art fight???? how???

hey, could you explain a little about the art fight thing? i want to fight people !1!1!

Art Fight is an art gifting and trading game! It's been running in some form or another since (quickly checks about page) 2007 apparently but I've been playing it since 2016.

The way the game/event works is outlined here on the site's About page. Basically you just pick other users and draw free art for them of their characters--art you make for other people is called "attacks", and if you're lucky, they'll get "revenge" by drawing something back for you of one of your own characters, too!

There's a light framework of "teams" and "points" overlaid on top of that "draw art of others' OCs" concept to gamify it and give it a fun aesthetic (with team themes like sun vs moon, vampires vs werewolves, etc), but there are no prizes for the winning team, you can freely draw stuff for people on your own team, you can switch teams at any time, and... honestly most users don't really care about teams or points and are just in it for the OC gift art aspect of it.

I'm a huge fan of it because Art Fight feels like one of the last places on the internet that is by and for artists exclusively. On Art Fight you can openly relish in the fact that you're obsessed with one of your characters, or show off this idea for a cool story and setting you want to turn into a novel someday, or proudly display the fact that you've been worldbuilding in-depth dragon lore for a decade and be totally and completely surrounded on all sides by people who not only get it, but also are all doing the same thing. It's also a great way to give some love and support to beginner artists.

Some tips on how to have a better Art Fight experience:

Don't go in with the expectation that you'll get a ton of art, especially your first year. Your main goal should be to make gifts for other people.

If you are hoping to get "revenges" back, try to "attack" people who are definitely playing this year (as in, have drawn at least one attack this summer) but who aren't already swamped with a ton of attacks to "revenge" already. (Attacking only very popular/professional artists who get more attacks then they could ever possibly keep up with will leave you feel disappointed... that said, it's arguably worth attempting a few, just in case you get lucky, because that's how I got a drawing from Shoomlah, one of my childhood art idols!)

If you have an art blog, promote your Art Fight stuff to your followers there so they know you're playing. Playing with a group of friends is also more fun than playing solo 'cause you can always attack each other if you're not getting many revenges. Leaving nice comments on other people's characters and art can also help make you more visible/leave a good impression if you're brand new to the game.

Points and teams seriously don't matter at all, even a little. I suggest not paying them any attention at all beyond picking the team theme you think is cooler.

It's best to at least skim a character's profile and rules before drawing them. Not only does it help you get a better feel for the character, sometimes people put useful design details there instead of on their refs.

One more thing: Don't take Art Fight too seriously! You and everyone else are here to have fun. Don't get hung up on art "quality"--lots of people (including myself) are only doing headshots or sketches. Don't get upset if someone forgets a detail on your character or doesn't draw them quite "right". Don't get hung up on numbers or "ratios" or feel too stung if someone doesn't comment on or revenge something you draw for them. After all, Art Fight is for all types of artists, including young artists who don't fully understand netiquette rules yet, busy adults with full time jobs, people with disabilities that make it hard for them to communicate or hard for them to type or leave them with limited energy... etc. That doesn't mean they didn't appreciate what you drew for them!

Wow, I wrote too much. I should probably stop typing and go draw something for Art Fight before it gets too late in the evening!

TL;DR: Fun art gifting game. Great to rub elbows with other creatives for a month! Feels like an online convention of sorts! A+! Would recommend.

🥺🥺🥺 not 2 be sappy on main but omg I actually started off in Deviantart ages ago, that was the closest thing to social media for me until the tumblr migration lol. But I never really interacted with people on there, and even upon moving to tumblr, never really interacted with people here too often either. At first I had my main blog which was meant to be more professional since I was selling art to get a little college income, so I didn't really make too many irrelevant posts. Then I decided that I wanted to be able to reblog art and support other artists, so I made a side blog where I carefully curated and tagged the posts I reblogged. I made a few original posts but no one ever interacted, and eventually I realized that people only ever sent me asks there if I tagged anything wrong. Also I found out that adding stuff like series and character tags to a reblog on tumblr is basically useless because the op will pretty much always tag those things which makes it searchable on your own blog even if you don't tag it yourself. And if op DIDN'T tag it those things, your tags will make the post searchable on your blog but NOT in the general search, so it doesn't give op any more of a boost than just reblogging it tagless. So I made another sideblog, which I still have today, and I just rapidfire reblog literally anything I find shareworthy lol. Not any interaction there but at least I'm not wasting my time meticulously tagging strangers posts hsfjdlshfks. Since I was best friends with a big name fan in my main fandom (we became friends when I left a long emotional comment on their fanfic btw <3), I helped run some small fandom events and met more people as well. When I switched fandoms, it was a fandom event that gave me a new friend too, my posts never got any traction. Large fandom discords didn't really work for me either. But on this blog I was lucky, and for the first time people started like actually responding to my comments and posts, and get conversations going! And genuinely that's what's kept my brain rot so powerful I think, because bouncing ideas off each other and joking around and shitposting is genuinely the most fun I've ever had online!! I have to thank desta and oatmeal for the fun times especially, and hillbilly---man left really nice comments on my first few fics that really encouraged me, and I always have fun trading ideas with alienn, saikikthoughts, and crookedlyinnernightmare, plus everyone else who's on here, that's too many people to type out. AND I TYPED UP A BUNCH MORE STUFF BUT TUMBLR FUCKING DELETED IT!! Are you shitting me.... Well I think I remember saying that even if it's been getting kinda quiet and boring lately so my attention is starting to wander (I've pretty much posted all of the meta that's not deep fanfic hc at this point and my drawings take me a long time to make), I'll never delete this blog and I'll still be putzing around online until the day I die probably. And I'll always remember these days fondly and hope to find another great community like this one. And also I highly encourage everyone to post, reply, interact, and play with fellow fans! I've made lifelong friendships over blorbos and even if we don't have the same blorbos any more, we're still friends. Obviously stay safe online, never send money to strangers, probably wait like a year to start shipping each other stuff but still, reach out because you never know who you might meet! I've been lonely irl for most of my life for various reasons, and my online friends have been a lifeline honestly, they're all really important to me. Two of my best friends today come from fanfic comment sections!! Also I need to get around to archiving my meta on AO3 lol (yup, it's for meta too!) but that's gonna be a lot of work so -_-U).

Personality: laid back, cool, easy going, loyal, basically Rainbow Dash in a different universe-

Other info i can't categorize-

Went through a lot of alt styles,but stuck with being punk for the longest time

Their mother was Chinese and their father was Norwegian

Lived in Norway until they were 15,which is when their parents got divorced and they moved to britain with their mother and grandma

The name "Alma" came from a nickname Claws gave them when they were teens. Short summary: their friendship started out awkwardly by Claws giving them a green apple,and them giving her their chocolate bar..this went on for a few months until they actually became friends. Because of this whole "apple trading" thing,Claws gave them the nickname "Alma" which means apple in hungarian..and they loved it so much they stuck with it (and it's an actual name too!)

Never really fit in with the other kids...not like they wanted to anyway,kids were cruel back then yk

BEST FRIENDS WITH CLAWS SINCE HIGHSCHOOL!!! (totally didn't have an undying crush on her for years...doomed yuri my love </3)

Keeps the cementary safe and peaceful for the other ghostly beings, and they're kind of the "cool older sibling" for the ghost kids there

Drags anyone under the ground if they disturb the peace

Alma's biggest dream was to become a rockstar

Since they met their fate early on,now they usually just preform in pubs in the Underworld with their beloved guitar

I took a bit of a break from posting cus im tired as balls atm lmao

But i wanted to atleast chuck something out today so heres the ref/original idea sheet of Avery, my fnaf sb self-insert/oc from a while ago :)

(Ive already kinda shown this b4 but now it just looks nicer)

(And has all the writing stuff below the pic in this post)

Also here's some bonus info on him and his role and all :)

• Hes a trans dude (he/they pronouns) that "is built like a twink and dresses like a femboy" (quote from my friend lmao), and has an extremely ambiguous voice - British accent btw (grew up in the UK, he moved over to his current residence and lives w a roommate who was his online friend).

• Hes can occasionally be a lil bit of a freak behind the scenes XD. Has indulged in alot of fanfiction, draws some questionable stuff for money and also generally can have pretty crude and vulgar humor sometimes lmao.

• Hes pretty creative with a long ass list of hobbies. Loves fashion and costumes, is an artist, avid sewer and just generally loves making things with his hands in his spare time (100% brings his crochet to work XD)

• Has almost crippling anxiety about literally almost everything.

• Hes very polite and tolerates alot of bullshit to avoid conflict, but inside he is 100% raging with the heat of 1000 suns despite the fact hes outwardly shaking enough to be practically vibrating. He will definitely talk shit about the situation to himself in great, excruciating, dramatic detail with alot of angry cursing later and then probably cry about it.

• The boi is a little try-hard that will do their job above minimum effort in order to get praise, or out of fear for getting in trouble.

• Hes typically empathetic to a fault and a straight up (un)qualified therapist.

• Oh, also, hes a raging insomniac.

- First got the job because art commissions were a little slow and, hey, a more reliable source of money at the time wouldnt hurt.

- He was always kinda curious about the place because the scary stories about it were fun to pick apart and he loved the designs of all the animatronics (pft furry).

- He showed up to the interview scared shitless but they hired him almost on the spot, much to his confusion, as he was probably less than entirely qualified for this sort of job.

- From his very first day, he showed up pushing the dress code XD. But, he was indeed wearing the uniform, so he was technically following the rules(THEY COULDNT DO SHIT TO HIM 🥰) (well they could) (but the understaffing issue was more prioritised).

- His coworkers genuinely have no fucking clue how he manages to give enough of a shit to put that much stuff on every morning. The fits are always very over the top, considering all he had to do was put the damn uniform on, but alas, he usually showed up in head to toe accessories and such. It's honestly the best way he can make himself go into work. If he's gonna work a kinda shitty job that doesn't fit his schedule that well and have to do it on barely any sleep, THEN FUCK YEAH HES GONNA DO IT WHILE LOOKIN GOOD. Thats his philosophy on it, atleast XD.

- At first while he settles into the job hes just given shifts in general areas, working joint shifts with more trained security guards or maintenance people or animatronic handlers (those were his favourites. He always got excited like a little kid when getting to see any of the animatronics) to get him used to the place.

Fazbear ent. Was clearly desperate for employees as they were almost always understaffed, but it seemed that they weren't willing to give many employees a strict job role. Rather, expecting them to be a jack of all trades as to try and fix that little issue.

This also happened to apply to Avery, explaining why he was given such oddly scattered and different jobs to settle him in.

- Even as he did start becoming independent, this didnt much change.

One night he could be watching security cameras in the office, the next he could be counting stock at a gift shop, the next he could be helping out with minor maintenance tasks on the robots (despite his ZERO FUCKING KNOWLEDGE ON THEM. Great job there Faz.Ent. Oh well. As time went on he did get atleast a little accustomed to it and managed not to electrically fry his no-robotics-degree-having ass. And he also gained a bestie in the Parts and Services Department, so that was pretty helpful too).

Shit was pretty damn good.

- Thats when they 'suddenly' decide that daycare security is necessary. Something about parents becoming increasingly weary of the odd 'Daycare Attendant' animatronic.

With Avery being their newest hire and most likely to agree to take the position, he immediately gets targeted.

- Now, Avery isnt fond of kids.

Theyre annoying little shits.

So the second he hears 'daycare' hes like "fuck no".

Not to mention that his uh... 'look' (that management had still protested until eventually giving up) would probably set off some entitled mothers or something, and he'd rather not have parents screaming in his face about it.

- Alas, hes eventually convinced into it, under the condition that he gets to stay behind the security desk and not be bothered at all.

- Theyve had security there before, after a few... incidents... but it seemed like they were putting him on a more long term intended job.

- Turns out, from what he can gather from coworkers, a few people have been assigned to the daycare in the past for multiple different roles, but noone really enjoyed it and everyone avoided the place as much as possible. Sun just generally freaked everyone out with that weird... desperation he always had (which was definitely a part of what the parents had also been complaining about) and Moon just scared them all shitless, with the night security guards always looking over their shoulder in hopes of not crossing patrol with him. Noone really downright hated them, some even felt sympathy, but most were just too unsettled to interact with them.

- Avery, being a bit of a pussy, is even further put off from the job by these sentiments.

However, he perseveres and dresses his best to try and convince himself that itd be fine (aka, that if he died atleast hed die pretty).

- The daycare actually had its own themed uniform alongside the plain guard uniform, as did alot of other places in the pizzaplex. However, since the employees were given a choice, basically everyone chose to not don the more whimsical fits, and instead just use their badge to show the specific job or branch they were supposed to be legally assigned to.

- Avery, on the other hand, fucking lived for that shit. XD

Styled it like a girlboss and walked into work at exactly 6.30am, 30 minutes before the daycare opened, prepared to look perfectly the part for his job.

- When he walked into the daycare (he avoided the slide... hm.. maybe if he ever has a night shift here....) and the lights were already on and bright enough to blind a bitch.

Oh well, their electric bill, not his problem.

- He immediately settled behind the desk, planning to keep his ass planted there for the next few hours with one earbud in, hidden under his hair, as he would halfheartedly watch the kids.

But...

Something felt off.

Really fucking weird.

He was definitely being *watched*.

Observed.

Ugh, creepy.

He ignored it, blaming it on lack of sleep.

And thats about as far as i got plan wise for his lil plotline XD

Oh that sounds fun actually and very sweet

for favorite pieces its hard to choose actually. I think some of my favs are the one I drew of new life Scott and fWhip. Everything I drew for new life smp in general is something i really love and am proud of!

Then, very recent my picture of red life Bigb! The perspective is just so good on this one. I actually made a speedpaint of it as well but I forgot to put it on the post. I might reblog it an add the speedpaint.

I also love this picture of fWhip, which also has a speedpaint! The pose is great and honestly the title "Shooting cod in a barrel" is very fun to me

On a personal art level, I really love the picture I drew of all my siren ocs. Lots of feathers and colors and overall just very pretty.

On an emotional level...

I adore all the art I managed to draw for other people this year. I love drawing fanart for other peoples creation and honestly I just like drawing gifts. (btw you can find those art under my tag #i am a fan) January will be a lot of those artworks due to a fanfic/fanart trade (the hermitshipping big bang I am taking part in) which actually has some of the best pieces I drew this year! like genuinely i am so proud of those ones.

Otherwise everything I drew for my best friend @Samyoki this year as well. I don't upload most of it but its just something close to my heart and I love drawing and trading with them. Check them out, they are awesome. Heres a fun exchange from us!

Also I love all the memes I drew this year and the personal zines I drew and honestly all the vent art I drew as well but would never upload on this plattform. i LOVE drawing beasties!! as with the 3d work i do it really is a good way to clear the head by just going hmm. i want a weird animal here Right Now Immediately. especially if youre working in ink or marker so you just gotta flow with whatever happens. whoops theres a third mouth now. cool!

11- fav comment youve got on your work?

I actually only started posting my art online on a non-private acc when i opened this account so im Very unused to getting comments, but "all of em" is a cop out. probably the comment on my recent trigun piece that implied my work was consistently cool? certainly very flattering...

20 - what works have you done fanart of?

yeah so funny story i used to be REAL anti-fanart (for myself, not other people) and never really felt the drive or inspiration to make fanart - but ive done art for Sky: cotl (art trades w friends, mostly), as well as xreamy/boisvert (very cool go look go see!). honestly trigun has been the Big Thing for me, never made so much art for one thing before. on the other hand most of my original stuff is Blatant Ripoff quality so take that w a mountain of salt.

21 - weirdest thing youve ever drawn?

uh. to be honest i dont think i draw all that much weird stuff, aside from a few st sebastian style pieces for friends. a lot of the weird stuff comes out in my 3d work (no photos on hand, but i LOVE a classic twisted human form sculpture :] theyre so fun). depends on what you think weird is, i guess...

Hey hey! I can have a matchup too? You can do it whenever you have the time for. So I have black-half short hair. I love drawing when I’m bored or listen to (mostly sad or depressing-) music and songs. It depends on my mood. I love staying at home and I would respect everyone’s decisions. I like helping when need to but I can’t mostly help myself and have a high depression level but try to hide it. Nobody would notice it anyway. I’m also a big Video game girl and love interesting adventure games

Boyfriend: Rus (Fellswap Papyrus)

Two homebodies? Check. Struggling with mental health at times? Check. Honestly, this relationship would start out rocky. It would build slowly, mainly because Rus isn't confident and believes that he doesn't deserve you. But you both struggle, don't you? You both have bad days, but there are good days. There are great days. And honestly, when you both have great days, its wonderful. But if you both have bad days around the same time? Well, it's isolating, deafening, despite the both of you loving and caring for each other. Not wanting to bother others with your problems. Though he tries to get better. Because he wants to be there for you when he sees that you are struggling as well. He believes you are too good for him. Surely, you two will manage to get your mental illnesses under control (god knows Rus needs help with anxiety and depression). But once things are starting to get better mental health wise for the two of you, the relationship takes off. Seriously, you guys take care of each other, you guys encourage each other, and you are both understanding. Despite the rocky start, you two are each other's number one supporter. And truly, you've seen him at his worst and stayed with him, why wouldn't he be head over heels for you?

Romantic Interest: Red (Underfell Sans)

Oh boy, Red is your gamer buddy (so is Rus, but Rus isn't good at the games you love, and Red surprisingly is a jack of all trades with games). So you two will obviously be having a blast with each other. He tries to be there for you, but, well, he doesn't want to invade your space. He doesn't want to make you tell him if you don't want to. He supports you, and you support him. He will send you gaming memes to make you feel better (seriously, he cackles at some stupid gaming memes (gamers don't look up lmao)). And surprising, one some super lazy days, he tends to like to run his phalanges through your hair, it relaxes him. It's also done with a bit of affection- but don't point that out, he will deny it.

Best Friend: Error

Oh boy, you're best friend is an asshole, so you better be prepared for him to set you straight when mental health is bringing you down. Though he'll do it in a bit of an aggressive loving way. Because you're his friend, who tries to understand him, who does their best to give him the space and support he needs. You give him lots of things, and he isn't quite sure how to show you without being a dick about it. But know it's all out of love for you. And oh boy, he would say that you're better at art than Ink! (Whether that's to boost your confidence in yourself, or he's denying Ink's artistic abilities as nothing more than a nuisance, you best believe that he enjoys what you create.) And yes, he's willing to game with you (or watch because somehow he finds glitches in games way too often).

I felt mostly better today. Mostly. My skin was very red and I was feeling pretty self conscious. But I mostly had a really nice day.

Sleep was easier. But I woke up at 3am and fell out of my hammock and smashed my knee on the ground and was very upset. I was very shaken up and laying in the floor. But I got up and got a drink and wasn't to injured at least. I had a little trouble falling back asleep and spent a little time on my phone deleting stuff because my cloud storage is getting very full.

A storm started again around 330 and that sound made me fall asleep. And that was good sleep. I woke up at 7 and felt a lot better.

And it was a pretty good day. Even if the humidity makes my hair very frizzy and my skin hurt.

I got washed up best I can in here and got dressed. I had a little breakfast and made sure things were set up for my groups. And then I just sat here for a long while. I was tired. Maybe more emotionally then physically.

But all my groups were lovely. I had a CIT hang out here all day and she was nice enough, though didn't want to do much. I set them up with some art and would mostly stay inside.

I would spend time outside. Teaching beading and drawing and bracelet making. And it was a lot of fun!! Honestly today was a very good day.

I was able to do my knitting. And made a bracelet. And enjoyed hanging out with my groups. Candela, one of the Spanish internals, came to hang out and she would do some watercoloring while I worked on my painting. Which is going very well!! I am probably going to work on that a bit more tonight.

Lunch was good. I had a soda with lunch because I needed the energy. And it helped. I had three more classes after lunch. But for real I had a great time.

I stopped at the trading post to talk to CJ and my Pokemon pedometer came up because I was still sad it wasn't working. But when I got back up here I pulled it off the shelf to see if I could figure it out and I did!! Digital Charlie lives!! I hope to get him to best friend level again soon!!

I had forgotten to bring my hammocks in before the rain. But they were mostly dry by the afternoon. I had a daycamp group, and then the older boys. The daycamp group struggled with instructions, but the older boys let me teach them look bracelets and they did such a good job! Even if they didn't think they did at first. Was very proud.

I lent some clothes to one of the boys for their skit tonight. And there was frolicking and it was very sweet. And then I had tipis kids to end the day so CJ got to come hang out with me and we made bracelets and I showed a boy how to make a bead turtle and it was a lovely way to end the day.

I walked to tipis to the pool. I wouldn't actually swim, just sat on the cove for a while. Before going to take a shower.

It was nice to be clean. I put on a new outfit, like I normally do after my afternoon shower. And then realized we were supposed to go to a specialty meeting so I got Laura and we walked up to the office.

It was an alright meeting. I kept getting interrupted and that made me feel stupid so I shut down just a little. I was glad when we were done and could go to dinner.

And dinner was really good!! The horse camp girls keep hugging me and saying I fixed dinner because I said something and I'm glad they feel better too. I am happy with the changes and I am grateful to the kitchen staff for the effort.

I had a nice time at dinner too. Talking to CJ and people watching. I like helping set dinner up and then we got ice cream sandwiches and that was a nice treat.

After dinner I went to talk to the nurse and then I came up here to chill. I got in my hammock and read for an hour. Was sad when I found out they got snowcones again and no one told me. I don't know why no one tells me. But it's fine. I'm only a little sad about it.

I am going to make a little treat for myself. And maybe I'll just paint for a bit before I go to sleep. I hope I sleep easier and through the whole night. I hope you all have a good night tonight. Sleep good.

Quick question do you ever miss Misaki? it felt like they were a ray of sunshine in this side of the community I still don't understand why someone would hurt such a nice person :( I know they meant a lot to some people on here and not seeing you stop by with your hilarious anon ask on their blog or them drawing your ocs just makes things so sad :'(((

of course I do, tbh I didnt tell anyone this but I kinda felt emotional about it too, liked rebloging her stuff, doing art trades and sending her goofy asks on anon which where obviously me was fun but also she just dmed me out of no where wanting to be friends in a really cute way and I felt more comfortable on here when she was on.

I also feel sad like maybe I should have just blocked or deleted those gossip anons? I still remember getting my first one and didn't think much of it , I didn't respond to it , figured it was jus a person who clashed with her that was all but I kept getting them, I wish tumblr had a private reply button for anons I was hoping I could convince them calmly just to leave her alone. Things got really creepy when I saw one of her stalker anons said they had to use their neighbours internet to still anon her, this kinda freaked me out and honestly I 100 percent get why she left not all the anons she got where even on her blog she told me somebody left her a shitty farewell anon.

It is depressing to say this but if you find a new blog and recognise her ocs you prob will have to dm her first before following and this might be a risky option if your previous relationship with her was very open but even if you where just one of her kind anons she is gonna have trust issues on this site for a while.

My way of dealing with it is to just try and distract myself with new blogs and new projects I thankfully have made a few other friends on here. That is why I cope , avoid and distract ;(

Try and think of the positives anon tho , she needed to get away from a toxic environment and as long as she has family and good friends she can heal (= maybe even in a few yeas you will see her again, full of confidence wth her own secure happy blog and by then whoever these anons where will have moved on x

There actually are enough good fics about postcanon tentative reforging of assorted pairs and even the whole of the Gusu Summer School No Brain Cell Trio to satisfy my niche itch, so pls enjoy these stray snippets of a fic I don't have to write:

Nothing would've happened if the cultivation conference wasn't at Cloud Recesses. But it was, Cloud Recesses with its pale stone and gracefully winding walkways and too many memories, including Lan Xichen sitting the whole thing out in seclusion somewhere... If it'd been at the Unclean Realm, Nie Huaisang would've been busy and if it'd been at Carp Tower the memories only would've been manageably bad, and if it was Lotus Pier or one of many smaller sects, it would've been...fine. Just fine.

But it was Cloud Recesses this year, this first conference since Jin Guangyao's downfall, and specifically it was half past ten at night, and Nie Huaisang was wandering the elegant pathways with a mostly full jar of wine in one hand. The previous jar, now entirely empty, had been left back in his room. He was a Nie, so he was only half as drunk as he'd always used to pretend at these things - but at least twice as drunk as he'd ever actually been.

After da-ge's death, of course. Before that, he used to get plenty drunk. Playfully drunk. With friends.

It would be a terrible idea for him to go appear on Lan Xichen's doorstep. Neither of them was ready for that yet.

So he appeared on Jiang Cheng's.

[ . . . ]

"Fine." Nie Huaisang pouted and turned. "I'll go ask Wei-xiong - "

And Jiang Cheng was easy, he was so easy, he'd always been easy, the only new thing is the faintest edge of wariness to his fury -

He grabbed Nie Huaisang's elbow in a flash and snapped, "Ugh, fine, I'll go - but I'm holding the wine."

Nie Huaisang laughed and handed it over. Jiang Cheng immediately took a deep swig.

[ . . . ]

It must've been a quiet night at the Jingshi. Wei Wuxian's sleeping robes didn't look the least bit hastily pulled on, and his lips were only the slightest bit red and puffy.

[ . . . ]

[for the record, this takes place in a book-show postcanon fusion wherein immediately post-Guanyin Temple, WWX and LWJ ran off to fuck in the bushes at least once a day for as long as possible, but in their absence, various sect leaders voted that Lan Wangji should be Chief Cultivator now, and alas some messenger caught up with them about six months into their honeymoon. Definitely caught them in flagrante delicto. Tragic for all. I’d probably communicate all this hereish somehow. It was definitely NHS who finally tipped someone off on how to actually find them.]

[ . . . ]

"Yes, yes, I'm coming," Wei Wuxian said, with a lidded look at Nie Huaisang, and Nie Huaisang burst into a giggles because the two most unequivocally lethal people he knew were afraid to leave each other alone with him, and it was satisfying to be recognized but also what's he going to do, personally? Cry at them? It'd taken him years to destroy Jin Guangyao, and at this point it'd take him months, if not years again to re-destroy the Yiling Patriarch, much less Sandu Shengshou. Especially when they both kept doing things like watching each others backs while pretending they weren't.

[ . . . ]

"Of course we need more!" Wei Wuxian declared. "This isn't even Emperor's Smile!"

[ . . . ]

"It's just a rat or something," Jiang Cheng scoffed.

"So?!" Wei Wuxian cried grandly. "Are we not noble cultivators? Is it not our duty to investigate this woman's complaint, and to slay whatever monster plagues her good inn’s wonderful cellar, whether deathly or monstrous or rodential it be?" He turned to Nie Huaisang and begged, "Help me out, Nie-xiong. You agree with me, right?"

Nie Huaisang clutched his cup against his chest, eyes wide, and shook his head in sharp jerks. "I don't know! I don't know!"

Wei Wuxian laughed and elbowed him in the side.

[ . . . ]

[while waiting for Wei Wuxian to send some sort of signal]

"You know I don't bear any grudge against Jin Ling, right?"

Jiang Cheng's impatient glare snapped to him, darkening with threat; his hand shifted on Sandu's hilt toward a drawing position. "What?"

"I don't bear any sort of grudge against Jin Ling," Nie Huaisang repeated, holding only the last jar of Emperor's Smile. "That's why you've been side-eyeing me all night, right? All conference." He took another sip (it really was the best!) and added recklessly, "If I wanted Jin Ling dead and disgraced, or all Carp Tower burned to ash, they already would be."

Sandu slid an inch out of its scabbard and Nie Huaisang watch it with fascinated curiosity. From a greater distance, he wondered if that was entirely healthy.

"What about Lotus Pier?" Jiang Cheng asked abruptly.

It took Nie Huaisang a blinking moment to focus on him.

"What about Lotus Pier?"

Jiang Cheng sat beside him on the cold earth and yanked the jar out of his hands, cruelly before Nie Huaisang could take another sip.

"Where's your grand terrible vengeance against me and mine? I get it, but if you're being honest for once right now, you could at least tell me when it's going to hit, and how."

"What?" Nie Huaisang pushed himself against his tree trunk, genuinely confused. "Why would i have a terrible vengeance planned against you?"

"I benefitted from Nie Mingjue's death, didn't I?" Jiang Cheng took another swig of wine of his own, and swung the jar illustratively. "My disciples have hunted in your territory while you 'weren't paying attention.' I absolutely fleeced you in that trade deal four years ago. And I worked with that bastard as much as anyone but Lan Xichen, especially on those damn watchtowers, and you broke him. So when's it my turn?" He pointed at Nie Huaisang, finger only wavering slightly. “If you fuck with Jin Ling, Wei Wuxian, or my sect, I will fuck you back.”

"You- oh, gimme that. Gimme. Gimme!" Nie Huaisang leaned forward and tried to grab the wine jar, and more importantly whined until Jiang Cheng handed it to him.

He stared at it for a moment, thrust it back and ordered, “Drink,” without letting it go, and once Jiang Cheng had dutifully tilted it back, pulled it back and slugged down the last swallows. He needed more alcohol for this much honesty, and so did Jiang Cheng.

He set the jar down very carefully, because the ground seemed to be moving, and leaned forward with even more care. He enunciated clearly, “Everyone fleeced me, and hunted in my territory, and I acsh- ass- let them. Why would I expect you to go looking for trouble with Jin Guangyao, when he had your heart locked in a box in his treasure room?”

Jiang Cheng, who was a respected master of all five arts but probably hadn’t actually read poetry for fun since an instructor had officially declared him as such, and who was himself at least a full wine jar in, squinted in angry confusion.

Nie Huaisang rolled his eyes. “He had final say over where and how Jin Ling spent his time, and could’ve tried to poison him against you. What would you have even have done if I had come complaining?”

Jiang Cheng’s face only fell further, with the very sort of drunken moroseness Nie Huaisang was out here to avoid.

Nie Huaisang attempted to swap him sharply. He failed on both the swap and the sharpness.

“Stoppit! Stop thinking you’re not useful! You weren’t! I needed to pry er-ge away from him and for that only Lan Wangji would work, and I needed someone to watch his back through thick and deadly thin, and to be so disruptive that even Meng Yao couldn’t...circle, sneaky, planning...”

They were waiting for the pulse of a light talisman from the other tunnel entrance, half a mile away. There was a small but very bright explosion. laced with resentful as well as spiritual energy.

“Motherfucker!” Jiang Cheng cursed, leaping to his feet and drawing Sandu in one hideously coordinated motion.

“Just Lan Wangji, I think,” Nie Huaisang said, because Nie Mingjue himself couldn’t have stopped him. He groped for his own weapons - fan, check; wine jar -

“Oh no!”

“What?” Jiang Cheng snapped, as he bent and dragged Nie Huaisang to his feet with one hand. (Hideously coordinated. Sword people, honestly...)

“He’s going to be so mad that we finished the wine without him!”

[ . . . ]

[three grown-ass men, two sect leaders and one Yiling Patriarch, flying at high speed through Caiyi Town on one sword, all screaming. Nie Huaisang is clinging to Wei Wuxian; Wei Wuxian is flinging to Jiang Cheng, a little bit to Nie Huaisang, and most importantly to a chicken, Jiang Cheng is flying the sword. There is a bedsheet draped over all of them from where they ran into a laundry line. It’s 2am. Again I say, all are screaming]

[ . . . ]

[it probably wasn’t a rat - not just one, at least. Wei Wuxian does something incredibly clever, possibly including a creative use of that bedsheet; Jiang Cheng singlehandedly defeats something in combat, probably after he and Wei Wuxian shove each other out of the way of blows without either of them acknowledging it. Nie Huaisang shoves them both under cover and then with perfect professionalism tells whoever came to check on the ruckus that they handled the problem exactly as planned with absolutely no involvement of alcohol, and the Chief Cultivator will foot the bill for the unfortunately absolutely necessary property damage. Overall, they did handle the problem, but the local cryptid they were chasing will only have its reputation swelled and its continued existence assumed by all locals. it is possible that they themselves made this cryptid up two decades ago, but idk how heavy-handed we want to be.]

[ . . . ]

Nie Huaisang was leaning heavily on Wei Wuxian by the time they got back to the guest quarters. He could hold his alcohol, he was a goddamn Nie, and frankly he’d had it adrenalined out of him at least twice this evening. But he’d also had rather a lot, and he didn’t have Jiang Cheng’s golden core or Wei Wuxian’s blithe lack of sleep schedule.

“I missed this,” he admitted, head on Wei Wuxian’s (Mo Xuanyu’s) shoulder while Jiang Cheng opened the door.

Wei Wuxian leaned his head on Nie Huaisang’s. “Me too.”

“You’re both fucking annoying,” Jiang Cheng grouched, which meant, Me too.

Wei Wuxian stripped off Nie Huaisang’s muddy outer robe and tucked him into bed, and Jiang Cheng poured a glass of water from the pitcher by the door, drank it, poured another, scowled at Wei Wuxian for a moment, and set it on the bedside table. Wei Wuxian glanced at him out of the corner of his eye, finished with Nie Huaisang and started backing out of the room.

Nie Huaisang sat up more or less abruptly. “Both of you have got to stop that bullshit. I miss my brothers, okay? I’d I had a second chance...” He sagged back down with the plural, and flung an arm over his damp eyes. There was a glimmer in the sky; it’d be morning by Lan standards soon. “I fucking miss them.”

“...Ah,” said Wei Wuxian, who always spoke even when he didn’t know what to say.

“Yeah,” Jiang Cheng said abruptly, and, “Drink your fucking water.” And the door slammed behind him as he walked out.

[...a few lines of dialogue later...]

“Seriously, you can go.” Nie Huaisang flicked a few tired fingers in dismissal.

“Are you sure?” Wei Wuxian added with an audible smirk, “Because if I stay up for another half hour, I can wake Lan Zhan with a morning...big ol’...loving...”

Nie Huaisang finally adjusted his arm to crack one eye up at him.

“People usually cut me off before I get that far,” Wei Wuxian admitted.

Ah man, I’m sorry but I’m not the best person to ask this to! I started this sideblog cause I had too many followers on my main and I didn’t want my stuff to be seen by that many people at first, so whatever I did probably isn’t what you’re looking for :( but really there isn’t much to it, just post whatever you like to draw, tag it as best as you can (but remember that only the first five tags appear in the search page) and be patient, since whatever you do at first you won’t get much attention anyway - the only real advice I can give is to draw something that makes you happy and that you’d draw anyway even if no one were to see it, it’ll make keep posting despite a possible lack of activity a lot easier!

where’s MY S/O who makes pretty and delicious sweets for me….. these boys don’t know how lucky they are………………..

CHESLOCK

… So, to start with, he now gets first dibs on everything they bake! He’s got a massive sweet tooth so to have him attempting to sneak bites of all the cookies and shit is pretty much unavoidable. And actually, he doesn’t sneak. He doesn’t tiptoe around grabbing them while his S/O’s back is turned, he doesn’t do puppy-dog eyes to beg them for some, and he doesn’t trade favors. He pretty much just blatantly snatches whatever he wants and eats it in full view of his S/O. If they need him to not eat even one bite, they probably need to start smacking his hands away, because no matter what they do otherwise, that’s the only way he’ll listen.

CLAYTON

Well, as long as it makes them happy, that’s what matters, right? He doesn’t have super strong feelings on the matter one way or another. He just views it as something they enjoy doing, so as long as that’s true, he certainly isn’t going to raise a fuss about it either way. Of course, if they want him to sample whatever they’re making, he’ll do it happily. He’s not huge on sweets, as in he won’t seek them out over anything else, but he does indulge from time to time. Surprisingly, he likes the decorations more than actually eating the cookies. His S/O is incredibly talented with their hands, and it amazes him what they can do.

EDGAR

Oh, good God, yesssss. The fact that his S/O likes to bake is ― pun intended ― the cherry on top for him. His sweet tooth isn’t quite as bad as Cheslock’s, but it’s still pretty bad. He has a weakness for red velvet and buttercream, don’t judge him! He’s also got a weakness for the aesthetics that often come along with pastry decoration and the like, so his eyes just light up when he sees his S/O’s creations. One of his usual things is to give a pitiful sigh and say, “Why did you have to make these? They’re too pretty to eat!” It’s like they’re teasing him, and even though he’s still going to eat whatever they’ve made, he likes to poke a little fun.

EDWARD

Of course, it’s a rather common hobby they have, isn’t it? Even so, he has a certain admiration for the things they’re able to accomplish with some frosting and fondant. A lot of their decorated sweets look like things that his sister would like, or things that just remind him of her. Looking at whatever his S/O has made, he gets this soft, fond look on his face. Although he isn’t usually tempted by sugary things, he’ll still gladly taste their creations if they ask him to. Honestly, he’ll probably ask them to make some things for Lizzie’s next birthday… and be surprised that (Name) will do some for his birthday, too.

GREGORY

Ohh… well, that’s actually like a form of visual art. It’s not quite the same as his own sketches and paintings, but it’s in the same sort of area. The creations his S/O makes require the same careful hand as his drawings, the same understanding of structure and color. And, even better than his own work ― theirs can actually be eaten. Mmm. Although he isn’t as much of a sugar fiend as some of his friends, his downfall is anything made with lavender or plum. If(Name) makes anything with those and turns their back for a second, it will disappear very quickly. He often has to confess soon after thanks to the immediate stomachache he gets from eating so fast.

HERMAN

If that’s something they enjoy, then honestly, more power to them. It clearly takes a deft hand to do things like that, with all that attention to detail, so they’re undoubtedly talented. He can respect what his S/O does even if it’s not necessarily something he’s into; he always does like seeing the end results. And despite his assertions that he isn’t a fan of sweets, he’ll still eat every single thing they put in front of him. Not only eat it, he’ll enjoy it, too! Though he’s a little more stoic about it than some of the others, he still makes sure to give them a proud smile whenever they show something off to him.

JOANNE

Oh, that’s… that’s such an incredible thing they can do! He thinks they’re like miniature works of art, and what’s more, they’re food?? He’s completely mesmerized that they’re able to make such perfect-looking things that are edible. It’s certainly more impressive than anything he can do. He tries to pretend like he’s not completely brought to his knees by sweet things, but… well… after one bite, followed by another, and another, and on,he really can’t hide it. Good news? He’ll taste-test anything for them. Bad news? Like Gregory, he might ignore his limits and end up with an upset tummy a few times. All in the name of delicious sweets, though!

LAWRENCE

Surely they know his mind is more intellectually inclined than artistically, and yet… he can’t help praising his S/O for their efforts. Maybe in spite of the fact that he isn’t gifted at those kinds of things, he’s impressed. Even though he tries to act unaffected, the truth is that he always smiles when he’s looking at their creations. He’s got a small sweet tooth, too, so he has exactly no problems eating anything they give him. Actually, looking at and eating whatever they make him tends to be relaxing for him. However, don’t expect that to mean he won’t also give them detailed notes on both taste and presentation…

SOMA

Ohhhh, goodness, no, no… they can’t do this to him!! He can feel his teeth starting to rot just by looking at all the things they’ve made. Not only does he plan to eat as much as they’ll let him ― it’s all so cute! Obviously people eat with their eyes first, and that includes Soma. He’s in the same camp as Edgar, quietly whining in Hindi about how his S/O’s creations are all too gorgeous to be eaten. That… doesn’t stop him, though, because they also taste incredible. Although he might not get a stomachache from eating too much or too fast, he’ll definitely get a little (hopefully) temporary tooth pain from all the sugar. He thinks it’s completely worth it, though.

Last night I had the pleasure of vending at Summer Sweat!! It was an event planned by my friend Johnny Q. My fiancé was awesome enough to introduce me to him awhile ago and now anytime he's planning an event he usually messages me and asks me to be a part of it in some way! It's always fun and I have such a great time.

Tonight I saw a bunch of friends from high-school, my fiancé did as well! Many of them looked just like they did on graduation day but taller.

We talked to a couple of drunk people and had some wacky interactions. One guy bought us two beers in exchange for one of my Venom tank-tops and that was very funny. That same man gave Huey a $100 bill to go get those beers???? He was absolutely wasted and we were only tipsy so when a man hands you $100 and says "get beers"- well. Huey got the beers. And they were delicious. Wanna know his name? I swear to god he told my fiancé it was "Dammet, pronounced like "God dammit". Absolutely mind blowing. He was also 41 years old and apparently a local electrician (he tried to hire us at his job???) Dammet was a 10/10. He even apologized for bothering us before he left (he also spent $6 more on stickers from my shop). The other drunk guy was just very annoying, honestly. He hard a hard act to follow, sure, but the guy was also a bit of an asshole.

We had a great 7 hours. I made a lot of sales and I did an art trade with my new friend Sarah. I sketched in between customers and a bunch of our friends bought us drinks! That's what the thank-you drawings are for in the photo set. Stickers, t-shirts, and buttons where the top sellers. A 10 year old (?) bought one of my Mentos Illness stickers and one of the women he was with said, "Oh, we can put this on your backpack!" I just "??????" in real life because I honestly don't think they know it said "Mentos Illness"........but also why would I be selling a bunch of weird shit and then also some Mentos stickers. Life is so funny.

kraken bait 3: the moment of truth

the moment is finally upon us! no, not the actual expansion draft, that’s in 10 days. i mean my last (but best) installment of the kraken bait expansion draft theories!

this has been a long, long work in progress, basically since i posted the last one. i’ve asked nearly every hockey fan i know, as well as randomly messaging several friends and cool people on hockeyblr, for their ideas and opinions on their favorite team’s expansion draft situation. and as with my previous lists, i had my friend and capfriendly consultant corwin (@chaos-hockey) collaborating with me to make this semi-reasonable (largely against their wishes). i’ll be including commentary from myself and my variety of sources with each pick.

for reference, this is a somewhat plausible look at who seattle might take in the expansion draft. it’s not a prediction, because even i don’t honestly think the kraken will take some of these players, but it’s a fun simulation. it does follow expansion draft rules, and even comes under the cap (which took some last-minute finagling by me and corwin).

without further ado, let’s get into it! this list got long, so it’s all under the cut.

Anaheim Ducks: Haydn Fleury

this one comes straight from resident danton heinen fan, ergo ducks fan @dantonheinens, so thanks for your help casey! they sent me a very detailed explanation of anaheim’s expansion draft situation basically explaining that there’s a whole lot of “ands, ifs, or buts” with the ducks, but if fleury is exposed, he’s a slam dunk (slam duck? i’m sorry)

Arizona Coyotes: Christian Fischer

the one thing i know about this dude is he got wrecked in a fight with nathan mackinnon in the 2020 playoffs. this is the first of several picks on this list i borrowed from The Athletic’s mock expansion drafts, which happens if i don’t know the team and i don’t know anyone else who does. corwin and i also considered taking adin hill from the yotes, but we decided on some other goalies instead (stay tuned).

Boston Bruins: Jeremy Lauzon

i have a lot of friends who are bruins fans, so credits are owed to: corwin, casey again, alex (@patron-saint-of-boston-hockey) & luna (@kureally) & any other bruins fans in the nwhl discord, and my irl bruins friends. i got a lot of opinions on the bruins pick, including jake debrusk, jakub zboril, connor clifton, and trent frederic. but the one name almost everyone could agree on was lauzon. therefore, i’ve decided he’s headed to seattle.

(it feels worth it to mention that at the prospect of having to take someone from the bruins, corwin said “curses be upon your name!” in an aggressively thick boston accent)

Buffalo Sabres: Rasmus Asplund

i could not tell you who this is, other than the fact that he’s one of buffalo’s three rasmuses (rasmi?). corwin and i had also talked about maybe putting anders bjork here, like i did in the last go-around, but i defaulted to The Athletic this time, and they thought asplund was a good pick, so here we are.

Calgary Flames: Mark Giordano

another pick borrowed from The Athletic, but i’ve seen predictions of giordano to the kraken a fair amount. it just seems right (and a whole lot better than corwin’s proposition of matthew tkachuk from last round).

Carolina Hurricanes: Brady Skjei

this one comes from the lovely @summerteukka, so thank you kinga! she gave me a very good rundown on the canes and the expansion draft, with the conclusion being the canes have so much defensive depth that it’s definitely going to be a defenseman, and especially if they resign dougie hamilton, skjei seems to be a likely choice. i’m all for it- we’ll have “an S and a K and a J all next to each other” on a kraken jersey.

Chicago: Adam Gaudette

similarly to the arizona pick, corwin and i considered a goalie here- in this case, it would have been malcolm subban. but he is not one of the goalies we ended up going for. instead, we opted on bringing micaela gaudette and her husband back to the pacific northwest.

Colorado Avalanche: Ryan Graves

this is really a no-brainer. gravy is a good defenseman, but the avs have such a strong defense between cale makar, devon toews, and sam girard (and you could add erik johnson when he’s healthy), plus up-and-comers like bo byram. gravy will almost definitely be exposed, and i think he’s a great pick for seattle. plus it’s relatively painless for avs fans who also will like seattle (like yours truly).

(corwin also wanted me to mention that they want gravy traded to the bruins so he can play with curtis hall, who is basically “color-swapped ryan graves”)

Columbus Blue Jackets: Dean Kukan

another pick taken right from The Athletic. i do not know who this is, but he’s a defenseman and the writers liked this pick so i went with it. for the record, corwin really wanted this pick to be boone jenner because he has a funky name, but i wanted another defenseman, so the fun name was sacrificed for function.

Dallas Stars: Jason Dickinson

i don’t really have an explanation for this one. corwin and i were talking about the stars options and picking dickinson just felt right.

Detroit Red Wings: Vladislav Namestnikov

thanks are owed here to joce (@doubleminor) for her red wings expertise! she gave me a few players who were likely kraken bait and i picked from there. it came down to evgeny svechnikov and vladislav namestnikov, but i went with namestnikov in the end. he was with the avs for a brief period and i liked him then, plus the vibes just seem right, so here we are.

Edmonton Oilers: Tyson Barrie

really, tyson barrie was the player who started the whole kraken bait thing. corwin made the drawing, i made the first list, and the rest is history. do i actually think tyson will be going to the kraken in a week? not really. do i still really like the idea of it? 100%. therefore, i will continue to engage in my “tyson barrie to seattle” nonsense.

Florida Panthers: Chris Driedger

oh look, our first goalie! florida had some interesting skater options, but when it came down to it, corwin and i thought the cats were a good place to take a goalie from. driedger did pretty well this season, plus the panthers’ goalie situation is locked up between $10 million man bobrovsky and future star spencer knight.

Los Angeles Kings: Viktor Arvidsson

corwin was feeling pretty strong about this one, so i’m trusting their judgement. according to them, seattle expressed interest in arvidsson, so nashville traded him to the kings instead of giving him up for nothing. now the kings get to give him up for nothing, which works out pretty well, considering i had absolutely no clue who to pick from the kings.

Minnesota Wild: Matt Dumba

like some other picks, this just seems right. i like matt dumba a lot. he seems like a fun and wholesome guy, and his activism, both on his own and with the hockey diversity alliance, is admirable. i hope he gets to display his personality and keep working to better the sport of hockey with the kraken.

Montreal Canadiens: Jake Allen

goalie number two! picking a player from the habs was weird because i got attached to them during the playoffs, but i really don’t know many of their players? so corwin and i deliberated on this a little, and after looking at our goalie situation, decided that allen was the right pick from montreal.

Nashville Predators: Calle Jarnkrok

after doing art for and getting a featured article from the preds, corwin thinks they’re some kind of nashville expert. i originally had matt duchene here, but corwin said not him. their logic? they did art of duchene for their preds project, so they probably want to keep him around. fair point. so we went with calle jarnkrok. the logic behind that choice was simple: “calle jarn-kraken”

New Jersey Devils: Andreas Johnsson

i wish i kept a counter of how many times corwin told me “ron francis doesn’t care about your feelings!” when we were discussing the devils pick. they kept advocating for either nate bastian or mikey mcleod, but i would not stand for the superbuddies being separated. this is my kraken bait list, so my decisions. i asked a few of my devils friends for their input (props to sabs @jakejuentzel and h @bigmouthnatebastian), and in between the mild panic, andreas johnsson got tossed out. therefore, it’s mango getting shipped to seattle. does it further lower the average age of the devils? yeah, but it’ll be fine! the nhl could use some youthful chaos.

New York Islanders: Jordan Eberle

all of my kraken bait ideas for the isles came from the bardown breakdown podcast (a great listen if you like hockey and pop-punk/punk music!), since both hosts are isles fans. they had a few names tossed out, including josh bailey and casey cizikas, but corwin and i decided on eberle. like with a lot of these, right vibes.

New York Rangers: Kevin Rooney

i’ve seen two names pretty consistently for rangers kraken bait: colin blackwell and kevin rooney. is blackwell is better and therefore the more likely pick? yes. but kevin rooney is a former devil and also mocked tom wilson, so i voted he gets to go seattle.

Ottawa Senators: Chris Tierney

i don’t think i could name more than three, maybe four players on the sens, so i defaulted to The Athletic on this one. i have no idea who chris tierney is, but it works, so there we go.

Philadelphia Flyers: James Van Riemsdyk

@phillyjoel left some fantastic notes on the flyers kraken bait in the tags of my last list, giving me good evidence to tell corwin that for the last time, nolan patrick is not kraken bait. the argument i saw was that the flyers are probably going to trade patrick instead of giving him up for nothing and make cap space by giving away van riemsdyk or voracek. The Athletic liked the van riemsdyk pick, and corwin could live with it, so that’s where we settled.

Pittsburgh Penguins: Zach Aston-Reese

i honestly don’t have a whole lot of explanation for this one. another pick borrowed from The Athletic, corwin and i liked it, there we go. we considered going with kris letang, but the vibes weren’t right.

San Jose Sharks: Ryan Donato

shoutout to my sharks friend and amazing artist K (@18minutemajor) for their help! i originally had brent burns in this slot, on K’s suggestion (we had a fantastic exchange about brent burns befriending bigfoot). however, i ran into last-minute cap trouble and had to switch the pick. ryan donato came from The Athletic, but i think it’s kind of a fun pick. he’s been passed between a few teams recently, but most of what i know of ryan donato comes from the 2018 olympics (aka the first time i really watched hockey!), when he was apparently doing pretty well for team usa.

St. Louis Blues: Vince Dunn

thank you @powerblais (and the blues fans group chat) for your input on this one! vince dunn was one of the names on the list erin sent me, and The Athletic also had him listed, so we went with it.

Tampa Bay Lightning: Blake Coleman

thanks @heddy for responding to my out-of-the-blue message with some good input on the bolts! ana gave me some good suggestions like tyler johnson plus something else so they take on the contract, alex killorn, and ondrej palat. in the end, this devils fan defaulted to pickles. this pick is in the same category as tyson barrie- do i actually think coleman is going to the kraken? not really. do i still like the idea? absolutely.

Toronto Maple Leafs: Travis Dermott

borrowed from The Athletic and some other kraken bait predictions, because everyone has something to say about the leafs. corwin and i waffled between dermott and alexander kerfoot for this pick, but we eventually settled on dermott to seattle.

Vancouver Canucks: Madison Bowey

this pick changed so much in just one day. we originally had braden holtby here because original kraken bait, but then i ran into cap trouble. so i switched it to zack macewen, following a pick by The Athletic. but then i wanted one or two more defensemen, so i switched to madison bowey, who was the other pick from The Athletic. after all that, it seems like the right pick.

Washington Capitals: Vitek Vanecek

our third and final goalie! corwin and i had our eyes on vanecek as kraken bait for a while- a young goalie with promise and room to improve seemed like the right pick for seattle. we briefly considered tj oshie--he’s from washington state, and corwin wanted to upset caps fans (we were talking during the first round of the playoffs)--but ended up back with vanecek as our pick.

Winnipeg Jets: Mason Appleton

last pick of the list! not much to say here, though. it’s a pick borrowed from The Athletic, but we went with him over the other option from the jets because he has a fun name. to quote corwin, mason appleton sounds like “an apple pie in a mason jar on skates.”

and there you have it folks, the final kraken bait list! if you want to know the specifics, we’ve got 3 goalies, 16 forwards, and 11 defensemen, and the total cap hit is 76.4M. i’m pretty doubtful that this will be the actual expansion draft lineup, but we’ll have to see how many, if any, picks corwin and i got right.
