Cold Comfort
Forty-eight hours.
They always said that when someone went missing, the first forty-eight hours were the most crucial.  Each hour that passed decreased the chances of the person being found.  Each hour that passed, the further she got from him.
Tony wearily lifted his eyes to the clock on the screen.  Forty-eight hours and eleven minutes since he saw the time on his phone when he ended the call with Rogers, then dismantled it.  Not long now until it would be forty-eight hours since she’d been taken.  It couldn’t have been more than an hour that they’d spent in the forest, keeping each other warm.  The last moments he’d been able to keep her safe.  The last moments he’d had her by his side.
His hand clenched around the empty air at the memory of holding hers.  Slick with sweat, he’d held her hand so tightly that he worried he’d been hurting her.  He wasn’t.  Not as much as when he had let go.  When he had told her to run and not look back.
His head dropped back down, forehead against the forearm he had resting on the desk.  Not a single lead.  Not even a close-but-not-quite match from Jarvis.  All he had to work with was the fucking good word of Romanoff that she’d received a text from Fury saying Evelyn was alright, for whatever that was worth.
The sound of something being set down on the desk beside him stole his attention from his defeatism.  Just enough to make him press his forehead into his arm as he took a deep breath.
“What.”
“Brought you something to eat.  And thought you’d want to know that Romanoff just left Fury’s office.  She’ll be in touch once the box is on its way to Evelyn.”
Tony’s head shot up, and he pushed his chair back, rolling effortlessly away from the desk.  This was his chance.  He’d follow the package to Ev.  He’d steal her back.
“She won’t know which agent has it or where they’re going.  Neither will you.”
Tony stood with a smirk.  “But I snuck a tracker in it.”
“You really expect Fury not to think of that?” he asked with a frown.
“Worth a try.”  A half-hearted shrug, a huffed out sigh, and then, “If it leaves DC, I’ll be right behind it.”
“And if it doesn’t?”
Tony’s gaze wavered before looking away.  “I don’t know.”
Ward made his way to the Cage with a breakfast tray and more coffee for the insatiable Miss Abel.  What in the hell did that woman think she was doing?  Forcing herself to stay awake for days.  Days!  This should have been over by now; she was just an average civilian, Tony Stark’s latest floozy keeping his bed warm.
But as far as he could tell, she certainly wasn’t the vapid, blonde, airhead he’d been anticipating.  He’d expected her to crack immediately, melting into a puddle of admission the moment the cuffs hit her wrists.  If not then, when she saw the interrogation room.  He thought they’d have her figured out before dinner that night and on the way to the Sandbox the next morning for further study.
But no.  Instead, he got Evelyn Abel.  Blonde, yes.  Vapid, no.  He knew better than to let preconceived judgments sway his thoughts on the matter, but considering Stark’s history…  This should have been easy.  And the way she looked at him, the way she talked about him…
He sighed as he approached the door.  Something had to give--soon.  He balanced the coffee on the tray, opening the door carefully.  The woman before him was a shadow of the person she’d been just days before.  She didn’t lift her eyes to him, she rarely did, but the dark, hollow circles below them were obvious from a mile away.  She sat with her elbows on the table, head propped against her hands as her face pressed against them, and she was holding her eyelids open.
His eyebrows met in confusion.  She was physically holding her eyelids open with her thumbs and forefingers.  That girl needed more than coffee; she needed to be in a psych ward.
“Morning,” he said, setting the tray down beside her; she flinched less the further his interactions were from her.  If he was going to make nice, if he was going to get this “easy” mission over with, he needed to handle her with kid gloves.
As usual, she kept her eyes on the table.  He sat across from her, knowing she would roll her eyes and avert her gaze before she did it.  She was resolute in her actions, and they were predictable.
“Rough night?”
Silence.
“Anything you wanna talk about?”
Silence.
He pressed his lips together in a tight smile.  He’d sit with her for a while.  He had time.  And the longer this took, the more time he’d have.
When she realized he wasn’t leaving right away, she rolled her eyes again, released her eyelids, and began preparing her coffee.  He watched as she ate slowly, silently.  What was she working so hard to keep from them?  And how much longer could she keep it up?  She clearly didn’t have any kind of sleep deprivation training; she seemed to be doing it by sheer will power alone.
That would run out soon.  She would exhaust herself of what little energy she had left--body, mind, and spirit.  Soon she would break.  And he’d be sure to be there when she did.
Evelyn let out a heavy sigh when Ward finally left, tray of empty breakfast dishes in hand.  He promised to bring more coffee, but she hoped he wouldn’t.  She was so tired of his face being the only one she saw, his voice being the only one she heard besides her own.  Mostly.
The nightmare man’s breaths had been warm on her ear sporadically throughout the night.  While thankful not to have heard his voice again, she was wildly suspicious as to why.  And when.  When would he invade her senses again?
The door opened and she directed her view to the table top in front of her.  The smell of coffee was familiar, the light footsteps were not.  She looked up at the woman before her and blinked slowly once, twice, three times.  Jesus.  It was Skye.
Her heart swelled in her chest and Evelyn had to work very hard to not let a grin spread across her face.  A weight she hadn’t even realized had been there seemed to have lifted.  If Skye was here, she was definitely with SHIELD, not Hydra.  If Skye was here, Coulson had to be, too.
Skye stood next to the chair across from Evelyn, a kind, warm smile on her face.  A genuine smile.  A pitying smile.  Evelyn could see the sad look in her deep brown eyes, taking in the state of the girl she’d only seen through the security feed until now.
“Hi,” she said, her voice as warm as her smile.  “I’m Skye.  I heard you like coffee.”  She held the cup up a little higher for a moment.
Evelyn nodded.  She’d stick to her guns on only answering to Coulson, but she felt a need to show Skye in some way that she was thankful to see her face.
Skye set the cup down near Evelyn, mindful of how Ward always placed it a little ways away from her hands.  “Is it alright if I have a seat?”
Evelyn inclined her head slightly and lifted her brows to indicate that it was fine.  She watched as Skye sat, wondering what prompted her visit, what was going on behind the scenes, and if this meant she was one step closer to Coulson.  One step closer to going home…
“I’m sure you and Ward have been getting along swimmingly,” Skye said with a sympathetic look, “but I thought you might appreciate a fresh face.”
So that was it.  An actual good cop for the good cop/bad cop routine.  That or they thought she’d open up to a friendly female.  Evelyn looked at the coffee and dragged it near.  A brow twitched when she saw it already had creamer.
“I hope it’s not too creepy; Ward told me how you take your coffee.”
Evelyn shrugged, but kept her eyes downcast, her heavy eyelids fighting to stay open.
“I know,” Skye started slowly, cautiously, “this whole thing is scary, and you just want to go home.  But we need to make sure it’s safe for you to do that.  For everyone.”
Evelyn slowly brought her eyes to meet Skye’s.  “Thank you.  But I’ll only speak with Agent Coulson.”
Skye’s smile tightened a little.  “I’m sure Ward already told you-”
“Coulson, or no one,” Evelyn said, lifting the mug to her lips.
Skye nodded slowly, thoughtfully.  “And what if that never happens?  You can’t stay here forever, waiting.”
Evelyn took a slow sip, trying to pretend the coffee on her tongue tasted as good as the coffee Tony kept in the kitchen at the tower.  A breathy “hmmm” on her ear and she was tilting her head and setting the cup down.  She let her eyelids drop briefly, relishing the relief the action brought to her dry, burning eyes, and sighed.
“Agent Coulson.”
Skye regarded her for a moment.  Her slouching shoulders.  Her long hair hanging limply around her face.  Her heavily shadowed, red-rimmed eyes that seemed unable to hold anything in focus for any length of time.  This wasn’t working.
“Why Coulson?”
Evelyn’s attention shot to Skye at once, her mind taking a moment to catch up with her eyes, every ounce of the surprise she was feeling washing across her face.  She hadn’t expected Skye to deviate from Ward’s narrative.  “What?”
“Why do you only want to talk to Coulson?”
“Because I trust him.”
A corner of Skye’s lip twitched, but Evelyn missed it between elongated blinks.  “Then I’m sorry he’s not here,” she said.  “I’ll try to visit more often, give you a break from Ward now and then.
Evelyn nodded slowly.
“Take your time with your coffee, we’ll make sure you get more,” Skye said with a smile as she rose from her seat.
She left the room, leaving Abel in a daze.  Coulson was not going to be happy that she’d adlibbed, but she had to know.  Everyone wanted to know.  Why was the woman in the holding cell demanding to speak with Coulson?  The answer sounded simple enough, but it opened up a whole new line of questions.
Skye entered the command center, all eyes on her.  All except Fitz; he was keeping a close eye on the screen.
“What the hell was that?  The only reason I let you in there was because you promised to stick to the plan.  We don’t know what queues she might be able to pick up on, or what kind of danger you could have been in,” Coulson said, his tone reprimanding, but his face full of worry.
Skye threw a hand in indication towards the monitor.  “What the hell was that?  She trusts you?  You said you didn’t know her.”
“I don’t,” he said, baffled.  “No more than you do, but it looked like she was glad to see you.”
“Probably just glad to see anyone but Ward,” Skye crossed her arms, wondering what it must have been like for Abel up to that point, to have only seen the person who snatched her away.
Coulson looked thoughtfully to Ward, who was looking doubtful at Skye’s words.  “Maybe…  But I don’t think so.  The look on her face…”
“Sir,” Simmons called as she stepped into the room.  “I’m heading down to the lab; the results you asked for should be ready.”
“I’ll be right down.”  She nodded and left.  He looked at the others.  “Skye, check the web again for any signs of Abel.  Dig deep--there has to be something we missed.  Try looking into sleep studies gone wrong or something.”
“You got it,” she said with a nod then left.
“Fitz, keep an eye on Abel.”
Fitz looked up from the screen long enough to reply, “Yes, sir.”
“Ward, stick around.  I want you to stay on the hourly schedule with Abel.  And an extra pair of eyes and ears can’t hurt.”
He leaned with his backside against the desk next to Fitz, crossing his arms.  “Yes, sir.”
“Keep the volume turned up, and call me if she says anything interesting.  We need to figure out why she thinks she can trust me.”
The two men nodded, Fitz’s eyes still solidly on the screen, and Coulson took his leave.
“What do you suppose that thing is she does?” he asked, inclining his chin at the monitor.
Ward turned his head slightly to Fitz, eyebrows arched in question.  “Hm?”
“That creepy, slow head tilt thing she does.”
“I dunno, probably phoning home or something.”
“She’s not crazy, you know,” Fitz said, casting his gaze quickly to Ward.
“Oh yeah?  How would you know?  You been sneaking in to chat her up when it’s your watch?” Ward asked with a smirk.
“No,” Fitz replied, drawing the “o” out indignantly, and turning in his seat to look Ward full on.  “Anyone with half a brain can see it plain as day.  All of her interactions with you have been perfectly normal for an individual who’s been recently abducted and held in captivity.  Even the not sleeping bit can be attributed to a person experiencing abnormally high levels of stress, which,” he punctuated the word with the lift of his brows and a slight tilt of his head, “she certainly has.”  He returned his attention to the screen, quite satisfied with himself for having finally set Ward straight on the “Abel’s a headcase” debate.
Ward’s smirk widened into a teasing grin.  “Simmons tell you that?”
Fitz shot him a quick, pointed look.  “I don’t need Simmons to tell me basic biological responses! I happen to--wha...  Was that a man?”
“What?” In a heartbeat Ward was hunched over the desk looking closely at the screen.  “Where?”
“Just there,” Fitz pointed.  “Right behind her.  You watch her, I’ll pull up the playback on here,” he said, grabbing his tablet.  He scrubbed through the footage several times.  “I swear I saw--it looked like a man.  A man in a suit.  Fully transparent, but...”
Ward kept his eyes on Abel.  “Switch,” he said, holding out his hand.
Fitz handed off the tablet and kept his eyes steady on the screen.  Half willing the image to appear again, half dreading it.  “Do you think she’s haunted?  Like Hannah Hutchins was?”
Ward set the tablet down, unable to find what Fitz had seen.  “Hannah Hutchins wasn’t haunted, she was being stalked by a man caught between two different worlds.  What are the chances of that happening twice?”
“Highly unlikely.  But next time you’re in there, ask if she’s visited any particle accelerators lately, just to be sure.”
Not super important to the story but if you’re curious:  In episode 9 of season 1, Coulson’s team investigate Hannah Hutchins, who seemed to have developed a telekinetic defensive response after the particle accelerator she supervised exploded.  Turned out it was actually one of the workers (who had been sabotaging the accelerator in an attempt to get Hannah to notice him), who got stuck in a limbo state between worlds/dimensions as a result of the explosion he caused.

geo #5 with childe and keqing? owo
prompt: platonic friendship headcanons w/ childe & keqing and a gn!reader
rating: sfw headcanons
a/n: i hope u meant both of them with a reader... otherwise i’m not sure childe/keqing would work well as a friendship hehe. i love them both... thank you for the request!
CHILDE
childe is your ride or die friend. the kind who offers to beat someone up every time you have a minor inconvenience with someone.
he’s super encouraging and is your personal cheerleader!
if the two of you do anything together that involves mora, he WILL snatch your wallet from you when you’re not looking so you can’t pay the bill
it becomes a competition of who can pay for the bill first
it’s so bad that one of you asks the waiter if you can pay at a restaurant before you’ve even ordered
nonetheless, your friendship with him is rock-solid! he’s constantly moving around, but if you wish for him to do so, he’ll gladly exchange letters with you
teucer views you as an older sibling and loves your friendship with childe. he has a tendency to cling to your leg and beg you to stay whenever you try to leave childe’s house upon visiting his family.
don’t like to drink? no problem, childe can stay sober. but if you do? you’re invited to childe and zhongli’s drinking nights, when can get a little bit... raucous for the harbinger. zhongli, on the other hand, has an alcohol tolerance of a god... you’re not really sure why or how, though.
childe DEFINITELY gives you the strangest gifts. he gifts his own brother ruin guards, for archon’s sake. imagine what he’ll get you.
tell him that you’re really into a certain book series or play and a signed manuscript of said piece of writing will be hand-delivered to you the next day by some poor, overworked fatui agent.
he might be distant sometimes, but that’s because if childe’s doing something dangerous, he doesn’t want to put you in harm’s way by associating with him.
he’s a fiercely loyal and kind friend, even if he is a bit airheaded at times.
KEQING
keqing’s a busy girl, but an awesome friend to have! like childe, she’s loyal to a fault to what she believes in and if you’re her friend, she definitely believes in you!
however, being a part of the liyue qixing, keqing doesn’t have much free time to hang out with friends. she’s the kind of girl to put work first.
if you work with her on this (wink wink, nudge nudge), she’ll try her best to make time for the two of you to grab lunch amidst her lunch break or for the two of you to hang out after she’s done for the day.
she’s deeply appreciative of you working with her on this!
she likes to ramble about her ideas to improve liyue and prove that humanity is strong enough on their own. if you listen to her words with an open ear and provide advice, keqing will deeply, deeply appreciate your input.
unlike how most expect, keqing completely unwinds in your presence. she’ll goof off and spend your time together getting her childishness out. it’s hard being prim and proper all the time, especially when an entire country is looking to you to help lead!
she’s a stubborn to a fault, but has been trying her best to learn to compromise!
as time goes on, her complaining about rex lapis fades. when she finally goes a whole week without mentioning the god, you buy her a plush version of the archon’s dragon exuvia, causing her to flush bright red and let out a spew of half-hearted insults.
next time you go over to her house, however, the plush is sitting on the center of her perfectly made bed, keeping watch over her room.
over all, keqing loves you and tries her hardest to show it, but she’s often busy with qixing work. she always tries to make time for her friends, but don’t be surprised if she puts work first!

Books 2 and 4 in the Giver Quartet. While books 1 and 3 are also good, books 2 and 4 are featured here because they have female protagonists. did anyone watch codename: kid’s next door as a kid? idk why i was just thinking about it, but for real, fucking props to that cartoon for just. going absolutely avant guard nuts for their series finale? it being  a cartoon that actually had a proper series finale?
for those who never saw it: KND was about children who were also secret agents, fighting adults, who were also supervillans. it was weird, but come to think of it did sometimes have forays into dark shit -- like the fact that when the children turned 13, their memories would be wiped because they would be considered evil proto-adults, that one of the main character’s sister had gone through that and had turned evil because she didn’t want her memories wiped, etc.
anyway, the series finale? was live action. as i remember, the finale was about with the leader of the group — number 1 — being offered a role in the galactic kid’s next door (roll with it) and debating whether to take the position and leave his friends behind. but the cartoon action was intercut with live action middle aged actors portraying the adult versions of the other four cartoon characters, being interviewed about that final decision (their memories briefly restored). we find that the ditzy airhead is now a serious business woman, married to the hot tempered short kid — now, idk, the sort of guy who wears a sweater around his shoulders, god knows. the ships? confirmed. the heroes? in their forties. married. live action.
it’s just! it’s such a choice. i don’t remember anything about the plot, if it’s good or bad, it was just so ballsy and i kind of love it. no fading into the sunset for this show: no, the heroes grew up and got mortgages and aren’t even cartoons anymore. i love it. i  forget about it for months at a stretch and then i remember and just lose my mind. it’s such a baller way to end a cartoon show about secret agents who are children. i love it.

it's time for pony thoughts with notorious pony-thought-haver alexander switch:
seeing an orange pony with purple hair skating around in roller skates again activated my gen 3 neurons alright thanks for reading my review.
really it was good fun, definitely goofy and over the top at times but it's ponies so i'm just here for the ride. the 2d animated intro with m6 was very blatant FiM nostalgia baiting and i was too happy watching it to care lol. it's still the first movie so the series might escalate the stakes as time goes on like FiM did. nice to look at, although the animation seemed a bit... slow or floaty at times? also all the music was pretty good. sprout's "villain song" feels like it was intentionally trying to evoke How Bad Me Be but i liked the song.
i also liked all the characters well enough. im really relieved that izzy seems to be more of the sort of gentle-unaware airheaded-but-harmless type than the Pinkie "Agent Of Chaos God's Favorite Mistake Meme Pony Who Ruins Everything" Pie expy that i was afraid she would be. and zipp is chill, i like her. she's probably my favorite, unexpectedly. even alphabittle i ended up liking, though i still don't get why he's alphabittle. it's fine. he's fine. i think it'd be cute if him and the queen get married in the show or something. sprout sure is a character.
it seems like hitch might have an animal talent...? if he ends up dropping the cop thing in the tv show and figuring out that he has fluttershy-type talent i'm gonna be very pleasantly surprised. i'd really enjoy if the Token Boy Pony^tm actually had a cute nature-related talent vs just being a cop lol.
i don't... think sunny is actually literally supposed to be an alicorn at the end, considering the wings and horns were just transparent. pretty sure it was just some fun temporary magic event. but also if she was already an alicorn that would be hilarious and i wouldn't care at all. i know a lot of people thought twilight ending up an alicorn was really bad but god, i never cared, like to me her becoming an alicorn felt fairly earned and also completely inoffensive compared to cadance and flurry heart just kinda.... showing up. already alicorns. without much exploration or the kind of impact you'd expect that to have (or none in flurry's case because she got sent to comic hell and then they canceled comic hell). sunny ending up an alicorn in movie 1 would admittedly be super rushed but also very funny, but really in all likelihood it was just a toy design.

When Vanderwood first met MC, he thought she was a complete and total airhead. Probably was one of those people who had just graduated college on her parents' money and was sickeningly happy working in a cubicle.
But the more he saw of her, the more Vanderwood realized he had been so very wrong.
At first, it was only a few things that could have been explained away to fit his original impression. One time he had confiscated Agent 707's phone and saw MC cajoling the boy to eat proper meals. In a similar circumstance, he noticed her giving surprisingly sound advice about 707's mental state. She consoled him.
It's an interesting and comforting concept, in theory, to have a woman tend to the injuries of one's heart, Vanderwood mused. But for agents like him and 707, nothing was permanent. They would never have the luxury of settling down, of having long-term relationships, of experiencing love, if that even existed.
Besides, an innocent girl like MC could never understand how corrupt the world was that they operated in, working for client after dirty client.
Or at least, so he thought.
Vanderwood had seen a lot of messed up stuff, but even he was surprised at the charity organization's appalling background. The members' reactions to the series of revelations were understandable. It would wreck any normal person's life. But to him, the real shocker was MC.
Though in many cases, she was clearly terrified out of her wits, MC kept her composure. She made wise and clear-headed decisions when the situation called for it. That woman would have put the agency's new recruits who were going through training to shame. Very few people from a normal upbringing would be able to face the lunatic leader of a cult with such tenacity. Even fewer would be able to treat that person with kindness and mercy.
In Vanderwood's experience and the agency's training, kindness was weakness. It was a risk he couldn't afford to take. But this woman made him start to reconsider those long-held beliefs. The kindness that MC displayed was anything but weak. After all, the easiest reaction to have would have been anger or perhaps ignoring the situation altogether, but to actively pursue a threat with a stubborn will to make things right? That was madness, no doubt, but certainly not weakness.
The blue-haired man who was oddly attached to the cult leader made Vanderwood want to tear his hair out, yet MC approached the man with such gentleness. Idiots. They were all such idiots. Yet, this woman pursued each one of them with the type of care they truly needed.
She even played a part in helping himself and 707 break free of the agency. Now that he could form his own identity, he didn't quite know what to do with himself. He never considered applying for a normal job. He never considered having a permanent mailing address. He never considered having a habitual store to buy groceries from.
He never considered having feelings he didn't have to ignore.
He never considered having feelings he couldn't ignore.
He never considered falling for an airhead.
But she wasn't an airhead, despite his first impression. In fact, if he had ever bothered to spare a thought to consider his type, MC would have been exactly the sort of woman he would have chosen for a life partner. For...a wife.
Physically, her strength was positively laughable. Her strength of character, however, more than made up for it. As much as the inherent pun made him cringe, his best description of it was that she had a metal mettle.
To Vanderwood's surprise, MC began to use the same tactics on him that she did with 707. All of a sudden, she was nagging him about getting proper amounts of sleep as well. On one hand, the small woman's angry rants upon discovering a lack of personal care were adorable. On the other hand, that fiery attitude was downright hot.
There was no point in beating around the bush. That woman had to be his. At least, as long as she was willing. After all, MC had known the original RFA longer than she had known him. It would hardly be surprising if she had fallen for one of them first. Oddly enough, every one of the men was attractive in his own way.
Somehow, though, she did say yes. Perhaps in the not-too-distant future, she would answer him with another yes. He knew without a doubt that if she did, he would be husband to the most extraordinary woman among women.

Should our heroes do wrong?
Yes. Next question.
Why?
I kind of got into this with the talk of forgiveness, but this is definitely worth talking about. If we get through this the right way, we'll get to talk about redemption arcs. And, boy do I have things to say about that.
But first, let's talk about why heroes ought to do things that aren't particularly great. If you want to make a character more realistic, it's worth recognizing that there has to be a level of weakness to them. Obviously not so much that they're useless or evil. However, enough to let us know that they're not literally perfect.
After all, not a single one of us is perfect. We all have our different struggles, vices, and bad tendencies. As much as we look to characters as escapes from reality, it's rare that a character is considered great because they are perfect. Often, people like characters because they have the same quirks as them and sympathize with the imperfections in them, defending their perceived perfection from critics.
What happens when you get a character that literally is incapable of doing wrong or showing weakness?
In common parlance, a Mary Sue. To be clear, I recognize that there is a lot of sexism behind the use and misuse of the term. However, I don't think the term is useless. The best definition of Mary Sue comes from Overly Sarcastic Productions (whose analysis I love, outside of the conclusions on Fairy Tail as a five-man band). According to them, a Mary Sue is a force of the universe the series revolves around. The rules of the series bend to their whims in ways that other characters could only hope. In short, they're more of a force of nature than a real character.
To be fair, being imperfect isn't that bad. There are usually three ways to play imperfections off.
The first is the most obvious, playing it straight. A character's faults are known and matter, but that's about it. The issues last a couple of story arcs, but they're far from the main focus of a series or character arc. It's kind of hard to describe this beyond that. As we'll get to other types it should make sense of what I mean.
The second is when the problems with a character drive the plot of the series. This is when a story is built around a character's issues and navigating their daily actions in them. The show isn't about them overcoming the issue so much as it is them living with their issue.
A recent example of this is Bofuri. If you're unaware of the longer title of the show, the main character of the show decides to play as a shield-type character in an MMO. But, because she's an airhead, she decides to put all of her points into her defense stat so she "won't get hurt". The rest of the show follows her as she bobbles her way into the bulkiest tank build in the game with insanely broken abilities. The show isn't about her becoming less of an airhead and growing, so much as it is her thriving as a powerful player despite being an airhead.
The most important thing about this type of character is that it makes sense that they're able to function despite whatever issue they have. Like, if a person's issue is that they can't go without killing people, they probably shouldn't be a doctor. Though in Bungo Stray Dogs, one character can only cure people on the brink of death, no matter their actual issue. Regardless of how minor a person's injuries are, she has to bring them to the point of almost dying to fully heal them. However, she works as a doctor for a group of special agents and not a general hospital. At one point, she heals characters threatened by death in one of the coolest moments in the series.
The third is when problems with a character change as the story continues. This is where we delve into the reasons why a character is how they are and why they have to change. Their reasons for change can be love, growth, or just the personal decision to be better. The point is that they become less terrible people as the story continues.
How this plays out depends on what the issue is. In Your Lie in April, the main character's issue is his inability to play the piano again. As the story goes through, he becomes more and more able to play the piano. In Oregairu, the main character is a misanthropic jerk. As the series progresses, he comes to open up to people more and stop relying on himself. (AND IT”S BA-)
However, the most well-known way this plays out is a character making a mistake and has to atone for it. Normally, this just means a character makes a mistake throughout the story and has to make up for it. The character is forgiven and the story continues.
But some characters have arcs built around making up for the things they did. And, thus we get to redemption arcs. A lot of people have opinions on redemption arcs and how they ought to be handled. My own view is that a good redemption arc needs two components: a recognition of that a character messed up and clear signs of positive change. No good character redemption has neither of these and the reason so many sours for people is because they lack one or both elements and skip straight to the character "being better".
I think the coolest example of character redemption, as hinted in my talk about forgiveness, is Paul from the Bible. (Who'd you think I'd say?) We first hear of him under a different name approving the most famous martyrdom of Acts. When we next hear about him, he's killing Christians left and right. But after a literal divine encounter, he recognizes that what he did was wrong. He doesn't just stop killing Christians. He's attributed to writing more books of the Bible than anyone else. (I have to remind myself that people don't believe the Bible to be divinely inspired.)
I will make one word of caution. I don't think that a character can't be redeemed of even the harshest sins a person can commit. However, it's worth recognizing that good redemption isn't as glamourous as it's often made to seem. People will often take that to mean that redemption arcs ought to be painful for the person going through them. There’s an element in which breaking the bad habits and patterns one is accustomed to isn’t easy, but that’s not all I think it should mean.
It does mean the world doesn't open itself back open to released convicts. For many of them, their lives ended the instant they went back to jail, regardless of whether or not they leave better people. Even if they’re able to function in society again, it’s not going to be the same as before they committed their crime and before they were in jail.
To harken back to Endeavor, I doubt his family will ever fully forgive him for everything that he's done to them. They'll likely never be able to be a "normal family" because of how he's treated each of the members of his family. At the same time, I firmly believe he still should become a better person. That world needs as many good heroes as it can get.
To be continued...

Precure Day 152

Tumblr media
Okay I’ve gone this long without talking about it, so before we continue, it’s time for THE ROAST OF KOMACHI’S HAIR
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Her hair is evenly kept chin length all around her head except for a chunk in the back that reaches to her mid-back. It’s not a ponytail, it’s a thin section of her hair that is wildly longer than the rest. Now of course, anime hair is known to be absurd, but in Precure this is usually kept to their transformed states. Everybody else on the team (or eventual team) has pretty standard hairstyles: Nozomi has two small pigtails, traditional bangs, and wears the rest of her hair at shoulder length, Rin’s hair is short and curls out from the sides of her head, Urara wears long twintails, and Karen has long loose hair with neatly trimmed ends. Komachi is the standout with her absurd style. When she transforms it gets even weirder: the body of her hair poofs up and resembles Cure Bloom’s hair, while the bit in the back splits into two extremely long strands that reach her knees. This is still pretty wild but she’s on a team with a girl with hair loops and another with hair cones so she shares the weirdness among the team. I will never understand what the character designer was thinking when they came up with Komachi’s hair. Maybe there’s an interview out there where they explain it, I’d really like to know, because it is ridiculous.
Okay now that that’s out of the way, let’s actually talk about the episode....
The Plot
Rumors are starting to spread around the school about the strange phenomena that keep occurring. Karen discusses it with Komachi one morning and they find it odd that Urara has begun hanging out with Nozomi and Rin. At lunch, Coco reminds the three of them they still need to find the Precures of Tranquility and Intelligence, but they’re interrupted by Karen and Komachi confronting them about their perceived connection to all the suspicious activity. Nozomi sees an opportunity and decides to come out and explain that they’re Precures fighting Nightmare to protect the Dream Collet, and would these two like to help them? Nozomi explains how she thinks these two fit the qualifications Coco described, but they don’t really believe or understand what she’s saying, and Karen leaves in frustration. Komachi lags behind to say it was a lovely story, and she’d love to hear more sometime.
Meanwhile at Nightmare, we find out Gamao has gone MIA after failing his mission, and of course Girinma is still in isolation, so a third agent is called in to collect the Dream Collet: Arachnea. (You get one guess what kind of animal she is). She boasts about how much more capable she is than the other two, and Bunbee basically responds “I hope so.”
Tumblr media
Back at school, Rin has soccer practice, Urara tries to find Karen at a student council meeting, and Nozomi approaches Komachi in the library and discovers her writing. Komachi admits that she has wanted to be a novelist since she was very young, but all she gets is dismissal and mockery when she tells people that. Nozomi, however, encourages her and says she’ll support her dream! After all, that’s what she does best. They go for a walk outside and Komachi inquires further about the “story” Nozomi was telling earlier about Precure. Nozomi clarifies that it wasn’t a dream and explains the whole situation, and Komachi finally believes her but admits Karen is more stubborn. Before they can continue, spider webs suddenly come out of a nearby manhole and pull them down into the sewer, where they’re confronted by Arachnea herself, demanding the Dream Collet. She creates a Kowaina out of sewer water and chases the girls, who end up at a dead end. With no other options, Nozomi transforms in front of Komachi, kicks the monster, and they run off together.
Tumblr media
she just keeps kicking and kicking and kicking and kicking and....
At the same time, Coco has detected the presence of Nightmare and tags Rin and Urara to try to find Nozomi. They manage to follow her down the sewer and meet up with the missing girls. Rin and Urara transform in front of Komachi, and begin to fight the Kowaina. Arachnea wraps Dream and Komachi in webs and screams that they had no right to dream, that dreams are just illusions. Komachi takes this personally, and retorts that dreams are important and Nozomi is the first person to believe in and support her dream, and in turn she wants to support Nozomi’s dream as well. Her strong emotions summon a green butterfly, which disintegrates the webs binding Komachi before landing on her wrist and becoming a Pinky Catch. Not missing a beat, Komachi transforms into the Precure of Tranquility, Cure Mint! The Kowaina tries to attack them, but Mint uses her special attack, Precure Mint Protection, which is a butterfly that takes the form of a rapidly expanding shield. The monster is knocked back and Dream takes this chance to finish it off with Dream Attack, and Arachnea retreats, muttering about how she’s going to explain this to Bunbee.
The commotion in the sewer has attracted a crowd, and as Nozomi, Rin, and Urara climb out, Karen comments that she knew they were the ones stirring up trouble. Then Komachi climbs out and Karen is confused as the four girls laugh awkwardly.
Tumblr media
The Analysis
I know I keep coming back to this but I really enjoy how the various girls are active in investigating the mysterious occurrences resulting from the clash between the Precures and Nightmare. Even if nobody else has seen the actual fights, and the battlefields magically restore themselves, the noise and commotion of the fights attracts attention, and that’s how Komachi and Karen get roped into this mess. I also like how Nozomi is like “You know what? These two might be the ones” and just spills their secret. She recognizes that they have the qualities Coco is looking for: tranquility and knowledge, and Urara and Rin actually agree with her, though Rin is also self-aware enough to realize how absurd this all sounds to an outsider, and tells the seniors “I can see why you wouldn’t believe all of this, but it’s true.” It’s funny to me how Nozomi took a meeting where the two older girls were questioning their connection to the mysterious phenomena and turned it around on them into trying to make friends with them and have them join the Precures. She flipped the school hierarchy and power dynamic on its head, because she’s the pink. Also she’s that perfect combination of confident and airheaded that she can just go for it. I don’t mean this to sound bad, I honestly love Nozomi’s brand of earnestness and her sincere interest in helping other people achieve their dreams. Without getting too ahead of myself, she’s a lot more balanced than some other pink cures down the road.
Tumblr media
Speaking of dreams, this is where we really get a look at what Komachi likes to do in her spare time. We might have seen her writing in the first episode but this is the first one to focus on it, and show how she’s a little embarrassed to show people her work because she’s had too many bad experiences with people mocking her. Nozomi’s earnest support of her dream to become a writer is encouraging, and we’ll definitely see her grow and develop her writing skills throughout the show. It’s one of the more memorable character arcs in the show.
An interesting facet of Cure Mint is that she is primarily defense-based rather than being offensive like the other cures so far. Her special attack is a shield, and we’ll see several cures in the franchise who mirror this ability, but while it can be a useful skill and is demonstrably strong in the right circumstances, it feels a little too drawn out most of the time. I guess I’m okay with the whole stock footage chant to perform an attack, but doing the same to summon a shield when the danger is IMMINENT seems wasteful when we know they can jump out of the way. If she had a quick shield she could pull out with less fanfare and used the special attack shield to defend from wide-range attacks or to buy time while her teammates set up their attacks, I’d like it more. Mint Protection does get some time to shine down the road, but far too often it feels superfluous. Maybe that’s heathenous for me to say in a show about teamwork and everybody having a role to play.
Tumblr media
I’ll use this opportunity to briefly discuss the Kowaina since i haven’t properly done so before. Unlike Zakenna and Uzainaa before them, Kowaina are a bit more supernatural. The enemy of the week pulls out a full-face mask with a pointy nose and a creepy blank smile, then they throw it on an object, bringing it to life in a mutated form with the mask serving as the face. Also, they speak with a female voice rather than the brutish male voice of the previous shows’ monsters, and they always sound more creepy and spooky. It really adds to the mood and sets this series apart from its predecessors. The next episode will show us that the masks work on sentient creatures, not just inanimate objects, and that will bring some interesting implications.
On the topic of the villains, Arachnea is probably my favorite general from this series. She has the best design as a monster, she’s very serious and largely effective. Sure, she has to lose because plot, but her abilities give the team a run for their money. I’m not sure what she thought she’d gain by luring the girls into the sewer that she couldn’t do above ground, perhaps she thought she could limit their movement? It’s not that well-explained. However, that hiccup aside, I really enjoy her as a villain. Girinma is a close second but he often winds up as the butt monkey of Bunbee’s schemes, which is unfortunate.
Tumblr media
Now, this episode has several instances of animation that is best described as..... questionable. Actually, it’s not just this episode, it’s been prevalent all along, but I haven’t had time to bring it up before, and it’s prevalent enough here that I needed to discuss it. The models used for the characters for mid-range and far range shots are not awful, but their features and proportions are a bit distorted. Their faces in particular have eyes that are the wrong shape, which really stands out, and these shots are long enough that even if you’re not the most observant, you’ll realize they look off.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
For further out shots, we get the added bonus of noodle limbs.
Tumblr media
It’s not a great look, but at this point, we’re used to so-so animation in Precure.
I’ll try to talk about the music in the next one, because the audio design of YPC5 is fun and well enough removed from its predecessors. Look forward to that and more. Next time, on Precure Daily, a false start!

People I’d like to know better
Tumblr media
– one  /  Name / Alias: Beth, Aly, Grace
– two  /  Birthday: May 18th
– three  /  Zodiac Sign:  Taurus and boy is it spot on~ Especially the stubborn part!
– four  /  Height: 5′6″
– five  /  Hobbies: Gaming (Lets be frank, I really only play FFXIV anymore XD)), Archery, Drawing, Reading
– six  /  Favorite colors: I like the blue jays, green grass, yellow daffodils, pink sunsets, black starry nights, purple lilac, red ladybugs~
– seven  / Favorite book: I use to ready four books in a week back in the day. Now I just am so busy I rarely get through the news daily on my phone. I have favorite series of books that I’ve read multiple times. ASOIAF, The Night Angel Series, Harry Potter, The Star Wars X-wing series. If I’m feeling particularly sappy, I’ll read Lynn Kurland romance novels.
– eight  /  Last song listened to: The Chainsmokers - Hope Ft Winoa Oak
– nine  /  Last Film Watched: We watched the Fellowship of the Rings the other day. Makes me miss New Zealand so much!
– ten  /  Inspiration for Muse: Alysia actually was kind of a blank slate character when I came over to FFXIV. I wanted someone who was a bit naive and wide eyed innocent so that if I mucked up the lore, I could easily have her be like “OOOOH I’m sorry. I’m just a rural fisherman’s daughter!” But then as I settled into the game, I developed her more. I wanted to have a polite, kind character who felt authentic and genuine. I’d seen plenty of “nice girl” types while playing WoW but they really were just THOTS in disguise or were played more ditzy airhead. I wanted her to be witty and gentle, with a heart of gold. That way I could see how she’d develop in the rather shitty wide world and how her morals and principles would be pushed and stretched.
– eleven  /  Dream Job: Ok, so I’ve long given up that there is a “dream job”. When you do something you “love”, it quickly becomes something you don’t love. You start doing it for the money and not for you or for any gratification. You start to resent it and it’s not really that thing you do that makes you happy anymore.
There are different aspects that I look for in a job though. I like clinic work. I like working in a hospital setting and dealing with patients. I worked in Veterinary for 10 years and got to do some amazingly fun stuff. I even ran my own veterinary clinic for 3 of those years. However, it’s not really condusive now that I’m getting old. Veterinary work is stressful and emotionally draining.
So instead, I’m now going back to school to become a Radiological Technician.  The hours tend to be better than nursing because it’s a diagnosis, I get to work with people but at the same tie, I don’t have to be responsible for them. No medication, no treatment plans. I just get to take the pictures and send them on their way while being like “DAMN! How’d they manage to swallow that~!~”
– twelve  / Meaning behind your URL: I doubt it surprises anyone that I’m not particularly the most reserved person. I tend to be crass and vocal but kind and generous. I’m also not particularly graceful physically or socially. And that’s not necessarily a bad thing to push through the boundaries of what earlier generations expected of women. So Breaking-from-grace was just like a statement of “This is who I am and I really don’t care if I’m not your perfect barbie girl!”

Lili Frond
I’ve been rereading the Artemis Fowl books. I still enjoy them. However, there’s one thing that really bugs me now that didn’t when I was younger; Lili Frond and Holy Short’s attitude to her.
Puting this under a keep reading because it’s long
More than half the recurring characters are male. The only female characters that could be considered main characters are Angeline Fowl, Juliet Butler, Opal Koboi, Minerva Paradizo and Holy Short. In two of the books Angeline is very ill and Artemis is willing to do anything to make his mother healthy again. Other than that, Angeline is a background character that Artemis sometimes feels bad about lying to. Juliet is treated well and gets to go on adventures but half the time she isn’t in the books or only has a smaller part to play than the other main characters. Opal Koboi is the main antagonist for the series. Minerva is only in one book. Holy is in every book and gets to be awesome.
Lili Frond is a character that we never get to meet in person. Mostly we just hear about her from Holy’s point of view.
Holy constantly shits on her. To me it comes across like Holy has a ‘not like other girls’ mentality and looks down on other women. The only other woman we know Holy is on friendly terms with is Juliet. That’s mostly because she hangs out with her at the same time she hangs out with Artemis and Butler.
Holy has a need to be the best at everything. Every time someone underestimates her or thinks she can’t do something; she has to prove them wrong. In her mind, they only ever have doubts about her abilities because she’s a woman. Sexism and discrimination is BAD! Or at least it is when it’s directed at her. It’s fine when she’s doing the same thing to someone else.
In training, Holy was always made to play the victim because her instructor said stereotypes exist for a reason. Holy hated it.
When Holy first joined the LEP, there were rumours going around that she hadn’t earned her place and that she’d just been given the job as part of a push of diversity. Holy quickly quashed those rumours by being the best at her job.
However, when Lili Frond was made a corporal and Holy heard the rumours about her not really being good enough, she instantly believed them. Lili is blond, pretty and related to the fairy kings of old. That must mean that the stories of her examiners boosted her results so they’d be high enough for her to get a job are true, right?
Holy calls Lili a bimbo and an airhead and, as one of the point of view characters, that’s the main impression we get of her. We never get to form that impression for ourselves as she never turns up. However, the other characters that know her don’t seem to agree.
Commander Julius Root thought about replacing Holy with Lili as the LEPs test case female operative that got to go above ground. Much as Holy dislikes Lili, Root would never have picked someone he didn’t think could do the job. Lili must be at the very least competent at her job, even if she doesn’t have Holy’s ability to come up with plans on the spot and bend the rules.
Later, Commander Trouble Kelp starts dating Lili. Holy assumed that they could not be happy together. In Holy’s mind, Trouble must only be dating her because he can’t be with who he really wants to be with. They are clearly wrong for each other.
We never get to hear what Trouble thinks of that. We don’t know how Trouble or Lili actually feel about their relationship together. We just know what Holy thinks. Trouble never stuck me as a person who’d fool himself into dating someone he didn’t really like or the sort of person who’d deliberately string someone else along.
It really bothers me that a female character we never actually get to meet gets shit on every time she’s mentioned by the main female character of the series. Two male characters, who are generally shown as having good judgment, seem to think she’s okay. We don’t know what other women apart from Holy think of her.
I think Holy just liked being the only women in the LEP. In her mind, she’s the best so any rumours otherwise are just down to sexism but if any other women come close to her, it can’t possibly be because she’s good too.
Now I want a story staring Lili Frond, about how it was her dream to be in the LEP and Holy’s success pushed her to follow it. She might not be as good as Holy but she follows the rules, is methodical, solid and dependable and gets the job done.
Lili gets embarrassed and uncomfortable when she’s asked to do things like be the voice on the LEPRecon agent's helmet as people make it clear it’s because she’s pretty and sounds nice. Her looks and family are not all there is to her. She can’t help how she looks but she tries to play down her heritage. Neither had anying to do with her getting the job, no matter what you might hear.
Lili works hard and rise through the ranks slowly. Eventually, she starts dating Trouble and they are happy together. Maybe it works out between them, maybe it doesn’t. If it doesn’t work, it isn’t because Trouble doesn’t really like her and is just fooling himself.

This week, Ruby Rose joins The CW’s evergrowing Arrowverse as Kate Kane a.k.a. Batwoman in the Elseworlds crossover with The Flash, Supergirl, and Arrow. After the crossover, she will go on to star in her own series that is currently in development for the next TV season.
From Arrowverse guru Greg Berlanti as well as Caroline Dries (Smallville, The Vampire Diaries), the project would be the network’s sixth DC drama, if ordered to series. While the crossover hasn’t even aired yet, That Hashtag Show can exclusively reveal that the spin-off series is currently casting its core characters to join Rose!
With production aimed to start sometime in 2019, casting is currently focused on six main characters that will join Rose’s Batwoman. As per usual, casting has given these six players random names that are most likely cover names as these people may be from the DC Universe. However, we have some good ideas on who they all might be from the comics, so strap in because there are a lot of them.
First off, we have “Joseph”, a Caucasian male in his late 40s to mid-50s. “Joseph” is described as a former high ranking military Colonel, who instead of grieving the terrible loss of his wife and one of his daughters, formed his own army in order to make sure no one else has to ever go through the tragedy he had to experience. “Joseph” also leads a private security and logistics firm in Gotham City, called “The Crows.” He is both extremely tough, political as well as emotionless, but has one weakness in his life that makes him soften up…and that is his other daughter who he constantly tries to push away.
Based on the description, “Joseph” is most likely none other than Kate’s father Jake Kane. Her father has always played a big role in the recent comics. When we broke the breakdown for Kate Kane back in the summer, we got teases of her complicated relationship with her father. But Jake may not be the only family member we will see on the show.
Next up is “Alexa” who the casting department describes as a 27-year old Caucasian who is Batwoman’s greatest enemy, basically her own personal Joker. “Alexa” is a woman who has experienced a tremendous amount of trauma in her more sensitive years. That has in turn caused “Alexa” to divorce herself from reality by living in a fantastical world where she is the star. Attached to Victorian attire, “Alexa” is a charming lunatic who manages to go from being psychotic to caring easily, which is why her unreliable behavior is a dangerous weapon in itself.
“Alexa” sounds exactly like the villainous Alice a.k.a. Kate’s twin sister Elizabeth who Kate and Jake believed to be dead for all these years. But as you know, dead in comics doesn’t always stay dead. So, should this indeed be Alice, our dear Kate will definitely have quite the challenge in her first season.
Next, we have “Sloane”, who is a Latina in her late 20s/early 30s. Brought up in a tight-knit family, “Sloane” is both feisty, charming and has incredible fighting abilities, with soldier experiences, as she is one of the best agents for the Crows and always goes by the book. But “Sloane” is hiding a deep secret from her husband which is that once upon a time, she was in love with Kate Kane.
For any hardcore Batwoman fans out there, it should come as no surprise that “Sloane” sounds very much like Renee Montoya. In the comics, she is one of the prime Gotham PD characters who later on ended up as the second person to carry the Question mantle and also had a romantic relationship with Batwoman. Given that Maggie Sawyers, Kate’s other love interest in later stories, has already come and left the Arrowverse, it would make more sense for the series to play with the Renee/Kate romance. If this is Renee, will we see her as the Question? Only time will tell.
Then there is “Landon”, an African-American male in his early 20s who is devoted to Batman. “Landon” comes from an imperative legacy that has serviced the Caped Crusader with engineered gadgets. With Wayne Enterprises now abandoned, “Landon” is the one keeping it secure. While he is brilliant with tech, his social skills aren’t exactly the strongest as he goes out of his way to not make friends, after being betrayed by Gotham’s bureaucracy. With the Dark Knight missing, “Landon” soon begins to understand Gotham City’s demand for a new hero.
Everything in this description points to “Landon” as the son of Lucius Fox, Luke. He was introduced as part of the New 52 and became the second person to carry the Batwing mantle. Given that most of the Berlanti-DC shows always have a tech-based character (Felicity Smoak, Winn Schott, Zari Tomaz, Brainiac 5, Peter Gambi), it seems fitting to have one for Kate Kane. If this is Luke, there is no telling whether or not we’ll see him become Batwing on the show.
Up next, meet “Meredith”, a woman in her early 20s, a role that is open for any ethnicity, with preference to Asian or Latin actresses. She is described as carrying a lovely and heavy demeanor, which makes it easy to view her as an airheaded amateur. Although she is considered talky, she is deeply compassionate toward those the city has forgotten, with her compassion only surpassed by her own intelligence. Like Kate Kane, “Meredith” will have a secret life of her own in Gotham City.
It would appear that “Meredith” is potentially none other than Kate’s cousin Bette Kane, who is better known as the superhero Flamebird in the DC lore. Given their team-ups in the comics, it makes sense for Flamebird to be part of the series in one way or another.
Last, but not least we have “Charlotte”, a woman in her late 40s to mid-50s who is the mother of “Meredith”, hence the same casting preferences is part of this role. “Charlotte”, a knowledgeable, fashionable, and motivated woman, comes from wealth built from an empire of dealing arms, but she uses this money with the intent on making Gotham a more secure and safe place due to the aid of her husband’s paramilitary business. Despite the fact that it is damaging “Charlotte’s” relationship with her daughter, she continues to pull the strings of Gotham City’s elite.
Should “Meredith” be Bette Kane, then “Charlotte” is Flamebird’s mom, although her real name in the comics hasn’t popped up. So it would appear that this would be Batwoman’s first original character who will somehow play a large role. With David Rapaport (Arrowverse, Titans, Riverdale, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina) as the casting director for this super-show, we know he will be bringing some amazing talent to these beloved characters!

Bookshelf Briefs 12/17/20
Chainsaw Man, Vol. 1 | By Tatsuki Fujimoto | Viz Media – It’s a little hard to live up to the hype that this title has gotten on social media, and I admit this first volume did not wow me as much as I’d expect. It seems to run on gonzo and gore, and (from what I’ve heard) gets better as it goes along. That leaves us with this volume, where a young man trying to pay off his father’s debt gets nearly brutally murdered, only to fuse with a chainsaw dog, making him the titular character. He’s taken in by an agency whose head seems so deeply, deeply suspicious I’ll be very surprised if she turns out not to be evil. It’s OK, though, because it means he might one day squeeze her chest! I might have liked this better in a different year, but I will give it another shot with volume two. – Sean Gaffney
The Invincible Reincarnated Ponkotsu, Vol. 1 | By Reona Umitsuki | Kodansha Comics (digital only) – This may be one of the dumbest manga I’ve read since the halcyon days of Sasameke. That said, it’s not trying to be anything else—ponkotsu means “airhead,” but apparently not the same way a tennen is. Our protagonists get reincarnated into heroes. Sanae has absolute brute strength, but only when used by accident. Shota has supposed high defense, but he keeps ending up near death anyway. And Kana can heal Shota (because she has a crush on him)… but only with her boobs. It’s deliberately over-the-top and silly, and sometimes I did crack a smile, but mostly I just sighed, especially towards the end when it briefly tried to be serious. For hardcore ponkotsus only. – Sean Gaffney
Komi Can’t Communicate, Vol. 10 | By Tomohito Oda | Viz Media – I was running behind when I reviewed volume nine, so I got to read volume ten straight away. And it’s a big sea change—there’s a new year and new classes, and most of Komi’s friends are not in her new class. Fortunately, Tadano is, so she’s not completely alone. (Also fortunately, this means Yamai is now elsewhere, though we see her once or twice.) In their place we get Rumiko Manbagi, who is a hardcore gyaru with tons and tons of makeup, who is also suffering from her friends now being in another class. The makeup doesn’t last, but she and Komi bond more than any other friend Komi’s had except for Tadano. Speaking of Tadano, Manbaki is acting awfully tsundere with him. A great addition to the Komi cast. – Sean Gaffney
Mujirushi: The Sign of Dreams | By Naoki Urasawa | Viz Media – I primarily picked up Mujirushi for two reasons: (1) Urasawa is one of those creators whose manga I will always try and (2) the volume is part of the “Louvre Collection,” a series of comics commissioned by the Louvre highlighting the museum and its art. Considering these two things, as well as the somewhat ominous cover image, I really was not expecting Mujirushi to be as much of a comedy as it is. (I also wasn’t expecting masks reminiscent of President Trump’s face to come into play multiple times.) In addition to the Louvre, Mujirushi is also inspired by Fujio Akatsuka’s Osomatsu-kun. In particular, Iyami, a character from that franchise, is pivotal to Urasawa’s story. The real star of the show for me, though, is the whip-smart Kasumi on the cover. Mujirushi is an entertainingly absurd caper, featuring an art heist which is certainly not to be taken too seriously. – Ash Brown
Practice Makes Perfect, Vol. 2 | By Ui Hanamiya | Kodansha Comics (digital only) – There’s a sweet romance going on here, as our two protagonists realize that they’re not really content with this just being practice after all, and I enjoyed the big press conference at the end of the book after they’re found out, where both admit—on air—to being virgins. I read this title more for the hilarious aspects of treating sex as another Olympic sport like volleyball or judo. The two shouting at each other about training harder is great, but I think the top moment of the title was when (pardon me, it is a mature manga) Takaya tries to get advice on how to use his fingers to pleasure Nohara, and whines “they’re going to cramp up!” Still better than I expected. – Sean Gaffney
Shikimori’s Not Just a Cutie, Vol. 1 | By Keigo Maki | Kodansha Comics – This did not really go in the direction I expected. Shikimori is indeed cute, and does show off that side of her to her boyfriend. Sadly, he has bad luck and is pretty weak, so essentially needs saving constantly, which inevitably makes her more cool than cute. Of course, he loves that too, but Shikimori is a fragile young woman, and would much rather be cute. There’s no real ‘are we going to break up’ dangers here, and indeed they start the book already together. The reason to read this is Shikimori’s embarrassed blushes and cool poses, which is exactly the same reason that her boyfriend loves her. It’s not the best romantic comedy in the world, but it’s pretty damn cute. I mean cool. – Sean Gaffney
Spy x Family, Vol. 3 | By Tatsuya Endo | Viz Media – There is so much wonderful comedy in this series. Yuri’s huge sister complex, Anya and the dodgeball game (complete with Bazooka Bill!), and everything about the “extra chapter,” where Yor gets shot in the ass during an assassination and has to endure the pain with a massive frown on her face. But there’s also a lot of heartwarming family stuff here as well—Yor doubting her skills as a wife, Anya getting upset whenever Lloyd and Yor aren’t getting along, even that same extra chapter, which is very funny but also has Anya tell an enemy agent to hang it up and go keep his girlfriend happy instead. It’s that balance that makes this one of the breakout hits of the last two years. – Sean Gaffney
UQ Holder, Vol. 20 | By Ken Akamatsu | Kodansha Comics – There’s a lot going on here—flashbacks (or is it flashforwards?), training arcs, lots of big old battles, and, for once, surprisingly minimal perverse antics. (Akamatsu is in shonen fight mode rather than harem nudity mode.) The general question we see in this book… and really the entire series… is “is being immortal a good thing?” Especially if it comes at the expense of a great deal of the solar system. Touta continues to show off how much he’s not like Negi—unfortunately, that makes him far more normal, and there’s less to distinguish him from other idiot heroes. I still enjoy reading UQ Holder, but, as with all of Akamatsu’s series, it feels like it should have ended a while earlier and is coasting a bit. – Sean Gaffney

So after setting up a 100+ plugin modlist for Raka, I started their official Skyrim SE run with SkygerfalI. This is really long. Like, really really long. And it’s packed with spoilers, so my fingers are crossed that the cut works on mobile because otherwise I am so, SO sorry to mobile users.
Links: Legendary - Special Edition
What a hell of a mod. It was so much easier to swallow than Daggerfall proper, I’ll give it that! For one, the 3D map in Daggerfall drives me batty. I can’t read it at all, and the samey graphics in every dungeon make them really hard to navigate. For another, Daggerfall notably averts the “take your time” trope where players are allowed to fuck off and do whatever they want while the main quest stays politely paused in the background - almost every single quest is timed, and exceeding the time limit is an automatic fail. It’s possible to lock yourself out of the main quest this way.
Thankfully, the Skygerfall mod recreates all the main quest dungeons with a significantly more helpful Skyrim-style local map. The mod page describes the dungeons as hand crafted, and... well, I’d personally describe it as LOVINGLY put together. The attention to detail is exquisite, and it absolutely feels like a recreation of the dungeons. In fact, it’s so carefully and thoroughly remade that for the most part, the original walkthroughs on UESP came in handy for the few places I got stuck (ahem... Direnni Tower). There’s so many twisting corridors, right angles, and those big huge pyramid-esque centerpieces. My unabashed favorites are the little diagonal rooms hidden within other small rooms, tucked into corners in and of themselves. My own playthrough of Daggerfall made me look forward to those spaces as good places to rest or find loot.
There is not much going on outside the cities or dungeons though! Since it was, for the most part, a single dev putting the whole thing together in their spare time, it’s just the main quest. Even the main towns are largely empty, save for tavern owners (who act as general good merchants), a blacksmith in Daggerfall proper, and any NPCs directly related to the main questline. Ironically, Scourg Barrow is one of the most populated places in the entire game, if only by volume of nonhostile NPCs! The palaces also have merchants and guards around, and there’s a... cheerful little kid over at Wayrest who would love to meet your Agent.
That means no questlines for any of the side factions, very few extra merchants to buy your high volume of crap (though you wont actually need more than one or two at a time), no side dungeons to explore, and nothing in the landscape between the map markers. There’s not even any generic NPCs to populate the towns, and almost no interiors.
Still, it’s entirely worth playing, if you want the basic runthrough of Daggerfall’s main quest in a familiar, modern engine. Particular props goes to some of the scenery and levels. Where there’s very little going on outside of your quest targets, the places that have been built are stunning. Shedungent’s exterior in specific enchanted me, looking exactly like a medieval castle with plenty of nooks and crannies to poke into (though no loot, unfortunately... not that I need any extra with how much garbage I haul out of those dungeons). Another particular detail that I loved were... pigs, actually. I loved the pigs. There’s a few dungeons that contain pigs, which existed in Daggerfall.
Tumblr media
I love them. They’re darling.
I dunno, the fact that Oracus0 put so much time and effort into making sure that Skygerfall was a true to the original as possible, down to the animals passively hanging out, really brought me into it. Sure, I wish there weren’t giant scorpions in any game ever, but I can also appreciate that since they were in the original, they were there in Skygerfall (and that they dropped a Raka certified safe alchemical ingredient). And who doesn’t get excited when they see the loot pile model tucked behind a locked door?
I also ADORED - spoiler alert - Aetherius, which turned the game into a full-fledged puzzle platformer. Note to anybody playing through the Room of Fire? You can and will fall off if you’re not careful! But the scenery there is also gorgeous, with a stunning backdrop of swirling stars and galaxies, hellfire, and a wonderfully dapper Sheogorath (whose voice actor does a great job, by the way, of holding true to Sheogorath’s canon voice).
Bonus points for having (and I must emphasize) FULL VOICE ACTING. Every NPC available in the game has a voice. All of the custom NPCs have custom voice acting, and every voice actor did a real bang up job. There wasn’t a single character I encountered whose voice didn’t match them.
It’s also way more... cartoony? Than Skyrim, and it shows a lot in places where custom and vanilla 3D assets were used right next to each other. There’s a lot of blocky, and almost plastic-y walls, floors, sconces, etc that made some of the rough-and-tumble stuff stick out, but it’s not actually enough to take you out of the game unless you’re a really picky bastard imo. It works really well for being a faithful recreation of Daggerfall, which looked like... well. This:
Tumblr media
I had a habit of taking pictures of any cool animals I saw in Daggerfall, especially if I haven’t seen them in TES before. Speaking of this awesome camel picture, not to fear if you’re worried about hauling all your crap out of the dungeons like I am (my partner has a hard time watching me play Skyrim with the way I lug out everything that isn’t nailed down to hawk later)...
There’s a mount waiting for you near Sentinel!
...(: That’s right. You get a camel. No need to buy it, it’s not tagged as theft (as of 11/12/19, a little under a month post initial release). It works exactly like a horse - hop on and it’ll help you bounce between map markers, even if you’re overencumbered by several hundred pounds of loose swords, gemstones, potions, and your enemies’ underwear. It looks AMAZING, and though you kind of clip through his hump a little bit, it’s again not really an issue unless you’re overtly picky.
The only thing I absolutely cannot stand is... mythril.
Mythril in this mod is... blue. The armor is gray, but the weapons and shield are blue. Not a silver blue or a dark slate blue in the way you’d expect from something metallic. No, I’m talking about Hawaiian Punch Blue Typhoon, I’m talking blue raspberry Airheads, I’m talking about Lapis lazuli from Minecraft and/or Steven Universe, Cornflower Blue Crayola, “her cerulean orbs” fuckin BLUE. That was the ONLY thing that really stuck in my craw. Raka is an archer, but in the event of an emergency they dual-wield daggers and for a period the best one I had on hand aside from the ebony dagger was mythril and I hated it. I resented it. Every time Raka had to get into close quarters I grumbled with distaste as soon as that goddamn Manic Panic deep dream knife popped out on my screen. I replaced it with adamantium as soon as I was able to.
Everything else was copacetic! As with the set dressing, a lot of the custom armor and weapons were kind of cartoony and might stick out in Skyrim proper, but they’re pretty charming in that way. If for no other reason than collection purposes, I took one of everything with me to Skyrim at the end of the questline with the intent to maybe display it in one of Raka’s player homes. Especially the adamantium, which out of everything fits in the best with vanilla Skyrim’s assets (as far as I can tell, don’t quote me on that, please!).
Again, it’s a very lovingly made tribute to the original game, with a lot of time and effort put into it. A lot of modder resources were used in order to achieve this end, and what an end it is. For all of the places where there might be criticism, it’s still a fantastic piece of work that deserves a lot of praise and appreciation, especially since it was largely a single dev working and learning by themselves to put it together. It’s still hours of content to work through, having taken me about 4 days to get through via my playstyle, even when it primarily involved jumping between map markers and delving into dungeons. God only knows I’d have never gotten to the actual main quest of Daggerfall in the original engine, and likely not even in Daggerfall Unity, as I was too busy messing around, getting headaches from the procedurally generated dungeons, and trying to climb the ranks of the Mage’s Guild and Thieves Guild. Not to say that that isn’t a fun and completely valid way to play the game. But Skygerfall allowed me to play through the actual main quest, kept me engaged with voiced characters and a streamlined series of events, and a thorough and faithful recreation.
A lot of people mentioned wanting more stuff between the towns and cities currently in the mod, but personally, going forward, I’d love to see what already exists be expanded. I’d love to see more shop interiors, some generic NPCs to chat with or ask about rumors from (or even just to fill out the space! I’m not picky!), and maybe some basic structure for some of the guilds.
That being said, it’s still a complete mod in and of itself. It has all the components anyone could reasonably ask for. It has its dungeons, it has its armors and weapons, it has custom spells, potions, and ingredients. It makes use of monsters from the Mihail mods, populating the underground with lots of scary and lore-appropriate foes to fight. It has very little to explore outside of that, but still offers a LOT, and I was able to enjoy the main quest of Daggerfall in a way that was comfortable and easily playable for myself, which is more than can be said for the clunky DOS the original game is built in. I would not be mad if Oracus0 decided to close it up, call it good, support bugs for a while, and moved on. They’ve done plenty in the way of Skygerfall, and though I’d love to see more I’m also incredibly happy with what I got! I’m pleased as punch, got to roleplay my little idiot moron bosmer in their original context, and then was able to seamlessly integrate them into the world of Skyrim (via Live Another Life, which is supported by Skygerfall) to enjoy the rest of their modlist. I can’t recommend it enough, especially if you want to get a feel for Daggerfall with some of the comfort and convenience of a better engine and less stingy limitations.
