Tips for writing amputees: We don't wear our prosthetics 24/7
Amputees don't wear their prosthetics 24/7. Most of us don't even wear them any longer than we have to lol.
I only really wear mine when I leave the house. I know other's who wear theirs around the house still, but they take them off when they're relaxing, going to bed, showering etc. Most prosthetics aren't water proof so you don't want to take them into the bathroom at all when water is going if it can be avoided.
They're like shoes (yes even arm prosthetics) - they're good, they can be comfy if you get good ones, that doesn't mean I want to sleep in them.
Tumblr media
I actually tried that once as a kid because people kept asking my why at school, so I did it so I could give them an answer. They kept getting stuck on the blankets whenever I moved and my stumps swelled up so much during the night that the prosthetic got stuck on in the morning (presumably because prosthetics trap heat, so that plus the blankets meant I got hot, which triggered the swelling) . I had to sit with my legs raised in the air for an hour so it would go down and I could take them off. -100/10 do not recommend. I did get the day off school though so that was good at least.

Peeta's amputation
One of the things I really wish we'd gotten more information for in the books was the impact of Peeta losing his leg. On himself, on his habits, his reactions, anything really. We don't even know how badly he took it because around that time all Katniss was able to describe was him (understandably) being just happy to have survived it all along with her, plus he was putting on a brave face throughout the interviews, and maybe even in front of her so she would feel less guilty. And, I get it, most of the stuff I'm going to mention is just slice of life and maybe not that important as plot points, but I find them super interesting, for the perspective if anything.
Would Peeta's self-esteem take another deep dive after that? With everything happening during that time (moving out of his parents' house, his falling out with Katniss, being viewed differently by the rest of the district, living alone and possibly lonely, his romantic hopes crushed, PTSD from the Games, etc etc etc) he had a lot of triggers seemingly supporting those thoughts of being useless and uneeded and generally not good enough.
It's so frustrating to lose a limb and have to basically relearn everything from the beginning. How to navigate stairs, how to get in and out of a sitting position, how to balance and not tip over, stuff you've been doing esentially your whole life. And Peeta was athletic, he worked manually, he trusted himself to be capable of doing physical things, so that might have hurt a little more.
How about medical complications? From weird sensations to nerve pain, possibly phantom pains, everything related to his prosthetic leg (which, depending on the type, can get uncomfortable in sooo many ways, especially since he's still a teenager who's growing). And he was dumped at a place with basically no medical care at all, let alone anything specialized. Which, ok, was part of everyone's life in D12 already, but it must have still left a bitter taste... There was no one around to know much about his state, (exept maybe Ripper the liquor seller) and he had to make do on his own.
What if the Capitol had chosen his prosthetic more for aesthetic functions and less for functional? @whenthewallfell has a fantastic post about it, complete with illustrations!
Peeta's artificial foot getting tangled in the vines in the second arena and impeding his ability to run was no funny business. With prosthetic legs, there's usually different kinds for different functions. Your average foot people use to be able to walk is stiff and does a horrible job at supporting these sorts of activities. That's why equipment like running blades exists for amputees who want to be running and jumping. And you have to switch to that before the activity! Peeta apparently never got one. Even if he had, he would have to carry the alternative equipment around in the arena.
Speaking of that, even with a single type of artificial leg/foot, adjustments are frequently needed throughout the day. Most people as far as I understand remove the prosthetic to sleep, but also ball -and-socket models at least move around and need to be put back in place because it gets uncomfortable (sleeves -stump covers- sliding down, etc). The fact that Katniss never mentioned anything like this means that either he was actively not doing it in front of her or she just doesn't wanna talk about it (or maybe his leg is some fancy Capitol tech that doesn't work that way?)
Also, he's got to be hungry. All the time. He needs more food after the amputation, because the rest of his body is compensating for the lost limp and he has to use different muscles/nerves/tendons/etc. that are not designed spesifically for this. The same thing means he gets tired more easily. So Peeta being that active and training for the Quarter Quell while battling insomnia and nightmares with an amputated leg? Even harder than we thought.

Tumblr media
Ever since he got the new arm, even though he was doing physical therapy to try and help get used to it, Bucky's muscles had started to ache. He'd tried to ignore it, pushing through the work he did with you every day on top of his physical therapy that he did three times a week.
Today, his body was not having it.
He felt the bed dip and shift as you turned, moving to get up for the morning and he'd peeled his eyes open to watch you. He loved watching you in the morning - the way the barely rising sun would dance on your skin as you made your way to the closet, only leaving a small gap open in the doorway for Alpine who liked to be your shadow. The way you tried so hard to be quiet to not wake him even though he couldn't sleep past you getting out of bed in the first place.
He'd watch through the crack in the closet door as you searched through your clothes, searching for a specific pair of pants or a certain shirt. You'd eventually merge from the closet, clothed and ready to go down stairs to make your coffee. Lifting his arm to get your attention before you walked out, he smiled once you linked your fingers together, sitting on the edge of the bed next to him.
"Good morning, Jamie," You whispered against his lips as you leaned over to plant yours there.
Humming into the kiss, he couldn't stop from trying to nip at your lips before you pulled away, "Good morning, darlin'." He went to turn over, to lay on his back so he could really look at you in the morning light, but the second he got his elbow lifted enough to pull on the muscle, his back all but seized.
Letting out a long groan as he struggled to finish turning around, he could feel your hands hesitating on his skin, not knowing how to help but wanting to. Once he was finally on his back and could relax again, he let out the breath he'd held after his muscles started their tantrum.
"Oh god, that sucks," He muttered, opening his eyes to see you still sat beside him, your face coated in worry.
"Are you okay?" You asked, not sure where to rest your hands on him, not wanting to cause him any more pain than what you just witnessed.
He sighed before doing his best to shrug, "I don't know, it was just like my back was on fire for a second." He felt your hand rest against his chest and he reached up to grab it, lacing your fingers together.
"You stay here, I'll let the horses out and get them fed," You started, rubbing your thumb along his knuckles, "and when I come back, we're taking that arm off of you and working on your back."
He tried to argue with you, to say that he could still get up and help and that you shouldn't be doing all this work on your own but you shut him up. He got an earful about how you can do it, you've been doing it for years before he showed up on your porch and how if he tried to follow you out there, you'd personally drag him back in by the collar of his shirt.
So he waited for you.
He laid there, trying to will his muscles to relax but to no avail. In fact, it felt like they were just getting worse, mocking him as they held him captive to the bed while he could hear you outside doing morning chores thanks to the open window.
It didn't take long though for you to finish up and come back inside, ditching your shoes and grabbing lotion before making your way to the bedroom where you helped Bucky sit up. He leaned against you, clutching at your side with his flesh hand as you worked to get his prosthetic off, sighing when the weight of it dislodged from him and fell to the bed. You moved it to the floor, where it wouldn't get stepped on or kicked, and helped him lay on his stomach before you placed yourself over him. Straddling his hips and sitting on the backs of his thighs, you got to work, moving the lotion into his back and feeling the riddled mess of knots in his muscles.
Bucky swore your hands were magic, there was no way they weren't. Whether you admitted it or not, there was something supernatural about the way your hands worked the knots out of his back.
He couldn't help the groans that crawled their way out of his throat and slipped past his lips every time you got one of the knots to at least shrink, the feeling of his muscles finally relaxing made him feel like he was literally melting into the blankets under him.
He got lost in how good it felt, going into somewhat of a trance as your hands forced the knots away. It wasn't long until you had him on the verge of sleep, in the midst of limbo under your touch. Slightly humming as you lightly dragged your fingertips across his skin after you were done working his muscles. You could see the sleepy smiles gracing his lips when you switched to your nails, gently scratching his back in long strokes - one of his favorites.
When you leaned over and placed a line of kisses across the expanse of his shoulders, paying special attention to the scars on the left side, that was what pulled him back to the waking world. You rested your weight against his back, laying on top of him as gently as you could while wrapping your hands around his shoulders.
"Thank you, darlin'," he muttered into the sheets, relishing in the way you felt pressed against him, and noticing how his back hardly ached anymore. He brought his hand up to grab at your hand on his shoulder, giving it a squeeze as you leaned up to kiss just under his ear.
"Of course, you know I like taking care of you," You whispered, this moment seeming too gentle to speak any louder.
"I know you do," He hummed, pulling your hand forward so he could lay a kiss on your knuckles before sinking into the mattress again, comfortably pressed down by your weight, like his own personal security blanket.
He didn't know what he'd do without you, but he did know that he was going to repay you for this. Later. For now, he was going to allow himself this moment of reprieve for as long as you'd lay on him.

👀 Gordon amputation HCs? (If you don't mind talking about them!)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Y;HES
ok disclaimer: I am not an amputee! I am not a medical professional! I am not a prosthetic maker! I am not an engineer! I am simply an autistic writer and artist who has had a webcomic with an amputee character for 5+ years and I have done my research- but PLEASE if you like these headcanons and use it as advice for writing amputees I would also suggest listening to other sources, too!
The prosthetic:
-the arm ends about maybe like five inches under the wrist- which makes it just enough to get basic prosthetics going. Something a LOT of people don't consider is how much space you need to get robotics in there!
-This is the case for everyones(?i have yet to see otherwise) headcanons whether they know it or not but he specifically has a myoelectric prosthetic- which in itself is an EXTREMELY high-tech one! What it does is it detects electricity(YES! YOUR MUSCLES HAVE ELECTRICITY IN THEM!) from the muscles under your skin and amplifies them to be movement!
Tumblr media
I would actually HIGHLY suggest people do research into these prosthetics because they are SUPER cool but also not as good as you think they are! That being said:
-He cannot feel with it and has to guess how hard he has to grip something! There's research for prosthetics like this, but they're extremely faulty and- if anyone wants to correct me on this that's fine but I'm pretty sure- it would need Constant upkeep and repairs, ESPECIALLY if it could feel like a normal hand.
-at first he only used it when he went out and when he was doing something that might need two hands Because of this- he didn't really wear it much around the house. Not to mention like...he went from losing it, to an immediate gun arm, to suddenly having a prosthetic- whiiiich. Isn't good for the psychological part of a traumatic amputation! So yeah he didn't really like it all too much at first. Don't get me wrong it was a great tool and he appreciated it over no hand especially because he could actually properly articulate the fingers but...it also just. Was jarring.
-eventually, he and Dr. Coomer teamed up to make it more adaptable, and by that I mean a fucking pirate-ass thing where he could swap out his hand for other things like forks or electric screwdrivers or like. Anything. They like to get together to make new hands on the weekend. It's enrichment. With these add-ons he wore the prosthetic more, but sometimes he just. prefers taping a fork to his limb and calling it a day.
-^this hc is based off of adaptive devices that people make to work with whats left of the limb instead of trying to replace it! They range from other robotics to something plastic and/or 3d printed that just holds a pencil in place. From what I've researched they tend to be more liked than clunky fingers you cant feel lol
-IF THERE IS ANY ADVICE YOU GLEEN FROM THIS: please please please he doesn't sleep with his prosthetic on he SHOULD NOT SLEEP WITH HIS PROSTHETIC ON. DO NOT SLEEP WEARING YOUR PROSTHETIC- this also goes for just chilling out ect. Do you "chill out" in your jeans with a belt on?
-I've said it a few times already but I DO want to encourage other people who draw art or write fics that it's OKAY if his prosthetic doesn't work like a perfect, new hand and in fact is more realistic and something that should be done more often! It's very common to want to write off an amputees disability with "ok now they have a prosthetic they're all better <3" which isn't true at all and it really IS worth it to do some extra research- I might just have an engineering and medical special interest so it might just be me but its SUPER fun to learn things and it makes it more interesting writing how a character interacts with their disability!
The amputation/specifics(WARNING FOR TALK ABOUT GORE, OBVIOUSLY):
-I usually write/draw it being a combat knife because that's specifically what he mentions was used, but realistically it would've been something that could get through the suit itself. Either way, it was a really slow and painful process. Fun fact- while this is like...a debate in the medical field, the forearm is one of the most painful things in the body to break!
-Continuing from that last part, there ARE a lot of nerves in your forearm(ever hit your funnybone? yeah. yowch), as well as TWO bones. Arms and hands are SUPER complex so injuries are...just As complex!
-In the full VOD in act 3, Gordon mentions his suit cauterized it- which if you dont know what that is- it's basically Burning A Wound Shut. I can see this being the case, actually- seeing as the suit itself detects specific things in the body being injured- electricity IS a way to cauterize something. I want to point out that cauterization, however, is AGONIZINGLY PAINFUL and is SUPER DANGEROUS, even when controlled! He's SUPER lucky he didn't go into shock and die in his sleep lmao.
-Oh speaking of sleep. I said this in another post but it was sunset when they betrayed him- and daytime when he woke up. So he was asleep in the garbage compactor for hours.
-It's implied because he keeps talking about how he's still bleeding, but yeah even with the suit cauterizing the wound it wouldn't be fully shut. So he'd be bleeding a lot- ESPECIALLY if it didn't want to kill the nerves in his arm(which makes prosthesis easier in the future, via the myoelectric method I mentioned earlier).
-Because of this Tommy(and later Dr. Coomer and Bubby) had to make him make-shift wrappings and have him lean on them a lot. He lost a Lot of blood and by the time they found a fully functioning medical station it wasn't able to just...give him more. It could give him iron and such but yeah this guy has anemia.
-this is just a really funny note but in act 4 when he's leaving Darnolds lab in the VOD he goes "well I guess I'm able-bodied again!" NO YOU ARE NOT THAT IS GUNHAND. But anyways because of this statement, I think for the first few days after being without his arm hes like. oh im not really disabled though even though he is like. stereotypically disabled. sir
-Phantom pains and nightmares are. A nearly nightly combo.
-Whether they're triggered by something or not, phantom pains in general suck so so so so much. Just so much.
-He actually took a Long time to go to a doctor for his issues. Gordon. Buddy. Look Me In The Eyes. you can get medicine for your pain. you can take physical therapy. please . He wasnt even trying to like...tough it out like part of him was but it was mostly that he just. didnt know and forgot.
-it took him a really long time to trust Benrey touching where his hand used to be, but once they grew close post-rescas him and Tommy became Gordons go-to for phantom pain/itch help. slap my dumb arm thank you
Aaaand thats all I can think of at the moment! I might add on if I have any like. Sudden crushing things I need to say about him and my amputation hcs!

hello, just wanted to say that amputees don't sleep with their prosthetics usually, since it causes a lot of harm. Im sure u only meant good ofc, just wanted to let you know for the future. i loved your adventure time comic ><
yeah, this is actually the first time I’ve drawn him in bed with the arm! I very deliberately usually draw him without it when he’s just lounging at home. My reasoning is that this arm design (I only draw it on him when he’s an adult) is one that is hooked up to his nervous system in a way that cannot be easily taken on and off.
I’ve actually looked into it before, and the show itself usually has Finn sleep with his prosthetic??? So it’s possible the writers had a similar thought process with this arm

Zanzo Headcanons in No Particular Order
Autism + Cerebral Palsy + Hearing Loss + Quad Amputee (@treemintart was first on this, I just co-opted it)
Based on research I did on bionic prosthetics, I think it'd make the most sense for sense for Zanzo's limbs to be osseointegrated - contact between bone and a sturdy metal like titanium. Nub - metal rod - cybernetic limb snaps into rod and covers nub. (Peppermint and Chai might have this set-up too. And maybe Rekka.)
His cybernetic limbs are battery powered. They need regular charging to function. (There were a handful of instances where Zanzo's limbs shut down from his lack of attention. He's more distressed when it happens to his arms than his legs.)
There's an extra collapsible wheelchair stashed in a storage closet in R&D for this precise reason. And also one at Zanzo's residency, which I assume exists somewhere on the island.
He can feel pressure in his cybernetic limbs, but that's all.
Even if his CP only affected one limb or one side of his body, Zanzo would want all of his limbs to match.
Motor Stims: rocking, hand gestures, fiddling with neural implants and other objects
Zanzo has moderate - moderately severe hearing loss (40-70 dBA range) - difficult to hear conversation, vacuuming, alarm clocks, and other sounds of equal or lesser volume.
He turns his aural implants to a lower audio setting while he's working to minimize distractions. Also does this if he's overwhelmed. Has gotten startled from folks walking in while he's in the zone.
The Jojo villain oc cosplay is Zanzo's mask. If people deride him for being "weird" regardless, it's gonna be on his terms.
The pillow is custom. Zanzo anonymously commissioned an artist to design the cover. He hugs it whenever he feels lonely or stressed. Also sleeps with it.
He owns a pair of blue light filtering glasses. Sometimes he remembers to wear them.
Zanzo joined the internet in his early teens, haunting ye old chat rooms and forums. Published lots of fan art. These drawings often included a dual blade wielding green haired character.
He discovered anime around the same time and it changed his life. His main interest is in action-adventure and mecha series.
He watches anime subbed regardless of whether it's dubbed in English so he doesn't miss any dialogue. Because he's hard of hearing. (Also his parents used to yell at him for having the tv volume too loud.)
He enjoys playing action-adventure games like Metroidvanias and fighters. Occasionally breaks or hacks games for fun.
Gacha games are dangerous for Zanzo. He will be compelled to dump everything into getting the pulls he wants. Not to mention they distract him from other tasks. Zanzo had a few apps on his phone, but uninstalled them.
I don't think Zanzo's much of a pet person. In the cat/dog sense at the very least. If he did have one, I think it'd be something small and low maintenance - like a rodent or a lizard.
Zanzo first dyed his hair in his late teens/early twenties, inspired by his favorite fictional character. He stopped when Vandelay hired him, and picked it up again after his promotion, figuring Kale wouldn't care enough to chastise him about it. He was right. (This is dependent on Vandelay's stance regarding colored hair, which we don't have any canon info about. I imagine the department heads have more leeway in regards to dress code.)
I learned from the Hi-Fi wiki that the BRUT-1L has a "baby rocking mode". My proposal is that Zanzo intended this for stimming. Maybe he couldn't justify making something that specifically self indulgent, so he knocked two birds out with one stone by also making BRUT-1L a combat gardening robot. (Zanzo doubts his neurotypical coworkers would understand the appeal.)
Zanzo has a private YouTube/Twitch (or whatever the Hi Fi Rush equivalent is) account. Content ranges from playthroughs (and game breaking), reviews/analysis, unboxings, and showing off his various robotics projects. (Including ones that shouldn't be unveiled to the public yet.) He has a small, but dedicated following.
Does Zanzo know how to sword fight? Kind of. He understands the principle at the bare minimum.

@lumiidere Sure thing! I decided to do both Víctor and Victor just to make sure I didn't make a mistake.
Akira
he/they, cis male (for the most part; possibly demiboy), bisexual (male lean)
Dating Luca! Before he asked Luca out, he would usually just look at Luca with a deadpan stare with cheeks redder than his glasses. This creeped Luca out at first, but he got used to his awkwardness after realizing Akira was actually in love with him.
Bad at social interaction. Which is why they don't talk that much, due to them being a little bit socially awkward.
Doesn't like showing how he really feels that often. Only to people close to him or in extreme circumstances. Often, people like Misaki or Luca can somewhat tell how Akira truly feels about something even when he's not showing it.
Despite his personality being more catlike than doglike, he actually prefers dogs. In fact, his favorite color is brown because of his pet pomeranian.
TERRIFIED of insects. Akira's not really the type to run around and scream, but when there's a bug in the room they sure as hell will. Do not ask them about what happened to Oscar's late pet tarantula.
Usually wears jackets, except in summer. Doesn't really get hot that easily.
Ian
he/him, cis male, unlabeled sexuality/questioning
Homeless, lives in his car. Doesn't really have a place to live. Sometimes he stays over at his "friend" Víctor's house or his older brother Steve's apartment. Usually the former since Steve doesn't really like Ian that much.
Plus-sized. He's rather tall, so he's only somewhat overweight, but he's big nonetheless.
Snores VERY LOUDLY. Another reason his brother Steve doesn't want him in his apartment. Víctor doesn't really seem to mind this, as they usually go to sleep before Ian does.
Very hairy. Chest hair, arm hair, you name it. He almost never shaves.
He doesn't have any kids himself, but has earned the title of "dad friend" of his friend group despite them all being similar ages. He even makes dad jokes.
Luca
he/him, trans male, gay
29 years old, Birthday is May 17th (Taurus)
Amputee, since birth. Has a prosthetic leg, but usually wears long pants so not many people actually know that about him.
[The rest of these headcanons are copied and pasted from DeviantArt] Was an orphan until he was 10 years old, but adopted into a (mostly) loving family. His younger sister, Elisa, isn't the nicest and they get into a lot of fights but they're still on somewhat good terms.
Pacifist. Doesn't really like hurting other people unless he has to. His pacifism really helps some but sometimes hurts others. Elisa once screamed and asked Luca to kill a spider, but he just scooped it up and put it outside.
Takes a lot of naps during the day. Eepy boy.
His wardrobe is the most diverse array of clothes ether. He has masculine clothing, feminine clothing, unisex clothing, you name it. Most of it is green, but also has outfits of all different colors.
He paints his nails. Usually black or dark green.
Víctor (Wii)
they/he, nonbinary, gay
Has a HUGE crush on Ian. The only thing is, they're way too embarrassed about it to confess to him. He's afraid that he'll be looked down upon by his peers for dating him.
Autistic. Gets sensory overload in noisy places, and you can often see him wearing noise-canceling headphones at places like parties.
Very impulsive. They do a lot of things without thinking twice. They even got into a fight with Shinnosuke once. Víctor won, but still regrets beating him up.
Furry. He tries to hide this, but literally everyone in his friend group knows this. LOL.
Sometimes wears feminine clothing, but usually just sticks to casual clothes.
Loves the smell and taste of cinnamon.
Victor (Wii U)
he/him, trans male, questioning
He doesn't go outside very often. Usually he just stays at home unless he needs to be somewhere. He has a job, but his job doesn't require him to go in person.
OBSESSED with robots. Fictional or real ones. However, he's not very skilled in engineering.
Hiromasa
he/him, cis male, bisexual (slight female lean)
Despite having average proportions in canon, I headcanon him to have a tall and skinny body type. Somewhat frail, but don't underestimate him.
He only gets an average of 5 hours of sleep per night. He's barely making it through the days.
Coffee drinker. His favorite is just...regular black coffee. He'll insist he's not a caffeine addict.
Despite his mischievous grin, he actually takes things seriously...most of the time. However, he does enjoy the occasional mishap.
He plays the piano. In fact, he's more skilled at it than Rin.

Fandom Incompetence
Ok, am I the only one who feels underqualified to create fan content? Where do people get so many details from? I mean, every time (the spirits possess me) I try to write that fanfic, there are So Many Questions and they are all so stupid that it's embarrassing to google them, you know what I mean? I don't want the digital overlords to know that I'm struggling with all these little practical facts that living among the stars entails. Are people with cybernetic prosthetic limbs able to take them off at will? If so, do they sleep with them on? I've heard many amputees IRL don't. ALSO. Grievous has a bunch of backup limbs. Do others or is he weird? (trick question, yes he is) What's with the shower thing? Is there water involved? WHAT DOES A COUCH IN STAR WARS LOOK LIKE? (and before you say "oh, Padme's got couches at her place", yeah, but she's rich. Hers are opulent. What do normal couches look like? There is only one picture of a couch on Woookiepedia and it's in the "Legends" section, and it is spoken about in past tense, AND IT IS A SCREENSHOT FROM A VERY OLD VIDEOGAME about the HIGH REPUBLIC TIMES. Don't tell me couches have not changed since then. More polygons had to have been added at least.) Suppose the Jedi Temple provides those cool robes to the members, but. Does that include other clothes?? Where do they buy those? What about informal stuff, like sleep shirts? (Why am I thinking about this at 3 AM?) It's probably in the novelizations. Serves me right for not having read them yet.

Hi! I’m sorry this is pretty random but I don’t really know where else to talk about this and since I’ve seen you talk about disabilities a lot I thought I could ask for your opinion as well
Now, I’m not exactly disabled in the traditional sense for many I think.
I’ve had eye problems for years, only recently did I find out that it’s actually cornea dystrophy, a genetic disease not exactly treatable except it gets bad enough to need a cornea transplant (which usually only happens in older ages) My doctor said I don’t need that
My case however is also still a bit severe, I have to take eye drops mornings and evenings and even those don’t always help and I simply have to hope that I don’t wake up to pain. In cornea dystrophy your cornea doesn’t get lubricated enough and easily rips apart. This mostly happens in the morning… oh and how it happens… it’s an absolute nightmare at least thrice a week I’m ripped out of sleep by sudden severe pain in one of my eyes (it switches it’s always one or the other) it feels like someone is nonstop pouring acid in your eye and I always scramble to take pain killers, eye drops (which burn like hell on a fresh rip) and water, all in hurry because no one wants to understand how agonising it is and my boss also won’t understand that I WILL have days where I’m partially blind on one eye (everytime after an “attack” that eye usually sees completely blurry for a day or more depending on the severity of the rip and pain) sometimes the pain spreads over the entire side of my skull and my eye is crying non stop and my nose is also running bc of the sensation in my eye.
But no one around me wants to understand because my doctor simply said “just use eye drops frequently”. I do.. I use eyedrops, eye gel and eye patches everyday and still have frequent “attacks” and everyone treats them like they’re nuisances for THEM.
I’m hesitant to call this a disability, it does affect me and takes me out of commission before I scramble to lessen the impact in the morning yet I can still function “normally”.
I honestly don’t know where I wanted to go with this anymore…. I think I just want someone to know what I’m dealing with because neither family nor work are showing any understanding
Please feel free to ignore this and if you read this far thank you… You don’t have to reply or anything I think at this point I’m just venting and I’m so sorry to bother you with this
Please don't feel bad messaging me! I'm not a doctor of course, nor am I an expert in disability, but I don't mind having these conversations. Although fair warning, my answer will probably be just as rambly as you're worried yours was.
There's a lot to beeak down here including shitty doctors but first and foremost, I would absolutely call your condition disability, and I would even say that a lot of disabled people would agree.
Disability is a term that has many definitions depending on who is using it. Doctors, sociologists, government, and different aspects of the disabled community will all define it differently, but this is the dictionary definition:
a physical, mental, cognitive, or developmental condition that impairs, interferes with, or limits a person's ability to engage in certain tasks or actions or participate in typical daily activities and interactions
I'd certainly say that your condition certainly qualifies. Inability to see through one eye, even episodically, the need to rely on medications, pain that wakes you up or results in an inability to function. All of those are disabling. To say it isn't is like saying diabetes isn't a disability because all they need to do is take insulin, nevermind all of the other issues that come along with it. That lower-limb amputee? They aren't disabled, all they need to do is strap on a prosthetic leg! But it doesn't work like that. A disability is still a disability even with treatment or accessability.
Having good days, or even being "fine" a few hours after an episode, doesn't negate its impact on your life. It's an invisble disability, which is probably where a lot of people's shitty opinions come from. Other people can't see the problem, so, therefore, it must not exist. You must just be overreacting or faking or using it as an excuse to get out of work because otherwise they would see it. Unfortunately, it's easier for people to pretend disability simply doesn't exist. People around you not trying to understand or accomodate is ableism. It's also a willful and fundimental misunderstanding of disability. Just because some days I have the energy to clean, or you can see through both eyes, or a dementia patient remembers their daughter's name, doesn't magically make the condition go away, or make it impact your life any less when it does happen.
Your doctor being unconcerned(which is probably the wrong word. Uncaring? Unsympathetic?) is another problem but that one is deeply rooted in ableism within the medical community, and the common view of disability by medical professionals. Just because you don't need a cornea transplant doesn't mean you aren't deserving of care and sympathy from those around you. Even if they can't do anything to help, you still deserve that respect, and it's shitty that you don't have that.
The entire situation just sucks. The people are you suck. I'm sure they're lovely otherwise but this is obviously a part where they're lacking, and I'm sorry they're unwilling to accept that your conditon impacts you.
Edit: also feel free to DM me if you'd ever like to chat, or send me another ask

"you're the best." with Keegan!
With Keegan's mind constantly running, time slots being filled, and his management slipping through his hands, his mind was entering a foggy-like state. All the work he was putting towards the clan was currently in making Toppat's, or clothing for newer members, but it was becoming numbing. How did Ezhno handle this type of stuff everyday? This was only one day of constant business!
Giving a sigh, finally done with the day, his body didn't have energy for his normal chirping. His hands laced together with his fingers, left thumb rubbing his right slowly as he made his way to the door. He gave a sigh, pulling his hands apart and rubbing his eyes softly, before opening the door up and walking inside.
He looked around the room, seeing it empty, and just giving a defeated whine, before hanging his hat up on the rack and slipping his tail-coat off, as well as his shoes. The only thing that left him was whimpers as he moved towards the middle of the room, stopping for a moment. He took a look to Ezhno's bed, having to repeat to himself that it would hurt if he laid there, but, Ezhno wouldn't be too happy with-
"Kee? Are you alright?" Ezhno spoke, busting Keegan of his thoughts as the male glanced over. His hair was wet, prosthetic off, and sleep clothes on. How long had he been in the shower for? Nevermind, that didn't matter. Keegan simply shook his head, blinking a few times and going over to the couch to lay down on. Or, was going to.
"Here. Put these on." Ezhno spoke, tossing a pair of Keegan's sleep clothes over, a bagger pair that was Keegan's favorite. He gave a sigh, before grabbing them up and going to the bathroom to change. He didn't care about his clothes now being on the floor, not having the energy to pick them up and put them in the basket. It only took about ten minutes to leave the bathroom, glancing to see what Ezhno had done.
The couch was out and made into a bed, but some of Ezhno's things were missing from his bed and placed on the couch instead. Keegan gave a verbal 'huh?' of confusion, which caught Ezhno's attention. The amputee could only give a smile to Keegan. "You've helped me on my bad days, let me help you this time.. We don't have anything in the morning, so we can sleep in a little bit."
Ezhno then moved onto the bed, closer to the wall, before laying down on his back. Keegan knew this wasn't his idle sleeping position, but seeing Ezhno pat his chest with an assuring 'c'mon'.. Keegan climbed onto the bed and shuffled the blankets down, before covering both of them up and resting on Ezhno's chest. His steady breathing, the warn hug from his only, full arm, and the overall comfort he felt.
His mind got even more soothed when he heard Ezhno start humming one of the Mario theme songs, hearing the light flick off automatically, before nuzzling further to Ezhno's warmth with a smile.
"You're the best, Ez-o.."
"Sleep well, Kee.."

Hello! First, I just wanted to say I love your blog so much!! It's been very insightful for me (an abled bodied person) to learn about amputees and physical disabilities 🥰🥰🥰
I've been in the early stages of planning my novel and was planning on using cyborgs as a big part of the story. The more I thought about the robot limbs, surgeries, living circumstances, and so on, I realized they parallel so much of what irl people today go through. Which is why your blog is so great! I really hope I can capture a lot of the nuance writing characters because I'm already so invested into their lives.
As for my question (sorry if it's been asked before...) but do people with leg prosthetics use wheel chairs after they relearned how to walk? If so, is it an occasional thing? Hopefully, my question makes sense.
Thank you, I'm glad you're enjoying it! That's actually part of the reason why I use "cyborg" in my name - well the main reason was because of a joke but I kept it because it works as a parallel lol.
As for your question, absolutely! It's most common in double leg amputees, but I know of a few single leg amps who also use wheelchairs too. the reason why is that prosthetics aren't a magic cure-all like a lot of folks think they are and they do come with downsides. The more leg you lost, the bigger those downsides tend to be. For some people, those downsides are just too much, or they just don't want to deal with it, so they use other mobility aids like wheelchairs (lots of single leg amputees also use crutches too), even if a prosthetic technically seems to work fine for them
For me personally, I have a chronic illness. I don't know what it is but I know one of the effects is that I have very limited energy. Putting on my prosthetics (one above knee, one below knee) takes a lot of time and energy, and i'm usually exhausted by the time i even get it on, so it's just not worth it for me unless it's something really important/I know is going to be inaccessible for my wheelchair (and even then I usually just won't go lol). Even before my chronic illness manifested though, when I used my legs a lot more than I do now and would have very little issues with them at all, I still sometimes used my wheelchair because I have shit time management skills and just didn't leave myself enough time in the morning to get ready lol. My wheelchair was faster so I'd just take that to work/uni/school instead. Also if I just wasn't feeling good, didn't sleep well the night before or a host of other reasons that would leave me with just a little less energy than usual, id sometimes decide to just use my wheelchair instead to make things a bit easier on myself.
I also had a mate who was a single leg, above knee amputee. I think I saw him wear his leg like... twice? in the 5+ years I knew him. He was really good and confident on it, and had no real issues with using it, but when I asked why never wore it, he said he just didn't like how the socket felt. It, and I quote "comes up too high, I don't like how close it is to my junk". Which honestly, is fair lol.
Prosthetics can also be really hard on people's remaining joints, especially the hips, so they get harder to use as you get older too, which is another common reason for people to learn to use them, and then decide later it's not for them.
There's a lot of reasons, but a lot of the time it just boils down to they weren't the right tool for that person. Sometimes that can for big reasons, sometimes it can be for something really minor. It just depends on the person and their needs and wants.

putting some red dwarf headcanons below the cut bc im feeling kinda crappy and just wanna talk abt them.
please keep in mind that these are my readings of the characters and im in no way trying to claim these things are canon or the "correct" way of interpreting them, this is just how i see them personally. a lot of this is just rlly self-indulgent and involves me Projecting. if you don't agree with me on any/all of these, that's fine, i don't expect anyone to be on board with all of them tbh, just pls be nice to be abt it im sensitive
also just a warning. this post got very long bc i have a Lot to say lol
lister
gender: trans man, he/they
sexuality: bisexual
other: adhd (inattentive type), depression, amputee with prosthetic arm
notes: i headcanon lister as a trans man bc im trans masc myself and i find it very comforting to see him that way. it also fits in well with some aspects of canon, like his pregnancy in season 2. he's also just trans masc swag personified lol.
the bisexual headcanon seems to be shared by a lot of ppl in the fandom, and it's personally the way i see him. i think he has a definite preference for women but is still occasionally attracted to men, and (i am pretending that one scene in series 7 doesn't exist here lol 😒) i don't think he'd be repressed abt it at all. he's horny and not afraid to act on it
in terms of the neurodivergent stuff, i think adhd-i fits with his personality pretty well. i think that combined with his tendency to be depressed makes it hard for him to stay motivated and focused, and often means that he doesn't rlly take care of himself or his personal hygiene and seeks out short-term sources of pleasure like food, video games, alcohol and sex to keep himself happy, but can't rlly focus on long term goals. being the last human alive stuck in deep space definitely doesn't help. often his "laziness" is a result of his lack of energy and motivation rather than being an intentional thing. some days he just spend all of his time curled up on his bunk sleeping bc he can't find the drive to do anything else. he doesn't rlly WANT to be that way, he wants to have fun and actually do things, but it doesn't always happen and he has some rlly bad days at times.
with the prosthetic arm, personally i think they should've given him a prosthetic and had a proper character arc around him learning to cope with a disability back in season 7/8, rather than playing it off as a joke and immediately retconning it. i haven't rlly done much planning for this one yet but i just know i want it to be a thing. i think he would probably have a dope looking robot arm or something bc there's no way he'd just go for a boring generic arm if he had the choice imo. he would love to deck it out and customise it and put stickers all over it despite kryten telling him not to hehe
rimmer
gender: mostly cis man but maybe with a little hint of nonbinary-ness in there that he unfortunately refuses to acknowledge. he/him
sexuality: h for homosexual BABEY!!!!!!
other: autism, adhd (hyperactive), panic disorder, generalised anxiety disorder
notes: i think that it's quite possible that rimmer could have a little bit of gender stuff going on. when he projects his own insecurities abt gender and sexuality onto ace he specifically makes jabs abt ace probably wearing women's clothes in secret multiple times, which is equally as telling as his sniping abt ace being gay.
i also do headcanon rimmer as gay, but deeply, deeply repressed about it. he pursues women and kinda forces himself to believe he's attracted to them, but it's out of his desire to meet his own stupid arbitrary expectations of what he "should" be like, rather than out of any genuine attraction. ik a lot of ppl see him as bi, which is perfectly valid! but personally his pursuits of women read to me as something he does bc he feels he needs to do it to complete his image rather than something he does out of any real desire. he's also got enough internalised homophobia that it'd probably take decades of therapy to make him be normal abt it lol. rimmer wants to be the kind of man that he thinks will receive respect and will meet the expectations his family put on him as a child, and having a wife and children was always part of that image for him. he never really stopped to consider if that's something he actually wanted. i think he becomes more accepting of his own queerness as time goes on, but it does take time.
the neurodivergent stuff should be pretty self explanatory but im gonna rant abt it anyways. as an autistic person myself, i find rimmer very relatable. there are multiple scenes in the series where jokes and sarcasm go over his head completely, and countless times where he misreads body language and doesn't seem to get what kind of behaviour is appropriate for certain situations. he just seems to struggle with social interaction and bonding/making friends in general. he has intense interests that others don't rlly understand, like telegraph poles, risk, cars, morris dancing, etc. he gets pleasure out of organising and sorting things to a degree that seems pedantic to others, and seems genuinely confused when lister doesn't share his enthusiasm for cataloguing the ship's food stocks as a fun saturday night activity. he seems to enjoy routines and predictability, and gets upset when unexpected things happen. he also tends to get obsessive about small details rather than focusing on the big picture.
in terms of hyperactive adhd, it seems to me that rimmer often has a hard time slowing down and relaxing, and seems to need to be constantly on the go and doing things and generally fussing about. he also is self aware abt the fact that he has a hard time being quiet, and needs to talk more and at a faster pace than most other people, especially when he's nervous or distracted. as well as this, he often stims by rocking back and forth and jiggling his leg up and down (this also fits with the autism hc). he also has a tendency to procrastinate and seems to have a hard time studying, despite his attempts to convince people otherwise. it often comes up in the series that he'll get hyperfixated on doing something a bit arbitrary, like making an impeccable study timetable/schedule, or tidying, or sorting things into perfect order, rather than actually STUDYING, which is part of why he continuously fails his engineering exam.
the panic and anxiety disorder thing should be pretty self explanatory too. rimmer is clearly a worrier and has multiple panic attacks in the actual series. he seems to spend most of his time in a highly strung state of near panic, to the point where it interferes with his physical health. the way the canon narrative handles his anxiety, and his neurodivergent traits in general, is often a bit shitty lol, but it seems clear to me that he suffers from anxiety and panic attacks. kryten mentions that he's at a higher risk for those kinds of disorders due to genetics, but i also think that his childhood trauma and subsequent lifestyle (deathstyle??) definitely haven't helped him get any calmer lol
the cat
gender: trans man, he/him
sexuality: bisexual aromantic
other: autism
notes: most of these are more of a "because i said so" situation rather than things with canon evidence lol but still. esp the trans man one. i don't think the cat rlly has much of a concept of his own gender at all tbh, he just decided one day he was more comfortable as a man and stopped thinking abt it after that lol. i see the cat as bisexual bc i don't think he'd rlly give a fuck abt gender as long as ppl are hot and well presented, and i think he's aromantic bc throughout the series he doesn't seem to show much interest in a committed romantic relationship with anyone. when he does show interest in people, it reads more as purely sexual attraction to me than any desire to settle down or have an actual relationship.
i think he's autistic but it isn't always picked up bc his special interest is fashion, which isn't perceived to be a "typical" special interest. he seems very particular abt textures and colours, and puts meticulous effort into his wardrobe and often only wants to talk abt clothes even when ppl want to talk to him abt something else. to tie in with that, he doesn't seem great at reading social cues and often makes faux pas and accidentally insults others without realising it. he seems to generally have a hard time with empathy and understanding that others might not always share his interests and priorities
kryten
gender: nonbinary, any pronouns but generally uses he/him and is fine with this
sexuality: aroace
other: autism (again)
notes: ik that robots being nonbinary and aroace and autistic can be an unfortunate and frustrating stereotype sometimes, but it's just hard for me to see kryten any other way 😅. anyways, although im not aro or ace, i AM autistic and nonbinary and i think robots rule and i adore kryten so WHATEVER!!!! take it up with my nonexistent lawyer or something idc
in terms of being nb, kryten seems to only have the vaguest idea of what gender actually is, and i doubt that he really identifies as particularly male or female. he's most used to being perceived as male, but i don't think he really identifies with manhood. he seemed actively repulsed by male reproductive organs when he was briefly human, which makes me think that if he was human he'd probably suffer from gender dysphoria if he had to live in an amab body, but likewise he seems to have mixed feelings abt being perceived as a woman in season 8. in truth, i think he fits somewhere in the middle.
i see kryten as aroace bc he just never rlly seems to express any interest in sex or romance, even seeming confused by both concepts at different points. he IS a deeply loving and passionate and affectionate person at times imo, but it's always platonic i think. he just doesn't strike me as someone who would get any enjoyment or fulfilment out of having sex or being in a romantic relationship.
the autistic hc should once again be pretty obvious. he has a hard time reading social cues a lot of the time, and enjoys repetitive tasks that other ppl find boring, like ironing etc. he also just generally does and says things that strike others as eccentric without meaning to come across that way and jokes often go right over his head. he's autistic to me. ik that a lot of this is tied up with him being a mechanoid, but im autistic and i love kryten so im claiming him fuck you
kochanski
gender: trans woman, she/her
sexuality: lesbian
other: autism, generalised anxiety disorder
notes: ive seen a few ppl hc kochanski as a trans woman and i rlly warmed up to it. it also makes sense that lister would get a crush on her if he knew she was trans and they had "two of the only trans ppl on the dwarf" solidarity, like i can imagine it being part of why he came to like her tbh.
ik kochanski's statement abt her dave being gay and them just pretending to be in a relationship was immediately dismissed by lister and she didn't argue abt it, but i like to personally believe it's true. i think for a long time she struggled with internalised homophobia and didn't mind getting attention from men, esp bc it validated her gender as well. but in my headcanon it was always uncomfortable for her and never felt right, hence why she broke up with her lister before the accident (although the breakup was also in part due to her lister's struggles with his sexuality as well). much like with rimmer, i think kochanski had high expectations of herself and felt anxious for others to see her as a "real woman", and for a long time it was hard for her to reconcile being a lesbian with those expectations. but she gets there eventually.
at first i was on the fence abt headcanoning kochanski as being autistic, but i decided to do it. she's better at masking than rimmer is, but it still shows through in her very particular sensory preferences and attachment to comfort items and occasional misreading of social situations. likewise with generalised anxiety, i think she has a tendency to get anxious and worry abt things that other ppl might not care abt, and becomes stressed pretty easily. she tries her best to hide it, but she likes to be in control of a situation and know what all of the likely outcomes are, and when she can't have that level of control she finds it deeply upsetting and destabilising. she likes to have predictability and routine and takes comfort in familiar objects and sensations even when those things might seem silly or irrelevant to others.
holly
gender: nonbinary (imagine all of the computer related puns she could make abt this lol he would love it), any pronouns
sexuality: bisexual
other: n/a
notes: holly is so nonbinary to me. it's basically canon already considering that they switch back and forth between male and female presentation multiple times. i don't think gender means a hell of a lot to holly but she enjoys messing around with it and trying out new things. my personal headcanon is that she prefers presenting in more of a feminine way but the default presentation he's programmed with is masculine and she can't rlly be bothered changing it a lot of the time bc she doesn't rlly give a smeg.
likewise i think holly is attracted to men and women and everyone else. i don't think he feels sexual or romantic attraction that often but it definitely happens. they only ever really feel attraction to other ai though and aren't into organic beings in that way, and bc he hardly ever gets to encounter other ai her romantic life is kinda nonexistent lol.
i think holly probably has some Brain Stuff going on but idk what exactly so ive left that blank for now. if i come up with anything i will probably edit this later
OK THAT'S IT FOR NOW sorry this post is long as fuck. hope you guys enjoyed reading me ramble on abt the silly little fellows

So me and my mates are watching all the httyd films again when I had a thought. Hiccup is around 15 in the first film and 20 in the second.
How does growth and puberty effect hiccups stump and prosthetic? It must get painful at times as he grows. Then he'll need a longer prosthetic as his other leg gets taller.
The ideas for small whump fics is endless honestly
I'm not an amputee myself, but I have done a bit of research and picked up bits and pieces here and there.
One thing that I learned a while back is that lower leg amputees can't just sleep on their side without their prosthetic on, it makes for an uncomfortable position. So a tip is to sleep with a pillow between their legs. Which I thought was an interesting tidbit that I hadn't considered before.
But yeah, a growing body is bound to have an effect on any disability and Hiccup would need to get a new prosthetic any time a growth spurt leaves him with too big of a difference between his left and his right side. Lower back pain just from using a prosthetic is also a common thing.
And something people don't often think about; a difference in leg lengths makes room for slanted hips. And, at least in my case, it can lead to a minor case of scoliosis. So as Hiccup grew up, he would've needed to make sure his prosthetic isn't just suited for his stump, but also matches his right leg in length exactly. The difference does not need to be big to hurt.
There probably needs to be padding or something where the stump needs to go, too. Hiccup does a lot of standing, walking/running, and flying. He can't do all of that if his stump is just stuffed in this wooden cup.
Plus, all of that is probably just so exhausting on his stump and therefore exhausting on him.
That's all I can think of right now. But this is besides the pains and aches stumps just usually go through, phantom limb pain, humidity and other weather-related troubles, and just scar-related pains.
So yeah, growing up with his prosthetic would definitely come with it's own challenges and does make for good whump!

okay so i wanna put first thing first, I am not an amputee but I have watched videos about the struggles in prep for writing va.sh. ofc he's a bit different due to a ) being a plant b ) just how high tech his prosthetic is but still !! just wanna say I am no expert.
but something i find incredibly fascinating is that in tri.stamp va.sh arm seems to be able to relegate some form of sensation because we do see him go "eek!" when the arm is tinkered with. I assume this helps him with phantom pain ??? since the issue with that is basically the sensation of "hey this hurts. I cannot touch the pain" but va.sh would be able to trick his body, at least to a degree, into believing he can take care of it, just visually & then sensory too. makes me think he sometimes sleeps with the arm on to help.
the other thing is, the limb usually should not always be in a prosthetic & airing the skin etc is important but va.sh arm literally ends in metal to which he attaches the arm so either their technology is really, really amazing ( I still feel like that must be some form of discomfort tho ) or va.sh is actually in pain??? also damn the cleaning of both parts of his arm must be hell with all that sand...
I hc that he's def very careful with letting people know about any sort of pain he might go through, but especially his arm. the maintenance of it, experiencing phantom pain... he might be rather reclusive in showing those things. I don't want this to be some pain porn so i personally will go with the tech used on his arm being so good he can get air to his skin & clean it. but I also don't want this to be an ableist take on va.sh & him missing an arm is just. part of who he is. so the need to look after his arm, maybe with some ppl he's close to, talking about his pain will be part of my portrayal.

I've had a really strange dream tonight that woke me up and left me wondering for like half an hour before falling back to sleep.
In my dream I was like reading a Naruto Manga, I know that it was a manga because I saw the panels in my dream and not like a movie or anything. And I suppose it was during blank period. There was a boy who lost an arm during the war, and he befriended Sakura, and he got like a prosthetic arm, and it looked like the puppets that Kankuro or Sasori use. And by getting this arm, he got the ability to be a ninja as he learned to mold chakra to use that arm, and he was quickly becoming really powerful and this is where it gets really weird:
One day, Sakura finds him, with his feet cut off. She is able to reattach them with medical ninjutsu, and she asks the boy why he did that to himself, and he said that his prosthetic arm made him strong, and he thought he'd get stronger when more of his body parts were artificial like his arm. A few days later she finds him again with his feet cut off, and now he threw the feet to the river, so Sakura can't reattach them, and he gets puppet prosthetic legs too.
And then the dream gets a bit blurry as I started to feel uncomfortable already apparently, but it ended like the boy completely turned himself into a puppet just like Sasori but other than him somehow died doing so, and it was pretty bloody in my dream and I then woke up.
I really don't know what to think about dreams like this. I tend to have really graphic dreams that I remember very well and that leave me wondering for a while usually. I heard that writing down your dreams can help. It's really not like they are real nightmares. It's more like watching a horror movie or something like that. But sometimes I wonder where dreams like this come from.
I always had a difficult relationship towards people losing limbs as both my grandfathers were amputees because of complications with diabetes, and I was way too young to understand and probably was a little traumatized by watching my grandpa put on his prosthetic leg when I was three. So I still dream a lot about losing limbs. It's probably one of my greatest fears that it would happen to me or a loved one.
I just thought I'd write it down here, maybe some of you find it just as interesting as me. You can also give me your weird dream if you like. I'm really interested in how people dream! Maybe I'll post more of my weird dreams here in the future, too. My boyfriend once said, I should become a horror movie author based on my dreams xD
