Amityville: The Evil Escapes is a 1989 horror film in which demonic forces in the original house transfer to an ancient lamp, which finds its way to a remote California mansion where the evil manipulates a little girl by manifesting itself in the form of her dead father. Hey, sophia,
Can horror stories have a happy ending?
Can horror stories have a happy ending?
Your question makes me want to write an essay lol.
Can horror stories have a happy ending? This is a very controversial topic.
In my opinion, the answer is yes. There are various famous horror works with a relatively happy ending, such as The Amityville Horror, The Haunting of Hill House, The Shining, Scream, and The Exorcist. The protagonists escape more-or-less unscathed, but could you really call them happy?
Some horror manages to portray the next step for the survivors as one of growth and rebuilding, calling on the same inner strength that allowed them to survive the events of their story. In other cases, the defeat of a powerful evil becomes a source of hope, with the antagonist's downfall being savored. However, these endings often carry a mix of both joy and sorrow, as they are colored by the darkness and horrors the protagonists had to confront.

Hey, y’all, it’s Weird Wednesday! Where on some Wednesdays, I blog about weird stuff and give writing prompts.
Today: The Amityville Horror: Infamous American Haunted House
Welcome! Today we’re spending our Weird Wednesday on Long Island! Before the movies, before the book, before the revelation that it was all a hoax, the house at 112 Ocean Ave, Amityville, Long Island, New York, was the scene of a real horror: the murder of six people.
Ronald DeFeo, Jr., 23, killed his parents, two brothers, and two sisters with a rifle on Nov 13, 1974. If you’re familiar with the Amityville Horror story, you know of claims DeFeo was hearing voices that told him to kill his family. This part is surprisingly real— at least, according to his defense. The jury was unmoved, however, and DeFeo was convicted of mass murder. He died in prison in 2021. It is also true that motive remains elusive: DeFeo might have been after life insurance, and there was tension between him and his father. But nothing was ever said about evil spirits before the murders.
Of course, living in a house where six people were murdered by someone they loved has got to be a little freaky. But one family claimed there was a lot more horror going on. George and Kathy Lutz and their three children lived 28 days in the house at 112 Ocean Ave, starting in Dec, 1975. Interviews and a 1977 book by Jay Anson told the story of a terrified family who barely escaped with their lives. However, later fact-checkers found, well, no facts at all.
So we’re left with an odd contradiction: a false tale that got a lot of publicity for being “true,” but which remains, at its heart, a really good ghost story (which is why it led to many more books and movies). And here on Weird Wednesday, writing good ghost stories is our aim, so let’s see how horrifying the tale really gets.
Check out the blog post for the whole story and some haunted writing prompts, such as:
Maybe haunted houses/places also exist in another world, invisible to the mortal eye, where a character can go traveling. Maybe if you die in the Amityville house, you get a visitor’s pass for the Lincoln bedroom or Borley Rectory. Are there demons pursuing these travelers? Do the newly departed make friends with other ghosts? Can they ever pass back into the world of the living?

10 haunted house horror movies you must watch before you die
Tumblr media
Haunted houses have long been a staple of the horror genre, serving as chilling settings for tales of supernatural terror and psychological dread. Here are 10 memorable horror movies centered around haunted houses:
"The Haunting" (1963): Directed by Robert Wise, "The Haunting" is a classic haunted house film based on Shirley Jackson's novel "The Haunting of Hill House." A team of paranormal investigators explores the eerie and malevolent forces at work within the foreboding Hill House, leading to a terrifying confrontation with the unknown.
"The Amityville Horror" (1979): Based on the allegedly true story of the Lutz family's experiences in a haunted house in Amityville, New York, this film follows their terrifying ordeal after moving into a house where a mass murder had previously occurred. Strange and terrifying occurrences escalate, driving the family to the brink of madness.
"Poltergeist" (1982): Directed by Tobe Hooper and produced by Steven Spielberg, "Poltergeist" follows the Freelings, a suburban family whose house is haunted by malevolent spirits. When their youngest daughter is abducted by the supernatural forces inhabiting their home, the family must confront the horror within and rescue her from the other side.
"The Changeling" (1980): Starring George C. Scott, "The Changeling" is a chilling ghost story about a composer who moves into a historic mansion and encounters the vengeful spirit of a murdered child. As he unravels the mystery behind the haunting, he becomes entangled in a web of deception and horror.
"The Conjuring" (2013): Directed by James Wan, "The Conjuring" is based on the real-life investigations of paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren. The film follows the Warrens as they help a family terrorized by demonic entities in their newly purchased farmhouse. Atmospheric and terrifying, "The Conjuring" spawned a successful franchise.
"The Others" (2001): Directed by Alejandro Amenábar, "The Others" is a psychological horror film set in a secluded mansion on the island of Jersey after World War II. Grace Stewart, played by Nicole Kidman, cares for her two photosensitive children as strange occurrences unfold, leading her to question the nature of the events and her own sanity.
"The House on Haunted Hill" (1959): Directed by William Castle, this classic horror film follows a millionaire who offers $10,000 to anyone who can spend the night in a haunted house. As the guests encounter supernatural phenomena and grapple with their own fears, they realize that the house has a sinister agenda of its own.
"Insidious" (2010): Directed by James Wan, "Insidious" follows a family whose son falls into a mysterious coma and becomes a vessel for malevolent spirits. As they move into a new home to escape the haunting, they discover that the house itself is not the source of the evil, but rather their son's ability to astral project.
"The Others" (2001): Directed by Alejandro Amenábar, "The Others" follows Grace Stewart, a woman living with her two photosensitive children in a dark, secluded mansion. As strange occurrences unfold, Grace begins to question her sanity and the true nature of the events unfolding around her.
"The Woman in Black" (2012): Based on Susan Hill's novel, this atmospheric horror film follows a young lawyer who travels to a remote village to settle the estate of a deceased widow. As he uncovers the dark secrets of the woman's past and encounters the vengeful spirit haunting her mansion, he becomes ensnared in a terrifying battle between the living and the dead.
These haunted house movies offer a variety of scares, from supernatural entities to psychological suspense, but they all share a common theme of terror lurking within the walls of seemingly ordinary homes. Whether it's ghosts, demons, or vengeful spirits, these films remind us that sometimes the scariest things are closer to home than we realize.

To hurt God
To be raised Catholic is to be curious about what you’re not taught in Catechism. You learn so much about the light, but what about the dark? If the Father’s house has many mansions, what is inside the mansions that are only hinted at? The mansions whose doors remain shut but strange sounds sometimes escape? Of all the things locked away, it's the exorcism and all its shrouds mysticism that makes it ripe for a specific type of horror for the faithful and a source of fascination for everyone else.
In Amityville II: The Possession, Damiano Damiani mines the horrors that live in one of those forbidden mansions and the father that already resides in it. Before their new home begins to torment the Montelli family, they’ve already had to live with with the terror that is their abusive and impulsive father. The Montelli patriarch is so completely a vulgar and awful man who beats all his children and demands their blind submission to his authority but even he can’t compare to the demon that takes root in his eldest child, Sonny.
Yet, the true source of horror is the house that slowly tears at the cracks in the family, demands blood and refuses to let anyone escape. It's the house that desecrated an indigenous burial ground, kept hidden the abuse a family endured, was the site of incest and then put all the blame on the victim. It always had to be the house.
And then we get the exorcism. We learn how it’s meant to work and watch as it ultimately backfire because it wasn’t properly sanctioned. Even something shrouded in mystery like an exorcism requires paperwork. There are many terrifying things in Damiani’s film - the shadows, the way the weather morphs inside the house, the explosion, the practical effects and the way his camera glides, spins and, erm, thrusts - but its how his film subverts and violates the very idea of the family, shows how it fragile it is and how it can break both by forces inside and outside itself, and that nothing, not the church, not love, can save it in from true evil.
In Amityville II, we go inside a mansion in the Father’s house and we're desperate to get out.
