mastermind; epilogue
15 months later
In the elevator, I adjust my blouse and smooth out my blazer. My hand shakes slightly and that’s probably because of how much coffee I’m pumped with.
There was a party last night at the boy’s house to celebrate our graduation, and them moving out of the house they did nothing but hold parties in. I told Harry I didn’t want to go, but he insisted that it was the last party and I couldn’t miss it. I felt nostalgic seeing all my friends, though I knew a lot of us were staying around and not moving too far away.
But I did end up drinking a little because it was the end of an era. Aside from the boys and Julia and Eleanor, I didn’t really care too much for most of the people at the party (because I didn’t know most). I was keeping my drinks to a minimum and so did Harry. It’s already hard enough for him to let people make a mess in his house, but it was especially harder last night because they’re putting the house up for sale and needed it in it’s best condition. We ended up leaving before the party ended to be alone and get food.
I grin remembering his warm smile and how soft his hands felt in mine. The dingy shawarma place with the fluorescent lights was no where near a romantic setting but the way Harry looks at me when we’re alone makes everything fade away.
He was excellent at keeping me calm and helping me sober up. After he took me back to my place to rest for the night (or the few hours left of it) he went back to his to clean up, leaving me to wake up alone and prepare for this interview.
Sorry, babe, just woke up. Good luck on your interview, I know you’ll kill it so don’t be nervous. Just do what we went over and he’ll love you.
Just as my eyes finish reading over his text, he sends the kissy winky face emoji. My heart swells and I send back a heart to let him know I got it. If it wasn’t for Harry, I’d be a nervous wreck right now so I’m very thankful I have him.
The elevator doors open and I walk up to the receptionist’s desk. She looks up and smiles at me.
“Hi, I’m here for an interview with Jordan Green?” I tell her. She nods and is just about to call him when Jordan himself walks out and sees me.
“Aria, so nice to see you again! Come in, follow me,” he smiles and leads me into his office.
Another thing I have Harry to thank for. A few months ago I had a huge meltdown about how I will go nowhere in life with my so called ‘useless’ degree. My few friends from my program had internships that looked promising and Zayn got requested to do illustrations for some local publishing company. I didn’t tell Harry about it until I started get anxiety attacks and he noticed. He tried to calm me down help me think of possible job options but my confidence in my skills began to deteriorate so in the next few weeks he told me about some of his father’s friends who were looking to hire. And then we had a huge fight because I didn’t want him to find me a job, I wanted me to find me a job. I hated it when Harry had to step in to help me out using his status because it made me feel like a charity case. Harry, of course, didn’t agree and continued to pester me about marketing, graphic design and concept art jobs that were mainly for his father’s company. At one point I think he started making jobs up in his father’s company so they’d appeal to me, but I refused all of them.
Until a few weeks after.
“How was your father?” I asked the morning after he had dinner with his father. I was also invited but I politely declined due to having a midterm exam the next day.
“Good… good…” Harry replied as we moved up a space in the Starbucks line. “He talked a bit about his business friends who are hiring.”
“Oh, here we go again,” I muttered, rolling my eyes. Harry bit back a smirk while I glared at him, not knowing what was so funny about the wrath he was about to face.
“No, of course I told him you weren’t looking for a job,” Harry said like the idea was so ridiculous. This made me frown because I was looking for a job… but I can’t get mad at him because I was the one who’s forcing him to stop helping me. Harry looked at me like he knew he made a point. I narrowed my eyes at him, not liking this.
“Good,” I said.
“So… if you happen to know any of your friends who want to work for Jordan—you remember Jordan, he was at my birthday last year, you talked to him quite a bit?”
My heart dropped.
“Yeah, I remember Jordan,” I said quietly. Oh no, what have I done? Jordan was so nice; I’d love to work for him!
“Yeah, well he’s just looking for, like, an art consultant or something…” Harry said offhandedly. Nooooo.
“An art consultant?”
“Yeah… I told my dad that you might know some people, ‘cause you’re in an art program. So let me know if you think of anyone, yeah?” he grinned. I followed Harry to the counter as he ordered our drinks, stunned. When we got them and left the shop I stopped.
“Hey!” I said. He looked back at me. “I-I might want to see about this job…”
Harry grinned like the little shit he is. “You what?”
I rolled my eyes. “I might want to work for Jordan. This job sounds cool… Is it too late to do anything about it now?” I asked, starting to feel myself stressing out.
“No! Not at all, in fact let me send Jordan an email right now,” I held Harry’s cup and we walked as he read out what he was typing in his email. “Hello Jordan, hope you’re doing well. Aria has confirmed that she’s available for that interview we were discussing. Here is her email—”
“Hey! You already set up an interview?” I exclaimed.
“Yes,” Harry laughed. “Don’t worry, it’s after grad so you’ll be free. You have like two months to prepare for it.”
I shook my head at him and rolled my eyes but I couldn’t stop the grin spreading on my face. Harry was amazing.
---
My interview ran way longer than I expected. As I exit the building, I see Harry leaning against his car on the edge of the road with his sunglasses on and arms crossed, just looking around. I’m pretty sure he wasn’t allowed to park there.
I grin and run up to him, feeling loose with the relief coursing through me. Harry sees me and stands straight holding his arms out. I run into him and wrap my arms around his neck tightly.
“Hey—”
“I got the job! I got the job! I got the job!” I scream in his ear. He laughs and spins me around before pulling back to look at my face.
“Knew you’d get it, babe,” he says, pressing a kiss to my lips. He pulls back and rests his forehead against mine as we both smile at each other. I press another kiss to his lips.
“Thank you thank you thank you,” I chant, pressing more and more kisses all over his face.
“Hey, now, I didn’t do the interview for you,” he chuckles.
“No, but you got me the interview. I got the interview because of you,” I argue. Harry cups my cheeks in his hands.
“No, actually. That was also you. Jordan emailed my father to get in touch with me so he could ask about you. He wanted you to work for him. I guess that time you met him really left a good impression.”
I look at him in shock. Jordan had sought me out specifically?
“Still,” I say, shaking my head. “You’re the angel who made it happen. If it wasn’t for you and your father I wouldn’t have gotten this job, so shut up and let me kiss you,” I demand.
“Well you can always do that—” I break off his sentence by pulling him in for a deep kiss and pouring out all the love I have for him. We completely shut the world around us out as we get lost in each other. Until someone slams a hand on Harry’s car.
“Hey!” A man in a uniform calls out to us rudely. “You can’t park here.”
“Oh sorry, we’re leaving right now,” Harry apologizes.
---
Everyone is happy for me because I was sort of the last one to get a job. Julia already had something her father set up for her, as did Harry. Zayn got the illustrating job and Louis and Niall were going to grad school, so they had some more time.
Julia called the boys to come over to ours for a small celebration. It wasn’t a party, just friends hanging out while we can before we go our separate ways.
Our university was one of the best so Niall and Louis were lucky to get into our grad programs. They will both be moving into an apartment together. Julia and Harry will be working downtown because that’s where their father’s companies are. So far, Zayn is staying where he is but he might move if he gets a higher position (not for a while thought).
“Hey, mate, why don’t you move in with Niall and I?” Louis shouts to Zayn.
“Oh, no, won’t you guys be too far?” Zayn asks.
“Isn’t the publishing company downtown?”
“Like twenty minutes away…”
“Well that’s where we’re looking for a place too! We can’t find any good two bedrooms, but there was one offer for three bedrooms and it’s close to downtown!”
“Yeah, come on Zayn! It’s the closest and nicest place we’ve found to our uni. Move in with us so we can get the bigger apartment,” Niall coaxes.
It doesn’t take much to convince Zayn. I watch the exchange with a small grin. I’m really happy all of us are staying so close together.
“Brilliant. We can play video games easier now. And we won’t have Niall to distract us as much seeing as he’ll probably be here all the time,” Louis jokes.
Oh, another big thing. Julia and Liam didn’t really last. They dated for a good eight months before breaking it off. While Liam was a really good match for Julia (handsome, wealthy, intelligent) and he practically kissed the ground she walked on—he wasn’t the one for her. After Julia and Harry broke up, she had a completely different approach to how she did everything. She was visibly trying harder to be herself and to be honest and genuine. I think she felt like her relationship with Liam wasn’t genuine but more superficial. And seeing Harry and I together added to that so she broke up with Liam. They still talk sometimes, and for a few weeks after he tried to win her back but Julia was insistent that he will find someone who loves him more than she did.
The Julia that I knew my whole life had her nose in the air and walked like she was a goddess only good enough for men she deemed worthy (men who had a high status, were good-looking and had a promising future). The Julia that came out of her relationship with Liam was not that. Suddenly, she didn’t care about being all prim and proper, and what someone’s social status was. She initiated the flirting with guys at bars, though she still held some standard and didn’t let it go further than a one-night stand.
This new Julia was more vivacious and fun to be around, which made it easier for the others to finally get along with her. And that’s how Harry, Louis, Zayn and I walked in on them having sex in the living room of the boys’ house while the rest of us were out.
Harry and I were both extremely shocked—me because I used to joke that I would judge Julia if she went for someone like Niall, and Harry because he couldn’t believe his ex-girlfriend and best friend would be sleeping together.
When Niall and Julia met us in the kitchen, clothed and red-faced, Harry lunged at Niall and nearly beat him but we held him back.
“What the hell were you thinking?!” he shouted at Niall when he embarrassedly admitted that him and Julia were basically friends with benefits.
Harry and Julia maintained a civil relationship after their breakup. It was a little awkward sometimes with the three of us in the house, especially in the mornings when Harry would emerge from my room shirtless, instead of hers like he used to. But they were both mature adults, and this new Julia was happier and better at letting things go so she actively tried to avoid making things awkward. But right now it seemed like Harry wasn’t as mature as we thought.
“Look, mate, I’m sorry!” Niall apologized, trying to block Harry’s punches. I pushed Harry back and placed myself directly in front of him so he would stop.
“Aria—move!”
“No, Harry, stop this!”
“How long has this been going on?” Harry growled.
“Like… two months now…?” Julia answered. Harry pinned his glared on Niall again.
“How dare you—”
“What?!” Julia yelled back, defending herself and Niall.
“He’s my best friend, how could he be sleeping with my ex without even asking me how I feel about it!”
“You are not being serious right now,” Julia deadpanned. Her icy glare startled him into silence. “Harry—how can you not see how hypocritical you’re being! Aria is my best friend and you’re my ex! I don’t even hold a grudge against you guys for being together!”
“But you pushed for us to be together, that’s different! I didn’t even know about—”
“Because you don’t need to! You don’t need know or care about who I sleep with. We’re not dating anymore and you don’t get a say in what I do so I don’t know why you think I’m even obligated to tell you much less ask if you’re okay with it when you’re doing the same thing. And I pushed for you guys to be together because I knew it would make you happy, so why can’t you do the same for me? You two have each other, I have no one. Niall’s been the happiest thing in my life for the first time in a long time, and the fact that you haven’t even noticed that I’ve been happier shows how little you really care about me.”
I admired this new Julia for having a stronger backbone and standing up for what she thinks instead of cowering and apologizing profusely. We all stared at Julia in awe.
“Wait so, are you guys like actually really together?” Louis questioned stunned.
“Well I mean, not like t-together together,” Niall said unsurely. He shyly glances over at Julia who is smiling at him. My heart melts.
“You guys this is so fucking cute,” I said nearly tearing up. “Go get out of here and figure out if you’re together or not because she said you make her the happiest,” I added, pushing them out and forcing them to go be alone and talk away from everyone. They chuckled awkwardly and left while I returned to yell at Harry.
They’re still kind of shy being together around us. Niall throws a pillow at Louis’ head for his comment and we all laugh. Harry apologized to them both privately for lashing out so there was no animosity or hostility between anyone in our group.
I lie back against Harry’s arm that’s wrapped around my shoulder. I watch his face light up as he laughs along to what Louis is saying. He turns to look at me and sees me already looking at him. I smile shyly, since I was caught, and he pulls me in closer to his side. My head is buried in his chest and my arm wraps around his waist as I bask in the warmness spreading through me because of him. Harry kisses the top of my head.
“Y’alright?” he asks.
“Yeah,” I sigh.
“What’s on your mind, love?” he whispers in my hair.
“Just how happy I am,” I look up at him again. “Mainly because of you.”
“I’m happy you’re happy,” he chuckles, stroking my cheek with his other hand.
We don’t say it a lot. I’ve never had anyone to say it to like this, and he didn’t say it all the time to Julia either. But right now there are no truer words to be said.
“I love you,” I murmur.
His eyes light up like they always do when I say that, and my heart skips a beat every time he says it.
“I love you, too,” he replies with shining eyes.
***
Okay now THAT is the official end. :(
I’m sorry if for some of you it feels like it ended too soon, but for me the end was always going to be when Harry and Aria get together. And trust me when I say I dragged the shitttt out of this fic. At some point around chapter 7 is when their feelings should have naturally gotten stronger (in my opinion) but I really wanted to keep writing more so I tried to stretch it out and I could see everyone saying “Harry HAS to know he loves Aria now!” which is true haha!! He did! He just wasn’t ready to accept it, I guess? And I thought about getting Zayn and Aria to date but both are too mature to do something petty like that to get Harry’s attention. Ugh I wrote these characters too mature, next time they’ll be dumber so we can have more drama.
But there we go everyone gets a happy ending :)
Not sure if anyone is interested, but I do have another fic I’m working on. It’s still a long way from even having the first chapter posted but if you want, look out for that! It’s going to be dark Harry actually, I’m quite surprised my first completed fic was a fluffy uni au. I’ve always been very into darker and supernatural themes and I love Harry when he’s not nice lol.
Thank you again to everyone who read this fic and shared their thoughts with me! You guys have made this so fun and fulfilling. On days I felt the lowest, I’d come on Tumblr or Wattpad and see notifications on this fic and it would make me so happy, please never stop commenting and letting authors know what you think! It really helps more than you think! Love you all <3

five times jon came out (and one time he didn’t have to)
spoilers up to the end of season 4, and cw for minor transphobia/cisnormativity
i. his grandmother
He was nine the first time.
His grandmother had asked him to wash the dishes, and as he did, he ran over the words in his head as he kicked one foot against the stepstool he had to use to reach the sink.
“Stop doing that,” she said sharply, her voice carrying across the kitchen from where she sat, reading the newspaper.
“Sorry,” he said, setting the dishes aside. She clicked her tongue at him, shaking her head.
After a moment, he approached her at the table. “Can I talk to you about something?” he asked quietly, making sure he wasn’t fidgeting or anything like that. It would only make his argument weaker if he was nervous. She wouldn’t listen to him if he was nervous.
“Well? What is it?”
“I don’t… feel like a girl,” he said, his voice shaky even if his body wasn’t. “I haven’t for a while. And… I want to start dressing and acting like a boy now. And pick another name.”
She looked up with her eyebrows raised higher than he’d ever seen them. “Absolutely not,” she said, adjusting the newspaper in her hands and looking away from him. “There is absolutely no way I am letting you destroy our reputation like that.”
“But—” He’d expected this, had sources, had a plan.
“No buts. Continue with your chores and then start your homework. Now.”
He left the point for nearly four years, just tried his best to get on with his life and be a normal person. And then he hit puberty, and then everything felt wrong.
From then on, he would insist at least once a month that he still wasn’t a girl, still felt wrong, still wanted to pick another name. And every single time, his grandmother would shut him down, tell him that he was going to ruin their reputation, force him back into the closet.
It was almost convincing. He gave up on it, thought it was just a phase every girl went through—until uni, until Oxford when he was free and could shave his head and dress how he liked and be who he liked…
ii. georgie
…and still he felt wrong. It became clearer and clearer that this wasn’t going to go away.
He started joining online support groups. There were some that confused him, some that helped, some that were just useless to him.
His college roommate talked to him about her friend groups—and the pair of boyfriends in it. He joined the gay-straight alliance with her and told everyone to use ‘they’ pronouns for him, and it felt… good. Really, really good. Not perfect, of course, because there was still that tiny sense of wrongness tweaking at the back of his mind, but good enough that he felt really, truly safe.
Georgie, one of the girls in the GSA, started to talk to him. Then started to hang out with him. Then they started to date, and by the end of their junior year they’d made plans to move in together. And then the sense of wrongness got stronger and stronger. He spent night after night worrying about it, barely eating or sleeping, just thinking and thinking. He spiraled—deep into his own thoughts, constantly on the edge of a panic attack or a breakdown.
He came out to Georgie only a few days later. She accepted him—of course she did, she was incredible about it. They went online and found a trading group, one that gave away binders from people who had finished their top surgery.
And then they fought, and then they broke up, and Jon was alone.
So he moved on. He got a job while closeted, and then was outed at work, and got fired. And then…
iii. elias
…he did something he wasn’t proud of.
He forged his documents. A birth certificate, resume, degree, everything he needed. He went back to the Magnus Institute, where he’d done an internship a few years before.
The interview had been a breeze. Apparently they’d been looking to fill a researcher position, and while he hadn’t studied anything even close to research science, his English degree was close enough. He wasn’t sure that was how it worked, but he wasn’t going to turn down a job he had basically gotten with no qualifications at all. Especially one that he was allowed to present male at.
There were the usual bumps, of course—he didn’t get along with everyone there, but he wasn’t expecting himself to, and for the most part, people were actually kind of nice.
He was transferred to the archives a few years later. He didn’t know the first thing about library science, much less have a degree in it, but apparently he was somehow qualified enough to become the head archivist. It had struck him as odd at the time, of course, but he didn’t question it. The job was well paying, and if he made anyone aware of the fact that he really wasn’t qualified to be doing this, he might lose it.
So he didn’t. He just kept doing his work, recording statements, getting poorly made bagged tea from Martin, staying later and later until he barely went home. It was absolutely perfect—until his new boss, Elias, did some digging.
He didn’t know what to do until Elias said that he wasn’t going to be fired. Of course, he was completely confused by that—why wouldn’t he be fired?
When he told Elias so, he just replied with a sigh and a shake of the head.
“You’re a capable archivist,” he said. “If I fired you over just a tiny bit of forgery, what would I do without you? I’d have to hire another, and…” He waved a many-ringed hand vaguely. “Really, too much work for me.”
And with that, Jon was still working there. Still drinking the slightly disgusting coffee that Sasha would make, still working with Martin and still avoiding Elias as much as he could.
Things started to get weirder and weirder, and before he knew it…
iv. tim
…there were worms. There were these terrible, awful worms everywhere and he had to save the Institute and then they were on him and he was fairly certain that he blacked out for a while because the next thing he knew, Martin had a corkscrew to his arm and he was having worms pulled out of him.
He knew where they were. He’d felt them. And there were some that they’d have to go under his binder to get.
They’d better give me a raise enough that I can get top surgery soon was the only coherent thought running through his head. He was panicking—very slightly, but still panicking.
“I can do the rest myself,” he said, standing up quickly and practically tearing the corkscrew from Martin’s hand.
It only took a few moments for him to lock himself in the bathroom and strip off his shirt, then his binder. He bit his lip, then drove the corkscrew into his upper chest.
It burned like hell as he drew it out of himself, but the worm was gone in moments. Then the next, then the next. He made his way down his chest, to his stomach, then prepared to drive it into his leg and—
“Jon?”
He flinched, seeing Tim standing at the door with a shocked expression on his face. His eyes flicked from Jon’s face to his chest back up to his face.
“Those look pretty bad,” he said hollowly as he stared vaguely in Jon’s direction.
“Yeah,” he said quietly.
Tim stood there in silence for a moment.
“You’re not going to tell anyone,” Jon said, his voice shaking violently.
“No. I’m not.”
Jon pulled his shirt back around himself. He looked away from Tim, praying he wouldn’t try anything.
He heard a sound from beside him as Tim sat down, looking straight ahead rather than at Jon. It was a small relief, but a relief nonetheless, and he tried to struggle back into his binder to little avail.
“Hey, hey, don’t do that. You’re still bleeding, Jesus, Jon.” Tim put a hand on his shoulder to steady him. “Just… just sit here, I’m gonna get you some gauze and we’re gonna get you down to the medical team so we can get you fixed up.”
Jon shut his eyes tightly, and he leaned heavily on Tim as they both tried desperately to get him sitting up.
“Just take your shirt—you want your jacket, too?” he asked, helping Jon to his feet.
“Y—yeah.” He struggled into his shirt, Tim helping him with the buttons. After a moment, he leaned on Tim, clinging to the lapel of Tim’s jacket tightly. He hated feeling so helpless, but he could barely walk for all the holes in his legs.
“This changes nothing between us,” Tim said as he brought him to the ambulances outside.
“Of course.”
v. basira
Everything was normal for a while. He could pretend things were normal for a while.
He flat-ironed his hair less regularly. Martin grew more distant. He and Basira started working together, traveling together.
America wasn’t the best place to be, but he was tolerating it. They were hopping, motel to motel, never staying in one place too long. Staying in the same room, same bed sometimes. Didn’t matter much—Jon went to bed far later than Basira most nights, anyway. So he was careful.
Really, it was inevitable that it would happen.
They were watching a movie together, curled up on the motel room couch, closer than Jon would ordinarily have wanted to be but close enough to satisfy the pain in his skin when someone wasn’t near enough to him. He couldn’t remember a single plot point from the rest of the movie, but there was something happening with explosions and a girl with spiky hair.
“You good, Jon?” she asked, one hand on his head and one around the massive bowl of microwave popcorn.
“Tired,” he murmured, curling up against Basira. “Really tired.”
“You want to shower and go to sleep?” she asked, turning the volume lower on the TV. He shook his head, still leaning against her shoulder.
“You always go to bed so late, Jon. Please? For once?”
He sighed, curling up into a ball next to her. “I can’t.”
“And why can’t you?”
“Just can’t.” Words were becoming difficult. He didn’t want to compel her to answer him, force her to do anything, but it was getting harder and harder. “You’ll—”
“Jon. Please just… just sleep. I don’t care about seeing you ‘unprofessional’ or whatever, I just—”
“I don’t care about you seeing me like that, I care about you seeing me without my binder!”
There was a long silence, where Basira didn’t move. Jon could feel himself getting more and more tense, until she finally shifted on the couch to pull him closer.
“I’m not going to judge you for that, Jon,” she said quietly. “I bind, too. Not like you’re special or anything.”
He sighed in relief. And things got easier. Travel got easier when he wasn’t hiding anything from Basira, movement got easier now that he could take off his binder for several more hours a day than he had before. They made far better time getting around than they ever had before, likely due to the fact that Jon wasn’t constantly exhausted.
And then they returned to the Institute and things were different. Worse. They had to rescue Martin—or, more accurately, Jon had to rescue Martin, because that was the only way.
Things were not normal. Normal wasn’t real anymore. But…
+i. martin
…what things were, that was more difficult. If Jon had to put a pinpoint on it, he would say things were comfortable. A new kind of comfortable, of course, one that sat just to the left of the end of the world, but comfortable nonetheless.
Martin was, in the most complete sense of the word, perfect. He was so caring and generous and offered to do pretty much everything, since Jon was nearly incapacitated since the Lonely and had to use his wheelchair nearly constantly. They managed to live what could have been called a normal life for at least two weeks.
And then Jon managed to work himself into a panic over the fact that he hadn’t been on testosterone for three weeks, and locked himself in the bathroom to sit and cry.
“Jon? You in there?” Martin asked, gently knocking on the door. “Er, I mean, of course you’re in there, but are you alright? You, er, you’ve kind of been in there for quite a while…”
“Y—” He sighed. “No. I just—I didn’t—”
“Oh, you didn’t get to bring any testosterone with you, did you? Shit, Jon, sorry. I thought there was something off, you’ve been really moody. How many milliliters are you on? You can use some of mine.”
And that was that. No need to think about it, no need to worry. Just Jon and Martin, living their lives, going into town to get things from the market, being happy.
He could get used to this.

Hello, students of all ages! Since I graduated, I knew that I wanted to share advice with you guys and it will cover from studying to life and everything in between. So here it is, enjoy!
School:
Figure out what school works for you and your life: This is probably the first thing I normally tell people. Researching the schools that you want to go help narrow down your choices. Make sure that reading details carefully is also important for full understanding. There may be schools that offer specific majors that others may not, so make sure that there’s a full understanding of what the schools offer before making a decision.
Find out your major (and it’s okay to change it later): Knowing of what to major in can be difficult for people to narrow down. There are some people that double major in their college career. If you’re unsure of what to major in, try thinking of what career field you want to be in and find the major that is required. Remember, you choose how you live your life, even choosing your major.
Know what expectations are for the classes you’re taking:  Not every professor will be laid back or chill. The work can be difficult and hard to understand. Make sure that on syllabus day you are focused and take notes on the syllabus for later use. As long as you are trying in the class and talking to the professor, you should be fine. Getting a tutor does not make you any less than you are now (I had to have a tutor for my last quarter to help with my French. Was it degrading? No, not one bit. Did it help? Yes.) Talk to some people you may have the class with, join or create a study group. Everyone is in the class with the same goal: to learn.
Find a group, club, or organization to join: This one was a bit hesitant for me because being an introverted person (well, extroverted introvert), it took me until my junior year of college to join something I was passionate in doing. (I’m not going to lie, I didn’t know specifically what I wanted to do until late sophomore year into junior year specifically anyway). I found an organization, Her Campus, that helped me do what I love: writing/editing and helped me learn the skills I needed to learn. I knew that I wanted to work in magazines by the time of me finding HC and when it was brought to Tech (Louisiana Tech University), I knew I had to do it. Since then, I got the opportunity to make my work published through an official online blog that can be seen nationally and internationally, work with the best girl gang on campus, and be able to see what I could create.
Find different study tactics to help you:  Ever since I created this studyblr, I found different study tactics: from printables to schedules and everything in between. My go-to for studying were printables. I used ones from @theorganisedstudent ‘s essay planner (I swear by these because I majored in English and used these for every paper I wrote), weekly planner (to help with planning out commuting times, working, and study schedule around class times). I used @studyquill ‘s To-Do List, I constantly used this to make sure I kept track of all assignments and due dates and everything that popped up like random assignments to thought like “ extra credit assignment”. @emmastudies has a lot of wallpapers (which are adorable and amazing) I use those 100 percent of the time. The calendars are chic and available as well, I use the yearly ones. I see in the Studyblr community that people use the bujo templates for journaling, calendars, lists, etc. I didn’t have the skillset, time/patience to try it, but I may over the summer to see how it can turn out. I worked at a ratio of studying for 45 minutes and taking a break for 15 minutes. This helped me stay focused and know when to take a break without thinking about stopping. Remember that everyone is different and use what works for YOU.
Take classes that you’re interested in:  When you take classes that are interested in helps make learning fun. Now, there are required classes that are not in your interests and that happens. Try to find something that makes the course interesting. I would watch documentaries for history classes and watch videos (typically short Youtube videos) for psychology. This also helped me with troubling subjects as well.
ALWAYS be prepared:  the most important thing I did at the beginning of the quarter I would gather all the info I was giving off the syllabi and make a checklist. My checklist would have “electronics (computer, phone, maybe iPad) and chargers, planner, books, homework assignments, snacks/lunch, and headphones”. I brought these items with me every time I went to school. Now I wasn’t perfect, I still forgot things and I tried to make sure if I had extra chargers or headphones, I put them in a bag or specific holder (similar to this holder). For paperwork of any kind, I kept them in folders of some sort and kept them where I could find them. When I was a freshman, I didn’t receive a curriculum sheet (the paper that had the class requirements) for my major (this was before I transferred) until the last semester before transferring. Since then, I’ve always kept a copy of one for myself and had it with me when I would go to advising for classes.  It helped me keep track of what classes I needed to take and where I was at in my schooling. Review notes the night before, even if it’s right before you go to bed. Some professors require that you do the assignments before you get to class and it happens. Merge both previous notes and upcoming assignments in the same time frame to help make sure that you remember the last class’ lesson plus know about the new lesson. Try to plan ahead as best as you can in every way you can. Remember: not everything goes as planned, and there are more letters in the alphabet :)
Find a friend or two in each class: a trend at my university was making a GroupMe chat (or a chat of some kind) for classes in case we needed information. I’ve made a few friends in college and I even made friends with people internationally. Don’t stress over this factor cause sometimes it just happens. If you want to start a friendship or know someone, ask them about something in the class or about their major. This is a common icebreaker for college students. I also made friends with my professors because they were understanding, amazing, and open to helping students out.
Make a studying playlist: the best way to study is with classical/instrumental music because it keeps you focused and it won’t cause distractions. You can find playlists on Youtube, Spotify, and Pandora. Even create one for yourself. Music like soundtrack scores can also help
Look for internships and jobs ASAP: always be on the lookout for jobs, internships, even ask around to job shadow to see if you would like the career path. I found internships and I job shadowed while I was in school and it helped out tremendously. I did mine through Her Campus here.
Find your favorite spots on and off campus: there will be days when you’re going to be studying. Sometimes, being cooped up in your room doesn’t help you focus. Find a place that you’re comfortable being in: a coffee shop (mine was off campus), a student center, a place outside, anywhere where you can enjoy your surroundings and help you study. This can also be a sort of “time out” spot as well. If you have two places you like to be in, you can pick one to be a study spot and the other can be a wind-down spot.
Be realistic with yourself:  know yourself, know the workload and responsibilities that are at task. If you can’t handle it, find ways to break it down and handle it. If it gets overwhelming, reevaluate yourself and your situation. College is NOT easy, it will test you and push you to become better- that’s the point.
Change is not always a bad thing: change can be scary and it can either push you to be better or scare you. Pick your decision on if the change will scare you or let it push you.
Know everything you sign up for: Financial aid, work-study, any contracts, etc. Know everything about anything that you sign up for because you want full awareness of the situation.  You don’t want to be in a situation where you don’t get what you need or end up owing more than what you bargained for.
Keep receipts of EVERYTHING:  when I got my first debit card, I was told to keep my receipts for bookkeeping. If there were a situation where I would need to return something, you would have the receipt. I use this method for everything in my life from keeping my bank statements in a binder to keeping up with any large payments like tuition payments. It helped me keep up with everything I needed to. If you feel like you should have a copy of something, ask for one. Never doubt your gut.
Look for deals on textbooks:  there’s always somewhere where textbooks are cheaper. I used the school’s bookstore, Chegg, and Thriftbooks-  these were all lifesavers.
Life:
It will not always be perfect:  when I graduated from high school, I pictured that I would immediately jump into university like people would do in movies and books. Despite my efforts (and an endless amount of money and time in tutoring), I found myself not going into university and was able to go to community college (side note: there is nothing wrong with community college. If you are in this predicament, you are doing amazing and there is no shame in that). One: even though I was upset that I couldn’t make it how I imagined, I made a backup plan. My plan was to go to c.c. (community college) and then move up to uni (university). Two: I also found out that transferring was possible while in c.c. Even though it’s been four years later, I earned my Bachelor’s Degree and I don’t regret it.
Your situation may change: After my sophomore year, I made the decision to commute because it became expensive for me to live at uni. This may happen to you and that’s okay. I don’t think that moving back home was a bad choice. It did come with some up and downs like living an hour away from uni, spending more money on my car and its maintenance (plus gas), saving money for tuition, and being closer to family. Nothing is wrong with moving back home or even deciding to stay home during uni days. Don’t make matters worse for yourself for any reason.
Have fun, I mean it: college isn’t spending 24/7 on studying and going to classes (yes, please go to class- don’t skip class to have fun). You’re allowed to have fun. I managed my fun. I know myself enough to schedule my fun (and I had understanding friends that knew I took my studying seriously). There were some days where I would have no classes and would decide to use that time to work on assignments, papers, etc so that I could relax later. Or some weekends I would plan not to do anything (especially on Sundays- I call “Sunday Bumdays”) and take the day to unwind, work on self-care, explore, etc. If you can afford for one day of total nothingness, great. If not, try to attempt at a half-day. If you don’t have fun within your journey, it will look back on with either regret or disappointment.
Save money (and be strict about it): every penny matters. Save money for food, gas/ transportation, tuition/books, emergency savings, etc. There are going to be times where you will need money, even if it’s to grab lunch or go grocery shopping. Always have money in the bank and in your pocket. Find odd jobs to do or find a job if you need money. Most college students work part-time and go to school full-time. Don’t forget to treat yourself, and keep in mind to manage it so it doesn’t become a burden.
Learn things outside of the classroom:  learn things about your campus, people, the town you’re in, everything. Learning about things around you can help make you feel comfortable, even if you live away from the campus. It’ll help appreciate the environment around you and give you a better experience.
Find a healthy hobby to do:  I know college can be/will be exhausting. There is a solution to make sure that there is a healthy outlet for stress relief. Healthy hobbies such as exercise, photography, and exploring new things (crafting classes, movie nights, etc) can help relieve burn out and stress. Personally, I made this studyblr, I free wrote (writing with no agenda/reason), went to the gym, and walked around campus during sunset. I also wrote a short article on it here.
Make a routine:  I made a routine to help keep myself busy, know what was going on for the day and to be prepared. The routine would vary for the days depending on my schedules for work and school.
If you need extra help, ask:  there is nothing wrong with asking for help. Ask for it and don’t be afraid to.
Take care of your body in ALL forms:  mentally, physically, spiritually, emotionally, etc. From skincare to getting check-ups. All of it matters and your body and mind are important.
Make a resume and keep up with it: you will learn how to write a resume and clean it to help get you jobs and track your experiences and skills. Don’t slack on it because it is an important tool you will need.
Work:
Don’t overwhelm yourself:  work and school can be intimidating, especially when you’re involved with extracurriculars. Get a planner and make a plan for yourself. Remember: make time for yourself too.
Quirky things/ Etiquette:
thank you cards- I sent thank you cards to a bunch of people for different reasons. Like teachers- for teaching me things that helped me graduate, organizations that came to our booth for our organization that we hosted this year, people that gave me things like presents/ advice, and any job shadow/ internships- because it’s always nice to thank people that helped you along the way.
find things that are productive that doesn’t involve studying- you’ll go crazy without it and here.
organize your workspace- tips here
find stationary you love- it makes studying enjoyable even the worst subjects
say your “please”s and “thank you”s- I promise, it will go a long way. Even if you don’t use them, it can help a bad experience turn into a good one
don’t be afraid to think outside of the box- I’m serious, not everyone is traditional and that’s okay. Be comfortable with your life.
know the rules- yes there will be rules and weird ones that you will need to know/follow. There will also be protocols and policies to keep up with as well for things like on-campus living, rules of clubs/organizations, etc. Read them thoroughly.
don’t be rude- just don’t.
make business cards- it’ll make it easier for you in the long run and it’ll help you network
branch out-  look for new things to get involved in like poem slams, video game battle meetups, yoga classes, things like that to help expand your taste and experiences.
College will be different for everyone. It can be a different journey that is taken and it can make all the difference. Make it the best years for you.

I just started reading your True Magic fic and omg i love Marcia. Also makin me kinda wonder if i should look at student disney programs now that im in uni...
Tumblr media
Awww, thank you so much, honey!! I’m happy that you like my bb Marcia, especially since she was ever so slightly based on my dear mum, who I adore beyond reason. ^.^ It’s kind of weird looking back on TrueMagic now, considering how long it took me to write it and how personal the emotions in it were, but considering that Lack of Lamb Sauce understandably overshadowed any of my other works, I really appreciate that you gave Marcia’s story a chance!!
As for doing a Disney internship, I’d say that if you have any interest at all, definitely look into what’s available and weigh your options! I’m not going to act like working in the parks is right for everyone – even now that I’m a full-time Cast Member and not on the College Program anymore, I acknowledge that the job can be very difficult, very draining, and very disheartening at times. You have to deal with people getting angry at you for little reason, not listening when you tell them to do something for their safety, and demanding a lot without showing a lot of gratitude, and on top of that, you don’t get paid that well for it. But I think if you go into the position knowing that it is a job, even if it is also an exciting adventure where you get to work for Disney, make new friends, and bolster any future resumes with your experience, that might help you curb your expectations and help you find joy even when things get difficult. In my case, for instance, I have learned over the span of six years to embrace guest concerns and chaos at my job, because it then gives me the opportunity to turn those bad experiences around. If someone is having a rotten day, I suddenly have the chance to give their story – in other words, their vacation – a happy ending…and yes, although I won’t ever become a millionaire doing that, that means a lot to me. And oftentimes you don’t need to give those guests much else besides your time: it’s amazing how much asking a guest how their day is going or giving them a compliment can mean. If you do choose to try out one of Disney’s internships, I wish you all the luck in the world, and if you get it, I hope your experience is as magical as mine was!

hiiii sanne im currently going thru the process of applying for my masters n am stressed and worried about money and worried about whether I’m just wasting another year avoiding getting a job and getting too old blah blah so wanted ur input on this stage of life bc I feel u are always calm n ur posts abt ur summer job and uni are optimistic!!! plus it’s nice to ask some1 who doesn’t know me to get fresh insight whether this is fine sorry if it’s weird to ask randomly haha
hi angel!! honestly you just kinda described my own situation there bc ill be getting my bachelor’s degree soon and if all goes right i’ll be trying to go for a master’s too! so i really get your worries. especially about money.. it’s genuinely one of the scariest things in the world. first things first you’re never ever too old for any kind of education. god i know it feels like it in this day and age that past the age of 21 its like well im a fossil now! i should have my life sorted out. but my current manager studied till she was 28. my dad has 3 bachelor’s degrees and a master’s. my mom never even studied. i have friends who are my age and are only looking into higher education now. i have friends too who graduated when they were 22 and there was a 68 year old woman in my literature class last semester bc didn’t know what to do now she was done working. unless you’re so done with studying that you’re like god im too old for this i dont want to do this anymore i just want to work.. age really isnt a problem at all. also i don’t really know how and in what way i’ll be entering the job market so postponing that for some time is always very sexy. we’re gonna have to work till our 60s so if you enjoy studying just take as much time as you’re able to finanically and emotionally. i dont really know your financial situation but i know what you mean with worries regarding that :( im working this summer job to be able to pay for my master’s degree even though i’d rather be doing an internship for that extra experience on my cv but sometimes all u can do is just power through for your future self. what i did too was ask a student counselor for financial advice! not like.. budgeting but maybe there are jobs available at your uni or any programs you could apply for for financial aid. also just keeping in touch with a counselor regarding stress or doubts is always a good idea just so if you completely crash bc of stress that they already know what’s going on so it’s easier to get help and pick yourself up. i know i needed that sometimes! i do also know that 70% of students with a master’s degree from my university are able to get a job at an academic level within two months of graduating so that’s a big motivation for me! if you like studying i’d say please try to go for it. you’re not too old and you’re not wasting any time at all. you only fall behind in life if you get mean spirited and don’t care for personal growth. but you wanting to apply for your master’s tells me that that’s not the case at all! i have faith in you and whatever you do i wish you the best of luck!! to both of us :)) i think we can do it

Guess What? - 4/16/21
As you can tell, I'm trying to change up my titles when it comes to life updates instead of just saying..."life updates."
Nevertheless, in my blogpost, "Aaaaaand We’re Back On Schedule!" I talked about certain things that were happening with this internship opportunity.
Well...
I received an official offer for the internship yesterday and accepted!
As you may have read on my "About" page, my career goal is to become a career counselor, working at the University level. Essentially, I either want to work in Career Services, or a First-Year student office to help Freshman students transition into this new stage of their careers and lives in general. Therefore, I knew I wanted to find some type of internship that caters more to that.
That being said, I spoke with the career service counselor and first inquired about a possible internship within their office. Unfortunately, they did not have any available, but we then took time to look at other offices and our First-Year student office had an opening. I noted that, but didn't apply right away only because...I don't know, I was nervous?
But I put those feelings away LOL, and eventually applied the following week.
NOW LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT THIS DAY!!!!!!!!!!!
That morning, I was reading the Word (I'm in Exodus) and I was reading about Moses' birth (you know, and he was pushed down the Nile River (with his sister watching) and Pharaoh's daughter found him, but she needed a midwife. So the sister ran up and said, I know a midwife! And it was Moses' mom)
Basically, when I read that, I was like, "wow, that was like full circle! The mom gave away Moses to protect him, but ended up getting him back!" And then when I read my devotional, the author used the words "full circle" and I was like, "that's what I said!"
So after that, I went about my normal morning routine, and then finally sat down and applied for the internship. After applying, I received an interview opportunity that occurred the following week. Yet the person who interviewed me was the same person who interviewed me for my Founder's Scholarship back in my freshman year! And all I could think of was the phrase "full circle."
It was just...so crazy! I was like "Wow Lord...you just continue to order my steps." Like God is literally ordering my steps and sometimes, the little connections that pop up are just small blessings to me and I'm so thankful.
This is sort of something I have told myself that I wanted to work on; incorporating and reflecting on God more than just putting Him in certain categories (like, this morning I focus on Jesus, then I focus on uni, then I focus on assignments, etc., etc.). I really started that when I felt like God left me (see "First Blog Post"), and so I've really been working on getting back in the habit and seeing God throughout each area of my life, you know?
Because again...it's about relationship.
But yeah! That day was just something else, and now I'm just so thankful. And I had this goal on my Goal Board as well! I stated that I wanted to "secure an internship by the end of the Spring semester," and that's what happened! God just continues to show out.
Other than that, the week has been o-kay. I had a bio exam yesterday and it said that it was "late" and wants to give me a "0" even though it graded everything. So now my professor has to go in and manually grade it. I just pray that it does get changed because that really affects my grade...so that sort of stressed me out. But I'm just hoping it gets changed.
Nevertheless, I know things will get worked out and I'm just so thankful for this opportunity!

Traveling on a student budget
Set a limit
This basically means answering the question: how much am I comfortable spending on this trip? How much do I want to spend, ideally? And then, how much do I think I will spend, realistically? Work out those two numbers and try to find some middle ground.
That budget number is gold, do not forget it. You now have a $$ amount that is a limit, that you have to try very hard to not overpass. Take your debit/credit cards just in case but only use the extra money if very necessary. Discipline yourself to stick to your budget.
With this golden number in mind, you can now follow the next few steps at ease:
Planning
A successful trip has a good combo of effective planning and some fun spontaneous things along the way (missing your plane and taking a detour through Rome yass). But still, it’s always better to overplan than underplan, so you want to make sure you kinda know what you’re doing.
Start with figuring out WHERE you want to go and for how long (keeping the golden budget in mind). Don’t know? Check out Google Flights: you can see at a glance what goes where and what price. Compare return tickets and how much time you have available.
Pretty snazzy if you ask me.
Evaluating Transport costs
It’s not just the cost of getting there: the cost of traveling once there. Subways, buses, trains, etc. You don’t want the nasty surprise of having to pay an unplanned £14 ticket from Stansted Airport to get to the actual city of London. Be prepared.
In most of Europe there’s this amazing thing called Blablacar, a carpooling app that will connect you with drivers going to the same destination as you. Great way to save money AND meet cool people. I also use the website GoEuro to compare train, buses and flights from one place to another.
Accommodation
Ouhhh this is a big one. Where tf will I sleep? Will it be hostel? Airbnb? Dare I say… HOTEL?
Well, my biggest secret to spending only £135 on my trip to the East and West coast of Ireland was this amazing, beautiful app: Couchsurfing. So basically: free accommodation. This app is God’s gift to travelers, and it’s not only in Europe (I used it in some parts of Asia and I’ve heard people use it all over the world). The idea behind it is simple: someone has an extra couch, and you can sleep on it for free.
Why would someone offer their couch for free? Honestly, it’s a great way to travel without going anywhere. You meet people from all around the world with amazing stories and amazing experiences to tell. In exchange, the Couchsurfer gets a free bed and maybe even a bit of food. Pretty awesome right?
What if I get attacked? Unlikely, but always keep your wits about you. Check their profile, read their reviews, make sure you’re comfortable with staying at them beforehand (going with a friend helps).
99% of my Couchsurfing experiences have been top notch amazing. I’m still in contact with a few of them and have hosted one person myself (all about giving back to the community yeah). It might not be a long term solution, but it can be done for a night or two.
But of course, Couchsurfing is not for everyone. You also have hostels (Hostelworld), Airbnb and maybe some people you know in the area. Just make sure you roughly know where you’ll be staying for the length of your trip (last minute booking can get stressful).
Food
This one is tricky, and food budgeting while traveling is not a skill I have mastered yet (the pre-made wraps were FOUL). What I recommend? Setting a daily limit/budget on the amount you’re comfortable spending on food everyday while traveling (this will be incorporated in your golden budget already). Take some snacks from home too: chocolate, crackers, cheese, energy bars and fruit are pretty cool.
Touristing
If you’re doing a trip and planning on visiting the city, you’ll also be planning on doing some visiting, cultural or not (cough cough Amsterdam). You don’t have to plan to the very detail, but it helps to do a quick Google search of what touristy stuff you can do in the city and roughly what the price range is. Are there parks? Museums? Hikes? Weird monuments? Food to try? (the research will also get you excited for the trip). If you’ll be Couchsurfing, ask your Couchsurfer some tips on where to go, what to do, etc. Locals will know their city best!
Checking out local bloggers is also a great idea: Lonely Planet, NomadicMatt, etc.
Other options
We are truly lucky in this day and age to be able to travel so much. And actually, we are even luckier to be able to take it a step further: packing your bags and going for good. Aka long term travel. This means staying in that country/city for several months, getting to know the culture, the language, the food and making local friends. This option is not always available to everyone, but when it is, I recommend to grab it quick.
You can:
Study abroad: Erasmus and other programs will help you do a semester or year abroad. Or you can plan it yourself (me doing a random semester at uni in China). Check out what other bloggers have been doing: Amelie blogged about her experience studying abroad in the UK. This is a truly amazing way to travel as a student. You get to experience the local life, you get to study your subject and you really get to travel and explore the culture. Definitely a must. And many times it won’t cost you that much more.
Take a gap year: I was slightly shocked when I heard gap years weren’t really a thing in the US. I honestly think every single college student should take a gap year before starting university. The experience is unforgettable and prepares you for life better than college itself. Oh, and it’s not expensive if you do it right. If you do your research well, you can totally make your gap year achievable through volunteering or working abroad:
Volunteer abroad: I don’t have any personal experience with this, but from what I’ve researched this is awesome. Many times the companies will offer free housing and maybe even free food in exchange for some volunteering time. Opportunities range from community work to raising awareness for environment. GoAbroad and VolunteerHQ have some cool programs.
Work abroad: This could be an internship, another program of some sort, or simply finding a job once you get to the country. Universities can also help you plan this out. Check out STA travel and Go Abroad for more info. I did au pairing (looking after kids and living with the family) for a few months and that was a great experience in a foreign country. You can also get your TEFL and teach English in Asia. So many opportunities.
Online university: This is the route that I am about to embark on. The full on, traveler-student mode. Traveling while studying online. This is really for those who want to try some hardcore traveling and are ok with missing out on the traditional college experience. Maybe just one semester, but it’s a great way to not completely halt your studies and have some more flexibility.

Inky’s Guide to Getting Accepted in Art School
Even though application season is mostly over now, I think this article might be helpful if you want to apply in summer semester or want to wait until next year to start your studies.
Some friends and siblings of friends asked me some stuff since I’m some kind of veteran and eventually got in, so I thought I might just collect all my advice into some kind of (really long) masterpost.
I’m from Germany, so I can’t talk about other countries, but I think about US-colleges are enough posts already going around. I think I will divide this in several steps that guide you through this. (Feel free to skip parts, lol)
Step 1: What do I want to study? Step 2: Where do I want to study? Step 3: What does the uni require? Step 4: ~The Portfolio~ Step 5: The Entrance Exams Step 6: Waiting
Step 1: What do I want to study?
Not every art school is the same, and depending on what you want to study specifically, there might be one better than the other, but only in that prospect. Do you wanna be an architect, interior designer, a classic illustrator, animator, game/concept artist, graphic designer, product designer, web designer, film maker, typographer, photographer, or the classic student of liberal arts? (of course there are even more professions out there)
Look for what you wanna do, and related studies! Look at what the jobs usually require, or what your role models/idols studied, and then go from there! Usually they also mention their universities, so check them out if they still offer the same or a similar degree.
But there are also studies which include several branches - this is great if you can’t really decide on one thing yet, or if you want to be qualified to do several things during your lifetime (this is me btw)!
Don’t be immediately put off by alternatives/related studies or narrow your view on only one specific study. Sometimes it takes time to see the benefits of a certain degree that you didn’t want to consider beforehand, but that usually happens after you got out of your lane.
You got an idea of what you want to study? Great. Now:
Step 2: Where do I want to study?
This one is one of the more difficult and probably most time-intense question. Or, actually, it consists of several other questions:
1. Do I want to go to a public or a private school?
This, usually (at least in Germany) is a question of money. There are a lot of private schools which might be good and “easy” to get into but they are especially one thing: pricey. If you happen to have big funds to 1) support your living, 2) the high tutition fees, know you’ll have a scholarship secured for the entity of your studies, or are not afraid to get a loan to pay for your several hundred euro fees per month, then you might want to try private schools. However, most people don’t have such an access to money and thus prefer to go to public school where you have roundabout 300 or so euro per semester, your public transport ticket included.
2. Where can I study the subject I’m interested in?
Some studies are available at almost every town that has a somewhat medium-sized or sometimes also smaller university/college. Some are actually taught on only one or very few and very prestigious unis/colleges in the country if you don’t want to go to private ones.
If the former, lucky you! You can allow yourself to think about the questions below. If the latter - prepare for not making it the very first time while simultaneously working your ass off.
If there are really just a few unis which offer your preferred studies, actually spend time and money on visiting the town(s) and checking out the uni(s) yourself. Try to go to the scheduled portfolio classes/feedback the profs and sometimes also students offer as you can already collect impressions of who the people are you want to spend your next few years with. In my experience, if you don’t click well with the people there or you feel highly uncomfortable in a way that hinders your creativity, listen to your gut feelings and perhaps reconsider. I don’t mean the “I’m so nervous so many people I don’t know!” anxiety. Think what pushes you further in your works and your over-all development, and then check if they offer you the needed stimulation and critique you can work with. Also try to sense how the atmosphere is, especially between students and profs, and if it’s an atmosphere you think you can work with and imagine yourself within, or not. I found that, even if the studies sound like your wet dream, if I’m unhappy with the surroundings and don’t feel somewhat connected to the people that teach me, I don’t get to my best, and that’s not what I want. Looking for “your” uni is some sort of self-discovery and checking with what you’re okay, and with what you’re not.
3. How far away from home do I want to live?
Some people are driving home to their families nearly every weekend, others want to have as much space between their parents as possible - if you have the opportunity to choose where you want to study, this is something you might want to consider. Think about travelling costs and how long you’ll hit the road, but also living costs and if it’s possible for you to move to another town.
4. Do I have a close friend/group of friends/a partner who I want to stay with and not be miles apart?
There are several options here: 1) jump into the cold water. Some things need to be done alone and you might find new friends/partners you don’t need to give up your dream for. Sometimes you realise that you don’t even mind breaking apart with people who were actually dear to you. Sometimes, your bond is strong enough to withstand the hardships of distance. 2) If your friend(s)/partner is looking for a place to study/work/whatever, too, and thus is (relatively) flexible with moving with you, look for places where it’s possible for both parties to stay. Check towns which offer both your studies, or have a relatively close distance to another town which offers the other party’s subject. There it’s the most logically that the person who has the most limited options gets most of the say. Still, you won’t know for sure sometimes whether both of you will get accepted or not.
5. Which university’s profile works with me?
Especially in the creative field, I really wouldn’t underestimate this! Look at the uni’s claim, check out the study’s module structure, and try to get behind the philosophy of the university and its teachers. It’s easiest to talk to students and alumni on this as they have experience on what their uni focusses.
Are they focussing more on free artistic expression, or do they want to show you what’ll make you fit for the business world?
Are they working a lot with concepts or are they d’accord with whatever?
Do they want you to have your own signature style or are the students more or less copies of their profs?
Is there a certain genre/style the uni prefers/teaches? How does your style and approach fit into it?
Will you have to specialise or can you keep my options open even until the very end? Is it a pace you are comfortable with?
There is nothing bad in either of the options. It is a highly individual choice to make, and not everyone needs the same. It is about if you feel like you’ll fit in and get something out of it that you think/feel you need.
6. Do I like the town?
Sometimes, it is love at first sight, sometimes you grow fond of it during the first few months, sometimes you just won’t warm up at all. You just need to picture that you’re stuck in this town probably for a few years until you can actually move away, so it’s worth thinking about it. Is there everything you need nearby, or do you need to drive to the next town until you finally get The Thing? How are the demographics? How okay do you think the people are with some crazy actions you gotta do because of an uni project? Is there an established student community? Artistic scene? What about lgbtaq+ community? Any other hobbies I want to continue? - The list is very long but it’s nothing I personally thought about too hard. The thing I worried about most was whether or not I’d find a place to live as soon as I was accepted.
Step 3: What does the uni require?
In most cases, their website will tell. Most want you to hand in a portfolio (occassionally with a “homework” to a specific theme that changes per semester) and you need to participate in an entrance exam, and/or a personal interview. Some others want you to (additionally) have an internship in the respective field under your belt - that may vary from just a few weeks to actual YEARS, or an apprenticeship.
And, if you don’t believe you are highly artistically gifted, having your A-levels isn’t something to scoff at either. After all, you’ll be studying.
So really, inform yourself, and I even kicked out a few because I knew I’d be wasting way too much time on the application process alone, or simply didn’t understand what they wanted me to have, as I am a very direct person.
This is also the time to check in if they have any portfolio feedback scheduled. Bring a bunch of your own stuff that you’d think somewhat portfolio-worthy, and just listen to what they say. When I applied for HAW Hamburg, both times I had no idea where their focus was on. First time, I got accepted but failed one entrance exam, the second time, my portfolio failed, and I didn’t know why. Now I know that they are really into traditional drawings, which I provided the first time, but the second time I had a lot of digital works printed out that (now) aren’t really that good.
There is actually a website that focusses on portfolios from most universities in Germany, where people can upload their accepted portfolios and describe the entrance exams. [precore.net] It helps to get a feeling for what certain fields of study or the universities are looking for, but don’t obsess over it too much. Take it as advise, not as non-plus-ultra.
Step 4: ~The Portfolio~
So, here it’ll get very, very specific on what I’m studying/have applied for (communication design, illustration), I have literally no idea for architecture, or product and interior design.
Again, every university has a different focus (hint at precore.net), and it also heavily depends on what precisely you want to study, but I have found a few rules for myself that worked quite well:
The Rule of Thirds is working with basically anything conceptual (I believe): 1/3 of your portfolio shows your ideas, conceptual thinking, and work process, 1/3 is your technique, and the last 1/3 is composition and finished works.
Show who you are, not what you think they want you to be (or else this is not the right place for you).
Try to keep it cohensive. Especially in the field of design, a lot of people stress to have the “Red Thread” through your portfolio. Some dedicate half a year entirely to their portfolio and create it from the scratch. I haven’t done that, I’ve always used older works in combination with newer ones, but I barely created solely for the portfolio. However, what I did was selecting my works according to some kind of theme that I thought summed up my works best and what I wanted to achieve with my works. It helps incredibly much to select.
Profs are sluts for sketchbooks. They want to learn about your working process and your interests. This kind of is a part of The Rule of Thirds.
Don’t be scared of something new. Try out something you’ve never/ barely done before, whether it be another subject (we all have our preferences - whether it is because we think it more interesting or simply easier - and take something you usually don’t take, something you think is boring, or struggle terribly with, and see how it goes!), material (never done graphite? try it!), or even medium (more of a drawing person? test out photography). Make a few studies to test it out, and perhaps it turns out good! Profs appreciate openness and the courage of facing your demons. But don’t get discouraged if it doesn’t go well - learning process has a huge value if you can see it, but if you really don’t like it, don’t take it. You just won’t know unless you try.
Don’t be scared of mistakes. Your portfolio doesn’t need to be perfect, it needs to be you in first place. In most cases, if you can carry your message, you basically won already.
Don’t just copy something. Enhance it, or create something new! It’s nice that you can replicate a photorealistic Daniel Radcliffe as Harry Potter, but how does it enhance the photo you took as reference? If you’re unlucky, you even messed up the proportions a little. Try as little as possible to rely on only photos as references, and draw from life. It might be more difficult for some, but it also forces you to get down the essencials of your subject, and you end up learning more.
Keep in mind that for animation or film, you probably need to hand in animations or clips, so plan enough time (and money if you need the equipment) for that.
Check your university of how many works they want you to hand in. Most have a minimum, some a maximum. If they don’t say anything, usually 20-30 works are fine. They usually also have a limited size, no bigger than A1 is what I’ve found most, so bear in mind to photograph bigger works or e.g. sculptures.
Some ways to either get your work count up or down: work in series! Technically, one series is one work, but I haven’t seen anyone who would not let them pass as individual works in some kind of context either.
The Presentation of Your Portfolio
Selecting your works is one thing - how you hand them in another.
Think about how big your works are, and adjust the rest accordingly within the uni’s parameters. Some want you to write your name on it, some ask you especially not to as you’ll get a number on a form so they can evade accidential favouritism.
More on the folder’s appearance: Usually, it’s enough to just hand in a folder of a good size for your works. None of my works were bigger than A3, so I sticked them onto I think B2-sized cardboards (more on that later) and had a folder for B2. It had been grey as they were the cheapest made from recycled cardboard. Others go crazy (like this dude here - still one of my favourites) and include their afore mentioned theme in the folder, like sewing one from a comforter. Yeah, people do that. Again, I didn’t do it and I guess most people don’t, so don’t stress out too much over it. As I said, some unis even request you not to.
Then bear in mind that people will need to look through your works - ideally without directly touching them and messing them up. Some actually laminated their drawings or put them into a folder with clearfiles. I personally didn’t like those options much as they are mostly expensive especially in bigger sizes, and you need to work with the reflection of the surface. I used grey cardboard (I think ~300g/m² ?) so it wouldn’t be wobbly but also not too heavy (30 B2 cardboards can get really heavy, just sayin’) and sticked my pictures onto them. This way I also could show my original pencil drawing and the digitally coloured version on the same board, or put a series together without them mixing up the order. I also didn’t ruin the back of my originals with something like what number in the portfolio they have (and people didn’t touch them!) I think in the good ol’ days people actually used paspartouts for their portfolio, but this is very time-intense and nobody I know does this outside of real vernisages or something.
Then, I mentioned before, names! Perhaps the uni doesn’t want you to put yours on the folder, but sure as hell you should write down the name under which you’re applying on the back of each of your work (or cardboard if you do it the way I did). The jury needs to handle so many portfolios, and yes, sometimes it happens that things get mixed up for whatever reason. In most cases they also want you to write down the date of when you created your work and what studies you’re applying for. However, if the uni requires you to write an index of your portfolio, rather write the date on the index. On the index usually goes 1) Number of your work, 2) Title of your work (if you have one - otherwise just say “Pencil Study 1-3″ or something alike), 3) Date of creation, 4) Materials used, and occassionally credits if it was a collaboration or you quote another artwork. Now you need to pay close attention and sort your works accordingly to the number you assigned them, and also write that number down on the back of it!
I personally ordered my works in a way that had some kind of story arch or suspense, others order them chronologically or according to the media used. This is entirely up to you and what you think suits your portfolio best. In the end, the profs will rearrange them anyway as they seem fit, perhaps because they are rather curious about the ones above or just were unsure about them. If you’ll have an interview with them, it’s most likely that they want to talk with you about them and ask some questions.
Now is also the time to save up some (a lot) of money. Depending on where you are applying, hotels and train tickets can become rather expensive, not to forget the art supplies you might need. It’s safe to say you might spend 200-400€ on the application process, portfolio together with the entrance exams.
How to get your portfolio to the profs
In most cases you have to hand in your portfolio before you even get accepted for the entrance exams. If so, you basically got two options:
Mailing
Check in on your postal service and consider how big and heavy your portfolio turns out, usually you can print the package stamps yourself if you do it online (it’s usually also a bit cheaper). Also remember to send a blank patch with your portfolio so the uni can send your portfolio back to you, they usually don’t want to spend any money on those things. Otherwise you need to go and fetch it yourself. Mailing is great if you live quite a distance away or can’t easily travel to the portfolio’s destination (e.g. through work, health issues, you name it) but also keep in mind that packages usually travel more slowly than a normal letter. So calculate enough time that you don’t just hit the deadline with it. Usually, universities take the date it arrives and not the one on the stamp! A thing you might want to consider: package insurance. Depending on how bad your postal service treats the mail and how dear your portfolio is to you, it might be a wise investment.
Handing it in personally
If you live near-by, want to visit the town, or simply are scared to send it off per mail, handing in the portfolio yourself is a nice option. I did it the first time I applied for Illustration, and it was a great way to visit the university I was applying to because it was far away and I didn’t have the chance to go beforehand. I also did some kind of sight-seeing because it was the first time I actually could spend a whole day in Hamburg. Also check in if your uni of choice has only a few days where you can come and hand it in personally! Sometimes the schedule is the same as with mailing, but sometimes it differs. Better safe than sorry! Some tips if it’s farther away, though:
If you have to travel a long way, try to get someone else go with you, especially if you planned in a LOT of time until your train back is leaving. At some point you’d probably run out of ideas what to do.
Take enough money with you so if anything unforseen happens, you are safe. Even if it’s just for a short trip to the museum because it started raining.
Plan it basically like a day trip. After all it’s a great way to discover your hopefully new home!
But remember to think about how you want to get your portfolio back! Do you want them to mail it, or do you want to collect it yourself? If you want them to mail it, include a stamp since most unis won’t pay for it. If you want to get it yourself, make sure to check what dates are possible.
Now it’s basically just waiting for the invitation to the exams (or the rejection letter).
Step 5: The Entrance Exams
Either you need to wait forever until you (finally) receive the invitation after sending your portfolio away - or you actually hand in the portfolio when you’re already at the exams (no kidding, some unis do this, such as Wiesbaden), not knowing if you’ll be among the “selected few” or really just a nobody who sucks.
Now, see how long the exams will be - some are done within one day, others take three or four days.
As soon as you know that you will be taking the exams (and it’s nowhere near your home town):
Look for hotels you can actually pay, or try consider youth hostels (they usually much cheaper since you’ll be sharing a room, plus you might get to know some of the other applicants). Know how long you will stay and calculate accordingly.
Plan your trip. Usually it’s easier to arrive the evening before the exams start, that way you have the chance to actually get enough sleep, so book your train tickets accordingly. With a car you are usually more flexible but keep in mind that you also need to park it somewhere and not every town has enough car parks for that.
Check what material the uni requires from you so you actually can participate in the exams. Go through your inventory at home and check what you’ve got. In my experience, if you didn’t have participated in entrance exams before, you will need to do some big shopping, and remember that art supplies are expensive. If you’ve been clever, you saved up a bunch of money.
If you work with different media than the disciplines in the entrance exam, test the new techniques/media beforehand. You don’t want to work with watercolours if you have no idea what you’re doing.
Some unis want you to arrive with your own photo camera - if you don’t own one, ask friends, family, and acquaintances! Also let them explain the mechanics of it throughoutly and test it beforehand because it’s a life-saver if you actually know your equipment.
Try not to pack too much clothes, especially if you need to still bring your portfolio with you! You will need some space designated for all your art supplies. Travel in a way that you can carry your portfolio folder comfortably together with the rest of your luggage.
Especially if you need to hand in your portfolio the first day of the exams, you might need to finish the portfolio in your hotel room - but keep in mind that you probably shouldn’t touch-up the works themselves but rather check if everything’s in the correct order and sticks properly to your cardboard. Don’t do anything else but the formalities, for the rest it’s definitely too late now.
Try to get a good night’s rest. Depending on your emotional state and how often you already did this, the exams can be quite draining. Get a rich breakfast that still is easy on the stomach, most people will feel queezy at some point and you really don’t want to throw up on your half-finished piece.
Try to be early. At least be on time, it’s something important for your future so treat it as something like that.
Before the exams start, try to talk to other people. It’s easier than you might think because everyone is somewhat nervous and will be happy to have some distractions. Also you immediately have some conversation starters: Where are you from? How was your ride here? First time applying here? Did you apply elsewhere? What are you most excited about? yadda yadda yadda. I know that a lot of artistic people are shy, me included, but this once, grid your teeth and try to get into contact with other people. This way you can cheer each other on, and you won’t feel so alone within the masses that are in the entrance exam. Plus, chances are if you get in, you already know someone.
In your exams, stay cool. Your work doesn’t have to be perfect, mostly it just needs to be imaginative. A good idea almost always wins over a bad technique because technique is something you can learn. Read your assignments carefully. If you need to, invest more time in understanding the task and just work faster as soon as you know what you need to tackle. Also, while a lot of people tell you that you always should look for better ideas even though you are convinced your initial idea was really solid already, I found it not necessarily true. Of course you shouldn’t close your eyes immediately on other options, but (depending on the time you’ve got for the task) if you don’t come up with something better within the next 15 min, go for it. To me, the exams always had something very instinctive. The exams are mostly too short for hesistation. Just be convinced of your idea, and if you can get this across, you’re already half-way there. If you’re done with your task, read the work sheet closely one more time, check if you included everything required, and then hand it in. Don’t try to touch it up any more, it most likely will ruin it. Entrance exams are nothing where they expect you to produce a masterpiece within 1-3 hours. It’s all about time and just working on it. It’s about calculating and reducing to the necessities. You won’t get bonus points if you go into details whereas the actual focus of your work lies somewhere else. Sketching helps you a lot for this, so try quick sketches at home before you have your exams, it can save your butt.
If you can’t keep your cool: Sit back. Straighten your back, close your eyes, breathe deeply and count to ten. This is just one picture you have to draw, just some text you need to write. It’s nothing more.
And, if you have second throughts because everything feels so easy “but shouldn’t” - really, be happy about this. I know it’s a terribly awkward feeling when you sit among so many people groaning about how hard it is while you’re just “idk it’s not that difficult.” It’s as though you didn’t see the backside of the paper or something. Generally, this is a good indicator that you’re actually good at it, though. You’re probably under less stress because you’re more experienced, just have a good day, or just are better prepared and have more advanced skills. Don’t feel weird about this, you might actually belong to the better “selected few” in the end.
The Interview
In a lot of unis, you will have an interview after being among the more successful contestants. It is most likely you will be much more nervous before that than while taking the exams because you just took the exam and are so much closer to your goal than before.
To get you off adrenaline highs, study breathing techniques. It helps not feeling like faining while talking to your future profs.
Try to talk to the others waiting with you. Everyone is nervous and excited, so that’s a perfect conversation starter. They most likely will be in a lot of your classes, so really, be nice. Apologise if you are snappy/gruff, they will understand it’s mostly your nerves talking, or at least assume it is. Also: Collect phone numbers! If you haven’t already, at least have one person’s number or facebook profile so you can fret together while waiting for the final results. If you both get in, this might be the chance to actually already have a flatmate!
Be nice to your profs! Don’t get cocky because you got into the “inncer circle” - if you are an ass and over-confident, they most likely won’t pick you. If you practically demand them they take you, it won’t score you any bonus points because if you’re that good, why do you even need to study?
However, be yourself. Be honest, and it’s also okay to admit to the profs that you’re hecking nervous because that means it matters a lot to you.
Prior to the interview, think about what inspires your work the most! Do you have illustrators/artists/designers etc. that you admire? Someone who made you think that these studies are actually your dream? Why did you choose this uni? Did you apply somewhere else? Where do you want to go with your degree later? What do you think is very important to you as a person and you as an artist/designer/whatever?
For example: I admired Tatjana Hauptmann since I was a child and wanted to become an illustrator because of her. Claire Hummel inspired me to actually become a character designer, it was the first time I learned this profession even existed, plus I love her work. I chose my studies at this university because it includes everything I want to be later: Illustrator, character designer, storyboard and comic artist, and director. I want to work in all of these fields at least once in my lifetime because there is so much I want to create. I personally love the storytelling that art provides as I believe storytelling is a very human thing.
This actually is already good to think about before you even start with your portfolio! As soon as I realised “Storytelling is My Thing!”, this was how I could connect my older works with the new, and it fit. Talk about what you enjoy about making art, talk about your inspiration, things that make you starry-eyes and go through the world with wonder.
Step 6: Waiting
The most horrible thing. You can’t do anything about it and usually sit at home for several weeks until you might receive another letter from your university of choice. Usually, there are two options:
1. You got in. Congratulations! If you need to move out, secure yourself a cheap and comfy place as soon as possible. If you were clever enough to exchange phone numbers or befriend people on facebook, it’s a tad easier to find a place to live. You either already have a flatmate, or you have someone who knows the town.
2. You didn’t get in. This isn’t the end of the world, even if it might seem that way. You usually can apply twice at each creative studies, so learn from the experience. If you applied a second time and didn’t get in, think long and hard if maybe this university isn’t truly your place to be. Look for other unis that offer the same/similar studies, maybe with a different mind-set on some things, and apply there. Though, if you got declined by several unis, maybe consider another profession. It’s not great to think about this like that, but sometimes you also need to know when to pick your fight, and when to give up. There are plenty of (popular!) artists who never got a formal education and actually pursue art only as a hobby. There is nothing shamefull in that.
Also get rid of the idea that only because you have an “artistic talent”, you are unable to pursue science or maths! It by all means isn’t mutually exclusive, my own backup-plan was becoming a chemist. I know a lot of friends who become nurses, engineers, computer scientists, or phsychologists instead of artists/designers but still keep their hobby and that quite successfully.
TL;DR: Be prepared and think stuff through, but please don’t stress yourself out. Be yourself, be honest with yourself and others, and you’re ready to go!
I hope this somewhat helped a few of you!

Fool for You – Kai Havertz One Shot
For the anon who requested a jealous Kai Havertz. :)
Part 2 here.
Huge thanks to @4rsene-wenger for your help on this! <3
Kai yawned and rubbed his eyes as he trudged with the rest of the team along the mountain trail. The sun has not even risen yet when the coaching staff rallied them for the hike. Light breakfast was served, which they ate grudgingly, and Kai noticed everyone’s mood reflecting the dreary morning when they stepped out of the hotel.
The idea was met with well hidden groans from his teammates when it was announced the previous day. Kai would have joined them if he didn’t look across the room and see Sophia nodding enthusiastically as the new coach explained the objectives of the activity. She was probably the only one in the room who was excited besides their coach, who came up with the idea.
Sophia was an intern of the marketing staff and was probably three years older than him. She was funny and lively. Kai couldn’t help but steal glances when she’s around, which was most of the time because she posts the club’s activities on social media.
Kai felt another yawn coming when someone clapped him on the shoulder.
“Hey, you,” the voice said behind him and he quickly stifled his yawn.
Sophia caught up with him, a huge grin plastered on her face. Her hand was still on his shoulder. “Are you okay?”
He straightened his back, which was difficult when his whole body went rigid with the touch. He chuckled nervously. It was the first time she talked to him since she joined two weeks ago.
“Isn’t this such a great idea?” Sophia said cheerfully as she skipped beside him. “It’s both physical and symbolic, just like Heiko said, and I couldn’t agree more. I’m excited for the new season!”
“Yes,” Kai croaked, and it was all he could muster. He swallowed hard, trying to minimize his panting but to no avail. Every breath that went out of his mouth formed a cloud, and he was producing too many clouds than he would’ve liked. He was dying.
Sophia didn’t seem to notice his struggle. She took out the club’s official phone and snapped a photo of the group walking ahead of them. She turned to Kai. “I missed this. I used to go hiking with my friends every summer but uni is such a pain the ass. Don’t get me wrong, I love this internship. This is probably the best thing that happened in my whole student life. In my whole life to be honest. But someday I want to go hiking in Asia and –“
Sophia suddenly stopped at mid-sentence and gave the cutest chuckle Kai has ever heard. “I’m sorry, I talk too much! You probably think I’m annoying. I think I’m annoying too and damnit there I go again. I’m sorry!” She clamped a gloved hand over her mouth.
Kai couldn’t help but laugh. “No, it’s okay. Uhm… I- I love listening to you talk. I mean it makes the climb easier.” He looked down, blushing, when he realized his straightforwardness.
Sophia’s face lit up like the sun that was beginning to rise. “You are too nice,” she said. “I would love to talk some more but I might lose my internship if I don’t get to work now.”
He watched as she jogged ahead, her energy and enthusiasm unrivaled.
“See you at the top!” she shouted, waving.
Kai felt as if he were already there. On top of the world even.
***
It was the last day of practice at Zell Am See, and Kai was watching Sophia take a video of Kevin Volland and Jonathan Tah doing keepy uppy. She was laughing – and he loved her laugh – but she was having so much fun with them and not him. Jona was teaching her how to do keepy uppy and he was touching her legs. Something inside him started to boil. He suddenly remembered how these two assholes made fun of him with the whole let’s-slap-the-fuck-out-of-Kai-to-wake-him-up. Was Sophia in on the joke? Did she think it was funny too?
Sophia was counting her keepy uppy and shrieked when she lost the ball at ten counts. Jona was recording it on his phone. His phone. It must have been a feat since she high-fived him and Volland and they celebrated with a selfie.
Kai glared at them bitterly.
“Practice time,” Stefan announced as he approached the younger player, handing him the neon green bib to put on top of his shirt.
Kai looked at Jona and Volland as they put on the same bibs.
“I’m joining the other team,” he said abruptly. He jogged towards Marlon to switch sides with him before Stefan could protest.
Kai focused on Jona who was dribbling the ball, looking for a teammate to pass it to. He sped towards him but Jona was quick to pass it to Brandt up front.
“Kai, what the hell!” Sven shouted. “Stay in your position!”
But Kai was chasing Jona again as the ball was passed back to him. Jona picked up speed and so did Kai, and when he saw an opportunity, he tackled the center back. It was a poor challenge and he ended up crashing against the bigger player. He twisted his ankle and it got dragged under his weight. He screamed in pain.
“What the fuck!” Jona exclaimed. Both players fell hard on the ground.
Kai was gasping for air as he clutched his ankle. He squeezed his eyes shut as the medical staff fussed over him.
Back on the bench, the coach was furiously spewing words but Kai couldn’t care less. He stared blankly at his bandaged ankle. Pain kept shooting up his leg and it was the only thing he could feel. Not embarrassment. Not frustration. Not his silly feelings for Sophia.
When the coach was done reprimanding him, the doctor asked if there was anyone who could take him back to the hotel to rest.
“I- I can do it,” a female voice said, bringing Kai back to his senses.
He turned his head to the direction of the voice and found Sophia’s face full of worry.
The coach was right. He was stupid.
***
Sophia carefully helped Kai get into the passenger seat of the rented hotel car.
“Oh god, I haven’t driven in years, but don’t worry, I’ve got this,” Sophia said as she pulled out of the parking lot.
Kai stared at the scenery on his window and didn’t say a word.
“I hope there are no fans waiting at the hotel,” Sophia said, chuckling nervously. “I mean I don’t want them to get the wrong idea when it’s just the two of us alone in your room. Some of them wouldn’t even consider that you’re injured and – oh my god are you crying?”
She quickly pulled to the side of the road and turned to Kai. “Are you hurting? I’m calling the doctor –”
“Why not?” Kai asked quietly, tears streaming down his cheeks.
Sophia stopped dialing midway. “Sorry?”
“Why don’t you want to be seen with me? Is it because I’m younger? Would you care if you’re seen alone with Jonathan?” he spat, his voice quivering.
She frowned. “I- I don’t know what you’re… I didn’t mean it in a bad way, Kai.”
Kai brushed his tears angrily. His whole face was red.
Sophia leaned back on her seat and stared ahead. Her breath was caught up in her throat. “Do… Do you think I like Jona?”
“Do you?” He looked ahead too, afraid to see her reaction.
She shook her head. “We’re just friends. I don’t think you could even call it friendship, since he would probably forget me once my internship is done. He’s just nice enough to approach me when I was too intimidated to talk to any of the players.”
“Including me?”
Sophia chuckled softly. “Including you. You’re too quiet. I wish… I wish we could talk some more, you know?”
“Is this... Is this how we should start?” he asked.
“Yes,” she answered. “If you want…”
Kai bit his lip and nodded. He looked so cute with his fiery red cheeks and bright blue grey eyes.
Sophia smiled. Something tells her it was the start of something more. It wasn’t hard to like him back.
In fact, she was almost there.

Hey Kuri. I just need a little life advice. How did you find your call in Teaching? I'm kinda struggling right now trying to find what I want to do with my life. Im going back to college soon but the subject I'm studying isn't what I'm interested in. I've tried to love it but its been difficult. I often times feel like a disappointment to my family because my siblings are all doing great and I feel like a loser not getting there yet.
Strap in, there, Anon, this’ll be a long one…
If I’m being honest, my call isn’t teaching - it’s writing. Even now, though I have a Big Girl Job and everything, which pays my bills and keeps my fur babies in food and toys, I consider my writing to be my real job. Even if, at the moment, it’s just writing fanfiction.
The first piece of advice I would give you for anything in your future is to do something you love. That way it will never be a chore and you will stick with it longer than five minutes.
Now, on the heel of that, the second piece of advice is: if you can’t pursue your passion, pursue something you don’t hate. And it might take you a while to figure out what that is.
I graduated high school with pretty decent grades, went to a good college and did well there (Liberal Arts), and I applied to university hoping to major in Creative Writing and Minor in German Language. My outside logic was: it would help me get into a writing field like journalism or translation. Inwardly, I figured I was just taking university courses while I was busy writing my novel and that before graduating I would be published and famous and rich.
Yeah, eighteen-year-old me was a bit of a naive idiot.
Cue life-experience:
My parents were kind of wary about the whole thing, they didn’t really believe I was doing a good thing, but it was my choice and they had to respect it. They knew what I didn’t, but would learn for myself. At the time I was also working in a bookstore, which while not my passion or anything, I actually enjoyed. Work never felt like work, and for minimum wage, that’s a good thing.
Flash forward to my first semester of university, in which I learned that a) my German skills were beyond what I could be taught at uni and I wouldn’t be able to take half of the courses I needed to fill my minor, so it was basically a waste of time to take and b) my Creative Writing classes basically centered around having a published author (and I use this term loosely to define a person who self-published one grungy, literary shock fiction and passed it off as literature) get up and talk about how to write. And not write actual good stories with decent plots and characters and such, but the gritty, sensory, detailed lyrical crap…and if you didn’t try to write exactly like that person, they flunked you.
So trying to follow my first passion didn’t exactly pan out.
I ended up switching my degree completely, majoring in Classical Civilisation and minoring in History. I figured, I love history, and I love research, maybe a degree in this could help me get a job in museum studies or as a researcher or something. The next two years passed quite nicely…and though my part-time bookstore job fell through because of crappy managers, I started to tutor a lot more (and my brother was in his last years of high school at this point, and needed my help getting through his classes) and I realised that I was actually pretty good at breaking down information and explaining it in different ways. Plus, I already had a lot of experience with learning difficulties due to my brother.
So, one year before I graduated, I get the bright idea to become a teacher. I had enough credits to switch majors, but the problem was, my university only offered Early Childhood Education…and while I dearly love little kids, more than five or six of them below the age of ten would probably drive me insane. I figured teenagers would be more mature.
(*pause* *waits for riotous laughter from Those Who Know Better*)
Anyhow, I had to apply to a whole new university program just to get into a high school teaching program. And that was the most miserable two years of my life, because teacher education is the most useless piece of trash degree you can take. You know when you learn? When they stick you in a school as a student teacher. I didn’t learn one thing from my second university degree except that sometimes the only way to move on to the next stage of your life is to sit through the boring shit and get a stupid piece of paper saying you sat through the boring shit.
And THEN…
I didn’t even get a job for another two years.
The thing people don’t tell you about university is that when you get out, there is almost no one hiring. The Baby Boomer generation is not retiring any time soon, the job market is flooded with so many newcomers that competition is fierce, and on top of that, your chances are reduces based on what field you go into. Science, Engineering, Computers, Medicine, Business and Law? Competition will be fierce, but you will definitely have a job at the end of your degree. Anything else? Unless you somehow become famous, every other job out there has a crappy percntage of hiring, and chances are you are going to have to get an average Joe job for a year or two before you actually get hired to do what you studied.
Me, I had one learning experience where I moved to England because there’s a huge demand for teachers (and learned why there’s a huge demand is because the school system there is complete shite), and then spent a year unemployed and basically acting as an unpaid domestic/caregiver because my mother was sick (I lived at home, though, so that’s why it worked out). I still tutored when I could, but I didn’t have as many clients as I had hoped for. Things were so bad at this point and I was so depressed I couldn’t even write…
I did finally get hired, but the way I did won’t make you feel better. I basically sent my resume to one of the schools where I did my field experience, telling them I was available for tutoring in the upcoming year. I got a call back (on my birthday) to see if I was interested in taking on an actual teaching job - they remembered me from my internship and remembered my brother (who once was a student there).
So I basically got the job because I knew someone.
And that’s the reality of it. You will not get a job (in certain fields, at least) unless you know someone. Networking and good interview skills are so important to getting hired these days, and your ability to be social (or fake being social) is key.
Even now, I’m not exactly secure in my job. As a teacher in the private sector, I don’t even have a contract. I literally spend every August sitting by the phone biting my nails hoping that they’re going to call me back for the year.
But it’s a foot in the door. You always have to think about it that way.
Contrast this to my brother - he finished high school, took a trade (auto mechanics), and had a job within a year. He now makes and will continue to make more in a year than what I will in two. He had his forever job at 19; I didn’t find mine until I was 27.
Now, if you’re still with me and I didn’t bore you with my life’s story, here’s the take away:
1. Pursue your passion. If you can make a living from it, you’re one of the lucky few. Keep doing you, and don’t let anyone tell you differently. Friends, family or loved ones, it doesn’t matter what they think.
2. If you can’t pursue your passion (full time, at least), do something that you don’t hate. Something that you are good at, a job where you can show up to and do your work happily and then go home at the end of the day and not stress about. Again, if anyone is telling you to do something you hate, DON’T. In five years, you’ll be burnt out, stressed and miserable. It is so not worth it. And if this is an Average Joe Job like working in a bookstore? Fine. Do that. It gives you more time to pursue your actual passions, and looks good on a resume.
3. Get a trade. Seriously, if you put off university for a year to get a trade, like real estate or mechanics or electrician or something, you not only give yourself the ability to be hired sooner, you can also support yourself throughout your academic career - and for those of you facing a future of student loans, this is so important!
4. If you pursue higher education, be prepared to change your mind A LOT before you graduate. You might find your are more interested or better at a certain subject that you thought, or a complete loss. There is nothing wrong with changing your major or minor until you find the right fit, just make sure you get all your General Education courses out of the way first so that you have that leeway.
5. After graduating, unless you’re in certain career fields, be prepared not to have a job right away. Get an Average Joe Job to keep you going, keep sending out CVs and going to interviews, and just hang in there - you will eventually get there, even if it takes you a little longer than your friends. And network! Make sure you keep in contact with people who might be able to help you in your career.
6. If you have the money and means, travel. Because chances are you won’t have the chance to do it once you join the rat-race.
7. MOST IMPORTANT: Do not let stress take over your life. You MUST find a way to balance your life while you worry about school/career stuff. Go out with your friends, travel when you can (even if it’s just a day trip to a museum!), write or paint or play music or build models or code or binge watch your tv show of choice, or whatever it is you do for fun - make sure you do it every day. Because your brain needs a way to unwind from the not so pleasant adulty stuff.
Anyhow, that’s the advice Twenty-Nine-Year-Old-Present-Me would give Nineteen-Year-Old-Me on the eve of starting university. I don’t know if she’d listen to all of it, but I wish someone had told me all that. Especially the parts about not getting a job right away. I thought I was a humongous failure because I couldn’t find work, when the reality was, I was just one of thousands of people seeking employment in an uncertain economic environment.
So, on that note, I hope that you managed to find some comfort or guidance in these words. Remember, you are not a disappointment and everyone moves at their own pace. Maybe you’re having a slow year and your siblings aren’t. Maybe next year you’ll be the one who has exciting new opportunities and they are stuck in a rut. Our lives are very static and you never know what’s coming around the next bend. Just keep on keeping on.
And personally? If I was struggling to love my college program? I would take a very good look at whether it was really for me.
Thanks for the ask :)

Morning Pages No. 62
Tuesday 25th August - 10:26pm
Yeah, I know these are just becoming later and later, and I know I’m going to have to do this whole thing again in around ten to twelve hours, but I honestly just needed to take a whole day today. I feel like that’s genuinely something I needed to do. And a lot has happened today! I don’t know if I want to talk about all of it, but I suppose I do feel full and happy enough to talk about...some. I spoke to Malith? I called him when I was on my walk with Lonzo after realising that I was feeling a bit lonely. And Malith was #1 on my list of 50 people who’ve helped shape me into the person that I am today. Out of all the people I could’ve thought of first, I thought of him. And that was in my head all day today, so around 4pm I decided to finally call him. And I expressed that the reason I hadn’t been able to call him before that was because I was getting too in my own head about allocating time to call Malith. I mean we usually speak on the phone for hours at a time, with three or so hour phone calls being a totally normal and regular occurrence when we were younger, and by younger I mean like two or so years ago? It’s perfectly natural for us to waste away hours on the phone, and for our phone calls to include multiple toilet trips. Phone in hand. I felt like if I was always multitasking, then I’d have no time for a phone call. But on my walk today, I realised that I’d rather speak to him for twenty minutes a day rather than not speak to him at all for months just because I never had four spare hours at a time. Which reminds me, I also told the boy that I’d actually read ‘Fleabag’, so I have to do that right after finishing these pages. Yowza. I kind of fucked myself over here, didn’t I? The amount of crap I need to do is seemingly large almost always usually because I allow myself to have days like this, where I get absolutely nothing done. Well, actually it’s not entirely my fault. I had uni this morning, and so that meant a 9am start AT THE LATEST. I actually woke up at around 7am, closer to 7:30am but not close enough that it was an alarm that had woken me up. The sun woke me up, because it comes out earlier now. And I love that. Summer’s on its way in, but I still have a gross winter body and it’s still weirdly raining a lot, so I want to rectify the gross winter body, but it’s a little difficult in this abhorrent torrential August rain.
I’ve just realised I haven’t had a single paragraph break for this whole page, so I’ve decided to put one right here. We learnt about ‘chunking’ in Writing & Editing for Digital Media this week, and the inverted pyramid model that’s used for writing content meant for digital platforms. I felt pretty confident in my ability to ‘chunk’ effectively, that is to construct my content in defined and digestible chunks so that it’s not just one wall of text, and our audience is more likely to both find the information they came for, and also better engage with our content in general. I’m really enjoying this class, and I’m also really enjoying ONLY TAKING ONE CLASS! After this class, I’ll only have one more left, and then the internship. Which is exciting. If I’ll ever be able to actually do an internship. COVID-19 has screwed up my hopes of finding full-time employment by February 2021, and calling my 24th year on this earth the first official year of my professional career. It seems as though there’ll still be some time before I properly enter my industry. But I am enjoying doing whatever I can with whatever is available to me right now. I mean maybe I could go on to get my PhD at unimelb. Maybe not at unimelb? But honestly where else would I go? I have no other connections to any other institutes, but one could also say that I have no connections at unimelb either. I just owe them a lot of money. And also $282, or I believe that is the amount. I don’t want to think about that bullshit right now though.
Evan just coughed in the other room. I’m not sure what he’s doing, but I love him. I don’t know why, I just wanted to write that.
Sarah posted in the 21 Days group that today’s challenge was to call up one person from our list of 50 people and just touch base with them. Funnily enough, when I read the challenge I was already on the phone to Malith. I called him after realising that if he was the first person on my list, that would mean that I’ve been thinking about him quite a bit, and took that as a sign that I should definitely call him. It felt pretty nice to have preemptively completed the challenge, without even knowing that I was PREEMPTIVELY completing the challenge?! ‘Preemptive’ is such a weird word. I misspelt it when I was typing it out in caps. The ‘p’ being between the ‘m’ and the ‘t’ threw me off completely. It just felt wrong to type those letters in that order.
Anyway, Sarah also spoke about her friend Joshua in the post, and I didn’t know how to express my condolences. I just sent her a message. I feel my mind straying from these pages. I don’t think I want to deal with anything too complicated right now, which is why I’m skirting the issue. Sometimes, I worry that if I don’t speak about my friends and what’s going on in their lives, I’ll just repeat the same basic stuff that I seem to concern myself with for the majority of my time, or over the bulk of my day. I don’t know. I need to read ‘Fleabag’, and I’m worrying that I’m not making sense. I doubt that these pages will provide me with any insight today. I honestly just feel like I’m ticking boxes at this point, and I’m a little bit annoyed about that feeling, but I’m also accepting it as part of the pages. Oh what zen. I am a revolutionary mindful practitioner, a beautiful and empty-headed queen of calm. I don’t fucking know. It’s 10:56pm, it seems ludicrous to still refer to this as a morning pages entry. LOOK. I consider it to be a colossal win that I’m writing anything at all today.
I texted Julie and organised to visit her again next Wednesday so we can spend a bit more time looking at all the stuff I’ve done on Squarespace so far. It’s not bad, what I’ve done so far. Like it’s really not bad. I’m proud of where the site’s at, with perhaps a small exception to the colour scheme and the fonts. I have to sort that out. I’m not entirely sure how to add our own font packs to Squarespace’s site builder. I hope they allow for that? Because the font pack that they do have is INCREDIBLY limited. I’ve stopped using italics in these pages because I’ve realised that when I copy/paste the text from this morning pages doc into tumblr, tumblr gets rid of all my italicised text and just turns them into normal letters again. Lonzo just had a dream where he was running and his legs were moving, but he’s lying behind me under the blanket and so his little scratchy paws were moving up and down on my butt and it felt like the largest, weirdest, most inefficient spider bite I was ever receiving.
There are now TWO spiders on the window sill above the kitchen sink now, and the newer one is smaller but still BIG for a house spider, and it’s suspended in the centre of a web that’s been prominently constructed right above the kitchen sink and in the centre of the bottom section of the window. So basically this spider is like eye-level with me when I go to do the dishes. But the problem is, is that this smaller spider looks eerily like a crab, its legs are at weird angles, and I legitimately think it’s dead? AH. I hate this so much. I’m trying not to think about it, but goddamn it’s on my mind and now I’ve described it in great detail. That horrid spider will be in these morning pages for the rest of eternity, and someday future Rue is going to read this description and hate past Rue for it...present Rue? Rue that is Rue right now, sitting here typing against her will but also for her own good.
I’m weirdly enjoying it that whenever I answer the phone at work and an older man is the one who’s calling, they say ‘like a French street’ when I tell them my name. Haha! Sometimes I’ve responded with ‘or like searing regret’ or something along those lines. And if they appreciate wit, they tend to laugh. This one time, I told a middle-aged couple about my idea for a useless superhero (‘Superfluous’), and the dad (because he was a dad and she was a mum and they were in the shop buying a phone for their daughter, if I remember correctly) CACKLED. I have a love-hate relationship with brackets. I think they’re lazy and I would never use them in anything I write and put my name to, but I’ve always used them avidly in journal entries and personal stuff like these pages. I figure nobody’s going to judge me for having horrid grammar and some shoddy structure in something that they shouldn’t be reading anyway.
I do enjoy writing though. Always have. No surprises there. But sometimes it is hard. It feels like a part of me that I feel I need to disconnect from myself in order to survive, and yet at the same time, it is my life. I don’t want to do anything else but this, I say that a lot. But then sometimes I am SO fearful that I’ve forgotten or I’m on the way to forgetting how to do this. It’s been literal years since I last wrote long-form fiction, and I feel like all the stuff I’ve written recently isn’t even that good. But was my stuff as a teenager any good too? Mr. D.B. Kuruppu said that it was. And I owe it to him to try harder. But I owe it to myself too. I have good ideas, or at least teenage Rue had good ideas, and those ideas deserve to be fleshed out and done justice.
Nicky’s just crawled into my lap. He almost crawled all over my keyboard but I stopped him. He almost did it again. Now he’s licking his back leg but actually I can hear and feel his scratchy tongue trying to lick up my yellow ‘KINDNESS ONLY’ hoodie. I love this hoodie. I never thought I’d ever spend so much money on a HOODIE, but I am glad that I did. Wearing this makes me feel happy, and I know that it makes other people feel happy too, which is everything that matters. Positivity. The colour ‘yellow’ is one of the most beautiful colours in the world, but the best thing about it by far is the fact that it reminds me of my mum. That’s a beautiful sentence. I miss my family. I want to see Sandy at LEAST. Maybe I should call her tomorrow and see if she’d be keen to take the dogs out. I also have to do a bit more work on the website tomorrow, but for now I suppose I should just read ‘Fleabag’ and maybe a bit of ‘Dominicana’ if I can stomach it. And by ‘stomach it’, I mean if I can physically deal with lying on my stomach after my very modest dinner of hummus and crackers.

I've seen quotes from Progressive, Geico, The General and Safe Auto. So far, geico has been considerably the lowest. I checked various models I was looking at, on average progressive was about $100/mo, the General and Safe Auto were around $120 and geico I saw the lowest as $45/mo ranging up to $80/mo (but I've already eliminated that car- a ford probe that sold before I could test drive) I'm wondering if anyone knows of any other major companies with lower rates, otherwise I'm obviously going with geico. Right now my options are down to a mitsu eclipse or a camry/corrolla/accord (something of that nature, whatevers on the lot and priced right) The eclipse from geico I believe was around 60-70, I imagine the camry would be more in the 45-50 range. Can a car insurance company make up points on your license?
So in early march my apartment was raided for pot, and a 1/2 gram was found. I was convicted of possession of marijuana and as part of Michigan's driving laws even if the incident did not occur in a car your license is restricted for 6 months. Yesterday my mother (the insurance for the whole family is in her name) received a notice that i had 8 points on my license and my insurance rates would be raised. Confused about this i went to Sec of State and in fact found out that i have no points. I called Memic and explained this to them, they informed me that they do not use actual points, they use their system of points. For example OUID is a 6 point offense but they count it as 8 points. Passing a stopped school bus (which as far as i can tell is no points) they view as 8 points. My question is, can they do this? We are switching insurances next month due to cheaper rates but this seems like a shady business practice to me. Thanks for ur time!!! -Pat""

What kind of car insurance for a adapted van?
Ok I have a 1993 Dodge Caravan. I am disabled so it has a ramp that is let out and brought back in. It has disabled hand controls and a drivers seat that raises and lowers and turns around.. just a bit more than your average seat does now-a-days.. this van was adapted when it was made.. so i have no receipts on the modifications or anything.. i could get an estimate from a local store that deals in strictly handicapped equipment.. how do i properly insure this van? I need to make sure that if it is ever totaled that i dont get just blue book. since i have to have a adapted van (i live in a rural area and there is no dependable handicapped public transportation) i have the permanent general insurance now, with a $1000 on the custom equipment. but i worry thats not enough or maybe even doesnt cover my handicap adaptions. the agent with them was snappy, rude, and didnt know anything.. ugh! what company should i go to? what do i need to have in my policy? help! i keep getting all this bad advice from the insurance companies because no one knows what to do!!!""

Is my insurance company liable?
My insurance company offered me a policy to cover a de restricted scooter which I agreed to take out, but in order for this policy to take effect I had to give up 4 months of cover totalling around 160 and pay a 80 deposit on the new policy. Last week I was sent a letter notifying me that my insurance was cancelled so I called them and was told that I had to return a copy of my CBT certificate. I rang on Sunday and was told a completely different story and that was that the company they placed me with had decided that they were not going to cover me even though the whole point of changing them was because they specificity dealt with my type of vehicle . They have now offered another policy for 515 pounds with is 100 pounds more than my previous and I am not willing to pay this as they lied to me and told me that I was insured to ride around even though they knew that I was not covered. I have copies of the insurance certificate to prove that they sold me the policy and all other relating documents. Please advise on what I can do.""

Where can I find info on LOW COST Medical Insurance In Central NY? (Student Artist Musician Business Owner)?
My wife and I are moving soon from PHX, AZ to the greater Syracuse area. I am moving my multimedia business / record label (websites, print design, videography, DVD production and studio recording) and I need information on which companies can provide my family reasonable cost heath insurance. How much would the treatment cost for stage 3 non-hodgkin's lymphoma if you didn't have insurance?
My friend put a friend of hers who was just diagnosed with stage 3 Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma in touch with me today, but I really don't know how to help her. She's 21, fresh out of college but unemployed, and does not have insurance. I don't know why she wasn't still on her parents' plan, or how student healthcare insurance works. She's terrified not just about the diagnosis itself but the cost. She was already financially strapped and trying to figure out how to pay for housing after college. I had Hodgkin's Lymphoma at 16-17, but my parents have insurance, and they are the ones who handled the bills. I never paid for anything myself so I really don't know about the cost involved. I saw one bill for my radiation and was literally shocked-still by the amount. It was like $1500 for each treatment I think, and I was getting them Monday-Friday then. Chemo was much more, but I never saw a bill for it so I really don't know the price. I did see a bill for one night I spent in the emergency room when I had this awful infection and a terrible fever, and without insurance that one night would have been over $7000! With insurance I think it was like $2400. All of my treatments and doctor's offices are in posh medical facilities in affluent parts of Los Angeles like Beverly Hills and Westwood / Bel Air, so perhaps that's why my medical care was so much. I honestly don't know. I wish I knew how to support or advise this girl. She's too old to attend the support group I went to, and I don't really know that much about NH-L because it's quite different than HL. I was fortunate to never have to be concerned about the finances, and I don't even know what the total amounted to since my parents won't tell me. They said, that it's not my concern. It was all medical care for me, so you'd think it would be my concern, but whatever. Will her oncologist's office help her to find financial support? How does that even work? What do they do if you can't pay? It would suck if she had to file bankruptcy this early in her life. Won't that keep her from getting a job, a loan for a house, and everything else? She went to USC. Can recent alumni be treated at their hospital for a reduced price? I was treated at UCLA, and I think at UCLA students can get medical care at a reduced cost. At my school I think we can as well. I don't know. You just show your student card. All bills are sent to your parents, so I don't know how it works. What should I tell her? She wants my help. All I really know to do is to send her the links I have on my profile. I can give her emotional support, but am clueless about financial support. What's the total cost of this going to most likely be for her?""

Window Display
We are now getting closer and closer to the window display deadline and so on Monday (16th April) we had organised as a group to meet up after class to discuss how we are going to work towards finishing the window and resolve any issues that we have. It was important that we met on that day because Fiona would be leaving for the Copenhagen trip that evening and we had to hand in the final Learning Agreement at 4pm and this needed to be fully up to date with what we would be doing. However, on the day it was only me and Fiona who decided to turn up and since we had to make these decisions we had to work without the other two members of the group. We tried to consult them via the Facebook group chat but they where very slow in replying so unfortunately they had minimal input on the development of the project.
We had two major issues to resolves; the lack of group work within the window display and the level of communication between us and the viewer of the display. To make sure that the general public are going to be able to understand the display we decided that the best thing to do would be gain feedback from them ourselves. To do this we will be printing a detailed example of our current window display plan and showing it to people who walk past the Guntons space gallery. We will be asking this about if they they can understand the layout concept and exhibits. This will be a great way to get feedback from out actual market.
Secondly we have decided that instead of having one person work on each of the 4 exhibit areas we will be changing the concept so that we add an extra area, Design, to communicate the story of a garment better, and have 2 people collaborate on each section to have a better quality of work. This will allow more collaboration and a better example to the public of how different designers will use methods differently. This means that now Fiona and Sophie are curating Design, Myself and Sophie are curating pattern cutting, Myself and Shayla are curating Construction and Fiona and Shayla are Curating Textiles. Promotion will now be split between all 4 members of the group by dialysing an example of each of our work.
On Wednesday I was finally able to meet up with the other two members of our group and explain the decisions that me and Fiona had had to make. They where both very happy snd on board with the changes that we had made and we then planned to continue working together throughout the week to finalise what we can without Fiona. I will be focusing on creating the pattern cutting display with Sophie will will involve examples of drafting patterns on the stand. I will also be creating some pocket samples inspired by my tailoring project to go with Shayla’s pocket samples for Construction.
However, even though we agreed to meet up in uni for the rest of the week and work together when I came in on Thursday neither of the the other two turned up. Thus I worked on creating patterns for my pocket samples but could not continue with anything else without them. Holding up the project yet again.
On Friday when Sophie was in the studio we decided to go out and obtain some first hand market research. We spoke to people who where sitting and walking past the Guntons space walkway. W showed them the current set up for out window display and asked for their opinions on the display and how they felt that we could improve it. In general we largely received very good feedback about the display, the only issue was that the felt we should have the layout going clockwise rather than anti clockwise to make it easier to understand. We had considered that this may be an issue but where unsure how much it mattered. Having this feedback from our market was vital to our decision making on the matter. Because there was no way to suspend the 1/2 mannequin with such a shot amount of time left we decided to change the order of the step to allow the mannequin to still be placed on a plinths. So the order would now be 1) Design, 2) textiles, 3) pattern cutting and 4) construction rather than 1) design, 2) pattern cutting, 3) textiles, 4) construction which in my opinion makes a lot more sense anyway.

Portfolio
Although I had been working hard on my portfolio over the easter break I felt that I was struggling to finish it and needed feedback. Thus the session with Ike on Tuesday was extremely helpful for this. I got some very good feedback and came to some very useful conclusions about how I was working. I realised that I didn’t want to work by creating a mood board, colour board, development board etc. Instead I want the mood, colour, concept, development etc to be apparent throughout the project whilst still telling the story of development. This is something which I am going to be working on very hard in my free time up to hand in as it is very important for me to A) have a portfolio which I can send out for the use of potential internships and B) I want to have made a professional portfolio which I am proud of before producing my third year portfolio which will be very important for my post my BA.
Dissertation
During the Easter break I had worked very hard on researching my chosen topic for the Dissertation. I wanted to write about sustainable fashion and Vivienne Westwood’s “Buy less, choose well and make it last” campaign. However when we came back to class after the break I had not written a draft because I felt unsure about the topic. During the session on Monday Laura mentioned that we should ask ourselves what we will achieve out of doing the dissertation. I instantly realised that I would not really be interested in the results or what I would learn out of this topic as much as I would other things. The only logical thing was to think about what I would like to learn and what would be useful to me as a designer.
My mind instantly took me to my Creative Cut project from first year where a took a lot of inspiration from traditional Japanese pattern cutting. Japanese culture has always been a large part of my life as a designer and I am always looking to the country for inspiration. Regardless of how strong this may come out in my work it is something which I feel I will defiantly benefit from exploring as a part of my third year. Thus I decided to do some research and think about how I could phrase the question.
I am currently settled on ‘Analyse critical elements of Japanese fashion and evaluate it’s influence upon western designers.’ I chose this question because I think that it is important to acknowledge my personal point of view on the topic. I will be analysing it from a western designers point of view and so it will be useful for me to see how other people have taken inspiration as well as research into other things which I can use. However, I would really like the opportunity to discuss this question with a tutor before I hand in the proposal as second opinions are always worth getting. Hopefully this is feedback which I will gain after handing in the draft next week. Before then I will continue to complete a well written draft and find as many possible critical sources of research available to me.
The main focus over the next week will be to complete the window display work and begin the tartan project whilst simultaneously working on the portfolio. I will need to make sure I manage my time well and work to a high standard in order to meet the deadline. It will also be a case of making sure that the rest of my group members work to do this as well which may be the harder struggle.
