I would like to address the Ryan hate that I've been seeing, because it's really been rubbing me the wrong way.

When I first started playing The Quarry, Ryan gave me strong autistic vibes pretty much right away, and I immediately loved it. As someone who has been doing research on Autism lately because I think I might have it and I want to get officially diagnosed one day, Ryan exhibits a lot of symptoms. Difficulty with understanding sarcasm, a somewhat monotone pattern of speaking, being defensive over his interests (ie the podcast), a strict desire to follow instructions and not understanding why other people choose to break the rules, etc. And guess what? These are all things that I've seen him receive hate for. Every time I see someone hating on Ryan, it's for something that's very reflective of an autism-coded character. So to me, all of the Ryan hate feels very ableist, and I don't like it.

EDIT: Another thing I see Ryan receive hate for is saying that he's not really interested in Dylan OR Kaitlyn. To me, that line just made me think that maybe he just happens to be on the asexual and/or aromantic spectrums. But of course most other people don't stop to think about that because we live in a sex-normative and romance-normative world, so instead they just hate him for not being in love with either of them. Like y'all, just because he's not interested in either of them romantically doesn't mean he doesn't like them. He clearly likes them as friends, he's just not interested in dating either of them, and that's completely valid, because aroace people are valid.

I'm not saying he has to be your favorite, but maybe just think about how your negative opinions of him have possibly been shaped by subconscious ableism, aphobia, biphobia, or racism. Thank you❤

So, unpopular Quarry opinion.

I think Jacob is my second favorite of the boys after Dylan. Obviously Dylan being my favorite boy is a pretty popular opinion, but most other people’s second favorite is either Ryan or Max. And I love them too, but I honestly became really attached to Jacob in my playthrough and especially after a YouTube video I watched where he transformed into a werewolf (which he didn’t in my playthrough). And you know how Nick started being aggressive towards Abi when he was transforming? Jacob started being aggressive towards himself, calling himself stupid and saying that nobody loved him. And I started crying. I never thought I’d see myself in the jock straight white boy character, but here we are. Even in my playthrough where he didn’t transform, he started crying and showing remorse for breaking the car and wishing he could apologize to Emma, and I felt for him. And suddenly I felt so bad for originally comparing him to Mike from Until Dawn, because he’s nothing like Mike. And don't get me wrong, I loved Until Dawn and all of those characters, but I never really cried over any of them like this.

I just had to say this because I've seen some unwarranted hate thrown at Jacob and it kinda makes me sad. I truly never expected to connect with a character like Jacob, but I love the dorky little lovesick goofball❤️

You know what I recently realized that I think is really funny, but also really cool and interesting?

Max's infamous Cropped Hoodie look was in the same bag that Emma took her T-Shirt & Sweatpants look from in the tree house. That means that she had a choice between either the baggy shirt & baggy pants, or the tight pink cropped jacket and matching pink leggings. My girl Emma, fashion guru and social media influencer, chose the baggy, comfy clothes over the pink matching set and idk I just love that for her❤

Honestly, Dylan/Ryan is peak ADHD/Autism solidarity and I am so here for it❤❤

Back at it again with the unpopular Quarry opinions.

I love Emma & Jacob's relationship, and here's why.

It's not because they're good together, because we can see that they have friction. Rather, I love their relationship because of their problems and their flaws. I love it because it shows that relationships are anything but black-and-white. They're almost never as simple as "It's a toxic relationship because one of them is bad and one of them is good." Sometimes, yes, it's more evident that one partner is toxic & abusive to the other partner, but a lot of the time it's very grey. I keep seeing people in the fandom either side with Jacob or side with Emma and tbh both bother the heck out of me because neither one of them is simply "in the right" or "in the wrong." They both have valid thoughts and feelings, and they both have their issues and flaws. Let's talk about it.

We'll start with Jacob. At first, Jacob was just another guy who didn't wanna accept "No" as an answer from a woman. He continues calling her his girlfriend despite her protests and her wishes to just be friends going forward. He goes so far as to sabotage the car so they can't leave and thus forces them to spend another night together. This can be problematic because it appears that he is not listening to Emma and doesn't care about what she wants. But then, when we see him crying down by the lake after the kiss between Emma and Nick, it becomes apparent that he really loves her. To him, they weren't just fooling around. He started to really fall for her. That doesn't excuse him for not listening to Emma's wishes, but it still allows us to have sympathy for him. He loves this woman and perhaps he could even see a future with her, so it hurts when she says that she doesn't feel the same way anymore. He pretends like he's totally cool with it in front of the others to try and maintain his tough bravado, but inside he's devastated. And you know what I really love about Jacob? He doesn't hide the fact that's he's crying when Emma sits down next to him. He allows her to see him in a vulnerable state. And that shows true strength.

Okay, let's move on to Emma. On the surface, it doesn't appear that Emma is too serious about.. anything, really. She also doesn't seem to be very cognizant of Jacob's feelings, saying that he's a big boy and he'll get over it. Little does she know just how much he likes her. It's also clear that she thrives off of having an audience, and that she isn't afraid to make a scene in front of other people. This can be problematic because it appears that she is acting without regard to Jacob's feelings. But when we see her on her nighttime walk after being left at the island alone, we start to see her open up and become more vulnerable. It's almost like she can finally let the curtains come down and she can just be herself. And it becomes evident that what she needs in life is to discover herself, and that's sometimes hard to do when you're in a relationship. That's why she broke things off with Jacob; not because she doesn't like him, but because she just needs to figure out who she is and where she's headed in life. Later in the game, she tells Abi that she likes to act dumb because it makes people laugh. She's not actually dumb, but that's what she thinks other people expect from her, so that's how she acts when she vlogs. But maybe it's time for her to discover her true self and bring that to light instead.

As we can see, Jacob and Emma simply have opposing wants and needs. They both have their flaws and they both say or do things that hurt the other, but they also both have endearing qualities and sympathetic wishes. They're both in the wrong AND they're both in the right. They are two separate, interesting characters with their own depths and layers. Jacob isn't "a selfish dick without a braincell." He's a love-struck guy who's led by his heart. Emma isn't "an attention-seeking ditz who leads guys on." She's a vivacious girl who lives life to the fullest. I love and sympathize with both of them, and I love the representation of a relationship with so many layers of grey.

Headcanon time!

Ellie Williams has ADHD.

My proof? I have ADHD and I see a lot of myself in her, which is why I connect with her so much💕

But here are some specific things that I’ve noticed about her between the two games that inspired this headcanon:

Teaching herself to whistle simply because she had the sudden urge to do so. This could also be a way of verbally stimming to keep herself engaged whenever Joel was just running around looking for a damn rag lol

Similarly, I would always hear her humming to herself when not engaged in combat. This could be another verbal stim.

She would also frequently take her switchblade out and kind of play around with it, which could definitely be a way of stimming/fidgeting.

She seems to have a lack of impulse control. People with ADHD have a harder time controlling their impulses because we just wanna do ALL the things right away!! ..Even if it’s not exactly the best thing to do...

Her three main hyperfixations are drawing, outer space, and the Savage Starlight comics. ADHDers also tend to infodump about their hyperfixations, which is definitely something Ellie does. In the museum flashback, she infodumps about space to Joel by providing him with plenty of fun facts. It makes me so happy that Joel was actually interested in what she had to say, because a lot of ADHDers unfortunately don’t often get that same response from their family or friends. This is why we love and appreciate Joel Miller in this house💕

She has a tendency to stumble over her words a lot, especially whenever she gets flustered (trying to explain the kiss to Jesse, trying to explain her feelings for Dina to Joel, trying to process what to say after Dina reveals her pregnancy, etc). She probably has a hard time getting her thoughts straight because they’re always racing a mile a minute. Her brain is moving faster than her mouth is able to speak, which causes her to stutter.

It can also work the opposite way, though - sometimes she speaks before she thinks it through. For example: When she tells Dina that she’s a burden, we know that she doesn’t actually mean that, but she accidentally blurts it out before her brain has time to think of something better to say. Of course, Ellie feels really guilty about it the very next day because she has had more time to process the situation, so she goes to apologize to Dina for her outburst.

“You know what I love about you? How you let me finish my sentences.” Ellie doesn’t even realize she’s talking over Dina and interrupting her, which is something that most of us ADHDers struggle with! We promise, we don’t mean to interrupt or talk over you, we just don’t even realize that we’re doing it most of the time!😅
