Retrospectively, watching as Starscream so callously slew Cliffjumper at first confrontation but seeing him capture Wheeljack for information he doesn’t even know (yet), the opening to Transformers Prime really does not make sense. So for today’s rambling- it’s Cliffjumper’s turn for backstory and rewrite for Altered Loyalties.
Before I get to the introduction to Cliffjumper and the subsequent rewrite of TFP’s openning, let me get into some backstory context for Mr Jumper. Of the two appearances that Cliff shows up in Prime, he begins the episode as a captive of the Decepticon forces, and specifically under Starscream, once again in both instances. Either he has the worse track record for getting captured or...
That’s somewhat what he does as his little job.
Vaguely inspired by the Cybertronian rank emblems - and also not rooted in any such knowledge of actual strategy - Cliffjumper’s currently 2 for 2 capture rate, I’d like to think that Cliff is a rather unorthodox Recon Specialist who gets himself captured on purpose to help break out ‘Bots held prisoner. Of course, not every Decepticon Commander is going to be so ‘merciful’ in capturing fallen Autobots as still alive POWs, but that’s what the Intelligence Division is there for and, excluding the very first episode of Prime, Starscream seems to be rather notable in keeping living ‘Bots for intelligence of his own.
And this, were it not obviously building up to something, is how Cliffjumper and Arcee meet on the field side-by-side. Arcee - in some way - managed to fall in battle against a division of the ‘Cons lead directly by Starscream, and Screamer - ever the witting mech - understands the significance of her position and deems it a priority to keep her alive for information extraction. It worked once before, after all, even if Arcee simply did not know the information being asked of her.
Not one to lose a significant member of the Autobots however, Intelligence points to Cliffjumper to go again and go crazy, go stupid, and get himself captured whilst feigning defeat in the same blow. Though specifically working in espionage (even if it seems to be only a ‘Con rank, which seems kinda really biased - that alongside the Autobot special forces versus Decepticon black ops) Cliff is a field worker and can easily be mistaken as a simple scout something something ‘i was thinking about going red but then i’d be mistaken for cliffjumper’ quoth cyberverse bumblebee.
With another Autobot in his capture, Starscream finds that Arcee may very well have some... motivation to talk after all, if any advice from Airachnid was recorded and reached his audials.
Everything that happened in ‘Out of the Past’ happened mostly the same, even if Cliff had a bit more incite (going in a little more prepared) and Arcee having known a little bit more about the uh... promises that were going to come as a prisoner. Kaon laboratories, Shockwave and the Cortical Psychic Patch, some regular old wartime deception in faking one’s own death. The only major difference would be the predisposed knowledge that the ‘Cons already had about the presence of Autobots on Earth, no thanks to the helpful information of Skyquake’s guardian team having already been on Earth for a hot while.
Then, of course, there was the space bridge and it’s following explosion.
It goes - to Cliff at least - just as well as expected, for the most part. Finding himself on Earth with an extracted Arcee was not completely expected, and in doing do being separated by the stars from the small Intelligence team he traveled with. Arcee too wasn’t entirely hoping to find herself on the planet she was essentially informing ‘Bots not already there to head to, but the wonderful bonus to having seen a very helpful transmission from Earth ‘Con to ‘Con, the duo of ‘Bots have at least some information of their own.
In the time it takes for them to rendezvous with Team Prime, inform the Earth stationed Autobots of the ‘assumed’ death of Shockwave, the destruction of the space bridge the Decepticons were going to use to transport their forces to Earth, and the location (or at least the transmission frequency of the preestablished ‘Con Comms Tower), the remainder of Cliffjumper’s team are still on Cybertron. Intelligence ‘Bots gotta Intelligence, but without their main recon guy, they take brief (or even rotational) residence on the currently dead dirt that is their home planet.
Essentially, that Intelligence team finds out that Shockers was - shocker - not dead from the sudden explosion that popped somewhere in Kaon, and get to scout out and keep an audial out for his newest ‘pet’ project, heheheh.
That brings us up to the first episode of TFP, where Cliff now kneels, battered and bruised, before the Decepticon commander he successfully japed 6-ish Earth years ago.
Starscream, though thoroughly unimpressed, annoyed and very eager to put Cliffjumper in his place for marring his not-as-effective-as-he-wants-it record to something more equivalent of how-in-primus’-name-did-you-fuck-THIS-up-so-bad mission status, does manage to restrain himself from gutting Cliff where he lay. Instead, our local espionage expert Cliff got himself in this mess rather unexpectedly and has found himself not needing to feign being caught for a loop.
“Scream, it’s been a while. So, where’s your master?”
The silver Seeker looked down at the mech that eluded him not quite so long ago, optics narrowing to a glowing red seam.
“Nevermind him,” Starscream growled, irritation burning his wires. “I am my OWN master!”
Bright blue energon stained his claws as they raked across the faceplate of the dirt covered muscle car, the mirth in his captive’s tongue muffled under the sting of pain and the extra layer of hurt against his helm, the gasp wringing out in the cold otherwise silent Nemesis.
“That-” he hissed through clenched dentae, anger rippling to a still, “Was for slipping from my grasp.”
“Now, send him to a cell.” Screamer turned to face the bridge once more, neon claws flexing as he crossed his arms behind his back. “Make sure he won’t expire too soon.”
“We still have much to discuss.”
And so, by proxy of having been on Earth for a hot while, having Starscream go through the trouble of setting up a rather heavy handed trap and just having a personal vendetta to sweeten the treatment, Cliffjumper holds a lot more valuable information in a significantly more beaten up body. However, if one as watched any longer than the first episode of TFP, Megan certainly comes back real quick with a little treat much sweeter, where a very easy chance to kill of Cliff a little later than the show (but still earlier than I am trying to aim for) comes about with the presence of dark energon.
How do I deal with this?
...
Let me sleep on this and leave you with some background to Cliffjumper and also- if you watch the first episode of a series with ‘and that was [revenge] for [x]’ or whatever, I just think that that’d be cool.
