A post about Alastor turning into a kid prompted a spiraling daydream wherein Husk gets thrown to Earth in the past. Sometime between 1905 and 1912 ish. He's a demon so of course people are fucking terrified of him so he takes off running through the back alleys, hiding in the shadows, and ends up crashing through the window of someone's house trying to stay out of sight. The house was dark so he thought it was empty, so Husk is completely shocked when he brushes himself off and turns to find a very familiar kid staring up at him.
All things considered, kiddo Alastor is ENTIRELY too calm about the giant winged cat monster with four-inch talons and wicked yellow fangs that came barrelling in through his bedroom window. Not that Husk is complaining, since the kid sneaks him some food and a beer. He's less than thrilled when little Alastor suggests he live in the closet as a pet, but at least he has somewhere he can stay out of sight until he figures out how to get back where he belongs...
The first night, Husk is awoken by the sound of furious yells through the door. Glass shattering. A muffled grunt. Slowly he pushes open the closet door to see Alastor huddled against the wall with a large man towering over him, reeking of beer with his fist raised.
Husk doesn't stop to think about the fact that this is a living human who won't respawn like all of the demons he's killed in Hell. One quick slice of his claws and it's over. The drunk bastard is dead. The hid is staring up at Husk, spattered in the man's blood.
Now, Husk doesn't regret putting the mean bastard down, but he knows he can't stay. So he tells Alastor to say a robber broke in and fled out the window when things got violent. Only, Alastor wants to go with Husk. Husk asks about Alastor's mother, and the look on the kid's face says it all. But Husk doesn't need a brat weighing him down and the kid doesn't need to get mixed up with demons so Husk just sweeps out the window, intent on leaving Alastor behind.
Only, Alastor follows him right outside, slicing himself on a piece of broken glass in his desperation not to be left behind. There's a lot of screaming and crying and Husk frantically looking around in case someone's heard before he finally cracks and agrees to take Alastor with him.
Cue the adventures of the alcoholic homeless cat demon and his tiny boss he accidentally kidnadopted as he tries to figure out a way back home while also searching for a safe place he can dump the brat.
Including such shenanigans as:
Husk bundled up in a trench coat, 3 sweaters, 7 scarves, a hat, a pair of mittens, and heavy boots, in Louisiana, IN THE SUMMER, asking around for a job.
Beby Alastor happily playing with Husk's wings (the mental image that convinced me to actually type all this out).
Husk teaching Alastor how to play poker and regretting it when not two games later, the kid is cleaning him out (they're betting bottle caps).
Husk's debut as a street magician, still dressed in aforementioned trench coats and scarves. He hates every moment of it but Alastor loves it, the little menace.

Rayday's Swap AU ~ Angel Dust

Here's the first design I did for my silly lil' AU! Swap Angel Dust ( meaning he has the personality of Valentino and all )

The black sclera - I know about the theory that characters with a/two black sclera(e) have sold their soul and all, but since that's not entirely confirmed ( and also has questionable due to Husk's flashback to when he lost his soul to Alastor or whatever where he has black sclerae before losing ) I decided to keep it.
The curly-er hair/heart motif - I tried to give Angel more of a heart motif as I thought it'd fit ( not to mention Valentino sort of has a heart motif. ) I also just like adding heart-shapes into character's hairs whenever it's fitting. :3
Freckles/facial markings - I decided to make it a single heart on his right cheek because having multiple ( hearts or dots ) on his face was cluttering it up.
His golden tooth - Yes, I know it's on the "wrong" side. I just thought it'd balance out the heaviness in terms of darkness/detail. ( Dark sclera to his left, freckle/facial mark to his right, golden tooth to his left. )
Spider mandibles/abdomen - Since Angel's original design doesn't have much of a spider motif, apart from the multiple limbs, there isn't much the screams "spider." The fact that Valentino is pretty clearly a moth also helped with this decision, which might mean I'll turn down the moth motifs for Valentino ( we'll see though when I get around to him. )
Arm fluff - The arm fluff servers to emulate the wing-sleeves Valentino has in the actual show, but in a way that makes more sense if you ask me ( cuz where tf does the wing sleeves go when he's not wearing his wings as a coat??? ) It also just adds a lil' bit more character imo.
Hands/nails - This was mostly inspired by actual spider feet ( most spider feet are surprisingly cute tbh ) Their feet are basically two claws hidden behind a bunch of fluff that sort of looks like two toes/hooves. The hands and nails both count for the claws of actual spider's feet. Do note that his feet look a lot more similar to spiders' though. Just thought I'd mention.
No coat - The silhouette was already pretty busy with the arm fluff and abdomen, and I honestly wasn't willing to get rid of either. This meant I had to sacrifice the coat, sadly, though I think it leans into another motif I tried to lean into a little more:
Drag queen inspo - Simply put I tried to lean into the drag queen thing a little more. I know he's not supposed to be in drag 24/7, but still. Also, yes, I know about the stereotypes about drag queens being predators, but a drag queen can be a bad person without it being blamed on them being drag, similar to how a gay person can be horrid without the horridness stemming from them being gay.
Why Angel is suddenly thick as fuck and big ass hips - The reason why he got thunder thighs and wide hips suddenly is cuz of padding. He's still skinny as fuck underneath all that. It's also why I added no fluff to his thighs, as he's wearing white stockings over the padding to hide it better/keep it in place and all, all the while making it seem it's actually part of his body.
Height - Characters keep their height despite being swapped in my swap AU. This means Angel is like 8 ft or something.
Color scheme - I've decided to mix color schemes for most- if not all- characters. This means I'll pull some colors from their original color scheme, while others are pulled from the character they're being swapped with. In Angel's case I obviously got his body colors from his original design, while his one-piece(?) main color comes from Valentino's design.
Why there's no name change - I've decided to switch The Vees over to The As. It was a bit hard finding someone to swap Velvette with, but I figured it out in the end. I just need to actually design the swap design and all.

Hazbin Hotel - Vaggie Finale Thoughts
My thoughts on Vaggie are… complicated. I think the last two episodes of season 1 do a really good job with her and I love the beats her character hits, but the rest of the season didn’t build up to some of these beats the way they should have to make all of them hit as hard as they could.
I’m just going to jump right in to explain what I mean.

Vaggie’s role in episode 7 where she has to go convince Carmilla to help them face the angels is at its core fantastic and the song that they get together is a banger, but the basis for this song– that Vaggie is being driven by vengeance and has to fight for love instead– rings hollow. 
Everything Vaggie has done this season has been for love. She’s been nothing but supportive of Charlie, putting all her effort into the hotel and Charlie’s mission. Her song and arc in episode 3 surround Vaggie’s belief and love for Charlie. Vaggie fighting for love has never been the central issue of her character because she’s been doing it all along.

I like the idea of Vaggie being driven by vengeance, considering how brutally Lute mutilated her and how she was cast out of heaven for the “horrible” offense of hesitating to kill a child this would make sense for her character, but this wasn’t shown at any point prior to this song. 
Where was this thirst for vengeance when she came face to face with Adam and Lute in the hotel room? Where was Vaggie’s anger at heaven when Charlie was calling out their hypocrisy? At what point in this season did Vaggie choose vengeance over her love and support for Charlie?

If vengeance was what was really driving her character then Vaggie would be pushing Charlie to call out heaven. She would take some impulsive actions to strike back that put Charlie’s goals in danger. She wouldn’t be the one telling Charlie to keep a cool head or singing about supporting Charlie no matter what.
This is the issue that’s been plaguing Vaggie this entire season. So much of her character has been tell rather than show. We were told by Husk that Vaggie hates herself. We were told by Carmilla that Vaggie was driven by vengeance. When Vaggie is faced with the decision to support Charlie against heaven or side with heaven to keep her secret the narrative lets Vaggie just not make a choice.
She doesn’t get to show her character and flaws through her actions. At least not the ones the show says she has.
I think this problem is a bit more obvious because when the show does build up something with her character it is really good.

Vaggie being the one to reach out to and convince Carmilla to help their cause is a great beat. We see early on that Vaggie isn’t a people person. She has trouble trusting and/or inspiring others, but here we get to see her reach out to and connect with someone else, and it's through this understanding the two have that she is able to get Carmilla to help her (by training her to fight angels) and the hotel (by providing weapons).

This exact struggle is also reflected in the moments with the hotel residents. Throughout the season Vaggie has always come across as being on their level. Charlie is well-meaning, but because of her privileged upbringing she has a very black and white view of redemption and struggles to deal with the more serious mental health issues that the hotel residents face. Whereas Vaggie is more jaded and has made massive mistakes in the past.
The other hotel residents can understand her struggle to do the right thing and redeem herself, which is why it was impactful to have Vaggie be the one to let them know that they can leave and that she’s the first one to see that they stayed. It emphasized the connection between them.

Vaggie’s fight with Lute was also amazing. Lute was the angel that cast her out, ripping out her eye and cutting off her wings. There’s a personal connection there that makes this battle investing. The way their battle ends really emphasizes the conflict between Charlie and heaven in episode 6 by showing that Vaggie, someone cast out of heaven, is more worthy of heaven and angel wings than Lute, Adam’s right-hand woman, through her decision to choose love over hate and spare Lute’s life.
It’s these moments that show the full potential that Vaggie has as a character and put the moments that they fumbled in stark contrast.
I really like this show, but I do think it has flaws. Vaggie’s character is a prime example of how the pacing of this season made certain character arcs suffer. 
I'm hopeful that the show can improve on some of these issues now that it officially has a season 2 and that it was the biggest animated release on Amazon Prime (which is impressive because The Legend of Vox Machina had the massive already established fanbase of critical role watching it). I really enjoyed watching this season week to week and can’t wait for what they have in store for us next.

Side note: The moment where Vaggie spared Lute is where she should have gotten her angel wings and specifically she should have gotten Lute’s angel wings. This would just heighten the thematic importance of this moment and show through Vaggie’s mercy– the very thing that got her kicked out of the exorcists– she has shown that she is more worthy of being an angel than Lute. I can’t take credit for this. I heard it from Sarcastic Chorus.

Alastor's Deal: A Theory

Apologies if all of this has been said before, but my brain has felt like Niffty on caffeine the last 24 hours and it must be purged.
So, we all know that Alastor has made some sort of deal. That was obvious back when Husk made his “on a leash” comment and was fully confirmed during Alastor’s breakdown, wherein he laments that the “constraints of my deal must have a back door.” The big questions then are with who and for what? Like many, I’m in the “Alastor made a deal with Lilith” camp.
Let’s move through this semi-chronologically.
We know, based on the final scene of Season One, that Lilith has made her own deal to stay in Heaven and that if she doesn’t stop Charlie from “threatening the very foundation” of the realm then the deal is off. This is the primary motivation we’ve seen from the Heaven higher-ups this whole show: protecting Heaven’s power dynamics at best and doing so by hellish genocide at worst. If Lilith made a deal with the angels to get access to Heaven, what else would they want beyond further assurance that her domain will never rise up against them? Taking her off the battlefield would likewise be a decisive blow as we’re told in the prologue that it’s her singing that inspires Hell and Hell’s population that helps grow her power. Take Lilith away and there’s no leader left to organize a revolt.
(Except Charlie. More on that in a bit.)
So either Lilith—newly separated from Lucifer, disgusted by this eternal punishment—or the angels—terrified by her leadership, Hell’s growing population, the ongoing threat of revolt—approach the other and go, ‘You get a spot in paradise and you get reassurance against anyone uprooting the status quo.’ Right from the start it struck me as odd that Heaven only has this seemingly random Extermination once a year as a way of maintaining control. Meaning, the angels fly down and seem to go after any citizen who’s unlucky enough to be in their way, just the average Joes that wouldn’t be perceived as a threat. So what about the Overlords? They’re the ones with the real power and yet they’re simultaneously the ones who are smart enough to lay low during Extermination Day. As far as we’ve seen, there’s no organized efforts to go after the seat of Hell’s political power: Adam doesn’t attack the Princess until she personally pisses him off and Carmilla seems to run into the angels only by accident. Why in the world would Heaven try to keep Hell in its place by killing the citizens who (supposedly—this is an institution that very much underestimates the underdog/group efforts) can’t do anything to hurt them?
The answer is they wouldn’t. Extermination, while useful in terms of striking fear and hopelessness in the citizens, as well as keeping Hell’s population in line, is also a bit of a decoy. Heaven is going after the Overlords. They’re just smart enough to do so quietly.

We’re back to Lilith. She gets a spot in Heaven. In return, she assists Heaven in undermining the true seat of Hell’s power (outside herself and her own family): the Overlords. How to do that though? Staying in paradise precludes going down and doing the dirty work herself, to say nothing of how not subtle having the Queen commit murders would be.
Enter Alastor.
Need someone to commit murders for you? Snag a serial killer! I’ve seen a couple people claim that Alastor’s deal is limiting his power— based primarily on the “unclip my wings” comment—but that’s never tracked for me. If Alastor was already powerful, even more-so than he is now, he’d have no reason to make a deal in the first place. This man, by his own musical admission, is not altruistic. Unless there was some threat to his existence that we don’t know about yet that forced him into a corner, power is the only thing he’d make a deal for.
So you’re Lilith. You need a personal hitman to keep Heaven happy. Here’s an egotistical, power-hungry serial killer who’ll do anything to be on top—even sell his soul. So you make him powerful, though with the caveat that he must use that power at your command. Alastor comes out of nowhere then, this overnight success, and he immediately targets a bunch of Overlords. Not all of them. Not enough for Hell to crumble, or for anyone to become suspicious that this is more than just one homicidal demon enjoying himself, but enough to ensure that what power Hell is consolidating never gets out of hand. I think Alastor’s initial arrival on the scene was a kind of test period for Lilith. Once he proved that their plan would work, she was given access to Heaven. That was seven years ago. Lilith disappears and Alastor conveniently disappears along with her. Why? No enough info yet, but I think that timing lends weight to the theory that his deal is tied up with hers.
Why is Alastor so desperate now? Well, a number of reasons, the most obvious of which is that his soul is presumably on the line. Much like his threats towards Husk, Alastor knows that he’s got a metaphorical gun pointed towards his head at all times. He’s on this “leash” and if we know anything about this man, it’s that he needs to be the one fully in control—which he’s very much not at the moment. Alastor needs to be the one “pulling all the strings,” not acting as the puppet for someone else. I further wonder what might have happened in those seven years to potentially scare him. (Was he in Heaven? Perhaps chained for a time? Let out only when his Master deems him useful again?). I further wonder how his own (slow as molasses) redemption is influencing things. Despite his claims to the contrary, Alastor does care for people—there’s a whole meta about that on its way—and Rosie is very much included in that select group. The fandom has done a great job of pointing out all the ways their friendship comes across as genuine so I won’t hash that out here. Suffice to say, Rosie is one of the few people Alastor is close to pre-hotel, but she’s also an Overlord. If this theory holds any weight it means that at any point he could be given the order to kill her. (If he can, of course. He calls her the most “dangerous” of them all). That's not going to sit well with him.

So Alastor wants out on his deal, right? Well... kind of. See, I don’t think he actually wants to break the deal because that would mean he loses all the power he gained from it. Notably, Alastor also doesn’t say he wants to break it, he says that the “constraints of my deal must have a back door.” He’s looking for a loophole, a way to break the limitations he’s currently under, but not break the deal itself. Here’s an example that’s really just an excuse for me to throw out a headcanon I have:
Demon: I will give you power, but you are not allowed to say where it comes from Alastor: Hmm. I want the power and to be able to talk about where I got it Alastor: What was that exact wording again? I’m not allowed to say anything? Well, I’m a radio host. I’ll just have other peoples' voices say it for me! Alastor: Now I get both :)
That’s another aspect to all this that fits nicely with Heaven being at the root of this deal: of course they wouldn’t want Alastor blabbing. Not just because Hell can’t know about their plan, but likewise because most in Heaven are ignorant of the measures they’re taking too. The fandom has already pointed out the stitching around Alastor’s mouth—colored green to show it’s deal magic—as well as his annoyance when people don’t question is odd absences and sudden power ups. To be clear, I 100% think that scene with the Overlords is Alastor just getting pissy that no one gives a shit about him—this guy needs to be the center of attention 24/7—but underneath that may be legitimate frustration that no one is helping him find the loopholes of this deal. He knows he can’t speak about it, but he’s also hoping to find that “back door” to his limitations. That’s a lot easier to do if others are helping him poke and prod at these constraints.
Which brings me to Husk. Anyone else find it odd that he knows about this super secret deal when no one else seems to? At least, he knows enough to realize that Alastor is “on a leash.” My pet theory here is that Husk is the first soul Alastor collected. Mimzy’s flashback shows Alastor hunting and presumably killing those other Overlords, putting their souls into his radio show for all of Hell to hear (which would be another great fear tactic that benefits Heaven). However, for whatever reason he decides to take an Overlord’s soul one night, rather than outright killing him, and lo and behold, that connection gives Husk some insight into Alastor. Or, conversely, that ownership allows Alastor to speak more freely than he can with anyone else. Regardless, Husk is a potential asset now. No, he can’t go blabbing about Alastor’s deal and reminding him of the insult of being chained—Alastor will still kill him if he goes too far—but for now there’s potential in someone, someone Alastor has control over, knowing that a deal exists. He hasn’t found a way to gain freedom yet while maintaining his power, but Alastor is smart enough to surround himself with people who he can force/manipulate into doing the job for him, once he figures out what role they might play.

Next up then is Charlie. Charlie who is powerful by virtue of being the Princess of Hell. Charlie who is Lilith’s daughter and now owes Alastor a favor (something like, perhaps, “Help me circumvent the limitations of my deal with your mom”?) Charlie who possesses her mother’s ability to inspire through song, a talent that Alastor is THRILLED to see develop at Cannibal Town.
Surprised? Why, I knew she could do it all along She’s filled with potential that I could guide Stick with her, you’ll be on the winning side!
Alastor is playing the long game. Pretend to be the powerful, influential Princess’ friend, become the confidant of Lilith’s darling girl, make a broad-stroke deal with her that can only benefit you, and you’ve set the stage for sometime, somehow, freeing yourself of the mess you’ve gotten into. (Of course, what Alastor can’t admit yet is that pretending to be someone’s friend often results in real friendship developing. Get loved, idiot.) It’s only when Alastor’s plan nearly gets him killed that he has a full-blown panic attack. I almost died for them? I’m supposed to be manipulating them to help me! WHAT THE FUCK?

Three other points of note:
1. It’s unclear how much Heaven knows about the specifics of their own deal. Given that Adam has no idea who Alastor is when they fight, yet the final scene implies that he made the actual deal with Lilith, it’s possible she promised to take out Overlords—and delivered—but never told them precisely how she was accomplishing this. Knowing the kind of woman Lilith is likely to be, no doubt she has further plans up her own sleeve.
2. Alastor’s tune changes drastically while talking privately to Vox. It’s obvious that he’s generally unconcerned with his death threats and absolutely plays that up in their duet, but once they’re alone Alastor because incredibly threatening, taking on his demon form and promising to make Vox wish he’d stayed gone. I don’t think he cares much about Vox himself, rather, as another Overlord Vox is automatically in Alastor’s crosshairs. He hasn’t been given the order to kill the Vs yet, but they’re his enemy by virtue of the deal. You’re going to end me? No, no, no, my entire purpose here is to end you.
3. Alastor fucking hates angels. Or rather, I should say he hates angels high on the celestial totem pole. Battle grunts like Vaggie are fine—he’s got no beef with them outside of them trying to exterminate everyone—but someone like Lucifer, a former powerhouse of Heaven? Or Adam, one of those currently in charge? Alastor despises them both on sight. It’s notable to me that they’re the only two he curses out: “Fuck you” to Lucifer and “I’m going to end your fucking life” to Adam. (Well, except calling Susan a “bitch,” but Susan is an exception lol). Alastor always has it together and prizes his manners up until he meets an angel who represents the top dog group who has chained him. Then he looses his cool. Toss in the fact that Lucifer is Lilith’s former husband and Adam is the one who supposedly made the deal with Lilith and... yeah. Alastor is holding a hell of a grudge. That’s likewise how I read the “unclip my wings” line. Not an indication that Alastor was more powerful pre-deal, but a general way of expressing that he’s constrained in other ways while ALSO hinting at the source. It’s ironic that his own (non-existent) wings are clipped when it’s the winged bastards who have him under their thumb.
This is also where I’m thinking/hoping Alastor’s story might go. He spends more time trying to have his cake and eat it too—possessing Lilith’s Overlord-killing power without being a servant to Heaven anymore—probably screwing over many of his new relationships in the process. Somehow his circumstances come to light (via Husk?), Charlie forgives him, she finds a way to break the deal entirely (perhaps by persuading her mom via duet), and Alastor is left... as Alastor. Just Alastor—sinner, former human, redeemable. Still the radio demon, but not very fearsome anymore. He lacks the power that’s defined him for who knows how long now and must grapple with just being himself: vulnerable and truly reliant on the family he’s built to protect him.
(GET LOVED, IDIOT)
So to recap:
Lilith wants access to Heaven
Heaven wants Hell’s power kept in check in a way that won’t draw too much attention
Lilith makes a deal with a power-hungry serial killer, giving him the ability to take out Overlords for them
Alastor kills a bunch to undermine the threat Hell poses
Her part of the deal proven to be sound, Lilith retires to a celestial beach
Her homicidal pet is kept in line for a time, perhaps put in the cage until useful again
Alastor returns and immediately inserts himself into Charlie’s life, the one person who might be able to help him by virtue of her political and familial position
He spends months manipulating her to like him/orchestrating a deal
He comes to legitimately like her
Nearly dies for her and her friends
Panics about it
Reasserts his original goal to maintain power while getting off his “leash” because fuck friendship and all that
The only thing that didn’t sit right with me was Alastor’s smile. Based on what we’ve seen, this is another constraint of the deal. Alastor’s warning to Charlie that his smile hides his real emotional state was a clue, but I think it’s magical nature is confirmed in the radio tower post-fight with Adam. There’s no audience there for Alastor to perform for. He’s the lowest we’ve ever seen him. If there was ever a time where he’d drop the happy-go-lucky facade it’s now... but he doesn’t. He can’t. Which didn’t make sense to me given all of the above. Why the hell would anyone need to force Alastor to smile if they just want a powerful attack dog?
This rotated in my head like a rotisserie chicken for a while until it hit me that they wouldn’t. Because it’s not about a need, it’s about being mean. Heaven has shown time and time again that they’re not merely engaging in Extermination because they see it as a necessary evil, they LIKE it. It’s fun for them. The killing of demons and their torture beforehand is a kind of entertainment that they—particularly Adam’s group of soldiers—frequently indulges in. They wouldn’t make Alastor smile for any practical reason. They’d do it simply because they could.
Look how happy he is acting as our little pet. It’s a sentiment that Alastor repeats for Husk, likely as a way of grasping at control within his own, vulnerable situation.
In addition, this is a little, sadistic inside joke for the angels. Throughout my whole binge the fixed nature of Alastor’s smile looked so familiar and I couldn’t place it, not until I realized that the angels didn’t literally have those faces.

They’re wearing masks. The masks they wear into battle show fixed, endless grins as they indulge in slaughter. Now, as their pet, Alastor is forced to wear a mask as well, one that mimics the dress-code for killing his people.
Smile, Alastor. You’re the Exterminator.

Overtime
On his day off, Husk gets a visit from Alastor. It's routine.

It’s the creak of the bed that finally wakes Husk up. Wide-eyed. Fur standing on end. Vulnerable.
Maybe he should be surprised, but he's not at all. All he can think about is how damn tired he is. He’d already had to deal with errands and stocking up the bar, the crates full of bourbon and absinthe wrecking his back as he carried them. He’d had to deal with multiple grabby hands from the same eight-eyed customer, who whined about not getting his attention. And as well, any weird new activity Charlie was cooking up for the hotel residents, and pulling him into it. Not like Husk’s seeking redemption. He isn’t foolish enough to believe it could ever be for him.
There’s a small dip from behind him, on his bed. Another creak. It’s dark, but Husk doesn’t really need to see. The soft shine of red tells him everything he needs to know.
Another of his boss’s little visits.
Husk’s not alert enough to decide what to do. His limbs still feel heavy and his mouth is all dry from drinking himself to sleep. The weight keeps moving around on top of him, softly treading, like an animal through the brush. What makes it all the more eerie though is that he can’t even hear the shadow over him breathe.
That’s when he feels the hand on his wing. 
He grits his teeth, then shivers. His throat rumbles with a sound he could barely restrain, still moving out of the shades of sleep. 
Husk realizes too late that he’s not wearing anything. He always goes to bed bare, his own fur a bitch to deal with.
Finally, a voice.
“Dear Husker,” Alastor whispers, leaning down just a bit. The filter over his voice seems to dial all the way down to low. “You sleep so deeply. And it’s already past noon.” He tsks. “Such a layabout.”
Husk softly groans, all as Alastor keeps his hand in that same place. “Well, I was sleeping fine before you fucking showed up. And what do you care how I spend my Saturday?”
He doesn’t need to look to know how deep Alastor’s smile is, how it cuts into his face until it’s all he is.
Before Husk can even ask what’s the goddamn occasion now, the hand on his wing shifts. A thumb rubs against his feathers, the palm edging across the bend of his wing. The upper feathers are shorter, but they’re also sensitive. He’d give his own bottle of whiskey away if it meant he’d just have less of these stupid fucking soft spots of his, where any stimulation at all just did something to him.
And Alastor knows just where such spots were. Just right there, at the wing’s curve, where the feathers softened, where the red edges into the black. The wings had always been such a cruel joke, with its alternating patterns that resembled some cheap roulette wheel. It was always the one game it had been impossible for him to cheat at.
Alastor’s fingers curl into his wing, the thumb continuing to rub patterns, as if he’s memorizing every soft thread that makes up Husk’s body.
“Come on, why are you–” Husk cuts himself off, his body still struggling with the depth of his fatigue. Infuriating that this is all it takes for Alastor to get such reactions from him, and that he knows just when to do it.
But, despite it all, Husk finally gets his body to half-turn instead of just stretching like some depraved animal. His room is still covered in shadows, with only barely muted hallway light coming from the doorway crack. 
None of that matters. He can still easily make out Alastor’s face, his smile like a crescent moon shining over dark woods. Red swam over both, its color searing into him. He’s still fully dressed, unlike Husk. As if he had just left a social meeting, and then went to his pet for a little play.
“Are you sure you weren’t just waiting for me?” the demon above him asks with a low laugh. “You reacted just so quickly, even for you.”
Now he’s actively trying to piss Husk off, but then there’s another touch. This time, right at the inside of his right thigh. Husk shivers again, and this time, he can’t help but arch his back, just slightly.
Alastor’s expression doesn’t change, even as his fingers part through the fur, trailing through white and black. Even as his other hand keeps weaving a soft language into Husk’s feathers. He plays his body like an instrument, fingers tapping along invisible keys that make the one beneath him sing in a melody so few others would ever hear.
And Alastor is certainly enjoying the show before him.
It’s hard to escape. It’s hard to want to escape.
But he manages to speak, even when he’s lost to the soft touches, to the way they grip and hold. They don’t let go. The fingers are greedy, and Husk is all too familiar with greed and its call.
“It’s my day off, boss…”
Even an ironclad soul like his deserves a little mercy.
Alastor leans down, never letting his fingers rest. They change course, maybe even change tempo, but the insistent petting and stroking is still enough to make Husk into a useless pile of limbs and heat. “Then perhaps you should work a little bit of overtime for me.”
The fact that he’s trying to crack a fucking joke with me now.
Husk flinches, one eye shutting as another wave of warmth rolls over him. Hard enough to sleep with his wings that keep getting in the way, that he could never hug to his body tight enough so that they just disappear. Because not even just Alastor, but everyone loves to grab them. It’s too much. He hates it. He hates how his body just betrays him like this.
“You don’t pay me enough for this shit,” he shoots out. He manages to keep his voice steady, his tone deep, at least for that. He glares up at Alastor, letting the red light leak into his eyes. It always burns when he does so, looking directly at the Radio Demon. 
It’s like looking at his forthcoming death.
Alastor notices. So, he shuts his eyes. And then, he lets a hand rush up Husk’s thigh, then up his chest, until they reach his chin. He leans further down, and down. And down.
Until the tips of their noses brush against the other. Until Husk can finally hear the soft breathing from Alastor, can feel it against his fur.
“Then how about I give you a goodnight kiss in exchange?” he asks, finally opening his eyes. The glee in them is almost manic. “For always putting up with me.”
All these stupid games Alastor loves to play.
The fingers grip his chin, while the others over his wing continue their dance. “After all, I know that’s what you like.” Then, a wink, almost coy in its motion. “You’ve always been such a romantic.”
It’s stupid how Husk’s breath hitches at the thought, even when a nightmare looms over his bed, because that’s what Alastor is. The Radio Demon is every awful, heartstopping sound in the dark. He is every fleeting shadow that you see out of the corner of your eyes. He is every ancient folktale that elders warn their children about, of the monster that takes those lost souls who live on the fringes. And he eats, and eats, and eats.
But like any shapeshifting monster, Alastor can look as pleasant as he wants. And right now, his voice is soft, and his hands still play Husk for every note he can find.
Husk opens his mouth, trying to breathe. He lets his tongue run over Alastor’s thumb, which presses just against his bottom lip. Everyone does play with his wings, but only Alastor knows just how to use them to full effect.
“Deal,” he says. It’s barely audible, like the last breath of a dying man. But Alastor understands. He always does.
The kiss is different from the touches. Alastor is a hungry demon, and he shows it through his mouth the most. Lips press down deeply over Husk’s own, and sharp teeth clash. It’s hard and biting. The kiss stings Husk’s tongue, overwhelms his mouth. It’s like being force fed poison all the while.
But the poison is spiked, because kissing Alastor is always so, so addictive. Husk leans his head up, drinks from it as much as he can. He feels the hand wander down his feathers, move between them and pull gently. Because he likes the texture, Alastor once said to Husk. It calms him. It’s pleasing.
Sometimes, he even takes a feather for himself, using it as a quill. And Husk has to see it in the boss’s room sometimes, a piece of himself that is being used, again, and again, and again–
Husk’s wings move to stretch and wrap around Alastor, like a shroud made with red and black, studded with stars and symbols. He brings the nightmare closer. It’s only half against his will.
Maybe one day, he can make them both disappear.
“More,” he groans out, staring into the red, like falling into a sky at dusk. “If you’re gonna make me work like this.”
The shadows don’t hide for him. They grow into shapes that stretch from Alastor’s head, that cover up the walls into pitch black. He doesn’t care, feeling the promise of that kiss again as a tongue presses against his lips.
“Oh, Husker. With me, you never have to work a day in your life.”
He’s too lost to get angry at the comment.
Alastor wears Husk’s wings proudly around his shoulders as he steals him away once again.

Keys and Cats
Oh boi! Been doing a little more digital art (seriously, it's addicting). Been learning a lot. Linework is still atrocious but at least I can mask it with shitty backgrounds now! 😂

This is going to be a wombo combo of art and headcannon. So here goes:
I got inspired by this little story here https://archiveofourown.org/works/54281104 by @soot-and-salt
My inspiration led me to think about how that could be a concept to be expanded upon.
So we all know Keekee is sort-of the spirit of the Hazbin Hotel. She is at the same time master key, house pet and she can go(or fly) where she wants and open any door.
Now, I think it would probably be a good idea for normal hotel operations for the hotel manager and the facility manager to also have their own keys. We see throughout the show that Vaggie has to constantly borrow Keekee to do her job. Not very efficient.
That's where other keys and the Cursed Cat Alastor character come in
Personal headcannon ties into how Cursed Cat Alastor could possibly make an appearance in the show and this is how:
-Magical Master Key blanks are generic and literally blank until given to a person by Lucifer
-The keys get infused by the souls of their owners to make them sentient. So the creatures that spring from this are somewhat a reflection of their owners. Not perfectly, of course and the owners don't pour their soul into the object. These keys are NOT horcruxes. It's more a guideline/baseline of what type of creature springs into being.
-The cats that turn into keys and can open every door have their own personalities and are only somewhat aligned to the person that lend their soul to its creation. So basically like Keekee only with a way more nerdy explanation. It just kinda made sense to me that way because of what we see from Charlie and Keekee during the show. I might be too over enthusiastic about this, though! 😂
Enter:
Loom and Ariel.
Since we can't keep calling the character Cursed Cat Alastor, I figured I give him a proper name in my headcannon. So he is called Loom. Like a looming shadow. He has the ability to shadow teleport, similar to Alastor only for Loom the teleport is instantaneous inside the Hotel. Unlike the two girls, he can't fly but he can make himself loooong like a fluffy cat snake (after all, you get longer bellyrubs if your belly is longer! It makes perfect sense! LOL).
He likes bellyrubs and wheedling treats ouf of Lucifer. Because Lucifer has a weakspot for small fluffy animals he always caves. Loom is a chubby round loaf cat with stubby legs. So basically the inverse of Alastor. Which is hilarious. Alastor himself loves his cat because it's just as much an agent of chaos as himself. Loom makes Theremin noises in addition to purring. So when Loom purrs Alastor can add his own background noise /white/grey into the mix to make an entire room sleepy and relaxed.
Ariel was a fun name to pick out because it means 'Lion of God' and that was oddly funny and fitting for a literal winged angel cat.
She is a tall elegant cat with a big fluffy tail. I based her loosely around Duchess from Aristocats. Her highlights and colorpallette are based on Vaggie, of course. I did change the wing color to those of Adams wings because it looked better in contrast to keeping the Vaggie/Exorcist pallette for the wings.
I have a weakspot for kittehs like that. Elegant and cute go very well together. And long fluffy tail is always nice! Like the other two cats Ariel can teleport inside the Hotel and she can fly in general like Keekee, though she has to use her wings to do it. So she doesn't exactly 'float' like we see Keekee do in the show. Ariel has an interesting attachment to Husk. She likes to perch somewhere in the proximity of the bartop (although not directly on it) and watch him work. Although Husk is not a catperson he did come to value her presence over time and sometimes goes over to pet her when nobody is looking.
She likes her ears scratched (especially the folded ear) and Husk is more than happy to oblige. Vaggie is of course overjoyed with her cat. Ariel is best friends with Keekee but the two girls accept Loom in their circle. When they get annoyed by his antics, they just fly out of reach.
Ok this turned out way longer and way weirder than I though. LOL

He doesn't know how to assume his real personality with you, but he tries.
He likes your kisses, especially when they are long and hot.
He likes it when you hug him or hold him by the waist.
You sleep hugging each other. He wraps you around with four arms and buries your face in his fake br3asts.
You and he tend to each other's injuries, since you're always getting into trouble.
You've already fought with Valentino physically, but ended up losing, since he's an overlord. You at least tried for Angel, and Angel felt guilty about it.

Anyway, being aroace, I say that it's kind of difficult to fall in love. Alastor also found it difficult to fall in love with you, but the fact that you were the only one who got a sincere smile from him was undeniable.
It took a while for you to start dating, especially because Rádio Demon was really difficult to win over. It's good that he felt something for you thanks to your personality.
He who asked you to be date him, offering a ring and a deer heart. Romantic? I think so. XD
Bizarre gifts every day when you wake up. He will present you with anything that is pleasant in his eyes, be it dead rats or demon heads. Anyway, don't question it, just accept it, otherwise he'll get a little angry.
He will give you bloody rose bouquets on your dates. Occasionally there will be a heart in the middle, but it will end up eating for you.
He likes to see you smile. He says your smile is the most beautiful of all, except his; for him, his is magnificent.

When someone hurts you, he goes after the guy and makes his life hell. And when I say hell, it's not what you imagine, but worse. No one can hurt his dew.
He likes to have his ears petted and he likes it when you hold his horns, even though they are sensitive.
He doesn't show much affection in public, but he tries to stay close to you to keep you safe enough.

The gang is finished, everyone has complete bases. So! Detailed descriptions of my changes below 👇 Alan is not included because he already has a description in the post I introduced him and the most recent post about Alan.
Charlie- I decided to go more the "goat" route with her design. She is nearly as tall as Angel Dust, she just seems shorter than she should because of her pose. She has small feathered wings, to represent her angel heritage, however they are small because they are underdeveloped. She is unable to fly as she cannot move them to the extent needed for flight capability, she can barely move them at all, nor can she tuck or fold them. I gave her more definite horns with a floating apple motif at the top, think of it like jewelry. She often goes by Charlotte although her friends and loved ones call her Charlie.
Vox- Vox is the Hotel Benefactor in this AU and supports Charlie in her ventures. He acts more like a solid father figure than Alastor and is more of an open person. When he was alive, he was a TV host. A charming personality and a kind man at heart. In '55 he was briefly drafted into the Vietnam War until he was too injured to continue and was sent home. He regretted many of the decisions he had to make there, feeling like a monster as he was only 25 at the time. When he returned home he recovered some and resumed his work, this time opting to produce affordable technology for those who could not afford it. Unfortunately this would be his demise. One poorly timed installation of a television set during a thunderstorm led to him being struck by lightning. He still distributes tech after his death through his company Voxtech Industries. I made him a little bulkier than the original and gave him a more 50's look, complete with a 50's TV. He is also still an Overlord.
Niffty- I decided to make her more bug like. I took inspiration from a tortoise beetle and a stag beetle.I didn't change too much with her personality wise, she is still a manic, but she puts more effort into caring for those who can't care for themselves... in her own weird and twisted ways. She runs a company know as NCRIM or Niffty's Cleaning and Revitalizing Interpersonal Maintenance, and she is an Overlord.
Husk- I didn't change too much, his concept is pretty solid to me as a surface level concept. I only tweaked slight things to tend to my au better. In this au he is still an Overlord and still runs his casino.
Angel Dust- I changed Angel quite a bit design wise, but not so much personality. Angel still works for Valentino, still a porn star, and will still love Husk. For the design, I made Angel still very tall and slim, but I gave him more of a solid chest. I like the idea of him having the fluffy chest, but I feel like the "fluff" doesn't move as it should in the show, it is just fluff after all, so it shouldn't be as solid as it seems to be. I also gave Angel some mandibles and the "spider butt". I also changed Angel's hair because it looks right for the show but it looks off for me personally. I also gave him the "small spider feet" I don't really know how to call it, but I gave him thin feet. I also moved his arms up to the shoulder with the other pair, because anatomy I guess, it just made more sense to me.
Sir Pentious- I didn't really change pentious, he's still pretty much the same except for the eye placements on his inner hood and tail. His personality isn't really different either.
Vaggie- I changed quite a bit for Vaggie. I decided to lean into the moth theme more and bring that put in her design. I gave her moth wings and antenna and more anthropomorphic legs. I like to think that the moth look came after her fall, as the time she's spent in hell has changed her like metamorphosis. So the longer she stays in hell the more it influences her, the more she becomes a part of hell. She is heaven born in this au so she would assimilate into being a hell born. I also changed the design of her Spear for no apparent reason other than why not.
Cherry Bomb- She is pretty different than in the show. I haven't changed her personality but her physical appearance is different. I've decided to make her bombs more of a physical part of herself. She has what I depict as horns that "grow" her bombs as a biological process. Like how one kind of insect I can't remember the name of does. I also made her feet into heels, like permanent pumps.
Lucifer- I lent into the goat for the legs to relate him to Charlie more as well as the horns with the apple motif. For his wings, I heard somewhere [don't quote me on this I've never read the bible] I think it was from LovesArt123, that when Lucifer fell his wings burnt and became more like bat wings in structure. I sort of did the same thing for his tail as well. I gave him more of a proper halo, I honestly wasn't planning that but I rolled with it, and I gave him more than one pair of eyes. He's the king of hell, shouldn't he have more eyes to view others with? The pose I used had the person carrying a lantern and I thought it would be funny if he just lanterns to head to the fridge for depression food at night. So he uses lanterns to navigate at night, not that he can't see in the dark because he can, it's others not realizing he's there that he uses the lantern.

Crymini's CG is Husk, and Angel is her big brother. Charlie or Cherri will babysit if Husk is busy
Angel helps with the babysitting when he's not regressed

Crymini has three favorite stuffies: two stuffed bunnies and a stuffed kitten (From left to right: Ace, Spade, and Ramona)

Crymini struggles with her emotions and communicating her needs. She will throw tantrums
Luckily, her CG and babysitters are understanding and patient and will help her calm down. She doesn't have timeouts for tantrums. Instead, she has time-ins
Crymini is extremely pouty at times and will pout when she doesn't get her way
When Crymini's headspace is very tiny, she will play with Husk's ears and wings. He doesn't really mind as long as she's gentle
Crymini has been put in timeout for drawing on the walls multiple times
She is a biter and will bite anyone and anything (nothing dangerous or anything that will make her sick, don't worry. Just furniture, pillows, and blankets). She has been firmly, yet gently scolded for it and given a teether, chewelry, or paci (depending on how old she feels at the moment) every time
Hates naptime and bedtime. She acts like Bluey during the episode "Fruitbat" and will be adamant about staying up late. Her CG and babysitters are patient with her and will make her naptime and bedtime routines fun with games. Works like a charm every time 👍
Her favorite foods are grilled cheese and fruit
Husk and Charlie are adamant in making sure Crymini drinks water and eats healthy (she's also given milk and juice). Angel and Cherri are the same, but they are less strict and will sneak Crymini junk food and soda when Husk and Charlie aren't around. However, it leaves the little going through a sugar rush
Adores The Nightmare Before Christmas, Corpse Bride, Coraline, ParaNorman, Monster House, Dan Vs., The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy, Hi Hi Puffy AmiYumi, Sushi Pack, Regular Show, Adventure Time, Yellow Submarine, The Muppets Mayhem, Fraggle Rock, Nimona, Dead End: Paranormal Park, and Invader Zim! She'll watch Invader Zim with Angel a lot since they both love the show (see my Regressor! Angel headcanons)
She gets self-conscious because of her temper and wonders if her CG, big brother, and babysitters love her. She is reassured that she is loved no matter what every time ❤️

•Charlie might be a bit too small? she's cute nontheless. anyways, Charlie is probably just going to be a regular angel and not a seraphim. though, as interesting as it is, i just didnt think about that beforehand so she's probably just being regular. i could maybe work in the seraphim aspect in some way but im not sure rn
•Vaggie is an exorcist but is being forced into Charlie's bodyguard/assistant by Adam, though that's the only help he'll be giving Charlie and her project
•im thinking of making all of the exorcists 80s rock inspired harpies cuz it makes some sense i guess 🤷 just thought it would be cool honestly. hopefully Vaggie doesn't look too out of place?
•Angel is their first resident, purely on accident cuz he just planned on crashing there for maybe a night or so but somehow got dragged into actually participating; maybe he has a soft spot deep down or its his secret desire to redeem himself to see his twin sister? who really knows
•Alastor is only there to cause chaos really, in some way im not entirely sure of yet. but Charlie allows him to stay and "help" because she believes he actually has good inside him; spoiler alert: he does not!!
•back to Vaggie really quick, but im thinking about having her pull out her weapon from like her body or maybe her halo or maybe even her wings cuz that's so much cooler than her just carrying around the thing
•i didnt add Nifty or Husk mainly because i didnt know how to fit them in, Nifty could possibly work in the future if i thought about it more but idk. i dont care much for Husk personally so that's another reason
•the opposing forces against Charlie and her rag-tag group will be the three Vees. Vox and Al have their beef, Angel and Val also have issues with each other, and for Velette: im thinking she could butt heads with Charlie, and Vaggie by extension because she's Charlie's obligatory bodyguard, but mostly Charlie.
•Sir P might play a role in the future but that would be when we would know more about the main characters and the Vees. Cherri might too, but she'll stay just as Angel's friend for now who shows up every once and now to try to ruin his progress, not because she doesnt want him succeed but because drugs and alcohol are the only things she knows that makes him happy, and she usually takes him out after he vents to her about Val and work

Anyway. I guess I’ll take a bit more about this au. First of all we will talk about how Tony (Angel ) is in this au:
• Tong is more of a mental abuser than a physical one. Angel doesn’t like hitting people but he will yell at them hard core.
•When Tony is physically in punishment he lets someone else do it mostly in the form of drowning.
• Tony and Valentino fight a lot but Tony tries to restrain himself.
•Tony doesn’t do anything to do with SA personally at least but if he sees someone else do it to Valentino he will just turn and walk away not doing anything about it.
•Tony sometimes preforms as Angel Dust when he is bored
•Tony’s “Vox” is Husk and but the difference is that they are actually dating. (which I’m actually annoyed that Vox and Valentino aren’t technically dating in the show but.. it’s fine this is why we have fandom 🥲. At least there is still VoxVal content in the show though. )
Now for Valentino-
•Valentino goes by Valentine on stage. Angel thought it was uncreative but didn’t care enough to make him change it.
• Valentino lost his wings to Nifty when he messed up on of her outfits on accident. Angel did comfort him after but ultimately didn’t really care.
• Valentino’s love interest is Vox. ( because if we went by the actual way it was it would be Val x Mimzy which would be… uh… no. Also this does not mean I Ship Angel With Alastor in the original. I’m aroace myself and personally I don’t ship Alastor with anyone. Even though aroace Is a spectrum in my personal opinion it doesn’t seem like Alastor has any interest but that’s just my opinion . Either way I don’t mind people shipping anyone except when it’s a literally illegal ship or just plain wrong. )
•Also just a note in general I didn’t change anyone’s sexuality’s even though it’s a swap au. Because I feel like I’m swap au’s they should still have their own personalities in many ways. As well as important elements of who they are. )
•Valentino leans more into his fun and dumb side in this world but Valentino is still very much a narcissist and he will in every situation find a way to argue with Tony.
•Valentino gets angry a lot .

Most of the stories I write are inspired by two things: fairytales and horror. A majority of my WIPs are either directly inspired or loosely based on some fairytale, folklore, or myth, and most are part of some genre of horror, whether it be Gothic, psychological, folk, survival, or supernatural. Also a lot of my writing influence comes from authors like Angela Carter, Sarah Waters, Caitlin Starling, Shirley Jackson, and Robin McKinley.

Whitechapel, London 1894.  Sophie Wickes and her family struggle to survive, melancholy eats away at her father more and more with each passing day, and her passion for cultivating flowers procures no income. She must swallow her pride and set aside her hatred for England’s aristocracy when she’s offered a chance of employment by the reclusive Lord Edgar Cushing to tend the gardens of his Rosenthorne Hall. However, the estate, its gardens, and their master is nothing what Sophie expected. The house? Rotting, dilapidated, hideous. The gardens? The husk of something alive, whimsical, and beautiful. The master? Faceless, nothing more than a voice from the shadows. Despite her fear and anger, Sophie becomes enthralled by the garden’s potential for mystic, untainted beauty, and she develops a close friendship with Lord Cushing, even though he is nothing but a mere whisper of darkness that pleads for her to never seek him out. However, whatever enchantment the gardens and Lord Cushing’s voice bring her shatters as she begins to receive nightly visitations from a crooked-jawed phantom and butterflies who’s wings whisper of a bloody past and the truth behind the faceless lord's gentlemanly masquerade.

In a loose (and bloody) retelling of the King Lindworm folktale set against the backdrop of 1980s Milwaukee, two people try to navigate their unorthodox romance while an arcane, snake-like infection afflicts, and starts to change, one of them. Temperance Cavell, a six-foot tall woman living in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, lives a quiet, unexciting, and demure existence running a convenience store with her mother. But despite her mother's overbearing nature, the nonstop caring of her ailing grandmother, and her near-nonexistent social life, she cannot complain. This life is quiet, she’s (somewhat) in control, and nothing is unexpected… That is until Jack Turner, the motorcycle-riding kleptomaniac with a heart of gold, bursts into her store one Saturday afternoon, and between them a romance reluctantly blooms. But such love is swiftly threatened to shatter when Jack’s body begins to betray him, contorting him into something that is completely, and utterly, non-human.

November, 1899. While on holiday in Cambridge and attending museum lectures with her mother, Jane Sterling seeks to make this her chance to officially pursue her love of paleontology. While her family encourages the pursuit of passions and challenging rigid social norms, the institutes in place hinder her passion, making her resort to dressing brightly and speaking loudly for attention. Jane's chance comes to reveal itself in the form of the wealthy and reclusive Sir Terence Hayes, who’s come in search for her father, the esteemed paleobotonist Dr. Samson Sterling, to appraise fossils found in his garden. Her mother eagerly volunteers Jane to go in Dr. Sterling’s place as he remains ill in America, and Terence brings her to his isolated family's estate in the vast, deep, muddy marshes of Wolf’s Run. And the land is shrouded in urban legends. There are whispers of 'The Wolf's Run Beast,' the 'Monster of the Marshes,' that haunts the land under the cover of night, and as Terence leaves Jane to her work he is hell-bent that she's to return to Cambridge before nightfall. However, freak storms rage, causing the marshes' waters to rise and wash out the roads in flash floods before Jane has a chance to return, leaving her stranded at Wolf’s Run - and at the mercy of all that lurks there. As night looms, the staff hastily depart, an eerie silence falls, Terence forbids her from even coming near the cellar, and, most importantly, he warns her against leaving her room before dawn. All is merely a strange act to Jane, brushing it off as the eccentricities of an Englishman, until something comes scratching at her door, hungering for her blood. What started as a mere chance at becoming known swiftly becomes a tumultuous game of blood, teeth, survival, love, and salvation - and Jane must prepare to sharpen teeth of her own if she's to survive the horrors of the Wolf's Run marshes.

Selene Radcliffe is a young freshly-graduated detective, having spent long hours and many sleepless nights researching, studying, and looking through cold case files in an effort to prove herself as skilled of a private investigator as her late father, the renowned and well-respected Det. Arthur Radcliffe. However, she is a woman in a predominately male profession, a woman without a voice–literally and figuratively–and she wants to make a name for herself without relying on whatever legacy her father left behind. When the presence of a serial killer who the media has named “The Big Bad Wolf” on account of the strange, animalistic nature of his murders that occur on the nights of a full moon begin to plague the streets of Milwaukee, Selene sees this as her opportunity to prove herself and her skills to her peers, and she tasks herself and her partner Det. Apollo Esposito to hunt him down.  But it swiftly becomes apparent that the man they are hunting is no man, and may instead be a dreaded creature of folklore–one that is now keen on hunting them down in a blood-red game of cat and mouse…

The Faeries and the Lark || Novel || Dark/Gothic High Fantasy + Sapphic + Adventure + Fairytale/Folklore Retelling (East of the Sun, West of the Moon + Sleeping Beauty + Scandinavian Folklore) || Development + On-Hiatus
Loosely based on the fairytales Sleeping Beauty and East of the Sun, West of the Moon, as well as Scandinavian folklore, The Faeries and The Lark follows three faeries–spirits of nature–raising a human child they’ve named Lark, the princess of a sun-worshipping kingdom wiped out by a subterranean society of trolls. The faeries devote their lives to protecting Lark from the worlds of man by raising her to believe she’s one of the fae, and to keep her deep in the forest so that she can remain hidden from the trolls that restlessly hunt for the princess that escaped their massacre. But everything the three faeries worked hard for is put to the test when Lark encounters a human named Sigrid, the toughened, sword-wielding chancellor’s daughter from a neighboring moon-worshipping kingdom that’s threatened to be swallowed by the fairies’ forest, and every aspect of her life as she’d known them threaten to crumble around her.

For the WIP Folder Game. First of all, how do you expect me to choose one? After much deliberation, I narrowed it down to "Calluses" and "Dino Hunt" 😁
It is wild to me with what kind of precision all of you are picking these stories :D @jazzfic managed to zero in on the one Agnebal snippet, you picked the two fics that aren't even in the same list but are actually closely connected... I love it so much!
So, those two stories were originally inspired by @regionalpancake. I think I was feeling very bad at the time (a couple years back) and asked for prompts for holo-stories I could write. Pancakes came in with "Calluses", "no you stop it!" and "DINOSAURS!". And because the brain was in a bad place, I never ended up really doing much with it, but I do still have two bits of fic in my wip folder based on those prompts.
For the dino story, I only have one paragraph.
The insect looked similar to the stickflies that bred in the southern swamps on Vashti during the harvest months. They swarmed the fields once the drones and workers left, and feasted on the husks and straw left in the sandy earth. As a child, Elnor would sometimes ask Zani to let him walk down to the hill overlooking the monastery’s grain fields after dinner, so he could listen to their songs. Stickflies made the most tantilizing music by rubbing their five pairs of iridescent wings together. This specimen did not make music with its wings, maybe because it only had four, but it hummed a gently oscillating tone as it approached.
Well, one paragraph and one sentence. I think the idea was that there has been some holodeck malfunction and a bunch of terrifying prehistoric creatures have broken free and taken over La Sirena (given that she has holo-emitters throughout). And Elnor and the others are trying to round them up and herd them back into the holodeck before someone gets hurt. But alas, I don't have any additional notes here.
As for calluses, I have a few hundred words of dialogue between Ian and Soji. But I actually really like the notes I wrote underneath, so I'm gonna share those! (The square brackets are how I mark notes where a story isn't written out but I only have bits of summary)
[The holos, as many computers are want to do, build heuristics to do certain tasks more quickly. These connections get strengthened and over time, they form a map of sorts, that will show you what they do often, the same way calluses might for humans. Emmet likes to externalize many of his internal structures, similar to the way the captain likes to keep his scars. For the captain, it’s partially self-neglect, but it’s also a way to know where he’s been and keep a record of things that have happened and that were real. For Emmet, it’s absolutely the latter. [Soji has been thinking about externalizing some of her memories. Memories of Dahj, of childhood adventures. Dahj had a scar on her ankle that Soji remembers being from a kayaking trip they went on in the Pudget Sound. They rescued some wild animal — Dahj always loved animals! Soji knows the story is fake and the scar was fake and it’s all very frustrating, but she would like some kind of permanent reminder of the things she has accomplished and the past she has lived] [Ian suggests that Emil would probably be very pissed if Soji hurt herself to get some kind of cosmetic scar. But maybe she can talk to Emmet about getting a tattoo. As for calluses to show what she has accomplished: her brain is a map of all the things that have defined her. Dahj has left a mark there, and she can choose to express this in a myriad of small ways. And whichever one she chooses, Ian will help her get there.]
I feel like this is extremely on brand for me: thinking A Lot about how the holos function on a technological level and what that means for them as people. And also thinking and writing about Soji's relationship with Dahj and her manufactured past and memories. There's so much there there, and I really want to explore that more in the future!
(I cannot get over how you managed to pick these two, out of the dozen wip titles in that list 🤣 Absolutely brilliant! And thank you so much for the opportunity to dig through some old stories and reread my own writing. It's a real joy to do this kind of personal archaeology!)
Also: I had completely forgotten that there was a third prompt, too! I might have to create another WIP jut to make a note of that. Maybe it'll give me some inspiration 🤔

Violence as a Way of Unmaking Someone
(with props to the Wildsea RPG, which has some kinda similar mechanics for damaging gear, traits, and pets that inspired this)
Here's an idea for violence in tabletop rpgs.
Take what makes someone uniquely them. "My radiant smile." "The strength of my back." "My faith in my friends."
We'll call these anchors. Jot down a few for each character. Maybe one external, tangible thing, one internal, mental thing, and one that sums up what they are on a base physical, bodily level (warm mortal blood, grinding cogs and servos, slick and rubbery goblin-flesh, a husk of bramble and bone...).
These are assets that can help you on your journey. (Think of them like skills, if you like)
They are also things that can be targeted, and harmed, and shattered.
If one of your anchors is shattered, you have a choice - yield, surrender, pass out, whatever - or push on and burn through your remaining anchors as fuel. Lose all your anchors and you’re gone for good - dead, lost, or unrecognizable.
Afterwards, if one of your anchors has been shattered, you have another choice. You can go try to mend and reforge it, or you can let it go and find something new to take its place.
This goes for monsters too.
Consider the following:
You don’t kill a dragon just by hitting it. You’ve got to find a way to clip its wings, and douse its breath, and break its teeth and claws, and take its hoard, and shatter its pride
If a creature just happens to be hungry, you can solve that easily enough by finding something for it to eat other than you. If, however, one of its anchors is "a vicious, gnawing hunger," then that's something deeper and more fundamental about who or what it is. Something that needs to be either broken or - perhaps - changed through great and sustained effort.
Say armor serves to protect specific anchors. Armor for "my quick and clever hands" is simple enough - just get some sturdy gauntlets and you're set. But what does armor for "my boundless curiosity" or "my faith in my friends" look like? A cherished book? A memento of your time together?
Given your base physical being is something that can repeatedly shatter and be replaced a dozen times over your travels, I like to think this is a world full of old ghosts and revenants and faded gods and cybernetics and whatnot, with still-living flesh-and-blood mortals something of a cherished rarity. Killing anyone with these rules feels a bit like exorcising a ghost, and possibly everyone and everything is a bit ghostly.
Say you break down somewhere wild and haunted and deadly. You could hope you'll live long enough to make it out in a weakened state and find a way to heal properly. OR you could take something properly wretched and awful but quick and easy and make it an essential part of you, just to get up and running again.
Perhaps the same anchors you attack to unmake someone are also the traits you might connect with to form bonds and relationships with them, to really sell that "you could be doing something other than tearing one another apart, but here we are" energy.
