Hey! Question from one wannabe game design graduate who is also an artist and wants to make their own (very simple) little game one day - how is it like working on a game set to release one day? Did u feel discouraged learning a new skill (?) after already being a pro artist? Was the game a random idea or have you guys been planning this since a long time? Firstly THAnk you so much for being into Sorry We're Closed - it's my lil bby pride and joy so I'm glad someone out there in the wider world is looking forward to it! I'll try and answer your questions in order and not ramble too much! I'm a little older now, and gotten to that point where deadlines aren't so scary anymore. There's a point in which you learn to live with what you can make, rather than trying to make something that's not what's within your ability (which is why we always want more time to get better while we work). But after a while you just realise its better for the idea to be out there in the world where other people can see what you were trying to do! Admittedly i will do a lot of hours sometimes if i REALLY want something to be a certain level or if I'm particularly stuck on something , but a deadline keeps me realistic. It allows for the thing to be good and exist, rather than perfect and existing only in my mind. Learning a new skill was actually extremely exciting. I wanted to absorb everything like a sponge. I hadn't done any 3d modelling before 2020 seriously (i tried zbrush once in like 2015 and i kept crashing my computer lol). I just wanted to keep going because it was so fun seeing my creations come to life! I always dreamed of designing game characters and it was literally happening before my eyes. Also, the indiedev community is extremely kind, helpful and resourceful. There's lots of free knowledge out there, and people who are willing to talk to you and help you figure things out! Being trained as an artist honestly only helped the modelling endeavour. Having an understanding of anatomy helped my understand how I wanted to approach the form of my models - what needed to be shaped and what I could get away with painting on.

So my knight is about 934 verts/1,861 tris (sort of like a ps2 character) but painting can give some fun depth. I've found this method to be really tricky though as it's highly prone to unflattering angles - but thats partly cause I'm still learning and relying too much on my skills as a 2d artist I guess. This model I made a bit later on, the Sorry We're Closed models I made were far earlier before i really knew what i was doing so they rely even more on my painting skills

but I felt it was okay since we were going for a nostalgic game feel which means some funny deformities like this

but it's whatever, i think it's kind of cute lol. We started planning the game in 2020 as well, literally after I saw my partner Tom make a character model move around in Unity (it looked pretty terrible) so i said I'll make models and he would code. Then I came up with a story, and from there we came up with how the game itself would play. Game design itself is something we were both lacking and real experience in so that has been the biggest wall to climb so far but its been a really fun and rewarding journey so far. Anyway sorry for the ramble!! I really hope you get a shot at working on a project you really love and want to pour everything into!

i read the mandalorian comics in between volumes of berserk, which feels a bit like saying i took a break from watching the evil dead franchise to watch some cocomelon.

the mandalorian comics are a remarkably uninspired nearly shot by shot breakdown of the episodes. not in the way most film/tv comics are, where they’re very clearly traced screencaps, but screenshots redrawn. this would be interesting if the artist was not contractually obliged to the very flat marvel comics style. i am constantly reminded of how the mandalorian is simply…not very good. it’s entertaining as a spectacle of television to watch, but there are not a lot of fun ideas in there. something that made me fucking scream with laughter are these panels of baby yoda

i have viewed the first four episodes of Fire Force, the urban fantasy mercenary firefighter anime and do not think i will be continuing. while i have a great many questions about the worldbuilding (gravitational anomalies?? genetic predisposition to spontaneous human combustion?? solar god nuns??) it has a dead mom plot, which i am allergic to. this is also a 7.5-8 on the Ass part of the Weeb Ass Shit scale, and has a lot more casual assault than i try to encounter in anime. it's by the soul eater guy, remember the level of Stuff going on in soul eater? a little bit more ramped up groping and stuff that makes me say out loud "wow i don't like this" than soul eater.

it will be arriving on friday bc that is when the strapping young men who own trucks are available. my front door is a very non standard size and i have a very awkward front stair, so i needed something that could fit under the overhang while standing on its end. this one was the best size and (fortunately) the cheapest at $150. it is some sort of extremely flammable early polyester and 100% has a grandma’s soul trapped within its fibers. i will probably buy a cover at some later date to deter miss macaron but in the meantime we will do the strips of brown painters tape, which does successfully deter her. this really really does not want to be steamed so i will also be procuring some chemicals.

I am of the headcanon that they are both autistic (by human standards, at least) and also not predisposed to typical displays of romance. I am not fully against more tender affectionate wavewaves in a more traditional sense but I feel like it's easy to over-do it and end up with them being OOC.

an aromantic partnership built on mutual respect for each others capabilities and devotion to the decepticon cause. they have an admiration and appreciation for each other, but are close partners for the sake of collaboration and reaching shared goals. they keep each other in check. (+ maybe there's also a domestic aspect to it. the casual intimacy of living together, sharing personal space and dividing chores.)

or a relationship where literally no one else can even tell they're together. they're often seen together but no one really bats an eye. because their idea of affection...doesn't look like typical affection. to others it just looks like they're discussing technical shit and swapping information for work purposes, when really that's just their idea of a fun conversation. they're not really trying to hide it. in fact, if you knew this was how they flirt, you'd say they're being too overt.

or the idea of them babysitting each others "kids" is funny. the cassettes pranking shockwave. or shockwave putting the casettes in HIS big booby chest. soundwave looking after a bunch of fuckin bugs or predaking or whatever shockwave's little guys are depending on the continuity. because soundwave isn't the only dad, shockwave also usually has some kind of "minion".

I'm into G1 and TFP wavewave mostly. Cyberverse wavewave is good too, but it's a different kind of dynamic because they're both grumpy assholes in that show and have a rivalry. TFA wavewave is fine but they don't know each other and don't have much in common, not to mention TFA Shockwave is old as hell while Soundwave is a few months old so there's a vast difference in life experience as well

We have yet to see how Earthspark wavewave could be, but i think it could work based on what we know of them individually.

anyway. i am sooo tired this post is losing steam but i think beyond the most surface layer of "she's a cunt because she's legally fucking bound to be lmao" there's the whole childhood trauma that the inherited Literal horrors serve as blatant metaphor for. being an old ass woman born in the early 1900s when violent physical abuse is the normal response to your child fucking up will in fact turn you into sort of a cunt. i think her character is in a way very reminiscent of that one type of old person that's intent on being better than their family before them but can't--literally, in her case--honestly/accurately communicate their experiences or emotions to their family and just sort of stumbles around brusquely trying to do their best for them without explanation. like she's very used to the parents being de facto the bad guys that know what's best 2 protect their children from the external horrors whose decisions (which are often internal horrors seen as better than the external horrors) just have 2 be suffered thru by the kids 4 their supposed ultimate wellbeing. so she does that. cycle still has a hold on her despite her attempts to save her family from some of it because no one person can shake the family legacy. books that are about the horrors of family legacy Grabbing You and not letting go no matter what you do. and she cannot articulate any of this because no one in her position knows how to articulate it, because she Literally Due To Magic Metaphor can't articulate it. am i explaining this coherently at all. i dunno i'm just endeared to her character writing so far i think she serves rlly well as a poster child 4 the way cycles of trauma glom onto you & subsequently as smth for blake to be compared to as he becomes the new poster child. it's a good book!

i always like writing his family i think they have such a fun dynamic. i know the perfect parent lyall thing is on the rise but i just find that so boring and unrealistic im sorry...i dont think he was evil or anything i think he loved his son a lot but the idea that r is going to be attacked bc of his shitty views and overnight hes going to get over them and never hold or carry any of that forward...be a bit more serious. also just think that r is quite a reserved guy so it figures that lyall might be too and like a loving parent who is bad at communicating that love/communicates it through fear rather than affection is not so crazy. i always sort of imagine his dad expressing his love by being very very worried about his son and how the world will respond to him and that translating into him being quite strict with r and thus making their relationship a bit fraught. also yeah lol like idk the kid had little to no contact with kids his age/experience with friends until he was 11 i think maybe that stays with you a bit even if ur parents do everything they can to compensate. idk i think making him an exemplary parent is just the most boring thing you can do considering his son is so clearly a little bit fucked like. idk! but im glad you enjoyed it, thank you!! : ^ ))

And then you buy the DLC and you play as the big, strong, veteran uncle who just PUNCHES THINGS INSTEAD OF USING WEAPONS AND IT SOMEHOW FUCKING WORKS and guess who the big bad is! You’ll never guess! You’ll never figure it out! That’s right! It’s Jack Fucking Baker for the fourth god damn time and now he looks even more disgusting and corrupted. Although the game did not include Leon (it held Ethan Winters, a darling father), it’s still set in the same universe so I feel like you can get a pretty good… idea from all of that, yes? Remember ! First of all? Not related to my view on him but he’s was… kind of misogyny-coded in the original Resident Evil 4 and that makes me giggle a little but I still somehow prefer that RE4 to the 2023 Remake. I know I reblog gifs of the remake a lot and that is simply because, I mean, who doesn’t enjoy experiencing their silly guy with better graphic quality, right? But I don’t like the alterations they did to certain scenes and dialogues. Also he looked like this in the original re4 which scares me more than the undying mutated abominations so, I. Well.

Okay, okay, anyway…. I HATE how the fandom views him, it stresses me out. They view him as this demanding, super serious, violent, brooding man who just wants a stupid, ditzy, useless girlfriend he can dominate, control and be a creep towards but that’s… not him? Like, how do you mess up so bad. This isn’t a particular part of the fandom as much almost the majority of it, sadly.

I feel like he’d, if anything, be a “wife guy”; he has a stressful job, he is traumatised beyond belief, he looks death in the eyes on a regular basis, he lost his parents when he was young, he has went through a-lot. And yet he’s so gentle, he still believes in saving everyone. He still believes in humanity and has this hope in him. He is still… soft. I don’t think he’d be a controlling or aggressive partner; I think he just wants something comforting to come back to, and he’d be SO grateful to have a partner who sticks by him through thick or thin, he’d be so genuinely giddy while taking about them. He lost his parents for fuck’s sake and got stuck in this godforsaken infected world when he was just 21… he wants home, I think more than anything he wants to come back to a place where he doesn’t have to think, where things can be handled for him and all he has to do is let himself be loved. Praised and acknowledged for once in his (somewhat miserable, let’s be honest) life. I mentioned, while answering Lucy’s ask, that I view him as a guard dog, and I think that’s perfect for him. He exists to protect — he has dedicated himself to that protection, to offering that canopy. His aggression is never on the offence, it has never been; not once, but it is done as a protective measure. If the years have reduced Ajax to a sword then they have reduced Leon to a shield. He just wants his efforts acknowledged — he just wants praise and warmth and comfort — and yet are they ever? At-least, to the degree they deserve? He falls into a depressive state in Resident Evil: Vendetta and it stings. He is such a simple man and I genuinely believe domesticity could fix him. He has never known what it’s like to feel safe — why would anyone want to force him to be a protector even in his partnership, even in intimacy? Let him relax for fuck’s sake. Let him. know what it’s like to be on the other end for once in his life. Comfortable clothes, hand holding on a warm cup of tea rather than a gun or a knife. No news channels and no social media or nothing. Phone on DND. I do not care if the USA burns to the ground, I want him to rest his head on my shoulder and finally get the sleep he hasn’t had in years. Civilian lives can wait a few hours to be saved.

in part 5, carmy mentioned hooking up with reader changed his view on sex and relationship. does this implied his past experiences has been not so good? he doesnt seems like somebody who has a traditional view on sex either. can you elaborate on that? also the angst and the YEARNING in ur fic is immaculate !!

okay, we will get information in character (I have a section lined out where Carmy and reader talk about their pasts) - however - it's not that the experiences were bad. But, read on more if you wanna know my head-canon/ideas about Carmy and his relationship to sex

(putting under read more because it got lengthy)

Carmy has low-self esteem outside the kitchen. We see this in his monologue and how he views himself (calls himself not funny, struggled with a stutter at an early age, highly competitive, obsessed with his work/being the best, suffered verbal abuse from chef in NYC).

In canon, I actually think Carmy could fall on the ace spectrum - I also don't think it's implausible to say he could be a virgin/sexually inexperienced. However, for the sake of the fic, I wanted it be believable--and I couldn't imagine Carmy abruptly hooking up with someone and losing his V-card in that way. (I know virginity is fake but whatever lmao). Anyway, I wasn't about to be like "This guy has never fucked but also somehow knows where the clit is and carries around condoms." LDSFJKSLFJ.

Anyway, I think Carmy would have a very utilitarian view on sex. Like sex serves a purpose. People have sex to have children, to have fun, to blow off steam/stress, etc. Sex isn't a priority for him and I'm sure he heard PLENTY of stories from Mikey, too, which possibly allowed him to live vicariously through his older brother/whom he saw as his hero.

I don't think he views sex as shameful in anyway. It just comes down to time + energy. Carmy only had time and energy enough for Work/The kitchen/the Thing He's Good At. He doesn't have time/energy for relationships/dating/getting to know people.

In the fic, he refers to having 2 notches on his belt (meaning he's had sex with 2 people total, including the reader, so he's still pretty inexperienced).

Spoilers for the fic? I headcanon that Carmy had sex one time, while in culinary school, to just experience it. Maybe it was at a party, maybe it happened during a stressful finals week or something, like who knows. He just needed to try it on and see what everyone was talking about.

I could see a girl coming onto him and doing so strongly - (Carmy wouldn't make the first move, are u kidding? In the fic--the reader is the one who kisses him first LMAO but I kept it vague because reader is unreliable). and Carmy having just enough time/energy to give it a shot. He doesn't have any condoms, but thankfully she does, and he's seen porn so he knows what to do.

It's a little clunky, awkward, but she's more experienced than he is and they manage. Afterward, Carmy is just like "Okay...so that's sex, then." And shoved it to a back corner of his mind. LMAO.

Again, having sex isn't important to him. In the fic, it's actually the connection between the reader/himself that's tethering him, like the sexual chemistry is an allure for the first time ever in his life, but beyond that--he genuinely feels something for the reader, a kinship with her, and that's a very strong attractive quality.

I'd say his sexual experience (prior to being with the reader) was underwhelming. It didn't reshuffle his priorities. However, with the reader, this connection has arranged his priorities in a new, scary way.

Like, I don't think his views on sex are traditional in the like monogamous sense of like "You should only sleep with your partner". Carmy doesn't strike me as a judgmental or shameful person. In his eyes, sex is practical, but like, so is masturbation and he's probably got enough time/energy to quickly jerk off in the shower before work when he happens to be horny for whatever reason (I also think grief and stress and anxiety effects the libido so there's that to take into account).

ever since i saw a post about the idea of sonic (jokingly) being a sort of wind god, i’ve had so many thoughts in my head abt an AU that goes like:

Ok so an AU where Sonic IS a wind god who lives up in, idk, God Land w/ some other gods.

Anyway, one day he decides to drop down to the mortal plane for fun and to experience the world he’s helped create, bc sitting around blessing mortals n stuff gets boring after a while.

Basically, mans skydives outta god land without telling anyone & its all fun and games until he crash-lands in a field head first (& surprisingly does not lose his memory).

From there, he’s found and rescued by Tails and his magical golem. Sonic wants to hide the fact that he’s a god, so he feigns complete amnesia… until Tails decides he wants to try and help him recover his memories. Then Sonic claims to have recovered some memories the next day. He makes up a very odd yet mundane story abt his life. Is his tale believable? …Ehhh if you squint hard enough🤨.

And eventually a plot begins where someone in the story needs, or is trying to get, the 7 Chaos Emeralds or something. idk. Is it Eggman trying to get them for nefarious means? Is it one of the good guys getting a prophecy to gather the 7 emeralds? Someone else entirely? Dunno.

Anyway some lore stuff I have cooked up:

This is basically a fantasy rpg-like setting with magic and kingdoms and all of that. Technology would probably exist, but it’d be magically fueled u know? Like a “phone” being a specific crystal fueled by mana that allows voices to travel long distances or smth.

Tails is a self-taught magic scientist. He’s gone as far as to create a Golem from scratch in his off-time by the name of Emerl. Emerl is seen as odd for a golem, as he wasn’t built with a personality or directive in mind, rather, he was built to form his own personality & directive by observing others. At the start, he mostly takes after Tails & Tails’ friends. Now he also gets to take after this odd, lackadaisical, cocky, yet soft-hearted stranger by the name of Sonic. Yippeeee!

Amy is a paladin (thanks SF:SB) who is the retainer to Princess Blaze of Soleanna. She’s got an eye for strategy (shoutout to whatever Forces was trying in that regard) and presents a more level-headed exterior in the public, but is truly just a peppy, bubbly girl on the inside (& off the clock). She hangs out with ppl like Tails & Cream when she can.

Silver is a mage and oracle-in-training who’s the retainer to Princess Elise of Soleanna. He’s usually cheerful, naive and optimistic, but also has low tolerance & respect for people who bother him (stares at the Sonic Rivals Duology Silver. I love that little punk).

So yes, Blaze & Elise are related here. I mean cmon SOLeanna? SOL dimension? SOLaris??? BOTH CHARACTERS RELATE TO FIRE IN SOME WAY???? CMON!!! Anyway Elise & Blaze are step-siblings & Elise is a bird.

Anyway, there could possibly be a “kingdom” for each of the gods?? I could see characters who’d fit as important royal-like figures corresponding to each elemental god, but im not sure of that yet. At the least, we got the Soleanna Sisters

There are mortals who’ve been blessed by certain gods. Some examples are Tails being blessed by “Sonic” [whatever Sonic’s god name is], Blaze + Elise by Solaris, & Knuckles by Tikal.

Speaking of, so far, the gods I’ve thought of are:

Sonic (Wind), who looks like Super Sonic in his god form & any mortal depictions of him. However, he disguises himself in a different form (that’s just his normal blue self in-game/media) when dropping into the mortal realm.

Tikal (Earth), who looks like her usual in-game self. Also, those blessed by the Earth God are the only ones with notable healing capabilities. While anyone who’s blessed by a god has better self-regeneration than those not blessed, only those blessed by Tikal are can directly heal others.

Chaos (Water). aka the God of Gods. Almost never seen by the other gods unless its something important. Sonic, being the youngest of the main gods, has never actually seen Chaos in any way shape or form. VERY picky about who gets their blessing. Probably doesnt even bless people anymore, actually.

Solaris (Fire), who im not sure what looks they’ll have. Maybe literally how they look in 06 (which i think is just some weird… bird-like shape of light? Or maybe they look like Crystal Mephiles? Or a bird anthro? Maybe they shapeshift when they feel like it? Can Solaris split themself into Iblis & Mephiles or is Solaris just one entity? Much to think about.

??? (Light). There’s a “Fallen God” who was once known as the God of Light. After a certain incident, they were branded as the God of Destruction and banished to the mortal realm with his memories wiped. The God of Light is hardly known or worshipped in the mortal realm after most traces of their existence have been removed. These days, those blessed by the God of Light are few and far between, to the point where it’s become a mark of misfortune to have such power. Hmmmm I wonder who this Fallen God could beeee 🤔

& there may be another character or two who could fit the role of a god but idk off the top of my head.

now i am someone that, bc of my sheltered upbringing, likes to experience things that I'm curious abt. this includes relationships. i'd like to try them bc i like the thought. but also there's this idea in western society that relationships need to happen Naturally. which trips me up a bit as someone who 1) can't just Go Out And Meet People and 2) don't like the traditional ideas of relationships (meet > realize we're "in love" > all the gushy shit or w ever). like it's very incidental & i like to do things On Purpose. n maybe that's a little bit my need to have control over things. just a little bit.

theres also the fact that itd need to be, initially, a ldr bc the above mentioned Can't Just Go Out. which a lot of ppl don't like i've found !

oh yeah. there's also the thing where i am. let's see here. black, trans (in a "weird" way)(and pre-everything), so many types of neurodivergent & mentally ill, not very active bc of chronic pain, stuck w my family & cant drive, and pretty strictly t4t. all things that make Living Amongst Other People sort of Uncomfortable, specifically around ppl who don't like to acknowledge that they might have internalized some Bigoted Shit, and like to make it My Problem.

i cant. remember where i was going with that. like i think I'm trying to go somewhere but I'm too gosh dang hungry to remember. i think what I'm trying to say is that i want to try dating, it sounds fun (especially now that i've accepted that I Am A Guy. like woah.. you're telling me i can HAVE a gay relationship??? like in my fics????? no way) BUT. is scawwy. and finding someone who would be compatible with me, whatever that means exactly, sounds. hard.

B, F, K?

thought abt going thru all of my fics and felt an intense bout of decision fatigue so I’ve decided to limit things to mostly a3, which I think is probably the more interesting way to answer, anyways. I ramble so this is a bit lengthy.

B: Any of your stories inspired by personal experience?

oh yeah. I am Not Immune to Projecting Sometimes. I know I just said I’d talk abt a3 but this bakugou-centric fic was just me drawing heavily on my personal experiences with like. complicated family dynamics and it seemed to go okay so. I’m pleased with it mostly bc i felt like the conclusion wasn’t very… wish fulfillment? which is nice sometimes, but not what i wanted. 

on the a3 side, the Specifics are rather different but dress for success was definitely inspired by conversations i’ve had about gender and presentation before... but the detail drawn most from real life was probably juza’s thoughts about his smile, particularly that he’s just a guy that. Doesn’t Smile. As a kid i was 100% the sort of like. Person who has never smiled ever to my classmates and that made me later in life believe that i was just like. Incapable of smiling properly. I smile lots nowadays tho :) 

F: Share a snippet from one of your favourite dialogue scenes you've written and explain why you're proud of it.

[LUKE] It’s not. Besides, when I wake up, won’t you be there? On the other end of sleep, and “ Good night,” is a “Good morning”. You don’t need to follow me into everything, as long as you know you’ll see me again. [S] “Good night” is a very strange greeting, then. [LUKE] Maybe so. More than a greeting, I think it feels like a promise. 

clockwork heart is. my favorite play. it may even be my favorite event. (tough competition w/ captain’s sky pirates + my master’s mesmerized by mystery for me. and nocturnality.) 

this snippet is really just. it's kind of barely a fic. the whole post is not that long. I had Lots Of Thoughts about how luke, at the end of a clockwork heart, says, “So it’s just good night for now.” it was, to me, just such a perfect encapsulation of the idea that this separation was temporary and not forever, even though they were both saying goodbye, so I wanted to write something that expanded on that idea a little. i think it's effective, seeing as how I get more emotional about the ending, now, and the script format forced me to pretty much rely on dialogue alone.

K: What's the angstiest idea you've ever come up with? 

this made me look at myself and be like… huh, i think i’ve decreased in angst as i’ve grown older. interesting.

anyways i think mine would be…  there’s this backstage for nocturnality (so like, spoilers for that) where azuma is transported into the world of nocturnality and like. meets with kota after the ending of the play. and he makes this comment about like. oh, I prefer tasuku to kota, after all. 

and it just like. I’ve never stopped thinking abt that. so I had the sketches of an idea where it’s like. azuma is dropped into that world only like… he Stays There for wayyyy longer than a couple of hours. and u get very fun stuff of like. kota projects his feelings about reo onto azuma and azuma kind of does the same, and the like… lines blur a little badly and they probably lash out at each other somewhat. and it’s a bit complicated, since at this point in time azuma and tasuku have grown closer but they still don’t know each other Perfectly. and he’s not even here but there’s a guy with his face who is Almost Like Him (and how well can you be sure you knew tasuku, too…) all while you’re also slowly losing your sense of self because like, in this world, “reo” is the real existence?  there was also gonna be some kind of drama with the vampire society I think… since azuma would actually be like Human and not. Turned Yet. 

anyways it never rly went anywhere bc it would have to be a lengthy multichap and i’ve got a slow track record with those. i need to finish at least One. these are all also just like… vague concepts that i hadn’t fleshed out into proper plot beats, so it requires a Lot of Work that i just. don’t want to do currently. but i think it could be like. really fun.
