This Side of Normal Ch. 10

Marinette glances around the silent table, willing Jason to say something. Or do something. Or even Dick. She needed one of them to start a conversation, because Adrien hated awkward silences. And if this silence went on much longer, he was definitely going to say something and then she would regret it. Horribly.
“These rolls are purr-fect.” Adrien says, out of nowhere. Marinette lets out a groan, of course he’d skip straight ahead to the cat puns. Of course that’s where his freaking mind was tonight.
“Aren’t they? I’d say Alfred’s cooking is pretty claw-some, myself.” Dick speaks up, grinning at Adrien. Marinette looks at him, wide eyed.
“That’s it. I’ll find a new trapeze partner and a new best friend. Both of you are out of my life.” She deadpans, ignoring Adrien’s offended gasp.
“But Bugaboo, who else would give you a hand with your crazy schemes?” Adrien asks, and Marinette turns to him, narrowing her eyes.
“I swear to god if you take your arm off right now you will never find it again.” She threatens, pointing her fork at him from across the table.
“But Mari, that joke needs the arm. It doesn’t work without it.” He pouts, she rolls her eyes and turns to Damian.
“I apologize for him. He thinks he’s funny.” She says, turning her glance back at Adrien. “He’s wrong.”
“Tt. I’m unbothered by his sense of humor. I have lived with Grayson for eight years. His humor is nothing compared to those horrors.” Damian quips, and Marinette swears his lips almost quirk into a smile. She snorts.
“Guess I made the right choice in throwing Dick to the curb, huh?” She teases, ignoring Dick’s gasp and Adrien’s reassurance to the man. Honestly, who was the adult here?
“It was for the best, Dupain-Cheng.” Damian says and Marinette winces slightly. The only person who called her by her last name (in regular conversation, anyway) was Chloe. And while the girl had long since given up full on bullying her, she still wasn’t Marinette’s best friend in the world.
“You can call me Marinette, my last name is kind of a mouthful.” She says, trying to be nonchalant about it. She’d heard him refer to everyone else as their last name the entire evening. She didn’t want to make him uncomfortable, but him calling her Dupain-Cheng was going to make her uncomfortable in the long run.
“Very well.” He says, and though he doesn’t say her name, she still counts it as a win. A throat clearing catches her attention and she glances at Jason who was glaring at Damian.
“What’s up, Jay?” She asks, quirking an eyebrow.
“Nothing Pixie Pop. Just thinking about the time you kicked the ass of that would be mugger.” He says, and Marinette frowns. Mugger? “You know, the one that was obsessed with you?” He clarifies, and she understands. Copycat had been reakumatized during Jason’s stay in Paris. And he had wanted nothing more than a date with Ladybug. Though, she couldn’t understand why he was bringing it up now.
“I am so lost.” She admits, shaking her head at her pseudo-brother. He grins.
“That’s fine, just sharing that you can kick ass with the table. In case someone wants to try something.” He says pointedly. Oh. He definitely caught the heart eyes she sent Damian back in the gym. Can he blame her, though? Her weakness was green eyes. And Damian’s were the greenest.
“I did walk in on you hogtied, Todd. I assumed she was a reputable fighter after that.” Damian says, and Marinette blushes furiously.
“I’m sorry, what happened?” Mr. Wayne asks, his vapid (and fake) smile replaced with a faux look of bewilderment. She briefly wondered if it was exhausting, putting on a constant act, until she remembered how tired she was throughout collège, before she started lycée and decided she didn’t really care. Yeah, acting constantly was tiring. But why did he do it? Jason nudges her lightly and she blinks, focusing back on the conversation.
“Oh, Jason and I sparred. He apparently had forgotten that I use my surroundings to my advantage and that Adrien is always on my side.” She explains, shooting Jason a smug smile. Jason huffs.
“Not always.” He says, and Marinette raises an eyebrow, crossing her arms and giving him a challenging look.
“Oh really? Name one time that Adrien took your side instead of mine.” She challenges. She grins as Jason starts to think, obviously wracking his brain.
“Earlier today!” Adrien pipes up, and she immediately turns to him, glaring.
“What?” She asks, confused. What had- oh. Of fucking course. “That doesn’t count!” She protests, narrowing her eyes.
“Why not?” Adrien asks, raising an eyebrow in a challenge. She scoffs.
“Because it wasn’t a fight or argument or anything. It was a joke.” She says.
“Are you talking about the adoption shit, cause that was definitely not a joke. All the kids B adopts definitely have trauma and certain features.” Jason cuts in, and Marinette sighs. Of course he would clue in.
“But- no. No. That was a fluke. A glitch in the matrix, obviously. You literally cannot name a singular other time. And technically, ya big jerk, you didn’t even name this time. Adrien did.” Marinette points out, glaring at Jason.
“I’m sorry, how long have you three known each other?” Mr. Wayne cuts in again, and this time- this time- she sees that some of the confusion on his face is real. But it looks odd, like he wasn’t used to expressing a real emotion. She really needed to remind herself to talk to Jason about this later. She didn’t necessarily want to make it a habit to stick billionaire fathers with asshole tendencies in jail, but she would. She’d do it for her boys. Any day of the week. She hums in thought, adding up the time. The anniversary of Gabriel’s defeat had been a few weeks ago, which meant-
“We’ve known Jason for just over a year.” She says, before glancing at Adrien and grinning. “But I’ve been stuck with this goof for four years.”
“You know you love me.” Adrien says with a wide grin. She rolls her eyes.
“How exactly did you meet Jason?” Mr. Wayne asks, and she kind of wants to throw her fork at him. What was it, interrogate the random kids at dinner night? Though, to be fair, they were random kids in his house. But she refused to like the man until she’d talked to Jason about the potential assholeish tendencies.
“He helped me learn some self defence after I got caught up in an akuma attack.” Marinette lies smoothly. Well, it was technically a half truth. But the Waynes didn’t need to know that she was always caught up in akuma attacks.
“Akuma?” Mr. Wayne asks, and Marinette glances at Jason with a frown. Had he not told his father about anything? Not even the basics?
“Wait, is that what the thing that flooded Paris is called?” Dick asks suddenly and Marinette nearly flinches from the memory. That was one of the akumas that still gave her nightmares. One of the ones that was burned in the back of her eyelids when all she wanted was to sleep. And not think about bloated corpses and dead classmates for one goddamn minute. She lets out a steadying breath, glancing at Jason whose face had changed from annoyance to concern. She resists the urge to roll her eyes. She could talk about akumas. It was the past. Sure, she had refused all of the therapy options her parents gave her and Adrien, but she didn’t need it. She was fine.
“Yeah. Technically, her akumatized name was Siren. But, the general term for those attacks was ‘akuma’.” She says, gripping her fork a little tighter than necessary, grounding herself with Tikki’s reassuring nudges from inside her purse.
“There were more?” Dick asks, his eyes wide. Marinette glances at Jason and raises an eyebrow. Why had he not said anything? He’d been there for an entire month of Hawkmoth’s reign. He’d seen dozens of akuma attacks. Jason shrugs. Thank Jay. Super helpful.
“When you get down to it, there were probably hundreds if not thousands more. Some people, like Siren, were turned into the same akuma several times. Some people became a different akuma when they were akumatized again. I think it just depended on the person or their issue.” Marinette explains, hating how dry her mouth felt all of a sudden. She could talk about this. She could. So why was everything a little too bright? Why was the sound of forks against plates a little too loud?
“Did the Justice League stop it?” Damian asks, though by his tone, he seems to already know the answer. Odd.
“No, the local heroes did. Ladybug and Chat Noir.” Marinette says, ignoring the constricting feeling in her chest.
“Why-” Mr. Wayne starts, but Jason clears his throat. Everyone glances at him, and Marinette is unsurprised to see the flicker of anger in his eyes. Especially after she glances at Adrien and sees how pale he’s gotten. She kicks him lightly under the table to get his attention, frowning at him in a silent question. He nods, slightly. She purses her lips, not believing for a second that he was actually okay. But they could talk later. Away from eager ears.
“I’m sure you remember what Dick said about my phone call from when I first arrived in Paris. Marinette and Adrien dealt with attacks like that interrupting their day to day lives from thirteen to sixteen. I get that you’re not the best at knowing when to drop the damn topic, but I really think you should drop the damn topic.” Jason says, and though he’s smiling, Marinette can see the danger behind it. The warning. ‘Drop it, or I’ll make you’.
“My apologies, it was just so interesting.” Mr. Wayne says and this time Marinette winces at the falseness in his voice. And the smile on his face. God, this man could not have lasted a day in Hawkmoth’s Paris.
---
Finally, finally, dinner was over. After the akuma talk ceased, it was extremely awkward. Mr. Wayne looked like he would rather be anywhere else. And Marinette couldn’t blame him, wanting nothing more than to get back to her hotel room and away from the constant lack of real emotion on the eldest Wayne’s face. It was tiresome, just watching him.
“Thanks again, for having us.” Marinette says, mostly directing her comment to Dick and Alfred. Alfred just nods.
“Of course! Come back any time. Really soon, actually, so we can work more on the trapeze. I can’t lose my new trapeze buddy.” Dick says with a wide smile. Marinette holds back a sigh, nodding instead. She liked Dick, she did. But she’d definitely have to make sure that Mr. Wayne wouldn’t be around. She still wasn’t sure what to think of him.
“You should also spar with me, some time.” Damian speaks up and Marinette blinks in surprise.
“Spar. With...you?” She says, tilting her head in confusion. That came out of nowhere.
“Yes. You took down Todd easily, and I am far superior. You would actually have a challenge if we sparred.” He says. She smirks, and suddenly, with a burst of confidence she didn’t know she had, says:
“Sure thing, Pretty boy.” Before turning and walking straight out the door. The second she’s outside, she drops her head into her hands. “I can’t believe I just said that.” She mumbles under her breath.
“Pretty boy?” Adrien says with a smirk, she glares at him and moves down the front steps.
“Fuck you.” She says, no real venom in her voice. The boy knew how she got around crushes. He’d seen it firsthand. With him. With Luka. With Kagami. With the girl with bright green eyes who worked at the coffee shop across the street from the bakery. She was an absolute disaster. He was worse, but still. He wasn’t the one with the quickly developing crush on the youngest Wayne.
“Pretty boy?” Jason asks, a scowl on his face as he catches up to the two.
“Not another word, Jason.” She scowls at him, crossing her arms defiantly. He holds his hands up in surrender.
“Sure.” He says. Her mind rushes suddenly to her previous thought. Youngest Wayne. Damian Wayne. Hadn’t Lila- she snorts, before erupting into uncontrollable laughter, ignoring the worried looks from Adrien.
“I- oh my god, Jay.” She manages to say, straightening up and following Jason to the car he was borrowing to drive them back to the hotel.
“I’m completely lost.” He says.
“Join the club.” Adrien adds, and Marinette just laughs again.
“Your little brother is Damian Wayne.” She says, as if it should be obvious. Jason doesn’t get it, and neither does Adrien. But after a moment-
“Oh my god, that’s hilarious!” Adrien cries, letting out a chuckle. Jason huffs as the trio get into the car.
“Care to share with the class?” He asks, and Marinette snorts.
“Absolutely not, I dislike the majority of those people.” She says, referring to the group who was hopefully already in their rooms and not in the lobby of the hotel. “Now it’s funny that your brother is Damian Wayne because Lila made us come to Gotham instead of New York and London, because she’s dating him.” She explains and Jason scoffs.
“Yeah right.”
“Obviously she’s not actually dating him, Jay. But it’s freaking hilarious that she thinks she’s gonna get away with it. He definitely goes to Gotham Academy, and people are definitely going to call her out.” She says, not even trying to hide the absolute glee she’s feeling. If there was ever a time for all of Lila’s lies to come crashing down around her, now would be good. When she can’t just run away and claim Marinette set it up. If people Marinette didn’t even know called Lila out, well, that would be irrefutable evidence, right?
“Her regime is gonna topple and I’m gonna take you guys out for ice cream to celebrate.” Jason declares and Marinette laughs again. She was so against the idea of Gotham originally, but now, with Jason at their sides again, she’d decided that it wasn’t so bad. Suddenly remembering what had been on her mind most of the night, she turns to Jason.
“Jay, I have a serious question. And I know it’s a little hard to talk about but just know that we’re here for you to support you, and that we’ll figure out a way to make sure you and your brothers are safe and-”
“Whoa, Pix, calm down kiddo. You’re rambling again.” He says gently, furrowing his eyebrows. He pulls the car over to the side of the road and turns to put his full attention on the two. “What’s bothering you?” He asks.
“Is Mr. Wayne abusive?” She asks and Jason blinks. “I saw how hesitant you were to call him your father, and you were tense around him a lot of the night. And I don’t think the man had one legitimate expression all night. He was acting the whole time.” Marinette says, looking at him worriedly. “Look, Jay, I don’t necessarily want to make a habit of putting billionaires in jail, but I’d do it for you.”
“Is he- you would-” Jason stops and lets out a breath, obviously trying to compose himself. “No, kiddo, he’s not.” He finally says. Marinette frowns.
“Really?” She asks, and he sighs.
“Yeah, look. Our relationship has been...rough, for a couple years. We had a sort of falling out when I was a teenager and I stopped talking to him for several years. We reconnected a while ago, but it’s still rocky at times. I don’t usually call him dad or father or anything. He’s just Bruce, or B, to me.” Jason explains and Marinette nods, letting out a small sigh of relief.
“I was worried, Jay.” She admits, and Jason grins at her before pulling away from the curb again.
“I didn’t even catch on.” Adrien says with a frown. Marinette rolls her eyes, smiling at him with fondness.
“Course you didn’t Kitty. Reading people isn’t really your strong suit.” She says with a small smile. He huffs, but nods in agreement.
“True.” He says and Marinette laughs. She could officially take Bruce Wayne off her ‘threat to be dealt with immediately’ list and move him to ‘possible future annoyance’ list. A big improvement for the man, and it would mean she wouldn’t be as tense around him the next time she saw him.

rafebarry prompt: not canon compliant but rafe and barry are trying to get away from ward but barry gets hurt so rafe begs sarah + pouges (not on good terms w each other) to help them escape bc he loves barry<33
just a little something i thought about! totally up to you on how this all goes down if you decide to write it, anything you write is amazing !!
this was a stupid fucking idea. stupid, stupid, stupid. rafe knew from the beginning, he should’ve never agreed to this.
there aren’t many things that he and barry don’t agree on, surprisingly. even if they start off disagreeing about something, they generally always end up on the same page. but this plan had been something they’d gone back and forth on, never settling on a definitive decision.
in the end, barry had simply manhandled rafe over to the place he’d formerly called home - before ward booted his ass out - and waltzed them through the front door like they owned the place.
all to steal from ward, to get more money for coke and groceries (re: booze and hot pockets) and whatever other fleeting indulgences they could think of.
rafe had disagreed with this plan throughout its development and execution, not wanting to cross the one and only person in the entire world who scares him: ward cameron. and he’d been right to, because now barry is gasping for air, holding his side while blood spills from between his fingers.
they’re racing through the woods, trying to get as far away from ward’s long-range hunting rifle as they can.
rafe doesn’t know if ward knew he was barry’s companion in this little venture. he’d insisted they wear bandanas over their faces, but rafe is pretty sure ward would know his son in a heartbeat regardless.
he doesn’t even want to think about it. about the fact that ward shot barry, or that he probably would’ve shot rafe too if rafe hadn’t had the presence of mind to shove both barry and himself out of the nearest window, plunging into the bushes below before ward could get off another shot.
another shot on the person he more than likely knew to be his son.
ward had continued taking shots as rafe dragged barry across the yard and into the treeline, disappearing from view.
now, they’re back at the main road, barry collapsing against a tree as he clenches his hand around the wound in his side.
“let me see,” rafe demands, kneeling down and peeling up barry’s shirt despite barry shaking his head.
“ain’t got time, country club,” barry wheezes, trying to push rafe back so he’ll stand up and keep moving.
rafe doesn’t budge, just swipes at the blood with his shirt sleeve to get a better look at the wound. the bullet just grazed him, but it’s enough to warrant stitches at the very least.
“you’re not going to make it to the emergency room like this,” rafe comments absentmindedly, pulling out his phone a firing off a text to topper letting him know he’s going to need to borrow his car.
barry manages to push rafe back an inch this time, shaking his head furiously. “ain’t no way i’m goin’ to no damn hospital. i ain’t got insurance and your daddy done cut you off months ago. how you gonna pay for my little siesta in the ER with them empty pockets?”
and okay, he has a point. rafe will admit that. not to mention, ward has people all over the OBX, and if he sends out word about looking for his son, they’ll surely be caught if they’re trapped in the emergency room.
there’s only one other place rafe can think to go. one place where ward won’t know to look, one place where barry can get some medical help without having to shell out a fortune.
rafe may have to grovel a bit (or a lot), but he’ll do it. damn it, he’ll fucking do it because barry is going to bleed out if he doesn’t and that would really fucking suck because rafe was just starting to sort of like him.
he must’ve said that last part out loud, because barry manages to glare at him and say, “quit that shit. we been dating for a year, dickhead.”
then barry sort of slumps to the side, and rafe has to all but carry him to topper’s place.
rafe has just gotten the keys topper keeps in the cupholder into the ignition when he looks at his phone, seeing a text from top.
can’t let u borrow the car tonight, have a thing in the morning. srry bud.
rafe glances over at barry, who’s blacked out in the passenger’s seat, fresh blood still seeping out of his shirt.
“sorry about this, top,” rafe says to himself, turning the key and hearing the engine roar to life. “i’ll get you back later.”
he peels out of the driveway, speeding down the familiar streets until they become more and more unfamiliar, figure eight bleeding into the cut.
he zooms past more and more unfamiliar houses, searching for the only one he knows, starting to feel hopeless, starting to really worry that barry might actually die in the passenger’s seat of his car.
or topper’s car, rather. it’d be super annoying to have to apologize for that on top of having to apologize for stealing it in the first place, to be honest.
then suddenly, rafe is idling outside a house that is both familiar and unfamiliar. the few times he’s been here before, he’d been fucked up beyond belief and fueled by violent anger. it seems almost foreign to him now, while he’s sober as a judge (only due to his current circumstances, mind you) and fueled by nothing but pure adrenaline.
rafe practically drags barry to the house. there are all sorts of lights on, both inside and out, and rafe can hear the sounds of music and laughter drifting out from an open window nearby.
he only hesitates for a moment before circling around the house and banging on the door.
john b answers the door with a smile, a small wad of cash in his hand, clearly expecting some sort of food delivery. his smile fades instantly when he realizes it’s not his pizza or what the fuck ever, and is in fact rafe cameron and a half-dead barry.
“no,” is all john b says before trying to shut the door. rafe kicks his leg out, foot jamming between the door and the frame, preventing john b from closing it.
“fuck off, rafe,” john b grunts as he tries to shut the door. rafe can hear concerned voices from inside the house. “you’re not dragging us into whatever shit this is! literally fuck. off.”
“sarah!” rafe shouts, ignoring john b’s protests. “sarah!”
footsteps, and then sarah is pushing john b out of the way gently, looking at rafe in confusion, then at barry in horror.
“rafe? oh my god, what happened?”
sarah ushers them into the house, and rafe is literally dragging barry at this point. still, no one helps him get barry onto the couch. he manages regardless, but he’s panting when it’s all said and done, sliding down onto the floor with a grunt.
“i need you to help him,” rafe says, and he’s looking at pope, who’s seated in the corner beside jj, a guitar that he’s no longer strumming still sitting in his lap.
but john b is the one to answer, shaking his head. “no. besides, we can’t even help him. we don’t know how to do shit like that.”
“he does,” rafe says, still looking at pope, who’s now looking at barry thoughtfully.
“what?” kie laughs, looking bewildered. “pope may be smart, yeah, but he doesn’t have a medical degree. this guy needs a doctor.”
“i know how,” pope sighs, and rafe suppresses a smug smile. “i volunteered at the hospital last summer, remember?”
“and you knew this how?” john b asks rafe, accusatory.
“he was on my rounds once,” pope says calmly, leveling rafe with an unreadable look. “alcohol poisoning and a drug overdose all in one night.”
rafe fights the urge to look away, choosing instead to shrug nonchalantly.
“just another night in the cut, right?” rafe asks, arching one brow. “look, we can dredge up my poor life choices later, if it’ll make you all feel better and get your fucking panties out of a wad. but right now he needs help, so are you going to give him that or are you going to let him bleed out on your ugly ass couch?”
“i say let him bleed out,” john b snaps, clearly irked by rafe’s demands and insults.
rafe wants to knock the guy’s teeth down his throat, but he just breathes steadily through his nose. just like barry has been teaching him. “we can’t go to a hospital. no insurance, and ward’s hunting us down as we speak. so do i want to fucking be here? no. but i have to, so name your fucking price and we’ll pay it.”
“besides,” rafe continues, turning his eyes to sarah, challenging her, “you’re not just going to let someone die, are you?”
sarah narrows her eyes, hands perched on her hips. “no, that’s more your style, isn’t it?” then, she looks at pope. “come on, help him. he isn’t dying on john b’s couch. that’s way too creepy for me to deal with right now.”
pope nods and disappears from the room as sarah and john b bicker quietly. kie and jj glare daggers at rafe, while also eyeing barry, lying on the couch looking far more dead than alive.
when pope reappears, he has a first aid kit in one hand and a sewing kit in the other. he shoos rafe out of the way. rafe just scoots a little further to the left to give pope room, but stays close to barry.
“rafe, we need to talk,” sarah says after a moment. “outside?”
rafe shakes his head. “not until i know he’s okay.”
the room falls silent, and rafe looks around, glaring. “what, it’s illegal to care about people now? fuck off.”
“so do you want us to like… give you a room, or something? maybe some champagne and rose petals? we could get some ambient beats going, really set the mood, you know- ”
kie throws a pillow at jj, effectively shutting him up. “gross, jj. don’t put that image into my head.”
“look, whatever,” sarah interrupts, rolling her eyes. “but once he’s patched up, we’re having a conversation.”
rafe puts his hands up in mock surrender. “your house, your rules.”
he’s only trying to irritate john b, and it works. rafe smiles to himself when john b starts grumbling about it being his house actually, storming off to his room, undoubtedly to pout. sarah follows, and kie and jj trail after them a moment later. jj is the only one to look back, throwing a concerned look in pope’s direction before inevitably disappearing into john b’s bedroom.
rafe looks back at barry, all smugness disappearing from his expression when he sees just how bad the wound really is now that pope has cleaned it up a bit.
he really doesn’t care if he has to talk to sarah later - all he knows is that if barry dies, he’s sure as hell not going to be outside listening to sarah bitch at him when it happens.
rafe takes one of barry’s hands, ignoring the way pope’s eyes flicker down to the movement before returning to his work, remaining silent.
“you love him,” pope says suddenly, still not looking at rafe. he’s began sewing up the wound, his hands surprisingly steady.
“what’s it to you?” rafe asks defensively, but he curls his fingers tighter around barry’s, a little possessively.
pope just shrugs, like he doesn’t really care one way or another. “just an observation.”
he ties off the thread and cleans up the remaining dried blood from the wound with a rubbing alcohol-soaked cotton ball before applying a bandage and tugging barry’s shirt back down. it’s a lost cause, the shirt, but rafe appreciates the gesture anyway.
“it’s good to know you care about someone other than yourself,” pope says, finally turning towards rafe and giving him a hard look. “maybe there’s hope for assholes like you after all.”
rafe opens his mouth to say something bitchy back, but pope just claps him on the shoulder, stands and cracks his back, then leaves the room.
it’s just rafe and a passed out barry now. at least this way he can openly worry about his boyfriend, gnawing on his lip as he thinks about what it’ll be like if barry doesn’t make it.
rafe has been living with barry for some time now, ever since ward kicked him out. it’d started with sarah - she’d ran away and no one had known where. rafe ended up finding out through topper, but never seemed to get around to telling ward. don’t ask him why - he really doesn’t fucking know.
after sarah’s disappearance, ward’s temper reached its peak and rafe was kicked out mere weeks after his sister had gone missing. he stayed with topper for a while at first, often making trips to the cut to harass the dirty pogues who’d whisked his sister away from their supposedly happy family and her happy relationship with one of rafe’s closest friends.
when topper’s mother got sick of rafe loitering around her house, the only place left to go was barry’s. it’d helped that they’d already been screwing around for a while, initially so rafe could get discounts on coke, then turning into a full blown something over time.
their relationship has a definition now. barry had manhandled rafe into bed one evening and declared them to be officially official. meaning a relationship, meaning a bunch of figuring shit out as he goes because rafe sure as shit has never done any of this before.
he’s also pretty sure other relationships don’t involve hard drugs and robberies and shootings, so he thinks he’s got a few more obstacles to overcome than most when traveling the rocky road of a first relationship.
“rafe?” sarah calls, suddenly re-entering the room. “think we can talk now?”
rafe looks at her for a long moment. she looks different - happier, maybe? rafe wonders if he looks the same. maybe not right at this moment, with barry’s limp, clammy hand resting between his own, waiting on bated breath for barry’s eyes to blink open.
the need to hear barry’s slow drawl of coUnTrY cLUuUb is almost too much to bear, so rafe cuts his line of thought off, nods at sarah in answer to her question, and follows her outside.
they don’t talk for a long while, just staring out across the yard in silence. it’s not uncomfortable, per se, but rafe still wishes she’d say what she wants to say so he can get back inside. back to barry.
“this is a one time deal, you know,” sarah finally tells him.
when he looks at her from the corner of his eye, she’s staring directly at him, her expression serious. “i know,” is all he can come up with.
“i expect a thank you, just so you know.”
“i’m not thanking you,” rafe says immediately.
sarah actually smiles, just a little bit, then parrots back, “i know.”
“what did you want to talk to me about?” rafe asks eventually, pulling a cigarette from the pack he keeps in his pocket and lighting up.
sarah doesn’t answer for a moment, then shrugs, looking down at her hands. “i hate you, for the way you’ve treated me. and my friends. but sometimes i miss you. i miss my brother. what happened to you?”
it’s almost like she’s just thinking aloud, but rafe knows it’s a genuine question. one he doesn’t have an answer to. because he doesn’t really know where he went wrong - just that he could never seem to get anything right. not as a kid, not as a teenager, and not now as an adult.
“i don’t know,” rafe answers honestly, for the first time in a long time. he doesn’t know what else to say, so he tells her, simply, “but thank you for helping anyway.”
yeah, yeah. he wasn’t going to thank her, blah blah blah. whatever, shit happens.
the back door swings open, and rafe and sarah turn to watch barry stumble out of the house, still clutching his side but finally looking like a living, breathing person instead of a corpse.
“ain’t i tell you them things gonna rot your lungs?” is the first thing he says, plucking the cigarette from rafe’s lips and taking a drag.
rafe rolls his eyes, but lets barry rope him into a hug, careful not to bump into his wound.
“ugh, gross,” sarah huffs, making fake gagging noises before going back inside. rafe doesn’t miss the small smile that’s playing on her lips, though, and he’s suddenly filled with warmth.
it’s disgusting, and he’s surprised that he’s missed it. and that maybe, deep down, he’s missed his sister, too.
she said this is a one time deal, but maybe there’s a possibility of reconciliation. it’s a thought to revisit at a later date, rafe decides, wanting to focus on this moment right here, where barry is blessedly alive and safe.
so rafe just leans down a bit and buries his face in barry’s neck, taking a deep breath, feeling barry inhale and exhale around his cigarette as they stand in each other’s arms, companionable silence falling around them.
“you done saved my life, country club,” barry says, the first to break the silence.
rafe smiles against barry’s neck at the nickname, pressing a kiss to barry’s pulse point before pulling back a bit to look at him.
“yeah, you’re the only one who knows how to empty the septic tank,” rafe replies, deadpan.
barry throws his head back and laughs, one hand coming up to cradle the back of rafe’s head, pulling him down gently so he can press a kiss to his forehead.
“damn good thing you saved my ass, then.”
“sure is.”
when barry kisses rafe, he tastes like tobacco and blood, sour and metallic on his tongue. rafe should think it’s gross, but he just kisses barry harder, trying to scrub all the thoughts he’d had about barry dying from his memory.
it helps to have barry here, real and solid in rafe’s arms, lips soft against his own.
“can we get outta this shithole and back to our shithole?” barry asks when they separate, his chest rising and falling rapidly. “‘m pretty sure them shits would object to us christening their couch.”
rafe, for a moment, is tempted to try just to see what kind of reaction he’d get. but instead of following the urge, he lets barry guide him back to topper’s stolen car.
“who’s ride is this?” barry asks when they’re both buckled in, backing away from the routledge property.
“topper’s,” rafe explains, smirking to himself. “i, uh. borrowed it for the time being.”
“for the time being?” barry questions, and when rafe looks at him, barry is looking right back, brows raised and amusement written all over his face.
“mhm,” rafe confirms, matter-of-factly.
barry just glances around the car, a slow smirk spreading across his lips. “sweet ride. think ol’ topper’d object to a little christening, too?”
rafe starts the car, letting his own smirk grow. “as a matter of fact, i think he would.”
barry blinks at him, then stares at his nails casually.
“so where we gonna park her?”
rafe just smiles, peeling away from the routledge house, cruising into the night.
“i know just the place.”

……………………………………………………………………
“Hey, good you're all here,” Meredith said as she came and the attending’s lounge.
Everyone was eating lunch. Link and Amelia were with Scout in a highchair next to Cormac, while a pregnant Jo and Maggie sat on the couch with Winston, Alex, and Luna.
“So, as you all know, Carolyn, Derek's mother, is coming to town next weekend,” Meredith said, folding her hands together as she stood in front of the group.
“Yep, we've got it all planned out,” Link said, as he offered some of his pasta to one-year-old Scout. “We’ll have a dinner party, where she will get to meet her new grandson, and the other kids get to play with Grandma before following up with desserts and a quick exit, short, simple, and fun.”
“And our emergency get away excuse is an MVC in the ER with encephalitis and multiple broken bones,” Amelia said with a smile as she fed Scout another spoon full of applesauce.
“Either that or Jo going into labor, it depends on the situation,” Link said as he and Jo exchanged a look of agreement.
“We have a secret text code and everything,” Jo said as she nodded and she rubbed her eight-month pregnant belly while Alex bounced Luna in his arms.
“I, for one, am looking forward to meeting your ex-mother-in-law,” Cormac said with a smile as he looked over at Meredith.
The two of them had been dating for a little while, and although things were still new they were beginning to introduce each other to the other’s extended families.
“Well, plans have kinda changed,” Meredith said, a little hesitant before she dropped the bomb on them. “Your sisters got word of Carolyn's trip, and now Nancy is tagging along with her family, kids and all.”
“Nancy is coming!” Amelia said, putting down the spoon and sitting up.
“I've met Nancy. Are you sure this is a good idea?” Link asked, looking between Amelia and Meredith.
“Yeah, she did spend the entire time she was here calling me a slut,” Meredith countered despite the hesitant look on her face.
“This is bad,” Amelia said as she started to freak out. “Nancy is the worst of them all.”
“She also wants her kids to spend more time with their cousins,” Meredith argued. “And I don't think she'd do anything too bad with the kids around.”
“So you're okay with her comparing her perfect kids to our four messy kids because that is exactly what she's going to do,” Amelia said, pointing the spoon at Meredith to make her point.
“Well, Luna's a bit fussy, so we should go put her down for a nap,” Alex said despite the completely calm baby in his arms as he got up off the couch and pulled Jo up with him.
“Wait, just hang on for a second,” Meredith said to him, holding up her hand.
“Why none of this concerns us?” Alex said, of course, as Meredith’s best friend, he was willing to go to dinner with her and her family, but not if he could avoid it.
“Well, I was hoping to make a dinner party out of it and extend the invitation to you, Jo, Maggie, and Winston as well,” Meredith said, plastering on a smile and trying to seem like it was a good idea.
“No, that is a terrible idea,” Jo said, looking over at her wide eyed.
“It can't be that bad, I’ll make my lasagna, and I think it would be nice to meet Derek's mom and his other sisters,” Maggie said with a shrug, that jostling Winston from where he had pressed his head against her five-month pregnant belly. “Sorry, honey.”
“My other sisters are nothing like Derek and I,” Amelia added angrily, staring at the applesauce before Link put his arm around her shoulders.
“Exactly,” Jo said, nervously rubbing her belly. “And besides, every time we have a dinner party at your place, it ends in disaster.”
“That's not true,” Alex said, only for Jo to give him a look.
“Oh really, what about the dinner party a couple of years ago where Callie brought Penny?”
“That was an extenuating circumstance,” Meredith countered.
“What about that game night that you tried to host two years ago? Half of you didn't show up, which I guess it's a good thing as I heard from Jackson that it was a huge disaster,” Jo said, waving her arm around gesturing to the magnitude of the disaster.
“Again, there were kind of extenuating circumstances there,” Maggie argued again before Jo cut her off.
“What about all the times we tried to get together the year Meredith was gone or that time your mom came into town and made lasagna. This group and dinner parties have a bad track record, and this is one train wreck that I do not want to be a part of.”
“Well, suck it up, Karev. You're part of the family now, and that means whether you like it or not, we are all going to at least attempt to have a nice time at this dinner party,” Meredith said, glaring at Jo before she looked over at everybody else. “So, is everyone on board?”
“I think we can make it work,” Maggie agreed with a nod from Winston.
“I will help you cook, and I'm sure we can prevent any disasters,” Winston said, kissing Maggie's cheek before he leaned down and kissed her stomach.
“I'll be there,” Cormac said, getting up and putting his hand on Meredith's back. “And I'll do everything in my power to make sure things go over smoothly.”
“What do you think?” Link asked as he looked over at Amelia.
“I am going to reserve my right to bail at a moment's notice and there better be cake,” Amelia said, pointing to Meredith, who nodded in a quick agreement.
“I think we can make it too,” Alex said, looking over at Jo for confirmation. “I’ll rub your feet and change all of Luna’s dirty diapers for a week.”
“Okay fine,” Jo said, crossing her arms before pointing a finger at Meredith. “But when everything goes to hell, and you, Alex, Maggie, and Amelia are all falling apart upstairs drinking and eating cake because shit hit the fan. I'm going to be in the backyard with your kids and getting them hopped up on candy.”
“You can't feed my baby candy Jo,” Amelia said, looking over at her.
“He’s a year old, I can feed him ice cream,” Jo countered, raising her eyebrow over at Amelia as Link laughed before Amelia silenced him with a look.
“Well, you better keep the candy in your car, Karev, because you're not going to need it. This dinner party is going to be great!” Meredith insisted as if she was trying to convince herself.
She gave Cormac a quick kiss before she left and Alex raced after her and followed her out of the room.
“Are you sure that this is a good idea? I mean, I know your ex-mother-in-law is pretty nice, but Jo’s kinda right about our history with dinner parties.”
“It's just Carolyn, and she's on good terms with both Amelia and me, and Nancy has promised to be on her best behavior,” Meredith insisted with an optimistic smile that definitely looked out of place. “It's going to be great.”
It was not, in fact, great.
Jo balanced the four cartons of ice cream in her arms. She pulled out the bottle of tequila from the fridge for Meredith and the bottle of sparkling cider for Amelia and Maggie and handed both to Alex. She slowly walked over to the drawer to grab a hand full of spoons and balanced the bowls in her other arm. Given what happened that night, she figured that all the kids deserve endless ice cream.
“Why don't I help you with those,” Alex said, he held Luna in one arm and reaching out to take the ice cream carton from her before she turned away.
“No, set Luna down, and go and take the drinks upstairs and comfort Meredith. She needs you right now. I got ice cream. I’m fine,” Jo said, shoving him off with her hips and a wave of her hand.
Alex tilted his head and smiled as he took the drinks and set Luna down. She toddled over to the back door, calling out for Scout. “Out, out?”
“Lu Lu,” Scout called out to her as she giggled and waved her arms excitedly as she walked into the backyard.
She had started walking a few weeks ago, and since then, Jo and Alex could barely keep up with her. They knew that all of the adults and older kids outside would keep an eye out for her until Jo came out. They both watched Luna through the window for a moment as she and Scout met in a hug.
“Are you sure it's okay?” Alex asked again, catching her before she moved to follow Luna as he reached out and placed his hands on her belly. “I should probably help you out with the kids, Mer will be fine with just Maggie and Amelia.”
“Alex, I told you it's fine. Meredith isn't stealing you away from me. You're helping out our friend now go,” Jo said as she grabbed the bowls and waddled towards the laundry room to head out to the backyard.
“Are you at least going to say I told you so?”
“Maybe next week, once the sting wears off,” Jo said as she turned around to look at him with a smirk before she opened the screen door.
Jo waddled out into the backyard where Link, Hayes, and Winston, were calming down the kids. They were all upset at the things Nancy had said to Meredith, especially Zola. With the bowls in one hand and the ice cream in the other also balanced on her belly, Jo felt the baby kick against the ice cream shuffling the stack of cartons.
“I know it's kind of cold, just hang on, squirt,” Jo said as she put the ice cream on the table and sat back in the lounge chair.
With extra reassurance, cuddles, and ice cream, the kids were doing better. Soon all of them were scattered around the yard. Zola was eating ice cream in the chair next to her while Bailey and Ellis were playing on the play center with Liam and Austin. Jo sat with her carton of rocky road as she fed Luna and Scout a spoonful. She watched her daughter and godson take in the cold treat with wide eyes and exciting squeals. As soon as they were finished with their bite, they would open their mouths and silently demanded more. Their little bodies were vibrating with the amount of sugar.
“Are you sure they're okay up there? What Nancy said was pretty harsh, maybe I should go talk to Meredith,” Cormac asked as he took a step towards the house.
“No, they're fine, trust me, if they wanted us up there, we would be, but they just need some time to talk it out amongst themselves,” Jo said, as she fed Luna another spoonful of ice cream.
“I just feel awkward and a little out of place standing around here. I know Meredith and I have only just started dating, but I feel like I should be there for her more,” Cormac said, staring down at his bowl.
“Yeah, I get that,” Link said, with a nod as he ate some of his own ice cream. “But you were there and stood up for Meredith in front of Nancy when it counted and she appreciates that, but now she needs time to complain about it with her brother and sisters.”
“How long do you think before they're dancing out?” Jo asked, tilting her head up to look at the room where they were all probably still drinking.
“I give it thirty minutes tops,” Link said with a shrug.
“Might be a bit more than that,” Winston said as he took a sip of his beer. “I know how Maggie gets when she's angry, she can rant for at least a half-hour.”
“Yeah, she's pretty good at bringing the thunder,” Jo said as they all chuckled.
She looked around the backyard and smiled. A few years ago, it would have just been her heading back to the loft alone, maybe with Stephanie, maybe not, but now she had Link and Cormac and Winston. Alex, Meredith, Amelia, and Maggie had always been their own little family, and Jo now realized she had her own little in-law party tonight.
“Hey, Aunt Jo,” Zola said, coming over with an empty bowl and putting it on the side table. “Can I use your phone and run inside and grab my speaker so we can have our own dance party?”
“You can use my phone Zola, I've got a really cool playlist I'm sure you'll like,” Liam offered, coming over and pulling out his phone and handing it over to Zola.
“Yeah, that sounds fun,” Jo said before Zola ran inside to grab her speaker.
“I hope this playlist of yours isn't too offensive?” Cormac warned Liam.
“Relax. It's all clean music, I promise,” Liam said as he held up his arms in defense.
“They seem to be getting along pretty well,” Link noted as Zola came back out, and they set up the speaker together.
“Yeah, sometimes a little too well,” Cormac said as Liam and Zola giggled together.
The four of them sat there eating ice cream and talking as they watched the kids run around and dance to the music. It was so adorable to watch Scout and Luna dance to the music. However, it was a little embarrassing when Luna started twerking something Jo had definitely not taught her how to do.
“Hey Liam, what song is this?” Link asked as he sat up his head lately bopping to the music.
“Um, It's,” Liam paused as he checked his phone. “It’s Sam Smith’s, Make It To Me.”
“Nice, I’ll have to add it to my playlist for tomorrow's surgery,” Link said as he added it to his phone as he looked over at her and raised his eyebrows. “A surgery you could get in on too, Jo. I need a general surgeon.”
“Or you could get in on one of my cases’ the next time I deliver a baby with a broken collar bone,” Jo suggested, smirking at him as she glanced back at Luna just in time to see when I reach for the bullet ice cream almost tipping it on to herself before Jo pulled it out of her reach.
“Ah, that's more of just a Ped’s case,” Link said with a shrug.
“I don't know. It's always good to get a second opinion and you are the bone expert,” Cormac said, tilting his head at Link and taking a sip of his beer.
“Yeah, I just miss working with you. It seems like I never see you anymore,” Link complained with a pout.
“I miss working with you too,” Jo said, sharing his pout. “But it's not like we don't see each other all the time. We still have our Wednesday night playdates and Waffle Sunday.”
“Yeah, but that's with the kids. It's never just the two of us,” Link said with a sigh as Scout came over to him and he picked up his son. “I love our kids, and I love that they're such good friends, but I miss having adult time with my best friend.”
“I miss you too,” Jo said, looking over at him. She rubbed her belly as she felt her baby move around inside of her. “Well, it's not just going to be the two of us, but why don't we carpool to work tomorrow and let Alex and Amelia drive the kids. Then we can get breakfast at the coffee stand before work.”
“Sounds good,” Link said as he gave her a fist bump.
“Luna and Scout’s friendship is just so cute. They're definitely going to grow up and be best friends,” Winston said with a smile as he watched them play together on the grass. “I hope our baby has that.”
“Don't worry, I got you,” Jo said, pointing at her stomach as all of the boys laughed.
“Yeah, it's nice that all of our kids are around the same age and will be in the daycare together,” Winston said, walking over to sit next to her.
“You know, when Amelia told me she was pregnant, I kind of hoped that you and Alex would have a baby too so that our kids could grow up together,” Link that with a smile as he watched Luna and Scout dance together. The two of them had grabbed onto each other's arms and were swaying together.
“Was this before or after you freaked out?” Jo said, raising an eyebrow over at him as the boys Winston and Cormac chuckled.
“It was an unplanned pregnancy. I think I'm allowed to freak out a little bit!” Link said, holding up his hand in defense.
“See, that's the hard thing about moving when your kids are older. They lose touch with their friends, but I’m glad Liam and Austin have always been able to make friends here, although I know they miss their friends back in Switzerland.” Hayes said as he watched his boys play with Zola and Bailey.
“Good friends always have a way of coming back to you,” Jo said as she and Link exchanged a smile.
“Which is why you should scrub in on the surgery with me,” Link said as he leaned forward in his chair.
“I'll think about it,” Jo said, and she did mean it because as much as she loved OB, but there were parts of surgery that she did miss.
“What we need is a case that we can all work together,” Hayes said, leaning forward in his chair.
“Oh yeah, that would be so cool,” Winston said as Jo and Link nodded.
“It'd have to be a pretty specific case,” Jo said that she thought about it. “Like a baby with osteogenesis imperfecta and Mom with a bad heart or something.”
“We could probably all work together on a case with a mom and baby with Achondroplasia,” Link said as he snapped his fingers.
“Yeah, that could be possible,” Winston said, lifting his shoulder in a half shrug. “But that doesn't necessarily mean there's a heart issue.”
“It's going to be a needle in a haystack to find a case, but it would be fun for the four of us to work together,” Hayes said, crossing his arms.
“Well, I'll definitely keep an eye out and hopefully, we get to work together before the two of you go on maternity leave,” Link said, looking over at her and Winston.
“It might have to be after my maternity leave. I don't know how much longer this one's going to stay put,” Jo said as she rubbed her belly again when the baby kicked her. At 36 weeks along, she was ready to be done with her pregnancy.
“Speaking of which, did you and Alex finish the paperwork for your maternity leave.  Maggie and I went over it this afternoon, but it’s just so complicated. You think two world-class surgeons would be able to figure it out, but it's a little beyond us,” Winston said with a shake of his head.
“Yeah, Alex and I struggled with it when we took leave after we adopted Luna and we put in the paperwork for our leave this time around last month. If you want, I could go over it with you tomorrow at lunch,” Jo offered with a shrug, she remembered how dumbfounded Alex was with the paperwork the first time around, and the two of them had spent an embarrassing amount of time trying to figure it out.
“Yeah, thanks,” Winston said, clearly relieved as he relaxed back into his chair.
The four of them continued talking as they watched the kids dance. The warm evening sunset turned into a chilly evening, and they turned on the porch lights and started a campfire getting out marshmallows and making S'mores for the kids. It had been a few hours since the dinner ended and she could tell the boys were getting anxious. Yet, she wasn't too worried, and she knew how these things could go.
“They've been up there quite a while. Should we be concerned?” Winston asked, looking up at the window where the light was on, but none of them could see the shadows through the blind.
Jo didn't realize that they were staring at her as she had her eyes closed and was breathing out and rubbing her stomach as she had a Braxton Hicks contraction.
“Jo, are you okay?” Link asked, getting up and coming to sit next to her, putting his hands over hers on her belly.
Jo smiled as her baby rewarded their Uncle Link with a soft kick against her belly. “I'm fine. It’s just another Braxton Hicks. I've been getting them more frequently these days. What did you ask Winston?”
“I just thought that maybe one of us should go up there and check on them?” Winston said, stared up at the window and absentmindedly picked at the paper on his beer bottle.
“It's probably best just to let them talk it all out,” Jo said as Link nodded in agreement. “Or else Meredith is going to end up in our bed tonight?”
“Wait, what?” Cormac asked, his eyebrows shooting up into his wrinkled forehead.
“Yeah, Meredith does this thing where she comes over to talk to Alex and crawls in bed next to us. She did it after you guys introduced the kids a few weeks ago,” Jo said before she took in Cormac's hesitant look. “Don't worry. It’s completely platonic, if not a bit annoying. They used to kick me out of bed while I was naked.”
“Wait, you were naked?” Link asked, he had heard the story before, but Jo had left that detail out.
“Yeah, she used to toss me whatever shirt was lying on the ground and rip the covers off of me so she could sit next to Alex,” Jo said, waving her hand and trying to dismiss the conversation.
“And Alex let her do that?” Link asked, and Jo could tell that he was shifting into protective big brother mode, so she put a hand on his chest and shook her head.
“Only because Alex was more of a pushover back then and Meredith trampled all over him. It's better now. These days she just crawls in bed next to me and steals all the blankets,” Jo said with a laugh as she remembered how Meredith had crawled into bed with them a couple of days ago. She had woken up in the middle of the night to pee, only to realize that she was sandwiched in between Meredith and Alex.
“Yeah, she does this thing where she grabs the blankets and holds them close to her chest and almost to cocoons herself,” Cormac said with a soft smile on his face. “But sometimes, she'll share her cocoon with me.”
“Eww, Dad, we did not need to know that!” Austin said, making a face from where he was making a S’more with Bailey.
“Sorry,” Cormac said, holding up his hands.
“Maggie does the same thing with her blanket, except she just rolls around when she's asleep until she's a burrito, and sometimes only her head sticks out,” Winston said, getting this far off look of love on his face. “Which is why I think we work together since I love the cold and sometimes only end up sleeping with a sheet.”
“I’m the opposite. Sometimes I’ll just spread out like a starfish. I kinda take up the whole bed, much to Amelia's annoyance, but she does the same thing too, and sometimes I'll wake up with her on top of me with her foot in my face,” Link said, yet he had a happy smile on his face. “So, of course, Scout does the same thing. That's why he loves the crib, as now he can stretch out. He's got to be able to starfish without any of his limbs touching sides.”
“Luna’s like me, she likes to curl up on her side, and Alex is a little in-between. Usually, he sleeps on his back straight as a plank, but then sometimes, I'll wake up, and he will have rolled over in the middle of the night to cuddle up against me. Which is nice, except for the fact that he runs hot, especially at night. It’s like a human sized furnace sleeping next to me. So I've got him up against my back and then this little one up in my ribs, and if she gets out of her crib, Luna will be up against my chest, and I'm trapped,” Jo said with a shake of her head as she affectionately rubbed her belly and smiled down at Luna who was asleep on her chest.
“I like cuddling with you and Luna, Auntie Jo. You’re both so warm and snuggly,” Ellis said, joining the conversation as she came over and crawled up next to Jo and rested her head on her belly as Jo wrapped her arms around her.
“I like snuggling with you too, Ellis,” Jo said, wrapping her arms around her and pressing a kiss to her forehead as Ellis’ eyes fluttered shut.
It was getting late, but it was also a Saturday, and none of the other kids seemed to mind the later hours as they kept playing and roasting marshmallows. Luna had passed out an hour ago, and after she passed out, Cormac took Ellis upstairs and put her to bed. Jo wished she could join them and fall asleep as well. The peaceful night lulled her to sleep, but her Braxton Hicks contractions kept her awake.
“Okay, maybe one of us should go and check on them. It’s getting pretty late,” Link said as he walked around the yard with Scout as he tried to get the toddler to sleep.
“I doubt any of them are going to come out anytime soon. Most likely, they're still holed up in there with their drinks,” Cormac said, glancing up at the window as well.
“We could fake an emergency? That would get them out,” Winston offered with a shrug.
“Yeah, we could say that Jo is in labor?” Cormac asked, raising his eyebrows over at her.
“Your Braxton Hicks were pretty strong earlier. How are you doing now?” Link asked, looking back at her in concern.
“I’m fine!” Jo insisted a little too loudly as Luna let out a sigh, but thankfully, remained asleep. Jo rubbed her hand up and down Luna’s back before she whispered. “They’re not so bad, but let’s not lie and say I’m in labor. I don’t want Alex to freak out again. A week ago, I had a few close Braxton Hicks contractions, and he was sure I was in labor. So he freaked out, running around and talking about all the baby stuff we didn't have yet.”
“Oh yes, I remember it was quite funny to watch,” Cormac said with a laugh, and the rest of the guys had a chuckle as well.
“Yeah, funny for you to watch. Not so funny for me to have to put up with. He was anxious for the rest of the night,” Jo said as she huffed and their chuckling tapered off.
“I’m sure I'll be calm when the time comes. We’ve got everything planned out, so I feel good about it,” Winston said, with a nod, looking sure about it.
Jo, Cormac, and Link all laughed before they exchanged a look. Jo glanced over to the older kids that were playing on the swing set. She didn't want to freak out any of the kids, but they were far enough away that it could work if they didn't play it up too much. So as Link came over to take Luna from her, Jo closed her eyes as she tended up and pretended to have a fake contraction.
“Are you sure you're okay, Jo? That one looked a bit strong,” Cormac said after she pretended it passed and although he seemed a little too happy to be genuinely concerned.
“It was,” Jo said as she decided to pull out the fake tears, which was actually easier for her to do now that she was so hormonal and was something she absolutely did not abuse in any way. “Guys, I think it might be wise for one of you to go get Alex. I think I might actually be in labor.”
“Oh my god,” Link said as he and Cormac rushed over to her, played along. Although when she looked up at Link, he was biting his lip to keep from smiling.
“Oh my god!” Winston said, jumping up from his seat and dropping his beer that spilled on the grass as he rushed over to her as well.
“Alright, Karev, take it easy,” Cormac said as he came over and helped her stand up, letting her lean into him as she pretended to have another contraction.
“Okay, okay, nobody panic,” Winston said, holding up his hands, clearly panicking. “Okay, okay, we need towels, and hot water, and your hospital bag, and Dr. DeLuca, and the hospital!”
Winston ran around the fire once before he started to head towards the house before coming back and then running back again. He ran around like a madman and Jo wasn't sure how long they should let this go. She didn't want to panic Alex or the kids, but it was so funny to watch. Cormac and Link could barely contain themselves, and Jo let out a cry of pain as she faked another one, biting her lip to contain her giggles. However just as Winston ran to go into the house, Link burst out laughing. He laughed so hard that he had to bend over and put down Luna to hold his sides. They all dropped the act and Jo stood up straighter and started laughing along.
Winston paused still in his panic before catching on and glaring at them as he walked back over. “Okay real funny, guys.”
“Dude, the look on your face,” Link said as he imitated Winston’s look before adopting a high-pitched voice. “Oh my god! Get hot water! Get some disinfectant! Get some Iodine!”
“You were worse than Alex was,” Jo said, she had to lean into Cormac because the two of them were all howling with laughter.
“I've seen a lot of panicked fathers in my time and it's never not hilarious,” Cormac said as he laughed so hard, he snorted.
“What's so funny?” Bailey asked, coming over to them as they just continued giggling like school children.
Winston set them with a glare as he sat back down and pouted in his chair. He swiped a new beer before picking up his old one and setting the empty bottle on the side table. Their laughter tapered off and Cormac helped Jo sit back down in the lounge chair as Link handed her Luna, who had thankfully slept through the whole thing.
“I don't be so hard on yourself,” Link said as he reached out to put a hand on Winston’s shoulder. “It's better to get it out of your system now than to be freaked out when Maggie really does go into labor.”
“Link’s right. When Maggie does go into labor, you need to take a deep breath and not panic because if you panic, she is going to panic, and that's the last thing both of you need,” Jo said with a smile as she shook her head.
“Parenting is the most terrifying thing you could ever do, but if you come at it with a level head, you'll do all right,” Cormac said with a nod as he glanced over at his two boys.
“If you guys want a thank you for this little stunt, you’ll be waiting a long time,” Winston said with a shake of his head, but he smiled as they all laughed again.
The screen door slammed and startled all of them as they looked back to see Meredith, Amelia, Alex, and Maggie come out of the house.
“Hi, Mom,” Zola said, running over to her and giving her a big hug. “I hope you're feeling better.”
“I am Zo Zo, and I see you’re doing good too,” Meredith said as she swung her arm over Zola’s shoulders as they walked over.
“We made S’mores and I saved one for you,” Zola said, holding one up for her.
“That's great, thank you,” Meredith said as she hugged her daughter before wobbling a little as Cormac caught her around her waist.
“Oh, the baby and I want a S'more,” Maggie said, her eyes going wide. Winston had got up to hug her and let her take his seat. “Do you think it goes well with cheese?”
Everyone chuckled as Amelia went over to Link, and he passed Scout over to her before wrapping his arms around her waist as they silently greeted each other with a kiss.
Finally, Alex came up to her, falling to his knees in the grass next to her as he leaned in and pressed his nose into her neck, getting tangled up in her hair. “Umm, your hair smells nice.”
Jo smiled as she turned to look at him. His eyes were glazed over and he had this big dopey smile. He leaned in to give her a sloppy wet kiss and she just giggled when he pulled back. She didn't mind that he was completely drunk because of how adorable and happy he looked.
“Come here,” Jo said as she gently scooted forward so as not to jostle Luna.
Alex climbed in behind her as he wrapped his arms around her, placing both of them on her belly as their baby rewarded their dad with a few kicks, and Alex giggled. “There's a fish in your belly.”
“It's not a fish. It’s a baby,” Jo said with a laugh. “Remember, you put them in me.”
“I did?” Alex said as she turned her head back to look at his wide eyed expression. “I love babies, and our baby is going to be so cute, just like Luna. She's so cute, Jo. Sometimes I just look at her, and my heart melts like, like ice cream. She’s like ice cream.”
“Yeah, she is,” Jo said as he ran his fingers through Luna’s short blonde hair. They settled in and she leaned her head back against his chest as he rested his chin on her shoulder.
“How are you doing?” Jo caught Hayes asking Meredith as they stood by the fire while Zola made her another S'more.
Meredith gave a noncommittal response, but Amelia spoke up from where she was sitting with Link and holding Scout.
“We talked shit, and they drank, and we danced, so we're doing a lot better,” Amelia said, giving Link a smile as she leaned in to kiss him again. “Thanks for looking after the kids and stuff.”
“Yeah, thank you,” Meredith added, looking around at all of them as she patted Hayes’s cheek.
“No problem,” Jo said with a shrug. “We kind of had our own little dance party too.”
“Did you have fun,” Alex asked, his voice hot in her ear.
“Yeah, we did,” Jo said, looking around and catching Winston, Link, and Hayes’ eyes. “We had a lot of fun.”

I listened to this
+
it was going on 3am and Harry was finally giving up on the idea of sleep.
he thought he would have fallen asleep by now after the day he had previously. jam packed with photoshoots, interviews, some time at the studio with Mitch and then ended the night with a party. it was seeming like the liquor he downed earlier on, coursing through his veins wasn’t ready to slow anytime soon yet. and he was over it. tossing and turning in his king sized bed since midnight. he sighed roughly to himself the moment his back met the mattress, lying there still now. defeated and annoyed, looking up at the clear, white ceiling above him. with his mind speckled in thought, the real reason why he wasn’t in a heavy slumber right now.
tonight wasn’t the first one without a good night of sleep. this was night five now. with you on his mind and not next to him. and it wasn’t because you miles apart from each other, on different sides of the earth no. you on his mind wasn’t something new or missing you either. but it was different this time around. when a few days ago, that all changed. when he let you walk out that door, because of him.
harry hasn’t seen you or heard from you for nearly a week now. since you stormed out of this room. he remembers the moment, so vividly. it hasnt left his brain, instead embedded itself to remind him of how much of an asshole he truly is. your naked frame scurrying around his room, picking up all your clothes scattered from the events that took place shortly before. with anger, embarrassment, the sadness that you contained by biting your bottom lip. after spilling your heart out to him, that you loved him. breaking the first rule to your arrangement.
you and harry had a very complicated friendship in the last eight months. at first it wasn’t, it was a very traditional one. both of you met at a mutual friends party a year earlier, hitting it off from the start and the rest became history. you two were inseparable, doing everything, literally, together. you were his date to most of his events, went on trips and getaways together, did mundane things like grocery shopping, which was always a experience. you both hung out all the time. smoking together most nights and playing records, while laying on his living room floor. talking about everything to anything. harry even gave you a key and your own spot in his dresser. you two were a dream team, the friendship that many aspired to have. the one that everyone was waiting to watch bloom into something more.
things changed out of the blue one night. you had come over, distraught over a guy that you were seeing for two months who wasn’t ready for anything to go further. Harry and you did the next best thing, passing a blunt back and forth among each other. lying on his living room floor, listening to fleetwood mac faintly in the background. talking over the worthless two months, the piece of shit of a guy Jared was and how finding love in this day and age just didn’t make sense. next thing you knew, Harry’s waist was wrapped in your legs, his weight heavy enough on you as he kissed you hard and long. your fingers twisted in his little dark brown curls at the back of his neck as pulled him back down to you. neither of you knew how it started, what made the sudden change but you never looked back.
this friends with benefits thing went on for eight months, filling in some void that you both were missing. it was great, really great. you had each other whenever you wanted. whatever how long you wanted. nobody knew about it as far as you know. you were careful, even when the need was necessary at strange times or at places other than both your beds. there was one time that harry flew you out to italy for a weekend for nothing but that (and you as a plus one at gucci) it was a weekend that neither of you would admit, still gave you both chills looking back. all around your arrangement worked, it wasn’t a disaster like some of the stories or movies told. it was perfect in every way.
until now. where you both were going through the longest drought to date and feelings were involved.
for harry, the night that you admitted how you felt for him after all this time. it wasn’t that he didn’t feel the same as you, he just wasn’t sure that he did. he needed you more than he realized, more then he wanted to believe. for a while now. he has been denying the change for so long that when he was faced with the reciprocation, he froze and put his guard up. but in all reality, he has been in love with you since the beginning of time.
you were his girl, his person. you knew him in and out, you didn’t care about his status or money. you treated him as harry. your best friend. his number one cheerleader. the hug he needed after a rough day. the laugh he wanted hear before he closed his eyes and when he woke up. the child like heart of yours as you sat in the cart, sneaking candy in the cashier line. the dance partner he needed in the early morning in the middle of the kitchen. his plus one that he was excited to have on red carpet with his arm around. the lips he wanted to kiss, all the time and not just in the moment. so soft and sweet against his. he wanted, needed everything before and after the arrangement. he needed you and he should’ve told you before letting you leave.
in a rush, harry threw his gray duvet off his shirtless himself, sitting up and standing out of his bed. not caring about his hair or the sleep deprivation evident on his face. he threw on his black hoodie, searching for his cream vans and heading down the hall to grab his keys to his Mercedes and out to the driveway he went. on his way to you.
——————————————————————————
not finding the ability to sleep. you were laying on your couch, lights off with only the blue light reflection off the tv screen while aimlessly watching a movie you didn’t catch the title to. this was becoming a ritual for the last few nights. awake past your usual time, feeling it hit hard in the morning. drinking the sleep you missed prior in a paper cup. overwhelmed with the same thoughts from morning to night. you huffed, having enough of it. hastily flicking off the tv by the remote before turning over on the couch, clutching the yellow throw to yourself and closing your eyes tight.
after no calls or texts, a clear indication that it was over. you were feeling like a fool on how much you allowed this to get to you. you shouldn’t be feeling this sad. you finally got your answer. you shouldn’t be missing him. you should be pissed off. mad. you should be going out with your friends and trying to find someone to forget the dreadful blissful months you endured. but you’re not. because you miss him. because you love him. everything little thing about him and he doesn’t feel the same. you’ve never felt so stupid in your life. so confused by everything.
none of it made sense. his response beat the shit out of you. you werent expecting him to love you back but at the same time, you knew there had to be something there. the way things were even when you weren’t tangled up in each other limbs, fucking like rabbits. harry gave you so much confidence that he was feeling the same way about you like you did for him. holding your hand in public, kissing in the most exposed places, never denying that you weren’t his girl when asked at events. instead, his grip on your waist would tighten. he would smile at you, kissing the top of your head. making sure you were okay at all times, keeping his focus on you no matter the situation. when you were alone, he would declare you as his all the time. every fiber of your skin he touched “all mine.” he would say, so low to hear but for your ears only. you wanted it all back. even if it was all for fun and games.
hypothetically kicking yourself for being so brave. for placing your heart on your sleeve for it only to be held by cheap thread. for wanting it back, for wanting to continue the charades because it’s better than nothing at all. you didn’t deserve that. you needed better. someone willing to give you that in reality and not only behind closed doors. someone who is lucky to have you at all times and not when its for a fixing.
you sighed to yourself, rolling back over to glance at your phone on the coffee table. bright in the darkened room, squinting to see, it read now quarter to 4am and you rolled your eyes. done with the fiddle faddle with your thoughts, you needed sleep and you were over allowing this situation to consume you further. rising from the couch, you wrapped the throw over your shoulders to protect you from the chill from here to your bedroom. looking around to make sure all was good before continuing on.
approaching the foyer of where your staircase and living room entrance met. you were startled by hard, repetitive knocks to your front door. you froze where you stood. who could be here at this hour? You thought to yourself. you quietly reached for a vase on a nearby table. creeping closer to the door.
the knock happened again before stopping once more. “love, y/n.” you heard the raspy, tired voice from the other side of the door. it was Harry. “it’me, please open up.”
you bit your lip, rolling your eyes. fuck, you muttered to yourself before placing the vase back down. unlocking the door and flinging it open gently. there he stood in front of you. in your favorite attire, all casual in just a hoodie and joggers that hugged his bottom half just right. his chestnut hair, a mess and disheveled, golden at the top from the porch light above him. scruff peppered around his mouth and along his jaw. his green eyes like daggers on you as he watched you search him, using the time to figure to say hey right. the stare made you feel a bit beside yourself, pulling the throw closer to yourself and over your flimsy pink cami paired with gray sweats. you cleared your throat, looking at the street and breaking the silent stare.
“I hope your not here to get something from me.” you stated, then. looking anywhere but at him like you wanted. taking everything you to keep yourself together as you placed between wanting to yell at him and tell him to never see you again and wanting to pull him in to make up for the lost time. “ha, no.” harry shook his head at your comment. raising his hand to his hair, raking his fingers through it, nervously. “I came m’ere to talk.” he said, “if that’s alright?”
you both stood there for a moment before opening the door further slowly. giving him room to come right in. his cologne of vanilla and sandalwood hitting the brim of your nose the second he slipped by you. something you missed, being caught up in it. you pressed your back against the door, hearing it shut behind yourself as you followed after harry to the living room where he made himself at home. he stood poised next to your gray linen couch, waiting to see you approach the room before he took a seat on it. patting the spot next to him. overwhelmed by the time, by his presence and all the emotions bouncing around like a pin ball machine in your mind and body. you treading carefully around your coffee table, joining him shortly after and becoming leveled with his green orbs.
it was quiet for the first few minutes, and not the comfortable kind that you’d fall into from time to time. watching Harry’s rosy plump lips open and close, seeing his hand rise to them, his index and thumb pinching his bottom lip, struggling with what to say first. tongue tied by the fact that you let him in in the first place. he wasn’t prepared to not be given a fight. he sighed, roughly. “I’ve missed you so much.” he began, taking you by surprise and lacing his fingers with yours.
you shook your head, leaving his grasp before standing up from the couch. “please don’t lie to me, harry.” stopping whatever his plan was firsthand. “I’m not falling into this.. trap. I told you how I felt and that’s that. don’t take it for granted.” harry stood up to meet you, wanting to get closer, pull you closer to him but he left the space for you.
“M’not lying. I missed you.” going on, “I came ‘ere to talk. to tell ya I’m sorry. that I regret the moment that ya walked out the door.” he finished, his eyes never leaving yours for a second as he spoke. you furrowed your brows, the confusion rising again. “why are you sorry? you don’t feel the same and I just have to deal with that. that’s nothing to be–” harry grew closer at the last bit of your speech. cutting in. “but it wasn’t the truth. I do feel the same and I let you leave thinking I didn’t. that’s what I’m sorry about.”
you were stuck. shocked to say the least. you couldn’t believe what just came out of his mouth, but your inner self wasn’t going to let it sink in so easily. “please don’t do this. harry, if you lying to me. I will never forgive you. so please stop.” feeling your eyes becoming glassy as tears threatened the rim. harry shook his head, his hands meeting at the top of your shoulders as he looked you in the eyes. “I won’t stop because I’m not lying.” feeling his hands running down your arms, slow to stop and grab your hands in his. “I love you, y/n. I fucking love you.” you looked up at him at rise in volume at his last words. his eyes searching your face and yours doing just the same. trying to find any flake that this wasn’t real, that what he just said was only in your mind and wasn’t just said into the air. you bit at your now quivering bottom lip, trying to keep yourself together.
“if you’re messing with me, H. I swear to god” needing another reassurance, harry flashed his cheeky infamous smile at the use of his nickname from you. feeling normalcy, before his large, soft hands left yours to scoop your face. tilting it up to his. “I mean it. with everything I have, all I own. I mean it.” he said, “I love you, I always have and will.” his words silver off his lips. you couldn’t explain the feeling that rouse in you but you felt tears, happy ones, beginning to make way down your cheeks. “I love you too.” you muttered softly to harry, him still smiling toothlessly now as his thumbs collected the droplets. before leaning down and capturing your lips with his.
the moment they met, your body responded immediately. rising in heat from head to toe. melting into harry as you wrapped your arms around his neck, pulling him closer to you. one hand still caressing your cheek, while the other dug tightly at your waist. the long days of not being wrapped up, sharing sweet pecks or laughs amongst one another was felt right now. the kiss starting out so sweet and tender, feeling the smiles and hearts combust in happiness. soon were taken over by neediness, lust and desire from the lost time. his tongue running along your bottom lip, asking for entry to deepen the kiss. never feeling something so powerful shared between the two of you. never pulling away long enough to catch breath, harry directed you both towards the couch. his hands clasping are your bum, silently telling you to jump into his arms before settling you both down with him beneath you, straddling his lap.
you let out a breathy moan when his lips met the spot connecting your jaw and neck. peppering kisses along your jawline as your fingers got lost in his thick curls. feeling him smiling against you with every little sound only he could get out of you, marking what belonged to him. he pulled away slightly, having you chase his lips and cheeks and leaving him in a fit of chuckles. understanding the neediness you were trying to release, you could feel his against the inside of your thigh. he placed his hands back on your face, pulling you down to kiss you again, before backing away once more and resting his forehead to yours. “do you want to go upstairs?” you asked, softly. hands flattening at the fabric on his broad chest, straightening his shirt. meeting his gaze, harry smiled slightly, cupping your cheek and bringing your lips to his again. “I’d love to.” his warm, minty breath grazing your mouth. you smiled, then.  before rising off of harry. your feet touching the chill of hardwood floor, standing between his legs before reaching out for him to grab a hold of your hand. allowing you to direct him, hand in hand, up the stairs and to your bedroom.
------------------------------------------------------------
the moment harry and you entered the bedroom. he beaconed you to the bed, immediately bringing you down with him. leaving where you left off moments ago, on harry’s lap, hands in his hair. his green eyes, darkened in lust, smirking up at you before his lips met yours in a slow, sweet embrace.
“I want to take my time with you tonight.” he spoke, breathlessly. Looking up at you, pecking your nose. running his thumbs under eyes, noticing the lack of sleep evident likewise, then along your cheeks and to your bottom lip. “Are you up for that, love?” He asked, like the gentleman he is. Hm?” eyes on you, going in and kissing your collarbone. leaving you to bite back a cross between a whimper and giggle, “please.” you cried.
”good.” he muttered, softly. smirking and placing both of his hands on you bum, squeezing light before rolling you over so quickly you couldn't register what was happening until you were lying flat on your back, him hovering you now and his teeth were nipping at you ear. you squealed and wiggled beneath his heavy, toned body, and his mouth left kisses on your neck, your collar bone, back to your lips again. one of his tattooed arms, rested next your head, steadying himself while the other roamed your body. savoring any exposed skin of yours on his fingertips. your body following the feeling of his hands as they ran along it, up and down your waist, to your hip. moaning lightly into one of the grazes of your lips, harry's own curling up at the sides.
with his hands clasping your waist and under your shirt. you began to feel the fabric rise up. harry broke his lips away from your neck, rolling the shirt up and over your head. throwing it to the floor. the chill of the room now hitting your topless body, your nipples hardening more to the new adjustment. your hands falling into harry’s hair again as he lowered himself along your body. kissing the skin over your breasts. looking up at you, watching you.  harry took one of your harden nipples into his mouth, the other between his fingers of his hand. tracing X's and O's over and around. him kissing, licking, sucking, biting at every bit of your bare skin. earning him moans and whimpers from you, continuing to watch you lose yourself. feeling privileged to see this sight of you, only him. only he could get this arouse out of you. your head rested on the pillow, a whimpering mess from only his mouth. giving him all the rights to ravage your body.
the anticipation was getting the best of you. you wanted him now, you were already over with his toying around. “harry, please.” you whimpered, “p-please do something.” harry looked up, smirking at you, devilishly before he climbed back up. your legs wrapped around his middle, pushing him closer to you. “eager aren’t we?” he retorted. you smiled into a moan when you felt his erected shaft underneath his joggers, graze your throbbing clit, covered in your drenched panties. you weren’t the only one.
harry tilted your face up towards his, pecking your lips sweetly and pulling away only centimetres. “stay patient, love.” he muttered, then. before going back down your body again. trickling kisses above the waistband of your sweats. feeling his long, slender fingers slid under the band, pulling the pants down agonizingly slow before he was faced with your panties now.
he groaned at the sight of the wet spot on them, causing you to gasp when he ran three fingers over your clothed heat. “you’re so wet.” he swallowed, meeting his green eyes with yours, darkened and glazed over in lust and desire. “and its all for me.” not wasting another second before pulling the fabric down off you and you hissing at the sharp chill grace your cunt.
harry continued to tease, starting from your knee and aligning kisses on your inner thighs. feeling his breath graze where you wanted his mouth the most. you bucked your hips once at him, immediately his hands meeting them “ah ah.” he spoke, you looked down at him, him raising a brow and his green eyes flashing up at you. silently telling you to “be patient.” again. leaving you irritated as your head forcefully met the pillow. but the little tantrum working in your favor when you felt his lips kiss your mound, following a stride of his tongue against your swollen clit. like an electric shock to your body. he worked you slow and hard, careful, taking his time like this was going to be the last. building you up to the top, then slowing down to do it all over again. your hands wrapped up in his curls, bringing him as close as you could. directing him where you wanted him as you rotated your hips until he had enough, holding your lower half down, your legs on his shoulders and your hands in his. as he devoured you like a delicacy. and having you come on his tongue. twice.
once he was done tasting you, so fucked out and spaced, you hadn’t noticed him standing at the end of your bed. undressing himself until he was left in his briefs, crawling back over you, his legs parting yours at the knees as his large hand cupped your cheek, bringing your lips to his. nudging his nose with yours, he pecked your cheek, “are you still with me, love?” he asked, noticing how you were still trying to get to your whereabouts. harry’s fingers of his other hand were drawing little circles to your hip, to the top of your heat. you nodded slow, giving him the go to continue further when you felt his finger slip through your soaked folds, before entering you. you moaned at the feeling, harry now resting his forehead to yours as his fingers moved in and out of you at a generous pace. one of your hands, met harry’s face gently. while your free one went searching passed his tented briefs, before embracing his hard, thicken shaft in your hand. causing harry’s breath to hitch at the contact. collecting the pre-cum at the top of his swollen tip, lubing him up and running your hand tightly around his cock, stroking him. his free hand holding your face close to his, both swallowing each other’s moans in between heated kisses as you got each other off.
harry could feel you tightening around his fingers, growing closer to the edge. he pulled his fingers away from you and backed away from your touch. you shuttered in surprise, pouting from the loss of contact. looking up at him, searching for an explanation for only to be left watering in your mouth from the view of harry the two fingers that were occupied and covered by your juices, into his mouth. tasting you. in a need, you leaned up to meet harry halfway, pulling him into another countless kiss. your hand travelling to his shaft that was resting stiff against his abdomen when his hand met it mid stream, tangling his fingers with yours.
“no love, I need you now.” he commanded, gently pushing you back down. laying on top of you, feeling his cock resting against you. the same hand still wrapped in yours, now next to your head. while the other placed your thigh around him, before wrapping his hand around his shaft, positioning himself perfectly aligned with your cunt. feeling the tip. his head falling into the nook of your neck, his curls tickling your skin, lips warm against your neck and shoulder as he slipped into you, slow.
you gasped at him expanding your walls, being cautious, taking his time as he waited for you adjust to him. muttering sweet nothings, kissing you all over the place before he heard the green light from you. starting a nice rhythm, pulling almost all the way out and thrusting right back in. his hands all over you, his mouth connected to any bit of your skin that he could taste. his moans and grunts grazing hot at your ear were enough to have you orgasm right then and there for him. but any moment that you felt like you were growing closer, harry would slow down. lazily pounding into you, muttering affirmations. “you’re so beautiful.” to “you feel so good, love.”
your new favorite though almost was barely audible when he began to pick up the pace, colliding with the friction of your skin meeting. kissing you deeply, “I love you.” he said, softly but sincere. your eyes opening from focusing on the repetition to his words, “say it again.” you said looking at him with half lidded eyes, your glistening skin in a sheen of sweat. harry smirked big before you watched his mouth almost ‘o’
“I love you, y/n.” he said again. leaving you to moan at the sound of it, leaning up slightly, chasing his lips with yours. “I love you too” you spoke against his mouth, wrapping your hands around his back. soon beginning to dig when you felt yourself growing close.
harry began to feel you clenching around him. “are you close, baby?” he muttered. immursed in the how beautifully your bodies moved today, like they were made for this. you met his gaze again, “y-yes” you stuttered in between a moan, he then peck your lips, grabbing your hands like daggers from his back into his large hands, setting them above your head. beginning to speed up, driving to home base. thrusting into you erratically, both your breathy moans and sounds echoing against the walls of the room. his head falling to meet his mouth to your ear, “come with me, come with me, come with me” he repeated.
and before you could even think of attempting to hold back. without a warning, you cried out in absolute pleasure as your orgasm ripples through you. your back arching, collecting every bit. harry’s hands clasping to meet your middle as he senselessly pounded into you when his hips snapped back, meeting his own euphoria and he released warm and heavy into you. collapsing limply onto your body, his weight heavy and him completely exhausted, but in a unrelaxed, happy state. in a haze from what just took place seconds ago.
you both lied there, motionless. breathless with a dry throat, panting and clammy. you lazily ran your fingers through harry’s hair where his head lied, resting on your chest between your breasts. he slowly looked up at you. his green eyes soft now, his smile, toothlessly and dreamy that you felt butterflies sworm. “you alright, love?” he whispered, you smiled, nodding to answer. your hand, caressing his milky, glistening cheek. leaving you in a fit of giggles, when he turned his mouth in the direction of your palm. kissing it before lazily climbing up you and placing his hands on your cheeks. just staring at each other for a moment, gazing, taking each other in before he smile, kissing your cheek and bringing his attention back to you.
“did I tell you that I love you?” he smiled, feeling heat rise to your cheek. biting your lip, you shrugged. “Mmm, maybe once or twice?” you said, then. wrapping your arms around his neck. harry flashed a bright smile, leaning closer to your lips with his. “well i’ve got all night to tell you more.” he said, before crashing his lips on yours.

A Clean Break
Exactly 1890 words on a relationship with a deadline, a second chance, and a dog named Noodle.
“You promised,” Harry murmured. “I know,” you laughed dryly, turning away from him as a tear slipped down your cheek. You sniffled, running a hand over your face. “I know,” you repeated quietly. “I’m sorry.”
He sighed, putting his hands on your shoulders and kissing your cheek softly from behind you. “You promised you wouldn’t cry,” he mumbled, and you could hear him holding back tears as well. “So did you,” you told him, nudging him gently.
“I have to go,” he said after a second, as if daring you to tell him not to.
You wanted to.
You wanted to tell him to stay, that your deal you’d worked out three months ago wasn’t valid anymore, that everything was different now. You’d had no idea how much you’d fall for him in just a few months.
But you didn’t.
Instead, you whispered, “I know.”
He still didn’t move. “I’m gonna miss the car.”
You cleared your throat, nodding your head slightly. “I know,” you repeated, turning around and then almost shivering without the warmth of his hands on your shoulders. “You should -” Your voice broke, and you had to look away from him. “You should go,” you said.
He spun a ring around his finger, but didn’t move. “I’d stay if I could,” he told you, and you heaved a breath, looking down at the floor. “I know,” you said, again. He frowned, biting his lip. He shifted forward, like he was going to touch you, but then pulled back.
Your heart broke, again, and he said, “I’ve just… I don’t think long distance would work for me.” You nodded, still unable to meet his gaze, and he rambled on. “Especially with… Just with tour, it’s difficult, you know?”
You nodded.
“It’s better to… to have a clean break…” His voice had dropped to a whisper, and you could hear him begging, begging you to read between the lines, to tell him to stay. “I know,” you mumbled, staring at the floor.
A beat of silence, and you felt his eyes on you, and you knew you’d crack, tell him to stay, if you looked up. “I’ll write,” he finally said, and you squeezed your eyes shut, because tears were brimming again. “We can still be friends, petal, and we can write, and -”
“Don’t,” you interrupted, looking up. His face fell. “Clean break,” you said, repeating his words from seconds before, the words you’d agreed on three months ago, the words that had echoed around your head for weeks after you realized this was a lot more than just a little crush.
“Clean break,” he whispered, looking like a kicked puppy.
You managed a weak smile, reaching out and ghosting your fingers against his hand. You couldn’t bring yourself to actually touch him. “Just, uh… Just don’t forget me, yeah, Styles?” It was then that he broke eye contact, as if your ability to be almost nonchalant was somehow worse than your tears.
It probably was.
“I won’t,” he said. His gaze flicked to yours and away again. “I can’t.”
“Good,” you said.
And then, abruptly, he pulled you in for a hug.
He was warm, his arms firm against your body, his breath soft against your ear when he spoke, so quiet you could barely hear him. “I’ll always love you,” he said, and before you could reply, he was out the door.
***
The first three days were torture, the first three weeks pure pain. The next two months were numb, the next like a breath of fresh air. By the sixth month anniversary of your break up, the only times you’re thinking of Harry Styles are the odd tabloid and the even odder reminder of him in your closet, or the pictures on your phone.
You haven’t dated anyone since, but you’re telling yourself it’s because you haven’t found anybody right. It’s not because of him. Of course it’s not because of him; that was six months ago. You’re a new person now.
Harry Styles? Who’s he?
“Some boybander from twenty years ago,” you giggle to your friend, a glass of wine dangling from your fingers as you lounge back on your couch. Your phone is up against your ear, the rain calming as it splatters against your windows and thunder rolls through the clouds.
“Must have been forty years,” your friend replies. “Jesus - what was his band? N’Sync?”
“Bye, Bye, Bye, baby,” you laugh, and then you sigh when you hear three sharp raps against your door. “It’s… eight o’clock,” you groan to your friend, debating how bad it would be if you just ignored it even as you drag yourself up from your couch. “And it’s pouring. Who could possibly be knocking?”
“Probably just a package,” she tells you, and you hear a clink as she refills her glass. You sigh again. “I didn’t order anything,” you grumble to her, not bothering to look through the peephole before opening the door. “I’m too -”
You pause, mid sentence, gaping like a fish as you stare at the guy on your doorstep.
“Speak of the devil,” you breathe, and your friend scoffs.
“What?” she laughs. “You’re jo-”
“I’m gonna call you back,” you say, not taking your eyes off of Harry.
Your hand drops to your side, slipping your phone back into your pocket, and you think vaguely that you never hung up. “It’s raining,” you say dumbly. He nods. “Yeah,” he says, and you realize he’s trembling.
“Holy shit,” you say, stepping backwards, “it’s - it’s fucking - it’s pouring… It’s pouring, H, what the fuck are you doing here? Are you insane?” He steps inside, the screen door banging shut behind him, and says, “Probably.”
“Jesus Christ, you’re gonna…” You blink, unsure of what to do, just staring at him drip all over your floor. “You’re making a mess,” you say, and he whispers, “Yeah.” A second of silence, and then your mind spins into action.
“You’re gonna get sick,” you mumble, darting into the bathroom to grab towels. You’re back in a second, peeling off his jacket and tossing it onto a hook near the door and shoving a towel into his hands.
He dries off his hair, and you’re staring, and then you duck into the kitchen and start a pot of tea. “It’s fucking freezing,” you murmur, hearing him step into the room behind you. His shoes are off, hands fidgeting with the towel still in his hands.
Silence lingers for a moment as the kettle boils and steam rises, mesmerizing the two of you. “It’s been, erm… it’s been a while,” he says from the table when the kettle sings and you’re pouring tea. You shrug. “Well,” you say. He bites his lip, fingers wrapped around his cup.
“You look good,” he says.
“Thanks,” you say back, sitting down across from him with a cup of your own. The responding compliment hovers on your tongue, and even though it’s true, even though he does look better, looks better than you do, you look into your tea instead and wait for him to talk.
“I miss you,” he says.
You don’t look up.
The silence comes back, heavy and charged, curling up to the ceiling with the steam of your tea. Harry fidgets with the rings on his fingers, and the handle of his tea cup, and the fraying edge of his sweatshirt.
You stare at your tea.
“I was afraid you’d run away,” Harry murmurs finally, breaking the silence.
You look up. Don’t reply.
“If I… told you what I wanted,” he says. “I was… I was afraid…” He frowns, looking down at his tea, and his voice hushes. “I was afraid that telling you I want you, for better or for worse… would scare you off.”
You bite your lip. “Want?” you echo, and he looks up, confused. You clear your throat. “Present tense?” you clarify, and he flushes, just a bit. “Erm - yeah.” There’s a beat of silence, and then, suddenly, he’s reaching across the table.
His hand is cold, still almost freezing from the rain, but his touch fills you with warmth. “I’m sorry for leaving,” he says. “I should have stayed. I meant what I said, petal, that I love you, that I’ll always love you. And I’ll wait, love - I swear it, I’d wait forever, for you, for us. I know I broke us, but I’ll - I’ll put us back together. I can fix it - fix us, if you’d just give me a chance.”
“What happened to long distance relationships don’t work?” you ask. “Especially on tour?” He squeezes your hand. “I want to try it. The - the long distance thing. And… I’ve never wanted to. Try, I mean. Before. But I think it could be different with you.”
“We had a clean break, Harry,” you whisper.
“Did we?”
You bite your lip, and don’t reply.
“Tell me you don’t love me,” he says. “Tell me right now, and I’ll leave.”
You don’t say anything. You can’t.
He smiles and squeezes your hand.
And despite everything, a warm rush of relief floods through you.
***
“Oh my God, he’s adorable!” you squeal, half drunk and way too close to Harry as you fawn over pictures of his dog on his phone screen. It’s later, now, probably close to midnight, but you can’t really bring yourself to care.
The ice had broken fairly quickly, and you’d managed to stay on light topics to just get used to being around each other again. You still weren’t sure if you were really going to try again with him, but you weren’t thinking about it at the moment, and you were perfectly content with that. You’d think about it later.
Harry, also half drunk, and also way too close to you, is grinning as he finishes the last of his third glass of wine. “What’s his name, again?” you ask, taking his phone out of his hands as he stands up to refill his glass.
“Noodle,” Harry tells you, and you burst out in giggles. “Perfect,” you say, and then coo as you scroll to a picture of Noodle on his back, tongue lolling out of his mouth and fluffy paws in the air. “Oh, I love him,” you gush, starting to hand Harry’s phone back to him as he sits down again. “I’ll have to m-”
Your finger slips, flipping through twenty pictures at once, and you pause mid sentence.
You’ve landed on a picture of you, smiling brilliantly, with a birthday hat on and a huge cake in front of you. Harry’s next to you, also wearing a birthday hat, and he’s grinning as he presses a kiss to your cheek.
You both look absolutely elated, the light from the candles in front of you and the stars around you making you glow. Memories come rushing back, and for the first time in hours, silence hangs between the two of you for a split second.
Harry flushes, gently slipping the phone from your hands. “Erm - yeah, you should -”
“That was a good night,” you interrupt softly.
A small smile tugs the corners of Harry’s lips. “Yeah,” he says. “Yeah, it was.”
“Harry?” you whisper, feeling yourself lean in.
“Yeah?”
You bite your lip, close enough now to brush noses. “Can I kiss you?”
Harry smiles. “Yeah,” he says.
So you do.

“Why won’t you look at me?” you asked softly, sitting on the soft, unmade king sized bed.
Rafe stood shirtless across the room, chest heaving with heavy breaths. He had his back to you. One hand was against the wall in a clenched fist, the other running through his long hair.
“Rafe.”
“What do you want me to say? Huh?!” he turned to you, eyebrows furrowed and lips turned down.
“I don’t know, that you feel it too?! I would expect something a little more after I just said I love you!” you shouted, throwing your arms up exaggeratedly.
Rafe shook his head and let out a dark laugh. Something in his eyes changed and you felt a tug at your heart strings. After seeing each other for a year, you figured he would have the same feelings as you. Yeah you were never exclusive, but everyone knew you were together. Everyone knew Rafe wasn’t sleeping with anyone else.
“But I don’t, (Y/N). This has been sex, that’s all. Really good sex,” every word he spoke cut through you like a knife. Then he ripped out your heart and stomped on it right in front of you, “I could never love a Pogue like you.”
Just less than two years. You left home at seventeen and here you were, driving back through the same island you grew up on, almost nineteen now. Figure Eight looked just the same as it used to, a few newer, bigger houses were built. But it still looked the same. The Cut was no different. Your heart ached as you drove past the run down houses.
You arrived at the old house and parked behind the Volkswagen van. Memories flooded your brain of you and John B playing in the yard when you were younger. A frown pulled at your lips.
You walked up to the front door and tried the knob, turning it with ease and swinging it open. You grimaced slightly at the sight in front of you. Beer cans and bottles littered all the surfaces along with dead juul pods and joint roaches. The pullout couch was open and unmade. It wreaked of stale booze and marijuana.
“Dude, I’m telling you, they’re wrong. I’m not signing those fucking papers,” your heart rate sped up significantly when you heard that voice. He sounded so much older but still the same.
You stood in middle of the room as John B came out of your father’s old room. He did a double take, stopping dead in his tracks at the end of the small hallway. His hazel eyes were glued to your face like he’d seen a ghost.
“Hi, bubba,” you whispered, tears threatening to spill from your eyes.
John B rushed to you, scooping you in his arms by the waist and squeezing you tight. You heard a choked sob leave his lips. One of your hands rested on the back of his head and the other arm wound tightly around his shoulders.
He was so much taller now. He looked like a full grown man. His hair was longer and his skin was tanner, more freckled than it used to be. But he was still the sweet little brother you remembered and adored.
“I’m here, shh, you’re okay,” you cooed softly, hand stroking over his curls gently.
“You’re all I have left,” John B’s broken voice had those tears falling immediately. You mentally kicked yourself for waiting so long to come home. You should have been here sooner. You’d gotten the call from Peterkin a month ago about your father’s disappearance, you just hadn’t worked up the nerve to return.
“What did I tell you? That’s why I told you to stay off the North side and stay away from those people!” Big John had been yelling for well over half an hour. Instead of comforting his daughter when she came home in tears, he was berating her. He scolded her for getting mixed up in the Kook life and falling for one of them.
“Do you think I meant for this to happen?! I was just doing what you told me to, Dad! I’m trying to make a better life for myself!”
“And how’s that working out for you? The real world ain’t pretty is it, sweetheart? Why don’t you be like your brother and get a real fucking job instead of mooching off rich scum!” Big John damn near flipped the kitchen table as he stood up. “If you don’t get your shit together, (Y/N), you may as well just leave.”
The office door slammed shut and you were left standing alone in the middle of the kitchen, hands shaking and angry tears streaming down your cheeks. In a hurry, you rushed into yours and John B’s shared bedroom. You pulled out the only two duffle bags you had and hastily started shoving your clothes in one. As many personal items as you could fit were shoved in the other.
John B sat crisscross in the middle of his bed. He’d been listening to you and your father fight the whole time. He knew what you were doing but he couldn’t let you go without a fight.
“You’re just gonna leave me here?” his voice was so small and pained. Your poor little brother was too young to have to deal with this. He had only just turned fifteen.
You stopped packing and stood up, turning to face John B slowly. He was staring up at you, tears swimming in his eyes. You walked over and sat down next to him.
“I can’t do this anymore, JB. I can’t live with him constantly looking at me like some failure,” you told your brother softly. It wasn’t just your father. Your fight with Rafe and everything he said was weighing heavy on your mind as well. You just wanted to get off that island and never look back.
“Then just make him happy! Do what he says and stay! I don’t want you to go.”
You smiled sadly and brushed your brother’s curls away from his eyes. You leant down and pressed a soft kiss to his forehead. “I wouldn’t be me if I did that, bubba. I wouldn’t be living my life,” you explained.
John B’s arms wrapped around your waist and he cried into your shoulder, knowing nothing he said would make you stay. You held him tightly to your side until his cries were mere sniffles. He rubbed his eyes with the back of his hand and looked up at you.
“I love you.”
You bit your trembling bottom lip and nodded, whispering, “I love you too, John B. Always. I’ll come back one day, I promise.”
“We need to throw a welcome back party,” JJ said from his spot on a chair on the screened in porch. He was rolling a joint, eyebrows knitted in concentration, eyes nearly crossed from how closely he held it to is face.
You were laid on the couch, hands behind your head as you stared up at the ceiling. You hummed in response, not completely opposed to the idea. One thing you missed about the OBX were the parties. People on the mainland just didn’t know how to do it like the islanders.
“Kegger at the Boneyard?” John B suggest from the chair beside JJ, eyebrows raised as he looked between the two of you.
“I’m always down for a kegger,” you responded while sitting up, letting out a small laugh. “Am I really about to go to a party with my little brother?”
John B scoffed and rolled his eyes, “Our parties are the best. You’ve been missing out.”
“I’ll just have to see that for myself won’t I?” you responded with a wink, standing from the couch and going into the house to get ready.
You went into your father’s old room and dig through your bags until you found a proper outfit. You took a quick shower to rid yourself of sweat and sand, using your favorite rose scented body wash. You knew there was a chance that you’d see Rafe tonight, and you wanted to make damn sure that you looked your best.
The party was in full swing at the Cameron house. Ward was away on a business trip, so Rafe was taking full advantage of having the house to himself. He kept checking his phone in hopes that he’d see a text with your name attached, but one never came.
Regret bubbled in the dirty blonde’s stomach at what he’d said to you a few days before. He hadn’t seen you since that night and he was craving the feeling of your lips on his. Usually if the two of you argued, it was only about a day before one of you was crawling back. He knew what he said probably hurt you so he was giving you your space.
Rafe’s eyes scanned over the crowd of people, hoping to see your familiar head of h/c hair. He didn’t find you. Instead, he made his way over to his best friend in hopes that maybe someone had seen you. You never missed a good party.
“Hey, Top, have you seen (Y/N)?”
The smile Topper had previously been wearing slowly fell. He glanced around the room and looked back at Rafe with an unreadable expression.
“Dude, what?” Rafe’s tone was annoyed. Clearly his friend knew something that he didn’t and he wanted him to spit it out.
“(Y/N)’s gone, Rafe. Word on the street is she ran away the other night. She left,” Topper told him.
Rafe stared at Topper with a blank expression, heart hammering against his chest. He turned quickly and made a beeline for the backdoor, ignoring the shouts of his name from behind him. He felt like he couldn’t breathe and needed to get out of that crowd.
The blonde Kook pulled out his phone and dialed your number, holding the device to his ear with a shaking hand. A dial tone pierced his ear before an automated voice came through.
“We’re sorry, but the number you’re trying to reach has been disconnected...”
Rafe hung up, breathing deeply through nose before trying again. The same message repeated back to him four more times. In anger, he threw his phone against the brick of the house with a shout. He ran his fingers through his long hair and tried to suck in a few shaky breaths.
“Fuck!” he shouted, slamming his hands against the house.
“Yo, chill out dude! What happened?” Topper approached his friend after seeing his outburst. He was shocked when Rafe turned to him with tears blurring his vision.
Rafe’s voice shook as he responded sadly, “She fucking left because of me!” He put his hands on top of his head and turned away. He didn’t know if Topper heard him, but he continued, even if he was just talking to himself, “I fucking told her I didn’t love her and now she’s gone.”
When you arrived at the Boneyard, Pope and Kiara already had one keg set up. John B and JJ carried a second one down to the sand. The were already a few people from The Cut there, catching word early of the party. You couldn’t stop smiling as John B passed you a cup of cheap beer.
You fiddled with the radio that was near the kegs until you found a good station. You turned the volume up and started dancing to the song that came on as you made your way back over to your brother and his friends.
“A toast!” JJ shouted, raising his red solo cup in the air. Everyone followed his actions with grins stretched across their lips. “To (Y/N) motherfucking Routledge! Welcome home!”
The five of you cheered and knocked your cups together then downed some of the bitter liquid. You grimaced as you forced it down your throat and shook your head in disgust. You did not miss warm, cheap beer.
A couple of hours passed and the Boneyard filled up with all kinds of people. Kids from The Cut, Tourons, and even Kooks. So far no one had started a turf war and you were thankful for that. You didn’t want to remember your first party back like that.
You had been chatting with a couple of your old friends near the bonfire when a blonde caught your eye through the flames. You excused yourself from the small group and made your way around the fire to the familiar person.
“Topper Thornton?” you spoke through a laugh, watching said boy turn around. He looked shocked at first then a wide smile stretched across his face.
“Holy shit!” he exclaimed, marching through the sand and wrapping you a welcomed hug. “When did you get back?!”
“Yesterday,” you responded with a smile when he pulled back. You found your eyes glancing at the people around him, looking for someone.
Topper noticed and his eyes drifted behind you, smile never leaving his face. You already knew who he was looking at so you didn’t bother turning around.
“You should talk to him.”
“I can’t, Topper. It’s been almost two years and I have nothing to say to him,” you sighed, bringing your cup up to your lips and taking a gulp of your beverage.
“Try, (Y/N). He was never the same when he found out you were gone. He’s been fucked up over it ever since,” the blonde boy tried to reason with you.
He fell silent and looked to his right just as you felt a presence beside you. You looked up and directly into the bright blue eyes you fell in love with. The eyes you still dreamt about. The eyes you desperately missed after all this time. They were your favorite shade of blue.
“Hey, (Y/N),” Rafe said nervously, clutching a red cup in his fingers. His other hand was shoved in the pocket of his shorts. He heard the rumors that you were back. He came to the party to see for himself if it was true.
The sound of his voice was a shot to the heart. You almost forgot what it sounded like for him to say your name. You felt dizzy, like you couldn’t breathe and suddenly, you regretted agreeing to this stupid party in the first place. Without a word, you spun on your heel and started walking away.
“Wait,” Rafe called after you, following your quick steps down the beach. “(Y/N) wait!”
“What?! What Rafe?” you screamed as you turned around quickly to face the dirty blonde. You had made it pretty far down the beach, just barely able to hear the music.
“I-I haven’t seen you in almost two years and you don’t even want to talk to me?” he had stopped as well, standing a few feet away from you.
You scoffed and shook your head, running a hand through your hair. You had dropped your cup back where you walked away from Topper. Getting drunk was the last thing on your mind now.
“What did you expect? Hm?” you questioned, taking a menacing step closer to the man in front of you. “Did you really think the first thing I’d do was come to you and beg you to take me back? Expect me to crawl into bed with you?”
“No- I-”
“So you can tell me i was just a good fuck and that’s it?!” you were thankful no one lived in the woods behind you or the cops would have surly been called at the volume you were yelling at.
“I didn’t say it like that!” Rafe yelled back, also taking a step closer to you.
“Ah, you’re right,” you smacked your lips and held a finger to your chin in mock thought. “Your exact words were actually ‘this has been sex, that’s all. Really good sex. I could never love a Pogue like you.”
You were staring at each other now. Rafe was frowning and your eyes were like a fire burning into him. He remained silent.
“That’s right, Rafe. I never forgot. Those words still haunt me to this day.”
He never forgot either. He would regret saying them until the day he died. And he didn’t care if he had to spend forever making it up to. He would give anything to take it all back and maybe you would have stayed.
“I didn’t mean it,” Rafe’s voice shook. “I was.. I was scared.”
“Bullshit,” you muttered and turned to walk away again. He caught your wrist and spun you back around, his face within inches of yours.
“You can believe it or not, I don’t care. I love you, (Y/N). I always have and I was a fucking idiot to make you think I didn’t,” his voice was softer now, ocean blue eyes staring into your e/c ones. You saw no trace of dishonesty on his face. You could see nothing but pure regret and guilt in his eyes. “I was scared of loving you. I didn’t deserve to be loved by you so I pushed you away. We were so young I didn’t think we could even be in love. I will never be able to take back the pain I caused you, but I swear, I will try and make it up to you for the rest of my life.”
Rafe’s grip slowly released on your wrist. If you wanted to walk away, he was going to let you. He said everything he needed to say, and he meant every word. He was shocked when your hands came up and cupped his cheeks. Your touch was delicate, like you were going to break him.
The truth was, he said everything you’d been waiting to hear for the last two years. Deep down you knew that’s exactly what he was doing back then but you were just too hurt to do anything about it. The fighting with your father just piled on top of that, so you ran away from it all. Here and now, you were ready to let go of that painful past. You were ready to be loved by Rafe Cameron.
“Say it again,” you whispered, hands winding around the back of his neck.
“I love you, (Y/N) Routledge,” Rafe’s voice was confident, hands finding their way to your waist. He pulled you closer, until your chests were pressed together and you could feel the rapid beating of the other’s heart.
You pulled his head down and connected your lips in one of the most mind blowing kisses you’d ever had. Two years of pent up emotions came pouring out. Your lips moved in synchronization desperately, savoring each second; making up for lost time. His arms wound around your back and lifted you, your legs wrapping around his hips.
Rafe pulled away and rested his forehead against yours, soft pants leaving his parted lips. You bit your lip to stop yourself from smiling like a giddy schoolgirl. John B was going to kill you when he found out, but that thought was quickly pushed away.
“I’ll never let you go again,” Rafe whispered through a smile before reconnecting your lips.

The Coda Project | 1.02 - Inherit the Flames
After reuniting Tommy Collins with his family, Dean and Sam stop for the night in a town called Rifle.
They’re about two hours out of Blackwater Ridge, at a dumpy motel on the edge of a town called Rifle, and Dean’s been staring at the tree-print wallpaper for so long that he’s started detecting patterns in the branches.
A cheap plug-in air freshener in the bathroom has the whole place reeking of artificial pine. Between that and the walls, Dean’s starting to feel as though the wilderness they just barely managed to escape from has followed them here. Hell, maybe they didn’t escape. Maybe he’s still strung up in the mine; maybe the wendigo is still tossing him around like a ragdoll, scrambling his brains just enough that he’s dreaming of a motel that doesn’t exist.
Outside, an eighteen-wheeler passes on the I-70, close enough to make the windows rattle. Dean shifts in his bed as if a different position is going to be enough to distract him from how badly his ribs ache. His scratched-up neck feels raw as road rash.
No matter how hard he tries, sleep still feels so far out of the realm of possibility that he starts wondering how long he should lie here before he can cut his losses and call it.
But then Sam pipes up—“Hey, can I ask you something?”—from across the room, not bothering to check first if Dean’s awake, and immediately he wants to just keep feigning sleep until morning. He might have sought out his brother’s company only a couple of weeks ago, but right now, with the memory of Sam’s dismissive attitude toward helping the Collins family fresh in his mind, he doesn’t feel much like talking to him.
“Dean.”
He presses his eyes shut, ignoring the part of himself that’s berating him for being childish. Whether he can get to sleep or not, he’s too goddamn exhausted to talk about anything that isn’t life or death.
If he thought there was even a chance that his brother was angling to talk about Jessica, he’d be sitting up and listening in a heartbeat. But his tone is inquisitive, not hesitant, and Sam’s been so closed-lipped about his grief that Dean only knows how much her death is affecting him because of how loud and frequent his nightmares have been.
“Dean,” Sam says again, slightly louder. “I know you’re awake.”
With a huff, Dean tilts his head to squint at him across the gap between their lumpy mattresses. He grimaces as the motion pulls at the claw marks on his neck. He’ll be lucky if they don’t scar, but maybe it’d be better if they do. Maybe it’d help if he could see something visibly fucked up when he looks in the mirror. Maybe that would make it easier to explain away the revulsion he feels when he meets his own eyes.
“Dude, can it wait until after I get a solid four hours?”
Bullheaded as ever, Sam ignores the question, sitting up and tucking his shaggy hair back behind his ears. He looks twelve years old. Dean figures he always will, in some ways.
“Did something happen with Dad? Before he took off, I mean.”
“Like what?”
He’s not sure why he bothers asking Sam to clarify.
Maybe it’s just to buy himself some time; to give himself a second to come up with some version of the truth that doesn’t amount to Dad’s an overbearing, pigheaded prick, just like you’ve always said, and if I didn’t think he was in trouble right now I’d be glad to be rid of him for at least another month.
Even thinking it makes him guilty. Like he’s a bad son for being so angry with the guy. But he’s gotta believe that his actions are the important part here; proof that no matter how much he hates his dad sometimes, he still loves him enough to want to keep this family as connected as he can.
Still, a part of him is wondering if it’s really worth it anymore to keep up the act. If his clinging to John and clinging to Sam is just making things worse for all of them. Making John think he’ll put up with whatever he throws at him. Making Sam think he doesn’t care enough to take his side against John when he’s being unreasonable.
A part of him wonders—but it’s not a big enough part to win. The thought that something might have happened to him keeps him from letting the bile spill.
Because if they can’t find him—or worse, if they do find him but they’re too late—Dean doesn’t want Sam to have more reasons to be angry with a dead man than he’s already got.
It’s not as though Dean’s not used to keeping this shit locked down, anyway. There’ve been other disagreements, other fights, other circumstances over the years that he knows weren’t even close to being fair on him, but that’s just his life. It sucks, but it’s how it’s always been. No use complaining about it if it’s never gonna change, and after living this way for twenty-two of his twenty-six years, he sees no reason to consider change a possibility.
In the grand scheme of things, this particular incident doesn’t even make the top five list of awful things John’s put him through. The honors there go to that time with the shtriga, abandoning him at Sonny’s and then uprooting him as soon as he let himself get comfortable, the hunt he sent him on as a seventeenth birthday “present”, the night he told Sam not to bother coming back if he left for school, and the simple act of raising his kids into this shit in the first place.
This one might make it into the top ten, though. He hasn’t decided yet.
“Well,” Sam says, pulling him out of his thoughts. “You said you hadn’t heard from him in… what, three weeks before you got that message? Seems weird that it was so long, is all. You were on a hunt, he was on a hunt… it’s just weird that you weren’t checking in more often.”
Dean rolls onto his back and stares at the ceiling. There’s a water stain on the popcorn tile overhead that almost looks like a cactus if he looks at it the right way.
Christ, he could use some tequila right now. Maybe he can find them a case further south while they wait for some sign of John to turn up. Someplace warmer than the mountains in Colorado. Someplace where he can roll into town, waste a ghost, and then knock back a few drinks on a motel patio without having to talk to anyone at all.
“I mean, you usually check in more than that, right?” Sam goes on, and Dean sighs. He lifts one hand to rub at his brow.
“Yeah, usually.”
“So… what happened?”
“Nothing you gotta worry about,” he says, and immediately knows it was a mistake. Sam zeroes in on what Dean didn’t say just as intently as anyone else would focus on what he did.
Maybe he should go to law school after all—he’s already got the artful-conversational-trap shit down.
“You had a fight.”
“Sam—”
“No, c’mon Dean. You asked me to help you find him. If you had a fight before he left, that seems like it might be relevant.”
“It’s not.”
“So why won’t you just tell me?”
“It was nothing,” he insists. “Dad isn’t exactly Mr Congeniality, Sam. We fight all the time.”
“No, me and Dad fight all the time. The two of you are usually on the same page.”
Dean suppresses a snort and rolls onto his side, his back to Sam now as he looks at the narrow strip of moonlight edging past the thin motel curtains.
“You know I’ll just ask Dad when we find him if you don’t—“
“Jesus, Sam. It was nothing. Just a stupid disagreement about the hunt we were on. You know how he can get.”
“What was the hunt?”
“A witch in Louisiana. We had different ideas about what was going on, but it’s done, the witch is dead, and it doesn’t matter anymore. Okay?”
“That’s all?”
It’s not all.
Thanks to a botched salt-and-burn in Kentucky the previous month, things had already been tense well before they checked into a motel in Souffran, Louisiana. It only got worse when they ran into a woman Dean knew on their second day in town.
She’d been a civilian, last he’d seen her. Said she was a hunter now.
John had been ready to leave as soon as he found out she was already looking into it, but Dean wasn’t so eager.
It wasn’t that he thought Marisa was helpless—far from it, in fact. She’d been teaching capoeira when Dean met her in Texas a few months back. Had the thing terrorizing her students been corporeal, he has no doubt that she never would have needed any help in kicking its ass. But she was inexperienced as a hunter. Green as they come.
Dean didn’t love the idea of her taking on whatever was killing kids in Souffran alone.
When he told John as much, his dad just gave him a sly look, as if he thought the only reason Dean cared was because he was looking to get into Marisa’s pants. Dean wasn’t, for the record. As he saw it, it was his fault that she’d decided to try hunting on for size in the first place. He figured he owed it to her to back her up while she was still so new.
At first, all they’d had to go on was two kids who’d gone missing and turned up dead a week later without any visible injuries beyond a circular burn in the center of their chests; a girl named Lucy Parker who’d disappeared without a trace from her grandmother’s backyard yesterday but was yet to be found; and half a dozen wildly inconsistent reports of strange lights being seen in the swamp running along the north edge of town.
John had been convinced that they were dealing with a fi follet—a kind of malevolent will-‘o-the-wisp known to enact vengeance and drain the blood of children. When Dean disagreed with him, explaining to Marisa that the whole thing felt witchy to him, and pointing out that neither of the kids who’d died had shown any signs of blood loss, John got pigheaded and petty.
He called Dean arrogant. Accused him of acting like John was an idiot ever since they left Kentucky. Spat, “You spend one day showing a civvie the ropes and now you’re an expert, huh? Well go ahead, kid. Handle it on your own.”
And then he bailed.
Left Dean and Marisa to track down a missing eight year old on their own, and made Dean feel about three inches tall when he did it.
It took them almost a full two days to track the thing responsible. A witch, like Dean had thought, who’d been draining the kids of their life force in a desperate, last-ditch effort to stave off some sickness that was eating away at him. But the spell he’d been using was unstable and ineffective, and he’d been haggard and jittery when they found him in a rusty little shack out in the middle of nowhere.
Lucy Parker was right there with him in the room, suspended in mid-air by some unknown force as pale, flickering light leached from the center of her chest and down into a copper bowl on the floor beneath her. Her eyes were wide and rolled back to the whites. Her mouth was open as if she were screaming.
Marisa shot the witch point blank, right between the eyes, and Dean had darted forward to catch Lucy before she could hit the ground. He’d spent the entire time terrified that they were going to get to her too late; that she’d turn up dead before they could figure out where she’d been taken or how to deal with the thing that had taken her.
When she landed in his arms, he’d almost been sick when he felt how cold she was. How limp.
But after a second, she gasped, and coughed, and then she was clinging to him. Shaking.
He couldn’t put her down. She wouldn’t let Marisa take her.
He’d been forced leave the shack while Marisa dealt with the witch’s body and destroyed all the evidence before some local could stumble upon it, and when she’d emerged gray-faced and bloody half an hour later, with the crackle of fire just audible over the steady croak of frogs in the nearby water, he’d known that Marisa wasn’t going on any more hunts.
Lucy still refused to let go of him once they got back to the car, so he’d let Marisa drive them back to town, sitting in the back seat with the kid clinging to his side and sobbing snot into his jacket. He hadn’t even minded. If he didn’t think it would scare her more, he might have let himself cry out of sheer relief at finding her.
Late that night--once Lucy was back with her grandmother, and Marisa was on her way back to San Antonio, and Souffran was far enough in the rearview that it was safe to stop for the night--Dean had called John. He didn’t pick up.
Just sent Dean’s call straight to voicemail, then texted him coordinates for a poltergeist case near Mobile, Alabama an hour later. A few days after that, more coordinates directed him to the voodoo hunt in New Orleans.
So yeah, a witch in Louisiana is not all. Not by a long shot. He doesn’t tell Sam that, though. What would be the point?
“Yeah, that’s all,” he lies, still staring at the gap in the curtains. Another truck rumbles past, air brakes hissing as it slows to take the town exit. It’s so loud that he’s not sure that he’d manage to sleep here even if he wasn’t a headcase. “C’mon, I gotta crash, man.”
For a minute, it seems like Sam’s gonna keep at it. Like he’ll needle at Dean until he spills everything out onto the pilled carpet between them. How scared he is. How angry. How resentful. All the ugliest feelings that seem to be pressing up his throat and onto the back of his tongue like bile.
But he doesn’t. Just sighs, sounding as tired as Dean feels, and says, “Yeah, okay. Night, Dean.”
Dean grunts in reply, and Sam starts snoring after a half hour. Another half hour after that, his nightmares begin. Low, helpless murmurs of Jessica’s name and high-pitched whines of terror that stick in Dean’s chest like buckshot.
With dry eyes and an ever-present lump in his throat, Dean pushes out of bed and heads for the bathroom, taking the laptop as he goes.
If he’s lucky, he’ll find them a hunt before Sam wakes up. He can get them back on the road as soon as the sun rises. Keep them focused on something that isn’t the complete lack of leads on John.
If he’s not, maybe staying up will wear him out enough to sleep tomorrow. He’ll take what he can get.

All Caps, my love (this was so fun to work on because it really highlighted how differently I write them when Steve is involved)
Set in the same universe as You Don't Have to Read My Mind (to know what I have in mind) which means Nico and Hattie make a return and silver fox Commander Rogers is around
Read on AO3!
The Other Be Other
It was Nico who noticed it first, so he didn’t say jack to anyone. Well, not right away. It took him three days to break and scoot his desk chair into Hattie’s cubicle. “Hey, did you see Barnes the other day?” he asked.
Hattie’s eyelids actually fluttered. “Fuck, he looked so good,” she said. “And smelt good too.”
Nico scrunched up his nose. “He smelled like fried fish. Anyway, did you see that shirt he was wearing?”
He let Hattie think. Let her mentally redress him. “It was that blue fishing shirt, wasn’t it? Over a white t-shit. He had it open.”
“Yeah. It was a blue shirt with darker blue sharks on it,” Nico said.
“You pay a lot of attention to him. Hey, if you’re into Barnes, I’m not backing down. You’ll have to fight me for him,” she teased.
Nico blushed furiously and then willed it away because he didn’t want to explain why he was blushing or let Hattie think he was blushing because he had a crush on Barnes. “No, that’s not what I meant. Wilson was wearing the same shirt two weeks ago when he came in to file the newest report on Walker.”
Now Hattie scrunched up her nose. “Fuck that guy,” she said and Nico almost laughed.
“I would’ve thought he was your type.”
“As if,” she said. “So what? Barnes and Wilson have the same shirt.” Nico cut her an unimpressed look. “You think Barnes and Wilson are wearing the same shirt,” she clarified.
“Listen, everyone already knows Barnes wears Wilson’s Air Force hoodie,” Nico said.
“Someone said it was the new Falcon’s.”
“It’s not Joaquin’s,” Nico said quickly. Too quickly. Horrifyingly quickly.
“Oh my God, do you like the new Falcon?” Hattie asked.
“We’re not talking about the new Falcon,” Nico said. “We’re talking about Wilson and Barnes.”
“Barnes and Wilson,” Hattie corrected.
“Wilson is Captain America. He comes first.”
“You think so?” she asked with a wicked grin.
Nico blushed so hard he thought he might actually spring a fever.

“Why are you wearing that, Barnes?” Sam asked from the driver’s side of the car.
“What, you don’t like it?” Bucky asked, tossing his duffel bag into the backseat and climbing into the passenger side. “You left it in the dryer. It was the first thing I grabbed.”
“Grab your own clothes,” Sam said.
“Damn, you’re about to have Steve go down on you, can you lighten up?” Bucky snorted. “You’re high strung.” He leaned over to kiss Sam sweetly and then tried not to laugh when Sam turned it all sorts of filthy. “Save it for Steve, tiger,” he teased. “He whined all night last night about missing you and you not bein’ around to get on the phone with him.”
“He’s been up there for a week,” Sam said as he rolled his eyes. Sam had also kind of been kicking himself for managing to miss the call last night, though. It was probably why he was so grouchy this morning. “Four more hours,” he added.
“I have to swing by HQ and drop off our reports for this mission,” Bucky reminded him.
“Right, you have to do that. I’ll drop your ass off and go get my man.”
“Hey, he was mine first,” Bucky said.
“So I’ve got time to make up for.”
Bucky shoved Sam’s shoulder and got a reaming about car safety even though they were barely on the road yet.
* * *
It happened again a week later. Wilson and Barnes had been in and out of the office, always so, so, so loud. There was always an argument to be had, always a fight to pick with Fury, always something embarrassing to say about Commander Rogers. Nico couldn’t figure out why they spent so much time around the office. Rogers worked in a whole different building and Fury wanted nothing to do with either of them, as far as he could tell.
But there they were at 11 AM, complaining that it wasn’t lunch yet. At 3 in the afternoon, tempting people to leave early. At 9, right after official-opening, with coffee for everyone but Fury, who wasn’t around to see their joke anyway.
There was Sam at two in the afternoon, wearing a leather jacket that was so out of place in the middle of DC in the dead of summer in the heat of the afternoon. Nico could sweat just looking out the window. But, Sam looked really, really good in the jacket, so Nico couldn’t fault him for suffering through the heat to wear it.
Damn, maybe it was a Falcon thing with him.
And maybe Nico did watch Sam a little closely. Maybe he kept his eyes on Sam’s back while he leaned on a cubicle wall that was not strong enough to support him and all that muscle. Maybe he stared at his smooth skin and the way the jacket pulled over his shoulders and--
There was stitching around the arm of the jacket. Nico blinked a few times to make sure it wasn’t a trick of the light, but there was definitely blue thread holding the arm of the jacket to the rest of it.
And actually now that he was looking at the jacket and not Sam Wilson, he recognized the pattern on it, the weird ribbing down the sides, the golden buckles on the back to adjust the waist. He’d seen that jacket before. On the news. Several months ago, he’d had to pour over news footage of a Serpent Society...attack? fight? because Barnes had been part of it and his dumb report had said, I know there’s video footage of this. That’s my statement. So Nico had needed to put together a fucking highlights reel of Barnes’ action to file the report.
He’d gotten in trouble for it too.
He pulled the file up on his computer and watched the footage for a second to make sure it was the same jacket. And it was, except Barnes had ripped the sleeve off of his to show his metal arm. The left arm. The arm resewn onto this jacket.
The video suddenly cut into sound, making Nico jump. Sam Wilson looked over at him, at the footage on the computer and Barnes flipping over cars to avoid gunfire in that jacket. He reached over to shut the player off on Nico’s computer. “You work too hard, kid,” he said. “Barnes is never gonna give you a day off if you don’t take it.”
“Ha, how’d you know he’s always stuck...I mean, assigned Sergeant Barnes’ reports?” Hattie asked.
Sam shot Nico a knowing look and Nico panicked, thinking Sam knew that Nico knew about more than the $100 on his desk and a missing file. But that was impossible. It was just because of the note and bribery.
Bribery from Captain America and the Winter Soldier. Jesus, what was his life?
* * *
“This was a eight hundred dollar jacket,” Steve scolded. The irritation on his face, coupled with his silver hair and those damn broad shoulders, was doing all sorts of things to Sam that Sam didn’t want to analyze too deeply. He mostly wanted to sit back and snicker at Bucky getting in trouble.
“I’m just gonna rip that arm off again,” Bucky said boredly, one leg tucked under him on the couch where he was lounging, the other thrown over Steve’s back. “Why blue thread?” he asked eventually.
“To shame you into not doing this shit again,” Sam said.
“Color theory,” Steve answered.
“There’s no color theory to using royal blue thread in a black jacket. It’s not even navy,” Bucky said.
“You wanna do it?” Steve asked.
“Obviously not. Can name a lot of other things I do want to do though.”
Steve threw the jacket at Bucky’s face instead of answering. Sam jumped up to snag it before Bucky could toss it across the room.
“What’re you doin’?” Bucky lilted up at him, turning bright blue eyes towards him from the arm of the couch. Sam reached out to stroke his thumb over Bucky’s jaw and then down his arched neck.
“Gonna wear it ‘til it stops smelling like the two of you,” he said. And then gasped and dropped the jacket as Steve was suddenly right on top of him, pressing him to the wall and kissing down his neck.
“Damn, I’ve gotta tear more shit up more often if this is what it gets me,” Bucky hummed and did something with a zipper and his metal hand that Sam could guess at but did not want to tear his eyes away from Steve to confirm.
* * *
“Holy shit,” Hattie breathed, a hand coming up to cover her mouth.
To read the reports from the heroes was one thing. Nico had read about so many bones sticking through skin that the image had started to lose its gruesomeness. He’d never been in a firefight and he’d only been a baby during the Battle of New York and during the Triskelion event in DC a few years after. Sure, he’d been around for the Blip, had struggled through five years without half the population, and then struggled through the next years after everyone reappeared, but that wasn’t the same kind of trauma as this. And he’d still only been a kid. He didn’t know what was going on then.
Now, watching from every screen in the room and occasionally out the window, he knew he was watching something terrible. He didn’t personally know any of the heroes, but it felt like watching friends being beaten and knocked down.
“Was that Hawkeye?” someone asked.
“No, that was a girl.”
“Who’s wearing Captain Marvel’s star?”
“Oh God, Spiderman just fell.”
“Wait, the new Falcon caught him.”
“Is the Hulk still fighting that thing in the ground?”
“Yeah, Thor’s still knocked out too.”
“Where’s Captain America?”
Nico pinched his arm until Hattie reached for his hand to stop him. Suddenly, a flash of red, white, and blue crashed onto a roof, drawing the attention of whatever mystic hell demon was leading the fire and brimstone charge on downtown DC.
“Oh, shit, hell yeah, Sam Wilson!” someone cheered and then everyone groaned when some lizard-like-thing knocked Sam flying with a spiked tail to the midsection.
“Wait,” Hattie said, mostly to Nico. “That’s not Sam.”
And, yeah, that was an understatement. It wasn’t his outfit and even the cowl couldn’t hide that it was a white guy under all those stars and stripes.
“Fuck, is Walker really gonna try it?” Hattie asked.
“It’s not Walker,” Nico said. “Walker doesn’t have access to the Falcon wings. Or the original Cap suit.”
Not-Wilson, Not-Walker, Not-Captain-America struggled to his feet, holding his arm around his ribs, to face the demon thing. A news drone flew closer so the coverage could pick up on the creature rasping and snarling out words.
“Captain America, you’re the one we’re looking for,” it growled.
“Yeah,” Not-Cap said, nodding his head tiredly. “That’s what I heard.”
“Oh my God,” Hattie breathed again.
“It’s Barnes,” Nico confirmed. Wearing a sleeve and glove, clean shaven, in the red, white, and blue. In the wings.
“Is he...is he acting like...bait or something? If that thing wants Cap…”
Nico shook his head. “No, not bait. He’s a red herring. He’s distracting it for Sam.”
“We want a pure soul. A fine example to be made.” The creature’s voice suddenly changed, along with its face, talons growing from its hands, a tail curling against the roof they were on. “The righteous ones make the best sounds when we flay them.”
Barnes grimaced. “You’re gonna be really disappointed in the sounds mine makes then,” he said. In a blink, he had a gun drawn from an invisible holster and shot the creature. It howled and writhed and smoke rose from boiling lesions on its body. Something splashed back on the drone and almost immediately, the drone went out of service.
On another screen, another news source, another camera, the lizard that had attacked Barnes earlier scrambled across the roof towards him again and Bucky went flying back, literally. The wings lifted him into the air, but not quickly enough. The lizard leapt up too, caught claws in Bucky’s leg and scored gashes down his thigh and calf as it fell away and then tried to climb back up. Bucky shot at it with the same gun he’d shot the demon with but it had less effect. He kicked at the lizard’s head with his good leg and urged the wings to take him higher. Again, the lizard scored down his leg and Bucky was obviously in pain as he tried to kick it free again. Eventually he must have hit a soft spot and the thing fell off, taking chunks of uniform and God knows what else with it.
This camera was too far away to pick up any words, but Nico saw Bucky’s hand go to his ear, to a comm. Then he was flying back down to the same roof. Another drone swooped in and everyone moved to the screen broadcasting that channel.
“Humans are messy creatures,” Barnes said to the struggling figure on the roof. It shifted again, acid and fluids and skin staying behind on the roof as it turned into something with feathers. “I don’t think you’ll be impressed with many of our souls. They’re all fucked up in one way or another.” He blinked tears and sweat out of his eyes and Nico wondered how badly he wanted to take the cowl off. He hated having his face covered. It was one thing he did manage to write in his reports.
“You’re a liar,” the creature said.
“You’re not the first to call me that,” Barnes agreed. “Definitely the ugliest though.”
“You’re a child playing dress up. You’re not Captain America.”
“Nah, they gave the job to the more good looking guy,” Bucky agreed and took the gun out again.
Nico wasn’t sure if he took a step to get closer or if his messed up leg finally gave out, but in the split second that he had to readjust, another animal demon, something catlike and long, lunged at him, at his arm, and sent him sprawling onto the roof.
“Bucky!” someone in the room cried as the demon towered over him, lifted itself on oily wings, talons like swords pointed to Bucky’s body as he tried to crawl away on a bad leg and bad arm.
And then something even darker crashed into the demon mid-air. The Winter Soldier? That wasn’t possible. Bucky was on the ground. But there was that silver arm, the heavy black tactical gear, holsters in every size and shape. That fucking mask that Nico wanted to burn himself the longer he read Bucky’s reports.
“That’s Sam!” Hattie shouted and then clapped a hand over her mouth. Her other hand tightened in Nico’s and they both stepped closer to each other. Sam grappled with the demon in flight. He was far nimbler on the wings, more dexterous and faster. He had something silver in his hand, a blade of some kind. Occasionally it glowed and it was the only way Nico could tell the demon and Sam apart, to find an end to the black wings and find Sam’s stealth wings, to make sure Sam was still in one piece.
The blade glowed as it made contact with the demon’s midsection and Sam wrenched it all the way up its body. Ichor and acid spilled onto the roof and now Nico’s hand tightened in Hattie’s as the news drone panned down quickly to watch the blood fall. To watch Joaquin pull Bucky out of the way, using the Falcon wings as covering as he did so.
The drone refocused on Sam, who had the stealth wings driven into either side of the demon’s neck, another weapon in his hand, something beaming and sharp. Redwing appeared directly in front of the drone before Sam made contact with the demon. The body fell out of frame in a split second and then Redwing was gone too.
Sam just about crashed down to the roof. There was blood running the length of his face and a swollen eye, scratches down his weapons arm. The kevlar was torn apart, but he seemed to be in one piece. He ripped the mask off of his face, jaw and mouth protected, no broken bones or loose hinges, yanked away the silver cast he’d had on his left arm, and there were no injuries on that side either.
Demonic creatures squealed and writhed where they’d been, decaying into blood and ash and stone. One was too close to Joaquin and Bucky, but it stopped too, claws just short of Joaquin’s jetpack.
Sam was running over to them before the wings could even retract fully. He skidded to his knees by Bucky’s body, lifted him up, held him close with an arm around his back, the other hand going to the back of Bucky’s head. Bucky reached for Sam’s arm with his human hand, covered in blood, bones sticking out of his forearm, elbow smashed visibly. Still, he put his hand on Sam’s arm, tried to squeeze it.
Sam brought their foreheads together.

“Stop moving,” Steve said. Normally, he would have snapped it. Reminiscent of a thousand bad nights in their apartment in the thirties. Stop moving, Stevie, you’ll upset your lungs. Stop moving, Stevie, those knuckles are never gonna heal. Stop moving, Stevie, you’ll press your cold toes against my leg again.
He reached over for the water cup Bucky wanted and helped him drink it slowly. When Bucky started to cough, Sam jolted awake on his other side. “What’s happening?” he asked, blinking blearily and scratching at the gauze over his eye.
“Bucky never learned how to swallow,” Steve said.
All three of them took in a breath to make a joke but none of them actually said it outloud. It felt too wrong. The air was still too raw. Everything about them was still raw.
Raw. Flayed.
Steve turned and retched into the sink on the other side of the room. A moment later, Sam’s hand found his back and gently rubbed between his shoulder blades. He was using the left hand, Steve figured. There were no bandages rubbing on Steve’s shirt.
“I’m so sorry,” Steve said for the millionth time in the twenty hours since the fight. “I should have never sent you out.”
“Shut the fuck up, Steve,” Bucky sighed. “There were a dozen other heroes out there. Most of them kids. We weren’t gonna sit around and do nothing.”
“I told you to make the sacrifice play. I told you to fight through it.” When Sam dropped something over his shoulders, something warm and smelling of disinfectant but also Sam’s cologne, he curled his fingers in it and hide his face against it.
“Yeah, ‘cause we’ve never been hurt before,” Bucky agreed. “Get over here, you dope,” he said and patted the bed with his metal arm.
Steve and Sam went back to the bed. There was enough room for Steve to sit with one leg kicked down the bed and the other resting over the edge, on the floor. Sam carefully sat on his lap like Steve had been the one in the fight. Like Steve might be hurt. Steve hugged his arms around Sam’s midsection and rested his cheek on the back of Sam’s shoulder, wrapped Sam’s blanket around him too.
“You know,” Sam said and then had to reach for the water himself. Sulfur was hell on the throat as it turned out. “You looked damn good in that outfit, Barnes,” he tried again. “But don’t go getting any ideas about changing your name.”
Bucky laughed, soft and a little pained, metal arm going around his ribs again. “Wouldn’t dream of it,” he said. “I’m banging fifty percent of all Captains America. If I took on the mantle, I’d skew my own numbers.”
Steve tsked on his other side and ran a hand through Bucky’s hair gently. “Behave, Barnes.”
“I’m sure there’s some sort of toy out there that’s supposed to emulate the Winter Soldier,” Sam said. “You could probably technicality your way out of it. Plus your own fingers,” he pointed out. “Then you’d be up to sixty percent.”
“Jesus,” Steve breathed and turned his eyes Heavenward. “Neither one of you would’ve done the job for what that thing wanted,” he said.
“Wow, Rogers, was that a joke about our near-death experience?” Bucky asked. But he couldn’t keep the faux outrage up. He grinned and reached for Steve’s hand against Sam’s thigh.
Steve kissed Sam’s shoulder and then brought Bucky’s knuckles to his mouth. “I’m so fucking happy you’re both okay,” he whispered softly. “I don’t know what I would’ve done if anything had happened.”
“Nothing did, Steve,” Sam said, turning to catch Steve’s lips on his. “You had a solid plan and we executed it like you said we would. We’re a good team.” He kissed him again and then reached over to rub his thumb along Bucky’s wrist so he didn’t feel too left out.
“Besides, if anything did happen, you’d become the first American to have to go to hell to get his lovers out. It’s normally a Greek thing, I think,” Bucky said.
Steve rolled his eyes, exasperated and so, so, so lucky in love.

“Do you think...they’re in trouble?” Hattie ventured, staring at the locked office door that they’d all been barred from coming near when Wilson, Barnes, and Rogers had walked in two hours earlier.
It had been three weeks since the Spawning, as people around the office, and literally no one else, was calling it. In that time, Nico had seen neither hide nor hair of any of them, or even really Fury. All of their projects had been granted stays of deadline and Nico had even been invited into a committee to sort through the reports of the Spawning. Mostly because Wilson and Barnes were both involved and that was basically only his M.O. now.
He hadn’t seen Fury call Wilson, Barnes, and Rogers in. Granted, they weren’t in their normal office space. The committee had actually been moved to Commander Rogers’ building. He’d been the commanding officer of the mission to take down the Spawning, so it was just easier to stay at his beck-and-call.
“It’s not Rogers’ office, is it?” Hattie asked.
Nico flipped another pencil into the ceiling. “No. His is a big corner office with all the windows.”
Hattie stood on her chair and yanked three pencils down. “So whose office is that?” she asked.
“Hat, I moved over here at the same time you did,” he pointed out.
“Yeah, but I know you’re cozy with Torres and he knows shit like that.”
“I am not!” Nico insisted like he always had to when the subject came up. “Besides, he’s Air Force, not Shield. Sam gave him the wings. He’s a freelancer.”
“Too bad. There’s no money in freelancing. You’ll have to be the bread-winner.”
Nico dragged his hands over his face. A pencil fell from the ceiling and hit him in the head. “Maybe it’s an empty office. A meeting room. Maybe they’re having a National Icons Meeting.”
“Maybe. I have to pee. Text me if anything happens?”
Nico gave her a half-hearted salute and slouched down in his chair. Of course, almost immediately the door opened and Steve Rogers stepped out.
Nico was so entirely fucked once again.
Because Steve Rogers was disheveled. Unkempt. Messy. Taken apart. Wrecked. In a very good way.
Nico brought his hand over his face but kept looking through his fingers.
Steve Rogers’ hair was sticking up every which way and there were at least three hickies on his neck. And one on his shoulder, which Nico could see because he was in that damn shark shirt, unbuttoned and half off his shoulder. There was a whole entire bite mark around his collarbone.
Steve Rogers looked around the hallway and glanced over the office and didn’t see Nico apparently. He tugged the shirt on straight and buttoned most of the buttons, except for two that Nico was pretty sure were missing at the top. And then, and then, he put on the jacket with the ribbing and the buckles and the dumb blue thread.
Steve Rogers ran a hand through his hair and took a deep breath. Just in time for the office door to open again and to have Bucky Barnes, with a lot of skin showing, appear and say loudly, “You took Sam’s underwear,” and haul him back into the room with the metal arm. Nico heard the door lock.
He slowly crawled out of the office, ran into Hattie in the next hall.
“Hey, did anything happen?” she asked, drying her hands on her pants.
“Nope,” Nico squeaked unconvincingly. “Just got sent home for the day.”
“Sweet,” she said. “Wanna go get some lunch?”
Nico nodded silently even though he wasn’t sure if he should try eating. He really needed to ask for that transfer.

The Live *Acoustic* STARSET Experience
As you have gathered by now, this whole blog is a collection of my analyses on STARSET’s music, as they have been my absolute favorite rock band since I was a pre-teen. Through the years, the music has always spoken to me on a spiritual level, and dissecting their music for an audience has been an absolute joy so far. However, this post is going to be a lot different, and in a very good way. I’m going to share my experience with the band LIVE, as they kicked off live performances post-COVID with a series of intimate acoustic events, and oh lordy Jesus it was a fantastic experience.
The performance as a whole was fantastic, but there are things about the performance that continue to remind me how special of a band STARSET is, not only in their music making, but in other facets as well. We all received raffle tickets, which I thought was kind of strange at first, but it made sense when they revealed a wheel that had the titles of roughly 50% of their music. If your raffle number was called, you got to go up and spin the wheel, and whatever song the wheel stopped at, STARSET would play a brand new acoustic cover of the song, which was DOPE. THE WHOLE SET WAS RANDOMIZED. They were only supposed to play eight songs, but they were having so much fun that they just kept going, calling numbers and playing great music. I heard acoustic covers of “Bringing It Down”, “Down With The Fallen”, “Ricochet”, and the super special song that started it all for them “My Demons” as a closer (This was the band’s choice and not on the wheel, but hot damn it was a great choice). Roughly 12 amazing covers later, every single human being in the pub was in a fantastic mood. The entire experience so far was very special. Normally, one would probably expect the experience to end their, but like I keep telling my audience, this is the best fuckin’ rock band that currently walks this earth, so this review is far from over.
Example of an acoustic cover: STARSET - WHERE THE SKIES END (Live Acoustic Demonstration) | HardDrive Online
After the performance, the audience got lined up to take a professional photo with the band, and while that happened, they started playing UNRELEASED MUSIC. Remember two posts ago when I talked about their new single “THE BREACH”? I heard that song A MONTH AND A HALF before it was released, along with others that STILL AREN’T OUT YET. You can’t sit there and tell me that this isn’t fan service, they care deeply about their fans and know how to make them happy. I looked around the huge line of STARSET fans, and it was really special seeing them absolutely losing their shit over this new music, because not only was the hype through the roof, but the music was good. Like, REALLY good. Hearing the music coming out now, I’m remembering some of the tracks that I heard, and let me tell you, there is something very special about that.
As a preface for this next part, the digital ticket we all received said that there was going to be a “meet and greet” after the performance, which to me seemed like a very short shake-their-hands-get-something-signed-and-get-the-hell-outta-the-way kinda deal. I am so happy to tell you that I was very wrong, the experience was so much better than that. The floor we were on was cleared and the members of STARSET were just... casually walking around talking to the audience. Holy motherloving shit, you could just talk to them for as long as you want about literally anything, and they were just chillin’ for like 3-4 hours after the performance. Myself, along with the group I was with, spent roughly 20 minutes with EACH member of the band just talking about the music industry, how they got to where they are, all of their musical backgrounds, and just casual back and forth talk. Not only was it good conversation, it was eye opening, and they taught me a whole plethora of things about how to be a musician in this day and age. I took everything each of them said to heart and I will use it to market myself and show the world everything I have to present as a musician myself. Holy shit, what an amazing experience. The ticket was $100, and it was well worth it.
I think the coolest thing about this is that this was only an acoustic event, NOT a normal live performance. I looked up videos of their live performances and I legit could not believe what I saw. They weren’t just concerts, they were whole ass experiences, and I know that’s such a flat thing to say, but I am saying it as genuinely as possible. Before you die, go see a live STARSET concert, whether it be an acoustic event or a normal concert. It will undeniably change your life.

Gwyneth - Part 2 - by Alinda
“Careful, Nathan,” Harry can hear Lily say. He looks into the lounge and spots Draco asleep on the sofa. He’s on his side, with his hands under his head. It’s a sight Harry has become accustomed to. As soon as Harry comes home from work, Draco lays down somewhere and drifts to sleep in seconds.
Lily stands in front of him, her hand placed softly on Draco’s belly. Nathan stands by the table and smiles at Lily.
“Come, Nathan. You can feel our little sister,” Lily says.
Nathan lets go of the table and takes a wobbly step towards Lily. Harry shakes his head. Ever since that little man discovered how to walk a couple of days ago, he wants to do nothing else. Harry doesn’t know how many bruises he’s already spelt away, as Nathan’s endeavours have more chance of failing than succeeding, ending with Nathan on the floor with tears in his eyes. But it doesn’t stop him from trying again. And crawling is no longer an acceptable means to get from one point to the other. Sometimes Harry wished that Narcissa would still talk to them, he’s dying to know if Draco was the same when he was little. Harry can see it, a younger Draco struggling to stay upright, but determined to make it to his destination without falling.
Nathan makes it to the sofa and places his small hands just in front of Draco.
“Good job,” Lily says. If Draco would be awake he would roll his eyes now and then point a finger at Harry, saying it was all his fault for letting his teacher side slip into their daily lives with a smile on his face. Harry never realised how often he says things like ‘good job’ when talking to his children, or his students even, until Lily started to repeat everything he says. Kids can be scary mirrors sometimes. Not that Harry would ever want to live without them, he loves his little once. Even Teddy, who only agreed to go to Hogwarts after Harry fire called the headmistress to make sure he was allowed to come home when his little sister would get born.
It’s still a couple of weeks away from Draco’s due date, but Harry wishes it was here already. He wants to meet the little girl hiding away in his belly. Even though Harry will miss the sight of Draco being pregnant. Draco doesn’t believe Harry, but he’s beautiful with his massive belly. If it wasn’t for the fact that Draco is exhausted most days when Harry comes home, Harry would show him just how beautiful he is. But for the last couple of weeks, Harry has been forced to take out his urge to fuck Draco by wanking in the shower until the urge goes away.
“Very careful,” Lily says as Nathan lifts his hand to place it next to his sister. “We don’t want to wake daddy.” Lily takes Nathan’s arm and makes sure the little boy doesn’t smash it onto Draco’s belly. They stand for a second and then Nathan giggles.
“That’s our sister,” Lily tells Nathan. Harry is stuck in wanting to move over to them and hug them into his arms and to keep watching his two kids giggle over the kicks their unborn sister makes inside Draco.
“Once she’s born, daddy won’t be ill anymore. Or cry and yell. I promise,” Lily says.
Harry bites his lower lip and blinks away the moisture in his eyes. He’d hoped the kids hadn’t notice, but nothing escapes them. Draco has been an emotional mess all pregnancy. It’s worse than the roller coaster of physical and emotional hardship he’d had when he was pregnant with Lily. But Harry had understood that. He’d felt the same fear and been on the same roller coaster. What happened with James was still fresh in their minds and didn’t leave them until Draco was holding Lily in his arms. But it had been better when they had Nathan. Time had helped them heal and Draco was more stable and enjoyed being pregnant. But this time around, he’s been all over the place. Harry wished he knew why. It looks like it’s more than just the hormones, but Draco swears that there isn’t anything else. And maybe he doesn’t even know why this time around it’s taking so much from him to get through his pregnancy.
It’s not that Draco doesn’t want the child growing inside him. No, he loves the little girl, Harry is sure. But the joy he had when they just found out is gone. Over the months it’s been replaced by tears. Harry remembers the day he came home to find Draco crying in the kitchen after he yelled at Nathan for no reason.
“I’m a horrible father,” Draco had cried.
“You’re not, just tired. We all snap sometimes when we’re tired,” Harry had assured him.
“You don’t get it. I yelled at our eight-month-old baby for no reason. He just tried to grab my cup with tea. He doesn’t know it’s dangerous. And I yelled at him like he murdered someone,” Draco yelled. “I can’t do this. I’m not even halfway and I’m already losing my shit. I can’t do this, Harry.” Big tears streamed down his cheek and Harry pulled him into his arm.
“Yes, you can. I’ll take some days off so you can rest.” Harry had taken Draco upstairs and run a bath for him. That night Draco had crawled against Harry and cried. Harry had taken a week off and Draco had calmed down a little at the end of the week.
But it hadn’t been the only time Harry had found him in tears. Or screaming at him or their children. And Harry could deal with being the one that got yelled at. But seeing Lily burst into tears because she made daddy mad, or have Teddy declare he’ll move back to his grandmother if Draco wouldn’t leave him alone, had hurt. But Harry doesn’t know what to do about it. He tried to tell Draco to keep it together around the kids, only to have the man fall apart in front of him. Harry doesn’t want to hear Draco say that he thinks he isn’t fit to be a farther, to raise their children, because Harry can’t think of anyone that would be better qualified than Draco. The man that gave up his job to become a full-time dad because he didn’t want them to be raised by nannies or house-elves. The man who braved modern technology and discovered YouTube so he could learn how to braid their daughter's hair. The man that gets up before dawn, so he can go watch the sunrise together with Teddy because the boy wanted to see it so badly.
Draco opens his eyes and looks at the two little people in front of him. Nathan giggles again and Draco smiles. Harry moves closer and kneels beside Nathan.
“Is she moving?” Harry asks.
“Yes, dad. Go feel her,” Lily says excitedly.
Harry places one of his hands next to the small once of his kids. Nathan wobbles a little, and Harry places his other arm around Nathan’s waist to make sure the boy doesn’t fall.
“She’s been keeping me up at night,” Draco says. Harry looks at him and sees the dark circles below his eyes.
“I told the principal that I’m taking time off after this week,” Harry says.
“Won’t you get in trouble?” Draco ask.
Harry shakes his head. “He’s still amazed by the fact that you are pregnant. And that magic is real. You would say that after a year and a half he would get used to the idea.”
“I love you,” Draco states.
“I love you too, daddy,” Lily says. “And Nathan, and dad, and Teddy, and baby sister.”
Harry and Draco both laugh. “We love you too, Lily,” Harry tells her as Nathan tries to climb on his leg. Harry takes him in his hands and lifts him in the air as he stands up.
“You’re going to help me make dinner, little man?”
“Harry,” Draco says. His voice is soft and Harry turns to look at him again.
“I know, sweetheart. I’ve already called healer Burke. She said she would send over prescriptions for your birth control potion.”
Draco closes his eyes as a tear slips from them.
“Draco, I know you’re struggling. You’ve been sick this entire pregnancy. Not to say your emotional state. We all want you to be okay, so let's make sure you will be after our little third miracle is born. We’ll have four beautiful children and I want to enjoy them with you, not just by myself.”
“Thank you,” Draco whispers.
“Don’t be sad, daddy,” Lily pipes in. “Sissy will be a good girl.”
“We’re not calling your baby sister Sissy,” Draco says.
“But it’s easy. She’s my baby sister, so Sissy.”
Harry laughs. “She has a point,” he says.
“Don’t you start. We’ll think of a name that suits her, and I can guarantee you it won’t be Sissy.” Draco snaps.
Harry bents over him and places a kiss on his forehead. “I know, sweetheart,” he says. And then he turns with Nathan in his arms and walks over to the kitchen. “What do you think, Nathan. Will Lily convince daddy to call your baby sister Sissy?”
“Non non,” Nathan babbles.
“Yeah, I don’t think so either. And don’t tell daddy, but I’ve been looking into names and I think we should call her Gwyneth. What do you think?” Harry says.
Nathan just puts his thumb in his mouth and Harry shakes his head. “I’ll ask your daddy tonight when you and Lily are asleep. And then we can stop this Sissy nonsense.”
“I think it’s perfect,” Draco says from behind Harry. Harry turns around and smiles at Draco. “As we are blessed to have her in our lives. Even if it was hell to have her,” Draco continues.
Harry steps closer to him and kisses him. “You are a champion for having her,” he tells Draco. And he means it. No matter how difficult these last couple of months have been, they both know little Gwyneth will be worth it.

Like Father Like Daughter
Father! Remus x Daughter! Reader
Also Reader x Oliver Wood, but lightly, a couple kisses xx
Authors note: I SUCK at time, years, and counting, I do not know what the deal is in 1975 in the HP universe so please please excuse that, merci lovely reader. Also! This was requested over a year ago although, as we know that’s about how long it takes me to write shit.
Request: Remus having a 7th year prefect daughter and not knowing until he teaches her?
Summary: Set during POA
Warnings: ANGST and daddy issues! Death! Bc I like trauma
Word Count: 1.9k
After an incredibly eventful train ride to school, and ensuring that Harry and his friends were okay, Remus hurried up to the headmaster's office. As it was his first year teaching there, and considering all that was going on with Sirius Black Dumbledore scheduled a meeting with the new professor.
“I don’t anticipate it will be an easy year, but no year here is ever easy or simple. Especially since Harry arrived on campus,” Dumbledore said.
“It was nice to see him again, he’s gotten so old, and he looks so much like James,” Remus said, melancholy lacing his voice.
“The boy could use some good positive reinforcement from somebody who knew his parents so personally. Please, do not share information regarding Sirius, I would rather not bring him down. Instead, I would prefer he focuses on his studies. Especially since we have such a talented Defense Against the Dark Arts professor this year,” Dumbledore said.
“Of course, now is that all for now?” Remus asked as he gathered his things, wanting to spend some time on the grounds before the student's arrival.
“Yes, I’m sure you’ll enjoy this year. I believe you’ll be pleasantly surprised by what Hogwarts has to offer.”
“I’m sorry?” He asked, pausing to look at the headmaster, confused by his statement on the school.
“Oh nothing,” Dumbledore said with one of his signature winks.
Remus smiled, unsure how else to respond. “Well, I’ll see you at the feast later tonight.”
“Certainly,” Dumbledore said, seemingly having forgotten about his odd statement, already focusing on something on his desk.
Meanwhile, Y/n went along with her boyfriend, Oliver Wood to the feast.
“I wonder what kind of crazy shit will happen this year,” you said, thinking aloud.
“Maybe we’ll get a somewhat normal year for once,” he proposed, hopefully. “And a good bloody season.”
“At Hogwarts?” You retorted. “Impossible. And of course you’ll have a good season, you’re the best damn quidditch player I’ve ever seen.”
Despite a bit of red flushing his cheeks, Wood brushed off the comment. “I wonder who this years Defense Against the Dark Arts professor is.”
“I haven’t heard anything,” she said with a shrug.
“Well we’ll see,” he said and gave her a kiss on the cheek. “Enjoy your feast with Weasley.”
You smiled back at him, “Oh I will, it’s a promise.” you said before splitting, as you went to go meet with Percy Weasley, and Dumbledore before the feast's official start.
The feast went as normal for Y/n, she was mostly preoccupied with seeing friends she hadn’t seen since the last school year ended, and her head girl duties. Being a Gryffindor she felt that the year would present some challenges, considering the difficulties her house had caused in the past two years. Y/n had nothing against Harry Potter, in fact she was quite fond of him, having tutored him in a couple of subjects. Although, she understood the trouble he and his friends were fond of.
Remus on the other hand was unnerved at the announcement of the Head Girls last name, La Rosa. Her being Head Girl meant she was a seventh year, meaning she must have been born in 1976. The math happened in his head faster than Remus would like to admit. Remus absolutely knew a La Rosa in 1975 who managed a disappearing act after a couple of months together, and a small scare of sorts. Although, he brushed off the arithmetic, and Dumbledore’s dubious wink with a large swig of wine, which earned him a judgemental scoff from Snape.
Eventually, of course, the feast ended and the tired first years returned to their rooms while friends and couples reunited, and Filch stalked the halls with Mrs. Norris close behind.
Both Remus and Y/n’s day started off with breakfast in the Great Hall as each had a first period in their schedule. Y/n’s day kicked off with charms, and ended with Defense Against the Dark Arts. She ate breakfast with Oliver and a couple of their friends, yet left early enough so that the two could walk to class together without him being late. They had a couple of classes together but knew that as the year went on their other half would respectively get quite busy.
Y/n was having a fantastic first day, excited for lunch she made her way from the Towers to the Hall, which was abuzz with talk of “Professor Lupin.”
“He let us do actual magic in class!” you heard one third year exclaim with a great deal of excitement.
“I’m just glad he didn’t prattle on about his book deal for the entire period,” some Ravenclaw said to their friend which made Y/n laugh.
“How was Snape?” Wood asked as you sat down next to him, he had sent a couple of letters over summer bragging about how he wouldn’t be taking Potions, and she was.
“The same, angry that he isn’t teaching DADA, now I’m more intrigued by this Professor Lupin,” you responded.
“Merlin, Y/n, it’s the only bloody thing I’ve heard all day!”
“I heard someone earlier say, ‘I’m glad he didn’t brag about his book deal through the whole class.’” You responded with a giggle.
“I can’t believe they ever hired that man,” Wood said with a snort.
With that the two of you started lunch, your friends Ethel and Roberto joining you only a little while into the block.
You had a couple of classes and a free period from the time spanning between lunch and when you finally got to step into Professor Lupin’s class. The buzz about the new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher. had turned into a roar in just a few hours.
Despite being early you were not the first student in the class. It being a seventh-year course there were only eight of you taking the class, and there were already five of your peers sitting at desks. One of which being your boyfriend who had saved you a seat near the front of the class.
“You are late La Rosa,” he rudely teased as you set your things down and sat next to him.
“You know I can go find another seat, right?” As if on cue the last of your classmates filed in and filled the last couple of seats.
“Can you?” He asked with a goofy smile plastered over his face.
“Well Weasley owes me a favor and I’m sure you’d love to sit next to him for the whole three hour period.” “Oh that’s just cruel sweetheart.” Before you could retort your new professor walked into the room, immeadiatley silencing the class. Oftentimes the last class of the day meant students were groggy, and had shorter attention spans than usual, but this class was on high alert.
“Good afternoon, let’s go ahead and introduce ourselves however you deem fit. My name is Remus Lupin, and I am clearly your Defense Against the Dark Arts instructor this year, any questions?”
In response you along with a couple of your peers shook your head ‘no’.
“Fantastic, let’s go ahead and start with our Head Boy, if you could introduce yourself sir?”
Percy excitedly introduced himself to the class, not failing to make the new professor aware of his many, many achievements, after him a slytherin you had a strong level of distaste for, and on it went until you were left as the last student to introduce herself.
“My name is Y/f/n Y/m/n La Rosa, I want to write spell books once I leave Hogwarts, my favorite Quidditch team is Puddlemere, and my favorite food is milk chocolate although I’ve been told chocolate isn’t a food I disagree.” “I have to take your side Miss. La Rosa, chocolate is in fact a food, and deserves its own damn food group,” Lupin shot you a smile, then looked around at the small class. “I feel like you should all be writing down that your professors favorite food is chocolate for when you have to impress me at the end of the year.”
Remus was genuinely confused by Y/n’s presence. He had decent intuition and something about the seventh year was throwing him off, and it wasn’t bad which honestly only confused him more. He decided it would be better to get ahead of it in order to not let his thoughts ruin his teaching.
“Well that’s it, class is over. Miss La Rosa if you wouldn’t mind staying after class for just a moment?” “Of course professor,” you said.
“Ooh in trouble already?” Oliver said and gave you a peck to which you rolled your eyes. “I’ll see you in the common room later love.” “Don’t forget our meeting tonight Y/n,” Percy said as he sauntered out the room which earned a second eye roll from you.
Even though it didn’t take long, it felt like an eternity for the room to clear. All of a sudden your throat was in your heart, or, something. Whatever it was something was happening.
“I know this is going to come off as odd but I have an important question,” Lupin said, his eyes kind, no sense of a reprimand coming.
“Sure Professor, what is it?”
“What’s your mothers name?”
You figured he noticed your last name, and had maybe worked with your mum.
“Marie Dulcinea La Rosa,” you said. “Why?”
Remus’ mind started racing at a million miles an hour. “Did she attend Ilvermorny?” “Yes, is everything alright?” “I’m sorry dear, just two more questions.”
You responded with a single nod.
“Did your mother ever tell you who your father is, and are you a werewolf?”
A look of shock crossed your face and you clutched your bag. “I’m not supposed to answer that question professor.” “Y/n, I am, I also dated a Marie La Rosa in 1975, that same Marie attended Ilvermorny.”
“Are you trying to insinuate-”
“Yes.”
You walked out of the classroom as fast as your feet could carry you. You weren’t quite sure where you were going but you were crying and you wanted to be as far away from Remus Lupin as possible and your mind was far to occupied to think up a destination. Somehow that destination ended up being Dumbledore’s office, which by some means was open to you.
“You must have known, you know everything.” Not the best choice of words but it seemed to get the point across.
“That Professor Lupin is your father? Yes dear I did happen to know that.”
“And how long have you known that?” “Since the year you were born, Y/n, your mother and father both fought in the war and your mother came to me when she was pregnant with you. She didn’t want your father to know because she wanted him to stay and fight when she couldn’t. She wanted to raise you away from the war but she couldn’t ask him to abandon the cause.” “Does he know that she’s dead?” “No I am afraid that he doesn’t.” “Marie is dead?”
You turned to see Remus Lupin standing in the entrance of the office. He was distressed and had clealry followed you to the headmasters office.
You gave a curt nod to answer his question.
“Y/n, I am so sorry, I didn’t know, I shouldn’t have ever let your mother think that I would value anything over her and you.”
“You have to know how hard it is growing up a werewolf with absoluetly no help. With no one to help you through your first transition, with no one to tell you that everything’s going to be okay. Then on top of that growing up thinking that you were nothing to your father, and losing your mum at 14?”
Remus reached into his pocket and pulled out a mostly intact chocolate bar and held it out, towards his daughter.
“Let me fix it? Please.” It was a plea, and a kind request, an apology, all tied up in a chocolate bar.

maybe in another universe | h. holland
this is supposed to be pt. two to the sweater, but you don’t need to read that before reading this!
warnings: alcohol consumption but everyone is of legal drinking age, a little bit of angst(?)
Tumblr media
harry holland was still on your mind five months after your break up. he was still the love of your life and nothing could change that. as much as you missed him you guys were over, nothing could change that. everything reminded you of him, as it should have after spending more than two years together. you couldn’t help but wonder if he still thought of you.
autumn leaves had already begun to fall. you were sitting on your bed, a blanket wrapped around your shoulders to keep you warm, as you were working on an analysis for your statistics class. you missed the way he would keep you company while you were doing your schoolwork. you missed the way he would remind you to take breaks when you were too motivated to stop, or when he would get you to focus when you lacked motivation. you missed the comfort of his company, you missed him. after saving the document, you shut your laptop and thought about him. but if the universe wanted us together, then we would’ve stayed together. in an attempt to distract yourself, you headed to the kitchen to make yourself a snack and a cup of tea.
“things will get better,” you said in a failed attempt to make light of how you were feeling.
hours later you found yourself getting ready for a party. allie had texted you half an hour ago saying that she was coming by your place at eight and that you guys were going to go to a party that a mutual friend of hers was throwing. you wore a black mini dress, did your hair and put on some makeup. after putting your heels on, you looked at yourself in the mirror and felt confident.
you poured a shot but a knock at your door prevented you from taking it. you opened the door to see allie standing there. her tanned skin practically glowing under the porch lights, and her red dress hugging every curve of her body. she looked like a goddess, and she knew it. “hi lovey!” she pulled you in for a hug. “are you ready to go?” you looked back inside at the shot glass sitting on your counter, but instead grabbed your bag and phone and nodded. “great! let’s go!” you followed allie as she got into a car, an uber perhaps, and then you were off to the party.
bodies flooded the house. as you and allie shoved your way past you found yourself searching the room to see if anyone else you knew was here. before you knew it, you and allie found yourselves in the kitchen pouring and mixing your own drinks. mostly vodka, very very little of anything else. your eyes scanned the room looking to see if harry was here, but you didn’t spot him.
“you know, y/n, you need to stop acting as if you’re gonna run into him everywhere! just relax dude, have fun!” allie said, taking a sip from the red solo cup in her hand shortly afterwards. you followed her actions, taking a sip of the mostly vodka, barely anything else, concoction that you had made. scrunching up your face at the taste, you looked around the room for some exit - there for not even 5 minutes and you already wanted to leave.
“i still don’t understand why you dragged me out here allie.” you took another sip of your drink, suddenly thinking that this odd mixture tastes good.
“you are gonna have fun tonight and you are gonna thank me, babe. trust me.” a sly smile appeared on her face. though she didn’t have anything planned, you could tell that something was going to happen. you wanted so desperately to go back home and work on an essay for one of your classes. you wanted so desperately to get out of here and go get some fast food, then go home and binge-watch new girl. you didn’t want to be alone, you just wanted to leave the party.
the cogs in your brain started turning as soon as she gave you a look that screamed she was scheming. what in the world did she have planned? you thought. you leaned back onto the granite countertop, deep in thought when it suddenly dawned on you. she’s going to get me absolutely wasted.
allie grabbed your hand and led you out of the kitchen, through the sea of bodies yet again to where everyone was dancing. blinding lights by the weeknd was playing through the speakers as you and allie sang along and moved to the beat. for a while, it felt like all of your concerns had left your body and all you were focused on was dancing with your best friend. swaying your hips back and forth. you were drunk, but you were having fun. you forgot that you were heartbroken, that was all you needed.
•••
harry holland walked into the pub with his friends and brothers. they sat down at a table near the back of the pub, as per usual, and ordered a few beers. ‘guys night’ was what they had called it, but harry wasn’t dumb. he knew he had been sulking for too long and they were trying to take his mind off the breakup. it had been five months, but the wound was still as fresh as ever.
“we’re just gonna have a few rounds and then go to drew’s party, yeah?” sam asked. of course he knew the plan, but he was making sure that his brother knew the plan. harry nodded in agreement, but he didn’t know why they didn’t just pre at their house, or how they even knew drew. harry stayed in the dark with his questions.
harry looked around the dim pub as if his eyes were searching for an escape. he may not of had any work to do, but he wanted to spend the night watching netflix with tessa by his side. harry was never one to turn down drinks and a night out, but he was out of it.
tom snapped his fingers in front of harry’s face, breaking his thoughts and bringing him back to the conversation.
“you alright there?” tom said lightheartedly, a gentle laugh being let out.
“yeah i’m fine.” the drinks had arrived just as harry finished his sentence. he grabbed one and took a long sip of the alcohol, hoping that it would loosen him up and make him more present.
the group quickly went back to their initial conversation, except harry participated this time around.
“do you even know who’s gonna be at drew’s party?” tom asked, taking a sip from the beer in his hand. the truth was, no one knew who was going to be there.
drew was one of sam’s friends that he had met through a girl that he was seeing at the time. even after she and sam decided that they weren’t really meant for each other, he and drew stayed close. drew had a reputation for throwing huge parties, and they were the best parties. though harry didn’t want to admit it to himself, he really wanted to go knowing that he could take his mind off of y/n and find another girl in place of her.
a few more drinks and an uber ride later, the boys found themselves outside of drew’s house. it wasn’t extravagant, but it was a little bit larger than harry, tom’s, and harrison’s shared house.
they walked up to the door and let themselves in. sam led them down a hallway, pushing past the crowd of people so they could enter the kitchen. as they walked in and started pouring their own drinks, harry couldn’t help but notice the couples sprinkled about the room, making out with no shame. he was ashamed to admit it, but he wishes he had someone with him so he could be one of those couples.
sam handed him a red solo cup filled with a mixture that was sat in a cooler. harry didn’t know how long it was sitting there for, but it was still cold, and that’s all he needed. harry downed the drink, handing the now empty red cup back to sam for a refill as all his friends looked at him with wide eyes.
“mate, he just handed you the cup, what the fuck?” harrison said. the whole group was shocked. it wasn’t a secret that harry was more likely to get wasted at a party, but they’ve never seen him like this.
sam handed harry back his cup, now full, and said, “don’t you dare down this, i’m not getting you another drink and i sure as hell won’t be carrying you home.” though sam would willingly give up a kidney for his twin, he didn’t want harry to turn into an alcoholic. he was one of the few people who know how bad the break up was for him, and he really didn’t want harry to have a bad time tonight because he was dwelling. somehow sam knew that harry was going to be okay tonight, but that didn’t stop him from worrying.
•••
four drinks later, you and allie had teamed up for beer pong. the table was set up in the backyard of whoever’s house you were in. it had been a few hours, and you still hadn’t figured out who owned the house or whose party you were at, but the important part was you and allie kicked the other team’s ass. it was a glorious moment for you, and in it, you completely forgot about harry holland.
you were very obviously drunk at this point. after almost falling over multiple times while you and allie made your way back inside the house, your eyes landed on harry. he was with tuwaine, harrison, sam and tom. you wanted so badly to believe that you were imagining this, but as tuwaine noticed you and allie, he immediately stiffened up.
harry had a cup in his hand and was leaning against the countertop. the black bomber jacket that you used to steal was the only thing you processed about him before allie pulled you into a quieter area of the house.
“shit, babe i swear i didn’t know he was coming or that he was even invited. i’m so so sorry y/n.” allie said. she was freaking out as much as you were, but instead of freaking out with her, you brushed it aside.
“allie, seriously it’s fine. let’s get another drink, get me wasted, dance a little bit, and then let's go to a twenty-four hour macca’s!” the alcohol was clearly speaking and acting for you as you dragged allie back into the kitchen, which was now holland free, grabbed two cans of beer and handed one to allie. you opened your can and took a large sip. the plan was in motion and nothing was going to stop you. allie looked concerned for you, but she knew there was nothing she could ever do to stop you once you’ve gotten this far. allie knew the night wasn’t going to end well.
the two of you made your way back to the dance floor and began dancing with each other. the sound by the 1975 was filling your ears, you and allie singing loudly along with it.
as the song ended you decided that you couldn’t stay inside any longer, so you and allie went out to the back where you had played beer pong earlier. it was much quieter than the loud and bass-heavy room you were previously in, much cooler too. you’d had enough of the sweaty bodies pressed around you, so you and allie went to the back of their backyard and sat in some empty chairs.
you had begun to go on about how you were sure you weren’t going to remember much from this night, transitioning into questioning how much you had to drink. allie laughed at you as you tried to count on your fingers, but failing to add up the total. then there was comfortable silence between the two of you. the occasional cheering from the beer pong players accompanied by the conversations that other people in the yard were having had calmed you down. you looked up at the sky, a little cloudy, but you could still make out a few of the constellations that decorated the night sky. it was well after midnight at this point, but it felt like the night was just beginning. you looked back at allie who smiled at you, and you smiled back with your red lipstick stained lips.
•••
harry stumbled down the steps as he decided to call an uber back to his house. after seeing you, he decided that the universe was giving him a reason to go home and be alone. he was also a little bit too drunk to hold his own and any reason to leave was a good reason.
as the copper curly-headed boy walked up to the sidewalk he noticed two girls talking. one wearing a red bodycon dress, the other wearing a black dress. they were clearly invested in the conversation, but as the red dress wearing girl, she froze. harry’s eyes widened as he realized who she was. to ease the awkward tension between him and the two girls, one of whom still didn’t know he was there, he gave allie a small smile which she returned.
if he had known the girl who he was still in love with was going to be at drew’s party, he wouldn’t have shown up.
allie had walked away without harry knowing, leaving y/n alone with him. they were standing out on the sidewalk alone in silence while harry was struggling to call an uber. harry let out a quiet, ‘fuck,’ as he realized his uber was 15 minutes away. he sighed and quietly laughed at how badly his night was ending. harry looked to his left to see y/n still standing there.
“so, how was the party for you?” y/n asked. allie forced you to talk to him, bribing you with a nice bottle of rosé and a fresh baguette, things that y/n could easily buy, but just didn’t want to. the offer was impossible for y/n to turn down, mainly because you were a sucker for wine.
harry looked at the girl next to him, confused that you were talking to him, but relieved that they weren’t left in awkward silence.
“it was good,” he paused for a second before continuing, “wait, how do you and allie know drew?” harry moved to sit on the edge of the sidewalk, and you followed his actions.
“drew is one of allie’s mutual friends. i think she knows him because of hayden greene, not sure though.” silence reentered their conversation, but this time, it was more comfortable for the both of them. minutes passed before you spoke up again. “i’m gonna be honest with you for a second, i only went because allie dragged me out here. she said i was wallowing in self pity.” a small smile appeared on your face and you gently shook your head knowing that allie was telling the truth.
“sam planned our little escapade. honestly, i’d rather be on the couch with tess right now watching netflix or a film that i’ve seen one too many times.” he sighed realizing his brother’s efforts had failed to distract him and had failed to give him a night free of you, but he was glad he saw you and was talking to you. “there’s not a day that goes by where i don’t think about you, you know that?” a small chuckle left his mouth. he was looking at her, hoping that you would look back at him, but you never did. eyes focused on the road in front of them, eyes on the lawn of the house across the street from drew’s, eyes on the sewer grates, eyes on everything but his brown ones. “i really miss you.” the alcohol was making him say this, but his words were nothing but the truth.
the desperation in harry’s voice was evident to you.
“i miss you too h.” you tilted her head to look up at him, and for the first time that night, you had a good look at his face. your eyes focused on every freckle that appeared on his skin, his lips, on every curl that you once swore was perfect. “you know, maybe in another lifetime we’d still be together h.” you let out a small laugh. ever since the breakup, you’d blamed everything on yourself. you’d convinced yourself that if you hadn’t made the decisions that you did near the end of your relationship that he would still be with you.
harry looked down at the road under his white high top converse, taking in the words you had just said. his eyebrows furrowed as confusion took over his thoughts.
“why can’t we be together in this lifetime? i know our breakup wasn’t something that either of us wanted.” he looked back up at you, shifting his body slightly to face you better, and you mirrored his actions to face him. he took your hands in his, his thumbs running over the backs of your hands as if he was trying to memorize them for the last time. “can’t we fix us?” harry was pleading at this point and he knew it, but he just wanted you back.
“harry, i-“ the uber pulled up to the house.
“come with me, we can go back to my place and talk this over. i’ll uber you home afterwards. please, just come with me y/n.” harry searched your eyes for any sort of opposition, but he didn’t find anything. you nodded and stood up. harry opened the car door, and after confirming that it was his uber, you both got in.
the ride back to harry’s place was filled with silence. you texted allie apologizing for leaving without her, but you promised her that you’d tell her everything that happened. the good and the bad.
after getting into the house, you quietly sighed in relief after taking your heels off. harry was now shoeless as he led you into the kitchen. you sat on a barstool, forearms resting on the countertop that capped their kitchen island. harry’s back was facing you as he grabbed two glasses of water in an attempt to sober you both up. you so desperately wanted more alcohol in your system, doubting your abilities to talk to your ex without the liquid courage.
“harry, i still love you. i really do, but didn’t we break up for a reason?” you couldn’t look at him. being the first to break the silence, you were sure your hands were shaking a little bit. they sat wrapped around the glass of water harry previously handed you.
“y/n this is the first time we saw each other in months, that has to be a sign!” his tone rose as he began to get really passionate. harry never believed in signs from the universe, but tonight changed everything. when he saw you at drew’s party he knew he had to do something, as if the universe was nudging him in your direction. “i know i never believed in the universe giving signs, but tonight had to mean something, right?” his volume dimmed at the end, as if he was getting too vulnerable and needed to retreat. you looked up at him, needing to search his expression. a sigh left your lips as you realized for the second time that night that he was wearing his heart on his sleeve just for you.
“i don’t know.” maybe the universe wanted the two of you to have closure from one another or maybe the universe was pushing you two to get back together. you couldn’t tell what the universe had in store for you, but harry on the other hand was sure that you two were supposed to get back together. he knew in his heart that this was going to be his last chance to get you back, and he was ready to put everything on the line for you. after all, he was still in love with you.
silence. no one said anything for what felt like an eternity. as you started drinking your water, harry started to bite his nails - a habit he had only when he was nervous. you picked up on this immediately and after putting down the glass, you reached over to gently pull his hand away from his mouth. your hand on his skin brought harry a familiar warmth that he didn’t realize that he was so desperate for. as for you, the feeling of your hand on his wrist only made you miss the feeling of his lips on yours.
enough was enough, you decided. you got up from the barstool and walked around to the other side of the kitchen island until you were inches away from him. he closed the gap between you, hands resting on your hips. your hands moved up to rest against his chest. the two of you didn’t need to say anything, you both knew what you wanted.
“i love you h.” your voice was so soft that you weren’t sure if he heard, but as a small genuine smile appeared on his face you knew he did.
“i’m never letting you go again y/n. i promise.” he lifted one hand from your waist, curling all his fingers down towards his palm except for his pinky and his thumb. you moved one of your hands to lock pinkies with him, then pressing the pads of your thumbs together to secure the promise.
“i don’t ever want to lose you again,” you said, moving your hands up so they rested at the nape of his neck, fingers playing with the curls that sat there. he leaned in to kiss you, and you met him in the middle. his lips were soft, the kiss tender. when you two pulled away from each other, he wrapped his arms around you, bringing you in for a hug. in that moment you decided that you were never going to let him go, not again.

Moceit/found family Superfamily AU
(Tw: mention of panic attacks, depression, anxiety, death, kidnapping, human trafficking. Nothing is shown in huge detail at all but be warned)
Also this is a long plot so bare with me:
Okay so Janus Trần was a 20 year old law student by day, world famous super hero named Deceit by night
His power was that Janus had the ability to mind control people if they looked him in the eyes
And while Janus had always used his powers for good, most people (especially the media) still feared Deceit for what he could potentially do
But that was fine, right? I mean he didn’t really have any friends as Janus and as Deceit the world hated him, but he worked better alone! He was definitely not suffering from crippling loneliness... definitely not...
Everything changed when, while stopping a back robbery, another hero named Morality thought Deceit was the one robbing the bank and tried to fight him
And even when after the mixup was cleared up, Janus was still pissed
Except staying mad at Morality was kind of hard. Because instead of trying to justify himself, Morality told him he was really really sorry and insisted on taking Deceit out for lunch to make up for it
During lunch Janus learned a couple of things:
1) Morality had no concept of keeping secrets. He revealed that his real name was Patton Saleh, he was 22, he had two moms and worked at their bakery, and his powers were to manipulate the weather around him based on his emotions
2) Patton was one stubborn SOB. He payed for the meal (despite Janus’ arguing), he gave Janus his number and started texting him later that night, and decided that they were going to be friends, whether Janus liked it or not
3) Janus was already falling in love with this human ball of sunshine... well shit
The two began hanging out as heroes almost daily (Janus swore that he was annoyed by this) and even began teaming up together to fight together
And that actually worked out really well! They both had way better success rates when they fought together, and Janus really felt happier then ever now that he finally had a friend
The issue was that Janus still didn’t want to give up any of his secrets. About a year after they first met (a year of keeping his growing and growing crush on Patton hidden) and Patton still didn’t know Deceit’s real name, age, occupation, or literally anything
This caused a wedge between the two of them that eventually turned into a huge argument. This ended with Patton screaming that he refused to give his heart to someone who won’t give anything back in return and storming off
The two didnt talk for months and the depression and loneliness hit Janus way harder then ever. He even considered not being a hero anymore because of it
Then one day he saw on the news that Morality got hurt in a battle. Badly hurt. And it was a fight that the two of them could have easily won together but because he was alone, Patton was hurt. Because of him, Patton was hurt
Janus booked it over to the Storytellers’ headquarters (Thomas had the ability to heal wounds and acted as the superhero medical assistance for anyone who needed it)
Storyteller explained that Patton would be fine but he would probably be unconscious for a while and that Janus could sit by his bed to wait
While there, seeing the love of his life so pale and lifeless, Janus broke down and told Patton everything. He confessed his name and his whole backstory- how his parents kicked him out when he was 16 because of his powers. He confessed that he had been scared of opening up ever since then and getting hurt again. And he confessed that he loved Patton so so much, even though he didn’t feel worthy to love someone as wonderful as Patton
Three days later, Patton woke up. And the first thing he did is ask for Janus; not Deceit though, he asked for Janus. Meaning Patton had heard everything while he was out. Once Storyteller gave him the all clear to go into his room, Patton immediately pulled Janus in for a kiss and said that he’d been in love with Janus since that first lunch
Janus wasn’t crying. He was not sobbing hysterically and holding Patton’s hand like a lifeline thank you very much.
Once Patton got back on his feet, the two started dating for real. And sure, they still occasionally fought about Patton not putting himself first or Janus hiding things, but they worked through these things each and every time
Half a year later and the two moved in together
And a year after that and they finally got married
Fast forward to when Janus was 31 and Patton was 33. Patton owned his own restaurant, Janus was a very successful lawyer, and the hero thing was going great
One day while Janus was in court, Morality was patrolling the city when he noticed a figure in black hood and mask graffitiing a building. He went to stop the person but as soon as he touched them, he started having vivid, graphic hallucinations of his worst nightmares until he collapsed on the ground screaming and crying
Eventually Janus got a call saying what happened, and he rushed downtown to pick up his husband and take him home
The hallucinations didn’t end until twelve hours later and the first thing Patton said when he was able to speak was that they needed to find the person who did that to him. But not to get revenge like Janus thought, but to help them
Janus tried to appeal to his husband but Patton was deadset that before the person lashed out, he saw their eyes and they looked like a scared child that needs help rather then a villain
After a week of searching the duo tracked down the kid and found him robbing a 7/11. The kid was hesitant to explain anything, but he didn’t attack them. Before he ran away though, he told them to call him Anxiety and that he was sorry he hurt Morality. Patton considered the interaction a win
Over the course of a year, they continued to reach out to Anxiety. They bought him food whenever they saw him, got him warmer clothes in the winter, they even invited him to sleep over at their house when he got sick or too tired to go home. But he still refused to give his name or take off his mask, even when Janus or Patton trusted him enough to reveal theirs
And Janus found himself getting attached to this sarcastic, introverted little kid. He taught Anxiety to better control his powers (turned out that that first day with Patton was an accident because Anxiety was stressed out) and how to defend himself without powers
The breaking point was reached when one day, Anxiety came to them in the middle of a panic attack. They calmed him down enough for him to explain that, when he was eight his powers manifested, and his mom started abusing him and calling him a monster- and now she has been threatening to kill him
Janus and Patton felt their hearts’ break for their kid so they promised they wouldn’t let him go back to her. Finally Anxiety took off his mask and told them his name was Virgil Brown and he was 15 years old
Thanks to Janus’ lawyer skills, getting Virgil’s mom thrown in jail and obtaining custody of Virgil was easy (when they asked Virgil if he wanted to live with them, he started crying because no one had ever made him feel as safe as Patton and Janus had)
The family got Virgil a therapist and continued to help him with his powers and everyone was content with their perfect little family
Until one day two years later Janus got intel that a local gang was transporting a dangerous weapon to a new location and him and Patton went to intercept the gang before they could
The bust went well but when they went to break down the door of the transport van, they were shocked to find not a weapon, but a seven year old kid chained up and giving off waves of electric energy
Patton flashed Janus the puppy dog eyes so of course they took the kid home with them. The kid was scared out of his mind but with some gentle coaxing from Patton, he told them his name was Roman, he was actually ten but he had been starved his whole life so he was quite small, and when he was five his mom, dad, and twin brother were killed and he was kidnapped to be used as an energy source
Janus and Patton already mentally signed the adoption papers in their heads at this point. And Virgil saw this scared child and saw his past self in him so of course Virgil immediately decided he would die for his new brother
They slowly worked to get Roman back to a physically healthy point and to open up about what happened to him while he was kidnapped, and it turned out that Roman was actually a very talkative, excitable kid when he was not fearing for his life
And each detail Roman gave about how he was beaten and locked away just cemented the fact that Janus and Patton were going to give this kid the childhood he deserved
Life had been going well. Virgil graduated high school and started both med-school and going out on patrol with his dads on occasion, and Roman thrived in school as one of the most popular kids
Of course that was not the end of the story because their lives have never been that simple
Fellow hero Mindmeld died in a building collapse and in his will, he asked someone to go to his apartment and get all his affairs in order
Janus decided he would and lawyers up to go over to the given address. And when he got there, he immediately freaked the fuck out because why was there a kid in the apartment?
Turned out Mindmeld had a four year old son named Logan whose mother died years ago and who was now an orphan with no other relatives. A four year old who also had his late father’s telekinetic abilities that made his toys fly around the air and attack Janus when he tried to pick Logan up
You get the picture by now, of course they adopted Logan
And at first Logan was super uncomfortable and closed off to these strangers and kept asking for his dad
But then one night he had a nightmare and when Patton and Janus came to help him, he sleepily called the duo Dad and Papa and they knew they were making progress
Roman and Virgil were both kind of jealous of Logan at first because to them it looked like he was the favourite of the family as the baby, but Logan was such a curious, sweet little kid that no one could really be mad at him for very long
So Patton and Janus had three kids. Three super powered, traumatized kids.
Except that number soon went up to four. One of the members of the gang that had kidnapped Roman- who was now twelve- confessed from prison that they had never actually killed Roman’s brother
Instead they had sold Remus across the country to a supervillain organization that dealt in trading superpowered kids. Apparently Remus had the ability to manipulate soundwaves
So the parents left Virgil in charge and hauled ass to this organization.
Through some potentially illegal interrogation techniques, they managed to find out which warehouse Remus had been kept in this whole time
They found Remus- who had been locked away in a soundproof cell alone for years- and Remus immediately freaked out and lashed out with his powers when they freed him
The sound wave he released knocked down the buildings around him and ended up temporarily deafening Janus and Patton
Remus started freaking out because he thought they were going to hurt him but both of them were only concerned with this poor, scared kid’s safety
Patton told Remus that they had Roman in safety and immediately Remus calmed down and started sobbing and begging to see his brother
They brought Remus home with them and as soon as the brothers saw each other, they were both hysterical. They refused to even let go of each other for a whole week
Remus took even longer then his brother to adjust. He outright avoided being around anyone in the family other then Roman
Finally Remus confessed that he felt horribly guilty about what he did to his new dads and that he was scared he’d hurt someone again
But then Virgil sat down with his new brother and talked to him about the first time he met Patton and how he hurt him too. He tells him about how he knows what it feels like to think that no one could ever love you unconditional, but assures that with Janus and Patton it’s possible. They all have a group hug afterwards, and Remus soon blossomed around his family
And that where the story ends off: a long, long way away from the silently suffering Janus from the beginning who kept to himself, because he thought that no one would ever love him for who he really was.
Because sometimes a family is
a nine year old kid genius who skipped two grades and is in the habit of recreating the Matilda scene for fun
two sixteen year old twin boys that are known citywide as Deceit’s former sidekicks turned solo heroes named Lightning and Thunder
a twenty-four year old nightmare bender who now mentors under Storyteller as the newest superhero healer
and two forty/forty-two year old retired heroes that love their kids and each other to the ends of the Earth and back

Imagine: You have a serious argument and he lashes out in front of unsuspecting eyes.
Pairing: Klaus x Human!Reader
Warnings: Violence, Traumatic distress.
Words: 1694
Edited: Yes
Recently, my husband Klaus and I have been in a really bad place in our relationship. Rightfully so, Elijah staked himself to save me from possessing The Hollow and killing myself to make certain Klaus didn't lose 'the love of his life' or our children didn't lose their mother. Ever since, he's distanced himself and I understand, he lost his best friend, his brother and his mentor and he never prepared himself for it because he was immortal. But as of late, I've been getting pushed away and I don't really notice being pushed away until I'm alone and not busy like right now. Obviously I've had to stay strong for the kids and they know their father is struggling immensely and I know Klaus is angry and doesn't want to take that out on the kids. The problem is we haven't talked in months...eight months.
He's never home to talk or see the kids or anyone, he's always drunk and reeks of alcohol and comes home at stupid times in the morning which wakes the kids up. Which ends up being a nightmare when I have to get up whilst he passes out for the next day and then goes on his Midnight adventures. Truth is I don't feel like he loves me anymore and it's starting to hurt more and more, since I actually have time to think.
It's currently 6 pm and I'm cooking dinner for the boys and Nathalia(our children). Tonight it was honey salmon and vegetables, although mommy's having a little more wine tonight than salmon. I was just putting my glass of red down before chopping the carrots when Klaus walked in grabbed a bottle of beer out of the fridge and threw the lid on the counter right next to the bin.
"Dick."
He stopped and turned around walking towards the counter and placing the bottle on the counter.
"What was that love ?"
I continued to chop another carrot, ignoring the warmth of his body so close to mine. Having not being touched in weeks was starting to hit me but I wouldn't let it reach.
"That's what I thought. "
Ignoring him, I continued preparing dinner.
"Your so fucking immature Y/N."
He walked out the house and slammed the door behind him.
                                                           ***
I had just started to clean up dinner as I didn't do it straight away after we ate. As I had to bath the kids and get them ready for bed before Klaus got home. No doubt he'd yell at me if they were still awake. I managed to polish off two and a half bottles of red tonight and I was finishing off the rest of the bottle whilst cleaning up. I heard the door open and my eyes shot to the clock, checking the time. 1:45 am, just on time. I was putting the last plate away when I downed my glass and put the wine away. Klaus walked up behind me and started to kiss my neck, his alcohol ridden breath hitting me but also a sweet smell.... is that perfume ?! I pushed him away and tried going upstairs. He grabbed my arm and yanked me back.
"What do you want Klaus ?"
"I want to fuck you."
"Not happening. The stench of perfume and sex already on you is making me sick."
"Oh stop judging love."
"I'm sorry, did you just tell me to stop judging ?! You cheated on me you cunt."
"It was one girl and it didn't mean anything."
"Whatever Klaus."
I decided to walk into the living room to put away the toys that weren't put away. He downed the rest of his beer he brought home with him and got another one. He sat down and drank some more. I finished cleaning and went to walk upstairs. I quickly realised that he was actually talking to me and that I had an opportunity to sort this out.
"Babe ?"
He groaned.
"What love ?"
"We need to talk."
"I don't want to talk Y/N."
"We need too. How has our relationship come to this ?"
"What do you mean Y/N?"
"I mean you don't talk to me anymore, you sleep all day, cheat on me all night and you don't even see the kids anymore."
He scoffed and walked into the kitchen to get another beer and he leant against the counter. I followed him in and placed myself in front of him.
"Klaus stop avoiding this. Talk to me !"
He started to let the alcohol take over and he started to raise his voice.
"Fuck off Y/N, I don't want to talk !"
"Why ?"
"Because I hate you ! That's why !"
"So ten minutes ago you wanted to have sex and now you hate me. Are you fucking bipolar?! Stop raising your voice as well, the kids are asleep."
"I don't give it a shit about waking the fucking kids Y/N."
"I swear to god, you wake those beautiful children upstairs and I'm kicking you out, I promise you."
"Your not kicking me out of my own house. Your the one that started this."
"Please tell me, how ?!"
"You killed my brother ! It's your fault he's fucking dead ! I can live without you but he's my fucking brother Y/N."
"Are you fucking kidding me ?! How the hell is that my fault Klaus, I didn't ask him to do that. He did it because he cares about you !"
"No he cares about you ! He didn't give a shit about me, he didn't want you to die because he loved you ! Not for me or the kids, you !"
"So that's what this is about ? You think he loved me more ?!"
"No, I know he loved you more ! But you still fucking killed my brother and I hate you for that."
"I'm not gonna stand here and listen to this ! I deserve better than this."
"Really ? So you and Elijah didn't kiss on New Years then no ? He didn't proceed to kiss you again on your birthday ? and Mine ?!"
"I NEVER kissed back Nik !"
"Don't fucking lie to me Y/N ! I fucking saw it !"
"I just told you Nik, I never kissed back. He kissed me !"
"I don't believe you. I don't believe you love me anymore. Do you ?"
"Nik..."
"Do you !"
I stood there looking at him in the eyes, I didn't want to lie to him but I didn't know how he'd react. He slammed his beer bottle on the counter and walked over to me, pinning me against the wall by my shoulders.
"Answer me !"
I closed my eyes, allowing tears to roll down my face. I flinched as his hand touched my face, his eyes softened a little but quickly went hard once again. I opened my eyes bravely and shrugged at him whilst biting my bottom lip to keep my cries in. His hard exterior fell from his face and a tear rolled down his cheek, he stumbled backwards and turned his back to me. I walked slowly over to him and placed my small hand on his shoulder without realising that it triggered his anger to surface. The next thing I knew I was pinned up again the wall by my neck and a hard punched reached my nose, breaking it. I fell to the ground and he grabbed another beer out the fridge and sat staring at me emptily, whilst chugging his beer down.
I laid on the floor clutching my nose and trying not to scream to worry the kids, I never wanted them to find out about this. So I struggled to get up and when I finally stood up so did Klaus and he yanked me back by my hair and placed his mouth near my ear.
"You tell no one about this, do you understand me ?"
I didn't reply, I was in too much pain but he yanked harder and the mass of tears flowing down my cheeks got heavier.
"Do you ?!"
"Y-Yes."
He bit into his wrist and forced it in my mouth, forcing his healing blood down my throat. My nose re-positioned and the pain vanished, almost as if it were never there. He sat me down on the sofa and he got me a glass of water once I gulped it down, he pulled me into his side. I heard him gulped and a few tears land on my head. He was crying.
"I'm sorry for everything. Pushing you away, blaming you for Elijah's sacrifice, cheating on you but most importantly for laying my hands on you. I'm meant to be your protector not the person who causes the things you need to be protected from."
I sat up and grabbed his face, before kissing him passionately. He kissed back. For once I felt as if things were actually going to get better. Klaus stopped pushing me away, he didn't lay a finger on me again or sleep with another girl. He was my husband and father of my kids again.
Little did the know their eldest son saw the whole thing.

Henry's POV
I was sleeping peacefully like usual, which meant my dad wasn't home yet thank god. I hate him so much. He treats my mom like shot and I still have to pretend like I know nothing because my mom thinks we are so oblivious to the mistreatment. Then I checked my phone 2:05 am followed with a slam downstairs. I snuck down the stairs, knowing full well I was dead meat if I was found out of bed. I got to the middle balcony of stairs and had a perfect view in the kitchen and as soon as I got there I sat down and saw dad yelling at my mom. Next thing I see is her on the floor with him a broken nose and my dad being smug about it. I went back up to my bedroom to perfect my plan.
How was I to kill my father ?

A friends with benefits arrangement with Kelly ends up being so much more. @gottaboopthesnoot fluff?
The first time you'd ended up in bed with Kelly both of you were coming off of being dumped. You walked into Molly's with the intention to just have a few drinks then head home alone. April and Ethan were headed out as you were headed in so you thanked Ethan for holding the door open for you then headed to the bar.
"Herrman my good man can I please get a whiskey on the rocks and make it a double" he let out a low whistle and started making your drink "Rough day sweetheart?" You wanted to laugh but simply shook your head "I lost two patients that came into med today then my dumbass now former boyfriend decided it was in fact too stressful to be dating a doctor who refused to transfer from emergency medicine" "Yikes. Here this will make you feel a little better" you took the glass from him with a smile and slid the money across the bar plus some for the tip jar "Thanks Herrman"
He walked away so you glanced around the room. Jay was sitting in the corner with Will, Adam and Kevin. They waved when they spotted you so headed over "Hey fellas how's it going?" Will cut his eyes at your glass "Bout as good as yours" you laughed then looked from Adam to Kevin "Bad day?" Kevin letting out a breath told you all you needed to know so you turned back towards the bar "Herrman I got the next round for this table!" He nodded "You got it sweetheart"
You patted Jay's shoulder before you walked off and said "see you boys later"
--------------------
You headed for a corner booth and spotted Kelly sitting alone. You sat next to him on a stool and bumped his hand "Well hello Severide" he smiled up at you "Hey Y/N" you noticed he was lacking a certain blonde appendage he'd acquired "Where's shit what's her name..Kristy? Brittany?" "Jessica and she dumped me by text around eleven this morning" you did laugh then and held up your phone "I got dumped at two in between losing a seventy year old to hypothermia and a sixteen year old to a ruptured appendix of all things" he tilted his head with a laugh "Ok you win"
--------------------
The two of you ended up talking for the better part of an hour. "Well I guess I'm gonna head home" you said pushing your glass away. "Want a ride?" He asked so you shrugged. He'd only had one beer and it was long gone "Sure"
You slipped your jacket back on then followed him outside and to where he'd parked his mustang. You smiled when he held the passenger door open "What a gentleman" he walked around then slid into the driver's seat. You watched him as you buckled up then he pulled out onto the road.
Kelly had always been a good looking guy. He was a little cocky at times but damn you'd bet two months salary he could back it up. You shook your head to clear the sudden rush of hormones then turned to look out the window until Kelly pulled up behind your car and parked. "Want to come in for some coffee?" You asked without even thinking and were rewarded with that gorgeous smile of his "Sure"
--------------------
One thing led to another and the morning light found the two of you tangled up in your sheets and each other. You woke up and felt his warmth at your back as memories from the previous night flooded your mind. When he woke up he let his lips trail lazily over your bare shoulder "Morning" hearing his voice so thick with sleep while feeling him pressed hard against you made you squirm slightly "Morning" you said with a smile that turned into a gasp when he bit down gently on your shoulder. "Are you wanting to continue last night?" You asked reaching back to pull him forward for a kiss "If you do" was his response.
--------------------
That had been over four months ago. The two of you weren't dating per say as much as blowing off steam or well you were pretty sure that's how it was for Kelly. You had started falling for him somewhere along the month and a half mark. How could you not? He was gorgeous, amazing in bed, one of the sweetest men you'd ever known and genuinely seemed to care about you.
You were scared that if you told him how you felt you'd more than likely not only lose him out your bed but as a friend also and you weren't really to risk it so you buried it.
--------------------
You were at work grabbing test results from Maggie when a bad wave of nausea washed over you. "You ok Y/N? You look a little green?" She asked so you forced a smile "I haven't eaten. After I sign off on Mrs. Rodriguez I'll come raid your snack drawer"
"You know where it is" she replied with a smile even if she still seemed apprehensive. You told Mrs. Rodriguez her aftercare instructions and was walking out her room when another wave of nausea hit and the next thing you knew the world went black.
---------------------
You woke up in an exam room with an iv of fluid going into your arm. Will was shining a light in your eyes "Jesus Y/N you scared all of us. I'm gonna run some bloodwork. It appears like you're just dehydrated but I want to make sure""Thanks Will" you said right before he walked out. Some doctor you were, couldn't even keep yourself healthy.
You heard a knock on the door before Maggie popped her head in with a bottle of juice in her hand "No solids until your blood work is back but this should help" you sat up a little and took the juice "Thanks Maggie. I don't know what happened. I mean I've been feeling a little off but I thought it was just all the hours I've been working"  she patted your hand reassuringly then said "Just rest. We'll figure it out"
--------------------
"Run that by me one more time Halstead" you repeated despite reading the results yourself "You're about eight weeks. That's what caused the fainting. We can make you an appointment with the OB of your choice to discuss options but for today Goodwin wants you to head home and rest. Natalie is going to cover your shift for the next couple days"
"Thanks Will" you were in a bit of a fog as you walked out and to your car. How the hell were you supposed to tell Kelly?
-------------------
You made it a few blocks before you had to pull over. You were crying hard enough your shoulders were shaking what the hell were you going to do?
A baby. You were in love with Kelly and pregnant and he was clueless to both of those things. You wanted to keep the baby but you also knew you had to tell him.
-------------------
Once you managed to get home you grabbed a pair of sweatpants and a t-shirt. You needed a hot shower to clear your mind. You'd texted Kelly that Goodwin had sent you home so he'd in return texted back saying he'd be over the next morning when he got off shift.
At least you had twelve or so hours before you had to face him. You could eat and sleep.
----------------------
No matter how you laid all you could think about was the fact that you had a baby inside of you. Yours and Kelly's baby. You finally managed to fall asleep curled up on your side.
--------------------
You were woke up around seven to a pounding at your door and your phone ringing. You picked it up to see you had seven missed calls and the person currently calling was Kelly.
You answered it but instead of saying hello you asked "Is that you at my door?" "Been here for ten minutes sweetheart. Started to kick it in. I was getting worried" you smiled despite yourself "I'll come let you in" then hung up.
Your nerves started fluttering and you cursed when a wave of nausea hit you again. The moment you unlocked the door you barely saw Kelly's face before you had to hold up one finger and rush to the bathroom.
Kelly kicked the door shut and quickly followed you. When he saw the position you were in he crouched behind you pulling your hair out the way and started rubbing small circles into your back.
------------------
Once your stomach was emptied either nerves or hormones or both hit you and you started to cry. Kelly pulled you into his arms and sat leaned against the wall gently rocking you for god knows how long before you managed to calm down "Baby what's wrong?" He asked and you almost started crying again.
"Kelly I'm sorry" he pulled back far enough to look in your face "about what?" You could tell he was so confused about everything so you took a deep breath then just decided to rip the bandaid off "I'm in love with you and I'm eight weeks pregnant"
A thousand emotions flashed across his face. Shock was the most prominent. You started to try to stand up but he pulled you back down in his lap "Hold on Y/N just let me catch up. You said you love me?" You nodded "It's ok if you don't feel the same way" he cut you off by his lips crashing into yours.
When he pulled away he smiled "I love you too. I have for a while. Now about that second thing you said?" You swallowed hard and looked into those bright blue eyes that you loved so much "Remember that close call you had? And we spent the entire night in bed?" He nodded slowly "Well I apparently got pregnant that night" you nearly whispered glancing down at your hands.
Several long silent seconds flicked by before he said "So you love me and I'm gonna be a dad. Not how I figured this would go" you looked up to meet his eyes right as he added "but I'm happy and I will be here for you and our baby every step of the way"
You started crying again but this time it was tears of relief "I love you Kelly" "I love you too Y/N" he said with a smile then ran his hand across your stomach and leaned down before saying "and we both love you"
