Redesigning Helluva Beelzebub
Tumblr media
Hoo boy, roll up the sleeves for this one.
The Original
In my review of Helluva Boss 108, I mentioned that Beelzebub's character design put me in mind of how some DeviantArt kid's fursona might look. And... Yeah I stand by that statement. The most likely reason I can figure Viv Medrano wanted her to be dog-like was to make a reference to her Die Young music video, which featured an anthro wolf singing a Kesha song (for context, Kesha herself voiced Beelzebub and co-wrote a song for this episode).
But for those who are unaware, Beelzebub's traditional depiction looks nothing like this.
Tumblr media
Really the only visual similarities the Helluva version shares with the Infernal Dictionary version are the insect wings, six limbs, and the crown thingy over the head. (At least I think that's a crown-? Kinda hard to tell on both counts.)
Bee's eyes get somewhat more insectoid later in the episode, but that feels like a cop-out. Wow, her eyes and colors changed. Totally a bug demon, right?
Tumblr media
They had the same problem in Hazbin Hotel with Katie Killjoy, who's allegedly supposed to be a praying mantis but barely resembles one, even after her transformation.
Tumblr media
I understand the desire for fresh takes on old figures, and taking creative liberties so the new interpretation doesn't feel generic. But the changes should at least make sense. By now it's pretty clear Viv couldn't care less about representing Ars Goetia demons faithfully, as demonstrated with Paimon, Andrealphus, and now Beelzebub. You could slap completely different names on these characters and it wouldn't change a thing. I posted this meme a while back but it's never been more relevant:
Tumblr media
On top of that, what reason could there possibly be for the design to be this damn complex? Why did she need so many markings on her face? Why did she need so many layers of hair? Why did she need flowing goo for her hair, tail, and body, each requiring dedicated effects animation?
When it comes to a hand-drawn production, less is more. Any superfluous details on a character just make unnecessary work for the animators.
Anyway, here's what Viv has to say about it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Alright, I'll admit: The lava lamp bit is a little clever. Basically it works as a regular stomach does, but on demonic steroids. But it wouldn't look so much like Viv's making this up as she goes if we'd seen Bee's stomach performing its intended function in the episode. Let her chow down on a giant piece of food (maybe that cotton candy she's been handing out-?) and swallow it, and let Loona (and the audience) see it dissolving in her transparent belly. As a general rule, if it's not shown or explained in the work itself, it's not canon. Like I've said before, Viv: Elaborate on the nuances in the story you're telling, not on social media.
Also, "Her ears are designed after beehives"? Wh...Wha? Ma'am have you ever seen a beehive.
Tumblr media
(Hell, even if you told me the ears were inspired by the generic cartoon beehive we're all familiar with, I wouldn't have guessed. There's a difference between being subtle and being vague.)
I can kinda see it in the overall shape, but that's a very specific design inspiration that wasn't clear at all in the design itself. Same with the "animal trainer" thing: I never would have picked up on that if Viv hadn't pointed it out. If a character design doesn't visually convey all the necessary information, it's not a successful design. Show, don't tell. There's a communication breakdown between what Viv's telling us and what Bee's design shows us.
(It's possible she actually meant "Her ears are designed after honeycombs", but even then, each compartment has a specific pentagonal shape that's not coming across at all here.)
Tumblr media
I also find it interesting that Bee and Loona have almost the exact same body type. Of course Viv's pretty infamous for samebody syndrome, but it's actually unnerving how similar these two are.
Tumblr media
Might this be a reference to Vortex's "type"? Is this foreshadowing a relationship with Loona? Am I overthinking this? Yeah, probably. Viv's demonstrated a clear preference for tall, skinny body types over the years, so it's safer to assume that's the explanation. It's all aesthetics. It ain't that deep. Occam's Razor and all that.
Finally, Bee how the hell does your shirt work.
Tumblr media
The Concept
So at this point it seems most logical to lean into the "bee" thing for the redesign, and scrap all the canine elements. As for the blobby hair and tail... yeeeah let's nix those too. We're going for a streamlined version that's easier to animate. And because I ignored the ringmaster look for my redesign of Asmodeus, it only makes sense to do the same for Bee's animal trainer vibe (what little there is) for the sake of consistency. I know this version of Hell has a circus theme with its highest-ranking demons, but there's never been an in-universe explanation for why that is.
Let's look at actual bees, then. A quick peek at Google has informed me that certain insect species have smaller, "simple" eyes (also known as ocelli), in addition to their compound eyes. In bees, this manifests as a triangular grouping of three beady eyes on top of the head.
Tumblr media
In her Helluva Boss episode, Bee's full demon form has three eyes, which could be a reference to this triangular arrangement, plus her regular form has two spots on her forehead in addition to the third eye. So it's possible Viv actually did research for something. Pleasantly surprised on that front.
Tumblr media
Next, the body. I've noticed that some folks find Bee's skinny body type refreshing, as the sin of gluttony is too often personified with fatness. And that's fair. That's valid. But consider this:
Tumblr media
Imagine any Vivziepop character saying that about a chubby person. Imagine the series sending the message that fat people can be sexy too, and that they have worth outside of their appearance, enough for at least one character to consider them girlfriend material. That they're valued and appreciated regardless of this culture's beauty standards (which we know nothing about since the worldbuilding is as thin and flimsy as tissue paper, but whatever). Imagine if this show finally had a fat female character who wasn't relegated to the background. Don't know about y'all, but that would be refreshing to me. And when you take into account all the fat-shaming of a character who isn't even fat, portraying a fat character as attractive would be a nice change of pace for this show.
Now let's talk about clothing. In the episode, Bee's clothes show off a lot of her body, with a cutout crop top and short shorts. We can take a similar approach for the redesign (something that still shows off her chest, belly, and limbs, in keeping with the extroverted "party girl" persona), but that perhaps includes more queenly elements.
The Redesign
Because this is a redesign, many elements were already in place, but I still had to figure out how this character would look as a bee. Here's where the preliminary sketches came in. Lots of trial and error in this process.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Wrestling with this character's face got a lot easier once I realized I could mold it into a pentagonal shape akin to a honeycomb compartment. It took a few tries, but at last, I had a final sketch.
Tumblr media
All that was left to do was test out some color combinations.
Tumblr media
I tried a few different approaches, but in the end, this is the version I felt worked best.
Tumblr media
I used many of the colors from the original, but pushed the orange much harder since orange is the symbolic color of gluttony as a sin. And overall it gives Bee a nice honey-ish look rather than the generic black and yellow we already see on so many bees in cartoons. I thought the colored outlines on her clothing would add a soft, feminine touch, as well.
And just for kicks, here's a quick sketch of her giant form, inspired by the Infernal Dictionary drawing of Beelzebub.
Tumblr media
Conclusion
The canon version of this character exists in the form she does for no reason than to stroke her creator's ego. "Hey guys, remember when I animated that Kesha fan video? Remember how cool that was? Wanna see me foist this unnecessarily-complex character design on other animators while I take a victory lap?" I wouldn't mind so much if Viv animated any of this herself, but she didn't. I could almost excuse this if she had no animation experience and didn't know how much work it requires, but she does. The self-aggrandizing entitlement is just off the charts. But a nonsensical design is leagues better than a stolen one, so... brownie points for that, I guess.

hi i hope you're having a good day! this may be quite silly but i'm curious, what are some typical dances for the peoples of blest?
Hi there! This was actually sent in for the Patreon Q&A in April, but something horrible has happened to Patreon's site in the last several months, where after a certain amount of text, the text editor becomes horrifically laggy and crashes constantly, meaning I did all the work (i.e. watching so many medieval and ancient dancing videos and reading all about various cultures and their dances) to answer this question, but the website stubbornly would not let me type up my answer in the existing Q&A post... 🥹 So I kept losing all my progress on this one and ultimately ended up giving up, but I still wanted to answer it, so I hope it's okay that I answer here!
The short answer: the typical dances for the people of Blest obviously are going to vary widely between cultures as well as classes within those cultures. People from the southern isles dance quite differently from people in the Eastern Continent, who in turn dance differently from people in Jalis. I'm not going to cover too much of the kinds of dancing that we don't see much of in the game, though I will note that Ket and Hunter cultures tend to favor dancing more as a form of story-telling or individual expression (often seen in plays or festival rituals where specialized dancers are playing specific roles or parts), with elaborate costumes and dance techniques being employed in each culture (some traditional Ket dancers use fans and masks, Hunter dancers often dress in swirling costumes with rattling beads and employ hand-drums), rather than the communal dancing we might envision in, like, ballrooms or barnyard line-dancing. The Elves have a mix of both, with dance as "performance" as well as dance as "socializing" utilized in equal measure, and performative dancing is seen as a high art form that deeply utilizes perfectly synchronized music, color coordination, and movement to create mesmerizing group displays, almost like synchronized swimming or Cirque de Soleil type experiences. Mage culture, in general, doesn't put a lot of emphasis on dancing, as many Mages tend to trend introverted, solitary, or unathletic, so as a society it's not viewed as a really vital skill or even a part of their larger culture outside of the usual school/festival dancing, which isn't so much taught as it is just stumbled into.
Anyway, the two primary forms of dancing we seen in the game are what the nobles do and what the commonfolk do. I imagine dancing among aristocrats (formal balls, the Trade Minister's gala, parties at the Sun Court) to be pretty similar to what you'd see in Regency-Era dancing, with waltzes, quadrilles, and cotillons being the most common style.
Tumblr media
However, it should be noted that the "English country dance" that was typical of the Regency era (where men and women form two lines, facing across from their partner, and are not permitted to dance alone as a couple, but side-by-side alongside others) is not something that is present in Blest. If you've seen any Austenian movies like P&P 2005, you know what I mean.
Tumblr media
^ So not this!
It may factor into a dance a noble has to do once or twice in their lifetime, but it's pretty unusual, and a guest without a noble background (like Riel or the Shepherds at the Trade Minister's gala) wouldn't be expected to know it.
Among the commonfolk, dancing typically takes place during festivals and holidays, in the streets or on the village green or town square, not within a formal venue such as a ball. As such, there are really no formal moves or styles ascribed to this kind of dancing--it's primarily dictated by what kind of music is playing, and you basically just jam out to it however you want, in a group, couple, or as an individual--but the closest real-world equivalents I could liken it to would be the medieval carole or free-style polka. But there are no formalized rules other than basic proprietary/decency, and even then that can be pretty lax once the drink is flowing.
youtube
However, while I don't have any formal name for it, mostly I just imagine the dance scene from A Knight's Tale. :)

Isn't it glorious?
It’s here! I finally tackled my analysis of Key’s gold Gasoline era costume, worn in his music video for the song, photoshoots, a stage performance at the Inkigayo show, and a live performance at SM Town 2022. I’ll discuss everything from the fabrics used, the gloves, the shoes, complain about the zipper, talk about whatever the heck jumps are, break down all of the tiny little types of ornamentation (including the things I don’t actually know the name for) and more.
It’s scary in the best way. Buckle up. Grab some coffee or tea or vodka and a blanket.
I want to preface this by saying that this is going to be VERY long. I’ve polled my followers and nearly everyone said they want me to get as granular as I want. So I’m doing that. If that’s not your thing, here’s your exit ramp now. I get it. This is absurd.
You can also read it on my Twitter here. It actually has a LOT of bonus photos because they only allow me to have 30 on here, if you’re interested in seeing more. It may help clarify some things, as well.
Now then. Welcome to those who are left. Let’s begin!
Tumblr media
Costumes by Dénicheur by Seo Seung Yeon
For his Gasoline era, Key has had four costumes designed and made by Dénicheur by Seo Seung Yeon, a Haute Couture Designer House that, among other things, makes elaborate costumes for Kpop performers. They’ve got an amazing Instagram portfolio to check out. They made him a gold and black costume for his G.O.A.T in the Keyland concert, the blue and white one for the Gasoline MV, this gold one, and a cream and gold beaded jacket for the 2023 SM Town Concert.
This fashion house’s trademark is intricately beaded, appliquéd…encrusted…costumes. I was able to get some high quality photos from some of you (thanks so much!) And the more I looked, the more I discovered.
If this were a piece of art (well, it is, but not in the same way) “Mixed Media” is what I’d call it. There are literally over twenty different types of beading techniques, appliqués, various types of sequins, trims, braids, rhinestones, chains, and more.
Tumblr media
First, I’ll do an overview of the garments themselves, and then I’ll move on to the ornamentation.
The top (it’s not a jacket, it’s not really a shirt, it’s not a tunic. So I’m going with “top”) has a very boxy torso with exaggerated wide, padded shoulders. They’re completely squared. There are straight sleeves—not too slim, not too bulky. There’s a heavily ornamented oversleeve that reaches down to about his elbows and a “nude” colored full length under sleeve. It also has heavily ornamented cuffs at the bottom the sleeve. It has an exposed zipper up the center back that goes up into a short turtleneck collar. The collar and a portion of the lower neck back region are sheer with some beading and appliqués. There are sheer spirals around his arms and in chevrons on his front and scooping around to his back.
Tumblr media
Just LOOK AT that masterpiece
The trousers are closely cut through the waist, hips, and thighs but become a bit wider at the knee. It looks like they were made full length but are always worn bunched up over knee high boots. They close at the center front with a very beautifully set fly zipper and flat trouser hook and bar. It’s so low profile that it wasn’t until I got some 4K images that I was even sure of where they closed. It was like he had been sewn in. I wrote a whole thread about it on Twitter that reads like a mystery novel, though I already spoiled the ending for you. Sorry.
Tumblr media
The top is made of what is probably a “nude” (aka specially dyed to his skin tone) base fabric to hold the structure, with the ornamentation stitched over top. The external stabilizing fabric is what appears to be some sort of jacquard, possibly silk.
Jacquard is a type of weave, where the fabric is made of long and short “up and down” stitches of sorts, to make a pattern. Because some of the time it uses longer “stitches” on top, it becomes more vulnerable to the fiber breaking and makes it become kind of “fuzzy” looking. This can be especially true if it’s a natural fiber that usually has less structural integrity than a synthetic one. I initially thought this had started to happen on Key’s rear, but after a very close zoom in, I think that’s just a bit of appliqué edge pulling up. I think maybe one of his mic packs is down there too, but I’m really not an expert in that. I did the research so you don’t have to, folks.
Tumblr media
Left: A type of jacquard fabric. The shine comes from the longer top threads, contrasting with details of shorter threads. Right: Is it an applique or is it some snagged fibers? Ultimately, I think it's an applique edge.
Perhaps the most interestingly nerdy thing about jacquard is that it was originally made on a loom that led to the creation of computer programming by utilizing a sort of “binary code.” There were punchcards that showed the strands of fibers when to go up and down. Like “holes and not holes” in which to weave.
Tumblr media
A Jacquard Machine Loom with punchcards that create the desired design on the fabric
It’s important to note that this fabric needs to have some stretch because it is also used to make his very tight fitting trousers. If it were not a stretch fabric, he wouldn’t be able to do this like THIS or…most things, really.
Tumblr media
Even though the jacquard is stretchy, it has some structure to it. It’s used as a stabilizer in between the “flesh mesh” on the outer layer. (aka power net, stretch mesh... There are many names!) It forms the base on which the majority of the ornamentation is stitched.
Flesh mesh is a stretchy mesh fabric dyed to the performer’s skin color and is used to give the illusion that you’re seeing their skin, but it gives much more strength than just a cutout. I wrote a thread about flesh mesh and the importance of taking into consideration the performer’s actual skin tone when building them a costume here
In this case, flesh mesh allows for adornment of these areas, as well. It’s important to note that, even though it’s a separate layer over the base, it is “tacked” through all layers in a regular fashion so it doesn’t droop with the weight of all of the ornamentation.
There are also some parts that have metallic gold applied pieces. This was probably made of a beefy metallic spandex applied on top of the base rather than some solid pleather, due to way it behaves on the body. The latter would have been way too rigid in comparison to the rest of the fabrics.
Tumblr media
Heavy gold stretch spandex, forming a chevron on which to affix beads and other trims
Okay. Range of movement time. You know how I love discussing this. That’s because it’s the single most important aspect of costumes for dancers.
Let’s talk armpit gussets. They’re an American football shaped piece of fabric that is stitched in the armpit partially to the sleeve underarm, and partially to the torso underarm. It’s often made of a stretch fabric, but sometimes it’s out of the original “fashion fabric,” which is what we call the main garment fabric.
Tumblr media
Gussets out of different fabrics under each underarm. You can see the gold bunch under his arm when it's at his side
It allows the performer to more easily move their arms above their chest and head to help keep the top from riding up. You can see in this photo, though, that it does bunch up a little when his arm is down, because of the extra fabric. It has to go somewhere when it’s not taut.
With this particular top, it’s interesting to note that, due to the asymmetrical decoration of his arms, one gusset is the gold stretch fabric and the other is the jacquard. That means that, either both fabrics have the exact same stretch, or his arms may be SLIGHTLY more limited on one side than the other. That’s fun! I really geeked out about this observation.
Often with jackets for dancers, they’ll have what are called “commodity pleats” around the center back shoulder area. They’re a sort of sneaky hidden accordion-like bit of fabric that stretches out during movement that may otherwise split the back open. Taemin uses them a LOT. But, since this top is so boxy, Key doesn’t need them in this instance. He already had the room he needed without any other accommodations.
Tumblr media
They put commodity pleats in the back of most of Taemin's closer fitting jackets. I wish they'd make them the same color as his jackets, though!
With Key’s trousers, we’ve already established that they’re made of a fabric with a decent amount of stretch. But since I can’t find many good photos of his bottom half, I’m unsure about if he also has “crotch gussets.”
By this point, I’m kind of notorious as being the “crotch gusset person.”
The following posts explain them in much more detail, but basically, they’re long triangular wedges that start in the trouser crotch and taper down to nothing in the inseam. These are often put in trousers of dancers when people need a better range of movement.
I wrote about this in detail regarding Taemin’s pleather pants he wore in his Metamorph concert, as well as all of SHINee in the Your Number dance video. You can find my posts on the subject here:(Metamorph) (Your Number)
Tumblr media
Jinki rocking a black crotch gusset in SHINee's "Your Number" Performance Video (Black Version)
Gussets allow for extra room and movement when one is trying to do extreme leg movements like squatting. Unfortunately, I don’t have many good photos of his inseam. There’s so much going on with appliqués and piecing of mesh vs jacquard, it’s hard to tell. Part of the front half of his trousers is flesh mesh, swirling around them. The other parts are the jacquard, whereas the back is all jacquard.
I saw one photo which made me begin to wonder if the inseam is a little further forward than it could be, though. That could mean there IS a gusset. I’m really not sure...I don't have official visual confirmation, but now you know more about crotch gussets either way. You’re welcome.
Tumblr media
That seam line is up a bit more forward than usual. It really has me wondering, because that would happen if there was a gusset installed. Hmmmm.
Okay. Zipper education time. I apologize in advance. Things get spicy but I tried to tamp it down. The center back (abbreviated as “CB” in the industry) of the top has an exposed zipper. This means exactly what it sounds like: it’s exposed. You look at it, and it looks like there’s a zipper right there. It’s not hidden. Sometimes it’s a perfect match, and sometimes it’s “featured.” Exposed zippers actually become a trend every once in a while in everyday fashion.
I thought it was extremely interesting that, on this elaborate costume, they chose to use a zipper with metallic teeth on white “tape.” (The fabric on the sides of the teeth.) It was a huge disappointment for me, actually. I would have loved to have seen the zipper more carefully hidden like his fly was.
Tumblr media
Hello, zipper. I see you loud and clear!
I have to comment a bit on what I view as the one flaw in this otherwise perfect costume. I will preface this by saying that I was not in the fitting room where this was conceived, and I don’t know about any extenuating circumstances and the reasoning behind this decision. But there a few things that I would have done differently regarding the zipper and back collar of this top if were to have made it.
But first: some zipper education. Besides exposed, there are center lapped, as well as regular lapped zippers. With the center lap, it’s like the fabric covers your zipper but you can pull the zipper down through it. Your hoodie probably has one. The regular lap zipper is more like your trouser fly in that there is one flap of fabric that covers the whole zipper, hiding it.
Tumblr media
Top: Exposed. (Though it has a matching zipper and zipper tape.) Bottom Left: Center Lapped. Right: Regular Lapped.
Either of those types could have been used to make the zipper more discreet. I personally would have chosen to use a regular lapped zipper, which is less likely to get snagged than a center lapped zipper.
People have defended the exposed zipper by asking if it’s because it’s less likely to get caught. I very much get this argument, and, technically it’s right.
But, in my extensive experience, I don’t think I can recall a case of an exposed zipper in the back of a costume, quick change or no. It’s unattractive. (Not to mention a dead giveaway in a period garment!)
If it’s sewn well and tested, with the correct size lap and no loose fabric, it will work just fine. There should be a hook and eye at the top to make sure that it stays secure while dancing.
Part of being a good dresser is being methodical and purposeful, not frantically zipping something up in a way that is more prone to snagging. They keep their cool, perhaps taking a couple more seconds but ensuring that they pull it up smoothly. They use their fingers to block the overlap as they guide the zipper up.
(Random side note: I met a dresser once who preferred zippers be installed upside down for their quick changes. Hey, whatever works best for them! I wonder how they discovered that…)
I will also note that, as far as I’m aware, the only times he’s worn this costume, he didn’t need to get in or out of it quickly. I know that he wore it in the MV, the Inkigayo performance, and the photoshoot. He also performed at SM Town Tokyo 2022, though he had 11 songs during which to change between Bad Love and this. He never wore this look at his G.O.A.T. in the Keyland concert. Oh, and the collab with the Jinro frog. I’ll talk about that later.
So ultimately, all of the zipper quick change talk is for nothing. There COULD have been a chance that this was going to be worn during his concert, I suppose. But if not, in the end, I can find no reason that there needed to be an exposed zipper other than: they wanted it that way.
Sorry for that rant. I know that it was intense. I just…wish it were pretty. That’s all. I know it wouldn’t have bothered most people, but I personally think that the costume deserved better!
Well then. They arranged the symmetrical beaded appliqué motifs so they didn’t interfere with the center back line, so it wasn’t an issue being all chonky around the zipper.
Unfortunately, since the zipper was built into the neck with just the “stretch mesh,” it moves very differently than the rest of the top. It has a substantially weaker structural makeup and it can’t support itself the same, so it stretched at a different rate than the zipper on the solid fabric on the bottom. It kind of “bubbled” when he moved and it rode up.
Tumblr media
Showing the neck bubbling, and, on the bottom left photo, you can see that there is some sheer stabilizer to ensure that the zipper doesn't just tear out of the sheer net.
It couldn’t have been helped unless that whole back neck area had been backed with the solid nude base fabric. That’s what I would have done, personally. But using the stabilizer helped a bit. Without it, it may have not lasted a performance.
I don’t know why they did it that way, but the result was rather disappointing to me, especially considering the care that was taken with the rest of the garment.
Okay. End rant. The rest of the costume is EXQUISITE.
One more thing to note is that the zipper terminates about 4” above the top’s bottom hem. It is right around where his waist is. It was built that way to ensure that he was able to move his legs and hips comfortably without getting hung up anywhere.
His knee high boots were covered with the same peach jacquard as his top, as well as utilizing the gold fabric to serve as ornamental buckled straps.
Tumblr media
The stretch element of the jacquard is further showcased by the fact that it pulls over the boot toe smoothly, with little issue. A completely stable fabric wouldn’t be able to do that.
Now for the ornamentation. Oooooh boy. There are around twenty types of various adornments on this costume, and I thought I’d highlight some of them.
Tumblr media
I can spy about 15 different types of ornamentation here alone.
Beaded appliques at the neckline
Heavy chains
Rhinestone appliques and/or individual rhinestone pieces
Bugle bead chevrons
Gold round beads
Yellow individual small rhinestones
Grey beads in between bugle beads
Gold and silver flat braid trim
Gold stretch fabric
Round flat decorative chain
Hanging paillettes
Dark seed beads with some of the paillettes
Gold dangling lil dudes
A sequined applique peeking out from behind a chain
Utilizing the main fabric as a chevon stabilizer as a design detail
About paillettes: these might actually be my favorites. They’re like “floppy sequins” that only have one hole at an edge. They’re made of a very lightweight plastic, so they’re virtually silent. If you wear a dress completely covered in paillettes, you’ll just hear a little rustle. In this case, his were mainly attached via dangly wires as fringe around the upper sleeves. There are a few other random instances throughout the garment where they’re stitched on individually. You can read more about paillettes in my post here.
Appliqués: There are at least three different types of appliqués in this costume:
Beaded
Lace
Sequined
Rhinestone
Appliqués are premade decorative pieces. It looks like someone hand beaded everything on the costume, but they were able to take a shortcut by using these. So no, contrary to what you might believe, there wasn't someone laboriously hand beading every single thing on to this costume.
It still takes FOREVER to invisibly stitch each motif on to the costume as well as, in this case, sometimes layer upon layer. A lot of them are attached to a net base, and in closeups, I saw how they trimmed the net away closely around the motifs.
Tumblr media
On the top, we have the gold paisley sequined appliques. On his trousers, you can see the low profile lurex embroidered lace appliques. Bottom left, you can see the beaded and rhinestone applique. And on the right, beaded appliques. You can see that they're over flesh mesh so, when it's on Key, it just looks like he has a beaded collar.
The sequined, beaded paisley motifs are the most prominent and plentiful form of appliqués, focusing around the top’s cuffs and lower edge. They’re also heavily featured spiraling around the trousers. There are even some appliqués stitched across the seams of the trousers and top.
There are some huge, gorgeous bead and rhinestone appliqués, like this one on his right bicep that you can see in the photo above.
There’s also the Lurex lace (metallic threaded) embroidered appliqués that concentrate mostly on his trousers' waist and hips. It’s low profile without any bits that might snag the top while moving. They added a few jewels to it further down once it was no longer posing any danger to snags. There are also a few flat appliqués on his rear, so as to not make sitting uncomfortable but still be adorned.
Beads and gemstones: There are also individual beads and jewels both sewn and what appears to be discreetly glued on as accents. A popular adhesive we use for that sort of application is called E6000. It bonds pretty much everything from plastic, leather, metal, rubber, and wood. It’s like a slower acting super glue, but is more flexible.
You definitely need to use this in a ventilated area or, ideally, with a respirator. The fumes are no joke! There are little chevrons made out of long tubular metallic bugle beads that were probably glued instead of stitched on. There are also round bronze beads and gold rhinestones glued to the edges of the metallic fabric.
There are little dangling gold dudes, though I don’t know what they’re officially called. There are individual sew on rhinestones. There are circular decorative flat chains. There is gold beaded fringe at the wrists of the sleeves.
Tumblr media
Top left: gold braid, beads and chains are heavily featured. Top right: the dangling gold dudes. I don't know what to call them. Bottom left: Paillettes, hanging on gold wires on the upper sleeve hem. Bottom right: Gemstones highlighting the center of the chest, with a whole organized, beautiful mess of braid, beads, etc.
There’s gold flat “braid” trim that also looks like it has a bit of silver in it to add dimension. It’s basically like a braided ribbon, often in metallic colors. It’s used a lot in military uniforms.
And there are a few other various random beads and trims that show up amongst the circus of adornment.
The layout of the overall design is asymmetrical, with left and right arms and legs that don’t match. However, the front of the top is completely symmetrical (which is extremely impressive) except for a few rampant rhinestones that intentionally deviate a bit. Here’s an abomination I made of the sleeves next to each other to see the asymmetry more clearly.
Tumblr media
I THINK (not based on this photo but others that aren't Frankensteined together with different perspectives) that the sleeves are actually different lengths as well.
Something that I should cover is that with garments made out of a stretch fabric, like Key’s trousers in this case, stitching on something non-stretchy (like some appliqués) can be fraught. The appliqué can keep the fabric from stretching as much as it needs to accommodate a body in it, and it might tear off.
Sometimes, we need to stretch the fabric a bit as we sew on the motif so it will look normal when a leg is in it. It may look a bit puckered when it’s not being worn. The good news is that it appears that most of the motifs in this costume are on what is most likely a mesh backing, so they probably didn’t have to deal with that headache here!
Since the motif on the Jacquard fabric is pretty small, as well as the fact that some of the appliqués wrapped across the side seams, “pattern matching” wasn’t a big priority on this. However, it’s always preferable to keep the motifs at the same horizontal height. This is a REALLY small pattern, so it wouldn't matter terribly, plus the fact that it was so covered it can hardly be seen. There WAS a point on the right side seam where the pattern did match, but the fabric slightly torqued on the left so it didn’t. All in all, it wasn’t a big deal whatsoever. If it were a bigger print though, it could have been. I made a thread about pattern matching here. It's a subject I'm pretty passionate about!
Tumblr media
This side seam was cut so that, at a fixed point, the motif was all at the same level horizonatally at there was a part where the motif perfectly matched up to create one complete one. Because there are curves in the seam, it can't do that everywhere.
Now for a bit of a departure: SHINee and its members have done a few collabs over the years, dancing with the frog mascot from Jinro soju. SHINee did one for Don’t Call Me, Taemin did one for Move, and Key did one for Gasoline.
They dressed the frog up like Key, complete with jewels and chains! It was precious. SO GOOD. Watch it now. I also bring this up because that video was the resource I used to figure out where the gold chains on Key’s top were “tacked” (AKA stitched to keep it held down strategically.) It was a nice close-up view. Thanks, Jinro frog!
(Side note: I have made mascots before and it's ironic because they freak me out. I also refurbished a hot dog mascot that had gotten too gross after public appearances over a decade. My life is weird.)
Tumblr media
I love how scaled-back but accurate the frog's costume was.
Through the magic of the Jinro frog, I found the answer to the question “where were the chains tacked?” Here. Enough that they still have independent swing and look natural, but frequent enough to keep them from smacking him in the face. Based on the way they move, I think that is metallic coated plastic and not actual metal. Also, for safety's/comfortability's sake! You don't want to be thumped in the chest with every move.
Tumblr media
Here's where the chains were tacked
Someone asked me how much they thought this costume weighed. My answer?
I really have no idea…but probably not NEARLY as much as it looks? I'm like 99.9% sure the chains aren't actual metal. I’m not sure if the “jewels” are glass or plastic. The tiiiiiny “seed beads” and "bugle beads" are glass, but there aren’t enough that they would weigh a significant amount. There's a lot of gold braid on there that's very lightweight. A lot of what you see are layered appliqués with sequins and seed beads, which weigh nearly nothing. The dangling paillettes are just a light plastic.
For the garments themselves, as we’ve established, the are a few layers of fabric and mesh, which aren’t very heavy. Because of the “encrusted” nature of the ornamentation, of course, it still weighs a bit more than just a regular top, and is probably kind of rigid on the front. However, it’s not like he’s dancing around in chainmail.
Lastly, there are his gloves. His left one is made out of that heavy gold stretch fabric that was incorporated into the rest of his costume, and his right was also made out of a flesh mesh. From the way it behaves in this photo, it appears to be a much heavier mesh than the top and trousers.
Tumblr media
The right glove has thicker mesh that almost appears to have a natural fiber content that is getting snagged. It doesn't completely conform to the skin like a tight flesh mesh would.
The gloves are heavily ornamented with appliqués and beads. I’m going to guess that these were actually custom made for him, which is a big deal. I know very little about glove making, except it involves a TON of pieces to be done right. Gussets in between the fingers to make them slim and elegant and such. No Mickey Mouse hands here.
Stitching the ornamentation on to gloves is pretty difficult work. You either need a hand form and a curved needle or a very brave stitcher who uses their own hand as a form (palm up.) I haven’t done that for gloves, specifically, but I have been a “sacrificial hand” for other situations. I’m so calloused in most places, I don’t really feel much anymore!
There’s one more aspect to this costume that was seen in the intro for his Gasoline Inkigayo performance: the cloak. He didn’t wear it for very long, but it appears to button across his chest to the other shoulder with snaps underneath. The snaps keep the underlap from peeking out from…under the lap.
It looks like they might have had a wardrobe emergency here, because you can see that two of the three snaps were hastily stitched on with red thread. The ornamentation is asymmetrical, mostly focused on his right side. On his left shoulder, there is a decorative beaded “epaulette.” Those are the ornamental shoulder pieces you often see on military dress uniforms.
Tumblr media
Left: The full cloak. You can see the facing on the inside edges, made of the same fabric as the outside. I'll write about that in a bit, and I'll show you a closer view later. Top right: The red thread holding on the upper snaps. Bottom right: Metallic epaulette.
It’s hooded and made out of the same jacquard fabric as the rest of his costume, and it has a satin lining the same color as the “fashion fabric.” It appears to be about calf length. One of the photos I found actually has a shot that shows the facing, the lining, and how the hem is done. Of course, I nerded out. It’s “self faced,” which means that there’s the same fabric that’s on the outside making up the “facing.” The facing is the first ten inches or so of the inside edge of the cloak. It makes a pretty transition from the outside to the inside, without a harsh switch to lining.
Then, there’s the hem.
While attached at the top, the hem of the lining and the outer fashion fabrics are allowed to “hang out” separately while on a dress form. Because fabrics stretch out at different rates (and it also changes by the direction they’re cut from the fabric, but that’s a whole different lesson…) it’s ideal for something like this to hang on a dress form and do its thing for a day or so.
In an ideal world, you’d have a fitting with your performer and you would mark a “level line” on them while they’re wearing the cloak (and also the shoes they will be wearing. Different shoes can change a lot!)
There are several different ways you can mark a hem. You can safety pin it up the way you want it, using a ruler measuring up from the floor to keep it even. But this can be awkward and clunky.
Or you can safety pin a “level line” and say that it’s, for instance, 18” off the ground, and you’d like the hem to be 16” off the ground. You’d draw a new hemline 2” down from the pins. It's the easiest way to know what's level and then decide exactly what you want to do later.
OR you can use what I call “the poofer” which is a little measuring stick on a tripod with chalk and a rubber squeezy ball that poofs chalk into a line at a set height, instead of dealing with pins. But sometimes the chalk doesn’t like to brush away, so that’s a bit of a risk in exchange for convenience.
First, let’s talk about hemming the outside cloak fabric. Because it may have stretched out unevenly, you may have wildly different hems lengths now that they’ve been “leveled.” Let’s say we’ll leave 6” of “hem allowance” to fold up into the garment so it can be lengthened later if we need to. You’ll trim the rest of it away. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve altered hem lengths on cloaks over the years! I'm always grateful to have extra.
You may want to finish the hem with a “serger” or “overlock” machine, which is the sewing machine that uses 3-4 threads to sew things, often stretch, together and kind of seals off the edges. It’s probably what stitches together the side seams of your t-shirt or hoodie or lounge pants or basically anything stretchy. It’s used to keep hems and the edges of fabrics inside garments from fraying. Sometimes people don’t do it, especially since it's inside, but it’s nice if you’re planning on altering it or if the fabric is really prone to fraying.
The cloak fabric is then thoroughly pinned and hand stitched up. There are many different sneaky stitches which grab a few threads at a time from the front of the fabric and are virtually invisible. Everyone has their favorites. My personal favorite is the “vertical hemming stitch” or “vertical blind hem.” I like it because it holds the inner hem and the outside of the cloak more tightly together than a lot of other styles. The “cross stitch” which is called the “blind catch stitch” here in this diagram is one of the most popular methods. However, I feel it can be a bit too loose some times and is more likely to be caught on something. The one downside of the vertical blind hem is that, if you pull it too tight, it’s more likely to show from the outside. It takes a very sensitive hand to get it right. The lining is usually slip-stitched to the cloak hem.
Tumblr media
Once you’ve got your level line of your fashion fabric, it goes back on the dress form. I’m…not entirely sure I’ll do a good job explaining this because I work best with showing things with points and grunts. My apologies.
You mark the lining to match the level where the hem of the fashion fabric ends. You decide how far up from the bottom of the hem you want the lining to end (in this case, 4”.) So normally, you think you'd fold it up 4", right? Ha! You subtract two inches from that number. This means you’ll be folding up only two inches of lining. But, since we will be stitching it 4” up from the hem, that means there’s a floppy extra two inches. (Cue Advice.) What’s that for? Now I have to tell you about “jumps.”
Jumps are a sneaky trick. This method is used in suit coat hems and sleeve linings as well. Basically, they’re a way to give a little bit of wiggle room with the length of the lining to hem interaction.
After the fashion fabric is hemmed, you hand stitch the lining 4” up from the hem. You have two extra inches of lining. One extra inch of lining is pressed down so there’s an extra inch of “underlap". This photo (top right) showed me that they had done this to Key’s cloak. You can see it stretched out with the pressed line on the left, and it is folded over on the right.
Tumblr media
Left: The "self fabric facing" at the center front inside of the cloak. Top right: The cloak hem showing the underside of the "jump" (left) and it down in its "resting" position (right). Bottom right: the "poofer." They're marking a level line.
If you want to get even MORE granular, that is considered a “soft press”, which means that the iron steams and very lightly rests on the fabric. A “hard press” is what it sounds like. Squish that lil dude and steam the heck out of it. That line is never gonna come out.
Okay. Enough of that. I can’t believe myself.
I could literally discuss this costume inch by inch, but I think I’ve covered it enough that you can peruse it yourself if you’d like and kind of know what you’re looking at.
I deeply admire and respect the, perhaps, 100+ hours of craftspersonship that it took to make this stunning costume. Don’t even ask me what it cost to make!
Do check out the Instagram of @denicheur.official where you can see other costumes they’ve worked on for groups like IVE, Enhypen, Stray Kids and more. They’ve got an amazing portfolio to drool over.
I hope you’ve gained an even greater appreciation for this gorgeous look, and the knowledge you’ve gained here can go forward with you as you enjoy future costumes! And thanks so much for sticking with me. I hope it was worth it!

Goth wardrobe advice
hiiiii baby bats!!!! I just wanted to write a lil post on how to start building a goth wardrobe! I started around 6 months ago and I’ve been very happy with the looks I’ve been able to create, and I thought to just write down how I was able to rlly curate my aesthetic! (though I will tack onto this post that goth is a music based subculture so you can be goth without fancy elaborate looks)
when it comes to shopping for clothes, my personal advice is buy individual pieces, not outfits. meaning you buy clothes with the intention of mixing and matching which will save money and help you from over-buying. plus flexibility in your wardrobe allows for more fun and creativity!
the look
The first step to creating your style is to envision what kind of look you want to go for. goth style pulls from so many different sources! Trad goths from the 80s evolved from punk, and subsequent iterations of the style have Victorian, glam, etc sentiments. you can lean more romantic or more edgy, it’s up to you! the first step is to create a vision board. I love Pinterest personally. from there I typed “trad goth” “casual goth” “90s goth” and streamlined what I want to emulate. Don’t forget to watch goth rock music videos for style inspo- siouxsie is my personal icon and wore such interesting things, as well as Patricia Morrison! there’s also a level of gender nonconformity in goth that you can lean into. for instance, I’m femme but with a shaved head that really compliments my style and makes me feel really confident. It’s all so variable and individual. one of the original tenets of goth was the DIY aspect, which I think is super important. don’t be afraid to rip, cut, add safety pins, or paint on clothes you buy.
shopping
shopping for goth clothes has a lot of misconceptions. you really don’t need to ever buy from a fast fashion site like killstar or dollskill to get the looks you want. In fact most goths would prefer that you look elsewhere at first, bc a lot of us aren’t comfortable with the way our subculture has been commodified and commercialized. thrift stores have given me tons of luck. I typically prefer red white and blue, but goodwill can have good stuff too! (now, thrifting is more environmentally friendly, but that doesn’t mean that the company is ethical, like Salvation Army and goodwill. it’s a matter of choosing what’s right for your personal values.)
you can buy black clothes at pretty much any store which makes creating outfits somewhat easy. shop where you can afford it and what has good options for your body type and comfort level. I buy most of my stuff secondhand but I own a few things from H&M and Pacsun. pacsun has amazing corset tops that are affordable during their sales, and H&M has foundational pieces for okay quality. Try Depop too because I LOVE vintage clothes and you can find amazing things on the app, like dresses from the 90s and 70s blouses!
General wardrobe items
here’s what I bought when building my wardrobe:
- black trousers
- black skirts (midi AND mini. I prefer long skirts but I like to have choices)
- band tees for my fav goth bands
- a white button down blouse
- bustiers/corsets. I have incredible luck thrifting them but some I’ve gotten new. They’re sexy and fun on their own but even cooler layered over something!
- tights! fishnets are a must as well as solid sheer black and other fun patterns
- dresses in plaid or solid colors. you don’t have to JUST wear black, in fact siouxsie wore tons of color back in the day. black is just what we’re known for but maroon, purple and white are great too.
- long sleeve sheer tops. I have one black mesh and one black lace top. These can be worn over bras for an edgier look or under band tees to add texture and complexity.
- SHOES! I don’t buy secondhand shoes only bc I have wonky feet. My two main pairs are my doc martens Jadon platforms and Mary janes. Shoes are an entirely personal decision so do your research! A lot of ppl like Demonias but I haven’t swung for those yet.
- accessories, accessories, accessories. Perhaps what makes someone recognizably goth is our funky accessories. I have multiple belts, ranging from the standard black with grommets to a triple belt and a corset waist cincher. I buy my jewelry off Etsy or I buy them from flea markets, and I lean towards ankhs bc I’m a sandman nerd lmfao. (I own 3 ankh necklaces, a bracelet, and two pairs of earrings oops). I also have a few silver crucifixes and a spiked collar.
- outerwear. I’m a leather jacket aficionado and I hand painted a trad goth jacket, but other options are black long coats and blazers. vests are pretty great too.
final notes
I’m a baby bat myself so I, too am learning the ropes and exploring my style. remember that it’s about self expression and making yourself stand out, not uniformity. there are so many unique alternative subcultures and no one is stopping you from pulling from all sorts of inspo! Remember to have fun when shopping or getting dressed above all else!!!!
other great resources can be found on r/gothfashion and from goth YouTubers!

ryan erzahler head canons!! (and maybe some rylan?🗣️🗣️)
Hey anon thanks for the ask! I’m just gonna do the Ryan headcanons in this post and make a separate post right after this one for Rylan because it would be way too long of a post for me to include both here LOL. I hope you enjoy!
Ryan Erzahler headcanons
This sounds really basic but I think Ryan’s favorite food would be pizza. He especially loves a good surpreme pizza.
For a sweet treat, Ryan really loves warm chocolate chip cookies! He especially loves making them with Sarah every Friday night :)
Ryan is really into horror movies, especially classic horror. His favorite movies are Texas chainsaw massacre, the original halloween, hellraiser, alien and the Friday the 13th series.
Ryan’s favorite time of year is fall and he loves Halloween! While Ryan isn’t typically into parties, he goes to at least one Halloween party every year and shows up in the most elaborate costume out of everyone. On Halloween night, he doesn’t go to any parties because he takes Sarah trick or treating. He also likes to help Sarah make a Halloween costume.
Ryan also loves a nice rainy day. He likes to cozy up with a good book, music and a lit candle.
He loves warm, spicy scents like patchouli and cinnamon.
Ryan also loves earthy scents, like pine, sandalwood and the smell of rain.
Ryan loves survival horror video games. Some of his favorites series are dead space, silent hill, resident evil, and the evil within.
Ryan owns a pair of Tripp Nyc pants and they’re his favorite pants ever.
In general, Ryan’s fashion style is reminiscent of late 90s/early 2000s mall goth. He likes to shop at hot topic but he also loves thrifting and altering clothes.
He paints his nails black from time to time.
Ryan and Abi have been close friends since childhood and first met each other at camp.
Ryan plays bass guitar in his free time.
Ryan had a childhood crush on Zak Bagans from ghost adventures
Ryan has a septum and eyebrow piercing, along with multiple ear piercings.
Surprisingly, Ryan does not have any tattoos. However, he would love to get a large one on his back someday.
His favorite colors are dark purple, grey and black.
He likes to wear black eyeliner and mascara on some occasions.
His favorite music genres are nu metal and 2000s rock. Some of his favorite bands are Deftones, Korn, Slipknot, linkin park, System of a Down, creed, three days grace, evanescence, kittie, tool and static-x. Also likes some smaller alternative bands like title fight and quannic.
Post game, Ryan becomes highly claustrophobic (due to when he had to hide from Bobby when being chased by him) and he gets panic attacks and nausea from being in tight spaces.
Ryan also hates anyone other than Dylan touching his sides. It reminds him too much of when he was stabbed by Bobby.
While I think all of the counselors would suffer from depression, anxiety and PTSD post-game, Ryan would especially get hit with the worst depression. Growing up, Ryan’s father was not in his life and while he loves his grandparents his grandfather couldn’t be much of a father figure to him. Him and Chris had a father-son-like bond. Shooting him was as painful for him as losing a parent.
Post game, Ryan decides to go to school in Boston, Massachusetts for animation.
As an adult, I feel like he would become a television show animator for adult swim or Comedy Central and would create an adult cartoon series.

Era V Ghoul Headcanons (Sunshine, Phantom, Aurora)
I realized I did some minimum headcanons for Sunshine back when she first came to the band, and I wanted to elaborate on it! So here is what I’m currently working with in my universe! :)
Sunshine:
~Sunshine is still figuring out human ideas of gender (which is a vastly limited version compared to ghouls). Right now they are happy using she/they pronouns equally!
~They were summoned by Copia and are very close to him! Sunshine was the first ghoul Copia summoned after becoming Papa. They see him as their pack leader and respect him greatly. In fact, they are so loyal they tend to act like his defacto body guard. It was very difficult for Sunshine to stay back with Imperator for this tour.
~She is a mixed elemental ghoul, not just air! Her powers manifest equally from her air and fire roots as LIGHT. Sunshine gets her name from being able to make light that is both bright and can burn almost anything.
~The newest summoned ghoul for the pack! Sunshine is not the youngest ghoul in the clergy, but they are the newest to earth and human culture. Sunshine has been having fun exploring the way humans work and all the gadgets they make. Right now they love video games, microwaves, and any musical equipment. Sunshine is very curious and has been known to eagerly watch Siblings work for chores that involve human appliances.
~BOUNDLESS energy! Sunshine rarely sleeps and doesn’t really need to! Typically keeps herself occupied during tours when everyone is asleep with video games. At the Ministry she’ll wander around doing who knows what or checking up on Copia when he’s up all night working.
Aurora:
~Many think she is only an air ghoulette, but she’s actually a mixed elemental! But her powers mostly manifest as Air. She has a quintessence parent and it has made some of her features reflecting of that. Aurora has a very rare hair color for ghouls from this aether lineage, which is almost a blueish purple that nearly looks white.
~She gets her clergy nick name from the fact her aura and powers can manifest with colored light! Her aether blood let’s her read energy or manifest the visible auras of herself and others. IT’s a beautiful light show when she likes!
~Aurora was once a favorite ghoul of a past Papa who wrote opera. The two were very close up until his Death. She often performed most of his unknown works, due to her singing ability. Aurora can actually manipulate her singing voice to be any range (a common feature of her tribe due to needing to be heard over the volatile weather they lived in.) Her favorite range is Soprano, but she’s been enjoying her current range for the Ghost project. Aurora has shattered glass with her voice for fun before.
~Very regal and carries herself like royalty. She has a natural grace and exuberance that captures an entire room’s attention. Some ghouls have whispered she could rival Lilith herself!
~Proudly comes from an “artic” region of Hell, thought to be closer to Lucifer’s dwelling. She has lived through the coldest and most brutal territory. Very fitting her powers and name reflect this type of setting!
Phantom (Chaos):
~His original nickname was Chaos when he was first summoned. But during recent decades the siblings of sin have started calling him “Phantom”. He has gleefully accepted this new nickname and desperately tries to keep it for the new fans!
~The Quintessence element is notoriously misunderstood and simplified for many humans. Often thought of as dark matter, that which fills empty space, or the force of light and gravity. But as ghouls know it, it’s the element of very being and the universe! So it covers so many types of powers and abilities it’s very hard to catalogue. Phantom is a wonderful example of this! His powers manifest from being able to control shadows and parts of space around him... but the nickname Phantom comes from something more. His quintessence has let him connect to the afterlife and other supernatural phenomena. If the ghoul wanted to, he can alter any given space to make it more accessible for restless spirits to manifest. The clergy have kept him away from MANY Papal resting places... but that rarely stops him.
~Worked for Mr. Saltarian and the ghoul Miasma for a while before he was brought back to the ministry. Refuses to elaborate on what his duties were. But Phantom likes to make stories up to scare the humans around him.
~Speaking of, very mischievous. He likes to scare people and use his powers to get humans riled up. A favorite is for him to pretend to be a poltergeist or convince the siblings something is haunted. Very fond of sneaking up on others or popping out of shadows!
~Rumored to be a younger brother to Aether, but they actually just hail from the same tribe in Hell! They are very close! Aether was the one to recommend Phantom as his replacement while Aether went back to the clergy to finish his training with Omega.

If you don't mind, could you give us a tutorial or brief explanation on how you render hair? /nf
YES!! unfortunately i got. very tired after making this so this is only one hair type :( was gonna go into all the different types of hair textures but. i will just have to do that later. also keep in mind i drew this in like. 7 minutes its just a simple guide to get out the basic steps
^i didn't put music in this so. listen to whatever u want while ur watching this (its 6 minutes 40 seconds). also its slightly sped up this isn't real speed
elaboration of each step under read more:
step 0: look at other hair tutorials/pictures of real hair to figure out how light reflects off of them. then completely disregard that and just make things up (this is the best artistic process trust me i do it every day)
step 1: just get out that basic shape. it doesnt have to be anything fancy,
step 2: just fill it in and adjust the shape as needed
step 3: figure out how the hair moves and flows, which parts go out more (highlights), which parts are closer to the head (shadows/base), etc. i highly recommend just looking at pictures of hair online, or taking pictures of your own hair. for coily/curly hair, you just kind of have to do this for each curl/coil. one thing to keep in mind the highlight is in the middle of the curl/coil and the shadows are on the edges (usually). i'll elaborate more on that once i have an actual video for it
step 4: just make it so the edges of the highlights transition a bit more smoothly into the base color. it just helps for later steps tbh. try not to over do it, don't want to completely get rid of the highlight, just soften it
step 5: add more highlights with thinner brush. this should be where the light would bounce off the hair the MOST. i think i forgot to say in the video uhhh add in some base value too. maybe a few shadows. mostly this step is for highlights tho.
step 6: idk what else to put here sorry. ngl just get silly with it
step 7: it is very important to do one stroke per area in this one. do not lift your pen off the screen/tablet/whatever until the little area youre working on is one smooth transparent shade, then move on to the next. idk if i'm explaining this right hopefully this makes sense.
step 8: complete opposite as step seven. make as many strokes as you feel it needs. not TOO many, just enough to get some texture and then some yk? i recommend making a copy of the layer youre working on before doing this so that if you mess something up you can always go back to square one.
also a lot of these steps apply to pretty much any hair type just. in a completely different shape with completely different rules. which is to say its exactly like this but it actually isn't like this at all. which is why i plan on making other videos some day (hopefully) also look up "hair texture chart" it will help you find the words you need to look up good refs
remember: always get silly with it. the only rule to to make things up and change your mind 400 times. bring a 'fuck it, we ball' mentality to your art program that the haters (your brain) really won't like. practice makes perfect and all that, do NOT expect to get something good first try, sometimes i still struggle with drawing hair in a way that i like and just scrap the whole thing. also i'm not kidding about those real hair reference pictures it helps so so much
hope this helped at least a little bit bc i am not good at explaining things 👍

I'd play video games if I had the time and money but those are two things that never seem to exist in excess in my corner of the world. I used to write music and poetry and that is maybe a monthly activity at this point. I read and wrote about philosophy. Now I just make low-fidelity short-form videos because that's all I have time for.
11. Have you any pets? Not presently, but thinking about getting a pair of dogs!
12. What sports do you play/have you played? Used to be really into rhythmic gymnastics and aerial (hoop and silks.) I don't quite have the skills I used to have in that department, so now I'm more of a fan of outdoor rock climbing and swimming in lakes/the ocean. Recently, I've been REALLY into the IDEA of figure skating, but have never actually worn skates in my life.
13. How tall are you? 147 cm
14. Favorite subject in school? Latin. Naturally, as a Catholic.
15. Dream job? At this point, I just want to be a full-time stay-at-home mother who has a large garden with food that I take to the farmer's market and other than that I'm just a homemaker. I have a few (very different) ideas of what I would want to do in different perfect worlds, but lately I'm trying to stop focusing on chasing MY dreams, and start focusing on what God wants me to be doing right now. Whatever that may be.

6, 11 aaand 12, I think ;)
6- fav thing to draw is just prob shadow lmao, but next best is clouds! theyre super fun
11- i usually listen to youtube videos! usually listening to music is too lonely until i get in the zone, but music goes crazyyyy when i do
12- drawing process ! um man, a lot of it is just sit there and zone out while i try to visualize the sketches fghjhjdgf, for big pieces i Try to thumbnail but im not great at those, but i do like 15 sketch layers bc i am Very Normal, and i dont really do a lot of lineart these days, it gets my perfectionism too bad so i just refine sketches until i add color, rendering stuff gets done underneath the sketch but in the final pass ill have a color layer to smooth out sketch imperfections but like- normal simple sketch pages i do- its truly just, zone out, have an idea, sketch the idea and then zone out and daydream context around the sketch and then Not Elaborate lmaoo

does anyone else make really silly and elaborate time travel fantasies? go back and assassinate/un-assassinate major political figures? talk to ancient philosophers? give a victorian child monster? nah, no i don’t wanna do that.
i wanna go back to 1980-something, record on a cd of me playing a bunch of famous pop song melodies from then until now on a piano or something, seal it up and mark it with “DO NOT OPEN UNTIL 2000” and leave it in a bank safe somewhere, and just travel forward to see what would happen.
i wanna go back in time, explain thoroughly the workings of my phone and the internet to tesla or something just for funsies.
i want to go grab jesus gandhi siddhartha and confucius as young adults and tour new york or nasa with them, and show the wonders of the modern day. hell why not let’s bring leonardo da vinci and newton. maybe vaccinate em and give them gas masks and cool translators though. like hey guys cmere i wanna experience wonder and awe at how far the human race has come.
i wanna see what would happen if i just handed a textbook on electricity to someone in the 1700s. or showed an early programmer or video game developer the extent that technology went, where people create wonderful paintings and art and music and games all on their own.
i want to just like bring a bunch of famous musicians into a room and see what madness could be made. i wanna see what duke ellington and freddie mercury and beethoven could make together. i wanna then take that mixtape and publish it but then go back and pay the damn guys properly.
i don’t even watch doctor who but i wanna do that van gogh episode so bad but with so many other famous artists and musicians and writers that sadly ended up destitute and dead. poe i’m looking at you
ACTUALLY!! one of the biggest things i’ve always wanted was to bring a movie audience from the early 1900s to sit and experience a (good) modern day movie experience, fuckin like baby driver or infinity war or hell avatar or something why not, and just experience giddily see them experience full color 4k hd and cgi and surround sound and stuff
i mean a guess a lot of these fall under the trope of “go back in time and show famous person day!” but like. seriously. i think unironically if time travel does exist somehow i would want to do the “characters watch the show, even for after the episode they came from” type fanfiction except with real life
anyway. yeah. like seriously i just want to reenact how i felt as new tech came out but in an even deeper way ya know

Red Hearts headcanons;
Tumblr media
Her name isn't actually Red, that's just a nickname.
Her actual full name is Róisín Evangeline Hearts.
Her father is the king of Hearts.
Her favorite colors are pink and red.
She has brown eyes and black hair with red streaks.
She's been nicknamed 'Red' since she was a little kid because of her extreme love for the color.
Red has a nack for getting herself (and her friends) in and out of trouble.
She has been described as rebellious, troublesome, and whip-smart.
She loves elaborate dresses but also loves a nice, simple, comfy outfit from time to time.
Red loves provoking her mother against her older brother, Hardy's, wishes because she knows she'll never gain her approval.
She loves pulling pranks, playing cards, solving mysteries, and ghost hunting.
She has a card symbol choker necklace with matching earrings.
She usually travels with a playing card hoverboard.
Red's weapon of choice is a flamingo croquet mallet.
Her favorite holiday just so happens to be Chloe's least favorite and that's Halloween. She likes it because no one looks at her weird and Chloe hates it because of the dragons.
Red also enjoys acting, musicals, croquet, and poetry.
Red and Hardy both inherited their mother's temper. She's just better at hiding it than he is.
She is also a big fan of unbirthday cakes, princessy stuff, and roses.
She doesn't get along that well with her mother or her father who she thinks is spineless but she still loves them.
Trials bore her.
Red met Chloe when they were 10 after the barrier was brought down and they instantly became bestfriends.
She swore to Chloe that she'd help her find Chad after he disappeared and never gave up on it.
Eventually, they somehow managed to drag Danny Darling, Maddox Hatter, and Hadie into it and even convinced the Badun Detective Agency and the other protégés to give them a hand occasionally.
She is 18 by the time the events of the pocketwatch occur.
Flamingos are her favorite animal and eventually Chloe gets her one as a pet.
She names it 'Ruby' and Ruby gets along great with Chloe's pets (Her dog, Bailey. Her horse, Speedy. Her cat, Bumpsy. Her mice—Athos, Porthos, and Felthos. And her elephant, Peepsy).
Red made herself a toy back on the isle that she named 'Ace'. It was made with a card, goggly eyes and glue.
She still has the toy in her room on her desk.
She and Chloe are roommates at Auradon Prep.
Red and her brother help out at her mom's salon.
Red's mother use to be (and may still be) a teacher at Dragonhall.
Her favorite sport is foul ball.
Her favorite video games are Storm the Castle and Crown of Duty.
Gil fixes any rips in her outfits because her brother is in his crew.
Her favorite classes are Flying Ed (Flying Carpet driver's ed) and Jousting class.
Red is apart of the following: Jousting club, Debate club, croquet club, and the school newspaper.
She looked up to Dizzy alot since she is younger than her.
Every year on Unification Day Holiday and King Beast's Honorary Holiday, she vandalizes the museum and his statues.
She hates Beast, obviously.
Of the boys, she's closest to Maddox.
She doesn't take Hadie or his 'minions' seriously because she doesn't really believe their evil.
She gets along with him and his friends just fine though.
She also gets along great with Danny.
She gets along fine enough with Ally despite their differences.
Red's favorite bands are The Bad Apples and The Dragon Slayers but cannot stand The Sorcerer's Appertinces or Aladdin and the Lamps.
She loves Heavy metal and rock music.
Her favorite social media is InstaRoyal.
Her favorite candy is licorice.
Her least favorite class is Remdial goodness and Ethics.
Red has nearly been kicked out of the School Newspaper writing team and the debate team several times for making people uncomfortable. For bluntly stating the truth.
She also has a sister named 'Quinlynn'.
Also despite their vastly differing appearances, the three of them are (despite popular belief) full-blooded siblings. Genetics are just werid sometimes.
That's all I got for now. Hope you guys enjoyed.

Ep3
Wilhelm using meditation to try to calm his anxiety mood
Aaaaaaaand he ripped it up. Boy needs meds just gonna say.
God I love the title cards this season.
Wille and Felice's friendship is amazing
Hate to say it Wille cause I am rooting for ya here but honestly it's none of y US THAT SUN AFTER RAIN. EXCUSE ME. NO
Erik saw Boris as well? Hmmmmmmm
Oh man. Wilhelm. Ouch.
Hah. Having to do a group project with Simon. This feels like a fanfic and I love it.
OH AND ITS GAY
Wilhelm has absolutely no chill I love it.
No
THATS SUN AFTER RAIN WHAT FORS IT MEAN UTS ABOUT SIMON AND MARCUS AND WILLE AND UTS ITS JDNNFJDJSJSJDJDJDJDJDJDJJDHDJDJDJDJDJDJDJHDHDHDHDHDHDHDJEJWJSKSKKSJDJDJDJDJD I'm going to have a fucking anyeirism why did I ever figure out sun After Rain is a foreshadowing song why what does it mean WHAT DOES IT MEAN
Oh Sara is about to throw hands with this dick
I really hope this choir lady lets Simon do this with the Hillerska song
Oh my god he wrote a love song
Oh my god
It's not about the school ma'am it's not about the school
God the use of music in this show it's all so important and meaningful and IS WHY I STILL WANT TO KNOW WHAT THE FUCK IS UP WITH SUN AFTER RAIN WHAT DID IT MEANNNN WHAT IS IT FORESHADOWING
Vincent has gone mad with power ugh. August probably really was the better prefect.
SARA HE LIKES YOU. HE ACTUALLY LIKES YOU. THATS WHY HE WANTS YOU TO COME OVER.
Oh my god Marcus hasn't even seen the video.
WHY IS SUN AFTER RAIN BACK.
they're playing it so subtly too like if I was not hardwired to know this song after listening so intently to figure out the foreshadowing thing I would not notice it but like. why is it here.
August genuinely likes her this is so cute.
It's all about the hands it's all about the touches
Okay but the yellow bra?? Yellow is such a good color on her.
"I like to smell like him" hmmmmmmmmmmnnnnnnn double meanings
I did not know that digital(?) virtual(?) rowing competitions existed and this is so interesting
Aw they lost
OH. OH. OH MY GOD. OKAY. MARCUS KISSED HIM AND WILLE SAW. OKAY.
He's looking at their photos oh my god
Okay random analysis that does not have to do with whats happening in my screen right now but Sun After Rain is a foreshadowing song, but specifically it's about their relationship. It foreshadows because it's about their relationship. I will have to elaborate on this later but it's. It's about their relationship so it foreshadows but that's also why it's called Sun After Rain. There will be Sun After Rain.
Oh. Okay August would be next after Wille confirmation. Glad we've finally cleared that fandom debate up.
This is so going to stir up controversy but honestly if August
OH. NO.
This is not happening.
I mean this is happening. But this is not happening. THIS IS HAPPENING.
Wow b
Okay.
So we're definitely going to have Felice and Wilhelm fics now.
This is just the season of everyone fucking everyone apparently.
Anyways as I was saying honestly if he worked through his issues and became a better person, August would be a good king, definitely WAY better than Wilhelm who CLEARLY does not want the role
Anyways wow oh my god okay halfway through. Damn.

Since some people seemed interested, here are some music vids I'd love to make if I ever get the chance to start animating again (under a read more cause there's a lot of them):
Lithium//Evenescence- edgy Snowfrost PMV about her crimes. The vid would follow her actions from the beginning of Snowfrost's Fate all the way to her death at the end of Moon Rise. I would probably give cats edgy 2008-esque designs to go with it, because I'm crazy about that kinda thing. (This is the one I want to do the most tbh. I've already got a script made. If I could pass it on to someone so they could make this PMV real I would. I'd literally make all the designs for it too, probably even storyboard it)
We Are One//song from The Lion King 2- AMV featuring Wolfheart singing to Moonpaw. It'd probably be very colorful and have a lot of movement and would be a killer to animate. Their relationship is important and I like things that can show it
One Lonely Visitor//Chevelle- PMV about Jaybird and her relationship with her sister Snowfrost, taking place from Snowfrost's Fate up to Jaybird's death near the end of Moon Rise (another one I really really want made. This one also has a script created for it)
Pardon Me// He is We- This one would be a AMV/PMV mix; it would be about Snowfrost and Wolfheart's feelings for each other, which slowly fade over time. The vid would start out lighthearted, maybe colored in pastels, then become metaphorically and literally darker as the song progresses. Eventually it would depict Snowfrost having delusional thoughts about Wolfheart, about getting him back, or possibly making him another of her victims
Look What You Made Me Do// Taylor Swift- ok listen. I am not a fan of Taylor Swift, especially not this song. But after listening to it multiple times a day on the radio at work years back, back when SOTM was being plotted, I started imaging Situations to cope with it. And this song ended up perfectly fitting Nightshade's story in my head. So this would be a PMV about that. (Can't elaborate what that story is cause its major spoilers, you'll just have to wait and see.) This would be a vid I'd make by the time half of, if not all of, Moon Fall becomes published
Ghost// Saint Asonia- probaby a PMV/AMV mix including all the point of view characters in Signs of the Moon, and how they handle being a prophecy kid/having an omen hanging over their heads. It would probably be heavily focused on how these cats look to or turn away from Starclan for it as well. There would be a lot of action/movement/colors during moments when the music swells and especially during the bridge of the song (did I ever mention this is one of my favorite songs ever?)
Poor Unfortunate Souls//song from The Little Mermaid (animated version)- AMV/PMV of Hazepaw being visited by the ghost he's led to believe is Sea Breeze who's trying to help him
Pet//A Perfect Circle- AMV about the future POV Possumpaw and how he deals with his manipulative mother and asshole brother. The whole thing might be in black and white with the only color coming from cats' eyes and blood/tears. I have to think about Possumpaw's story more before I come up with specific details about what goes on in the video. I have a couple of ideas tho
Blue Lips//Regina Spektor- Swiftcloud AMV/PMV mix highlighting all of Moon Rise cause I think it'd be neat. The whole thing would be in grayscale with some details colored in blue
Brutus//The Buttress- Another PMV starring Nightshade. This one specifically is about her relationship with her mentor, Wolfheart. How much she looked up to him at first, then slowly came to hate him and seek his downfall
Lemon Boy//Cave Town- PMV about Urchinpaw and Hazepaw's budding friendship. The story would probably be told through Urchin's POV
Criminal//Britney Spears- PMV featuring Cloudypaw (a major character in Moon Fall) and her fatal attraction towards Nightshade's son, Weaslepaw
Behind Blue Eyes// Limp Bizkit- another PMV about Snowfrost and her story, told from more "sympathetic" pov because we support womens wrongs <3 this vid would show a lot more of the isolation and loneliness Snowfrost feels especially as she goes down her murderous path
How to Save a Life//The Fray- AMV with Tigerpaw/lily and Moonpaw/face regarding Moonpaw's cross clan friendship with Hazepaw/storm. The vid would be in Tiger's POV, showing her concern for her friend. Throughout you can see Tigerpaw's dislike and mistrust of Hazepaw while Moonpaw remains blind to his flaws. The disagreement puts a strain on the friendship which will also be shown thru the vid
Hellfire//song from The Hunchback of Notredom- AMV featuring Darkpelt who sings about his emotions pertaining to Nightshade (can't elaborate much because spoilers, but the tl;dr is he has a massive crush on her and does Night's bidding because of it, but he hates it as it goes against Starclan)
Vitamin R (Leading Us Along)// Chevelle- an AMV/PMV mix focused on Whisperpaw and her relationship with her family + dealing with her secret "ability"
Genius Next Door//Regina Spektor- another PMV about Swiftcloud. This time its her during Moon Fall, watching her kits grow and make choices, while her clan falls into chaos once more due to plot events I can't reveal atm
Warbringer: Jaina (Daughter of the Sea)//song from World of Warcraft- I have 2 different PMV ideas for this one. One is of Snowfrost's time at the beginning of her Super Edition, where she's dealing with her punishment of a Warriorpaw Ceremony and her growing feelings of anger during it. The other idea is a depiction of Sea Breeze's story
Werewolf// Motionless In White- Werewolf! Hazepaw AU. Idk how else to explain this one. I'd have to show the script for others to understand what it's about (its a WIP). This would be a Halloween video
Sally's Song// cover by Amy Lee- a PMV of Moonpaw singing about Hazepaw, with frames showing their relationship

Sanders Sides & Youtube head canons
This is just what I think the sides would watch on YouTube.. :)
Warnings: swearing, mention of depression and anxiety
just found this in my drafts, I have no idea how long it’s been there
Also- the names aren’t color coded because it wouldn’t let me do that for some reason
Enjoy!
Logan:
- MatPat STAN
- Film Theory, Food Theory, Game Theory, all of it
- After he watches a movie for the first time, he sees if any of his faves have made a video on it yet
- After a debate (or when he feels like debating) he looks up the topic on YouTube to see if he can find any video essays
- He knows what ASMR is, so you know what I’m about to say
- HE IS OBSESSED WITH ASMR, okay???
- Especially personal attention centered ones bc he doesn’t get personal attention irl
- Started watching Buzzfeed Unsolved with Virgil after AA
- When he’s had a bay day or week he searches for those videos that are titled “This video will make you cry”
- Not going to elaborate on that one so here ya go, my fellow Logan stans
Virgil:
- Watches emo band music videos (obviously)
- ADORES those SFX makeup artists
- He may or may not want to be a makeup artist in his free time
- When he’s anxious, he watches ASMR
- No one is aware that he does this
- He knows that Patton and Logan watch it, but he’s given them so much shit about it, he cannot ever tell them he likes it too
- One day when he was having a panic attack, he thought “oh what the hell, it’s worth a shot”
- Has been hooked ever since
- He loves conspiracy theory videos, as we learned
- Religiously watched Buzzfeed Unsolved
- You know those people who make sculptures that look exactly like Tim Burton characters?
- Yeah, his watch history is FILLED with video after video of people crafting Jack Skellington or Emily, the Corpse Bride
- He may or may not have tried to make one himself
Patton:
- Obviously watches the videos where the pet’s army parents come home
- LOVES baking videos, specifically Preppy Kitchen, because he adores how neat everything looks
- When he’s had a rough day, he makes a quick run to the store so he can whip up one of the recipes from the video
- Really likes art related ASMR
- It soothes him
- He sometimes watches gaming videos
- Games like Minecraft
- Or anything on DanandPhilGames
- When he’s depressed, he watches music videos from Thomas’s favorite bands when he was a teenager
- For that sweet sweet nostalgia
- Clips from The SpongeBob musical cheer him up as well
Roman:
- Watches broadway performances
- His recommended is filled with small artists who sing covers
- Seeing people following their dreams makes him so happy
- But when he’s feeling regret about the wedding, he actively avoids them
- Sometimes falls down an art rabbit hole because it's SO PRETTY
- He doesn’t understand why Virgil likes the SFX makeup videos, when the beauty guru’s videos are drama filled and “have pretty makeup”
- As we know, he likes epic fail videos
- When he’s having a bad day, he will watch those for HOURS
- Really likes the commentary videos about 90 Day Fiance
- Does not watch the show outside of those, but absolutely LOVES to watch those
- Or maybe he does watch it, you decide ;)
Janus:
- You KNOW he is subscribed to every single drama channel out there
- When he gets a notification from one of them, he stops whatever he is doing and goes to watch it
- All for the tea
- Okay this may sound a bit off for him, but he cannot stop watching YouTubers who dress like they’re from a different time
- Rachel Maksy, Karolina Zebrowska, etc
- He loves him some chaotic queens
- And he gets to learn new things
- Not only about history and fashion, but about sewing
- This man made his capelet and that is not up for debate, I’m sorry
Remus:
- Watches pimple popping videos
- And cystic surgeries, apparently
- Virgil got him into SFX makeup, so he enjoys watching those videos when he needs something a bit tamer
- JermBot is his FAVORITE BITCH
- His chaotic energy is *chef’s kiss* in his opinion
- Watches old clips of Evil Knievel to see if he can attempt the tricks
- Starts fights with people in comment sections for funzies
- Also watches Buzzfeed Unsolved
- Because why the fuck not
- Okay this next one is kinda angsty but here we go
- He and Roman used to watch Simply Nailogical together so they could do art on each other’s nails
- The art that Roman did was a mirror image of Cristine’s, and Remus’s was, well.. You know-
- Remus-y
- HOWEVER - that does not mean that his nail art wasn’t good, because you know damn well that it was
- So when he’s having a really bad day, he watches her channel
