Potential elements of a coming-of-age arc:
Identity: Learning who you are outside of the family structure
Responsibility: Taking care of other people instead of being taken care of; making your own choices and taking the consequences upon yourself
Values: Deciding which values you will live your life by--holding onto the values of childhood or taking up new values--and using these to inform your adult decisions
Wisdom: Overcoming a childish misconception of reality and coming to a more realistic understanding of how the world works, so you can use this new knowledge to inform your decisions
#adventures in writing#thoughts expanded after considering how under my original definition#northanger abbey is definitely henry's coming-of-age story but not necessarily catherine's#because she doesn't take care of anyone#however she does take responsibility for her actions#takes ownership of her childhood values#and grows in wisdom#i'm not sure you need all of these#i think responsibility has to do with love#caring about someone besides yourself#and if that's the case then responsibility is necessary in a heroic coming-of-age arc#which is why a villain is so useful#because you see what it's like when someone doesn't care about others

vampire bats share mouthfuls of blood to other bats they’re close to if they weren’t able to feed and now i need old vampire!ghost sharing a bloody kiss with fledgling!soap, giving him mouthfuls of blood bc his fresh fangs are too sensitive to bite with
it’s been so long since he was turned that ghost’s forgotten the deep ache that comes with growing fangs and he almost worries when johnny goes to bite into the meal he’s brought him only to whimper and pull back; only the slightest pinpricks of a bite left in the man’s neck, barely enough to bring blood to the surface
it’s only when johnny whines and massages at his gums that ghost realises his oversight; crooning at his sweet mate in reassurance. he’s not upset that he couldn’t feed, at the unintentional rejection of his offering. he’ll make the pain stop
ghost pulls the man to his mouth and sinks in his fangs, sucking in a heavy mouthful and drops the now paralysed prey back to his feet; his throat steadily gushing with blood and spilling over his body
he cups johnny’s face, looking into his eyes, teary with pain and hunger, and purses his lips to carefully drip the blood into his mouth. the pain immediately vanishes from his eyes, replaced with pure bliss as he opens his mouth wide; curling his tongue to catch every drop. ghost presses his mouth to his in a hungry, blood-filled kiss; tongues twining together as they share the taste
johnny sucks the last of it from his lips and ghost guides him down to lap at the prey’s neck; licking up the blood he was too weak to draw himself. he’s ravenous with it, his whole face covered in red as he licks up the spill and suckles at ghost’s bite
ghost’s filled with an overwhelming pride at having provided for his mate in an even deeper way than just hunting for him. he spilled the blood johnny’s drinking; fed him in the most intimate way their kind knows and he’ll do it a hundred times over for his love
#pet peeve time i hate the vampire ‘licks a bite to stop it bleeding’ trope bc it biologically doesn’t make sense#if anything a vampire’s saliva would have an anticoagulant effect to /stop/ a bit from clotting so they can drink more#anyway back to bloody kisses lmao#thinking about the actual biological difference between humans and vampires and how much it would /hurt/ to grow a pair of fangs#like the human mouth isnt meant to have teeth that big or muscles strong enough to to support them#or the increased bite force they need#so not only are they growing new teeth theyre also growing bigger muscles and their mouths are having to adapt to them#that would cause so much pain#you ever grown in a wisdom tooth? it sucks and that nowhere near this level#on top of all that youre also starving and have an unquenchable need to feed#the intimacy of a sire feeding their fledgling from their own mouths#weaning them off their blood but still so dependent on them#and even after johnny can bite and feed on his own he still craves the closeness of being fed from ghosts mouth#and ghost never denies him#coming out of my cage and ive been doing just fine.txt#we’re a team- ghost team#soapghost#ghostsoap#ghoap#simon ghost riley#ghost cod#john soap mactavish#soap cod

Yeah Venom of the Red Lotus showed us how crazy powerful Korra is but The Last Stand had Korra transform the destructive power of a massive bomb blast into something regenerative in the culmination of one of the best character arcs I've ever seen. In my OPINION!!
#SORRY ok i'll stop.#lies. i have more to say. she is so brave and so selfless!!!#and mako sacrificing himself to destroy the weapon's energy source was really powerful too#AND of course. the korrasami of it all.#ok one more thing. it seems like the most common interpretation of korra's conversation w/tenzin in the last stand#is 'suffering makes you a better person' and people rightfully get pissed off about that#but i just....fundamentally disagree with that reading. i saw it as korra choosing to find meaning in her pain#and choosing to find wisdom in it. and i think that's really fucking powerful and why korra's arc resonates so deeply with so many people.#like. the suffering happened. she can't go back in time and undo it. and she didn't deserve it!!#but the only way to move forward was to accept that it happened and let it empower her rather than drown her.#i mean there are things i've been through that i wish hadn't happened#but the idea that those things don't necessarily have to mean i've changed for the worse#that i can choose to find A Point to it all and grow from it and use the pain rather than the pain using me#is actually really empowering.#tlok

Cyclops Are Valuable and Highly Skilled Workers in PJO, Not Mistakes.
Something I find really interesting (read: annoying) is how Annabeth says that "Cyclops are mistakes," and then nearly everything we hear of cyclops in every book/series says differently?
Of course there's outliers like Polyphemus and the cyclops Annabeth stabbed as a 6-7 year old but those are the exceptions. The majority of cyclops that are mentioned/seen aren't like that.
In tlt, Chiron says that Zeus thinks Poseidon stole his lightning bolt so Poseidon could have his cyclops study and make copies of it. Which means that his cyclops are highly competent weaponsmiths.
In SoM, Tyson works with Beckendorf and the Hephaestus kids and learns how to make magical objects. By the end of the book, Tyson makes a magical shield for Percy, which reveals so many of his talents: 1. Tyson is an artist (the shield was covered in scenes of their adventures from that summer), 2. Tyson went from fumbling with small objects to making an intricate shield in the space of 2 months. Which means that Tyson (and possibly all cyclops) have the ability to learn/pick up on skills very quickly with high degrees of proficiency. 3. Not to mention all the work that went into the mechanics of making the watch and the shield.
In SoM, Tyson was able to tell that Clarisse's warship's engine was failing, and was able to fix it, long enough for it to hold together for a few more minutes. And this was with little to no education in ship engines. So just as Percy has instinctive power over old fashioned wooden ships, Tyson has power over modern engineered ship engines.
In tlo, Poseidon's army of cyclops fought alongside him and the other Olympians against Typhon, demonstrating that not only are they decent warriors/soldiers but they are literally the best. They're good enough to fight alongside Olympian gods, including Zeus.
In tlo, Zeus makes Tyson a general of Olympus's armies. So 1. Cyclops can hold positions of authority not only in Poseidon's kingdom but also Zeus's. And 2. Olympus also has an army of cyclops (I'm assuming that Tyson is a general over an army of cyclops and not an army of lesser immortals/nymphs/satyrs/minor gods).
In tlo, Tyson and his cyclops friends are the ones building most of the minor gods cabins. Which shows that they're construction workers and civil engineers. Possibly architects too - aside from Nico's cabin it's unclear who designed the other cabins.
In HoO, Gaea has an army of cyclops, one that marched towards camp jupiter. Idk if they're Poseidon's cyclops - and I highly doubt they are because the gods including Poseidon were against Gaea, and most of Poseidon's cyclops live with him in Atlantis - and also because according to Greek myths Gaea and Ouranus also had a few cyclops kids. Gaea was using her own cyclops kids here. Either way, the fact that they're part of an army, one that responded to their mother/grand-mother etc. call shows that they're competent soldiers, at the very least.
In Cotg, Percy sees many cyclops building Poseidon's summer villa. So their abilities include construction and civil engineering as well.
So in conclusion, cyclops are hella talented. They're highly proficient in weapon making, magical weapons making, they have unnaturally good ability to pick up on new skills, they're elite fighters, hold positions of authority in multiple kingdoms, construction workers and civil engineers.
They're literally trades people? And in our society, tradesmen (and women) literally hold our houses together? They're essential workers. You wouldn't have a house, or plumbing or electrical systems or a furnace or AC without tradesmen. Idk if it's the same in PJO because Rick doesn't get into that level of worldbuilding. Anyways.
You wanna call them "mistakes" again, Annabeth? Or say "eww" when Tyson tries to say hi to you?

How can I be confident with aging as a woman?
By internalizing that, with every week, month, and year, we're learning more about ourselves, the world, and what we desire from the internal/external aspects of it. With age, hopefully, comes wisdom from experience, self-reflection, and acquired competence.
Every year allows you to learn from your mistakes, become more secure within your (authentic) self, and apply this knowledge to help you live more intentionally/work towards creating + living your dreams.
