Inside the office of Fumito Ueda

This is a sequel of sorts to a post of mine from last year where I spotted a number of telling items on Fumito Ueda's office shelves, while more closely inspecting a picture from the Material Book included with the Japanese First Limited Edition of Hitokui no Ōwashi Trico. I'm calling this harmless voyeurism, coming as it does from someone who is exceedingly interested in this author and his work and appreciates the difficulty of such self-imposed challenges.

This new post will be looking more carefully at a this page size picture from The World of Fumito Ueda, a book Kadokawa released earlier this year, from which some detail can be extracted. The photo is stylized with a checkered transparency which makes this exercise substantially more difficult. Should you recognize any item I failed to identify, I ask that you use the comment box so I may improve this entry.

This is a rather pristine-looking 1976 Nintendo Kôsenjû Duck Hunt, a sophisticated light gun toy from Yokoi's R&D department consisting of a battery-powered projector and a plastic rifle whose objective was for the player to shoot at the duck whenever it appeared on the wall.

To the left is Nintendo's Custom Gunman toy, also designed by Gunpei Yokoi in 1976, consisting of a plastic cowboy figure with a receptor in its chest at which the player needed to aim with precision in order to score.

I remember reading about these in Gorges' L'Histoire de Nintendo. Both may have been toys that Ueda had as a child, but this is mere speculation from my end.

Two PSP games stored on this shelf: Metal Gear Acid (2004) and Lemmings (2006), a remake of a game which was highly influential to him, as he as indicated on multiple occasions. In the previous post I wrote, I spotted a big box copy of the original game.

An unexpected find here: a DVD entitled The Animal Motion Show, a visual library meant as reference for artists containing thousands of video clips animals in motion, no doubt very useful in key framing Toriko's unique animations.

A pair of books stand out to me and confirm many of my long-held suspicions on Ueda's influences: Hyperion's From Myst to Riven hardcover from 1997; and the 1974 Dover Publications' Doré Bible Illustrations.

The US and European versions of Shadow of the Colossus sitting beside Saints Seinaru Mamono, the Japanese edition of the Sony Cambridge Studio 2004 game, Primal.

More books, including the 2014 volume The Birth of Rockin' Jelly Beans. If you are not familiar with this reference, he is a Japanese lowbrow erotica artist who wears a mask in public appearances and whose identity remains unknown to this day.

Tucked in a lower shelf are the Gameboy Color edition of Prince of Persia, the Japanese version of Abe's Exodus (ABE '99) for the Playstation and the Wonderswan version of Toshio Iwai's Tenori-On.

Last but not least, here is the the Limited Run Games Limited 20th Anniversary Edition of Another World (either the PS4 or the PSVita edition, it's impossible to tell).

The mental image of Monokuma wiggles…

Scrambled secrets, huh? Okay, let me guess everyone’s.

Yasu: If Monokuma’s following the FF = bad thing, then probably of them being a FF agent. Or maybe just their true talent.

Abe: His tragic (Nagisa-style?) backstory. Or maybe “abe fumito knows the identity of the mastermind.”

Oshiro: Something relating to why she’s like that? Either her scary side, or her jacket.

Camila: I got nothing.

Saito: Her tragic backstory (relating to her dad).

Nakamura: …He’s lying about his talent?

“Even funnier, two bits of hair stick out on either side until he smooths them back down.” Okay, seriously, is this far enough into the future that Nagisa did grow up? Are the sisters…Toko and Komaru or something?

Wait. That was a joke, but I think I’m right. Now, the question is why he’d be here…

I really love their dynamic, though. A lot.

At the end of the second curtain, we are having a lots of water at the end, but I did not participate in that "water splashing" too much. (laughs) There were quite a few days when (Miyake) Ken-kun was fully aiming at me, but I had Abe as a shield. I think that position is made up to be useful, but it would be a nuisance to Abe. (laughs) If there is such a scene this year, I think that I am willing to go on the water on my own.

I love the scariness of roller coasters (or jet coasters) and it makes me laugh a lot when I get on it, it’s funny. (laughs) During this time as well, I and Miyata (Toshiya)-kun went for a ride with Yamamoto Ryota, Miyachika (Kaito), Nakamura Kaito and Inaba (Hikaru)-kun, but because I was laughing with 「Yeah!」 and I had already hit my hands. (laughs) And Miyata-kun who’s next to me thinks that I am really noisy. (laughs) Also, when I got my license, Miyachika and I went for a drive to a safari park and I said 「hora, a lion!」, Miyachika was laughing even though he thought I was concentrating on driving, I said 「I’m sorry I am not so loud」. So, we say it is as a reflection point but, because we had a lot of things to do, there were too many performances to do. . . I am not satisfied; I want to go on more! I want to raise the quality, but since it is overall, it is difficult to concretely list all those things that I want to improve~. It is during the second part/curtain, I had left without a microphone. A female dancer, who serves at a tea house, got me a microphone on the way in the middle of the tray, so I could receive it with and I gestured 「Thank you, this should be my work〜」 and I will never detach it ever again . . . ! By the way my mother came to see me that day. 「I heard the words properly」 and having to say that I thought that families are generous too. (laughs)

Recently I often spend time with Sanada (Yuma) of Love-tune and Sakuma, I’m laughing a lot with mistakes of these two and also hearing their mistakes really makes me laugh a lot. During the rehearsal of 「JOHNNY’S ALL STARS ISLAND」 the drum teacher said 「better than before」, 「you became better than before」 and Sakuma said 「e? mirabakesso?」 and I made a mistake. (laughs) Meanwhile, Sanada-kun wanted to talk about the movie 「Kirishima, Bukatsu Yamerutteyo」 but what he said is 「Kirishima, Bukatsu Yamerundatte」. Sanada-kun has a lot of inputs, but it seems that he usually doesn’t remember. (laughs)

Thoughts when you see the 2016 「Takizawa Kabuki」

I originally liked a stage with a sword, and it was my second time last year to see “Takizawa Kabuki”, I thought that I wanted to get in there from the first time I saw it. From the last year’s play, it was clearly visible that everyone was responsible for their selves and then I’ve got a feeling that I wanted to go out there and became stronger. And just as I’ve thought, Fukka (Fukasawa) got a female role? I can’t loose with the laughter because I’m from Kansai.

Meccha gera. Why are we laughing even if it is not a big deal? Recently, my friend who went to the party club together, and then he suddenly jumped into a pool that is used only in summer. It’s pretty dirty and what I did is put up some ice and sent it to him. Then, when I was in the midst of grilling some meat, he said 「 tobima—su 」in the pan. (laughs) After that, he went to take a bath while saying 「samui~ samui~ 」 (laughs)

The funniest story recently

Being able to keep a dog! Although I always wanted to keep a dog, I still can’t get my family’s permission. I even remodeled my room so that I can secure it to a place. There’s a house nearby that has three dogs and whenever I pass by, I see heads popping out of the fence and goes 「 wanwan！」 and I have always responded 「nani nani？」 out loud. Although I have not kept it yet, I go to a pet shop, search for gauges and pet foods, etc. and I laugh whenever I’m doing it. (laughs)

I played the role of a girl, but when I got accustomed, Takizawa (Hideaki)-kun told me that “Isn’t it a like a man today” and I was told that looseness came out. Besides, I wonder if I can have more inner thighs, and besides that there are many things to think about like “You should have been able to respond more ad lib”. I guess the parent has something to do with the ignorance, do not be afraid to be hit in the face! I thought that I was real, professional consciousness was missing and I am reflecting!

During “JOHNNY’S ALL STARS ISLAND” (’16 ~’17), (Morimoto) Shintaro announced that “SixTONES and Snow Man, let's do New Year's present games". 12 people gave presents and gathered at SixTONES' dressing room. I had laughed a lot anyway whether Shintaro thought about making arrangements on how to entertaining everyone or not. First of all, I pulled a number but that number isn’t for the present; it looks like it is the turn to the next one to turn the roulette. (laughs) We all laughed and I’ve become relaxed.

The second act has changed from tragedy to comedy; there are things that have been done differently than usual following the mellowness of the scene. It is necessary to listen to the dialogue of the person who is talking even in the scenes without lines although that would be unnecessary for the eyes of the audience. As I added it day by day, I don’t even remember having it negatively this year. Yes, I sad very cold yet nice things! (laughs)

There are some people who say that it hurts my throat, although there are some people that says「it is a proof that you’re doing your best」, I think that I should refrain from doing it after all that I put it out on the stage. The kabuki performance; from around 2 years ago, I thought that maybe I could become a bridge between Japan’s traditional arts and the present age in the future. Specifically, I haven’t reconsidered it but, I want to be more particular in manners and the forms.

Because I rarely smile (laughs), it’s difficult. I went to a meal together with Kawai (Fumito)-kun and Nozawa (Yuki) I felt like I laughed a lot but I don’t remember why. (laughs) Ah, I walked down the street two days ago and I have encountered Inoo (Kei)-kun at a location shooting laughing and I laughed when I heard him go 「 fufu 」 , he was laughing silently. Although it’s all about it (laughs) and even though I think it is funny, I think it has nothing to do with laughter. Although I often laugh even after seeing a comedy program, it’s about laughter after all (laughs)

When I’ve read again the script for the scene 「 Kaidan Yuki Onna 」 which I’ve done least year, I’ve found a line that says “I wish I could have done this here a little more”. I’ve thought of the feelings of the snow woman and I guess there’s a pattern of different expressions on the script. I don’t know yet if there’ll be a scene like that this year but, I want to make use of the reflections that I have now.

When Satsuki (Fukazawa) suddenly called me「 Hayashi 」by chance. (laughs) It has been the usual 「 Hayashi-kun 」 for a very long time, but now it has become 「 Hayashi 」. But today, it was 「 Hayashi 」 so I didn’t say anything; it was a「 good job 」 that’s what I’ve thought in my mind. (laughs) Now, I have been called 「 Hayashi 」by my kouhai Fukka, it looks like that he is a senpai and he is a nice guy that gives e-mail on a birthday. (laughs)

Dawn to Dusk:

Oshiro (leader), Matsumoto, Ikeda, and Saito

They focus a lot on composition more than anything else, and a lot of their music is said to be best played at night. That’s usually when they have the most time to work on it, too. They don’t really fit in any one genre, though, dipping their toes into everything.

Rin and Len would be their Vocaloids since I think it’d be a funny contrast between them arguing and Oshiro and Saito arguing.

Worldwide:

Ishikawa (leader), Nakamura, Yoshida, and Maeda

This group would probably focus on multilingual songs of all kinds, blending together different styles. Ishikawa of course knows lots of languages, Nakamura knows a bit of other languages, Yoshida’s just fun, and Maeda knows Russian!

Luka is their Vocaloid, since she’s known for being bilingual. I also think she would contribute to their chaos nicely.

Blossoming:

Hamasaki (leader), Fujimoto, Yasu, and Sasaki

They’re kind of like a traditional band like Leo/need, though a lot of their music is more calming. Fujimoto’s great with writing meaningful lyrics, though he doesn’t actually play with the rest of them. Hamasaki plays guitar, Yasu’s on percussion, and Sasaki’s on keyboard. All three of them trade off vocals.

Meiko is their Vocaloid, I think mostly because I associate these four with being more mature/older sibling-figures, kind of like how I think about Meiko.

On Your Feet:

Ueda (leader), Rikimaru, Abe, and Aoyama

They’re slightly more pop-focused, kind of in the realm of dance music. It’s surprising that Abe and Aoyama are part of the group in that regard, but the four of them work incredibly well together (barring some small bickering here and there).

Kaito is their Vocaloid, and I think he’d cycle between being a sort of mediator and contributing to their excellent vibes, haha.

The Living Legend Rei Kawakubo.

Avant Garde designer, Creative Director, Entrepreneur, Mentor, Fashion Anarchist are just some of the labels given to Rei Kawakubo. But just like categorizing Comme des Garçons under a certain aesthetic, to label Rei Kawakubo as one thing just simply feels wrong Rei Kawakubo, with a background in Arts and Literature and none in fashion design. Rei Kawakubo started off her career in the advertising department under Asahi Kasei a textile manufacturer and then went on to be a freelance stylist. Where she would make garments for her shoots due to the lack of what was available. This then resulted in the birth of Comme des Garçons in 1969 followed by the first Tokyo Boutique in 1975 and a Paris Debut in 1981. Usually seen as a fashion rebel Rei Kawakubo has a cult following of Anti Fashion fans that were known as “The Crows”. She was always unafraid to push boundaries, disregard trends and challenge the status quo. Having her first few collections in all black, using deconstructed looks and even having garments that distort the human figure as seen in the S/S 97 Collection. These collections often challenge people’s idea of beauty.

The amount of influence Rei Kawakubo has is extensive. Having an impact in many respectable designers. From her proteges that have labels under the Comme des Garçons group such as Jun Takahasi, Fumito Ganryu, Kei Ninomiya to proteges that started their own labels such as Chitose Abe of Sacai. Even designers such as Martin Margela and Helmut Lang have credited her as an influence to their careers. Rei Kawakubo has also manage to stay relevant with current times having a multitude of lines known as the “Comme Universe” making the brand much more accessible to the masses, as well as the opening of Dover Street Market a multi brand store that is curated to compliment CDG. Along with the large amount of collaborations with the CDG label ranging from Supreme to Pharrel to H&M. With an extensive repertoire under her belt, she has recently clinched the Isamu Noguchi Award making her the first ever fashion designer to do so. With all of these being said Rei Kawakubo is undoubtedly a Legend of out time.
