2022 YEAR ROUNDUP: FAVORITE MANGA READ IN 2022
Another year of catching up on what I bought for myself the years before, among those (+ some purchases from this year) were:
銀河鉄道の夜 (Night on The Galactic Railroad) by Hiroshi Masumura based on the short story by Kenji Miyazawa [Kaiseisha, hardcover ver]
お父さんは心配症 (Otousan wa Shinpaishou) by Aamin Okada [Shuseisha, bunko ver]
ホット・ロード (Hot Road) by Taku Tsurugi [Shueisha, bunko ver]
鉄風 (Teppu) by Moare Oota [Kodansha]
蒼い柘榴 (Aoi Zakuro) by Riyoko Ikeda [Shueisha, bunko ver]
サプリ (Suppli) by Mari Okazaki [Shodensha]
Shuna’s Journey by Hayao Miyazaki [First Second, trans. Alex Dudok De Wit]
How Do We Relationship? by Tamifull [Viz Media, trans. Abby Lehrke]
This year I was able to read some series I’ve wanted to read for a long time now, like Suppli, Hot Road, and Teppu. All of which are romances to me. Hot Road explore friendship and romance as a vector for personal growth and destruction. And Teppu explores how its kinda gay for you as a girl to want to beat the shit out of another girl (within the rules of the sport).
Then on the recurring topic of toxic families: Otousan wa Shinpaishou is one of the most violent, dysfunctional, and unhinged slapstick gag manga I’ve read and I had a great time!!! Had a more stressful but intrigued time reading Ikeda’s (at the time) contemporary adult dramas, of which there are no words for its very unlike everything else I’ve read by her and left a deep impression.
The more literary experiences were Masumura’s adaption of Night On The Galactic Railroad by Kenji Miyazawa, and Miyazaki’s original Shuna’s Journey (A 2022 release that didn’t fit into the list U_U).  Both has an almost mythical quality to them, Shuna especially as it mainly uses narration over dialogue and is the first Miyazaki work I personally felt pretty moved by. I already talked a bit about Masamura’s adaption in the February roundup so I’ll just say that I don’t know how many Night On The Galactic Railroad adaption I will experience in my lifetime but none of them will feel right if they don’t depict the characters as cats. And How Do We Relationship is like literature to me. It’s just a constant barrage of surprises. I haven’t read anything else that explores the course of two people’s relationship like this before and I’m always looking forward to what will happen in each volume!!

Thoughts on the LOM Anime Episode 11: Teadrop Crystal (Part 1)
Broooooooo I am not ready. NOT AT ALL READY. For this anime to end. But here we are at the final quest, and I'm not sure but next week's episode is probably the last, too, as part 2.
As always link to the episode below:
youtube
And the spoiler warning! Spoilers below for Episode 11 of the Legend of Mana anime, as well as events from the Teadrop Crystal quest of the Jumi Arc in the game.
This one...is seriously long, there's so many things to talk about.
Like I expected, this episode focuses a bit more on Blackpearl, but we get the added bonus of the anime fleshing out the Jumi a lot more - we even get to see Florina's backstory, how she became Clarius, how Blackpearl became her knight, and even a bit more insight into Diana, Rubens, and Sappho too.
So this episode picks up immediately from where episode 10 ended, when Pearl and Elazul warp into Pandora's Box and find Shiloh already there with Florina. This is a major change from the game, because to activate the Teardrop Crystal quest, you first talk to Inspector Boyd, who's worried about where Pearl and Elazul have been up to, and you both go to Geo. It's too bad the anime dropped Inspector Boyd completely after Episode 4, but it also makes sense for the anime to focus more on the actual Jumi characters and not spend more time wandering about.
Anyway, the first half of the episode faithfully recreates the talk between Blackpearl and Florina in the Teardrop Crystal quest, but since the scenes are voice-acted now, it hits much harder. The delivery for Florina's voice is especially great, when she pleads for Pearl to stop trying to shoulder her pain.
This episode also shows a bit of Elazul's past and that he met Blackpearl before she transformed into Pearl - Elazul was in the desert fleeing shadows when she helped him out, and that is when she gave him the Sword of Fate. The anime...doesn't quite explain what those shadows were, though. Monsters? I always assumed Elazul was a lone Jumi fleeing Jumi hunters in the desert, so this was a bit weird to me. but anyway.
Same as in the game, Elazul found Blackpearl again just after Alexandrite injured her core, and she became Pearl in his arms.
You know, I just noticed something - Blackpearl has a singular braid, Pearl has two. It's neat because it could mean 1) Blackpearl is the first personality, Pearl is the 2nd, with the number of braids representing that, or - Blackpearl's single-minded focus is represented in her single braid, while Pearl, confused about her existence, has two braids, representing a sort of division: should she remain as a meek princess, or try to be the next Clarius as Blackpearl intended? These are just my thoughts, though, in the art book, character designer Nao Ikeda simply notes that both Pearl and Blackpearl's hair were intended to invoke the shape of shells to further tie in into their pearl motif - in particular Blackpearl's hair is shaped like a conch shell, did you know that?
Anyway, so everyone finally finds out Alexandrite did betray all the Jumi by kidnapping Florina, injuring Blackpearl, and leaving all other Jumi to die (as well as doing the little murder-fellow-Jumi-for-their-cores business, but tactfully, no one brought that up before Florina).
Here's something, though - the English subs follow the English localization for names (Elazul is still used even if you can hear our Lapis Lazuli Knight called Ruri, and Lisa is still referred to as Lisa in the subs even if the Japanese dialogue calls her Corona). So the English subs calls Alexandrite "Alexandra" and says that is that Jumi's true name. I've been using Alexandrite because I wasn't sure, but this episode confirms that Alexandra is Alex/Sandra's true name and it makes more sense with the aliases they picked.
However, there is another thing that's never been definitely settled about Alexandra.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the game, Alexandra is referred to with she/her, and this seems further supported by the fact that Alexandra refers to her Sandra form as her true one. This makes it seem Alex is more of a disguise rather than a separate persona, to me anyway.
In the manga.. granted, I read a fanlation version as the manga never got a proper English release, but there, Alexandrite's true form is the Alex persona, while Sandra was just a disguise they used.
The anime mixes the two - Alexandra still is the proper, true name, but Alexandra is referred to with he/him pronouns, and the dialogue above used in game? Still the same one, but used with he/him. So I'm guessing from here on out it's better to use he/him or they for Alexandra in the anime, and she/her for Alexandra in the game. Sorry, that might have gotten long, but it's interesting to look at these differences.
Back to the anime, Florina hands the Bejeweled staff to Shiloh to bring them to the Bejeweled City. Here we go again, nosey main protagonist!
Like in the game, Pearl and Elazul discuss who will go to the Bejeweled City but there's better context for it in the anime. In the game, for some reason, Elazul thinks it's too risky to go together to the Bejeweled City with the three of you together...which is really just another way for the game to get around the limitation that you can only bring one NPC companion at a time, by forcing you to pick only one of Elazul and Pearl to come with you. Gameplay limitations aside, story-wise this always felt stupid to me since it left one Jumi a sitting duck for Sandra to kill, which always happens. Whoever you left behind will always becomes the 998th core to be fed to the Lord of Jewels.
In the anime, the more sensible argument they had is that Pearl, as Blackpear, was still Florina's Knight, and she should stay to watch over her in Pandora' Box. Pearl agrees on this, so it's Elazul and Shiloh who go to the Bejeweled City. Oh, that's another difference in the game, btw - for some reason, in the game Florina disappears after all the talk is done and no over ever really explains this. I assumed that either Florina in the Pandora's Box you meet is something like her spirit self, or that Alexandra somehow has a way of retrieving Florina from the box and immediately plopping her back onto the Throne of Clarius.
Anyway, before they go, Elazul warns Shiloh again that he would at danger, but Shiloh basically says "lmao like that's stopped me," but he does have a good personal reason to go, and that's to see Serafina again. Even without any romance, they do have an important bond - for all the terrible things she'd done, Serafina still saved Shiloh from Sandra. She didn't have to do that, and was not obligated to take care of him, but she did, so she's still not a bad person, and Shiloh wants to resolve this matter for her, too.
The second half of the episode is Elazul and Shiloh making their way into the Bejeweled City, and experiencing the memories of the Jumi in the city for themselves. Which also happens in the game, you can find flashbacks in the city, too, but the anime fleshed them out more. Shiloh and Elazul just handwave seeing these flashbacks, and the game doesn't explain either how you see them, lol. I can understand Pearl/Elazul seeing them, maybe it's a resonance in the core thing, but it doesn't explain how Shiloh can see them. If I were to take a guess, though...the Lord of Jewels has been taking in all the magical energy of roughly 1000 Jumi cores, so perhaps his presence is warping the area and making these memories available to all those who enter the vicinity. That's just my guess, though!
So the flashbacks reveal things in chronological order - first, Blackpearl escorted a number of Jumi refugees to the Bejeweled City, meeting Diana in the process. However, it would seem the Empire followed her to the city, so she then becomes one the city's protectors, their strongest knight, even. However, defeating Deathbringer, Blackpearl is gravely injured and nearly dies. Diana, along with Sappho, tries to find a guardian with healing tears, but is unable to. To say a final farewell to the Jumi's hero, the civilians are allowed to meet Blackpearl one last time...only for a common Jumi, Florina, to shed tears, saving Blackpearl's life.
This event is pretty significant, as Sappho points out that Florina, being of Fluorite core, was a common gem, but was able to create Teardrop Crystals. This isn't explained in the anime, but is present in the game, I'm just not if it was clearly explained, or something you have to pick up between dialogues. But basically, Jumi do have a sort of hierarchy. This is implied by the order of gems in Alex's explanation:
Tumblr media
The only ranks that are given names are the Stratum of Clarius, those who sit at the Throne of the Bejeweled City and shed teads for the others, and the Stratum of Lucidia, of which Rubens is part of and so is implied to be a fairly high rank, since he is one of the leaders.
Tumblr media
Stratum/Strata is a fitting name for the rank of Jumi, btw - because strata also refers to layers of rock!
So all that being said, it must have been a shocking thing, Florina becoming Clarius. After Florina assumes her post, Diana then orders the Jumi to go on the offensive and retrieve their fallen brethren from the Deathbringer army. However, the constant creation of Teardrop Crystals causes Florina to collapse, angering one of her knights, Alexandra. Florina's declining health is also a cause of anxiety for the civilians, who demand for more guardians/princesses who can cry. Blackpearl and Diana try to look for other solutions, and Florina tells them about the Mana Sword, which may be able to cause a miracle with its sacred power. Blackpearl volunteers for the task, suggesting they make it look like she was exiled for violence against the guardians to pacify the populace, to which Diana and Florina reluctantly agree to do. Blackpear makes Alexandra Florina's new knight...which backfires on all of them when Alexandra kidnaps Florina. Rubens goes to find Blackpearl and warn her, with Sappho and Esmeralda's sisters volunteering as well. However, since Sappho is looking after other guardians with the danger from angered civilians, the older Lucky Clover sisters are the ones who try to find more about the Mana Sword. Rubens and Sappho encourages Esmeralda despite this, but it all comes to naught as Florina isn't found, Blackpearl fails to return, the Jumi leave the city en masse, the Lucky Clover among them, and Diana turns into stone, making Rubens despair.
Fun times for all...
It's terribly tragic, seeing the fall of the Jumi play out. This episode clears up, more than ever, how sympathetic everyone is and that they all tried to look out for each other, Diana especially, since she was a bit more ambiguous in the manga and the game. But, so consumed by anger he directed towards his fellow Jumi, Alexandra took it all away if only to save Florina. This arc is so beautifully written, and the anime does it great justice.
Now who's ready to turn to stone for the final episode? I know I am. I'm going to ugly cry a heap of teardrop crystals, even.

DVHS Reread: Chapter III.IV
"But if you think about it, isn't the timing too perfect?" I ask, trying not to look over at Fujimoto. It feels odd to be arguing about this when he's on the ground right next to me.
I 100% forgot I had Monokuma just leave him there. That’s so cruel.
"Well, you know what they say about assuming: it makes an ass out of you and me." Yoshida's eyes light up a bit at her own joke. "But yeah, what did he even use? We didn't find anything in his room."
I heard that saying for the first time in 11th grade, around when I started writing this, I think. Or maybe it was the next year I started? Time is an illusion.
"We can't go off of just that," Ikeda says after a second passes. "I've read that artists sometimes produce their most happy work when they're depressed and vice versa. Everything else points to him killing himself, and we're supposed to take the word of contextless lyrics?"
This came from a treasury of Pearls Before Swine comics with commentary by the creator, Stephan Pastis. He mentioned that some of his darker strips were drafted during happy points in his life.
"I did," Oshiro and I say at the same time. Which helps no one. We wedged into the doorway at the same time, so I guess there's no telling if we were the third and fourth people or the second and third.
I always find it confusing how the BDA rule of three is only in certain cases, so it’s easier to just have four when one of the first ones there could be the blackened.
"Just listen! Strangling is often done with rope-like objects, right? Using a thin wire like a guitar string would not have the same effect. It would cut into her neck, causing her to bleed out. The cause of death in that case would be called garroting." Yasu shifts so he's facing me. "Ishikawa, I told you before that there was nothing that could be the murder weapon in the storage. There was a wire tool that's used to cut clay in the storage drawer, but what I said was true: the cause of death would not be strangling like the file said if the wire tool was used."
I got this both from my mom and logic from Alex from Magnus Chase. Garroting and strangling are two different causes of death. My mom confirmed that using a guitar string would probably have the former cause of death rather than the latter. Which isn’t a sus thing for her to know, she’s a murder mystery fan, too, which is why I read this to her.
She turns to me, unnerving me with her vacant look. It's like she's possessed or something.
I love Oshiro
Ikeda shakes his head, his arms folded. "Isn't that a flimsy argument? There's nothing more that ties me to the crime scene other than speculation and thin arguments."
So true bestie it’s because I have a hard time making conclusive evidence.
What is she doing? That wasn't what he had at all. I would've known; eucalyptus is one of the only essential oils I can't stand. Not that anyone else checked the water. "Ishikawa, didn't you say it was lavender?" Ikeda checks. "I don't have lavender oil in my room."
It clicks when Yoshida smirks at me, victory in her eyes. "I never said it was lavender," I tell him slowly. "Apart from eucalyptus, I don't think I could've placed the scent accurately."
Noooooooo Saito said last chapter it was lavender I screwed myself over with this! Gosh darn it!
Oshiro shifts a little to the side, away from him. "Buuuuut we know that they were killed by the same person, and that that oil has something to do with it. And you were the one who slipped up. A frogleg slip!"
Abe coughs. "Freudian slip."
I. LOVE. OSHIRO.
"Is that it? Are we done?" Yasu asks, his voice somewhat strained. He's swaying a little on his feet. If I look hard, his skin looks a palish green.
~Foreshadowing~
"There wasn't-" I gasp. I was hallucinating Miyuki in there. So when Miyuki- the hallucination- said that she would stay there, she saved me. I talked to her and Ikeda thought I was talking to someone else, maybe Hamasaki or Fujimoto.
If I hadn't hallucinated, I would be dead now.
Idk there’s just something I love about that.
The more needles Monokuma puts in, the further in they go. A few of them draw blood; Ikeda goes pale at the sight. Is he going to bleed out?
Callback to that Ikeda does not like blood, hence why he carried out the first technically bloodless murder in DVHS. Also I think I said before he’s not the biggest fan of needles, either.
As if on cue, the PA sparks on. "It's- okay! Almost- hang- right!" The voice mutters, impossible to make out, then a different voice, another feminine one, takes over. "-hear us? -calm- get out-"
This broadcast is the first real clue into who’s there, since you now know it’s two girls.
"We'll stop it," I hear Yoshida assure Oshiro softly. It's the quietest I've heard her. She has her arm around Oshiro's shoulders, comforting. "I promise, okay?"
I am so sorry to all Oshiro fans because that promise, as you know, will not last long.
Yasu feels almost feverish below me. I sweep his hair out of his eyes gently. With how panicked Sasaki was before leaving, I can't help but wonder if we're going to be losing another friend today.
This was always planned for the end of this chapter. I figured this specific event would have a higher sense of urgency between updates more than post-trials usually have.

Return to Shirogasu Island
I have been watching My friend stream this game lately, and it is like, the definition of a Hidden gem
the best way I can describe it, so far, is that it's kinda like Danganronpa put into a more ‘traditional’ Whodunnit plot, and if the 'Worst Boi'(The Byakuya or Nagito type, namely the former) was the Protagonist, it follows a detective who goes undercover investigating the death/supposed suicide of a wealthy man, going the Island which the man had been invited too. Meeting several other guests with there own sorts of Quirks, before a Guest ends up dying there and thus this has to be investigated as well.  I think that is the most I can say on the actual plot without delving mildly into spoilers.
The Detective is an Asshole and is oh so Hilarious for it, he has several insulting bits of narration, its nonchalantly dropped that he has ties to the Mafia, he is like, so horrible and the Banter he has with the character Neneko(Who acts...A Lot like Toko from DR srsly it's almost like she wrote this) is great. There is also a young girl named Aurora I think who he actually ends up being really sweet towards, which results in a Dynamic like, as Austa put it comparing him with Aurora to him with everyone else
Tumblr media
I have not finished the Game, so this is not really a Full review, but it is great so far and my Friend who has gone further said the rest is good too. Its funny, charming, has an interesting and entertaining story and Characters, and it is so damn underrated it does not even have a tv tropes page, seriously give this damn game more love

My Personal Library
I have been thinking of keeping only the books that I really like and plan to reread on my shelves. Make it look more me, you know (such a cliche). I realized that I still have a lot of books to read and some to get rid off. Because of this I decided to make a list to get updated of books I want to keep.

In Praise of Actors Who Narrate Audiobooks
Tumblr media
I had read the All Souls Trilogy several years ago. After the ADoW TV show came out in the States, I decided to buy the Audible audiobooks to reacquaint myself with the series.
I love listening to these audiobooks. I’ve finished listening to the entire series but I couldn’t let the All Souls Trilogy universe go just yet, so I’m listening to The Book of Life again as read by Jennifer Ikeda.
Tumblr media
I have enjoyed many audiobook performances before, in particular Davina Porter reading the Outlander series, Roy Dotrice reading The Song of Ice and Fire series and Jim Dale reading the Harry Potter series.
I’m always amazed that these narrators can switch voices so seamlessly. It is hard enough for an actor to get into one character, much less a whole range of characters. Apparently it can take up to a month to finish recording a book. It sounds like a pretty grueling process from the description by Michele Debczak in a 05.04.18 Mental Floss article entitled 17 Secrets of Audiobook Narrators:
Tumblr media
Jennifer Ikeda did an exceptional job in that she seamlessly switched voices. What particularly amazed me were her male voices were very convincing. (I think that female narrators who are altos may have an easier time lowering their voices to a male range than male narrators have trying to imitate female voices.) As far as I could tell, she also was spot on with the various accents, including Hamish’s Scottish burr.
Jennifer recorded the first book in the series in 2011 and the last book in 2014 but I swear she sounds very much like Matthew Goode when she voices Matthew Clairmont, Teresa Palmer when she does Diana Bishop and Alex Kingston when she reads Sarah Bishop. It is uncanny that she chose the voices she did for those characters.
Anyway, for those of you who have listened to the All Souls Trilogy audiobooks, here is Jennifer Ikeda’s biography from IMDb:

LGBTQ+ Book List
I work in a library, and I’m pretty good at finding LGBT+ books. My boyfriend @another-broken-heart-cafe , who works with me, has also found quite a few. I finally decided to make an organized list of those and any others I could think of for anyone who’s looking for these kinds of books. I’ve sorted them the best I can and separated them to make what you want as easy to find as possible. There is an adult category, a teen/YA category, and a child category. I’ve read a few of these, but not many, so there’s probably going to be mistakes. I looked up every individual book to organize them the best I could (which took a while because this list currently has 140 books, if I counted correctly). If you find a mistake, just let me know and I’ll fix it in the next update. I plan to make updates occasionally as I find more. Feel free to add on any LGBT+ books you want!
