to work, cleaning and sewing wounds, applying salves and comforting the wounded. Adrenalin coursed through her veins as she swiftly traveled from one cot to the next, checking on the fallen.
After she had finally checked on the last wounded soldier it was almost midnight. The pale moon glowed in the desert as she made her way towards her tent. Slumping in seat she observed the plate of food placed on her small table. Her stomach rumbled, reminding her that she’d skipped dinner. She slowly bit into the bread and curry they had provided her with.
She was about to continue eating when she heard a chirp in the corner of her tent. The falcon she had healed was peeking it’s head out from the wicker basket, chirping at her.
She smiled, rising with her plate before sitting closer to the falcon, feeding it tiny pieces of bread.
‘The poor thing must’ve been starving,’ she tentatively thought.
After feeding the falcon and checking it’s wound, she retreated to her bed, bone-tired from the events of the day.
~
Ardeth had heard the shot in the air, followed by the pained cry of his beloved companion. In that moment, his heart stopped. They’d shot him! They’d shot Horus! He had been his companion for years, constantly at his side in even the hardest battle and now, his dear friend was killed without mercy. Left to rot in the cursed forest among creatures who would feast on his body, an undignified and shameful death for an honorable companion whose bravery could rival that of a tiger’s. He screamed his name is pain, yet there was no response, there would never another response from his greatest companion.
Although this death pained him deeply his grief would have to wait, he knew that without his brave companion, the Medjai would not be able to arrive to fight the army of Anubis. He had to figure out a way to get the message to the Medjai. And soon.
~
A few months later:
Taking care of the bird had been...an experience, to say the least. He was a stubborn one, always picky about what he ate and unwilling to let up on anything. He even had the audacity to glare at her when she stayed up too late!
Finally, after months of healing, the falcon was finally deemed ready to fly. The poor bird had been cooped up in her tent for far too long. The falcon seemed...almost excited to finally be out of what it probably deemed as ‘confinement’.
The falcon sat on her arm as she exited the tent, the bird perked with excitement before promptly taking off. Startled, she stared at the flying bird before giving chase, following it through narrow lanes and wide ways, through the camp until she saw the bird land on the arm of a man draped in black. A Medjai with his face covered.
~
It had been a painful journey, grieving Horus while also performing his duties. He was returning after patrolling on the night shift. He was on the edge of the camp when he saw it, a bird that looked exactly like Horus flying at him, at full speed.
He raised his arm, out of muscle memory, for the falcon to land on.
The bird landed on his arm and chirped at him. Staring at the falcon in disbelief, he had tears in his eyes as he gently brushed the falcon’s soft feathers. He was brought out of his trance by a soft giggle near him.
“Hello. Who are you?”
“I could ask you the same. I am Ardeth Bay and you are?”
“Oh, so you’re the infamous Ardeth Bay. I’m Y/N, the healer.”
“I have heard may great things about you, Y/N. They say that your hands were blessed with the power to bring a man back from the brink of death.”
“I have heard many a tale about you as well, Ardeth Bay. They say your bravery is unrivaled. Even my father was impressed by your great feats.”
“How long have you had this falcon? He reminds me so much of my companion, Horus.”
“Oh, just a few months. The poor bird was shot in the wing and flapped desperately to get here with a message.”
“Wait...You..I can’t believe it!! This is my bird! This is my Horus! Oh, how I grieved you, old friend. How-I thought him dead ,” he said to the bir- Horus.
“He almost was, the poor thing arrived at our camp with a hole in it’s wing and a bloody note on his leg. I cleaned and stitched him up. This is his first flight after a few months of being grounded. Looks like he’s a loyal friend, he found you again,”
Breaking the tension that settled over them she said, “Ah, Horus is a cute name, I was calling him The Godfeather.”
Chuckling at her pun, he asked, “Why?”
“Have you seen him when he glares?”
“Ah, I have been on the receiving end of that look multiple times. But please, tell me. How can I repay you, for without you Horus would have certainly perished.”
“Oh, no. I need no repayment. I am just glad that you’re reunited with your friend.”
“I insist. Please. At the very least, dine with me.”
“Okay. But let me tell you, this is a one-time thing.”
“I look forward to our meal together.”
“I do, too. I shall see you later, Ardeth.”
~
And so, one dinner turned into multiple and soon, the Medjai and the healer were inseparable. The soldiers in the Medjai were glad that their leader had found someone who he could rely on, someone who made him happy and most importantly, someone who brought him peace.
As the years went on, under starry skies, children whispered the stories of The healer and the Medjai who were united by a falcon named after the God of the Sky.
