Lup's terms of endearment

Lup is a character that it takes a lot of practice for me to write, but there's a particular calling card for Lup that jumps out both from her canon dialogue and from fanon, right? We all know it: Lup absolutely loves to call people "babe".
But... when I'm writing her, I also end up wondering if I'm overusing any given signature vocative, or other element of her speech. After all, fanfic writers, myself very much included, are always looking for quick effective ways to make characters sound like themselves — and in a case of a character like Lup, peppering in a "babe" often seems to work like a charm in terms of making her more Lup-like, especially if you're writing Blupjeans.
The thing about this vocative-centric, vocabulary-centric approach to character voice is that it can, at least theoretically, lead to us overdoing it, and overshooting how the amount that Lup would use "babe" in canon. Which isn't a big deal, it's just fic — but I'm very hyperfixated and I love Lup very much, so I wanted to break down a some of when, where, and why she uses "babe" and other terms of endearment, as well as other little nuances I noticed.
Continuing under the cut, but the tl;dr is: Lup absolutely calls people "babe" a lot, but it's not exclusively romantic, it can be either sincere or teasing in tone, and she tends to do so more as time goes on, not so much at the start of the century.

The first thing that jumps out at me is how back-loaded, for lack of a better term, the use of "babe" is among all Lup's appearances. It's part of one of her most iconic lines from Story and Song, but she doesn't drop a single "babe" throughout the whole The Stolen Century! Go up and read those lines again — pre-Story and Song, there's not a single one!
I have a few conjectures here that might explain this. First, on a Doyalist level, one could attribute this to small sample size (Lup just doesn't have that much dialogue relative to her thematic presence), and/or to Griffin himself still feeling out her character in the first few episodes that she appeared in.
But on a Watsonian level: I'm purely speculating, but I wonder if it was a nickname she that first started using (or at least, using with regularity) for Barry at some point well into the establishment of their relationship, and from there, it bled out into platonic contexts too. Speaking of which, the fact that she predominantly uses it for Barry doesn't stop her from using it for Taako — in fact, though it only comes up once, it's in a very sincere moment of encouragement (as Taako struggles to transmute all of Phandalin into sapphire).
On that note, if there's anything I'll personally admit to wanting to see more of in fic, it's more of Lup using "babe" in platonic/familial contexts! It's hard to extrapolate from canon if this is a "just Taako" thing, an "any close platonic bond" thing, or an "anyone whatsoever" thing, but I just think it's so cute! (And I'd personally vibe check it as realistic for her to say to other IPRE crewmates, for example — but I'm possibly biased, as a Lup and Magnus friendship writer/enjoyer.)
Lastly on the topic of "babe," it comes up in a variety of contexts, but as alluded to above, it can be sincere or teasing — of which the teasing can, but doesn't necessarily, overlap with flirting.
Specifically, Lup uses "babe" twice while gently, lightheartedly questioning Barry's decisions or priorities, like his intent to blow himself up. It also comes up in teasing or flirtatious moments within emotionally charged moments, like the reunion, or when she gets her body back. It's just not exclusively used for deflating tension — see her sheer confidence in the "we're legends" line and how she revels in it, for example.
All in all, "babe" is clearly one of Lup's go-to all-purpose words, and I like that it shows her voice evolving over time, whether or not that was intentional by Griffin. "Babe" is by far the most worth analyzing of Lup's terms of endearment, but we'll also talk about:
"Dear"

With the obligatory caveat that we have an even smaller sample size here, it jumps out at me that Lup only ever uses "dear" in teasing contexts, reacting to mistakes both big and small. But it's also a word she uses to emphasize love and forgiveness — especially communicating that she won't breeze past a mistake like it didn't happen, but also isn't going to maintain hostility over it, which we see with Lucretia.
(You can even make an argument that Lup teasing Taako with a "dear" is at least a little tension-defusing too, because that scene happens in the leadup to Lup and Barry presenting the Relic plan. But it's less clear there if she's using it consciously with that purpose.)

Lup: So, uh, Davenport, bud, kinda curious why you’d, uh, decided to come back out here after you wrote us about all the ghost-based dangers you encountered, my man, didn’t you consider that we’d be coming to collect for, you know, the goddess of death?

Now, a few more odds and ends for the sake of completeness! The first thing I noticed is that she calls Barry "honey" while teasing him a little bit, as they compare their favorite cycles (though I don't think she's necessarily lying, either) — overall very similar to how she uses "babe" in playful contexts sometimes, or how she uses "dear" with Taako or Lucretia.
"Bud" is for Taako, Magnus, and Davenport! Like "babe," it seems to be a very multi-purpose vocative — ranging from questioning her friends' judgment, all the way to deeply sincere moments. (Taako seems to bring out the sincerity more than anyone, unsurprisingly.)
Lastly, "Man" is used both as a general filler word/emphasizing word without necessarily filling in for a name or subject, or alternatively, transforms into "my man" exactly once when talking to Davenport. That one's interesting to me because "my man" is something associated a lot more with Taako — and specifically, used by Taako with people he likes and trusts (link), though it may or may not actually be a serious context.
Merle (giving Taako some shitty kelp shoes):  There’s a lot of give in kelp and if they’re too small, get ‘em wet and they’ll get bigger and these— These are for you. Taako (pretending he won't immediately cast Levitate on them): Oh, well, thank you, my man. These are just beautiful!

To compare and contrast, Lup's only known "my man" is deployed against Davenport when she's kind of questioning his judgment, but he's obviously a person she likes. If you'll let me speculate, I wouldn't be shocked if Lup overheard Taako hit Davenport with plenty of "my man"-s over the course of the Stolen Century — just a guess, but it's something I'd really like to believe in, because the twins influencing each other's speaking styles is just so cute.
And that's all! This was an exercise I undertook to get better at writing Lup, but I always really intended to post it too, so I hope it was interesting and insightful — I knew it definitely left me with a new appreciation for how Lup's way of speaking evolves over time, in particular!

CULLINS: For people who are not familiar with the game, how would you describe your character? LILLARD: I play a character that is living in plain sight in the world, and he is a horrible monster. Toward the end of the film, when my daughter can’t handle a situation, I have to step in and take over. I do not accomplish that goal and end up meeting my demise. It’s the first step in a journey that has this rich canon that spans multiple video games. I play a monster who, at the end of the day, gets his comeuppance and is thrown into this horror realm that he created. The hard part about playing this part is the pressure I put on myself to honor the fans, to deliver a great performance in an iconic role. There are millions of kids worldwide, and people that started playing as kids and are now adults, that have an expectation that this film will deliver on a really great level. So, being this iconic bad guy, the amount of pressure I put on myself to not suck is pretty extraordinary. That’s the hardest part.

DAVIDS: Before and after the reveal, I did catch some Stu Macher/Scream vibes from Matthew. I recognized that familiar live wire that he plays so well. Did you encourage that? Or did he just know instinctively that this guy warranted a bit of the same crazed energy that Stu had? TAMMI: Gosh, it feels like catching lightning in a bottle with Matthew because he just brings so much to the set and in the moment. And on that day in particular, we were just trying a bunch of different things for a bunch of different takes, and he was really coming alive in that [Yellow Rabbit] suit for the first time. Of course, we’d done some rehearsals with that suit, but it was a whole other deal once the camera was actually rolling in the properly lit pizzeria. So he was just going for it on every take and doing something different and really exploring in the moment. We just needed to make sure that we were there to capture it all. So, yes, there was definitely a back and forth between the two of us in terms of trying different things and really maximizing his menacing movement in that suit. But at the end of the day, he was just bringing all of his brilliance and improvisation to the table, and we were so lucky to be rolling on it.

I've been really jonesing, like really coveting an opportunity to get a chance to get back into the horror genre. Getting a chance to work with Emma has been lovely. I literally, when I'm in that costume I'm blind, and so I rely on her like very few performances I've ever had in my life, to help me... sorta craft this character on the fly, physically in how we're telling the story and where we're at in the lore, and how that applies to-- y'know, all of the information that's out there and available, it all comes through her [Emma Tammi] and she fills us with what we need.

Luz Noceda and What She Means to Me
Luz is the greatest character of all time of any media ever because she is THE Luz fucking Noceda, I have loved her ever since I saw the first episode, my favorite character and remained that way. She was always underrated by the fandom in her own show. She changed my life.

Her character is unapologetically cringe. She wears a cat hoodie and says “Meow meow.” She says random nonsense and gets big sparkly eyes and she stims by bouncing and running in place. She wears an otter onesie. She snorts book pages. She gives so many hugs.
She is androgynous, and I learned I wanted to have that style too. I saw Reaching Out and thought she looked so cool. I cut my hair and started dressing more androgynous and was so happy with that. It was inspired by Luz.
She ignores every binary. She wears a suit AND a skirt to Grom and it looks horrible but it’s HER. She has a derpy technicolor Palisman that shapeshifts. She is bisexual and she came out with an animated slideshow and a portmanteau couple name like the cringe silly icon she is.
She is so ADHD and she runs around and does the wildest impulsive things and she has volume control issues and she has a self insert Mary Sue based off her favorite fictional character, and now she’s going to battle an evil Christian colonialist in cosplay because she’s that cool.
She rediscovered a whole damn magic system and invented a bunch of spells and built an inter dimensional portal door in her backyard and she played a centuries old emperor like a fiddle and she saved so many people but she can’t even see it she doesn’t KNOW.
Her story means so much to me, her journey of being an outcast and feeling guilty for doing poor in school when she knows she can put her all into “waste of time” things like learning fantasy languages and hobbies like taxidermy. She let me forgive myself for failing college.
I didn’t truly forgive myself until I saw TTT and I cried the whole night realizing I can finally let go of that guilt.Just like Luz must learn. Seeing her find friends and family, and realizing her core wish is to be understood provides me so much comfort.
I’ve never known any character that made me feel so represented. Things that I used to be ashamed of, that Luz does too, I now feel positively about. I am so much softer on myself since I saw Luz make similar mistakes.
And her worst traits, that tendency toward self blame and keeping her guilt inside instead of confiding, made me reflect on my own tendency to do it, and I have worked hard to break this cycle. I see how harmful it is, not only to me, but loved ones, and I am changing.
My self esteem is higher now, I am forgiving of my disability, I feel safe to be a chaotic and silly mess, to be more androgynous, to get super cringey about fandom, and to reach out and confide in others. I have hope of finding people who I connect and feel at home with, like Luz did.
She is the cringiest little silly and also the most badass fucking LEGEND I’ve ever seen on screen. Luz Noceda the perfect icon. I am so grateful she exists. The ultimate character. Luz Noceda.

Wrote this crack pot of a one shot. Half of it written.
It took all of. Ten minutes, for guns to be drawn. The alien freezing as the new crewmember to Dolpina under Captain Ursa sat calmly amongst the human criminals. A crime pin, a legend and a straight up mythological figure. Their conversation prior flickered in this mind.
"And that's assume the fate of this world isn't already fucked."
The Galv was very quickly thrown to the floor, a black skinned human with very real looking horns closing the doors, red flickering energy emanating off the girl as she dragged the large alien by the earlobe.
Green, reptilian and somewhat humanoid. With flaps made to absorb more sound energy, thrown across the table as the figures looked to the man.
"... So what now?"
They all wore masks, accents playing through robotic tones all unique, but bland in a way it'd be impossible to decipher who the people were. Aside from the insignias on each of the three sides, the Wolves symbol easily recognisable, the new crew member and her iconic red eyes looked back at him.
Belly on the table, guns, melee weapons and eyes trained on myself.
Why can't I breathe?
The realisation started hitting me, the young human from before taking a seat, snickering at me as she remarked.
"Little man can't even breath through a four."
The nearby figures giggled, the masked woman. Triage, I believe, tilting her head. Before snapping her fingers. Not even correctly, half a noise of a click, but the people around the room snapped to attention.
"Out."
And immediately, the figures vanished, melting into the shadows, the light, jumping up or vanishing in a flicker of light. Scratching her chin, she looked to the man beside her.
"Now, what shall we do with him?"
Another woman. Triage? Walked out, sword in hand as she walked in.
"... Trini, I say we kill him."
Lowering the sword. Rearing back as she prepared to strike. The room remained tense, his body heaving in the air, the very matter. The energy. Something was between it, thick enough he could feel the difference between matter and energy, something was between the two.
Not only that, the figures here could. They could.
The green alien started shaking, looking around as he tried to help himself to his feet. The table opened up, lowering himself until he stood in the middle, nanites forming a cage around him, vibrating hard enough his signal flickered. Vanishing and appearing giving us time.
The shadows surrounded his vision, looking around, as the legendary man appeared beside him.
"Who the hell are you, and why should we not kill you right now Reva Galv, high class Glavi?"
He bore no weapons, crossing his arms, armour figures appearing around the alien. Eyes examining, masked, uniform and unique.
"You- You should fear my people and their-"
"I say four days."
Another woman spoke up, more of a British accent, bitterness, cold and more than a little flirty.
"What?"
"Please. We'll need at least a month or two to not make it look THAT suspicious."
The man looked between the two, the legendary figure, an angel who'd come down in the shadows. Lit a spark that marked a new age for the dark, before fading into the night. Skin dark enough to hide within it, dark holy armour. An oxymoron of a man, standing calmly before him.
There'd been rumours, as a representative and scout of the Glavi, he'd heard whispers of each of them.
Alpha, the angel who was no force of pure good.
Then the woman, red headed, cat ears and lazing as she squat or sat. Flicking finger across the blade.
During the time of chaos, when the Knights were no longer enough of a force, a group led by what was believed to be a young woman from France rose.
"Chiennes." (One syllable, she-end without the D)
Covered by dark, rumours ranging from her being an eldritch being, to the daughter of french nobility mixed with every European magical family when the Hapsburgs were forging and empire. Records he'd found left nothing, family histories wiped clean by fire or by obscurity.
Whatever the case, she might as well have been a myth. A patron of Joan of Arc, paintings showing possible wiping of someone from history that may have been an artistic method, but there was so much Terrans lost...
"Hé, connard. Dépêchez-vous et parlez avant de vous jeter dehors."
He nearly jumped out his skin, bumping into the larger black man. Looking down with a blank expression.
Her French. It. She said it stra-
"Hurry up you bastard. Either talk, or we'll cut you open."
Scratching his back, the Galv looking around.
Zeta, Michael something or other. His last name was lost to time and frankly not even he knew what it was apparently. Not much had been around him, quiet, staying on the fringes of "the other worlds".
He'd stayed near the front line of this "pure evil", whatever it was. He couldn't unravel it, his knowledge barely reached out. Hands trembling, heart pounding as he looked around.
"You gonna talk or, do we need to start doing shit?"
If Reva could jump out his skin any more than he was, he would. His fear was bordering madness, everything was moving slow enough he had time to have thoughts, but not enough he could properly calm down and think straight.
"Are. Are you people-"
"What the hell do you think?"
Jumping down the railing, the upstairs to wherever this place was, the woman from before looking at him. Four people with similar masks looked at him.
One, flickering, light but remaining dark. He couldn't see his body, beyond understanding-
"You're not gonna be able to see him mate. Fate's up on that."
Jolting, shivering as he snapped to the man behind him. Sitting beside another person, their gender androgynous, the man drinking something. Darker, like it were absorbing the light yet shining.
And it pales to the androgynous being. Looking with a bored expression, red eyes as he snapped to attention.
"Hey, Green eyes. You deaf? The fuck you doing in this meeting?"
Reva snapped back to attention. Reality, the eight or so individuals, seven? No, the ten. Twelve.
Click.
Click.
Click.
"Jesus Christ mate, just cut his throat out already."
Snorted the British man, sitting by the wolf side of the table, leaning back as the woman raised the sabre.
"Ait, clearly this man's-"
"WAIT. Wait. I. I need a minute."
Halfway to stepping onto the table, freezing as he collected his thoughts.
I started shoving the observations aside, I had plenty of time when I was out of this. This.
This death trap. For now, focus.
"... I'm here as a scout for the Gavi empire, to pertain information before judging a testing invasion of your people. I came here on rumours of a secret meeting, now what I was not expecting."
It took a while for him to compose himself, but he pointed towards us. Or we I suppose would be proper terms. Pointing at we, determination in his eyes as he continued.
"You, Eleanor Clementine, to hold ties to people that Terrans consider a legend. A myth. And what I believe to be the Caesar of his day."
Taking deep breaths, calming himself as the auras of the four or five around the table paused. Bemused, torturous, bored and static. Excited. A mix of emotions, he couldn't quite tell which one she was feeling.
"... I'm not Miss Eleanor."
They finally stated, looking at him, sabre placed on the ground to his relief.
"My name's Triage."
He'd heard a lot of rumours, asking about this Triage individual, most people shrugged. A newcomer who'd only come into play recently, reports of her in the past under the Knights. The Bitches. And Currently a transemploymentee of the Wolves.
These groups held a variety of functions, one of the many social political groups that worked in business. A company within the shadows, with the Knights many names jumping around the modern era. Bitches appearing later as a rebellious group, reforming around the Age of Steam.
And the Wolves. Old and New, formed around the world in various senses, the current one being forged during WW3. An event key but he'd yet to be given anything about what made humanity so. Secretive firstly.
There were a lot of rumours, and looking at him. A smile on her lips as she glanced at Zeta.
"... I'm more of a Caesar than that man, y'know for hiding in the shadows you're not that sneaky?"
A smirk on her face, eyes red as she kept the stare.
"... What. What do you mean?"
Tossing him a bag, she snorted.
"You ain't using the Mercenary Guild. Didn't swear anyone on nothing, just used people's influence and connections and trusted them in good faith."
Standing, the flickering figures around her vanishing as she leaned forward to the alien.
"Shame is, that rule only applies when people can guess you're working in good faith. A third told me about your inquries, make a guess how many I needed to figure out someone was looking in our secrets?"
If he wasn't scared before, he was now.
...
No, he wasn't scared. Shocked.
"... You knew?"
Swallowing his shock, watching the small lump.
"Y'know how far out net ran before we even saw your ships off in the distance with our tech?"
He froze. The first encounter had been peculiar, after some mild radiation issues, primative technology later explained to absorb radiation like a sponge and reused into small nuclear reactors (something they'd sworn up and down to be as safe to their own people for some bizarre reason).
But they'd apparently learnt a lot during war, nothing special. But the new tech they made was downright bizarre.
With crystals from "a couple quantum accidents", an energy that worked like any other, with a perfect conversation rate on one side.
The process was, and still is, a heavily guarded secret. In fact, it were to important that the humans had declared war on multiple empires, taking hundreds of research and advancing themselves faster than anyone could've predicted.
Rapidly changing the galaxy's dynamic, all behind secrecy of humans. Anyone who had tried to betray, well.
Glancing towards the Wolves, Knights, Bitches and the woman.
It was safe to say if a human was high enough to trust you with that knowledge, if you didn't protect the secret. You'd vanish from all but memory.
"... I feel like I would be horrified if I knew."
"... Yeah. You would. You've got all the pieces to this puzzle. But you're missing a few key components, something your kind thankfully will never figure out."
Reva froze. His people were among the highest of aliens, similarly adaptive to the Terrans...
"Is it moral sense?"
A smile, shaking her head.
"Hah. As if I'd give you any hints."

230814 Clash Magazine twitter update 'In Conversation With SHINee'
In the early days of prepping for this record, what was the group’s mentality like? Was there something very specific you each wanted from this process? TAEMIN: I think I wanted to show that SHINee is still as strong as ever. To be honest, during our promotions, I couldn’t really pinpoint our exact goal but now I feel like I can organise my thoughts and reflect on what my feelings were at that time: I still want to receive a lot of love when we’re on stage, continue to cherish what we’ve achieved, and maintain our strong bond with our fans.
So there’s still that feeling of pressure, even if it’s lesser these days, when you gear up to a release? TAEMIN: The album release was delayed from the original schedule, and we wish we’d had more time to prepare because time was really limited. Despite that, we were able to wrap up this promotion well. I tend to be hard on myself, but this time, I think I felt like I wanted to appreciate the moment.
SHINee have talked at various points over the years about their identity – as a group and individuals – and you explore this on Hard’s B-side ‘Identity’ with lyrics like “I want to find the original me” and “a destination to find in chaos”. Have there been times where the members experienced losing their way? TAEMIN: I’ve always tried to view myself objectively, and sometimes it felt like a trap in an endless cave. Fortunately, I’ve had really wonderful people around me, who were my greatest source of strength. I’m not sure if I can be someone who can say uplifting words to others but when I feel overwhelmed, I take walks which clear my mind and this has helped me.
As humans we’re constantly evolving; how have the members’ identities shifted since the release of ‘Don’t Call Me’ (2021), and how is this change reflected on ‘Hard’? TAEMIN: I decided to give myself a break and not to be so hard on myself. I wanted to focus more on the feelings of happiness and the positive energy that people give me from recognizing my work instead of contemplating what I’m lacking and overanalyzing my shortcomings. And because I was able to take a different approach and attitude toward this album, I was able to enjoy this promotion and feel more comfortable.
After 15 years, what – if anything – still makes you nervous as an artist? TAEMIN: The constant anticipation and expectations motivate me and heighten my expectations but, on the other hand, they can also be stressful. But this process is a significant part of my life, and the challenges make the sense of accomplishment I feel even greater.
Upcoming film aside, if there was one moment in your SHINee careers that you could revisit in-person – just because it was so amazing you’d like to experience it again – what would it be? TAEMIN: The moments I want to relive are not only from our [stage] careers but I really do want to relive those small moments when the five of us would have meals, talk, and fall asleep together.
The older we get, the faster time seems to move: Is there a new or different sense of urgency around your ambitions? And how does this compare to the early days of SHINee when, perhaps, you felt like there was also so much to accomplish? TAEMIN: I’ve achieved many of the things I’d aimed for and also experienced moments of wanting to give up. Going through numerous experiences and internal turmoil, I can see myself ageing, but the memories and records of us when we were young are vividly alive and preserved. So, personally, rather than a sense of urgency and ambition, I always want to do my best in the present and in this era.
The words ‘icons’ and ‘legends’ get thrown around too easily these days but SHINee really are both. Does it seem real for you, especially as you’re still an active, progressive group? Do you ever consider the band’s legacy and what you’d like that, ultimately, to be? TAEMIN: One of my juniors once said to me, ‘I feel like idols’ careers are extending because you continue to be active. Thank you.’ Hearing those words made me feel proud because it seems like we’re pioneering something, and when I see friends who consider me as their role model, it also helps me release all the built-up stress inside of me. Because of that, I feel a sense of motivation, I want to work even harder to inspire people, and I hope SHINee will be remembered as a group that continues to shine and remains in people’s hearts for generations to come.

Eh, Thursday Afternoon Toriyama posting is fun for now. I'm surprised by how much I've thought about it lately. Not like I'm usually the type to dwell on celebrity deaths heavily, but Toriyama's taken up as much of my mind as when Prince & David Bowie passed close to each other or having the two windows I followed pro wrestling line up with Owen Hart's, Eddie Guerrero's, and Chris Benoit's sudden deaths. We'll touch on it in time but y'all saw Oda is taking a break because of it right? So far I've re-watched a huge chunk of Dragonball and binged the excellent review by Totally Not Mark for Z. I don't think a lot of anime fans, myself included, ever gave Toriyama a fair shake for how truly good DB could actually be.
Like...think about Meruem & Komugi in Hunter x Hunter. How lauded that story is. How much controversy but praise Oda generated by taking such a freewheeling goofy direction with such a late stage of his story. Both of those are just elements of the Majin Buu Saga. Meruem has Cell's design and Buu's arc. And Mr. Satan saving the day by being a good friend and mentor to the Majin? I've always loved that. My actual first exposure was that stretch of the story, staying at a friend's house while Cartoon Network ran a marathon. I liked Videl and we got to see this wonderfully epic clash of titans:

I remember going back to school in the fifth grade, telling some guy friends who liked the screaming and blowing up Earth shit all about how I finally saw DBZ and they were horrified by how much I loved this nonsense. Mr. Satan is a legend and Goten/Trunks pulling a Vincent Adultman is iconic. But...ma cherie. Android 18 is objectively the coolest thing to come out of that series. You may disagree but it's objective so that would make you wrong. I mean, the Androids alone are already cool as hell for being such a solid callback to the earlier Red Ribbon Army arc. Who could forget 8? Guy was classic. First we have a couple of goofy ones then BAM! kickass young sibling pair named Lapis & Lazuli which is a high watermark in a world with some truly weird names. Since I'll be on about another favorite pair likely somewhat inspired by them tomorrow might as well say it.
That's not exactly off the wall right? Kiku & Izo, Jodio & Dragona, that combat sibling pair of a sister that's feminine but fierce and a kinda fey brother you definitely shouldn't underestimate? Nothing new under the sun but the trope certainly echoes from the Cell Saga. And honestly, can't help but notice that side of Okiku I always want to come out more. Lazuli's best moment that made me love her so much:

I do like how when she recognizes Goten & Trunks she just takes them out via disqualification using Krillin's disk technique. But I adore the conclusion now as much as I did then. Knowing Mr. Satan was enough of a preening dickhead to pay her double for the glory of the win and throwing the fight. Same flavor as what makes me love Kiku and the Yokozuna as much as I do with a distinctly Nami blend. Tell me those two couldn't play good cop/bad cop to shake someone down.
Honestly a lot of the way I see contemporary One Piece makes sense through that lens, the way the Buu Saga took a different approach was bold and controversial but got the series back to its roots. I bet Toriyama had a lot of fun with it. And thank you for the archetype I love so much even if I didn't fully appreciate the Ur-pair until after I came to love their inspiration.
This is probably too much to get into today, but you can't divorce this from what we know about the Cell Saga, how there was so much editorial meddling when it came to the villains. The more meta elements of how I see Kiku & Yamato, how one is set to age like fine wine even if she wasn't the flashiest and the other will probably never be as popular as you were at the start even if you started white hot. The Android Pair vs. Cell are a great example. Fans as a collective sometimes don't really know what they want, I get why Eiichiro Oda opines about "authors becoming slaves to readers." Weekly serialization is a wonderland. And that wonderland gave us something really cool along the way to giving editors another Frieza.

HELLO, IVE JUST FINISHED WATCHING WEDNESDAY
because i am the biggest dumbest nerd when it comes to the addams family: ive made a crappy list of why wednesday is everything i hoped for and more and why it is absolutely fucking perfect. spoilers.
im not entirely sure on how to start slow with this one so im getting right fucking into it. enjoy reading the disaster of my thoughts on this masterpiece:
AMAZING CASTING. jenna is incredible as wednesday, catherine and luiz are the perfect morticia and gomez, i adored seeing christina ricci KICKING ASS. gwendoline christie was amazing as weems, fred armisen as fester???? lost my shit he was so perfect. i don’t think there was a single cast member i wasn’t amazed with.
no genuinely i loved all of the nevermore students
fell in love w enid so fast omg i was rooting for her so hard her arc was so awesome (her and ajax are so cute too)
rip rowan you would’ve loved wenclair
THING!!!: its not the addams family without thing, and its especially not the addams family if thing isn’t being a little shit stirrer the whole time. perfect beautiful i love him A++ 
THE WEDNESDAY/PUGSLEY DYNAMIC WAS SO ON POINT they literally have the actual best sibling dynamic
i now know that you have not lived until you’ve seen wednesday addams stuck in a love triangle. she is not a character that you would expect to have a romantic interest but now in my mind she’s just beautifully a-spec and probably demiromantic. yes obviously i love xavier.
don’t get mad at me but i don’t ship her w enid that much?? at least not romantically but hey i would not complain if we had a polycule or qpr!!!
also it was genuinely so cute to see wednesday making friends like. why was i sobbing so much when she hugged enid. holy fuck.
THE DANCE SCENE. SHES AN ICON SHES A LEGEND AND SHE IS THE MOMENT
i am referring to both her actual dancing and ofc “they couldn’t even spring for real pigs blood. its only paint.” so real.
cant even stop myself from mentioning that jenna ortega looks very hot covered in blood which happens a lot in this series. like almost every episode. jesus fucking christ i am so in love with her.
i am a huge edgar allen poe nerd so i fucking adored every little reference to his works. also the idea that he was an outcast is so real to me.
speaking of outcasts: ngl definitely could’ve come up with a better name, “outcasts” just made it sound weirdly like some awkward teen high school drama but you get used to it
wednesday’s visions were so cool??? i loved the whole goody addams thing their interactions were really cool and god i just was not expecting that at all.
ok tbh it was really weird that her name was goody, since “goody” is the puritan equivalent of “mrs.” (its short for goodwife) so idk why they did that but ok i’m still here for it
honestly in general they do a really good job of keeping you guessing. i was suspicious about almost every single character throughout the whole series. 
in retrospect i should’ve known tyler was gonna be an asshole from the start cause. i mean. his name is tyler. no offense to my tylers, but be real when have you ever seen a tv show character named tyler that wasn’t a douche. i’ll wait.
i’ve typed tyler too many times and it no longer looks like a real name
episodes are nice and long but i obviously wish the series was longer, but it was super bingable and i’m probably gonna rewatch it 3 million times until the next season inevitably comes out.
not to be dorky but i loved how every episode title was a pun w the word “woe” 
i have really horrible media literacy in the sense that i overthink EVERYTHING so to me like almost everything in that was beautifully executed symbolism and maybe it was but when i say i lost my shit when i noticed wednesday stand on enid’s side of the room and fsr thats the only example i can think of rn BUT STILL
overall 5 stars 10/10 show i cant wait for more i love the plot i love the characters i love the cast i will be recommending it to everyone ik and more
