i finished up answering the overdue questions for Aqil (and one for Knave)

"You probably are aware that we are natural shapeshifters. It's not a spell we have to consciously learn, it's simply an ability that is in our blood and we develop it quite young, alongside things like walking or speech. But that also means it can go a little unreliable when young kitsune are experiencing heightened emotions. You sometimes shift between your forms unexpectedly and involuntarily. For most it relates to some kind of anxiety but not always. I'll give my sisters as an example: Qurin was strongly affected by anger, while Khadija would shift multiple times when she was very excited. It's embarrassing, sure, but it wasn't that big of a deal for us since we are quite open about our family being a kitsune clan. However it must be extremely stressful for those of our kin who prefer to keep a low profile. Do I have any especially awkward memories myself? I guess I do. I was addressing our congregation as the new Meru for the first time. It was probably too soon, I was still a little off from the ritual and getting used to my oracle curse, but I was stubborn and insisted that I could do it. I barely stumbled through my little speech, got all dizzy, shifted three or four times. It was a mess. Afterwards I felt like I made a complete fool out of myself and that it was all over. I'm not saying that everyone needs to find everything attractive but maybe some relationships would have a hard time surviving or they would devolve into something unhealthy over time. You read so many books and learn so many things. Do you keep any 'spicy' books on hand in your library? 'Just in case'? "Just in case? In case of what? I can't wait for the fateful day when my knowledge of "With sword and magic" plotline and 'techniques' will be the thing that saves the day. I jest of course, I don't think I keep any books of this type on hand at the moment. I did read a fair share of them when I was studying in Absalom, if you ever find yourself there you can seek out Madame Magnolia's Library for Light-hearted Libertines. That's where most of my reading material came from. Magnolia herself is a wonderful woman, always a delight to talk to and could endear anyone with how open and accepting she is. I once asked how her collection had started and she told me that she would say to her friends 'with every raunchy book I read I become more immune to bleaching' and to join in on the joke her friends would gift her all sorts of outlandish titles. At some point she had so many that it seemed like a waste to just keep them to herself so she started a little private library. After that her collection only grew when even strangers were willing to sell or give her more volumes to fill her shelves. Recently I got my hands on a little fictionalised retelling of the Knight Commander's 'exploits' during the Fifth Crusade and after reading it through I knew I had to send it to Madame. I wrote a little personalised dedication, tied a pretty bow on it. I hope she gets a kick out of that and may her colours be ever vibrant." invasiveness rating: i guess depends on who would be asking this but in peers type of situation he would be okay. and i really enjoyed making up Magnolia for this question △Aqil, is there anything you wouldn't do to prove yourself to your clan? is there anything more important? "Well of course, if you leave the question this open I can easily imagine scenarios where my decisions and their expectations don't mesh completely. We are all individuals of strong convictions so obviously we clash on details. But our love is not a result of a rigid structure and enforced hierarchy, it's a decision we've made and try to maintain through care and understanding. I don't have to prove myself to gain their respect and support because I already have it. I want to prove myself because I wish to strive for greatness just as our god teaches. I guess you could also mean this as 'if the ancestor spirits tasked you with something could you possibly refuse' and then the answer is no. I belong to Nethys and by extension I have to follow the guiding hand of Meru. But then again guidance does not have the severity of commands and I still have plenty of freedom to make my own choices." invasiveness rating: i thought it would get him, i really did. but then i considered it some more and realised he would be prepared to answer something like that because he did think about it himself △ aqil, what are/were your parents/guardians like? "They are wonderful. And I don't say that just to maintain my image of 'everything for family' kinda guy. When I was a little kid I believed that all parents are probably like mine because they are close to old parental archetypes. The father who, while not open with his feelings in words, shows his care through actions and structure he provides and the mother who spoils her children with affection and teaches them how to find joy in life. Of course when I got to experience more of the world I quickly realised that families can run the gamut from good to bad and in-between. And my own in its typicality is far from typical. But what more can I tell you about them… My father, Bashar Khay, is a very knowledgeable man, serious in demeanour, his very presence commands respect but his wit displays both cunning and sense of humour. He is a teacher of magic theory first and foremost even if he dabbled in other things. The two of us perceive spellcasting in different ways. Where I hear a melody and follow it to its logical conclusion, he sees rules and equations that need to be solved. But he never tried to convince me that my approach was wrong. We would simply compare and contrast and I think it made us both understand the arcane in new ways. Then my mother, Safiya Ineni, ever radiant and full of mirth. People sometimes would tell me that I take a lot after her and I consider that the highest compliment. This may surprise you but she is a bard. I mean she started her learning journey in the usual wizard fashion but when she discovered the joy of combining sounds and magic she knew this was the path for her. And to be fair she is not the usual flashy performer, she uses warm tones of her harp to calm and soothe. Her magic is not only beautiful but also helps those who are entangled in negative emotions and struggle with stress. While I don't have those talents myself, whenever I have a rough day, I play melodies she taught me and it does make me feel better. parallels made because of zz’s message alongside the xz studio photos released today, the weather is getting colder, pay attention to keep warm. i mean— are his hot af photos supposed to keep us warm? it sure did. lol. xzs knows what’s up!

ZZ, and by extension XZS have always been caring towards his fans. His messages were never sweet to the point of giving way to boyfriend fantasy, but more of a friend who genuinely looks out for you. We’ve talked about how he really doesn’t need to share much and yet he still does. The effort they put in their vlogs as well as photos is much appreciated by fans too. The speculation here is of course bojunyixiao bias, but that doesn’t mean i’m ignoring the truth that these messages are also for his fans.

Anyway, in today’s photo set he did remind people to keep warm. You would think he will say this because it’s getting colder where he is but No. You’ve probably seen some photos of him even wearing shorts while in Chongqing. Also CQ have always been a much warmer city compared to others. If you compare the type of weather, Beijing is in the single digit and is experiencing more of the cold weather. So who are you specifically reminding? Someone in Beijing?

and then you have WYB posting a douyin today. and yes we noticed he’s been active lately but in his video he is all bundled up. He is actually looking cozy in that hoodie. As if to say, “yes i am keeping warm gege.” I really love it when the 24-hour rule is in effect and it’s not on the same platforms.

..this year's spring is a bit cold, everyone pay attention to keep warm..

Around this time, WYB was MIA and shooting Born to Fly in Jiayuguan City ( Gansu ). He wasn’t allowed to leave and it was a locked in shooting because of the sensitivity of the movie’s topic and the involvement of military information. So they couldn’t really meet in person. Around this time in March, it’s so cold that it can get into negative numbers, so maybe another reminder to Yibo?

Yes, the campaign is all about dressing up for the cooler weather but XZS already addressed that in the first part of the caption ( talking about autumn ). but they just have to add that but about keeping warm. The date is 9/7 = 1997 ( Yibo’s birth year ) also 01:25, if you add the minutes all up then it’s 85 ( 8/5, Yibo’s birthday ). Turtles are saying that around this time, Bobo was filming Nameless and it was very cold. Remember they were doing night shoots up until the early morning so it seems like XZ specifically wanted this reminder to be added in.

This was later confirmed when one of the actors ( wang chuanjun ) did an interview and said it was very cold during the shooting.

...The sunset is solid and pleasant, and you need to enjoy the scenery (..) cold protection..

Another reminder ( allegedly ) for his beloved, who was still working with the Nameless crew. from the interviews we’ve seen, it was a tough shoot and it’s sweet of GG to add this in.

Lastly — I’ve been seeing some talk that shooting of ZZ’s drama is temporarily stopped because of COVID related protocol. At least he is stuck at his hometown for this rather than some place else. I also advise against spreading “candy” about them meeting in between and implying they are breaking inter city health protocols. that’s a big deal for them and artists will get flack if there’s any news that they broke the rules when it comes to this. it’s not always about candy and be careful of people who seem like they are well meaning because of the “sweets” they are peddling but it’s really rotten inside.

It may seem irritating to some because i always give this reminder but i will never stop. Turtles are very prone to being taken advantage of and we should be smarter in what we consume. 🤍

I do also already love that the many preconceived notions a lot of people had that Daemon never loved Rhaenyra and only used her to gain more power were basically all proved to be clownery in their very first scene together. It was always hilarious to me that people were so sure that their union was purely political, no emotion involved whatsoever, when "Fire & Blood" is extremely explicitly presented as a biased account of history -- yet still many people were like "They never cared about eachother, they only cared about gaining more power 🤡"

I'm happy to be vindicated, but also it seemed so obvious to me that there wasn't a snowball's chance in hell that they would ever go in that direction just from a narrative perspective. They adjusted Alicent's age and strengthened her and Rhaeynra's relationship because stories are much better when the characters are emotionally entangled with one another -- and similarly with Daemon and Rhaenyra, it would just be bland and boring to see them paired up if they are just apathetic towards eachother rather than very emotionally invested.

Anyways, sorry for the essay but I have no one to talk to about these things haha. Long story short, I am fired up for what is to come and look forward to cackling gleefully as events unfold 🔥🔥🔥

exactly like daemon can't just be doing insane cuntery balls to the walls scorched earth shit 24/7 there needs to be some emotional grounding element (got could get away with a character like joffrey or ramsay who were all cunt all the time not one redeeming feature anywhere in sight because they had a sprawling cast and they weren't the main characters but daemon is and hotd is much more focused so that wouldn't fly here) so his redeeming feature: his genuine real love for her 😚 that being said all of that was entirely unnecessary to type out because people who have eyes and saw matt smith acting know all of that already!

New-ish turtle here and just read about the actor Lan QiRen’s post. I think my motto in this fandom is to trust what I see, otherwise my brain is fried trying to debunk 🍬🍬 like these, because I am very skeptical.

GG must have been so touched by DD traveling all those hours by car just to be with him, that he had to design this for 520. I’m an artist myself and can totally understand GG’s need to express his emotions through art and for all the world to see. AND using BJYX references, which makes it even sweeter because only those in the know and their 4M+ turtles will get it. Ahhh. I love them so much!

Fake, fan fiction, major clownery and CPN.

Yeah, there are a lot of good reasons to believe it might have been created by GG, not least being the personal nature of the image. It's hard to imagine HZT creating something like that just randomly and posting it online. Maybe if he was a complete stranger and a turtle, but for someone from their direct entertainment circle to make a post involving a covid test, etc. seems... potentially too personal and socially very awkward.

It's more likely to me that he heard one of them musing that it's getting harder to make those kinds of posts lately, and offered to post it for them. Or something along those lines.

But the #1 thing that makes me think it was GG who created it and not some other person - any other person - was the fact that the mole part of the drawing was part green and part red, rather than completely red or completely green.

Most artists would have just gone with red because that's the color of the side of the drawing that the mole is on, or green to balance the drawing. But GG would not have wanted one of their colors to be separated out on its own, away from the rest of the heart. It's that kind of special personal touch that makes it seem like GG to me.

This is my CPN and I'm sticking to it. 😅 The second I saw that mole was half red and half green, I immediately thought, "GG drew this."

But of course it's possible HZT did it because, like us, he was touched by the story. We'll probably never know for sure.

Anyway, glad you're enjoying my blog! It's definitely a good time for turtles. We're being well fed these days!

I got a lot of (interesting, insightful and lovely, thank you so much peeps <3) responses, I really need to make this post and get my general opinion about fanservice off my chest :D

First of all two disclaimers:

1. I learned that the perception of fanservice is deeply personal and everyone sees it in a different light and I totally get that, so please bear in mind that my opinions about it are solely based on the industrial/corporate interest-side of things. Because that is what irks me the most about this.

2. I have known about this for only a few months now so I probably still lack some knowledge so take it with a grain of salt :)

I totally get all the points that were made under my original post, but the thing is: nobody can tell me that fanservice isn't intentionally misleading. That the blurred line between reality and imagination isn't exactly the goal.

And by that I mean from the companies side, not the actors. It's an intentional, promotional strategy to use the levels of how comfortable people are with each other and that doesn't sit right with me. I never saw this form of promotion from any other genre before.

If we all knew it was fake, it wouldn't be as successful as it is. And just because it's successful, it doesn't mean it's great.

IMHO it should not need personal boundaries, the understanding and learning by fans that it's "all just performance" because there is no clear communication made by the production companies. They want us to misunderstand, to invest time and emotions in all of this and I just hate that.

Or maybe I'm not knowledgeable enough about the industry but is there an official "fanservice guideline" where the companies talk about how the whole process works? Or is it just rumours about how it goes?

I think it's already hard enough to learn to draw the line between reality and fiction with every other form of media we consume and I find pushing the limits like that incredibly invasive. And by invasive I mean for the actors mainly. If fanservice and branded pairs weren't a thing, we wouldn't have so many issues about fans not knowing boundaries and nobody can convince me otherwise. I see much, much more responsibility from the companies side.

I don't know probably I'm just too in my head about this, but I absolutely hate people getting exploited and doing stuff they don't want to do, there's already enough issues with consent and harassment in media production and I just hope all the actors are happy that's it.

ANYWAYS! If you enjoy it, if you like it, whatever your view on fanservice is, that is totally fine and okay! I just hate rich people profiting off of passionate, hardworking people just to get richer <3

It’s A Curse If You Care Enough, CH 1 Snippet

The giant spider yokai breathes out a frustrated sound, twisting around to gaze at the four turtles at the end of her office. The squirming comes to a stop as the group realize she's gazing at them.

"Are you pleased with yourselves? All this hard work, ruined!" She waves a clawed hand angrily, gesturing at the broken glass container the Oozesquito's had been inside of. The fight in the office hadn't gone completely to plan. Leo could admit that. It almost makes him wish they had just left when he said they should.

Not like his brothers really listen to him anyway.

At the lack of response from the teenagers, Big Mama sighs, covering her face with one of her larger hands. "What else should I have expected from Rodeo Clowns?" She snaps her fingers pointing at the group. "Gather them. I want to make this night somewhat tolerable."

“How about, we make a deal?” Leonardo interjects quickly, just barely able to keep the frantic edge out of his voice. He needed to sell this. He needed to make this work. He didn't really know much about Big Mama, but she seemed the type to love a deal. She wanted to be in charge in control of a situation, but she seemed like she liked games.

Leonardo can feel his brothers glowing at him, gazes locked on his shell. He ignores it as he squirms forward in the web cocoon he’s in. “You like deals, right-?” He continues, managing a smile and wink at the yokai. He needs to make this work, so he has to ignore them.

The Spider Yokai pauses, observing the teenager with amused interest. Some of her irritation evaporated for the moment. There is no telling when that would come back. “I enjoy a good gimbly gamble every blue moon, turtly boo.” She taps the fingers of her smaller hand together, using the larger set to stall her workers from scooping the group up just yet.

“Well, take a gimbly gamble with me!” He says brightly back, wiggling closer. “I love a good challenge, Big Mama. Don’t you?”

“I do enjoy such on silly-willy occasion myself.” She agrees, her amusement still clear. She was intrigued, he could use this. “What are you thinking-?”

“Leo-“ Raph starts to warn, a frantic edge coloring his voice. He’s trying to scoot over, and likely lay on Leo to keep him from trying this.

“Nardo, do not do this.”

“Bro, please!”

“I’m thinking that you want those Oozesquitos, right?” Leo presses on, ignoring his brothers. He feels guilty for doing so, but the guilt doesn’t last. They didn’t believe him earlier. It's technically their fault all of them are in this mess right now. He’s going to get them out of this mess somehow. He’s the faceman, this is technically part of what he does. He talks big, so the rest of his family can do the heavy lifting. “I can do that for you. I have my portals, I’m fast, nimble, and quick. I’ll do it all, no complaints, no fuss, no running away if you let my brothers go.”

“And why shouldn’t I keep all of you and just make you my rodeo clowns?” She questioned, narrowing all of her eyes at him.

“Because, you know it’s a waste.” He manages to push himself into a seated position. Not the easiest thing to do given he’s cocooned in webbing. “The bottle broke, you lost all the work we did for you. And do you really trust your guys who are busy with so many other tasks to get that done?” He gestures best he can at one of her goons, a fox yokai glowering at him.

Leo drops his voice conspiratorially. “I mean, this guy, I’m pretty sure he’s so busy he hasn’t seen a brush in weeks!”

The fox yokai growls openly at the insult, only silenced as Big Mama holds a hand up again. “You certainly made some intriguing points little blue.” She hums back, “So, you would gather up Oozesquitos for Big Mama’s Battle Nexus?”

“I would. Only, if you let my brothers go. No recapturing later for clownery or any fighting. They’re off limits.” Leo wanted to be sure she didn’t try for a clear easy double cross. He wanted her to work for it if anything.

“Ohoho, trickery-wickery! You already know Big Mama.” The Spider Yokai laughs, brightening somewhat. She was clearly having more fun with this than Leonardo thought possible.

“Do we have a deal?”

“On additional thing.” The Yokai interjects, raising a finger and pointing it at Leo. “You give me your name.”

Summary;

With the Oozesquito's escaping through the smashed windows of Big Mama's office, Leo knows what he needs to do.

He's the face man, he can make a deal and get them out of trouble. Sure, his brothers didn't believe him about the Big Mama thing earlier, but he can handle this. He'll have more things to rub in their faces after this. They will so owe him for this.

Little does Leo know, Big Mama never plays fair.

She's happy to agree to his deal, only for the addition of his name.

The price is much steeper than he or his family would come to realize until it is far too late.

LT Apartment AU

I'm just copy and pasting what I came up with on a whim in discord

Neighbor AU (apartments) ��thro lives on the third floor, Glanni on the second floor below Íthro, Robbie on the first floor and Sport on the highest floor like six or something Ithro jumping around doing his exercises and Glanni gets annoyed by all the stomping sounds, he often blasts music, one time he threw like potatoes at the ceiling bc he couldn't find a broom, (idek why he has potatoes maybe he was going throw them at ducks or something when taking a break from bulling the kids at the park maybe) as he's doing that he prolly hurts his back or arm or hip whatever cause he's in bad shape and walks like an old man so his fault. A few potatoes definitely hit him on the way down

Anyways Robbie does maintenance stuff for the people in the building, the owners Milford and Bessie live on the first floor a door away from Robbie, so Robbie bumps into them all the time even when he's being sneaky, Bessie somehow always finds him and starts chatting about random gossip or sum, they often exchange dessert recipes

Íthro thinks Glanni's grumpy mood is amusing he finds him funny and finds himself hoping he'll bump into him when he leaves for the gym in the mornings. But Glanni is not a morning person at all, he is a mess, comes out the door in pink bunny slippers and black thin silky robe that's way too short (he sleeps in the nude probs)

Sport and Íthro go to the gym every single morning, on days Íthro is not awake/ready before him (which has been happening a lot more recently🤨wonder is Glanni has anything to do with that) he waits at the bottom of the stairs on the first floor. Robbie coming out his door tired and dead inside holding a big Garfield coffee mug (BC EVERYONE NEEDS A GARF MUG I SWEAR) and gets his breakfast delivery (he orders from some pastry place nearby, gets little cakes and stuff delivered to him most mornings) and Sport sees him tries to make conversation, Stephanie sometimes pops out on her way to school, happy that they're getting along and skips out the building with the other kids not far behind her. Also thanks to @coda-clownery for the idea of making Afrám Íthro the cryptid of the building

Here's a layout of each person's apartment, but I just realized that Sport should be ten, and I might move things around with the numbers, like the numbers aren't in order or something just so I can have Sport as 10 and also staying in the same spot maybe

Also where Afrám Ithro is i feel like it'd be a sus ominous like empty/abandoned apartment that the kids are scared of

There's also another building next to it that's a bit smaller and worse, I just wanted Maggibæt to happen and include the mayhem town gang, i figured that the Mr kicker dude whatever could own the second building ig

I think it's a lil silly whack that the mayhem town gang and officer loli would live in the same building

Also Im prolly gonna stick with Ithro and Sport are brothers and Glanni and Robbie are cousins

As modern AU jobs.. I'm not sure

I feel like Ithro could be some sort of personal trainer or something. Robbie probably invents stuff and gets good amount of money but also lives off of like inheritance money, I don't even know what to say about Glanni, Idk a stripper lmao, Sport.. I'm not sure still thinking

Omg I’m sorry, I thought this was probably a hard move. All the farewell posts and stuff were so emotional too but Kasper also seems very eager for his new club and excited for the new country but he really should invest in some sun protection the sun burn he had looked painful. 😳 I hope hes fine to play the next matches.

I think its so cute how so many of the danish players are at their clubs in pairs or more! Brentford lost Chris but immediately got a new danish player Mikkel Damsgaard, a winger with a cute face. 😊 And Jens Larsen, Stryger ( I get so confused with there names!) went to the turkish club of Andreas Cornelius and now they are total danish boyfriends there. 😍 Simon doesnt have any danish peers at Milan but I think he’s fine anyway, I saw him play in one of the test matches and he almost scored! He looks soo handsome since he shaved the viking beard off and now only has the stubble and the long blond hair I’m in love. 😍

I dont understand this stupid transfer period tho, it doesnt end until a few weeks into the new season and I wish theyd close the market sooner, theres still too much moving around for my taste not to mention all the stupid rumors. 😕 Apparently some English club whos clearly on drugs wants to buy Sandro, I think it was Arsenal, This is absolutely ridiculous and not happening ofcourse but just in case some shit like this ever went down I’ll be prepared, valid passport ready, police grade handcuffs and the biggest iron chain that Arsenal or any other club has ever seen, to capture Sandro and chain ourselves to their Milanello training facility. It was all the fans and social that had me SOBBING!! Leicester's account nearly ended me, I was sobbing for nearly an hour it was a mess. I get really emotional really easily I need to add 😂 He does!! He's so burnt bless him, my poor baby was so red 😭

This whole transfer season has not been a sea of clownery it's also been stressful to the max. The twists and turns, the whole mess happening everywhere... I'm praying for September just so all of this can be over. I keep wondering what the clubs will look like by then 😶

Okay, since the finale is tomorrow let me put my clown makeup one last time.

Marvel just released the finale's poster! And it's Marc's hospital restraints

So, apparently we are getting more hospital time! Which is great, I have loved every single scene so far! Yay! But you know what would make the finale better and could be linked to these restraints?

Now comes the clownery.

So, in a previous post I mentioned how convenient it is that both Steven and Marc have left Jake in the coffin, instead of taking him with them. You know, when Marc left for the fields of reeds, Steven ended up a statue and therefore neither of them can actually go through Osiris' Gates and back to their body and life. Such a shame they left Jake in the sarcophagus, the sarcophagus in the boat, the sarcophagus in the boat that is next to the gates, right?? Now, I wonder why the writers may have decided to do that, I for one cannot think of one single reason, it's a mystery.

ANYWAY.

So, Jake in the boat, the boat that as far as we know all three alters see as a mental hospital. Jake, the alter that has been shown to be the one that tries to protect Marc and Steven by taking upon himself the need to use some real violence when they are in danger, the alter that, if he was indeed the one with the broken nose in the previous episode tends to get really menacing when he feels disturbed.

Now I wonder, Marc didn't seem violent at all in the hospital, so then, why the ankle restraint? Yeah, he might try to wander off, as we saw in the episode, but what if the reason why they keep the restrains on him in the first place is because of Jake?

So, after seeing the poster for tomorrow, I hope that my theory is correct and Jake is HEAVILY featured trying to revive and save the day.

Now, see me crying in my clown makeup when Marvel ends up leaving him as just a cameo or after-credits scene.

Welcome to your life, there's no turning back: this one is a canon divergent AU where Mori tells Chuuya about his plans for the Mimic incident before it happens, including everything about Oda and how he knows its going to affect Dazai. Why? Because I wanted to put Chuuya through a crisis for some reason—and also explore how it would change canon.

Thief/Detective AU: Dazai is a detective, Chuuya is a thief, and this one is getting very ridiculous because Dazai becomes enamored real fast. I have a lot of it plotted out, but I mostly just have the beginning written for now :0

"Welcome to your life, there's no turning back" excerpt:

The words reaching his ears were muffled and distant, like he was submerged in deep, deep water. “Why are you telling me this, boss?” Chuuya asked, and his own voice sounded equally distant. Emotionless.

“It seems only fair,” Mori’s voice said, with a note of amusement that cut through Chuuya’s mental fog like a knife. Amusement. “After all, Dazai-kun is your partner. I thought I should inform you that he may soon be a traitor.”

Somewhere, beneath all of his swirling thoughts and rising fury, Chuuya found he felt betrayed. Because Mori knew that this wasn’t his strong suit, knew that Chuuya had always struggled to make the merciless but necessary decisions to run an organization like the Port Mafia. That was why he followed Mori without question. He didn’t need to know these things, to know the darkest sacrifices that their progress was built upon.

And he didn’t understand why, after all these years of leading him, Mori would choose to impress this knowledge on him now. That Mori had done it just to warn him was unthinkable; the boss rarely, if ever, informed anyone of his plans.

Chuuya had his own strengths, but he wasn’t built for the mind games that the likes of Dazai and Mori took part in.

Which meant that his best bet was not to play at all.

“I don’t like it,” Chuuya said, bluntly, truthfully. “There must be a way to get the special ability permit without sacrificing our own men.”

Mori, bizarrely, relaxed at this, and his smile eased a little on his face as he continued to watch Chuuya. “I do find your straightforward approach refreshing on occasion, Chuuya-kun,” he said, and if Chuuya didn’t know any better, he could almost imagine Mori sounded friendly. “Yes, there are many methods that would not involve Dazai-kun or Oda Sakunosuke. However, I believe in making the most of given opportunities, and Dazai’s loyalty has been wavering. If he becomes more loyal to this friend of his than to the organization, he is of no use to me. So this is not just an opportunity to earn the special ability permit, you see. I plan to use it as a test, to determine where Dazai’s loyalties lie.”

Chuuya kept very still as this sunk in. So that’s what Mori’s play was. It wasn’t just a test for Dazai; he was using the situation to test Chuuya’s loyalty as well.

“I understand,” he said, and his voice came out steadier than he expected. “Do you wish me to take part in this affair?”

Mori blinked. It seemed that somehow, Chuuya had surprised him. Whichever part of his response had caught him off guard, Chuuya was too on edge to care.

“No,” Mori said at last, eyes narrowing. “All you have to do is wait. I trust you understand that Dazai cannot know anything about this conversation.”

Of course, Chuuya thought bitterly. That was the test. To know, and just let it happen. “Of course,” he said dispassionately, bowing with his hat still clutched to his chest. Clinging to the symbol of his loyalty to the Port Mafia like a lifeline. “When shall it begin?”

“Oh, about one month,” Mori said, glancing out of the vast window overlooking the city. “It all depends on when our friends from overseas arrive to set the plan in motion.”

That was vague. Fair enough. Logically, Chuuya didn’t need to know the details if he wasn’t directly involved in the plot.

You are involved now, his own voice whispered in his head, sharp and furious. Whatever happens, whether you act or not, the end result will be on your conscience.

“In the event that Dazai betrays us, I will be prepared,” Chuuya promised. Though, can you really call it a betrayal if we’re going to do this to him? “Was there anything else, boss?”

“No, that will be all,” Mori said, waving his hand in an elegant dismissal. “I hope you rest well on your day off, Chuuya-kun. You deserve it, after all your hard work.”

Bastard, Chuuya thought viciously. Mori knew perfectly well Chuuya wasn’t going to be relaxing, not with this hanging over his head like an ax waiting to fall.

Chuuya crushed down his instinct to lash out with some difficulty, and left the room with measured steps.

He was silent in the elevator ride down to the base floor, and he remained quiet and controlled on his ride home, letting the roar of his motorcycle beneath him fill the void swirling in his own mind. He couldn’t let himself think, not yet, so he kept a mental lid firmly clamped down on the wounded thing writhing in his chest.

It wasn’t until he was back in his apartment, door shut carefully behind him, that he let the lid loose.

All at once, the full weight of that conversation, the magnitude of what had been pushed onto his shoulders crashed down on him. The desperate numbness that had gripped him while facing Mori fled away, opening the floodgates to horrible, twisting emotions that threatened to engulf him.

“Fuck,” Chuuya snarled, and he slammed his fist into the wall of his entryway, wild and uncontrolled. It smashed straight through the drywall, and he stood there breathing heavily as the dust fell from the jagged hole around his glove.

"Thief/Detective AU" excerpt:

A file dropped onto Dazai’s face, startling him awake. He blinked, not bothering to move his arms from behind his head or take his feet off the desk, and let the case file slip down to his chest, the papers inside coming loose.

He must have been more tired from that last case than he thought, even boring as it was. It looked like he had slept through a good portion of the afternoon. The sinking sun shining in through his office window had turned golden, and the light transformed the small, rather dingy space into something glowing and beautiful.

Dazai squinted down at the name of the file on his chest. “The Sheep Thief?” he read off, and raised an eyebrow up at Kunikida, who was standing over him looking unimpressed.

“He always wears a mask fashioned like a ram’s head,” Kunikida said tersely. “You were complaining about being bored, weren’t you? So he’s your problem now. He’s managed to stump our regular operatives for months.”

Reluctantly, feeling the welcoming grasp of his nap slipping away with every moment, Dazai picked up the file and began to flip through it, leaning back in his chair until he was on the brink of tipping over. He heaved an exaggerated yawn at the contents. “Just thievery? Boring. He hasn’t even killed anyone?”

Kunikida’s nostrils flared, and he visibly reigned himself back from snapping. “Murder would not be preferable, you insufferable—look, just figure out how he’s committing these thefts, and work out a way to catch him. Ranpo is busy, or Fukuzawa would have assigned him to it instead. As much as I hate to admit it, you’re our next best detective when you’re actually doing your job.”

“Fine, fine, I’ll do it, never fear Kunikida-kun,” Dazai said, flapping his hand lazily as he continued to scan the documents. His eyes caught on one detail and narrowed. “My my, he’s been in Yokohama for five months? It’s taken an awful long time to prioritize this case, hasn’t it?”

“He isn’t seen as much of a threat, given that he’s never harmed anyone in his robberies,” Kunikida explained, relaxing a bit now that Dazai appeared to be focused on the case. “But he is becoming a nuisance, if nothing else. He keeps sending letters to his targets beforehand, and even with advance warning, no one has been able to stop him. He appears to be gifted—people say it looks like he can walk on air. He has also pinned people to the ground with an unseen force, and knocked holes in walls, among other unnatural feats. It’s been suggested he may be telekinetic.”

Dazai hummed. Whatever gift the thief had, it would be useless against him. Still, it added a layer of intrigue. “It looks like he’s been getting bolder with time,” he observed, tracking the details across the pages. “More and more expensive items?”

“Yes, he’s starting to inconvenience the rich and powerful of Yokohama,” Kunikida sighed, nose wrinkling in distaste. “So the Agency has been put under pressure to bring him in. As though justice can be bought.”

“I mean, in many ways it can, Kunikida-kun,” Dazai pointed out in his most irritating tone of false sympathy. “After all, you are prioritizing the case now, aren’t you?”

Kunikida turned away from the desk, stalking towards the door. “Even if that’s how it is,” he said, “it shouldn’t be. It goes against the ideals we should all strive for.”

“Yeah! Fight the system, Kunikida-kun!” Dazai called after him. “I’ll be cheering you on!”

Kunikida sent him a withering look and swept out of the room, slamming the door behind him.

is it just me who thinks that both versions of the darkling suck at manipulation? it's obvious that show Darkles was just not trying at all because he fell in love pretty much at first sight, but I don't think book Darkles was very good at it either? Alina never really becomes dependent on him at all, he very obviously did not set out to seduce her romantically (despite the retcon in R&R) and even seems to be avoiding her at points. Alina is never convinced at any point that he's into her beyond physically lol. I definitely do not believe book Darkles when he tried to say he wouldn't have collared her if she hadn't run away though - she was going to end up in it eventually no matter what. I think he did a good job of feeding her insecurity around her summoning but beyond that...I mean he couldn't even get her to be loyal to HIM let alone all the Grisha. What are your thoughts?

I don't know what was in the script, but Ben plays the Darkling like a lovesick puppy with TERRIBLE game because he hasn't been on a date in like 300 years ☠️

Like, the whole "darkles manipulated alina" narrative in the show is a fucking joke to me because all I see is fucking idiot who is genuinely like *shocked pikachu face* when Alina hates him for putting that collar on her like "whaaat? She doesn't like that I killed a magical deer for her and used it's antlers to gift her this awesome necklace that gives her a massive power boost??? Why is she yelling at me like that??"

Like, dude. Buy her dinner first 😂

The only time I feel like he actually manipulates her is when he implies they're going to destroy the Fold but then he's like "pfffft why would be destroy it when it's the greatest weapon we have" and she's like "YOU LIED!!" and then Ben has this truly hammy moment where he does this dramatic ass villain turn while his face is obscured by darkness but even then it's like "Yeah, she hates me now but she'll forgive me in t-minus 15 years and then the wedding is back on" 🤡

The story tries so hard to be like "he's pURe EviL!!1" and it's literally just darkles looking at Alina with literal TEARS in his eyes or even bothering to show so much genuine emotion when he doesn't even have to because Alina isn't even in the damn scene to witness it 😂

Like that time he was acting like a heartbroken 15 year old when he gets roasted by Kaz or stands on the other side of the door after Alina left and all you can do is point and laugh at this immortal dumbass like

So maybe there was *an attempt* by Show!Darkling to manipulate Alina at the start but that pretty much went out the window when she first started yelling at him and he immediately decided to plan their immortal married life together like a hopeless dork:

In conclusion: show!Darkling is a hopeless simp whose entire eViL pLaN got derailed because he caught feelings for an angry sunbeam 😌

As for book!Darkling, he at least didn't get his plan derailed until much later and unlike his show counterpart, actively HATED his crush on Alina? Like it was a massive fucking inconvenience to him and he'd be so embarrassed to see the absolute simping clownery that show!Darkling got into that he'd probably fake his death again.

But the other thing about the book is that book!Alina herself is so desperate for approval and a place to belong that she makes it very easy to manipulate and play on her emotions.

The reason book!Darkling comes across as more morally grey is because a lot of his actions always end up serving like two different purposes (one of them working in Alina's favour, and the other self-serving):

He deliberately keeps Mal's letters away from her to try and cut her connections to the past, but this actually ends up being a good thing because even Alina later admits that had he not sabotaged her communications with Mal, there's no way she would have learned to summon her power on her own (In the show, it comes across more like Darkles is low-key jealous that Alina has a strapping boyfriend and he probably cries himself to sleep reading their letters lmao)

He initially stands up to Alina getting railed on by Baghra when her summoning is weak because he doesn't really need her to be a good summoner if he can just strap a collar on her BUT this ends up helping Alina feel better about herself because he's like the only person who ever advocates for her or gently encourages her

He lies to her about destroying the Fold but his plan actually makes a lot more sense, especially looking at the complete clusterfuck Ravka became after the Fold got destroyed lmao 😂

You could argue his first kiss is pure calculation because he wanted Alina to be loyal to him with something other than duty or fear, but his second kiss at the Winter Fete was literally just him losing his cool and he even admits he doesn't want to give in to his "weak" puny mortal emotions, but this implies there is still some humanity left in him

Had Baghra not shown up to warn Alina, it's likely Alina would have worn the stag collar with 100% consent because she was looking forward to it, but she likely would not have consented to him using her powers to expand the Fold so when he says "that was never my intention" with regards to collaring Alina, I think he really means that it was never his intention to collar her without her consent but he decided he was gonna do it anyway once she ran off....however, I think he's being deliberately vague by leaving off the part where he planned on using her power to destroy a village lmao

So while I think book!Darkling definitely manipulates her because he's a man for whom the ends always justify the means, it still leaves me feeling kinda "meh" about the whole thing because had Alina been a more morally grey character herself, they could have literally just taken over the world???? the wasted potential 😭

Day 2: AU get me out of here - places to go when canon is complicated

It’s Day 2 for @roswellnewmexicocreate, time to celebrate those stories that I turn to when I can’t deal with canon, or when I don’t have the emotional energy to untangle all the emotions I have for what’s going on in canon. Alternative universes, the safe harbor for us. Below are a mix of rewrites of canon, remixes of canon, or out right not even set in Roswell- to fill every type distance you want from canon- from near to far.

and the howl of the desert carries me home by @christchex/ @michaels-blackhat (4,334) Alex runs into the desert to escape from his father with his guitar clutched to his chest. He plans to spend one last night playing before his father destroys it. Instead, he meets a cute boy with flowers in his curly hair and a lizard on his shoulder. He exchanges a song for a smile.

why i like it: I love everything about this story. Michael is totally a disney princess, and what a lovely way to save him from foster homes, but have him run away to the desert and use his alien powers to build his own little protective world. Looping in Nora’s plant powers like that, giving Michael a little animal friend, I love it all, but the show stealer is Alex Manes, playing music to coax the mystery boy out. It’s just incredibly soft.

Heartbeat series by @adiwriting (133,000 - in progress) During the lost decade, Alex gets Michael pregnant and Michael doesn't see or hear from him again for the next four and a half years. When Alex comes back to town, he discovers he has a daughter with Michael and they all have to figure out how to be a family.

why i like it: it has it all, installments with angst, installments with fluff, I can find whatever mood I am in by just pouring over this incredible series. I really don’t even like mpreg, but in RNM, with aliens it seems a little more probable to me and bless Britt, she goes light on the details but heavy on the kid aspect of it. I absolutely love Alex in this story, he’s richly characterized as a man who is trying hard while wandering unfamiliar territory like aliens, like being a dad, like being Michael’s boyfriend, and he doesn’t always get it right, but he’s loved regardless.

tonight we are young @skinsharpenedteeth (8,137) Alex and Michael ditch the Evans' New Years Eve party to find their own fun and Alex gets his New Years kiss...(the underage tag is because they're both 17 in this.)

why i like it: I’m a sucker for teen!Malex, especially stories that take place before the shed. I love this little AU where Alex is thinking about making a move, but hasn’t yet. They are both adorable nervous babies, this feels very much how a softer teen!Malex first time would go. Perfectly characterized here, you can just feel the hopeful vibes they have at 17. I like to believe nothing bad ever happens to them again.

you shift on a gear (it’s been a long year) by @backinmybodymp3 (28, 362) “Good morning,” Michael says. “What the hell did you do?” Alex asks, exasperated. (or: There were times, in some of the lower moments of the past however-many-days it’s been, where Michael had thought about what it might’ve been like to share this time loop with someone. He never imagined— well, he never imagined it’d be Alex.)

why i like it: I love time-loop stories! And this is just superb. The friendship dynamics of everyone involved, the Liz/Max wedding, Michael being a good brother, Michael trying so hard to keep this bullshit from dragging Alex in and then Alex being his usual reckless self when it comes to Michael, I absolutely dig this canon-divergent au. you can feel how much the author cares about everyone on the show in this story, and they really nail the Malex dynamic. This story came along just as season 3 did and it’s a true antidote to the malex drought on screen.

the library by @arielana (9,657) Alex had stopped too far away to hear exactly what they were saying, but their voices did carry over to where he was standing. The guy’s drawl had a melody to it that was vaguely familiar, but much deeper than the voice it reminded Alex of. God, that and the hair really brought some memories back. Just as Alex told himself to stop secretly staring like a creep and walk over there, he turned slightly so that Alex got a glimpse of the side of his face. Fuck! Fuck, fuck, fuck! Twelve years ago Alex left Roswell to join the Air Force, nursing a broken heart and promising to never return. When work brings him back to New Mexico he runs into someone he’d been sure he’d never see again.

why i like it: the first kiss in the UFO emporium was groundbreaking, but I have to admit, I love stories that explore the almost-happened, where Malex reconnect as adults without the shadow of Jesse’s attack. I love how sharp Alex is in this story, he has all these walls as an adult built from that first rejection, but then he’s so completely unprepared to reconnect with Michael again. The clownery in this story by both of them is perfect! I also totally love Forrest as a gay best friend for Alex, trying to wingman Alex, that cracked me up.

stellar light based life by @jocarthage (30,651) It’s not a memory if it’s something you see every day. It’s a trigger and it’s not one Alex wants to ever let go of.Alex saw Michael disappear into a blinding blue light, soft 17-year-old body pulled back into some kind of impossible vortex -- one hand, outstretched.

why i like it: another submission from 2020 RNM Big Bang, this story just wrecked me. I can’t even really put into words about how it hooked me and basically lives in my head now to the point I often mumble the first line to myself. Anyway, this AU takes a right turn at the shed attack, and goes full force scifi and tragic separation, I love it. In so many ways it reshapes Alex’s life but the core of who he is never changes, there’s so many great science geekery details about Michael’s planet and the astronaut journey that Alex takes, plus SANDERS... anyway, this is a fandom classic for me.

Crossed Wires by @beautifulcheat, @ladynox (15,351) Michael's been kicked off more than one Starfleet posting. So when he learned he was reassigned to the USS Roswell, he decided that he would keep his head down and behave. This decision is immediately thwarted when he meets her hot Vulcan captain.This might be the first time Michael got kicked off a posting for flirting with a captain.

why i like it: Star Trek AU? I’m pretty easy. Seeing elements of Kirk and Spock’s tragic backstory blended into genius mechanic Michael Guerin and ice prince Alex Manes was amazing. I love how it’s serving with his family that brings Michael to the Enterprise, his bond with Max and Isobel was chef’s kiss good. The blend of Michael’s powers and Alex’s biology - I loved the balance even if it came with its own misunderstandings, but hey, this time it was cultural! lol

I’m still here by @vague-shadows @pippsmcgee (35,928) Treasure Planet AU in which Michael is the gifted young delinquent who found a treasure map, and Alex is a space pirate pawn in his Father's obsession with riches and legacy.

why i like it: I’ve never seen Treasure Planet, but I didn’t need to thoroughly enjoy this AU. This was the perfect mix of angst and sci-fi adventure, where the authors managed to make the shed even more horrifying. Jesse Manes is the absolute worst in this story, the levels of obsession he goes to find a treasure, and then Michael on his own collision course - the ability to write tense action is a gift, and it’s on display in this story. Cyborg!Alex took up a place in my heart and still lives there, where he only gets the nicest things.
