Alvin Taylor and his sister, Pearl, were kids when the City of Palm Springs, California began burning down their neighbours' homes. But they still remember the smell of the smoke.
"We would come home, and a neighbour's house would be gone - just burned rubble," Pearl Taylor Devers said.
In 1965, the City of Palm Springs began razing the Taylors' predominantly black neighbourhood to make way for commercial development near the city centre. Their father, a carpenter, had built their modest home from the foundation up. Their mother, a house cleaner, had worked for celebrities like Lucille Ball and the family of Amelia Earhart, and took the children to church every Sunday.
The Taylors grew up in an area of Palm Springs known as Section 14; racial segregation made the neighbourhood one of the few places where black people could purchase a home.
But that was before the fires. Every week a new home would go up in flames - sometimes with a neighbour's belongings inside. The Taylor family moved from home to home in Section 14, trying to outrun the flames. Each time their house was destroyed.
After a lengthy investigation, a 1968 report from the California Department of Justice deemed the destruction of Section 14 a "city-engineered holocaust".

Onlookers watch a "controlled burn" of a home in Section 14 of Palm Springs.
Nearly six decades later, survivors of Section 14 could finally see restitution after the California Department of Justice Reparations Task Force issued a sweeping set of reparations proposals last week.
The thousand-page report sets out 115 legislative recommendations to address inequalities among black Californians and ensure that injustices - like the destruction of Section 14 - never happen again.
Among the recommendations is a controversial proposal for cash payments of at least $1.2m (£943,400) to each black descendant of slaves.
Members of the task force said they hope their report helps the public understand the true cost of racism in California, regardless of whether the government ends up deciding to give direct cash payments or not.
The issue is highly divisive in the state. A new poll from the Public Policy Institute of California found that 54% of likely California voters had an unfavourable view of the task force, while nearly the same amount, 59%, believe the state should offer a formal apology for human rights violations and crimes against humanity on African slaves and their descendants.
The atmosphere was charged on Thursday, when the report was presented to the public, with some saying payments could not come soon enough.
"It's my money, and I want it now," one woman yelled.
Others said it was unfair to ask this generation to pay for the sins of the past through reparations that will ultimately be funded by tax dollars.
California Republican Assembly member Bill Essayli, who is Lebanese-American, said he opposes the recommendations of the task force.
"This whole thing of focusing on people's race and victimhood, [it] is nothing but an attempt to divide Americans and pit them against each other," he told the BBC.
Nothing untouched by racism
This debate is nothing new. Americans have argued over the idea of reparations since the end of the Civil War.
In recent years since, members of Congress have tried - and failed - to establish a commission to study proposals for reparations for African Americans.
While reparations efforts might have stalled on the federal level, local discussions have intensified, especially in the years since the murder of George Floyd. Evanston, Illinois became the first city in the US to give financial compensation for racist housing discrimination. But California's plan, if implemented, would be the most sweeping to date.
Dr Cheryl Grills, a clinical psychologist who specialises in racial trauma and was appointed to the task force, said it is necessary to acknowledge how the past continues to impact people today.
"Enslavement may have ended, but the ideology and the mechanisms to try to keep black people at the bottom are very much still with us," Dr Grills said.

Nothing is left of the Taylors' home but rubble. It was destroyed more than 60 years ago, but the lot remains empty.
It's a lesson the Taylors say they learned first-hand. They say the destruction of their home in Section 14 formed a core memory that would shape the rest of their lives.
Their father, a proud man, refused to abandon the home he built for his family. He tried in vain to secure a loan to buy the land, but at a time when most banks refused to give black Americans mortgages, he was left with few options.

Marjorie Taylor Greene had to leave the Trump arraignment rally after she was drowned out by counter-protesters.
During her chaotic arrival in New York on Tuesday, there appeared to be more members of the media than protesters present.
Ms. Greene was joined by the New York Young Republicans – a group with ties to embattled congressman George Santos, who also made a brief appearance at the rally before departing after being mobbed by the media. Ms. Greene was also met by counterprotesters holding their own “emergency noise demo” to drown out her “hate speech”.
The New York Young Republicans at one point responded with a USA-chant.
As clashes between pro- and anti-Trump demonstrators took place, the NYPD tried to separate the groups. Both camps were separated with NYPD barricades and community affairs officers between them.
Tumblr media
Ms. Greene took aim at New York Mayor Eric Adams, saying that “you send your henchmen down here to commit assault against people by making loud noises”.
Per Ben Collins of NBC News, the reason it was difficult to hear Ms. Greene may have been because a Trump supporter handed out whistles. He was apparently unaware that Ms. Greene was attending.
Tumblr media
Ms. Greene urged Americans to “take a stand” during her brief speech, large parts of which were drowned out by the sounds of counter-protesters.
She claimed that the government has been “weaponized” against Americans, adding: “I’m here to protest and use my voice and take a stand. Every American should take a stand. This is what happens in communist countries – not the United States of America. We have to take a stand against the injustice, the corruption, and the communist Democrats.”
Tumblr media
She continued: “They’re taking our legal code, twisting it, manipulating it, and perverting it into something it was never meant to be. Donald J Trump is innocent, this is election interference. DA Alvin Bragg is nothing but a George Soros-funded tool. He is a tool for the Democrats to try to hijack the 2024 presidential election. This is a travesty!”
Tumblr media
Ms. Greene soon left the rally and appeared on RSBN, saying that Mr. Trump “is joining some of the most incredible people in history being arrested today. Nelson Mandela was arrested, served time in prison. Jesus! Jesus was arrested and murdered”.
Tumblr media
She was slammed by New York congressman Jamaal Bowman, who told her to “go back to your district. What are you doing here? You’re here for politics, you’re here because you want to be VP ... you’re here for your own nonsense”.

6, 22, 23, 30!!
Thanks for the ask Missy!
Music ask game:
6: A song you've had on repeat lately
Right now I think it's gotta be the Glee cover of Silly Love Songs, but Memories by P!atD is close behind! (Not even a full month into January and I'm already skewing my Spotify wrapped irreparably 🤣)
22: a song you can't stand by an artist you like
....god. do I even have one?? Nothing's coming to mind or sticking out when I think of my faves, like. I haven't listened to all of Taylor's discography yet but I've liked basically everything I've heard and don't actively hate any of it (...or at least not her parts of it); I can think of maybe one tentative example for Rybak but objectively I haven't actually listened to the song cause I couldn't get past the thumbnail for it (it's a YouTube video exclusive cause it's actually a parody song); KEiiNO is chill, Pink Floyd, Def Leppard, Journey, they're all pretty much bangers only....
I think my answer's gonna have to be two songs that mostly fit the bill, in that I didn't necessarily enjoy listening to them and haven't really listened after like the first time I heard them, and that's either I Don't Wanna Live Forever by ZAYN and Taylor Swift (not because of Taylor's parts tho she sounds great, I just can't stand the falsetto Zayn is in for most of it, especially during the chorus--he sounds so sharp or like. Brittle? and it just becomes a Bad Sound Texture™ for me) or Viva Las Vengeance by Brendon Urie (yes its technically the lead single for the last album he released as P!atD, but considering the shit show that went down with it and the fact that I'm petty and didn't like the song when I listened to it, like, at all, enough that I straight up haven't listened to the rest of the album when I've listened to and own every other Panic! album... Yeah I'm divorcing this one from Panic!, sorry Urie this one's on you.)
23: a song you remember liking as a kid
Hmm... I could use House at Pooh Corner again (a staple of mine for musical ask games), buuuttttt.... Nah, actually I'm bringing in a REAL throwback: She Loves You, but specifically the remastered Alvin and the Chipmunks version from the 2007 Greatest Hits album (Still Squeaky After All These Years). I wore that CD out as a kid when I had a CD player, and when the players kept breaking and my parents gave me a hand-me-down MP3 player this was one of the first albums my dad added for me. Honestly most of these songs could be used (I was particularly fond of If You Love Me (Alouette) as well) but She Loves You seemed like the most solid option.
30: a song that makes you nostalgic
Breakaway by Kelly Clarkson (to date I consider this my Childhood Favorite Song, not to be confused with my Teenage Favorite Song or Early 20's Favorite Song, because no I can't choose just one favorite song, are you kidding??)

Republican Rep. Jim Jordan, a close ally of Donald Trump, vowed to defund the federal police over the indictment of the former president.
Talking to Fox News on Sunday, the Ohio congressman and chair of the House Judiciary Committee said that Republicans will look into defunding the agencies responsible for investigating Trump and ordering his indictment, which was voted for last week by a Manhattan grand jury over the payment of hush money to porn star Stormy Daniels before the 2016 presidential election. Trump denies any wrongdoing, calling the investigation a political "witch hunt."
"We control the power of the purse, and we're going to have to look at the appropriation process and limit funds going to some of these agencies, particularly the ones who are engaged in the most egregious behavior," Jordan said in an interview with Fox News's Maria Bartiromo on Sunday Morning Futures after being asked what his committee can do against the alleged "weaponization of government."
"So, the DOJ [Department of Justice] and the FBI?" said Bartiromo, seeking clarity.
"Yes," responded Jordan. "And what I'd really like, frankly, I'd really like for the government to stay out of the election process."
Jordan has long been a loud opponent of calls for defunding state police in the wake of the killing of George Floyd in 2020 and the protests that followed. But the Ohio Republican's support for law and order does not apparently extend to cover federal law enforcement agencies, which he argued in the Fox News interview have been "turned against the very same people they are supposed to serve."
Calls for defunding the police in 2020 and the following years have included both ideas about completely eliminating the police and proposals to reshuffle funds now dedicated to state police and limit officers' functions.
In January, Jordan condemned calls to defund the police, saying that the attacks against law enforcement discourage "enough good people" from becoming police officers. "We shouldn't have this whole attitude about defund the police," he said on NBC. "That's a problem when you're trying to attract the best to protect our communities."
The chairman of the House Judiciary Committee hasn't been the only Republican to call for defunding the Department of Justice and the FBI in the wake of the investigation into Trump.
Last month, Georgia Republican Marjorie Taylor Greene, another loyal supporter of the former president, called for "defunding some of these bad agencies—the FBI, the DOJ," saying she won't vote for legislation to fund the government unless these agencies' funds are cut.
"I've made up my mind. I will NOT vote for a budget that funds the two tiered justice system in America," she tweeted on March 17. "The Democrat controlled DOJ and FBI top brass are political and have weaponized their power against the right to persecute everyone with conservative values and aligned with Trump, but refuses to prosecute the left for their crimes. The Republican controlled budget must defund the two-tiered justice system and reign in the politically weaponized DOJ and FBI, or I will not vote for it."
Tumblr media
The investigation that led to Trump's indictment last week was conducted by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, which makes the probe a state-level case. But the New York investigation isn't the only ongoing probe into the former president, who is also being investigated for the possible mishandling of classified documents at his Mar-A-Lago residence and over his role in the Jan. 6 riots. Last year, Attorney General Merrick Garland appointed the Justice Department's former public integrity chief Jack Smith to oversee the DOJ's criminal investigations of Trump.
In early March, Florida congressman Matt Gaetz also called to "defund and get rid of" agencies including "the FBI, the CDC, ATF, DOJ, every last one of them if they do not come to heel" during the Conservative Political Action Conference, as reported by USA Today.
Newsweek has emailed Greene's and Gaetz's teams and called Jordan's team for comment.
