Tom Hanniger x Reader - Prompt Response - "Sleep. I'll keep you safe."
Summary: Tom has taken you hostage. This is not the Tom you knew and fell in love with. Unable to escape, can you get him to trust you and maybe even reach him?
Pairing: Tom Hanniger x Female!Reader
A/N: Prompt from @thelonelyempath. So, just out of the gate, not gonna lie, this is one of the most fucked up things I've ever written and probably the darkest. Story wise I mean. There's something about Tom and that world from the movie that I love exploring. Before I knew it, this was nearing 18K and I was like "Crap, time to wrap this up!" I still enjoyed the exploration of Tom and the reader though in the dynamic they're in during this one.
I tried my best do my research and be respectful in regards to DID (Dissociative Identity Disorder) but also keep this a few years post-movie (2009) while also staying within the context the movie provided but also explore a bit, if that makes sense. Please note I do not work in the psychiatry, psychology, or medical fields. If I got anything appallingly incorrect about this disorder, its symptoms, its treaments, anything, please let me know. Also, I think it goes without saying (but I'll say it anyway), not every single person who has been diagnosed with DID is violent or a threat to others nor are their alters violent or a threat to others. Obviously, this is just a work of fanfiction based on a fictional story where the main character had an alter that was violent and a threat to everyone. No harm or disrespect is intended with this fanfiction at all.
Unbeta'd so all mistakes are mine.
Warnings: explicit violence; hostage situation; mentions of knives; dubcon; sex (smut-light); explicit descriptions of murder; mentions of burying a body; explicit threats of physical violence; explicit threat of sexual violence; explicit threat of neonaticide (I highly recommend looking this word up if you don't know what it means so you can decide if you still want to read from there; I didn't feel comfortable spelling it out here to be honest); physical threat of neonaticide; explicit threats of murder; mention of past sexual violence; mention of past sexual assault; implied past domestic abuse; misogynistic language; language

When you came to, you glanced around the cabin you were currently tied up in. Tears blurred your vision, strands of your hair matted to your face, and you could feel the gag cutting tightly into the sides of your mouth. You didnât bother trying to yell or make noise. You knew the cabin you were in since Tom had brought you here once to see it; there was no one and nothing around for miles. The next town over where Tom could get supplies was the closest thing and that was about an hourâs drive.Â
How had things gone so wrong? You tried to be a good person, you always tried to do the right thingâŠso how did you end up here?
You already knew the answer to that, though. Because you let him in. Literally, right through your front door.
As if your thoughts summoned him, Tom appeared from the kitchen with two plates in hand and a huge grin, despite a black eye and cut lip he was sporting. He laid yours down in front of you and you could see chicken parmesan, your favorite, surrounded by linguini and green beans. He then placed down his own plate in front of his empty chair before turning back to you with a look of determination. âAlright. Letâs get this off you. No screaming, okay?â He asked, using a softer tone than youâd heard from him all day. âNo struggling. And no running.â As if there was any point in screaming or running; no one would hear you and heâd catch you before you made it ten feet. He loosened your gag and pushed it down past your chin to hang around your neck. When you didnât scream, he graced you with a warm smile. âGood girl,â he murmured as he began working on the ropes tying your hands to the chair. When he moved down to the ones on your legs, you rubbed at your sore wrists, noting a few surface cuts around your arms. He noticed and a frown formed on his face. âSorry, I wonât tie them as tightly next time,â he promised. You didnât know what else to do but nod.
When he was finished, he sat up and his fingers gently gripped your chin, forcing your eyes to meet his. His green gaze bore into yours and he tenderly trailed the backs of his fingers against your cheek, almost watching you in some sort of odd reverence that you had no idea existed until the last couple of months. He began to lean in, presumably to try and kiss you like he had earlier, but he must have thought better of it and stopped, digging his teeth into his bottom lip as he got to his feet. While you were grateful he hadnât connected his lips to yours, you had to wonder what deterred him and that made you worry. He studied you for a moment and, just as you feared, he then made his way over to the other chair being used, his soft expression immediately hardening and his warm eyes icing over as they settled on your estranged husband.
He grabbed the back of the chair and dragged him away from the table, choosing to dump him in a corner on his side, making Miles groan in pain. Tom kicked him for good measure and you heard Miles yell out against the gag in his mouth.Â
âPlease,â burst out of you. âPlease, Tom, donât!â
Tomâs glare snapped up towards you. âAfter everything heâs done to you, donât tell me youâre still protecting him.â
You knew you had to act quickly, to cajole Tom so you could draw his focus away from Miles. You were the only reason Miles wasnât dead yet, you knew that without a doubt. âIâm not,â you soothed. âI just want to eat the dinner you went to the trouble of making for me. Itâs been hours since I last ate and I really need to eat. Iâm sure youâre hungry, too. Please, just come and sit down.â
Thankfully, Tomâs eyes softened a little at your pleading but he still gave Miles one more good kick that made you flinch before he came over to join you. He pulled a knife out of his jacket which made your heart start to pound a little faster but he simply smiled as he also produced a plastic fork. He leaned down and began to cut your chicken into bite size pieces for you. âI, uh, Iâve never made chicken parmesan before so I hope itâs alright,â he told you, a shy smile on his face. You marveled at how he could go from being the scariest thing youâd seen in your life one minute to being the sweetest and most humble guy youâd ever met in the next. âAnd I know green beans arenât what would usually go with this dish but I didnât really have anything else.â He rubbed at the back of his neck, chuckling nervously.
âIâm okay with green beans,â you quietly assured him.
He dropped his hand and smiled, looking relieved and leaning in to tenderly kiss you. You tried your best not to tense up as he did. Tom then made his way over to his seat, leaving you the fork but not the knife. Not only did he not want to chance you using it on him but he most likely didnât want you using it on yourself either. You never would but he obviously wasnât too sure about that. You watched as he poured both of you a glass of sparkling cider and sat down a few battery-operated candles between you.
When he handed you your glass, you were disappointed to find it was plastic. He really had thought of everything. He misread your expression and assured you, âI know itâs not the best but I wanted something nice for you for dinner. Iâll get something better though, next time Iâm in town. I promise.â You offered up a thin-lipped smile and a nod which seemed to placate him for the time being. So he planned to keep you for a while then. You only hoped Miles would keep his mouth shut and that you could get Tom to start trusting you as you waited for an opportunity that might come your way with the aforementioned trip to town.
Tom took the seat across from you, smiling, and reached over to touch his glass to yours. You watched as he took a sip and after a moment, you joined him, making him grin happily.
As hungry as you were, you werenât in a rush to eat anything that he had prepared for you out of sight. What if he was intent on drugging you? You werenât even sure if he hadnât before. You barely remembered how you got here. All you knew was Miles showed up, having found you, and Tom reacted, then nothing until you woke up here. The only other thing you remembered was blonde hair and so much bloodâ You tried to shut that thought out. Thinking about Tom again, If he planned to keep you here for a while, heâd have to sleep at some point and he could be planning to drug you then, like right now. And God only knew what he planned to do with Miles; you prayed you could somehow convince him to let the man go while you stayed behind (even though that would be just as dangerous for you). Though Tom hadnât been wrong; Miles didnât deserve your compassion. But that didnât mean you wanted to watch the man youâd once shared a life with die brutally either. If Tomâs distaste for your husband was anything to go by, if he decided to end Miles, it would indeed be brutal.  Â
âSomething wrong?âÂ
The question snapped you out of your reverie. You glanced up to find Tom watching you worriedly. You forced a reassuring smile onto your face. âNo. Of course not.â
âI thought you needed to eat.â His eyes bored into you, flicking back and forth from the plate to you.
âI will. Iâm justâŠtaking it slow.â
He frowned at your food. âItâs not that good, is it?â
âWhat? No. No,â you worked to reassure him. âItâs just thatâŠâ You didnât want to voice the words and chance angering him.
âJust what?â When you couldnât think of a way to phrase it and kept quiet instead, he urged you in a softer tone, âEat, sweetheart.â
You realized then that you had no choice but to take a few bites if you didnât want to do anything to anger or upset him. You hoped to God that there was nothing in it.
Almost as if he read your mind, his jaw tightened as he went to spear more chicken with his fork on his plate. âThereâs nothing in it if thatâs what youâre worried about. I wouldnât do that to you.â His eyes lifted to yours, that soft reverence back in them. âTo either of you.â He flicked them to your round stomach in meaning and then back to you again.
You wanted to believe him, especially when he looked at you like that, but wouldnât it be easier for him to be rid of the child that wasnât his? Then again, he hadnât killed Miles yet and he fancied himself in love with you, and you were currently housing said child⊠Perhaps he truly didnât mean your baby harm, while it was in utero at least.
Tom let out a heavy sigh and dropped the fork, making it clatter against his plate. He was now scowling over at you, clearly displeased at your show of distrust in him. Uh oh.
Now definitely without a choice, you took a forkful of chicken and slowly bit into it. He seemed pleased with the action and after a moment, continued to eat himself. As you quietly chewed, you realized that it wasnât half bad, and you were starving. As scared as you were, you knew you would need to keep up your energy for any opportunity to escape, to get you and your baby to safety, and truthfully, you needed to take any chance at a meal that you could. Tom smiled to himself as you really dug in.Â
You had halfway cleaned your plate when you heard âSo itâs okay?â
You stopped to see Tom sitting there, leaning forward and watching your every movement, the biggest grin on his face. You swallowed down the chicken you had just stuffed into your mouth and held a hand over your lips self-consciously. âGood,â you admitted quietly. âVeryâŠgood.â
Satisfied with that answer and himself, he sat back in his chair and continued to smile over at you. Though it was unnerving, you continued to finish your meal, your goal being to keep your strength up for your baby. When you were done, he got to his feet and grabbed his plate, slowly making his way over to you. Your heart pounded with each heavy footstep and it nearly stopped when he reached you.Â
Tom grabbed your empty plate and slid his still half-full one in front of you, placing your fork onto it. When you turned a puzzled expression up towards him, he leaned down and pecked your lips, murmuring to you, âYou two need it more than I do.â He kissed you one more time before he walked away, heading into the kitchen. You watched him go in shock, thoughts racing in your mind. Knowing he had eaten some of the food and remembering his promise, after mulling it over for a minute or two, you then dug in, your focus on the chicken and green beans. You needed as much energy as you could get.
<-->
He spooned you that night after insisting you take the only bed in the place â his bed. You felt him press a tender kiss to the back of your neck every few minutes and while that made you uncomfortable, his hands gently rubbing your belly had you absolutely terrified. You imagined all sorts of horrible things as you laid there in the dark, with only a shaft of moonlight sneaking into the room through an opening in the curtains. You kept expecting a knife to be pulled, a fist to collide with your bump, to feel the stab of a hypodermic needle â something. It got so bad that you started to shake and Tom, thinking you were cold, moved the blanket over you both a little higher before resuming his ministrations. You wanted nothing more than to throw his hands off of you and get out of the bed, moving away from him. It was one thing for him to have his hands on you, though now it made your skin crawl in the worst way, but your babyâŠyou would give anything to keep him away from the one person youâd do anything to protect.
You were frozen in fear despite the tremors of your body. You felt the baby move and while that should have overjoyed you like it usually did, it caused tears to start rolling down your cheeks, soaking the pillow beneath you. How much longer would you get to feel that? How much longer would Tom allow you to keep your baby?
âOh,â he exhaled against your neck. âSheâs kicking.â
You closed your eyes, forcing more tears to fall, as your lips trembled. You thought back to the first time heâd come into contact with your baby this way. You had been such a fool â such a blind, trusting, naive fool.Â
You were cleaning a wooden frame of a painting with a rag when you felt the familiar movement within your tummy. âOh,â you chuckled, holding a hand to the side of your stomach.Â
âAre you okay?âÂ
You glanced up to find Tom up on a ladder, watching you with furrowed brows. You gave him a bright smile. âYeah, of course. The babyâs kicking. Come down here, quick.â
Still looking worried, Tom hurried down the ladder and approached you.Â
âGive me your hand.â You grabbed the hand he offered up and placed it right where you had just felt movement. Tom glanced back and forth between you and your stomach, looking unsure for what he should be feeling.
A moment later, the baby kicked again. âThere! You feel it?â
You knew he must have because an expression of surprise and awe came over his handsome face as he stared down where you held his hand.Â
Another kick happened and it made you laugh. âOh, sheâs very active today.â
Tom smiled over at you. âYouâre having a girl?â
âWell, I donât really know what Iâm having yet but,â You grinned, feeling yet another kick. âI hope it is.â
âThen I hope it is, too.â You glanced up to find him watching you with that soft look youâd seen before. You gently squeezed his hand in thanks and then focused again on your bump.Â
Tom had been helping you restore the old house youâd moved into. You felt comfortable around Tom, he put you immediately at ease when you met. Heâd been a huge help to you and when you had moments like that, you just chalked it up to him maybe having a little crush on you. At least thatâs what Cindy, a new friend of yours (and the realtor whoâd helped you find the place), said the first time sheâd seen you two together when she stopped by to see how you were doing and how the house was coming along. But you never thought anything more of it. Tom never made a move or asked you out. He also never encroached on your personal space without invitation or pushed past your boundaries. He never did anything to make you uncomfortable. As you got to know him, you began to trust him.
But now, you wondered how you could have ever been so stupid. Â
âYou feel that, Y/N?â He breathed, grabbing your hand and holding it to your stomach. âShe kicked again.â His tone was so full of wonder and happy surprise that you immediately started to cry. His hand traveled from your stomach up to your hair, smoothing it away from your face. âWhatâs wrong? Are you in pain?â You could hear the sudden concern.Â
âAre you going to kill my baby?â You choked out on a sob.
You felt him turn you onto your back so he could look down at you. He looked less than pleased but he murmured, âNo. I told you, I would never hurt either of you. I love you.â He inclined his head towards your stomach. âAnd her. Everything Iâm doing is for you both. I wish you would believe me, Y/N.â
âI really want to,â you cried.
He wiped at your tears and stroked your cheek, before leaning down to kiss you. This time, you opened up for him when he sought entrance beyond your lips and you knew he was pleased by the little groan he let escape into your mouth. You didnât protest when his hands roamed all over your body, thankfully steering clear of your stomach. You didnât say a word when he stripped you of your clothes, whispering âBeautifulâ as he uncovered every inch of your skin. You didnât fight when he urged you to open up for him and his tender touch brought you to heights you had never reached before with a partner other than him that left you gasping for air. As you shivered and shook, unable to keep from crying out, and dug your fingernails into his arm, he smiled lovingly down at you. While you came back down, he pressed kisses to your hair, face, and lips. He watched you, almost if he was waiting for something, so you hesitantly reached out for the button on his jeans, thinking you now needed to return the favor, when he stopped you.
âThis was about you,â he murmured before kissing you. âItâs been a long day. You should get some rest.â
You nodded, not wanting to disagree in the slightest. He pulled the blankets up over your naked form and urged you onto your side again, away from him. He spooned you once more and placed a kiss to the back of your neck. âSleep, sweetheart,â he murmured. âIâll keep you safe.â His hand then cupped over your belly protectively. âBoth of you.â Â
You bit your lip to keep the tears from starting up again. God, you hoped that was true.
<-->
The next morning, you woke up alone, feeling groggier than usual. You panicked for a moment, thinking Tom may have drugged you after all, but you remembered you hadnât eaten or drunk anything before you went to sleep. You also didnât find any obvious injection sites when you searched your body in the bathroom, using both mirrors to your advantage. You chalked it up to everything that happened yesterday. It had been taxing on you, mentally and physically. You were just exhausted and needed more sleep. You might even need a nap today, if only you could relax enough to take one. Though you didnât see that happening anytime soon. You dressed and made your way out to the main room, worried about where Tom was, though you felt a little relief seeing Miles in the room, still breathing.Â
You found Tom in the kitchen, making you breakfast, and he gave you a big smile when he saw you. âMorning, Beautiful.â He leaned down and pecked your lips, giving a gentle stroke to your belly with his free hand. âMy two beautiful girls.â You forced a smile and hugged him from behind, laying your head against his back, just like you used to do. You hoped that the gesture of affection would keep him just like this, a semblance of the Tom youâd known before Miles ever showed up. It mustâve worked because he squeezed your arms with his free hand and continued cooking.
Thankfully, this time when you sat down at the table, he didnât tie you to the chair. Instead, he smiled at you as he placed the plate of eggs in front of you and pressed a kiss to the side of your head. âEat, sweetheart,â he urged. âAnd then I want to show you something.â
You nodded, immediately digging in and not wanting to displease him.Â
His smile grew as he watched you and he leaned down once more to kiss your temple. âThatâs my girl,â he murmured. His hand slipped down to your belly and gave it a rub. âMy girls,â he corrected, before walking back into the kitchen.Â
Miles, who was still gagged and tied to his chair, glared over at you from the corner of the room. At some point before you came out of the bedroom earlier, Tom had righted his chair so now he could watch every single thing you and Tom did. You werenât exactly sure what Tom was planning but you didnât like it. You especially didnât like that the man who had terrorized you for years was currently staring at you with pure hatred, as if heâd like to kill you, as if all of this was somehow your fault. In a way, you supposed it was because had you not let Tom into your life in the first place, this wouldnât be happening. But then again, had Miles left you alone and not coming looking for you, Tom wouldnât have snapped. At least, you donât think he would have. And Cindy would still be alive.
âFucking crazy bitch.â Your eyes snapped to Miles who was still scowling at you. Whatever he said was usually muffled by his gag but you could hear it clear as day. You frowned and went back to your food.Â
Tom reappeared just then and placed a bowl of cut up fruit in front of you.Â
âThank you,â you whispered.Â
He gave you a nod, seeming pleased, until he noticed Miles glaring over at you. You watched the change happen within his expression and suddenly you knew you needed to intervene and quickly. Before he could move, you reached out and grabbed his hand, prompting him to look down at you.Â
âI need to get exercise. For the baby. Will you take me for a walk after Iâm done?â
His eyes briefly softened while the rest of him did not. âOf course.â He dropped your hand and moved around the table, coming to a stop in front of Miles. âYou keep looking at her like that and Iâll cut your eyes out and feed them to you,â he threatened with a menacing edge to his tone. âDonât forget, the only reason youâre even still breathing is because of her.â Tom straightened up, a terrifying smirk on his face, before he punched MIles. You winced, dropping your fork to your plate.
Miles turned back to glare up at Tom, more blood seeping into his gag. âFuck you, you piece of shit! Fuck you and that fucking crazy whore!â He yelled against the gag. Tom gave him one more punch for good measure, causing Miles to yell out in pain, before he walked away, that smirk still on his face. You watched as Tom sat down across from you and tucked into his own breakfast, seemingly unbothered by what just occurred. You quickly glanced over at Miles, seeing him still glaring but blood coming out of his broken nose. Â
âHe doesnât deserve your sympathy.â
You quickly looked back at Tom to find him watching you, not glaring so much but also not seeming pleased.
You gripped your fork tightly but forced yourself to keep a smooth expression. âItâs not sympathy, but pity. Pity that he doesnât know when to shut his mouth.â You turned a glare over on your husband who more than gladly returned it.
When you turned back to Tom, he was studying you, smirking. âFinish your breakfast, sweetheart, so I can show you my surprise and then we can go for that walk.â
You did as he instructed, digging into the fruit, not wanting to displease him any further. Thankfully, though, he seemed to be mollified, for now.
<-->
You stared around you in horror, your knees feeling weak. You held onto the wall for support.
Tom had taken your hand and led you to a small room in the back of the cabin that you had no idea existed, near the bedroom you had spent the night in. He smiled at you and told you to shut your eyes when you arrived at the closed door. You did as he instructed, not wanting to make him angry. He opened the door, led you into the room with his hands over your eyes, and then asked if you were ready. You nodded and he dropped his hands as you opened your eyes and looked around you, your jaw dropping.Â
âSurprise,â he crowed. âWhat do you think?â
You were thinking you were going to be sick. You were staring at an exact replica of the nursery you and Tom had put together back in your house, right down to the crib sheet, mobile, paint colors, and night light. Everything you had purchased for your nursery, he had obviously gone and bought a double of to place here. You even spotted the same rocking chair in the corner, the same changing table, and the same toys and books youâd decorated the room with. The same stuffed animals sat in the crib. Even a double of the breast pump machine youâd bought was sitting on the changing table.Â
âWhat do you think?â Tom asked happily as he glanced around. âIs it just like the one we put together back at your place?â
You robotically walked to the changing table, opening the cabinets underneath, and you saw the same outfits youâd bought, folded and arranged in the exact same way. You held a hand to your mouth; you felt the urge to scream but you couldnât let it out. You started to shake. How long had he been planning this? To kidnap you and your baby and bring you both here?
âI know what youâre thinking,â he said from behind you, forcing you to tense up and drop your hand, schooling your features before you turned to look up at him. He was watching you worriedly. âI only did this as a back-up. In case we ever had to come out here. If that bastard out there ever tracked you down and we had to leave quickly, I wanted to make sure you and our daughter had everything you needed.â
Our daughter. It felt like you were falling into an endless void and you would never wake up from this nightmare. âWhy didnât you tell me?â You managed to ask.
He framed your face with his hands. âI didnât want to worry you. And I figured it would be a nice surprise if we ever did have to come here. A little piece of home.â He gave you a soft smile. âDo you like it?â
You nodded, not sure what else to do, not able to say anything right then. He grinned and kissed you, happy that you liked the surprise. You thought youâd been in trouble before when he tied you up and brought you out here where no one could hear you scream. Now, you realized, you were in so much more trouble than youâd even imagined.
<-->
Tom held your hand as you both walked the property. Thoughts were racing through your mind but you did your best to pay attention to every inch of the land that he took you to.Â
âYouâve been quiet.â If you closed your eyes, you could swear you could hear the Tom that had become your friend and confidante over the months youâd worked on your house together.Â
âJustâŠoverwhelmed. And tired.â
Tom stopped in his tracks and your heart rate picked up, worried you had somehow said something wrong.
He turned to you, staring into your eyes, a layer of concern shadowing his expression. âI know this has been a lot and itâs an adjustment. But I promise you, Y/N, all I want is for our family to be together. Without having to worry about sick fucks like the one in there,â He inclined his head back towards the cabin. âWho want to threaten that, who want to hurt you.â
Tears began to well up in your eyes. âAnd Cindy?â
His jaw tightened and he looked away. âShe wasnât your friend.â
âShe was,â you choked out. âAnd she was a good one.â
His gaze snapped back to yours and he lifted his free hand to your cheek, stroking it with his thumb. âNo, she wasnât, sweetheart. How do you think he found you?â
You shook your head, shaking a few tears loose. No, you refused to believe it. He was just trying to trick you into believing it so you would see things his way. âNo. She wouldnât do that. No.âÂ
Tom wiped your tears away and you could see pity staring back at you. For a cold-blooded killer, it threw you for a loop that he could feel anything like pity or worry for you or concern for the baby or any other emotion besides anger, jealousy, and hatred. âWhen he showed up in her office, he asked where you were and she told him, point blank. No hesitation, just âhereâs the addressâ. He even admitted it.â
âNo, he lies. He probably showed up in uniform and thatâs why sheâïżœïżœïżœ
âShe knew better. You told her that was a possibility, you told her his name so she could be on the lookout. And still, she didnât think twice about it and sent him over to find you.â
âNo, she wouldâve called me to warn me if that happened, if she had no choice. Maybe thatâs why she was thereâŠto warn me.â
He gave you a look. âShe wasnât your friend, Y/N. She gossiped about you behind your back. She came onto me at the Christmas party, though I had gone there with you.â
That revelation surprised you but honestly, you didnât know what was up or down anymore, never mind the truth. âWe went as friends. We werenât together then.â
âShe knew I liked you, that I wanted to be with you.â He leaned in and brushed his lips against the corner of your mouth.
You waited until he straightened back up. âThatâs still no reason to kill her,â you gritted out, a tear rolling down your cheek.Â
He looked at you sadly, wiping the tear away. âI know.â
Your brows drew together in confusion. You hadnât expected that response.Â
Tom pressed a kiss to your forehead and tightened his grip on your hand. âItâs pretty cold out. Letâs get you back inside where you can get warm.â
You let him lead you back to the cabin, turning that last part of the conversation over and over in your mind. From the sound of it, he knew his killing of Cindy had been wrong. A spark of hope started up in your chest though you were afraid to trust it. He still had you and Miles captive here, after all.
<-->
That night, as he spooned you from behind in his bed, he was kissing your neck, his hands moving all over your body. You could feel his erection digging into your back. âI love you so much,â he murmured to your skin. âItâs just you and me, sweetheart. You and me. And our little girl.â He placed his hand on your belly, trailing his lips up to your jaw. You closed your eyes, tears rolling down your cheeks, and you tried to imagine the Tom who had first made love to you nearly a month ago, who had sweetly kissed your baby bump every time he left the house and every time he came home. You held onto that Tom in your mind as he undressed you, then himself, probed you to make sure you were ready, and slid into you from behind, sighing happily into your neck as he did. He gently pumped his hips into yours and you could feel his hand making its way down between your legs, touching you in a similar way to how he had touched you last night, with complete tenderness. âWe were meant to find each other,â he grunted into your ear as you arched your back and laid your head against his shoulder, reacting to his touch. âBe a family.â You tried to ignore his words and only focus on the pleasure coursing through you. Heâd said these things to you before, back when he was your Tom, and youâd believed him.Â
You could hear the old bed creaking beneath you and you could feel his rhythm increasing, the moans and sweet whispers in your ear picking up in frequency. You knew he was close and you squeezed your eyes shut harder, trying to imagine you and him back in your bed at your house, as if nothing had changed between you. That image helped bring you closer to the edge and you reached an arm back, gripping his hair, crying out as you got even closer and closer. His pace increased and the headboard was knocking against the wall now, his groans sounding out in rapid succession, almost tangling with your cries in midair, joining together in an almost impassioned chorus. Lost in your fantasy and the sensations you were feeling, you moaned out, âKiss me.â Tomâs mouth was on yours, his tongue sweeping against your own, and that pushed you over the edge. You stiffened and he swallowed your cries, grunting loudly himself and intertwining his fingers with yours, squeezing as he fell over his own edge. You were still shaking a couple of minutes later when he slipped out of you and gently rolled you onto your back as you caught your breath.Â
You could see him beaming down at you, still panting himself, his hair messy from your fingers, eyes bright and full of adoration for you. The same way heâd looked the other times youâd had sex in the past. It made your heart soar but also break mid-flight. âI love you.â You saw how much he meant it and your heart completely shattered.
Your eyes filled with tears as you reached a hand up to stroke his cheek. âI love you, too,â you whispered. And you did, this version of Tom, anyway. His smile grew and he laid his head down on your chest, sighing in contentment as you ran your fingers soothingly through his hair. Tears dripped down your cheeks as you held him, wondering how the universe could be so cruel as to send someone to you that loved you and your baby so much only to have him turn out to be a cold-blooded killer.Â
<-->
You woke up alone again, even groggier than the day before. At this point, you wouldnât be surprised if Tom was actually drugging you in some way once you fell asleep. You had held him until he fell asleep himself last night but obviously, at some point, he must have woken up after you passed out.
You felt irritable, which was most likely a side effect of the grogginess you felt and possibly whatever Tom was drugging you with, as well as typical pregnancy hormones. It was so bad that you couldnât even be bothered to drum up a smile for Tom who was looking at you like you were the best thing that existed on the planet. You took the food he gave you and dug in, not even thanking him like you usually made sure to do.
You felt off and when he spoke softly to you, âEat, sweetheart, and then weâll go for another walkâ, you nearly snapped at him, demanding to know what heâd been drugging you with and why. Youâd only just held yourself back, reminding yourself you werenât supposed to say or do anything that would anger him.
Miles, though, was fair game.Â
He had called you names, though muffled by the gag, the minute Tom stepped out of the room. You ignored him as best you could, though it still got under your skin. Who the hell was he to sit there and call you things like âwhoreâ and âslutâ? Even if he had heard you and Tom together last night? Was he so stupid that he didnât realize the predicament he was in, that you all were in? Had Tomâs threats and beatings not made it clear enough? When Tom got up to get you more decaffeinated tea, Miles threw more insults your way and you decided, yes, he really was that stupid. Nothing you hadnât already known, you supposed.
Tom placed the tea in front of you and you gave him a nod. His brows drew together for a moment before he smoothed them out, taking his seat once more. He glanced between you and Miles. âEverything okay?â
âTerrific,â you snapped. It didnât hit you until you said it what you had done. You quickly glanced up at Tom who didnât look displeased at your attitude (thankfully) but was studying you intently. âSorry,â you offered more gently. âIâm not having a good morning.â
He nodded, his brows still drawn together. âWell, finish up and weâll get out of here for a while, stretch our legs, and get some fresh air.â He gave you a patient and understanding smile.
You gave him a wan smile in return, realizing how lucky you were that he was being so understanding and hadnât gotten angry with you. You were picking up the plastic butter knife to spread jam on your toast when Miles said something nasty to you both, once again muffled by his gag.Â
At that point, youâd had enough. You dropped the knife and pounded the table with your fist, making the plates shake. âShut. Up!â You yelled over at him. He scowled at you but did indeed shut up. You realized what youâd done and you worriedly glanced back at Tom. His eyes were flicking back and forth between you and Miles before getting to his feet. Your heart leapt into your throat. Oh no. Now youâd done it.
He made his way over to you, glaring at Miles as he did. When he stopped in front of you, he held out his hand which you warily took. He pulled you to your feet and gripped your chin between his fingers. âI think we should go for that walk now. Okay?â You nodded, not exactly sure what was going to happen but you noticed him shooting a terrifying glare in Milesâ direction. You remembered you needed to keep your strength up so you picked up the piece of toast you had been intent on eating and took it with you as he led you to the door. He saw and chuckled, squeezing your hand, as he opened the screen door for you both to walk through.    Â
<-->
âYou feeling a little better?â
You turned to look at him, wondering how to answer that. Yes, you werenât as edgy, but no, you didnât exactly feel better. You finally settled on âA little.â
He gave you a hint of a smile and nodded, averting his gaze to the path in front of you.Â
After a minute, he spoke. âYou know, if heâs becoming a problem, I can take care of it.â
You froze, stopping in your tracks, your eyes wide. This was exactly what you didnât want.
He noticed you had stopped and glanced back at you over his shoulder with furrowed brows.Â
You didnât want to anger him but maybe you were too tired, too scared, or too irritated â you couldnât help but finally speak your mind. âI donât want you to kill him.â
Instead of angry, he appeared confused as he spun around to fully face you. âWhy? Heâs obviously upsetting you, which isnât good for the baby or you, heâs stinking up the place, he refuses to eat anything. Hell, he doesnât even deserve to live after what heâs done to you. No oneâs even going to miss the guy. Not to mention, it would keep you and our daughter safe... Whatâs the point of keeping him around?â
Tears started to blur your vision as you finally admitted the truth. âI canât⊠I canât kill someone, even him.â
Tom stared into your eyes before licking his lips and looking away. âThatâs why Iâm offering to do it.â
It terrified you to say this next part but you had to say it. âIf this is going to work with us, as a familyâŠyou canât kill anymore people, Tom.â His eyes snapped to yours and your heart began to pound harder in fear. âYou canât kill and I canât order someoneâs death. Even his.â Tears made their way down your face and his gaze softened a little, seeing them.Â
He reached up and wiped them away with his thumbs before pulling you into him, pressing a lingering kiss to the top of your head. âOkay,â he murmured to you. âOkay. Weâll figure something else out for him.â He embraced you tightly and you closed your eyes, relieved. âAnd then itâll just be us, the three of us, our family.â
You nodded against him, though you secretly knew you still had to figure out a way to escape. Perhaps once you were able to figure out what to do with Miles, then that would leave just the two of you. And then either Tom would be forced to take you into town for supplies which gave you more of an opportunity to escape or get help, or heâd be forced to leave you here. Based on the two walks you had so far, you were starting to get to know the property. Even though there was nothing but woods surrounding you, perhaps you could make your way at least to the property line. From there, you could figure out your next move.
He released you, kissed you, and took your hand again to start heading back.Â
âAnd Tom?âÂ
He glanced over at you.Â
You didnât want to push your luck but since you had already spoken up about Miles and the killing, you were going to speak up about this, too. Especially since your child was at stake. âWhatever youâre drugging me with at night, you have to stop. It could be hurting the baby.â
He furrowed his brows again. âSweetheart, Iâm not drugging you. I told you, I would never do anything to hurt her. Or you. I would never put either of you at risk like that.â
You wanted to believe him but you also knew what you felt. âThen why do I feel so groggy when I wake up in the morning? And itâs gotten worse each time?â
He studied you, looking as if he wanted to say something, when a sudden realization dawned on his face. A smile crept along his face. âYouâre probably tired because Iâve been keeping you up at night. You probably just need a good nightâs rest, thatâs all. Iâll tell you what, tonight you take a nice, hot shower, weâll go to bed a little earlier, and weâll just sleep. How does that sound?â
You didnât want to appear too eager for him not to engage in any sexual activities with you so you just nodded and hugged his arm, whispering, âThat sounds good, thank you.â
He wrapped his arm around you and pulled you into him, leading you both back to the cabin. His smile turned sheepish. âSorry, sweetheart. I just couldnât resist you, but donât worry, I promise to keep my hands to myself. Your rest is more important, especially for her.â He laid a hand over your bump, patting it gently, and you tried not to cringe under his arm.
<-->
Two weeks had passed and truth be told, you were surprised no one had come looking for you yet, considering you, Tom, and Miles were missing, you were pregnant, and Cindyâs dead body had been left in your house. Your due date was little more than a month away, and you were starting to worry you might have to deliver at the cabin if you werenât found soon.Â
Miles was still with you both, alive, as cantankerous as ever. He eventually started to eat the small amounts of food Tom let him have when he realized Tom wasnât going to kill him and he obviously wasnât going anywhere anytime soon. He still threw insults at you every chance he got but for the most part, you ignored him to the best of your ability. If Tom overheard, which was rare, he beat the crap out of Miles until either you begged him to stop or Miles lost consciousness. You and Tom were still trying to figure out what to do with him, but short of taking him somewhere deep in the woods and dropping him off there with the hopes that a bear might get him, you didnât really have any options. And since you asked Tom not to kill him, a hostage Miles remained.
Tom had kept his word and kept his hands to himself at night. He still spooned you, still kissed you and caressed your bump, but he let you sleep. You still woke up groggy sometimes, as if you hadnât slept a wink, but it had gotten a little better. Tom blamed those mornings on the old mattress. He swore heâd buy a new one the next time he was in town (which thankfully was coming up soon). You had taken to showering before bed every night, hoping the hot water would relax your body enough that you would drift off into a deep, restful sleep. You had actually gotten used to Tom cuddling you and you no longer feared for your childâs life when he touched your belly. He talked to the baby sometimes, something you heard while you were falling asleep, and his tone was so gentle and loving and reverent, that you couldnât help but think he really meant it when he said he wanted all of you to be a family. He had even taken to kissing the bump again throughout different parts of the day or if he had to go outside to chop wood. He cooked for you every day without complaint, though youâd offered to pitch in to help (hoping he would trust you completely and you could get access to knives and other cooking tools that could be weaponized at some point if needed). Heâd given you a knowing smile and thanked you but told you that he was fine with the arrangement, he didnât mind. You mentally cursed yourself at being so transparent but you were also thankful he hadnât gotten angry.Â
For the most part, though, youâd settled into a sort of routine with Tom every day: breakfast, walk, you were free to move around the cabin as he chopped wood for an hour, heâd take you into the nursery to sit in the rocking chair for a bit to either go over possible baby names or to sit and read to the baby or to play music (he had gotten the same pair of fetal headphones you did), lunch, a nap he insisted you take each day to help you rest better while he fixed things up around the cabin, a free couple of hours to do whatever you wanted, dinner, another walk, shower, and then bed.Â
You were following this routine one such day when Miles appeared to have finally lost his mind altogether.Â
It was dinnertime and you had come into the main room with a book in your hand. When setting up the nursery here, Tom had bought the same books you had to prepare for the pregnancy. You were able to pick up where you left off in What To Expect When Youâre Expecting. You sat down as Tom came in with a plate of carrots for you to snack on. He smiled when he saw your nose in the book, mindlessly reaching out for a carrot, and dropped a kiss on your head. âWhat chapter are you on?â
âStill on the eighth month,â you answered without looking at him, taking a bite out of the carrot.Â
âMmm,â he hummed against your hair. âMaybe youâll finish it by the time we eat. Iâve got about ten more minutes left and then weâre good to go.âÂ
âThatâs fine. Iâve got carrots to munch on and plenty to read in the meantime.â You held the book up in gesture.Â
He chuckled and dropped another kiss to your head before walking away. You immediately got back to reading.Â
Out of the corner of your eye, you saw Tom loosen Milesâ gag and then shove two pieces of white bread in his mouth. âHere, dipshit.â He slammed a small plastic cup of water on the arm of his chair, spilling most of it and not really caring. âEnjoy.â
Tom left the room with a glare over his shoulder in Milesâ direction.Â
Miles spit out the bread and turned furious eyes on you. You ignored him, choosing to go back to your chapter.Â
âYou stupid, crazy fucking whore.â
Your jaw tightened but you remained silent, picking up another carrot to snack on.
âYou hear me? Youâre so desperate for dick youâre playing house with that crazy fucker.â
You could feel yourself tense up but you simply turned the page.Â
âYouâre a stupid fucking crazy whore and I always knew you were.â
You rolled your eyes. âCareful, Miles, youâre starting to sound like a broken record.â
That had been a mistake to say. A shark-like grin appeared on Milesâ face â well, as much as it could with his face beat to hell. âYou want to hear something different? Alright, how about this? When I get outta here and I will get outta here, Iâm going to kill that motherfucker right in front of you. Iâm going to bash his skull in while you watch. Then when Iâm done with him, Iâm going to come for you.â You tried not to show it but you could feel an age-old fear creeping up on you. âSince youâre such a whore, Iâm gonna use you like the whore you are, over and over again, until youâre crying and begging me to stop. And just like old times, I wonât.â You could feel the tremors starting up. âIâll even fuck you right next to his corpse so you can cry all over his brains on the ground. And then when Iâm finished with you, good and finished, Iâm going to beat the hell out of you but not before I cut that baby out of you and strangle it with its own cord right in front of you. Then if youâre somehow still alive after all that, Iâm gonna kill you. And Iâm gonna get a medal for it. âHero cop stops modern-day Bonnie and Clyde from continuing their killing spree.â You just wait. The governor will be shaking my hand and I may even get a call from the goddamn President, thanking me for my service. I put down three rabid dogs, all for the price of one, the one I was tracking down in the first place. Iâm gonna be a goddamn hero for this, for ripping you and your evil spawn from this world. Howâs that for a new record, you crazy whore?â
A tear slipped down your cheek and he laughed.Â
âI shouldâve fucking gotten rid of you when I had the chance. Now, Iâll have that chance and Iâm going to enjoy it.â He laughed again.
You wiped your cheek just in time for Tom to walk in with a bow of mashed potatoes. You noticed that for all of Milesâ bravado a moment earlier, he sure got quiet when Tom walked into the room.Â
Tom placed the bowl down on the table. âJust give me five more minutes.â He glanced up and immediately knew something was off. âWhatâs wrong?â
You gave him a thin smile. âNothing,â you assured him. âLooks like Iâm not going to make it to the ninth month chapter after all.â You placed the book down; you had lost your appetite for both knowledge and for food. âIâm actually not feeling well so I think Iâm going to go to bed early.â
He tilted his head, confused. âBut you were feeling fine a few minutes ago. Was it the carrots? Or something elseâŠ?â
You shook your head, ignoring Milesâ chuckling under his breath. âI just need to lay down. Iâm sorry, I know you worked hard on dinner. Can you save me some for tomorrow?â
Tomâs eyes darted to Miles, his jaw tightening. âOf course. Get some rest and feel better, sweetheart. Iâm here if you need anything.â
âThanks.â You turned and left the room, wincing when you heard Miles yelling out in pain presumably from Tom hitting him but you refused to turn back and look.
<-->
When you got out of the shower and dressed in the sleeveless maternity nightgown Tom had thought to buy for you, you wiped the condensation off the mirror with a hand and stared into it. You couldnât believe the things Miles had said to you but then again it was Miles, so you could. A part of you wondered if Tom was right; would it be safer for you and your baby if Miles was gone for good? You shook the thought from your head, not even wanting to entertain it. No matter how horrific Miles was, no matter how dangerous, you werenât a killer. Even if he was killed by some other means, you didnât want to be the one responsible. You were better than that, a better person. You wouldnât become like Miles and let him win. Â
You heard a soft knock on the door. âY/N?â
You nervously licked your lips and went to open the door. You hoped Tom wasnât upset with you for missing dinner. But when you opened it, all you saw was concern and worry staring back at you.
He ducked his head, meeting your eyes. âAre you feeling any better?â
You tried to smile but it probably came out as a grimace. âYeah.â
Tom studied you for a moment and then held out his hand which looked remarkably clean considering what he had done to Miles recently. âI want to show you something.â
Thinking it might have to do with Miles, you started to shake your head. âNo, I donâtââ
âItâs for the baby,â he soothed. âI have it right here on the bed.â
You let out a quiet breath of relief and took his hand. He kissed your forehead and led you over to the bed where a box sat on top. He urged you to get closer and take a look at it, releasing you.Â
You gazed down at the box, picking it up and looking it over. âA home fetal heart monitor?â
âYeah.â He sat down on the bed, taking the box from you and opening it. âI know you havenât been able to go for your usual checkup due to ourâŠsituation at the moment.â He pulled everything out and laid it on the bed. âI bought this long before we came here, in case we needed it. You said the baby is pretty active every day so I didnât think it was needed. But, you know what, maybe itâs not a bad idea to check in on her. What do you say?â
You were honestly floored at the gesture and you wondered if he had gotten Miles to confess what heâd said or if he overheard again. Either way, you were touched. âUmâŠâ You bit your lip, trying to keep from crying. Damn these pregnancy hormones sometimes. âYeah.â
âYeah?â He grinned.
âYeah,â you laughed, a tear slipping out as you reached for the wand.Â
He read the instructions and you both figured out how to use it. He urged you to sit back against him as he lifted the hem of your nightgown over your belly. He applied the gel and you used the wand, moving it around until your babyâs heartbeat started to sound from the speaker. You couldnât help but smile.
âThere she is,â Tom whispered into your ear in awe. âThereâs our little girl.â
You felt your eyes welling up again, joy and relief flooding through you as you listened to your babyâs steady heartbeat. You turned your head to look at Tom, seeing the same emotions reflecting back at you. âThank you,â you whispered, leaning in to kiss him. Somehow he knew just what you needed. The louder and steadier your babyâs heartbeat was, the more it drowned out Milesâ words.Â
You felt completely at peace and able to drift off to sleep soon after, with Tom wrapped around you. Your baby was okay and she was going to be safe.
Perhaps Miles was right. Maybe you were kind of playing house with a âcrazy fuckerâ as he claimed. But youâd take that crazy fucker over Miles anyday. That crazy fucker cared more about your child than he, the biological father, did. Tom cared about her, wanted her, and would do whatever it took to keep you both safe while Miles had threatened to hurt her, hurt you both. So yeah, youâd take the âcrazy fuckerâ any day of the week.
<-->
A scream startled you awake. You sat up as best as you could, glancing around the dimly lit bedroom. You could see the first shafts of morning light peeking through the windows. You were alone in the bed. âTom?â You called, scared when you didnât see him. You didnât know what youâd heard but you were frozen in terror.
Another pained scream erupted out of nowhere and it sounded like it was coming from outside. Milesâ words came back to you and you hurriedly got to your feet, realized you were nude (Tom must have taken your nightgown off to be skin on skin again; he liked that), and dressed. Your hair was still damp from your shower last night but you had no time to throw it up in a bun or ponytail. You felt sore and you noticed a few cuts on your fingers. The sight terrified you especially given how sore your body was and how you had woken up nude but Tom was nowhere to be found. Especially when you remembered Milesâ threats. âTom?â You cried but you still got no answer.Â
You made your way to the main room and gasped when you saw blood in the corner where Miles had been, partially covered by a sheet. You noticed there was blood spatter all over the walls, in almost every nook and cranny. Some of it had even landed on the table, the opposing wall, and the area of floor you were about to step on. âNo. No!â You werenât sure if you were more scared of Tom at this moment, or for him. You belatedly realized he must have overheard Miles threatening you and the baby last night and that was definitely why he brought out the fetal monitor to assure you. Youâd had such a sweet moment with it; how did you go from that to this within a matter of hours?
You ran out the door, the screen door slamming back against the house. You didnât see anything or anyone in the distance. You heard the screaming again and it seemed like it was coming from the surrounding woods to your right.Â
âTom!â You screamed.Â
You ran back inside, looking for anything you could use as a weapon, maneuvering as best you could with your stomach but not finding anything, and hurried back out to the porch. You had to stop Tom. Miles had been horrific to you and didnât deserve your intervention but you couldnât let this happen to him. He was a human being, a horrible disgusting human being, but a human being nonetheless. You were about to hurry down the stairs when a bloody Tom appeared in front of you, a pickaxe in his hand.Â
You froze, unsure if you should run back inside or if that would even make a difference. You held a hand over your mouth and your eyes filled with tears when you noticed something hanging from one side of the pickaxeâs blade that looked suspiciously organ-like.
He came to a stop in front of you, near the bottom of the stairs, and you felt like you couldnât breathe. âIs it the baby?â He asked worriedly, panting.Â
You shook your head, biting your lip to keep from yelling in terror. You couldnât keep the tears from spilling down your face, though.Â
He saw and his brows drew together until realization dawned upon his face. He dropped the pickaxe to the ground and spoke gently. âIâm okay, sweetheart. This isnât my blood.â
Tom actually thought you were worried about him, that somehow Miles had gotten a hold of him like heâd threatened and was doing horrific, unspeakable things to him. A voice deep down told you to play along. âWill you please come inside then and let me clean you up?â You fought hard to keep the wobble out of your voice.
His eyes softened and he climbed the stairs to stand before you. The sight of so much blood made you want to vomit. You werenât squeamish by any means but the amount of blood covering Tom from head to toe⊠If Miles wasnât dead already, he soon would be.Â
Tom went to reach out a hand to your cheek but then saw the blood and thought better of it, dropping it to his side.Â
âY-You promised,â you forced out.
âI did.â
âWhy then? W-Why did you break it? We wereâŠwe were doing so well,â you sobbed out.
His jaw tightened but his eyes saddened. âWe still are. Let me go finishâŠthat. Iâll come back, clean up, and then weâll talk.â He said it as if he was simply going to finish chopping firewood and then come back for lunch.Â
âTom,â you gasped, trying to breathe through the sobs tearing out of you. âIf you continue ro torture him, I canât be with you.â
His brows furrowed again and you waited for the terrifying expression youâd seen all too often to make a reappearance. Instead, he looked more confused than ever. âIâm not torturing him, Y/N.â
âYes, you are. I heard him screaming.â
His lips parted in shock and he went to reach out for you again. This time, you flinched and moved backwards on reflex. He dropped his hand and curled it into a fist. You were scared that you angered him but God, how could you live with yourself if you let him go continue killing Miles slowly and brutally?Â
âSweetheart,â he spoke gently. âNo one was screaming. Except you.â
âI know what I heard, Tom!â Was he seriously trying to gaslight you right now into believing you had been hearing things? The bloody pickaxe was still on the ground, with whatever attached it, for crying out loud. âIt woke me up!â
His eyes softened then. âMiles was dead before I dragged him out here. You sawâŠinsideâŠno one could have survived that.â
You felt like your heart stopped. The way he talked about murdering another human being so casually made your blood run cold.Â
He took another step closer and you took another step backwards. He held out a placating hand but all you could see was the blood caked on his skin. âY/N, look at me.â You lifted your gaze to his and only then did you notice how badly you were shaking. âI need you to take some deep breaths and relax.â
âRelax?â You laughed. âAre you kidding me?â
âYou need to stay calm for the baby.â
You huffed out a snort in disbelief but after a moment, you realized he was right. The last thing you needed right now was for labor to start early or for there to be any complications when you were this remote. You forced yourself to take deep breaths.Â
âGood.â He gave you a tiny smile. âNow, I need you to listen to me.â
You focused on your breathing, not wanting to listen to him but you had no choice.
âI need you to go inside and pack your things. Thereâs a bag under the bed you can put your clothes and the babyâs clothes in. When Iâm done, Iâll come in, clean myself up, and get the rest of what weâll need.â
Your jaw dropped. âYouâre taking me somewhere else? Are you serious?â You felt like your mind was unraveling. âWhat aboutâ What about the nursery?â You could care less about the nursery right now but it was what your mind grasped onto, trying to make sense of everything that was happening.Â
âWeâll take most of it with us. Donât worry. I can recreate it in the new place. Quickly, too, before she comes.â
âAnother remote cabin?â You snapped.
He shook his head. âA home. For us, for our family. Thereâs a swingset in the backyard and everything.â
You narrowed your eyes at him. âJust how long have you been planning this? First this cabin? Now a house? How long, Tom?â You demanded.
He seemed unsure how to answer but he said, âAs long as Iâve had to. Now, please, go inside and pack. If you hear anything, just know Iâm okay and heâs already dead. Alright?â
You kept focusing on your breathing, not answering him.
âI promise Iâll explain everything once weâre on the road.â
The road? Depending on which road he planned to take, there may be other cars on that road, places he needed to pull over for gas â people. You could possibly flag someone down for help or even make an escape attempt that might be successful. The road was good. It meant opportunity.Â
You took another deep breath and nodded, opening the screen door and walking inside, refusing to look back at Tom or the massacre-decorated corner of the main room.Â
<-->
You had packed everything Tom had told you to: your clothes, the baby clothes, your book, any necessities. After a while, Tom had come back, spent a few hours attempting to clean the blood from the main room which he urged you to keep the bedroom door shut for with the bedroom window open in case, jumped in the shower, and then urged you out the door. He packed everything else up into his truck. Heâd even disassembled the crib and tied the rocking chair down securely in the truck bed. The changing table was being left behind as well as the cubbies heâd stored the books and toys in but everything else came with. He also managed to quickly pack a cooler of food and drinks, and took whatever he could from the cupboards. It was an odd sensation, standing by the truck as he did all of this, not offering to help. A part of you wanted to but the other part was still angry with him for killing Miles and breaking his promise to you. Another third smaller part was scared to death that you were about to share the same fate, or at least you would once the baby was born. Tom wanted your baby; that was crystal clear to you now as you noticed the larger percentage of what was packed had more to do with the baby than anything else. While he had told you he wanted you all to be a family, perhaps he was just waiting for you to give birth and then that would be it. For you.
You focused on maintaining your breathing and told yourself you would get away long before that could happen.Â
Once everything was packed up and the cabin was closed up, Tom opened the passenger door for you and helped you up into the seat. You wouldnât have accepted his help if you thought you could get up there yourself but a very big belly tended to offset everything. He got into the driver seat, slipped a baseball cap on, and pulled away from what had been your temporary home for a few weeks.Â
It was about fifteen miles on the highway or so, with nary a car in sight, that you finally turned to Tom (who you had been ignoring this entire ride so far) and asked the question that had been sitting in the back of your brain. âYou heard him last night, didnât you?â
Tom turned a confused expression onto you.Â
âWhen he threatened me.â
His eyes hardened and his jaw clenched, turning back to the road ahead. âNo. I didnât. I knew he had probably said something to upset you but I didnât know he did that. Had I, I wouldâveâŠâ He shook his head, angry, clenching a fist. âMakes sense, though.â
âWhat makes sense?â
He nervously licked his lips and reached over to pick up your hand. You went to yank it back but he tightened his grip and placed a kiss to your skin. âI promised I would tell you everything and I will.â
âNow seems like a good a time as any,â you seethed, still trying to pull your hand back but he wouldnât let you.
âLetâs get some driving out of the way first. Weâve got a ways to go and Iâd rather we put as much distance as we can between us and that cabin.â
âYeah, I bet,â you muttered.Â
He seemed displeased with your reaction but he let your hand go and continued focusing on the road. And for the first time since this whole thing started, you couldnât be bothered to give a damn. That worried you a bit because you should be trying to keep him happy, calm, trusting, and instead you were doing the exact opposite. But the anger and betrayal you felt seemed to be overriding everything at the moment.
<-->
âHey. Y/N.â
You were being gently shaken awake and you opened your eyes, glancing all around you. You were still in the front seat of the truck and the sun was starting to go down. You turned to see Tom rubbing your shoulder.Â
âYou need to use the bathroom, sweetheart?â He murmured.Â
Almost as if on cue, your bladder started to hurt. You nodded, rubbing your eyes.Â
âOkay.âÂ
He jumped out of the truck and made his way over to your side. He opened your door and lifted you to the ground, grunting in the effort. Had he been someone else, you wouldâve felt bad for the strain he was putting on his body in doing so.Â
You were at a rest stop where other cars surrounded you. You saw families milling about, couples, friends traveling together â people.
He grabbed your hand and gripped it tightly. âStay close to me.â Of course he wanted you to stay close to him. He didnât want you running off for help after all.
You let him lead you into the building as you tried to formulate a plan to escape him. He held you closer as he pushed his way through people waiting in line for the various food vendors available and brought you to the womenâs bathroom. Thankfully, there was no line. You were just waiting to get in there and lock the door behind you. But as luck would have it, he opened the door himself and ducked his head in. When he determined it was clear, he urged you in ahead of him and locked you both inside.
âIâll be right here if you need me.â
You glared at him and went to find a stall, realizing heâd already anticipated your plan. When you found one, you relieved the pangs of your bladder and tried to think of a new plan. You heard him checking the other stalls around you as a precaution.Â
Technically, there were a lot of people around. If you screamed in the middle of the crowd, he couldnât do anything about it. You smiled to yourself. Yeah, you liked that plan.
You finished doing what you needed to do and exited the stall to wash your hands. While you were drying them, arms came around you, a hand tenderly placed against your belly, and you heard Tom whisper in your ear, âI love you. I love both of you. I donât know what Iâd do if I lost either of you.â He pressed a kiss to your cheek. âIâm sorry I didnât know what he said. If I had, maybe I couldâve done something to keep this morning from happening.â
You refused to look at him, in the mirror or next to you. Too little, too late. âYou broke your promise to me, Tom.â
âI didnât break my promise to you, sweetheart.â
âReally?â You spun around, glaring up at him. âAnd what do you call this morning? Look, Miles was a despicable human being who did the most horrific things to me a long time ago and threatened to do even more horrific things if he got loose, but he was still a human being. You know what? Itâs not even about him. I didnât even ask you not to kill him for him, I asked you not to kill him for me. Not because I cared in the slightest what happened to him, but because I canât be with someone who just goes around killing people because they can! I have a baby to think about, Tom! What if she cries too loudly or she doesnât put her toys away when we tell her to? What then?â
With each word you said, he looked more and more pained. âIâm going to be a good father to her, Y/N. Iâm really doing the best I can to keepâŠcertain impulses in control. Itâs not easy. Even when there are certain risky things going on that are tempting those impulses.â
âWhat?â What was he talking about?
âI didnât want to have this conversation until we got to the house but if you need to hear it now so you know how much I love you and the baby, then so be it. Y/N, Iââ
A loud pounding sounded on the door. âThe doorâs locked!â Some woman yelled.Â
âShit,â he muttered before turning to look down at you pleadingly. âLook, I get that you can walk out that door, scream for help, I would have to run, and then youâd never see me again. But Christ, Y/N, Iâm asking you to please give me a chance to explain. Just one. If you donât want to be with me after that or allow me to be her dad,â He swallowed compulsively at that part. âThen you two can stay in the new house and Iâll move on. I promise.â
âHey, some of us have to go to the bathroom, too! Open up!â
You gritted your teeth and glanced up at him skeptically. âAnother promise?â
âI havenât broken the last one I made to you yet.â
You shot him a look.Â
âOpen up or weâre going to report you!â
âReport me to who?â You snapped at the door. âThe bathroom police? Please.â You turned back to Tom who was smirking down at you. âWhat?â
He only smirked wider and offered you his hand. You realized you must definitely be nuts because after a moment, you took it. He leaned down to kiss your nose, whispering, âThank you.â
A second later, he gripped your hand tightly. âNo matter what, we keep our heads down and just get back to the truck. Deal?â   Â
You gave him a hesitant nod and moved closer to his back, so he could break through the crowds for you both. Â
He unlocked the door and opened it, rushing past a couple of women standing sentry at the door. The loud one yelled at you as you passed, âReally? Thatâs what we were waiting on? Disgusting! I should report you both!â
You had the strongest urge to yell something back but Tom squeezed your hand and hurried out of there, ignoring any onlookers.Â
You were just about to step into the parking lot when you heard a feminine giggle to your right. You glanced over and saw a young woman flirting with a young guy. She was touching his jaw with the tip of her finger, and he was smirking down at her. Â
She giggled again and the images in front of you began to swim. Suddenly, another image overtook it.Â
You were back in your house, at the top of the stairs, watching as your friend Cindy was all smiles at Tom. He was coming down off of the ladder from installing the light at the top of the foyer. He gave her a polite smile and when she asked where you were, he said you were upstairs resting, the baby had been really active that morning.
Cindy watched as he wiped his hands on a rag and she sidled up to him. âTom, what are you doing? Playing house with the new weird pregnant girl who wonât tell anyone where sheâs from, and stepping in as Daddy? It doesnât suit you. Youâre young and strong and full of life. Donât let her suck it out of you.â Your grip on the railing tightened.
Tom had politely pushed her away. âI love her, Cindy. I love them both. Theyâre my life. Now, if you canât accept that or even speak nicely about her in her own home, then I think itâs time for you to leave.â He gestured towards the door.
Cindy tried once more. âBut, Tom, we had some fun times together, didnât we? Wouldnât you prefer that to whatever this is?â She gestured around the foyer in disgust.
âYes, we did. And no, I donât. Like I told you at the Christmas party, Iâm not interested. So, please leave.â
âUgh, fine. Call me when you get bored of the fake family routine.â She was walking towards the door finally. You could see Tomâs jaw tighten as he watched her go, his hands clenched in fists at his sides.
You quietly hurried down to the last few steps, plastering a big smile on your face. âCindy, is that you?â
Tomâs gaze snapped over to you and Cindy spun on her heel with the biggest fake smile. âY/N! I was just asking after you. Tom told me you were getting some rest so I figured Iâd drop by later to see how you were doing.â
You made your way down the stairs, Tom holding out a hand to help you. You gave him a smile of thanks and laid a hand on your belly, rubbing. âYeah, she was being a little overactive this morning and tired Mommy out.â You then placed your hands on your belly as if you were blocking the babyâs ears. âUsually happens after a great night of sex,â you said in a more conspiratorial tone.
Tom grinned down at you. âDamn right it does.â He pulled you to him, kissing you.
You chuckled against his lips, playfully pushing away from him, your cheeks warm. âTom, we have company.â You inclined your head in Cindyâs direction who still had the fake smile going.Â
Tom shrugged. âShe was just leaving.â He leaned in to kiss you again when you laughed and turned to let him kiss your cheek instead.Â
âOh my word, you two are just too cute together. Like a Christmas card without all of theâŠChristmas,â Cindy let out in a laugh.
Tom moved and slipped his arms around you from behind, pressing kisses to your cheek as he rubbed at your belly.Â
âSo, Cindy, what did you drop by for?â You asked, playfully slapping at Tomâs hand that was subtly moving above your belly. He snickered into your ear before nibbling on it.
âYou know what, you seem a little busy right now, hun. Iâll drop by later so we can talk.â
You gave her a bright smile. âThatâd be great. Iâll put coffee on for you and tea for me, and weâll chat then.â
âAbsolutely! See you then!â She wiggled her fingers in a goodbye and then was out the door.
Your smile dropped as soon as the door closed. Tom saw and placed his lips at your ear. âI take it you heard all of that before you came down?â
You turned a stone cold expression on him.Â
He sighed and laid his forehead against yours. âI love you and want to be with you. Only you. You know that.â
âBut youâve been with her?â
âIt was only a couple of times, purely casual. It was done before you even came to town.â
You gripped his chin tightly. âAre you sure you want to give up fun times together and play Daddy?â
His brows drew together, studying you. âYes. Sweetheart, if I didnât want to, I wouldnât be here.âÂ
Your expression softened and you released him. âYou mean that?â You whispered.
He gave you a soft smile and kissed you. âWe could be up in the mountains somewhere, just the three of us, and Iâd be happy. So, yes, sweetheart, I mean it. Weâre a family and nothing is going to threaten that. I promise.â
You hugged his arms around you and leaned back against him, relaxing and smiling. You really had no idea what you had done to deserve Tom coming into your life when he did.Â
Which is why you were so desperate to keep him with you, to keep your family together. When Cindy walked into your kitchen a few hours later, you were determined to lay down the law. To let her know that you overheard her earlier and while you appreciated her helping you find this house (and Tom by extension), she was no longer welcome in it. Instead, though, she ended up dead. She made a comment to you about Tom that was heavy with implication and before you knew it, you attacked her. Multiple stab wounds to the body after a smashed coffee pot over her head that caused third-degree burns. She just wouldnât stop screaming.
Tom arrived back from a trip to the store and found you in the kitchen, still stabbing her long after she finally stopped screaming, his eyes wide. He wrestled you for the knife and tossed it before gripping your face and staring into your eyes. âY/N, itâs me! Look at me! Y/N!â
You both heard your backdoor opening, and in walked your estranged husband who you had been running from. Milesâ eyes were wide as he took in the bloody scene in front of him and he whistled, chuckling. âAlways knew you were a crazy whore.â Tom immediately recognized him from the picture youâd shown him and he let you go, fury filling his expression.Â
Tom attacked him and they fought. Miles had somehow managed to best Tom at one point and he was about to go to town on him when you hit him with a frying pan. It gave Tom the opportunity he needed to get out from under him and before Miles could even try to attack you once he recovered, you held a knife to his throat as Tom grabbed another one, that same fury in his eyes.
âAh, ah, ah,â you told Miles. âOne move and you die.â
âYou stupid bitch, Iâll fucking kill you,â he spit. You pressed the blade into his neck a little more.Â
Tom rushed him, ready to kill him when you held a hand up, stopping him. âNo. He lives.â Tom glared up at you, unsure of why you were stopping him. âWe take him with us, make him watch and hear everything, and we have some fun.â You gave Tom a wicked smile and he returned it, turning it down onto Miles who was bleeding from where youâd cut him. âDo you know a place?â You asked Tom.
âYeah.â He glanced once again at Miles, his smile widening. âI know a place.â
You were suddenly at the cabin, waking up in the middle of the night. Not caring if you were dressed or not, you slipped out of Tomâs arms and padded into the main room. You stood there, watching as Miles slept, or if he was awake like he was the night you and Tom had sex, you stood there with a knife, fucking with his head. Would you kill him? Would you not? You made sure to let him know the child you carried was biologically his but he would never see it born. Tom was its father now and he was much more of a man than Miles, as he must have heard earlier. There was even one night where Tom woke up and found you in the kitchen in the dark, holding a knife over your belly, as if you were going to stab yourself. He knocked the knife out of your hand and asked what you were doing. You said it was Milesâ child and you wanted Miles out of you. Tom held your face in his hands and assured you that the child was his and his alone.
âNo, itâs not,â you murmured.Â
âYes, it is. Listen to me, thatâs my little girl inside of you. Sheâs both of ours. He has nothing to do with it. Y/N, I donât know if you can hear me, but you love this baby and you love me. You want our family to stay together. You told me that! Please! Donât let her hurt our baby!â
âItâs our baby?â You asked in a tiny voice.
âYes, sweetheart, itâs ours. Just ours.â
You allowed him to carry you to bed and hold you there, shushing you soothingly and rubbing your belly, using your hands with his.
And then came the night Miles threatened you. This time, you stood over him with the knife.
âYou dumb whore, you donât have it in you to kill me. You wonât even let your crazy boy toy do it.âÂ
âYeah, because I want to be the one to do it.â A big smile spread across your face and you slashed at his cheek, making him curse.
âGo ahead then! Even if you kill me, youâll never be rid of me. Iâll always be a part of you, inside you, in that kid. Know that, you stupid bitch. I shouldâve fucking killed you when I had the chance!â
You started slicing and then forcefully stabbing and never really stopped. You took pieces off of him (including what could be construed as what he thought was his manhood) and he screamed, and screamed, and screamed. Tom woke up when the screaming started but you didnât stop. He tried to get you to, telling you he would take care of the rest for you, that he didnât want you to hurt yourself or the baby, but you told him no, you wanted to do this yourself. Youâd earned it. Instead, he stood there, waiting, in case you needed him. He nervously watched as you took Miles apart, his eyes repeatedly flickering to your stomach. At one point, though, you could have sworn you noticed a faint smirk on Tomâs face when Miles screamed particularly loudly and his eyes were hard but proud. Only when you were done, though Miles had been dead for a while by this point, did you turn to go back to the room. Tom stopped you with a hand on your shoulder.
âAre you hurt?â You shook your head. âOur baby?â Another shake. He let out a huge sigh of relief. âWhy donât you go take a shower and then get into bed? Iâll clean this up.â
âThanks, baby,â youâd whispered, gripping his face and lifting up on your toes to kiss him. You left Milesâ blood all over his cheeks but he still looked at you with that same reverence he always had. Once you were out of the shower, he was there to run clean hands over your belly, checking for any injuries but not finding any. Youâd smiled and kissed him, not caring about the dried blood on his face when youâd crawled onto his lap and urged him to take off his shirt.
You saw more flashing Images of you in his lap, arching your head up in pleasure, him kissing down the column of your neck, some of the blood from his face transferring onto your skin.  Â
The screams and moans echoed in your ear as you came back to yourself. You felt as if you were losing your balance and you started to fall until Tom caught you in time.
âSweetheart, whatâs wrong?â
You shook your head, not looking at him, tears streaming down your face.Â
âHey, she alright, man?â
âYou need me to call for an ambulance?â
âNo,â Tom assured the onlookers. âThank you but sheâs fine. She has low blood sugar and this happens when she forgets to eat. Let me get her back to the car so I can give her a juice box. Thank you but sheâs okay.â
He lifted you in his arms, grunting, and slowly began the trek to the truck. âI thought we had a deal, sweetheart. But youâre not getting rid of me that easily. Iâm not gonna leave you or our little girl behind at a rest stop. Not happening.â
âTom, I⊠I killed them,â you sobbed, staring up at the sky.Â
He stopped short for a second but then kept moving. âShhh. Just hang on, sweetheart. Weâre almost there.â
âI-I-I killed them.â You started to break apart. âI even threatened my baby.â
Tom picked up speed slightly and did his best to get you both back to the truck. Once there and he had you in the passenger seat, you were already hyperventilating. He gripped your face and forced you to meet his eyes. âSweetheart, we need to get your breathing under control. Letâs slow it down together, okay?â He took your hand and placed it on his chest and he placed a hand on your chest. âFollow me.â
He eventually got you to calm down a little, taking nice deep and even breaths, but it wasnât enough to make you forget what you had seen, what you had done. You thought back to what you had said to Tom. âI canât be with someone who just goes around killing people because they can!â âIf this is going to work with us, as a familyâŠyou canât kill anymore people, Tom.â Youâd blamed him for Cindyâs and Milesâ deaths!
âWhat do you say we go someplace and have that talk now?â
You nodded, more tears falling down your face at the action. He wiped your cheeks with his thumbs and kissed you before settling you into your seat. Within two minutes, you were back on the road again, his hand in yours, and you stared blankly out the window. You were a killer and Tom, even your own baby â they werenât safe.Â
<-->
âIâm so sorry, Tom.â
He turned an inquisitive gaze on you.Â
âI blamed you when it was me.â You wiped a tear away. âIâm sorry.â
You both were sitting at a picnic table in a nice parking area off the shoulder of the highway that he had managed to find. Thankfully, no one was really around. The stars beginning to come out might have something to do with that.Â
He took your hand in his and intertwined your fingers, kissing your skin. âI knew why you were saying it. You didnât remember what youâd done. Truthfully, I didnât want you to remember it.â
âItâs no excuse,â you choked out. âAnd my babyâŠâ Your eyes welled up again. âEven sheâs not safe with me.âÂ
He cupped your chin with his free hand and turned you to look at him. âYes, she is. Your ex was the trigger. Now that heâs gone, that lessens the trigger.â
âBut what if she looks like him? Or sounds like him? Or what if she does something like Cindy did and says something to trigger me? Or what if like I told you, she cries too loudly or doesnât put her toys away? Sheâs not safe.â Your eyes hurt from how much crying youâd been doing, you were surprised there were any tears left, but there were. You cried over Cindy. Sure, you didnât care for her after overhearing her that day and finding out sheâd been with Tom, only teasing you about his supposed crush on you because she never thought heâd give you the time of day and it allowed her to tease and flirt with him as well. But she didnât deserve to die over it and certainly not like that. You didnât cry too much over Miles but what youâd done. No human life deserved to be taken the way you had taken his. But you cried the most over what youâd almost done to your baby, what it meant, and how youâd have to let her go once she was born â if she was born.Â
âListen to me, Iâm going to keep you both safe, okay? Just like I promised.â
âAnd you,â you sobbed. âWhy would you want to be with a murderer? A cold-blooded killer like me? What if Iâd killed you? Or what if I do kill you? Tom, what Iâve done is bad enough but if I did something to you, I donât think Iâd ever come back from that. Or if I did something to my baby.â
He pulled you into his arms and you cried against his shirt. He moved in and gently nuzzled you despite the wetness and sniffling. âBecause I know what itâs like.â
âWhat are you talking about, you know whatâs like? Fearing going to sleep that you may not wake up from because your significant other might kill you? I know all too well what thatâs like and I donât want that for you.â
His jaw tightened but he shook his head, bumping his nose gently into yours. âNo. I mean, I know what itâs like to have a trigger and not remember what Iâve done half the time, while leaving bodies trailing behind me.â
You hiccuped and pulled back to look at him. âWhat do you mean?â
He placed his forehead against yours. âRemember I never wanted to talk about my past?â
You nodded. âYeah, you said it was too painful and I didnât want to push.â
Tom let out a heavy sigh. âYeah. But Iâm going to tell you everything, even when you donât want to hear certain parts. I donât remember a lot but Iâll tell you what I can. And Iâm only going to gloss over my trigger, not go into full detail. Iâm sure it would be fine, but I donât want to even risk it. Okay?âÂ
You took in a ragged inhale and buried your fingers into his shirt. âOkay.â
He smiled at you reassuringly and tenderly brushed hair out of your face. âOkay.â
<-->
Tom kept an eye on you while you slept, hugging onto his arm. Today was a big day for you in various ways and he wasnât quite sure if youâd be triggered again.
Heâd been completely honest with you, opening up to you about Harry and how trauma led to this other identity he had no control of. Truthfully, heâd been scared to even mention the name, afraid it would draw the other side of him out. During this whole time with you, from him finding you stabbing Cindy to death in your kitchen to now, heâd felt as if Harry was fighting to come to the surface and join in the fray. Of course, that was something the therapists heâd seen had told him wasnât possible, but even burying Milesâ mutilated corpse and using the pickaxe again felt as if he were approaching a very dangerous line.Â
At some point after Harmony, he wasnât quite sure how long, but he was in control again and Harry was nowhere to be found. He had a healing bullet wound as well as other scrapes on his head and face. He knew he could never go back to Harmony or even be Tom Hanniger again (especially after one internet search on a library computer), so he was forced to become someone else: a different Tom. He probably should have changed his first name, too, but he already had another identity waiting in the wings to take over again, he didnât want another one he needed to worry about becoming, too. Even if it was only for paperwork reasons.
He moved to a new small town, far away from his old life, and began again. He stayed mostly to himself, kept under the radar as much as he could. He was able to find work, doing small odd jobs at first, and then finding work in basically being a handyman of sorts. He had gotten to know the townspeople that way as well as the town itself. Heâd even sought help from a local therapist in the next town over whose resume boasted they specialized in DID. There, the therapist was able to help him understand the disorder better than any doctors in the institution had. He learned about triggers, working to reduce switches (as they called it), and how to overall take control of his life in more ways than one. He had been doing much better and there were no instances where he felt like he was missing time or there was something on the edge of his memories that he couldnât quite remember.Â
And then heâd met you, completely by accident. Heâd bumped into you in the hardware store, literally. Youâd dropped what had been in your hands and seeing the slim curve of your stomach, heâd immediately crouched down to pick them up for you. He locked eyes with you and he could swear you were one of the prettiest girls heâd ever seen. He cleared his throat when he realized heâd been staring at you a little too long. He immediately apologized for bumping into you and you apologized, too. He noted what you had in your hand: spackle.
âIf you donât mind me asking, youâre not planning on doing any painting, are you?âÂ
You glanced at the container in your hands. âOh, this? Oh no. I canât.â You gestured to your stomach. âBut I read on a forum online that spackling is okay.â
He arched a brow at you. âForum online?â
Your cheeks turned adorably pink. âYeah,â you defended. âAs long as it doesnât have high VOCâs I think it said, I should be fine. Plus, I plan to wear a mask and open all the windows, air it out properly.âÂ
âUh huh,â he chuckled. At your frown, he held up a placating hand. âSorry, I justâŠcanât your husband or boyfriend do that for you? So you donât have to?â
Your cheeks turned red now. âAre you saying that I canât do what they can?â You challenged.
âNope. Iâm implying that there are certain things you shouldnât be doing while pregnant. Thatâs all.â You went to say something else but he cut you off. âIâm the local handyman, a fixer upper basically. If your other half is too busy, I can swing by and help you out.âÂ
âOh.â
He handed you his card, noting no ring sitting on your finger. That answered that particular question. âMy cell phone numberâs on there so call me anytime, day or night, and Iâll come by. Are you new in town?â
You studied his card. âIs it that obvious?â
He chuckled and held out a hand. âIâm Tom.â
You took it, smiling, and shook it. âY/N.â Not only did he suddenly love that name but he loved the feel of your soft skin against his. âNice to meet you.â
âNice to meet you, too.â
You ended up calling him two days later to ask him about the spackling and his rates. Ever since your conversation with him in the store, you couldnât get what he said out of your head and now you were worried the online forum was wrong. What he didnât tell you is that he couldnât get your conversation with him out of his head, but for a whole other reason.
After an agreed rate over the phone (heâd given you a break, calling it the newcomer discount so you wouldnât question it or feel badly), he stopped by your house and you showed him where you needed the spackling done. There was a large crack in one of the walls of the living room high up. He couldnât imagine you on a ladder with a mask trying to get this crack spackled â more like he didnât want to imagine it. Cindy had been there, shooting him flirtatious smiles every time you turned your back, which he ignored. Cindy had been fun a time or two but he wasnât interested in anything more than that, something heâd already told her long before he met you. Besides, heâd trade twenty of those flirtatious smiles for one of your warm genuine ones anyday. Heâd thought you very pretty in the store but now he knew heâd been wrong; you were beautiful. And living all alone in this big, old house. It seemed like a crime to him though he was a little happy that you were single.Â
He got vibes early on that there was something in your past that you were running from. You were jumpy, slow to trust, and he could tell it took a little bit for you to feel comfortable with him alone in the house. He didnât push and he appreciated your not pushing either when it came to his own past. But he liked being around you and he definitely liked you. It took some time but you eventually got to know one another and he was helping you slowly restore your home (mostly for free at this point, what he referred to as the friend rate which made you smile and shake your head, still insisting on paying him which he would refuse). You never talked about who the father of your baby was or where he might be, but it was obvious you were going about things on your own. He admired you for that and he loved watching you walk around, lovingly rubbing your bump that was getting bigger each week.
And then, on New Yearâs Eve, after circling each other for months, you kissed him. From then on, he was yours. Even when you opened up to him about your past, all he wanted to do was protect you and the baby, be good to you, and be there for you both. He loved you well before he said it, which was after you had said it first because he hadnât wanted you to feel any pressure whatsoever. Soon enough, you both had started talking about the future â particularly, the very near future. Tom wasnât sure if he was ready to be a parent or if heâd even be a good one but he knew one thing: he loved you and your little girl very much. Heâd do anything for you two and that was good enough for him.
Then came the day Cindy made the fatal mistake of setting you off. He still wasnât sure if it was what Cindy said in the foyer or if she said something else to you when she came by later, but something caused you to snap. Tom had returned from the hardware store and had been shocked to find you covered in blood, violently stabbing the woman who appeared to already be dead. You werenât a violent person by nature. You two hardly ever argued and if you did, it was resolved within minutes. Heâd never seen you argue with anyone else. Even when you got moody occasionally, sure, he knew to tiptoe around you, but you didnât even get mean. So he had no idea where the hell this had come from. But before he could get through to you to find out if you and the baby were okay, your piece of shit ex showed up. That had been the first night Tom had felt Harry swimming dangerously close to the surface, waiting to take over. No matter what any therapist said; he knew Harry was there, he could feel him, doing his best to take over though Tom fought it. If Harry took over, he would kill every living being in the room, and that Tom would not allow to happen. Especially not when you and the baby were in the same room.
Tom let you make the call on your ex (even though he didnât completely understand it) and got you out of there. Later that night, when you passed out, heâd checked you for injuries as well as the baby. He didnât find any except some shallow cuts to your arms. He gently cleaned them and he was determined to keep a close eye on you. When you finally came to the next day, heâd had no choice but to tie you up much like your ex to wait and see what you would do. He noticed you were you again though you were looking fearfully at him. He hated to see it but he also knew it could only mean one thing: you hadnât remembered what you did. He didnât need to be a therapist to realize that you might possibly have the same situation going on that he did. When you accused him of killing Cindy, it confirmed it, though he wondered how you knew she was dead. He chalked it up to you starting to switch back and seeing the carnage before heâd been able to get you out of that house. Â
So while Tom wasnât a fan of it, he dangerously walked the line between himself and who he knew Harry to be. Your ex got the worst of Harryâs qualities: the violence, the ruthlessness, and the fury. You got the lower end of a few displeased glares and the raised volume of his voice once or twice. He didnât know what he was dealing with just yet, though he suspected, and he hoped if he kept you you, even if you were fearful of him, heâd be able to figure out how to help you.
He didnât agree with keeping Miles alive, especially since Miles was a threat to you and your baby and he had also seen what youâd done to Cindy. It was better to take care of him before he became an even bigger problem. While Tom didnât relish taking a life, and he didnât want to wake up Harry, it was clear that Miles needed to go. It was obvious that he was a trigger for you.
While he had been confused at your claims of grogginess, it soon became clear why you were really tired. Youâd worried Tom the nights heâd woken up in bed, alone, and found you either hovering over Miles, taunting him, or watching him sleep. Youâd even insisted he sit Miles up from where heâd left him in the corner the first night so the asshole could watch and listen. Watch and listen to what Tom hadnât been sure of but when you told him to make love to you the next night, to be loud while loving you, he got a pretty good idea on what the listen part was. The following morning, he realized you wanted Miles to watch what was happening before his very eyes: you were being well taken care of, you were creating a family, and you were loved. EVen though you didnât remember it most days, he tried to do right by you â both of you. The other side of you hadnât told him her name yet, but he was waiting for it. The switches were only too obvious now.Â
Youâd scared the hell out of him, though, the night he found you holding a knife over your stomach. He had already been assuring you that he loved your baby and you, that you would be a family, that your little girl was his. After that, he stepped it up while also hiding all of the sharp objects and anything that could be used as a weapon against yourself (or him) all over the cabin. Each morning, youâd never remember these incidents, though youâd held clear conversations with him and sometimes your ex.
Then youâd brutally killed Miles that night, another night Harry had been simmering on the edge. As he watched you take your revenge, when you kissed him, covering him in blood, then making love to him â that had been the closest Harry had come to breaching the surface since the night Miles showed up in your kitchen. The only thing that kept Harry back, Tom believed, was the recurring thought of you and the baby.Â
Miles being dead forced him to move up his timeline. He had this cabin for a while, only bringing you once to show you around, in case he had to ever grab you and run if your ex showed up (though he didnât tell you that because he didnât want to worry you). That was why he had replicated the nursery down to every single detail. You had worked so hard on that nursery, you were so excited when it was finished, that he hated for you to lose it should you have to run. So he slipped up to the cabin a couple of days a week when you werenât with him, and worked on getting it set up. He had even stocked the kitchen in case (only buying perishables on your second trip up there when you were truly on the run). Heâd also made sure to put a down payment on a small house some ways away in case you both needed a fresh start elsewhere. And that was where he was driving you now.
Heâd meant what he said, if you wanted him gone, he would be, but he hoped youâd keep him with you. He was already worried about your breakdown from earlier today and your constant worry for your babyâs safety. Not to mention, your ex had been a cop. While they would most likely never find his body, they would associate his disappearance with you and you would always be sought after. And since Tom had disappeared with you, theyâd either think you killed him as well or that heâd helped. So heâd alway be sought after as well. That had been one of the reasons he wanted to get out of Dodge as soon as possible but also, he wanted you as far from your main trigger as possible. And he also wanted to get you help, the same help heâd gotten (though heâd have to find another therapist now). Though he was pretty sure the baby was safe, like he kept assuring you, it wouldnât hurt to get a second opinion, an official one.Â
He glanced down at you, his eyes softening as he took you in. He loved you deeply and he wanted to be with you. He loved your baby and he wanted to be there for her, stepping in as her dad if youâd let him like you had both originally planned. You had one more month to go until the baby arrived. He hoped this new house, this new life he was bringing you to made you happy. He was going to set up the nursery again for you and this time youâd have a real living room and dining room. The kitchen wouldnât be so cramped or outdated and you would have a nice, comfortable mattress to sleep on at night. It may not be what your old house was but he would still make it as nice as possible for you. Once he sorted out your paperwork through an old contact of his, you would have access to doctors, the hospital â whatever you needed. The house had a nice backyard for kids to run and play in and the swingset came with the deal which was nice. Tom had even checked to make sure it was in a good school district and a safe neighborhood.
You moved in your sleep, cuddling his arm more and murmuring something he couldnât make out. He smiled down at you and leaned over to drop a kiss onto your head before glancing back at the road. Â
He was going to take care of you. Both of you. And the baby. He would keep you all safe. Just like heâd promised.

Shadow Creature Graves seems like a gremlin. He takes things and hides them. He took Ghost's mask and hid it in Soap's room to stir up trouble. Everyone is getting annoyed and ask Price to deal with it
hopefully the formatting looks ok :<
experimenting with short writing stories, wrote this in class LMFAOO
đ
Price was already having a bad morning.
His coffee mug was constantly being moved everytime he placed it down, and he always heard a faint giggling from the action. Gaz had complained to him that the sugar and salt were mixed up and ended up with sugar on his eggs. Alex had also complained that he found plastic spiders scattered across the bathroom. Now, Ghost and Soap were arguing amongst themselves, supposedly about Ghostâs mask missing and was conveniently in Soapâs room, and everyone near was well beyond annoyed to some degree.
Of course, Price knew who was the real culprit, he wasnât stupid and had put up with Gravesâ antics before but now he was messing with everyone else. Graves could be anywhere at any time so Price couldnât exactly just track him down and confront him about it. He would like to take care of the issue when it first started but instead, he found a peculiar black fluffy cat resting by an open window in his office, the sunâs orange rays sinking into the fur. Its eyes opened at the sound of his footsteps, staring at Price with a mischievous glint in its eyes.
With a sigh, Price placed down some files he had in his hand on the table, âfun morning today?â
The catâs whiskers raised before sitting up and disappearing into a cloud of black mist, the fog disappearing to reveal a blonde man with a scar on his left cheek. On his head, neatly sat a pair of black hazy antlers and twin black deer ears on either side of his head. There Graves sat in the open window frame, a smug smile across his lips.
âI had nothing to do while the base was asleep,â Graves smiled. âYou know I canât enjoy closing my eyes to rest as much as you humans do, Captain.â
Priceâs lips straightened as he moved closer to the shadow creature, hearing the soft jingles of Gravesâ tactical gear and gentle thuds as Price was sure the deer-like manâs tail was going for miles, âyou know you could always do your little tricks on me, just would prefer if it wasnât anyone else who was the victim.â
Graves frowned, âitâs getting boring around here, John. I donât know what to do when the base is inactive.â
Price thought for a moment before gently grabbing one of Gravesâ antlers and directing the man to look at him, âyou know, you can always sleep with me, love. Stay in my bed until the sun rises.â
There was a stutter, a pause as Gravesâ face took a moment to register before a blush appeared, his ears lowered with his face heated. Price chuckled, watching the shadow creature lose composure with the more rapid sound of equipment jingling from the back of Graves. The solid antler dissolved into mist while Graves moved his head away before reappearing as solid once it was no longer in Priceâs reach.
âSounds like a fair trade? Getting to lay with me until sunrise in exchange to no longer mess with my crew?â
âOkay.â
âGood boy.â
âShut up, John.â
âI think it suits you.â
âShut up.â

Alex and Friends Part Two
More of the story that nobody asked for! Alex punches firsts and asks questions later.
cw: cursing, violence, blood, misunderstandings, minor medical stuff
âShe's gone again,â Eric announced. He was starting to get nervous. What was supposed to be a simple retrieval had gone south very quickly. The point of this had been to get her out before an attack, but theyâd been a couple hours too late. Alexis had collapsed, and was currently bleeding out in a hallway.
Eric had become a sort of living heart monitor while Joseph dressed her wound. Ericâs best guess had been that a bullet had grazed her hip. It was bleeding quite a lot though, and it had been for far too long. To make matters worse, she appeared to be borderline hypothermic. Her clothing and her hair were soaked, and she smelled like dirty river. They needed to staunch her bleeding, and get her warmed up before she entered the blood loss-hypothermia death spiral.
âDone,â Joseph said, finishing off his bandaging. Alex hadnât stirred the whole time heâd be bandaging her wound, and he hadnât been exactly gentle about it. Heâd known Eric long enough that he was starting to get worried just about now.
Eric started to stand. âHer pulse is getting thready. Letâs get her to the van.â
Joseph scooped her up into bridal carry as Eric talked to Avia, telling her that they were coming. Quickly, they rushed down the stairs. Time was of the essence if they were going to save her.
***
Alex knew that sheâd been moved. Even with her brain a million miles away from her body, she could tell. Itâd been happening recently, whenever somebody touched her too much. Or at all, really. The only time she could stand physical contact was during a fight.
She kind of was glad she wasnât conscious. Whoever sheâd let capture her were people she wasnât really dying to meet, and this time, her brain had run far enough to escape the pain. Normally it pierced into her brain like shards of broken glass, but todayâs void was thankfully pain free.
It was also, surprisingly, warm. Alex had expected it to be cold. The Vltava wasnât renowned for its warmth, nor for its cleanliness. It suddenly dawned on her that her graze was going to be infected. Almost surely. And it was going to be even harder to nd supplies to treat it with, considering her current captivity. Maybe her captors would give her supplies to treat it with. That required hope, though, which she found scarce at the moment.
Alex wasnât good at hope.
The void was pierced by a distant, faraway voice. âI think sheâs waking up.â
The words sent Alexâs heart rate through the ceiling. Were they watching her? Creeps.
She made an attempt to pull her eyes open. Nothing happened for what seemed like forever but was probably only a few seconds, but then her eyelids parted to reveal a red-light bathed ceiling. Red light, meant to preserve night vision. Alex had never struggled with that. It looked empty, but then the second manâs face from the hallway entered her vision. At least, Alex thought it was the man from the hallway. Her vision was very blurry from the brightness of the lights.
Ultimately, it wouldnât have mattered if Santa Claus had appeared over her head, the end result would have been the same. She instinctively reached out to punch the blurry man in the face.
Pulling herself to sitting, Alex freed her hands and let them go straight for his throat. She felt a sting in her arms and side as she moved, but it didnât stop her. Theyâd taken her combat knife, but that would only prolong their lives, not save them.
Alex felt whatever gurney theyâd had her lying on wiggle as she pushed off it. She took a quick note of surroundings-what appeared to be the back of a van fitted with surveillance equipment, and a rather impressive medical suite. Three other people were already pushing themselves into action. It occurred to her that this was a fight she probably wouldnât win.
She didnât need to win. She needed to escape.
Alex pivoted, having stunned the man enough that she could make for doors. She darted over the gurney. Before she could escape, a hand wrapped around her ankle and pulled her back. Her stomach caught on the edge of the gurney, and her mouth popped open as the wind was knocked out of her. The impact left her reeling, and that was just enough time for eight hands to seize her, dragging her back onto the gurney. She lay there, panting, willing her lungs to catch air, as the man from the hallway started to speak.
âI need you to calm down, Shevchenko. Youâre going to injure yourself.â He spoke in a voice that had far too much worry in it. More importantly, however, heâd called her by her name. That was a very, very bad sign.
Alex bucked and fought against her captors. So many hands clamped down hard on her ankles and wrists, holding her arms and thighs. Only one hip was pinned down, her injured one left untouched for some reason. Even then it was too much. âGet fucking off me!â She yelled, trying to wiggle herself free.
âI canât do that until I know youâll let us help.â He said calmly, his hands still pressed against her shoulders. âWeâre INSUPA, weâre your friends.â
At first, Alex thought that the INSUPA mention was a lie to get her to calm down. But, when he readjusted his grip on her shoulders, his sleeve moved up just enough to reveal something that made her reconsider.
It was a tattoo on the inside of his wrist. It was a stylized olive branch, with an anatomically correct drawing of a heart placed over it. A long time ago, Alex had nearly gotten one of those, before other life events superseded. The unocial INSUPA medical branch logo. âIâm not part of INSUPA. I didnât call their help line. Why are you here?â
âAlbatross, Shevchenko. Weâve been briefed.â The man said, âA supervillain got wind of you, we were sent in to evacuate. My boss was going to meet you in your apartment to chat, but you collapsed.â
âNext time, lead with that.â Alex said as she relaxed, exhaustion flooding her veins. The hands released her, and she fell limp. She reminded herself to have a strong word with her handler about the next time they send someone for her.

BigBang fic Sneak-Peek
@shadowmonkeysbigbang Hereâs a little sneak-peek of my Big Bang fic! Thankfully the whole thing is written, but I have a fair amount of editing to do so Iâm trying to motivate myself to get on with it đ
Iâm also torn between two possible endings which is slightly complicating matters...
Current word-count (spread across nine chapters): 44, 742 đŹ
Iâm not artistically minded enough to make a mood-board but here were some musical inspirations (not including Arctic Monkeys/TLSP):
Death In Vegas - Dirge
Rammstein - Zeit
The Eagles - Hotel California
Richard Hawley - The Ocean
Pink Floyd - Brain Damage/Eclipse
Alex wakes to the caress of a ghost.
Consciousness returns with patience, guiding his mind into the present with sensations too pleasurable to abandon with any great haste. His limbs feel heavy, weighted down by tangled sheets and a firm body draped across his back. Any light Alex senses behind closed eyelids is honeyed and warm, promising the embrace of a golden sun, as morning birdsong and soft breaths tickle his ears. As he crawls towards reluctant wakefulness, he finds himself unable to contain a small, sated smile as slender fingers graze along his arm, eliciting goosebumps in their wake. Alex knows whose face will greet him when he wakes, and heâs torn between the urge to throw himself into Milesâs arms and his desire for this moment to stretch on forever. Â
Miles must be growing bored, however. Either that or Alexâs attempts to conceal his smile are woefully insufficient. The gentle caress of his arm stops without warning, yet before Alex can complain, a trail of kisses is left on his nape instead. He remains still as Miles migrates from his neck to his shoulder; from his shoulder to his cheek and into his tangled mop of hair. Â
Much as Alex wants to wake up fully and return the favour, heâs also wary of breaking the spell. Wakefulness will bring a new day with new responsibilities, and much as heâd like to convince himself otherwise, Alex knows they can hardly spend all day in bed. Theyâve tried that on several occasions in the past, and while it always sounds like a good idea first thing in the morning, itâs never long before interruptions arrive in the form of ringing phones or knocks on the door (often at the most inopportune moments) or often just sheer restlessness. The space Alex occupies now â this unknowable space between dreams and waking â is the only thing sparing him from the eventuality of Miles no longer resting by his side.
It isnât long before Miles leans over to brush his lips against Alexâs own, and he finds himself incapable of holding back a contented smile. A musical laugh tickles his cheek and a delicate finger brushes a stray curl behind Alexâs ear, eliciting cool tingles across his scalp. What was once pleasant light glimpsed through closed eyelids is now a tad too bright, and with a sense of finality, Alex finally flutters into wakefulness before turning to face his sweetest tormenter.
An ache of longing grips his chest as he takes in Milesâs gentle smile. His sun-kissed skin appears golden in the morning light, the glow bathing him as though he were a Greek god setting his sights upon a meek mortal lover. His hair is starting to grow long again, with dark strands curling at his nape, and Alex yearns to run his fingers through it and pull Miles in for a kiss. A heavy-lidded gaze and lazy grin betray Milesâs own residual sleepiness, but heâs no less beautiful for it, and Alex wishes he could find an excuse to gaze at him until the sun elects to devour the Earth once and for all.
âMorning beautiful,â Miles says, as he always does whenever heâs the first to wake. Â
Alex canât help but frown as the words reach him just a second too late; too distant and broken to have emerged from the smiling man before him. The Miles he hears and the Miles he sees are two entirely different entities. One looks content and peaceful while the other sounds lost and scared. The mismatch shatters the illusion before Alex can salvage his grip on it, leaving him with the impression of having stumbled into an antique mirror. Cold grief washes over him as cracks trail across Milesâs skin and the morning glow dims to ghostly moonlight, and in the space of a blink, Alex wakes to find himself alone in an unfamiliar bed, his hand unconsciously reaching out for a lover who may never return to him.

I might have already done a version of this, but I really like the idea of Lena saving Kara alone.
I know it deprives Alex of the honor (and honestly I'd be down to explore the ramifications of that too), but after Lena's admission of guilt this week, I feel like it's only fitting that this be the last thing that Lena fixes. Out of all of Lex's schemes, this is the one thing she goes back on her word for, crosses him just one more time, to save the woman the world needs most.
She wouldn't want to bring the others along because it's risky, and because she can't deprive Earth of any more heroes than it's already lost. But Lena... Lena can risk herself because she's not a hero. She's just... Lena. And for now, that will be enough.
She leaves a note before she goes, and Alex comes back from a food run to find the Lexosuit gone and a scrap of paper that reads "there was never going to be a guarantee. If I don't come back, tell Kara that I never stopped looking."
Armed with only the Lexosuit thrusters and a portal watch that's keyed to the Tower's location, Lena starts looking. She hops from phantom zone to phantom zone, searching for any hint of Kara. The phantoms show her the worst timelines-- drowning with her mother... L-Corp in ruins... killing Kara with the kryptonite lodged in her chest. But she perseveres, until she reaches the remains of the anchor. In a building not too far away, she finds a man who looks familiar around the eyes.
He looks at her with resignation in his eyes and tells her to get it over with.
"Kill me," he says, "and end my misery."
Lena sees the small crest of the house of el among the folds of his robes, and suddenly understands why the man looks familiar. Retracting the faceplate of her helmet, Lena looks upon him with her own eyes.
"My name is Lena Luthor. I'm here to rescue you and your daughter."
Zor El looks at her like she's a phantom herself-- gaze glassy and devoid of comprehension. Lena kneels, and meets his eye with direct intent.
"Where is Kara Zor el?"
And that's how she learns that Kara was in the anchor when it exploded. Or at least, that's what Zor El thinks. Lena knows better.
She leaves him where he is and barricades the door herself, then sets off for the nearest ridge, the only cover for what seems like miles. It's days before she staggers upon Kara's unconscious form, her skin so pale it's nearly blue. Lena hauls Kara over her shoulders and returns to the supply room.
As soon as she sees Zor El still alive and mobile, she keys her watch to open the portal.
"I can only carry one of you," she tells him. "And the portal is a one way trip."
Her implication is clear: limp through it himself, or continue to not-die here in the phantom zone for another eternity. His choice.
Supergirl likely would have had kinder words for him, but Lena never claimed to be a hero.
Zor El stares at her, his daughter clung over her shoulders, as though he can't quite trust his own eyes. He probably doesn't. But after a long moment he pushes to his feet.
"Kara never gave up hope," he says. "She told me her friends would never stop looking for her. I thought it wouldn't matter-- no one has ever broken into the phantom zone before. I should have known better than to have doubted her."
He lifts his chin, for a moment looking like the lord he used to be.
"Thank you, Lena Luthor, for proving my daughter right."
He steps through the portal before them. Lena follows, bracing herself for the world that awaits them.
She collapses under earth's gravity the moment she steps through. The light is too bright, the sound too great after what feels like years in the phantom zone. Someone peels Kara's weight from her shoulders and someone else rolls Lena over, retracting the Lexosuit's faceplate to check her pulse.
"She's alive!" Brainy calls.
"So is Zor el!"
And then, finally-- "Kara's alive! Get the sunlamps, now!"
----
She's only been gone a week. Lena can hardly fathom it. She feels the weight of her years in the Phantom Zone in her bones, and she wears the proof of it in the grey stripe thats appeared in her hair. She can only imagine how Kara will feel.
When she wakes up.
Lena is grateful for her state of unemployment if only in that it allows her ample time to sit at Kara's bedside. Alex's examination confirmed Kara hasn't been scratched by a phantom, but beyond that they can only speculate what keeps her unconscious. Perhaps, Zor El speculates, Kara has been drawn too deep into her nightmares.
Lena decides she doesn't like him much.
She and Alex take shifts keeping Kara company, firm in their certainty that Supergirl won't wake up alone.
It's a fluke of nature that Lena is there when Kara finally stirs. Lena bolts upright from her half-doze (she hasn't fully slept since returning from the Phantom Zone, like her body no longer remembers how to after years without it), and leans in to clasp Kara's hand tightly.
Kara blinks up at her, and though her gaze is bleary, the recognition in them is stark and immediate as Kara takes in Lena's appearance. Without speaking, Kara lifts her fingers to the grey stripe of Lena's hair, and soon the puzzle clicks together.
"You found me," Kara whispers. "You saved me."
Lena smiles, her vision blurring with tears that soon drip to her cheeks when she blinks.
"About time I returned the favor."
"My father--"
"Resting. He's safe. You're both safe."
Kara looks at her, and her eyes fill with tears of her own. "You were in the Phantom Zone..."
Her guilt is plain-- she knows its agony, its emptiness, and never wanted anyone else to experience it, even to save her. Lena grips her hand tighter, leaning in until Kara can look nowhere else but Lena's eyes.
"I would go to a thousand phantom zones to find you." Lena wills her to understand that the ache of Kara's absence was far worse than anything the Phantom Zone could throw at her. "You and I have unfinished business, don't we?"
Kara chokes a laugh at Lena's small grin.
"Do we?"
Lena understands. After the Phantom Zone, their fight feels eons ago. But so does their friendship, and all that it had meant.
Lena sighs, pressing a kiss to Kara's fingers. If Kara is surprised by the gesture, she doesn't show it.
"Hi," Lena says softly. "I'm Lena."
Kara nods, understanding as only she could.
"Kara," she introduces herself anew. "Can... can we be friends?"
"Yes," Lena returns immediately, without even a moment's doubt.
"I'd like that very much."

For prompts: Kara and Lena holding hands for the first time. One of them tentatively reaching our, their fingers brushing until they are intertwined and the other gives a small affirming squeeze.
A/N: Okay so when I first saw this prompt I missed the first time part. So therefore enjoy this angsty hurt/comfort mess filled with love that I think is becoming my signature genre.
Stretch. Dig in. Pull.
Stretch. Dig in. Pull.
Lenaâs entire body was in agony. Complete and total agony.Â
Her legs were probably broken as well as a few ribs. Her right arm was numb and immobile which probably should have been the most concerning but at this stage Lena was just grateful that there was one part of her body that wasnât pure pain.Â
Stretch. Dig in. Pull.
Stretch. Dig in. Pull.
Two-hundred and fifty metres. A mile. A hundred miles. It might as well have been the distance to the moon and back.
Lena wasnât even sure that she had managed to cover more than a couple of metres with how she was dragging herself forward mere inches at a time with her one good arm.Â
She stretched out her left arm into the cracked and broken earth, digging her forearm in with the minimal strength she could muster (her teeth gritted and jaw clenched the whole time) before pulling her broken body forward.
Stretch. Dig in. Pull.
Stretch. Dig in. Pull.
It didnât matter that she was making minimal progress, it didnât matter that the pain was so intense she was close to blacking out every time she dragged herself forward. It didnât matter because all she could see was the crumpled blue and red heap at the centre of the battlefield.Â
All she could see was Kara and there wasnât a force on this - or any other - planet that could stop Lena from reaching her.
Alex would be coming for them, Lena didnât doubt that, would be racing through the ruins of National City to get to her sister but that did nothing to ease the unbearable fear that Karaâs immobile body evoked. Lena couldnât just lie there not when Kara was in sight.Â
An alien invasion of epic proportions had required a full scale evacuation of the city and, unfortunately, this time there was no lead weakness that they could exploit. It was their weapons versus Earthâs weapons which came in the form of two powerful kryptonians.Â
Kara was the heavy weapon, taking the brunt of the attacks to protect the citizens she cared for so deeply whilst firing back with heat vision that eviscerated their ships. Superman was on rescue operations pulling people from rubble and hurrying them along.
Lena had been working with the DEO, tweaking weapons and plans to beat the enemy, when she saw the sight of Kara bruised and bloodied on the screens. It was then Lena did what she had promised herself she would never do.
Had promised herself the second she had seen Lex power-crazy and at his cruelest that she would never follow in his footsteps.
Would never ever, ever put on Lexâs suit.
That version of her had never been in love.Â
That version of her had never seen Kara hurt.
That version of her had never wanted to inflict pain like she did in that moment.
She unlocked her most secure vault and unleashed the one weapon that made her physically sick to look at.Â
Lena had been in the air and joining the fight less than a minute later, appearing out of nowhere to shield Karaâs faltering body from a rocket.
Lena looked over her shoulder as her kinetic field absorbed the explosion, watching as Karaâs face morphed from shock to gratefulness to concern.Â
âLena, what-â Kara panted, unable to fully summon the energy to shout.
âYouâre not doing this alone!â Lena yelled back in return, green eyes desperate for Kara to understand.
âLenaâŠâ Kara cried, blue eyes distraught at Lena being involved, at Lena getting hurt but most importantly of her wearing the suit that she knew Lena despised to save her.
âTogether, Kara!â Lena shouted to break through the kryptonianâs mental spiral. âYou promised, Kara. You promised! Thereâs nothing we canât do together.â
Blue eyes slowly cleared to be replaced with sharp, determined focus.
Kara had made that promise to her everyday since they stopped Lex. Had made that promise to her whenever Lenaâs guilt created even a slither of physical distance between them. Had made that promise to Lena whenever there was an awkward moment or fumbled conversation. Had made that promise to Lena every gameâs night when she claimed Lena as her partner. Had made that promise to Lena whenever they came close to crossing the line of friendship that had been growing fuzzier and fuzzier with each movie night they had spent cuddled up in each otherâs arms.Â
âEl Mayarah.â Kara murmured clear and proud, jaw lifting up and a familiar righteous fire flickering in her eyes.
âUp, up and away?â Lena teased, priming her jets in readiness.
âUp, up and away.â Kara repeated, hand twitching by her side as if she was about to reach out for Lena so that they could soar up into the sky together.
***
It was the final ship that took them both down and created a crater that wiped out at least two streets.Â
Lena hit the ground first - though Kara followed less than a heartbeat later - the Lexsuit taking the brunt of the impact and saving her life but leaving her body wrecked. Crawling out of that hunk of twisted metal had been more traumatising than the terrifying plummet to Earth and knowing - because she could see Karaâs unconscious form falling nearby - that Supergirl would be unable to catch her.
Stretch. Dig in. Pull.
Stretch. Dig in. Pull.
The closer she got to her red and blue goal, the more her hope dwindled, the more her heart broke causing an ache that surpassed all of her physical injuries.Â
Kara was so still.
Kara, who Lena inextricably linked to activity, motion⊠life.
Kara, whose ever restless legs bounced through meetings and close games of chess.
Kara, whose fingers constantly sought to make contact with Lenaâs hand or to brush through Lenaâs hair.Â
Kara, who was ever quick to spring to her feet and sweep Lena into a hug.
She should not be still in this dead wasteland as Lena crawled towards her.
Lenaâs strength gave out a couple of feet away from Kara, her arm unable to pull herself forward. A scream of frustration and anguish ripped from Lenaâs throat at being denied the comfort of simply touching the person she loved so much in the world when she was so close.
Her fingers stretched and stretched, clawing at the blackened earth, Karaâs pale finger milimetres from reach.
StretchâŠÂ
StretchâŠÂ
StretchâŠÂ
Lena inhaled sharply as her fingers made fleeting contact, hope rekindling in her chest.
StretchâŠÂ
StretchâŠÂ
StretchâŠÂ
Lenaâs index and middle finger curled slowly around Karaâs index finger, intertwining them together with that single contact point.
âKaraâŠâ Lena breathed.
She was grateful for this connection. Grateful to be with Kara in any way possible but still finding it not to be enough.
She was greedy. Greedy for more. Greedy for everything.
So this could not be how it ended. She and Kara would not end here.
âKara.â Lena repeated urgently. âPlease, Kara.â
She squeezed Karaâs finger with all the strength she had left in her.
âNot like this.â Lena begged. âPlease, please donât leave me.â
The returning squeeze of her finger was so light, so tender that Lena could have easily imagined it except for how heartbreakingly familiar it was.Â
It was how Kara always touched her: soft and gentle.Â
It was all the affirmation Lena needed. She knew then that this wasnât the end of them. She knew then, as she slipped into a deep slumber awaiting the rescue that was undoubtedly coming, that everything would be okay.

pre-wedding post-bachelorette party juke, anyone?
BANG!
The sound of the front door smacking into the wall startled Luke out of the episode of Friends heâd been watching, and he blinked in bewilderment as he looked toward the entryway of the house he and Julie had moved into just last month.
Tonight was her bachelorette party, and Flynn had been totally adamant that all the party attendees would be sleeping over at her apartment after their night of festivities. So needless to say Luke was surprised when the door slammed open at nearly 2 am to reveal Alex and Flynn flanking either side of his fiancée.
And then she let out a heart wrenching sob.Â
Luke was off the couch in an instant, lunging straight over the coffee table in an effort to reach her as fast as possible. âBaby, whatâs wrong? Talk to me, please.â The words sounded shaky and frantic in his own ears as he finally got to her. Mind racing a million miles an hour, he found himself checking her over for any injuries but came up totally empty and held her cheeks in his hands instead.Â
Alex and Flynn let her go willingly, and Julie threw her arms around his neck so fast he nearly stumbled back into the wall with the force. Clutching her to him to keep them both upright, he turned his gaze to their friends for answers. Why was she crying?
Fear burned white hot through Lukeâs body. She didnât appear to be physically hurt, so what had happened that had her so distraught? Had someone else gotten hurt tonight? Had they run into somebody who said something cruel to her? Fuck, did they run into Carrie Wilson?
Why wasnât anybody saying anything?
Alex had finally opened his mouth to respond when Julieâs voice pierced through the static in Lukeâs brain. âI just love you so much. I canât wait to marry you.â
What? That was why she was crying?
Luke forced Julie back far enough that he could look at her face again. The mascara Flynn had put on her earlier tracked down her cheeks, her pretty brown eyes shimmering with further unshed tears. He tried his best to wipe the dark lines away with his own shaky fingers as he looked back to Alex and Flynn for further explanation.Â
At his obvious prompting, Flynn rolled her eyes. âShe insisted she needed to come back home to you tonight. Said she couldnât go to sleep without you. We wouldâve called to warn you we were bringing her back but she was kind ofâŠa handful.â Her eyes flicked back toward Julie between them, still clutching to Luke and petting a little clumsily at the messy waves on the nape of his neck.Â
Alex nodded vigorously in confirmation. âWe didnât even make it back to Flynnâs with her. She started saying she missed you at the club and then there was just no going back after that.â
And, yeah, that tracked. Drunk Julie had a tendency to be a little emotional, but that usually translated into little quips about how much she loved their family and a little extra affection to all her friends. Heâd never seen her cry quite like this before, but then they also didnât typically frequent going to the clubs without the other. Sheâd been so excited for this, though. A night out with Flynn and Alex and Willie and some of the friends sheâd made from their tour crew. When heâd kissed her goodbye earlier in the night she had willingly and excitedly accepted the overnight bag heâd laid across her shoulder.Â
Still, if Julie missed him and wanted to sleep in their bed together instead of on a big pallet at Flynnâs, he couldnât find it in himself to complain.Â
âThat true, Future Mrs. Patterson? You didnât want to go stay with your friends tonight? You know Iâll still be here in the morning.â Now that she was home and safe he really didnât want her going anywhere, but this was supposed to be her bachelorette party, after all. Flynn would want whatever Julie wanted, but he still had to make sure she hadnât changed her mind and wanted to return to a slumber party with their friends.
Julieâs head shake was emphatic. âNo, I just want to get married and never sleep apart ever.â A different thought crossed through her mind, and her eyes lit up with joy. âWill you make me some food first, though? Iâm so hungry.âÂ
Luke couldnât help but laugh at that. âYeah, I can make you something, boss. Donât you want to say goodnight to Flynn and Alex first, though?â
Julieâs eyes widened and she spun around so fast Luke was a little worried she might get dizzy from it. He held his arms out behind her at her little stumble, but then she was back at the doorway pulling both of their friends into a sloppy group hug. âThank you guys so much for tonight! I had the best time. Iâm sorry I got all weepy at the end. Please donât hate me. Thank you for bringing me home.âÂ
Alex started to rub comfortingly against her back until the white sequins of Julieâs jumpsuit scratched uncomfortably against his hand, and then he grimaced and patted her bare shoulder instead. âAnytime, Jules. You know that.âÂ
âWell, maybe not âanytimeâ,â Flynn interjected. âAfter all, weâre only planning on you getting married once.â She winked over Julieâs shoulder at Luke, and he laughed a little at the reminder that they were, in fact, getting married in just three more weeks. Three weeks, and then forever.Â
Julie pulled back from their hug, nodding enthusiastically as she planted a firm hand on either friendsâ shoulders. âThat is correct. Thank you for the best bachelorette party. I especially loved the Tarzan stripper. He will live in my dreams forever.âÂ
Luke squawked indignantly, but Alex and Flynn were back out the door before he could question it.
Ten minutes later they were perched together in the kitchen, Luke scrambling eggs in one pan and browning a single sausage in another while Julie sat next to him, feet kicking against the cabinets below as she babbled happily about the night sheâd had. She wasnât quite making sense in her stream of consciousness storytelling, so Luke made a mental note to ask her to retell it all tomorrow even as he hummed in agreement and laughed when it seemed she prompted it. Sheâd kicked her heels off the second theyâd shut the door behind Alex and Flynn, but the sequins on her jumpsuit still scattered tiny rainbows of light across the countertop and cabinets around them. She was a little disco ball right there in their kitchen, and Luke couldnât help but smile at that. Leave it to Julie Molina to light up any room.
â--and then Willie convinced Alex to do a body shot! Can you believe that? I saw our best friend do a whole body shot out of his husbandâs belly button.â Luke jumped lightly as Julie slapped a passionate hand down onto his shoulder.
Luke laughed. Heâd definitely have to run that part by Alex the next day. âI hope you got a video of that. Cheese, please.â
Julie dutifully handed over the bag of shredded cheddar, and Luke dropped a handful on top of the eggs.
âDo you think Flynn was upset that I wanted to come home tonight?â
Luke chanced a glance up from where he was mixing the cheese into the eggs to make sure it melted evenly to see that a troubled pout had taken over Julieâs features. He hadnât been super successful in wiping the remnants of mascara off her cheeks, and the black smudges made her look far more upset than she likely was. Heâd definitely have to help her wash her face before bed or sheâd yell at him in the morning over the state her white pillowcase was in.
âNah, Flynn loves you. She just wants you to be happy. You wanted to come home, so she brought you home.â He flicked the knobs to turn off the two burners before dishing the food out onto a plate. A fork was snatched from the silverware drawer, and Luke shut it with his hip before bringing the plate over next to Julie and stabbing a bite of eggs to hold out to her. âNow, I made you your most favorite eggs. No more pouting, no more crying. Yummy food and then bed.â
Julie dutifully took the bite offered to her and waited patiently for Luke to prepare another.
Little moments like these were the ones Luke adored. Julie, who always worked so hard to take care of everyone else, would very rarely let her guard down enough for him to return the favor. She always needed to be moving, to care for others, and Luke knew it was in large part to distract her from the grief of her mother. Especially lately, with their wedding so close, he could tell sheâd been feeling her motherâs absence more and more. So sheâd made herself busier than usual, throwing herself both into wedding planning and into anything else she could get her hands on (reorganizing the garageâeven though theyâd only just moved in!âand working in the studio and taking Reggie on day trips to DisneyLand) so extensively that Luke had grown more than a little concerned she was spreading herself too thin as of late.
So if he could do this for her, feed her eggs and turkey sausage at 2 am and guide her through her makeup removal and snuggle her in the warm comfort of their shared bed, then Luke would do that any day.
âI love you a lot, you know. I canât wait to be your wife.â Julieâs words came as a surprise while he focused on cutting off a bite-sized piece of sausage from the plate.
Luke smiled and pressed a soft kiss to her nose. âI know. I love you too, boss.â
And that he did.

Double edged scalpel ch. 7
Ch.1 ch.2 ch.3 ch.4 ch.5 ch.6
Summary: in which Cassandra gets bullied and other sappy shenanigans
---
"Oh Nicole dear, so happy to see you again!" Duke's voice was cheerful as ever, tone masterfully crafted over years of being a businessman.
Nicole, taking small steps inside the ornate and now full of items room, greeted him with uncharacteristic giddiness.
"Duke! How's business?"
"Same as always, I'll be heading to Beneviento later tonight to deliver some tools for her," he took a long drag of his cigar and, noticing green eyes scanning over multiple items and said, "I also have your order."
With a childish grin on her face, she approached him, hands shuffling inside the small bag attached to her belt that all staff members had. She pulled out the money owed for her package and, in return, the Duke placed a decently sized box in her arms. With an oof she shifted it in a less precarious position, it's heavy contents seeming to plot against her small frame.
"Unfortunately I can't stay, duty calls. But thank you Duke."
"No worries, I do understand that your employers can be quite," he took another drag of his cigar, looking for the right word. "...demanding"
Nicole chuckled. That was one way to put it.
"Well until next time dear. Or if you find yourself in need of something else, I'll be here until six."
---
She was only wearing a long white towel when she heard a knock on the door. Assuming it was another maid, or even Anita inquiring about whether or not she'd be joining the rest of them for dinner, she opened the door just a crack.
It was a surprise to see none other than Cassandra standing there, her elegant frame in odd contrast with the modest corridor. She flung the door open, letting the brunette inside and took a quick glance down the hall, making sure no maid was on the floor after fainting due to fright.
"What are you doing here?"
"Aw, are you not happy to see me?" She was pouting, but her tone was joking.
Nicole rolled her eyes, but the small smile on her lips betrayed that she was indeed happy to see her. Cassandra only laughed instead, a beautiful melodious laugh, so unlike the dark cackles heard by prisoners down in the dungeons.
"Just sit down, I need to get dressed," Nicole pointed to the bed before moving to the small dresser and pulling out a clean uniform.
Cassandra went to sit on the slightly disheveled bed, eyes following the redhead's form as she let the towel drop to her feet and started to put on the various layers of her uniform. Then golden eyes darted to the box sitting on the bed. The tape sealing it had been cut not long after Nicole brought it back to her room to make sure all its contents made it safely. Not that she didn't trust the Duke, but postal service was postal service.
"What's this?" Cassandra inquired, trying to read the label but having no success as it had been scribbled over with a marker.
Nicole stilled for a moment, hands frozen on her white button up. She cleared her throat and shyly admitted:
"Actually that's for you. Do open it if you want."
Cassandra's eyes widened, a faint blush appearing on her cheeks. The gesture had really caught her off guard. She gingerly lifted the lid, inspecting it's contents for a moment and then hummed.
"And here I was thinking you like my hair. With how much you love to pull on it and all that."
Nicole, now fully clothed and sporting a deep blush, marched to her and plucked the two boxes of red hair dye from gloved hands. She placed them on her nightstand and, with her voice just slightly more high pitched, she turned to the brunette.
"Those are mine, I meant the rest of it." And, after a chuckle, "I mean have you seen my roots? They're horrible!"
Cassandra only gave her a deadpan look and, after a long moment, said: "I think your hair is beautiful."
She didn't wait for a reply, not that it would be anything more than a stammered mumble of course. Instead she chuckled and returned her attention to the box. She examined the rest of its contents and then gingerly lifted one of the few tomes inside. The cover was glossy and malleable, it's pages shiny and with a distinct typography smell to it. It was so unlike her other books, it's pristine white state making it feel extremely out of place in the castle. She glanced at Nicole inquisitively.
"I do appreciate the gift, don't misunderstand me, but surely you know there's a small bookshop's worth of medical books in this castle."
"With all due respect, from what I've seen most of them are at least somewhat outdated. Interesting, yes, but I thought you'd like to learn something more...modern." Then she pulled out another book. "This is the same one I used while studying forensic pathology. It would make teaching you some things easier. Uh⊠assuming you want that."
Nicole averted her gaze, suddenly unsure of the usefulness of her gift. Cassandra however grabbed her chin between two fingers and pulled her gaze back on her. She smiled, finding the shy demeanor beyond endearing.
"I'd love that."
A small smile appeared on thin lips and Nicole leaned in to kiss Cassandra. It was soft and short, but no less intimate than the deep kisses they shared so many times in Cassandra's bed.
They had to go anyway.
---
Let's go to the library, Cassandra said. It'll be empty, she said.
When Cassandra swung open the intricate door, only to find the other two sisters lounging on one of the couches, it's not like they could do a one eighty and leave the room. That would've been both impolite and highly suspicious.
Instead, Cassandra grabbed her arm protectively and led them to the reading spot farthest from the other two. They placed one of the textbooks on the small desk and Cassandra took out a notebook. This would've been a lot more fruitful with an actual body on hand, but there were still a couple days until the human flesh supply had to be replenished and Cassandra was beyond eager to start on some things. So, for now, they had to settle for theory alone.
It took all of five minutes for the other two sisters to make their way to their desk. Daniela had a giddy yet curious expression on her face, while Bela seemed as unreadable as ever, if not for a glint in her eyes that betrayed her interest.
"Whatcha dooooing?" Came Daniela's voice, who cocked her head not unlike a curious puppy would while looking at the book's contents.
"Working," Cassandra replied, a slight growl accompanying her words.
"Could've fooled me," Bela spoke from behind the youngest sister, eyeing the hand protectively placed on Nicole's waist.
Cassandra snapped her eyes at the blonde, looking ready to throw her notebook at her head but Bela ignored her sister's ire and addressed Nicole instead.
"What are you studying?"
"I uh- just some basic anatomy concepts. Thought it would be a good idea to start with the things that the older books in the castle don't cover."
Bela only hummed, grabbed an ornate chair nearby, and plopped herself at the desk, opposite from the pair. Daniela mimicked her sister, but instead chose to sit down right by Nicole on the small couch. It took more willpower than she would admit not to glue herself to Cassandra's side when Daniela's face came uncomfortably close so she could look over the book's diagrams. She stood still as a statue though. After a couple seconds of silence and Nicole trying to figure out what she was supposed to do, Daniela drew her head back, looking at her with what was possibly the most serious expression she had seen on the youngest sister.
"You do realize we're not going to hurt you right? How could we lay a finger on our dear sister's lover hmm?"
Nicole's breath caught in her throat. She wasn't sure if it was due to the word used to describe her or how Daniela apparently knew that she was utterly terrified of her. Cassandra sighed beside her and, seeming to at least partially read Nicole's thoughts, clarified:
"Your heartbeat."
Oh. Yeah. Yeah her heart was beating a million miles an hour. And apparently the other three vampiric occupants of the room were able to hear it loud and clear. It did very little to ease her mind.
"Please do calm down, it feels like someone is having drumming lessons. Bad ones," Bela complained, head resting in one of her hands like she was already bored.
"Then shove a sock in your ears," Cassandra snapped.
Bela simply leaned back in her seat and stretched her arms above her head. "And risk not hearing my beloved sisters sing along to some pop song?"
Cassandra shut her mouth, a blush now slowly spreading across her cheeks while Daniela burst out into laughter. Even Nicole couldn't help betraying the brunette and letting out a giggle.
"I didn't know you could sing."
"I can't."
"Au contraire dear Cassie! Should I remind you of the last time Dragostea din tei came on the radio? The pathos!" Daniela reached over Nicole's lap to lightly shake her sister's knee through her giggles.
Cassandra only let out a long groan, face now hidden in her palms. "I hate you both."
"Mhm, we love you too," came Bela's reply, accompanied by a chuckle.
Nicole couldn't keep a small laugh while she snaked her arm behind the brunette to show some form of support against the merciless assailants. Maybe not a complete betrayal.
The scene really had something deep within her heart aching beautifully. It reminded her of the countless times she and Alex would mercilessly tease each other, but still have each other's backs through thick and thin. And for this familiarity to come from people that any sane person would consider bloodthirsty monsters? Hell, maybe they should start considering her a monster too, for the only word she could use to describe them in that moment was endearing.
"So," Bela lightly clapped her gloved hands. "Now that your pulse isn't giving me a headache anymore, what are we doing?"
She had a confident smirk on her face, but her eyes betrayed curiosity. Same for Daniela and, although mixed with a hint of annoyance, Cassandra. She opened the book in front of her, one of general human anatomy, and decided that the digestive system would be a good enough starting point.
---
Their little impromptu lesson didn't last more than two hours. Two hours that proved to Nicole just how oddly human all three sisters can be. Of course she had gotten familiar with Cassandra, intimately so, but the other two still felt like two looming monsters hiding in the shadows. At least up until now.
Bela seemed oddly intrigued by Nicole's explanation, although unlike Cassandra, she seemed to view it more like a story than anything. Daniela seemed slightly more interested, asking questions here and there and even starting to giggle like a middle schooler when they got to the rectum section. That got an eye roll from the other two. Nicole just laughed, finally understanding Mrs Hawkins, her private biology teacher from before she was allowed to step foot in any public school.
After they were done, Bela simply stood up and bid them good night. Danila instead excitedly proposed the skeletal system for next time and picked up the books she abandoned earlier. Then, with a small tower of tomes she went through a door tucked at the very back of the room. Her study, Cassandra had pointed out as they made their way out of the library.
"I didn't know your sisters were interested in medicine too." Nicole kept her voice low, almost as if talking too loudly would disturb the shadowy hallways.
"More or less. Daniela likes it and has a bit of hands-on practice but she has her nose in romance novels more often than not. Bela finds it interesting but botany is what she really loves. That and classic lit." She added the last part with a grimace and Nicole had to wonder which author had offended her personally.
Before she could continue that train of thought though, her gaze moved to the windows, the cloudless sky beyond thick glass panels full of twinkling stars. Her mind kept going back to a few hours earlier and at what Daniela had said. Lover. Did Cassandra truly see her as one or was the youngest sister just being her over the top self. Did she see Cassandra this way? Nicole had not allowed herself to dwell on that up until now, the idea that the brunette saw her as more than an over glorified lab partner with whom she occasionally scratched an itch seemed almost laughable. But the small gestures of affection shown in ways Cassandra seemed to know best were undeniably there. And the familiar flutter in her chest at each of said gestures was also undeniably there.
"What's wrong?"
Cassandra's voice, accompanied by the slight echo through the empty hallway, snapped Nicole out of her thoughts.
"Oh um- nothing." She sounded as convincing as someone trying to sell you a fork while showing you a spoon.
And Cassandra didn't seem to buy it. She moved in front of the redhead, walking backwards with no concern over possible furniture to collide into along the way.
"You always get this⊠face when something's bothering you."
"I do not-" the indignation in her tone was weak, little more than an attempt to change the subject.
"Mhmm you do. You normally look focused. Kind of like, if someone tried to scare you by throwing an eyeball at you, you'd laugh." She would. "Now? Now you look like a rabbit that has no time to run and is just laying low hoping whatever's hunting it passes by."
Nicole shut up for a moment, only looking at the brunette in front of her incredulously. Maybe she was far more attentive than she gave her credit for.
"Uh. Just thinking." At a raised dark eyebrow, the no shit went unsaid, so Nicole tried to elaborate. "About earlier. When we were with your sisters and Daniela uh- Daniela called me your lover."
Saying that the words felt awkward on her tongue was close to the year's biggest understatement. It felt like pulling out teeth would be an easier task. Nicole had never been good with her words, having learned since childhood to keep her mouth shut. But the fact that Cassandra seemed to share her struggle brought some semblance of comfort.
"And?" As if they were talking about the weather.
"And⊠was she right in describing me as such?"
She couldn't help a small gulp when the brunette stopped walking, looking at her with a frown. Any sane person would be at the very least somewhat afraid in this situation. Sanity however was scarce these days as Nicole was afraid, though not of the bodily harm that may come from her inquiry, but rather of Cassandra's answer.
"Nicole, your tongue has been in my mouth." Amongst many other places.
The redhead's cheeks turned a slight shade of crimson and she mumbled for an answer. She wasn't sure how to tell her that sleeping together did not automatically make them lovers. But then again, Cassandra's thoughts remained a mystery more than anything.
Thankfully the brunette took the metaphorical reins of the conversation and stepped forward. She wrapped her hands around Nicole's arms, gentler than one would imagine possible from her, and bent down to whisper no more than an inch away from her ear.
"I'll have you know, I'm not particularly fond of letting anyone I don't deem important touch me. Especially not the way you do."
The words made something flutter in Nicole's chest, an unfamiliar and comforting warmth. Said warmth got chipped away at the slightest bit when Cassandra pulled back to look her in the eyes.
"Should I take it that it's not mutual then?" Cassandra's tone was nonchalant, almost as if she didn't truly care about the answer. She could keep doing whatever she wanted either way, afterall who was going to stop her? But to someone who got familiar with all her small quirks and habits, the waver in her voice was more than clear.
"No." The world slipped from her lips with no hesitation.
No hesitation, because the more she thought about it, and she didn't need to think a lot mind you, the more Nicole realized that she couldn't remember a time when she felt the way she did here. Sure the initial threat of death looming over her head was anything but pleasant, but once that melted into affection and nights spent in Cassandra's arms the thought of leaving didn't as much as graze her mind.
"No, no. It is," she repeated, more certainty making its way into her tone.
At that Cassandra smiled. A small, almost shy one would say if they knew her well enough, smile. Her shoulders seemed to lose some of their tension when she leaned down again, her lips stopping not even an inch away. Nicole wasted no time leaning forward, their mouths meeting in a kiss that mixed softness and need beautifully. Their lips slid against each other until, surprisingly, it was Cassandra to pull back and sigh.
"Come sleep, we have some cutting up to do in the morning."
Nicole frowned. "Tomorrow? Wasn't that supposed to be due in a few days?"
A devilish grin appeared on black lips, fangs shimmering ominously in the low light. "Bela caught a foolish man-thing sneaking around the forest on the castle grounds. She's really excited to turn this one into a nice steak."
The redhead only let out an oh in acknowledgement. Foolish indeed. At least they could finally put into practice a few autopsy tricks Nicole had been itching to show her.
She let herself be guided back to Cassandra's chambers and into her bed, that she had grown intimately familiar with. The last thing she felt before falling asleep was the brunette's cool skin, pressed against her own. A welcomed comfort among the myriad of soft pillows that surrounded them. Nicole wondered briefly if being undead meant it was hard to keep yourself warm, but the thought quickly slipped away as she fell into a dreamless sleep.

December 1994
Luke groaned as he woke up, squinting hard to try and adjust his eyes to the amount of light in the room.
Even before he could see clearly, he knew he must've fallen asleep in the studio judging by the soreness in his back and neck that he always got when he slept on the old couch. It couldn't have been more than six in the morning, and Luke could still feel the tiredness in his bones. So he tried to turn away from the light and hopefully fall back asleep, but there was something keeping him firmly in place.
His heart skipped when he looked down and saw that you were laying right next to him with your head on his chest and an arm thrown across his stomach. When he realized that his own arms were wrapped around you, his heart broke out into a full-on tap dance.
Waves of confusion ran through his still-foggy brain until he saw his guitar case propped up against the piano and his backpack on the floor with his clothes spilling out of it.
Then the events of last night quickly came back to him.
How he had gotten home late from rehearsal and his mom was waiting in the kitchen with his latest report card and her signature lecture at the ready. One minute he was standing there yelling, packing all he could fit into his bag, and the next, he was halfway to the studio with the rain soaking him head to toe.
He had expected it to be empty when he finally got there, but he was flooded with relief when he saw you. All the frustration slowly melted out of him the longer he laid there with you, leaving him feeling exhausted and shivering despite how warm he felt.
The last thing he wanted to do was talk about any of it, but when you asked, the words came out of his mouth before he could stop them.
He remembered rambling and crying again, the sound of your voice and the feeling of your fingers in his hair warming him up even more. Then finally, he remembered falling asleep with his chin tucked on top of your head, the smell of your shampoo filling his senses.
Without thinking, Luke reached down and carefully pushed a piece of hair away from your face, tucking it behind your ear and smiling to himself when you shifted into his touch. Then taking in a sharp breath as the realization ran through him all the way down to his toes.
You were his best friend.
The person he wanted to see at the end of a long day. Whenever he was full of anger or lost in confusion, all he had to do was look at you and everything suddenly made sense again. With your pretty smile and laugh, and your way of flipping that little switch inside him that made his head all fuzzy and the ground start spinning under his feet.
You were his best friend, and he was in love with you.
-
2020
All you felt was a mixture of anxiety and nausea as you stood on the Orpheum's street corner, biting the tips of your fingernails.
The entire plan hinged on Willie and Teddy getting everything done in time, and considering that they had betrayed you all before, you couldnât help but expect the worst.
âLook, donât worry. Willie said heâll get us on that marquee.â Alex said nervously as he kicked pebbles across the sidewalk.
âThis is going to work, right?â Reggie asked.
âIt has to.â Luke mumbled, wincing seconds later when another shock hit them.
Two sharp pops cut through the air behind you and you all whipped around to see Willie and Teddy standing just a few feet away. Willie was watching you all carefully with concern written all over his face, his eyes lingering on Alex longer than anyone else. Teddy stood at the edge of the group, practically burning a hole in your face with his guilty stare.
âAre you guys okay?â Willie asked.
âYeah, nothing we havenât felt before.â Alex laughed awkwardly. âHowâd it go?â
âWell, when the opening band wakes up, theyâll find their bus two hundred miles out of Vegas.â Willie said with a proud smile as he did a spin, showing off his stolen jacket with the bandâs name across the back.
âWith absolutely no chance of getting back in time.â Teddy added.
Luke gave Willie a fistbump and pointed up to the office above the Orpheum. âThat means thereâs probably a promoter up there freaking out right now.â
Willie grinned, sarcasm laced in his tone. âNah, man. This is Hollywood. Iâm sure heâs being very professional.â
You laughed and then Alex slowly inched forward, clearly struggling for the right words to say to Willie. You gave his arm a quick squeeze before following Reggie and Luke down the street to give them space. Before you even got halfway down the sidewalk, Teddy poofed next to you.
âYou know, If I didnât know any better, Iâd think you donât want to talk to me.â He joked.
âTeddy-â
"I just-I didn't want to leave things the way we did." He rambled. "I'm sorry, I should've told you everything that night in the diner-"
"Teddy, It's okay." You said. "You told me before Caleb could put the stamp on me, and you didn't know the details about the plan until after it was too late to help my friends. Plus, I know how much you're risking helping us now."
As soon as the words left your mouth, you felt some of the weight fall off your shoulders. You weren't sure why since the situation was still a little painful and awkward. But being around Teddy always made you feel a little like that kid who started working at the diner with Cece all those years ago. Besides, they were so alike that you found it hard to stay mad at him.
You held out your hand for Teddy to shake. "Despite everything, I'm glad we met."
âLikewise, Gorgeous,â Teddy said with a relieved smile as he grasped your hand. With a subtle wink, he nodded over towards where Luke was standing at the end of the street. âHeâs a lucky guy.â
"What? How did you?-" You sputtered as he stepped away. You never told Teddy about Luke, or at least you didn't think you did.
Teddy just smirked in response before disappearing into the air. At the same time, you saw Willie skate away out of the corner of your eye, leaving Alex alone on the sidewalk.
You all phased next to him and Luke squeezed his shoulder reassuringly. "You okay, man?"
"Yeah. I'm good." Alex smiled slyly as he gestured to the office. "Looks like this show needs a new opening act though."
You grinned. "Let's go see if we can help with that."
-
When you got back to the studio, you found Julie pacing back and forth in the middle of the room as she wrung her hands together.
When you all poofed in, she immediately jumped into a load of questions, losing her breath halfway through and flailing her arms around.
"Whoa, just sit down," You laughed excitedly. "We'll tell you everything."
Julie took a gasping breath and plopped backwards onto the couch then stared at you all with expectant eyes. "Well?"
"It worked!" You announced. "Everything's fine."
"You should be getting the call...now!" Alex pointed to Julieâs phone on the table just as it started buzzing. You all cheered and Julie shushed you as she answered the call.
You heard a woman's voice say something through the phone and Julie gave a thumbs-up as she started jumping on the couch. You watched in amusement and mild horror as Luke and Reggie lifted Alex up into the air and spun him around.
Once he was back on the ground, Luke and Reggie made a beeline for you, each of them grabbed one of your arms and flipped you upside down over their shoulders.
You all spent the next twenty minutes laughing and screaming and Alex even got a little teary-eyed but you pretended not to notice. Then Julie called Flynn and ran off excitedly to decide her outfit for the night, leaving the four of you alone to plan out the setlist.
âOkay, so Iâm thinking we start with Stand Tall.â Luke said excitedly as he wrote the words down in his songbook.
âSounds good.â Reggie said, suddenly quiet.
ââSounds goodâ? Guys, I wanna hear âThat sounds awesome!â Luke reached out and nudged Reggieâs shoulder. âI know this isnât the way we imagined any of this. But we need to be all in tonight. This is our second chance to play the Orpheum!â
âI get it.â Reggie sputtered. âBut itâs hard. Do we even know whatâs on the other side when we cross over? Do we still get to hang out together?â
You shifted your weight as the happy little bubble surrounding you popped. You had been so wrapped up in the excitement of finally playing the Orpheum that you almost forgot what tonight was really about.
âYou guys are the only family I have.â Reggieâs eyes were glued to the piano as he played with his fingers. You reached out and locked his arm with yours in an attempt to comfort him.
âI donât know whatâs gonna happen either. But itâs not like we have a choice.â Alex said.
Suddenly, Reggieâs arm fell out of yours as all three boys fell back, clutching their sides.
âIâm pretty sure we do.â Reggie groaned. âAnd it rhymes with âHollywood Ghost Clubâ.â
The garage doors creaked open and Julie appeared with a bright smile and a blue garment bag in her hand. When she saw your expressions, her smile fell. âWhatâs wrong?â
âWe just got hit pretty hard by one of those jolts.â Alex said. âBut weâre fine.â
âOh, good.â She nodded, though she still looked on edge. âIâm nervous.â
âThat makes two of us.â You said. âBut we made it this far for a reason. We got this.â
âCan you ride there with me? I'm gonna need more pep-talk material for the drive there cause I still think I might puke.â Julie tucked her hair behind her ears.
âOf course, and don't worry, weâll leave the windows open.â You joked, making everyone laugh.
The sound of a car horn cut through the air and Julie looked outside. "That's my dad. Are you ready, (Y/n)?"
You nodded. "Yeah, uh, give me a second. I'll meet you in the car."
As Julie disappeared behind the doors, you turned to the boys and sighed as you tried to soak up this moment. For all you knew, this could be the last little window of time you had alone with them before tonight.
Julie was a huge part of the band of course, but these were your boys. The ones who you started this all with, who had been by your side for everything.
From the look on all their faces, you could see that they were thinking the same thing.
Without saying a word, you launched yourself at Alex. He made a surprised noise but recovered quickly, throwing his arms around you and holding you tight.
"And I'm the emotional one?" He jokingly muttered in your ear and you pinched his side, making him jump back. "Rude."
As soon as your arms were open, Reggie stepped forward and hugged you so tightly that you were thankful to not need oxygen anymore because he was definitely crushing several vital organs.
You laughed and gave him one last squeeze before pulling away, locking eyes with Luke instantly.
Alex cleared his throat awkwardly and grabbed Reggie's shoulder, steering him over to Luke's songbook to 'check out the setlist again'.
"And then there were two." Luke joked.
You laughed and stepped into his waiting arms, making him laugh. You soaked up the feeling of comfort and familiarity for a minute before pulling away.
"This, uh, is for you," Luke said as he reached into his pocket and pulled out a folded piece of paper. You knitted your eyebrows together in confusion as he handed it over. "I wanted you to have it in case...well, you know. If tonight doesn't work."
"It will." You said, trying to ignore the fact that it very well could happen. "You're not getting rid of me that easily, Patterson."
"I wouldn't dream of it." He quipped back, his voice sounding softer and less teasing than you would've expected. You pulled back from him and because you didn't know if you would ever get another chance, you stood on your tiptoes and planted a kiss on his cheek.
You moved away too fast to see his reaction but the gesture made the other two boys smirk at you as you dashed out of the doors, making a beeline for the car pulling out of the driveway.
-
The back rooms of the Orpheum were a maze.
You had left for a few minutes to walk around the venue and clear your head, trying to wring out the last of your nerves.
By the time you found your way back, you expected to find the rest of the band rushing to get ready in the dressing room. But all you saw was Julie anxiously pacing as she had been earlier, a habit she seemed to have inherited from both you and Alex.
âYou okay?â
She snapped her head up towards you and sighed. âYeah, just a little worried. The guys arenât here yet.â
You looked around the room and then at the clock, frowning. The show was in less than half an hour and that was already cutting it close. Part of you wanted to go check on them but Julie seemed to need you more at the moment.
âOkay, well, give them another ten minutes. I'm sure they'll be here. They wouldnât miss thisâŠagain.â
You ran your palm across the front of your pocket, feeling Luke's note next to your parentâs photo, and hoped you were right.
But then more and more time passed until the stage manager came to escort Julie to the stage.
"Just a second!" She calls out and then turns to you. "(Y/n), something's wrong. They were getting those jolts pretty hard before we left. They must've run out of time."
You shut your eyes tight as the words sunk in. All you could bring yourself now was, âThis isn't what was supposed to happen.â
The world fell out from under your feet and you had trouble even standing up straight as you imagined what must've happened to them. Your best friends, your brothers, your family was gone and there wasn't anything you could do about it.
The guy knocked again, this time a little harder and with a nervous tone. Julie chewed her lip as she looked between you and the door and you could almost see the cloud of grief settling over her.
As hard as it was, you tried your best to shove your feelings down and marched up to Julie. There would be time to fall apart later, but you knew that this what they would want you to do. "Let's go do this for them, okay?"
She took a deep, shaky breath before hesitantly nodding. You followed closely behind her as she walked out the door though the halls until she reached the stage. You waited beside Flynn in the wing as Julie settled behind her microphone and addressed the crowd.
There were scattered claps from around the venue and then she took a deep breath before singing the opening.
After the first few lines, you took your cue and materialized at the center of the stage. The crowd gasped and cheered the way they always did, but you kept your eyes shut tight and focused on the music.
Just as the song started picking up, you heard a familiar pop in the air and then the sound of drumming. You whirled around to see Alex mounted onto a drum set at the back of the stage, twirling his drumsticks around and smiling like he had never been gone at all.
Once you got over the initial shock, you wanted to cry with relief. They were okay, they were here. Alex winked at you goofily, and you ran towards Julieâs keyboard.
She had started bouncing on the balls of her feet, both of you finally getting into the song now that they were coming back. You followed suit, dancing around the base of the drum set as yours and Julieâs voices came together.
Then Reggie appeared on the other side of Julie and you ran to his side. You bumped his shoulder with yours and he grinned, moving to stand back to back.
The song was ramping up to the chorus when a staticky noise cut through the air, not loud enough for the crowd to hear but enough to make you all look over to the other end of the stage.
You could see Luke's form fading in and out, a look of anguish on his face, and the pit in your stomach opened up again. The crowd was on the edge of their seats as Alex's drumming paused and Luke finally materialized to sing the opening of the chorus.
You didn't even know you were moving until you suddenly found yourself across the stage next to Luke, unable to stop smiling as you sang.
Julie joined you, throwing her arms up in the air happily and jumping around. Reggie appeared by her side, flashing the crowd a winning smile.
Alex stood up and gripped his mic as he sang this solo. You looked back at him and flashed him a proud smile, then whooping loudly when Reggie sang his lines.
You all went down the line hitting your notes until the chorus kicked in again and your heart felt so full you almost couldn't stand it. This was what you were so close to achieving before you died, it was all you had wanted for years, and you knew that if you hadn't died, that night would've changed your life. But this night was something even more special. Because you were all here, all together.
Even if it was just for one last song.
Julie caught your attention and nodded towards the platform that spread out into the crowd. You followed her to the center and stood back to back as everyone cheered.
The guys joined in on either side of you, Alex grabbing one of your hands and Luke holding the other. You all bowed to the audience before taking your cue and vanishing, leaving only Julie on stage.
You landed in the wing, feeling a little lightheaded and overwhelmed from all the emotions you had experienced in the last five minutes. The elated smile fading from your face when all three boys poofed by your side only to fall to the floor instantly.
âIt didnât work.â You said miserably as Julie emerged into the backstage area. She grabbed Flynn and whispered something to her, pointing in the direction of her family. Flynn nodded and disappeared into the crowd while Julie ran to your side.
You hauled Alex onto his feet, letting him lean on you to stay upright while Luke and Reggie trailed behind Julie as she led the group back to the dressing room. Once everyone was inside, they collapsed on the couch or the floor, loudly groaning in pain.
âWhat happened? Why didnât it work?â Julie asked tearfully.
âI guess playing here wasnât our unfinished business.â Alex said hollowly.
âPoint Caleb.â Reggie muttered as he clung to the side of an armchair.
You stood frozen next to Julie as panic spread through your whole body, both of you flinching in sympathy as the shocks continued.
âYou have to save yourselves right now.â Julie begged. âJoin Calebâs club. Itâs better than not existing at all!â
âSheâs right.â You managed to say, your voice shaky and almost giving out. Your stomach flipped at the thought of them having to work for an evil club owner forever, but the alternative was worse. âYou guys need to go now! For me. For us.â
âWeâre not going back there.â Reggie shook his head.
Luke pulled himself up and stumbled forward a little so that he was right in front of you. âNo music is worth making if weâre not all making it together.â
You sighed sadly, thinking back to your conversation yesterday. âSo no more regrets?â
Luke let out a deep sigh and then reached up and cupped your cheek with his right hand. âJust one.â
You furrowed your eyebrows in response and Luke blinked hard as if he was trying to find the words. "I never told you why I left that night."
"Luke, don't." You gave him a weak smile. "I get it."
"You do?" He asked.
You struggled to get the words out. "Yeah, I mean it was bound to happen eventually. We just got too close and it was weird for you. I understand t-â
"What?" Luke asked, cutting you off with a confused look. "No, no, that's not it at all. Read the-"
Before he could finish, you heard Julie gasp loudly from a few feet away. You looked over to see her stepping back from Alex with an awestruck look on her face as she gripped his forearms.
Wait, what?
Before you could even begin to process what you were seeing, Reggie was reaching out to Julie, who grabbed his wrist and hauled him up to his feet. The three of them stared at each other for a few seconds before Julie turned to you and Luke.
âGuys, come here.â
Alex reached out and pulled you into his side while Luke threw an arm around Reggieâs back and Julie brought you all in closer to her. At first, nothing happened. But then there was a faint buzzing sound and the boys lifted their wrist towards the ceiling and you all watched in awe as the stamp floated away in the blink of an eye.
âWhoa.â Reggie said, his eyes still glued to the ceiling. âI donât feel as weak anymore.â
âYeah, me neither.â Alex agreed. âNot that I ever was that weak in the first place.â
You rolled your eyes and let your head fall over on his shoulder. âWhat do you think that means?â
Luke smiled. âI think it means the band is back.â
It was quiet for a second before Alex looked at you all shyly. âYou guys think we can try that hug thing again?â
You laughed as you huddled together again, sniffling and laughing. Then Julie yelled out that you had played the Orpheum and then you were all jumping around, still tangled in each otherâs arms.
Eventually, you all broke apart and while the boys started chasing each other around, you turned to Julie. She looked into your eyes and immediately flew into your arms, muttering into your shoulder, âI always wanted a big sister.â
The words warmed your heart and you squeezed her extra hard, grateful that you actually could now. âWell, Iâm honored.â
âMy family's probably looking for me so..." Julie stepped back from your arms with the biggest smile youâd ever seen on her face, you jokingly bowed to her and she copied the gesture before disappearing behind the door.
You wiped the last of your tears out of your eyes and turned around to find Alex and Reggie were talking in whispers and wearing knowing smiles. When Alex saw you looking, he cleared his throat and nudged Reggieâs shoulder.
âHey, Reg.â Alex said cheekily, not taking his eyes off of you for even a second. âI was going to check out the next band. You wanna come with me?â
âSure!â Reggie started strolling towards the door, stopping only for a second to nudge your shoulder and whisper âdon't do anything I wouldnât doâ in your ear.
Alex fixed Luke with a pointed look over his shoulder and Reggie gave him a dorky wink before they poofed away. You smiled fondly at the space where they were just standing and awkwardly turned towards Luke.
âHi.â You said, laughing awkwardly.
âHi.â Luke muttered back as he stepped forward until he was close enough to grab your hand. âAbout what I was saying earlierâŠâ
You opened your mouth to say something but he shook his head and pointed to your pocket. âRead it. Please.â
You tugged the note he had given you earlier out of your pocket and carefully folded it open to see that it wasnât a note at all. It was the love song that Julie had found that day in the garage, the one that he didnât want anyone to see. You struggled a little trying to decipher Luke's handwriting. The ink was a little smudged and the song was clearly unfinished but it was the most beautiful thing you had ever read. And he had written it for you.
"I didn't leave because we got too close," He said. "It was the opposite, (Y/n), I left because I was scared to lose you, and I know that doesn't make sense because I kind of did w-"
You carefully tucked the paper back in your pocket with one hand and grabbed the back of his neck with the other, pulling him down and closing the last bit of space between you.
Luke's brain short-circuited for a second before he started kissing back, grabbing your waist with enough force to nearly knock you both backwards. It was dizzying and a little desperate, yet weirdly familiar, as if you'd been kissing him your whole life.
Most moments with Luke felt like they were happening in slow motion, but this time it was like a high-speed movie montage of your whole lives. The stolen crayons, the time capsule, the pre performance pep talks, the smell of cinnamon, the ferris wheel, his jacket, the movie nights and songwriting sessions. All of it had led up to this moment.
"I love you." Luke said immediately after you pulled away. "God, I love you so much. I'm such an idiot. I'm sorry."
âHey, itâs okay.â You laughed, blinking another wave of tears out of your eyes. âI shouldâve told you forever ago instead of skirting around it.â
âAnd what is it that you shouldâve told me?â He said teasingly and you rolled your eyes. You had gotten so used to Luke being so shut down or nervous around you that you almost forgot how much of a little shit he could be.
âThat I love you too.â You said, unable to stop smiling.
Luke leaned down and captured your lips in another kiss, this time threading his fingers through your hair as he cupped your cheeks in his hands. âIâm never gonna get tired of hearing that.â
You bit your lip to keep another laugh from bubbling up as you looked up at him, feeling completely overwhelmed in the best way possible. "So...what now?"
"I don't know." Luke admitted. "But I know one thing."
"What's that?"
"That no matter where we go, or what we do," He pushed a piece of hair behind your ear. "In life, in death... I'm yours. Always."

make everything alright, if only for tonight
summary: âI havenât felt safe with a man in so long,â she breathed, eyes looking down at where her hands were fidgeting with his fingers. âI feel safe with you. And Iâm⊠nervous to mess it up. Iâm scared Iâm going to mess us up.â
He pressed his lips gently to forehead and she sighed, the tension escaping her at the tender gesture of affection. The affection that she found so rare from others, yet an affection that seemed to come so easily to him in regards to her.
âNothing you do could ever mess us up.â
âBut what if-â
âShh,â his lips find hers, the kiss so soft and tender, nothing like the sloppy, wet and rushed kisses they shared only moments ago. âI mean it. Nothing. Okay?â
Norma and Alex share an intimate night together
NSFW

Norma felt devastatingly anxious as she rapidly flicked the light switch, waiting for the brightness to flood the darkness of the room, sighing deeply as nothing happened. She glanced uneasily around the basement, trying to find the flashlight that she knew she had somewhere. Norma was not particularly scared of the dark, but Norman was gone now, and she was alone in the large house. Alex had called her earlier, awkwardly reassuring her that heâd be home late and to go on and have dinner without him, and it was nearing ten pm now, and there had been no word from him since.
She contemplated calling him, but quickly shoved the idea from her brain the moment it appeared. He had done enough for her in these past few days, escorting Norman to Pineview and marrying her a day later so she had insurance to keep him there. She was not about to ask more favors from him, especially one to come home from work so she wouldnât be afraid. They were married, yes, but not like that.
Her shaky hands flick the flashlight on, sweeping around the dark basement as she made her way back towards the stairs. She couldnât bear to be in the basement much anymore, the memory of her son pointing a gun at her only a few nights ago, was still fresh in her mind, and though he was safely away and getting treatment, she couldnât help the unease. The whole house seemed so empty and much too full all at once, and she couldnât escape the crushing loneliness or extreme unease at all of it.
Norma shut the basement door, fingers gripping the knob tightly as she released a soft sigh into the darkness. Damn it Alex, where are you? The sudden creak of the front door startled her, and she turned, meeting Alexâs equally startled expression.
âJeez Norma.â
âYouâre home,â she couldnât keep the relief out of her voice, or the small smile from appearing on her face, feeling suddenly so much safer with his presence in the darkness of the house.
âItâs late, why are you up?â
And just like that, the smile was gone as soon as it had appeared, defenses on the rise as she glared haughtily at him. âBecause I can be, is that an issue for you?â
âWhat? No, I just-â she glanced down at the bottle in his hand. â- wanted to make sure you were okay, thatâs it-â
âIs that whiskey?â
He looked down at the bottle, as if he just remembered he was carrying it, shrugging somewhat guiltily. âEr⊠yeah sorta,â he mumbled.
âI have whiskey here, Alex, why didnât you just drink that?â
âThatâs⊠thatâs yours, I just thought-â
She rolled her eyes dramatically, snatching the bottle from his hand and reading the label. âJesus Alex, you live here,â she made a small noise of disgust as she shoved it back into his hand. âThis kind sucks too. Come on, Iâll get you some of the good stuff.â
She was flurrying off into the kitchen before he could protest, and for a moment, he contemplated just going up the stairs and to his room. It had been a long day, much longer thanks to the drunk asshole who decided to drive at eighty five miles before slamming into an electric pole, causing a power outage for half the town. He decided against it when her voice called out to him from the kitchen, not wanting to hurt her feelings, nor make her upset.
He stopped in the doorway, watching uselessly as she stretched up on her tiptoes and blindly grabbed at the array of glassware that lined her top shelves, unable to help the wandering of his eyes over her legs as the skirt of her dress rose higher at her actions. He quickly averted his gaze the minute she was back down on steady feet, glasses in hand.
âSorry itâs so dark,â she said, haphazardly waving one of the cups around. âThese were all the candles I had. Do you have any idea what happened to the power? I checked the breaker but itâs not that.â
âYeah, some guy hit a pole. Power should be back up in a few hours.â
âWhat an asshole.â
He chuckled. âYeah.â
She slid a glass over to him, before taking a seat at the table, looking up at him expectantly, waiting for him to sit across from her. It was late, much too late to be having a glass of whiskey and awkwardly chatting with his new wife, but he sat down anyway.
âWas he drinking?â she asked, and it took a moment for Alex to realize that she was still talking of the driver he mentioned, before nodding. âDid he die?â
Alex spluttered out an anxious laugh. âJesus, no. Heâs alive. Heâs in the hospital now, heâll likely have a concussion, but besides that and a hefty jail time, heâll be okay.â
She nodded, and silence fell over them once more, the lack of noise feeling heavy and uncomfortable, mostly because Alex and Norma didnât do this. They didnât have quiet moments together; their experiences with one another were always a confrontation, a clash of interests. And now they were married, and sitting in her dark kitchen, all alone in her house.
He prepared to excuse himself up to his room, knocking back the whiskey in his glass like a shot, when she spoke again. âI called Pineview, but they still wonât let me visit. They wonât even tell me anything at all!â
âIâm sure heâs okay, Norma. You can go see him tomorrow, canât you?â
âYeah,â she sighed. âI just wish they couldâve told me something. I mean, Iâve been a mess over it, over him, and I justâŠIâm his mother! They should tell me, right? Iâm his guardian! He lives with me, I take care of him.â
âHeâs eighteen,â Alex shrugged, and she sighed dramatically. âHeâs an adult.â
âYeah, thatâs what they said,â she muttered, clearly annoyed that Alex had no way to fix her small dilemma, and he almost wanted to laugh at the idea that Norma was hoping for a different answer, hoping that Pineviewâs withholding of information about her son was somehow illegal, and that there was a way for Alex to fix it. Itâs so characteristically Norma, turning to Alex for help when she doesnât receive the answer she wants elsewhere.
âNormanâs a reasonable kid. Iâm sure heâs adjusting well,â he said, hoping his words offered her some sort of comfort. If they did or didnât, she didnât let it show, pouring more whiskey into both of their glasses as soon as hers finished.
âWeâve never been apart for so long before,â she muttered sadly, fingers dancing ever so lightly along the rim of the glass. âWhen he was little, he used to get so sad when he had to go to school. He always said he missed me too much. And now heâs going to be gone for god knows how long, and I donât know if I can-â
âNorma,â he reached across the table, his hand curling around hers before he could stop himself, effectively cutting her off. âYouâre doing the right thing.â
She let out a soft, shaky breath. âI hope so.â
He made to take his hand back, feeling like he was slightly overstepping with the soft amount of contact, but she stopped him, turning her hand over and wrapping her fingers around his. He looked up at her, taking in her wide, teary eyes and trembling bottom lip.
âI donât want to be alone,â she breathed. âWill you stay up with me? Just for a little bit?â
He should say no. He had work in the morning, and it was already later than he was used to, but he knew he wouldnât be able to deny her. Not when she was looking at him so sadly, holding his hand so tightly. Not when she was feeling so lonely without her son in a house so big and empty.
âSure, Norma.â
She brightened for just a moment, before standing abruptly and gathering their glasses and her newly opened bottle of whiskey into her hands, heading towards the living room, clearly expecting Alex to follow.
âI would say we could watch a movie butâŠâ she sighed, setting the things on the coffee table and flopping back onto the couch.
âNo power,â he said and she nodded.
âNo power.â
He sat on the armchair by the couch, keeping himself away and out of her space in case she became uncomfortable. He couldnât imagine that it was easy having another man in the house, one she didnât know very well. Sure, they were acquaintances, and had helped each other out before, but they didnât know much about one another.
âWe could talk,â she offered, before instantly crinkling her nose. âWe aren't very good at talking.â
âWe arenât," he laughed.
She smiled softly, deciding to busy herself with slowly filling each of their glasses fuller, despite them already being half filled.
âBut weâre married now,â she said, sliding the glass towards him, the liquid sloshing out and down the side. âWe need to practice.â
She was teasing him, keeping her tone light and giggly, even though she felt anything but light. Alex was tense, keeping his responses short and Norma felt a sinking in her stomach. She knew her and Alex werenât exactly friends, barely even acquaintances really, but still, she hoped to find comfort in him tonight, to talk and laugh like they had done this for years, and for her to just forget about where Norman was and what he was doing. And it didnât seem that Alex really felt like talking about much of anything.
Until, âAlright, then what do married people talk about?â
She smiled, biting down on her bottom lip to suppress it, relieved he was playing along. She thought for a moment. âTaxes.â
He huffed out a laugh. âTaxes?â
âYes,â she nodded. âYou know, if the taxes are too high.â
He rolled his eyes. âI donât think thatâs what married couples talk about.â
âPfft, Iâve been married twice, Alex. I know what married couples talk about.â Granted, Norma didnât talk much about taxes with neither John nor Sam. She was never involved in the financial interests, except for when she was in trouble for spending too much money.
âWell, Iâve been married, and we definitely didnât talk much about taxes.â
âOh my god. You were married?â
Alex laughed. âThe surprise in your tone hurts!â
âNo!â Norma giggled, sitting up and criss crossing her legs underneath her. âNo! I just⊠okay yeah. Iâm a little surprised⊠is it anyone I know?â
âGod no. It was forever ago.â Norma nodded, placing her chin in her hands, and he realized she was waiting for him to continue. He hadnât really talked about his marriage with anyone before, and felt suddenly nervous to share a part of his past with her. âWe were young, erm, it was when I was in the marines. She was the sister of one of my buddies. Met and married three weeks later, divorced six months after that-â
âAww no! What happened?â Norma pouted dramatically.
âWe just didnât work. It was a mistake in the first place,â he shrugged, before taking another drink of his much too full glass of whiskey. âWhat about you?â
âWhat about me?â
âWhat about your marriages?â
She sucked in a sharp breath. âOh⊠well. My high school boyfriend got me pregnant and we ran off and had Dylan, and when he was around two, I met Normanâs father, Sam. I⊠I thought I was in love, and we had an affair and... and Dylanâs father left me and I married him. He was⊠he was an asshole.â
Norma huffed out an anxious laugh, wringing her hands together nervously as she spoke about her previous marriages with a sort of nonchalance that wouldnât be expected when talking about an abusive relationship. If anything, Alex assumed heâd hear some sort of malice in her tone, assumed sheâd be rightfully angry over what was done to her back then, but heard nothing of the sort, instead an almost sad acceptance over the previous hardships of her life.
âIâm sorry,â Alex murmured, and she instantly shrugged, waving her hand as if it were no big deal.
âNo, itâs okay. Samâs dead and gone and he canât hurt me from beyond the grave.â
âBut he did before,â Alex said seriously, their eyes meeting, and Norma swallowed hard, cringing at the short flash of memories that disappeared before they could take any real hold. He did before.
âYeah, he⊠he hated me,â she trilled out a little fake laugh. âI must be a pain to be married to. So,â she held up her glass, âgood luck.â
It went silent again, and Norma found herself lost in thought, almost anxious over what she had revealed to Alex. He had no real way of knowing that Sam used to hurt her; he just assumed and she just confirmed, for no real reason other than that she felt she would have no judgment from him, and knew he wouldnât press for information if it became too much for her. Perhaps thatâs why she found herself suddenly wanting to tell him everything.
Can you imagine that?â she asked suddenly, sitting up straighter. âI mean⊠I mean I was married to the guy for twenty years. Twenty years of my life were spent with a man who hated me.â
Norma flopped her head back dramatically on the cushions, sighing heavily up at the ceiling. She listened to the soft creaking of the armchair as Alex stood, making his way over and plopping down heavily on the couch next to her. He laid his head over the back of the sofa, next to hers, and she breathed deep, the closeness of their bodies making her tense withâŠ. something that she couldnât quite name. Anticipation? Maybe. Nothing would happen though, she was sure of that. Alex didnât like her like that , and she didnât like him like that either.
Liar.
Okay, maybe she liked him like that a little bit. But not much. Not enough to have sex with him on her sofa in her living room. She could feel Alex staring at her, and it took everything to not turn her head to look back at him.
âHe didnât deserve you,â Alex finally said, his voice barely a whisper, and Norma felt a knot in her throat all of the sudden.
âI deserved him. It. All of it,â she replied once the knot had loosened, and Alex shook his head, but she didnât let him speak anymore. âI stayed. I shouldâve left after the first time he hit me but I didnât. I stayed. I stayed with a man who hated me, who scared me and hurt me, and with a man that couldnât even make me-â she bit her lip then, silencing the words that she almost let leave her lips, suddenly remembering who she was talking to, wondering for a moment if the glass and a half of whiskey really had inebriated her enough to almost let those words spill.
âCouldnât what?â he asked innocently, and her face flushed. She tore his gaze away from his and sat up, resting her elbows on her knees, groaning. âNorma?â
âDonât act dense,â she snapped and he frowned, sitting up next to her.
âWhat? I-Iâm not. What are you talking about?"
She turned back around to face him, eyes roaming over his face at the pure confusion in his gaze, seemingly not understanding where Normaâs innocent but also not so innocent sentence was leading. âOh, so you just are dense,â she teased, laughing anxiously, as he frowned, staring at her flushed cheeks and nervous smile while she fidgeted with her fingers.
âAlex,â she sighed. âHe couldnât⊠make meâŠâ she dragged out the words, giving him the opportunity to fill in the blanks as he stared at her, trying to understand what she meant, but drawing a blank. âOh my god!â she groaned. âHe couldnât make me cum.â
His silence felt different now, as he tore his gaze away from hers, face flushed as he covered it. âOh god. Norma Iâm sorry, I didnât- I wasnât- I-I-â
She couldnât help the bubble of laughter that escaped her at the sheer ridiculousness of it all. Here she was, at nearly eleven pm at night, with her husband-but not like that- telling him all about her shitty, dead, ex-husband who couldnât make her cum.
âOh god. What are we doing?â she laughed. âWhat am I even saying?â she picked up the whiskey bottle, giving it a good shake. âHave I really drank that much?â
He couldnât help but laugh with her, groaning slightly as he ran his hands down his face.
There was a brief moment of silence after their laughter subsided, before Alex finally turned to look at her again. âLike ever?â he asked, and she should be offended that he hadnât strayed from the topic, but couldnât really seem to care anymore.
âNever,â she confirms. âBut to be fair, no one else could either.â
She looked at him, smiling sheepishly at his shocked expression. This was not a conversation they shouldâve been having, it was drawing into dangerous territory, pushing a boundary that neither had crossed before. Norma blamed it on the lack of sleep from the past few days, but deep down knew that itâs for reasons other than that too.
âNo one?â he asked. âShelby?â
âPfft, Zack?â she laughed. âYeah right. He was young and he didnât care.â
Alexâs shock had faded into something so sad that Norma couldnât bear to look at him anymore. She didnât want him to feel sorry that none of her previous partners had ever cared, nor taken the time to try and give her any pleasure. It was almost embarrassing, and she felt broken.
âItâs fine, really,â she said quickly, as she averted her eyes. âI can take care of it myself.â
She startled as his hand rested atop hers, meeting his eyes briefly before looking back down at their hands. Hers seemed so small in comparison. âYou shouldnât have to.â
The conversation had gone much too far now, crossing over to the point of no return and there was no turning back, no unsaying what she said, no way to take back everything she had admitted to him in her second day of barely any sleep state of mind. She shouldâve expected his hand coming to touch her face, but somehow didnât, somehow still startling just slightly as she met his eyes. His thumb traced along her jaw, down over her bottom lip, his eyes following the path his touch was mapping out along her skin, and she let out a shaky breath.
âWhat are you doing?â she whispered, as he leaned in impossibly closer than before. âAlexâŠâ
His lips touched hers, just briefly, not even truly a kiss. Just a soft brush that left her wanting more, but knowing she had to stop him. Alex didnât like her like this. Her hands came up to touch his shoulders, giving in for a just moment longer as she prepared herself to deny him, for not only her own sanity, but his as well. He didnât like her like this.
She didnât get the chance to, however, because his next words have her whimpering, unable to catch her breath. âI can make you cum,â against her lips and she shuddered deliciously in his arms.
âNo youâŠâ another brush of his lips, another gasp, another shudder. âYou donât want me.â
âI do,â he breathed. âI do.â
âNo,â her hands push slightly on his shoulders, grip firm, keeping his body at somewhat of a distance even if his lips havenât left hers. âYouâre saying that now because you donât have any other options right now. Iâm here, Iâm convenient but Iâm not what you want.â
He pulled back to look at her, hands cupping her face and thumbs tenderly stroking her cheekbones. His gaze was so serious, yet so soft, and Norma found herself wanting to get lost in his eyes forever.
âYou are what I want, Norma. Iâve always wanted you.â
Her breath hitched at the confession, but she refused to let herself believe it. She couldnât let herself believe it, because Alex was a good man. So incredibly good, and despite their arguments and bickering and how much he got under her skin, he deserved so much more than what she had to offer.
So she shook her head vehemently again, feeling the need to tear herself apart so he didnât want her anymore, ever again.
âNo I⊠I canât cum. I wonât be able to, I-â
âYou donât know that, because no oneâs ever even tried.â
He was right. No man ever had the desire to touch her in ways that would make her feel on fire, no man had ever wanted to bring her to orgasm, to watch her gasp and shudder and crash and fall. No man before him.
âIâm- Iâm all gross Alex, I havenât showered in like three days. Iâm not wearing makeup, and my underwear is entirely unsexy, and Iâm not going to be good enough to-â
She was cut off as Alex suddenly grabbed her hand, his grip around her wrist tight, yet not painful. Somehow firm, yet gentle all at once, and she gasped when he pressed it against the hardness in his jeans. His hand cupped the back of hers, his fingers stroking ever so lightly along her dainty ones as she let out a shuddering gasp, softly squeezing him.
âLook at what you do to me, Norma,â she stared down at her hand over him, sucking in soft breaths to keep herself grounded as he watched her react to such intimacy. Alex pressed his forehead against hers. âFeel what you do to me and try telling me again that I donât want you. That youâre not good enough. Fuck⊠Norma. Youâre all Iâve ever wanted."
She closed her hand around him again, applying a bit more pressure, as his head fell to her neck, kissing and nipping at her soft and sensitive skin. Sheâs almost surprised at the choked out gasp he let out on the crook of her neck. Norma knew she was attractive, knew she was good at sex and had a knack for driving men insane, but never had she thought that Alex would want her like this. She never thought heâd want to touch her as softly and tenderly as he was now, or want to kiss her in places that made her shiver in his arms.
Norma saw herself as nothing but a nuisance to him. Sure, he was attracted to her, and she had imagined that theyâd probably have sex eventually, but sheâs genuinely surprised at how he was touching her, the gentle stroke of his fingertips being so fleeting that sheâs almost overwhelmed. And not only that, but Alex had expressed a desire to bring her pleasure. Had whispered that he wanted to bring her to release while he brushed his lips so soft over her own. Had insisted that heâd at least try while she was convinced she couldnât.
âI want to make you feel good. If this is what you want, if youâll let me⊠I want to.â
God, she wanted to just as badly. âNot here. Upst-â she gasped, letting out a nervous little giggle as he suddenly stood and swept her up into his arms. She let her head fall into the crook of his neck, pressing soft kisses against the sensitive skin as he carried her up the stairs and backed up into her room.
He set her on her feet the minute they crossed through the threshold, pressing his lips to hers in an entirely uncoordinated and sloppy way, both breathing hard as they tried to find a rhythm and balance to the frantic kisses. Her hands dropped to his belt, trembling as she began to undo it, looping the leather out through the rings, the metal clinking together as she struggled. His hands suddenly came down, covering hers and she let out a soft gasp and she met his gaze, his eyes kind.
âWe donât have to do this.â
Norma blinked up at him blankly for a moment, thinking for a moment that heâs changed his mind, before realizing that he sees her, shaking and nervous, unable to simply undo his belt, as a sign that she does not want this. That it has gone too far, and that she is afraid to take it back. Her tongue darted out quickly to wet her lips as his gaze softened slightly at her nervous little actions.
âI want to,â she breathed, reaching for his belt once more, but his hand stopped hers again, looking entirely unconvinced. âIâm just⊠nervous,â she said finally, realizing Alex wouldnât accept her answer without some sort of explanation.
âI havenât felt safe with a man in so long,â she breathed, eyes looking down at where her hands were fidgeting with his fingers. âI feel safe with you. And Iâm⊠nervous to mess it up. Iâm scared Iâm going to mess us up.â
He pressed his lips gently to forehead and she sighed, the tension escaping her at the tender gesture of affection. The affection that she found so rare from others, yet an affection that seemed to come so easily to him in regards to her.
âNothing you do could ever mess us up.â
âBut what if-â
âShh,â his lips find hers, the kiss so soft and tender, nothing like the sloppy, wet and rushed kisses they shared only moments ago. âI mean it. Nothing. Okay?â
Norma let out a soft sigh into his mouth, nodding frantically as his hands swept up and down her sides, the pressure intoxicating. They land on her hips, rest there as they continue to kiss, soft and slow and sensual now that the nerves have subsided a little. Norma knew she was safe, knew that Alex would stop the minute she said, knew that even if he couldnât make her cum that she would be happy solely for knowing that he wanted to try, and that he had given her safety to explore.
Her hands gripped the fabric of his shirt, pulling him back towards the bed, flopping down ungracefully, him following after her, his hand shooting out to catch himself before his entire weight flounced on top of her. She moved her lips down his jaw, breathing out a soft laugh into the skin as he tried to undo the buttons of her shirt with one hand, finding it harder to do than he anticipated.
âIâve got it,â she murmured sweetly, giving him a soft smile as she undoes the buttons, pulling the shirt off her with a practiced ease.
She slid further up the bed, realizing their half standing, half lying position was entirely inconvenient, and he followed, leaning down to press soft, sweet kisses against her newly exposed skin. He trailed his lips back up her neck, kissing along her jaw, stopping every so often to suck deliciously on her sensitive skin while his hands fumbled behind her for the clasp of her bra, finding it hard to locate when she was pressed against the pillows, and he couldnât help but blush at his seeming failure to undress Norma.
Norma laughed up at him, not unkindly, but enough to make Alex feel slightly more embarrassed as she pushed his hands away. âItâs on the front.â
âOh,â he muttered, watching as she undid the bra, sliding her arms out of the straps.
âAre you going to be able to unzip my skirt?â she teased, as she began to undo the buttons of his shirt. âOr will you need some help with that too?â
âOh shush,â he replied, moving her hands away from the buttons of his shirt to cup her breast in his hand, thumb gently rolling over her nipple, causing her to gasp just softly. âYouâre beautiful.â
âYouâre wearing too many clothes,â she countered, making to resume her work of button undoing, when he leans down, sucking the soft peak of her breast into his mouth. â Oh.â
Her head fell back against the pillows, whimpering softly as his tongue swirled around the sensitive bud of her nipple. Her fingers threaded through his hair, tugging his head back up towards her and clashing their lips together, sloppy and untethered, and she finally undoes the rest of the buttons of his skirt, pulling it off of him and throwing it haphazardly on the floor, her dainty hands running up and down his chest.
His hand slides down her stomach and around her backside, pulling at the zipper of her skirt. She lifted her hips, kicking the flowy fabric off, spreading her legs as he rested his thigh between hers, applying pressure where she needed it most, and she gasped. She rolled her hips against his thigh, letting out a soft mewl at the pleasure she was finding from simply rocking against him.
âJesus,â he murmured, watching her head fall back onto the pillows. âGod⊠youâre so beautiful.â
âCan you- oh- â she shuddered deliciously as he gently rolled her nipple between his fingers, relishing in the soft moans she was granting him. âI want⊠IâŠâ
âWhat do you want?â
âI want you inside me. Please, Alex.â
He moved his leg from where it was slotted between hers, feeling instantly sorry as she let out a little whine from the loss of contact, hoping to quickly make up for it as he undid his belt, kicking his jeans off his legs, as she does the same with her underwear, before immediately taking his place on top of her. Her hand reached down between them, pumping him softly into her hand, before lining him up at her entrance, pulling at his shoulder with her other hand, desperately trying to get him to lean down into her.
âAre you sure?â he breathed, hand cupping her face tenderly.
âIâm sure,â she whimpered. âAlex, I swear if you make me wait any longer-â she gasped, the threat dying on her lips as he slowly and gently slid into her, his thumb finding her clit and rubbing soft fluttery circles to help her relax.
âAre you okay?â he asked, almost concerned at her quick little pants.
âYes,â she breathed. âYou feel so good.â
He thrusted into her gently, causing another whimpering moan to spill from her lips, while his thumb continued itâs teasing little dance over her clit. âYeah?â
âMore. Please, I need more.â
He thrusted into her again, finding a steady and easy pace that she seemed to enjoy, gasps and whimpers and soft moans spilling from her lips, as her hands clutched onto him, trying to keep herself grounded amidst the overwhelming sensations. Alex suddenly increased the pressure on her clit, and she gasped as he rubbed his thumb around her in hard circles, her legs falling open easily, practically melting into the sheets below her as her release slowly built inside of her.
âAlex,â she whimpered. âI- I need- faster.â
He complied, groaning as he began to thrust into her at a faster pace, feeling as if he could come undone at any moment, willing himself to hold back. âGod, NormaâŠâ
She felt the steady pressure building inside of her, and she gasped, holding onto him tighter as his fingers began moving faster over her. The pressure continued to build, faster and faster, before she broke open, coming undone with a sharp gasp and a shaky moan, his fingers continuing as she rode through it, and slinking away from her when she became too sensitive and pushed it away. Alex followed not long after, thrusting sloppily a few times, before slipping out of her and finding his release on the sheets below, instantly feeling bad for dirtying her bed, but not wanting to cum inside her without permission.
âShit. Your sheets-â
She breathed out a soft little giggle, brushing her hair from her eyes. âI donât care about my sheets.â
He dipped his head down, pressing his lips soft against hers, laughing with her into the kiss as he brushed errant tendrils of blonde hair sweetly away from her face, hand cupping her cheek tenderly. Light suddenly flooded the room, and they broke apart, giggling softly to one another.
"Power's back."
"I see," she replied. "You know, if we just would've waited a bit longer than we wouldn't have to fumble around in the dark."
"I don't think I could've waited any longer," he admitted, and she laughed again.
Norma was not sure what this meant for them, where they would go from here, but she couldnât bring herself to dwell on it any longer, not when he was touching her so softly. Not when he gently cleaned her off, patting a warm cloth between her thighs, and kissing her forehead gently. Not when he changed her sheets, not when he wrapped his arms around her waist and lifted her with ease, flopping back onto the bed while they both laughed. And especially not when he wrapped her up gently in his arms, holding her close until they fall asleep.

Promises Kept - A WFW Missing Scene
Soooo...I let it slip earlier to @mamirugbee that in my original plot outline for We Found Wonderland the scene where Luke finally wins the ring was there. I ended up not writing it because I thought that would be too much angst on top of everything else and you all would riot. But she wanted it and I love her so I wrote it. But then I got distracted with other angst on the way to that angst...so you also get the immediate aftermath of Julie leaving. Oops. It's 2 for 1 night for WFW angst! Just remember I WAS ASKED FOR THIS. Love you, Jenni. đ
Luke held it together pretty well for approximately three days.
After watching Julie disappear right in front of his eyes, while he smiled...smiled to show her he would be ok...he had sunk to the ground, very much not ok. He had stayed there, just outside the garage doors, dizzy and sick to his stomach while the reality of the situation washed over him until finally the change in light alerted him to the fact hours had passed. He realized somewhere vaguely in the back of his mind through the haze of mental static that the rest of the guys would be home from school soon. He didnât want them to see him like this. He didnât want to be the one who had to tell them what had happened, didn't want to see the hurt in their eyes or even worse the sympathy. His instincts were screaming at him to run away from the situation, to escape like he had escaped his parentsâ house when their smothering attention and rules became too much. The urge to grab his acoustic and walk out and never come back was strong, his fingers clenching and unclenching at his side as he turned the idea over in his mind.
In the end it was never really an option.
He couldnât leave his friends.
He couldnât leave his band.
He couldnât leave his parents, not again.
And most of all he couldnât leave the life Julie had almost sacrificed everything to make sure he got to live.
He had promised her a lot of things. That they would make things work somehow. That he would win her that dumb ring. That he would help her reconnect with her dad. That it would always be him and her, Luke and Julie, in it together against nosy bandmates, and questionable record labels, and the looming possibility of being separated by thousands of miles (back when that had seemed like as far apart as they could get).
And he had promised her that he would take care of their friends, and follow his dreams and do his best to be happy.
It turned out that the one promise he had made her that every inch of him was screaming out in protest against might be the only one he could actually keep.
So he would.
Luke unclenched his palms and placed his hands flat against the pavement outside the garage doors. He took a deep if shaky breath then pressed them into the firm surface until he managed to haul himself to his feet, his legs protesting as he forced them to move through their stiffness. He just had time to drag himself into the bathroom and splash cold water on his face before he heard the telltale sounds of his friends approaching, their boisterous voices carrying from all the way down the driveway. He emerged back into the studio, purposefully turning away from the doors in a desperate bid to buy himself a few extra seconds to compose himself before he had to explain Julieâs absence.
âAnd then I said if a platypus is a mammal whereâs their nipples cause thatâs how mammals feed their kids, right?â
âReggie, I donât know what made you think we want to hear this conversationâŠâ
âOh come on, Bobby, whereâs your intellectual curiosity. Go on, Reggie.â
âRight, so then Mr. Gleeson said they donât have nipples. They feed their babies by basically sweating milk through milk gutters.â
âOk...I take it back, Bobby was right. I now know way more than I ever wanted to.â
âLuke, will get it. Hey, Luke! Guess what IâŠâ
Luke turned slowly to face his friends and watched their faces fall as they took in his tight expression. Apparently his efforts to school his face into a neutral mask had failed epically. Luke realized his hands were shaking and shoved the offending appendages into his pockets hoping that would hide the effects of his runaway emotions.
That also seemed to be wishful thinking.
âWhatâs wrong?â Bobby asked bluntly, taking half a step towards Luke before stopping short when he saw the way he flinched. âOh.â
âLuke, IâmâŠâ Alex swallowed hard and glanced away for a moment seemingly fighting with his own emotions. âIâm so sorry.â
Reggie was the last to speak, the panic stealing over his face like a punch directly to Lukeâs chest.
âWhereâs Julie?â
When Luke didnât answer right away he asked again, shaking off Alexâs attempts to place a comforting hand on his shoulder.
âLuke, whereâs Julie?â
âHome,â He answered simply, his voice steady despite the emotions still raging inside of him.
He knew what he had to do now.
He had to honor Julie the only way he could, by helping his friends be ok.
âWhat? No,â Reggie protested, looking back and forth between his friends as though expecting someone to tell him it was a joke. âShe wouldnât. Not without saying goodbye.â
âShe didnât have a choice,â Luke told him gently. âThe portal just appeared and she...she ran out of time.â
âOk, ok,â Reggie ran his fingers through his hair roughly, leaving pieces standing up in all directions. âWe can go to the ghost club, right? We can get Willie to help us get into Calebâs dressing room and we can go find her.â
âThatâs a good way to get killed by an evil ghost,â Bobby pointed out.
âWeâll figure it out,â Reggie insisted.
âReg...we donât even know...we donât know if Caleb still trusts WIllie or not. We havenât seen him since that night.â
Luke could hear the pain in his friendâs voice and he hated it. Alex might not have had the time to develop the same deep connection with Willie that Luke had with Julie, but he knew his friend had seen flashes of that potential in their stolen moments. The fact that Willie had been missing in action since he tried to help them save Julie weighed heavily on Alex. Luke could see it. He just couldnât do anything about it except be there for him as much as he could.
He was going to need Alex too.
He was going to need all of them.
âReggie, even if we could do that she didnât want us to. She didnât want us to leave our families or our dreams or our lives here. She fought so hard for us to have them. We have to live like itâs now or never, for her.â
He managed a small, sad smile hoping it would calm Reggieâs rising agitation but it seemed to have the opposite effect.
âDonât quote your lyrics at me, dude,â Reggie snapped, once again brushing off Alexâs attempts to put a comforting hand on his arm. âYouâre supposed to be in love with her. How can you just let her go without a fight?â
Luke felt like his throat was closing up as Reggieâs words hit him like a slap in the face. He knew his friend didnât mean it, not really. He was just hurt and scared and mourning the loss of the little sister he loved.
It didnât make it hurt any less to have his own doubts and guilt thrown back into his face though.
Before Luke could come up with anything else to say to comfort him, Reggie reached up to wipe at his eyes and spun on his heels, stomping out of the garage and down the driveway.
Alex shot Luke a worried look before nodding after their friend.
âIâll check on him. Iâll be right back, ok?â
Then he was gone and Luke and Bobby were alone in the garage.
Bobby was looking at Luke like he was some kind of wounded animal and Luke wished he would stop because the longer his best friend looked at him like that the more tempting it was to totally break down. And he couldnât do that and keep his promise to Julie. So he would hold it together. He would.
âIâm not going to ask if youâre ok because that would be a stupid question,â Bobby said, crossing the garage to sink onto the couch before patting the seat next to him expectantly.
Luke hesitated for a second or two before sighing and sinking down next to Bobby, the urge to tap his foot or drum on his knee overwhelming though he fought it down. He didnât need to give Bobby more ammunition about his mental state. Not that he needed it.
âLook, Iâm going to miss her too,â Bobby cleared his throat before reaching out to pat semi-awkwardly at Lukeâs knee. âAnd I know itâs going to be worse for you. But Iâm here for you. We all are. So just...donât run, ok?â
Luke could have laughed at that if his mouth had seemed to remember how. His friends really did know him too well. Still. He had already ruled out that course of action.
âI wonât,â He promised.
And he didnât.
What he did do was dive headfirst into trying to make sure their lives would go on like Julie wanted. He was there waiting when Reggie processed his feelings enough to feel bad about his outburst and showed up at the garage in the middle of the night and pulled Luke into a tight hug that lasted a long time. He was there when Alex wanted to talk about feeling anxious not knowing for sure if Julie had made it back to her time and what she had found there. He was even there when Bobby admitted that he missed Julie but he missed Queenie too and he wasnât sure that the band was ever going to be as close as they once were. Luke did his best to reassure them all, checked in on his mom, and started calling around trying to book them a gig even though they had hardly any songs they could use and none of the bookers he spoke to seemed particularly interested.
He forced himself to tell bad jokes, and offered to go get pizza and suggest busking so they could refill their food fund.
He did all of that for three days until it was like the adrenaline he had been running off of ever since Julie disappeared into a hole in the ground finally wore off. On the fourth day he knew his friends noticed that he was quieter than normal though none of them said anything, just exchanged mildly worried looks. On the fifth day he lost his appetite, picking at the leftover pizza that Bobby had warmed up for him and refusing the variety of junk food his friend then hauled out to the garage. On the sixth day he slept most of the day, drifting in and out of fitful dreams. He had only emerged for a couple of bathroom breaks and was back curled under the blanket he usually left unused when his friends showed up after school, their worried looks no longer mild.
The 7th day was a Friday but they didnât go to school. Instead they staged what amounted to an intervention, hovering around the couch (he didnât bother folding it out now that the possibility of Julie crawling in next to him was gone) and refused to stop staring creepily at him until he sat up with an annoyed huff.
âDonât you have school?â He muttered, pulling the blanket more firmly around his shoulders despite the smothering heat.
âWeâre not going,â Reggie said, reaching out and yanking the blanket away from Luke in on quick movement.
âHey!â Luke protested.
âWeâre worried about you,â Alex said ignoring the way Luke was suddenly looking anywhere but at his friends. âYou pretended nothing was wrong and then you crashed hard.â
âYouâre depressed,â Bobby said bluntly, because of course he did.
He was annoyingly accurate and to the point at all times unless he was hiding his meaning in some obscure literary quote of course.
âIâm not,â Luke tried, feeling strangely exposed without the weight of the blanket. âI miss Julie...a lot, ok? But she wanted us to live and Iâm living.â
âThereâs living and thereâs living,â Reggie countered, dropping down next to Luke to sling an arm around his shoulder. âAnd Julie would want you to be living, you know what I mean?â
âWe donât expect you to be ok,â Alex broke in quickly. âJust for you to be honest about whatâs going on with you. Youâve been there for us the past few days now itâs your turn.â
âIâm fine,â Luke tried one last time, though his argument sounded half-hearted even to his own ears.
âYou havenât showered in a week,â Bobby pointed out, the softness behind his eyes easing the harshness of his words as Luke forced himself to look up and meet his friendâs eyes. âCome on, rinse the smell off and then weâre taking a field trip.â
Luke groaned but forced himself to stand and cross the distance to the bathroom, his bones aching like he had spent years in bed, not hours. He hardly remembered the shower but when he reemerged some indeterminate amount of time later his hair was dripping and he admittedly smelled a lot better. He still felt a bit like he was walking through a heavy fog though, like some slight, almost undetectable force was making each one of his steps just that little bit more difficult. He thought it might not be the weight of something slowing him down at all but the absence of something. It was like he had forgotten how to do everything right without Julie next to him. Walking and eating and breathing. He knew he had done them all before he ever knew her but that didnât make them come any more naturally now that she was gone.
Still.
He had promised her he would try.
So he let his friends steer him out of the garage, let them lead him down the sidewalk, Alex and Bobby buffeting him on either side and Reggie walking in front, chattering away and peering back every few seconds as though afraid Luke would bolt if he didnât keep him in his sight. Luke for his part just shuffled along, grunting out a response when asked a direct question and keeping silent the rest of the time. Apparently the plan was to head to Reggieâs house. His mom would be at work and she had bought him this brand new video game console called a Playstation that the boys were all dying to try out. That newly separated parent guilt was apparently good for a few things, like letting Reggie have ice cream every night and expensive gifts. Luke was pretty sure that none of them were particularly in the mood to play video games and were putting on the enthusiasm for his sake. He appreciated it. He just couldnât match it.
But once they were actually in Reggieâs room, crowded around the little television he got for his last birthday, Luke had to admit he did feel a little more like a human being. He even caught himself laughing as he watched Alex and Reggie squabble over the second controller as Bobby clutched his above the fray. Reggie grinned when he saw Lukeâs brief smile and shoved the controller they had been fighting over into his hands.
âHere, you try!â
And he couldnât stand to see Reggie disappointed, not when he had seen him so hurt so recently. So Luke did try. And he let himself enjoy it. And he let himself tune out and pretend that there wasnât someone missing.
He did such a good job at pretending that it wasnât until they had left Reggieâs house several hours later in order to keep his mom from knowing they had skipped and headed for the ice cream shop that the gaping absence all came crashing back.
Because right around the corner from the ice cream shop was the arcade.
And right inside of the arcade entrance was a claw machine.
And inside of that claw machine he could only assume there was a purple plastic ring that would now never sit on his girlâs finger.
He couldnât explain why his feet carried him towards the arcade but they did, seemingly without any specific direction from him.
âLuke....â Alexâs worried voice called after him but he didnât pause until he was standing directly in front of the damn game that had been haunting him for months.
And there it was. The ring. Mocking him from the exact spot it had been in all along.
Apparently his friends had caught up to him by then because when Reggie spoke up it was from directly behind him.
âYouâve got to let that thing go, man,â His friend said carefully. âIt doesnât matter anymore.â
Luke found himself understanding Reggieâs initial reaction to the news about Julieâs departure because all of the sudden he was angry. He wasnât just angry, he was furious.
He brought his fists down in tandem on either side of the joystick, feeling the reverberation up his recently healed arm and had just enough time to wonder if that was the smartest idea before words were bursting out of him unbidden.
âIt matters,â He said fiercely, ignoring the way Reggie flinched slightly. âIt matters. She matters. She matters to me and sheâs gone and I said I would give her that ring and I didnât and now I canât and...and...it just matters, ok? It just does.â
Alex and Reggie both stared at him, eyes wide with worry seemingly unable to land on something helpful to say as they watched him finally implode. The silence stretched and Luke was just about to kick the machine just to have something to fill the gap and give him another chance to externalize the storm brewing inside of him when Bobby stepped forward calmly.
âHere,â He said, his voice calm and even. âGo ahead.â
He held out his hand and Luke instinctively stuck his out to catch whatever Bobby was trying to hand him. He folded his fingers over the mystery object to keep it from falling to the ground, before uncurling them carefully to examine it.
It was a quarter.
Luke looked up sharply expecting to see sympathy or something worse on Bobbyâs face but all he saw was that look his best friend gave him when they were disagreeing on a song or when they couldnât agree on what toppings to order for their pizza. Or maybe more like when Luke had wanted to use those fireworks for pyrotechnics or when he had suggested a book club as a viable gig. Like he didnât approve of what Luke was doing but also like he was going to be right there behind him, letting him know he was an idiot and then helping him anyway.
Somehow it was exactly what Luke needed.
So he didnât say anything else, just swung to face the machine and deposited his quarter in the slot before he could think better of it.
The game came to life as he swung the joystick jerkily to the right, not letting himself think too hard about the exact aim as the claw hovered over the ring in itâs plastic container. He slammed his hand down on the button to drop it probably harder than was strictly necessary but it felt good to have an excuse to hit something. The claw dropped and clutched itâs mechanical arms around the plastic container. Luke tried not to react, afterall he had gotten this far many times before, but the weak arms always released the ring long before it could actually make it to the prize shoot. But even as that hopeless thought crossed his mind the claw was rising, taking the ring with it and this time it didnât drop back to its former spot. This time the ring remained locked in the clawâs embrace until it tumbled down into the prize shoot leaving all four boys to stare at the machine in surprise.
âDid that justâŠâ Alex started.
âYou did it,â Reggie practically whispered, disbelief clear in his voice.
Luke for his part just stared at the claw machine that had once again gone silent and still as he tried to process what had just happened. He had been so angry a minute ago and he could never win the ring and it didnât matter because Julie was gone...Julie was gone...but it did matter and now he had won the ring and...did he really just win the ring?
Once again it was Bobby who broke them all out of their stupor, stepping forward and reaching through the metal flap to retrieve the ring, pressing the plastic container insistently into Lukeâs shaking hands.
âYou did it,â He said simply but firmly.
âI did it,â Luke echoed, his voice slightly choked.
âYou said you would and you did,â Bobby continued. âItâs ok, Luke. You did it.â
Luke was very aware that Bobby was talking to him like a small child and he wanted to be offended, he really did, only he felt like a small child. Like nothing made sense and all of his emotions were too big for him. He had tried for so long and so hard to win that stupid ring, had seen it as a metaphor for how he felt about Julie, how he would do anything for her, how he wanted her to know that as intrinsically as she knew her own name. He had tried so hard and it had never worked and now she was gone and the very first time he tried, the first time, and he had done it.
Luke felt tears pricking at his eyes and did his best to fight them down.
âLukeâŠâ Reggie started, his own eyes looking suspiciously wet.
Luke couldnât bear to hear what Reggie was going to say or to make eye contact with any of his friends when he felt on the brink of breaking into sobs. He spun to face the machine again only that didnât seem to help. His vision went blurry and his throat went tight and the next thing he knew he was breaking down into sobs. He tried to stifle them in a fit of embarrassment but there wasnât much point. The tsunami had started and all he could do was ride the wave and pray he was in one piece on the other side.
He leaned forward and pressed his forehead against the cool glass of the claw machine, the soothing temperature doing little to slow the tears rolling down his face or the hiccuping, painful sounds that were emerging from his mouth. The ache in his chest was almost unbearable but it was matched by the sharp pain in his hand as he clutched so hard at the ringâs plastic container he was sure it would leave an angry red outline when he finally uncurled his fingers.
He loved her.
He loved her so much.
He loved her and he was never going to see her again and he won her the ring and she was never going to know it.
He was so alone.
Only he wasnât.
Because suddenly there were warm arms wrapping around him from every direction, cheeks pressed against his shoulders and the top of his head, soft words of comfort being spoken in three different voices.
âItâs ok, Luke.â
âLet it out.â
âWeâre here.â
And he did.
He had promised Julie they would do their best to be happy. He intended to keep that promise. But today all he felt was pain. And that would have to be ok too.
And it was.
And they were.
Not all at once.
Not for a long time if he was being honest.
But slowly and steadily genuine smiles, and laughter began to work their way back into their lives. They didnât talk much about Julie at first. It hurt too much. But eventually Reggie brought up a story about her over pizza and soon they were all chiming in, recounting their favorite moments with the girl who would always live in their hearts even if she could no longer live in their world. After that they brought her up often and it hurts but it also heals.
Luke took to wearing the ring around even though it was too small for all of his fingers except his pinkie and often got stuck even then. Bobby didn't comment on the way his finger was starting to turn as purple as the ring itself, simply handed him a black cord one day for him to string it on and brushed off Lukeâs rush of thankful words. After that Luke wore the ring on a cord around his neck, dangling down to thump gently against his heart as he walked, the cool plastic a constant reminder of what he lost but what he gained too.
He wasnât living the life he would have chosen for himself but he was living the life Julie had chosen for him. He hoped the two would come together eventually. He had to have faith that they would.
Eventually he sat down to write a song for her and ended up with a poem instead.
Eventually he had the idea of sending her a message through time, a box filled with all of the things she had loved and left behind, all the ones that would fit in a small box anyway. Eventually he pried the teddy bear version of himself out of Reggieâs reluctant fingers to go inside. Eventually placed all of their carefully selected polaroids inside too.
And eventually he slid a purple ring off of the cord he wore it on, placed it carefully back into its original container and left it for her to find with a lingering kiss pressed to its surface.
Eventually.
But first.
He lived.

Erased Part 1
Pairing: Bucky Barnes x Reader
Warnings: yandere, obsession, stalking, mentions of death and grave robbery, might get darker as the story progresses.
Words: 3870.
Summary: One night your friend calls to remind you about commemorating your classmate who had drowned many years ago.Â
P.S. This was influenced by a Russian VN Opravdanie and some mourning rituals.
_____________________
One more evening. One more wasted day. With a grocery bag in your hand you kept walking the snowy streets of your home town where you spent all your life, never really trying to move somewhere: you had long decided there was no sense in going anywhere else even if your never changing routine was driving you crazy sometimes. Life was all the same in other places, too.
It was boring. Always quiet, always repetitive, always reminding you that it didnât matter even if youâd forget the whole past year because it was all the same. A boring office job, small but stable salary, meetings with a couple of friends and fellow classmates from time to time, going to the same grocery store every week, returning to an empty apartment, spending your evening watching tv on the couch near a small radiator. Sometimes you would visit your parents or grandmother, listening to their concerns about you not having your own family yet and refusing to meet some son of their friends. Visits to another town close by were even more rare. You had never actually been to another country, and you had no idea what if felt like. Funny, but you didnât even care.
You were stuck in that small snow-covered town where it had always been cold even when the gloomy summer was coming, and that was how it was supposed to be. You were destined to work somewhere you didnât even like, one day marry a good for nothing guy and give birth to children who would inherit the same fate. There was nothing that could change - unless some hurricane would come and destroy the town at all. Then you would have to settle in some similar boring place and live the same way there.
Shaking off the snow from your hood, shoulders, and boots, you stepped into your apartment, happy it was much warmer inside - the radiator was working, thank goodness. As you hang your coat inside a hall closet, you brought the bag to the kitchen, lazily opening the fridge and looking at the meat leftovers and some porridge you cooked this morning. Uh-huh, you were too tired to make dinner, really. Some ham sandwiches would do.
Sitting on the coach again and watching some noir movie with a sandwich in your hand, you thought about how stupid your life was. What was you reason to live? Do some work nobody cared about? Making those silly reports nobody was going to read? Pleasing your parents with your mere presence? It was all you could think of, and the thought made you sad.
Suddenly, your phone rang, and you almost dropped the sandwich. Who was that? Your parents were going to bed early, and they didnât really call you at this hour. Who was that?
Ah, Alex, a former classmate of yours who then studied in the same university as you. He was your good friend, and from time to time you were gathering in a cafe to chat about how things were going or just walked the streets together, complaining about your jobs.
âDonât forget to commemorate Barnes today.â The message said, and you froze, furrowing your brows. Commemorate who?
Thatâs what you wrote to him, trying to remember who Alex was talking about.
âBarnes! Our classmate.â The next message said. âRemember when he got transferred to another school when we were 14? Iâve just talked to Anna, she said he drowned in the lake that year. Commemorate him today, itâs the day of his death.â
Oh shit. Itâs true, you remembered that funny kid with a smile a mile wide and striking blue eyes all the girls were jealous of. How could you forget James? If you remembered well, you were kind of in love with him, but you were too young to really recognize your feelings and do something about them. Besides, when you thought of it now, you doubted James wouldnât laugh at you. You two were just 14 years old, for Godâs sake.
So, he died? Drowned? He probably wanted to take a shortcut through the lake instead of going through the whole park surrounding it, but that year the ice wasnât strong enough to carry his weight, and he drowned just like several careless boys before him. Poor James. He was just a kid when it happened.
Suddenly, you realized how stupid of you was to think about your boring life and get upset over something so trivial. James was dead. Youâd never chat about him with Alex and hear something about Barnes moving to some other city or getting a good raise or having a kid. He died. He was never going to get a job, marry someone, have children and live happily. You bet he would give anything for the boring life you were having.
Feeling cold, you stood up from the couch and headed over to the kitchen with a phone in your hand, a half-finished sandwich in the other. If it was the day of Jamesâ death, you should really commemorate him: it meant having a drink and remembering something good about the boy, rest his soul. Maybe the next time you saw Alex you should talk about James with him, ask how did it really happen.
Despite you going through all the kitchen counters the only thing you found was some half-empty bottle of vodka probably forgotten by Alex or some of his friends. Shivering in your old knitted sweater, you looked out the window and furrowed your brows: it was too cold and dark to return to the grocery store for a bottle of wine. Youâd prefer staying home and having just one shot of vodka, it was more than enough for commemorating someone. Not like James would care, really.
Cutting a few pieces of ham, cheese and some stale bread, you stopped for a second and went to an old wooden cupboard, taking out a few candies in bright-colored wrappings. Deciding it would be enough, you poured vodka into the glass and flinched, taking it closer to your mouth. Ugh, you never really liked strong alcohol, and the smell was kind of disgusting. Alex would laugh at you now, you thought and brought the glass to your mouth again.
Iâm sorry it happened to you, James, you said to yourself, and the image of a smiling boy suddenly appeared in your head. You were a good kid. Rest in peace.
Knowing you wonât be able to tolerate the drink in your glass if you kept taking a sip after sip, you downed the shot and squeezed your eyes shut, feeling the liquid burning your throat and making you cough. Shit, it was certainly too strong for you, so you quickly took a piece of bread and put some cheese on eat, swallowing it to get the taste of vodka away. Disgusting.
I hope you are in a better place now, James.
Taking a deep breath, you quickly finished your improvised sandwich and took a candy, leaving a wrapping on the table and not even bothering with throwing it in the trash bin. The taste of alcohol was still lingering on your tongue, and it was hard to breathe, making you cough and shut your eyes again. Damn, that was the last time you drank it. From now on nothing but wine!
Thinking water wasnât enough to keep that irritating taste away, you put a metallic kettle on the stove to make some tea and sat back, watching the snow storm becoming stronger outside. Except the actual snow, everything was pitch black - street lights never worked despite people complaining to the town administration all the time. They only shone bright near the town hall, thatâs how thing were in this godforsaken place.
Shit, you had the audacity to think of things like that when you were commemorating James, the boy who died before he even reached adulthood. Who on Earth cared about street lights right now?
Shaking your head, you decided to switch the lights off in the kitchen to have a chance to see the street. Soon you were sitting close to a cracked windowsill and staring at the never ending blackness, finding an odd comfort in it and the sounds of a raging storm. With each passing second it felt like your life wasnât as bad as you thought.
____________
When you woke up from a loud sound as if someone was hitting the walls with great force, it smelled like something was burning in the kitchen, your throat dry and your head heavy; you felt like you were knocked down and stepped on because your head hurt. What had happened? What was that? That smell?..
The kettle on the stove.
Your body moved on your own when you opened a window, the snow getting in immediately and flying over the kitchen while you struggled to stand, using a chair to get closer to a stove with its surface becoming red, a kettle slowly melting on it. As you switched if off, you turned on the tap and immediately poured water over the kettle, then spraying some water on your face and clothes, realizing you almost caused a fire. Why didnât the damn alarm work? Oh, this shit was so old you were hardly surprised.
Damn, you were lucky you had an electric, not a gas stove. Youâd be dead by now.
As you slowly came back to your senses, you suddenly thought about that odd sound of someone hitting the wall upstairs, eventually waking you up. There was an old man living upstairs, the one who had always been in a cranky mood, but he had never woke you up at night like that. Was it the heat? Did he feel it and woke you up? Was it something else?
Looking at what was left from your beautiful metallic kettle on the stove, you let out a breath nervously and, wearing something like your old autumn jacket - it was hard to tell what you pulled from a hall closet - you quickly left your apartment, running up the stairs. What if the old man was having a stroke?
Feeling a bit dizzy still, you banged his door desperately, not knowing if he was still conscious or not. Was he still alive? Was he alright? If he were, was he going to open the door and yell at you at the top of his voice for almost burning your apartment down? Well, you thought youâd prefer the last option if it meant the man who saved you also stayed alive.
But he wasnât opening. In fact, you heard no sounds coming from his apartment at all. Shit, he was really having a stroke, and you needed...
âIs everything alright?â Somebody to your left asked, and you jumped, clutching the jacket on your chest. âIâm sorry if I scared you, but you have been banging the door as if your life depends on it.â
It was a tall, beefy man in a black t-shirt with some heavy metal band on it, his dull brown hair quite long for a man living in a town as conservative as yours, eyes strikingly blue. He was living next to the man above you.
âYour neighbor...â You had a hard time pulling yourself together, your throat  parched and scratchy. âHe has been hitting the wall... He might be having a stroke.â
The man arched an eyebrow at you, cocking his head to the side. âYou sure? He went to see his children a few days ago. I donât think he came back.â
âNo, Iâm sure!â
Obviously, the wall banging sounded right above your head, and no one but an old man living above you could do it. Yes, you were close to fainting that moment, but the sound was too clear to just brush it off.
âI need to call an ambulance.â
âWait, he left me the keys to his apartment in case if the drain bursts again. Give me a second.â The next moments the stranger disappeared inside his own apartment, and for a couple of agonizing seconds you were left all alone on the staircase until the man showed up with a key in his hand, proceeding to open the door.
Getting inside, you started yelling loudly, âSir! Sir, are you here?â
You ran to the kitchen, almost forgetting about the stranger: the picture of an old man laying on the floor breathless was making your hair stand on end. However, once you got there and put the lights on, you realized there was no one there. The kitchen was completely empty, dust gathering on the top of the counters and in the corners of the room. It looked like no one had been there for at least a couple of days. Were you mistaken? No, it couldnât be, you heard that sound, it woke you up, for Godâs sake!
Immediately proceeding to the other rooms, you saw a blank expression on the face of the stranger wandering the corridor and realized no one was in the apartment at all. How could it be?
âSee, he didnât return yet.â The man said as you turned to him, perplexed and not really understanding what was happening here. âThere was no banging, I didnât hear anything but you, actually.â
âNo, it canât be.â You put a hand on your forehead, deciding whether you had been hallucinating from the heat or the man was simply lying to you. âI... Iâm sure I heard something. Could it be the other neighbor?â
âThere are no other neighbors. Just the old man and me.â
___________
You tried forgetting about that night, still shivering from the thought you could easily die if you didnât wake up. The kettle was destroyed along with your stove, and dad sent you some money to get a new one once he heard you crying over the phone. He promised not to tell about this your mom - she would definitely either faint or have a real heart attack.
The old man came back home a few days later just like Bucky, the guy you met that night, told you. He was perfectly alright, still in his snarky mood though. You decided you really heard that knock in your dream, otherwise the only way to explain what had happened was if thieves got inside old manâs apartment, but it was ridiculous. Buckyâs flat was certainly too far for you to hear the sound so clearly, too.
When you told Alex the story, he took the whole other direction, watching you wide-eyed and telling you it was certainly the spirit of James waking you up and saving you from such stupid death. In the end, that time you had been in the middle of commemorating your dead classmate. He certainly didnât want you to die the same day as him. Maybe he was even grateful to you for remembering him.
Well, whatever. Despite you actually getting nervous because of Alexâs words, you decided it didnât matter. You were safe. Now you just had to take care and never drink anything alcoholic at all. And never switch off the lights when your stove was on.
The next week you spent trying to forget about this story, working like a horse and taking extra hours just not to return home to your empty apartment. You were going to spend the weekend at your parentsâ place for a change, but on Friday the last minute when you already wanted to depart Alex suddenly showed up at your door with a bottle of vodka, pack of ham and some sliced bread in a plastic packet.
âAre you mad?â You raised your eyebrows at him, angry he brought a bottle when you explicitly told him you werenât drinking anymore. âWhat is this?â
âThatâs not for you.â Your friend brushed it off as if it didnât matter. âWe have to visit Barnesâ grave.â
âWait, what?â
âWe need to visit his grave.â Alex repeated to you angrily, shoving a pack of ham into your arms. âI talked to the priest, and he said we need to go visit boyâs grave. Itâs a must!â
You rolled your eyes at him, not even knowing how to react. Clearly, your friend has lost his mind.
Surprisingly, Alex was so pushy you couldnât get him out of your place until you agreed to go to the graveyard with him and pay your respect to your classmate. Alex was absolutely sure the boy had saved your life, and it was disrespectful towards him to just leave things as they were. You agreed only because your friend had promised to bring you to your parents with his car.
Once you bought a couple of red carnations, the two of you headed to the graveyard, passing a small church and stopping the car right in front of the large iron gates. Nervously looking at them, you wrapped your coat tighter around your body trembling from cold, glancing at Alex in that stupid fur hat of his.
âCome on, it wonât take long.â He said, catching a sight of you. âI know the place. Letâs just go clean the grave, leave flowers and vodka, and then go. Itâs the least we can do.â
Huffing and puffing with irritation, you got up from your seat and left his old car, a pack of ham still in your hands along with carnations. It was ridiculous, but, well, cleaning someoneâs grave wasnât a bad thing, really. You wouldnât be surprised if Jamesâ parents moved to some other place after that terrible incident, and his grave could be deserted after all these years.
Clenching carnations in your hand, you followed Alex into the gloomy graveyard, looking at old rusted crosses and new shining ones, moss-covered gravestones and a couple of monuments made by some rich citizens for their beloved who had passed away. You didnât like coming to this place - it felt like it had always been cold here even in the hottest day of the year. Now, in the middle of February, it was freezing.
âJust a few more meters!â The man in front of you said, gesturing somewhere to the left where there were much less graves. âIt should be here.â
Furrowing your brows, you kept walking, looking at the grey gravestones and looking for a familiar name. Not this one... not that one either... those two werenât what you needed...
You bumped into Alex all of a sudden as he froze in place, and you snapped at him, âWhat the hell man? Why are you standing here?â
But he didnât reply to you, gesturing somewhere to the right side of the path, and you stilled on your spot, too, looking at the destroyed grave with a broken tombstone laying in the snow. A little iron fence around it was torn apart, and it even looked like someone tried digging the grave. As you got a bit closer, you read âJames Buchanan Barnesâ on the broken stone and clenched Alexâs hand in yours, afraid to make one more step. God, who did that? What monster could destroy a grave, much less the one of a poor boy who died so young?
It looked so horrible there was no reason to attempt cleaning this mess. This place certainly needed a renovation, but you didnât even know if you were allowed to do it since you werenât Jamesâ relative. God, why no one tried doing something with it? Did his parents really leave the town?
âThatâs not good.â Alex suddenly said, his face getting extremely pale. âOh shit, this is not good at all.â
âOf course, it isnât.â You shook your head, still unable to believe your eyes. âWhat kind of bastard do you have to be to do that? Letâs go ask a supervisor what has happened here.â
When you found the man cleaning the path on the other side of the graveyard, he told the two of you it was a very odd story when somebody destroyed a boyâs grave, going as far as ruining his tombstone and even digging up the coffin. Well, of course, from time to time some vandals would show up to make a mess, but it had never went further than painting a few tombstones. Besides, only Jamesâ grave had been destroyed, all the ones close to him were left in the same state as before. Why? Why targeting a grave of some poor drowned boy? The supervisor thought someone decided that his parents put something very valuable into the grave, provoking a thief to act, but the strangest thing was that the coffin turned out to be completely empty. The corpse had never been found as if it had never been there at all.
Did they bury an empty coffin? If the body had been destroyed or not found at all, there was nothing odd in that, but the supervisor swore the coffin wasnât empty when he had been helping bury the boy. It had been such a tragedy when it happened, he said, adding he remembered that day well: the town you lived in was small, and the death of a child was a big thing here.
What happened to Jamesâ body? The supervisor didnât know. By the end of the story he was talking in a hushed voice. On the other hand, Alex was so pale as if he saw a ghost.
You spent time crossing the graveyard in complete silence as you processed the words of an old supervisor. What a cruel thing it was, to stole a corpse of a 14 year old kid who had done nothing wrong in his entire life. You couldnât comprehend the reasoning behind this act: what, when the thief found nothing in the coffin he decided to take a corpse and throw some punches at it? God, it was disgusting. You really hoped that person was already in prison.
âListen, I need to go and see the priest.â Alex mumbled to you in the car, and you realized he was trembling a little as if the thing he saw was too much for him. âThatâs a very, very bad thing. I'm not sure Barnesâ soul rests in peace.â
âAlex, please.â You rolled your eyes, eating a piece of ham you were intended to leave on the grave. What, did you friend was really going to talk about ghosts after all he saw? He should have been worried about the thief destroying peopleâs graves. âYouâre too superstitious. Of course, he rests in peace! His grave has nothing to do with it, but we really need to contact the administration, make them repair the place and found the bastard who did this. Itâs inhuman to leave it like that.â
âNo, no, you donât understand!â The man on the driverâs seat shook his head disapprovingly. âWhat if James is still here, unable to continue his path? What if his ghost still wanders this place after all these years? Fuck, he certainly isnât good anymore.â
âAlex-â
âNo, canât you see? That time when you fell asleep with your stove one... What if he didnât save you but tried to kill you when you commemorated him that night?â

Willie could feel a stinging feeling and a purple stamp appeared on his hand. When the stamp appeared he could no longer remember who Alex was. The name meant nothing to Willie now.

you're the only one who makes me (my wildflower) (Rated T) [Bobby/Reggie]

Someday (I'll See You Again) (Rated T) [Alex/Willie]
Summary: Theyâre wrong. Alex, you are not a failure. Youâre incredible. Youâre smart. Youâre funny, and the best friend I could ask for. Youâre a wicked talented drummer and you have a beautiful voice. And more important than all of that, is that youâre you, Alex. And the you you are is wonderful, and lovable and perfect. If your parents canât see that, thatâs their own fault. But I swear, Alex. If youâre afraid of them, I need you to tell me. You have to be safe.â Willieâs voice had gone desperate by the end. Alex deserved to know how freaking amazing he was and the fact that his parents didnât bother to tell him, and actively worked to tear him down instead, was infuriating.
But Willie also worried about him. Heâd worried about Alex since the first time he heard Mr. Mercer shouting through the window, a worry that never really went away. Not with the way Alex automatically straightened up when his parents were mentioned, as if he could hear his dad lecturing him about appearances from miles away. Not with the way Alex looked when he was with them, perfectly pieced together and falling apart at the seams, eyes distant and shoulders tense. Willie was pretty sure he had worrying about Alex etched in his bones by this point.
The Energy Never Dies (Rated T) [Gen Fic]

Dancing in the Dark Chapter 3
Itâs finally done!Â
Michael gets about three steps toward an exit when Isobel appears at his shoulder.
âMichael,â she says softly, a hand on his forearm. âIâm so sorry. I looked all around but I donât see him either.â
âHow-? Never mind,â he responds on a sigh.
âCome dance with me.â
âIz, I just want to go home.â
âI know, but I want one last dance with my brother. Besides, you have to take all this stuff down, so you canât leave yet anyway.â Isobel is clearly trying to goad him into a smile and has already somehow managed to herd him over to the dance floor.
Michael lets out a deep, long-suffering sigh. âOne dance, Iz. One. And then Iâm going to go sleep in the bed of my truck until itâs time to pack up.â
Isobelâs smile is blinding.
She gets two dances. But only because Michael is so deep in his thoughts about Alex that he doesnât notice the song change until Isobel reaches up to brush one of his curls off his forehead, bringing him back to himself.
âDo you want to talk about it?â
Michael sighs. âNot particularly, Iz.â
âOkay, thatâs fine. You just seemed really happy earlier and now you look like someone stole your dessert,â she pauses as a look of horror crosses her face. âOh my god, did Alex eat your dessert and thatâs why youâre all pissy? Michael, I have extras! You donât need-â
âIz! Itâs not about the cheesca-wait you have extras?â
âOf course I have extras! I ordered tons of extras for everything and Iâll let you come by tomorrow and pick out whatever you want. Now spill. Whatâs going on with Alex?â
âI donât know, Iz!â
At some point they stopped actually dancing, Michael being too distracted to lead, so Isobel picks up the slack and takes over to finish out the song.
âI thinkâŠI think I fucked up Iz,â Michael finally whispers, looking down at his feet. âI think maybe Alex was hinting atâŠsomething, and I didnât catch on and now heâs gone. We were doing really great at finally being friends and-and I donât want to lose that. Not again. I donât think-â
âHey, you didnât ruin anything,â Isobel says, voice soothing and soft before it turns wry and teasing. âBut if youâre asking if Alex was flirting with you? The answer is absolutely yes. Honestly, Iâm not sure how you didnât notice. The two of you are so obvious itâs literally painful to watch. And this tie? That he pulled out of nowhere and looks so perfect on you Iâm jealous? That isnât nothing, Michael.â
âThen why did he leave, Iz? He was just at the bar with Max and then he was gone! He rode with me, so itâs not like he just hopped in his car. He had to have left with someone else. I think maybe this was our time andâŠI missed it. Besides, I donât know if the tie was for me anyway.â Isobelâs nose is scrunched in concentration which means sheâs poking at Max for some answers, but she turns at that to give him a look before focusing back on Max. Michael is just about to leave her to it and go crawl into the bed of his truck to be devastated in peace when Sophie taps him on the arm.
âHi, dear. Your lovely Mr. Sanders was so kind to indulge me in several dances this evening, but I was hoping to get one with you too. Would you do me the honor of one last dance? I think thatâs all these old knees have in them tonight.â
Michaelâs smile is only a little forced as he leads her to the middle of the floor while Isobel heads towards Max at the bar. Michael tries to focus on the dance and responding to Sophieâs questions as she has been one of the only bearable people at this whole event, her kind, motherly demeanor weirdly putting him at ease instead of on edge. It doesnât work.
âYou look a thousand miles away. Iâm not keeping you from something, am I? Or someone?â
Michael shakes his head. âNah, aside from Isobel, no one wants to dance with a guy with two left feet and no sense of rhythm.â
Sophie gives him a stern, but kind look. âWell, you havenât trod on my feet once, so donât think being a little clumsy means you canât partake in the joy that is dancing. And where is that young man of yours? He danced with me first thing, though,â she lowered her voice to whisper an aside, âI think it was just to goad Walter over there into asking me himself,â she says with a wink and a smile over at Sanders whoâs sun-weathered face still manages to flush a bit, and which Michael is now trying very hard not to think about. âBut Alex said his leg was only good for a few dances, and he was saving the rest of them for you.â
Michael swallows hard and tries to bury the hope that springs up at her words. âI canât find him anywhere around here, so I think this will both of our last dances,â he says with a slightly watery smile.
Sophie pats his shoulder gently. âPerhaps he had to take a call? He was on the phone earlier when you were dancing, maybe he just stepped out. I might be old, but Iâm not blind. That boy looks at you the same way my son looks at his wife, and he literally took a bullet for her.â
She waves off Michaelâs shocked look. âShe served as well, thatâs how they met.â
âThat isâŠquite a story,â Michael comments. âAnd thanks. For saying that about Alex. ItâsâŠItâs probably not true, but-â Michael cuts himself off as he spots Isobel and nearly trips over his feet in surprise.

Finding out about Harry getting the movie role đ„șđ„șđ„ș
No matter how many times you told him not to worry, he did.
You supposed it was only human nature. Everyone had a little worry from time to time. However, with Harry it always seemed to be tenfold.
He would channel his worry in many ways, depending on whatever news he was waiting for. Sometimes he would be deep and brooding, going into himself and becoming a one word answer kind of guy.
Other times he would busy himself with the most menial of tasks. That three mile run he had been putting off earlier in the week would now become between a five to seven mile run and something he absolutely had to do for his own benefit.
The list of groceries that you were going to go out for on Sunday - the ones stuck to your fridge - were now his responsibility to pick up when he went out on a petrol run to fill up his car (that he wasnât going to drive considering he couldnât really go anywhere in that present moment of time).
Or the song he had pencilled time in to finish now became important enough that he couldnât wait for the studio time he had booked and his own recording outlet in the comfort of his home was more than enough to complete the job.
Heâd had his deep and brooding moment at the beginning of the week, making it so you were lucky if you managed to get a grunt out of him. You rode that wave out together, neither a comment said from the other about arguably his childish display.
Part of you didnât expect him to react in such a way. The tape he had sent weeks ago had been well received but he had been gently let down. Beaten by a better man. At first it stung, but it wasnât like he would be down and out without the opportunity.
He took it on the chin. Brushed himself off and proudly stuck out his chest. Moved onto the next thing, just like before.
ââS a bit shit but Iâll live,â he admitted, swallowing thickly before taking a larger pull from his wine than its predecessor, as he curled up with you on the couch in knackered old sweats that wouldâve been worth binning because of how threadbare and hole-y they were.
His comment has been out of the blue, Harry choosing not to talk more about the situation after he had given you the news that he wasnât the man for the role. Nonetheless you were ready to engage in the conversation now if it were needed.
âNot going to buy it off Sky movies when it finally appears on their listing though?â
âAbsolutely fucking not.â
Youâd laughed about it. Shared smiles over his whispered experience of recording an audition rather than entering a room and feeling clammy palms like he had done for previous opportunities that he had put himself forward for.
He had talked and talked about scenarios that you knew because you had experienced them with him too. About the line running and how much of a massive ballache it could be at times, invasive and often overbearing due to how all-encompassed he became. Still you let him speak as if these scenarios were new to your ears because somewhere inside you knew that was what he needed.
Then the moment was gone, and the train picked up steam for something else like it always did. Where he was jumping into a car and driving across Europe with his friends, promising you within his goodbye kisses that ââs not just a piss up wiâthe ladsâ and that he was actually going strictly for business.
And that was it.
You thought it was forgotten.
Pulled into a false sense of security when you savoured the way the world around you had made it so the two of you had time to really connect. To enjoy each other without the apologies around rushed kisses because he was being pulled away, again.
Hand movements slower as you undressed each other in the dusk of the evening or pitch black of the early hours rather than desperately seeking the missed feeling of warmed europhia. Basking in the beauty that came with sluggish pulls and desperate pleas.
That was until he was sitting at the table over breakfast, one bleak morning, hanging on to the words that had been shared between himself and his manager.
All of it fading so easily.
His face was pensive as he listened, free hand dropping his fork and moving to push through his bed head before the backs of his fingers roughly rubbed at the facial hair that was scattered along his jawline and cheeks.
You tried not to stare for too long, not wanting to be caught in your eagerness to eavesdrop. Hands somewhat shaky as they buttered at toast, and cut the crusty bread in half ready to bite into when you felt your hunger return.
The sugar of your tea wasnât quite sweet enough, as you lifted your gaze to watch Harry continue to listen and sipped at the warm drink.
âKnew it had gone well but didnât think itâd gone that well,â he replied to whatever Jeff or Alex, or some else, had been saying to him over the other end of the line.
Then his smile broke across his lips.
âShe said that,â he paused, blowing out a huge breath of air partly from relief but also hearing such high praise. ââS good, âs great even. Nice to hear.â
Something inside you knew he was gone. Already whisked off somewhere else in all but body. People around him putting him on flights to take him away from you, in clothes that didnât fit but could be tailored to him to look like his second skin. Literally made for him.
His hair was bound to be the first thing to make him look less like your Harry, in a way that was odd to the eye but weirdly pleasing to your wildest imagination and deviant personality which was known to rear itself between the two of you from time to time.
The feeling, mixed with those sudden rush of thoughts, was only solidified when his eyes darted over towards you but moved away just as quickly.
ââOw am I feeling?â He looked at you again, this time met with your buttering your other slice of toast. âLike Iâve got some celebrating to do.â
Harry chuckled boisterously, clearly amused by what had been said to him over the other end of the line. It was enough to make him successful to catch your gaze once more. âNot quite cracked open the champagne yet, mate no. By the sounds of it think youâre doing that for the two of us.â
He paused, âCareful you donât drink away your managerial cut of the opening weekend, âs only in pre-production.â
With a lick to his lips, Harry looked at you, a soft raise to his eyebrows when he saw the realisation lace your features and your eyes widened over at him. Then his lips smiled in the way that they had before when he mustâve received praise.
Only this time it was you and your admiration that he found himself enjoying.
A small bite down onto his bottom lip let you know he was shying away from feeling his full elation and letting you share in it too. You couldnât stop yourself from removing the napkin from your lap and scrunching it against the dining table as you pushed out of your seat and walked around to him on the opposite side.
Remaining seated, Harry looked up at you as he switched the phone to the opposite side of his face and let your reach for him, encouraging his temple to fall against your stomach.
Fingers wove through his hair, not knowing if it was ever going to be this long again and your lips found the top of his head. Inhaling deeply you pressed a long kiss into his chestnut strands, haphazard but silky regardless of how unkempt he appeared. You whispered your words of congratulations to him so lowly that they were only shared between you whether a third party was still present on the phone.
His arm was wrapped around your waist, anchoring you to him and squeezing gratefully at the curve of your hips as you showered him with kisses.
âCall me later about all thaâ,â he requested, lids hooded from the relaxing touch of your fingers. ââS too early for logistics. âM going.â
Phone tossed to the table, Harry pushed back on his chair creating enough space to encourage you down onto his lap without much fight from you. He appreciated it, aware just as much as you that slow mornings like these were now going to happen no more than a handful of times for the rest of the year.
He embraced the way you fell against him, forehead against his temple and warm breath fanning against his cheek. One hand splayed out against your lower back while the other wrapped up and gently held your head against his.
You wanted him to hold you, just as much as you wanted to hold him. Legs heavy against his thighs and arms tight against the tops of his shoulders as your hands rubbed at the parts of his back that you could get to.
A stillness came over you that was heavy with emotion. Bittersweet.
Breathing deeply you had to let him know just how thrilled you were of all his successes. Lips gently gliding against his dribbled cheek, you found the shell of his ear and whispered, âIf only you knew how fucking proud I am of you.â
His fingers that were buried into your locks, lightly scratched at the back of your head. A softly breathed chuckled omitting from his chest, âHaven't even told you I got it yet. Could be summat rubbish.â
âDonât have to, can just tell,â you commented, pulling away and watching him tilt his head back to look at you with his hooded but shiny eyes and lopsided lips that danced with the softest of smiles.
You stayed quiet for a while as you gently ran your fingers over his features. He let you take your time, doing the same with just his eyes. Taking a breath he spoke in a soft tone, âHowâd you know?â
âLess frowny, less grumpy man-child .â
âHey,â he whined in response, quickly after. Face scrunching with his complaint. You breathed a laugh, leaning down to press a tender kiss to his lips which Harry only deepened. Pleased hum heard when you allowed him to do so.
Breaking your lips, you both lingered looking at each other through blurred vision and a mixture of squashed noses and deep breathing. Once his breath was caught Harry spoke his thanks softly in return.
âDoes this mean said movie can go back onto my Sky Movies list to purchase when it becomes available?â
âAbso-fucking-lutely.â
