I know Fusion decided to do Bandori (DVHS edition) a while back, so could we have a followup? PJSK: DVHS! Four-person units plus a Vocaloid for each, featuring "you shouldn't technically be here" this time. - II
...I definitely didn't spend twenty minutes looking for this post
Dawn to Dusk:
Oshiro (leader), Matsumoto, Ikeda, and Saito
They focus a lot on composition more than anything else, and a lot of their music is said to be best played at night. That’s usually when they have the most time to work on it, too. They don’t really fit in any one genre, though, dipping their toes into everything.
Rin and Len would be their Vocaloids since I think it’d be a funny contrast between them arguing and Oshiro and Saito arguing.
Worldwide:
Ishikawa (leader), Nakamura, Yoshida, and Maeda
This group would probably focus on multilingual songs of all kinds, blending together different styles. Ishikawa of course knows lots of languages, Nakamura knows a bit of other languages, Yoshida’s just fun, and Maeda knows Russian!
Luka is their Vocaloid, since she’s known for being bilingual. I also think she would contribute to their chaos nicely.
Blossoming:
Hamasaki (leader), Fujimoto, Yasu, and Sasaki
They’re kind of like a traditional band like Leo/need, though a lot of their music is more calming. Fujimoto’s great with writing meaningful lyrics, though he doesn’t actually play with the rest of them. Hamasaki plays guitar, Yasu’s on percussion, and Sasaki’s on keyboard. All three of them trade off vocals.
Meiko is their Vocaloid, I think mostly because I associate these four with being more mature/older sibling-figures, kind of like how I think about Meiko.
On Your Feet:
Ueda (leader), Rikimaru, Abe, and Aoyama
They’re slightly more pop-focused, kind of in the realm of dance music. It’s surprising that Abe and Aoyama are part of the group in that regard, but the four of them work incredibly well together (barring some small bickering here and there).
Kaito is their Vocaloid, and I think he’d cycle between being a sort of mediator and contributing to their excellent vibes, haha.

Before obtaining a book deal with Kodansha in 2004, Miyuke Miyabe’s novel adaptation of ICO, entitled ‘Kiri no Shiro’ (Castle in the Mist), was first published as a weekly serial on the Shūkan Gendai magazine between May 2002 and May 2003. For the occasion, Miyabe teamed up with preeminent illustrator and long time collaborator Shinsaku Fujita, whose artworks adorned the covers of most her every book.
Because Miyabe took certain liberties when deviating from the original story and concept, Fujita’s illustrations do reveal a host of characters and events finding no parallel with the game experience itself. Other drawings produce highly evocative reproductions of some its most emblematic moments, demonstrating not only firsthand knowledge but a veritable affinity for Fumito Ueda’s debut work. Departing from his habitual style, quite possibly due to ICO finding its own references within ancient and contemporary Italian art, the presence of the Italian renaissance masters is strongly felt in each of the seventy illustrations he created. It is fascinating how the artist restructures elements of the story to fit the period’s composition of prevalent religious icons, such as the Madonna and the Child or the Dead Christ. Together, they display an extraordinary reverence for Masaccio, Mantegna, Titian and Botticelli, to mention only a few.
Fujita earned a reputation in Japan for illustrating a variety of book editions, most notably the Japanese translations of Stephen King’s and Dean Koontz’s horror paperbacks. He also famously produced the artwork for a special edition of Edogawa Ranpo’s popular sleuth novel series ‘The Boy Detectives Club’. Japanese horror game enthusiasts will recognize his brushstroke from the original Siren game cover art, as well as that of Famitsu’s ‘Silent Hill Perfect Navigation Book’. Perhaps an even lesser known fact is that Fujita also created spellbinding cover for the 2001 Playstation edition of Yoshitaka Nishida’s RPG maker cult classic, ‘Palette: Forget me Not'.
Because these illustrations were a requirement that needed to be met for the publishing of a novel in Kodansha’s Modern Weekly magazine, as is quite customary in the case of such serializations, they were never again featured in any of the different editions of Miyabe’s book. If I am allowed a personal closing remark, I must say that I was astounded to find no mention whatsoever of these works anywhere online, even in dedicated wikis. I lived all these years assuming someone else from among the ever-inquisitive community had picked this up - apparently, that was not the case. Two decades too late, I nevertheless uploaded the complete gallery of illustrations to a Flickr album for your perusal.

The novelization of ICO by Miyuki Miyabe is blowing my entire face clean off - and it was translated by Ivalice's very own Alexander O. Smith too so it's indulgent even in prose, god

In the sacrifice room, there are 53 standing coffins, the 54th being knocked over at the start of the game. In congruency with this fact, there are 53 shadows that you fight in this same room at the end of the game. It's a safe assumption that these are all the shadows The Queen has at her disposal and they all come from the sacrificed children.
A horrific but often overlooked fact can be paired with this observation: In the game's manual, it is stated that horned children are born once per generation. That's an indefinite space between 20-30 years, but we'll average it and say 25. Ico is the 54th child, so 54 generations have passed since the planning for The Queen's dark ritual began. 25 * 54 = 1,350 years But hold on, The Queen definitely seems to know a lot about this process, with an assuredness that hints at personal experience. It's very possible that this has been done before. Which would make it approximately 2,700 years that the tradition of sacrificing horned children has carried on. For reference, our earliest coherent historic texts date back to about 2600 BCE. Approximately 4,623 years ago. From a certain perspective, we have about 4,623 years of historical documentation. 2,700 years is over half of that. And I only know that much because I have Wikipedia, imagine living in this time period! There's a good chance, even if The Queen only attempted this ritual once, that the process of doing it has consumed most of humanity's recorded history... and 99.9% of all people do not have access to the earliest historic records. The line "Do not be angry with us, this is for the good of the village." is given a strange weight when considering this. Not only has that man probably carried out this exact same task ~25 years ago, not only has he heard about this process since he was a boy, he has also accepted that, from a limited human perspective, this has been happening since the dawn of time.
Interesting topic!
Adding to this horrific fact, we all know that in the universe of the games, Ico is considered a spiritual successor of Shadow. As far as the little lore we have allows us, we can kinda agree that Wander was the very first horned kid, but those were not the first humans to be sacrificed in that universe, like Mono for having a "cursed fate", and the chosen ones in the world of The Last Guardian, who were taken away. Much like in Ico, it seems that people are familiar with it enough that pretty much no one interferes (save for, you know, WANDER.) A thousand years is a long time for people to sit with this knowledge and to reflect on it, but they seem to not question the natural order of things and just let them happen, like you said. In a section of the special symposium that the team did for The Last Guardian, Ueda actually answers a question related to this:
Q: "When the boy was abducted by the eagle, the village leader didn’t seem that sad, he looked like he had given up to some extent. If he truthfully didn’t want the kids to be kidnapped, then it seems a bit strange that he had them sleep all gathered together."
A: "For the whole village, it might not have been thought of as something to be avoided – they thought of it as destiny. It was like being “The Chosen One”. (read the full interview here)"
So yes... when they said "this is for the good of the village," maybe they really believed it to be true, and perhaps they also feared the consequences of not doing it. There is also a scene in Castle in the Mist (Miyuki Miyabe's wonderful novelization of Ico) where the theme of the queen's guards is discussed. In the story, one of the guards who accompanies Ico to the castle seems to pity him and acts compassionate, unlike the other one, who just seems to go along and follow the orders he's been given. It is an unspoken truth, and no one questions it.
One thing I wonder about this subject: are the enemies in Ico really part of the sacrificed kids? Or are they some sort of "imitation" that the Queen creates with her magic, weird and gnarly as they look? Guess we'll never know!
(Tagging @sparkylurkdragon on this one cause I feel like this little piece of horrific trivia might come in handy for their amazing fanfiction on immortal Wander and his journey since SOTC)

Malevolent Spirits: Mononogatari unveiled trailer and release date
Tumblr media
Malevolent Spirits: Mononogatari is one of the highly anticipated anime releases this year. And we are here to give you its release date and its summary. But before that, don't you want to know about Monogatari?  I am sure this is not the first time you've heard about this anime series — although I never watched it because it's so confusing, and at the same time, the art style is something that a lot of beginner anime fans are unfamiliar with. Nevertheless, you can check out our Monogatari watch order guide to get started with the anime series.
Malevolent Spirits: Mononogatari trailer and release date
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YajwcRb4ifg The series will air in Japan on January 10th, 2023, on channels such as Tokyo MX, BS11 and other media. But other than in Japan, you can stream the series in English subtitles on the popular streaming platform name Crunchyroll. And recently, a new trailer for anime is also unveiled with lots of action and dark spirit revolving around the plot.
Malevolent Spirits: Mononogatari plot
The series revolves around the spirits crossing over and entering the human world. They possess old objects and can gain a physical form called tsukumogami.  Tsukumogami are gentle, violent, or assumed to be both. But the clan of Saenome helps spirits return to their world without any conflicts. Kunato Hyouma is also a clan member but needs to work peacefully.  Because he hates them, in the past, one of the tsukumogami had robbed him, which was very precious to him. Because Hyouma has a hatred for the spirit and handles them harshly, his grandfather sends him to Kyoto to avoid any catastrophes in dealing with these spirits that will lead to supernatural disasters.  But he was not alone as Nagatsuki Botan was also sent to live with him as she treated Tsukumogami as its own family.
Malevolent Spirits: Mononogatari staff members
Takeo Ootsuka is a voice actor for the main protagonist Hyouma Kunato; Yuuki Takada is a voice actor for Botan Nagatsuki; Chikahiro Kobayashi is a voice actor for Nagi; Reina Ueda is a voice actor for Yuu, Aimi Tanaka is a voice actor for Kagami, Yoshiki Nakajima is a voice actor for Suzuri, and Miyuki Sawashiro is a voice actor for Haori.   Other staff includes Ryuuichi Kimura is the series director, Takahiro Okawa is an assistant director, Keiichirou Oochi is a series screenwriter, Shiori Fujisawa is the leading character designer, and Yuuka Shiga is a sub-character designer for the series. Aya e a Bruxa
Tumblr media

The picture of Fumito Ueda at his office in 2014 comes from the 'Material Book' included in the 'Hitokui no Ōwashi Trico First Limited Edition'. I've browsed this booklet a few times in the past but I failed to notice some of its interesting details. As you can see in the top left corner of his Kallax shelves, Ueda keeps an Atari Lynx, as well as what appears to be a Game Gear. On the right, there is a big box copy of Psygnosis' 1991 game 'Lemmings', which is consistent with what we know of his younger self's gaming preferences as an admitted Amiga user. And, as would be expected, he keeps his own game-related books at the bottom left, where I can discern the 'Wanda to Kyozou' artbook as well as the Kodansha's original edition of Miyuki Miyabe's novel 'Ico Castle in the Mist'. There's also a Star Wars book, of course.
