Sinners and Fallen Saints Update!

I was originally planning to have chapter 6 uploaded by last night, but it ended up being much longer than I expected (almost at 5000 words right now) and I'm only about 1/2-2/3 of the way through! I'm hoping to have it done and posted some time this week though! Until then, here's a small excerpt!

Chapter Title: Old Man Yaoi? Niffty No.

Consciousness came to Lucifer slowly; curled up in a space that wasn’t his large and luxurious bed, head resting at an uncomfortable angle on something stiff and solid. Slowley, he blinked his eyes open and let out a large, sleepy yawn.

This wasn’t his room, and this wasn’t a bed he was sleeping on. The King of Hell let out a miserable groan as he shifted in the armchair he didn’t remember falling asleep in; his fingers gripping a plush red throw blanket as he pulled it further around himself and curled up tighter, face now buried against the back of the chair. It didn’t matter that this was the most uncomfortable place he’d probably ever slept in, he just wanted 5 more minutes.

Somewhere through the few hours he’d been asleep in Alastor’s strange sitting room, he’d managed to get tangled in his robe; which in turn bunched up his pajama shirt around his chest and armpits. Between the 3 layers of fabric, his body was warm and uncomfortably clammy. Every part of this situation was not ideal; leaving Lucifer to wonder what he was doing with his life.

Bits and pieces of his conversation with Alastor last night were coming to him; and muddled with the delirium of exhaustion and the vague memory of the dream he had, he was questioning what was and wasn’t said.

Did Alastor tell him he was a vegetarian, and wanted to open up Hell’s first ever fully vegetarian Cat Cafe? There was this cookbook he pulled out of who knows where, full of vegetarian based recipes passed down from his grandfather to his father, then to him? A family tradition full of veggie frittatas and cranberry walnut pancakes?

Wait no, Alastor hated his dad, so the Cat Cafe was definitely a dream. Which was a bit of a relief because Lucifer didn’t want to debate the ethics of feeding cats a vegetarian diet.

Oh and also Alastor ate people, so that might have been his first que to the authenticity of the idea. Definitely nothing vegetarian about that.

Lucifer had to consciously stop himself from snickering at the thought that Alastor would be anything but a psychopath. The guy had a hotel resident fully bound to a chair last night for an interrogation. Even going so far as to play light jazz music for some sort of serial killer ambiance. But then again, Lucifer was also a participant of the incident, so what did that make him?

Damn.

The King of Hell cracked his eyes open once more, training them on the red cretonne upholstery his face was pressed up against. He used the knuckle of his pointer finger to trace over the dips and loops of the gold flowery pattern, the smooth embroidered design feeling ever so slightly different from the rest of the thick fabric. Doing anything and everything but getting up and going to his own room to get ready for the day.

His ears picked up the sound of a door opening from up above, followed by heeled shoes coming down steps, making Lucifer still his movements.

“Ok you’ve been out long enough.” Alastor chastised under his breath as he approached the chair the King of Hell was curled up on. The lights in the room flipped on, assaulting his tired eyes with bright warm orange light, “Come on, up up up.” Alastor commanded, clapping his hands loudly.

“Nooo…” Lucifer’s voice was muffled against the back of the seat.

“No whining like a child.” Alastor’s said as the radio on the bookshelf next to him turned on, and Katie Killjoy’s sarcastic voice began to prattle through the crackly speakers:

“—gas station caught fire due to the negligence of a dickhead smoking at the pump. Local crackhead, Morison Morris, says he was there just getting a .98$ coffee at the time of the event.”

“I guess you could say his morning was off to an explosive start!”

“Shut the fuck up Tom—”

Irritably, Lucifer peered over the armrest at the radio and grumbled, “Please stop.” And the radio did just that. Thank you Alastor for the fun new power he held.

“Oh and I bet you think you’re rather cheeky.” Alastor said in a mock-congratulatory tone, “But really, it's 7:30am and Charlie expects us down at 8am sharp for the start of today's activities.”

Lucifer let out a long, tired sigh, “Just 5 more minutes.” He complained, not really registering the words coming out of Alastor’s mouth.

“As flattered as I am that you seem to be so dedicated to staying in my room, you need to get up and go to your own to get ready.”

“Fine fine, I’m up.” He grumbled miserably as he righted himself, “When did I even fall asleep?”

“Some time around 4:13am, I believe. Mid sentence you passed out, I was very impressed.” Alastor went on as he watched Lucifer close his eyes and slouch back in the chair, the King of Hell frowning deeply. Alastor walked over to chair Lucifer was still seated miserably in and took the plush red throw blanket off him in one fell swoop, all but pulling Lucifer off the chair and stumbling on his feet, “You now have less than 25 minutes to get to your room, get dressed and be down in the lounge before Charlie starts the day off without you.” He stated as he folded up the blanket and set it on the other seat.

It finally registered in his brain how little time he actually had, Lucifer frantically searched for his slippers— “They’re by the door, now shoo.” Alastor grabbed the shorter man by the shoulders and pushed him in the right direction.

Lucifer jammed his feet into the slippers before swinging open the door to make his leave; and as he dead-sprinted down the hall, he didn’t notice their resident housekeeper by Alastor’s door inspecting the fresh new claw marks carved into the carpet. Niffty, however, noticed him running and completely disheveled in his nightwhere.

Her interest in the claw marks dragging back to Alastor’s door was now gone, and in its place grew gleeful speculation over what Lucifer was doing spending the night with Alastor. As her large red and yellow eye watched the King of Hell stumble over his slippers, almost face planting in the hallway before catching himself again and continuing his sprint, she let out a devious giggle before running back down the other way and crawling into an open air vent she’d scurried out of originally. Her quickest form of transportation.

I'm reuploading this because Tumblr nuked the first one and didn't put it on any single tag with no explanation so I made some minor changes by adding a few things and taking them away! This got deleted like 2 times and I was just about to give up but three times the charm ig. Also, I hc that all or most of the harbingers have at least 1 borzoi or any other "royal" breed, so that feeds into this plot. Forgive for the poor writing, I am doing this on a laptop which I am not familiar with

They say don't bite the hand that feeds but that's bullshit, no one deserved a fate like this. You were a no-one. You only worked as a weapon craftsman in Snezhnaya. Mostly making or repairing weapons for fatui soldiers with an occasional avid traveler, for fairly cheap.

You lived well, mora wasn't an issue most of the time, but you would doubtlessly be working for most of your life before you could retire. So, what an immense surprise it was when one of the fatui harbingers pops into your quaint shop one day.

The 11th of the harbingers waltzing through your door with two soldiers behind him. A smile that held no hint of friendliness in it. His eyes scanned over the premade weapons before landing on you working behind the counter. Upon hearing someone approaching you to go to leave your work and greet them when you stop midway. The smile on your face drops instantly into a worried frown as you realize who stands before you.

He had requested you to fix his bow and ordered a few other smaller orders of weapons. You thought that would've been it, you would just fix the bow and never have to work with the unsettling harbinger but no. He came back a week later, then the next week, and the next. Each time he would try to prolong the time you two talked.

You thought barely of it, of course, it was weird but were you really going to question the intentions of a harbinger. To you, he just had a brief case of puppy love that would pass.

Well, it didn't. It got worse, way worse. He would start to bring you bags of mora, flowers, and other gifts. You always rejected them not wanting it to seem like you were reciprocating his love. For one, you were already married to a kind-hearted man, and second whatever he had for you clearly wasn't healthy.

For a while, you put up with his weird attitude but then he started to get way too close in your personal space. His touches always lingered a little longer than comfortable, his dead-like eyes boring through your head, he was snappier, and would start to get mad when you rejected his presents.

It reached a boiling point when he grabbed your waist pulling you flush against him. In an instant your fist connected with his jaw as you weaseled out of his grasp. Reaching for a nearby weapon that is laid on your sketching desk. Childe's guards were ready to strike but quickly put their weapons down when their boss waved a command.

With a nod, they backed down and returned to idle stand behind him. When you looked back at him you expected to see an angry look on his face but instead, he looked excited even happy. The feeling of wanting to vomit arises in your throat, but you still stand firm.

"Plea- Please leave now." With a shaky voice, you command the barbaric man and his guards to leave. To your surprise, he listens. He turns with a smug grin and a wave out the door.

And for the second time, you were foolish. You thought again that maybe he would leave you alone but no. Although he didn't show up in your shop as much, he still sent fatui spies to your shop, you would find gifts wrapped in the finest paper at the steps of your house. The gifts from him never got opened you just threw them aside in the trash. Wanting nothing to do with the ginger haired harbinger.

So, what broke the camel's back? You really didn't know. Maybe he got bored, impatient, frustrated, jealous, or whatever. But something snapped inside him that day. From the beginning the day left off, just the air felt stuffy. You left your spouse at home with a goodbye kiss as you rushed off to open your shop. That day no fatui agents came in, only a few adventures in need of weapons. The snow falling outside felt heavier, and time felt as if it went 10x slower.

Finally, the time came when you could go back home, so with the twist of a key, you locked your shop and trekked your way back home through the inches of snow. But when you got to your house the door was wide open. The handle that was ripped off the door now laying in the snow. Dread filled you as you carefully stepped into the house with your polearm clutched in your hand.

What awaited you flipped your life upside down. In your living room sat Childe in your loveseat with your dead spouse laying on the blood-drenched rug. The smell of iron leaks into your senses, making you gag at the horrendous aroma.

His eyes snap up to yours, and that same ominous manic smile adorns his face. "Welcome home, my love!" He cheered as he stands up to hug you, his arms spread wide. There was no comfort in his voice, it made your ears want to bleed, like nails on a chalkboard.

After the shock wore off the fact that the love of your life had been killed registered in your brain. You felt sorrowful but another emotion gravely overshadowed that. Anger, rage, and hatred bubbled up covering all the sadness you felt. Animosity for Childe was all you felt at that moment.

The grip on your polearm tightens, the sight of him getting closers acting like he hasn't done a single bad thing. It makes you fucking pissed. But you knew there was no way for you to beat him in a fight, you couldn't go up against a harbinger and win. So, you did the only thing you could think of, letting your flight or fight take control.

Your pyro vision lights ablaze, your polearm swings out in front of you creating a wall of fire blocking Childe from getting to you. Without taking a second glance you rush out into the blizzard-like weather. Through the howling winds, you hear him yelling after you to come back and stop running but you don't even when your lungs feel like they could collapse or when your body feels so numb.

The goal was to get out of Snezhnaya because you couldn't dare to look at that place anymore. The mere thought of stepping foot into the city made you shiver. You don't really know how long you have been walking maybe a few hours? Frozen snow clings onto your clothes as you cling onto yourself. The storm was getting really bad, you could barely hear nor see anything. Droplets frozen onto your lashes weighing them down, your eyes feeling droopy. For a while you couldn't hear anything till the sound of dogs barking makes your heart drop.

It was the sound of at least 3 dogs getting closer to you rapidly. You were so exhausted that you didn't even try to speed up, you just hoped that they weren't after you, but nothing was ever on your side was it.

Flickering pain shoots up your arm as you twirl around to see a dog. A Russian wolfhound of course. You just wanted to cry at that point, the only people at this point who were allowed to own those breeds were royals or the harbingers. The guess was that these were Tartaglia's hunting dogs. If they were his then he would follow the steps of these dogs.

The dogs latched ahold of both your arms, the third grabbing onto your back and pushing you down into the frigid layers of bloody snow. You couldn't take it anymore the fatigue and scalding pain overtaking all senses. Black splotches start to cover your vision, ringing in your ears almost blocking out the sound of snow crunching around you.

Before your vision could go out completely a hand grips your hair pulling you up to meet the face of Tartaglia, his unnerving smirk still resting on his freckled face. "You thought you could run darling? Your fucking mine" was the last thing you heard before your head gets thrown into the snow below again and darkness takes you.

Fun fact for those who made it this far, but I really love borzoi! I love sighthound in general and have researched them a lot, but borzoi has got to be my favorite. Maybe I'm biased because I have a little borzoi puppy, but they are such a goofy breed, and I would never regret getting one.

My Top 10 BLs of 2022

I also chose 22 runners up for 22, but the top 10 includes reviews etc.. These are IN ORDER, which means I made it really hard on myself. Ready?

1. Semantic Error (Korea Viki)

The only 2022 BL that earned a 10/10. Korean hits peak KBL and lucked into killer chemistry. It’s a deadly combination. Sexy older boy discovers pouty younger boy has outed him as a slacker, starts out bullying him, accidentally falls madly in love instead. Korea hits it entirely out of the Parks by doing a university BL with everything we expect from BL just done exactly right. Korea's signature quality executed perfectly with added bonus good story, great pacing, stunning visuals, and fantastic chemistry. You cannot ask for more from a BL, let alone a KBL. Full squee here.

All three of these next three actually hold the #2 spot in my heart depending on how I feel that day.

2. Old Fashion Cupcake (Japan Viki)

This show had me from the moment they broke the egg yolk with the chopsticks in the opening credits. It’s about a younger man with a long cherished crush on his boss (ten years older and going through a mid life crisis) who decides to save and seduce said boss with pancakes. It’s wholesome, comforting, sexy, and a very necessary narrative about still having hope, interests, and openness to affection at any age. It’s a stunningly filmed late-in-life coming of age/queerness story packaged in a subtle critique of expectations around masculinity, love, and loneliness... and it’s beautiful. Full review.

3. Minato's Laundromat (Japan Gaga)

AKA Minato Coin Laundry AKA Wash My Heart! AKA Minato Shouji Koin Randorii AKA Minato Shouji Coin Laundry

A classic age gap romance where a high school student pursues the man of his dreams (who runs a laundromat). This BL is so steeped in yaoi tropes and archetypes, not to mention a typical romance arc, that it will overload some, but those of who love this genre for its DNA will adore it. It made me very happy because it did everything I want a BL to do - there’s not much more I could ask of a BL than this. It’s the closest Japan has come to perfect live action yaoi since Seven Days (and I never make that comparison lightly). Squee watch-along here.

4. Takara & Amagi (Japan Gaga & Viki)

AKA Takara-kun and Amagi-kun AKA Takara-kun to Amagi-kun

I gnawed on my knuckles and squealed a lot with this show. Reserved cool kid who must learn to communicate to keep the tiny disaster nugget he’s madly in love with. It is beyond charming: soft and gentle, packed with cuteness and high school angst, thirst, & yearning. Did anything actually happen? No. Was it emotionally tense and paced well enough for me not to notice? Absolutely. Was there plot? Not really. Did I enjoy the hell out of it, anyway? Oh yes. Full review.

5. Cherry Blossoms After Winter (Korea Viki)

Korea took on early Japanese sweet yaoi but gave it their signature softness and precise production with a STUNNING color palette (beautiful pastels, sun-saturated over-exposure), manga framing style, some traditional BL character archetypes, that tiny edge of bullying roughness and out-of-control seme, plus FINALLY a palatable take on the stepbrothers trope and it was, in a word, classic. Sophisticated and understated CBAW is not slow, it’s just subtle. It's dream-like and atmospheric, as if the whole thing took place under cold water on a warm spring day. Is there plot or peril? Not really. Do we care? Also, not really. Look, I can’t help it, I’m old school and so is this show. I grew up reading sweet yaoi, and this was THAT YAOI just on my screen. There’s no objectivity with me and this show. It’s a beautiful pastiche and I loved it for how it made me feel and what it reminded me of. It’s not flawless, but it is a wonderful experience. 6. Bad Buddy (Thailand YouTube)

This was GMMTV’s flagship BL and it started 2022 on a BANG (okay no actual banging but you know what I mean), starring heavy hitters Ohm & Nanon in a pitch perfect university Romeo & Romeo masterpiece that will give you domesticity meets pain whiplash throughout and jet lag at the end. Some of the friendship and family dynamics are overworked, but it has great production values, killer acting, and some conscious effort to correct for half a decade of Thai BL’s anti-queer mistakes. Full review.

7. Blueming (Korea iQIYI)

It’s a tiny bit dark and a tiny bit bittersweet, almost too honest to a university experience and first love for BL, but if you want your mind ever-so-slightly messed with and your intimacy hellishly sweet, this BL will do it for you in a coldly distant manner, while bitch slapping you with self worth issues. I wasn’t into it at first, but the leads are solid and by ep 5 it got really good, becoming a narrative about self discovery meets understanding and accepting others people’s flaws without hurting them. Ultimately we witnessed two characters maturing because of each other and their mutual affection, without that affection becoming the conflict point. Instead, tension was built around other aspects of identity, popularity, and self-worth. While production values were a touch lower than usual for Korea, Blueming included decent kisses and other forms of intimacy and a satisfying ending plus there’s judicious and very elegant use of tropes, this is a great BL. Full review.

8. My Ride (Thailand Gaga)

Thai BL grew up with this pulp (the first ever to make my end of year top 10). It’s a truly lovely and special little show featuring the extremely rare pairing of sunshine/sunshine (AKA a cinnamon roll couple) plus mature explorations of relationships using one of the softest, sweetest and most innocent friends to lovers vehicles. Kindly, overworked doctor meets broken-hearted motorcycle taxi driver in an “other side of the tracks” slow burn romance. The support cast is excellent, making for great friendship groups and family dynamics. With honest queer rep that adds to, but doesn’t impede, the story, and genuine conversation about the nature of class, wealth, and classism, not to mention communication, honesty, and respect for boundaries, you can’t go wrong with this show. In other news, I am a sucker for a single dimple. Full review.

9. Not Me (Thailand YouTube)

GMMTV gave us a dark disestablishment narrative (in a time of civil unrest) with established queer award-winning director Anucha and starring the biggest guns of BL, OffGun and THIS WAS AN AMAZING THING to get to experience at the time - nerve racking but remarkable. But was it ACTUALLY BL? It certainly has a lot of BL elements, but in the end romance was not what this show was about, or even what it was genuinely trying to be as a performance piece. Still a remarkable moment in Thai cinema, certainly worth your time. Don’t worry, it all ends happily. Full review.

10. My Tooth Your Love (Taiwan Gaga)

From the producers of We Best Love, earnest dentist hottie with sad eyes who worries too much is smitten by an adorable sunshine neurotic bar owner with serious anxiety issues. They fall madly in love while courting each other with food, plushies, and naps. Then, shocker, talk about their feelings and try to actually sort out their problems so they can have an adult relationship. Bonus crumbs = 18 year old poor little rich kid in mad crush with a much older man. I really enjoyed this show, it had a fun premise, killer dialogue, there was a solid lead pair with charming chemistry, soft flirtation, and delightful smiling kisses and stinkingly cute domesticity. All that said, I wasn’t wild about some of the darker themes it explored, even though it did a good job with them. And while the crumbs and sides were v adorable they were underused. In the land of May/December, baby boy kabedon is my kryptonite! Why so little of them? Kabedon is My Krytonite = also the name of my indie band’s first single.)

Absolute BL 2, like ABL1 is technically unrated since I consider them mockudramas not true BL. But both are greatly beloved by me and deserve a mention.

Just a note my average rating for all BLs each year (6/10) - over the years I have been watching the mean has not changed. So for me, at least, Asia continues to produce about the same amounts of beloved, average, and crap. In other words: more BL this year (by a lot) has meant that there is more BL I love (and give high ratings too), but it also means there is more BL I dislike (and give low scores to).

Streaming Platforms

The platform that hosted the most of my top rated 32 shows was, actually, YouTube with 10. Viki was a close second with 9, equal if you add in ABL2. It was Choco Milk Shake that made the difference (a KBL on YT? cray cray).

Gaga scooped (or shared with Viki) many of my top 10 favorite BLs though, so whoever selects and curates over there shares my taste.

Still, official recommendation as of 2022 is that if you only choose one streaming service to pay for? Viki is the best subscription platform for new BL. However, if you can get it there with ads, and really are strapped for cash? Go for Gaga.

GOD i am also so fucking INSANE for that dynamic you have no idea. it was part of the reason i wrote alivemanor actually!!! home is where the heart is and in alistair's case both of those words are synonymous with wainwright. god. turns into an oyster

another part of them i love is. how sure you don't see much of that in canon but you can still very much see that they communicate and care for one another. yeah yeah toxic yaoi is cool and all but 1 many of y'all overestimate what toxic means 2 fuck that noise i want old men who are very different from one another but love each other on PURPOSE!!! AND WITH EFFORT!!! AND WHO KNOW THE VALUE OF COMPROMISE!!!!! FUCK [EXPLODES]

one particular thing also makes me go insane and that is. the Parallels,. at the end of the eden-6 arc when they get unfrozen wainwright's FIRST THING is to ask "Alistair! Alistair, are you all right?" WITHOUT REGARD FOR HIS OWN SAFETY (HE GOT SHOT TOO). and al's response is "Me? What about you? You were shot just as much as I was". then at the end of guns love and tentacles right after you kill the heart alistair's FIRST THING he does after the comes loose is to run to his beloved screaming "Winny! How Cyberbullies ruined my life.

My name is Jasmine Smith and I need your help with this. This is my cyberbullying story since 2011 and that happened to me in my entire life. So now I’m writing this whole story rest of my thoughts and depend on it. Back in 2005 ever since when I was 15, I searched the website called DeviantArt. It had anime, cartoon, space, nature, and yaoi. Yes, I love yaoi. Everyone had drawn so many things, I was astounded. I hadn’t joined the DeviantArt yet because I had MSN TV 2, so I looked at this site; I like anime were Full Metal Alchemist, Beyblades, Digimon, Tenchi Muyo, Sailor Moon, Ah! My Goddess and Naruto. (Fuck, yeah. Naruto is the best.) I wish I could join the DeviantArt and asked them how did they do that. I knew I was an artist when I was young and I also wrote a story. I remember I wrote a letter to Warner Bros. that I wanted to be on the movie. Yes, it was my dream is to become an entertainer. In 2009, I joined the DA after graduated high school and began reading comics to get my mind off the evil teacher named Ms.Baker. One night, I was reading Naruto comic. Nekoni never owned Naruto, it belonged to the creator. Once I finished Naruto comic, I asked Nekoni how he was doing his comic and artwork. And he told me he had Cintiq 21ux and Photoshop. I think it was my first time to join this DA and I realized I didn't have a drawing tablet. So I thanked him for the info and went to the job site. After I finished the job site, I went back to the DA and reading some more comics before I went to sleep. I had read Naruto, Sailor Moon, FMA and more. I was looking for a last comic before I had to go to sleep, in a few seconds later, it caught my attention. I obtained this strange-looking page like it was a real anime. It was PPGD which I hadn't seen or heard of this before. So I took a look and read that. It made me wonder who made it. They said it was Bleedman who created PPGD, Grim Tales and Sugar Bits. I told them I've never even heard of that. And they said those comics were created in 2004. That was 5 years ago. In September, I was packing my stuff and be ready to go to college starting as a freshman. I bid my farewell to my family and drove my car. I had arrived the college and entered my dorm. I had a new Japanese friend named Takari and she gave me Manga, trading cards, video game, and stuff. I was stoked. I asked her to play a game together. This evening I was doing studying my algebra and listened to music from my iPod. I was done studying and went to my laptop, I first visited my DA account and I got a message. So I opened it, it was an icon that that Boomer from RRB eating pies and username BeeAre. I asked him, "Do I know you?" He said he was a writer of PPGD. I was feeling suspicious about this guy. Could this be...? Nah. I went to YouTube to watch some show or something. In March of 2011, I was at the library doing computer (which means my laptop had been broken down), I was looking for a job online to get a new laptop and a drawing tablet. I had applied Pizza Hut, 7-11, Starbucks, and McDonald's. After my applications were submitted, I knew I had plenty of time before going to Physics class. So I went to DA and started collecting Legend of Zelda, BloodRayne, Blade, Naruto, Spawn and more. I was getting bored a little. So I asked Seiryuga when did the 3 boys come in the comic. I was about to log out my DA account, and then the message had instantly sent. It's a message from the girl and she asked me what was with me and the RRB (Rowdyruff Boys). I replied to her they came to the recuse. And then I logged her and to physics class. The next day, I finished the art class and went to the cafeteria meeting with my dear friend Takari. We were eating our lunches and doing conversation. I fished my pocket for my phone, I surfed the internet and went on DA. I got a message from yesterday. I opened it up and read this. However, it was a rude and offensive letter and she said that was just sick. I thought, "WTF?" Takari asked, "What's wrong?" I said, "Something's not right. I didn't say anything like this. What time is it?" She looked at her watch, "12:55." It was five minutes before going to the history class, I had to pick up my stuff and told her I would be right behind her and rushed to the library real quick. As I got in the library, I quickly logged on my DA account and replied to her what the hell was she talking about. And I pressed the submit button, but suddenly there was access denied on the screen. "Huh? Access denied? That can't be right, I just sent the guy a message." I said quietly. I tried to type it and replied again and again but to no avail. I then discovered Seiryuga's profile and to my shock, I was blocked by this guy! I had never been blocked by someone before! I was shocked when this happened. He might have wireless on the go during his vacation when I wasn't around yesterday. And the bell rang jarred my nerves, it was time for me to go to history class. I cursed under my breath, I logged off, quickly grabbed my stuff and ran to the history class. Takari was sitting there and waiting for me. As I got in the class on time. I sat beside her and hung my head and cursed breathlessly. Takari asked me what happened. I told her I got blocked by Seiryuga. How could this happened? On April of 2011, I had decided to go to Snafu-Comics.com and created an account. Now there would be no problem. But suddenly I got attacked by cyberbullies for calling me twifag, troll, slut, retarded, and they said my arts suck. And Seiryuga said he didn't remember me and cursed at me with terrible foul language. I was shocked and hurt that he would NEVER cursed at me in the first place! And BeeAre just asked some fucking stupid questions if I had ADD and OCD. I cannot believe this man that he asked me for my information. That bastard! I'm a fucking college student! I hate BeeAre. In 2012, I had to investigate Snafu-Comics and talked to the moderator to get rid of those cyberbullies. But he didn't believe me and banned my account. I was so frustrated! Shit! This can't be happening... So on February 3, 2015, I went to the police department by myself while my mom and my sister were off to work (I am unemployed, I have to find a job). As I arrived at the police station, I talked to her and tried to report on cyberbullies, unfortunately, the police lady said there was nothing we do. How can this be? They just cyberbullied me on the internet! I was beyond frustrated because no one has ever helped me. I have no job and I can't even move on from my Mom's house. And now I can't become an entertainer and create my own anime. I was very desperate about this. I hate BeeAre and Seiryuga in my entire life. So now I made this petition to stop the cyberbullying. It's my only hope that people will sign this. I've always prayed that let this cyberbullying end. I spread the word to everyone, my family, my aunties and uncles, my cousins, my friends, my idols, my old high school teachers, and even YouTubers. I want everyone to need my support. And also, I mailed them to NBC and CBS about my cyberbullying problem. But I've got to move on from my Mom's house as quick as possible. That's all I'm saying. Sincerely, Jasmine.

Theory time

Alright, so we all know through the context of this being written in a fanfiction/a03 format that this is all a play about canon VS fanon. What is a little hard to decipher is what are the things that are plays off fanon and which qualities are the true aspects of the characters(canon)? ANYWAY here are just a few of the things I am ASSUMING are plays off fanon based on my years in the fandom and sheer obsession of consuming this shit (trigger warning for everything taken place in the epilogue FYI):

-Dave: I think some of the main aspects of fanon influencing his epilogue version is intertwined with “woobifying”, “Slow burn”, and even possibly even “sexuality”.

-Woobifying is a fandom concept of reducing a character to “a cinnamon roll too pure for this world” someone you wanna baby (often applied to trans guy characters whether canon or headcanoned). This one is a bit of reach I’ll admit because it DOES makes sense that after years of living with Karkat the dude would soften up but there were times in the epilogue even Dave admits he’s gotten softer and the dude just plain out was very passive. In my time I’ve seen tons of depictions of Dave as a lot more emotional than shown in the comic or a lot more woobified in fics (like in meteor fics where he often has very dramatic emotional outbursts) By the way this is NOT me shitting on you if you like viewing Dave in that way because a lot people with trauma relate to him and use him for “cathartic release”(me fucking too lol). It’s more a guess/observation of maybe why he’s developed in this way due to the comic now being a strange sponge absorbing all fanon, good and bad, into it weird ass grasp.

-Slow burn is likely the trope that plays into why the hell it took so fucking long for him AND Karkat to admit their feelings. If you have literally ever consumed Davekat content I’m sorry but 99% of it is slow burn lmao every meteor fic is pining, every coffee shop AU is the budding of a lifelong partnership, and every Harry potter furry inflation pwp crossover WHATEVER fic is 10k words building of sexual tension like......To bring their other relationships in canon into this we can see that Dave was able to flirt with Jade and Terezi and entered a relationship with them at a pretty normal rate WHICH can totally be attributed to the fact he views them as girls and himself as heterosexual so was much more comfortable making a move- sure. Looking at Karkat, however, and you see the dude is a little shy about romance sure but he was still able to flirt with Terezi and make awkward moves on John so like......I can’t help but to feel like something outside (us?) was influencing them?

-Sexuality is another sort of reach but I think it’s something to consider. In terms of the comic....when exactly DID canon end? You could argue at the end of act 7.......or the moment John used his retcon powers to create a new timeline. Fandom Dave (on the tumblr side at least) was usually consider queer and a lot people shipped Dave with another dude. Perhaps John going back and rewriting canon helped bring our influence over Dave’s sexuality into the comic? I remember finding out Davekat was canon and confirming my “Dave is bisexual” headcanon and just thinking in wonder how it felt like Hussie was plucking my desires straight from my head and incorporating them. Which made me HAPPY by the way. If this is anywhere even near truth it’s not like he didn’t do a fantastical and natural job of incorporating it into the comic which shows how “incorporated fanon” is not a totally horrendous thing. The comics always done it with fandom memes and such.

-Rose Lalonde. Not too sure what fanon influenes were brought onto her to be honest? In candy she was almost like a creepy stepford wife which is. Bizarre to me. Rose is the most contrary and rebellious character so seeing her settle down like that (OR FUCKING DOING SOME GUYS LAUNDRY) is a little strange. In meat she insists that she is an individual despite being married but that could have EASILY been Dirk’s influence? Also her biggest fandom stereotypes off the top of my head is Know-it-all smug meddler, alcoholic, and elegant. Really none of that was applied so still need to consider her more. The most damning thing however is where is all the piss?? If you look at the amount of piss kink rose fanfiction one has to wonder......and I can’t even continue this joke.

-Jade Harley: Gonna keep it real with ya’ll. I feel like this epilogue gave Jade Harley way more character. She wasn’t given much in canon except for lonely silly girl so it makes sense to me why she’d grow up desperate for physical bonds and inserting herself into relationships. I liked her telling John that she wasn’t some princess in a tower anymore cause it shows she KNOWS how everyone has always viewed her and that’s a little sad. As for tropes around her character.....yep people pleaser, silly girl, hippie, shoved aside for literally any other character......Need to think about her more, too.

-Jake fucking English. What even is there to say? He more than anyone was influenced by fanon and it doesn’t take too much thought to see how. In a lot of fandom jokes and in fanfiction he is basically treated as a stupid piece of meat. I genuinely don’t read much fanfiction about him except from a trust few fans who I know care about him and will write him in a full rounded way. In any case we see a single moment in which Jake has this oppressive narrative taken away from him and it was when he was talking to Dave and Karkat during their election conversation. If that wasn’t already hard enough to read we can look back at the implied rape that took place with him in the beginning of Jane’s relationship with him or over the course of it. John, the one person supposedly not influenced by fanon as he’s still tied to the comic via retcon powers, is even the one to tell people that Jake is basically being raped. So yeah. Good times. I’ll get to Dirk in terms of Jake in a moment L M A O. Imagine that being the saddest lmao you ever just read.

-Jane Crocker: Welp hope you weren't a Jane fan lmao. What can I say except it FEELS like all the subliminal messaging really got to her and she’s like......warped by the condesce? I think if in the comic they showed more of her political takes then maybe this wouldn’t have come as such a shock. Like, I flat out am disgusted by her character now? She’s a facist, abusive, rapist(that was hint, unfortunately)? WOW good take homestuck writting staff?? I mean I know one of you used to write like incest pedo rape porn but aight??????????? Anyways in fanon Jane is treated as the girl who gets in the way of dirkjake so kinda that early 2000s bitchy yaoi girl brand, boring person in the background, or the hottie. They obviously kept saying she was “easy on the eyes” so there’s the hottie trope but that’s about it.

-Roxy Lalonde: Out of ALL the Alphas they fucking escaped with their goddamn dignity PFFT. So in terms of tropes: trans Roxy, alcoholic, and flirty “boy obsessed”.

-So with trans Roxy this is like Dave’s sexuality thing I discussed where a widely celebrated headcanon influenced canon and that not necessarily a BAD thing. Like I said, this theory is that canon is just absorbing fanon for better and for worse. I saw people were bummed they weren’t a trans girl but I am actually down with this for two reasons. 1) being all those memes “what’s your gender?” “the void” and 2) a part being friends with someone who’s trans is.....not being used to seeing them as the gender they actually are but taking the time to learn these new unfamiliar pronouns- and get the fuck over it. It’s their choice and you just gotta accept it despite your feelings.

-alcoholic Roxy was not at all incorporated which is the biggest fanon about her (not as much in recent years thankfully) so honestly? Kinda diminishes my argument. It’s not like the writers were worried that tossing out their progress as person was bad writing lol look at Dirk.

-Flirty Rox. In candy they were SUPER fast moving in their relationship with John and despite towards the end they said that Dirk dying made them wanna do something with their life I just....don’t buy it? Mainly because john who is uninfluenced by the fanon tropes even noticed how fast they were moving and how stepford agreeable wife she’d become.

-Dirk Strider. Aight. So. Here we go. fandom tropes are controlling puppet master, abusive, and cold/uncaring.

-Dirk is a naturally controlling man, yes. Every version of himself struggles with this, yes. Even if we work on issues does not mean old flaws will never leak out, yes. However, after in the comic itself we see conversations with some of his closest companions and the effort he was making and ready to continue making was completely obliterated. Dirk is someone who takes his projects a little too seriously so why would he toss out this one- the most important one in his life? ANYWAY........Dirk in canon is shown that he’s also not great at multi-tasking or really anything that he really makes himself out to be AMAZING at. Don’t get me wrong I actually view Dirk as a complement dude cause he did get all the alphas into the session in a smoothish fashion (yes hal is him so it still counts) but, like, even when Dirk sounds like an AWESOME engineer to Jake he even admits that he basically had the future’s technology to help and it wasn’t that impressive. So now he’s claiming he’s the BEST? Wack.

-Abusive Dirk......The sheer amount of people in the fandom who still misconstrue his character as heartless and the sheer amount of fanfiction of sociopathic Dirk might’ve done something. If he is truly becoming his “ultimate self” and he is heart aspect.....all these fanfiction splinters are getting applied to him as well, ya’ll. INCLUDING one of the epilogues writers who literally used to write fanfiction depicting Dirk as a brutally abusive and manipulative version of himself. With the similarities between their big fic and the homestuck epilogue I can’t help but to wonder if they’re subtly trying to incorporate that? After all Alt Calliope goes into detail about how the writer/narrator is IMPORTANT and when one is someone who enjoys viewing dirk as such....well who’s to say pfft Everything about how Dirk treated Jake was some of the most shocking to me. How did you get the guy taking most of the blame for a relationship gone wrong to a man who in a very rapey way makes someone obsessed with him, stupid, and unable to ever receive respect? Horrifying stuff to read, lads. It makes much more sense to me if you look at this fandom’s perceptions on DirkJake. My god there are some bad takes and there’s a whole section of the fandom who was hellbent on making the ship out to be the most problematic ship to ever occur. So whereas in the comic you have Dave pointing out that both sides had issues and everyone was willing to talk things out you had half the fandom insist that it was all Dirk’s fault and he just COMPLETLY forced himself on an unwanting Jake. Yep, sound familiar?

-cold uncaring. yep tons of depictions of Dirk being cruel to his friends and family and sorry but go reread Homestuck I don’t even know what to tell you if you actually believe that. There’s literally nothing here I could write to help you. As if the whole thing about his character isn’t about how the people around him helped prevent him becoming like that and he hasn’t said in a dozen different ways how much he loves them and wants to treat them better. Get out of here with that shit lmao

I guess all can be said about Dirk at this point is either 1) the absorption of the vast amount of terrible Dirk depictions from ascending to his ult self has warped him 2) he’s playing a villain just because Homestuck being over means not existing which TERRIFIES him and existing is a higher priority than treating the people around him right or 3) caliborn influence

1) For the ascending I’m pretty sure this is the theory that’s gonna be right

2) playing the villain is probably not what it is because on twitter all of the writers are saying the transphobia is literally just him and they’re boosting a lot of theories say “this is a story about friends you love disappointing you and you moving on” So. Yeah. Take that depressing nugget of information. (I literally will be fucking dead inside if that really is where this story is taken. No joke I will probably quit this fandom lol don’t know if any of you really know how big that is for me to say

Thank you again @technoxslayer360 @dasjansel @corvid-moon @incoherentmoose @cake-and-roses and @teeny-weeny-ducklings for your lovely responses! Unfortunately, the characters I've shown are from THE story, so it will probably be years before I have it complete. I will, however, post excerpts, and I'll write scenarios that you request, like "tol and smol," "person A and person B," AUs, or general shenanigans. I encorage all pairings, minus sexual ones with Uri since they're asexual.

In the meantime, and to help me practice my writing, I started writing my first "fanfiction," if you will. I love yaoi, yuri, shoujo, and dating sims, and I wanted to make a story that pokes fun at the flaws of those tropes, and also have a much more realistic take of it. It was first just meant to be only for my eyes, but it's sort of become it's own thing. I've written 70k words in about 2 months, which is novel length. I realize now that it's a little too important to keep to myself. It's about discovering your sexuality, finding self worth, the lines of consent, enduring abusive relationships, battling severe trauma, learning to stand up for yourself, and learning to accept yourself. It's heavily based off of things that have happened to me irl and has been surprisingly cathartic to write.

I need beta readers, especially since I'm so inexperienced. I would like to ask you if you would consider becoming one. However, this is an incredibly graphic story. There is s*x, there is r*pe, there is a little blood, and there is a lot of psychological abuse. It is not a gentle story. It will have a happy ending, though. I totally get if you don't want to be a beta reader and respect if you say no and won't pry as to the reason why. If you could spread this around and help me find more beta readers, I would GREATLY appreciate it. Now, onto the OCs!

Manga Recommendations: Unrequited Series - Drama Edition Part 1

You looking for some cute, sweet, and light unrequited stories? Fuck outta here ‘cause we’re all about drama in this area 😂. Come all ye masochists who want to involve themselves with guilt and sympathy, I’m going to share with you the loot I’ve scoured in the darkest and saddest part of the unrequited sea. y’all should be thankful that there’s no Harada in here, we’ll leave the psychological shit for another day

Now when I say “unrequited feelings”, it doesn’t necessarily mean that they are directed to the mc’s future partner. The criteria I have for liking unrequited works also include the span of time the character has on this person - ‘cause as we all know, the longer, the more painful. HAHAHA WHAT KIND OF TRASH AM I? And the circumstance which makes such love unrequited must be so goddamned heavy that being a man in love with another man isn’t the only major issue. I am also including those works where one of the mcs have gone out with their old partners ‘cause breaking up with them means that they don’t feel the same way for each other hence, unrequited love.

This is literally the first BL manga that made me cry.

Even so, he still entered the same university and same department as Akira. But on the way back, Akira suddenly kisses Motoharu, causing Motoharu’s hope to grow. However, the next day, Akira tells him to forget it, causing Motoharu to blame Akira.

JUST FUCK ME UP, TAKARAI RIHITO-SENSEI. Yo, this comes with a tragedy tag so be warned. This tastes like Bacardi 151 when you drink it straight - like death, really.

I want you to imagine a situation for a sec, so close your eyes and imagine

It’s late March, two months away from your high school graduation. You’ve been a part of a friend group in high school that you’ve cherished for three years, and now you’re faced with the fact that you’re all going to pretty much be going your separate ways. You’ll see each other, but it’ll never be the daily after school hang outs again. Not only that, your relationship with a girl who had basically been by your side for your hardest moments in the past year, someone who defended you and loved you, just ended, and now that relationship along with various others have just ended in the rockiest fashion possible despite you trying your best. Along with all of that, you got yourself with a fandom that’s basically spit you out and kicked you around, called your ideas garbage and basically made you feel like shit because of your race, gender and sexuality. All of this you have to deal with as you also face the possibility of moving out of your apartment, the place you’ve called home for 17 and a half years because your mom wants a change of scenery and onset depression that’s quickly becoming more and more severe by the day.

That was me a year ago, and truth be told I had never felt more alone and lower than at time. I had come to this site to try and escape that, and it worked for the most part, but really it was just something that was always nagging and there, and no matter what I did I just couldn’t escape it. I didn’t wanna get out of bed, my personal health and hygiene dropped, and I was really a shell of myself. I couldn’t do anything right it felt like, and I felt like there was no one to really help me. I started escaping more to anime, music and video games as a result, and a lot of old insecurities popped up and just left me a mess.

Then, one day after school with my friends I accidentally dug up my old PS Vita, the white one that you got if you got the Assassin’s Creed bundle. I made a remark that I hadn’t played it in years, and a friend of mine who had graduated the year before said he knew some good games, and literally the first thing that came out of his mouth was Persona 4 Golden. I had heard of Persona, but I never actually knew what it was or anything. It seemed so foreign and just out there that it had never came up on my radar, so he immediately dragged me on a 15 minute walk to the nearest GameStop and grabbed the one copy of P4 Golden that they had in stock. He even went out of his way to buy it for me, a $40 game for a dead console. Now I wouldn’t really make a big deal out of this stuff, but this was one of my friends who never really had a lot of money on him. He was always saving his money up, so the fact that he was willing to shell out the money for me like that meant he was serious. So, we went back to my place, and I put in the game.

The opening title played, Shadow World, and that colorful opening played. I always make it a thing to watch the opening on my first playthrough when I play a game, and this game was no exception. I remember liking the visuals, but there was one person that caught my interest right off the bat. There was a person who was doing a little dance with a trash can, and at the time I thought that was really funny. I read his name, and it just said Yosuke. I looked on the cover for him, and I said to my friend “He kinda looks like me”, and that ensued a bunch of jokes and a short nickname for a while. Anyways, I remember because of this I was really interested to learn more about him, and going into this game knowing nothing I didn’t know when I’d meet him. Luckily for me, he was the first person I met in the game (or at least one of the first). I remember him crashing into that trash can and just Yu not helping, and him getting kicked in the balls by Chie after not returning her ‘Trial of the Dragon’ in one piece. I thought this was really funny, since the dude was kind of a down on his luck dork who meant well, and it was something I could really relate to.

However, as I got further into those first few hours of the tutorial and everything, I learned more about him. His full name was Yosuke Hanamura, and he was the son of the man who owned the big chain mall in town, Junes, the one the MC’s character sings the jingle to whenever it’s on T.V. He was voiced by Yuri Lowenthal, the same VA who voiced Simon the Digger in Gurren Lagann, a favorite of mine, and he had a crush on a cute girl named Saki. However, his crush ended up being the first victim in what would become a string of murders in Inaba, and he wanted to find out the truth of what happened to his dearly beloved. So into the TV World they go, and there Yosuke finds out that not only did Saki not like him back, but she outright hated him and resented him since his father’s business stole business away from her own family’s. He hears her talk about her hatred toward him, and also has to come face to face with his Shadow, his true self. We find out that he’s actually depressed and hates life for the most part. He moved to Inaba not too long ago, and he felt alone and isolated because he was from the city. He wanted people to like him, and he tried his damnest to feel like an equal to people, including the person who would become his best friend in the MC. But, there he was, hating life and always feeling like a burden to those around him and wanting to isolate himself from others because he didn’t feel like an equal.

I’m not a man of god or anything really, but this felt like a sign or something. I never had related so hard to a character in my life before, and it was enough that I actually found myself crying at the end of learning about him and the two of you agreeing to solve the murders.

So I went on and played the rest of the game, with Yosuke being the first social link that I finished in the game. I saw him try and come to terms with his depression, realize that he now had a group of friends around him who accepted him, and that he’d always be considered an equal with his bro and partner. As I’m writing this, I’m still thinking about the raw emotion I felt seeing all of this for the first time and just tearing up about it. For a long time I changed my profile pic on Facebook to a picture of him, he was the character that really made me want to cosplay, something I had never even thought of before, and I ended up deciding to make him my face claim, something I still keep up to this very day. I remember I tried to get my hands on any type of merch for him, though I didn’t really find much until later on (like a partial yaoi manga with him and Yu, something I’ve read time and time again with no regrets~). Despite all of that, my love for Yosuke had ran deep at that point, so when I finished the game in the middle of August I cried once more. My time with him was done, and I would never really get that same feeling back like the first time I met him.

That now meant I had two weeks to play Persona 5, the first game I got on my PS4 after I rebought it due to selling it to get the Switch. I went into this game with high expectations, since everyone told me it was amazing. However, I still had my biases, like the fact that there wasn’t Yosuke in this game. So I sat down and decided that I was going to basically speed run this game for two weeks, trying my best to finish it before I went off to college. I worked basically from 7 in the morning to 5 in the afternoon, and the second I got home I’d basically play it until 2 in the morning. For two weeks, I went to work at a summer camp with five year olds in the blazing hot sun on five hours of sleep a night. It was an experience to say the least, one that kinda made me realize too how much I didn’t want to work there again, but I digress.

So I sat down and played this game for two weeks, got about 72 or so hours in and had to stop right at the final palace before I went to college. That being said, once more I was blown away by this game and it’s characters, but again someone had captured my heart, this time the lovely model Ann Takamaki. I could go on about how much I love her, but I’ve done that enough on here so you guys get the point. The Phantom Thieves of Hearts felt like a group of friends that I was a part of, and it just made me feel... so special. I can’t explain that feeling, but I felt like they were there with me all the time, and that no matter where I went or what I did they were going to support me with all their hearts, just like they had done for all of their friends in game too. It was a shame that my journey with them had to be on pause for four months, but regardless that feeling of belonging helped me fit into a new friend group at my university, ones that shared similar interests, treated me like an equal, and yes, even loved Persona as much as I did.

When December came and I was home for winter recess, I immediately picked back up Persona 5 to finish it. By now, I had gained new friends, especially a ton on here that had helped me a lot more with my own issues, and that meant I was ready to pick up and catch up with my other friends in Persona 5. I spent another 30 or so hours finishing up the game, and I remember finishing the game at 1 in the morning a few days after New Years Day. As I watched the credits role, I ended up crying even harder than I did with Persona 4. The entire journey was over, and it felt like I was saying goodbye to all of these friends I had made over the past few months, and that I wouldn’t see them again. Of course I would, but much like with Yosuke I wouldn’t have that same feeling. I sobbed in the middle of the night over nine characters and their friends leaving me, and I felt a pain in my heart that I seriously don’t feel all that much. It was so surreal to feel that type of way about pixels on a screen, but I felt it nonetheless.

And now, as I listen to the soundtracks of the two games that I played for days on end, I find myself thinking back on all of this. I can’t express what this series has meant to me, and how much it has contributed to me making friends, improving as a person and just really getting my life back on track. I know people probably don’t wanna read this, but I wanted to share it with all of you, because really I think it’s important. I hope you guys have something you all can gush about like I do, because it’s just super wonderful. Thanks to this series for just... everything. I seriously can’t express how much it’s played a part of my life for the past year.

Now, sad boy hours are over, and I’m going to grab a snack. I hope everyone’s having a wonderful night and are happy right now. I’m spreading some of my positive vibes toward all of you~ <3

My Hero Academia, season 2 - Episode 14

And finally home. Let’s get this party started. It’s My Hero Academia, episode 14! Here we GO!

-We begin with…A quick recap of the whole Quirk phenomenon and the modern superhero. You know all this, we just went over it in 13.5. But we also get more tiny Izuku, which is always worth the time. And it sets the stage well for the next step, so I’ll allow it.

-Opening! I’m not sure it’s quite as good an opening as the first one, but this is still a really solid tune and there’s something to seeing everyone trying to center themselves for just a moment before shit gets real.

-So it’s the day after the attacks, with police having successfully arrested 72 known villains…But the ringleaders are still out there.

-To the abandoned wreckage of an old hotel, by the looks of it. Where we have a letter from All Might, discussing the day he met Izuku, and chose that boy to be a truly great symbol…And all of this has been sent to his old mentor, by All Might…By Toshinori Yagi.

-Episode 14: That’s the Idea, Ochaco

-Cut to that night, to a meeting of top heroes about the whole situation with Tomura, and the shadow man Kurogiri. They’re not on the records at all…Which means they’re working from square one. But No Might also has some doubts. He doesn’t think that Shigaraki Tomura is entirely what things look like…He didn’t act like a grown man with darkness in his heart. He acted like a child, lashing out. Visibly confused and upset when things didn’t just work the way they were Supposed To.

-And then there’s all the other villains they arrested…They were smalltime. Glorified purse snatchers and convenience store robbers. And yet they threw in with a plan like kill All Might without hesitation, and followed a man-child to the end…All of which suggests some bad things coming…And the principal, Nezu, is the one who tags onto the idea that Tomura might have someone building him up, building him into a truly deadly villain. It’s a worrying thought. Bad enough if they have a raw and untempered malice still out there…If it’s got someone to hone it and give it an edge? That suggests some truly terrifying possibilities.

-To Deku’s place. he’s back in his room, watching the All Might video and lost deep in thought. And for good reason…He only survived, all of them only survived, because they got lucky. Because they were dealing with villains who didn’t bother to consider them an actual threat. And even with that, they still mostly slowed down the actual adults. And Deku knows all too well, that he’s looking at a timer. His hero, the legend himself, the man who acts as a capstone to hold normalcy together, grows weaker by the day. His body struggles more and more to keep going with that injury. If Deku isn’t ready to be the next All Might when the time comes, then…

-…His mother knocks on the door to announce dinner. And for just a moment, he’s able to put those thoughts away, and just be a normal young man again.

-Next morning. The invisible girl is excited that they all got on the news, but sad that she didn’t stand out at all. …I mean…

-So, yeah. Some of the kids are excited, some are nervous, and everyone’s still hype about watching All Might kick aaaasssss. …And then Tenya tries to rally everyone but mostly he just ends up looking like a dork.

-Now, who’s going to be their homeroom teacher? Since Shota is still out on injuries. The door opens, and…!

-…Get the fuck back in bed, Shota.

-No. They have work to do. Because…The sports festival is coming up!

-And there’s actually a lot of reasons for that. Chiefly, it’s about putting on a strong face. They need to look like the villain attack didn’t even make them flinch. And also, the UA Sports Festival has overtaken the Olympics within Japan…And it’s also a huge scouting chance. Major agencies and independent heroes will be watching the event. It’s simply too important.

-But still, seriously, you need to be back in a fucking hospital bed.

-By lunchtime, everyone’s all super hype…And the invisible girl is trying to figure out how to stand out again. It’s…Difficult. While Deku is mostly just nervous and freaking out, and Tenya’s trying to hype him up in his own way. And Ochaco…

-…Um…

-How do I put this…

-I want to be gentle in how I phrase this…

-She’s going to make a skull throne out of the enemy team.

-Thankfully she’s calmed down by the time they actually go get grub, which gives Deku a chance to ask why she wants to go pro-hero.

-…It’s the money. She needs stable income god dammit. Her family works in construction…But they can’t get any work right now. And her folks wouldn’t let her just go to a trade school to get licensed to use her powers to carve down their labor costs. Because they wanted her to chase her dreams…

-And so here she is. Intending to make enough money to not just support herself, but to let her folks retire and live the life they’ve earned. It’s not a big shiny motivation, but it’s got a lot of honor and nobility in its own way…

-Aaaand then that’s when All Might finds them and invites Deku to join him for lunch. Which, I must note, sends the yaoi-fangirl part of Ochaco’s mind into overdrive and guys I think she’s dead. Which leaves Tenya and Ochaco with questions between themselves as they get in line for lunch…But not knowing anything of All Might’s power, they can only run on the idea that the legendary hero has taken a liking to their friend with a similar brute-strength Quirk and swift response to trouble. But all of that gets heard by Shoto…

-Of course the real reason is they need to talk. No Might’s power limits are down from three hours…To half that. And that’s if he’s just standing around. If he’s actually out there doing shit, he’s down to about fifty minutes.

-And then there’s the problem of the problem of the sports festival, and Deku maintaining One For All…But that reminds him of what happened during the attack. He managed to hold it back…When he was aiming at an actual person.

-A subconscious response. But it’s progress…Now drink your tea. No Might admits, his time as a symbol is coming to an end. And fast. Faster now than before after everything that happened. Deku, you need to be ready. And you need to show yourself at this event as a rising star. It’s time to get eyes on you. It’s time to show the whole world just who you are!

-Credits! Which show a peek into the lives of the girls of 1-A.

Alright, that put some interesting pieces into the equation! We’ve got some good character beats, some solid plot nuggets, and of course the sports festival…Which could be really good or really bad. Some of the shonen genre’s best content has been inside tournament arcs…But so has a lot of its absolute worst. I guess we’ll see how it goes next time, in episode FIFTEEN of My Hero Academia! Wait for it!

“And then you-- Axel?” Zexion passed a hand over Axel’s face with a frown, before finally leaning forward and kissing him. That seemed to help get his head back in the game, and the elder man leaned in to chase his lips. Zexion nipped him softly with his teeth and shook his head, “How much of that did you space out for?”

“Huh?” Axel blinked a little bit, staring at him, “What do you mean?”

“You were zoning out. You’re as bad as Roxas.” Zexion rolled his eyes, smiling slightly as he leaned forward, “No wonder you have to be tutored. Apparently you can’t focus unless I touch you. You’re so tactile.”

“What’s that mean?” It wasn’t like Zexion didn’t insult him occasionally, but he didn’t think right now would be the best time. Was that even an insult? Zexion’s entire vocabulary was way higher than his, despite the younger man being three years younger than him.

“You like to be touched.” Zexion stroked his bare palm over Axel’s cheek and the elder man purred, causing him to roll his eyes again. “You need to focus or you’re going to fail this class. You can’t go into accounting if you can’t even pass the basics.”

“I don’t really think I’m going to fail just because I--”

“If you can’t handle the basics, you will fail.” Zexion sighed, straightening up from where he had settled to lean against the table. Crawling into his lap, he scooted into the best possible position to continue. “Will you listen, now?”

“I-- Y-Yes.” Axel murmured into his hair, pressing his nose to the nape of the other’s neck, “I can do it.”

“Then let’s try again.” Zexion took a deep breath. “Now, let’s see… We’ll start back here,” He began, pointing to a page he turned to in the other’s textbook. Axel knew he was in for a long afternoon.

(2. News; Letter)

[Text To: Fire In The Hole] You are never going to guess what happened.

[Text To: Sexion] It’s hard 2 tell with u.

[Text To: Fire In The Hole] Meet me at the fence.

Axel was in his backyard in a matter of minutes, and he could almost hear the vibrating of the sixteen-year-old on the other side. Pushing back the broken plank, Axel’s jade eyes met wide cobalt as the younger teen grinned at him.

“Woah, you look bright-eyed and bushy-tailed.” That was something Xigbar had definitely taught him to say. “What’s up?”

“Radiant Garden accepted me to join the Biochem program.” Zexion kept his voice down, but he nearly looked like he could jump for joy. “I’ll be able to begin working in the lab Vexen works for in my second semester.”

“That’s great, Zex,” Axel grinned, crouched in the corner of the yard, “I’m really happy for you.” Even if that meant his boyfriend would probably have to take even more time away from him for studying.

“You sound sad. Didn’t think you’d be my main focus forever, did you, Axel?” He teased, sitting on his knees and scooting close, “Do you need reassurance?” Axel often needed his attention to prove that he was important.

“For what?” Axel tried to laugh, rubbing his hair down against his neck as he scooted closer to face him better, “What are you going to do when you start going to school? Get drunk and mate someone else your first day?”

“Oh, hardly,” Zexion cackled, hiding his amusement beneath his hand, “You’re the only person I can feasibly see myself being even remotely nude around, so you shouldn’t worry. Come here.” Pushing more at the loose plank, he pressed the bridge of his nose to the top of the hole.

Axel eagerly scooted closer, kissing the smaller’s lips and melting into the feeling of it. That was probably better for easing his worries than anything Zexion could have said.

“Anyway, don’t you go to RGU? What sort of partying have you been doing?” Zexion accused playfully when he pulled back, leaving Axel wanting, chasing his lips.

“Getting tutored by a sixteen-year-old.” Axel replied, “And I’m in the math department. Biochem is on the opposite side of campus.”

“Well, we’ll have to meet in the middle for lunch.” Zexion told him, “I’ll let you know what my schedule is when I get it. Maybe we can even talk Vexen into letting you be my ride.”

“I doubt it.” Axel chuckled, “But a little hope never killed anyone.”

(3. Jolt!)

How long had he been sitting outside of McDuck’s Ice Cream Parlor, now? Zexion was sure that he was going to be waiting all day. If Axel kept him there alone much longer, he’d be forced to start eating before he arrived. Sighing, he placed his elbow on the table and his head in his hand as he closed his eyes, pulling a small paperback of Of Mice And Men from his jacket pocket and began to read. The pressed flower bookmark he had had in it made him smile. A birthday gift from Axel when he’d been eleven, something he had kept in pristine condition all this time.

After a few minutes’ worth of reading, he glanced at his phone. Axel had said that that was where they were going to meet… Maybe he was waiting inside. Sighing again and starting to get up, he jolted instead when he felt hands on his hips.

“There you are.” Axel grinned, happy to take the elbow to the chest that had been apparently waiting for him. He chuckled, unable to help himself.

“Hey! Don’t do that!” Zexion exclaimed, frowning, turning fully to face him and placing both hands on his hips, knocking Axel’s grubby hands from them. “You know I detest being surprised!”

“I couldn’t help myself!” Axel chuckled, holding his hands up in a placating gesture as Zexion bopped his shoulder with his palm. “Okay, okay. At least I didn’t use this?” He held up a pen that suddenly looked menacing.

“What is that?” Zexion asked, unamused.

“It’s one of those shocker pen things. Reno boosted it and got me with it.” Axel explained, earning a bristled scowl from Zexion, “I wouldn’t do that to you, Bunny, don’t worry.”

“You had best not.” Zexion answered easily, “If you want me to buy you lunch, still.”

“I won’t, I won’t.” Axel laughed softly, leaning down to kiss his lips. Zexion knocked his hair into his face, leaving Axel to kiss it against his cheek, and he sighed. “I’m sorry.”

“You should be for even considering it.” Zexion flipped his hair back, looking up at him and finally smiled softly, “Let’s get your ice cream. I can’t believe your dad lets you eat that for lunch.” He chuckled, knowing that Vexen would have his head for even thinking about it.

“Okay, okay.” Axel smiled, leaning down again and surprising Zexion with an actual kiss on the lips, “Let’s get lunch. Plus, this place has burgers and stuff, so we can get real food, first.” But only if Zexion made him.

“You and I both know that Vexen won’t think of that as food.” Zexion laughed, pushing at the elder’s face and turning to enter McDuck’s Ice Cream Parlor. Axel was quick to follow, taking his hand once inside the building.

(4. Our Distance And That Person)

It wasn’t every day that Zexion was allowed to get a ride home from someone other than Vexen. Axel had taken Xigbar’s wood-paneled station wagon to Radiant Garden University, and Vexen was working late. Zexion had simply told him he was getting a ride home from a fellow student and that he would be waiting when he arrived with dinner ready. That seemed to be enough for Vexen’s hesitant approval, and the ride home with Axel had begun.

Standing on Vexen’s front porch, with Xigbar’s station wagon parked in his own driveway, Zexion spoke in a flurry of hand motions uncharacteristic to his usually quiet demeanor. Axel hadn’t heard the end of the supposed idiot in Zexion’s Shakespearian Literature class, and it didn’t seem like it would let up any time soon. Catching one of Zexion’s hands, Axel tugged him in for a gentle kiss that caught him off guard and stopped his tirade for the first time in twenty minutes.

“I get it, Zex,” Axel said softly against his mouth, “But didn’t you tell me that more than fifteen minutes of talking about stuff that pisses you off is unproductive?” He remembered it being something about being detrimental if one continued to obsess.

“Mn… And you seek to stop me?” Zexion teased with a soft smile, wrapping his arms around the other’s neck to tug him in tighter. Axel lifted him by his thighs, walking him to the porch swing and sitting down. Holding him close, he guided the smaller to tilt his head and lapped at his lips, easily being accepted as the pair kept contact, Axel’s hands sliding to his hips. With both knees folded on the sides of Axel’s thighs, Zexion scooted in until his knees touched the back of the swing.

It went on like that for a while, until Reno poked his head around the seven-foot-tall privacy fence and spoke.

“Dude, Vexen’s definitely on the block. Scatter!”

Axel deposited Zexion on the porch swing with one final kiss and vaulted over the porch railing in record time, bounding to his side of the fence when the silver Acura NSX pulled past their other neighbor’s mailbox. Once it was parked safely in the driveway, Zexion had already gone inside to start dinner, making a rather decent run of it by chopping as fast as he could. Their chicken carbonara would be done before Vexen was ready to eat, for sure.

Axel watched warily through a hole in the fence as Vexen paused on his doorstep, key in hand, and sniffed. The other Alpha shook his head and entered the house without a word, leaving him sighing softly, sinking down the fence.

“That was close.” Reno commented absently, arms crossed as he looked down at his twin, “I’d say it’s time you convince Zexion to convince Vexen to let him get a dorm room. Maybe then you wouldn’t have to run away every time he got close.”

“I’d still have to run if he came to visit.” Axel replied, “And you can bet that Zexion would get his own room to himself, too. Vexen’s program is incredibly pricey, I hear.”

“Except for the one kid he ushered in without a test.” Reno reminded, “So Zexion’ll get a cozy little love nest for you two that Vexen has access to. So I guess just be careful and don’t take off your shoes.”

“My-- Reno!” Smacking his twin in the thigh, Axel hoisted himself up to his feet and started for the house. “Shut it, you and I both know Zexion wouldn’t tolerate dirt in his room.” Shoes weren’t allowed in his house, they wouldn’t be allowed in his dorm room.

“I know, I know. Clean freak begets clean freak.” Reno paused, “Did I use that right or are you going to go full ham on me?”

“Oh my God,” Axel groaned, “I think you used it right but I’ll be sure to ask.”

“Dude, no!”

“Then don’t try me.”

“I totally helped you, dude, you guys were playing tonsil hockey and you would have gotten killed with an icicle if Vex would have caught you.” Reno murmured, crossing his arms, “So you should be thanking me.”

“Thanks for saving my life.” Axel started, “But you’re being an ass. The dorm room thing is a good idea, though, so I guess I’ll give you that.”

“Finally, point Reno!”

“Yeah, Reno, one, everyone else, a lot more.”

“Shut it, Axe.” Reno groaned, pushing open the door, “Pulled him off the neighbor, dad, we’re good to go for dinner!”

(5. "Ano Sa…" ("Hey, You Know…."))

“I’ve been thinking about moving out to campus.” Axel began one evening, dipping his french fry in his chocolate milkshake and taking a bite, “What do you think?”

Zexion took a long draw from his coffee malt, pursing his lips around the straw and frowning finally when he swallowed and it dropped from his lips. After a moment, he looked over the red lacquered table, their homework spread beside their blue baskets of burgers and fries, sighing heavily.

“So you’d elect to move away from me?” He asked, already regretting the question when it left him. Axel looked heartbroken for a split second before trying on a hesitant smile.

“Well, it would give us more time to be together.” Axel told him easily, leaning forward animatedly, “You could come by my room and we could do whatever we want.” Winking playfully, he waggled his eyebrows and Zexion snorted.

“Provided your roommate doesn’t complain.”

“Well, I'll have to deal with that, not you.”

“What if he says something to the school? Vexen will find out--”

“Vexen won't find out. Trust me, babe, this will be better for us.” Axel tried, reaching across the table and taking his hand. Zexion held it limply, not convinced. Anxiety permeated his scent and all Axel wanted to do was scent him to calm him down.

“I suppose it’s something to think about.” Zexion acquiesced finally, sighing softly as he closed his eyes and took another sip of his malt. After a squeeze to Axel’s hand, they fell into relative silence, seemingly as Axel started to think.

“Hey, you know…” Axel began around a bite of his burger, a glare from Zexion making him swallow before he continued, “What if you got a dorm?”

“What?”

“You’re sixteen now, and Vexen’s on the school board.” Axel told him, “I doubt he’d let you share a room with a stranger, he doesn’t even let you come over to my house.” He pointed out, “So you wouldn’t have to worry about a roommate unless you wanted me to stay over with you.”

That thought had Zexion chewing over his thoughts, another bite of his burger behind him before he spoke once more. Axel found it endearing that he always chewed thoroughly and swallowed before he spoke. That wasn’t common in his house.

“I suppose you have a very valid point.” He finally admitted, drinking down more of the coffee malt he’d found was his favorite at this establishment, “Though convincing him to let me get a room here might be a bit more difficult.”

“How many times have you made and presented Powerpoints to him that have worked?” Axel asked with a sly grin, leaning over the table and nearly uprooting his milkshake in the process, “I know you can do this.” He kissed the other’s cheek, then his lips, and sat back on his side of the booth. “You’ve got this, babe. I wouldn’t steer you wrong.”

“Perhaps not on purpose.” Zexion chuckled, wiping absently at his lips with a napkin. “Very well. I will begin work tonight when I am home. This should be interesting, surely, because Vexen has as of yet decided that I will live at home until I’m his age.”

“You’re never going to catch up to him.” Axel laughed softly, rolling his eyes, “Well, maybe we can convince him that you need to spread your wings, test out being on your own. He won’t be around forever, after all.”

“Indeed.” Even if Reno often said that he was older than dirt. “I’ll have to talk him into it.”

“If anyone can do it, it’s you, kid genius.”

(6. The Space Between Dream And Reality)

“I can’t believe it.” Zexion told him through the fence, leaning on the back wall of it as he sighed dreamily, “My own dorm room, sans medical equipment and a parental figure.”

“It’s going to be so great. I can help you decorate.” Axel sounded more relieved than anything because maybe this was the real start to this five-year-long relationship. Their anniversary was coming up, and he thought it would be good to try and do something for it. Maybe this year they could actually celebrate.

“You can move in, if you want.” Zexion laughed softly, trying to keep his voice down, “I wouldn’t mind having you as a roommate.”

“Vexen would flip his shit.” Axel chuckled, “But I’d like to stay with you as much as I can. I can’t wait to get you to myself.”

“I suppose one Powerpoint was an awfully cheap price to pay for a little freedom and a lot more time with you. But it had better not interfere with my studying and work.” Zexion leveled a finger and wagged it at the other’s face through the hole in the fence.

“You look just like him when you do that. I’m sure he’s proud.” Axel rolled his eyes playfully, scooting towards the broken plank and pressing his cheeks to the wood, pursing his lips. “I won’t, I promise.”

“And you’ll seal it with a kiss?” Zexion chuckled, moving to his knees to place a soft peck on the other’s lips. “Then you had best not fall through on this promise. I need to maintain my studies.”

“I know, I know.” Axel leaned in for another kiss, “You have to maintain contact with me, too. Maybe you can study in my lap, and I’ll just hold you while you work.”

“That… Sounds rather nice, actually.”And brought a heavy blush to his cheeks, to boot.

“You’re beautiful,” Axel said that way too often for Zexion’s comfort, but he accepted the compliment with a tilt of his head to hide his face in his hair. “I honestly think I could--”

“Zexion! What are you doing out here? Shouldn’t you be packing?” Vexen’s voice signaled the end of their rendezvous, and Axel dutifully closed the loose plank so that he wouldn’t be seen.

“I’ll text you.” He whispered before disappearing into his house, and Zexion rose from his spot behind the strawberry bushes to enter the house.

“Yes, I know, Vexen. I was just taking a moment in the backyard, I needed some fresh air.”

“Well, you should know better than to take breaks before your toiling starts,” Vexen began, guiding him into the house with a sigh. The screen door slammed shut behind him, but he closed the inner door gentler, leading his son to his room, where boxes awaited him. He was going to have to take his time, even if he wanted to throw everything in the boxes. If he didn’t, his OCD wouldn’t give him a break.

(7. Superstar)

“No, no, no.” Zexion frowned a little bit as he placed his hands on his hips, weight shifting to his right foot, “That isn’t going up.”

“Oh, come on, Zex, he’s a good musician. Have to support our friends.” Axel pouted, holding up the poster that he and Demyx had made together so he could feel special. “He’s a regular superstar.”

“And he doesn’t get along with me very well.” Zexion pointed out, “I’m not going to stare at Demyx while you’re not here. I said ‘no’. Demyx is your friend, not mine.”

“Okay, okay, jeez.” Axel rubbed a hand through his hair, “I just thought--”

“You thought wrong.” Zexion crossed his arms, “Plus, I know he likes you. That doesn’t help.”

“He does?”

“He does.” Crossing the room to where his poster of the elements had hung up a minute ago, he placed it back on the wall and tacked it back into place. “And I don’t want the reminder every time I look at this wall.”

“Okay, I see your point.” Axel sighed, rolling the poster back up and putting it in his bag. “I’m sorry.”

“...You don’t have to be. I know he’s your friend.” Zexion crossed the room to his bed, sitting down. “Come here.”

Axel listened, walking to him and sitting beside him, head down. Zexion carefully reached over, taking his chin in hand and bringing him forth for a kiss.

“I'm sorry. I just… We really don’t get on well and I don’t really want to see him every time you’re here…” And if Axel got used to staring at Demyx, he might leave. Zexion was always anxious about that because Axel had so many options that were probably better than him.

“It’s okay, babe, I promise. I don’t want to stress you out more.” Living by himself was already bothering the younger teen, and Axel didn’t need to add to that. “I promise, it’s okay.”

“Okay… Thank you for understanding.”

“Of course.” Axel smiled softly, holding his free hand and kissing him again. “Try not to worry so much. I’m here and I’m not going anywhere.”

(8. Our Own World)

The fairie lights around the bed were a good touch, and even Axel could appreciate them. They made Zexion’s cobalt eyes sparkle as he looked at up Axel, laying in his bed laden with pillows and blankets like the veritable king he was in his palace. He lay with his head on a cat-themed pillow, one hand curled by his face and the other on his hip. It was a beautiful look on him, and Axel’s breath was caught in his throat.

“Axel?” Zexion asked softly, head tilting a little bit, “You’re staring.”

“You’re beautiful.” Axel purred happily, reaching forward to brush some hair from his face, “You made your room pretty beautiful, too.”

“Thanks.” Blushing a little bit, Zexion nuzzled his nose against Axel’s hand and kissed his palm.

“I love you,” Axel said softly, leaning forward to kiss his lips. “I really do.”

“I… I love you, too.” Zexion replied against his lips, and he nuzzled their noses together, “I’m so glad that you do.” He was always thankful for it.

Despite Vexen trying to tear them apart, the couple was happy to float in their own little world, oblivious to the elder man’s attempts to drive them away from each other.

(9. Dash)

Zexion opened the door to his dorm with his bag on his shoulder, only to find Axel fumbling with his keys. Blinking a couple of times in rapid succession, he looked up at him with a curious glint in his eyes.

“What are you doing here?”

“I was coming to see you between classes.” Axel replied, “But you look like you’re leaving?”

“I have a class in fifteen.” He replied, laughing softly, “So it’s a bad time. I’m not missing Vexen’s class.”

“Oh, shit, yeah..” Rubbing his hair, Axel blushed slightly, “I’ll come back, then.”

Leaning up on his tiptoes, Zexion pursed his lips, and Axel leaned in to kiss him lovingly.

“Gotta run.” Patting his shoulder, Zexion laughed softly as he made his mad dash to Vexen’s class.

“Wait,” Axel started, sucking his own lips into his mouth, “I could walk you most of the way to class?” He offered, clearly wanting to spend at least some time with Zexion. He liked to see him off to class, anyway, making sure the younger man got to class safely.

Zexion considered it, tapping his lower lip with his pointer finger, and finally nodded. “As long as I’m not late, I don’t mind.”

The pair walked together in companionable silence, Axel humming a song stuck in his head as he held the other’s hand. Leading the way to the science building, Zexion leaned his head on the other’s arm, closing his eyes for a second. The crisp fall air was chilly and he was thankful for his scarf, even if it was almost too big and chunky.

“I love the fall.” Zexion murmured, a couple leaves crunching under his boots, “It’s so relaxing…”

“Plus, you love Halloween.” Axel pointed out, “And all things spooky.”

“I do, don’t I?” Zexion chuckled, shaking his head as they arrived at the building. Leaning up on his toes, he delighted in Axel leaning down to kiss him again.

“You do,” Axel replied against his lips, holding the other close as they shared in another long kiss. Zexion didn’t realize how long they had been kissing until his phone began to sing, reminding him that he had a minute left to make it to class. Eyes popping open wide, he pecked Axel’s lips once more before ducking around him.

“I’m almost late! See you later!” He called over his shoulder, rushing into the building to try and make it to Vexen’s class on time.

“I can’t believe Luxord won’t bet against you. He bets against everyone.” Axel sighed softly, shaking his head. “It’s like he’s scared, he was so adamant about it.”

Everyone had gathered at Luxord’s house for poker that night, and Vexen had brought Zexion along. He played the game like Luxord did, counting cards and folding a lot in the beginning, but in the end, he’d left with everyone’s munny.

“I think he just knows my tricks to play, he knows I’m the best and he won’t take the bet against me because we’d never finish playing.” Zexion smiled slightly, flicking his hair out of his face, watching Axel as he adjusted something on Zexion’s desk.

“You were cheating, weren’t you?”

“I still won the pot.” He replied, shrugging slightly as he placed a few more books on his desk. Zexion was always reading in his spare time, and Axel liked how he smelled like an old library all the time. But he was giving a nonanswer, and Axel knew that that meant that he had definitely cheated.

“That you did.” Axel chuckled, slouching slightly as he paced the room towards the other, taking his waist with his hands. Turning him, Axel kissed him softly on the lips. “But did you have to take all my munny, too?”

“Yes. That’s the point of poker.” He chuckled, “I’ll buy us dinner to celebrate?”

“Yeah, that sounds good. I think I want pizza.”

“Pizza sounds excellent.”

What are some popular tropes in BL that have died out? And what are some tropes you think will slowly phase out or transform? I was just thinking today how manga has evolved in the 20 years I've been reading it (and then had a moment of feeling old af) and was curious about dramas.

What a WONDERFUL ask! Thank you. I cannot tell you how thrilled I am to tackle this question and I really hope others will weigh in, because i am sure i am forgetting something.

Here we go!

ONCE POPULAR BL TROPES THAT HAVE DIED

1. Kidnapping for Love

My goodness this was once a big one. Putting aside Because of You (I have many thoughts on Taiwan's love of bad old tropes), 2016′s Addicted Heroin was the last major BL to employ this trope. It used to be SO POPULAR. A hearty dose of early BL, particularly the dark stuff out of Japan and China, used the kidnapping trope. By comparison, it is super rare now. I anticipate its resurgence only if we get a companion rise in mafia, historicals, and dark romance, which unless funding materializes, I don’t see happening in a big way.

2. Sad Endings

Before Thailand really hit its stride (starting around 2017) a majority of BLs (by far) ended unhappily with the couples separated, dead, stuck in dreamlands, or otherwise depressing apart and unhappy. If they did get together, the uke was often disfigured or crippled. There were lots of murders and suicides. It was a rotating buffet of “how many ways can we kill the gays?” Fortunately, those darks days seem to be mostly behind us. And i really think we can thank Thailand for that.

Everyone say: “Thank you, Thailand.”

3. Taboo Tropes

We used to get a lot of May/December, Teacher/Student, and Stepbrothers wanna bone tropes. Yaoi started these and Japan and Taiwan will still pick up and play with them, but percentage-wise since China left the scene, they are becoming much less common. I think that’s partly because gay used to be strongly considered/associated with taboo, thus to push the boundaries with other taboos using a gay couple was considered a companion titillation. Bonus squick for everyone! Thank heavens they seem to be fading away and fans respond vocally and negatively to their presence (see H4).

4. Whipping Boy

Like kidnapping, i think this trope is pretty much dead. This is the poor kid raised in the rich kid’s household expressly to service him. We kinda saw it with Golden Blood, but the original whipping boy was always a suffering uke who was household sub, slaving his identity to his wealthy master/boss, giving his everything to that one seme, including his body. China’s Irresistible Love duology is the prefect version of this trope (also TulHin in A Chance at Love). Japan, of course, has picked this one up in the seme (attack dog) variant for My Beautiful Man. So it’s not totally dead. But that’s japan for you.

TROPES DOOMED TO SLOWLY PHASE OUT OR TRANSFORM

1. Punch down humor & queer othering

Punch down humor vilifying femme, butch, trans, and other visually queer characters is slowly starting to be less common and occasionally be directly addressed. It’s taking a while but with Taiwan, the Philippines and, to a certain extent, Vietnam I think we will see more queer rep and less queer vilification leaking into Thai stuff. And in BL where Thailand goes others will follow. Hopefully, we will also start to get more queer domesticity as a side effect. (Thailand is making big strides in 2022.)

2. Gay for You

I think the straights are starting to get that is a very ugly thing to do to a character. Once MAME puts an out pansexual in her series, after being one of the first to put an out bisexual into BL, you gotta give Thailand some credit. I think BL wants to be hip and modern and if that means using the lingo the queer kids are using (semantics are super important), and that in turn leads to normalization and acceptance? I’ll take it. And in BL where Thailand goes... (to be fair Taiwan is pretty much there).

3. Size Differential Fetish

I think seme/uke in some form or another will stick around for a very long time, but I think the visual depiction of the seme as significantly taller then the uke will probably become less common. Partly because of casting constraints. I think directors are going to prioritize good chemistry and on screen comfort between their leads over perfect visuals. Taiwan and the Philippines have pretty much given up on this aspect. Korean only really bothers with a school setting. I think we are going to see Vietnam and Thailand follow. The Thai pulps are already leaning this way.

4. School Settings

Early live action yaoi from Japan gave us a lot of workplace set BL. Early stuff from Korea, too. Then Thailand firmly moved us into high school and university for what seems to be the requisite 4 years (for reasons of expense - they’re cheep to make). I think we are going to see a lot more non-school settings going forward - especially from Taiwan, Vietnam, and the Philippines. Thailand even seems to be getting in on it by way of cafes and restaurants. The audience is excited about this and the production companies can cut costs by sizing down the cast.

5. Friends to Lovers

I think we are going to see a lot more complex origin tropes than we have. Much less plain old friends to lovers or enemies to lovers. We will still get romance tropes like cohabitation but they will be Be Loved In House or To My Star style, not just college roommates something more nuanced. We will probably get more fake dating, paranormal elements, secret lovers, fuck buddies, and so forth. I would be shocked if we didn’t see some messy “my sister’s ex” or “my best friend’s younger brother” or “my sister-in-law’s brother” extended family taboo come into play. Possibly combined with “home for the holidays” style romances, probably from those who go shorter run and can get domestic like Taiwan, Vietnam, or Japan. “Boss’s spoiled son want’s me” is also a good one we haven’t seen recently. These all are super popular in gay romances and great ways to get tons of tension outside of an education environment.

VISUAL TROPES I DIDN’T SEE MUCH OF IN 2021

Share My Earbuds? - seems to be fading away. Perhaps because 2gether kinda owns this one and feel tired? Or perhaps with the rise of ear pods it’s just the tech is too old fashioned.

Post-it Love Note - too overdone in 2020 for anyone to use this year?

Bath Time! - I’ve stopped keeping track of this one because it’s more all romance than just BL and Tumblr gods get mad at me when I show too much flesh. But showering or bathing together seems to be departing all but the highest of heat BLs.

Kiss Me In The Car - aside from Gen Y this one seems to be entirely abandoned in favor of “I’m just doing up your seatbelt for you” as an excuse to execute a variation on the aggressive loom trope.

Clutch That Pillow - there were a few of these this year, but none struck me as particularly significant.

It's A.C 197 and our favorite gundam pilots are now part of society. For them life is calm.

Too bad calm never stays when it comes to them.

After several incidents of spacing out, Heero discovers that he is suffering from a form of brain damage as a result of his failed self detonation attempt during the war. A side effect is that Heero can't clearly remember his memories from before the war but he does remember two things: That he has a brother and that he knows a girl that he has a connection to. When a search ends up revealing a place called Kaweneshi City, the pilots decide to take a journey there to find answers. Will Heero find the answers he needs or will the trip be for naught? Or will the pilots find something else along the way instead?
